Ontario Hydro used Agent Orange to clear power line corridors across the province, through city backyards and thick rural brush.Hydro's own records, obtained by the Star, boast that in one 12-year period, the power company dropped enough chemicals in Ontario to cover a 30-metre-wide swath travelling four-fifths the distance around the world.The Ontario Hydro revelation moves health concerns over the toxin closer to highly populated areas of the province, with spraying on hundreds of thousands of kilometres of hydro corridors looping through parks and farmers' fields.For months at a time, summer students and salaried Hydro labourers would fan out across Ontario with metal knapsacks filled with poisonous chemicals strapped to their backs. The company also loaded hundreds of gallons of herbicides onto all-terrain vehicles, helicopters, army trucks, swamp tractors and even horses to help workers access every nook and cranny, according to the Star's ongoing investigation.Every power line in Ontario was sprayed, said Sidney Rodger, a former Hydro supervisor who worked in eastern Ontario from 1958 to 1968.All this spraying was done in urban and rural areas with no regard for creeks and streams or residents and wildlife.The Toronto Star interviewed former Hydro employees, including summer students and senior managers, who were assured the chemicals were harmless. The illnesses they've been dealing with the past few decades tell a different story.The men came forward after a Star investigation published last week revealed that the most widely used chemical in the Vietnam War was also employed at large by Ontario's Department of Lands and Forests to strip massive plots of Crown land during the 1950s, 60s and 70s.

A Hydro One spokeswoman confirmed the utility also used Agent Orange across Ontario from 1950 to 1979.Daniele Gauvin said anyone with concerns can contact Hydro One, a company created in 1998 to replace Ontario Hydro. Gauvin said people are welcome to call the corporate switchboard.Meanwhile, government officials are probing the effects of Agent Orange use by provincial ministries in northern Ontario and along roadsides across the province.Spraying can be a bitter pill to the public, states an Ontario Hydro training document from 1962. It advised spraying supervisors to practise courtesy, care and common sense.To convince farmers to allow Hydro spray crews onto their pastures, some supervisors would dip a cup into the chemical tank and take a swig.We were just young, single guys making big money, said Orval Newton, 64, who earned $2.06 an hour as a labourer power-spraying trees and brush beneath high-voltage lines from Parry Sound to Toronto in 1967.Bread cost 25 cents a loaf at the time and regular gasoline was 41.9 cents a gallon.We had no protection, he said. The drift would come back into your face. You'd finish the day with your clothes soaked.Four years ago, Newton was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, one of more than 50 medical conditions the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs associates with exposure to Agent Orange.George Hambley, 62, spent three summers spraying near Kirkland Lake during the early 1970s.A massive tractor carrying hundreds of gallons of chemicals rolled through the brush. Attached to the chemical tank were three high-pressure hoses usually carried by seasonal workers like him.The guy on the middle hose got it bad, he said. Sometimes we'd start to gag because the spray was so thick.

A few years after he finished with Hydro, still in his 20s, Hambley started to lose feeling in his toes. Year by year, the numbness spread to his legs and hands. His official diagnosis is neuropathy, a disorder the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs also associates with exposure to Agent Orange.When Hambley was in his 30s, thick, red patches of skin with flaky, silver-white scales started to appear; they now cover 75 per cent of his body.On hot days, and with the blessing of our foreman, we would spray each other with this safe concoction, recalls Bryan Ostrowski, 69, who worked with the chemicals as a teenager in northern Ontario.We would spray upwards beneath the trees, he said.We did this day in and day out.He was 15 his first year.
Ostrowski started developing heart problems in his 20s. He had his first bypass at 41and now has a stent. Polyps riddled his nasal cavities. The polyps were removed in his 30s.Richard Monk, 58, recalls members of his spray gang in Parry Sound complaining about the noxious chemicals shortly after he started working for Ontario Hydro in 1975. His crew used many, many chemicals, including an equal-parts cocktail of the herbicides 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T mixed in diesel fuel — Agent Orange.There were times we couldn't open our eyes in the morning, he said, because the toxins seemed to glue them shut. We had to walk down the cabin feeling the walls to find a basin to bathe them.The company responded to these complaints, he said, by conducting a study of workers' urine and monitoring the air with some kind of breathing apparatus.

Monk, who retired from the company as a superintendent for northern Ontario after 34 years of service, said he supplied urine samples for two weeks.We never got the results.In 2000, at the age of 48, Monk was diagnosed with bladder cancer.Hydro One could not provide the Star with the results of the urine study. A spokesperson said Ontario Hydro's records are archived with Ontario Power Generation. Hydro One pointed the Star to a different study, based on a questionnaire, that concluded forestry workers who were routinely exposed to poisonous herbicides were no more likely to die of cancer than men in the general population, though it did show a significant increase in suicide.The study tracked 1,222 Hydro employees who worked for six months or more between 1950 and 1982 and who were routinely exposed to herbicides. The report is based on two questionnaires workers were asked to fill out.

The Star asked a leading U.S. epidemiologist who has studied the effects of Agent Orange on military veterans to review the report.No one should derive comfort or reassurance of safety from the Ontario study, said Dr. Joel Michalek, the lead scientist in a prominent U.S. study that tracked the health of about 1,000 military veterans who participated in Operation Ranch Hand — a series of Air Force missions that sprayed defoliants over 1.4 million hectares of South Vietnam.Among epidemiology studies, this particular study offers the weakest form of evidence, with no control group and no measurement of the dioxin contaminant in people who comprised the cohort, said Michalek from San Antonio, where he is vice-chair of the epidemiology department at the University of Texas Health Science Center. David McCarty spent two summers in the early 1960s spraying power lines for Ontario Hydro near his hometown of New Liskeard, Ont. He was 17 years old his first year. I needed a goddamn job, he said. In those days, my dad was a guard at the jail. He made $5 an hour. I was making $11 an hour in the bush. Sometimes, I think it was shut-up money.

He's 64 years old. He's had two heart attacks, the first at age 37. He's been treated for mouth and skin cancer. Doctors twice extracted melanomas from his nose. He was not part of the Ontario study, he said.I've been talking with a girl from the WSIB (Workplace Safety and Insurance Board). She wanted me to put in a claim, he said. My doctor says nobody is going to tell you this is connected.McCarty sprayed power lines from Abitibi Canyon to Sudbury. When we'd come back the next day, you could tell where we left off because the leaves would be brown and curling, he said.

After a day spent in the thick chemical fog, the workers rarely bathed.If you cleaned up at night, you'd get eaten alive by blackflies, he said. You would wash the palm of your hands and your mouth and that's it! We stunk like hell.Tom Plaunt was 19 during his first summer of spraying. For him, it was a sort of initiation into manhood.That's where I learned to smoke cigarettes, drink beer and swear like a trooper,said Plaunt, 66, a retired university music professor in Montreal. He worked on Hydro's spray crews west of Shining Tree, Ont., for two summers in the 1960s.
Still, he can't help but wonder if the wart-like growths that began covering his body shortly after his work with Ontario Hydro are connected to the chemicals he sprayed.The chemical mixture would stick to his skin for days, he said.The men working with this stuff would lose a layer of skin a week, said Rodger, 75, who left Hydro to become a teacher.Many of the men he worked with developed white blotches on their hands and faces. As for his own health, Rodger said he's feeling fine. His youngest son, though, was born with an extra finger, which doctors removed at birth.

650 calls flood Agent Orange hotlines Published On Mon Mar 7 The Canadian Press

Close to 650 calls have flooded provincial hotlines in the wake of recent revelations that Agent Orange was used in Ontario for more than three decades.The government says 292 calls have come in to its Agent Orange information line, while another 354 calls have been logged by the Workplace Safety Insurance Board.The hotlines were set up after the government confirmed about two weeks ago that a chemical mixture linked to certain types of cancer was used during the 1950s, 60s and 70s.The governing Liberals have launched an internal probe on the use of the toxic herbicide, which was sprayed along Ontario highways, in transmission corridors and on Crown land.They’ve also promised to create an independent panel that will investigate the province’s use of 2,4,5-T — a dioxin-laced component of Agent Orange that was approved for use in Canada until 1985.Natural Resources Minister Linda Jeffrey says she’ll likely name the head of an independent panel later this week.

