Andrea Fornella Abbott of Clarksville, Tennessee, was arrested by Nashville airport authorities after she refused to let the TSA fondle her daughter.Abbott said she did not want her daughter to be touched inappropriately or have her crotch grabbed, according to a police report.Her outrage at the security procedure landed her in jail. She was charged with disorderly conduct and released on bond, according to The Tennessean.(She) told me in a very stern voice with quite a bit of attitude that they were not going through that X-ray, Sabrina Birge, an airport security officer, told police.Abbott was told by the woman that naked body porno scanners are 10,000 times safer than your cell phone and uses the same type of radio waves as a sonogram.
Earlier this month, it was revealed that the TSA, under the guidance of the Department of Homeland Security Secretary, deliberately misled the public on the health risks associated with the naked body scanners.The Electronic Privacy Information Center published documents released under a Freedom of Information Act request that show the TSA has been caught covering up a growing number of cases of cancer among TSA airport body scanner operators who conduct the screenings in close proximity to the radiation-emitting devices.

Despite the baseless assurance that the device is safe, Abbott told Birge she did not want her daughter’s naked body revealed by the scanner.She attempted to take cell phone video of the incident but was prevented from doing so.In April, the TSA defended its serial molestation procedures after a video surfaced showing agents fondling a six year old girl at the New Orleans airport.The TSA has admitted that fondling children is government policy.Some folks are asking if the proper procedures were followed. Yes. TSA has reviewed the incident and the security officer in the video followed the current standard operating procedures, a TSA spokesman explained on the agency’s official blog.

Ireland downgraded to junk in spiralling euro-crisis

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - US-based credit rating agency Moody's on Tuesday (11 July) downgraded Ireland's debt to junk status, amid growing market concerns about the stability of the eurozone as the debt crisis reaches Italy and Spain.Citing the growing possibility that Ireland may need a second bailout at the end of 2013 and the increased likelihood that this bailout will require private sector participation, Moody's downgraded the country's rating by one notch to Ba1 status - meaning that its bonds are now considered non-investment grade and pensions funds, for instance, are no longer allowed to purchase them.Moody's made the same move last week when it downgraded Portugal's rating by three notches to Ba2 status. Greece's rating is considerably lower - Caa1 which stands for substantial risk, just three steps before what a rating agency considers default and with no perspective for investors to recover their money.With EU finance ministers insisting - following pressure by Germany, the Netherlands and Finland - on having private creditors involved in a second Greek bailout, Moody's warns that the outlook remains negative and that similar pressure will be felt on each of the countries next in line for a second refinancing.Although Ireland's Ba1 rating indicates a much lower risk of restructuring than Greece's Caa1 rating, the increased possibility of private sector participation has the effect of further discouraging future private sector lending and increases the likelihood that Ireland will be unable to regain market access on sustainable terms in the near future,it said.

The same is true if Greek debt is restructured, even if this is done through financial re-engineering of EU banks, says the ratings agency.European Investment Bank chief Philippe Maystadt on Tuesday said that the eurozone will buy back Greek bonds at market rates, in order to relieve some of its €168 billion debt, whose costs are spiralling due to the bad rating.There is a proposal which is backed by the European Central Bank (ECB), by the European Commission, and which we are going to discuss, which would consist in enabling the European Financial Stability Fund (EFSF) to buy back Greek bonds at market rates,he said on RTL tv following a meeting of eurozone finance ministers on Monday.Maystadt also confirmed the likelihood of a special EU summit in the coming days to deal with the spreading debt crisis that has reached Italy and Spain.Markets abhor uncertainty,he said.When a situation is unclear markets think the worst. Rehn calls for responsibilty over economic rules

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - With the political credibility of the EU in tatters over its handling of the eurozone crisis, monetary affairs commissioner Olli Rehn has appealed to MEPs and governments' responsibility for Europe as they continue to haggle over laws designed to prevent such a crisis happening again.The so-called six pack of legislation will tighten economic governance in the EU but is currently stuck in the legislative pipeline as member states and MEPs battle it out over the automaticity of sanctions for countries that exceed budget deficit and debt limits.
A hoped-for June deadline for agreement has already been missed. The delay in reaching a deal as well as fears that the teeth will be removed from the proposal adds to the growing perception that the EU is unable or unwilling to remedy its problems.There should be a political agreement on it as soon as soon as possible in order to reinforce confidence in the capacity to act of the European Union and to overcome the current sovereign debt crisis, said EU monetary affairs commissioner Olli Rehn, after a meeting of EU finance ministers on Tuesday (12 July).It is important to the medium and short-term fiscal prudence but it is important for the perceptions of today already in the short-term.He called on the sense of responsibility for Europe among MEPs and member states to reach an agreement and said he was ready to offer some of [his] summer holiday if needed.While the automaticity of sanctions is the main sticking point, the parliament itself is divided over the nature of the measures. The socialists want them to contain growth-boosting elements while centre-right and liberal MEPs simply want to concentrate on cutting deficits.I would virtually discount an agreement in July although there have been many twists and turns in the process, one parliament official told this website.

