STORMS HURRICANES-TORNADOES

LUKE 21:25-26
25 And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity;(MASS CONFUSION) the sea and the waves roaring;(FIERCE WINDS)
26 Men’s hearts failing them for fear,(TORNADOES,HURRICANES,STORMS) and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth:(DESTRUCTION) for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.(FROM QUAKES,NUKES ETC)

THE FIRST JUDGEMENT OF THE EARTH STARTED WITH WATER-IT ONLY MAKES SENSE THE LAST GENERATION WILL BE HAVING FLOODING
GENESIS 7:6-12
6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.
8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,
9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.
10 And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.
GOD PROMISED BY A RAINBOW-THE EARTH WOULD NEVER BE DESTROYED TOTALLY WITH A FLOOD AGAIN.BUT FLOODIING IS A SIGN OF JUDGEMENT.

Rescues accelerate as floodwater inundates Colo.

The Summit County Rescue team works to save Suzanne Sophocles,t center, from her severely flooded home Friday, Sept. 13, 2013 in Boulder, Colo. By truck and helicopter, thousands of people stranded by floodwaters came down from the Colorado Rockies on Friday, two days after seemingly endless rain turned normally scenic rivers and creeks into coffee-colored rapids that wrecked scores of roads and wiped out neighborhoods. LYONS, Colo. (AP) — By air and by land, the rescue of hundreds of Coloradoans stranded by epic mountain flooding was accelerating as food and water supplies ran low, while thousands more were driven from their homes on the plains as debris-filled rivers became muddy seas inundating towns and farms miles from the Rockies. For the first time since the harrowing mountain floods began Wednesday, Colorado got its first broad view of the devastation — and the reality of what is becoming a long-term disaster is setting in. The flooding has affected parts of a 4,500-square-mile area, almost the size of Connecticut.National Guard choppers were evacuating 295 people — plus pets — from the mountain hamlet of Jamestown, which was isolated by flooding that scoured the canyon the town sits in.Helicopters continued to fly in and out late into the night. National Guard truck convoys to rescue residents of the town of Lyons to the northeast resumed Saturday morning, with the airlifts expected to follow, Lt. Skye Robinson said. The outlook for anyone who'd rather stay is weeks without power, cellphone service, water or sewer."Essentially, what they were threatening us with is, 'If you stay here, you may be here for a month,'" said 79-year-old Dean Hollenbaugh, who was evacuated by Chinook helicopter from Jamestown, northwest of Boulder. For those awaiting an airlift, Guardsmen dropped food, water and other supplies in Jamestown and other small towns in the winding, narrow canyons that dot the Rocky Mountain foothills.Thousands of evacuees sought shelter in cities that were nearly surrounded by raging rivers spilling over their banks. One was Mary Hemme, 62, who displayed a pair of purple socks as she sat outside the Lifebridge Christian Church in Longmont. They're a memento of the more than 30 hours she spent in an elementary school in the flood-stricken mountain town of Lyons. Many evacuees — eventually rescued by National Guard trucks — got socks because most of them had wet feet, Hemme said. She recalled the sirens blared at 2:30 a.m. Wednesday."Mary we have to go, this place is flooding," she recalled her friend Kristen Vincent saying as they clambered out of a trailer."And we stepped out of the trailer, onto the ground where the cars were parked, and it already like this, almost to our knees," she said. "It wasn't just sitting there. It was rushing at us."Soon the trailer, like others in the park where she was staying, was submerged.Hemme said she walked up at hill a daybreak and surveyed the trailer park.
"The most terrifying thing was when I climbed up on that cliff and looked down. It was the meanest, most — I mean, no wonder it carries cars like toys," Hemme said. "I was so afraid that I was going to die, that water came so fast."The dayslong rush of water from higher ground has killed four people and turned towns on Colorado's expansive eastern plains into muddy swamps. Crews used inflatable boats to rescue families and pets from stranded farmhouses. Some evacuees on horseback had to be escorted to safe ground.Boulder County officials said Friday night that the number of people unaccounted for had risen to 172, according to local television and newspaper reports. The officials said earlier that the unaccounted for figure doesn't necessarily represent missing people."It means we haven't heard back from them," county spokesman James Burrus said. The city of Boulder reported late Friday that the rushing waters had caused "a significant breach in its main wastewater pipeline" to the treatment plant, but officials said it would not affect drinking water.
Near Greeley, some 35 miles east of the foothills, broad swaths of farmland had become lakes, and hundreds of roads were closed or damaged by floodwaters. A 70-mile stretch of Interstate 25 was closed from Denver to the Wyoming line.Rocky Mountain National Park closed Friday, its visitors forced to leave via the 60-mile Trail Ridge Road to the west side of the Rockies. It will be weeks, if not months, before a semblance of normalcy returns to Lyons, a gateway community to the park. The town, surrounded by sandstone cliffs whose color was reflected in the raging St. Vrain River, consisted of six islands Friday as residents barbecued their food before it spoiled. Several people set up a tent camp on a hill. Some 2,500 residents were being evacuated from Lyons, but Hilary Clark was left walking around her neighborhood Friday. Two bridges that led into the area were washed away. Unlike other parts of Lyons that had been reached by the National Guard in high clearance trucks, no such help had arrived for Clark."We're surviving on what we got," she said. "Some of us have ponds in our backyard and we're using that water and boiling it."Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle said recovery would be long and expensive — similar to wildfires the state is more familiar with."Please be patient. This is an unprecedented event," Pelle said.___Neary reported from Longmont. Associated Press writers David Martin in Boulder, Mead Gruver in Fort Collins, and Colleen Slevin and Thomas Peipert in Denver contributed to this report.

Four Chinese ships entered waters around islands at the centre of a bitter dispute with Japan on Saturday with no sign of a compromise seen between Asia's two largest powers. The four Chinese coastguard vessels sailed into the 12-nautical-mile territorial waters around the Tokyo-controlled Senkaku islands -- which Beijing calls the Diaoyus -- Saturday morning, the Japanese coastguard said. They had all left the waters more than four hours later and were in contiguous waters just outside of the 12-nautical-mile band Saturday afternoon, the Japanese guards said. The moves came after the first anniversary Wednesday of Tokyo's nationalisation of part of the chain. On the eve of the anniversary, a flotilla of eight Chinese ships entered the territorial band of waters.Often-testy ties have soured dramatically over the last 12 months, with frequent confrontations between official ships from both sides.Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Thursday vowed to beef up his country's defence capability amid the row with China.Japan annexed what it says were the unclaimed islands in 1895. It says China's assertion of ownership only came after the discovery of resources in the seabed at the close of the 1960s.Beijing maintains that the islands have been its territory for hundreds of years and were illegally snatched by Tokyo at the start of an acquisitive romp across Asia that culminated in World War II.