Opposition says smart hydro meters cost consumers more

TORONTO — There's no doubt the Ontario government's $1-billion smart meter program for electricity is costing consumers more instead of saving them money, the opposition parties charged Monday. About 4.5 million smart meters have been installed in homes and small businesses to switch them to time-of-use pricing for electricity and away from the old, two-tiered system based only on total usage. Data from utilities in Bowmanville and Toronto show most customers with smart meters are paying more, while only a small number are seeing decreases, said NDP Leader Andrea Horwath.There's more people paying more than there are saving, said Horwath.Here we have a system that's costing us $1 billion and people aren't getting the benefit in cost savings and they're not getting the benefit in conservation. It's a complete failure.Toronto Hydro figures show 80 per cent of customers had increases averaging $1.50 a month, while 20 per cent had decreases averaging $3.70 a month.

Figures from Bowmanville, east of Toronto, show 57 per cent of residential customers paid more for electricity than they would have paid on the old two-tiered pricing system.The giant transmission utility Hydro One, which is also a local distribution company for about one million customers, also found 57 per cent of customers were paying more with smart meters.The figures are preliminary, cautioned Energy Minister Brad Duguid, because no one has been using smart meters for a full year yet.On average, consumers are saving modestly, and I would use the word modestly, said Duguid.But there are more that would be paying a little bit more and there are less that would be paying significantly less, if you know what I mean. It's a little complicated.Progressive Conservative Leader Tim Hudak literally laughed out loud when asked if smart meters were saving anyone money.I don't think anybody actually believes the premier or his energy minister when they say that these smart meter tax machines are saving anybody money, said Hudak.Everybody I talk to (says) their bills are going through the roof, and the smart meters are making them worse.Hudak has promised a Conservative government would allow people to revert to two-tiered pricing and away from time-of-use so they aren't forced to do dishes and laundry late at night.

I don't think the premier should be dictating to families to have all the kids showered, fed and ready for school by 7 a.m. when the higher rates kick in, said Hudak.We're going to unplug the mandatory smart meters and give families a choice.
Going backwards and unplugging the smart meters is not an option, said Duguid.We're moving toward time-of-use so that we can help Ontario consumers manage their energy costs and understand that there are different costs to energy, to the system, depending on when you use energy,he said.It's very important ... that consumers are fully aware of the costs of energy, on-peak and off-peak.Horwath called the smart meters cruel and unusual punishment, but said the NDP hasn't yet decided if it would go as far as Hudak and agree to let consumers opt out and return to the old pricing plan.We definitely think it's a program that is not going to get the results we need to get, said Horwath.We'd like to see much more investment in conservation.Duguid insisted the smart meters would result in big savings over time, and said they were needed to upgrade Ontario's power system to deal with everything from electric cars to smart appliances.That $1 billion will accrue $1.6 billion in savings over 15 years,Duguid told the legislature. You have to invest in modernizing our energy system if you're going to get access to those savings.

Nato moving warships and planes closer to Libya

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - Nato defence ministers have agreed to reposition warships and airplanes currently deployed in the Mediterranean closer to the Libyan coast and to further explore the possibility of establishing a no-fly zone. Today we have taken two decisions: to increase the presence of Nato maritime assets in the central Mediterranean ... and to continue planning for a no-fly zone in case Nato were to receive a clear UN mandate, Nato chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen said during a press conference at the end of a meeting in Brussels on Thursday (10 March) dedicated to the Libyan crisis.The repositioning of warships comes a few days after the military alliance increased its air surveillance missions on Libya from 10 to 24 hours a day.

This will improve Nato awareness, which is vital in these circumstances, including a better monitoring of the UN arms embargo, the former Danish Prime Minister explained.
Mr Rasmussen also responded to an AFP report saying that France is calling for Nato powers to strike three Gaddafi military hubs.The French ideas were not discussed at all,he said, while sitting at the same table as the French defence minister. We don't look for an intervention in Libya, we need a clear legal basis for any action.
Other ministers at the meeting confirmed that the French colleague kept silent about the airstrike plans which, according to AFP, French President Nicholas Sarkozy plans to present on Friday to fellow EU leaders during a special summit on the Libyan crisis.There was no such proposal [at the Nato meeting]. Maybe it was something for media consumption,Czech defence minister Alexander Vondra told this website.US defence minister Robert Gates, speaking to reporters after the event, said that planning continues for a no-fly zone.A number of ministers made it very clear that we want to put ourselves in a position to assist the UN, the African Union or the Arab League. It's essential that Nato is responsive in this endeavour rather than taking initiative on its own, he added.Earlier this week, Mr Gates told Congress that a no-fly zone entails airstrikes and requires a UN mandate.

Nato's reluctance to go in with the big guns - as one diplomat put it - is also a reflection of wariness among some of its members, notably Turkey, to support any military action in Libya.Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan last week said that Nato has no business being there and his defence minister on Thursday tried to downplay plans for a no-fly zone.Mr Rasmussen was wary of labelling the situation in Libya as a civil war but did warn of the consequences of a prolonged conflict.Speaking instead of an armed upheaval, he said Nato was particulary concerned of the risk of division within the country and the risk of seeing a failed state that could be a breeding ground for terrorism.

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - French President Nicolas Sarkozy's surprise decision to formally recognise Libyan rebels in Benghazi as the legitimate government of Libya caused dismay at a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels on Thursday (10 March).German foreign minister Guido Westerwelle in an unusually candid press briefing said he was sitting next to French foreign minister Alain Juppe in the EU capital when the news broke, complaining that he had not been pre-notified and that Mr Sarkozy appears to have acted on a whim.He added that the French position is not the German position or the European position.Berlin believes the Sarkozy move is a public relations stunt following recent revelations that his prime minister and former foreign minister took gifts from dictators in Egypt and Tunisia shortly before the revolutions.It also believes the move is linked to the 2012 presidential elections in France, with the latest polls indicating that Mr Sarkozy will not make the second round.

Italy as well distanced itself from the French position. Foreign minister Franco Frattini told press that the UN and EU should send new fact-finding missions to Benghazi before making any decisions.Belgian foreign minister Steven Vanackere said there is a difference between engagement and recognition. As the ministers were leaving the building, the French national news agency AFP reported that Paris is keen to go even further.The agency quoted an unnamed French official as saying Mr Sarkozy will at a special summit on Libya on Friday recommend to fellow EU leaders to strike three Gaddafi targets: a military airport in Sirte, another one in Sebha and a Gaddafi command centre in Bab al-Azizia.EU leaders in their declaration on Friday are set to tell Gaddafi that he must step down and to agree that any military action must have a UN Security Council mandate and the political blessing of the Arab League and the African Union.The Gaddafi regime is finished. This is clear, Italy's Mr Frattini said. All the ministers said that the Gaddafi regime is over but nobody knows how to translate that statement into action ... EU states to discuss reasons for national GMO bans

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - EU environment ministers meeting in Brussels on Monday (14 March) will discuss a list of possible reasons why individual member states could opt to ban the cultivation of genetically-modified crops in future. Public morals, public order and cultural policy are among the options listed in a European Commission working document, seen by this website. The paper builds on a commission proposal last July to partially renationalise decisions over GMO cultivation, after years of deadlock in the area.Under the proposal, the EU would continue to approve GMO cultivation along environmental and human health lines, after which member states could then opt to ban a particular crop, based on a different set of criteria.The plan has met with considerable opposition however, with France and Germany concerned that it could result in the fragmentation of the EU's internal market, as well as run into trouble with the World Trade Organisation. Governments have also pressed the commission to provide details of the criteria they could use when deciding on a ban, with debate on the subject now set for Monday.Under a public morals option, the commission suggests religious, philosophical and ethical concerns are all potential reasons for a national ban.Efforts to preserve organic and conventional farming systems could lead member states to invoke the avoidance of GMO presence in other products as a reason, says the working paper. Social policy objectives include the preservation of certain farming types to maintain jobs, while member states could also cite reasons of cultural policy.

General environmental policy objectives such as the maintenance of landscape features and certain habitats, is also listed as a possible option. This differs from the environmental criteria currently used at the EU-level by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) which looks at issues such as toxicity and the impact on micro-organisms.Member states could use one or a combination of these reasons, suggests the commission.However the sole invocation ... will not be sufficient to meet the scrutiny of the Court of Justice of the European Union. The measure should be justified, proportionate and non discriminatory,states the working paper.

