OnStar, the service started by General Motors to support drivers through a cell phone system in their cars, has now told customers it may collect information on their movements and driving habits -- even if they no longer subscribe to the service. The notice went out quietly; the response has been anything but. OnStar installs cellular systems in vehicles which, if you pay for a service plan (starting at $18.95 a month), can give you driving directions, open the car doors if you lock yourself out, even track your car and alert local police if you are in an accident and your airbags inflate. Sound useful to you? It has more than five million customers. But then the company sent users a routine email updating its terms of service. Buried in some legal language was this line: Unless the Data Connection in your Vehicle is deactivated, information about your Vehicle may continue to be collected even if you do not have a Plan.A few lines later: We may ... share the information we collect with law enforcement or other public safety officials, credit card processors and/or third parties we contract with who conduct joint marketing initiatives with OnStar.In other words, OnStar was reserving the right to collect and share information on your driving habits -- even if you decided the service was a gimmick and ended your subscription.

Serious Concern About Privacy

OnStar went into apology mode.

Not a whole lot has changed, said Adam Denison, a spokesman for OnStar, in a conversation with ABC News. If people call in to cancel their service, we will inform them we will maintain the cellular connection, but they can disconnect at any time.Might the company sell the data to others, such as insurance companies? No, we're not doing it now, nor do we have any plans to do so, said Denison.What if a government agency were to call, asking for data on a driver's behavior? If a state highway department would call,he said,we could share data anonymously.So the police can't ask to see if I've ever driven 20 mph over the speed limit? Denison sent a statement from Joanne Finnorn, the firm's vice president for subscriber services:We are always very specific about with whom we share customers' personal information, and how they will use it,said Finnorn. We have never sold any personally identifiable information to any third party.It concluded, We apologize for creating any confusion about our Terms and Conditions. We want to make sure we are as clear with our customers as possible, but it's apparent that we have failed to do this.

Despite the company's assurances, this is another thorny case in which people have been monitored by a large company -- in this case, one that can tell where and how fast they drive -- and it may be possible for law enforcement agencies or others to subpoena them to get it.

Want Police Tracking You? How About Marketers?

Interconnected cars are a good thing, but a society with constant surveillance is not a good thing, said Justin Brookman, director of the consumer privacy project at the Center for Democracy & Technology in Washington.Brock Meeks, a colleague of Brookman's, pointed out that police can conceivably subpoena OnStar data without asking a judge's permission. They can track someone, he said, without having to show any suspicion of wrongdoing.Legal cases have gone back and forth on whether that should be allowed. The Supreme Court has agreed to hear a case, United States v. Jones, that could help settle whether police may use GPS to track people without a warrant approved by a judge.There's another part of this. Brookman said marketers in the future might be very interested in OnStar's data. If you regularly drive past a particular store, would you want the store sending you advertisements? What if those promotions are for lingerie or expensive cars? How would you feel if your spouse saw them? Franken and Coons said,We believe that OnStar's actions underscore the urgent need for prompt congressional action to enact privacy laws that protect private, sensitive information like location.One major factor that protects consumers, though, is consumer anger, said Brookman.It's not just consumers who are worried about privacy, he said.Companies are concerned that people will be freaked out and stop trusting their products.

Are American pastors free to share their political views from the pulpit? The answer to this question is complex. While some issues can certainly be discussed, there are also government-sanctioned limitations on partisan preaching (especially if churches expect to keep their tax-exempt status).A regulation added to the IRS code back in 1954 has muddied the waters for pastors, creating a scenario in which some leaders are too fearful of federal consequences to exercise their right to free speech from the pulpit.With pastors unsure of just how far they can take their partisan comments about specific candidates, some religious leaders find themselves purposefully avoiding the subject — a result that has potentially led to a decline in church education on issues of great social and political importance.As faith influences an individual’s take on social and political issues, one wonders why religious leaders face restrictions on speech that is so intertwined with personal religious beliefs.

The fear and uncertainty that some faith leaders experience is driven by the aforementioned ban on political campaign activity that was instituted on both charities and churches, alike, nearly 60 years ago. It was back in 1954 that Congress approved of what has become known as the Johnson Amendment. The provision, which still stands today, explicitly prohibits 501(c)(3) organizations (churches and charities) from engaging in campaign activity.Rather than declining in prevalence over time, this regulation has been strengthened. The last change was made to it back in 1987, when the amendment’s language was tightened to clarify that the restrictions should also cover statements and stances that stand against candidates (previously it was interpreted to only stand for statements that supported specific candidates). The IRS describes a 501(c)(3) as a group:which does not participate in, or intervene in (including the publishing or distributing of statements), any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for public office.Since religious leaders — be they liberal or conservative — are legally restricted in recommending or railing against specific political candidates, silence, for some, has likely been the response. This has created an environment under which some leaders feel that they cannot remain true to their personal beliefs and convictions.

The Speak Up campaign (launched by the Alliance Defense Fund) addresses this important issue, while working to protect and promote the rights of American churches. In addition to making faith leaders aware of their constitutional right to free speech, the movement encourages pastors to stop self-censoring and to start making their political voices heard.Below, see a trailer that comprehensively explains Speak Up in some pastors’ own words:To combat these restrictions, which critics believe severely impede the free speech of pastors and faith leaders, alike, the ADF also launched the Pulpit Initiative and Pulpit Freedom Sunday back in 2008. The project, designed to restore pastors’ rights to speak openly about any and all issues addressed in the Bible, described the historical restrictions on faith leaders as follows:Historically, churches have emphatically, and with great passion, spoken Scriptural truth from the pulpit about government and culture. Historians have stated that America owes its independence in great degree to the moral force of the pulpit. [...]All that changed in 1954 with the passage of the Johnson amendment which restricted the right of churches and pastors to speak Scriptural truth about candidates for office.The Pulpit Initiative is urging pastors to come together to challenge this free speech-altering restriction. And proponents of the movement aren’t shy. While they don’t want to turn churches into political mechanisms, they do want to see the Johnson Amendment declared unconstitutional. ADF is actively seeking to represent churches or pastors who are under investigation by the IRS for violating the Johnson Amendment by preaching biblical Truth in a way that expresses support for – or opposition to – political candidates. ADF represents all of its clients free of charge.But in addition to legal help, pastors can also join in on Pulpit Freedom Sunday, an annual event the coalition has launched to encourage pastors to preach sermons that to examine candidates’ stances. Aside from exploring candidate opinion, churches are encouraged to look at what Scripture says about each issue. Then, they will make specific recommendations about whether or not the congregation should vote for or against specific candidates.Following the event, each pastor lets the IRS know about his or her sermon. The hope is that making the government aware of the code violation will spark an audit. Then, the constitutionality of the Johnson Amendment can be hashed out once and for all.In 2008, only 33 pastors participated; this expanded to 80 faith leaders in 2009 and then nearly 100 in 2010. With the movement rapidly growing, even more leaders are poised to take part in this year’s Pulpit Freedom Sunday on October 2, 2011.