Fire rages along NJ boardwalk

SEASIDE PARK, N.J. (AP) — Hot spots could keep flaring up for days on a New Jersey shore boardwalk where a fire leveled four blocks and about 30 businesses just 10 months after the same area was devastated by Superstorm Sandy.Gov. Chris Christie said the fire was 95 percent contained by late morning Friday. He said state grants and loans could be made available to help businesses with recovery costs not covered by insurance.Christie said there were only minor injuries to responders so far. But the condition of three Seaside Park police officers who fell from a moving pickup truck at the scene Friday morning was not immediately known. Christie said two of them fell on their heads."I will not permit all the work we've done over the last 10 months to be diminished or destroyed by what happened last night," Christie said during a media briefing in Seaside Park. The fire, which broke out Thursday afternoon, zipped up four blocks of boardwalk in Seaside Park and Seaside Heights. It was driven by strong gusts and fueled by tar roofs on the pizza shops, bars, ice cream shops, an arcade and other businesses. The fire was finally stopped around 11 p.m. Thursday when officials decided to dismantle a section of the boardwalk, even though that meant moving firefighters and letting some buildings continue to burn.Images from the air showed a once-colorful area reduced to a monochromatic pile of charred dark gray rubble. Among the places wrecked was FunTown Pier, an amusement park that had not yet reopened after being damaged last October by Sandy.
Friday, firefighters were pouring thousands of gallons of water on the smoldering remnants of the fire.
About a quarter of the 400 firefighters who battled the blaze Thursday remained on the scene Friday morning, and heavy equipment was poised to move in and start poking through the rubble once firefighters extinguished the last burning pockets."There's not much left" in the affected areas, said Brian Gabriel, Ocean County's fire coordinator. "It looks like a couple of bombs went off. It's pretty much complete devastation."
Authorities began making tentative plans to rebuild the boardwalk, most of which had just been redone in time for Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial start of summer. Boardwalk merchants were numb as they pondered the second major disaster to befall them in 11 months."We just reopened June 1, went through the whole summer trying to stay open, and now this happens," said Daniel Shauger, manager of Funtown Arcade, which was one of 32 Seaside Park boardwalk businesses damaged in the fire. "We're wiped out again. It's just unimaginable."He said business was down by two-thirds this summer because of the fallout from Sandy, which filled his arcade with water and sand and ruined inventory, game machines and computers."It was just enough to survive," Shauger said. "We were really looking forward to next year. And we're still looking forward to next year."Seaside Park officials began plans Friday morning to rebuild their part of the boardwalk, at the southern end where the fire began Thursday afternoon near a frozen custard stand. Bob Martucci, the borough administrator, said it will cost $600,000 to rebuild the borough-owned boardwalk; individual businesses are privately owned and would not be included in that cost, he said.
Arson investigators began looking into the cause of the fire Thursday night and continued Friday morning, which is routine with a fire of this size. Al Della Fave, a spokesman for the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office, said there was no indication Friday that the fire appeared suspicious, though a cause had not been determined. It could have been much worse. On Thursday, as the fire pushed northward despite the frantic efforts of firefighters to contain it, Seaside Heights officials tried a Hail Mary: They ripped out a 25-foot swath of the boardwalk they had just finished rebuilding five months earlier. And they filled the void with giant sand piles — makeshift dunes designed to halt the spread of flames and save the northern portion of the boardwalk upon which the community relied for its financial survival. It worked. In much the same way as forest fire crews rip out vegetation to deprive an advancing fire of fuel, the boardwalk gambit succeeded in halting the fire's extension any farther into Seaside Heights."That appears to have done the trick," Seaside Park Mayor Robert Matthies said.Seaside Park Councilwoman Nancy Koury said the fire caused several million dollars' worth of damage.___Wayne Parry can be reached at http://twitter.com/WayneParryAC

US-Russia reach agreement on Syria weapons

GENEVA (AP) — U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reached agreement Saturday on a framework for Syria to destroy all of its chemical weapons, and said they would seek a U.N. Security Council resolution that could authorize sanctions — short of military action — if Syrian President Bashar Assad's government fails to comply. The deal announced by the diplomats on the third day of intense negotiations in Geneva includes what Kerry called "a shared assessment" of Syria's weapons stockpile, and a timetable and measures for Assad's government to comply."The world will now expect the Assad regime to live up to its public commitment," Kerry told a packed news conference in the Intercontinental Hotel in Geneva, where he has been staying and the negotiations were conducted since Thursday night. "There can be no games, no room for avoidance, or anything less than full compliance by the Assad regime."The deal calls for international inspectors to be on the ground in Syria by November and to complete their initial work by the end of that month. All of Syria's chemical weapons stocks, material and equipment would have to be destroyed or removed by mid-2014.Administration officials had said that President Barack Obama was open to a Security Council resolution that did not include military force as a punishment if Assad doesn't follow through on promises regarding the weapons. While Russia would be all but certain to veto any measure with such a penalty, Obama's willingness to concede the point — after threatening a U.S.-led military strike with or without approval by the U.S. Congress — provided a step forward."I have no doubt that the combination of the threat of force and the willingness to pursue diplomacy helped to bring us to this moment," Kerry said."Providing this framework is fully implemented, it can end the threat these weapons pose, not only to the Syrian people, but also to their neighbors, to the region, and because of the threat of proliferation, this framework can provide greater protection and security to the world," he said. But the stakes have been especially high in Geneva, because the negotiations between the United States and Russia on securing Syria's chemical weapons also are considered key to breaking the international stalemate that has so far blocked a resumption of peace talks to end the Syrian civil war, now in its third year."We have committed to a standard that says, verify and verify," Kerry said.Among the highlights of the agreement is that the U.S. and Russia would agree to work together on a new, binding Security Council resolution that would ensure verification of the agreement to secure and destroy Syria's chemical weapons stocks and remove its capability to produce such weapons. The resolution would allow for punitive measures for non-compliance, but stop short of military action, if the 15-nation Security Council approves them. The U.S. and Russia are two of the five permanent Security Council members with a veto. The others are Britain, China, and France.Another major feature of the agreement is that the U.S. and Russia plan to give Syria one week, until Sept. 21, to submit "a comprehensive listing, including names, types and quantities of its chemical weapons agents, types of munitions, and local and form of storage, production, and research and development facilities."In addition, the U.S. and Russia have agreed that international inspectors should be on the ground in Syria by November and complete their initial work by the end of the month. They must be given "immediate and unfettered" access to inspect all sites.Notably, Kerry said they had agreed on grounds under which they might request a Security Council "Chapter 7" resolution at the United Nations, which is a measure that could include military and non-military sanctions. But Lavrov, who said the agreement was "based on consensus and compromise and professionalism," indicated there would be limits to using a Chapter 7 resolution, which Russia would almost certainly veto if it specifically authorized a military strike such as what President Barack Obama has threatened."Any violations of procedures ... would be looked at by the Security Council and if they are approved, the Security Council would take the required measures, concrete measures," Lavrov said."Nothing is said about the use of force or about any automatic sanctions. All violations should be approved by the Security Council," he added.Kerry also said any violations will result in "measures" from the Security Council, while Lavrov said the violations must be sent to the Security Council from the board of the chemical weapons convention before sanctions — short of the use of force — would be considered.Kerry said the pair and their teams of experts had come to agreement on the exact size of Syria's weapons stockpile, which had been a sticking point before their meetings in Geneva. But in marathon sessions into early morning hours, the U.S. and Russia succeeded in narrowing their differences.
The agreement over the Russian proposal to inventory, isolate and eventually destroy Syria's chemical weapons stocks comes as the Obama administration warned that there is a timetable for a diplomatic resolution of the weapons issue.Administration officials have said that Obama would retain the authority to order U.S. airstrikes against Syria. Obama himself said that any agreement to remove Syria's chemical weapons stockpile "needs to be verifiable and enforceable."U.N. inspectors prepared to turn in their own poison gas report this weekend. Two U.N. diplomats, speaking on condition of anonymity because the time was not yet final, said Friday night that Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was expected to brief the Security Council about the report on Monday morning.Ban said Friday that he expected "an overwhelming report" that chemical weapons were indeed used on the outskirts of Damascus on Aug. 21. Obama called for a limited military strike against Assad's forces in response, then deferred seeking congressional approval to consider the Russian proposal.Kerry and Lavrov also met Friday with U.N.-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi about the potential for a new peace conference in the Swiss city. Kerry said he, Lavrov and Brahimi agreed to meet around Sept. 28 on the sidelines of the annual U.N. General Assembly meetings in New York."We are committed to try to work together, beginning with this initiative on the chemical weapons, in hopes that those efforts could pay off and bring peace and stability to a war-torn part of the world," Kerry said.Kerry, flanked by Lavrov and Brahimi, told reporters after an hour-long meeting that the chances for a second peace conference in Geneva will require success first with the chemical weapons talks.Kerry planned to travel to Jerusalem Sunday to discuss the situation in Syria with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He will then go to Paris to see French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius and British Foreign Secretary William Hague on Monday about the Syrian war. In Paris, he will meet separately with Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal.

