HANOVER -- About 200 people, mostly seniors, attended a public meeting Monday in Hanover about a deal that might see 41 long-term care spaces moved from Hanover to Chesley.Many opposed the proposal that would see the beds sold by Hanover Care Centre to Capricorn Investments Limited, owner of the Elgin Abbey care centre Chesley. Many were con-c erned about elderly people having to move.Kim White a Ministry of Health and Long-Term care representative, said afterward she will take local concerns to officials in Toronto.I have to somehow convey the passion that was evident in this room today. Everybody spoke not only of personal experiences but businesses experiences and very much a community focus and so it's really important that we not only convey the number of people but the passion of all of those speakers, White said. So we tried to capture as much as we could on paper but I will also be doing a verbal report to the director in Toronto so that we again can convey that this community has some significant concerns about this and here are their reasons and (that) they also have some questions about the process and so it behooves the ministry to also respond to the questions that were nicely captured by the mayor.Hanover Mayor Kathi Maskell said people in care shouldn't have to move to see the service continue.The Town of Hanover wants to ensure the needs of people in our long-term care health system are not trumped by financial business decisions at the expense of our community and our most vulnerable residents, those who in the past have helped to build the community that we enjoy in the present, she said.

These citizens don't deserve to be forced from their residence without input, consultation or caring, she said.Life is always about personal relationships and personal relationships are critical to the well-being of long-term care residents. Today, that well-being is threatened. It's threatened by the slow erosion of close bonds with family and friends due to reduced communication and there is not a doubt that there will be fewer visits when the distance is increased. That well-being is being threatened by loss of community connection and familiar surroundings.In rural Ontario, and small town Ontario, those community connections are vital and they help to stave off the depression that sometimes, often, accompanies old age.Concerned individuals took to the microphone following Maskell's presentation expressing their concerns about the possible loss of beds.Members of the public shared concerns with not being in the community where they want to live, taxi costs, loss of connection to family, friends and community, not being near their doctor and being shifted form one care facility to another where the scenery is unfamiliar.White said the purchaser and the seller need to follow a certain process before any deal can be completed. Discussions will continue with the community and officials, while comments from the meeting will be taken to the ministry's licensing department in Toronto.White added anyone with concerns or comments may email or write a letter to the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, the mayor, the South West Local Health Integration Network.

NASSAU (Reuters) – Hurricane Irene washed away homes in the Bahamas on Thursday as the powerful storm wielding battering winds and rain headed toward the eastern seaboard including densely populated New York and New England.U.S. emergency officials have urged millions of people from the Carolinas north to New England to be on the alert for Irene, now a major Category 3 storm, which is forecast to rake up the coast starting Saturday.New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the United States' most populous city was bracing to experience at least tropical storm conditions and flooding starting on Sunday from Irene, which could hit Long Island as a Category 2 hurricane.We hope for the best but prepare for the worst, Bloomberg told a news conference, adding some evacuations could be possible. The city is positioning rescue boats and helicopters, working to minimize street flooding and gearing up at hospitals.The city has already seen the power of Mother Nature once this week, and Mother Nature may not be done with us yet,Bloomberg said, referring to the 5.8 magnitude earthquake that shook the East Coast on Tuesday.The northern part of the North Carolina coast went on a hurricane watch in anticipation of Irene's forecast landfall on Saturday evening in the state's eastern Outer Banks barrier islands, which are popular with vacationers in the summer.Weather Underground private forecaster Rob Carver wrote, I think that there is a 75 percent chance Irene's secondary landfall will be somewhere between (New York's) JFK airport and Cape Cod ... North Carolina authorities have already started evacuations from exposed barrier islands, while residents along the East Coast rushed to stock up on food and water supplies, boarded up windows and secured roofs, vehicles and boats.Irene, which already caused the deaths this week of at least one person in Puerto Rico and two in the Dominican Republic, with others reported missing, was lashing the Bahamas capital, Nassau, with heavy rains and gusting winds on Thursday.On Wednesday, it tore through sparsely populated low-lying southeastern islands in the Atlantic archipelago.The Bahamas newspaper The Tribune reported on its website that on Acklins Island homes have been completely washed away or have lost entire roofs, power lines have been downed and trees are blocking roads.Many residents sought safety in shelters. NC counties tell thousands to leave as Irene looms

