Merkel backs Israel’s demand that Iranian troops be removed from Syria-Meeting with Netanyahu in Berlin, chancellor says Iran's regional influence is 'worrying'; PM warns of 'new religious war' in Mideast-By Raphael Ahren-JUN 5,18

German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Monday told Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that she agreed with Israel’s demand that Iranian troops be removed from Syria, especially the area close to the Israeli border.“Iran’s regional influence is worrying,” she said.Announcing at a joint press conference in Berlin that she and other government representatives planned to visit Israel in early October, Merkel said that “one has to discuss” Tehran’s presence in Syria. She also condemned the Islamic Republic’s heavily anti-Israel tweets. On Sunday, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei called the Jewish state the “cancerous tumor” of the region that must be “removed and eradicated.”Still, Merkel defended the nuclear deal signed in 2015 by Iran and world powers — and opposed all along by Israel — arguing that it made the world a better place.US President Donald Trump withdrew from the deal on May 8, with Netanyahu’s enthusiastic encouragement and support. Both the US and Israel hope that Trump’s withdrawal can lead all sides into addressing what they say are the deal’s shortcomings — including “sunset” provisions that eventually end restrictions on Iranian nuclear activities, such as enriching uranium, as well as permitting Iran to continue to develop long-range missiles.Merkel, like other European leaders with whom Netanyahu is set to meet later this week, has urged Trump to remain in the deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. As he took off for Berlin on Monday, the first leg of a series of visits with European leaders, Netanyahu indicated that Iran would be the first and only subject on his agenda.Intent on winning support for amending the nuclear deal with Iran and getting Iranian troops out of Syria, the prime minister will also meet with French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Theresa May, both of whose countries are signatories to the deal.At Monday’s press conference, the two leaders agreed that it was important for the International Atomic Energy Agency to review a secret Iranian nuclear archive that Israel smuggled out of Tehran earlier this year and which Netanyahu announced to the world with great fanfare at the end of April.Netanyahu warned Merkel that Iran’s presence in Syria should also worry Germany, given that Shiite militias there were intent on converting Sunni Muslims to their creed, with the result that a “new religious war” would break out in the Middle East and send further waves of refugees to Europe.Israel fears that as the Syrian civil war winds down, Iran, whose forces and Shiite proxies have backed President Bashar Assad, will turn its focus to Israel. The Israeli Air Force is believed to have carried out a number of airstrikes on Iranian positions in Syria. Last month, the bitter enemies openly clashed when Iran fired dozens of rockets at Israeli positions in the Golan Heights, and Israel responded by striking several Iranian targets in Syria.Last week, it was reported that Israel and Russia had reached a deal to remove Iranian forces from southern Syria, while also giving Israel a green light to strike Iranian targets in Syria. The reported agreement would see Iranian forces leave southwestern Syria, while allowing Israel to strike Iranian assets deep in the country. Israel agreed not to attack Syrian regime targets, a report in the Arabic Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper said.Turning to the issue of long-dormant peace talks with the Palestinians, Netanyahu said, “Our hand is always extended in peace,” while arguing that Israel’s improving relationships with Arab states were “most promising route.”Merkel said, “There isn’t agreement on all points. But we’re partners, we’re friends.”While the German leader reiterated the need for a two-state solution, Netanyahu said there would be no progress until the Palestinians recognized the right of the Jewish state to exist.

Rivlin calls on Abbas to condemn Gaza kite attacks-President also wishes PA leader happy Ramadan and successful recovery after hospitalization-By TOI staff-JUN 5,18

President Reuven Rivlin called Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas on Monday and asking him to condemn the airborne arson attacks on the Gaza border and attempts to cross into Israel.“The terror coming from Gaza is a problem for both sides and we should hear your voice on this matter,” Rivlin said, according to Hebrew media reports. “We have to see how to stop the arson and infiltration of the border fence.”The president also wished Abbas a happy Ramadan and successful recovery following his hospitalization last month. The PA’s official Wafa news agency only reported on the latter part of the conversation.Abbas was admitted on May 20 to the Istishari Arab Hospital near Ramallah in the West Bank with complications following an ear operation, including high fever.Officials later confirmed he was being treated for pneumonia.Fires caused by kites and helium balloons rigged with incendiary devices or attached to burning rags and launched over the border have become almost daily occurrences for residents of southern Israel since the start of the “March of Return” protests along the border at the end of March.Israeli officials have said that since the start of the protests at the Gaza border, there have been more than 200 fires in the Gaza periphery, destroying some 17,500 dunams (4,300 acres) of land, the majority of it in nature reserves and parks.According to the Nature and Parks Authority, approximately 10,000 dunams in parks and reserves in southern Israel were burned. Though a spokesperson for the authority said investigations were still underway to determine exactly how much of that was caused by incendiary kites and balloons, and how much was from other sources. On Sunday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered that funds be withheld from the Palestinian Authority to compensate Israeli farmers living on the Gaza border who had their agricultural lands destroyed.A statement from Netanyahu’s office didn’t disclose how much would be deducted. Amir Dan, a Tax Authority official, told Army Radio that agricultural damage alone stood at NIS 5 million ($1.4 million) and that damage caused to nature reserves and other land could drive up the figure.

Liberman vows retaliation for Gaza arson attacks that sparked hundreds of fires-After incendiary kites and balloons torch thousands of acres of land, defense minister says response will come 'when convenient' for Israel-By Tamar Pileggi and Raoul Wootliff-TOI-JUN 5,18

Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman on Monday warned terrorist groups in Gaza that Israel would retaliate for a wave of arson attacks that have burned some 9,000 dunams (2,224 acres) of forests and agricultural fields in Israeli communities adjacent to the Palestinian territory.Fires caused by kites and helium balloons rigged with incendiary devices or attached to burning rags and launched over the border have become almost daily occurrences for residents of southern Israel since the start of the “March of Return” protests along the border at the end of March.“It needs to be made clear that we are not prepared to accept the kite phenomenon, rioting along the border fence, or any attempts to breach it in an effort to cause damage to work being done on sovereign Israeli territory, and therefore we will act accordingly,” Liberman said at a faction meeting of his Yisrael Beytenu party.Liberman emphasized that the army “would act in accordance with Israel’s interests when it’s convenient for us.“In any case I don’t let scores go unsettled and we’ll settle the score with Hamas, Islamic Jihad and the other terrorists operating against us from the territory of the Gaza Strip,” he added.Liberman said that since the start of protests, some 600 incendiary kites have been flown over the border into Israel. He said 400 of them were intercepted by the IDF, and 200 landed in Israeli territory, sparking 198 fires that burned a total of 9,000 dunams of farmland and forests in southern Israel.Liberman did not reveal his source for the numbers he relayed to Yisrael Beytenu lawmakers, which was lower than other recent tallies.Israeli officials have said that since the start of the protests, there have been more than 200 fires in the Gaza periphery, destroying some 17,500 dunams (4,300 acres) of land, the majority of it in nature reserves and parks.According to the Nature and Parks Authority, approximately 10,000 dunams in parks and reserves in southern Israel were burned. Though a spokesperson for the authority said investigations were still underway to determine exactly how much of that was caused by incendiary kites and balloons, and how much was from other sources.Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon said Monday that his office will “immediately” give Gaza-area farmers 50 percent of the estimated costs in damages to their fields.“Already last month, when the phenomenon of flaming kites began I went to the Gaza area and declared that the State of Israel recognizes the phenomenon as terror for all intents and purposes and the residents will be compensated up to the last shekel,” he told journalists at the Knesset, adding that 25 claims have so far been filed over damages caused to 5,000 dunams of wheat fields, orchards and irrigation systems.“Our farmers are strong people who have gone through difficult periods and won’t be broken by the kite terror,” Kahlon added.Arson has become a widely adopted tactic during the “March of Return” protests, which Israel accuses the Hamas terror group of orchestrating as a cover for attacks and attempts to breach the border fence. In addition to the growing problem of flaming kites, terrorist groups in the coastal enclave last week launched over 100 mortar shells and rockets at southern Israel and the IDF retaliated by bombing over 65 Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad targets in the Strip.Speaking at their own faction meetings at the Knesset, Zionist Union chair Avi Gabbay and Yesh Atid head Yair Lapid slammed the government for what they described as a lackluster response to the violence, both saying that Prime Misniter Benjamin Netanyahu had failed to provide security to residents of the south of Israel-“We are part of a ongoing cycle of violence,” Gabbay told his MKs, “and the right wing government of [Jewish Home leader Naftali] Bennett, Netanyahu and Liberman is not bringing security to the people of Israel.”The Zionist Union leader said it was not enough for Israel to just respond to the mortar and rocket fire and must instead, “initiate, initiate, initiate.”“What we are doing now is not the Zionist way,” he charged, urging the government to “listen to the defense establishment, which is saying the same thing as us.”Citing comments last week in which the prime minister said that the IDF had dealt Hamas “the harshest blow they have received in years,” Lapid mocked Netanyahu “for declaring victory in the previous round of fighting” while residents of Gaza border communities remain in fear.”Netanyahu has no policy when it comes to Gaza except to wait for the next round and the next arson attack. The residents who live around Gaza deserve better,” Lapid said.