US: Assad must show 'concrete actions' on weapons

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says Syrian President Bashar Assad must take "concrete actions" to show he's serious about giving up his chemical weapons.Obama made his comments in his weekly radio and Internet address — which was taped Friday, before word came Saturday that U.S. and Russian diplomats had a deal on a framework for Syria to destroy all its chemical weapons.Obama blames Syria for an Aug. 21 chemical weapons attack the U.S. maintains killed more than 1,400 people. He threatened a military strike in response but put that on hold for the U.S. and Russian talks. In the Republican address, Tennessee Rep. Diane Black urged the Senate to pass a bill to prevent fraud and abuse in Obama's health care law.___Online:Obama's address: http://www.whitehouse.gov

Iran's new leader Hassan Rowhani on Friday urged Moscow to help solve Tehran's nuclear crisis as he met President Vladimir Putin for a key meeting at a security summit in Kyrgzystan."As far as the Iranian nuclear problem is concerned, we would like this problem to be solved as soon as possible within the framework of international norms," Rowhani told Putin in televised remarks translated into Russian in Bishkek."In the past Russia undertook important steps in this sphere, and right now is the best opportunity for new steps on your part," he said. The two leaders were meeting for the first time on the sidelines of a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation held in Kyrgyzstan.Rowhani said the meeting was an "opportunity to exchange opinions on sensitive regional problems, international topics and bilateral questions".Putin in turn praised Moscow's long-standing regional ally as a close neighbour in Rowhani's first meeting with a major world leader since he won June elections."We know how much in international affairs is revolving around the Iranian nuclear problem, but we in Russia know something else, too: that Iran is our neighbour, a good neighbour," Putin said."We do not choose our neighbours," he added.Putin was reportedly going to offer for Russia to build a second nuclear reactor at Iran's Bushehr nuclear power plant, according to a diplomatic source quoted by Kommersant daily on Wednesday."We have always had a large amount of cooperation, we have it now and most likely we will do in the future," Putin said.Putin was also reportedly offering the renewal of a contract to supply Iran with sophisticated S-300 air defence missile systems, after the deal was cancelled under international pressure in 2010.The diplomatic source told Kommersant that Putin would make the offer in return for Iran's withdrawing a $4 billion (3 billion euros) lawsuit that it has lodged in Geneva over the scrapping of the deal.Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov denied to Russian news agencies that the arms offer was on the table, however.Putin's meeting with Rowhani came shortly after he hosted Western powers for a G20 summit focused on Syria in Saint Petersburg last week.Moscow has cooperated with Iran on nuclear power generation despite international opposition to a programme that Western powers and Israel believe is being used as a smokescreen for building a nuclear bomb, while Iran insists it is peaceful.
Iran denies seeking or ever having sought nuclear weapons and argues that the six UN Security Council resolutions passed against it since 2006 -- four with sanctions attached -- are illegal.Russia urged the West to soften sanctions against Iran after the election of Rowhani, a centrist cleric, in June, expressing hopes for a major breakthrough in the nuclear standoff. Rowhani has pledged greater transparency in talks.

Syrian opposition: Don’t let Assad stall while he keeps on killing

Regime’s professed readiness for diplomatic solution to crisis is ‘too little, too late,’ says Syrian National Council