BUXTON, N.C. – Thousands were fleeing an exposed strip of coastal villages and beaches off North Carolina on Thursday as Irene approached, threatening to become the first major hurricane to hit the East Coast in seven years.Hours after a hurricane watch was issued for much of the state's coast, emergency officials expanded evacuation orders to include hundreds of thousands of tourists and locals in three counties. The areas include the barrier island chain known as the Outer Banks, which is expected to take the brunt of Irene's first hit over the weekend.The governors of North Carolina and Virginia also made emergency declarations to free up storm recovery resources, while the Navy began moving dozens of ships out to sea from ports in Irene's path. And emergency officials all the way to New England were urging residents in low-lying areas to gather supplies and learn the way to a safe location.The storm is expected to come ashore Saturday in North Carolina with winds of around 115 (185 kph). Forecasters predict it will then chug up the East Coast, dumping rain from Virginia to New York City before a much-weakened form trudges through New England.As the sun rose over North Carolina's barrier islands, tourists packed suitcases in their cars, while locals stocked up on food, water and gas. Traffic was moving briskly Thursday morning on the two-lane highway that cuts through many of the coastal communities, but many feared that would change.It's going to be a mess, said 66-year-old Buxton resident Leon Reasor as he stood inside a local bait shop. In Virginia, with a southeastern corner that could be in Irene's way, cities along the coast are reviewing their evacuation plans, said Laura Southard, spokeswoman for the state Department of Emergency Management.Farther north, precautions so far were mainly wait-and-see as officials watched for developments in the forecast.New York City officials had begun preparations to evacuate residents from low-lying areas of the city if necessary. The city's subway stations and tunnels would likely be flooded in places, and officials plan to shut the system down ahead of time to reduce damage to the infrastructure.Roads and bridges in Massachusetts are likely to bear the weather in good condition, said Peter Judge, a spokesman for the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency. But the agency is planning for flooding and is keeping an eye on the 3,000 public and private dams throughout the state.North Carolina's Outer Banks have a long history of hurricanes, and building codes and emergency plans reflect that. Structures in the region are designed to withstand up to 110 mph sustained winds and gusts of up to 130 mph for three minutes. Evacuation routes are meticulously planned, down to the order in which counties hit the road.Some of the region's most popular destinations rely on the ailing Bonner Bridge, which was built in 1963 and intended to last 30 years, to connect Hatteras Island to the northern Outer Banks. There's no other way to reach Hatteras except by boat.The bridge handles about 2 million cars a year and the state DOT ranks it a 2 on its safety meter, with 100 being the highest, or most safe, designation.We're going to shift people and resources around to do what we need to do and keep the roads open, said North Carolina Department of Transportation spokeswoman Nicole Meister. The 2.7-mile bridge won't stay open if it's deemed unsafe — which happened during Hurricane Earl last year — but the state has an emergency ferry terminal ready in that case to get people off the island, Meister said.

New tropical depression forms in the Atlantic

MIAMI – A new tropical depression has formed far out over the Atlantic with forecasters saying it will likely become a tropical storm.The depression's maximum sustained winds early Thursday are near 35 mph (55 kph). But the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami says additional strengthening is expected and it's likely to become a tropical storm later in the day.The depression is centered about 435 miles (700 kilometers) west-southwest of the southernmost Cape Verde Islands and is moving west-northwest near 13 mph (20 kph).Meanwhile farther west, Hurricane Irene is threatening the U.S. East Coast.

Monsoon rains trigger floods, kill 16 in Pakistan

PESHAWAR, Pakistan – Flash floods triggered by heavy monsoon rains swept through a village in northwestern Pakistan, killing 16 people and leaving several others missing, disaster management officials said Thursday.The floods hit the remote Kundian Valley in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province Wednesday, destroying houses and other infrastructure, said Syed Asghar Ali Shah, the acting head of disaster management in the province.Rescue operations and relief operations have been hampered by bridges and roads that were damaged last year in the worst flooding in Pakistan's history and have not been fixed, said Shah. Authorities sent two helicopters to help with the operations and hope to send another tomorrow, he said.Heavy rains are expected to continue in the area for at least another 24 hours, according to Pakistan's meteorological department.Monsoon rains begin in July in Pakistan and often lead to flooding. The floods that hit last year inundated about one-fifth of the country — an area the size of the United Kingdom — and affected up to 20 million people.
Experts have warned that many citizens are more vulnerable to flooding this year because they have not recovered from last year's tragedy.

IAF aircraft targeted overnight Wednesday a weapons storage facility in the northern Gaza Strip as well as a smuggling tunnel and weapons manufacturing site in the southern Gaza Strip.The IDF Spokesperson said in a statement that direct hits were confirmed.The sites were targeted in response to the firing of rockets from Gaza at Israel Wednesday evening, said the statement.Gaza-based media sources said that three Palestinian Arabs were seriously injured in the air strike.Gaza terrorists launched at least 16 rocket and mortar attacks at communities across the region on Wednesday evening. Two Israelis were wounded in the night-long barrage, including a baby.A few minutes after midnight, three medium-range Grad Katyusha missiles were fired at Be'er Sheva. The Iron Dome anti-missile system intercepted two of the projectiles, destroying them upon impact. The third landed in an open area on the outskirts of the city. The Islamic Republic contracted with Russia in 2007 for the delivery of at least five S-300 air defense systems, according to the report.The International Court of Justice, also knows as the World Court, is the judicial branch of the United Nations organization. It operates out of The Hague, Netherlands, where it is responsible for settling disputes between states who have.In 2007, Russia and Iran claimed that UN Security Council Resolution 1929 did not apply to the S-300 system because it was not listed specifically in the text. The resolution, passed on June 9, 2010, imposes sanctions on Iran for harboring a secret nuclear weapons program and failing to comply with requests by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to inspect nuclear facilities. It prohibits economic and military cooperation with the Islamic Republic, thereby prohibiting the sale and delivery of the weapons system.The S-300 missile is not in contradiction with any international commitments of the two sides (Iran and Russia) and the issue is clearly emphasized in the deal, on the other hand the date of delivery of the missile system was two years before the adoption of the UN Security Council recent resolution against Iran, Iranian Minister of Defense Ahmad Vahidi told Azerbaijan's Trend News Agency in October 2010.

The appeal comes as intense fighting has erupted in the Libyan capital.The maverick leader made the plea Thursday in a brief audio statement broadcast on Al-Arabiya and other Arab stations.

France calls Libya victory summit, warns Syria

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has called a high-level meeting on Libya's post-Gaddafi future and promised support - but no military action - for opposition forces in Syria.The event is to take place in Paris on 1 September - the 42nd anniversary of the coup which brought Colonel Gaddafi to power.It is to be co-hosted by British Prime Minister David Cameron and to include rebel leaders Mahmoud Jibril and Abdel Jalil, delegates from the 28-country-strong anti-Gaddafi coalition, the Libya Contact Group, as well as states hostile to Western intervention in Libya - China, India, Russia and South Africa.Speaking with Jibril in the French capital on Wednesday (24 August), Sarkozy said Gaddafi's defeat has brought the Western and Arab worlds closer and that he was right to put France fully back into Nato in 2009.

