Most of South Korea's cases have had connections to the first patient — either medical staff who treated him or patients who stayed near him at the hospital before he was diagnosed and isolated, and their family members.Tests on a 58-year-old woman who died of acute respiratory failure Monday showed she had been infected with the disease before her death, the Health Ministry said in a statement. A 71-year-old man who tested positive for the virus last week also died, it said.The statement said both stayed at the same hospital with the first patient.Health officials said Tuesday that about 750 people in South Korea were isolated at their homes or in state-run facilities after having contact with patients infected with the virus. They said the number could rise and that depending on their conditions many of the isolated could be banned from leaving the country.More than 50 schools and kindergartens near a hospital near Seoul where the 58-year-old patient who died was treated have canceled classes from Wednesday to Friday to let children stay home, according to the education agency in Gyeonggi province, which surrounds Seoul. The measure was taken after many parents asked the schools to take action, agency officials said.There is a growing sense of public alarm over the virus, with South Korean media criticizing the government for failing to swiftly cope with MERS in the initial stage of its landing in the country. Major shopping malls have reported a sharp increase in sales of masks, hand sanitizers and mouthwashes, and many people have been seen wearing masks on Seoul streets over the past few days.Last week, the son of one of the patients ignored doctor's orders to cancel a trip to China, where he was later diagnosed as that country's first MERS case. VATICAN CITY-The Vatican’s main spokesman has downplayed comments made about Australian Cardinal George Pell by a member of Pope Francis’ commission on clergy sexual abuse, saying the member was speaking in his own name and not in the authority of the commission.Commission member Peter Saunders, an English survivor of clergy sexual abuse, said in an Australian television interview Sunday that Pell had had an “almost sociopathic” disregard for abuse victims.Responding to Saunders’ interview, Vatican spokesman Jesuit Fr. Federico Lombardi said in a statement Monday that Saunders was speaking in his own name. The papal commission on clergy sexual abuse, Lombardi said in the statement, "does not have the task of investigating and pronouncing specific judgment on single cases.”The Vatican spokesman also referred journalists to Pell’s own statements on the matter, saying those "must be considered reliable and worthy of respect and attention."Saunders serves as one of 17 members of the papal commission, which is formally known as the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors. BRUSSELS, Today, 09:21-Leaders from Germany, France, the EU and the International Monetary Fund met on Monday night (1 June) in Berlin to prepare what could be a final offer for Greece.German chancellor Angela Merkel, French president Francois Hollande and EU Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker were in the German capital for a meeting with European Roundtable of Industrialists and had planned to talk about Greece in the margins of the meeting.They were joined in a dramatic last minute move by European Central Bank president Mario Draghi and IMF leader Christine Lagarde.The talks ended around midnight and Merkel's office issued a statement saying the participants "agreed that work must now be continued with greater intensity”."They have been in closest contact in recent days and want to remain so in the coming days, both among themselves and naturally also with the Greek government," the statement continued.The unscheduled meeting of Greece's creditors took place four days before Greece is due to repay €300 million to the IMF, with three other repayments also coming later this month.An agreement with Greece would unblock a €7.2 billion international loan.The talks were to work on a common proposal that would be sent to the Greek government this week, said diplomatic sources.According to the Financial Times, the talks in Berlin focused on a technical paper prepared by the European Commission that could be the basis for a compromise.Greece's lenders hold different views over whether to make concessions to Athens, with the IMF reportedly more strict on the rules and the Commission and ECB more willing to fence off the Eurozone from the risk of a Grexit.The statement issued after the meeting suggests that these differences were not completely overcome.The Berlin meeting also took place the day after Greek prime minister Alexis Tsipras wrote in Le Monde newspaper that his government already made "serious concessions" and was not responsible for the lack of agreement.German media said on Monday night that the Greek PM was ready to consider pension cuts and an increase of the retirement age.The question now will be whether a "take it or leave it" offer from the lenders will help Tsipras win the backing of his Syria party, where tensions are growing over the prospect of further concessions.On Tuesday morning, EU Finance commissioner Pierre Moscovici said on French radio that "discussions are starting to bear fruits"."A deal is possible, desirable, necessary and it is within reach," he said.