Environmental groups argue that member states opting for a national ban under these options would be vulnerable to future legal challenges. We believe that the commission's July proposal must give member states the right to invoke health and [all] environmental reasons, otherwise this debate is going to run on even longer, Greenpeace director of agriculture Marco Contiero told EUobserver.At present, the commission authorises GMO cultivation on the basis of an opinion from EFSA, a controversial body whose views have sometimes clashed with national scientific advice. As a result, certain countries including Austria, France and Hungary have imposed temporary safeguard measures to prevent EU-approved crops from being cultivated within their borders.The commission has failed to act as a risk manager, said Mr Contiero. The proposal is meant to give member states the right to ban GMOs but in reality it doesn't because it maintains EFSA at the heart of the decision-making process.Diplomats concede that a large number of questions still need answering. Our aim is to keep this proposal alive, said a Hungarian EU presidency official on Thursday.Anti-GMO states including Hungary, Austria and Greece support the commission's proposal as a way to impose permanent national bans. Nowhere was the truth of the great Torah sage’s vision more evident than at Emunah [the National Religious Women’s Organization} Israel’s unique celebration of International Women’s Day this past Tuesday, with the first ever Day of Dance-- for Women Only.The first class performances at the event, by women, of women and for women showed that the state of Israel has enabled not only the Jews but also the spirit of the Jewish people to come out of exile.Actually, the idea of celebrating a Women’s Day has its origins in communist countries, where it was part of an attempt to downgrade family loyalty. The first to make it a national holiday was none other than Vladimi Ilyich Lenin.That may be the reason that it is generally a day for women and their organizations to complain about what is wrong with women’s lives. A perusal of the Israeli mainstream media on Tuesday bore out that fact, with most articles replete with criticism, pessimism and demands.Not at Emunah. At the auditorium in Kibbutz Tzora near Beit Shemesh, over 800 women of all ages made the day a showcase for the opportunities that religious women have in the Jewish state and the once unheard of possibility of developing their talents in fields such as the dance.

And what talents! At the morning session, after a Torah lecture on dance in Biblical sources—for today’s religious Zionist woman learns Torah—there were six parallel dance groups, expressing ideas such as faith, emotions, longings for G-d, finding the inner self and six participatory dance workshops ranging from jazz to Ethiopian hip-hop to flamenco.. The workshops were filled to capacity and the joy was palpable.The early afternoon was dedicated to performances by women’s dance groups. I, a former New Yorker who frequented the best in music, dance and art, was astonished by the international level and perfect technique of the classical ballet group Divertissement, led by former Bolshoi dancer Nadia Timfeyba. The Barefoot Dance Group, an original dance trio from the Judean religious-secular town of Tekoa, and the Noga group from the Dance Department at Orot Teacher’s College in Elkana, Samaria, were top rate examples of modern dance.All the dancers were dressed modestly, including the ballerina soloist in Swan Lake, a fact which seemed as natural as it was beautiful. Some were married with head coverings, some had babies close by. The sound of babies cooing that accompanied the performances managed to seem natural as well. It was special to be with women only at the Day of Dance, to be part of an exclusive club whose members feel good about themselves, who have the commonality of pride in accomplishment, in what women can do and want to do.And one of the main things that women want to do at Emunah is to build a Jewish home, not because they have to but because they want to. That made it fitting that Emunah’s woman of the year was Dr. Chana Katan, a respected obs-gynm, author of medical-halakhic papers with her rabbi husband, and the mother of 13 children who said that her family comes first without any references to egalitarianism. Emunah College for Women in Jerusalem was established 30 years ago with the aim of offering religious women career opportunities in fields where there were no religious schools extant. The college offered Plastic Arts and Fine Arts, Drama and other fields which are full of halakhic pitfalls, making the schools for those subjects that existed before the college opened its doors unsuitable for religious young women.Teaching Fine Arts in an observant all women’s framework eliminated many of the problems. Ongoing queries to rabbinic authorities solved others. Studying the arts and planning theatre performances for women only became a reality. So did national awards and prizes for excellence. Audiences that filled the halls led to other performing groups. The creativity and talent had been there, just waiting.And then came the turn of the dance. Thirteen years ago, Orot Teacher’s College in Elkana, opened an academic course of study in dance for religious young women. They came in droves and danced. Talia Perlstein, who organized Emunah's Day of Dance with the help of the Orot College, heads the Department. Qaddafi Loyalists Bomb Oil Refinery at Sidra

For the first time, Libyan dictator Muammar Qaddafi's government forces bombed a major oil facility on Thursday afternoon. Loyalist fighter pilots struck the oil refinery at Sidra, about six miles west of the town of Ras Lanuf.Qaddafi loyalists also appeared to have recaptured the western town of Bin Jawad 30 miles from the strategic port, and the town of Zawiyah, 25 miles west of Tripoli.At least one oil tank was set afire at the Sidra oil export terminal. The pipeline delivering crude oil from southern fields to the port was also damaged in the air strike according to rebels who spoke with reporters, but there was no independent confirmation.It was the first time Libya's oil industry has been seriously affected by the month-long civil war. At least four rebels were killed in the attack, according to a doctor at Ras Lanuf Hospital.Government loyalists used Katyusha Grad missiles, mortars and air strikes in their efforts to retake the two petrochemical complexes located alongside the town.Libyan soldiers and secret police beat and threatened a team of three British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) journalists while they were on their way to cover events in Zawiyah.The news team was held for 21 hours and tortured with a mock execution while repeatedly being threatened with death. Opposition Leader Tzipi Livni Derides PM's Housing Solution

Opposition leader Tzipi Livni (Kadima) launched a rhetorical fusillade at Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu's remark today that Israel's housing crisis requires a metaphorical super-tanker as a solution. Netanyahu's supertanker consists of the establishment of committees responsible for cutting through red tape and fast-tracking approval for construction of new housing units. It can take years of wading through Israeli bureaucracy to obtain construction permits.Responding to the Prime Minister's proposal, Livni said, with all due respect to cosmic supertankers, it won't solve the housing problem in Israel. This program is not a cure-all. The middle class cannot continue to feel that it carries other sectors of society who should share the same burdens on its back.Echoing Livni's sentiments, student union members in Jerusalem said of the plan that It undermines the principle of equality, which can have far-reaching effects. This group, the middle class, is collapsing into poverty, and inflation is burning the middle class' money on fuel, bread and water.

Referring to the ongoing social worker's strike, Livni said, The government thinks it can outsource [social services, ed] and shirks responsibility. It is not possible to privatize this responsibility and transfer it to other organizations in order to continue paying lower wages to employees in those organizations. The result is that employees don't receive decent wages for their amazing contribution to society. Livni was referring to the practice of using workers from manpower companies or privately run organizations to avoid paying government salaries and perks.She criticized the practice of holding negotiations with employees, primarily social workers, while saying that those employed by the government will be paid more, but that those who work in outsourced organizations will not be paid benefits because it's not the government... it is!! Livni is not the only member of the opposition to criticize Netanyahu's construction plan. MK Yaakov Katz (National Union) said, Bibi is not super, and his plan is not a tanker. POMPTON LAKES, N.J. – Residents in the Northeast and parts of the Midwest nervously watched rising waterways Thursday as heavy rain swelled creeks and rivers, damaged houses, detoured commuters and forced amusement park workers to pack up equipment.
In Pompton Lakes, N.J., a pelting rain fell on Liri Zekirovski and a friend as they removed water-damaged furniture and flooring from Zekirovski's father-in-law's house next to the Pompton River.It was the second time the area had been waterlogged in less than a week. In a small playground across the street, remnants of Sunday night's flooding could be seen in a bicycle rack that was nearly covered in mud.It's getting ridiculous. It's like every time it rains this is going to happen, Zekirovski said as he pointed to a water line on the front of the house about 2 1/2 feet high. It seems like we're putting in a new kitchen every six months. It might be better just to eat outside.Flood watches were in effect across much of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio and New York.The National Weather Service issued a flood warning for the Delaware River from north of Philadelphia through southern New Jersey, where moderate coastal flooding was predicted. The weather service said minor flooding was also likely Friday on the Schuylkill River and the Brandywine Creek in Chadds Ford, Pa., and the local school district canceled classes.

