About 40 people passionate about human rights braved freezing cold winds to wave signs at passing motorists on Grand Avenue West in Chatham Tuesday afternoon.Their aim was to draw public attention to the treatment of a Jewish group who recently settled in the area.Rally organizer, Dave Formosa, said he arranged the event through a Facebook group after learning rumours that members of the orthodox Lev Tahor community were being shunned and even spat on."I haven't picked a side. Whether allegations (of Quebec child-welfare authorities) are proven innocent or guilty, everyone is entitled to human rights," Formosa told The Chatham Daily News during the peace rally.About 200 members of Lev Tahor, whose name means "pure heart" in Hebrew fled their homes in Quebec in the middle of a November night amidst allegations — not proven in court — of child abuse and neglect.Community leaders have said they left Quebec in search of a better place to raise their children according to their own religious beliefs.An Ontario judge ruled 13 children named in a court order be sent back to Quebec.Rally member Nathan Koning, 31, of Chatham said he sympathized with the Jewish group."Everyone should have the freedom to live their beliefs," Koning said."There is too much hatred in this world already," Koning's wife Alicja Trozynska, 27, chimed in.The couple held signs with their 17-month-old son Jonathan to show their support of Lev Tahor.
"I actually argued with a guy to know the facts when he called them pedophiles," Koning said."If I had to be in their shoes and knew my children were going to be taken away, I would drop everything and run too," he added.Clifford Quenneville, 66, and Susan Peltier, 61, of Calvary Community Church in Tilbury held an Israeli flag to show their support."We're here to build relationships," Quenneville said.Another woman travelled from Corunna to join the rally."Just because people look different, dress differently, is no reason to turn your back on them," said Lisa Smith.The 47-year-old plans to marry a Jamaican next year."I see it (being shunned in public)a lot," Smith said. "I'm told, 'Oh, you're one of them.'"Retta Cadotte, 32, of Chatham called the Lev Tahor "a complicated story.""The parents clearly love their children ... they haven't been given a chance to prove themselves," Cadotte said.Formosa said he visited the Lev Tahor community, north of Chatham, on several occasions over the last month and was always received with a warm welcome.
"I've spent 18 to 20 hours with them and saw kids running around happy," Formosa said."If we've influenced just one person today, a difference has been made."Lev Tahor spokesperson Uriel Goldman told The Daily News his community was humbled by the rally."We thanked them and hopefully people realize ... the issues here are human rights and religious rights," Goldman said.While the rally continued lawyers for the 13 children and local child-welfare agencies were in Chatham court to set March 5 to hear legal arguments for and against sending the children into care in Quebec.vicki.gough@sunmedia.ca

Sir: This letter is in response to various articles in your paper concerning the Jewish group, Lev Tahor.
Ronald Reagan, the 40th president of the United States once said, “The nine most terrifying words in the English language are; I’m from the government, and I’m here to help.” One can fully appreciate the weight of these words when reflecting on the 13 children of the Lev Tahor, ordered to be removed from their homes by the Quebec court.This case has become increasingly troubling to this writer, as I follow the story through various media. The extreme action by Quebec authorities is based on unproven allegations of abuse and a sub-standard education.Since when do we Canadians allow bureaucrats to separate children from their parents, solely on rumours and hearsay? The whole Lev Tahor story becomes more puzzling as one reads reports from third party officials that government and courts may have ulterior motives behind their actions. (See Chatham Daily News Feb. 1, 2014, ‘A Peek inside a Persecution Complex’).Furthermore, on Feb. 19 your paper reported that Quebec’s largest protestant group, representing 1,000 churches and 400,000 people, was told not to show up at the legislature hearings into the so-called charter of Quebec Values. The spokesman for the group, Glenn Smith, said the group wasn’t given a reason, but suspects that the PQ didn’t need to hear another dissenting voice (let alone 400,000 dissenting voices!). This charter deals with the secularization of Quebec culture, the most contentious aspect of the Charter being a band on conspicuous religious symbols in public service.It is well understood that this Charter has solid Quebec Francophone support, and consequently, stands against certain minority religious groups, particularly the Lev Tahor.
In closing, the Lev Tahor has chosen our community as a place of refuge.I believe it is therefore incumbent on us to provide them with a safe and secure haven, the same as we ourselves enjoy in this good city.
Perhaps more importantly, we should not leave them alone in their present distress, but seek to help and support them in whichever way we can.Charlie Van Kesteren, Chatham