BRUSSELS, Today, 12:53-With Greek leaders in 11th-hour talks on the country’s second bailout, Greek MPs are investigating the legality of the bailouts and whether Greek debt has to be repaid.A “truth” committee on public debt and a committee for the “memoranda”, the name of the documents which contain the bailout terms, were set up in March and April under the leadership of Zoe Konstantopoulou, the speaker of the Vouli, the Greek parliament.Konstantopoulou (c), with Sakorafa (l), and Belgian economist Toussaint on the debt truth committee-Their first findings are expected on 18 June.The probes are complemented by a committee on German World War II reparations and on the return of Greek archeological treasures.They are also complemented by the reopening, on 1 May, of the Siemens and Lagarde List cases by the Vouli’s committee on institutions and transparency.The Siemens case involves bribes for Greek officials in exchange for public contracts for the German firm in the 1990s and in the run-up to the 2004 Athens Olympics.The Lagarde List is a register of tax evaders transmitted to the Greek government by International Monetary Fund (IMF) chief Christine Lagarde in 2010, but never properly investigated.The various initiatives are designed to delegitmise the austerity measures imposed by Greece’s creditors, the EU - the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and the European Central Bank (ECB) - since 2010.They are being used as a “bargaining chip” in the bailout talks.They’re designed to help Syriza heal tensions inside its own ranks, with radical MPs growing more critical of the PM’s, Alexis Tsipras’, concessions.They are also designed to harm his political opponents, the conservative New Democracy (ND) and the socialist Pasok parties.The old Greek elite, which has shared power since the country’s return to democracy in 1974, agreed the bailout terms and stands accused of shady relations with Greek oligarchs.

Political bomb

"Greece is not a liegeman whose lenders can play games behind its back," Tsipras said on 7 April, during the vote which set up the memoranda committee.The memoranda probe could be the most explosive domestically. It’s looking into the circumstances in which the Pasok government of George Papandreou and the ND-Pasok government of Lucas Papademos signed terms with the troika, a group of EU, IMF and ECB officials.Konstantopoulou, the Vouli speaker, who used to be human rights lawyer, told EUobserver it could prompt criminal charges."The committee will look into possible criminal responsibility for the memoranda regime which has basically victimised the Greek population but also totally destroyed the Greek economy,” she said.It’s composed of Syriza, ND and Pasok MPs and has already summoned witnesses from Greece’s Public Debt Management Agency, the General Accounting Office, and the Hellenic Statistical Authority. Some MPs also want to interrogate former Greek finance ministers and international officials, such as former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn, former ECB president Jean-Claude Trichet, and former EU finance commissioner Olli Rehn.

Truth

The truth committee, despite its name and despite Konstantopoulou’s patronage, is not a formal parliamentary inquiry.It’s an audit conducted by a group of some 30 experts from civil society, half of whom are Greek and half of whom are foreign.It includes academics, jurists, and former civil servants and is co-led by a Belgian economist, Eric Toussaint, and by Ecuador’s former finance minister Diego Borja.Ecuador, under president Rafael Correa, ran a similar audit before suspending international repayments in 2008."It’s very widely believed, justly believed, that a very big part of what is currently called the [Greek] public debt is illegitimate, illegal, and odious, and, of course, unsustainable”, Konstantopoulou said.Her vocabulary refers to notions used by global anti-debt activists.Campaigners say that: if debt harms public interest but favours a minority then it’s illegitimate; if it violates the debtor’s national laws, it’s illegal; that if it violates human rights, it’s odious; and if it can’t be repaid unless it harms fundamental rights, such as the right to healthcare, it’s unsustainable.

Timing

The full audit is to last at least a year.But a preliminary report will be issued on 18 June, shortly before the end of the current bailout programme, when Tsipras is set to ask for debt restructuring and for new, long-term, assistance.Patrick Saurin, a French trade unionist on the truth committee, told EUobserver “our work is to identify the four kinds of debt” in Greece."The government will quickly have a clear picture and will be able to decide on a debt moratorium or cancellation”.It prompts the question whether Tsipras will follow Ecuador and use the “truth” report to also stop repayments."The government has a mandate to serve the people, so I’m sure it will make good use of the outcome of the works of the committee”, Konstantopoulou said.Sofia Sakorafa, a Syriza MEP, who helped initiate the audit, told EUobserver it’s “a robust bargaining chip” in Tsipras’ negotiations."The committee aims to equip the Greek government with legal arguments on the issue of the removal of the debt”.moral high ground-Referring to the mixed bag of Vouli initiatives, Sakorafa added: "clearly, there is a political and moral link" between the probes. Konstantopoulou said “auditing and decoding the debt [will] serve a fundamental and undeniable right of the people to truth and to justice”."It’s very important to … show which part [of the debt] corresponds to which lending agreement or [former] government actions, and to show which deals were concluded not for the public interest, but very often in order to serve corruption at a very, very high level”.

