Peering behind the scanners and pat-downs

30 November 2010: Nearly everyone is talking about the TSA and the implementation of the enhanced security measures at airports, but few are talking about the most visible seminal event that served as the catalyst for the current DHS and TSA enhanced security procedures. Enter Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, born on 22 December 1986 in Lagos, Nigeria. Abdulmutallab was one of the 279 passengers aboard Northwest Airlines Flight 253, an Airbus 330 flying from Schiphol International Airport in Amsterdam, Netherlands to Detroit, Michigan on Christmas Day in 2009. He initially boarded a KLM flight in Lagos, Nigeria, before transferring to the Northwest Airlines flight in Amsterdam.The events involving Abdulmutallab have resulted in numerous wide reaching and controversial security changes enacted by the TSA and more broadly, by the Department of Homeland Security under the direction of DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano. These enhancements have the imprimatur of Barack Hussein Obama, who has not only continued the policies of the Bush national security policy, but has dramatically expanded it. What were once incremental violations of our Constitutional rights under the previous administration have been widened and deepened under the pretext of increasing the safety of and security of the American public.

At the direction of Napolitano and the Obama security team, such changes in the name of security are not only limited to air travel, but are to be expanded to include other communal areas such as courthouses and sports stadiums. In the final analysis, however, it is the actions of Abdulmutallab aboard flight 253 that may be looked upon as the watershed event that is behind the new security procedures being implemented and expanded today.Proponents of the purchase and deployment of the body scanners and enhanced pat-downs at airports and other locations use the Abdulmutallab incident as the reason that such intrusive screening procedures are necessary. They claim that we fortunately averted a catastrophic event last Christmas, and assert that these new procedures and equipment will be instrumental in stopping similar types of attacks. Those claims are not completely accurate, yet they continue to serve as the unquestioned and persistent platform being used to deter legitimate criticism.The beauty of it lies in its simplicity, and its ability to convince many reasonable people to forsake some of their rights and liberties in the name of safety and security. Those otherwise concerned with normal life events have little interest, time or even cause to question what is really taking place directly in front of them.Although it is an undisputed fact that there are Islamic terrorists who indeed exist and are intent on causing death and destruction to the West, there are many unanswered and troubling questions, inconsistencies and problems with the circumstances and events involving Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab and the actions within our own intelligence agencies in this and other matters.

To arrive at the truth behind the DHS actions that seem intent on criminalizing the activities and even the beliefs of patriotic Americans concerned for the preservation of our Constitutional rights, I believe that one logical starting point, particularly in this instance but not to the exclusion of others, would be to completely reexamine the Abdulmutallab affair.Based on my investigation to date, there are several issues that raise legitimate questions about what we have been told about this event as well as past events. There appears to be a common thread of inconsistency woven into the fabric of what we are to accept as the truth, which could explain the cause and effect relationship behind the politicization of terror.

The most blatant and commonly referenced controversy surrounding the alleged attempted bombing of flight 253 broadcast by the media has been the financial fortune made by former DHS Secretary Michael Chertoff, founder of the Chertoff Group, who has benefitted from the sale of the Rapiscan units to the federal government. Chertoff is not the only financial benefactor as I have previously pointed out in this article published on 14 November, nor does financial gain appear to be the sole factor in the deployment and use of the scanners.It goes much deeper. And the deeper the trail, the darker it gets, both metaphorically and in reality.

Indeed, there is something very odd and disconcerting when the layers of this incident are pulled back, court documents are examined, and witness accounts are considered. The official accounts of the activities of Abdulmutallab and others simply don’t add up, and within the course of my next few reports, I intend to show you that some of what we have been told is simply not true.I will expose the holes in the official accounts, and further expose the relationship between the Abdulmutallab affair and other seemingly unrelated instances that, to this point, have existed just under the radar of public trust.

WikiLeaks: A staged crime scene

1 December 2010: In the realm of criminal investigation, there are instances where a crime has been committed but the criminal, in an attempt to confuse investigators and redirect the investigation away from themselves or conceal their true intent, will alter the crime scene. That’s called staging, and is often indicated when investigators encounter details that initially appear baffling when viewed in the larger context of the crime scene.Based on my professional analysis of the available facts surrounding the WikiLeaks controversy, staging is exactly what has taken place.Over the weekend, WikiLeaks 39 year-old founder Julian Assange dumped about a quarter of a million classified State Department documents on the internet. This was reportedly accomplished through the efforts of 22-year-old Army Pfc. Bradley E. Manning. The most cursory investigation will find that Manning did not act alone, and that WikiLeaks, which first published restricted documents in 2006, has been under government surveillance, if not some level of control since then.

