US 'playing the terrorism game' in Syria warns Lavrov-[AFP]-YAHOONEWS-April 8, 2017

Moscow (AFP) - The United States is "playing the terrorism game", Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Saturday during his first phone talks with his US counterpart Rex Tillerson since the US air strikes on Syria last week."A country which battles against terrorism is just playing the terrorism game," and "creates regional and global security threats", Lavrov warned Tillerson, according to a Russian foreign ministry statement.Lavrov also reaffirmed Russia's position that accusations that the Syrian regime had launched a chemical weapons attack on the Syrian town of Khan Sheikhun last week "are not in line with reality".The United States on Thursday fired 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles from warships in the Mediterranean at the Shayrat airfield near Homs in central Syria. The previous day US President Donald Trump said pictures of the Khan Sheikhun victims in agony, had "an enormous impact" on him.Saturday's phone call was the first between the top diplomats of Russia and the US since the strikes on the Syrian airfield.US Secretary of State Tillerson is due to arrive in Moscow on Tuesday for two days of talks. On Friday, Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Moscow expects "explanations", during Tillerson's visit, for the US air strike on the Syrian airbase-For his part, Tillerson on Friday said he was disappointed" by Russia's reaction "because it indicates their continued support" for the Syrian regime of President Bashar al-Assad.

US sends message to N. Korea, China with Syria strike-[AFP]-Park Chan-Kyong-YAHOONEWS-April 8, 2017

The US missile strike on Syria contained a clear message for North Korea and its main ally China, analysts said, but not one strong enough to push Pyongyang off its nuclear weapons path. While the timing was largely coincidental, the fact that US President Donald Trump ordered the strike while hosting a summit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping carried particular resonance given that the North's nuclear ambitions -– and how best to thwart them –- was among the top agenda items of their meeting. And exercising the military option added some extra weight to Trump's recent threat of unilateral action against Pyongyang if Beijing fails to help curb its neighbour's nuclear weapons programme.Kim Yong-Hyun, a professor at Dongguk University, said the strike against Syria was a statement of intent that was meant for a wide readership."It signals to Pyongyang that the US has a new sheriff in town who isn't hesitant about pulling his gun from the holster," Kim said. But while the move might have given the North pause, Pyongyang on Saturday said the strikes only confirmed its view that nuclear weapons were key to guaranteeing its future survival."The reality of today shows that we must stand against power with power and it proves a million times over that our decision to strengthen our nuclear deterrence has been the right choice," state media reported an unnamed foreign ministry spokesman as saying. The Syria strikes were an "intolerable act of aggression," he added.- Nuclear determination -The North has carried out five nuclear tests -- two of them last year -- and expert satellite imagery analysis suggests it could well be preparing for a sixth.US intelligence officials say Pyongyang could be less than two years away from developing a nuclear warhead that could reach the continental United States. If Thursday's strike was a warning to other countries, it was one with which Pyongyang, which regularly cites US hostility as the driving force behind its nuclear weapons development, is quite familiar."Trump's attack on Syria is unlikely to have any significant effect on a North Korea that is already well versed in the threat posed by the United States," said Joel Wit, a senior fellow at the US-Korea Institute at Johns Hopkins University. At the time of the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003, then North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il disappeared from public view for around six weeks -- and was widely believed to have gone into hiding for fear of a US attack.Chang Yong-Seok, a senior researcher at the Institute for Peace and Unification at Seoul National University, said Kim's son, current leader Kim Jong-Un, had no reason to take such precautions."Armed with nuclear weapons, he would hardly flinch at the attack in Syria," Chang said.As if to underline the point, North Korean state media released photos of a smiling Kim inspecting a mushroom farm.- Warning to China? -The question then arises as to what impact the US president's willingness to exercise his military muscle may have on China's thinking.China is North Korea's economic lifeline and as such enjoys more leverage over its maverick neighbour than any other country.Like his predecessors in the White House, Trump wants China to do more to influence the North's behaviour, but has gone further than others in threatening to go it alone if Beijing fails to step up to the plate. In that context, the strike against Syria may resonate more firmly in Beijing than Pyongyang."It's a signal that Trump's administration will not only talk, they will act," said Wang Dong, Associate Professor and Director of the School of International Studies at Peking University. While China has clearly lost patience with Pyongyang's nuclear provocations, it is extremely wary of any response that might bring about North Korea's collapse and chaos on its doorstep."From the Chinese point of view, there is still room to explore a path for a diplomatic solution," Wang said.Jia Qingguo, a professor of International Relations at Beijing University, said the North's nuclear arsenal and highly sensitive geopolitical position meant the fallout of any military action could be catastrophic."A small kick could provoke big disasters. It's not like Iraq," Jia said.Although China's state media went strong on photos and coverage of the Xi-Trump summit, it gave little space to news of the strikes against Syria, with few editorials or commentaries. One exception was the nationalist-leaning Global Times, which suggested that Trump's "show of force" was rash and ill-considered."This was Trump's first major move in international affairs, and it leaves an impression that the decision was made in haste and not without contradiction," the newspaper said.

U.S. strikes destroyed Syrian means to deliver chemical weapons - admiral-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-April 8, 2017

COLOGNE, Germany (Reuters) - U.S. Navy Admiral Michelle Howard said on Saturday U.S. cruise missile strikes on an air base in Syria had destroyed the means to deliver chemical weapons from that base, and the U.S. military remained ready to carry out further strikes if needed.Howard, the four-star officer who leads U.S. Naval Forces in Europe and Africa, told Reuters the United States had decided to launch the strikes after the United Nations failed to pass a resolution condemning a deadly chemical weapons attack that killed scores of people in rebel-held Khan Sheikhoun.Washington has blamed the Syrian government for the attack on Tuesday. The Syrian government has strongly denied responsibility and blamed the deaths on leaks from a rebel chemical arms store it says was hit by a Syrian air strike."We conducted strikes against an air field which was the means by which the chemicals were launched into the air. Those means don't exist now," Howard said in an interview during a missile defence event in Cologne."We saw the misuse of chemical weapons and said, 'OK, we need to send a very clear message'".Asked about the U.S. military's plan for how to deal with any potential further attacks, Howard said the military was ready to respond if other civilian options failed."As the civilian leadership works through what their options are, if other options don't pan out, then it's generally the military that gets asked to do something."Howard declined to give any details about the flight path of the missiles, or the U.S. military assessment of the damage caused, but said she was confident the strikes had hit their intended target."The intention was to take out the airfield and to remove the means of the delivery of chemical weapons. I feel that was accomplished," she said. The cruise missiles were launched by two ships in the European region, the USS Porter and the USS Ross, in close coordination with U.S. Central Command, which is responsible for the Middle East.Howard lauded the quick action taken by the commanders and crews of the two ships in response to the use of chemical weapons by the Syrian regime.Howard said the integration of the strikes was "flawless" and showed the ability of the U.S. Navy to project power around the world.(Reporting by Andrea Shalal, editing by David Evans)

Syrian governor confirms air base operating again-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-April 8, 2017

BEIRUT (Reuters) - A Syrian air base targeted in a U.S. cruise missile attack is operating again, the governor of Syria's Homs province confirmed on Saturday. The United States launched the missile strikes on Friday in response to a chemical attack that killed 90 people including 30 children. It says the Syrian government launched the attack from the Shayrat air base. Damascus has strongly denied carrying out the attack and says it does not use chemical weapons. The Syrian army said on Friday the attack had caused extensive damage to the base, which the United States says it targeted with 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles."The airport is operating as a first phase," Homs governor Talal Barazi told Reuters. "Planes have taken off from it," he added, without saying when.Asked if it was true that Syrian planes were now taking off from Shayrat or that the air base is operating, a Pentagon spokesman referred questions to the Syrian government. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based organisation that reports on the war, said warplanes had taken off from the base on Friday and carried out air strikes on rebel-held areas in the eastern Homs countryside. An activist with an opposition air raid warning service said however that the first flight from the base was on Saturday morning.U.S. President Donald Trump suggested on Twitter that the runway itself had not been the target of the missile strikes."The reason you don't generally hit runways is that they are easy and inexpensive to quickly fix (fill in and top)!", he said.A senior military source in the alliance fighting in support of President Bashar al-Assad said the airbase had been mostly evacuated thanks to a warning from Russia, which has deployed its military to Syria in support of Assad. The senior military source, a non-Syrian, said only a few out-of-service jets were destroyed. The United States warned Russia ahead of the attack.Assad is also backed in the war by Iran and the Lebanese group Hezbollah, and other Iranian-backed groups. The Pentagon said the missiles targeted aircraft, hardened aircraft shelters, petroleum and logistical storage areas, ammunition supply bunkers, air defense systems, and radars.(Reporting by Kinda Makieh in Damascus, Laila Bassan and Tom Perry in Beirut, Yeganeh Torbati in Washington; Writing by Tom Perry; Editing by Hugh Lawson)

Assad allies vow to keep battling 'terrorism' in Syria-[AFP]-YAHOONEWS-April 8, 2017

Beirut (AFP) - The Russian and Iranian army chiefs vowed Saturday to keep battling "terrorists" in Syria, a day after a US missile onslaught on a Syrian airbase following a suspected chemical weapons attack.General Valery Gerasimov and Major General Mohammad Bagheri spoke by phone and "condemned the American operation against a Syrian airbase which is an aggression against an independent country", Iran's state news agency IRNA said.US warships in the Mediterranean launched a barrage of 59 cruise missiles at Shayrat airbase in Syria early on Friday, after 87 people including 31 children were killed in a suspected aerial chemical attack on rebel-held Khan Sheikhun.Another air strike on Saturday on the same town in the northwestern province of Idlib killed a woman, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported. It said it was unclear if the latest strike was by Syrian warplanes or those of Damascus's ally Russia. The monitor also reported an air strike on Urum al-Joz, another Idlib town, on Saturday that killed 18 civilians including five children. The Observatory said the Urum al-Joz raid was believed to have been carried out by Russian aircraft.Idlib province is controlled by a rebel alliance that includes a former Al-Qaeda affiliate, and is regularly targeted by both the Syrian government and its Russian ally.Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused Washington of "playing the terrorism game", during his first phone talks with his US counterpart Rex Tillerson since the US air strikes on Syria.A foreign ministry statement said Lavrov also reaffirmed Russia's position that accusations that the Syrian regime had launched a chemical weapons attack on Khan Sheikhun "are not in line with reality".- 'Intolerable aggression' -Much of the international community accused Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government of responsibility for Tuesday's suspected chemical attack on Khan Sheikhun, though Damascus denied responsibility. The strike prompted Washington to take its first direct military action against Assad's government, with missiles raining down on the Shayrat airbase in central Syria.North Korea on Saturday denounced the American attack, calling it an "intolerable act of aggression" that "proves a million times over" that strengthening its nuclear programme was the right choice. The statement by the Iranian and Russian military chiefs said they both vowed to continue their military cooperation in support of Assad "until the total defeat of the terrorists and those that support them", according to Iran's Mehr news agency. The American strikes "aim at slowing the victories of the Syrian army and its allies, and reinforcing terrorist groups", they said in a statement.Iran and Russia are Assad's closest allies, and label all opponents of his regime as "terrorists".Both Tehran and Moscow have defended Assad against Western allegations that his regime carried out the suspected chemical weapons attack on Khan Sheikhun.- 'Terrorists celebrating' -Iran's President Hassan Rouhani Saturday criticised his US counterpart Donald Trump for the missile attack on the Syrian airbase."This man who is now in office in America claimed that he wanted to fight terrorism but today all terrorists in Syria are celebrating the US attack," he said.As the Arab League on Saturday warned against a "dangerous escalation" in Syria, influential Iraqi Shiite cleric Moqtada Sadr called on Assad to step down and on Washington and Moscow to stop intervening in the conflict."I would consider it fair for President Bashar al-Assad to resign and leave power, allowing the dear people of Syria to avoid the scourge of war and terrorist oppression," he said.Several Iraqi Shiite militias, some of them directly supported by Iran, are helping Assad's camp in the Syria conflict by sending fighting units across the border. On the political front, Britain's Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson cancelled a scheduled visit to Moscow next week, his office announced, saying "developments in Syria have changed the situation fundamentally".In Syria on Saturday, hundreds more Syrian rebels and their families left the last opposition-held neighbourhood of the central city of Homs, the state news agency reported.SANA said at least 242 rebels had left Waer along with their families under a deal granting them safe passage to opposition-held territory elsewhere in the country.More than 320,000 people have been killed in Syria since the conflict erupted in March 2011 with anti-government demonstrations.