I would like to see accurate statistics of how many Israelis have been killed by the bombs thrown by Palestinians or with the rockets that were launched by them, 10, 20, 100, 200 … how many? Please document it. Let us know.But on the other hand, he continued,we know that hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were killed. Only as a result of the Gaza attack, thousands of people were killed. These are very clear remarks. Those who are in power in Israel must understand that true security comes with a genuine peace. There is nothing that can replace peace.Erdogan referred to his country’s diplomatic row with Israel over the 2010 flotilla and once again demanded that Israel apologize for the deaths of nine Turkish nationals on the Mavi Marmara.Israel must apologize, pay compensation, and remove the blockade on Gaza, Erodgan was quoted as saying, making it clear once again that these are his terms for normalizing relations with Israel.He emphasized, however, that Turkey has no problem with the Israeli people.

Turkey has officially denied involvement in gathering a list of 174 names of Israeli personnel – mostly navy commandos – involved in the May 2010 clash on the Mavi Marmara flotilla vessel.Istanbul Deputy Public Prosecutor Ates Hasan Sozen denied in a statement to the Turkish newspaper Today's Zaman asking the National Intelligence Organization (MIT) to identify IDF soldiers and commanders involved in the raid. Sozen said the list was prepared by the IHH organization that owned the Mavi Marmara, and had been allegedly prepared using a Facebook search.No state institution had such a request, nor does it have any information on this, he said. The prosecutor conducting the investigation has given no such order. He added that IHH lawyer Ugur Yildirim submitted the list Monday morning, the same day the list was published in a Turkish daily.The report published earlier in the day in the Turkish Sabah daily newspaper said the MIT had gathered information on the identities of the IDF commandos involved in killing nine Turkish terror activists on the vessel.

According to the report, the Istanbul Chief Prosecutor's Office had written to Israel demanding the full names and residential addresses of the military and government officials who gave the orders to attack the Mavi Marmara, and those who carried out those orders. Israel refused to comply, the newspaper reported, hence the prosecutor's request to MIT.Almost all of the soldiers who took part in the killing of nine Turks and the wounding of 30 others have been identified, the paper claimed.Legal steps have already been taken to protect those who were involved in the operation, according to the IDF.The Mavi Marmara was one of six ships allegedly intent on bringing humanitarian aid to Gaza. The Free Gaza movement used the sea for the operation as a means to breaking Israel's blockade of the region. It was later found that the Mavi Mamarma was carrying no humanitarian aid whatsoever, and many of its passengers were armed and looking to initiate a confrontation. The flotilla ignored repeated calls by Israel's navy to change course and head to Ashdod port, where their aid supplies would be debarked, inspected and transferred to Gaza through an overland route. Instead, IDF commandos were forced to board the vessels to ensure they did not reach Gaza -- and on the Mavi Marmara, the soldiers were viciously attacked by terror activists with deadly weapons.The United Nations' Palmer Report concluded in its findings earlier this month that Israel's blockade of Gaza is legal and appropriate given the constant efforts by the region's ruling Hamas terrorist organization, and others, to smuggle in arms and ordnance with which to attack Israeli citizens.

Iraq signs deal to buy 18 F-16 warplanes

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraq has signed a contract to buy 18 Lockheed Martin F-16 warplanes to bolster its air force, an adviser to Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki said on Monday.The value of the deal was not immediately known, but a senior U.S. military official said recently the offer on the table for the Iraqi government was valued at roughly $3 billion.Iraqi and U.S. military officials have said strengthening its air force is one of Baghdad's top priorities as U.S. troops prepare to leave by December 31, more than eight years after the invasion that ousted Saddam Hussein.The contract was signed ... and a part of the contract cost was sent to the bank account of the company, said Maliki's media adviser, Ali al-Moussawi.Lockheed said in a statement it looked forward to a partnership with Baghdad and was pleased with the confidence Iraq places in our products. It declined to comment on the specifics of the deal, referring questions to the Iraqi and U.S. governments.The Pentagon said it was aware of news reports that Iraq had signed the agreement but did not immediately confirm and referred questions to Baghdad.Iraq has long sought a combat jet for its rebuilt air force. The government delayed a planned purchase of F-16s in February to divert a $900 million down payment to its national food ration program to help quell street protests.

Maliki said on July 30 Iraq would buy 36 F-16s, double the number it had originally planned, to shore up its weak air defenses. The OPEC producer has found itself flush with cash this year, reaping windfall profits as world oil prices have remained above budget projections.The two sides have been negotiating for the F-16 Block 52 export model with sophisticated avionics and weapons in a deal that included maintenance and training, a U.S. military official said.Iraq is relying on the U.S. military for air support as it rebuilds its forces and battles a stubborn Islamist insurgency. Washington and Baghdad are discussing whether to keep some U.S. troops or military trainers in Iraq beyond the year-end deadline for U.S. departure.Iraq's two airborne defense units, the Air Force and Army Aviation Command, have only 158 aircraft, including 89 helicopters and 69 airplanes, and about 7,500 personnel, according to U.S. figures.At present, it has three Cessna Caravan propeller planes equipped with Hellfire missiles but no combat jets, a U.S. military official said.

The commander of the U.S. European Command (EUCOM), Admiral James Stavridis, departed Israel on Monday following a two-day work visit as a guest of the Chief of the General Staff, Lieutenant General Benny Gantz.During the course of his visit, Admiral Stavridis conducted work meetings with senior officers and toured a number of facilities throughout the country, including a site of an Iron Dome battery which protects Israeli citizens from rockets and missiles fired by the enemy.EUCOM, the United States Combatant Command responsible for nearly all of Europe, parts of Asia and the Middle East, and the Atlantic and Arctic Ocean, also heads many aspects of the military cooperation between Israel and the United States. One specific example of this cooperation is active missile defense.Israel and the United States plan to hold a joint large scale missile defense exercise next year to improve operational coordination of their defense systems.The exercise is scheduled to take place in early 2012 and will be one of the most extensive and complex drills ever conducted.
This was Admiral Stavridis’ third visit to Israel and his first in the current year. The visit took place as part of the annual schedule of joint training and learning between EUCOM and the IDF.

The very people who have been charged with protecting the Greek parliament and politicians from furious crowds and who have even been criticised by Amnesty International for their heavy-handedness, the Greek police, have themselves now begun to protest EU-IMF austerity.On Monday, police from the Special Guards unit climbed Mount Lycabettus, the highest point in Athens, to hang a giant black banner underneath the hill’s famous Chapel of St. George saying Pay day, day of mourning.
Some 50 striking police officers protected the banner from police who remained in service and who had been sent to tear the banner down.Troops of police have also protested outside European Commission offices in the capital and the German and French embassies, with a banner reading: Troikans Out! and another from the Pan-Hellenic Federation of Police Officers declaring in English: Greeks do not negotiate our national dignity.We will not become escorts for drug-addict politicians to get their latest dose,said another in reference the police operation in June providing protection from mass protests for MPs to be able enter parliament to pass austerity measures. The Greek term for a tranche of a loan and for a dose of drugs is the same word.The officers complain of cuts in wages and forced unpaid leave. Monday was a scheduled pay-day, but some wages are being withheld as part of a special solidarity tax imposed on public sector workers.