Beyond kites: ‘Fire balloons’ increasingly used to set southern Israel ablaze-Total of at least 17,500 dunams – nearly 7 square miles – of land burned as Palestinians repeatedly send airborne incendiary devices across border-By Judah Ari Gross-toi-jun 5,18

Since the first few weeks of Gaza’s “March of Return,” young Palestinians have been flying so-called “incendiary kites” into Israeli territory, setting fire to vast swaths of grasslands, agricultural fields and nature reserves.More recently, however, a new arson tactic has been gaining popularity along the Gaza border. Instead of kites, a different children’s toy is being flown into Israel: helium balloons. The concept is the same: Launch the airborne incendiary devices into the air and rely on the breeze from the coast to push them into Israeli territory, where they can start a fire. The balloon tactic has been in use for at least a month and a half, but it has picked up in recent weeks. In total, approximately 17,500 dunams (4,300 acres, or nearly seven square miles) of land have been burned in more than 250 fires over the past two months, more than half of it in nature reserves, according to initial assessments.Authorities have yet to determine how many of the fires were started by kites and how many by balloons. “Kite terror” has become a catch-all term for the phenomenon. As of Monday, there have been no injuries caused by the fires, but the cost of the damage is high and expected to increase, as there’s no sign that Palestinians in Gaza are giving up on the arson tactic. The blazes, specifically those in nature reserves, have also wreaked havoc on local wildlife, ecologists say. And there are more fires every day.The balloons themselves do not cause the fires — helium is an inert gas — but they carry flaming material attached to a long string. In some cases, just a few party balloons are used. In others, it is a larger cluster of latex balloons, capable of carrying far more substantial incendiary devices. As with the kites, the Israeli military has yet to come up with a response to this threat. A pilot program using drones to take down the incoming kites and balloons was deemed a failure, Israel’s Kan TV reported Saturday night. For now, Israel’s primary means of combating these airborne firebombs remains preparedness and a rapid response when blazes do break out.Authorities, as well as individual farmers, monitor the area and when an incoming kite or balloon is spotted, they rush to the scene in order to put out the fire before it spreads.Farmers use tractors to dig up the area around the fire in order to starve out the flames until firefighters can arrive to put out the blaze entirely. They are not always successful. Some 10,000 dunams (2,470 acres) of parks and nature reserves have been burned in recent weeks, according to a spokesperson for the Nature and Parks Authority, who stressed that the authority did not yet have definitive evidence that all of the fires were caused by kites or balloons.Just on Saturday, some 300 dunams (74 acres) of the Carmia nature reserve — approximately a third of the park’s total land area — went up in flames in one of the largest individual blazes since the start of the “fire kite” phenomenon. Israel’s Hadashot news reported that there were suspicions the Carmia fire may have been started by a “fire balloon” that spread the flames as it blew through the area, but this could not be immediately confirmed. Authorities said they were still investigating the cause of the fire.Over 5,000 dunams (1,235 acres) of farmland has been burned, most of it wheat fields, according to the Tax Authority, which is processing compensation requests from area farmers.Driving through the area, it is rare to see a field or patch of trees that does not have at least one blotch of scorched earth from one of the fires sparked by a kite or balloon. In addition, approximately 2,500 dunams (620 acres) of Jewish National Fund forests was burned, a spokesperson for the organization said, adding that the JNF would complete its final assessment of the damage on Tuesday. The Tax Authority said there have been no requests for compensation made by the JNF or the Nature and Parks Authority yet.The Tax Authority estimates that the damage to farmland alone will cost at least NIS 5 million ($1.4 million), to be paid from the government’s fund for damage caused by terrorist activity. On Sunday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that in order to cover the cost the government would withhold funds from the Palestinian Authority. The decision raised eyebrows among Israeli analysts, who pointed out that the PA does not control the Gaza Strip. Indeed, the Authority’s primary rival, the Hamas terror group, has ruled the enclave since ousting the PA in 2007.Penalizing the PA for Hamas actions would almost certainly not encourage Hamas to stop the kite arson and would probably have the opposite effect.-WWII-era weapon-The tactic of using “fire balloons” might be a new one in Gaza, but its history goes back decades. In World War II, Japan used such “fire balloons” against the United States, sending 9,000 huge hydrogen-filled balloons into the Pacific jet stream where the air currents could push them toward American territory.Approximately 300 of these balloons reached North America, causing relatively little damage. However, one of them was responsible for the only casualties of World War II in the mainland United States. On May 5, 1945, an incendiary bomb that had been carried into America by a Japanese balloon exploded in the rural town of Bly, Oregon, killing six people.

US court throws out bid to ban ‘In God We Trust’ from bills-Chicago appeals panel rules that phrase on currency does not amount to religious endorsement, does not violate Constitution-By AP-jun 5,18-toi

CHICAGO — A federal court has ruled that printing “In God We Trust” on US currency does not amount to a religious endorsement and therefore does not violate the US Constitution. The Chicago Daily Law Bulletin reports that the 7th US Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago made the ruling Thursday in a lawsuit brought by a self-declared Satanist, Kenneth Mayle. He argued that the motto propagates a religious view he opposes.A lower court tossed the suit citing a Supreme Court decision that a motto on currency is not something people display prominently and thus that people are not forced to publicly advertise views that clash with their own.Mayle appealed to restore the suit, but the 7th Circuit refused, describing the phrase as a “historical reminder” of the nation’s heritage.

Trump says he has ‘absolute right’ to pardon himself-A day after legal counsel Giuliani says he would be unwise to use pardon, US president tweets, 'Why would I when I have done nothing wrong?'-By Jonathan Lemire and Catherine Lucey    -TOI-JUN 5,18

WASHINGTON (AP) — US President Donald Trump declared Monday that he has the “absolute right” to pardon himself, but added he had done nothing wrong, asserting his presidential power as the White House is sharpening its political and legal defenses against the special counsel Russia probe.Trump’s comments on Twitter came a day after attorney Rudy Giuliani played down the possibility that the president could pardon himself, suggesting he might have that authority but would be unwise to use it.“Pardoning himself would be unthinkable and probably lead to immediate impeachment,” Giuliani, a member of Trump’s legal team, told NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday. “And he has no need to do it, he’s done nothing wrong.”In Monday’s tweet, Trump said: “As has been stated by numerous legal scholars, I have the absolute right to PARDON myself, but why would I do that when I have done nothing wrong?” He then again decried special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe as a “never ending Witch Hunt.”Trump’s legal team is making clear that it will combat any effort to force the president to testify in front of a grand jury. Giuliani on Sunday underscored one of the main arguments in a newly unveiled letter sent by Trump’s lawyers to Mueller back in January: A president can’t be given a grand jury subpoena as part of the investigation into foreign meddling in the 2016 election. But Giuliani, in a series of television interviews, broke with one of their bolder arguments in the letter that a president could not have committed obstruction of justice because he has ultimate authority over any federal investigation.Yet the former New York City mayor, who was not on the legal team when the letter was written, added that Trump “probably does” have the power to pardon himself, an assertion challenged by legal scholars. He says the president’s legal team hasn’t discussed that option, which many observers believe could plunge the nation into a constitutional crisis.“I think the political ramifications would be tough,” Giuliani told ABC’s “This Week.” “Pardoning other people is one thing, pardoning yourself is tough.”Trump has issued two unrelated pardons in recent days and discussed others, a move that has been interpreted as a possible signal to allies ensnared in the Russia probe. The letter is dated January 29 and addressed to Mueller from John Dowd, a Trump lawyer who has since resigned from the legal team. Mueller has requested an interview with the president to determine whether he had criminal intent to obstruct the investigation into his associates’ possible links to Russia’s election interference.Giuliani said Sunday that a decision about an interview would not be made until after Trump’s summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on June 12 in Singapore, and he cast doubt that it would occur at all.“I mean, we’re leaning toward not,” Giuliani told ABC. “But look, if they can convince us that it will be brief, it would be to the point, there were five or six points they have to clarify, and with that, we can get this — this long nightmare for the — for the American public over.”In addition to the legal battles, Trump’s team and allies have waged a public relations campaign against Mueller and the Justice Department to discredit the investigation and soften the impact of the special counsel’s potential findings. Giuliani said last week that the special counsel probe may be an “entirely illegitimate investigation” and need to be curtailed because, in his estimation, it was based on inappropriately obtained information from an informant and James Comey’s memos. In reality, the FBI began a counterintelligence investigation in July 2016 to determine if Trump campaign associates were coordinating with Russia to tip the election. The investigation was opened after the hacking of Democratic emails that intelligence officials later formally attributed to Russia.Trump’s team has requested a briefing about the informant, but Giuliani said Sunday that the president would not order the Justice Department to comply because it would negatively affect public opinion. But he continued to cast doubt on the special counsel’s eventual findings, suggesting that Trump has already offered explanations for the matters being investigated and that the special counsel was biased against the president.“For every one of these things he did, we can write out five reasons why he did it,” Giuliani said. “If four of them are completely innocent and one of them is your assumption that it’s a guilty motive, which (Trump) would deny, you can’t possibly prosecute him.”Trump’s legal team has long pushed the special counsel to narrow the scope of its interview. Giuliani also suggested that Trump’s lawyers had been incorrect when they denied that the president was involved with the letter that offered an explanation for Donald Trump Jr.’s 2016 Trump Tower meeting with Russians who offered damaging information on Democrat Hillary Clinton.“This is the reason you don’t let the president testify,” Giuliani told ABC. “Our recollection keeps changing, or we’re not even asked a question and somebody makes an assumption.”If Trump does not consent to an interview, Mueller will have to decide whether to go forward with a historic grand jury subpoena. His team raised the possibility in March of subpoenaing the president, but it is not clear if it is still under active consideration.A court battle is likely if Trump’s team argues that the president can’t be forced to answer questions or be charged with obstruction of justice. US President Bill Clinton was charged with obstruction in 1998 by the House of Representatives as part of his impeachment trial. And one of the articles of impeachment prepared against President Richard Nixon in 1974 was for obstruction.