The Polish presidency, which started running the day-to-day affairs of the EU on 1 July, has indicated it is pushing to get the whole package wrapped up in one vote, probably in September.We're really down to differences in one, at most two items and it's really the last centimetre and not the last mile. However, maybe because it's just the last centimetre, it's proving harder work than one might think, said Polish finance minister Jacek Rostowski.The rules are meant to increase Brussels' oversight of public finances in member states, after the parlous state of Greece's finances was revealed in 2010, following years of unnoticed build-up.The commission is keen to see the rules in place with member states already grumbling about fiscal targets set by Brussels under the European semester, a new system of centralised oversight on national economic planning.I want to underline that today we can only encourage the member states to do so (meet their fiscal targets), but tomorrow, provided that the package of economic governance is adopted, we can also enforce our messages, said Rehn.But still there are doubts about whether the beefed up rules will be enough.Speaking to MEPs earlier this month, Rostowski said: We need to develop support programmes and reform programmes of the kind that the [International Monetary Fund] does on a regular basis.Without more comprehensive measures, I don't think the eurozone will be the kind of strong structure that we all need it to be, he said, according to Dow Jones.

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - The EU's internal market will suffer if companies do not put more women on their boards, the EU's gender equality commissioner Viviane Reding said Tuesday (11 July).Reding made the claim while standing alongside Chantal Gaemperle, a board member at French luxury label LVMH, who had just signed an EU-sponsored pledge to increase the number of women in the company.The commissioner said that come March next year she will look to see whether companies have made a clear, precise and measurable evolution towards greater gender balance within their walls.If yes, there will be no need for European legislation. If no, we will have a problem with the internal market, said the commissioner explaining that major companies who work across the EU will be confronted with different national laws on women quotas.Reding's thinking is that if there is a public procurement tender in Spain, for example, Spanish companies who already have to oblige by national quota laws will have an immediate advantage over a German company, which does not.France, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands and Italy all have national rules concerning the representation of women in business.

The commissioner, who wants to boost female boardroom positions to 30 percent by 2015 and to 40 percent by 2020, said she is completely supported by internal market commissioner Michel Barnier.Currently women make up 10 percent of directors and 3 percent of chief executive officers in the EU's largest companies, with the number of women on corporate boards increasing by around half a percentage point per year.
Although Reding has been increasingly vocal about her campaign, to date only seven companies have signed up to the public pledge, up and running since March.And while LVMH is the largest company to have done so, the move represents something of a hollow victory for Reding as a French law, in place since early 2011, requires that the company's board be made up of 40 percent women by 2017.Reding, in her third term as EU commissioner, has experience with these types of uphill battles. She took on the mobile phone companies in her previous commission life using similar tactics. When mobile phone companies ignored her, she regulated to bring prices down.She is supported by the EU parliament, which earlier this month said Brussels should make such quotas mandatory. An EU law in an area dealing with employment and social policy is likely to be controversial among member states, however.

The IDF retaliated overnight Wednesday to the latest firing of Kassam rockets from the Gaza region and attacked several terror targets in the Gaza Strip.The IDF Spokesperson confirmed the attacks and said that IAF aircraft had hit two smuggling tunnels in southern Gaza and an additional terrorist tunnel northern Gaza. All three targets were directly hit, and all aircraft returned to their base safely.The IDF will not tolerate any attempt to harm Israeli citizens or soldiers, and will know to respond decisively to terrorist activity or firing of rockets from the Gaza Strip where and when it deems fit, said the Spokesperson’s statement. The Hamas terrorist organization bears responsibility for the attacks.Earlier on Wednesday, a rocket launched from Gaza hit a southern Israeli community. The IDF website said the community was located within the Eshkol Regional Council and was home to approximately 10,000 residents. There were no physical injuries or damage to property in the attack.Two Kassam rockets were also fired on Tuesday evening from Gaza, landing in the Sdot Negev Regional Council area. One rocket caused light damage to a house in a local kibbutz. The second rocket landed in an open area.

A short time later, a mortar shell fired by terrorists from the Gaza region landed and exploded in an open area near a kibbutz in the western Negev. America's new secretary of defense, Leon Panetta, has a reputation for candor. Panetta was characteristically outspoken about Iranian involvement in support of Shiite insurgents in Iraq. During his visit to Iraq and after missiles were fired from a Shiite neighborhood into the protected Green Zone of the city, Panetta blamed Iran for supporting the insurgents and warned:We cannot sit back and simply allow this to continue to happen, he said of Iran’s efforts to arm Iraqi insurgents. “This is not something we’re going to walk away from. It’s something we’re going to take on head on.We are very concerned about Iran and the weapons they are providing to extremists here in Iraq.We're seeing more of those weapons going in from Iran, and they've really hurt us.While these accusations have been made before by American military sources, this time the accusations came from the very top of the American security establishment.Iran was quick to deny any involvement and claimed that the accusations were baseless, intended to sow discord among the countries in the region and reflected an American need to cover up its failure.