The West and the East are not condemned to confront each other, the people of Europe and Arab people are not condemned to misunderstand each other, he said.The reintegration of France into the principle organs of Nato did nothing to weaken French independnce - on the contrary, since France was, naturally, in the front lines during the military operations [in Libya].Sarkozy ruled out military intervention in Syria due to the lack of a UN mandate. We are steamrolling toward a massive global debt meltdown, and at this point world leaders seem to be all out of solutions. Over the last 30 years or so, the greatest debt bubble in the history of the planet has produced unprecedented prosperity in the western world. But now that debt bubble is starting to burst and the bills are coming due. Many believe that “ground zero” for the coming global debt meltdown will be in Europe. Unlike the U.S. and Japan, the nations of the EU can’t just print more money to cover their debts. Nations such as Greece, Portugal and Italy must repay their debts in euros, and those nations are rapidly getting to the point where their debts are going to overwhelm them. Unfortunately, major banks all over Europe are very highly leveraged and are also very heavily invested in the sovereign debt of nations such as Greece, Portugal and Italy. If even one EU nation defaults it will start tipping over financial dominoes. If more than one EU nation defaults it could cause a cataclysmic wave of bank failures all over Europe.But Germany and the other more financially stable countries of the EU cannot bail out nations like Greece, Portugal and Italy indefinitely. Pouring money into Greece is like pouring money into a black hole. When you take money from financially stable countries and pour it into hopeless messes, you may stabilize things for a little while, but you also cause the financial condition of the financially stable nations to start deteriorating.Right now, the yield on 2 year Greek bonds is up to 44%. Basically, the market is screaming that these are horrible investments and that they will almost certainly default.Greece cannot fire up the printing presses and print more money, so they are now totally dependent on others to bail them out.Just how desperate have things become in Greece? Just consider the following excerpt from a recent article by Puru Saxena….

In Greece, government debt now represents almost 160% of GDP and the average yield on Greek debt is around 15%. Thus, if Greece’s debt is rolled over without restructuring, its interest costs alone will amount to approximately 24% of GDP. In other words, if debt pardoning does not occur, nearly a quarter of Greece’s economic output will be gobbled up by interest repayments! Can you imagine? No nation on earth can afford to pay out nearly a quarter of GDP just on interest on government debt.So just how did Greece get into this position? Well, it turns out that big U.S. banks such as Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase played a big role. The following is an excerpt from a recent article by Andrew Gavin Marshall….In the same way that homeowners take out a second mortgage to pay off their credit card debt, Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan Chase and other U.S. banks helped push government debt far into the future through the derivatives market. This was done in Greece, Italy, and likely several other euro-zone countries as well. In several dozen deals in Europe, banks provided cash upfront in return for government payments in the future, with those liabilities then left off the books. Because the deals are not listed as loans, they are not listed as debt (liabilities), and so the true debt of Greece and other euro-zone countries was and likely to a large degree remains hidden. Greece effectively mortgaged its airports and highways to the major banks in order to get cash up-front and keep the loans off the books, classifying them as transactions.All over the world, politicians love to kick the can down the road, and big Wall Street banks love to find creative ways to help them do that.

But now Greece is about to collapse, and the people that helped them get into this mess will probably never be held accountable.If Greece does default, it is going to have dramatic consequences all over Europe. Sadly, Greece is far from the only problem in Europe. Portugal, Ireland and Italy also have debt to GDP ratios that are above 100%.The biggest potential problem, at least in the near-term, is Italy.Italy is the fourth largest economy in the EU, and lately the financial problems of the Italian government and Italian banks have been making headlines all over the globe.Italy is a far, far larger potential problem than Greece is.The EU can handle bailing out Greece, at least for now.If Italy gets to the point where it needs large bailouts, that is going to bring down the whole system. The EU simply does not have enough money to perform an extensive financial rescue of Italy.As you can see from this chart, the exposure that European banks have to Italian debt is absolutely massive. If Italian debt goes bad, it is going to take down a whole bunch of banks.Not only that, but many believe that the European Central Bank itself is now in some very dangerous territory.It is estimated that the European Central Bank is now holding somewhere in the neighborhood of 444 billion euros worth of debt from the governments of Greece, Italy, Portugal, Ireland and Spain.The financial consequences of a default by one or more of those nations could potentially be catastrophic.According to London-based think tank Open Europe, the European Central Bankis massively overleveraged….Should the ECB see its assets fall by just 4.23pc in value . . . its entire capital base would be wiped out.
That doesn’t sound good.Surely the European Central Bank would be recapitalized somehow, but this is just another example that shows just how dangerous huge amounts of leverage can be.As I wrote about in a recent article about the sovereign debt crisis, if the dominoes begin to tumble in Europe it is going to take everybody down.