They have said they intend to massively participate alongside other civil servant protests. Further police protests are scheduled for Tuesday evening near the parliament.An angry declaration on the police union website from warned of an escalation of our struggle and that the security forces would not uncritically accept the directives from emanating from the IMF, the European Union and the powerful countries.We refuse to accept government conditions for occupiers of our land.The police demonstrations came amid further industrial action by transport workers on Monday, with Athens metro, tram and suburban rail halted for 24 hours. A public-sector strike has been announced for 5 October while an all-sector general strike is to be held on 19 October.On Sunday, riot police used tear gas to clear thousands of protestors from Syntagma Square in front of the Greek parliament. The Greek government in June was criticised by Amnesty International for its excessive use of tear gas against protestors.The same day, some 50 students stormed state television offices aiming to broadcast a message protesting reforms to universities, cuts that have kicked of a series of sit-ins at post-secondary institutions across the country.There has been an occupation at the state television channel NET and we are dealing with it, government spokesman Elias Mossialos said. The station refused the students’ demand and transmitted a travel documentary instead of the seven o’clock news.

Separately, the European Commission on Monday said that troika inspectors would still not be arriving in Athens to continue their review of the implementation of the austerity demanded by international lenders.No date has been set, said economy spokesman Amadeu Altafaj-Tardio. An EU official later said however that the commission is pretty confident [that they can return this week].[The troika] are finalising discussions with Greece, then we can move forward,said the official.
However, any decision on the release of the latest, €8 billion tranche of bail-out cash for the country will not be made even during a meeting of eurozone finance ministers in Luxembourg on 3 October.The troika mission must first return to Athens, produce a compliance assessment, which must then be considered by other eurozone states before the funds can be handed over.It will be a tight schedule, as the country is set to run out of money to pay civil servants and pensioners by the middle of next month.Greek police protest EU-IMF austerity

There is life after the Commission

At least 39 percent of Commissioners become representatives of some private interests after leaving the European Commission. They join a company or an interest group association or establish a consulting business of their own.This is the result of a study The Private Interest Representation by former EU Commissioners', scrutinizing the activities of the 92 Commissioners who have retired from the Commission since 1982.*

The ex-Commissioners use the knowledge and network they have acquired during their term of office. They cash in on the human capital that they have accumulated at the expense of the taxpayers.The prospect of afterlife, however, may affect their decisions and voting behaviour while they are still at the Commission. It may induce them to be more accommodating towards interest groups. This is why the Commission has adopted a Code of Conduct prescribing a cooling-off period during which its retiring members are not supposed to lobby in their former policy field.

Portfolio and nationality

Indeed, as the study shows, the probability that the ex-Commissioners become lobbyists depends significantly on their former policy brief. It is 100 percent if they have been responsible for competition policy, 89 percent for the internal market, 67 percent for economics and finance and 57 percent for agriculture, energy or industry. It is zero for ex-Commissioners who have been in charge of research, education, administrative affairs, health or multilinguism.The Commissioner's home country also matters. Commissioners from Portugal, Austria, Bulgaria and Malta have the highest propensity to lobby, those from Scandinavia the lowest. The UK comes tenth with a probability of 44 percent.Another factor is education. Among the ex-Commissioners who have a law degree, 48 percent become lobbyists. This compares with 35 percent for economists and 33 percent for the rest. However, the lawyers are more willing to sign the Commission's register of lobbyists. They seem to consider it more natural to defend special interests.Commissioners nominated by left wing governments are significantly less likely to represent private interests after they have stepped down. This may be due to their preferences, or they may be less useful as lobbyists. There is no significant difference between conservatives, liberals and independents.

Average retirement age i 58

Age also plays a role. The younger the Commissioner is at the time of leaving the Commission, the larger the probability is that he or she will become a lobbyist. This was to be expected because the older ex-Commissioners are more likely to stop working altogether.However, a lengthy office term is shown to raise the probability of becoming a private interest representative. On average, Commissioners retire at the age of 58, after six years of office.The share of ex-Commissioners turning lobbyists does not follow a trend. It rose in 1993-99 but it fell thereafter. The increase in the 1990s may have been due to the fact that the Single European Act (1987) and the Treaty of Maastricht (1993) introduced qualified majority decisions on many types of regulations. This meant that interest groups could capture the Council more easily. The subsequent decline may have been caused by the Commission's Code of Conduct (1999) or by the Eastern enlargement (2004). Eastern Europeans may be less used to lobbying in Brussels.

Cooling-off period extended

The Commission has just extended the cooling-off period for retiring Commissioners from 12 to 18 months. However, ex-Commissioners may obtain up to 65 percent of their former salary for three years after leaving, if their income from work stays within specified limits. These times ought to be brought in line.Moreover, the cooling-off period applies only to lobbying within the ex-Commissioner's former policy brief. Yet the Commission decides collectively. Each Commissioner is entitled to vote on all decisions taken by the Commission. The prospect of becoming a lobbyist may also affect his vote on issues outside his policy brief. The cooling-off period ought to cover all policy fields in which the Commission is active.Finally, rules should not be set by those who later are to abide by them. If the rules are determined by the Commissioners, they are likely to be biased in their favour. They will not sufficiently restrict the scope for post-Commission lobbying.As a result, Commissioners give too much support to special interest groups, both before and after retiring from the Commission. The Code of Conduct for former Commissioners ought to be legislated by the Council and the European Parliament or be incorporated in the European Treaties.

Typhoon lashes Philippines, 1 dead, thousands flee

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — A powerful typhoon slammed the northern Philippines Tuesday, unleashing floods, cutting power and halting work in the capital, Manila, where residents waded in waist-deep waters and strong winds toppled trees.
Authorities ordered more than 100,000 people to shelter from rains and wind gusts of up to 106 miles (170 kilometers) per hour. At least one person — a baby — drowned and four fishermen were reported missing.Typhoon Nesat made landfall before dawn over eastern mountainous Isabela and Aurora provinces which face the Pacific Ocean, packing sustained winds of 87 mph (140 kph), the government weather bureau said.

With its immense 400-mile (650-kilometer) cloud band, the typhoon threatened to foul weather across the entire main Luzon Island as it moves across the Philippines toward the South China Sea late Wednesday or early Thursday and then heads toward southern China.Heavy downpours and winds prompted the closure of government offices, schools and universities in the capital, while scores of domestic flights were canceled and inter-island ferries grounded, stranding thousands. The Philippine Stock Exchange and U.S. Embassy were also closed Tuesday.A year-old baby drowned in the central island province of Cataduanes after falling into a river, the government disaster agency reported. Four fishermen were missing while more than 50 others were rescued along eastern shores after their boats overturned in choppy seas. London's Daily Telegraph has the text of Moderate Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas Abu Mazen's letter to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon requesting statehood. Not only are the words 1967 borders not mentioned; it also doesn't mention the 1949 armistice lines. Instead, Abu Bluff wants to go back to the 1947 partition plan, which was rejected on the spot by the Arabs because it allowed a Jewish state at all.