September 14, 2013, 1:26 am 0-The Times of Israel

BEIRUT (AP) — Syria’s main opposition group in exile was “deeply skeptical” Friday about Damascus signing an international treaty banning the production and use of chemical weapons, saying a U.N. resolution was needed to enforce compliance.Syrian President Bashar Assad told Russian TV that his government would start submitting data on its chemical weapons stockpile a month after signing the convention.
His ambassador to the United Nations said that as of Thursday, Syria had become a full member of the treaty, which requires destruction of all chemical weapons.“This gesture comes as too little, too late to save civilians from the regime’s murderous intent,” said the main Western-backed Syrian opposition group, the Syrian National Council.“It is clearly an attempt to evade international action as well as accountability in front of the Syrian people,” it said.It said the regime must not be allowed to use diplomacy “to indefinitely stall international action while it continues its policy of widespread violence against civilians.”Syria’s acceptance of a Russian proposal to relinquish its chemical weapons stockpile has — for now — averted a U.S. military strike in response to the alleged chemical weapons attack that killed hundreds near Damascus on Aug. 21.
The U.S. accuses Assad’s government of being responsible for the attack in the suburb of Ghouta, saying 1,429 people were killed; others estimated a lower death toll.Assad has denied responsibility, blaming the rebels and accusing Washington of spreading lies without evidence to justify a military strike.U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said he believes there will be “an overwhelming report” from the world body’s inspectors that chemical weapons were used in the attack, but he did not say who was responsible. Under the mandate for the inspectors, the team was to determine whether or not chemical agents were used and if so, which agent. The chief chemical weapons inspector, Ake Sellstrom, told The Associated Press that he has completed his report and will deliver it to Ban in New York this weekend.Ban also said the Assad’s regime “has committed many crimes against humanity.”“Therefore, I’m sure that there will be surely the process of accountability when everything is over,” Ban said in remarks shown on U.N. television.Fighting in the civil war continued. Activists said government troops battled for the ancient Christian village of Maaloula, northeast of the capital of Damascus; regime warplanes bombed rebel positions in the southern province of Daraa and in the eastern oil-rich province of Deir el-Zour; and both sides clashed in Barzeh, on the edge of Damascus.Russian President Vladimir Putin praised Syria’s joining of the Chemical Weapons Convention, telling an international security meeting in Kyrgyzstan that the move proved Damascus’ “serious intentions.” The summit was dominated by Russia, China and Iran, all Assad allies.Syria’s opposition said it was “deeply skeptical,” and rebel commanders accused Assad of moving the chemical weapons to make tracking them more difficult.Qassem Saadeddine, a former Syrian army colonel and spokesman for the rebels’ Supreme Military Council, said the Syrian leadership has spread its chemical weapons over several dozen locations.
Saadeddine also accused Syria of sending some of the weapons to Hezbollah in Lebanon and to Iraq — both close to the regime. He declined to give the source of his information.“The chemical weapons convention requires a state to act in good faith,” the SNC said. “Considering the regime’s actions, this is not something the Syrian people can afford to grant the regime.”France has proposed a draft resolution that demands the weapons be put under international control and dismantled. Submitted under Chapter 7 of the U.N. charter, which makes it enforceable militarily, it warns of “very serious consequences” if Syria does not comply.Russia has rejected any resolution under Chapter 7 and proposed a weaker presidential statement — a move rejected by the U.S., Britain and France.U.S. and Russian chemical weapons experts met in Geneva to haggle over the technical details. The SNC urged the U.S. to keep the threat of force on the table, saying a U.N. resolution must be enforceable under Chapter 7.U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met in Geneva with U.N.-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi to examine political developments and plot a new international conference to support the creation of a transitional government for Syria. Also Friday, Human Rights Watch accused Syrian government forces and pro-regime militias of carrying out mass killings of at least 248 people in two predominantly Sunni Muslim towns along the Mediterranean in May.The New York-based group said its report on the killings in Bayda and Banias on May 2 and 3 was based on accounts of witnesses who saw or heard government and pro-government forces detain and then kill their relatives. It said 167 people were killed in Bayda and 81 in Banias. The towns are predominantly populated by Sunni Muslims, who dominate the revolt against Assad. The towns are in Syria’s coastal area, the heartland of his Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam.“While the world’s attention is on ensuring that Syria’s government can no longer use chemical weapons against its population, we shouldn’t forget that Syrian government forces have used conventional means to slaughter civilians,” said Joe Stork, HRW’s acting Middle East director. “Survivors told us devastating stories of how their unarmed relatives were mowed down in front of them by government and pro-government forces.”
The crisis began in March 2011 as largely peaceful protests against Assad, but turned into a civil war after opposition supporters took up arms to fight a government crackdown on dissent. The fighting has taken on increasingly sectarian overtones, and more than 100,000 people have been killed.

Arabic professor distributes map without Israel, then pencils it in half-assedly

On the second day of Arabic class, San Diego State University professor distributed a map that had omitted Israel and labeled the land mass where Israel is located as “Palestinian Territories.”The professor, Ghassan Zakaria, then redistributed the exact same map after sloppily writing “Israel” and generally indicating where the country is, reports KGTV.The ABC affiliate’s unnamed sources called Zakaria’s new map of the Middle East little better than the old one in the sense that it doesn’t convey Israel’s legitimacy as a sovereign political entity accurately.Unidentified students had feared academic reprisals if they said anything about the map in class.“I don’t really believe it was the right place for dialogue,” an anonymous student told KGTV in a prior report. “It is a language class. It’s not a class about conflict.”Concerned students decided to forward the map to the local branch of a pro-Israeli group called “Stand With Us.”Representatives of the group posted the map on its Facebook page and asked members to contact the taxypayer-funded university’s Arabic program director.Zakaria has expressed regret to the class, notes KGTV. He has not issued any apology to anyone outside the class. The program director — Ghada Osman (Ph.D., Harvard), according to SDSU’s website — told KGTV that Zakaria had handed out the Israel-less map to “reflect the view of Arab-speakers in the region.”Israel is a nation roughly the size of New Jersey. It became independent in 1948. The United States officially recognized its existence in 1949. The United States does not recognize Palestine as a state. A number of other countries do recognize Palestine diplomatically.A spokesman for San Diego State issued a statement siding fairly strongly with the upset students. “While SDSU encourages scholarly debate and discussion of varying opinions, presenting inaccurate information to students in not acceptable,” the statement said. “This inaccurate portrayal will not reoccur.”At the website Rate My Professors, Zakaria gets almost universally outstanding reviews from past students.Students generally call Zakaria “the best professor” at SDSU or at least “definitely of the best professors on campus.”“I’m a big, big fan. This guy freakin’ rocks,” gushes a student who admits to barely passing Zakaria’s class..This guy needs to be CLONED,” agrees still another student. “And he actually cares about your grade.”

Op-Ed: The Pope Separates Jews from Israelis

Published: Friday, September 13, 2013 10:06 AM
One of the grave dangers in the Vatican's dialogue with Judaism is the Church's attempt to drive a wedge between the “good” and docile Jews of the Diaspora and the “bad” and arrogant Jews of Israel.

Pope Francis has praised Jews for keeping their faith despite the Holocaust and other “terrible trials” throughout history, and reaffirmed Judaism as the “holy root” of Christianity. In a letter, published on the front page of La Repubblica Italian newspaper, the Pope writes that "since Vatican Council II, we have rediscovered that the Jewish people are still for us the holy root from which Jesus germinated".As archbishop of Buenos Aires, Bergoglio had celebrated Rosh Hashana in local synagogues, he had voiced solidarity with Jewish victims of Iranian terrorism and co-written a book with a rabbi, Avraham Skorka. He attended a commemoration of Kristallnacht, the wave of Nazi attacks against Jews in November 1938.But as this new letter shows, one of the grave dangers in the Vatican's dialogue with Judaism is the Church's attempt to drive a wedge between the “good” and docile Jews of the Diaspora and the “bad” and arrogant Jews of Israel.
Pope Francis has never addressed the Israelis in his messages, nor has he openly defended the Jewish State since he was elected by the college of the cardinals. It seems that there is no room for stubborn, faithful Zionists in the Pope's lenient smile. In his speeches, Jewish national aspirations are ignored, if not denigrated.
The definitive proof is in Washington.

