Israeli officials on Wednesday warned Hamas to cease firing mortars at IDF troops on the border with the Gaza Strip or face a strong response from the army. Soon after Israeli jets were reported to have fired on targets in southern Gaza.The officials conveyed the warning to the Palestinian Islamist terror group through intermediaries, the Walla news site reported.“We responded firmly, and we also conveyed stern messages to them,” senior defense officials told Ynet.Israel’s warning came following six instances of cross-border fire from the Gaza Strip in the past day, including five mortars fired at Israeli troops near the border. The soldiers responded with tank fire, with at least one shell reportedly striking a power station in the Gaza City neighborhood of Shejaiya. Another report said a shell struck a house in Gaza City as well.Shortly thereafter, Palestinian media in the Gaza Strip reported Israeli planes carrying out several bombing runs striking targets near the southern city of Rafah. The federal government’s plan to legalize marijuana is a move the majority of Ontarians can get behind, a new poll says.Forum Research found that 56 per cent of Ontario voters surveyed approve of the promise made by the Trudeau government to legalize the drug. What’s more is that nearly a quarter of those asked said they will use marijuana in the next year if it were legalized. OTTAWA - Immigration Minister John McCallum says talks are underway with the military about again helping with efforts to bring Syrian refugees to Canada.He says it's part of the effort to meet a promise to private sponsors to get thousands of Syrians here by the end of this year or early next.McCallum says additional staff will head overseas this month to speed the processing of applications.The military assisted in the effort to bring 25,000 Syrians to Canada by the end of February by conducting security screening overseas and also prepared bases here for temporary housing, though they were never used.Hundreds of sponsorship groups were frustrated when the Liberals packed up that massive settlement effort at the end of February and returned refugee processing to its prior slow pace.Pressure they placed on the government saw the Liberals pledge to process all applications received by the end of March in an effort to bring in about 10,000 people.

Nelson also asked a detective for the name of the hospital that treated Prince.A law enforcement official who was briefed on the investigation into Prince's death says investigators are looking into whether Prince died from an overdose. That official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak to the media, also said investigators were also looking into whether Prince overdosed on the plane in Moline.The Associated Press obtained the emails through a public records request. So far, there are no reports of injuries.Forestry manager Bernie Schmitte said at a late Tuesday conference call with the media that the worst of the blaze "is not over.""We're still faced with very high temperatures (today), low relative humidities and some strong winds."Firefighters were trying to maintain crucial infrastructure in the city, including the only bridge across the Athabasca River and Highway 63, the only route to the city from the south.Fire Chief Darby Allen said they have requested military assistance and expect the army and air force will start sending out troops within a couple of days.Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted late Tuesday that he had spoken to Alberta Premier Rachel Notley and offered his government's support.In a statement issued Wednesday, Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale said the federal government is standing by to provide assistance."I am watching the wildfire situation in Fort McMurray with great concern, and my thoughts go out to all of the residents being evacuated from their homes," Goodale said.Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan, in a conference call from Germany early Wednesday, confirmed a formal request for assistance has been received from the Alberta government.What form that will take — at least on the military side — is still being determined and National Defence is expecting to hear soon from the provincial emergency measures about the kind of equipment and personnel required."We're making all assets available," he said. "I had to put a drenched towel over her face, practically smother her, to bring her to my vehicle."Bolger said her family was waiting to join the long line of vehicles fleeing south to Edmonton. She planned to bring Lilly to the Stollery Children's Hospital.Politicians of all stripes sent out their condolences, but the leader of Alberta's Opposition was busy dealing with his own loss.Wildrose Leader Brian Jean, who is member of the legislature for the area, said his home of the last 10 years was destroyed, and he expected his childhood home probably had been as well.He said businesses that have been in his family for three generations were also lost."It is a devastating impact but I'm hoping that we've had no loss of life," he said.The blaze had started on Sunday and seemed on its way to being neutralized Tuesday morning. On a recent Monday in April, more than 100 executives from some of the world’s largest financial institutions gathered for a private meeting at the Times Square office of Nasdaq Inc. They weren’t there to just talk