Khamenei: Israel a ‘cancerous tumor’ that ‘must be eradicated’-Iran's supreme leader says destruction of Jewish state is 'possible and will happen,' slams 'traitorous countries' for not defending Palestinians-By Tamar Pileggi-TOI-JUN 5,18

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Sunday lashed out at Israel, calling the Jewish state the “cancerous tumor” of the region that must be “removed and eradicated.”In a series of tweets Sunday, Khamenei leveled harsh criticism at Israel for its handling of the violent Hamas-orchestrated “March of Return” protests along the Gaza border.“Our stance against Israel is the same stance we have always taken,” he said. “#Israel is a malignant cancerous tumor in the West Asian region that has to be removed and eradicated: it is possible and it will happen.”For Iranians, Khamenei said the issue of Palestine was not motivated by politics, but was “an issue of the heart… and faith.”For #Iran, the Palestinian cause is not a tactical issue, nor is it a 'political' strategy. It's an issue of beliefs, an issue of the heart and an issue of faith. 2/27/10#Palestine— Khamenei.ir (@khamenei_ir) June 3, 2018-A day earlier, the supreme leader took to Twitter to warn “traitorous countries” that refused to confront Israel militarily in order to appease the US, saying that “resistance is the only way to save #Palestine from oppression.”Khamenei has previously branded Israel as “barbaric,” “infanticidal,” and the “sinister, unclean rabid dog of the region.” More recently, he blamed “Zionists” for the anti-government demonstrations held across Iran earlier this year. His tweets over the weekend came amid a tense few days along the Gaza border that saw multiple exchanges of mortar and rocket fire and violence along the security fence. On Friday, a 21-year-old volunteer Gazan paramedic was shot dead as she tried to help evacuate wounded protesters near Israel’s perimeter fence. UN officials condemned Razan Najjar’s killing, and thousands of Palestinians attended her funeral on Saturday. The IDF said it was investigating the incident.Later Saturday night and early Sunday morning, Palestinian terrorist groups in Gaza resumed firing rockets over the border, shattering an official ceasefire agreement. In response, the IDF said Israeli jets carried out two rounds of airstrikes in the Gaza Strip.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu departed Israel Monday morning for Europe to rally support from key allies for amending the international nuclear deal with Iran and for pushing Tehran-backed forces out of neighboring Syria. The Israeli leader is set to meet with leaders from Germany, France and Britain, beginning with German Chancellor Angela Merkel later on Monday.Netanyahu has long identified Iran as Israel’s greatest threat, pointing to its nuclear program, calls for Israel’s destruction and support of anti-Israel terrorist groups. Before departing, the prime minister told his cabinet that archenemy Iran would top his agenda and voiced optimism for a successful visit. Israel has been a leading critic of the international nuclear deal with Iran, and more recently, has said it will not allow Iran to establish a permanent military presence in war-torn Syria.Agencies contributed to this report.

Guatemala volcano death toll up to 33, expected to rise-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-June 5, 2018

EL RODEO, Guatemala — Rescuers used heavy machinery and shovels found the bodies of more victims of an eruption at Guatemala's Volcano of Fire on Monday, and rescuers pulled 10 people still alive from ash drifts and mud flows. The head of the country's disaster agency, Sergio Cabanas, said at least 33 people were dead, and the death toll was expected to rise.He said rescuers using helicopters had rescued 10 people from areas hit by thick ash, mud or lava.Residents of El Rodeo, about 8 miles (12 kilometres ) downslope from the crater, said they were caught unaware by fast-moving pyroclastic flows when the volcano west of Guatemala City exploded Sunday, sending towering clouds of ash miles into the air.Searing flows of ash mixed with water and debris down its flanks, blocking roads and burning homes. The charred landscape left behind was still too hot to touch or even to pull bodies from in many parts, melting the shoes of rescuers. Workers told of finding bodies so thickly coated with ash they appeared to be statues. Inhaling ash or hot volcanic gases can asphyxiate people quickly.Hilda Lopez said the volcanic mud swept into her village of San Miguel Los Lotes, just below the mountain's flanks. She still doesn't know where her mother or her sister are."We were at a party, celebrating the birth of a baby, when one of the neighbours shouted at us to come out and see the lava that was coming," Lopez recalled. "We didn't believe it, and when we went out the hot mud was already coming down the street.""My mother was stuck there, she couldn't get out," said Lopez, weeping and holding her face in her hands.Disaster agency spokesman David de Leon said 18 bodies had been found in San Miguel Los Lotes. Lopez's husband, Joel Gonzalez, said his father was had been unable to escape and was believed to be "buried back there, at the house."In the village of El Rodeo, heavily armed soldiers wearing blue masks to ward off the dust stood guard behind yellow tape cordoning off the scene as orange-helmeted workers operated a backhoe. A group of residents arrived at the scene with shovels and work boots. Some locals said they never learned of the danger until it was upon them — and were critical of authorities."Conred (the disaster agency) never told us to leave. When the lava was already here they passed by in their pickup trucks telling at us to leave, but the cars did not stop to pick up the people," said Rafael Letran, a resident of El Rodeo. "The government is good at stealing, but when it comes to helping people they lack spark."Eddy Sanchez, director of the country's seismology and volcanology institute, said the flows reached temperatures of about 1,300 degrees Fahrenheit (700 Celsius). At least 20 people were injured, and authorities have said they feared the death toll could rise with an undetermined number of people unaccounted for. The disaster agency said 3,265 people had been evacuated.Dramatic video showed a fast-moving lahar, or flow of pyroclastic material and slurry, slamming into and partly destroying a bridge on a highway between Sacatepequez and Escuintla.Among the fatalities were four people, including a disaster agency official, killed when lava set a house on fire in El Rodeo, National Disaster Coordinator Sergio Cabanas said. Two children were burned to death as they watched the volcano's second eruption this year from a bridge, he added.Ash from the volcano, which lies about 27 miles (44 kilometres ) west of Guatemala City, fell on the capital area as well as the departments of Sacatepequez, Chimaltenango and Escuintla. Streets and houses were covered in the colonial town of Antigua, a popular tourist destination.Aviation authorities closed Guatemala City's international airport because of the danger posed to planes, but the airport was reopened at mid-morning Monday after workers cleared away ash.One of Central America's most active volcanos, the conical Volcan de Fuego reaches an altitude of 12,346 feet (3,763 metres ) above sea level at its peak.Sonia Perez D., The Associated Press.