North Korea blasts US strikes on Syria, says justify nukes: state media-[AFP]-YAHOONEWS-April 8, 2017

Seoul (AFP) - North Korea has said the US missile strikes on Syria were an "intolerable act of aggression" that "proves a million times over" that strengthening its nuclear programme was the right choice, state media reported Saturday. The comments were Pyongyang's first since US President Donald Trump ordered the strikes on an air base in the war-wracked country Thursday in retaliation for an apparent chemical attack."The US missile attack against Syria is a clear and intolerable act of aggression against a sovereign state and we strongly condemn it," KCNA news agency quoted an unnamed spokesman for the North Korean foreign ministry as saying."The reality of today shows that we must stand against power with power and it proves a million times over that our decision to strengthen our nuclear deterrence has been the right choice."Analysts had earlier said the strikes contained a clear message for Pyongyang that the US was not afraid to exercise the military option, and there had been speculation as to how the North would respond.Trump has recently threatened unilateral action against Pyongyang if Beijing fails to help curb its neighbour's nuclear weapons programme. However, Pyongyang's response suggested the reclusive state was determined to continue with its nuclear weapons programme."Swaggering as a superpower, the US has been picking only on countries without nuclear weapons and the Trump administration is no exception," the foreign ministry spokesman said, according to KCNA."The Syria attack thoroughly reminds us the fact that it is absolutely dangerous to have any illusions about imperialism and only military power of our own will protect us from imperialistic aggression," he added."We will keep bolstering our self-defensive military might in various ways in order to cope with the ever-intensifying US acts of aggression."The North has carried out five nuclear tests -- two of them last year -- and expert satellite imagery analysis suggests it could well be preparing for a sixth.Pyongyang has shown no sign of reining in a missile testing programme ultimately aimed at securing the capability to deliver a nuclear warhead to the continental United States.

Iran's Rouhani wants chemical attack in Syria investigated-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-April 8, 2017

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iranian President Hassan Rouhani called on Saturday for an impartial probe of this week's suspected chemical weapons attack in Syria and warned that U.S. missile strikes in response risked escalating extremism in the region.Washington accused the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad of the attack and on Friday launched cruise missiles at a Syrian airbase that the Pentagon said was involved."We are asking for an impartial international fact-finding body to be set up... to find out where these chemical weapons came from," Iran's Rouhani said in a speech on Saturday.Tehran is Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's main regional ally and has provided military and economic support for his fight against rebel groups and Islamic State militants. While the Syrian opposition applauded the U.S. cruise missile attack on the airbase near Homs, it said it should not be a one-off and was not enough on its own to stop government warplanes from hitting rebel-held areas. However, in a tweet about the missile strikes, Rouhani said: "I call on the world to reject such policies, which bring only destruction and danger to the region and the globe.""U.S. aggression against Shayrat (airbase) strengthens regional extremism and terror, and global lawlessness and instability, and must be condemned," Rouhani said. The heads of the general staffs of Iran and Russia, a close ally of Assad, spoke by telephone on Saturday and condemned the U.S. strikes as "blatant aggression ... aimed at slowing a trend of victories by Syria's army and its allies and boosting the terrorists' morale", Iran's state news agency IRNA said.Iran's Mohammad Baqeri and Russia's Valery Gerasimov "stressed that the two countries would continue their cooperation with the Syrian government until the full defeat of the terrorists and their backers in the country", IRNA added.North Korea weighed in on Saturday, calling the U.S. strikes "an unforgivable act of aggression" that showed its own decision to develop nuclear weapons was "the right choice a million times over".Diplomatically isolated North Korea considers Syria a key ally.-TILLERSON TO MOSCOW-Russia had said on Friday that the U.S. attack could have "extremely serious" consequences, and Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said the U.S. strikes were one step away from a clash with Russia's military.U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is expected to visit Moscow next week, and the Russian Foreign Ministry has said it expected him to explain Washington's stance in light of the U.S. missile strikes on Syria.Russia's defense ministry said on Saturday the United States had not provided any evidence of the presence of chemical weapons on the airbase it had attacked.A mission of professional experts should be sent to the airbase to obtain objective evidence, Interfax cited Igor Konashenkov, the defense ministry's spokesman, as saying.U.S. officials informed Russian forces ahead of the missile strikes on and avoided hitting Russian personnel. Satellite imagery suggests the base that was attacked houses Russian special forces and helicopters, part of Kremlin efforts to help Assad fight Islamic State and other militant groups.Britain's foreign minister Boris Johnson had been due to visit Moscow on Monday but said on Saturday that he had canceled his trip after developments in Syria."My priority is now to continue contact with the U.S. and others in the run-up to the G7 meeting on 10-11 April - to build coordinated international support for a ceasefire on the ground and an intensified political process," Johnson said.(Reporting by Dubai newsroom; Editing by Alexander Smith and Hugh Lawson)

Manitoba municipalities are preparing temporary flood-protection measures to meet an increase in flowing water on the lower Assiniboine River.Doug McMahon, assistant deputy minister of Manitoba Infrastructure, said the Assiniboine River forecast has been revised and the flow downstream of the diversion will reach 15,000 cubic feet per second as early as April 10 — a flow assistant deputy minister of emergency measures Lee Spencer said is within the threshold the river can sustain.Even so, "the Assiniboine and areas in the west and south are now being closely watched," McMahon said.A flood watch remains in place for the area between Portage la Prairie and Headingley as flows increase. But as flows on the Assiniboine increase, flows on the Red River are dropping."Levels continue to decline on the Red River and most of its tributaries," McMahon said.By Friday morning, levels had dropped to 18.2 feet above normal winter ice levels at James Avenue in Winnipeg and were expected to remain around that level for the next week.A flood watch is still in effect for the Red Deer River but has been lifted for Plum Creek.A flood warning is in effect for the Birdtail Creek; the upper Assiniboine River from the Shellmouth Dam to Holland; the Pelican, Rock, Oak and Dauphin lakes; and the Pembina and Souris rivers.Crews are watching the Gretna dike for potential overflows. Owners of property around Pelican Lake are also being encouraged to set up flood protection. There is also a flood warning in effect for all points along the Souris River."Due to the unusually warm temperatures this year, the spring run-off was typically two weeks earlier than usual and the run-off rates were exceptionally high," said McMahon.Ice jamming also caused major issues and "some bridges have been severely damaged," he added. Most rivers in southern Manitoba are now ice free, he said, but ice is still in place in the north and ice jamming is still a concern."Run-off is starting to occur on the Saskatchewan River and the Carrot River watersheds. We will be watching those closely," McMahon said.As of Friday morning, there were 15 local states of emergency, mostly in the southwest part of the province and the Red River and Pembina River areas.Spencer said most communities declared their states of emergency to allow the use of certain powers like going onto private property, rather than in response to significant damages."[I] think those that are in a state of emergency will say that they are busy and they need it," he said.So far, 291 people have been forced by flooding to leave their homes. All but six of those people are from First Nations, and they are staying in hotels in Brandon, Portage la Prairie and Winnipeg.

Flood watch continues for much of southern Quebec-[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-April 8, 2017

Water levels for several rivers in southern Quebec have stabilized, but a flood-watch continues after more than 78 homes were evacuated in the the lower Laurentians on Friday.A combination of heavy rain and snow-melt over the last few days led to floods in the Sainte-Thérèse, Blainville and Rosemère areas as parts of the Mille-Iles and des Prairies rivers overflowed. The Chaudière River in Beauceville, south of Quebec City, also spilled its banks Friday night.Meanwhile, water levels of the Rivière aux Chiens, on the northern shore of Montreal, have started to return to normal and the focus there has turned to clean-up.The situation in Estrie and the Montérégie has stabilized as well. The provincial government is stepping in to help residents, with Quebec Public Safety Minister Martin Coiteux saying that those affected by the flooding would be entitled to aid programs."I would like to let affected residents know that the government of Quebec has programs that exist to help them," Coiteux said in Sainte-Thérèse on Friday.

Above normal rainfall causes flooding around Ottawa-[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-April 8, 2017

Water levels in areas south of Ottawa are now so high that some residents can't get to their cottages and homes. On Friday, the only road leading into the tiny community of Hilly Lane was completely under water. Residents with off-road style vehicles were still able to navigate the washed out lane into the community. Most others had to park their cars on the side of Rideau River Road and use hip waders to reach their homes and cottages. The community was also hit by flooding in 2011 and 2014.Just down the road from Hilly Lane, the long driveway leading into Rosewood Stable is also under water. The owner of the stable, Marie Bastien, said there are ten horses at the stable."We normally get some flooding but not to this degree," she said.Bastien said she is still able to get in and out of the stable in her large pick-up truck, but for most others the driveway is impassible. She says it's fortunate that she doesn't teach riding lessons on the weekend."If it keeps raining I'll be concerned," she added. The latest statement from the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority says above normal rainfall is causing high water throughout the Rideau Watershed. Water levels this high were last seen in 2014, according to the agency. It adds that the worst flooding is in North Grenville and rural Ottawa near the confluence of Kemptville Creek and the Rideau River.Plenty of  farmer's fields  under water. On Friday, Chris Sargent feared water from a farmer's field was about to wash out a section of Rideau Valley Drive North, about two-and-a-half kilometres south of Manotick."To me that was an emergency," he said. The retired public servant says the farmer's field next to the road was dry on Thursday. Now, it looks like a lake. He said the road was in danger of being washed out because a culvert stopped draining water from the field."The force of the water pushed the culvert right up into the air so one of the culvert was touching the water, it was above the water level. So then the road acts as a dam and it was just daming up."Sargent, who has lived in the area for twenty year, said he called the city and was told it was monitoring the situation. He suggested it needed more than monitoring so a crew came and pushed the culvert back down so the water could flow through it again."I've never seen this, I've never seen anything like this," he said. Some roads in Prescott and Russell closed-Meanwhile, residents and officials are also reporting rising water levels east of Ottawa. County Road 9 north of St. Isidore washed out after this week's rain. A detour in place for drivers.Officials from Stormont, Dundas and Glengary are monitoring water levels in the area and are asking residents to use caution.