However, the US Defense Department made sure to drive home to reporters that the US was not grasping at straws in blaming Iran. The US Defense Department reported a tour conducted by Army Major General Jeff Buchanan, who escorted journalists on a visit to Joint Task Force Troy, a professional team that knew how to identify the origin of explosives even if they were made to look like improvised homemade devices.
The verdict:And the forensic teams can categorically state that the weapons are from Iran. In one case, an IRAM built in Iran was turned over to the Quds Force – part of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard – and then given to an Iraqi extremist in Kitab Hezbollah, a terrorist group that is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Quds Force.The report also quotes Army general Lloyd J Austin III who claims that the Iranians were motivated by a desire to show that they had driven the Americans from Iraq.What does the United States expect to get from going up front with the warnings about Iran? Perhaps the US is getting around to chastising Iran militarily, but public sentiment in the United States militates against it. Perhaps it means that the US will go after the Shiite militias in Iraq that are backed by Iran.Another theory is that the US wants to signal the Iraqi government not to get too cozy with Iran. Iraq has become Iran's third largest trading partner and has recently signed a trading agreement lifting tariffs with Tehran. It is not certain that Panetta's warnings will influence the Shiite leadership in Baghdad. At best they may want the US to balance Iran.One can speculate on a third theory that harks back to the days of Ronald Reagan. Reagan could not understand why the Soviet Union was allowed to pin down the United States by backing guerrilla movements, while the United States abstained from similar tactics. By this reasoning, if the Iranians are arming anti-American guerrillas, the United States could possibly play tit-for-tat.

According to the Arab publication Al-Sharq Al-Awsat, published in London, a senior Iranian officer claimed that his country reserved the right to attack bases of Iranian Kurdish rebels in Iraq and accused the Kurdistan regional government president Massoud Barzani of supporting the rebels by providing training bases:We will not allow the terrorists to settle on the Iraqi territory with the support of the United States and the Zionist regime for the purpose of attacking Iran. Japan and South Korea at Risk from Typhoon Mo-an

Japan and South Korea could see damage from a typhoon that is gearing up in the Pacific this week. A tropical storm that has gained power and reached typhoon status to become Typhoon Ma-on could unleash flooding and destruction upon two countries already reeling from natural disaster.By the end of the week Ma-on could wreak havoc on the southern part of Korea and southwestern Japan, bringing the potential for high winds and heavy rains at the site of the already-battered tsunami and nuclear disaster site in Honshu, Japan and adding to flooding that has been slamming South Korea.According to Accuweather.com, the tropical storm turned typhoon is expected to strengthen and intensify during the weekend. It was classified as a full-fledged typhoon on Wednesday. Ma-on is expected to veer north, bringing heavy flooding and damaging winds to parts of Japan and South Korea.Japan and South Korea have already seen plenty of disaster this year and the Korean peninsula is currently dealing with devastating floods that have caused landslides and flooded farmland and more than 350 homes. Rainfall in the western South Korea region topped 15 inches over two days early this week. One area in southwestern South Korea saw 19 inches of rain late last week and the previous weekend saw a 24-hour period of rain that measured 13 inches on Jinju.

As of Monday, 12 people had already died from the most recent torrential rain in South Korea after being crushed by landslides. The end of June saw Typhoon Meari bring excessive rain that has contributed to the flooding that is still going on in the Korean peninsula. Another typhoon will only add to that misery.Japan's northeast has suffered this year already after the 9.0 Tohoku Earthquake in March that spawned a deadly tsunami and brought about nuclear crisis within the country. Damage from a typhoon will only stretch the resources of a country that is already struggling to recover.Ma-on could elevate to super typhoon status while in the open sea and it is expected to intensify while in the Philippine Sea as it continues its westerly path. It is expected to turn north or northwest which will bring it in direct line with southern Japan and southern Korea. FIRST PERSON | Summer in Las Vegas is not only warmer, it is usually wetter as well. July marks the beginning of monsoon season, and mother nature did not wait to put on a show once July arrived in the Las Vegas Valley. Rain arrived as soon as the calendar turned to the first day of flash flood season; now the city is hearing emergency warnings on the radio more often than Katy Perry.Many visitors to Las Vegas are not ready for the extreme weather conditions this time of year, but there are guidelines to follow, especially as July 7-10 features rain in the National Weather Service forecast for Las Vegas.Las Vegas is not as bad as it once was when it comes to flash flooding, but there are still bad areas to avoid. Some of the worst areas are the new swaths of homes that were not fully developed before the real estate crash in 2008. Areas in Southern Highlands and North Las Vegas now see flash flooding any time there is substantial rainfall.The flash flood potential rating posted on the National Weather Service site shows two areas at serious risk. Areas to the south and to the north are the two appear in red for the next couple of days. Red represents the highest potential for flash flooding.