Three people trapped by lava airlifted to safety near Hawaii volcano-[Reuters]-By Terray Sylvester-YAHOONEWS-June 4, 2018

PAHOA, Hawaii (Reuters) - Three people were airlifted to safety on Sunday morning as lava from Hawaii's Kilauea volcano threatened an isolated area where they had become trapped, the National Guard said. The two men and a woman became the latest in a series of evacuations on Hawaii's Big Island forced by the volcano, which has been erupting since May 3.On Saturday, National Guard troops, police and firefighters ushered evacuees from homes on the eastern tip of the island, hours before lava cut off road access to the area, officials said.A stream of lava as wide as three football fields flowed over a highway near a junction at Kapoho, a seaside community rebuilt after a destructive eruption of Kilauea in 1960.About a dozen people remain in the area, but it is not clear whether they are in neighborhoods that are immediately threatened by lava, officials said. The lava flow left Kapoho and the adjacent development of Vacationland cut off from the rest of the island by road, according to the Hawaii County Civil Defense agency.Lava also destroyed a freshwater lake, boiling away all of the water in it, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reported late on Saturday.Authorities since Wednesday had been urging residents of the area to leave before lava spewing from a volcanic fissure at the eastern foot of Kilauea reached the area. The final phase of the evacuation was carried out late on Friday and early on Saturday by fire and police department personnel, with help from the Hawaii National Guard and public works teams, county civil defense spokeswoman Janet Snyder told Reuters by email. An estimated 500 people live in the Kapoho area, but Snyder said it was not immediately clear how many residents, if any, had chosen to stay behind.Another 2,000 people have already been evacuated from Leilani Estates, an area further west where dozens of homes have been devoured or cut off by rivers of lava streaming over the landscape since May 3.For those whose homes have been unscathed, the prolonged strain of uncertainty has grown increasingly difficult.(Reporting by Terray Sylvester; Additional reporting by Sharon Bernstein; Editing by Sandra Maler)

Rains fail to quench western U.S. wildfires-[Reuters]-By Rich McKay-June 5, 2018

(Reuters) - Rains fell on two massive wildfires in the U.S. southwest but it was not enough to quench the fires that were burning through thousands of acres in New Mexico and Colorado early Monday, officials said."The rains came and we're glad of it," said Judith Dyess, a spokeswoman for the joint agency, South West Incident Management Team in New Mexico. "But it didn't do it. We're still burning out of control.""Overnight the fires calm down some, with the lower humidity," Dyess said, "But we're working around the clock."Progress was made, she said. The fires were 23 percent contained by early Monday in the larger of the two fires, the so-called Ute Park Fire in Colfax County, New Mexico. That was a big improvement from the fire being zero percent contained early Sunday before the rains came, Dyess said.It has already scorched some 30,000 acres near Cimarron, a town of about 1,100 people northeast of Santa Fe, according to a bulletin on the New Mexico Fire Information website.Ten fire crews, totaling 510 people, 32 fire engines, eight helicopters and eight bulldozers, were deployed, officials said.About 300 structures were threatened in Cimarron, where officials issued a mandatory evacuation order on Friday. The town lies just northeast of the Santa Fe National Forest, which was closed to the public indefinitely on Friday in a rare measure prompted by the heightened fire risk from prolonged drought.About a dozen outbuildings went up in flames on an adjacent ranch, fire officials said. The cause of the fire, which began on Thursday and has been burning through grassland and pine forest, is not known.A second wildfire started on Friday about 10 miles north of Durango, Colorado, raging across more than 2,255 acres late Sunday and forcing the evacuation of about 1,500 people near the southern border of the San Juan National Forest, the U.S. Forest Service said.Air tankers dropped a red fire retardant slurry at the weekend on land near the fire 10 miles north of Durango along Highway 550, according to the Denver Post. Six helicopters dropped large buckets of water on the flames. The fire was 10 percent contained, according to a fire bulletin from the National Weather Service (NWS) early Monday."Unfortunately there's no more rain in sight," said Brian Roth, a meteorologist with the NWS's Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland."That's it, what they got," he said. "One and done. The rains have moved west into Arizona."(Reporting by Rich McKay in Atlanta; Additional reporting by Brendan O'Brien in Milwaukee and Peter Szekely in New York; Editing by Paul Tait)

THE FIRST JUDGEMENT OF THE EARTH STARTED WITH WATER-IT ONLY MAKES SENSE THE LAST GENERATION WILL BE HAVING FLOODING
GENESIS 7:6-12
6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.
8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,
9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.
10 And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.
GOD PROMISED BY A RAINBOW-THE EARTH WOULD NEVER BE DESTROYED TOTALLY WITH A FLOOD AGAIN.BUT FLOODIING IS A SIGN OF JUDGEMENT.

At least 62 people still homeless after major spring flood-[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-June 5, 2018

At least 62 people remain out of their homes after record flooding hit areas of the province in April and May, according to the Emergency Measures Organization.Geoffrey Downey, a spokesperson for the Emergency Measures Organization, said the number of people who are still homeless after the flood could actually be higher. The estimate of 62 only accounts for people living in temporary housing registered with the Red Cross and not residents living with friends and family and not registered."Some people are unfortunately experts with this," said Downey in an interview with Information Morning Fredericton on Monday."This isn't the first time they've had to do it."Work moving along-The provincial government says recovery work is well underway.According to emergency organization, 2,672 people have applied for disaster financial assistance. While Downey wasn't aware of any of those payments being sent out, he did say 108 people have received advance payments.Out of those, 1,871 requested a health and safety inspection, 1,420 of which have been completed as of June 1.According to Downey, that number would've gone up over the weekend."Weekends are very productive times for the health and safety inspection teams. People are around and the work is getting done," said Downey."Hopefully in days to come we'll be able to report that more people are getting back into their homes."Mike Mallery, an inspector with the provincial government, said most of the properties between Fredericton and Saint John on the St. John River have had their inspections completed. He said the inspection unit is switching their focus to other areas."We still have some outlying properties throughout the province that people have registered that are away from the St. John River and there are still a few probably up around Grand Falls area that we need to pick up," said Mallery.'Back to normal'-The inspection unit has nine teams of five inspectors working on the inspections, according to Mallery."They assess the properties, give the homeowner some idea of what they need to do to get themselves back to normal," said Mallery.Mallery described the extent of damage homeowners have to deal with as "wide [ranging].""It could be ranging from anything from perhaps just an inch of water, debris on the lawn to water onto the first floor, basement structural damage," said Mallery.Downey said if damage is extensive enough, 80 per cent of the property's assessed value, the province would offer to buy out the homeowner, but there are no plans to pay for moving homes to higher ground."The province isn't going to pay to lift your home," said Downey.Downey said it's not too late to sign up for disaster financial assistance and no deadline has been put in place for applications."We're encouraging people that suffered damage to register as soon as possible, but at this point we don't have a deadline so there's no great rush," said Downey.

Justices side with Colorado baker on same-sex wedding cake-[Associated Press]-Mark Sherman, YAHOONEWS-June 5, 2018

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Supreme Court ruled Monday for a Colorado baker who wouldn't make a wedding cake for a same-sex couple in a limited decision that leaves for another day the larger issue of whether a business can invoke religious objections to refuse service to gay and lesbian people. The justices' decision turned on what the court described as anti-religious bias on the Colorado Civil Rights Commission when it ruled against baker Jack Phillips. The justices voted 7-2 that the commission violated Phillips' rights under the First Amendment.Justice Anthony Kennedy said in his majority opinion that the larger issue "must await further elaboration" in the courts. Appeals in similar cases are pending, including one at the Supreme Court from a florist who didn't want to provide flowers for a same-sex wedding. The disputes, Kennedy wrote, "must be resolved with tolerance, without undue disrespect to sincere religious beliefs, and without subjecting gay persons to indignities when they seek goods and services in an open market."The same-sex couple at the heart of the case, Charlie Craig and Dave Mullins, complained to the Colorado commission in 2012 after they visited Phillips' Masterpiece Cakeshop in suburban Denver and the baker quickly told them he would not create a cake for their wedding celebration.Colorado law prohibits discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, and the commission concluded that Phillips' refusal violated the law, despite Phillips' argument that he is opposed to same-sex marriage on religious grounds. Colorado state courts upheld the determination. But when the justices heard arguments in December, Kennedy was plainly bothered by comments by a commission member that the justice said disparaged religion. The commissioner seemed "neither tolerant nor respectful of Mr. Phillips' religious beliefs," Kennedy said in December. That same sentiment suffused his opinion on Monday. "The commission's hostility was inconsistent with the First Amendment's guarantee that our laws be applied in a manner that is neutral toward religion," he wrote.Liberal justices Stephen Breyer and Elena Kagan joined the conservative justices in the outcome. Kagan wrote separately to emphasize the limited ruling.Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sonia Sotomayor dissented. In a statement issued after the ruling Monday, Phillips' Supreme Court lawyer praised the decision."Government hostility toward people of faith has no place in our society, yet the state of Colorado was openly antagonistic toward Jack's religious beliefs about marriage. The court was right to condemn that," said Kristen Waggoner, the Alliance Defending Freedom senior counsel who argued Phillips' case.Waggoner said Phillips is willing to sell ready-made products to anyone who enters his store. But, "he simply declines to express messages or celebrate events that violate his deeply held beliefs," she said.Phillips was at his shop Monday morning, where he was busy answering the phone and getting congratulations from his supporters in person, including his pastor. One woman brought him a bouquet of flowers and others hugged him.The American Civil Liberties Union, which represented the couple in its legal fight, said it was pleased the court did not endorse a broad religion-based exemption from anti-discrimination laws."The court reversed the Masterpiece Cakeshop decision based on concerns unique to the case but reaffirmed its longstanding rule that states can prevent the harms of discrimination in the marketplace, including against LGBT people." said Louise Melling, the ACLU's deputy legal director.Several legal disputes are pending over wedding services, similar to the Phillips case. Video producers, graphic artists and florists are among business owners who say they oppose same-sex marriage on religious grounds and don't want to participate in same-sex weddings.Barronelle Stutzman, a florist in Richland, Washington, has appealed a state Supreme Court ruling that found she violated state law for refusing to provide the wedding flowers for two men who were about to be married. The justices could decide what to do with that appeal by the end of June.___Associated Press writer P. Solomon Banda also contributed to this report from Denver.