JIANLI COUNTY, China (Reuters) - Rescuers fought bad weather on Tuesday as they searched for more than 400 people, many of them elderly Chinese tourists, missing after a cruise boat was buffeted by a freak tornado and capsized on the Yangtze River.The accident on Monday night is likely to end up as China's worst shipping disaster in almost 70 years.Divers and other rescue workers pulled five people they found trapped in the upturned hull of the four-deck Eastern Star, a fraction of the 458 people state media reported were on board when the ship capsized.Distraught relatives of some of the passengers scuffled with officials in the city of Shanghai, where many of those on board booked their trips, angry about what they said was a lack of information.Dozens of rescue boats battled wind and rain to reach the ship, which lay upturned in water about 15 meters (50 feet) deep.The Xinhua news agency said rescuers could hear people calling for help from inside the ship's hull and television showed rescuers cutting through it with an angle grinder.One of the people pulled from the capsized boat was a 65-year-old woman. Divers fixed breathing equipment to her nose and mouth to bring her up from under the water.About another dozen people had been rescued and six bodies recovered, media reported, leaving more than 430 people unaccounted for.China's weather bureau said a tornado hit the area where the boat was, a freak occurrence in a country where tornados do happen but are not common.The disaster could bring a bigger toll than the sinking of a ferry in South Korea in April 2014 that killed 304 people, most of them children on a school trip.The People's Daily, which published a passenger manifest on its microblog, said those on board the Eastern Star ranged in age from three to more than 80.Tour guide Zhang Hui, 43, told Xinhua the boat sank very fast and he scrambled out a window in torrential rain, clutching a life vest as he could not swim."Wave after wave crashed over me; I swallowed a lot of water," Zhang said, adding that he was unable to flag down passing boats and finally struggled ashore as dawn broke holding onto a branch.President Xi Jinping had ordered that no efforts be spared in the rescue and Premier Li Keqiang went to the scene of the accident in central Hubei province, Xinhua said.About 60 family members gathered outside a travel agency in Shanghai and demanded information."I only found out about this on the television news while I was at work and I came here," said 35-year-old Wang Sheng, whose said his mother and father were on board. "I cried all the way here and here I can't find anyone, the door is locked."

CAPTAIN DETAINED BY POLICE

The ship's captain and the chief engineer, who were among the few to be rescued, had been detained by police for questioning, Xinhua said.According to the Yangtze River navigation administration, the pair said the ship sank quickly after it was caught in the tornado.Xinhua reported that initial investigations had found the ship was not overloaded and it had enough life vests on board for its passengers. Those rescued were wearing life vests, Xinhua said.Among those on board were 406 tourists, many of them elderly, along with 47 crew members and five tour guides, the People's Daily said.State radio said the ship went over in about two minutes and no distress call had been issued. Seven people swam to shore to raise the alarm, media said.Fishing boats were among the dozens of vessels helping in the search and rescue, Xinhua said, and more than 1,000 police with 40 inflatable boats had also been sent.The Eastern Star, which has the capacity to carry more than 500 people, was heading to southwestern Chongqing city from Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu province. MOSCOW (AP) — The Russian maker of the Buk air defense missile system said Tuesday that it has concluded that Malaysian Airlines flight 17 was downed by an older version of the missile, which isn't in service with the Russian military but is in Ukrainian arsenals.Controversy continues over who shot down the plane last summer over eastern Ukraine, killing all 298 people aboard. Ukraine and the West suspect it was destroyed by a Russian surface-to-air missile fired by Russian soldiers or Russia-backed separatist rebels fighting in the area. Russia denies that.Mikhail Malyshevsky, an adviser to the director general of the missile maker, state-controlled Almaz-Antei consortium, said at a news conference Tuesday that its analysis was based on photographs of the wreckage available to the public. He said the holes in the plane's parts were consistent with a specific type of Buk missile and its warhead.Each of the Buk subtypes has its warhead rigged with shrapnel of a specific shape. Washington (AFP) - The US military released a video Monday of a Russian Su-24 bomber flying past an American warship in the Black Sea to dispel what it called inaccurate media reports about a routine encounter.In the video, a Su-24 aircraft appears in the distance, then zooms by the USS Ross -- a guided-missile destroyer.Other Russian bombers also flew within sight of the ship, officials said.Such footage is rarely released publicly but the US Navy decided to post it "because we were unsatisfied with the press reporting, and we wanted to show exactly what happened," Pentagon spokesman Colonel Steven Warren told reporters.None of the Russian aircraft that flew by the ship were armed and neither side took any aggressive action, Warren said."This was simply a ship and a plane passing in the day in this case," he said.Some Russian media had suggested that the aircraft forced the American destroyer to shift course away from Russian territorial waters off the coast of Crimea.But the Pentagon said those reports were "erroneous" and "didn't reflect the facts."The USS Ross was in international waters and "never changed course, never deviated from its mission," he said.And there was no communication between the Russian planes and the US vessel.The Russian aircraft got to within about 1,600 feet (500 meters) from the ship while flying at an altitude of about 600 feet, officials said.With tensions rising over Moscow's armed intervention in Ukraine over the past year, Russia has stepped up flights of its bomber fleet, particularly over the airspace of NATO states.