It seems that there is no room for stubborn, faithful Zionists in the Pope's lenient smile.
While the Pope was distributing that letter, in a new event co-sponsored by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, the Catholic University of America was hosting a special conference about “religious freedom and human rights issues in the Holy Land”. The speakers included Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, archbishop emeritus of Washington, D.C., Jessica Montell, executive director of B’Tselem anti-Israel group, and Mustafa Barghouti, the prominent member of the Palestinian Legislative Council.Cardinal McCarrick said that “the expansion of Israeli settlements into occupied territories provokes violence”, in a self-evident justification of Arab terrorism. Montell, who accepted money from BDS, added that “settlement expansion is a primary source of human rights violations for Palestinians” and that “human rights violations are inherent to a prolonged military occupation”."When you live under occupation, you come to accept things you shouldn't accept,” Lubna Alzaroo, a Muslim graduate of Bethlehem University and Fullbright scholar studying at the University of Washington, said at the D.C. event of the Catholic Church.
Among the organizations invited by the Catholic bishops there was also the Society of St. Yves, which charges "Israeli colonization, occupation and apartheid" and works for "the Palestinian refugees’ rights to return to their homes and places of origin". The Society of St. Yves shares also the "Nakba” ideology, the “catastrophe”, as the Arabs call the date of the creation of the State of Israel in 1948.While the Pope was penning his letter about Jesus, the US' highest Catholic political body was giving a platform to the boycotters of Israel, it was calling for the indefensible-for-Israel partition of the holy land and it was exculpating the Palestinian Arab for their jihad. The Vatican, as always happened in the past, will be silent during the next "terrible trials" for the Jewish people, if they occur, should it be Iranian nuclear or Arab terrorism. When Pope Francis was elected, a media outlet asked me to comment. My reply was: "I hope the next Pope will avoid the ecumenical mistakes of his predecessors, he will address the challenge of political Islam and understand the Jewish revolution of returning to the land after Auschwitz. Otherwise, any Jewish-Catholic dialogue will be empty, or worse, it will be a show for hypocrites".Was I right to be skeptical?

KING JESUS IS COMING FOR US ANY TIME NOW. THE RAPTURE. BE PREPARED TO GO.

FALSE POPE FROM THE VATICAN

REVELATION 13:11-13
11 And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth;(FALSE VATICAN POPE) and he had two horns like a lamb,(JESUS IS THE LAMB OF GOD) and he spake as a dragon.(HES SATANICALLY INSPIRED,HES A CHRISTIAN DEFECTOR FROM THE FAITH)
12 And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him,(WORLD DICTATOR) and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.(THE WORLD DICTATOR CREATES A FALSE RESURRECTION AND IS CROWNED LEADER OF THE NEW WORLD ORDER).
13 And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men,

REVELATION 17:1-5,9,15-18
1 And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters:
2 With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication,(VATICAN IN POLITICS) and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication.
3 So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.
4 And the woman (FALSE CHURCH) was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour,(VATICAN COLOURS)(ANOTHER REASON WE KNOW THE FALSE POPE COMES FROM THE VATICAN) and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication:
5 And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.
9 And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth.(THE VATICAN IS BUILT ON 7 HILLS OR MOUNTAINS)
15 And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.(VATICAN-CATHOLICS ALL AROUND THE WORLD OVER 1 BILLION)
16 And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast,(WORLD DICTATOR) these shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire.
17 For God hath put in their hearts to fulfil his will, and to agree, and give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled.
18 And the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth.

Archbishop Fitzgerald reflects on the Pope's friendly outreach to Muslims

Archbishop M. Fitzgerald, one of the Catholic Church’s top experts on Islam, reflects on Pope Francis’s friendly outreach to Muslims, and why he calls them “our brothers”

gerard o'connell rome Pope Francis has reached out in a very friendly way to Muslims calling them “brothers”. He has done so on a number of occasions, including at Aparecida on July 24, when he met a representative of Brazilian Muslims, and on August 11 when, from the Vatican, he extended his greeting to “the Muslims of the entire world” – some one billion of them, who had just celebrated the end of the month of Ramadan.I discussed the Pope’s approach and his use of the word ‘brother’ for Muslims with Archbishop Michael L. Fitzgerald, one of the Catholic Church’s top experts on Islam, former head of the Vatican’s office for interreligious dialogue (2002-06) and papal nuncio to Egypt and Delegate to the Arab League (2006-2012), who now lives in Jerusalem.

On August 11, Pope Francis called Muslims “our brothers”.  How do you interpret this?
To me this is a further sign that Pope Francis is reaching out to Muslims in a friendly way. Already the day after the inauguration of his pontificate, when he met with the delegations which had been present, including representatives of Muslims, he surprised the director of the Rome mosque by embracing him. He later told the members of the diplomatic corps that for him dialogue with Muslims is a priority. Just recently Pope Francis has signed in person the annual message to Muslims for the end of Ramadan. Addressing Muslims as brothers (including “sisters” one would presume) is in line with these steps.

Who was the first Pope to call Muslims ‘brothers’?
As far as I know, the first Pope to call Muslims “brothers” was Pope John Paul II.

Why did Benedict XVI call them ‘friends’ and not ‘brothers’?
It may be that Benedict XVI was following an ancient tradition in the Church according to which only fellow Christians are called brothers. We find this expressed in a sermon on Psalm 32 by St Augustine, and we can remember that Benedict is very much an Augustinian. Augustine say: “The prophet says of certain people: ‘To those who say to you, “You are not our brothers,” say, “You are our brothers.” Ask yourselves whom he could have meant – surely not the pagans? No, for according to the scriptures and in the normal usage of the Church we do not call them our brothers. Surely it was not the Jews, who did not believe in Christ? Read the apostle (i.e. St Paul), and observe that when he says ‘brothers’ without any qualification he means only Christians” (Office of readings, Tuesday of 14th week of the year).

Could you mention some significant statements by Popes in this regard since the Second Vatican Council?
Before setting out on his apostolic journey to India, Pope Paul VI referred to this trip in a general audience (2 December 1964). He called it “a journey of friendship and fraternity”. Having arrived the following day in Bombay (now Mumbai) he said: “We must meet not merely as tourists, but as pilgrims who set out to find God – not in buildings of stone but in human hearts. Man must meet man, nation must meet nation, as brothers and sisters, as children of God”. Of course the Pope was speaking to the people of India in general, but we should remember that Muslims make up a considerable number of the population of that country. When Paul VI journeyed to Uganda in 1969 he made a point of meeting with Muslims. He expressed to them his hope “that what we hold in common may serve to unite Christians and Muslims ever more closely in true brotherhood”. If we are united in brotherhood, there is surely no reason not to call one another “brothers”.