The big banks in Europe are leveraged to the hilt, and they are massively exposed to government debt.If you don’t think that this is a problem, just remember what happened back in 2008.Back then, Lehman Brothers was leveraged 31 to 1. When things turned bad, Lehman was wiped out very rapidly.Today, major German banks are leveraged 32 to 1, and those banks are currently holding a massive amount of European sovereign debt.Yes, things could become really nightmarish if the dominoes start to fall.Already we are seeing huge signs of trouble at major banks all over Europe.Major European banks UBS, Barclays, Credit Suisse, RBS, and HSBC have all announced layoffs recently. In fact, when you add them all up, the total number of layoffs announced by these banks just this month is over 40,000. Overall, the grand total of layoffs by European banks so far this year is now up to67,000.The mood in the financial sector over in Europe is very dark right now. Just consider the following excerpt from a recent Bloomberg article….It’s a bloodbath, and I expect things to get worse before they get better, said Jonathan Evans, chairman of executive- search firm Sammons Associates in London. I cannot see a lot of those who have lost their jobs getting re-employed. Regardless of how good someone is, no one wants to talk about hiring. Life will be very difficult for two or three years.Just like back in 2008 with U.S. banks, we are seeing European banks getting absolutely pummeled right now. A recent article in The Sydney Morning Herald documented some of the carnage….The 46-member Bloomberg Europe Banks and Financial Services Index has fallen 31 per cent this year. RBS tumbled 49 per cent, Barclays 44 per cent and France’s Societe Generale 48 per cent.Credit Suisse and UBS both reported a 71 per cent drop in investment-banking earnings in the second quarter. Revenue at Edinburgh-based RBS’s securities unit dropped 35 per cent in the period, while London-based Barclays Capital posted a 27 per cent decline in pretax profit.Things in Europe continue to get worse and worse and worse.Do not take your eyes off of Europe. This crisis is just getting started.Not that there aren’t huge debt problems around the rest of the globe as well.Japan has a national debt that is now over 200 percent of GDP, and they are really struggling to recover from the recent disasters that devastated that nation.

Moody’s has just downgraded Japanese government debt one notch to Aa3, and more downgrades could be coming. For now Japan is still able to borrow huge piles of money very, very cheaply but if that changes Japan could be wiped out very quickly.
Of course the nation with the biggest debt of all is the United States.At the moment, the U.S. national debt is sitting at a grand total of$14,649,289,670,347.85.
Fortunately, the U.S. is also able to borrow massive amounts of money very, very cheaply right now. But when that changes it is going to be absolutely cataclysmic for our economy.Sadly, our politicians continue to act as if this debt binge can go on forever.According to the Congressional Budget Office, the budget deficit for the federal government will be about 1.28 trillion dollars this year. This will be the third year in a row that we have had a budget deficit of over a trillion dollars.To put that in perspective, from George Washington to Ronald Reagan the U.S. government racked up a grand total of about one trillion dollars of debt. But this year alone we will go 1.28 trillion dollars more into debt.At the moment, the U.S. national debt is expanding by about 2 and a half million dollars every single minute. It is hard to put into words how absolutely foolish that is.As I wrote about yesterday, someone needs to wake up America. Our debt is exploding and our economy is dying.
We haven’t even solved the problems caused by the last financial crisis. The real estate market is still a gigantic mess. Purchases of both new and previously existing homes in the United States continue to fall.But there will never be a housing recovery until there is a jobs recovery, and our politicians continue to stand by and watch as millions of our jobs are shipped overseas.Unemployment is rampant, and even many of those that do have jobs are barely able to survive.Back in 1980, less than 30% of all jobs in the United States were low income jobs. Today, more than 40% of all jobs in the United States are low income jobs.That is not a good trend.Sadly, it looks like things are not going to get much better any time soon.Right now, the Congressional Budget Office is projecting that unemployment in the U.S. will remain above 8% until 2014.That should really scare you, because government numbers are almost always way too optimistic. The folks in the federal government hardly ever project that unemployment will actually go up.So if they are saying that unemployment will remain above 8 percent until 2014, the truth is that things will probably be worse than that.We have entered very frightening times. We are on the verge of a massive global debt meltdown, and nobody is sure what is going to happen next.Let us hope for the best, but let us also prepare for the worst.

They said that the Bush administration put obstacles in their path, that information was withheld from them, that President Bush agreed to testify only if he was chaperoned by Vice President Cheney and neither were put under oath, that Pentagon and FAA officials lied to the commission and that the commission considered referring the false testimony for investigation for obstruction of justice.In their book, the chairman and vice chairman, Thomas Kean and Lee Hamilton, wrote that the 9/11 Commission was set up to fail. Senior counsel John Farmer, Jr., wrote
that the US government made a decision not to tell the truth about what happened, and that the NORAD tapes told a radically different story from what had been told to us and the public. Kean said, We to this day don’t know why NORAD told us what they told us, it was just so far from the truth.Most of the questions from the 9/11 families were not answered. Important witnesses were not called. The commission only heard from those who supported the government’s account. The commission was a controlled political operation, not an investigation of events and evidence. Its membership consisted of former politicians. No knowledgeable experts were appointed to the commission.One member of the 9/11 Commission, former Senator Max Cleland, responded to the constraints placed on the commission by the White House: If this decision stands, I, as a member of the commission, cannot look any American in the eye, especially family members of victims, and say the commission had full access. NIST has been forced to admit that WTC 7 was in free fall for part of its descent, and a scientific team led by a professor of nano-chemistry at the University of Copenhagen has reported finding nano-thermite in the dust from the buildings.Larry Silverstein, who had the lease on the World Trade Center buildings, said in a PBS broadcast that the decision was made to pull Building 7 late in the afternoon of 9/11. Chief fire marshals have said that no forensic investigation was made of the buildings’ destruction and that the absence of investigation was a violation of law.

This technique impresses the target, thinking they have been recommended by a big name in the raw dairy industry. In reality, the whole story is fiction and is just used by FDA spies to try to ensnare other raw dairy producers.