Atlanta storm halts thousands of Delta Air flights-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-April 7, 2017

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Delta Air Lines Inc said it had canceled nearly 3,000 flights this week after a severe storm hit its hometown of Atlanta, Georgia and apologized for its response to the "unprecedented" weather. On Friday alone, the No. 2 U.S. airline by passenger traffic canceled 493 flights by the afternoon, according to flight tracking website FlightAware.com, severely affecting routes in and out of its Atlanta hub.The storm ravaged much of the city on Wednesday, dumping several inches of rain and leaving behind damaged property and downed trees, according to local media reports.Delta Chief Operating Officer Gil West on Thursday apologized for the airline's performance in the wake of the storm, saying that its "recovery has not been ideal.""When Delta doesn’t fly aircraft, not only do customers not get to their destination, but flight crews don’t get to where they are scheduled to be. When this happens, unfortunately, further delays and cancellations result," West said in a statement.(Reporting by Alana Wise; Editing by Andrew Hay)

Warplanes strike Syrian town hit by chemical attack-[The Canadian Press]-yahoonews-April 8, 2017

BEIRUT — Warplanes on Saturday struck the Syrian town where a chemical attack had killed scores of people earlier this week, as Turkey warned that a retaliatory U.S. missile strike on a Syrian air base would only be "cosmetic" if greater efforts are not made to remove President Bashar Assad from power. The airstrikes on the opposition-held northern town of Khan Sheikhoun, where 87 people were killed in the chemical attack earlier this week, killed a woman and wounded her son, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Local Coordination Committees, an activist collective.Elsewhere in Syria, U.S.-led airstrikes killed at least 21 people, including a woman and her six children who were fleeing on a boat across the Euphrates River near the Islamic State group's self-styled capital, Raqqa, the target of a major offensive by U.S.-backed and Kurdish-led Syrian forces, activists said.An airstrike on a rebel-held town in the northern Idlib province killed at least 18 people, including women and children, according to the Observatory and Ariha Today, an activist group. It was not immediately clear who carried out the strike.Near the central city of Homs, a bomb exploded aboard a bus carrying workers, killing a woman and wounding more than 20, according to state TV and the Observatory. The chemical attack prompted the U.S. to launch nearly 60 Tomahawk missiles on a Syrian air base early Friday, which killed nine people and marked the first time Washington has directly targeted Syrian government forces since the war began in 2011.The move was welcomed by the Syrian opposition and its main backers, including Turkey and Saudi Arabia, but harshly condemned by Russia and Iran, who back Assad and said striking his forces would complicate the struggle against extremist groups.Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said the U.S. strike should be the start of a renewed effort to end the civil war, which has killed an estimated 400,000 people and displaced half of Syria's population."If this intervention is limited only to an air base, if it does not continue and if we don't remove the regime from heading Syria, then this would remain a cosmetic intervention," he said.He said the best outcome would be a peace agreement that leads to a transitional government accepted by all Syrians, followed by elections in which all Syrians, including those living abroad, could vote for new leadership. For that to happen, he said, "this oppressive Assad needs to go."Iran, which has provided crucial military and political support to Assad, meanwhile called for a fact-finding mission to determine what caused the chemical attack in Khan Sheikhoun. State television quoted Iranian President Hassan Rouhani as saying the committee should be impartial and "must not be headed by Americans."Rouhani said "neutral countries should come and assess to make it clear where the chemical weapons came from."Syria's government has denied carrying out any chemical attack, and Russia's Defence Ministry said the toxic agents were released when a Syrian airstrike hit a rebel chemical weapons arsenal and munitions factory.British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson cancelled a planned trip to Russia because of fast-moving events in Syria. Johnson said the situation in Syria has changed "fundamentally" following the chemical attack and the U.S. response.Johnson condemned Russia's continued defence of Assad "even after the chemical weapons attack on innocent civilians."He had planned to travel to Russia Monday on a trip intended to start a fresh dialogue with Moscow.U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson meanwhile plans to meet with G-7 foreign ministers in Europe next week before going on to Moscow. Johnson said Tillerson will be able to give a "clear and co-ordinated message to the Russians."In Damascus, dozens of Syrian students gathered outside the offices of the United Nations to protest the U.S. missile attack, chanting "Death to America" and "Death to Israel."University student Ashraf Fadel said he came to denounce "the unjust American aggression against Syria." He added that the United Nations was "created to support America instead of serving the wronged people."In a separate development, activists opposed to the Islamic State group said a U.S.-led coalition airstrike hit a boat carrying civilians fleeing across the Euphrates River. The groups Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently and Sound and Picture said the attack killed a woman and her six children. The attack occurred in the Shuaib al-Zeker area, near where U.S.-backed Syrian fighters have been battling IS under the cover of coalition airstrikes.Activists and state media said a separate airstrike by the U.S.-led coalition on the northern IS-held village of Hneida killed at least 14 civilians, including children. The Observatory said 15 people, including four children, were killed in the airstrike. The Sound and Picture group said the airstrike hit an internet cafe, killing 14 people. In Saudi Arabia, the official Saudi Press Agency reported that U.S. President Donald Trump has spoken by telephone with King Salman about the U.S. missile strike on Syria. The news agency reported that during the Friday phone call, the Saudi monarch congratulated Trump for his "courageous decision."Saudi Arabia said the missile launch was the right response to "the crimes of this regime to its people in light of the failure of the international community to stop it."The kingdom is among the most vehement opponents of Assad and supports Sunni rebel groups fighting to oust him. The Sunni rulers of Saudi Arabia are in a power struggle for regional dominance with Iran's Shiite government.___Associated Press writers Aya Batrawy in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Zeynep Bilginsoy in Istanbul and Albert Aji in Damascus, Syria contributed to this report.Bassem Mroue, The Associated Press.

Truck attack angers Swedes, raises questions about policies-[The Canadian Press]-yahoonews-April 8, 2017

STOCKHOLM — One brutal attack by a man who drove a stolen truck into shoppers in Stockholm has brought Sweden's open-door immigration policies under increased scrutiny — and raised the question if Swedish society, considered democratic and egalitarian, has failed to integrate its newcomers. The suspect in Friday's attack, a 39-year-old native of Uzbekistan who has been arrested by police, had been on authorities' radar previously but they dismissed him as a "marginal character." It was unclear whether he was also a Swedish citizen or resident or even how long he'd been in the country. The attack killed four people and wounded 15. In response, hundreds gathered Saturday at the site of the crash in the Swedish capital, building a heartbreaking wall of flowers on the aluminum fence put up to keep them away from the site's broken glass and twisted metal. Some hugged police officers nearby."We have been too liberal to take in people who perhaps we thought would have good minds. But we are too good-hearted," said Stockholm resident Ulov Ekdahl, a 67-year-old commercial broker who went to the memorial.Joachim Kemiri, who was born in Sweden to a Tunisian father and a Swedish mother, says migrants and refugees had been arriving in too large numbers."Too many of them have been coming in too fast," the 29-year-old railway worker said. "It's too much."Sweden has long been known for its open-door policy toward migrants and refugees. But after the Scandinavian country of 10 million took in a record 163,000 refugees in 2015 — the highest per-capita rate in Europe — Prime Minister Stefan Lofven conceded it could no longer cope with the influx. At a press conference in late 2015, deputy prime minister of the small Greens Party — a junior government partner — Asa Romson, broke into tears as she announced measures to deter asylum-seekers in a reversal of Sweden's welcoming policy toward people fleeing war and persecution. She described it as "a terrible decision," admitting the proposals would make life even more precarious for refugees. On Saturday, Lofven laid flowers at the truck crash site, declaring Monday a national day of mourning, with a minute of silence at noon. He urged citizens to "get through this" and strolled through the streets of the capital to chat with them.No one has claimed responsibility for Friday's attack but Sweden's police chief said Saturday that authorities were confident they had detained the man who carried it out.Uzbekistan and other former Soviet Central Asian republics have long been a fertile recruiting ground for Islamic militant groups, notably the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, which formed in 1998. Originally allied with al-Qaeda, many of the group's fighters have switched to Islamic State group affiliation.Russian officials say the suicide bomber who attacked the St. Petersburg subway on April 3 was a native of Kyrgyzstan.Sweden's police chief Dan Eliason said officers found something in the stolen beer truck that "could be a bomb" or an incendiary device, but said they were still investigating.Although it was not clear how long the suspect had been in Sweden, the Scandinavian country prides itself on welcoming newcomers. Still, its open-door immigration policy and comparatively heterogeneous culture has led to frictions, sometimes urban unrest, especially in areas where many long-time immigrants feel disempowered. The populist, right-wing Sweden Democrats have tapped into a growing anti-immigrant sentiment. Mattias Karlsson, the party's parliamentary group leader, said Saturday that he feels "anger and sorrow but not shock" over Friday's attack."Unfortunately, there have been clear signs that it was just a question of time before the next attack would hit Sweden," he said. "It will have far-reaching implications for society and politics."Steve Eklund, an office worker a few blocks away from where the accident occurred, said Sweden's immigration policy had gone wrong."Sweden has made some mistakes, and something needs to be done to assimilate the immigrants better," Eklund said. "But it takes two to tango — the immigrants living here need to reach out to ethnic Swedes too."Not everyone agreed. Visiting the crash site, Sweden's Crown Princess Victoria laid roses on the ground Saturday and wiped away a tear."We must show a huge force, we must go against this," she told reporters. "Swedish society is built on huge confidence, a sense of community."Joachim Lindstrom said he wasn't surprised by the attack."I don't think that Sweden has really failed in its efforts to assimilate newcomers," he told The Associated Press. "We have had long experience with them, but much depends on the people themselves."In February, U.S. President Donald Trump shocked Swedes when he suggested that Sweden could be the next European country to suffer the kind of extremist attacks that have hit France, Belgium and Germany.Friday's attack was the latest in which drivers have used vehicles as weapons. In an attack last month claimed by the Islamic State group, a man drove a rented SUV into a crowd in London, killing four people and injuring many others before stabbing a policeman to death. He was killed by police. The IS also claimed responsibility for a truck attack that killed 86 people in Nice, France, in July 2016 during a Bastille Day festival, as well as another truck attack that killed 12 people at a Christmas market last year in Berlin.Friday's truck attack on Stockholm's pedestrian shopping street of Drottninggatan was also near the site of a December 2010 attack in which Taimour Abdulwahab, a Swedish citizen, detonated a suicide bomb, killing himself and injuring two others. The prime minister made a point Saturday of walking around Stockholm, including along Drottninggatan, chatting with people having coffee outside a cafe. He said the aim of terrorism is to undermine democracy."But such a goal will never be achieved in Sweden," Lofven said.Others feared the deadly attacks could continue."Things like this will always happen in an open society. Sweden is not a totalitarian society," Eklund said. "Maniacs can't be stopped."___Pietro DeCristofaro in Stockholm and Jan M. Suspect in Russia metro bombing travelled to Turkey, say co-workers-[Reuters]-By Polina Nikolskaya and Hulkar Isamova-YAHOONEWS-April 8, 2017