Wynne pinpoints the moment she realized she couldn't win-[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-June 5, 2018

Liberal Leader Kathleen Wynne says she can pinpoint the moment she realized she wouldn't have a chance of winning the Ontario election. It was just after the final leaders' debate, held at CBC's Toronto headquarters on May 27. "I think I did pretty well in the debate," she said during an interview on Metro Morning on Monday. "But once the debate was over, we didn't see the numbers move."Those discouraging poll numbers, showing the Liberals trailing far behind the Progressive Conservatives and NDP for Thursday's vote, "meant that we needed to be honest with people that we're not going to be the government," she said. Then came Saturday's emotional announcement, when Wynne acknowledged she would not return as premier. So what does that mean for Liberal candidates? Disputing the idea that she was throwing them under the bus or giving Ontarians tacit permission to vote for the NDP, Wynne said Monday she made Saturday's announcement because she "needed to get myself out of the way." "What I've said to them is, 'Look, this is going to help you in your ridings,'" she said. Paving the way for a PC majority? Wynne said voters are expressing anxiety at the prospect of an NDP or PC government, but that "there is another way.""Here's what I know: the more Liberals we can elect, the more chance there won't be an NDP or Conservative majority," she said. But an hour after Wynne appeared on Metro Morning, NDP Leader Andrea Horwath came out swinging, charging Wynne with asking Ontarians to play a "risky game" that could put the Progressive Conservatives in power."I just fear that if people don't think about what she's asking, which is basically to likely put Doug Ford in the premier's chair, then we could be in a serious situation," Horwath told Metro Morning host Matt Galloway, calling Wynne's announcement both surprising and "disappointing." CBC's poll tracker indicates the NDP has a narrow lead over the PC Party, but continues to favour Ford's party to win a majority government due to a better regional distribution of votes. Wynne still wants to be an MPP -Until this weekend's admission, Wynne had been defiant in the face of daunting poll numbers that suggest the Liberal Party could lose official party status after the vote. In Ontario, parties need at least eight seats to be formally recognized. On Monday, Wynne reaffirmed that regardless of how her party fares on election day, she would like to continue to serve in Don Valley West, where she was first elected as MPP in 2003. "This is the community that I love," she told Galloway. "I want to continue to represent them."

Police clear out two more migrant camps in Paris-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-June 5, 2018

PARIS (Reuters) - French police began on Monday to clear out two illegal refugee camp sites in Paris, following a similar operation last week, in the government's latest attempt to deal with a migrant influx that France has been facing for the past three years.A statement from the Paris police department said authorities were in the process of clearing out two illegal refugee campsites at the Porte des Poissonniers, in northeast Paris, and another site next to the city's Canal Saint Martin.Last week, authorities had cleared out around 1,000 migrants from the larger "Millenaire" camp, also in northeast Paris. Those migrants had subsequently been taken to various accommodation centers around the capital.Europe has faced a migrant crisis since 2015, following wars in Libya and Syria. More than 1 million people from Africa and the Middle East, as well as many from Afghanistan, have tried to reach the continent via Turkey or by sea.In France, much of the migrant influx ended up in the northern port of Calais, where a giant slum was cleared by the authorities in late 2016. Most of the rest have gathered in Paris and the southeast near the Franco-Italian border.(Reporting by Sudip Kar-Gupta; Editing by Simon Cameron-Moore)

HOARDING OF GOLD AND SILVER

JAMES 5:1-3
1 Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you.
2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten.
3 Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.

REVELATION 18:10,17,19

17 For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off,
19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate.

EZEKIEL 7:19
19 They shall cast their silver in the streets, and their gold shall be removed:(CONFISCATED) their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD: they shall not satisfy their souls, neither fill their bowels: because it is the stumblingblock of their iniquity.

1 KINGS 10:13-14
13  And king Solomon gave unto the queen of Sheba all her desire, whatsoever she asked, beside that which Solomon gave her of his royal bounty. So she turned and went to her own country, she and her servants.
14  Now the weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year was six hundred threescore and six talents of gold,

EARTHQUAKES

EZEKIEL 37:7,11-14
7  So I prophesied as I was commanded: and as I prophesied, there was a noise, and behold a shaking, and the bones came together, bone to his bone.(POSSIBLE QUAKE BRINGS ISRAEL BACK TO LIFE-SO NOISE AND SHAKING-QUAKES WILL ALSO DESTROY ISRAELS ENEMIES)
11  Then he said unto me, Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel: behold, they say, Our bones are dried, and our hope is lost: we are cut off for our parts.
12  Therefore prophesy and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, O my people, I will open your graves, and cause you to come up out of your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel.
13  And ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I have opened your graves, O my people, and brought you up out of your graves,
14  And shall put my spirit in you, and ye shall live, and I shall place you in your own land: then shall ye know that I the LORD have spoken it, and performed it, saith the LORD.

MATTHEW 24:7-8
7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.
8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.

MARK 13:8

LUKE 21:11
11 And great earthquakes shall be in divers places,(DIFFERNT PLACES AT THE SAME TIME) and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.

NATO chief says alliance won’t aid Israel if Iran attacks-Jens Stoltenberg tells Der Spiegel that Jewish state is a partner but not a member, and so 'security guarantee' doesn't apply-By AP and TOI staff-JUN 4,18

BERLIN — NATO’s secretary-general said Saturday that the alliance wouldn’t come to Israel’s defense in case of attack by Iran.Jens Stoltenberg told the magazine Der Spiegel that Israel is a partner, but not a member and that NATO’s “security guarantee” doesn’t apply to the Jewish state.Stoltenberg said NATO isn’t involved in Mideast peace efforts or in conflicts in the region.NATO’s treaty requires the alliance to militarily defend members nations, of which there are 28, but not partner ones. Still, partner states regularly contribute to NATO operations such as those in Afghanistan and naval missions off Somalia and in the Mediterranean Sea.Israel has been a partner of NATO since 1994. From 2010 to 2016, its attempts to open an official mission at the organization’s headquarters in Brussels were stymied by Turkey. He spoke at a time of rising Israel-Iran tensions. Israel has been waging a campaign to prevent Iran from establishing a permanent presence in Syria and Lebanon. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also led opposition the Iran nuclear deal, calling for it to be scrapped or fixed. The US withdrew last month.