These areas are still lacking flood channels and are the most likely candidates to experience flash flooding. The summer monsoon season can catch drivers off guard easily. A typical monsoon can drop up to 2 inches in less than 15 minutes, turning a low-lying area into a raging river in a matter of minutes.Another aspect of the summer monsoon season is the phenomenon known as the Haboob. A Haboob, Arabic for a strong wind or wind phenomenon, takes place when a monsoon breaks out on the desert floor and pelts the loose silt of the desert, raising a massive dust storm up to 3,000 feet high. Phoenix and other Arizona cities suffered their first Haboob of the season Wednesday. The dust cloud darkened the skies in seconds, enveloping the cities in dust and silt.Our Amazing Planet gives Phoenix the honor as the Haboob capital of the world. Although Phoenix has several Haboobs a year, the storm is also common in the Sahara Desert in Africa and in Iraq, among other dry, desolate places around the world.Las Vegas has small experience with Haboobs but the area is known more for flash floods. Rights Group Urges Congress To Scrap Privacy Busting Internet Bill Steve Watson Infowars.com July 13, 2011 Internet privacy

A prominent online rights group has urged US lawmakers to scrap a proposal that would see all internet providers required by federal law to store information on their customers.The Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) appealed before a House Judiciary Committee hearing this week, asking that Congress recognize the fact that retaining identifying information would put at risk 99.9% of Internet users.The legislation in question is H.R. 1981, a bill to address concerns about children pornography. EPIC is concerned, however, over provisions within the bill that will require Internet Service Providers to store temporarily assigned IP addresses for future government use.EPIC President Marc Rotenberg pointed out that it is more prudent to seek data minimization rather than data retention, in the wake of increased risk of data breaches and identity theft. Rotenberg noted that enforced data retention would make ISPs more vulnerable to hackers, citing the LulzSec group, which recently claimed responsibility for temporarily shutting down a CIA website and other high-profile hacks.Minimizing stored user data reduces incentives for hackers to attack data storage systems by reducing the amount of data available to steal. Minimization also reduces the costs of data breaches, Rotenberg said in prepared testimony.Rotenberg suggested that the data could be used to bring criminal charges that were unrelated to child pornography, a concern that was shared by Michigan Rep. John Conyers.

Although this data retention requirement has been introduced as part of a bill focused on child sexual exploitation, there is no evidence to suggest that the majority of law enforcement requests for customer subscriber information relate to child protection cases. Rotenberg argued.Advocates for the legislation include the National Sheriffs’ Association, which has said it strongly supports mandatory data retention. The bill has also attracted endorsements from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, as well as the FBI.It would give the government sweeping authority to mandate the collection and retention of personal information obtained by business from their customers, or generated by the business in the course of providing services, for subsequent examination without any reason to believe that information is relevant or necessary for a criminal investigation, Rotenberg further testified.The EPIC President also noted that the bill would create a new immunity that hasn’t previously existed under the Wiretap Act, allowing ISPs to escape liability if problems resulted.By extending blanket immunity and a good faith defense to these ISPs, Congress would foreclose the ability for consumers to seek damages under [the Electronic Communications Privacy Act] for violations of that law,Instead, ISPs would be free to share their retained IP address information with law enforcement at any time, even if the current legal exceptions, such as those for voluntary disclosure, are not met. Rotenberg said.EPIC wishes to see the relevant sections of the bill re-written by House Judiciary Committee Chairman Lamar Smith (R-Texas) and Rep. Senator Jim DeMint has accused President Barack Obama and Timothy Geithner of deliberately fostering panic in order to push through an agreement that would allow the debt ceiling to be raised, accusing the White House of burning the clock in order to push a decision close to the deadline, echoing how Congress was threatened with martial law in America before the 2008 bailout vote.On Sunday Treasury Secretary Geithner painted a grim picture of the so-called economic recovery, telling NBC’s Meet the Press, it’s going to feel very hard, harder than anything they’ve experienced in their lifetime now, for a long time to come.Geithner also told Fox News that the US would be forced into default if an agreement on raising the debt ceiling was not reached.Accusing Geithner of playing chicken little by irresponsibly spreading fear of a catastrophe, DeMint said the administration was deliberately fanning the flames of panic in order to secure a deal on its own terms.