Iowa is trying to figure out how to deal with a mountain of dead - and reeking - chickens.Federal health experts are hopeful that the virulent bird flu that has devastated Midwestern poultry farms in recent months has reached its peak and will taper off as the weather warms. But worried state officials aren't taking chances.Fears that the virus, which has led to the deaths of nearly 45 million birds in 16 states and Canada, could come roaring back in the fall, when temperatures cool, have agriculture officials across the U.S. preparing for the worst.Even states that haven't been hit yet are taking no chances."We're better safe than sorry," said Dr. Robert Cobb, state veterinarian for Georgia, the nation's leading producer of chickens raised for meat, which has not had any cases so far. "All the research I've been able to find is showing that this virus could likely stick around for years."

GEARING UP

After a backyard flock in northeastern Indiana tested positive in early May - the state's first case of the virus - Indiana's State Board of Animal Health banned all bird shows at county fairs this summer, following similar moves in Iowa, Minnesota and Pennsylvania.The board and other state agencies also began planning what they would need in the event of a wider outbreak, including portable toilets and protective gear for personnel.And they asked the Department of Corrections to begin training non-violent offenders to help with any culls needed.In late May, the first group of 50 inmates were fit-tested for respirators, and began training on how to safely remove chickens from cages and transfer them to an enclosed cart used to asphyxiate the birds.Denise Derrer, spokeswoman for the state board of animal health, said crews of low-level offenders have also helped with state recovery efforts after floods and tornadoes and will be used in the event of a wider outbreak."We can't count on warm weather killing off this virus," Derrer said.To the south, Mississippi State Veterinarian Jim Watson, whose state has so far escaped the outbreak, is prepping for the virus to arrive later this year or in early 2016. He and his team have discussed road barricades, biosecurity and the possibility of declaring a state of emergency.The team has purchased a second foam-based system, used to spray inside infected barns and suffocate birds."We're on the Mississippi River, so there's going to have to be geese and ducks that are contaminated coming down that flyway," Watson said. DATA QUESTIONS

While the outbreak does appear to be slowing in the Midwest, where most of the 44.6 million affected birds have been located, outbreak spikes can be difficult to spot quickly in the federal data.The USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) reports cases that its labs confirm, but these numbers often come days or weeks after state agencies have identified and reported probable cases.Just a day after USDA Chief Veterinary Officer John Clifford told Reuters last week that the agency believed the worst was over, Nebraska announced that a new egg farm with 3 million hens had tested positive. CLEANUP WOES