Iran, Syria deny existence of Iranian military presence in country-Denials by senior officials from both countries come amid reported Israeli-Russian agreement to remove Iran-backed troops from border area-By TOI staff-JUN 4,18

Senior officials from Iran and Syria claimed Saturday there is no Iranian military presence in the country, amid reports that Israel and Russia reached an agreement for the withdrawal of Iran-backed troops from the Israeli-Syrian border area.Ali Shamkhani, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said Iranian troops are only serving in Syria in an advisory capacity and that Iran has no military bases there.“Contrary to the unlawful presence of the US and some regional countries in Syria, Iran’s presence is not imposed and is not the result of an illegal military aggression,” he told the Shargh newspaper, according to state-run Press TV.“As we have declared earlier, Iranian advisers have no presence in southern Syria,” he added.Shamkhani’s remarks came a day after an Arabic-language daily reported Israel and Russia reached a deal to remove Iranian forces from southern Syria, while also giving Israel a green light to strike Iranian targets in Syria. The reported agreement would see Iranian forces leave southwestern Syria, while allowing Israel to strike Iranian assets deep in the country. Israel agreed not to attack Syrian regime targets, the Asharq Al-Awsat report said.Syria’s foreign minister also denied Saturday there is an Iranian military presence on the country.“Since the beginning of the crisis, Iran has supported Syria in the war against terrorism backed and financed regionally and internationally…[there is] no Iranian military presence [in] the Syrian territories; rather there are advisers who work by the side of the Syrian Arab Army,” Syria’s official SANA news agency reported Walim Moallem saying.Moallem’s comments echoed Syrian President Bashar Assad, who days earlier claimed there are no Iranian soldiers in Syria and that reported Iranian casualties in Israeli airstrikes were a “lie.”Israel has repeatedly warned it will not tolerate an Iranian military presence in Syria or the transfer of advanced weaponry to the Lebanese terror group Hezbollah, which is backed by Iran.Long-simmering tensions between Israel and Iran in Syria stepped up considerably in recent months, beginning in February when an Iranian drone carrying explosives was flown from the T-4 air base in central Syria into Israeli airspace, and was shot down by an IAF helicopter.Iran last month launched a few dozens rockets toward the Golan Heights, in retaliation for an Israeli airstrike in April on the T-4 base in which seven Iranians were killed. Israel in return said it struck dozens of Iranian targets in Syria, as well as Syrian air defense systems that fired at Israeli aircraft during the raids.Shortly after those airstrikes, the Israel Defense Forces revealed “Operation Chess,” acknowledging its ongoing intelligence and air campaign to prevent Tehran from carrying out reprisals for the April strike on T-4.

US said wary of Israel-Russia deal to remove Iranians from southern Syria-Arabic daily says Trump administration fears a reported agreement for the Syrian regime to return to border area eases pressure on Assad-By TOI staff-JUN 4,18

The United States is wary of a reported agreement between Israel and Russia that would see the withdrawal of Iranian-backed troops from Syria’s border with Israel and the return of the Syrian army to the south of the country, an Arabic daily reported Saturday.“The US administration wants to continue exerting pressures on the regime,” Asharq Al-Awsat quoted Western diplomats as saying. On Friday, the newspaper reported Israel and Russia had reached an agreement green-lighting Israeli strikes on Iranian targets in Syria, as well as the withdrawal of Tehran-backed troops from Syria’s border with Israel. The reported agreement would see Iranian forces leave southwestern Syria, while allowing Israel to strike Iranian assets deep in the country. Israel agreed not to attack Syrian regime targets, the report said.A Russian source told Asharq al-Awsat that Russia was tight-lipped about the agreement to maintain “balance” in its diplomatic ties with Israel and Iran.Israel has repeatedly vowed to prevent Iran establishing a permanent presence in Syria and Lebanon and has carried out dozens of air strikes against Iran-backed forces and attempts to smuggle advanced weapons to Hezbollah.“Russia is somehow embarrassed because the talks with the Israelis mainly focused on a plan to remove Iran and its forces from southern Syria,” the source told the paper. Russia is a main ally of Iran.Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations later said he believed a deal regarding the withdrawal of Iranian forces from the border area had been reached between his country and Israel.“As I understand it, an agreement was reached,” Vasily Nebenzya told reporters, according to Russian news agency RIA Novosti. “At this point, I can not answer if it is being realized, but as far as I understand, the parties that were involved in reaching an agreement are satisfied with what they have achieved.”He said even if the reported agreement was not executed immediately, it would happen in the near future. The reported agreement came after Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman met his Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu in Moscow on Thursday for talks focused on Syria.Liberman thanked Russia for “understanding” Israel’s security concerns. However, neither Jerusalem, nor Moscow, publicly acknowledged any agreement between the sides regarding Iran’s military presence in Syria.“It is important to continue the dialogue between us and to keep an open line between the IDF and Russian army,” Liberman told Shoigu. Before leaving Israel for Russia, Liberman said Israel was committed to “preventing Iran and its offshoots from establishing themselves in Syria.”The Kremlin said President Vladimir Putin spoke with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Thursday evening to discuss the situation in Syria. Moscow said the conversation focused on “some aspects of the Syrian settlement,” which it didn’t specify, following up on the two leaders’ talks in Moscow earlier this month. The Liberman-Shoigu meeting came on the heels of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov‘s demand Wednesday that all foreign forces — including those from Iran, Turkey and the US — leave southwestern Syria as soon as possible, as well as his remarks Monday at a press conference in Moscow that only the Syrian regime should field military forces in the country’s southern border areas.“As regards the confrontation between Israel and Iran in Syria, we have agreements on the southwestern de-escalation zone. These agreements have been reached between Russia, the United States and Jordan. Israel was informed about them as we were working on them. They [the agreements] stipulate that this de-escalation zone should consolidate stability, while all non-Syrian forces must be withdrawn from this area,” Lavrov said.Lavrov’s comment apparently referred to areas including the Syrian Golan Heights region abutting the Israeli Golan Heights and the border with Jordan, and indicated that Russia was open to Israeli demands that Iranian forces be kept far from Israel’s borders. The return of the Syrian army to Israel’s northern border in return for the distancing of Iran and its Lebanon-based proxy Hezbollah from the area has been the subject of back channel discussions between Israel and Russia over recent weeks.Liberman visited Russia with a defense establishment delegation, hoping to flesh out the understandings to give Syrian President Bashar Assad control over the Syria-Israel border region.Netanyahu’s office continues to insist publicly that Israel demands the complete ouster of Iran and Hezbollah from the whole of Syria.A source told the Ynet news site on Thursday that “Israel is uninterested in partial agreements, but rather in an exit of all Iranian forces from Syria.”On Wednesday, Netanyahu told ministers that he had spoken with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo primarily to urge the US government to demand that an evolving agreement on troop deployment in Syria between the US, Russia and Jordan make clear that Iranian forces must leave the whole of the country. The agreement appears to be slated to demand that Iranian and Iran-backed forces stay 20 kilometers from the Israeli and Jordanian borders.Amidst a flurry of activity relating to Iran, Meir Ben-Shabbat, Israel’s National Security Adviser, flew to Washington on Wednesday to coordinate positions with the Trump administration.Next week, Netanyahu will leave for France and Germany to discuss Iran’s role in Syria and the nuclear deal which the Europeans are trying to salvage after the US withdrawal earlier this month. He is due to meet with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron, and UK Prime Minister Theresa May.

Michael Oren, French envoy in Twitter spat over UN Gaza vote-Deputy minister accuses Paris of hypocrisy by supporting 'anti-Semitic resolution; French envoy questions whether Oren even read it and says he 'insulted France'-By TOI staff and Agencies-JUN 4,18

Israeli deputy minister Michael Oren on Saturday slammed France for supporting a UN Security Council resolution on Gaza, saying Paris was hypocritical for supporting an “anti-Semitic resolution.”Oren’s comments, in a tweet, prompted outrage from France’s ambassador in Israel Hélène Le Gal who accused Oren of not even reading the resolution and “insulting France.”On Friday the United States vetoed an Arab-backed UN draft resolution calling for protective measures for the Palestinians that won backing from ten countries at the Security Council. A US resolution condemning Hamas also failed.“Praise for the US for vetoing Security Council resolution on Gaza that didn’t mention Hamas and condemned the IDF for defending Israel,” tweeted Oren, the deputy minister in the Prime Minister’s Office who is responsible for diplomacy.Praise for the U.S. for vetoing Security Council resolution on Gaza that didn’t mention Hamas and condemned the IDF for defending Israel. Oren for insulting France on the eve of the visit of your Prime Minister to Paris,” she tweeted back. “You didn’t read the resolution. It was not perfect but condemned all the violence against Israel. France is adamantly supporting Israel’s security.”Shame on you M. Oren for insulting France on the eve of the visit of your Prime Minister to Paris. You didn’t read the resolution. It was not perfect but condemned all the violence against Israel. France is adamantly supporting Israel’s security.— Hélène Le Gal (@HeleneLeGal) June 2, 2018-Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to visit Paris and Berlin next week, with talks expected to focus on Iran.At the UN, France, China, and Russia were among the countries that voted in favor of the draft put forward by Kuwait on behalf of Arab countries. Four countries, Ethiopia, the UK, the Netherlands, and Poland abstained.A draft resolution requires nine votes to be adopted in the 15-member council and no veto from the five permanent members — Britain, China, France, Russia, and the United States.US Ambassador Nikki Haley told the council the measure was “wildly inaccurate in its characterization of recent events in Gaza” by condemning Israel for the violence. The Kuwait-drafted text had called for “measures to guarantee the safety and protection” of Palestinian civilians in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, and requested a UN report to propose an “international protection mechanism.”The US, meanwhile, brought its own text to the council: A proposal that would condemn Hamas for its role in the escalation of violence in Gaza in the last two months. The United States was the only country that voted in favor of the draft resolution in the Security Council. Eleven countries abstained while Bolivia, Kuwait, and Russia opposed it.Israeli envoy to the UN Danny Danon lamented the failure of Washington’s motion, saying “Peace and stability will come to our region only when the international community is brave enough to call out the terrorists by name.”He condemned Kuwait’s “hypocritical” resolution that did not “even mention the terrorists of Hamas as the root cause of violence and unrest in our region.” However, he asserted that, thanks to the Americans’ position, “the rules of the game are changing in the Security Council and that the double standard against Israel will not stand.”It was the second time that Haley has resorted to US veto power to block a UN measure on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In December, Haley vetoed a draft resolution that rejected President Donald Trump’s decision to move the US embassy to Jerusalem after all 14 other council members supported it.In two months of mass protests at the Gaza border, some 110 Palestinians were killed and thousands wounded by Israeli military fire. Dozens of the fatalities were members of terror groups, Hamas and Islamic Jihad acknowledged. Israel said its troops were defending its border and accused Hamas of trying to carry out attacks under the cover of the protests.Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad also bombarded southern Israel with rockets and mortar shells Tuesday, and Israel responded by striking targets throughout Gaza. Hamas said Wednesday it had agreed to a cease-fire with Israel.Israel and Hamas are bitter enemies and have fought three wars since the Islamic group seized control of Gaza in 2007. Hamas seeks to destroy Israel, and has said the border protests are intended to erase the border and ultimately “liberate Palestine.”