ST PETERSBURG, Russia/OSH, Kyrgyzstan (Reuters) - The man Russian police believe was the suicide bomber who killed 14 people in a blast on the St Petersburg metro this week developed an interest in Islam and soon after travelled to Turkey, two people who know him told Reuters. The two people said they did not know for sure if the man, Akbarzhon Jalilov, went on from Turkey to neighbouring Syria. Turkey has been routinely used by radical Islamists as a route into areas of Syria controlled by the Islamic State group. If Jalilov had been in Syria, that would expose a major gap in Russia's counter-terrorism procedures, which rely heavily on identifying anyone who has been with militants in Syria and stopping them from returning to Russia, or arresting them. The metro blast happened on Monday afternoon just as Russian President Vladimir Putin visited St Petersburg. No group has claimed responsibility. But Islamic State has threatened acts of violence on Russian soil in reprisal for the Kremlin's military intervention in Syria in support of President Bashar al-Assad.Jalilov, the suspected suicide bomber, was born in 1995 and grew up in the city of Osh in Kyrgyzstan, a mainly Muslim ex-Soviet Republic in Central Asia.Around 2011 he moved to St Petersburg. He worked in low-paid jobs for several years. Photographs posted on social media showed a stylishly dressed young man. His online posts offered no hint of any ties to Islamist militants. But there is a gap in Jalilov's biography from the end of 2015 until the start of this year. During that period several acquaintances said he disappeared from view.He reappeared when he visited Osh in February this year. In March he returned to St Petersburg and rented an apartment from where he set off on the day of the bombing carrying a rucksack and a bag.By speaking to several people who knew Jalilov well, Reuters has been able to piece together a picture of his life in the missing years.-FINDING RELIGION-According to someone from Osh who worked as a cook alongside Jalilov in a St Petersburg restaurant in 2014, he was an even-tempered young man who did not drink or use swear words."I would have said firmly that Akbar was not capable of doing anything bad," said the source, using an abbreviation of Jalilov's name. The source asked not to be identified because he did not want the authorities to associate him with a suicide bomber. The two worked in the same outlet of the Sushi Wok restaurant chain.During the course of 2014, said the former work colleague, Jalilov developed an interest in Islam. He prayed, went to the mosque, read the Koran, and started growing a beard. But the source said he did not notice any signs of extremism. The second source, another native of Osh who also worked with Jalilov in St Petersburg, said he too was aware that Jalilov had acquired an interest in religion. But he said Jalilov never tried to push his faith onto anyone else.During 2015, said the first source, Jalilov left St Petersburg. The source said he heard from other cooks at the restaurant that before leaving, Jalilov had said he was going to Turkey. He said, according to the source, that "there are good jobs in Turkey, and things aren't working out (with work) in St Petersburg."The second source, who also did not want to be identified, told Reuters he knew from Jalilov that he went to Turkey. The source said Jalilov had travelled there in November 2015, to join his uncle who was living in the Turkish region of Antalya.Contacted by Reuters in Osh, Jalilov's uncle, Khasan Kuchkarov, told Reuters he had lived in Antalya but left in September 2015 and was unaware of Jalilov travelling there. After Jalilov's departure from St Petersburg, there was talk among his old work colleagues, and among people who knew him back in Osh, that he had gone to Syria, both of the sources said. But neither of them knew for sure if he was in Syria, they said.Officials in Russia's Investigative Committee, the state body investigating the metro bombing, and in the Federal Security Service, declined to comment on whether Jalilov travelled to Turkey or Syria.-APARTMENT SUSPECTS-Russian law enforcement agencies have arrested eight people on suspicion of involvement in the metro bombing. Six were detained at an apartment on Tovarishcheskii Avenue in a residential suburb of St Petersburg, and two in Moscow. In the apartment, law enforcement officers found an explosive device identical to one which, police say, Jalilov had left at a metro station before going on to blow up the carriage in another part of the subway system. The device he left, hidden inside a fire extinguisher, did not go off.At a court arraignment hearing on Friday, only one of the detainees, Ibrahibzhon Ermatov, 24, said he knew Jalilov. He said they had worked together in a Sushi Wok branch in Vsevolozhsk, a town near St Petersburg. Ermatov denied being a supporter of Islamic State. The first of the two sources who knew Jalilov said the apartment on Tovarishcheskii Street was used by some people as a temporary stopping off point for workers arriving in St Petersburg from Osh.He said new arrivals found out about the 32 square-metre apartment via friends, and there was a regular turnover of tenants. Neighbours confirmed that to Reuters. The source said he had once stayed there himself for a day before moving on to longer-term accommodation. The source said Jalilov had not stayed at the apartment, to his knowledge. He said he knew one of the apartment tenants who had been arrested, Dilmurod Muildimov, from back home in Osh. Muildimov also worked for the Sushi Wok restaurant chain. The source said Muildimov had arrived in St Petersburg a few months ago, and that he did not know Jalilov.(Additional reporting by Maria Tsvetkova, Svetlana Reiter and Denis Pinchuk in MOSCOW, and Olzhas Auyezov in ALMATY; Writing by Christian Lowe; Editing by Hugh Lawson)

EU starts border checks on everyone By Nikolaj Nielsen-euobserver

BRUSSELS, 7. Apr, 09:29-National authorities will start imposing identity checks as of Friday (7 April) on everyone entering and leaving the European Union. The move is part of a broader security crackdown, which follows a series of terror attacks in Paris and Brussels involving EU nationals that had fought alongside militant extremists in Syria and elsewhere."We still have a stock of 2,500 Europeans who are on the ground [Syria and Iraq] and we don't know how many, at what rhythm, and on which routes they will return here," the EU's counter terror coordinator, Gilles de Kerchove, told Belgian radio last month.Anyone who flies in, or crosses a land or sea border will have their identities cross-checked with the Schengen Information System (SIS), and Interpol's database of lost travel documents (SLTD).The checks, which were already being imposed on non-EU nationals, will now also extend to EU citizens.Authorities will be able to relax some of the border control checks in case of heavy traffic flows. A transitional period has also been imposed for airports.SIS is the most widely-used information system for law enforcement in Europe and is undergoing reforms.A new alert category for "unknown wanted persons" will be included. Alerts will also be issued on terrorist offences and on anyone that has an entry ban.Plans are also underway to include an automated fingerprint identification service that would allow border guards to one day search SIS using fingerprints.Julian King, the EU commissioner for security, told MEPs in March that the fingerprint system is needed to catch people who use fake IDs.SIS has been touted as the biggest and most successful EU-wide security database, with hits increasing from around 150,000 in 2015 to more than 200,000 last year.Authorities had queried the database almost 4 billion times in 2016, a 40 percent increase from 2015.

Apr, 16:24-Eurozone finance ministers swapped Brussels' brand new Europa building for old Valletta's Grand Master's Palace, but they came out on Friday (7 April) with the usual optimistic line about Greece."We have achieved significant progress since the last meeting," Eurogroup president Jeroen Dijsselbloem said at a press conference after a meeting in Malta's capital. After months of delays and weeks of difficult talks, ministers endorsed an agreement between Greece and its creditors - the European Commission, the European Central Bank, the European Stability Mechanism, and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).But the agreement will only allow experts from the creditor institutions to go back to Athens and try to reach a so-called staff-level agreement on reforms to be made by the Greek government. The reforms are needed to conclude the second review of the bailout programme that was launched in 2015, and to allow the disbursement of a new tranche of financial aid.In order to close the review, the Eurogroup will however need to agree on additional issues - Greece's fiscal targets for few first years following the end of the programme in 2018, and the sustainability of Greek debts."We have an agreement on the overarching elements of policy in terms of size, timing and sequencing of the reforms," Dijsselbloem said on Friday.-Reform package-He said that Greece and its creditors have agreed on the principle of a reform package, designed to cut spending by 2 percent of GDP.One percent will come from cuts in the highest pensions by 2019 and the other percent will mainly come from an increase in the income tax threshold.Details based on this agreement in principle will be discussed by the Greek government and the institutions' missions when it returns to Athens, most likely next week. A reform of the labour market is also still on the table. To compensate for the effect of these austerity measures, the Greek government will be able to pass "expansionary measures" that would be implemented "on the assumption that the economy is doing better and the fiscal path is doing better than expected," Dijsselbloem explained.Greek finance minister Euclid Tsakalotos told journalists that the measures will address social issues such as "child poverty, employment, housing, investment, or old age pensioners' contributions to medical costs".The spending-cut reforms required by creditors and the measures requested by the Greek government to help people most hit by the crisis will be tabled at the same time in the Greek parliament, and will have to be adopted before the Eurogroup closes the review.-Helping Greece-"This is a balanced agreement," EU finance commissioner Pierre Moscovici said at the press conference, adding that it would "help Greece get on its feet again"."The Greek people deserve the conclusion of the second review," he said. What Dijsselbloem called the "final stretch" before a deal and the disbursement of the next loan is likely to be difficult.Greece, its eurozone partners and the IMF will have to agree on the country's fiscal targets and future debt relief measures. They need to decide how many years Greece will require to reach a budget primary surplus - the budget surplus before debt payments - of 3.5 percent of GDP after 2018.The longer the target will be set - between three and five years, according to sources - the more Greece will have to maintain austerity measures. The decision also has an impact on the sustainability of the Greek debt, with the IMF insisting that it cannot stay in the bailout programme if the debt is unsustainable.-Jigsaw puzzle-"The whole agreement depends on all the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle," noted Tsakalotos. In a statement after Friday's Eurogroup, the Washington-based institution said that there were "good prospects for successfully concluding discussions on outstanding policy issues".It added that its eurozone partners will have to come up with "satisfactory assurances on a credible strategy to restore debt sustainability" before it can decide whether or not it will stay in the programme. The IMF says that the fiscal targets are too difficult to reach and that measures must be taken to reduce the weigh of the debt on the Greek economy. But the staunchest opponent of that position is Germany, which at the same time says that the bailout programme can only continue with the IMF."It is basically a discussion between Germany and the IMF," an EU official told EUobserver.A diplomat from a member state, also implicitly referring to Germany and the IMF, noted that part of the delay in recent talks was because "some want to talk about the debt as late as possible".All leaders in Malta pointed out that it was urgent to close the second review in order to dissipate uncertainties over the Greek economy, and also to avoid a crisis when Greece has to repay more than €7 billion in July."We need a deal very quickly," Tsakalotos insisted, adding that "very few actors want a new Greek crisis".

Ancient Rome treasures discovered during subway dig on show-[Associated Press]-YAHOONEWS-April 8, 2017

ROME (AP) — The long-delayed project to extend Rome's subway system has brought treasures of the past to the surface and allowed them to be showcased at one of the city's new subway stations.Rome city officials this week unveiled the Metro C archaeological exhibit, which features amphora, marble panels, coins and even peach pits dating back to the Roman era.The permanent exhibit will be on view as passengers descend into the three-story San Giovanni subway station, which is expected to open in 2018."For those who will use this metro — this station in particular — it's a full immersion into the history of Rome and of this site," said archaeologist Rossella Rea, who is in charge of the dig for the Italian government.Archaeologists said their surveys, which reached an unusually deep 20 meters (yards), indicated the site was once a huge farm. Peach pits, seashells and other organic remains have been found intact and are featured in the exhibit.Lines on the southeastern section of Metro C have been operational since 2015, while northern lines near the city center are still under construction. The project has been delayed for years by the repeated discovery of ancient underground treasures.

Liberals want to move up pot legalization to avoid Canada Day celebrations-[CBC]-yahoonews-April 8, 2017

With long-awaited marijuana legislation set to be announced next week, the federal government is having second thoughts about legalizing cannabis on Canada Day.The Trudeau government still plans to go ahead with its plan to make weed legal for recreational use. But a senior government source says the initial target of July 1, 2018 as the implementation date will be changed to "on or before July 1, 2018."The change reflects some internal concerns over legalizing a recreational drug on the country's birthday. Bill Blair, the Liberal government's point man on pot, told the Canadian Press he wanted the focus of Canada Day to be Canada — not cannabis."I'm probably out on a limb on this one but ... I don't believe July 1 should be an implementation date for anything; it is a day of celebration for the anniversary and founding of our country," Blair told CP."I don't think that's an appropriate date. That's my opinion."-By next summer-But what isn't changing is the federal government's desire to fully deliver on its marijuana legalization promise by next summer — despite suggestions that the timeline may be too ambitious. The federal government believes its timeline to have a nation-wide system for the distribution and sale of marijuana is achievable — even though much of the heavy lifting will have to be done by the provinces."We campaigned on this," said the senior government official. "We told them it was going to happen."It appears that Ottawa is counting on the potential profits from marijuana sales to speed things along at the provincial level. Colorado legalized marijuana in 2014 and, with a population smaller than Quebec and Ontario, that state is doing more than $1 billion US in legal sales a year. The hope is that at least a few of the provinces will move quickly to finalize their system for retail sales and that will have a pace-car effect for the slower moving jurisdictions.-Bill details coming next week-The marijuana legislation is set to be unveiled next week. But CBC News reported many of the details last month. It will broadly follow the recommendation of a federally appointed task force that was chaired by former liberal Justice Minister Anne McLellan. The federal government will be in charge of making sure the country's marijuana supply is safe and secure and Ottawa will license producers. But the provinces will have the right to decide how the marijuana is distributed and sold. Provincial governments will also have the right to set the price. While Ottawa will set a minimum age of 18 to buy marijuana, the provinces will have the option of setting a higher age limit if they wish.As for Canadians who want to grow their own marijuana, they will be limited to four plants per household.Legalizing marijuana was one of the more controversial promises Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made as he campaigned to become prime minister. In their platform the Liberals said it was necessary to "legalize, regulate and restrict access to marijuana" in order to keep drugs "out of the hands of children, and the profits out of the hands of criminals."The Liberals had promised to introduce legislation by the Spring of 2017. Announcing the legislation next week will allow the party to hit that deadline.