I warned back in July that this was where it was headed. Here's a map to give you an idea of what 1947 would mean (Israel liberated much more territory in the War of Independence).Israel would be the blue parts on the map. It would mean no Jerusalem and no airport. Even more indefensible borders than the 1949 armistice lines. When the Palestinians presented their bid for statehood at the UN Friday, most news outlets suggested Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas was aiming for a state based on 1967 borders covering only the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem.A closer look at the actual letter he presented to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon applying for UN membership reveals the Palestinians are aiming for far more territory.As reprinted in the Telegraph, Abbas’s letter reads:This application for membership is being submitted on the Palestinian people’s natural, legal and historic rights and based on United Nations General Assembly resolution 181 (II) of 29 November 1947 as well as the Declaration of Independence of the State of Palestine of 15 November 1988 and the acknowledgement by the General Assembly of this declaration in resolution 43/177 of 15 December 1988.Lots of dates are cited here. Let’s take a closer look. Abbas says his people’s rights are based on the 1947 UN Resolution. That year refers to the UN Partition Plan, the same plan all Arab states rejected and the Jews accepted for their homeland, after which those Arab neighbors declared war on Israel.

Though President Obama has endorsed Palestinian demands — stated until now — that their future state be based on 1967 borders, Israel says borders should be based on the outcome of negotiations. If Abbas’s proposal is accepted by the UN Security Council, gone from Israel is Jerusalem its capital and home to the sites most sacred to Jews and Christians. Also gone: Ben Gurion Airport just outside Tel Aviv, the country’s only major international airport.The blog Israel Matzav explains the significance:It would mean no Jerusalem and no airport. UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The Palestinians' initiative to seek U.N. recognition as a state, which goes to the Security Council on Monday, faces an uphill struggle to secure the nine votes needed for approval.Without those votes in the 15-member body, the United States will be spared the embarrassment of having to veto the application, which would be a further blow to its floundering efforts to secure Middle East peace.As the formal discussions start, diplomats say the Palestinians have only six certain votes on the council -- China, Russia, Brazil, Lebanon, India and South Africa.Those nations, except Lebanon, make up the BRICS bloc of emerging powers whose economic and diplomatic clout has grown as trade becomes more globalised and the United States and Europe fight prospects of another recession.

But diplomats say the BRICS countries seem to have made no attempt to use their considerable weight, often on show in financial and trade matters, to force the Palestinian issue. They have essentially taken the same approach as always.If a vote was held today, the Palestinians wouldn't have enough votes to carry the day and the Americans wouldn't even need to use their veto, a Western diplomat told Reuters.The Palestinian observer to the United Nations, Riyad Mansour, told reporters nine council members are among the 131 U.N. member states that have recognized the state of Palestine and he hoped that they would vote positively.But he acknowledged that council members will face tremendous pressure in the coming weeks to vote against the Palestinian U.N. bid.Still, diplomats say Washington remains isolated on the council because of its staunch support for Israel, which the majority of U.N. member states believe has worked hard to sabotage peace talks with the Palestinians.In February, Washington vetoed what was widely seen as an anodyne resolution condemning Israeli settlement activity, even though its language was largely consistent with statements of the Obama administration, which has urged the Israelis to resume a moratorium on new settlements.When Israel ended the moratorium a year ago, the Palestinians withdrew from moribund peace talks.

Highlighting its isolation on the Security Council, Washington cast the sole vote against the settlements resolution. The other 14 members -- including Washington's European allies such as Britain and France -- opposed the United States and Israel and voted for the resolution.The Europeans agree with Washington that the Palestinian U.N. bid is unwise and are inclined to oppose it. But the Europeans and Americans are far apart on the Middle East issue and diplomats say Washington remains as isolated as ever.Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas set the clock ticking on Friday when he delivered a U.N. membership application for a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The capital would be East Jerusalem, land Israel captured in the 1967 war that it launched out of fear Arabs were poised to attack.The council will take up the Palestinian membership application on Monday in closed-door consultations, but no immediate action is expected, diplomats say.Normally the council would take no more than 35 days to review and assess a membership application. In July, the application of South Sudan, the 193rd U.N. member and the most recent country to join the world body, was approved in a matter of days and given to the General Assembly, which confirmed it.Western diplomats on the Security Council say that will not be the case with the Palestinian application. The statistics released for the approaching Rosh Hashanah relate to the end of 2010. At that time, the Israeli population numbered 7,797,400 people, of whom 5,874,300 are Jews, comprising 75.4 percent, and 1,600,100 are Arabs, comprosing 20.5 percent of the total. Another 318,000 are neither Jews nor Arabs (Druze, Circassian etc.). About 217,000 foreign laborers were not included in the population total.The general population is rising at about 1.9 percent annually, as it has been for the past eight years. The Jewish population is growing by 1.7 percent annually, while the Muslim population is increasing by 2.5 percent each year.Jews are marrying later every year: About 64.4 percent of male Jews aged 25-29 are still unmarried, as are 45.5 percent of the women in that age range. In the year 2000, these numbers were 54 percent and 38.1 percent, respectively. Among Muslims, 43.5 percent of men and 19 percent of women in this age group are unmarried.

Euro zone damps talk of rapid debt crisis steps

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Euro zone officials played down reports on Monday of emerging plans to halve Greece's debts and recapitalize European banks to cope with the fallout, stressing that no such scheme is yet on the table.Europe came under fierce pressure from the United States and other major economies at weekend talks in Washington to take swift, decisive action to stop the Greek debt crisis engulfing bigger euro zone states and derailing world economic recovery.But officials said media reports that planning was already in place for a 50 percent writedown in Greek debt and a vast increase in the euro zone rescue fund, the EFSF, were highly premature.There is no change to the framework we are working on, said a euro zone official who is involved in decision-making on financial assistance to Greece, Ireland and Portugal.All this talk of a specific haircut for Greece or an enlargement of the EFSF, it is all just speculation. We are not working along those lines, said the official.German Chancellor Angela Merkel, struggling to convince her fractious center-right coalition to back a strengthening of the EFSF in a crucial vote on Thursday, said on Sunday that letting Greece default would destroy investor confidence in the euro zone.Diplomats said any talk of a fallback plan for Greece that would raise the cost to German taxpayers could only make her task more difficult in parliament this week.

Private economists and Brussels think-tanks are forecasting a Greek debt default within months or sooner, coupled with a capital injection for European banks and a leveraging up of the EFSF so that it can handle fallout in Italy and Spain.Euro zone officials acknowledge that such policy ideas are circulating and some could constitute a longer-term response to the 20-month debt crisis. But they insist no specific plans are yet in the works.Instead, planning continues on the basis that Greece's debt burden, which is close to 160 percent of GDP, can be sustained as long as the government fully implements austerity measures demanded by the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the IMF, the so-called troika.U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner highlighted global concerns about deficient European crisis management, saying on Saturday:The threat of cascading default, bank runs and catastrophic risk must be taken off the table.IMF Chief Christine Lagarde, the former French finance minister who until four months ago was tackling the crisis from the European side, also made it the euro zone needs to act more decisively, notably to recapitalize banks on a large scale.Quietly, euro zone policymakers accept that a combination of a much deeper Greek debt restructuring allied to coordinated bank recapitalizations and a bolstered rescue fund would make sense and might help the euro zone get on top of the crisis.But such a plan would require support from all 17 euro zone countries, and it takes time in the EU's decision-making structures to bring so many moving parts together at once.The ideas are all there, but it's not as straightforward as just sitting down and deciding it, said another euro zone financial official involved in handling the crisis.Many of us can agree privately that anything less than a 50 percent haircut for Greece would just be cosmetic, but getting that decided by all and implementing it is not so easy.