Even if the outbreak is waning for now, cleanup is far from over.On Friday, the USDA said it wanted to hire more federal contractors "due to the size and scope" of the outbreak. The USDA and Iowa have contracts with three landfills in the state, including one with a large incinerator, to help speed up culling, bird disposal and barn clean-up.For locals, help can't come soon enough. CAIRO (Reuters) - In his battle against militant Islam, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi is relying not just on bomber planes and soldiers but on white-turbaned clerics from Al-Azhar, Egypt's 1,000-year-old center for Islamic learning. He wants clerics to counter radicalism in the classroom.In a televised speech in January at an Al-Azhar conference center in Cairo, Sisi called for "a religious revolution" in Islam. Radicalized thinking, he told the audience of Islamic scholars, had become "a source of anxiety, danger, killing and destruction for the rest of the world."That had to change – and the scholars had a leading role to play, in schools, mosques and on the airwaves."You, imams, are responsible before Allah. The entire world is waiting. The entire world is waiting for your next word because this nation is being torn apart."Surprised by the president's bluntness, the scholars went "white as sheets," some of those in the audience told a Western official.The president's warning is part of a much larger project. To contain the radical Islamist movement roiling his nation, Sisi has most conspicuously been using the law and brute force. But he is also promoting a more moderate and less politicized version of the faith.In that struggle the Al-Azhar institution is one of the most important fronts for Sisi – and for the wider region. The outcome of the struggle in Egypt, the intellectual and cultural capital of the Arab world, has ramifications far beyond its borders.The Al-Azhar mosque was built in the 10th century and is one of the oldest in Egypt. It opened a university that spread Shi'ite Islam until the end of the Fatimid Caliphate in 1171. It later turned into a Sunni mosque and university that taught the four schools of mainstream Sunni Islam.Today the university's various faculties and research centers have 450,000 students, many from countries across Asia and Africa. It also has a network of more than 9,000 schools across Egypt attended by more than 2 million students.Al-Azhar's teachers, preachers, and researchers have so far introduced a few small changes. They include tweaking text books and setting up an online monitoring center to track militant statements on social media so the institute can better refute them. But there is no detailed reform program yet, and Al-Azhar officials openly acknowledge the magnitude of the challenge ahead.To be successful, Sisi will need to achieve what many before him have not: balancing tough security measures with education to encourage a more moderate version of Islam. Past experiences in Egypt, Syria, Algeria, and Iraq show that attempts to crack down on extremism can also stoke it. So far the results of Sisi's drive have been mixed.The president is deeply religious and has a mark on his forehead from years of pressing his head to the carpet in daily prayer. His wife and daughter wear the veil. His reputation for piety was so well known that his predecessor, Mohamed Mursi, a leading figure in the Muslim Brotherhood and Egypt's first freely-elected president, appointed him army chief in August 2012.Yet Sisi was also bold enough to seize power from Mursi after the Brotherhood leader became increasingly unpopular. Since then, he has cracked down hard on the Brotherhood. Hundreds of the group's supporters have been killed, and thousands jailed. This month a Cairo court recommended the death sentence for Mursi in connection with a mass jail break in 2011.Balancing that sort of force with a message of moderation is difficult. Some students at Al-Azhar say they are deeply skeptical of the institution, and of the government's plans. Many dismiss Al-Azhar as a mouthpiece for the state, which favors the military and political elites over the poor masses where militants find most of their recruits.Some students told Reuters the security crackdown was counterproductive. Cairo's heavy-handed tactics, they say, are radicalizing people who may have been open to a message of moderation.Western officials praise Sisi's calls for action but question whether he has any real plan. "There's a kernel of a very big idea in what Sisi wants to do," said one. "But his vision of it is not exactly clear and it's not clear how it will be implemented."