It’s not ideal but we don’t need to panic and rush into a deal and the President has actually been burning the clock with these secret negotiations pushing us against a deadline so he can create this panic, DeMint told NBC’s The Today Show.We need to keep calm and if the President would work with us on some reasonable cuts, we’ll work with him on giving him an increase on the debt limit. Now is not the time to panic and do something else that is going to make our economy worse and cost us most jobs, he added.Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke echoed Geithner’s warning today, telling Congress that if it fails to raise the debt ceiling by August 2, the economic fallout could be catastrophic,self defeating and dire.We are not going to default, we have enough tax revenue to pay our bills, said DeMint.It certainly will be disruptive if we continue going on the track we’re going on right now. In an effort to stampede lawmakers into voting for the bailout bill, Paulson threatened lawmakers with martial law in America if the legislation failed to pass.Senator James Inhofe later confirmed that Paulson told members of Congress the crisis would be far worse than the great depression if Congress didn’t authorize the bill to buy out toxic debt, a proposal which he abandoned the day after he got the money, added Inhofe, referring to how immediately after it was approved, Paulson announced that the bailout money would not be used to buy up toxic debt but would instead be injected directly into banks like Goldman Sachs, of which he was a former CEO.Senator DeMint has also stated his opposition to a draconian proposal by Republican Senator Mitch McConnell that would hand the Obama administration the authority to raise the debt ceiling by giving them power of the purse.Republicans weren’t elected last November to make it easier to spend and borrow and add to our debt, DeMint told CBS’ The Early Show Wednesday.The US Constitution clearly states that Congress has the exclusive authority to raise and spend money. If there is a summit, that would suggest there is more nervousness about the stability of the euro than we thought.The EU is testing 91 major banks to see how they would cope if there was a 0.5 percent contraction in the eurozone economy, a 15 percent drop in stock markets and defaults on sovereign debt.The results are due out amid nervousness on the financial markets over a potential default in Greece and concerns if Italy and Spain will be able to manage their borrowing.The bank results - designed originally to restore faith in the EU's financial sector - could make matters worse.An internal EU document obtained by Bloomberg said the risk should not be underestimated that private firms will use the published data to run their own stress tests and to reach more critical results than the EU officials.A letter from the German banking association, the ZKA, to the EU-level bank body, the EBA, said: Given the tense situation which already exists in money and capital markets, we believe publishing the results with the present level of detail would exacerbate the sovereign debt crisis.

Commission to propose new EU anti-terrorism tool

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - The European Commission will on Wednesday (12 July) suggest that the EU sets up its own financial data analysis system, allowing the EU to stop transferring bulk data to the US for anti-terrorism purposes.It is set to put forward three options and their corresponding budgets for the establishment of an EU Terrorism Finance Tracking System (TFTS), ranging from €33 million to €47 million to set up and another €7 million to €11 million a year to operate, according to a draft proposal seen by EUobserver.Having a legal and technical framework for extraction of data on EU territory was one of the conditions put by MEPs last year when approving the controversial Swift agreement.At the time MEPs only reluctantly endorsed this EU-US data sharing agreement. This legalised a former covert programme established in 2001 which allowed American authorities to secretly go through European bank transactions when searching for terrorism finance leads.The most expensive option, in the EU commission's view, would also be the broadest in scope: a brand-new Financial Intelligence Unit co-ordination service, at an estimated cost of €47 million to set up and another €11 million a year to maintain.

The searches through bulk data from financial messaging companies such as Swift would be carried out by each national financial unit, except for the EU-related ones or the ones requested by other countries, such as the US, which would be carried out by the FIU Platform. This would be based either in the Hague, within the premises of the EU police agency Europol or in Tallinn, where the new IT agency for storage of data is being set up.The second option, for €40.5 million in initial costs and another €9 million each year, would have the system set up in the premises of the Hague-based EU police agency Europol and would not only go through the bulk data for specific leads, but also give an own analysis and match the results with other intelligence. Member states could send their own analysts to 'second' the Europol experts, the draft adds.Thirdly, the EU commission offers a data-extraction only service, which would also be the cheapest: €33 million to set up and €7 million to maintain. This option would not allow the Europol experts to analyse the search results and compare them with other intelligence when the requests come from other member states. But they would be able to do so when the information is requested by other EU institutions, the US or other countries.The reflection paper also throws in the possibility of extending the scope of such a programme to money laundering and other forms of organised crime and cover other providers and types of financial messages, as well as expanding to national transactions too, not just international ones.It concludes that important choices and decisions are still be to be made in respect to fundamental rights, technical and legal limitations and also the fact that the cost of setting it up will have to be covered by the EU's next multi-annual budget, which some member states want trimmed.

Having the cost put on the table before deciding to set up a new tool is a good policy, says Dutch Liberal MEP Sophie in't Veld, who on Tuesday presented her report on how much anti-terrorism programmes cost in the EU.It's essential to have these figures now, so that those who want an EU TFTP will have to explain to citizens why it is more important to spend money on these systems instead of healthcare, education, infrastructure, she said.Noting that in the past 10 years, there was a 20-fold increase in EU funding devoted to anti-terrorism programmes, the Liberal MEP said this trend had to be reversed, especially at a time when budgets are being cut everywhere in Europe.But she warned against a backdoor policy shift and the establishment of an EU-wide terrorism finance tracking programme.Her German colleague Alexander Alvaro, who drafted the Parliament's view on the Swift agreement, also said that MEPs had never asked for an EU TFTP.What we're calling for is just a software to extract data and punctually send it to US - to avoid the transfer of bulk data. Bush said he could not comply with a request by the Saudi foreign minister for a chance to clear the Arab kingdom’s name because publication of the report could hurt U.S. intelligence operations, according to news reports.Sources revealed that a redacted section of the report describes a money trail between Saudi Arabia and supporters of al-Qaeda.Graham failed to mention that the CIA and Pakistan’s ISI also funded groups in Afghanistan that would ultimately be called al-Qaeda. This relationship is one likely reason Bush withheld information on the attacks from Congress.Between 1978 and 1992, the US government poured at least US$6 billion (some estimates range as high as $20 billion) worth of arms, training and funds to prop up the mujaheddin factions, writes Norm Dixon. Other Western governments, as well as oil-rich Saudi Arabia, kicked in as much again. Wealthy Arab fanatics, like Osama bin Laden, provided millions more.