about blockchain, the new technology some predict will transform finance, but to build and experiment with the software.By the end of the day, they had seen something revolutionary: U.S. dollars transformed into pure digital assets, able to be used to execute and settle a trade instantly. That’s the promise of a blockchain, where the cumbersome and error-prone system that takes days to move money across town or around the world is replaced with almost instant certainty. The event was created by Chain, one of many startups trying to rewire the financial industry, with representatives from Nasdaq, Citigroup Inc., Visa Inc., Fidelity, Fiserv Inc., Pfizer Inc. and others in the room.The event -- announced in a statement this Monday -- marked a key moment in the evolution of blockchain, notable both for what was achieved, as well as how many firms were involved. The technology’s potential has captivated Wall Street executives because it offers a way to free up billions of dollars by speeding transactions that currently can take days, tying up capital. But a huge piece of that puzzle is transforming cash into a digital form. And while some firms have conducted experiments, the Chain event showed a large number of them are now looking jointly at a potential solution.“We created a digital dollar” to show the group at Nasdaq an instant debit and credit on a blockchain, said Marc West, chief technology officer at Fiserv, a transaction and payments company with more than 13,000 clients across the financial industry. “This is the first time the money has moved.”-Quietly Building-Chain is already known in some Wall Street circles for its project to help Nasdaq shift trading of non-public company shares onto a blockchain. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Astronomers searching for life beyond our solar system may need to look no farther than a little, feeble nearby star.A Belgian-led team reported Monday that it's discovered three Earth-sized planets orbiting an ultra-cool dwarf star less than 40 light-years away. It's the first time planets have been found around this type of star — and it opens up new, rich territory in the search for extraterrestrial life.Because this star is so close and so faint, astronomers can study the atmospheres of these three temperate exoplanets and, eventually, hunt for signs of possible life. They're already making atmospheric observations, in fact, using NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope. The Hubble Space Telescope will join in next week.Altogether, it's a "winning combination" for seeking chemical traces of life outside our solar system, said Massachusetts Institute of Technology researcher Julien de Wit, a co-author of the study, released by the journal Nature.The star in question — named Trappist-1 after the Belgian telescope in Chile that made the discovery — is barely the size of Jupiter and located in the constellation Aquarius.Other exoplanet searches have targeted bigger, brighter stars more like our sun, but the starlight in these cases can be so bright that it washes out the signatures of planets. By comparison, cool dwarf stars that emit infrared light, like Trappist-1, make it easier to spot potential worlds.University of Liege astronomers in Belgium — lead study authors Michael Gillon and Emmanuel Jehin — built the Trappist telescope to observe 60 of the nearest ultra-cool dwarf stars. The risky effort paid off, de Wit noted in an email."Systems around these tiny stars are the only places where we can detect life on an Earth-sized exoplanet with our current technology," Gillon said in a statement. "So if we want to find life elsewhere in the universe, this is where we should start to look."The two inner exoplanets take between 1.5 and 2.4 days to orbit the Trappist-1 star. The precise orbit time of the third planet is not known, but it falls somewhere between 4.5 days and 73 days. That puts the planets 20 times to 100 times closer to their star than Earth is to our sun, Gillon noted. The setup is more similar in scale to Jupiter's moons than to our solar system, he added.Although the two innermost planets are very close to the star, it showers them with only a few times the amount of energy that Earth receives from our own sun. The third exoplanet farther out may receive significantly less of such radiation than Earth does.The astronomers speculate the two inner exoplanets may have pockets where life may exist, while the third exoplanet actually might fall within the habitable zone — real estate located at just the right distance from a star in order to harbor water and, possibly, life.Spitzer and Hubble should answer whether the exoplanets have large and clear atmospheres, according to de Wit. They also might be able to detect water and methane, if molecules are present.Future observatories, including NASA's James Web Space Telescope set to launch in 2018, should unearth even more details.Gillon and his colleagues identified the three exoplanets by observing regular dips in the infrared signals emanating from the Trappist-1 star, some 36 light-years away. A single light-year represents about 6 trillion miles.The astronomers conducted the survey last year using the Transiting Planets and Planetesimals Small Telescope, or Trappist. It's considered a prototype for a more expansive European project that will widen the search for potentially habitable worlds to 500 ultra-cool stars.