IDF troops open fire at Gazans breaching border fence-Army says Palestinians were seeking to damage 'security infrastructure' in Israel, fled back into Strip after being shot at-By TOI staff-JUN 4,18

Israeli troops opened fire on two Palestinians spotted crossing into Israeli territory from the Gaza Strip on Saturday afternoon, the army said, amid heightened tensions along the Gaza border. The Israel Defense Forces said troops patrolling the area saw the “terrorist cell” as it breached the border along the southern portion of the border fence. Soldiers opened fire at the Palestinians, who fled back into Gaza. The army said the Palestinians were seeking to damage “security infrastructure” in Israel. There were no reports of injuries.Elsewhere along the border Saturday, incendiary kites flown from Gaza sparked fires near two Israeli communities adjacent to the Palestinian territory. Firefighters were working to put out the burning fields encroaching on Kibbutz Nir Am and Kibbutz Kissufim. On Friday, the army said “thousands of rioters” participated in clashes along the security fence, “burning tires adjacent to the security fence and attempting to damage security infrastructure.”The army said that an IDF vehicle came under fire during the riots and that a Palestinian who breached the border fence in northern Gaza planted a grenade that exploded. No Israeli soldiers were injured.Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry said a volunteer medic was shot dead by Israeli soldiers during the clashes that injured another 100 protesters.Palestinians identified the dead woman as Razan al-Najjar, 21. She was shot near Khan Younis in the south of the territory, health ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra said, bringing the toll of Gazans killed by Israeli fire since the end of March to 123, according to a count by the Hamas-run ministry.Hamas and fellow terror organization Islamic Jihad have acknowledged that dozens of those killed were their members.According to Qudra, Najjar was a volunteer with the ministry, wearing the white uniform of a medic when she was shot in the chest attending to a wounded protester near the fence.Israel says it is facing weekly attacks by violent protesters at the border. It says the riots are orchestrated by Hamas, which rules Gaza, and used as cover for attempted terror attacks and breaches of the border fence. In response to reports of Najjar’s death, the IDF said soldiers at the scene were using riot dispersal means against the protesters and live fire in accordance with army regulations, but would investigate the incident. It added that cases such as Najjar’s, “in which civilians are allegedly killed by IDF fire, are thoroughly examined by the relevant levels of command and are checked by the General Staff Fact Finding Assessment Mechanism.”Agencies contributed to this report.

Gaza preschoolers stage mock killing of Israeli soldier-Graduation at Islamic Jihad-linked preschool features dramatization of Israel's destruction by kids in military fatigues armed with toy guns-By TOI staff-JUN 4,18

Children at a Gaza preschool linked to a Palestinian terrorist organization recently held a graduation ceremony in which the preschoolers wore military uniforms and brandished toy machine guns as they performed a mock hostage-taking and killing of an Israeli solider, a media watchdog group said.Footage of the May ceremony at the Al-Hoda preschool showed the children clad in Islamic Jihad fatigues storming an Israeli building on “Al-Quds Street,” capturing a classmate dressed in traditional ultra-Orthodox Jewish garb and killing another dressed in an IDF uniform. After the hostage is whisked off stage and the soldier is laying prone on the ground, one of the children displays a sign that says “Israel has fallen” in both Arabic and Hebrew. The five-minute performance is set to loud explosions and gunfire. After the performance, several children in military uniforms armed with toy guns return to the stage to demonstrate military formations while an address by late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat plays in the background. The Middle East Media Research Institute, which provided a translation of the video, reported that Al-Hoda is affiliated with the Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorist group, and has held similar ceremonies in the past.MEMRI said that unlike in previous years, Al-Hoda did not post the footage of the graduation to its usual social media channels, instead directing parents to a separate YouTube channel that featured the performance. The graduation ceremony came amid an upsurge in violence in Gaza.In two months of mass violent protests at the Gaza border, some 110 Palestinians were killed and thousands wounded by Israeli military fire. Hamas and Islamic Jihad have acknowledged that dozens of the fatalities were their own members.Israel has accused Hamas of using the clashes as a cover to carry out attacks and attempt to breach the border fence. Both Gaza-based terrorist groups also took responsibility for bombarding southern Israel with dozens of rockets and mortar shells earlier this week. The IDF responded by striking Hamas and Islamic Jihad targets throughout Gaza, before an unofficial ceasefire was reportedly reached between the sides.

Army thwarts attempted tractor ramming attack in Hebron, assailant killed-IDF says Palestinian man shot dead after trying to run over troops with small tractor in West Bank city; no soldiers injured-By TOI staff-JUN 4,18

Israeli troops thwarted an attempted car-ramming attack Saturday in the southern West Bank city of Hebron, the army said. The driver of the vehicle tried to run over soldiers stationed on a road leading to the Tomb of the Patriarchs but was shot dead by troops, according to the Israel Defense Forces. The army said the Palestinian assailant first attempted to run over an officer and another soldier with a small tractor.“The force performed the protocols for stopping a suspicious person, during which the terrorist turned around and continued to drive in order to run over civilians passing by,” the IDF said.“Another soldier standing on the roof of a nearby building identified the threat toward the civilians on the road and opened fire at the terrorist, from which he was killed,” it added. The army said the attacker was a 35-year-old from the nearby village of Beit Ummar. Palestinian media named him as Rami Sabarnah. No soldiers were injured during the incident, the IDF said.

Netanyahu to push hard line on Iran during Europe trip-Future of nuclear deal after US pullout and Iranian presence in Syria expected to dominate PM's talks with heads of France, Germany and UK-By AFP and TOI staff-JUN 4,18