The Mid-Atlantic was also gearing up for rain-related problems. People in the path of tsunamis may get a few more precious minutes of warning time, thanks to a newly developed tool.The system looks at the earthquakes on the seafloor that cause the massive and often deadly waves.Using this system, we could in the future warn local populations, thus minimizing the death toll from tsunamis, said Andrew Newman of Georgia Tech’s School of Earth and Atmospheric Science.According to the scientists who developed it, the system, known as RTerg, could help predict the approach of tsunamis and reduce the death toll by giving local residents valuable time to move to safer ground.The researchers behind RTerg say they used its algorithms to identify an October 2010 earthquake in the Indian Ocean as a rare and destructive tsunami earthquake. The 7.8 magnitude quake generated waves up to 56 feet (17 meters) high, and killed as many as 430 people on the Indonesian island of Sumatra.Here's how the new system works. Usually within four minutes, RTerg gets a notification from one of the tsunami warning centers around the Pacific region that an earthquake has occurred. This notice gives the system the quake's location, depth and approximate magnitude.

If the earthquake is determined to be of magnitude 6.5 or higher, it takes about a minute to request and receive data from around 150 seismic stations around the world. Once the system collects these data, it uses its algorithm to run through every second of the rupture and determine the incremental growth of energy and ascertain whether the quake was a tsunami earthquake.The Sumatran event was the first tsunami quake that occurred when RTerg was online in real time. With that quake, the system identified the event as a potential tsunami earthquake after 8.5 minutes, and sent a notification out shortly thereafter.For most tsunami earthquakes, inundation of the coastal environment doesn't occur until about 30 to 40 minutes after the quake. So we'll have about 20 to 30 minutes to get our information to an automatic warning system, or to the authorities, Newman said. This gives us a tangible amount of time to get people out of the way.Currently, Newman and his team are working to test and implement a technique for RTerg that could shave another minute or more from the warning time. BALI, Indonesia – A powerful earthquake off Indonesia rattled the popular resort island of Bali early Friday, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, officials said.The U.S. Geological Survey said the 6.5-magnitude quake struck at 1:08 a.m. (1708 GMT Thursday) and was centered 315 miles (510 kilometers) beneath the ocean floor.It hit waters 160 miles (260 kilometers) northeast of Bali.

Peter King at odds with Democrats on Muslims at congressional hearing

A hearing on radicalization among American Muslims began Thursday morning with two congressmen offering sharply different - and, at times, emotional - views of the Muslim community.Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.), who chairs the House Committee on Homeland Security, opened the much anticipated congressional hearing with a statement that steered clear of his most controversial statements from the past, when he said more than 80 percent of American mosques were tainted by radicalism. But, King said, reports from law enforcement and the Obama administration indicated that Islamic terrorists were seeking to recruit American Muslims. And he cited a public opinion poll that showed support for suicide bombings among a small fraction of Muslim men.The overwhelming majority of Muslim Americans are outstanding Americans,King said.But there are realities we cannot ignore.Moderate leadership must emerge from the Muslim community,King said.But an emotional rebuttal came from the hearing's first witness, Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.). Ellison, one of two Muslims in Congress, said he feared that the hearings could tar the entire Muslim community because of the actions of a few.We need to conduct a thorough, fair analysis and to do no harm. The approach of today's hearing, I fear, does not meet these standards, Ellison said.

Ellison read an account of Mohammed Salman Hamdani, 23, a Muslim first responder who died in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Repeatedly choking back tears, the lawmaker read an account of Hamdani's love for his country and for Star Wars, and described how rumors had falsely connected him to the terrorists behind the attacks.
It was only when his remains were identified that these lies were exposed, Ellison said, his voice breaking. Mohammed Salman Hamdani was a fellow American who gave his life for other Americans.After Ellison, the committee heard from two men who described seeing their own relatives become radicalized in American mosques. Melvin Bledsoe, of Memphis, said his son turned to radical Islam in college in Nashville, then traveled to Yemen.As he spoke, committee staff put up large posters of Bledsoe's son Carlos - who changed his name to Abdul Hakim Mujahid Muhammad - on a stand. First, a photo showed a sweetly smiling little boy in a red basketball uniform, then a young man in a tuxedo. Bledsoe's Memphis accent broke the frequent sound of camera shutters snapping as he read a statement about his son becoming more and more distant from his family and culture.He even took the photo of Martin Luther King off the wall,he said.

Bledsoe's son eventually returned from Yemen and opened fire on a military recruiting station in Arkansas. A U.S. soldier died in the attack.Americans are sitting around doing nothing about radical extremists as if Carlos's story [isn't] true. This is a big elephant in the room. Our society continues not to see it, Bledsoe said.Abdirizak Bihi, a Somali American from Minnesota, described how a nephew turned radical and left to fight with an Islamic militia in Somalia. His nephew was killed there. In questions from Rep. Dan Lungren (R-Calif.), Bihi said he had been discouraged by mosque leaders from seeking answers about what became of his nephew and others who left for Somalia.If you do that, you're going to be responsible for the eradication of all mosques and Islamic society in North America, Bihi said, recounting what he was told. You will have eternal fire and hell.Lungren responded, Would you call that intimidation, sir? Intimidation in its purest form, Bihi said.

Another witness, Zuhdi Jasser of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy, said he believes some Muslim communities need to stop thinking of themselves as separate from American society.It's a minority, but it's a mindset that exists in some mosques ... and it's a significant number, Jasser said. It is about that separatism, the idea that the Islamic state takes precedence, that Islamic law takes precedence over American law.Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca described cooperation his department has fostered with Muslims. He cautioned against aiming suspicion at Muslims generally.This plays directly into the terrorist propaganda that the West's war on terror is actually a war on Islam, Baca said.The hearing's stated purpose is to examine the Muslim community in America, but committee members seem equally focused on examining Congress itself. The witnesses include no representatives of large Muslim groups, and only one member of law enforcement - the sheriff, called by Democrats.Instead, a major focus of the hearing seems to be whether there should be a hearing on this subject at all. In between substantive questions of the witnesses, legislators traded jabs about whether they should even be there, asking these questions.

It has already been classified as a way to demonize and castigate, said Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (R-Tex.). She waved up a copy of the Constitution: This hearing right now is playing into al-Qaeda, around the world.The committee's ranking Democrat, Bennie Thompson (Miss.), gave a statement after King, saying that he worried the hearing could be used by terrorist recruiters to show that America is hostile to Muslims generally.We cannot give this lie a place to rest, Thompson said. With about 90 seats in the beige-walled, chandeliered hearing room - small for a hearing of this size - space was very tight. Imams sat shoulder-to-shoulder with rabbis and human rights lawyers. A long skinny table up against the wall was jammed with reporters.Security was tight in the hallways, where a line of about 100 had already formed by 8:30 a.m. on the third floor of the marble-floored Cannon House office building. Police officers were everywhere.The first three in line were women from New York, including Aisha Ghani, 30, a Muslim PhD student in national security at Stanford who took the overnight bus to bear witness to what must be the most absurd moment in American history.Even if this is under the guise of something reasonable, there is no question this is about Islam, she said. American Muslims do not pose a threat, and the King hearings, she said, are about justifying Islamophobia.

With her was Amna Akbar, 32, a Muslim human rights lawyer based at New York University. She called the hearing political theater meant to distract from the failed war on terror.Outside, two protesters stood on the rainy sidewalk along Independence Avenue SE. Virginia Spatz, a Chicago native who has lived in the Washington area for 25 years, held a sign that said Pluralism or Perish.I don't want this hearing to go on without some kind of visible protest, Spatz said. All religious people should be horrified that one religion is being singled out like this.Next to her, Galen Muhammad of Forestville said that he'd heard leaders in Muslim religious services tell congregations that anyone with radical ideas should leave and spend their life on a desert island, where they can't hurt anyone. WASHINGTON: A US lawmaker on Thursday was to hold provocative hearings on the alleged radicalization of US Muslims, in a move critics say fans anti-Islam sentiment nearly a decade after the 9/11 attacks.

Representative Peter King, the Republican who chairs the House Homeland Security Committee, has promised a thorough probe, setting the stage for one of the most controversial congressional debates since the 2001 attacks.I want (Americans) to realize the extent to which Al-Qaeda is attempting to radicalize within the Muslim-American community, King said Wednesday in summing up his intent.The nation’s major Muslim groups, none of which have been invited to testify at the Capitol Hill hearing, and other rights defenders have blasted King’s fear-mongering.The seven million Americans (who are Muslim)… deserve more than collective guilt by suspicion, said Shahid Buttar, who heads the non-denominational and non-partisan Bill of Rights Defense Committee.By trafficking in bias and xenophobia, Representative King aims to essentially be the (Joseph) McCarthy of the 21st century,Buttar said.McCarthyism refers to allegations of treason or subversion without proof, and was coined after the former US senator’s anti-communist witch-hunts in the 1940s and 50s.