Given the chaos allegedly created by the document dump, including the reported threat to matters of national security and even the personal security of our operational assets, several indicators exist that point to the WikiLeaks data dump as being a staged event.Consider that while the WikiLeaks documents were being dumped, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, in a coordinated effort with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency were tasked with seizing over 80 websites for copyright infringement. If there was a genuine administrative concern over the publication of sensitive documents, it would hardly seem reasonable to direct intelligence assets in that manner.Since the government had knowledge of the document theft for several months, had time to investigate and identify digital fingerprints of those involved as well as the documents themselves, it is reasonable to question why no direct governmental action was taken when there was ample opportunity to do so.In criminal matters, it is also important to address motive. In this case, the question who benefits must be asked. After careful review of many of the released documents, it can be reasonably established that the primary beneficiaries of this exposure are the progressives, globalists and members of the power elite. The documents appear to assault our democratic process and ultimately, our national sovereignty.

When all of the factors behind the WikiLeaks data dump are analyzed, I suspect that it this event will serve as a catalyst for this administration to advance their known objectives to regulate the internet. With Cass Sunstein as the head of the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs , the organized chaos created by WikiLeaks will certainly provide the requisite fodder to control the type of information available through the internet.Amid the controversy involving the data dump, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is also accused of rape and has made it onto Interpol’s wanted list. Considering the obvious staging of the data damp, it is of little surprise to also learn that Assange is the current globalists’ version of six degrees of Kevin Bacon. In this case, it is many degrees fewer, and it’s not actor Kevin Bacon, but George Soros who serves as the trivia link. Soros linked attorney Mark Stephens, who does pro bono work for the Open Society Institute, appears to be representing Assange as he remains in hiding in the UK.Indeed, a thorough forensic analysis of the digital DNA of this leak is in order.

Deadly Israeli fire rages on despite global aid

HAIFA, Israel (Reuters) – Israel struggled to contain a huge and deadly forest fire that raged on for a third day on Saturday, despite the efforts of firefighting planes from half a dozen countries.The worst inferno in Israel's history has killed 41 people, forced 17,000 to flee their homes and destroyed some 10,000 acres of woodland near the port of Haifa. By nightfall it had still not been brought under control.Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said two people suspected of starting the blaze through negligence had been arrested. Israel Radio said the suspects were 16-year-old boys from a village bordering on the Carmel region woodlands where the fire was focused.Regional police commander Roni Atiya said he believed the blaze had spread from a campfire that was not properly extinguished.It looks as though this is the result of negligence, said Atiya, adding there was no evidence of any link to terrorism.Foreign firefighting planes joined the battle to contain the blaze after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appealed for help because of a shortage of such aircraft in Israel.Planes and helicopters from the United States, Spain, Azerbaijan and Switzerland were expected to join those from Russia, Turkey, Greece, Britain, France and Cyprus, already dumping water on the flames.

NATIONS RUSHING IN SUPPLIES

Jordan, Egypt and Bulgaria were among other nations rushing in supplies such as flame retardant, fire trucks and crews, to help Israel cope with the conflagration.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas also offered to send help, in a rare telephone conversation with Netanyahu. The two were not believed to have spoken since U.S.-sponsored peace negotiations stalled in September.Abbas voiced condolences to Israel for those who died in the fire. Most were prison cadet trainees on their way to evacuate 500 inmates from a penitentiary.Netanyahu said he would establish a fleet of firefighter aircraft, which he told Abbas would be made available to Israel's Arab neighbors where necessary. Abbas also offered to send Israel several firetrucks, Israel said.The Israeli leader hit back at critics charging Israel was caught unprepared to handle the fire despite its technological savvy and smart weaponry.You cannot extinguish a mega-fire swiftly, Netanyahu told reporters after surveying a disaster scene on Saturday. He said the United States had also sought outside help to cope with natural disaster.We all get help from others. Colombia rains leave 174 dead, 1.5 million homeless