MODERNIZING TEXTS

Critics say Al-Azhar's Grand Imams have long issued religious edicts in support of government policy. During the time of Hosni Mubarak, Egypt's president for three decades until his overthrow in 2011, the Grand Imam was appointed by presidential decree.The military government that took over from Mubarak gave Al-Azhar more independence. It allowed an Al-Azhar committee to elect the Grand Imam, though the winner still had to be ratified by presidential decree.When Mursi came to power in 2012, Al-Azhar criticized his policies and accused the Brotherhood of trying to place its own men into top teaching positions. By contesting and winning faculty seats, the Brotherhood ultimately did gain some influence in the institution.Since Sisi seized power, though, Al-Azhar has purged Mursi-era professors and teachers, and returned to an appointment system in which the state plays a major role. It has also publicly backed Sisi's crackdown on the Brother hood and militants. Al-Azhar's Grand Imam, Ahmed al-Tayeb, was one of a few public figures who flanked Sisi as he announced the military takeover in 2013 after days of mass protests against Mursi.The university has issued new rules stating that any student or faculty member who incites, supports or joins in protests that disrupt learning or promote rioting or vandalism will be expelled or fired.Beginning in 2013, Al-Azhar also started to simplify its curriculum to make it more compatible with the modern age, said Abbas Shuman, Al-Azhar deputy head. School text book passages describing the spoils of war and slavery have been removed, he said, because they were applicable during the Muslim conquests but are now considered out of date.An introduction to an online version of a book on Islamic theology now reads: "We present this scientific content to our sons and daughters and ask God that he bless them with tolerance and moderate thought ... and for them to show the right picture of Islam to people."Sitting in Al-Azhar's headquarter in old Cairo, Shuman said that such changes are reasonable. "Al-Azhar is built on Islamic heritage. But not all of it is sacred," he said.The university insists that students should not read old religious texts without guidance. And Professor Abdel Fattah Alawari, dean of the Islamic theology faculty at Al-Azhar, said specialized panels had also been created to review books written by professors to make sure they do not lean towards extremism.Clerics are also trying to modernize methods of communication. Al-Azhar recently started a YouTube channel to counter Islamist propaganda with its own, and has begun using social media to condemn Islamic State atrocities. Sheikhs from Al-Azhar have embarked on tours of youth centers around the country to promote moderate thought and discourage radicalism.Abdel Hay Azab, president of Al-Azhar's university, said: "Al-Azhar university educates scientists, preachers, doctors and engineers. So when Al-Azhar provides its educational services to society, it has to be with the right vision for religion, which is that religion should not be seen as an obstacle in society."

"FIQH-LITE"

The reforms have not been universally welcomed. Al-Azhar's university campuses saw several violent pro-Brotherhood protests after Mursi was deposed. Some students are opposed to changes to the curriculum.Yousef Hamdi, a third year student studying Islamic theology, said he was upset that he has not been taught the four mainstream schools of thought on Sunni learning and the differences between them. They include rulings by early prominent clerics such as "using force against oppression and rejecting the ruler."Like some other students, he feels the reforms mean he is not being taught the full teachings of Islam. The result, Hamdi said, is that some students now seek out books that teach what they feel is pure and traditional Islamic jurisprudence."A number of students have become radicalized as a result of that, because they turned to these texts on radicalization without aid and instruction from Al-Azhar," he said.Another student, who met with Reuters in the Cairo metro to avoid detection by security services, said the move to a softer version of fiqh – the interpretation of Islamic Sha'ria law – has made people angry. "They want to change the curriculum ... They've turned it into 'fiqh-lite'," he said.Shuman, Al-Azhar's deputy head, said the curriculum changes have not weakened the fiqh taught. "Sha'ria law allows for rulings that are no longer applicable to the modern age to be reviewed to make it more suitable for this age," he said.But H.A. Hellyer, a nonresident fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington, questioned Al-Azhar's approach. "The students need to be able to contextualize those references properly ... Otherwise they'll end up being susceptible to radicals who'll give them those references, but in a monumentally flawed fashion," he said.It is not hard to find radical texts. Just outside Al-Azhar mosque in Cairo's old quarter, a maze of alleyways is filled with scores of bookshops that sell both mainstream Islamic titles and books by more extreme Islamist scholars, including Ibn Taymiyya and Sheikh Kishk.One booklet by Ibn Taymiyya contains stand-alone statements such as "Honesty in faith is not complete without jihad for the sake of God." More moderate Islamic scholars have criticized such statements because they lack any context for when jihad is justified. Bookshop owners said that they even quietly sell books by Sayyid Qutb, an Egyptian Brotherhood leader in the middle of last century who is widely seen as the father of modern radical Islamist ideology.