Brutal cold grips the Prairie provinces; Saskatchewan braces for wind chills of -50

From the eastern slopes of the Rockies to shores of Lake Superior, the polar vortex is once again plunging Canadians into a deep freeze this week.After enjoying a brief respite along with the rest of Canada last week, the winter chills are back across the Prairie provinces and northwestern Ontario. Although the cold has been creeping in over the past few days, they reached an extreme on Monday morning as temperatures reached well into the -30s Celsius and the winds pushed those extremes even further, making it feel like it was in the -40s, and even a hair's-breadth away from -50 in some places. Although daily highs managed to reach around -20 C yesterday afternoon, providing a little bit of relief for winter-weary residents, it's another dip into the deep-freeze this morning thanks to the cold and wind.Wind chill warnings put into effect over the past couple of days are still in effect across southern Saskatchewan and southwestern Manitoba, advising of wind chills as low as -45 C this morning. Although these conditions are part-and-parcel with living in the Prairies, these warnings are a useful reminder that this extreme combination of cold and wind can freeze skin in less than five minutes and raise the risk of hypothermia for anyone who is out in this weather for any length of time.This pattern of cold days and frigid nights is set to play out every day for the rest of the week, at least for Saskatchewan, Manitoba and northern Ontario. While the cold persists further east, southern Alberta should be seeing a bit of a warm-spell over the next couple of days, actually pushing temperatures up to around the freezing mark around Calgary for Wednesday and into the negative single-digits for communities further north.However, that isn't set to last. Moving into the weekend, this blast of frigid weather is promising to deepen even further, pushing over Alberta and spreading into southern Ontario and Quebec as well. The 'core' of this extreme cold is expected through Saskatchewan, as temperatures on Saturday morning could dip as low as -40 C, and wind chills could drive down into the -50s. With this cold spreading out, and pushing what's already impacting the prairies farther to the east, this weekend is setting up to possibly be one of the coldest so far this season for many Canadians.

Sun blasts out most powerful solar flare so far of 2014

The massive sunspot cluster that's been wowing us over the past month isn't done just yet. It peeked around the eastern limb of the sun on Monday night and blasted out a powerful X4.9-class flare — the most powerful so far this year.The solar flare was captured by NASA's Earth-orbiting Solar Dynamics Observatory just before 8 p.m. EST as it crackled and exploded, releasing an intense stream of X-rays and a bright coronal mass ejection (CME):The strobing and strange x-shaped images in the video are the satellite's sensors reacting to the intensity of the explosion. The sensitive instruments are sometimes temporarily overloaded by incoming signals, and this affects the results we see here on Earth when the images are downloaded.This is the third pass around the sun for this active region.It formed in January and was called AR 1944 when it blasted out the first X-class flare of the year. Then on its second pass, when it was renamed AR 1967, we managed to capture it letting off an M-class flare just after the moon passed over SDO's view of the sun, forming a 'hidden' eclipse (not visible from anywhere on Earth). When the cluster reached the middle of the face of the sun, it had reached the size of the planet Jupiter, and was clearly visible in photographs of the sun at sunset.This latest pass is just starting and it's already given us a taste of what it's capable of with this X-class flare. The CME released from it could ramp up aurora activity in the days to come, but it will be interesting to see what this cluster does before it disappears around the sun's western limb in a week or so.