• FDA is building a secret government database of raw dairy customers. This is accomplished by training its spies and agents to demand the confiscation of customer lists from raw dairy farmers. Such lists are then delivered to FDA headquarters in Washington D.C. where they are added to a growing database of names, email addresses and sometimes even home addresses. It is not known what the FDA ultimately plans to do with this list.

• FDA pays huge sums of cash each month to various state agriculture departments, then sends top-level FDA infiltration agents to those states to train state-level agents in these same clandestine techniques. While warning the entire U.S. East Coast to be on the alert, Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator Craig Fugate and National Hurricane Center Director Bill Read said it was too early to be certain where Irene would directly hit the coastline.We're going to have a very large tropical cyclone move up the Eastern Seaboard over the next five to seven days, Read said on a conference call in which he spoke along with Fugate.The best guess forecast was that it would approach the coast of the Carolinas on Saturday morning as a major storm of Category 3 or upward, Read said.After that, the already saturated New England region of the East Coast could also be at particular risk for torrential rains, high winds and flooding from Irene, Fugate said. Hurricane watchers circle Aug. 20 on their calendars every year. This is the magic date when hurricane season seems to kicks into high gear.Like clockwork, Hurricane Irene — the Atlantic's first hurricane of 2011 — was born on Aug. 22, later strengthening to a Category 2 hurricane. Last year was another good example of an active storm season ramping up after Aug. 20. All of the 2010's major hurricanes (those of Category 3 or higher) formed after Aug. 20, starting with Danielle on Aug. 21.Aug. 20 seems to be special because around this time, the air and ocean are in just the right state to foster and feed the monster storms. In climate-speak, this time of year is when vertical shear (a change in wind directions with height) in the atmosphere is low enough and sea surface temperatures are warm enough to create big storms.Now, storms can get going before Aug. 20, but this is typically about when they start, said Phil Klotzbach, a hurricane forecaster at Colorado State University in Fort Collins.This year was typical in saving its biggest storm so far for after Aug. 20, but it was unprecedented in the number of tropical storms that fizzled before reaching hurricane strength. The 2011 hurricane season began with eight tropical storms that all failed to become hurricanes before Irene broke the streak. One reason for the flurry of tropical storms is that scientists are naming more tropical storms than in past years, Klotzbach said.

The last time a hurricane season saw so many tropical storms before seeing a hurricane was 2002. That year, Tropical Storm Gustav eventually broke the string by strengthening to a Category 4 hurricane. Gustav struck Louisiana on Sept. 8, killing 112 people.The hurricane forecast from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) calls for 14 to 19 named storms (which include tropical storms and hurricanes), seven to 10 hurricanes and three to five major hurricanes (Category 3 or higher).Irene is currently a Category 2 storm, with winds of up to 100 mph (160 kph), and is the first serious threat to the U.S. coast in three years. If no hurricanes make landfall in 2011, this three-season lull will be the longest in recorded history.

Once-a-century earthquake rattles East Coast

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – A strong earthquake rattled the East Coast on Tuesday, sending tremors as far as Canada, damaging well-known buildings in the nation's capital and sending scared office workers into the streets.There were no reports of major damage or serious injuries from the 5.8 magnitude quake, which was centered in Mineral, Virginia, about 90 miles southwest of Washington, D.C.It was the largest quake in Virginia since 1897 and struck at a shallow depth, increasing its potency.
The Pentagon, White House and U.S. Capitol were evacuated in Washington, and thousands of alarmed workers scurried into the streets up and down the East Coast as the lunchtime quake sent items crashing down from store and office shelves.We were rocking, said Larry Beach, who works at the U.S. Agency for International Development in downtown Washington.It was definitely significant.Federal workers were sent home early.Washington's National Cathedral, host to state funerals and memorial services for many U.S. presidents, suffered damage with three spires in the central tower breaking off.The U.S. East Coast does not normally experience quakes as strong as Tuesday's. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was of 5.8 magnitude, downgrading an earlier estimate if 5.9.Earthquakes of magnitude 5.5 can cause damage to buildings and other structures.In addition to the Virginia earthquake, there were nine tremors in the area immediately around Cokedale, Colorado, near the border of New Mexico.Today we had two significant earthquakes shake large portions of the country, said David Wald, a geophysicist with the USGS.The Western earthquake, magnitude 5.3, within the last 24 hours, shook roughly four western states, primarily Colorado and New Mexico, but also parts of Kansas, Oklahoma as well as Texas -- large states, but probably experienced by tens of thousands of people,he said.

U.S. CAPITOL SHAKEN

As if a rare strong earthquake were not enough, the East Coast was also on alert for powerful Hurricane Irene which was heading up from the Caribbean and could hit at the weekend.The quake made chandeliers sway in the U.S. Capitol and the floor of the U.S. Senate shook before staff headed for the exits. Some minor damage could be seen in the rotunda, under the dome of the Capitol.Bits of paint and plaster fell from high on the walls and chunks of plaster fell from above a doorway in the Capitol's Statuary Hall. The U.S. Congress is in recess so most members were away.I thought at first somebody was shaking my chair and then I thought maybe it was a bomb, said Senate aide Wendy Oscarson-Kirchner.Phone service was disrupted throughout the region as network congestion blocked cell phone users from making calls.There were also nuclear safety fears when one of four emergency diesel generators at the North Anna nuclear power plant in Virginia lost power due to the quake and automatically halted operations.The plant operated by Dominion Resources was designed to withstand an earthquake of magnitude up to 6.2, a company spokesman said. Dominion reported no major damage to the facility.Three generators were needed to kick in and keep the reactors' radioactive cores cool. Court nixes Palestinian bid on Jerusalem fence route

An Israeli rights group criticised on Tuesday a court decision upholding the route of Israel's West Bank barrier, which cuts off a Palestinian village from its land in an area between Jerusalem and Bethlehem.Residents of Al-Walaja had appealed to Israel's Supreme Court to reroute a portion of the barrier which they say cuts off the village of 2,500 from farming land, a cemetery and a nearby spring.The village straddles the border between east Jerusalem and the West Bank, with a third of its land falling within the Israeli-annexed sector.But Israel's Supreme Court rejected the petition on Monday, saying security concerns outweighed the disturbance to their lives.Ir Amim, an NGO which lobbies for Palestinians and Israelis to share Jerusalem, said the villagers had been placed in an impossible situation by Israel.