DOWNSIDE OF TOUGH ACTION

The security crackdown may be undermining the attempted education reforms, hardening the outlook of students already sympathetic to Islamists and ostracizing some moderates.Take the 18-year-old Al-Azhar student who goes by the nickname Abu Obeida al-Ansari. The teenager attended Al-Azhar schools from his early years. Two years ago he joined protests in Cairo against Sisi. The protesters were angry about the fierce security crackdown that killed scores of Brotherhood members and sympathizers. The teenager was later arrested, he said, for standing next to a Brotherhood member in the street as security forces closed in.Ansari told Reuters via Facebook that Al-Azhar was wrong to back Sisi. He said the institution is "penetrated" by Egypt's security agencies and pro-government thinking, and that it teaches about Sha'ria Islamic law but doesn't implement it.Ansari said he had also grown disillusioned with the Brotherhood, which he believes buckled too easily under state pressure. He wants to join Islamic State, he said, "whether in Libya, Syria or Iraq, and then return to Egypt to take revenge on every apostate in the army and police who killed and arrested my friends."He added: "Everybody ought to join jihad ... HYDERABAD, India (AP) — Despite hopes that weekend thundershowers would help end a raging heat wave in southern India, the rain brought only limited relief as the death toll since mid-April approached 2,200.Officials said Sunday that the intense heat was likely to continue for another day in worst-hit Andhra Pradesh and Telangana states.Daytime temperatures hovered between 45 and 47 degrees Celsius (113-116 Fahrenheit) in parts of the two states over the weekend, 3 to 7 degrees Celsius (5 to 12 degrees Fahrenheit) above normal, said K.Y. Reddy, a director of the Meteorological Center in the Telangana state capital of Hyderabad. Thundershowers brought relief to people in other areas.Andhra Pradesh has been hit the hardest, with 1,636 people dying in the state from the heat over the past month and a half, a government statement said. Another 561 people have died in neighboring Telangana, said Sada Bhargavi, a state disaster management commissioner.Heat-related deaths also have been reported in other parts of India.Twenty-two people have died in northern Uttar Pradesh state over the past two weeks, said Raj Shekhar, a state government official. In many cases children in uniform walked through rubble to attend lessons in temporary classrooms made of bamboo or in tents on playing fields, after their schools were destroyed or badly damaged in the quake that struck on April 25.Eight-year-old Sahaj Shrestha clung to his father as they arrived together at the gates of the state-run Madan Smarak School in the Kathmandu valley.Sahaj's mother Mina Shrestha said their son has been too terrified to leave their side, even to go to the toilet, since the quake destroyed their home and forced them to live in a tent."Aftershocks are still continuing. It is difficult not to be nervous about sending the children to school again," Shrestha told AFP."But the teachers have assured us that it is safe here, and at least his mind will be fresh if he meets his friends and studies," she said.Classrooms made of bamboo have been built on the school's football field, while some lessons were held in buildings checked by engineers after the quake and marked "safe".Teachers sat with the younger children as they drew or played, with some relieved to return to a degree of normality."We've been staying home for so long, it is nice to play here and meet my friends again," said nine-year-old Muskan Bajracharya.In senior classes, students were encouraged to talk about the quake or share stories about what happened to their families."We are not holding any formal classes and have trained the teachers to help the children overcome the trauma of the quake and adjust to (being back at) school," said principal Govinda Poudel.Yubraj Adhikari, who is leading counselling initiatives by the International Committee of the Red Cross in quake-hit communities, said teachers must be alert to any behavioural changes."It is normal for children to act differently after such an experience, but we have to keep an eye out for any signs of long-term trauma in a child," he said.

-'Education cannot wait'-

The 7.8-magnitude quake damaged nearly 8,000 schools, while some 90 per cent of them are estimated to be have been destroyed in the worst-hit rural districts of Gorkha, Sindhupalchowk and Nuwakot.The quake struck on a Saturday afternoon when schools were closed. Many had been preparing to open the following week for the new semester."I don't even want to imagine what would have happened if it had been a school day," said Sakuntala Bhlon, 37, whose two children study in classes five and eight.The reopening had been set for May 17, but was delayed after a second major 7.4-magnitude quake rattled the country on May 12.
The UN Children's Fund UNICEF has warned that the disaster could reverse the progress Nepal has made in education over the last 25 years, during which primary school enrolment has risen from 64 per cent to more than 95 per cent."The longer children stay home, the more difficult it will be for them to return to school," Tomoo Hozumi, UNICEF Nepal representative, told AFP."Education cannot wait. It needs to be part and parcel of the relief and rehabilitation package."For some schools, however, reopening so soon after the quake has proved impossible, with temporary classrooms still being built and continuing concerns about safety and space."It is impossible for me to reopen right now. The school ground is filled with debris and we don't have an open space," said Lila Nanda Upadhyay, principal of Rupak Memorial International School in the Kathmandu valley.Dilli Ram Rimal, education department director general, said he hoped more schools would reopen in coming weeks."We understand that not all schools have the resources to reopen," he said."But education is an important part of the recovery and we need to begin the process."