PROPOSAL SOUP

Instead, the next step is expected to be a decision by the EU, ECB and IMF to sign off on the next tranche of support for Greece -- the sixth payment from the original 110 billion euro emergency package agreed in May last year.The timing will depend on when the troika completes a review of Athens' progress on implementing deeper budget cuts and tax-raising measures. Without that 8 billion euros, Greece will run out of money to pay October wages and pensions.Olli Rehn, the EU's economic and monetary affairs commissioner, has said he hopes a decision can be taken by mid-October. It's unlikely to come any sooner.Germany's deputy finance minister, Joerg Asmussen, said there was no chance euro zone finance ministers would be able to sign off on Greece's next aid tranche when they meet next week.Given the delay of the troika mission, I do not see that the upcoming Eurogroup on October 3 will decide on the sixth tranche, he said in a speech in Washington on Sunday.Financial markets and the private sector seem to be moving more rapidly than policymakers to prepare themselves for the likelihood of a Greek default.Safe-haven German government bonds fell on Monday and shares rallied partly due to a belief that European policymakers were working on more decisive action to tackle the debt crisis. Such hopes could be quickly dashed.J.P. Morgan Securities said it expected euro zone governments to ease the funding crisis among European banks via a capital injection of up to 150 billion euros, an initiative that would be similar to the U.S. TARP program.Euro-TARP is in our view the best risk-reward medicine for opening the Eurobank funding market, J.P. Morgan analyst Kian Abouhossein write in a note to clients.In a separate report, UBS analysts said they expected some form of intervention from the European Central Bank and a euro zone guarantee scheme for bank term debt, or a Euro-TARP initiative, to provide sticking plasters for the system.

But there are no signs that any such plans are formally in preparation at this stage, again underlining that policymakers may be behind the curve in tackling the crisis.Euro zone officials acknowledge that the EFSF, which will soon have an effective capacity of 440 billion euros, is not big enough to handle a potential bailout of Italy or Spain, the region's third and fourth largest economies. But there is no clarity on how the fund could be raised without more guarantees.One idea is for the fund to act as an insurer, guaranteeing the first portion of losses on Italian or Spanish debt. That could leverage its capacity four or five times, but the legality of such a scheme remains to be established and nothing has been put to euro zone finance ministers.Another proposal would be to turn the EFSF into a bank, which would allow it to access ECB funds, meaning that it would effectively have unlimited capacity. France seen moving towards bank bailout

PARIS (Reuters) - Investors and analysts who think a government bailout for the troubled French banking sector is increasingly likely are focusing on what form any aid could take, even as banks continue to deny they need state help.The possibility of a bailout jumped from speculation to something much more concrete at the weekend after Bank of France Chairman Christian Noyer said in an interview that a support mechanism set up in 2008 could be used to shore up banks' capital in case of an extraordinary event.On Monday, at least five different analyst research notes discussed the increasing likelihood of a government move to inject capital into BNP Paribas, Societe Generale and Credit Agricole.We believe the longer the crisis continues, the greater the likelihood that the French government will opt for some form of market shock therapy to reintroduce confidence in the French banks' viability, said HSBC analysts in one.All three banks surged on Monday, tracking a broader rally in European banks, whose shares have been hammered in recent months. Societe Generale, for example, had lost 57 percent in the three months through Friday, while Credit Agricole was down 55 percent over the same period.The sentiment that the (French) state is there to support the banks if needed explains the rebound even if the banks say they have no need for it, said Frederic Rozier, a fund manager at Meeschaert Asset Management.All three banks have continued to deny that any bailout is needed or being planned, but as Nomura analyst Jon Peace said in a research note on Monday, there were also strenuous denials in 2008 until just days before the French government moved in with a recapitalization plan.

MORE FLEXIBILITY

At the time, with financial markets rattled by the collapse of Lehman Brothers, the French state made available 360 billion euros ($487 billion) for the banks, 40 billion of which was for strengthening their capital base, while another 320 billion helped them refinance via a public entity called the SFEF.Several banking sources have said they had heard private rumblings that a state injection of preference shares -- interest-bearing instruments half-way between debt and equity -- was being discussed, though how concretely was unclear.Preference shares give more flexibility to design it in the way they want, said one Paris-based banker late last week, adding that the government would need to pull the trigger at the right time.You can only do that when you are really at the bottom, he said, noting that otherwise further share declines could undermine the confidence boost provided by the intervention.Assya economist Marc Touati pointed to a potential political hurdle too: will France do this unilaterally without Europe? In the government's last rescue after the 2008 financial crisis, the banks raised capital by selling preferred shares that were not convertible into ordinary shares.BNP Paribas sold 5.1 billion euros' worth and Societe Generale raised 3.4 billion from the government.To be effective in 2011 to reduce concerns about euro zone default, we believe much higher amounts would be needed, Nomura's Peace wrote.Some form of injection that does not involve common shares is likely because the French government does not want to get involved in day-to-day management decisions at the banks, RBS analysts wrote in a note.That said, there may well be political pressure in some French quarters to consider common equity injections,they added.

LIQUIDITY SUPPORT EYED

Another form of intervention that would fall short of a capital injection would be some form of liquidity support in which the government would provide guarantees for senior debt, similar to those provided by the 2008 SFEF facility.Still, any kind of French move to revive its banks could fall short given euro zone strains hitting funding conditions.European officials are focusing on ways to beef up their existing 440 billion-euro rescue fund following a weekend of meetings in Washington, D.C. WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Expanded Federal Reserve efforts to boost tepid growth and cut high unemployment are justified as broken housing markets and depleted household wealth act as a brake on the recovery, a top Fed official said on Monday.Even though the effect of aggressive Fed policies to ease financial conditions has been muted by declines in house values and consumer reticence, it would be wrong to conclude central bank actions are useless, Federal Reserve Governor Sarah Bloom Raskin said.
The opposite conclusion might well be the case -- namely that additional policy accommodation is warranted under present circumstances, she said in remarks prepared for delivery to an event sponsored by the University of Maryland Smith School of Business.The Fed's aggressive actions have been completely appropriate in promoting job growth, Raskin said. ATHENS, Greece (AP) — As the prospect of a disastrous debt default hung over Greece, the government faced strikes and protests Monday against new austerity measures needed to appease the country's rescue creditors.Athens metro, tram and suburban rail workers held a 24-hour strike, while buses and trolleys were to stop operating for several hours. Airline passengers also faced delays as traffic controllers implemented work-to-rule action, refusing to work overtime. A 48-hour strike by all transport workers is expected later this week.Greek police held their own protest, with the Special Guards unit hanging a giant black banner from the top of Lycabettus Hill in the capital reading Pay day, day of mourning.Faced with mounting anger from the country's international creditors, the government recently announced a raft of new austerity measures to secure the next euro8 billion ($10.7 billion) installment of bailout loans from the euro110 billion rescue package it has been dependent on since last year. Without the funds, Greece only has enough funds to see it through mid-October, when it faces the prospect of a messy default.