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will travel to Europe Monday to push his hawkish stance on Iran to leaders looking to salvage the nuclear agreement after the United States withdrew.Netanyahu, a fierce opponent of the agreement and the Iranian regime, will meet in turn with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Theresa May.Germany, France and the United Kingdom are three of the signatories of the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) between world powers and Iran, aimed at keeping Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons. The European leaders have been scrambling to preserve the landmark deal after slamming US President Donald Trump’s May 8 decision to withdraw and reimpose sanctions. The fallout from America rejecting the accord is likely to dominate the talks, with Netanyahu expected to firmly oppose European efforts to sustain it.“I will discuss with them ways to block Iran’s nuclear aspirations and Iran’s expansion in the Middle East,” Netanyahu said on Monday of his European meetings, noting the issues were “crucial to Israel’s security.”After years lobbying against the 2015 deal, the decision by close ally Trump to ditch the accord has been greeted as a major triumph by Netanyahu, who has long opposed the deal. The prime minister has dismissed European insistence that the agreement is the best option to prevent Tehran getting the bomb, like Trump arguing that it in fact brought Tehran closer to obtaining nuclear weapons. He has also said that a cash influx into Iran following the lifting of international sanctions as part of the accord has fueled the expansion of Tehran’s military influence in the region, especially in neighboring Syria.-‘No alternative’-But while the US retreat from the deal is seen as a personal victory for Netanyahu, it could also represent a leap into the unknown for Israel and the broader Middle East. While foes Iran and Israel have been kept at bay for decades, an unprecedented May 10 escalation in Syria that saw Israel bomb Iranian targets after Iran fired rockets upon the Golan Heights, has sparked fears of open war.“An Iranian departure from southern Syria alone will not suffice,” Netanyahu said on Tuesday.“The long-range missiles that Iran is working to station in Syria will endanger us even beyond the range of several kilometers from southern Syria; therefore, Iran needs to leave Syria altogether.”While Netanyahu has publicly insisted Iran must withdraw from all of Syria, Arabic-language daily Asharq al-Awsat reported Friday that Israel and Russia had reached an agreement on the withdrawal of Tehran-backed troops from Syria’s border with Israel, as well as allowing Israeli strikes on Iranian targets in Syria-The reported agreement would see Iranian forces leave southwestern Syria, while allowing Israel to strike Iranian assets deep in the country. Israel agreed not to attack Syrian regime targets, the report said.Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations later said he believed a deal had been reached, but said he did not know if it was already being implemented and was mum on its specifics.Israel has repeatedly vowed to prevent Iran establishing a permanent presence in Syria and Lebanon and has carried out dozens of air strikes against Iran-backed forces and attempts to smuggle advanced weapons to Hezbollah. The Europeans have acknowledged concerns over Iran’s regional military activities and its ballistic activities, but sought to maintain the JCPOA while creating a separate arrangement on these issues.Contrary to what the US and Israel say, Europe insists the 2015 agreement works and Iran has abided by it.“There is no alternative,” the EU’s foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said on Monday.Merkel, May and Macron are still waiting for the Israelis and Americans to present another way to curb Iran’s nuclear program, but are under no illusions it will happen in next week’s meetings, according to a European diplomat.Divided on other issues, the Europeans have emphasized their cohesion on the JCPOA, fearing that ripping it up could benefit hardliners in Iran and push Tehran to resume large-scale uranium enrichment. If that happens, the fear is it will once again make striking Iran a real option for Israel. On Thursday, a former Mossad chief said that in 2011 Netanyahu had ordered him and the military chief of staff to prepare an attack on Iran within 15 days.According to Tamir Pardo’s interview on the “Uvda” television program, such a directive could either mean “he really means it,” or be a means to deliver a message, for example to the US, and perhaps drive it to take action.Other major issues look set to be left on the sidelines in the talks with European leaders. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is in the spotlight after the worst military flare-up in Gaza since a 2014 war raised fears this week of yet another full-blown conflict in the beleaguered Palestinian enclave. The exchange of fire, which saw Israel strike dozens of targets in response to the firing of over 100 rockets and mortars at southern Israeli communities by the Hamas and Islamic Jihad terror groups, came after weeks of deadly Hamas-led clashes along the border. But along with other subjects, such as bilateral relations or the rise of anti-Semitism in Europe, it will likely remain overshadowed by Iran.Expectations of any progress on the conflict with the Palestinians are low.Peace prospects remain as distant as ever and the diplomatic process in limbo as the sides wait for a plan long promised by the Trump administration.

EU, China vow to uphold Iran nuclear deal-As signatories scramble to salvage pact after US exit, European foreign policy chief says all parties have 'duty' to implement 2015 accord-By Agencies and TOI staff-JUN 4,18

The European Union and China said they will do their utmost to keep afloat an international agreement to stop Iran developing nuclear weapons despite the US abandoning the pact.Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Friday that “we will be unswerving in upholding it.”Speaking alongside EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini, he said the agreement has been endorsed by the UN and that “every party has the duty to implement it.”Mogherini, who helps oversee the implementation of the 2015 nuclear deal, praised China and said Beijing, the EU and other partners are working “in full coordination” to save the pact.China, Russia and the Western European powers of UK, France, and Germany, all of which signed the 2015 Iran nuclear accord, are scrambling to save the pact following US President Donald Trump’s decision to quit the agreement and reinstate sanctions.Trump faulted the deal for not addressing Iran’s ballistic missile program or support for regional terror groups, while also arguing it brought the Iranians closer to obtaining nuclear weapons. His criticism of the deal has been echoed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who will travel to Germany, France and Britain next week for talks expected to focus on Iran.Beijing, Iran’s top trade partner and one of the biggest buyers of its oil, has signaled that it intends to keep working with the Islamic regime despite the US move.Next week, China’s President Xi Jinping will meet Iran’s Hassan Rouhani on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) meeting on June 9-10 in Qingdao, according to Wang. Russian President Vladimir Putin will also attend the summit. The summit will discuss a three-year action plan to “fight the three evil forces” — terrorism, separatism and extremism — and strengthen cooperation on tackling cybersecurity breaches and drug trafficking, Wang said.China will also push for “reforms to the multilateral trading regime” connecting the markets of SCO members, which account for nearly 40 percent of the global population, he said.Chinese businesses are expected to step up activities in Iran to fill the void left by the exit of US companies and the possible withdrawal of European rivals for fear of punitive measures enforced by the US.

Israeli firefighters battle to contain huge blazes sparked by Gaza fire kites-Three separate blazes rage, destroy hundreds of acres of fields and a nature reserve along the Gaza border-By TOI staff-JUN 4,18

Firefighters were working to put out three large fires along the Gaza Strip border, believed to have been started by  incendiary kites flown from the coastal enclave on Saturday. The largest fire was near to Kibbutz Carmia, adjacent to the northern Gaza Strip. Preliminary estimates suggested that between 2,000 to 3,000 dunam (500 to 740 acres) of fields and parts of a nature reserve adjacent to the kibbutz were destroyed.Officials at the Israel Nature and Parks Authority estimated that at least one third of the Carmia reserve had been destroyed.Residents were working alongside with firefighters to try to contain the fires that have become almost daily occurrences since the start of the “March of Return” protests along the border at the end of March.During the protests, Gazans have been flying kites into Israel outfitted with Molotov cocktails and containers of burning fuel, setting fire to large swaths of land.It has become a widely adopted tactic during the weekly “March of Return” clashes on the Gaza border, which Israel accuses the Hamas terror group of orchestrating as a cover for attacks and attempts to breach the border fence.Firefighters were also working to gain control of a blaze near Kibbutz Be’eri, which borders the central Gaza Strip.Earlier Saturday, an additional fire had broke out in fields belonging to Kibbutz Nir Am also along the northern Gaza Strip. On Thursday, firefighters battled similar brush fires between the Kissufim and Ein Hashlosha kibbutzim that authorities suspect were caused by firebomb-laden kites flown across the security fence by Palestinians.Local residents told Israel Radio they were concerned that they would not be provided compensation for the damage, as the burden for proving they were victims of a terror attack fell on them.Zionist Union MK Eitan Brosh told the radio that lawmakers from his party would tour the area Sunday and work to provide the residents with solutions to their ongoing distress. The violent demonstrations were meant to end on May 15, but Hamas leaders have said they want them to continue. In the past month, at least 300 attack kites have been flown across the border, starting hundreds of fires and causing an estimated tens of millions of shekels’ worth of damages.Military planners have begun implementing new measures to combat the assaults, including options drawn from the IDF’s responses to rocket launches and other terror attacks.

Israel says it won’t recognize Ugandan Jewish community — report-Interior Ministry rules man from Abayudaya cannot immigrate, rolling back recognition from Jewish Agency-By JTA    4 June 2018

Israel has ruled that it will not recognize Uganda’s Jewish community, according to an newspaper report Thursday. The Interior Ministry denied the request of a Ugandan Jew, Kibitz Yosef, to immigrate to Israel, Haaretz reported. The ministry said Yosef, who is staying at a kibbutz in southern Israel, had to leave the country by June 14, according to the report.A representative told Haaretz that the decision represented Israel’s stance on the Ugandan Jewish community, not just the applicant in question. The ministry said Yosef could challenge its decision in the High Court of Justice. The Uganda community, also called the Abayudaya, numbers approximately 2,000 and traces its roots to the early 20th century, when a former leader read the Bible and embraced Judaism. Most members were converted under the auspices of U.S. Conservative rabbis and thus are not recognized as Jewish by Israel’s mostly ultra-Orthodox Chief Rabbinate. In 2016, the Jewish Agency for Israel recognized the community, seemingly opening a path for its members to immigrate to Israel. However, the Abuyudaya have struggled to obtain recognition to do so. In December, Israel denied a visa application by a member of the community to study at a yeshiva in Israel, leading to accusations of racism. This week, the Chief Rabbinate published a list of draft criteria for religious courts in the Diaspora to have its conversions accepted in the Jewish state. If enacted, Jewish converts in America may face additional hurdles in being recognized as Jewish by the Chief Rabbinate, which controls Jewish marriage, divorce, conversion and burial in the Jewish state. However, it does not have authority over who can immigrate to the country.