Quebec authorities are trying to commit “genocide” on members of Lev Tahor, the group’s leader says in a video released Friday.Grand Rabbi Shlomo Helbrans says in the 18-minute video that his fundamentalist Jewish sect had no choice but to move from Ste-Agathe to Chatham late last year in order to avoid a Quebec judge’s ruling to remove 14 children from two Lev Tahor families.“What choice do we have? We came to Ontario,” said Helbrans, who referred to Nazi persecution and claimed Quebec authorities “want to destroy us, to obliterate us… They want to commit a genocide.”Helbrans said his group tried to work with children’s aid workers in Quebec, as well as police and the courts, but that no one would listen to Lev Tahor members.“This place was full with joyful children, playing with such happiness and charm, with such purity and innocence,” Helbrans said in the video, which appears to have been made in front of a few followers shortly before sunset on Feb. 6. “The children would never tease or harm anyone. No one has ever harmed the children, at least not from our community.”Helbrans, who was among the last of more than 200 Lev Tahor community members to leave Ste-Agathe,  said the group’s “persecution” originally started with Israeli authorities. The rabbi said the Isreali government refuses to accept Lev Tahor’s stand against Zionism. He said his group practices a purer interpretation of the Torah.“The Creator knows the truth, that we have not committed in the village a single crime,” Helbrans said. “We did not break any Canadian or Quebec law.”
Lev Tahor’s move to Ontario has provided the group a reprieve. But they still face legal troubles. Israel is a country of migration, this phenomena was recorded in biblical times when the first mention of migrating birds was of Jeremiah describing to his followers lines of cranes and storks across the skies.

In the autumn more than 500 million birds make there way from Europe to Africa and Asia and back again in the spring. Autumn migration begins about mid June at this time the first Waders appears, autumn migration ends in the middle of December with its peak time being mid August to mid November. Spring migration is from the middle of January at witch time the common Whitethroat and Great Spotted Cuckoo can be seen on there way north. The spring migration ends mid June. Peak spring migration is from the beginning of March to mid May, so you could say Israel has a continual migration all year round! The reason for this constant migration sequence is that Israel is located in between Europe and Africa and the birds that migrate coming from an amazing variety of climates and habitats and from a huge area .There are two different types of flight during migration. The first is active, when the bird uses its wings in a continual flapping motion. The second is passive, which is used by the raptors who glide. This group also includes storks, pelicans and Common Cranes that combine both migration flight styles. Song birds and other birds that use active flight prefer to fly at night using the day light to feed and rest. The bigger birds which use soaring and gliding, are carried by the currents of warm air Thermals that only exist during the day. The migration patterns of raptors are governed by two major routes of migration, a kind of celestial highway over Israel. White Pelican, Lesser spooted Eagle can be seen mainly on the western routes. Honey Buzzards and Steepe Buzzards prefer the eastern routes over the Rift valley .

In case you didn’t know (or perhaps you have such acute ornithophobia that you’ve blocked it out), Israel–at the crossroads of three continents–boasts one of the largest bird migrations IN THE WORLD.

Each year, one billion birds soar above this tiny stretch of ancient land, where Africa, Europe and Asia meet. Second only to Panama, this geographical intersection is one of the world’s largest bird migration paths, with more than 540 species traversing the airspace each autumn and spring.Dr Yossi Lesham, director of Israel’s International Centre for the Study of Bird Migration, explained that per square mile, the country has one of the highest concentrations of bird traffic in the world. “In one morning, we can see maybe 10,000 eagles. Just in one morning,” he said.In other words, bird migration in the Levant would make Alfred Hitchcock blush.For a spectacular read on birding, I’d highly recommend our own Jonathan Rosen’s book The Life of SkiesWhere birds know no borders, which looks at the meaning of observing migrations, which are, in essence, one of the most poignant markers of time.