BOGOTA (AFP) – The toll from weeks of heavy rains across Colombia has risen to 174 people dead and over 1.5 million homeless, the Colombian Red Cross said Saturday.
Another 225 people have been injured and 19 were missing, Colombian Red Cross deputy director of operations Cesar Uruena told reporters. A total of 1,821 homes have been damaged or destroyed.We've never had this many people affected by the rainy season, he added, noting that the punishing rains were hitting 95 percent of the country.Some regions, including southwestern Valle del Cauca department, saw more than 12 hours of non-stop rain.More than a dozen mudslides blocked roads from Valle's capital Cali to the Pacific port town of Buenaventura, stranding hundreds of trucks and passenger vehicles.In Roldanillo, another town in Valle, 200 families were evacuated after the Cauca River overflowed and destroyed thousands of hectares (acres) of crops.A major canal ruptured in the northern department of Atlantico, flooding six villages and leaving at least 20,000 people homeless, officials said.

Faced with the dire situation, President Juan Manuel Santos hastened his return home from the Ibero-American summit in Mar del Plata in Argentina.Officials said Santos will travel directly to the port city of Baranquilla in Atlantico to meet with local authorities and help boost emergency measures for flood victims.In the central-western Andean department of Tolima, authorities opened the gates of the Prado dam and declared a red alert for some 10 villages affected by the flooding.Prado Mayor Jose Jael Florez urged the Tolima governor and relief agencies to ferry aid to those affected by the disaster, especially food, mattresses and canoes or boats.The storms were being blamed on atmospheric disturbances from La Nina, a phenomenon in which cooler-than-normal water circulates in the Pacific Ocean around the equator.

Villagers evacuated as Ecuador volcano erupts

QUITO, Ecuador – The Tungurahua volcano in Ecuador is billowing ash into the sky and sending super-hot pyroclastic flows surging down its slopes, causing authorities to evacuate nearby villages.

Hugo Yepez, director of Ecuador's Geophysical Institute, says no one has been injured nor any village damaged. He says people within 8 miles of the volanco's center were evacuated Saturday as a precaution.An eruption of ash from Tungurahua last May caused a one-day shutdown of the international airport at Ecuador's largest city, Guayaquil. Thousands of people in near the volcano also were evacuated.The volcano is 95 miles (150 kilometers) southeast of Quito, the capital. In 2006, an eruption buried entire villages and killed at least four people.

TEHRAN, Iran – Iran's intelligence minister accused the U.N. nuclear watchdog agency of sending spies in the guise of inspectors to collect information about Iran's nuclear activities, state TV reported Saturday.The claim was another sign that Iran has hardened its stance since the assassination a week ago of a prominent nuclear scientist and the wounding of another. Iran is to hold talks beginning Monday in Geneva with world powers trying to persuade it to curtail key elements of its nuclear work.Intelligence Minister Heidar Moslehi said that inspectors sent by the International Atomic Energy Agency had engaged in espionage and the Vienna-based agency must take responsibility for their actions. He did not elaborate or identify the inspectors Iran was accusing.Iran has increasingly alleged in recent months that the agency's inspectors have leaked information to U.S. officials and other allies. In June, Iran banned two U.N. nuclear inspectors from entering the country, claiming they had leaked false information about the country's disputed nuclear program.

Among the individuals the IAEA sends as so-called inspectors, there are spies from foreign intelligence services. The IAEA must be held responsible for this, state TV quoted Moslehi as saying.In Vienna, IAEA spokeswoman Gill Tudor said the agency had no comment on the spying allegations.The tough line by Tehran also appeared to spill over in the upcoming talks with the five permanent U.N. Security Council members — the U.S., Britain, France, Russia, China — plus Germany.Iran's top nuclear negotiator, Saeed Jalili, called the slaying of the nuclear scientist a disgrace for the Security Council, claiming the attacks were linked to efforts to implement international sanctions. He did not elaborate. Iran also has claimed the attacks were part of a Western covert campaign to sabotage its nuclear program.Standing before a photo of the slain nuclear scientist, Majid Shahriari, Jalili also predicted there will be no progress in Geneva until Iran's rights are respected — an apparent reference to its program to enrich uranium.Talks between Iran and the world powers broke down last year when Iran rebuffed a U.N.-drafted plan to ship abroad its stockpile of low-enriched uranium in exchange for reactor-ready fuel. Low-enriched uranium can be used in reactors, but also for warheads if brought to much higher enrichment levels.The U.S. and its allies suspect Iran's nuclear work is aimed at producing weapons. Iran says it only wants to enrich uranium to make fuel for power plants and not process it to the higher levels needed to make weapons.