Alberta says growing number of fentanyl deaths, Liberals call for action-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-April 7, 2017

EDMONTON — The Alberta Liberals want the province to declare an emergency after a new report shows a growing number drug overdose deaths linked to fentanyl. The government report says 349 people died in the province last year from the street opioid painkiller. In the first six weeks of this year there were 51 deaths — almost twice the number during the same time last year.Liberal Leader David Swann says the numbers are very troubling because such deaths are preventable.Swann, a physician and former medical officer of health, says the Alberta government needs to do more to deal with the crisis. He says Alberta should have a mental health and addiction officer and develop a co-ordinated strategy to reduce such deaths."We need increased public education efforts and timelier access to harm reduction, including opiate replacement therapy and safe injection sites," he said Friday in a release."Once again, I urge this government to declare a state of emergency. Let's do everything in our power to get ahead of these deaths so that more lives are not lost with each new quarterly report."The Canadian Press.

No plagues here: 10 ways to celebrate Passover all week long-Beyond a new haggadah, we’ve got opera for young listeners, balloon sculpture and design inspiration-By Jessica Steinberg April 8, 2017, 7:57 pmTHE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Passover is almost here and the weather is turning milder, which means it’s time to go and see what’s going on in our cultural climes. From free days at museums to birding adventures and a northern sculpture festival, it’s a good opportunity to hit the road and have an adventure. And the best part is, there’s a lot that’s free or relatively inexpensive, so wrap up the matzah sandwiches and head on out. 1) If you’re going to be in Tel Aviv, check out the city’s public seders. A 16-year tradition, the various seders will host more than 3,000 participants, some for free, others for a nominal fee. Call 03-724-8682 for more information. 2) Once the seder is over, there are other options to explore in the Big Orange. The official beach season doesn’t open until April 27, when the lifeguards will return to their stations, but for now you can take a selfie in the giant frame recently erected on the Jaffa end of the boardwalk. 3) Take a look at some groundbreaking industrial design at an exhibit of works created by Holon Institute of Technology students, who are displaying their designs of household tools, toys and more whimsical concepts at Tel Aviv’s Hatachana shopping complex, throughout Passover. Entrance is free. 4) On the other end of the cultural spectrum is the Israeli Opera’s mornings of kid-friendly opera on Wednesday, April 12, through Friday, April 14, with two showings (10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.) of Mozart’s “Surprise Box” on Wednesday, April 12; two performances (10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.) of “Cinderella” on Thursday, April 13, and a 9:30 a.m. performance of “The Magic Flute” on Friday, April 14. Tickets cost NIS 35 per person (including children), and can be ordered at 03-692-7777 or at the Israeli Opera website. 5) If you’re not much of an opera fan, check out the aptly named Exodus, a day of world music performances, dance, workshops and vegan food at Tel Aviv’s Abraham Hostel. Friday, April 14, 12:30 pm, NIS 70 per ticket. 6) Wanna get moving and work off some of that matzah? Try the local version of the Legion Run, a challenging experience for all ages, with races and obstacle courses in 200 tons of mud. Israel’s Legion Run will take place on Friday, April 14, along the beach in Kiryat Yam. Costs are NIS 220 per person for the longer 5-kilometer runs, NIS 200 per two-person family team, and up to NIS 270 for a five-member family team. See the Legion Run site for more information and registration. 7) Before 35 Israeli museums and national sites offer free entry courtesy of Bank Hapoalim on April 12-16, head to the Israel Museum between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 9, to celebrate 100 years of Marcel Duchamp’s “Fountain,” the urinal he presented as an artwork in 1917, forever changing what was considered modern art. The Israel Museum is joining other museums around the world in marking the artist’s bold move, and only those who identify themselves as R. Mutt, the pseudonym Duchamp used back then, will be allowed to enter the museum without paying. If you don’t make it on April 9, just know that 35 museums are open to the public for free from April 12-16, with a list available online. 8) Go north for the Ma’alot Tarshiha sculpture festival, April 12-14, where sculptors from different countries are at work by the town’s Monfort Lake for this annual festival. Entrance to the lake to watch the artists and then see their works is free, although there are many other activities, including boating, ice skating, camping, horseback riding and tours of the town. Dutch balloon installation artist Guido Verhoef will be at the festival, making a fantastical creation out of 30,000 balloons. 9) Need some nature? Head to the Jerusalem Bird Observatory behind the Knesset in Jerusalem, where nearly every day of Passover offers another birding activity. Visitors can watch and learn about ringing birds every morning at 8:30 a.m., for free. There’s a night safari on April 13, at 6 p.m., which is an opportunity to watch local, night animals on their nocturnal wanderings. And follow the Knesset trail on April 14 and 16 at 10 a.m., a free tour about birds, Jerusalem history and nature. 10) Finally, if you need some Passover inspiration, here are two options. Some Passover designs from the Dov Abramson Studio used the Had Gadya song as inspiration for T-shirts and onesies, Passover cups, coasters, a domino game and magnets. Available online at Marmelada, Jerusalem’s Hansen House and through the Dov Abramson Studio. If you need a little more than that, try the Ayeka Haggadah, “Hearing Your Own Voice,” by Aryeh Ben David, the rabbi who founded Ayeka, a Jerusalem-based center for soulful education. The goal, writes Ben David, is to encourage each person at the seder table to use the seder to figure out where they are in the development of their own life, the life of their family, and the life of the Jewish people. With 40 questions posed by Rabbi Ben David, it’s certainly one way of putting oneself into the Israelites’ sandals. To purchase, email tal@ayeka.org.il to arrange a pick-up option.Happy Passover.

Protesting US airstrikes, Syrians chant ‘death to Israel’-Pro-regime demonstrators at UN headquarters in Damascus decry ‘unjust American aggression,’ say world body was created to back American interests-By AP and Times of Israel staff April 8, 2017, 8:46 pm

BEIRUT, Lebanon — Dozens of Syrian students on Saturday gathered outside the offices of the United Nations in Damascus to protest a US missile attack on an air base. The protesters held banners and chanted “Death to America” and “Death to Israel.”One of the banners they carried read: “The Iraqi scenario will not be repeated in Syria.” They were referring to the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq after Washington accused Saddam Hussein of hiding weapons of mass destruction — a belief that later turned out to be incorrect.University student Ashraf Fadel said he came to denounce “the unjust American aggression against Syria.” He added that the UN was “created to support America instead of serving the wronged people.”Tensions skyrocketed this week after an alleged chemical weapons attack by the Syrian government killed dozens of people.protest organized Syrians in front of the United Nations building in the capital Damascus, condemning the American aggression on #Alshaerat pic.twitter.com/xK802YqZ8s— Hamza sulyman (@hamza_780) April 8, 2017-The US responded early Friday by launching 59 Tomahawk missiles at a Syrian air base, a dramatic escalation lauded by Sunni states, rebels and Israel but condemned by Russia, China and Syrian President Bashar Assad.Ordered by US President Donald Trump, the strike came as retaliation for the deadly chemical weapons attack last week in the northern Syrian province of Idlib that left at least 86 people dead, including 27 children, and allegedly employed the nerve agent sarin. Footage of people and children choking on the gas prompted outrage across the globe. The US and other Western powers have blamed the Assad regime for the attack, but Damascus has denied it used chemical weapons. In a statement released about three hours after the US strike, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the American move, as did Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman and the Israeli military. The Israel Defense Forces said Friday it was informed by the US ahead of the military strike and that it expressed its support for the operation during the talks.Later, the Prime Minister’s Office said US Vice President Mike Pence called Netanyahu and “thanked him – on behalf of US President Donald Trump – for Israel’s strong support for the American action in Syria.”Pence also updated Netanyahu “on the details of the action and its results,” the statement said, adding that the prime minister “reiterated the need to prevent the spread and use of chemical weapons.”The vice president and the prime minister also “emphasized the strength of the alliance between Israel and the US.”Israel has largely stayed out of the fighting in Syria, which has some 400,000 lives. But over the past year, Israel has carried out numerous airstrikes on Syrian territory, most of which were reportedly targeting Hezbollah weapons convoys. In April 2016, Netanyahu admitted for the first time that Israel had attacked dozens of convoys transporting weapons in Syria destined for the Lebanon-based terror group, which fought a 2006 war with Israel and is now battling alongside the Damascus regime.

UN Mideast envoy urges Palestinian unity amid Gaza pay cut protests-Nickolay Mladenov calls on Hamas to allow the PA to resume governance over the coastal territory-By Times of Israel staff April 8, 2017, 8:07 pm

The United Nations envoy for the Middle East on Saturday called for Palestinian political unity amid fresh protests against civil service pay cuts in the Gaza Strip. In a statement, Nickolay Mladenov expressed “deep concern by the growing tensions” in the Palestinian territory, and called on the Hamas leadership to allow its West Bank-based rival government, the Palestinian Authority, to “assume its responsibility in Gaza.”“I am deeply concerned by the growing tensions in Gaza,” he said. “While the Palestinian Government needs to ensure its fiscal sustainability under increasingly difficult economic conditions, it is important that reforms or decisions to reduce expenditures are fairly distributed and made with consideration to the harsh conditions under which people in Gaza live.”Mladenov said Gaza is “an integral part of the future Palestinian state and no efforts should be spared to bring about real national reconciliation that ends the division.”“I urge the responsible parties to work together to find a solution to the current crisis and call on all factions to allow the Palestinian Government to assume its responsibility in Gaza,” the UN envoy said.“Leaders have a responsibility to avoid escalation and bridge the growing divide between Gaza and the West Bank that further fragments the Palestinian people,” his statement added.Mladenov’s statement was released as tens of thousands of Palestinians took to the streets of Gaza City to protest the recent salary cuts announced by the PA.The decision last week by Ramallah to impose pay cuts on its civil servants in the coastal territory has sparked anger among affected government employees. Demonstrators at Saturday’s protest, the largest since the 30 percent cut was announced, called on PA President Mahmoud Abbas to sack his government. The decision further deepened the divide between the West Bank and Gaza — two territories that the Palestinians hope to turn into an independent state — and increased hardship in already impoverished Gaza. The internationally backed PA, which controls the West Bank, ordered all of its roughly 50,000 workers to step down after the Islamic militant group Hamas seized power in 2007. But it has continued to pay the salaries of the former policemen, teachers and civil servants.Israel and Egypt have maintained a blockade over Gaza since Hamas, a militant group sworn to Israel’s destruction, took power. Israel says the measure, which has restricted the movement of people and goods in and out of Gaza, is needed to prevent Hamas from importing arms. But the blockade has hit Gaza’s economy hard, and unemployment is now over 40%, according to the World Bank. The faltering economy has remained afloat through sales of consumer goods. The PA employees have provided a large slice of the purchasing power that business owners rely on to keep their commerce alive.Hamas, which hired more than 40,000 people to fill the gaps left by the absence of the Palestinian Authority workers, also struggles to pay its employees. After repeated efforts to reconcile with Fatah failed, Hamas is increasingly relying on hefty taxes on imports, utility fees and customs to pay its employees just half of their regular salaries.Hamas condemned the PA salary reducations as “abusive and irresponsible,” while the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine terror group said they were “illegal and unacceptable,” according to Ma’an.On Friday, the Islamic Jihad terror group held a rally in the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis protesting the pay cuts, which demonstrators said were meant to “drown” the residents of Gaza, Ma’an reported.Agencies contributed to this report.