debkafile’s military sources report that units of the Russian forces which formed a steel ring around the Olympic Winter Games that ended in Sochi Sunday were flown and shipped Monday, Feb. 24 to Russian bases at the Ukrainian Crimean port of Sevastopol, as Moscow refused to recognize the legitimacy of the new authorities in Kiev. Giant Russian Air Force transports and rapid deployment forces were placed on alert at the Rostov on-Don base east of the predominantly Russian-speaking southeastern Ukrainian town of Donetsk.Russian military movements were also sighted near Belgorod, a Russian town 40 kilometers from the Ukraine border and north of its second largest town of Kharkov. There, too, most of the inhabitants are Russian speaking with a strong affinity to Moscow – in contrast to their European-oriented compatriots in the capital, Kiev.These military movements were accompanied by sharp Russian rhetoric in Moscow’s first direct response to the tumult in Kiev and ouster of the pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych, against whom Kiev police Monday issued a warrant for mass murder. Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said Monday: “Today I see no legitimate Ukrainian partners for a dialogue. If people crossing Kyiv in black masks and Kalashnikov rifles are considered a government, it will be difficult for us to work with such a government," he said, calling it “the result of a mutiny.” The prime minister spoke of a “real threat to our interests, and to our citizens’ lives and health.” With these comments, the Russian leader laid down a pretext for Russian military intervention in Ukraine. Iran has signed a deal to sell Iraq arms and ammunition worth $195m, according to documents seen by Reuters news agency - a move that would break a UN embargo on weapons sales by Iran.The agreement was reached at the end of November, the documents showed, just weeks after Nouri al-Maliki, Iraq's prime minister, returned from Washington, where he lobbied the Obama administration for extra weapons to fight armed rebels.The official documents seen by Reuters showed that six of eight contracts were signed with Iran's Defence Industries Organisation to supply Iraq with light and medium arms, mortar launchers, ammunition for tanks as well as artillery and mortars.A final two contracts were agreed to with the state-owned Iran Electronic Industries for night vision goggles, communications equipment and mortar guiding devices.One of the contracts includes equipment to protect against chemical agents.The Obama administration pressed the Iraqi government on Monday to explain the media reports."We've certainly seen those reports. If true, this would raise serious concerns," Jen Psaki, State Department spokeswoman, said. She said that "any transfer of arms from Iran to a third country is in direct violation" of the UN embargo. "We are seeking clarification on this matter from the government of Iraq and to ensure that Iraqi officials understand the limits that international law places on arms trade with Iran," Psaki said.Some in Washington are nervous about providing sensitive US military equipment to a country they worry is becoming too close to Iran. Israeli jets reportedly strike arms shipment en route to Hezbollah

Israel bombarded a Hezbollah stronghold on the Lebanon-Syria border twice on Monday night, killing several Hezbollah operatives, Lebanese and other Arab media reported.Lebanon’s Daily Star reported overnight Monday that the strikes targeted a weapons shipment meant for Hezbollah. Citing unconfirmed reports, Al Arabiya said the strikes were on a moving convoy carrying ballistic missiles from Syria to Lebanon, to be put to use by the Shi’ite organization.The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the target was a Hezbollah “missile base.”“Two Israeli raids hit a Hezbollah target on the border of Lebanon and Syria,” a Lebanese security source told AFP earlier Monday.Residents of Nabi Sheet, on the Lebanese side of the border, told AFP they saw flare bombs light up the sky ahead of the raids, which shook their houses.

However, Jaafar al-Musawi, head of Nabi Sheet Municipality, told Lebanon’s Al-Jadeed TV there was no airstrike on the town. “We heard warplanes followed by explosions, it could be along the border with Syria,” he said.Residents in neighboring areas said they heard planes flying low before the raids.Late Monday, Lebanese media reported two Israeli air raids on targets in the Bekaa Valley, a known Hezbollah stronghold bordering Syria.A correspondent for the Lebanese state news agency in Baalbek reported intensive Israeli flights “at very low altitude” over the mountains.Nabi Sheet itself is a bastion of Hezbollah, which is helping the Syrian regime battle insurgents. The Shi’ite group has a suspected weapons store and training camp there.The Hezbollah television station Al-Manar said there had been “no raid on Lebanese territory,” reporting only the “strong presence of enemy planes over the area north of Bekaa” in eastern Lebanon.

A Lebanese army spokesman said they had no indication of any airstrikes in the area, but were investigating the reports.The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights activist group said Israeli warplanes bombed a rocket launcher for Hezbollah fighters near the villages of Janta and Yahfoufa along the border. Janta lies along a known smuggling route for arms between Syria and Lebanon, the Daily Star reported. According to a 2012 report, Hezbollah built a training facility at Janta “which includes a suspected driver training course, a 100-meter firing range and a possible urban terrain assault course.”

There was no independent confirmation of the reports.

An officer in the IDF’s Northern Command told Reuters that “We have known for some time that there are efforts to move serious weaponry from Syria to Lebanon,” but would not comment on Monday night’s reports.Airstrikes on Syrian arms shipments to its ally Hezbollah have been attributed to Israel in the past few years. In no mood for fight, Hezbollah downplays reported Israeli strike

With hands full in Syria, the Lebanese Shiite group is trying to convince the public that the incident is not worth response

The morning after Israeli planes reportedly attacked Hezbollah targets on the Lebanon-Syria border, many in Israel’s defense community are wondering how the Shiite terror group will respond, if it does so at all.