John Paul II was even more explicit in the use of the word ‘brother’ for Muslims.
Yes! John Paul II did not hesitate to call Muslims “brothers”. Speaking to representatives of the Muslims of France on 31 May 1980, he said: “It is with great joy that I address my greetings to you Muslims, our brothers in faith in the one God. Through you I salute all your brothers and sisters living in this country”. When he met representatives of Muslims of the Philippines in Davao, on 20 February 1981, he was even more explicit. “I deliberately address you as brothers: that is certainly what we are, because we are members of the same human family, whose efforts, whether people realize it or not, tend toward God and the truth that comes from him. But we are especially brothers in God, who created us and whom we are trying to reach in our own ways, through faith, prayer, and worship, through the keeping of his law and through submission to his designs.”  He continues: “But are you not, above all, brothers of the Christians of this great country, through the bonds of nationality, history, geography, culture, and hope for a better future, a future that you are building together?” (G363 emphasis in the original) .In this speech we can see different reasons for using the term “brothers” to express the relationship between Christians and Muslims: first of all simply as human beings, since we are all members of the one human family; secondly, because Christians and Muslims are united in their belief in and in the worship of the one God, even if their ways of expressing their belief and worship differ. Thirdly there is the brotherhood that exists when Christians and Muslims belong to the same nation.

Apart from the statements by Paul VI, John Paul II and Francis, are there some significant Church documents where this concept of Muslims as brothers is used?
The Second Vatican Council was the first Council ever to mention Muslims. It does so twice. In the Constitution on the Church it is stated that “the plan of salvation also includes those who acknowledge the Creator, in the first place among whom are the Muslims: these profess to hold the faith of Abraham, and together with us they adore the one, merciful God, mankind’s judge on the last day” (LG16). The Declaration on the Relations of the Church to other religions has a special paragraph on Islam. Brotherhood is not mentioned, but the paragraph starts by affirming that “The Church has also a high regard for the Muslims” (NA3).Attention should be given also to the final paragraph of this Declaration. Here the purpose is to remove the basis for discrimination of any kind. The following are the significant words: “We cannot truly pray to God our Father of all if we treat any people in other than brotherly fashion, for all men are created in God’s image. Man’s relation to God the Father and man’s relation to his fellowmen are so dependent on each other that the scripture says ‘he who does not love, does not know God’ (I Jn 4:8)” (NA5). It is true that this text is addressed to Christians, and it is true also that Muslim would not wish to use the name of Father for God; nevertheless if people are to be treated in brotherly fashion, there should be no objection to calling them “brothers”.

Following Pope Francis’ remarks, I have seen on Twitter comments like ‘Yes, they are brothers like Cain and Abel”, or ‘Why does the Pope call them brothers when they kill or behead us”.  What do you say to such people?
One could say: Of course, brothers do not always behave, but this is not a reason for not considering them as brothers. We should remember too that our Christian brothers in past centuries, the Crusaders, did not refrain from killing people. We should remember too that it was Christians who dropped the first atomic bomb.

From your experience and travel, do you think Christians in majority Muslim countries are happy at the identification of Muslims as brothers of Christians?
It is hard to generalize. It seems to me that many Christians in Muslim majority countries are quite happy to call Muslims their brothers. In Egypt there is a movement called al-ikhâ’ al-dînî, “the Religious Brotherhood”, which brings together Christians and Muslims. On the other hand, there are Christians who are tired of suffering from discrimination, and so tend towards a negative attitude to Muslims.

Do Muslims consider Christians as ‘brothers’?
The Qur’an states: “The Believers are but a single Brotherhood” (49:10). Another translation is: “Surely, the believers are brothers.” The question then arises as to who are the believers. All those who believe in God, whether they be Jews, Christians or Muslims, could be intended, yet Islamic tradition has tended to limit brotherhood to fellow Muslims only.

Pope Francis shows his knack for communication with a flurry of letters and phone calls

Pope Francis

The Pope has surprised everyone once again, this time with a letter to the co-founder and former editor of the Italian newspaper "La Repubblica"

Andrea Tornielli vatican city “Dear Dott. Scalfari…” Breaking with traditional Vatican protocol, the Pope has put pen to paper and written a letter in response to a couple of open letters published in Italian newspaper La Repubblica by its co-founder and former editor, Eugenio Scalfari. Scalfari had written to the Pope twice, in July and again in August, with a series of questions and reflection regarding Francis’ first encyclical, “Lumen Fidei”. The Pope, considering them to be intelligent questions, responded with a long letter written in person and published yesterday by La Repubblica, in which he outlines the core elements of the Christian faith and experience. Francis also explains that dialogue with non-believers “is not a secondary accessory in the existence of those who believe, but is rather an intimate and indispensable expression.”In his letter – a sort of compendium of essential points about the faith – the Pope talks about Jesus who “is revealed as the Son of God” on the cross. He talks about God’s forgiveness which is “stronger than any sin”. Francis answers the question about whether the Christian God forgives the sins of those who do not believe, explaining that the issue for those who do not believe in God is in obeying their own conscience.”  In terms of the difference between “absolute truth” and “relative and subjective truths” he says: “I would not speak about, not even for those who believe, an "absolute" truth, in the sense that absolute is something detached, something lacking any relationship.  Now, the truth is a relationship! ”As a cardinal, Joseph Ratzinger sometimes discussed faith-related issues with non-believers. When he became Benedict XVI, he promoted the meeting of the “Court of Gentiles” to continue this dialogue between believers and non-believers. But the letter which La Repubblica published yesterday has no precedent. Paul VI and John Paul II had discussed faith before and the content of these interviews published in books, but only with great Catholic figures such as Jean Guitton, André Frossard, Vittorio Messori. Not with non-believers.Francis’ letter to Scalfari is just the latest of a number of surprise gestures made by the Pope. The same Pope who, in response to the general bafflement at the fact that he carried his own hand luggage onto the plane to Rio last July, said: “We need to be normal”. Francis’ “normality” as Pope is certainly out of the ordinary. He gets around Rome without escorts and swaps flashy cars for ordinary Fiats and Ford Focuses – far more modest than the cars the cardinals in his retinue ride in. He decided to live in St. Martha’s House, which is much smaller and less isolated than the papal apartment in the Apostolic Palace and he eats his meals in the common dining room. He often telephones people – even complete strangers – who have written to him about their hardships, personally. For example, he called a mother who decided not to abort and another whose son was killed during a robbery..These little and big choices that reflect Francis’ personal style are new for a Pope. They are reminiscent of a pastor who twenty years ago, worked as a bishop among the people, far away from the Curia and any form of clericalism and power. Francis has not changed one bit, even now he is in the Vatican. This Pope, who bowed his head and asked people – before blessing them – to pray for him in silence, minutes after making his first appearance as newly-elected Pope, is reaching the hearts of so many people. Men and women who may not be that close to the Church, await his daily homilies in St. Martha’s House and look fondly upon the Pope-“parish priest” who manages to break the Gospel down, giving special focus to its message of mercy. And the message of a loving God who embraces the poor and suffering and calls on us to touch “the flesh of Christ”, an evangelical priority. What makes Francis so good at communicating is the fact that he is a direct and credible witness of the faith.  “He is a Pope who really makes the poor and needy feel God close to them,” an African girl said last Tuesday during the Pope’s visit to Centro Astalli, the Jesuit refugee centre in Rome. Francis is as at ease in Rio’s favelas, in soup kitchens and hugging the sick in St. Peter’s Square, as he is discussing faith with Eugenio Scalfari.