King has said that Muslim leaders and mosque imams are doing too little to stop the radicalization of young Americans and are not cooperating with law enforcement. He has also said most US mosques are controlled by extremists.The charges have alarmed US Muslim communities, the very ones President Barack Obama’s administration insists have been crucial to helping reduce the extremist threat.Obama’s Attorney General Eric Holder shot down King’s assessment that Muslim leaders have not helped law enforcement, stressing that they have contributed significantly to thwarting attacks.
We don’t want to stigmatize, we don’t want to alienate entire communities, Holder said.Imam Johari Abdul-Malik of the Coordinating Council of Muslim Organizations insisted that King was launching a modern-day witch-hunt.But he and others acknowledged that some American Muslims, while the numbers are small, had indeed been radicalized in the United States.We’re not in denial as a community that something is going on, he said. What could prompt such a dramatic fall? An oil shock that could be kick-started by Friday’s day of rage protests in Saudi Arabia or something else? According to Nenner, who studies war and peace cycles, the collapse will be initiated by a major war starting at the end of 2012 to 2013,a startling claim to which the host David Asman merely responded, wow.Excuse me? A financial strategist who has been deadly accurate in the past and has just told all his clients to get out of the market predicts a major war that will lead to a stock market collapse and the best Asman can come up with is wow? Since the hosts failed to follow up on Nenner’s astounding statement, who this war will be between and how it will start is anyone’s guess, but it seems inevitable that its roots will be in the current unrest we see spreading like wildfire across North African and the Middle East.

Bill Gross, the manager of the biggest bond fund in the world, has forgotten more about bonds than most of us will ever learn. That is why the big move that PIMCO has just made is so unsettling. At one time PIMCO held more U.S. government debt than any other bond fund on the globe, but now news has come out that they have gotten rid of all their U.S. government-related securities. So should we be alarmed? For months Gross has been warning that the bull market in bonds is coming to an end, and now it looks like he is putting his words into action.s Gross has often publicly decried the rampant government spending that has been going on over the last several years, and apparently he has seen enough. He is taking his ball and he is going home. This really is a stunning move by PIMCO. Gross must really believe that something fundamental has shifted. Gross didn’t get to where he is today by being stupid. But so far world financial markets are taking this news in stride. Nobody seems all that alarmed that the largest bond fund in the world has dumped all of their U.S. Treasuries. But with world financial markets in such a state of chaos right now, shouldn’t we all take note when one of the biggest players in the game makes such a bold move?

Gross believes that interest rates on U.S. Treasuries are way too low right now and that they will start going up when the Federal Reserve ends the current round of quantitative easing in June. Gross has indicated that if interest rates on U.S. Treasuries go up high enough, PIMCO might get back in.But if interest rates do start going up that is going to make servicing the monolithic U.S. national debt much more expensive, and that would not be good news for U.S. government finances.But would the Federal Reserve really allow interest rates on U.S. Treasuries to go up substantially? Wouldn’t they just step in at some point and start buying U.S. government debt again? Probably.But the truth is that the Ponzi Scheme of the U.S. Treasury issuing bonds and the Federal Reserve buying them up cannot last forever as Gross noted in his March newsletter….Basically, the recent game plan is as simple as the Ohio State Buckeyes’ three yards and a cloud of dust in the 1960s. When applied to the Treasury market it translates to this: The Treasury issues bonds and the Fed buys them. What could be simpler, and who’s to worry? This Sammy Scheme as I’ve described it in recent Outlooks is as foolproof as Ponzi and Madoff until… until… well, until it isn’t.Gross also noted in his newsletter that the Federal Reserve is currently buying up about 70 percent of all new U.S. government debt.

So what is going to happen when that stops? Nobody knows for certain, but it sure is going to be interesting to watch.The market for U.S. Treasuries has not been working normally for quite some time now, and there is some legitimate doubt as to whether it will ever fully get back to normal again.Meanwhile, the sovereign debt crisis in Europe continues to get even worse.The yield on 10-year Portuguese bonds is now above 7 percent, the yield on 10-year Irish bonds is now above 9 percent and the yield on 10-year Greek bonds is now above 12 percent.Most people expect European leaders to soon come to an agreement to add billions more to existing bailout funds, but there is no guarantee that is actually going to happen.In fact, the Germans are making waves by insisting that the financially troubled nations in the EU must be willing to agree to limits on their future budget deficits. A recent article on CNBC described the situation this way….Before the Germans will agree to pump in extra cash from their taxpayers, backed by the French, they want each leader to agree to legislation at home that will limit the size of their future national deficits. The Greeks are already refusing point blank. Things may boil to the surface at an extraordinary summit on Friday.So what if an agreement can’t be reached? Could the dominoes in Europe start to fall?

Very few people actually want to see a wave of sovereign defaults in Europe, but the current situation cannot go on forever. At some point the Germans are going to get sick and tired of bailing out other members of the EU.The global addiction to debt is about to start having some very serious consequences.For decades, most of the governments of the industrialized world have been running up debt as if it would never come back to haunt them. Now the world is absolutely covered in red ink and everyone is looking for a way to solve the problem.But there is not going to be a debt jubilee to come along and save everyone. This debt bubble is either going to keep expanding or it is going to burst.At one point, at least some of the debt-ridden nations will try to inflate their way out of debt by recklessly printing money. To a certain extent that has already been going on. But it will not work. It will only cause a whole lot of inflation.This is just more evidence that any economic system based on debt is destined to fall. When we allowed a private central bank to start issuing debt-based currency in this country back in 1913 we set ourselves up to fail. As I have written about previously, the Federal Reserve should never have been allowed to come into existence, and it should have been shut down by Congress long before now.But now the United States is caught in the same debt trap that most of the other nations around the world are caught in. The global addiction to debt is going to have some very, very serious consequences. Instead of moving into a great time of peace and prosperity, everything is about to come falling apart.Things could have been different. Things did not have to turn out this way. But here we are on the edge of one of the biggest financial disasters in human history and most Americans still don’t understand what is happening.

Take the religion out of the city council meetings

Ihave to give credit to rookie Owen Sound Councillor Colleen Purdon for bringing up the issue of reciting the Lord's Prayer at the start of each council meeting. Though fellow Councillor Arlene Wright says there isn't a problem with this practice, I have to disagree with her position.I attended the inaugural meeting of the new Owen Sound Council in December. It was a great night at the Roxy Theatre where people of all ages and backgrounds gathered to celebrate our newly-elected, democratic government. That said, it wasn't quite as inclusive when a Christian religious official led the audience in the Lord's Prayer. To me, it all seemed a bit odd at a political event and one that was for the entire community. And that's coming from someone who is Christian and was raised with Christian values and traditions. I have also been to many other council chambers in Ontario and not once in the past 20-plus years has a prayer ever been recited.

I'm sure there was a reason for the prayer before such meetings way back when. Our ancestors likely thought it provided politicians with a moment to consider morals and values as they made their important decisions. But we do live in a different time and place today -- a Christian prayer shouldn't be required to make sound moral judgements or decisions.To paraphrase Pierre Trudeau's famous that the state has no place in the bedrooms of the nation, I would suggest that religion has no place in the political forums of the nation. Long ago in a place far, far away, most of Canadian society was Christian (well, that's not true since the First Nations people certainly weren't but our ancestors regretfully ignored that fact). Few people were non-believers and religion was a significant part of people's daily lives. That's hardly true anymore.Coun. Wright should really take a look at her quote that we are a Christian country. That is certainly a very sweeping statement and not accurate at all today. Yes, the majority of Canadians are Christians or would say they were raised in a Christian family. Many of us though who were raised in Christian families may not necessarily be regularly practicing and may very well belong to families with other faiths through marriage etc. Then there are all the other religions that people follow from Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Taoism, and many others including the rich, spiritual traditions of our First Nations people. That's not to mention the non-believers, atheists, anti-theists, Raëlists, and more.