The court verdict does not address the question of Walaja because Israel is condemned to rule Walaja unwisely and unfairly, said Daniel Seidemann, a founder of Ir Amim.We have no business ruling it in the first place, he told AFP. We do not provide them services, do not allow them access to the West Bank, do not allow them access to Israel.Chief Justice Dorit Beinish wrote in her decision the barrier in Walaja was one of the last sections around Jerusalem that still needed completion.The geographical proximity between these territories and the Jerusalem municipal area has over the years transformed it into a preferred target destination for terrorists operating in the area who wish to infiltrate the city limits, she wrote.Moving the barrier could also pose a potential threat to passengers on the Tel Aviv-Jerusalem railway, which runs nearby, she said.Israel says the barrier is designed to prevent attacks, but the Palestinians view it as an apartheid wall that carves off key parts of their promised state.When the 709-kilometre (435-mile) barrier is complete, 85 percent of it will have been built inside the occupied West Bank.In a non-binding 2004 judgement, the International Court of Justice called for the dismantling of all parts of the separation barrier built on occupied territory.

Israeli military: Aircraft strike Gaza gunmen

JERUSALEM (AP) — Violence along the Gaza-Israel border heated up on Wednesday, with Israeli airstrikes on militant targets and militant rocket fire at Israel.Israeli media reported that security forces sent down reinforcements to the area. A music festival that was to be held in the southern city of Ashkelon was canceled, conforming with military recommendations against large gatherings in tense security times, the military said.Israeli aircraft killed a militant from Gaza's Islamic Jihad faction before dawn on Wednesday, Hamas security officials said. They later targeted two militants who had fired two mortars at Israel shortly before. No casualties were reported in that airstrike.The Israeli military said the dead militant had smuggled weapons into Gaza and was involved in militant activity in Egypt's Sinai peninsula, near Israel's southern border. It did not elaborate.A militant incursion into Israel from Sinai last week killed eight Israelis. That was followed by Palestinian rocket attacks and Israeli airstrikes that have not stopped despite a cease-fire reached on Sunday.

Rebels tell story of plan to take Tripoli AP By HADEEL AL-SHALCHI - AUG 24,11

BENGHAZI, Libya (AP) — They called it Operation Mermaid Dawn, a stealth plan coordinated by sleeper cells, Libyan rebels, and NATO to snatch the capital from the Moammar Gadhafi's regime's hands.It began three months ago when groups of young men left their homes in Tripoli and traveled to train in Benghazi with ex-military soldiers.After training in Benghazi, the men would return to Tripoli either through the sea disguised as fishermen or through the western mountains.They went back to Tripoli and waited; they became sleeper cells, said military spokesman Fadlallah Haroun, who helped organize the operation.He said that many of the trained fighters also stayed in the cities west of Tripoli, including Zintan and Zawiya, and waited for the day to come to push into the capital.Operation Mermaid Dawn began on the night of August 21 and took the world by surprise as the rebels sped into the capital and celebrated in Green Square with almost no resistance from pro-Gadhafi forces.Haroun said about 150 men rose up from inside Tripoli, blocking streets, engaging in armed street fights with Gadhafi brigades, and taking over their streets with check points.He said another 200 men from Misrata.But why did the armed Gadhafi troops melt away when the rebels drove through? Fathi Baja, head of the rebel leadership's political committee, said it was all thanks to a deal cut with the head of the batallion in charge of protecting Tripoli's gates, the Mohammed Megrayef Brigade.

His name was Mohammed Eshkal and he was very close to Gadhafi and his family. Baja said Gadhafi had ordered the death of his cousin twenty years ago.Eshkal carried a grudge in his heart against Gadhafi for 20 years, and he made a deal with the NTC — when the zero hour approached he would hand the city over to the rebels, said Haroun.
Eshkal didn't care much about the revolution, said Haroun.He wanted to take a personal revenge from Gadhafi and when he saw a chance that he will fall, he just let it happen.But Haroun said he still didn't trust Eshkal or the men who defected so late in the game.Haroun said that he didn't trust any of the defectors who left Gadhafi's side so close to August 20.They lived knew his days were numbered so they defected, but in their hearts they will always fear Gadhafi and give him a regard, he said.Haroun said NATO was in contact with the rebel leadership in Benghazi and were aware of the date of Operation Mermaid Dawn.Honestly, NATO played a very big role in liberating Tripoli — they bombed all the main locations that we couldn't handle with our light weapons, said Harouin.Analysts have noted that as time went on, NATO airstrikes became more and more precise and there was less and less collateral damage, indicating the presence of air controllers on the battlefields.

