vatican city-Syria’s fratricidal war and the consequent humanitarian catastrophe was at the centre of the Pope’s first day in the Holy Land. On Friday 30 May, a summit promoted by Cor Unum will be held in the Vatican to coordinate the work of agencies that offer humanitarian aid in a country that has been torn apart by a three year conflict. Vatican Insider discusses this with cardinal Robert Sarah who will turn 69 this coming 15 June. Cardinal Sarah is President of Cor Unum and Archbishop Emeritus of Conakry.
At the start of his pilgrimage to the Holy Land, when he was in Amman, Pope Francis asked for negotiations in Syria to reopen. What is the current situation like?
“First of all we should thank the Pope for bringing the Syrian question to the fore again during his visit to the Holy Land. The situation is still very serious: the war continues, to the indifference of the international community and peace negotiations have come to a standstill. According to the information we have at our disposal, there are about 140 thousand victims, more than 9 million people in need of healthcare and 60% of hospitals have been destroyed or are not fit for use. There are more than 2 million Syrian refugees, most of whom are living in countries in the Middle Eastern and Mediterranean region. 52% of these refugees are children and young people under the age of 17. Then there are 6 million internally displaced persons. It is a humanitarian catastrophe.”
Do you have any news regarding the whereabouts of Fr. Dall’Oglio?
“Unfortunately not, no official news. I am concerned about the revelations made by the press in recent days and I pray that they prove to be false and that Fr. Dall’Oglio will soon be able to return to his loved ones.”
What if the Holy See’s position regarding the Syrian conflict?
“The Holy See wants the parties involved in the conflict to allow the deployment of humanitarian aid efforts immediately and to put an end to hostilities: the goal has to be an agreement for lasting peace. We believe the country’s territorial integrity must be guaranteed. In tomorrow’s Syria there needs to be space for everyone, including Christian communities and all other minority communitites.”
What should the international community do in your opinion?
“For starters it should wake up from the slumber it has fallen into. It is bizarre that a missile falling on a militant post makes headlines more than the news about a population that is dying of hunger and poverty. Selfishness needs to be put aside and efforts need to be made to ensure a return to negotiations. Geneva 2 cannot mark the failure of the peace strategy: the courage needs to be found to take joint action, particularly among the big powers such as the US and Russia and then the Middle Eastern countries involved in the conflict. It doesn’t seem right to plan to arm or train combatants whilst at the same time looking for ways in which to achieve peace.”
Cor Unum has organised a coordination meeting for agencies working in the context of the Syrian crisis. Why? What will be the main issues the meeting will focus on?
“We felt there was a need – highlighted by the Catholic organizations whose work is centered around the Syrian crisis - to look for new forms of coordination between them and with the Holy See. The 30 May meeting which will be attended by 25 agencies operating in Syria and neighbouring countries will give us the chance to weigh up everything that has been done already and pinpoint emergencies and priorities for the future. For example: is it possible to create a greater synergy between the work of local bishops and the planning work of agencies? How to deal with the educational and employment emergency that a large part of the Syrian population is experiencing? I should remind everyone that this meeting continues on from the one that was held in June last year. That meeting led to the establishment of the first office for the coordination of information in Beirut. Its work will be evaluated and appraised during the course of the meeting.
What does the Pontifical Council Cor Unum do for Syria?
“Cor Unum’s work combines material assistance ( the building of schools, hospitals, houses and the supply of foodstuffs) with spiritual guidance and the ideal of Catholic organisations. We promote coordination between those operating in the field and in many cases we carry out development projects together with institutional and private partners. A health mission for young Syrian refugees in Lebanon, carried out in association with Rome’s Bambino Gesù hospital, Caritas Lebanon and external sponsors such as the Fondazione Raoul Follereau, has allowed us to help more than 4 thousand children. According to UNICEF, there are more than 5 million children who urgently need help: 10 thousand apparently died in the war, 1, 2 million are refugees in neighbouring countries and about 3 million children do not go to school.”
And what concrete actions is the Church taking?