After raging fire, Jersey towns slammed by Sandy must rebuild - again

By Dave Warner-sept 13,13-yahoonews
SEASIDE PARK, New Jersey (Reuters) - Two New Jersey beach towns devastated by Superstorm Sandy will once again need to rebuild, after a fast-moving fire reduced dozens of businesses along the towns' boardwalk to rubble.About 100 firefighters remained on the scene on Friday, putting out remaining hot spots after containing a fire that started at a frozen custard stand in Seaside Park on Thursday and blazed out of control for hours, moving several blocks into neighboring Seaside Heights."It's piles of rubble, it's piles of just char and debris, caved-in buildings with no walls and no roofs," said Brian Gabriel, chief fire coordinator for Ocean County. "It just looks like a bomb went off."Authorities said they did not yet know the cause of the fire and did not have an estimate of how many businesses had been damaged."I don't have a handle on it," Gabriel said. "It's a lot."WCBS-TV reported, however, that witnesses said they saw electrical wires under the custard stand catch fire. The fire then burned through the stand and spread, the witnesses told WCBS-TV.Seaside Heights was the setting of MTV's reality show "Jersey Shore" and more recently became famous as the site of one of the most memorable images of Sandy: a roller coaster that fell into the Atlantic Ocean, where it stood, partially submerged by the waves. The blaze destroyed businesses over a total of six blocks in Seaside Park and Seaside Heights, officials said. Both communities were badly damaged during Sandy in October 2012."We're going to go up and do an assessment and put everything back together as soon as possible," Seaside Heights Mayor Bill Akers said on CNN on Friday. "If there's a silver lining, we just built it, we have the specs, we know what we're doing and we'll get it out to bid and we'll get it back up."
'CALL THE GOVERNOR'
Officials on Friday were urging people to stay away from the towns as fire crews and inspectors finished their work."It's unimaginable," said Seaside Park city councilwoman Gail Coleman as she directed traffic on one of the town's streets. "It's heart-wrenching. All of these businesses borrowed money, rebuilt with a lot of blood, sweat, tears and hope," Coleman said.Standing next to a large hose piping water in from nearby Barnegat Bay, Coleman urged motorists to stay out of town."You have to call your boss and tell him it's an emergency," she told one driver. "If your boss doesn't like it, tell him to call the governor."New Jersey Governor Chris Christie declared a state of emergency on Thursday after surveying the damage and declaring that it made him want to "throw up."Sandy, the second-costliest storm in U.S. history after Hurricane Katrina, devastated the New Jersey coast. The state estimated the damage at $37 billion.
The blaze was fanned by wind gusts that reached 40 miles per hour, though the 400 firefighters who were fighting the fire at its peak were aided by an overnight rainstorm.Crews tore up part of the boardwalk and a dug a 20-foot trench to keep flames from spreading through the closely packed buildings.(Additional reporting by Ian Simpson; Writing by Scott Malone; Editing by Jeffrey Benkoe and Steve Orlofsky)

Colo. flooding leads to thousands more evacuations

LYONS, Colo. (AP) — With rain still falling and the flood threat still real, authorities called on thousands more people in the inundated city of Boulder and nearby towns to evacuate as rivers and creeks rose to dangerous levels. The late-night reports from Boulder and the village of Eldorado Springs came as rescuers struggled to reach dozens of people cut off by flooding in Colorado mountain communities. Residents in the Denver area and other downstream communities were warned to stay off flooded streets. The towns of Lyons, Jamestown and others in the Rocky Mountain foothills have been isolated by flooding and without power or telephone since rain hanging over the region all week intensified late Wednesday and early Thursday. At least three people were killed and another was missing, and numerous people were forced to seek shelter up and down Colorado's populated Front Range.Boulder County spokesman James Burrus said 17 people were unaccounted for Friday, and officials planned to publicly release the names later."Unaccounted for doesn't mean missing. It means we haven't heard back from them," he said.
Two backpackers who were hiking the 14,259-foot Longs Peak became stranded when the weather turned, the mother of one of the backpackers said Friday.Suzanne Turell and Connie Yang of York, Maine, last sent a text message at 9 a.m. Thursday with their GPS coordinates, but their cellphones have since gone dead, said Barbara Turell of Federick, Md.They have a tent but do not have cold-weather gear, she said"Those kids have been up there for two days now. They're not prepared for the cold weather," she said. "We're very concerned we may be in a long line of people needing assistance."Late Thursday, warning sirens blared in Boulder and city officials sent notice to about 4,000 people living along Boulder Creek around the mouth of Boulder Canyon to head for higher ground, according to Boulder's Daily Camera newspaper. The alert was prompted by rapidly rising creek levels caused by water backing up at the mouth of the canyon because of debris and mud coming off the mountainsides, the city Office of Emergency Management said. The creek began to recede after midnight, but the conditions remained dangerous and a surprising amount of water was still flowing into the city's streets, Police Chief Mark Beckner told the Daily Camera after touring the damage. The entire hamlet of Eldorado Springs, about 500 people, was urged to evacuate because of a flash flood and mudslide threat along South Boulder Creek, Burrus said.Northwest of Boulder, the overflowing Vrain Creek cut the town of Longmont in half. Evacuation requests were issued for some neighborhoods, all major roads were closed, and several thousand homes and businesses were without power, he said.
Interstate 25 east of Loveland was closed in both directions Friday, state transportation officials said.In Fort Collins, neighborhoods along the Cache La Poudre River were evacuated overnight, with the river expected to rise to nearly 2 feet above flood stage Friday morning, according to the National Weather Service.
City officials in Fort Collins closed bridges after water began topping Seaman Reservoir in the Poudre Canyon, The Denver Post reported. The city warned residents to stay clear of the river.South of the historic Red Rocks Amphitheater, Jefferson County deputy sheriffs went door-to-door in Morrison and Kittridge, asking hundreds of residents to leave their homes as Bear Creek neared flood stage. The amphitheater was in no immediate danger. In Lyons, residents took shelter on higher ground, including some at an elementary school. Although everyone was believed to be safe, the deluge was expected to continue into Friday.
"There's no way out of town. There's no way into town. So, basically, now we're just on an island," said Jason Stillman, 37, who was forced with his fiancee to evacuate their home in Lyons after a nearby river began to overflow into the street. The Colorado National Guard began trucking people out of Lyons on Thursday evening. To the north, residents along the Big Thompson Canyon in Larimer County, scene of the deadliest flash flood in state history, were also evacuated. The Big Thompson River flooded in 1976 after about a foot of rain fell in just four hours, killing 144 people.Early Friday, the National Weather Service warned of more flash flooding in Loveland, according to the Post. NOAA reported that the Big Thompson River at Drake was more than 4 feet above its flood stage of 6 feet.President Barack Obama signed an emergency declaration Thursday night, freeing federal aid and allowing the Federal Emergency Management Agency to coordinate disaster relief efforts. Some of the flooding was exacerbated by wildfire "burn scars" that have spawned flash floods all summer in the mountains. That was particularly true in an area scarred by fire in 2010 near the tiny community of Jamestown and another near Colorado Springs' Waldo Canyon that was hit in 2012.The University of Colorado canceled classes at least through Friday after a quarter of its buildings were flooded. Students in family housing near Boulder Creek were also forced to leave. One person was killed when a structure collapsed in the tiny town of Jamestown northwest of Boulder. Another man drowned in floodwaters north of Boulder early Thursday, and a woman who was with him was missing.
The woman was swept away after the vehicle she was riding in got stuck in water. The man died after getting out of the vehicle to help her, Commander Heidi Prentup of the Boulder Sheriff's Office said.To the south, Colorado Springs police conducting flood patrols found the body of 54-year-old Danny Davis in Fountain Creek on the west side of the city.At least one earthen dam gave way southeast of Estes Park, the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park. Water levels could rise downstream as authorities release more water to ease pressure on dams. With debris piling up near bridges, downstream farming areas including Fort Lupton, Dacono and Plateville were also at risk.__Associated Press writers Colleen Slevin, Steven K. Paulson and Thomas Peipert in Denver and Mead Gruver in Longmont contributed to this report.