Debt inspectors from the International Monetary Fund, European Commission and European Central Bank, known collectively as the troika, are expected to return to Athens this week to resume a review suspended earlier this month amid talk of delayed implementation of reforms.But no specific date has been set for their return, and the European Commission made clear Monday that no decision on releasing the funds would be reached during a meeting of eurozone finance minister in Luxembourg next Monday.Yes, I can exclude that, said Commission spokesman Amadeu Altafaj Tardio. A plan involving a multi-trillion euro leveraging of the eurozone's rescue fund via the European Central Bank is under consideration as the EU comes under global pressure to act quickly to prevent the bloc's crisis kicking off a global recession.

As member-state wrangling over the next multi-annual budget gets underway, parliament is keen to remind governments that the time-honoured tradition of sleepy-eyed leaders announcing a deal within spitting distance of the deadline will no longer be possible.Under the Lisbon Treaty rules, in place since late 2009, the parliament has for the first time the right to approve the seven-year budget, with the next phase running from 2014 to 2020.This time it will look a little different to previous negotiations. We all remember - at least the older ones of us do - that we always had a night of the long knives at the end,said German socialist MEP Jutta Haug at budget a discussion last week with Janusz Lewandowski, the EU commissioner in charge of the purse-strings.At some stage, the EU heads of state and government, completely exhausted at around two or four or whenever in the morning, came crawling before the cameras and said Eureka, we've done it!. That is not going to work like that any more because now parliament has a say too.The night of the long knives won't happen this time. If the heads of state and government reach an agreement, that is all well and good. But they need the agreement of the European Parliament, said the deputy.Haug is a member of the Sure committee, a special group set up by the parliament to look into how the next budget should be spent.These MEPs issued a report before the summer, subsequently passed by the entire parliament, calling for a five percent increase in the EU budget from 2014, which they said would amount to about 1.11 percent of the EU's gross national income.At the end of June, the European Commission put forward a formal budget proposal suggesting it be raised by 5 percent to €1,025 billion. A further €58.3 billion of EU spending - for such things as the bloc's development fund and ITER, its fusion reactor project - is not formally a part of the budget.The formal budget and the informal budget would amount to 1.1 percent of GNI, the same as the parliament's position.Lewandowski said the commission had done this deliberately: We have to reckon with the parliament and not just with national governments. We think this is cleverly done - so that we are exactly in the middle between net payers and the parliament. That was intentional.But member states, eight of whom have already formally objected in a letter, see the move less as clever politics and more as a sleight of hand by the commission.So why don't we just put it in the budget then, asked Michael Claus, head of European affairs in the German foreign office, also present at the debate hosted by German region North Rhine Westphalia. Why does it have to be outside the budget? Pointing out that France and Italy and others simply no longer have the money to transfer to Brussels, he said he thought the budget would ultimately lie at around 1.0 percent of GNI - but conceded that the commission's proposal this year round was more realistic than past efforts.

New elements

The 2014-2020 budget, which also includes proposals for an EU-level Value Added Tax and a financial transaction tax - is not likely to be agreed before 2013.The negotiations are always fractious but this round has two new elements - the dire state of public finances in the member states as well as parliament's increased powers.The treaty says member states draw up the details of the budget which have to be approved by MEPs. There is no provision allowing them to make amendments.However, the same article also specifies that MEPs, governments, and the commission shall take any measure necessary to facilitate the adoption of the budget - words likely to be used to the fullest by the parliament.

On September 23, 2011, Mahmoud Abbas officially demanded that the United Nations create Arab state # 22--the second, not first, Arab state within the original 1920 borders of the Mandate of Palestine. Jordan was carved out of some 80% of the total area after 1922.Among other fictions Abbas included in his speech was his purposeful neglect to mention any historical Jewish figures connected to the land. While mentioning Muhammad and Jesus, he deliberately left out the people Jesus was part of.

This was no accident; indeed, it is part of a pattern Arabs have displayed for quite some time now. You see, airplanes are not the only thing that Abbas and his earlier Arafatian predecessors have sought to hijack. Follow me closely below to see what I mean... Now Jesus having been born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of King Herod... is how the story of Jesus's birth begins in the second chapter of the Gospel of Matthew. Of course, if today's politically correct Church leaders were writing this account, it would undoubtedly read a bit differently.But notice, please, the location is Bethlehem of Judea...not the West Bank...not Palestine...but Judea--land of the Jews.Turning the clock back a bit, as the year 2003 began, the Greek Orthodox Metropolitan, Irineos, sought appointment as the Patriarch of Jerusalem. Letters with his signature on them to the late Egyptian ghoul--the West's current darling, Mahmoud Abbas's, good buddy and fellow Fatah terrorist colleague Yasir Arafat--contained, among other things, the following...You are aware of the...disgust...all the Holy Sepulchre fathers feel for the descendants of the crucifiers of our Lord Jesus...crucifiers of your people...Jewish conquerors of the Holy Land of Palestine.Irineos claimed that his 6/17/01 letter, revealed in the Israeli newspaper, Maariv, was a forgery. Unfortunately, there were many other documents of the same flavor making the rounds as well.Irineos' attitude, unfortunately, is not uncommon among many Christians--in the Middle East and elsewhere.Indeed, the quote above is virtually the same as words often spoken by the Greek Catholic Archbishop of Jerusalem, Hilarion Capucci, a few decades earlier. So it's safe to assume that many people share these beliefs.Some simply inherited and modified them from traditional Christian teaching. Others, feeling exposed and vulnerable themselves living among real or potentially hostile dominant Muslim populations, sought/seek common ground with their own off again/on again persecutors by turning the focus on everyone's favorite common demon, the Jew.

Christians played an important role in the nascent Arab nationalist movement in the late 19th and 20th centuries, and the above explanation was certainly one of the main motivating factors. This was not unlike some Jews seeking to be absorbed under the potentially protective, inclusive umbrella of various socialist movements in Christian Europe around the same time.During an earlier visit by the Pope to Israel, the media reported one of many of Mahmoud Abbas's late boss's and colleague's (Arafat) own frequent comments on this subject. Speaking of the Apostle Peter, Arafat explained the allegedly Palestinian--i.e. non-Jewish--identity of Peter & Co. Later day Arafatians like to repeat this as well. Indeed, that was Abbas's message in his remarks about Jesus to the United Nations on September 23rd.Now for a reality check:There was no Arab country nor nation known as Palestine during the time of Jesus (nor at any other time either). The land was known as Iudaea (Judea) and its inhabitants were Judaeans...Jews.As I often feel obliged to repeat, Tacitus, Josephus, and Dio Cassius were famous Roman and Roman-sponsored historians who wrote extensively about Judea's attempt to remain free from the Soviet Union of its day, the conquering Roman Empire. They lived and wrote not long after the two major revolts of the Jews in 66-73 C.E. and 133-135 C.E.Note that they make no mention of this land being called Palestine nor its people Palestinians.And they knew the differences between Jews and Arabs as well.My aim is for this quote to become a virtual mantra for my readers. That's how important the implications of its contents are in the discussion of this topic when the likes of Mahmoud Abbas try to claim aboriginal rights for their version of Palestinians.