Islamic State brutally killing civilians who try to flee Mosul-As government troops advance on crumbling jihadist ‘caliphate,’ witnesses say dozens of residents executed, strung up from electricity poles-By Times of Israel staff and AFP April 8, 2017, 6:19 pm

Dozens of Iraqi civilians in Mosul have reportedly been brutally killed by the Islamic State in recent days, as government forces continue their offensive to retake the city from the jihadist group.According to Reuters, mutilated bodies of Mosul residents caught attempting to flee the city have strung up from electricity poles across the city which IS made its de facto Iraqi capital of their now crumbling “caliphate.”One man told the news agency that one of his relatives was among four Mosul residents who were hanged from an electricity pole in the city’s Tenek district for attempting to escape this week.“Their appearance was shocking. We weren’t able to get them down and they have been there for two days,” he told Reuters on condition of anonymity.According to the report, Kurdish security forces estimate that Islamic State militants have killed up to 140 Mosul residents this week-Another resident reported at least 40 fleeing civilians caught by IS have been killed in Mosul’s Old city, including children and elderly residents.“I fear those (families) who stayed in Daesh’s grip met a terrible fate,” said a woman from the Yarmouk District who narrowly managed to escape, referring to the group by their Arabic acronym.According to the United Nations, at least 307 Mosul residents have been killed between February 17 and March 22, a period which only covers the first weeks of the offensive on west Mosul but not the entire operation that started in mid-October last year. The fighting to retake what is now the last major IS stronghold in Iraq is taking its toll on civilians and the local residents working to get the war-torn city back on its feet.Pride and pain as Mosul doctors treat their own-Every time a patient is stretchered into the Athbah field hospital south of Mosul, doctor Sultan prays it isn’t his sister or brother. Most of the medical staff is from the war-torn Iraqi city and each one of the victims they treat could be a relative or a neighbor.“It’s very painful for us… Many people, many children, need amputations or will remain paralyzed,” he says from the small field hospital set up in Athbah, just a few miles south of Mosul.Sultan, who chose not divulge his full name, fled Mosul when IS still controlled Mosul. But his siblings are trapped inside, in neighborhoods of Mosul’s west bank still held by the jihadists despite almost six months of fighting by the security forces to retake the city.“I have no news,” he said. “Daesh (IS) uses civilians as human shields and many buildings have been leveled by air strikes. They might be lying under the rubble and I don’t know about it.”For now, the 43-year-old is treating a man in his forties with facial injuries.“He’s stable,” he says, after feeling the pulse in the patient’s bloodied wrist. In the same room, Faruq Abdulkader is treating a teenager who is writhing in pain but was relatively lucky: “The bullet went straight through the arm without touching the bone,” the doctor said, relieved. These doctors used to work in Mosul but fled the tyrannic rule of the jihadists. Now that regular forces are wresting back Iraq’s second city street by street, they are back to help. The Athbah field hospital opened on March 24 with support from the World Health Organization and the Iraqi health authorities.Abdulkader said most of the injuries they treated were caused by explosions but the hardest thing was often to witness the suffering of their own neighbours.“Some of them are our neighbors, coming from the same area where I was living in Mosul, and I’m so sad for them,” he said. The battle for Mosul has raged for nearly six months and supplies have dwindled sharply as Iraqi forces secured the city’s east bank and sealed their siege on the jihadists’ last redoubts on the west side.Basic goods have been unavailable for months and the little food that is left is either too expensive or hoarded by the jihadists.“Nearly all our patients suffer from malnutrition,” says Taryn Anderson, head nurse at the Athbah clinic. “We can’t call it a famine but it’s very alarming, especially for the children.”After examining the very weak patient who was just wheeled in, the doctors decide against a transfusion — the precious blood they do have will be saved for other patients with a real chance of survival.Ali Saad Abdulkhaled, a 26-year-old nurse who used to treat people in his home in east Mosul during the fighting there, said the number of wounded civilians was increasing sharply.“The west side is more densely populated, it’s the Old City,” he said. “The number of victims is huge. It’s best not to beat your wife, a recent Palestinian television show said, but if you absolutely have to, then follow the rules in the Quran.During an April 1 show, a female presenter urged male viewers who “had to” beat their wives, to do so in accordance with the Quran. While the female presenter did remind viewers there “are solutions before giving beatings,” the show titled “Talk of the Land” on official Palestinian Authority TV, did not categorically reject violence against women.“To those who use beatings and violence to solve their marital problems: Carefully read the Quranic verse again [Sura 4:34]. There are solutions before giving beatings,” the presenter said, according to a translation provided by Palestinian Media Watch.“If you have to, there are religious rules for beatings that must be obeyed. Guys, the goal of the beatings is rebuke in a way that does not cause injury. You can even go ask someone about it,” she said.Previous shows aired on Palestinian TV in the past have featured imams who have touted wife-beating as God’s solution for marital strife.

2 killed in clashes in Lebanese Palestinian refugee camp-Fighting erupts between Palestinian factions and Islamic extremists in Ein al-Hilweh over new security plan-By AFP April 8, 2017, 6:45 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

SIDON, Lebanon — Palestinian factions battled an extremist group in a refugee camp in southern Lebanon on Saturday in a second day of clashes that have killed at least two people, medics said. The clashes erupted on Friday night as a security force of leading Palestinian factions in the Ein al-Hilweh camp deployed under a new security plan, a source in the Palestinian Fatah faction said.“It came under fire from a neighborhood under the influence of extremist Islamist groups, which oppose the security plan of the factions and their deployment,” the source told AFP.Palestinian factions in the camp accused a small militant group linked to an extremist Islamist of firing on the security force after demanding that the deployment not extend to its area of influence.“The security force will be deployed throughout the camp to bring security to it, and there is no other solution,” Lebanon’s official National News Agency quoted a Fatah commander as saying.Medical sources told AFP that the clashes killed two people and wounded 21, with at least one member of the security force among the dead.An AFP correspondent on the outskirts of the camp said fighting was continuing on the narrow streets of its residential neighborhoods, with the sound of machinegun fire and rocket-propelled grenades audible in much of the surrounding city of Sidon.A resident of the camp’s Tireh district, where heavy clashes were ongoing, said the fighting had set at least seven houses alight and trapped dozens of families. The fighting prompted the Lebanese army to take security measures at the entrance of the camp, including shutting the highway next to it.And Lebanon’s health ministry announced it was evacuating patients from the Sidon governmental hospital adjacent to the camp and moving them to other facilities. An AFP photographer saw members of the Lebanese Red Cross wheeling a baby in an incubator on a stretcher from the hospital into the back of an ambulance for transfer.Ein al-Hilweh is home to multiple armed factions, and has been plagued by intermittent clashes between them as well as against smaller extremist groups. In February, fighting erupted after Fatah pulled out of a joint security committee, prompting clashes that lasted days and killed one person.By long-standing convention, Lebanon’s army does not enter Palestinian refugee camps, where security is managed by joint committees of Palestinian factions.Ain al-Hilweh is home to some 61,000 Palestinians, including 6,000 who have fled the war in Syria.

Analysis-In Israeli eyes, Trump’s Tomahawks correct the course of history-Surprise attack on Syrian base is welcomed in Jerusalem, which saw Obama’s failure to respond to Assad as emboldening Iran. But it also attests to US president’s unpredictability-By Raphael Ahren April 7, 2017, 10:58 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

From an Israeli perspective, US President Donald Trump corrected the course of history in ordering airstrikes against the Syrian regime late Thursday. The mere fact that the global superpower took action in the face of Bashar Assad’s use of chemical weapons against civilians — regardless of what military goals the operation accomplished — sends a powerful message that will reverberate beyond Syria, leaders and officials in Jerusalem said.“In both word and action, President Trump sent a strong and clear message today that the use and spread of chemical weapons will not be tolerated,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement backing the airstrikes on the regime-held Shayrat Airfield, north of Damascus. “Israel fully supports President Trump’s decision and hopes that this message of resolve in the face of the Assad regime’s horrific actions will resonate not only in Damascus, but in Tehran, Pyongyang and elsewhere.”Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman called the missile strike “an important, necessary and moral message by the free world, led by the United States,” that shows it “will not tolerate the war crimes of the horrific regime of Bashar Assad.”Chiming in, Intelligence Minister Yisrael Katz also praised the attack, delivered via some 60 Tomahawk missiles fired from two US destroyers in the Mediterranean Sea, as “an important step both morally and strategically and a clear signal to the axis led by Iran.”The Israel Defense Forces released its own statement, saying it, too, supported the cruise missile strike and had informed Washington of its backing.Israel’s security establishment was updated by the US ahead of the missile strike, officials said.In the eyes of Israeli security officials, Trump’s surprise resort to force stands in sharp contrast to the policies of former US president Barack Obama, who had declared the use of chemical weapons to be a “red line” but then did nothing when Assad crossed it in 2013, with chemical weapons strikes east and southwest of Damascus that killed 1,429 people, including 426 children.Had Obama sent just a single jet to Damascus to drop a bag of water on Assad’s palace, history would have taken a different course, a top security official said this week. It was the US failure to enforce its own red line, more than letting the horrendous war crime go unpunished, that emboldened not only Assad but also his allies in Tehran.Reassured that Obama was reluctant to use military force, the Iranians could drive a hard bargain in the nuclear talks that ended in the 2015 Vienna agreement, which Israel condemned as a historic mistake.Despite the former president’s repeated statement that “all options are on the table” if no deal was struck, once Obama had made plain his aversion to being bogged down in another Middle East military confrontation, the Iranian negotiators were reassured that he wanted a deal at all costs, and they succeeded in signing what some Israeli security officials termed a “dream deal” for Tehran.Indeed, Obama’s 2013 decision not to use military force against Assad’s regime despite its use of chemical weapons “was a pivotal moment for the entire region,” Chagai Tzuriel, the director-general of the Intelligence Ministry, told The Times of Israel last month. “This moment changed everything.”Israel would welcome a greater American involvement, Tzuriel said at the time, and Friday morning’s strike on the Shayrat airfield’s hangars, control tower and ammunition areas was indeed greeted enthusiastically by Israeli politicians across the political spectrum.Opposition leader Isaac Herzog said it sent a “right and correct” message to Assad; Yesh Atid leader MK Yair Lapid said: “better late than never.”Deputy Minister for Diplomacy Michael Oren hailed a “new sheriff’ in town, saying the attack “sends a message to the entire world that America’s back,” and that “our common enemies need to fear.”Former defense minister Moshe Ya’alon praised Trump for passing his first serious test by assuming “the important ethical role of a superpower, which the US had given up during the last years.”“[The Americans] are telling their allies in the Middle East, you are not alone,” added Yaakov Amidror, a former national security adviser, on Friday morning in a phone briefing organized by the Israel Project.Trump’s change of heart: ‘flexibility’ or unpredictability? Friday’s attack impressively shows that the US under Trump dropped his predecessor’s “leading from behind” policy and will not hesitate to use military force when it feels it is justified. That is certainly welcome news from an Israeli government perspective. But there are two other aspects Jerusalem needs to take into consideration. While possibly deterring Assad from further chemical weapons attacks, Trump’s Tomahawks created a new reality in a volatile war theater on Israel’s border that includes not only the Syrian army but also various rebel groups, Hezbollah, and the Russian army.At this point, no one knows how the various actors are going to respond to what Damascus condemned as an American “act of aggression” and Moscow called a violation of international law.Developments in the Syrian war theater are the most pressing concern of Israel’s security apparatus, Tzuriel, of the Intelligence Ministry, said last month.“Syria is the key arena, because it’s a microcosm of everything: world powers, such as Russia and the US; regional actors such as Iran and Turkey; and rival groups within the country, such as the Assad regime, the opposition, the Kurds and the Islamic State,” the former Mossad official added. “Whatever happens in Syria today will greatly impact the region, and beyond, for years to come.”Furthermore, Israeli policymakers should take note of the administration’s quick change of heart regarding Syria, which could translate into surprise moves on Israel. Just last week, US top diplomats indicated they were not keen on picking a fight with Assad.“You pick and choose your battles,” US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley said on March 30. “And when we’re looking at this it’s about changing up priorities and our priority is no longer to sit and focus on getting Assad out.”Few people imagined that one week later US aircraft would fire 59 precision-guided missiles at a Syrian regime air base. While Israeli officials in 2013 wanted to see Obama enforce his red line, Trump vocally called on the president not to attack Syria. Any such move is not in America’s strategic interest, the Manhattan real estate developer argued at the time.“I like to think of myself as a very flexible person. I don’t have to have one specific way, and if the world changes, I go the same way, I don’t change. Well, I do change and I am flexible, and I’m proud of that flexibility,” Trump said on Wednesday, adding that his “attitude toward Syria and Assad has changed very much.”It has been said many time that Trump is unpredictable. His decision to launch a surprise strike at Syria — a key ally of Russia, a country he was said to be close to — powerfully underlines this assessment. As the US administration forges ahead in its effort to solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, expecting goodwill gestures from both sides, Jerusalem might be well-advised to take note of the president’s “flexibility,” capacity for change, and willingness to make surprise moves.Judah Ari Gross contributed to this report.