Hezbollah has so far offered few clues, downplaying or ignoring the reports of multiple strikes on a missile shipment or missile base in the Baalbek region.On Tuesday morning, Hezbollah’s al-Manar channel opened its news broadcast with clashes on the Temple Mount between Palestinians and Israeli police (or “forces of the Zionist enemy” in their terminology).The most overt reference on the al-Manar website to the Israeli attack was that “senior security officials did not confirm that there was an attack.”Earlier, the network said there had been “no raid on Lebanese territory,” reporting only the “strong presence of enemy planes over the area north of Bekaa” in eastern Lebanon.The al-Mayadeen channel, considered close to Hezbollah, also buried news of the attack late Monday. Its headline emphasized that “there were no injuries or damage” in the attack, contradicting reports of Hezbollah casualties in al-Arabaiya. The report seemed to telegraph to the Lebanese public how inconsequential the attack was.This is how Hezbollah’s media operates. The late hour of the incident and its location, in a mountainous area right on the border, gave Hezbollah room to smudge the details of what exactly happened in the attack, and avoid the question many people are asking this morning in Lebanon: did the missiles strike a target inside Lebanon or not? Hezbollah, though, may be trapped by the wide availability of other, independent news sources. Minutes after the strike, independent Lebanese media were already reporting that the missiles fired from IAF jets hit inside Lebanon.Hezbollah, which has always boasted about being the defender of Lebanon, is trying to downplay the attack in a bid to avoid an ill-timed confrontation with Israel.The Lebanese public understands by now that Hezbollah is up to its neck in the war in Syria. It sends its elite forces and invests most of its military efforts there, making an additional conflict against Israel unnecessary and highly risky. In addition, Hezbollah only recently joined the new unity government in Lebanon, and received several very senior portfolios.Despite the radio silence early Tuesday, the organization will not want to let this attack go unpunished forever. The laundry list of incidents it needs to respond to is only getting longer: the assassination of Hassan Laqis, strikes in Syria, and of the course the hit on Imad Mughniyeh in 2008.It’s likely that Hezbollah will keep the Lebanese-Israeli front quiet, but that doesn’t mean the group will sit on its haunches. A string of attempted attacks in 2012, including the deadly bus bombing in Burgas, Bulgaria, show the group could seek revenge by planning attacks on Israeli and Jewish targets abroad.

Hezbollah would like to do the same thing, but doesn’t know how to, the report lamented.According to the program, the Jews “felt rejected by real American society,” so they “tried to change society’s opinions of them by inventing cinematic characters that would serve as role models.”While some of the characters were overtly Jewish, others were concealed as superheroes and other classic Hollywood protagonists, camouflaging the Jewish attempt to take over American and global culture.“That’s when it all began,” said the narrator of the program. “Everybody wanted to be like Superman, the hero from outer space who could not fit into society as Superman, so he invented a character that was better suited for American society — the feeble, bespectacled Clark Kent.”The program cited an “expert” described as a “university professor and international photographer,” Farroukh Majidi, as saying, ”If you hit the heart of somebody, the result is short-term. But if you hit his brain, then the result is long-term.”Majidi was referring to what the program described as the Jews’ attempts to use heroic characters to generate influence.“They try to make you believe that what you think is coming out of you, yourself,” Majidi said.The narrator then explained that Superman was “invented” by Joe Shuster, a Jew, to “deal with” whoever challenged the Jewish world view.“Hollywood is a Jewish invention that changed the way Americans view America, and created dreams, rather than reality. Touting strong friendship, Germany’s Merkel lands in Israel

Joint government meeting to celebrate 50 years of ties, but overshadowed by German criticism of settlement construction as ‘disruptive’ to peace process