A new Rasmussen poll reveals that less than one quarter of voters believe that the US should continue military action in Libya.The survey of 1,000 likely voters, conducted on July 10-11, shows that support for Obama’s kinetic military action against the Qaddafi regime and the people of Libya has fallen by a huge nineteen percentage points since late March, when forty three percent expressed support following a televised speech by the president.The White House has been loathe to admit the fact that the attack on Libya is a war as it would stymy the billions of dollars the Pentagon has creatively shifted around to fund the bombardment. However, the US State Department issued a statement declaring that the United States will continue efforts as part of a North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) coalition to enforce a U.N. Security Council-authorized no-fly zone in Libya designed to protect civilians under threat of attack.As we reported last week, Israeli intelligence sources based in Washington have indicated that the US and France have set a deadline of September 2nd to topple Qaddafi, with NATO powers ready to inflict a crushing blow if the Libyan leader refuses to step down peacefully.NATO is reportedly preparing for a full ground invasion in order to oversee a final coup de grace that will manifest itself as a large-scale, all-out military bid to kill or oust Qaddafi.NATO powers are looking to end the war in Libya within the next two months so that the conflict will be over by the time Barack Obama and French President Nicolas Sarkozy convene for a crucial Israeli-Palestine peace summit in Paris on September 2nd. Obama and Sarkozy’s credibility as peacemakers will be completely undermined if they are still overseeing attacks on Libya, which they assured the world, over four months ago, would be completed within days.

IDF Retaliates, Attacks Gaza Weapons Sites

Aircraft belonging to the Israeli Air Force attacked two weapon manufacturing sites in the Gaza region early Wednesday morning (Israel local time).The IDF Spokesman said in a statement that direct hits were detected and that secondary explosions were also heard. The Israeli aircraft returned to their bases safely.The attack came in response to Tuesday evening’s rocket attack by Gaza-based terrorists, who had fired two Kassam rockets into southern Israel.Both rockets landed in the Sdot Negev Regional Council area, with one rocket causing light damage to a house in a local kibbutz. The second rocket landed in an open area.A short time later, a mortar shell fired by terrorists from the Gaza region landed and exploded in an open area near a kibbutz in the western Negev. There were no casualties or damage.The IDF will not tolerate any attempt to harm Israeli citizens and will continue to act decisively against any party which carries out terror against Israel, the IDF Spokesperson’s statement said.Tuesday’s rocket attack was the second time in three days that terrorists in Hamas-controlled Gaza attacked Israel with rockets and mortars. On Saturday, two rockets were launched at Israel and landed south of Ashkelon. The Palestinian Authority leadership said on Tuesday it holds the United States responsible for Israel’s racist policies, which it claimed had sabotaged the peace process, Reuters reported.The Palestine Liberation Organization’s (PLO) executive committee convened in Ramallah, after Monday’s meeting of the Quartet in Washington failed to announce any progress towards reviving peace talks.The PLO said in a statement released after its meeting that recent developments had confirmed the need for the PA to ask the UN General Assembly for international recognition of a Palestinian state in September.The PLO also said that Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s government aims to prevent any resumption of negotiations and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.The only option facing the world today, especially the United States, is to use all tools to oblige the occupiers to halt their racist, expansionary policy, read the statement. France Reaches Out to Qadaffi

France has split with NATO's official Libya policy and is openly calling for negotiations with Muammar Qaddafi, the Telegraph reports.The French government has been passing messages to the Libyan leader, reports the British newspaper, and French defence minister Gerard Longuet has said it is time to get around the table.
France's position is a clear departure with NATO and the US, who both explicitly stated that Qaddafi must leave office.In an e-mailed statement, Foreign Ministry spokesman Bernard Valero confirmed that France had contacted Qaddafi.We are passing him messages in liaison with the National Transitional Council and our allies, Valero wrote, contradicting claims from Qaddafi's son that the French were bypassing Libyan rebel forces.Some observers say the French are angry about the war dragging on and may be growing frustrated by the Libyan rebels. Rebels forces have taken several mountain hamlets in the Nusafa region and are clamouring for an offensive into Qaddafi's increasingly fortified strongholds around Tripoli. But many question how the rebels, overextended and still outgunned, can hope to mount a major offensive without significant - and unlikely - support from NATO.The Telegraph cited an unnamed Western diplomat who said France was sending a message to the rebels.This despite their decision earlier today to continue arming the rebels.Meanwhile, Prime Minister Al Baghdadi Ali al-Mahmoudi announced today that the Libyan government would be ready to negotiate without Qaddafi, adding we are ready to negotiate without condition.(IsraelNationalNews.com)

Stifling heat grips half U.S., some records set

CHICAGO (Reuters) – Stifling heat gripped half of the continental United States on Tuesday with record high temperatures set in some parts of the Northeast.The National Weather Service issued heat warnings or advisories for 24 states stretching from parts of Texas and Oklahoma to the plains, the Mississippi Valley and the east coast.Newark, New Jersey temperatures hovered at 99 degrees, Islip, New York at 93 degrees, and the mercury hit 97 degrees at John F. Kennedy airport in New York. According to the weather service these are record highs for July 12.But the heat will be short-lived on the east coast. For the most part it's a one day heat wave, said Chris Vaccaro, a spokesman for the weather service.It was a different story in other parts of the country.In Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, temperatures were approaching 100 degrees for the 14th consecutive day.It feels like an easy-bake oven outside, said Lara O'Leary, the spokeswoman for Emergency Medical Services Authority, Oklahoma's largest ambulance service.O'Leary said her agency responded to 110 heat related emergencies since the first heat alert was issued on June 17th.