True, the majority of people today living in Grey-Bruce are likely of Christian heritage or beliefs but that's mainly because most new immigrants have tended not to settle in this part of Ontario. In places like Toronto, Mississauga, Vaughan, Newmarket, Brampton, Pickering, Kitchener-Waterloo and Guelph, there would be no debate -- no Lord's Prayer in respect of the multicultural and multi-faith communities that they are today. Owen Sound (and for that matter Grey-Bruce) has yet to achieve the population diversity of many other parts of this province. That said, there are still many people in our community who have a non-Christian cultural heritage.While council has previously asked other "faiths" to come and lead a prayer and no one has shown up in recent time, one cannot automatically surmise that there's no interest. One must consider some key facts in the assessment of the situation. Beyond the local synagogue, all the other religious institutions in Owen Sound are Christianbased. Even if there were people coming each week, they would only be reiterating the Christian fact in most instances.As the city looks for ways to be more efficient and save tax dollars, I would suggest they just cut to the chase and forgot about staff reports and further debate. Council should vote on the matter soon and clearly consider the time and place we now live in.They may want to keep in mind the new tagline that Owen Sound has adopted, Where you want to live. To truly make that statement inviting to everyone, it may be good for council to set an inviting example and take the religion out of their meetings. By all means, a moment of reflection before dealing with important civic issues is likely a good idea. Nato is not looking for reasons to intervene in Libya, but as a defence and security organisation we have the necessary plans, Nato chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen said in a video message on Wednesday (9 March).Speaking to Brussels journalists that same day, US ambassador to Nato Ivo Daalder said that the military planning was looking at a full spectrum of possibilities, ranging from maritime and air surveillance in the international waters off the Libyan coast to several options for a no-fly zone.Mr Daalder stressed that these plans had to be drafted so that if a request to intervene is formulated, the military alliance can move quickly.

Deployment of terrestrial troops is not on the table and neither is the protection of the country's oil and gas infrastructure, one senior US official said. Any move would have to have a clean and proper legal base, preferably with a green light from the UN Security Council - which diplomats say is hard to achieve due to reluctance from China and Russia. As for the controversial no-fly zone, defence ministers are likely to discuss having all the Libyan territory covered or just Tripoli and the adjacent areas still under Colonel Gaddafi's control and whether the flying ban would apply around the clock or only during certain hours.US defence minister Robert Gates on Wednesday told congressmen that there was a lot of loose talk about some of these military options.Let's just call a spade a spade. EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - US demands for EU banking data under the so-called Swift agreement are too general and abstract for Europol to allow a proper evaluation of the necessity of those transfers, an inspection report carried out by the police agency's own supervisory body says.The EU-US deal, which entered into force in August 2010, allows anti-terrorism officials in Washington to get large sets of banking data, provided the EU joint-police body in The Hague, Europol, pre-authorises it.Giving Europol a role in this process was one of the concessions made to the European Parliament after it rejected an initial agreement.In the official version of its report, the EU supervisory body notes that out of four data transfer requests, Europol declined none, despite having serious misgivings. It was found that the US requests were too general and too abstract to allow proper evaluation of the necessity of the requested data transfers. Despite this, Europol approved each request it received,the report said.Extra information may have been given to Europol staff by the US Treasury department, but this was done orally and the supervisory body cannot certify or comment on those statements, it added.

The publication of the report represents another blow to the controversial agreement which some MEPs want to scrap altogether.It's official now: US terror investigators get such broad data from Europe, that even the supervisory body of Europol is concerned about a breach of basic data protection criteria, Green German MEP Jan Philipp Albrecht said in a press release calling for the deal to be scrapped. The fallout from this report may also have an impact on other data transfer agreements with the US awaiting the approval of the European Parliament.Our support for this and other, forthcoming agreements clearly rely on the trustworthiness of our partners, Dutch Liberal MEP Sophie in't Veld said, noting that the Europol report does not inspire much confidence.In Germany, data protection czar Peter Schaar also asked member states to correct the massive deficiencies identified in the report and declassify the rest of the evaluation.Is Europol even able and does it want to properly acknowledge the guardian function it has been entrusted with? EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - Euro-deputies have voted to reduce their presence in Strasbourg slightly, cutting one of their monthly week-long sessions in the French city.While the reduction is only moderate, it is a sign of the growing frustration by a majority of MEPs at being required to make a monthly trek to the Franco-German border town and of their ambition to force a change to what many have described for years as a travelling circus.The deputies voted 357 to 253, with 40 abstentions, to cut one of their plenary meetings held in Strasbourg in 2012 and 2013 and instead combine two October sessions in a single week.It is the first time in a decade that MEPs have attempted to limit travel to the city. In 2001, MEPs did away with Friday meetings.The parliament in effect is based in Brussels, along with the European Commission, the Council of Ministers and EU diplomatic representations, as well as NGOS, journalists, corporate headquarters, trade union offices and Nato. UK Liberal MEP Edward McMillan-Scott, the chair of a cross-party study group lobbying in favour of a single seat for the parliament, said: Today's vote clearly shows that a majority of MEPs are fed up with the parliament's constant travel between Brussels and Strasbourg.He said he intends to put forward a proposal shortly to have the question of a single seat debated and voted on by the parliament as a whole, making use of its new right to propose changes to the treaty.The parliament has been silent on this issue for far too long, but spoke out today,he said.

Report: Deepening Rift Between Germany and Israel

According to a report which was published this week in The New York Times, a serious rift has been opened between Germany and Israel in the last few weeks.The report cited the recent vote in the UN Security Council over calling the Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria illegal as one of the causes of the rift.The resolution was submitted by the Palestinian Authority but did not end up passing as the US had vetoed it. However, all the other 14 members of the Council, including Germany, voted in favor of the resolution.The report in the Times noted that the German vote in favor of condemning Israel was authorized by Chancellor Angela Merkel herself, who had unswervingly supported Israel since taking office in 2005.The report also notes that over the past few months Merkel has made it clear to the Israeli government that it cannot expect unqualified support from Berlin if it allows the conflict with the PA to drag on.The situation in Egypt should not be seen as a reason not to continue the negotiation process, the report quotes Merkel as saying at the Institute for National Security Studies at Tel Aviv University last month. If we sit and wait, we might face an even more difficult situation.Israeli and German officials said that Merkel’s remarks were made after difficult talks with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu. The officials also said that following the German vote at the UN, Netanyahu phoned Merkel to express his disappointment.In response, Merkel said: How dare you? You are the one who has disappointed us. You haven’t made a single step to advance peace.

This conversation, which was confirmed by Israeli and German officials, reveals a deep rift between Berlin and Jerusalem, said the report.A senior Israeli government official told the Times: We are disappointed with Germany’s decision. It reflects the frustration that the peace process is not moving forwards and that we are at an impasse. Somehow in Europe, there is an expectation that if there is an impasse, it is Israel who must take the step to break it.However, Ruprecht Polenz, a conservative lawmaker and chairman of the German Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, told the Times that while the vote was highly unusual given Germany’s practice of abstaining from or voting against any UN resolutions criticizing Israel, it did not mean that Germany no longer defended Israel’s security.It means that Chancellor Angela Merkel is trying to explain to the Israeli government that with the extraordinary changes taking place across the Middle East, time is not on its side when it comes to resolving the conflict with the Palestinians, said Polenz.

The Times also noted several shifts in the relations between Germany and Israel in recent months, which began when the German Parliament unanimously passed a resolution criticizing Israel’s naval blockade of the Gaza Strip and Israel’s storming of the Mavi Marmara, which was filled with IHH terrorists who tried to break through into Gaza under the guise of peace activists, and assaulted soldiers as they entered the ship.Another shift was noted two weeks ago when the German Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, which had planned to visit Israel and the Gaza Strip, canceled the trip after the Israeli government had refused the delegation entry to Gaza.We wanted to see German-funded projects and meet UN representatives in Gaza, the Times quoted Rainer Stinner, a lawmaker from the Free Democratic Party, as saying. We had no intentions of meeting Hamas.Stinner dismissed the idea that Israel’s refusal was linked to the UN vote. Israel’s security is Germany’s priority, he said. But the settlements are not in Israel’s interests. They are counterproductive. Our criticism does not mean that Germany’s special relationship with Israel is in doubt.But despite the new found tension with Germany, seven new bilateral agreements were signed in Israel just last month at a joint meeting of Israeli and German Cabinet ministers. One of the agreements affirmed that the countries would increase their cooperation in fighting terror, while others dealt with bilateral socio-economic and cultural relations.