“The Church has been following the developments in the Syrian crisis from the start, both diplomatic and humanitarian developments. It has allocated more than 80 million dollars for humanitarian projects in different sectors, for example assistance to children and the elderly, food, the rebuilding of residence complexes and churches and education. There are more than 62 institutions operating on the ground and over 42 Catholic bodies have financed these projects. Almost 18 million dollars have been invested in the educational field for example, to rebuild schools and guarantee children’s right to study or to promote training courses. This has helped more than 310 thousand young people and help also reached refugees in neighbouring States: Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey, Cyprus, Egypt, Iraq and Armenia. But there is still a great deal left to do.”
What is the situation of Christian communities? Christianity risks disappearing from countries where it has been present since the apostolic times. What is the Church asking for?
“It would be a scandal if Christianity ceased to exist in the place where Jesus was born and began preaching. The Church was born in the Middle East and Christian communities have proven to be useful instruments for reconciliation. As Pope Francis said in Amman they “contribu[te] to the common good of the society of which they are fully a part.” I do not think it is in any one’s interests to suffocate the prospects for peace which they can offer. So the Church is asking for everyone to take this incredibly serious fact on board: we cannot always wait for a church to be destroyed or a cleric killed to speak about it. If the peace process takes off again, as we hope it will, we will need to guarantee the presence of all communities in a new Syria. And in this context, we believe that the country’s territorial integrity must be defended.”

Francis asked Pizzaballa to organise the prayer meeting in the Vatican, which he announced at the end of the mass he celebrated in bethlehem last Sunday. The official date has now been set and was announced by the Vatican spokesman, Fr. federico Lombardi: it will take place on Sunday 8 June (the feast of Pentecost) in the Vatican.As is known, the prayer meeting between the Pope, the Palestinian president Abu Mazen and Israeli president Shimon Peres must take place before the latter’s mandate comes to an end. The purpose of this meeting is not to attempt mediation or discuss new road maps: Francis wants to keep the encounter strictly religious.“The purpose of the meeting will be to pray not to mediate,” Francis said on the return flight from the Holy Land to Rome. “The two presidents and I will only meet to pray and I believe that prayer is important and doing this helps. Then they will go home. There will be a rabbi, a Muslim and me. I have asked the Custody of the Holy land to deal with the practical side of things,” Francis went on to say. As the Pope confirmed in another part of the interview, the meeting was supposed to take place in the Holy Land but did not because of “logistical” problems.When he made the surprise announcement about the invitation extended to the two presidents last Sunday in Bethlehem, Francis said: "In this place where the Prince of Peace was born, I desire to invite you, President Mahmoud Abbas, and President Shimon Peres, to raise together with me an intense prayer to God for the gift of peace. And I offer my house in the Vatican to host you in this encounter of prayer." "Everyone wants peace, many people build it every day with small gestures, many suffer patiently and bear the fatigue of many attempts to build it. vatican city-Syria’s fratricidal war and the consequent humanitarian catastrophe was at the centre of the Pope’s first day in the Holy Land. On Friday 30 May, a summit promoted by Cor Unum will be held in the Vatican to coordinate the work of agencies that offer humanitarian aid in a country that has been torn apart by a three year conflict. Vatican Insider discusses this with cardinal Robert Sarah who will turn 69 this coming 15 June. Cardinal Sarah is President of Cor Unum and Archbishop Emeritus of Conakry.
At the start of his pilgrimage to the Holy Land, when he was in Amman, Pope Francis asked for negotiations in Syria to reopen. What is the current situation like?
“First of all we should thank the Pope for bringing the Syrian question to the fore again during his visit to the Holy Land. The situation is still very serious: the war continues, to the indifference of the international community and peace negotiations have come to a standstill. According to the information we have at our disposal, there are about 140 thousand victims, more than 9 million people in need of healthcare and 60% of hospitals have been destroyed or are not fit for use. There are more than 2 million Syrian refugees, most of whom are living in countries in the Middle Eastern and Mediterranean region. 52% of these refugees are children and young people under the age of 17. Then there are 6 million internally displaced persons. It is a humanitarian catastrophe.”
Do you have any news regarding the whereabouts of Fr. Dall’Oglio?