Targeted bombings launched methodical strikes on Gadhafi's crucial communications facilities and weapons caches. An increasing number of American hunter-killer drones provided round-the-clock surveillance as the rebels advanced.Diplomats acknowledge that covert teams from France, Britain and some East European states provided critical assistance.The assistance included logisticians, security advisers and forward air controllers for the rebel army, as well as intelligence operatives, damage assessment analysts and other experts, according to a diplomat based at NATO's headquarters in Brussels. The diplomat spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the issue.Foreign military advisers on the ground provided key real-time intelligence to the rebels, enabling them to maximize their limited firepower against the enemy. One U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss intelligence matters, said the Qatari military led the way, augmented later by French, Italian and British military advisers. This effort had a multiple purpose, not only assisting the rebels but monitoring their ranks and watching for any al-Qaida elements trying to infiltrate or influence the rebellion.Bolstering the intelligence on the ground was an escalating surveillance and targeting campaign in the skies above. Armed U.S. Predator drones helped to clear a path for the rebels to advance.Baja said as the time for Operation Mermaid Dawn came close to execution, NATO began to intensify their bombing campaign at Bab al-Azizya and near jails where weapons were stored and political prisoners were held.And then the people rose up.

European nations and the United States on Tuesday circulated a draft UN Security Council resolution which seeks an arms embargo and other sanctions aimed at stopping the Syrian government’s ongoing crackdown on protesters.The draft was presented after last week it was reported that the U.S., Britain and other European allies were in the process of preparing it.According to a report in The Associated Press, the draft resolution calls for an asset freeze against 23 key Syrian figures including President Bashar Assad, his younger brother Maher, who is believed to be in command of much of the current bloody crackdown, and his millionaire cousin, Rami Makhlouf, who controls the mobile phone network and other lucrative enterprises in Syria.The resolution also calls for an asset freeze against two companies controlled by Makhlouf and would also impose a travel ban on 21 individuals including Makhlouf, but not Assad or his younger brother.The supporters of the sanctions, however, faced immediate opposition from Russia, who has veto power in the Security Council.

According to AP, when asked whether it was the right time to slap sanctions on Syrian President Bashar Assad, Russia’s UN Ambassador Vitaly Churkin told reporters, No. We don’t think so.Last week at the Security Council meeting, the members heard briefings on Syria from UN human rights chief Navi Pillay, the world body’s humanitarian coordinator Valerie Amos and UN political affairs chief Lynn Pascoe.
Pillay later told reporters that the Syrian government might have committed crimes against humanity, adding she had recommended that the council should consider referring Syria to the International Criminal Court in The Hague.The draft resolution presented Tuesday echoes the team’s conclusion, notes Pillay’s recommendation but stops short of ordering Syria to be referred to the court, saying only that those responsible for violence should be held accountable.The resolution “strongly condemns the continued grave and systematic human rights violations by the Syrian authorities, such as arbitrary executions, excessive use of force and the killing and persecution of protesters and human rights defenders, arbitrary detention, enforced disappearances, torture and ill-treatment of detainees, also of children.It demands that Syrian authorities immediately stop human rights violations and the use of force against civilians and allow the full exercise of human rights and fundamental freedoms for its entire population, including rights of freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, and lift restrictions on all forms of media.The proposed resolution calls for an inclusive Syrian-led political process conducted in an environment free from fear and intimidation and aimed at effectively addressing the legitimate aspirations and concerns of Syria’s population.On the arms embargo, the draft would require all countries to ban the sale or transfer of arms and military-related assistance to Syria and would also ban the Syrian government from exporting arms or providing military assistance to other states.AP noted, however, that while the resolution is backed by Britain, France, Germany, Portugal and the U.S., it is likely to face opposition not only from Russia but also from veto-wielding China, and possibly from council members Brazil, India and South Africa.

BEIRUT (AP) — Syria's fragmented opposition took steps toward forming a national council Tuesday, but serious divisions and mistrust among the members prevented them from presenting a unified front against President Bashar Assad's regime more than five months into the country's uprising, participants said.Syria's opposition, fragmented by years of sectarian and ideological tensions, has made unprecedented gains against the regime, but there is no clear leadership or platform beyond the demands for more freedom and for Assad to step down.With Assad's forces cracking down on the protests, the overall death toll has reached 2,200, the United Nations said this week.A group of opposition members have been meeting in neighboring Turkey in recent days, but participants gave conflicting reports about exactly what emerged. Obeida al-Nahhas told The Associated Press that a council had been formed but the details were still being completed; others said there was no council to speak of yet.People are just beginning to form an opposition and so they are treading carefully. This is understandable, said Mahmud Osman, an opposition member at the meeting in Turkey. We don't claim to represent the whole of Syria. But we are talking to everyone and we are trying to build a consensus.The unrest in Syria shows no sign of abating, with both sides of the conflict energized. Protesters pour into the streets every Friday, defying the near-certain barrage of shelling and sniper fire. But the regime is strong as well and in no imminent danger of collapse, setting the stage for what could be a drawn-out and bloody stalemate.Assad has shrugged off broad international condemnation and calls for him to step down, insisting that armed gangs and thugs are driving the violence, not true reform-seekers.