Even the heartiest of Oklahoman's is having trouble handling the heat, said O'Leary. She admitted experiencing heat exhaustion while playing with her 8-year-old son outside on Monday.I felt a little dizzy and I went inside and cooled down, she said.
Temperatures in Columbia, South Carolina, could hit 100 degrees on Tuesday with heat index values near 115 degrees.The average high temperature for Columbia since June 1 has been 95 degrees, the second highest average high for this period in more than 100 years, according Hope Mizzell, South Carolina's State Climatologist. And the heat was intensifying the drought conditions the entire state was experiencing.The South Carolina Drought Response Committee will meet on Thursday, and there's a chance at least half of the state could be upgraded to a severe drought status then, said Mizzell.Air quality alerts were also in effect on the east coast in parts of New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, and Georgia.In addition to the sweltering heat, scattered thunderstorms that could produce damaging winds and hail were in the forecast from southern Nebraska to northern Kansas to parts of the mid-Atlantic from Southern Virginia to North Carolina.This was the same system that hit the Chicago area yesterday leaving a record 868,000 customers without power.As of midafternoon, 307,000 customers were still without power Tuesday, according to ComEd, the utility company servicing the area.We have asked for support from neighboring utilities, said Tony Hernandez, a ComEd spokesman, who also said 900 crews are working around the clock.Crews from Wisconsin, Indiana and Michigan were already in the area. LAGOS, Nigeria – Nigerian emergency authorities say at least 29 people have died in weekend floods in two cities of Africa's most populous nation.A spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency said Tuesday that at least 20 people died in the commercial capital of Lagos during unusually heavy rains Sunday.Yushau Shuaib said nine more people died in the city of Katsina, which saw heavy rains Friday evening.He said the floods displaced more than 100 people in Katsina. Lagos shut down its public schools Monday.The agency has warned that rains will be heavier this year than last year. Last year's rains displaced about 500,000 people nationwide.The rainy season lasts from June to September. Poor drainage systems aggravate its impact.

Hawaiian Airlines to Osaka as Japan demand rebounds

WASHINGTON (AFP) – Hawaiian Airlines on Tuesday launched flights to Osaka, expanding service to Japan as US carriers conclude that passenger traffic has recovered from the March 11 quake-tsunami mega-disaster.Hawaiian Airlines began daily service between Kansai International Airport and Honolulu, part of an Asia-focused growth strategy for the carrier that since late 2010 has started flights to Tokyo's Haneda and Seoul's Incheon airports.Mark Dunkerley, Hawaiian Airlines' president and CEO, said that passenger numbers between Tokyo and Honolulu fell 20 to 30 percent after the tsunami tragedy but that deficit has all been eradicated at this stage.Hawaiian Airlines announced the Osaka service in February and concluded that the long-term prospects had not changed, with some Japanese in fact drawn to the United States thanks to the strong yen against the dollar.Kansai International Airport, built on an artificial island in 1994, is an international gateway for the western region of Japan including Osaka, Kyoto and Kobe. But the airport has faced financial woes as carriers prioritize Tokyo.Dunkerley said that Hawaiian decided that Kansai was a very distinct market and that we couldn't properly claim to be serving Japan just by serving one destination.Japan is not a homogenous country without any sort of differentiation, he told AFP. It would be akin to thinking in the United States of there being no difference between New York and Los Angeles.But while Hawaii is a favorite holiday destination for Japanese, US legacy carriers serving the continental United States initially cut back on flights in the aftermath of the earthquake.American Airlines and Delta Air Lines temporarily shut service to Haneda airport, which they had launched with heavy promotional campaigns before the earthquake.

Haneda, primarily a domestic airport, is much closer to central Tokyo than Narita -- the main international gateway to the metropolis. Japan opened up Haneda to long-haul flights in hopes of stimulating demand, with American, Delta and Hawaiian winning the US slots.American has resumed service to Haneda from New York and Delta from Los Angeles. But Delta has not restarted flights to Haneda from Detroit, saying that the route is heavily reliant on US East Coast business travel, which remains down.Delta received a waiver until April 2012 from the US Department of Transportation, whose rules required carriers to use the hard-fought Haneda slots or lose them.