FBI reviews handling of thousands of terrorism-related tips-Audit follows several cases of people who fell off the FBI radar, including Omar Mateen who killed 49 people at an Orlando nightclub-By Eric Tucker April 8, 2017, 7:44 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

WASHINGTON (AP) — The FBI has been reviewing the handling of thousands of terrorism-related tips and leads from the past three years to make sure they were properly investigated and no obvious red flags were missed, The Associated Press has learned. The review follows attacks by people who were once on the FBI’s radar but who have been accused in the past 12 months of massacring innocents in an Orlando, Florida, nightclub, injuring people on the streets of New York City, and gunning down travelers in a Florida airport. In each case, the suspects had been determined not to warrant continued law enforcement scrutiny months and sometimes years before the attacks. The internal audit, which has not been previously reported, began this year and is being conducted in FBI field offices across the country. A senior federal law enforcement official described the review as an effort to “err on the side of caution.”The audit is essentially a review of records to ensure proper FBI procedures were followed. It’s an acknowledgment of the challenge the FBI has faced, particularly in recent years, in predicting which of the tens of thousands of tips the bureau receives annually might materialize one day into a viable threat.Investigations that go dormant because of a lack of evidence can resurface instantly when a subject once under scrutiny commits violence or displays fresh signs of radicalization. FBI Director James Comey has said it’s like finding a needle in a haystack and determining which piece of hay may become a needle.Though there’s no indication of significant flaws in how terrorism inquiries are opened and closed, the review is a way for the FBI to “refine and adapt to the threat, and part of that is always making sure you cover your bases,” said the law enforcement official, who was not authorized to discuss the matter by name. The pace of the FBI’s counterterrorism work accelerated with the rise of the Islamic State group, which in 2014 declared the creation of its so-called caliphate in Syria and Iraq and has used sophisticated propaganda to lure disaffected Westerners to its cause. By the summer of 2015, Comey has said, the FBI was “strapped” in keeping tabs on the group’s American sympathizers and identifying those most inclined to commit violence.Social media outreach by IS has appealed to people not previously known to the FBI but also enticed some who once had been under scrutiny to get “back in the game,” said Seamus Hughes, deputy director of George Washington University’s Program on Extremism.“The fact that there was a physical location and a caliphate announced, it helped kind of drive folks back in when they might have drifted away,” Hughes said. The review covers inquiries the FBI internally classifies as “assessments” — the lowest level, least intrusive and most elementary stage of a terror-related inquiry — and is examining ones from the past three years to make sure all appropriate investigative avenues were followed, according to a former federal law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the process.Assessments are routinely opened upon a tip — whether from someone concerned about things such as activity in a neighbor’s garage, a co-worker’s comments or expressions of support for IS propaganda — and are catalogued by the FBI. The bureau receives tens of thousands of tips a year, and averages more than 10,000 assessments annually.FBI guidelines meant to balance national security with civil liberties protections impose restrictions on the steps agents may take during the assessment phase.Agents, for instance, may analyze information from government databases and open-source internet searches, and can conduct interviews. But they cannot turn to more intrusive techniques, such as requesting a wiretap or internet communications, without higher levels of approval and a more solid basis to suspect a crime or national security threat. The guidelines explicitly discourage open-ended inquiries and say assessments are designed to be “relatively short,” with a supervisor signing off on extension requests. Many assessments are closed within days or weeks when the FBI concludes there’s no criminal or national security threat, or basis for continued scrutiny. The system is meant to ensure that a person who has not broken the law does not remain under perpetual scrutiny on a mere hunch that a crime could eventually be committed. But on occasion, and within the past year, it’s also meant that people the FBI once looked at but did not find reason to arrest later went on to commit violence. In the case of Omar Mateen, that scrutiny was extensive, detailed and lengthy.Mateen, who shot and killed 49 people at an Orlando nightclub in June, was investigated for 10 months in 2013 and interviewed twice after a co-worker reported that Mateen had claimed connections to al-Qaida.As part of a preliminary investigation, agents recorded Mateen’s conversations and introduced him to confidential sources before closing the matter. That kind of investigation is more intensive than an assessment and permits a broader menu of tactics, but it also requires a stronger basis for suspicion. Mateen was questioned again in 2014 in a separate investigation into a suicide bomber acquaintance. Comey has said he has personally reviewed that inquiry’s handling and has concluded it was done well. The FBI in 2014 also opened an assessment on Ahmad Khan Rahimi, who last September was charged in bombings in Manhattan and New Jersey, after his father expressed concerns about his internet use and his associations. The FBI said it closed the review after checking databases and travel and finding nothing that merited continued investigation.Esteban Santiago, the man accused in the January shooting at the Fort Lauderdale, Florida, airport that killed five people, had also been looked at by the FBI. He had walked into the bureau’s office in Anchorage, Alaska, two months earlier and claimed his mind was being controlled by US intelligence officials. In that case, too, the FBI closed its assessment after interviewing family members and checking databases. Each act of violence has raised questions about whether the FBI missed signs or should have been more aggressive in its investigation. With thousands of assessments pouring in, those decisions aren’t easy.“If you’re looking at all the cases, if everything’s blinking red, you have to make a judgment call every time,” Hughes said.

Palm Sunday church bombings claimed by IS kill at least 44 in Egypt-[AFP]-Maram Mazen-YAHOONEWS-April 9, 2017

Tanta (Egypt) (AFP) - The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for bombing two Egyptian churches as worshippers gathered to mark Palm Sunday, killing at least 44 people in the deadliest attacks on the Coptic Christian minority in recent memory. The attacks followed a Cairo church bombing in December and came weeks before a planned visit by Catholic Pope Francis intended to show support for Egypt's Christian minority. The first bombing at the Mar Girgis church in Tanta city north of Cairo killed 27 people, the health ministry said."I just felt fire grabbing my face. I pushed my brother who was sitting next to me and then I heard people saying: 'explosion'," one of the wounded told state television.Emergency services had scrambled to the scene when another blast rocked Saint Mark's church in Alexandria where Coptic Pope Tawadros II had been leading a Palm Sunday service.Seventeen people including at least four police officers were killed in that attack, which the interior ministry said was caused by a suicide bomber who blew himself up when prevented from entering the church. The ministry said Tawadros was unharmed, and a church official said he left before the explosion. The private CBC Extra channel aired footage of the Alexandria blast, with CCTV showing what appeared to be the church entrance engulfed in flame and flying concrete moments after a guard turned away a man.Eyewitnesses said a police officer detected the bomber before he blew himself up.At least 78 people were wounded in Tanta and 40 in Alexandria, the health ministry said.A UN Security Council statement condemned the bombings as "heinous" and "cowardly".Egyptian officials denounced the violence as an attempt to sow divisions, and Francis sent his "deep condolences" to Tawadros.IS claimed two Egyptian suicide bombers carried out both attacks and threatened further attacks in a statement published on social media. After the bombings, President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi ordered military deployments to guard "vital and important infrastructure", his office said.State television reported that the interior minister sacked the provincial head of security and replaced him after the attack. On March 29, the Mar Girgis church's Facebook page said a "suspicious" device had been found outside the building that security services removed."I heard the blast and came running. I found people torn up... some people, only half of their bodies remained," Nabil Nader, who lives in front of the Tanta church, said Sunday.Worshippers had been celebrating Palm Sunday, one of the holiest days in the Christian calendar, marking Jesus's triumphant entrance to Jerusalem.- Pope prays for victims -Pope Francis, who is due in Cairo on April 28-29, offered prayers for the victims."Let us pray for the victims of the attack unfortunately carried out today," he said."May the Lord convert the heart of those who sow terror, violence and death and also the heart of those who make weapons and trade in them."Copts, who make up about one tenth of Egypt's population of more than 92 million and who celebrate Easter next weekend, have been targeted by several attacks in recent months.Jihadists and Islamists accuse Copts of supporting the military overthrow of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in 2013, which ushered in a deadly crackdown on his supporters. In December, a suicide bombing claimed by IS killed 29 worshippers in a Cairo church. The group later released a video threatening Egypt's Christians with more attacks.A spate of jihadist-linked attacks in the restive Sinai Peninsula, including the murder of a Copt in the city of El Arish, led some Coptic families to flee.About 250 Christians took refuge in the Suez Canal city of Ismailiya after IS in February called for attacks on the minority.US President Donald Trump led international condemnation of Sunday's attacks."So sad to hear of the terrorist attack in Egypt. US strongly condemns. I have great confidence that President Al Sisi will handle situation properly," he tweeted.- String of attacks -Egyptian Prime Minister Sherif Ismail stressed the authorities' determination to "eliminate terrorism".The Cairo-based Al-Azhar, an influential Sunni Muslim authority, said the attacks aimed to "destabilise security and... the unity of Egyptians".Egypt's Copts have endured successive attacks since Morsi's ouster in July 2013.More than 40 churches were targeted nationwide in the two weeks after the deadly dispersal by security forces of two pro-Morsi protest camps in Cairo on August 14 that year, Human Rights Watch said.Sisi, who as then army chief helped remove Morsi, has defended his security forces and accused jihadists of attacking Copts in order to divide the country. In October 2011, almost 30 people -- mostly Coptic Christians -- were killed outside the state television building in Cairo after the army charged at protesters denouncing the torching of a church in southern Egypt.A few months earlier, the unclaimed New Year's Day bombing of a Coptic church killed more than 20 people in second city Alexandria.