Netanyahu said after the agreements were signed that We are allies, Israel and Germany, and we have a great desire, on both sides, to strengthen our relationship and our bilateral cooperation. We also have the strong desire to advance peace and security in our region. Chancellor Merkel and I spoke at length about several ideas in this regard. Hariri Accuses Hizbullah of Militarizing Shiite Community

Lebanon's interim Prime Minister Saad Hariri accused Hizbullah of seeking to militarize the Shiite community, Lebanon's Daily Star reported. The accusation is a renewal of Hariri's criticism of the hermaphrodite terrorist organization turned political party's use of armed force to influence Lebanon's civic life.Addressing delegates from his Future Movement, Hariri also took aim at Hizbullah’s fierce campaign against the United Nations backed Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL), saying it was a direct invitation to sectarian incitement. Hariri called on Hizbullah to consider the consequences of the supremacy of its weapons on national life in Lebanon.I call on them [Hizbullah] to stop this refrain and to reflect on the situation in the country as a result of... continuing attempts to impose the tutelage of arms on the political system, Hariri said.Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea told Future News television on Tuesday: The strategic decision of [Hizbullah’s] arms is in the hands of Damascus and Tehran and it influences the internal game.

Hizbullah has mounted a campaign to discredit and abolish the STL, which it dismisses as an American-Israeli tool designed to incite sectarian strife. In sharp contrast, Hariri and his March 14 allies have supported STL as the only means to uncover the truth behind his father’s killing.Hariri asked, Isn’t the campaign against the STL and the insistence on disrupting international justice into martyr [former] Prime Minister Rafik Hariri’s assassination a direct invitation for incitement and a violation of the rules of national consensus? Hariri’s remarks came as his Future Movement and its allies in the March 14 coalition have been mobilizing their supporters for a heavy turnout at next Sunday’s rally in Beirut to mark six years since the movement was launched on March 14, 2005 – a month after the assassination of Hariri’s father, former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri – to defend the country’s freedom, sovereignty and independence and call for a Syrian troop withdrawal.The rally is intended as a show of force amidst rising tensions between Hizbullah and its detractors ahead of the STL's forthcoming indictment. Daniel Shapiro Named U.S. Ambassador to Israel

U.S. President Barack Obama officially announced on Wednesday that his top aide Daniel (Dan) Shapiro will be the next U.S. ambassador to Israel.Shapiro currently serves as senior director for the Middle East and North Africa on the National Security Council and was a key adviser on the Middle East to Obama's presidential campaign in 2008. He also played a role in Obama's outreach to the American Jewish community during the campaign.Shapiro, who is a fluent Hebrew speaker, was born in Illinois and studied at Brandeis and Harvard universities, where he earned a master’s degree in Middle Eastern Politics. He has worked closely with Dennis Ross and U.S. Middle East envoy George Mitchell. He has also traveled to Syria with the objective of paving the road for a peace treaty with Damascus.AFP noted that Shapiro’s nomination, as well as the fact that he is a senior White House appointee rather than a career diplomat, will likely lead to talk that Obama is seeking a direct line to Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu.Prior to his work on Obama’s campaign, Shapiro was a vice president at a Washington-based marketing and communications firm and held positions on the National Security staff in the Clinton administration, as well as in the offices of Senators Dianne Feinstein of California and Bill Nelson of Florida.

Shapiro’s nomination requires confirmation by the Senate. World's Billionaires 2011: A Record Year In Numbers, Money And Impact

BRIC countries surge; Carlos Slim widens lead atop list.

This 25th year of tracking global wealth was one to remember. The 2011 Billionaires List breaks two records: total number of listees (1,210) and combined wealth ($4.5 trillion). This horde surpasses the gross domestic product of Germany, one of only six nations to have fewer billionaires this year. BRICs led the way: Brazil, Russia, India and China produced 108 of the 214 new names. These four nations are home to one in four members, up from one in ten five years ago. Before this year only the U.S. had ever produced more than 100 billionaires. China now has 115 and Russia 101.

Atop the heap is Mexico's Carlos Slim Helu, who added $20.5 billion to his fortune, more than any other billionaire. The telecom mogul, who gets 62% of his fortune from America Movil ( AMX - news - people ), is now worth $74 billion and has pulled far ahead of his two closest rivals. Bill Gates, No. 2, and Warren Buffett, No. 3, both added a more modest $3 billion to their piles and are now worth $56 billion and $50 billion, respectively. Gates, who now gets 70% of his fortune from investments outside of Microsoft ( MSFT - news - people ), has actually been investing in the Mexican stock market and has holdings in Mexican Coke bottler Femsa and Grupo Televisa ( TV - news - people ).While nearly all emerging markets showed solid gains, wealth creation is moving at an especially breakneck speed in Asia-Pacific. The region now has a record 332 billionaires, up from 234 a year ago and 130 at the depth of the financial crisis in 2009. Sizzling stock markets are behind the surge. Three-fourths of Asia's 105 newcomers get the bulk of their fortunes from stakes in publicly traded companies, 25 of which have been public only since the start of 2010.America's wealthiest still dominate the global ranks, but the U.S. is losing its grip. One in three billionaires is an American, down from nearly one out of two a decade ago. It has 10 more than last year but 56 fewer than its 2008 peak. The U.S. is adding new billionaires at a much slower pace; just 6% of its 413 billionaires are new this year compared with 47% of China's and 30% of Russia's.

Still there are plenty of inspiring newcomers who figured out clever ways to get rich. The most obvious example is the success of Facebook, whose soaring valuation over the past couple of years--based on the most recent institutional round the company is worth $50 billion--has spawned six billionaires. Leading the group is Facebook's CEO Mark Zuckerberg, whose fortune jumped 238% to $13.5 billion in the past year. Also joining him in the world ranks are his cofounders Eduardo Saverin and Dustin Moskovitz, its first president Sean Parker (played by Justin Timberlake in The Social Network) and the Russian Internet investor Yuri Milner. Moskovitz, 26, is eight days younger than his former college roommate Zuckerberg, making him the world's youngest billionaire.The frenzy among big investors for all things social pushed up private market values of online gaming outfit Zynga and online group-buying site Groupon, creating two more new billionaires, Mark Pincus (who taught people to farm on Facebook) and Eric Lefkofsky (who was Groupon's lead investor).

So these are the people who are making money off the backs of the 99% of the population who are losing money. The list should be titled: World's Criminals Against Humanity 2011: A record Year In Nu.Other notable American newcomers include Do Won and Jin Sook Chang, the cofounders of Forever21, and Chris Cline, who owns 3 billion tons of coal reserves, mostly in Illinois.Why do we spend so much time counting other people's money? Because these moguls have the power to shape our world. Telecom billionaire turned prime minister Najib Mikati is keeping Lebanon's government together. Ernesto Bertarelli, who lost the America's Cup to Larry Ellison last year, is now focusing on saving the oceans from mass extinction. Bill Gates isn’t the richest man in the world. The Microsoft co-founder isn’t exactly a slouch, mind you. According to the 2011 version of the Forbes list of the world’s billionaires, he’s the second-richest person on Earth, with a net worth of $56 billion. That’s up a couple of billion from last year, a little ahead of his card-playing buddy Warren Buffett at $50 billion, but well behind Mexico’s Carlos Slim Helu at $74 billion. Had he not given $30 billion away, Bill would still top the list.The tech sector is well represented on this year’s list, which overall includes 1,210 people (the most ever) who together control $4.5 trillion in wealth (again, the most ever.)Tech titans represent 11 of the top 100 of the world’s wealthiest people:

•Oracle’s Larry Ellison moves up one notch to 5th, with $39.5 billion – up 41% from last year.
•Tied for 24th were the Google twins, Sergey Brin and Larry Page. That’s unchanged from the 2010 list.
•Amazon.com CEO Jeff Bezos jumps to 30th, from 43. He’s worth $18.1 billion.
•Richest non-American tech titan? Azim Premji, of Indian IT consulting firm Wipro. He’s 36th, with $16.8 billion.
•Dell founder Michael Dell slipped to 44th, from 37th, although his worth moved up by $1.1 billion to $14.6 billion.
•Dell is now just ahead of Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, who fell to 46th, from 33rd. He’s got $14.5 billion, same as last year.
•Just missing the top 50: Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. Ranked 52nd, he’s worth an estimated $13.5 billion.
•The third Microsoftie on the list is co-founder Paul Allen. He’s ranked 57th, which is down from 37th last year, although his net worth ticked up a bit to $13 billion.
•Jumping into the top 100 was Robin Li, the CEO of China-based search engine Baidu, at 95th on the list, with $9.4 billion. That’s up from $258th, and $3.5 billion, in 2010.
You’ll notice who didn’t make the top 100: Apple CEO Steve Jobs. But he didn’t miss by much. He’s 110th on the list, with $8.3 billion; last year he was ranked 136, with $6.1 billion. Taking his old spot at 136, weirdly enough, is his new arch-enemy Google chairman Eric Schmidt, with $7 billion.