Coffins of Habsburgs arrive in Austria JULY 12,11

MARIAZELL, Austria (AP) — The coffins of the son of Austria's last emperor and his wife have been brought to Austria and are lying in state at a cathedral associated with their dynasty.Family members of the late Otto Von Habsburg and his wife Regina met the coffins as they arrived Tuesday evening at the Mariazell basilica, site of Habsburg marriages, requiems and other ceremonies.The coffins are to be buried Saturday in the Emperor Tomb in Vienna, below the Austrian capital's Capuchin Church.
Habsburg died on July 4 at age 98 in his villa in Poecking in southern Germany. His wife, Regina, died last year.The dynasty ruled for more than seven centuries until Austria abolished the monarchy at the end of World War I.

Calif. woman denies aiding Pakistan nuke project

WASHINGTON (AP) — A wealthy San Francisco-area suburbanite on Tuesday rebutted charges that she was the ringleader of a scheme to illegally export special paint used in the construction of a Pakistani nuclear plant, a project some Western experts fear will produce plutonium for the country's expanding nuclear arsenal.Xu Wang, 51, was arrested at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson airport last month, court records show, as she and her family were headed to Italy to celebrate her oldest daughter's graduation from prep school before starting Princeton in the fall. Wang has been in custody ever since.At a detention hearing in federal court here, Wang's lawyers argued that charges against her were technical, that she was at worst peripherally involved in the scheme and that any connection between the case against her and the global spread of nuclear weapons was purely speculative.This case is about paint, said attorney Bruce Baird, as his client sat at the defendant's table in short-sleeve prison garb. ...One thing we know for sure, it's not a case representing a threat to America or a threat of nuclear proliferation.U.S. Magistrate Judge Deborah Robinson on Tuesday denied the government's request that Wang be held without bond, but stayed the order pending a hearing Wednesday to set the terms of her release. She and her husband had pledged to put up their $2.3 million home in Hillsborough, Calif., as collateral.Wang, who has a doctorate in physics from the University of California, Santa Cruz, was charged with three counts of violating U.S. export laws and one count of conspiracy in connection a Chinese government-owned company's purchase of 625 gallons of paint to Pakistan's Chashma II nuclear power plant. The felony charges carry a maximum penalty of 65 years in prison and fines of more than $1 million.

The case highlights China's commercial ties to Pakistan's nuclear program. Islamabad, which has never signed the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, first tested a nuclear weapon in 1998 and is estimated to have built between 70 and 120 warheads in its ongoing arms race with India.The Wang case also demonstrates the challenges prosecutors can face enforcing economic sanctions, which often involve the sale of so-called dual-use technology that can have civilian as well as military purposes.
Judge Robinson Tuesday appeared skeptical, questioning the prosecution's assertion that the case had serious national security implications.This is not latex paint, said assistant U.S. Attorney G. Michael Harvey. This is a very sophisticated paint, which has been tested and certified for use inside the containment facility of a nuclear reactor.After she and her husband sold their paint import-export business to the Pittsburgh-based PPG Industries in 2006 for more than $17 million, the U.S. company hired her to run its wholly-owned Chinese subsidiary, PPG Paints Trading Co.

A short time later, the indictment says, the U.S. government rejected an application from PPG for a license to sell paint to an unnamed government-owned Chinese company, for use on the steel lining of the containment area of Chashma II.Some U.S. experts say there is evidence Pakistan is building a plant near Chashma II to take spent fuel from the reactor and turn it into weapons grade plutonium.When Wang told the Chinese buyers about the denial, court papers show, they complained they would be forced to scrape off PPG paint they had already applied, delaying the project. They angrily threatened to sue.Prosecutors say Wang responded that the company should pretend this never happened and buy the paint through a front company. The government claims another employee later came up with a plan to have the order placed through a Chinese construction company building a nuclear plant in Dalian, China. China is not subject to the same export controls.When a co-worker asked what would happen if the U.S. discovered the ruse, the indictment says, Wang replied: U.S. government can't really touch us...The most that will ever happen to me is that I will not travel to the U.S. anymore. I don't need to travel to the U.S. I don't care. It's okay.PPG Industries pled guilty in December to conspiring to violate export regulations in connection with the sale of the paint used in construction of Chashma II, and was hit with $3.75 million in fines.Wang was fired by PPG Industries in 2007, her indictment did not come until June.Wang's husband, Chunlin Yiang, sat in the courtroom Tuesday and, at one point, waved at his wife. In a letter to the court, he said he and his wife were committed to remaining in the United States because of their two daughters.

A younger daughter, 13, suffers from Asperger's Syndrome, he said, and is attending a school for children with learning disabilities. We want them to achieve whatever they can achieve and live the American dream, he wrote.The charges against Wang come at a time when the U.S. and Pakistan are trying to overcome deep mutual distrust in their joint fight against militant extremists. And it marked at least the second time in four months that the U.S. has charged someone with smuggling restricted technology to Pakistan's nuclear program.The U.S. announced in March that it was charging a Pakistani man living in Maryland with illegally buying sensitive technology for his country's nuclear program. The indictment charged Nadeem Akhtar, 45, of Silver Spring with buying radiation detection devices, resins for coolant water purification and calibration devices for the Chashma nuclear power project and perhaps other, weapons-related facilities.