EU opinions multiply on Palestinian UN upgrade

Five EU countries have joined France in saying the UN should upgrade Palestine's status. Three have joined the UK in saying No. Others fall in between the two camps or are staying out of the debate for now.Belgium, Greece, Luxembourg, Portugal and Spain in their UN General Assembly speeches over the weekend joined France in backing the upgrade.This session may be remembered as the one in which the general assembly granted Palestine the status of a non-member observer state. But soft language on Israeli settlements and a competing French idea put the scheme in doubt.Ashton at a briefing in New York on Friday (23 September) endorsed a new model for Israeli-Palestinian peace talks put together by the Middle East Quartet - the EU, Russia, the UN and the US.This has been my primary objective - the belief that, through negotiations, we would be able to end this conflict and move to peace and security for the people of Palestine and the people of Israel, she said.The Quartet model is for negotiators to meet in one month's time and commit to ending the 70-year-old conflict by 2013. Follow-up meetings, one of them in Moscow, in three months' and six month's time, are to make substantial progress on territory and security.The Quartet in a joint communique [called] upon the parties to refrain from provocative actions. Unlike its three previous statements on the subject it said nothing on freezing Israeli settlements, however. Meanwhile, Israel’s mainstream media have not pursued an investigation of why the IDF and police initially declared that Friday’s deaths were a result of a traffic accident allegedly caused by speeding. Similarly, Public Security Minister Yitzchak Aharonovitch has not questioned the initial reaction by police.Earlier this year, after a violent pre-dawn raid on an outpost in Samaria, he did not investigate police who initially said that no rubber bullets or violence were used but later were forced to change their explanation following video evidence to the contrary.

After the round of applause to Mahmoud Abbas who asked the U.N. Security Council for the recognition of the Palestinian State, the Quartet tries to postpone the decision hoping for delay with the procedures and asking the parties to go back to the negotiating table.But the speech delivered by the Palestinian President reveals a narrative, an aggressive fantasy that completely denies any possibly of peace, that is the delegitimization of Israel itself.The first misunderstanding is the worst:
Abbas, while promising to respect Israel and to search for peace, insists on the 1948 nakba. For him, the Jewish State is an illegitimate colonial presence. He refers to the nakba, to an occupation since 1948, not since 1967: he says that refugees - like him, he underlined - still keep the keys of their home in Haifa or in Safed (where he was born and from which he fled in 1948 to Syria). They must go home to Israel, not to Palestine. He forgets that they left because of a war staged by five Arab countries against the partition plan.The new Palestinian state, as drawn on the UN website of the Palestinian delegation or in the textbooks of the Palestinian pupils, is the map of Israel.

Abbas said that, out of generosity, the Palestinians accept restricingt their territory to 22 per cent of the Historical Palestine. But he doesn’t say that this Palestine (a name derived from Filistin - a non native, but Mediterranean population - that the Romans gave to the area) is one of the countries designed in 1920 by the League of Nations (like Syria or Iraq) after the collapse of the Turkish Empire. And that it was allotted to the Jewish people in recognition of its ancestral rights. The British Mandate took later on the political decision to split it in order to give part of the land to Jordan.Abbas speaks about an ethnic cleansing that never happened. If ever, his plan affirms that his new Palestinian State will ban any presence of Jews.Then comes the other hateful invention that he builds in his speech step by step: Israel is a racist and apartheid State. This is simply inconceivable. It will suffice to look at the incredible mix of colors, cultures, ethnic groups from the Knesset on to hospitals and schools…Then the lie that it is Israel that hampers the negotiations: since the time of the Arab three nos in Khartoum in 1967, Israel has offered land for peace as envisaged in Resolution 242. Israel withdrew from all the Palestinian cities under the Oslo agreement and 98 per cent of Palestinian Arabs live in the Autonomous areas.The number of checkpoints, that Abbas describes as a sadistic game of the Jews, has actually been reduced by Netanyahu's government – contrary to what Abbas claims – and what is left is designed to control possible terrorists. Israel has all the reasons in the world to do it, as Friday's murders showed..

Another lie: that Israel is impairing the Palestinian economy. Indeed it has propelled it intensively and would certainly do more if the Palestinians had a less aggressive attitude.Then the annexation fence - as Abu Mazen calls it - has actually stopped terrorism. What annexation is he talking about? The territories: Egypt made peace and it obtained Sinai. Israel left Lebanon and Gaza unilaterally and certainly the results have not been very encouraging.The Judea and Samaria communities: they only account for 1.36 per cent of the West Bank. The last settlement approved dates back to 1999. It is true that the natural growth is high, but Netanyahu froze their construction for ten months and he did not receive any signal from the Palestinians about the renewal of negotiations. Today residents actually complain of a de facto freeze.Finally, Abu Mazen states that the Palestinians are only armed with their hopes. He knows all too well that they are armed with arms. Israel has been hit by thousands of missiles fired from Gaza and many of them are long-range Grad, a kind gift from Iran.It would be better to negotiate instead of spreading blame and hatred before the U.N., which always applauds sympathetically the Palestinians, too much of an easy game.

But what should succeed is for them to actually sit down and negotiate with us to get two states for two peoples, a demilitarized Palestinian state that recognizes a Jewish state.Netanyahu added that the PA’s leadership is trying to get away without negotiating. They’re trying to get a state to continue the conflict with Israel rather than to end it. They’re trying to basically detour around peace negotiations by going to the UN and have the automatic majority in the UN General Assembly give them, give them a state. That’s unfortunate.Netanyahu rejected the host’s suggestion that Israel is isolated following the Arab Spring.We’re not isolated in this country, which happens to be the strongest country on earth,he said.I walked yesterday in Central Park. Many, many countries are coming to realize that our demand that we have direct negotiations and that the Palestinians finally recognize a Jewish state and give this tiny country Israel the security requirements it needs, people are getting around to that, added Netanyahu.Responding to a question about whether President Barack Obama is as good a friend of Israel as President George W. Bush was, Netanyahu said: Israel enjoys tremendous bipartisan support. This is what, I think, is one of the great blessings that Israel has in the, in the 21st century. And I think that bipartisan support is expressed by any person who happens to be the president of the United States, including President Obama. Every one of the U.S. presidents represents and acts on the tremendous innate friendship of the American people to Israel.Netanyahu expressed his disappointment at the fact that Abbas refused to recognize the Jewish right to the land of Israel and his claim that Israel has been occupying Palestinian territory for 63 years.Why can’t you recognize our history? he said.Why can’t you recognize the Jewish connection to the Jewish land? And why can’t we work out--recognize the past, seize the future? And I'm willing to do that.Finally, Netanyahu responded to former President Bill Clinton’s remarks last week, who was critical of Netanyahu and said that his government has moved away from the consensus for peace, making a final agreement more difficult.