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and her cabinet landed Monday at Ben Gurion Airport for a two-day stay which will include a joint meeting of the two governments.Netanyahu greeted Merkel in Jerusalem Monday night at a brief press conference. The two were scheduled to meet at the Prime Minister’s Residence afterward for a working dinner.“We have come here with almost the whole of our new government and we wanted to show you in this way that this is indeed a very strong friendship,” Merkel said in German and relayed in English through a translator.Merkel said Germany has been working with Israel “shoulder to shoulder” over the past five decades “to secure the future of the state of Israel.” She said that “part and parcel of the security of Israel is the two state solution…a Jewish state of Israel and alongside it a Palestinian state.”Standing at her side Netanyahu said the U.S mediated peace talks, as well as international efforts to quell Iran’s nuclear program, would figure prominently in his meetings with Merkel.Germany also belongs to a group of nations currently negotiating with Iran, Israel’s arch foe and a particular nemesis for Netanyahu.“I would like to discuss ways to prevent Iran from getting nuclear weapons capability. 12 And seven months shall the house of Israel be burying of them, that they may cleanse the land.(OF ISRAEL)
13 Yea, all the people of the land (OF ISRAEL) shall bury them; and it shall be to them a renown the day that I (GOD-JESUS) shall be glorified, saith the Lord GOD.
14 And they shall sever out men of continual employment,(NUCLEAR ATOMIC BOMB EXPERTS) passing through the land to bury with the passengers those that remain upon the face of the earth, to cleanse it: after the end of seven months shall they search.
15 And the passengers that pass through the land, when any seeth a man’s bone, then shall he set up a sign by it,(WON'T TOUCH IT) till the buriers have buried it (PROPERLY) in the valley of Hamongog.(RUSSIA/ARAB/MUSLIMS NEW BURIEL SITE)(EAST OF THE DEAD SEA IN THE JORDAN VALLEY)

11  Therefore, as I live, saith the Lord GOD, I will even do according to thine anger, and according to thine envy which thou hast used out of thy hatred against them; and I will make myself known among them, when I have judged thee.
12  And thou shalt know that I am the LORD, and that I have heard all thy blasphemies which thou hast spoken against the mountains of Israel, saying, They are laid desolate, they are given us to consume.
13  Thus with your mouth ye have boasted against me, and have multiplied your words against me: I have heard them.
14  Thus saith the Lord GOD; When the whole earth rejoiceth, I will make thee desolate.(ARAB,MUSLIMS)
15  As thou didst rejoice at the inheritance of the house of Israel, because it was desolate, so will I do unto thee: thou shalt be desolate, O mount Seir,(ARABS) and all Idumea,(ARAB,MUSLIMS) even all of it: and they shall know that I am the LORD.

ISAIAH 17:1,11-14
1 The burden of Damascus. Behold, Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap.
11  In the day shalt thou make thy plant to grow, and in the morning shalt thou make thy seed to flourish: but the harvest shall be a heap in the day of grief and of desperate sorrow.

Police reportedly eavesdropped on thousands of cabinet ministers, journalists, and spy chief for three years

ANKARA — Turkish police have eavesdropped on thousands of people including Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, as well as cabinet ministers, the country’s spy chief and journalists, local newspapers reported on Monday.Associates of US-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen in the police and the judiciary have tapped the phones of Erdogan as well as politicians and businessmen for three years, pro-government dailies Yenisafak and Star claimed.Erdogan has accused rivals in the influential Gulen group of acting as a “state within a state” seeking to topple his government by instigating a high-level corruption investigation against close allies.Classified documents revealing the surveillance were discovered by new prosecutors appointed after a mass purge of the police and prosecution service in the wake of the corruption probe launched in December, the press reports said.The Star reported that so-called Gulenists had wiretapped more than 7,000 people, as well as the headquarters of the opposition Republic People’s Party, since 2011 on the pretext of trying to uncover terrorism plots.Energy Minister Taner Yildiz said that he had been wiretapped, adding: “This is no longer a problem just for the (ruling) AK Party.”The corruption scandal has thrown up one of the most serious challenges to Erdogan’s 11 years in power ahead of key local elections in March.The mass eavesdropping reports come as parliament began debating a new bill aimed at giving the intelligence agency a free hand in carrying out undercover missions and surveillance at home and abroad — without the need for a court order.Erdogan has come under fire for what critics see as increasingly authoritarian policies, including curbs on the judiciary and the Internet.