Barroso: Crisis inspired EU-wide debate

Today @ 09:29 SEPT 13,13
By Nikolaj Nielsen
BRUSSELS - European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said his State of the Union address laid out a pro-European narrative for political groups to follow in the lead up to the European elections.
Speaking to a group of reporters on Thursday (12 September), one day after his speech in the EU parliament, he conceded that the message may have been lost in some media coverage.“I thought I was making 28 different speeches,” the Portuguese politician said after reviewing press clips.“In my own country the debate was about the issue of flexibility in terms of the correction of the deficit, almost exclusively, something I did not even mention,” he noted. He said the speech received extensive TV coverage, but less so in the written press.“It is probably true that in the written press it got less coverage and has less impact, probably it was not attractive what I said, probably it was my fault,” he said. With the EU parliament election in May, campaign strategies are already being discussed among the groups. He said he is confident that the more moderate and mainstream parties will come out on top despite the rise of eurosceptic forces in some countries, which he attributes to simplistic messages and their manipulation of people’s emotions in times of difficulty. The anger felt among people about the crisis is justified and has paradoxically helped kick-start a wider European public space, he said.“We have seen in the last months and years in the coffee bars of Athens people discuss the internal politics of Germany and in the popular talk shows in Germany people discuss the public finances of Cyprus,” he said.He added: “I understand them, they are very angry when they see what happened in the financial sector, there is a resistance for the bonus for bankers and at the same time there is a resistance to a financial transaction tax that is a kind of a way of responding to the equity principle.”
But moderate political parties should resist the urge to redirect that anger against Europe because the EU cannot implement solutions without the member states, he said.“Very often Europe takes the blame but it is not Europe, it is national capitals that put obstacles and that is why I said, once again, that there is a tendency of national politicians to nationalise the successes and Europeanise the failures,” he said. For its part, the European Union is on the path to deeper political and monetary integration, he said.He pointed out that the single supervisor mechanism, which was presented one year ago, was approved earlier this week by heads of the European Parliament and European Central Bank (ECB).The rules lay the ground for a new bank supervisor to oversee the eurozone’s 150 largest banks.“A few years ago that would have been unthinkable with the arguments even among countries considered the most European would not have accepted that an entity outside their competence would supervise their banks. It’s done, it’s fantastic,” he said. The next step, he said, is to adopt a single resolution mechanism before the end of the parliament’s mandate.“I think we have to do it because it is something essential to create confidence which is indispensible for establishing the mechanisms of the monetary union and to avoid the disintegration of the financial market,” he said.Asked if he would consider running a third time as European Commission president, he said it was too early to discuss.“I still have my mandate until next October and a political year is an eternity. For the moment, like I said, I am concentrated on what I have to do. One thing I can say is that two mandates is already a lot in terms of responsibility.”

EU-Israel talks fail to agree on science funding

By Andrew Rettman
BRUSSELS - EU and Israeli negotiators in Brussels on Thursday (12 September) failed to agree on new funding rules, but identified "options" on making them easier for Israel to swallow. The talks, involving dozens of officials and diplomats from both sides, centred on Israel's participation in Horizon 2020.The EU's €80 billion science scheme runs from 1 January 2014 for seven years. But Israel has said it will not take part under new rules, published in July, which oblige its firms and institutions to sign documents saying EU money will not fund activity on occupied land. The European Commission noted on Thursday that "each side will go back to consult and check the various options discussed today," with a view to holding more talks "as soon as possible."An earlier meeting between EU and Israeli diplomats in Jerusalem on Tuesday also failed to reach agreement. But an EU spokeswoman said the Jerusalem talks were "fruitful" and that both sides "expressed their willingness to find solutions."For his part, the Greek ambassador to Israel, Spiros Lampridis, told Israeli daily the Jerusalem Post he sympathises with his host country."If I put myself in the Israeli shoes I can see why they are not able to sign it … our task as European states is to find alternatives to make this thing workable," he said.Israel has lobbied EU foreign ministers and the US state department to make Brussels postpone the measures. It says it cannot sign EU grant papers saying East Jerusalem, for example, is part of Palestine at the same time as negotiating final borders with Palestine in ongoing peace talks.US secretary of state John Kerry urged EU ministers at a meeting in Vilnius last Saturday to put off the rules.
But his appeal had limited impact. When EU foreign relations chief Catherine Ashton briefed ambassadors in the EU's political and security committee in Brussels on Monday, "she said there is no suggestion of changing the EU's policy," an EU diplomat told this website. The EU estimates that 0.3 percent, or €2.5 million, of the €800-million-or-so it paid to Israel in 2007 to 2013 funded settler activity. But under old rules it has no way to claim the money back even though it violates the EU position on Israel's borders.Meanwhile, Israeli opinion is split on the subject. In July, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said: "We will not accept any external dictates regarding borders."But on Wednesday over 600 Israeli intellectuals, former officials and activists, including Netanyahu's sister-in-law Ofra Ben-Artzi, sent a petition to EU officials urging them not to give way. They said Israel's threat to stay out of Horizon 2020 is a "tactical manoeuvre," which would be "to Israel’s own great detriment" if it followed through.