I regretfully and respectfully disagree with former President Clinton, Netanyahu said. He should know more than anyone else that in the peace conference that he presided in Camp David in 2000 with Arafat and former Prime Minister Barak, it was the Palestinian side who walked away from his own parameters. And in 2008, President Bush can tell you how the Palestinian side, led by President Abbas walked away, just would not close in on another prime minister’s suggestions. And in the two and a half years since then, anybody conversant with the facts knows that I made these offers again and again, called for two states for two peoples, froze the settlements. Nobody did that ever for nearly a year. They didn’t come, they don't want to come, and they go around to the UN.We could arrive in an arrangement that takes care of Israel’s security needs and gives the Palestinians a life of dignity for themselves, but they have to have leaders who are prepared to do it, he added. And you know what, I hope they do, not only for our sake, for their sake, too.

At the end of these attacks, nine Turkish citizens died. One of them is an American citizen of Turkish descent and the American citizen’s rights have not been defended by the United States.Erdogan, who was referring to the incident on the Mavi Marmara in 2010, failed to mention that the IHH terrorists onboard the Marmara, who called themselves peace activists, attacked the IDF soldiers with clubs and knives and attempted to kidnap them.We’ve demanded they apologize, pay compensation, and eliminate the embargo on Gaza once and for all, he said.If these demands are not met, relations between Turkey and Israel will never become normal again. We have nothing against the people of Israel, but against the attitude adopted by the administration of Israel.Erdogan didn’t stop there and also blamed Israel for killing hundreds of thousands of Palestinians.

Typhoon nears Philippines, shuts schools, flights

MANILA, Philippines – Schools in the Philippine capital have suspended classes and many local flights are canceled as the country's main island braces for heavy rains and winds brought by fast-moving Typhoon Nesat.Forecasters say Nesat will make landfall in eastern Aurora province in the next 24 hours and cross Luzon Island north of Manila with winds of up to 133 miles (215 kilometers) per hour.Heavy downpours and wind on Monday prompted the government to shut schools in Manila while airlines canceled flights to central and eastern parts of the country.The coast guard also grounded inter-island ferries, stranding hundreds of travelers.The typhoon bore down on the Philippines exactly two years after nearly 500 people died in the worst flooding in decades in Manila.

Hurricane Hilary still churning up dangerous surf

MIAMI – Forecasters say Hilary remains a dangerous Category 3 storm as it churns up heavy surf along Mexico's Pacific coast.The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Sunday that Hilary had maximum sustained winds near 125 mph (205 kph).The center says Hilary is a small hurricane centered about 395 miles (635 kilometers) south of the southern tip of Baja California. Forecasters say the storm was moving west at 9 mph (15 kph).Hilary is forecast to turn toward the northwest as it weakens. It currently is not expected to make landfall.Meanwhile, two tropical storms were swirling in the Atlantic: Ophelia and Philippe. Neither is expected to affect land.

1 Give ear, O ye heavens, and I will speak; and hear, O earth, the words of my mouth.
2 My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distil as the dew, as the small rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass:
3 Because I will publish the name of the LORD: ascribe ye greatness unto our God.
4 He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.
5 They have corrupted themselves, their spot is not the spot of his children: they are a perverse and crooked generation.
6 Do ye thus requite the LORD, O foolish people and unwise? is not he thy father that hath bought thee? hath he not made thee, and established thee?
7 Remember the days of old, consider the years of many generations: ask thy father, and he will shew thee; thy elders, and they will tell thee.
8 When the most High divided to the nations their inheritance, when he separated the sons of Adam, he set the bounds of the people according to the number of the children of Israel.

33 Their wine is the poison of dragons, and the cruel venom of asps.

35 To me belongeth vengeance, and recompence; their foot shall slide in due time: for the day of their calamity is at hand, and the things that shall come upon them make haste.

5 When the waves of death compassed me, the floods of ungodly men made me afraid;

21 The LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness: according to the cleanness of my hands hath he recompensed me.
22 For I have kept the ways of the LORD, and have not wickedly departed from my God.
23 For all his judgments were before me: and as for his statutes, I did not depart from them.
24 I was also upright before him, and have kept myself from mine iniquity.
25 Therefore the LORD hath recompensed me according to my righteousness; according to my cleanness in his eye sight.
26 With the merciful thou wilt shew thyself merciful, and with the upright man thou wilt shew thyself upright.
27 With the pure thou wilt shew thyself pure; and with the froward thou wilt shew thyself unsavoury.
28 And the afflicted people thou wilt save: but thine eyes are upon the haughty, that thou mayest bring them down.
29 For thou art my lamp, O LORD: and the LORD will lighten my darkness.
30 For by thee I have run through a troop: by my God have I leaped over a wall.
31 As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all them that trust in him.
32 For who is God, save the LORD? and who is a rock, save our God?
33 God is my strength and power: and he maketh my way perfect.
34 He maketh my feet like hinds' feet: and setteth me upon my high places.
35 He teacheth my hands to war; so that a bow of steel is broken by mine arms.
36 Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy gentleness hath made me great.

38 I have pursued mine enemies, and destroyed them; and turned not again until I had consumed them.

41 Thou hast also given me the necks of mine enemies, that I might destroy them that hate me.

44 Thou also hast delivered me from the strivings of my people, thou hast kept me to be head of the heathen: a people which I knew not shall serve me.
45 Strangers shall submit themselves unto me: as soon as they hear, they shall be obedient unto me.
46 Strangers shall fade away, and they shall be afraid out of their close places.
47 The LORD liveth; and blessed be my rock; and exalted be the God of the rock of my salvation.
48 It is God that avengeth me, and that bringeth down the people under me,
49 And that bringeth me forth from mine enemies: thou also hast lifted me up on high above them that rose up against me: thou hast delivered me from the violent man.
50 Therefore I will give thanks unto thee, O LORD, among the heathen, and I will sing praises unto thy name.
51 He is the tower of salvation for his king: and sheweth mercy to his anointed, unto David, and to his seed for evermore.

NEW TESTAMENT PORTION

ROMANS 10:14-21
14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?
15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!
16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?
17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
18 But I say, Have they not heard? Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world.
19 But I say, Did not Israel know? First Moses saith, I will provoke you to jealousy by them that are no people, and by a foolish nation I will anger you.
20 But Esaias is very bold, and saith, I was found of them that sought me not; I was made manifest unto them that asked not after me.
21 But to Israel he saith, All day long I have stretched forth my hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people.

ROMANS 12:14-21
14 Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not.
15 Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.
16 Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.
17 Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.
18 If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.
19 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.
20 Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.
21 Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

HEBREWS 12:28-29
28 Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear:
29 For our God is a consuming fire.