Egyptian worshippers recall horror of church blast-[AFP]-Maram Mazen-YAHOONEWS-April 9, 2017

Tanta (Egypt) (AFP) - Coptic Christian worshippers in Egypt spoke of horrific scenes on Sunday after a bomb ripped through their church during a service, mangling bodies and destroying pews."There was a violent explosion near the altar," Edmon Edward told AFP."Suddenly everything became black, people flew over each other," he said.He had been attending Palm Sunday mass at the Mar Girgis church in Tanta with his brother Emil, who stood with a white bandage wrapped around his head, when the attack claimed by the Islamic State group happened. The explosion killed at least 27 people, and was followed hours later by a second bombing at a church in Alexandria, which killed 17.At the church in Tanta, icons of Christ and St George looked down on a tangle of destroyed pews and congealing blood on the floor tiles."I head the blast, and then I saw a woman run barefoot with her face oozing blood," said a taxi driver who asked not to be identified. In hospital, a wounded witness told state television: "I just felt fire grabbing my face. I pushed my brother who was sitting next to me and then I heard people saying: 'explosion'."Nabil Nader, 65, who lives opposite the church, spoke of the attack's aftermath and said the first three rows of pews in the church were destroyed."I heard the blast and came running. I found people torn up... some people, only half of their bodies remained," he said."The father of a friend of my son was in the front row," he said, his voice breaking with anguish. "We found only his shoe."Nearby, a man held up a burned prayer book and a traditional braided palm-leaf crucifix, stained with blood."They came to pray and they died," he said."The victims were destroyed," said Mohammed, a nursing student helping at the hospital were the victims of the attack were taken."Some are broken up inside. Some are completely burned," he said.Police sirens wailed incessantly around the city as ambulances ferried victims to hospital.Police cordoned off the church, but residents who gathered nearby weer unable to hide their anger.Despite the presence of metal detectors, the bomber was apparently able to enter the building without any hindrance."How was the bomb able to enter, while police" were outside the church, asked Nagat Assaad, holding back tears."What are the detectors for? We don't want their protection."Egypt's Copts, who have suffered repeated deadly jihadist attacks, say they feel abandoned and discriminated against by the authorities in the predominantly Muslim country. But despite their fears, the Christians of Tanta said they are determined to defend their faith."We're Christian and we will stay Christian," one woman said in a defiant tone.

Movement of U.S. Navy strike group a reaction to North Korea: McMaster-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-April 9, 2017

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. decision to move a Navy strike group toward the Korean peninsula is a "prudent" reaction to a pattern of provocative behavior from North Korea, White House national security adviser H.R. McMaster said on Sunday.U.S. President Donald Trump will review options to remove the threat posed by North Korea's nuclear arsenal, McMaster told Fox News Sunday, adding that Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed with Trump last week that the situation is unacceptable."It's prudent to do it, isn't it?" McMaster said, when asked why the Navy strike group Carl Vinson, whose flagship is a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier of that name, will make its way toward the Korean peninsula from Singapore as a show of force.Reuters was the first to report the deployment on Saturday."This is a rogue regime that is now a nuclear-capable regime, and President Xi and President Trump agreed that that is unacceptable, that what must happen is the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula," McMaster said.North Korean officials, including leader Kim Jong Un, have repeatedly indicated an intercontinental ballistic missile test or something similar could be coming, possibly as soon as April 15, the 105th birthday of North Korea's founding president and celebrated annually as "the Day of the Sun."Pyongyang tested a liquid-fueled Scud missile this month.(Reporting by David Morgan; Editing by James Dalgleish)

5 Thou shalt fall upon the open field: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord GOD.
6 And I will send a fire on Magog,(NUCLEAR ATOMIC BOMB) and among them that dwell carelessly in the isles: and they shall know that I am the LORD.
7 So will I make my holy name known in the midst of my people Israel; and I will not let them pollute my holy name any more: and the heathen shall know that I am the LORD, the Holy One in Israel.
8 Behold, it is come, and it is done, saith the Lord GOD; this is the day whereof I have spoken.

Russia and Iran affirm commitment to Syrian government-[Associated Press]-PHILIP ISSA-YAHOONEWS-April 9, 2017

BEIRUT (AP) — Russia and Iran renewed their support for the Syrian government in a flurry of calls on Sunday, saying last week's U.S. missile strike violated Syrian sovereignty but failed to boost the morale of "terror groups" in Syria. In a phone call with Syrian President Bashar Assad, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani called the strike on Friday a "blatant violation" of Syrian sovereignty, Syrian state media reported. Assad accused the U.S. of trying to boost the morale of "terror groups" in Syria. The government refers to all those fighting against it as terrorists.A statement carried on the military media arm of Hezbollah condemned the American strike in much stronger language, saying it had "crossed red lines" and vowing to "reply with force" to any future aggression "in a variety of ways."The Lebanese militant group has invested thousands of fighters in the defense of Assad's government. The statement was made in the name of a previously unheard of "shared operations room" between Russia, Iran and allied forces. There was no comment from Russia or Iran about the statement. The Kremlin said in a statement Rouhani also spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin by phone."Both sides noted the inadmissibility of aggressive U.S. actions against a sovereign state in violation of international law," the statement said. "Vladimir Putin and Hasan Rouhani spoke in favor of an objective, unbiased investigation of all the circumstances of the chemical weapons incident on April 4 in the Syrian province of Idlib."Rouhani said the U.S. strike would not affect Iran's Syria policy, while Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Iran would not withdraw in the face of similar aggressions."What the Americans did is a strategic mistake and offense. They are repeating offense of their predecessors," Khamenei was quoted as saying by the official IRNA news agency.Iran has provided crucial military and economic assistance to Assad throughout Syria's six-year civil war. It has organized several Shiite militias from around the Middle East to fight in support of Assad's government and has sent troops and officers from its own Revolutionary Guards. The U.S. says the strike was in response to a nerve gas attack on the rebel-held town of Khan Sheikhoun last week, which has been widely blamed on government forces. The Syrian government has denied using chemical weapons.U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson denied in an interview on CBS's Face the Nation that the strikes signaled an overhaul of American policy, saying its priority remained to defeat Islamic State militants in the Middle East. The strike was the first time American forces targeted a Syrian government installation in the course of the war. U.S. Treasury officials say they are preparing sanctions in response to the chemical weapons attack, though the Syrian government is already buried under U.S. and E.U. sanctions.Tillerson will meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Moscow later this week. Moscow has been a steadfast ally of the Syrian government and has defended it against claims of chemical weapons use in front of the U.N. Security Council.A Syrian Sukhoi jet took off from the Shayrat airbase targeted by the volley of US strikes, Hezbollah's al-Manar TV channel reported Sunday, saying repairs to the base began within hours of the attack.Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu on Sunday played down concerns of a rift with Russia over Ankara's support for the strike, saying Turkey was committed to the cease-fire mechanisms it has developed with Russia for Syria. Turkey provides military support to some of Syria's opposition forces. But he said Turkey could not "remain silent" on the Syrian government's chemical weapons use, and insisted Moscow work with Ankara to establish a transitional government in Damascus."We want to continue our efforts with Russia in the Astana process in terms of measures to increase trust and establish a cease-fire," he told reporters in Antalya, according to the Anadolu state news agency. In the days after the Khan Sheikhoun attack, Turkey provided the Syrian Civil Defense search and rescue outfit with 50 protective kits for responding to chemical attacks, and trained them in their use, Anadolu said.___Associated Press writers Zeynep Bilginsoy in Istanbul, Jim Heintz in Moscow, and Nasser Karimi in Tehran contributed to this report.

PAUL BEGLEY AGREES WITH EARTHWATCH
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdZEu5_ENLs

WE KNOW THE ANTICHRIST IS ALIVE AND WELL ON THE EARTH. THERES NO ARGUMENT WITH THAT. HE WILL BE WITHIN THE EUROPEAN UNION PEACE NEGOTIATORS IN THE ISRAELI-PALESTINIAN NEGOTIATIONS. THE ONLY ARGUMENT IS HE WILL NOT BE REVEALED TO THE WORLD TILL AFTER THE RAPTURE OF THE CHRISTIANS HAPPENS. THEN HE WILL BE REVEALED TO THE WHOLE EARTH. AND NOT BEFORE. NOW HE WILL BE WORKING IN THE MIDEAST PEACE NEGOTIATIONS IN THE BACKROUND. UNTIL THE RAPTURE OCCURS. THEN HES REVEALED TO THE WORLD.

DANIEL 7:23-24
23 Thus he said, The fourth beast (EU,REVIVED ROME) shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth,(7TH WORLD EMPIRE) which shall be diverse from all kingdoms, and shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces.(TRADING BLOCKS-10 WORLD REGIONS/TRADE BLOCS)
24 And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings(10 NATIONS-10 WORLD DIVISION WORLD GOVERNMENT) that shall arise: and another shall rise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings.(EITHER THE EUROPEAN UNION DICTATOR BOOTS 3 COUNTRIES FROM THE EU OR THE DICTATOR TAKES OVER THE WORLD ECONOMY BY CONTROLLING 3 WORLD TRADE BLOCS)

REVELATION 17:9-13
9 And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth.(THE VATICAN IS BUILT ON 7 HILLS OR MOUNTAINS)
10 And there are seven kings: five are fallen,(1-ASSYRIA,2-EGYPT,3-BABYLON,4-MEDO-PERSIA,5-GREECE) and one is,(IN POWER IN JOHNS AND JESUS DAY-6-ROME) and the other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a short space.(7TH-REVIVED ROMAN EMPIRE OR THE EUROPEAN UNION TODAY AND THE SHORT SPACE IS-7 YEARS.THE EUROPEAN UNION WILL HAVE WORLD CONTROL FOR THE LAST 3 1/2 YEARS.BUT WILL HAVE ITS MIGHTY WORLD POWER FOR THE FULL 7 YEARS OF THE 7 YEAR TRIBULATION PERIOD.AND THE WORLD DICTATOR WILL BE THE BEAST FROM THE EU.AND THE VATICAN POPE WILL BE THE WHORE THAT RIDES THE EUROPEAN UNION TO POWER.AND THE 2 EUROPEAN UNION POWER FREAKS WILL CONTROL AND DECIEVE THE WHOLE EARTH INTO THEIR DESTRUCTION.IF YOU ARE NOT SAVED BY THE BLOOD OF JESUS.YOU WILL BE DECIEVED BY THESE TWO.THE WORLD POLITICIAN-THE EUROPEAN UNION DICTATOR.AND THE FALSE PROPHET THAT DEFECTS CHRISTIANITY-THE FALSE VATICAN POPE.
11 And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition.
12 And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast.
13 These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast.

DANIEL 9:26-27
26 And after threescore and two weeks(62X7=434 YEARS+7X7=49 YEARS=TOTAL OF 69 WEEKS OR 483 YRS) shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary;(ROMAN LEADERS DESTROYED THE 2ND TEMPLE) and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.(THERE HAS TO BE 70 WEEKS OR 490 YRS TO FUFILL THE VISION AND PROPHECY OF DAN 9:24).(THE NEXT VERSE IS THAT 7 YR WEEK OR (70TH FINAL WEEK).
27 And he ( THE ROMAN,EU PRESIDENT) shall confirm the covenant (PEACE TREATY) with many for one week:(1X7=7 YEARS) and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease,(3 1/2 yrs in TEMPLE ANIMAL SACRIFICES STOPPED) and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.