“Unfortunately not, no official news. I am concerned about the revelations made by the press in recent days and I pray that they prove to be false and that Fr. Dall’Oglio will soon be able to return to his loved ones.”
What if the Holy See’s position regarding the Syrian conflict?
“The Holy See wants the parties involved in the conflict to allow the deployment of humanitarian aid efforts immediately and to put an end to hostilities: the goal has to be an agreement for lasting peace. We believe the country’s territorial integrity must be guaranteed. In tomorrow’s Syria there needs to be space for everyone, including Christian communities and all other minority communitites.”
What should the international community do in your opinion?
“For starters it should wake up from the slumber it has fallen into. It is bizarre that a missile falling on a militant post makes headlines more than the news about a population that is dying of hunger and poverty. Selfishness needs to be put aside and efforts need to be made to ensure a return to negotiations. Geneva 2 cannot mark the failure of the peace strategy: the courage needs to be found to take joint action, particularly among the big powers such as the US and Russia and then the Middle Eastern countries involved in the conflict. It doesn’t seem right to plan to arm or train combatants whilst at the same time looking for ways in which to achieve peace.”
Cor Unum has organised a coordination meeting for agencies working in the context of the Syrian crisis. Why? What will be the main issues the meeting will focus on?
“We felt there was a need – highlighted by the Catholic organizations whose work is centered around the Syrian crisis - to look for new forms of coordination between them and with the Holy See. The 30 May meeting which will be attended by 25 agencies operating in Syria and neighbouring countries will give us the chance to weigh up everything that has been done already and pinpoint emergencies and priorities for the future. For example: is it possible to create a greater synergy between the work of local bishops and the planning work of agencies? How to deal with the educational and employment emergency that a large part of the Syrian population is experiencing? I should remind everyone that this meeting continues on from the one that was held in June last year. That meeting led to the establishment of the first office for the coordination of information in Beirut. Its work will be evaluated and appraised during the course of the meeting.
What does the Pontifical Council Cor Unum do for Syria?
“Cor Unum’s work combines material assistance ( the building of schools, hospitals, houses and the supply of foodstuffs) with spiritual guidance and the ideal of Catholic organisations. We promote coordination between those operating in the field and in many cases we carry out development projects together with institutional and private partners. A health mission for young Syrian refugees in Lebanon, carried out in association with Rome’s Bambino Gesù hospital, Caritas Lebanon and external sponsors such as the Fondazione Raoul Follereau, has allowed us to help more than 4 thousand children. According to UNICEF, there are more than 5 million children who urgently need help: 10 thousand apparently died in the war, 1, 2 million are refugees in neighbouring countries and about 3 million children do not go to school.”
And what concrete actions is the Church taking?
“The Church has been following the developments in the Syrian crisis from the start, both diplomatic and humanitarian developments. It has allocated more than 80 million dollars for humanitarian projects in different sectors, for example assistance to children and the elderly, food, the rebuilding of residence complexes and churches and education. There are more than 62 institutions operating on the ground and over 42 Catholic bodies have financed these projects. Almost 18 million dollars have been invested in the educational field for example, to rebuild schools and guarantee children’s right to study or to promote training courses. This has helped more than 310 thousand young people and help also reached refugees in neighbouring States: Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey, Cyprus, Egypt, Iraq and Armenia. But there is still a great deal left to do.”
What is the situation of Christian communities? Christianity risks disappearing from countries where it has been present since the apostolic times. What is the Church asking for?
“It would be a scandal if Christianity ceased to exist in the place where Jesus was born and began preaching. The Church was born in the Middle East and Christian communities have proven to be useful instruments for reconciliation. As Pope Francis said in Amman they “contribu[te] to the common good of the society of which they are fully a part.” I do not think it is in any one’s interests to suffocate the prospects for peace which they can offer. So the Church is asking for everyone to take this incredibly serious fact on board: we cannot always wait for a church to be destroyed or a cleric killed to speak about it. If the peace process takes off again, as we hope it will, we will need to guarantee the presence of all communities in a new Syria. And in this context, we believe that the country’s territorial integrity must be defended.”