Activists said Tuesday that Syrian security forces killed at least seven people in the central city of Homs on Monday, soon after a U.N. humanitarian team left the area because the security situation was deteriorating.Amateur videos posted online by activists showed crowds of people crowding around cars with the blue U.N. flag, flashing banners that read: We will never stop until we get our freedom.The protesters chanted for freedom and the downfall of the Assad regime.Syria has banned foreign media and severely restricted local coverage, making it nearly impossible to confirm events on the ground.Syria had granted the U.N. team permission to visit some areas to assess humanitarian needs, but activists and a Western diplomat have accused the regime of trying to scrub away signs of the crackdown.Residents and activists said it was quiet until the team left, after which troops opened fire on an anti-government protest, killing four. Two other terrorists in the car were wounded, according to local medical sources. They were traveling near Rafiah, the city that straddles the Gaza border with Egypt.Senior Islamic Jihad member Ahmad al-Mudallal told reporters in response to Al-Asmar's assassination, “This crime was meant to underline that Israel only understands the language of blood and terror.We will take action against the enemy in a language that it understands, the language of blood, he vowed.We will not ignore the crimes it commits against our people.Al-Asmar was a local leader in Rafiah, according to the IDF spokesperson, who added that he was involved in smuggling weapons and sought to advance military operations in the Sinai Peninsula. She added that Lately there have been several attempts by Gaza terrorists to carry out attacks in Sinai, and that was what this operative was involved in.The air strike came in retaliation for days of missile and mortar attacks on southern Israel and is part of the effort to silence the rocket fire against Israel's citizens.Two other terrorists also were targeted early Wednesday morning by IAF fighter jets in two separate locations in Gaza attempting to launch a rocket attack at southern Israel. Israel filed a formal complaint Tuesday to the United Nations following continued rocket attacks from Gaza.This week’s announcement by Hamas of a ceasefire was in line with numerous statements in the past of a cessation of hostilities, only to be followed by what usually are short-range Kassam rocket and mortar shell attacks.The firing at Israeli communities often is carried out by other terrorist groups, some of them rivals of Hamas and others working in coordination with the terrorist organization.One example is the Salahuddin Brigades, the armed wing of the Popular Resistance Committees (PRC) that announced a temporary halt to firing rocket fire. Alan Greenspan, the former chairman of the US federal reserve, has said the eurozone is breaking apart due to variations between economies in the north and south of Europe.Speaking during a question-and-answer session at the Innovation Nation Forum in Washington on Tuesday (23 August), the 85-year-old economist said: The euro is breaking down and the process of its breaking down is creating very considerable difficulties in the European banking system. He added: That stuff [eurozone country bonds held by banks] has always been thought of as the ideal collateral and now it’s getting highly questionable.Greenspan explained that northern countries, such as Germany and Finland, have a culture of budgetary discipline while southern nations, such as Greece, historically consume more than they produce and build up debt.The problem is that there is a growing cleavage in the economic and analytical and banking circles as to whether the euro, which is the crucial issue here, should be 17 countries with very significantly different cultures ... That cannot go on, he said. The general feeling out there is of a lull before the storm.Greenspan's remarks - widely reported by financial newswires - saw the euro dip against the dollar and the cost of German goverment bonds, viewed as a safe haven, tick upward.

His comments came out the same day as Spain moved a step closer to the northern model.Opposition leader Mariano Rajoy told MPs at an emergency meeting of the Spanish parliament on Tuesday that his Popular Party will back government proposals to insert borrowing limits into the country's constitution. My parliamentary group is ready to support the initiative and facilitate its implementation,he said. MPs also voted in an extra €5 billion of savings by - amid other measures - switching to generic drugs in the health service.The constitution move follows a similar pledge by Italy after Madrid and Rome's cost of borrowing shot up last month.Eurozone leaders on 21 July gave the green light to a second bailout package for Greece and new bond-buying powers for its crisis-fund, the EFSF, in a bid to calm markets. It is empty now and they are gone but they couldn’t get all of the blood off the walls. I will tell you, this was one of the most horrific, bloodiest massacres I could imagine. It was horrifying, horrifying.And yet in that community, profound hope. If you stand in their backyard, you can see the two mountains: The Mountain of Blessing and the Mountain of Curse. It is scriptural. Which do you choose? The mountain of blessing or curse. And this community has both.
I can’t believe what people go through here in Israel, and the world stays silent. The media is distorting and lying, lying to you. Lying to you. And it is important that you know it.Arab Knesset members have warned of possible violence on Wednesday as Beck holds his Restoring Courage rally at the Southern Wall excavation sites near the Temple Mount, an event expected to garner an audience of over 2,000 at the Davidson Center in Jerusalem.Arutz Sheva reported that Hadash MK Muhammad Barakei said, There are enough racists in Israel without importing them from the US. The debate on the intentions of Glenn Beck and other Christian evangelicals rages on, and Dr. Gadi Eshel, a Land of Israel activist, told Arutz 7 Tuesday that he did not believe that Beck's intentions were improper and rejecting the friendship of evangelicals could cause anti-Semitism.Eshel was responding to comments by Jerusalem City Council member Mina Fenton Monday, who voiced vociferous opposition to Beck's appearance in Jerusalem on Wednesday, saying that his rally was designed to encourage missionary activity. Eshel told Arutz 7 that Christians like Beck supported Israel because they were strong believers in the Bible, and not out of missionary reasons.The basic belief of [evangelical, ed.] Christians like Beck is that the Torah [Pentateuch] and Tanach [Bible] are divine in nature and precede the Christian Gospels. This is different than the beliefs of traditional Christians, like Roman Catholics, and even Episcopalians, who participate in boycotts against Israel, he said.As such, Eshel said, rejecting the friendship offered unconditionally by Beck and evangelicals in general would be the ultimate in ingratitude.Such ingratitude would be an act of suicide, he said.This could cause great damage potentially. The paranoia and automatic negative reaction has the potential to cause a great wave of anti-Semitism.With all the concerns about the rise of radical Islam and the isolation of Israel even by the U.S., Eshel says, spitting at and rejecting Israel's most loyal friends would truly be an act of suicide.