A few other tech tidbits:

•Highest ranked private tech company exec, excluding Facebook: James Goodnight, CEO of privately held SAS Institute. He’s tied at 141st, with $6.9 billion.
•Highest ranked European tech exec: SAP co-founder Hasso Plattner. He’s got $6.9 billion, too.
•Highest ranked Taiwanese tech execs: the husband-and-wife team of Cher Wang and Wenchi Chen. Chen is CEO of chip maker Via Technologies. Wang is chairman of both Via and handset maker HTC.
•Highest ranked billionaire other than Steve Jobs to benefit from huge demand for the iPad and iPhone: Hon Hai Precision’s Terry Gou, ranked 179th, with $5.7 billion.
There are a host of other familiar names:

•Former Intel exec Gordon Moore – he’s the namesake of Moore’s Law – at 268.
•Dolby Labs founder and namesake Ray Dolby, at 310.
•H. Ross Perot – both of them. Perot pere is 323, with $3.4 billion. Perot fils is 879th, with $1.4 billion.
•Research In Motion co-CEOs Mike Lazaridis and James Balsillie both make the billionaire’s roster.
•The ranks of Google billionaires includes additional names, including Sun co-founder Andreas von Bechtolsheim and Stanford prof David Cheriton.
•There’s a sprinkling of VCs, including Kleiner Perkins partner John Doerr, ex-Kleiner partner Vinod Khosla and Sequoia’s Michael Moritz.
•Billionaires who sold their companies to Oracle include Tom Siebel – namesake of Siebel Systems – and David Duffield, he of Peoplesoft.
•Web 1.0 billionaires on the list include one-time AOL chief Steve Case, former eBay CEO Meg Whitman, and Yahoo co-founders Jerry Yang and David Filo.
•The list also includes half the cast of The Social Network, including not just Zuck, but also Sean Parker, Eduardo Saverin and Dustin Moskovitz, part of a growing group of social networking billionaires.

LVMH’s Bernard Arnault Moves Up to No. 4 on Billionaires List

Bernard Arnault owns the yacht builder Royal Van Lent and has stakes in French retailer Carrefour.Bernard Arnault has called 2010 a great vintage for LVMH, and for good reason. Besides making record revenues at LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, Arnault’s burgeoning $41 billion net worth landed him the No. 4 spot on this year’s list of the world’s billionaires.The stellar year at LVMH came largely from success in its handbag and champagne divisions. All told, LVMH revenues reached €20.3 billion ($28.26 billion), up from €17.1 billion in 2009. Total profits exceeded €4 billion.Individually, Louis Vuitton saw record double-digit revenue growth, while Dom Pérignon and Krug recorded significant increases. The group’s watch and jewelery division had profits that doubled.

That’s not all. LVMH just bought a controlling stake in the Italian jewel house Bulgari. It also now owns 70 percent of Nude Skincare, the line developed by Bono’s wife Ali Hewson. Not to mention that 20-percent share in Hermès it bought in December.The sudden firing of designer John Galliano at Dior Couture for his anti-Semitic assault on a couple at a Paris cafe apparently had little effect on LVMH stock values. And Kate Moss’ cigarette-dangling return to the runway at the Louis Vuitton show earlier today in Paris cinched the LVMH allure–she was heralded as a smash hit.Arnault, 62, owns a controlling stake of all those brands–plus Givenchy, Fendi, Berluti, Tag Heuer, Sephora, Kenzo, Hublot, Loewe, Guerlain, De Beers and a host of other luxury names.An accomplished pianist and father of five (son Antoine runs Berluti; daughter Delphine is highly placed at Dior), Arnault has earned a reputation as an unemotional and unrelenting businessman with an absurdly keen sense of timing. But he also has a deep appreciation for art and those who create it–after all, he’s the one who hired John Galliano, Marc Jacobs and Alexander McQueen.

When I spoke with him at his offices last fall, he showed me some of his Agnes Martin paintings and a pencil sketch drawn by Christian Dior himself, which Arnault had bought that morning. He also talked about how much he enjoys playing tennis with his kids.Last year Arnault placed 7th on our list with an estimated net worth of $27.5 billion. (Ralph Lauren came in 173rd both last year and this year, with a total net worth of $5.8 billion for 2011, up from $4.6 billion in 2010.) As expected, Arnault’s wealth has nearly doubled; at this point, I predict France’s richest man has nowhere to go but up.Carlos Slim watch out.

World's Richest People-Bill Gates No Longer World's Richest Man

For the third time in three years, the world has a new richest man. Riding surging prices of his various telecom holdings, including giant mobile outfit America Movil, Mexican tycoon Carlos Slim Helu has beaten out Americans Bill Gates and Warren Buffett to become the wealthiest person on earth and nab the top spot on the 2010 Forbes list of the World's Billionaires.Slim's fortune has swelled to an estimated $53.5 billion, up $18.5 billion in 12 months. Shares of America Movil, of which Slim owns a $23 billion stake, were up 35% in a year. That massive hoard of scratch puts him ahead of Microsoft cofounder Bill Gates, who had held the title of world's richest 14 of the past 15 years.Gates, now worth $53 billion, is ranked second in the world. He is up $13 billion from a year ago as shares of Microsoft rose 50% in 12months. Gates' holdings in his personal investment vehicle Cascade also soared with the rest of the markets.Buffett's fortune jumped $10 billion to $47 billion on rising shares of Berkshire Hathaway. He ranks third.

The Oracle of Omaha shrewdly invested $5 billion in Goldman Sachs and $3 billion in General Electric amid the 2008 market collapse. He also recently acquired railroad giant Burlington Northern Santa Fe for $26 billion.In his annual shareholder letter Buffett wrote, We've put a lot of money to work during the chaos of the last two years. When it's raining gold, reach for a bucket, not a thimble.Many plutocrats did just that. Indeed, last year's wealth wasteland has become a billionaire bonanza. Most of the richest people on the planet have seen their fortunes soar in the past year.

This year the World's Billionaires have an average net worth of $3.5 billion, up $500million in 12 months. The world has 1,011 10-figure titans, up from 793 a year ago but still shy of the record 1,125 in 2008. Of those billionaires on last year's list, only 12% saw their fortunes decline. U.S. billionaires still dominate the ranks--but their grip is slipping. Americans account for 40% of the world's billionaires, down from 45% a year ago.The U.S. commands 38% of the collective $3.6 trillion net worth of the world's richest, down from 44% a year ago.Of the 97 new members of the list, only 16% are from the U.S. By contrast, Asia made big gains. The region added 104 moguls and now has just 14 fewer than Europe, thanks to several large public offerings and swelling stock markets.The new billionaires include American Isaac Perlmutter, who flipped Marvel Entertainment to Disney for $4 billion last December. The Spider-Man mogul netted nearly $900 million in cash and 20 million shares of Disney in the transaction.Also new to the ranking: 27 billionaires from China, including Li Shufu, whose automaker, Geely, announced plans to buy Swedish brand Volvo from Ford in December. The deal is expected to close in March 2010.Finland and Pakistan both welcomed their first billionaires.For the first time China (including Hong Kong) has the most billionaires outside the U.S. with 89. Russia has 62 billionaires, 28 of them returnees who had fallen off last year's list amid a meltdown in commodities. Total returnees to the list this year: 164.

Eleven countries have at least double the number of billionaires they had a year ago, including China, India, Turkey and South Korea.Thirty members of last year's list fell out of the billionaire's club. Moguls who couldn't make the cut: Iceland's Thor Bjorgolfsson, Russia's Boris Berezovsky and Saudi Arabia's Maan Al-Sanea.
Another 13 members of last year's list died. Among the deceased: real estate developer Melvin Simon and glass tycoon William Davidson.