The twin bombings last Monday in Tehran that killed Shahriari have threatened to complicate international efforts to open dialogue with Iran's leaders over their nuclear ambitions.According to Iran, the alleged campaign has included the abduction of Iranian scientists, the sale of faulty equipment and the planting of a destructive computer worm known as Stuxnet, which briefly brought Iran's uranium enrichment activity to a halt last month. Iran's chief suspect is archenemy Israel, whose Mossad spy agency has a long history of assassinating foes far beyond the country's borders.The intelligence chief Moslehi again accused Israel's Mossad, Britain's MI6 and the CIA of being behind the daring attacks.Asked about the Iranian accusations when they first surfaced earlier this month, Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev said Israel did not comment on such matters. In Washington, U.S. State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said, We decry acts of terrorism, wherever they occur. And beyond that, we do not have any information on what happened.Iran has also expressed its displeasure with IAEA chief Yukiya Amano's report, issued this week, on its nuclear program. The report said Iran had fewer centrifuges functioning than previously believed, suggesting its uranium enrichment program was not progressing as fast as Iran hoped.Tehran says the IAEA should just inspect the nuclear facilities and not release details like how much uranium or how many centrifuges it has.Iran's foreign minister, Manouchehr Mottaki, meanwhile, repeated Iran's position that it will seek to broaden the Geneva talks to include Tehran's views on world affairs. He gave no specifics on the Iranian agenda,but among Iran's key efforts is to open an international debate over Israel's undeclared but widely suspected nuclear arsenal.We will focus on dialogue. Our agenda will be presented at the meeting,he said Saturday at a security conference in Bahrain, a day after U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton addressed the same gathering.

Clinton noted Iran's right to pursue a peaceful nuclear program, but challenged the Islamic Republic to prove to the world that it does not seek atomic weapons. Israel saddened as Brazil recognises Palestinian state

JERUSALEM (AFP) – Israel on Saturday said it was disappointed by Brazil's decision to recognise a Palestinian state within the 1967 borders, saying it flew in the face of efforts to negotiate a peace deal.The decision was announced by outgoing Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in a public letter addressed to Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas, which was made public by Brazil's foreign ministry on Friday.The government of Israel expresses sadness and disappointment over the decision by the Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva a month before he steps down, a statement from the Israeli foreign ministry said.Recognition of a Palestinian state is a breach of the interim agreement which was signed between Israel and the Palestinian Authority in 1995 which said that the issue of the status of the West Bank and Gaza Strip would be discussed and resolved through negotiations, it said.Such a move also contravened the 2003 Middle East roadmap for peace, which said a Palestinian state could only be established through negotiations and not through unilateral actions, the statement said, warning that unilateral steps would harm attempts to build trust.

VIENNA – The 35-nation board of the International Atomic Energy Agency approved an IAEA-run repository for nuclear fuel on Friday, in a move meant to limit proliferation by making domestic uranium enrichment programs superfluous.The new fuel bank, and one run by Russia that went into operation earlier this year, are meant to provide alternatives to nations wanting to develop their own enrichment program to produce fuel for civilian nuclear reactors. Kazakhstan is the most likely candidate, but the location of the new facility has not yet been formally decided.

Because enrichment can also make fissile warhead material, the fuel banks are considered a way to reduce possible nuclear weapons proliferation by making domestic programs superfluous.Iran is under four sets of U.N. Security Council sanctions for refusing to scrap its enrichment activities.Nations have a right to enrich domestically and Iran insists it is doing so only to make fuel for an envisaged network of reactors. But international concerns are strong because Tehran developed its enrichment program clandestinely and because it refuses to cooperate with an IAEA probe meant to follow up on suspicions that it experimented with components of a nuclear weapons program — something Iran denies.Both facilities are meant to ensure a reliable supply of nuclear fuel in case commercial deliveries are interrupted and both were approved by the IAEA board. They are using religion to get the support of ordinary people, said Emad Gad, of the Al-Ahram Centre for Political and Strategic Studies.We are living under a fanatic bureaucratic system. If you want to build a mosque you can get permission in no time.Egypt votes on Sunday in the run-off to a general election that tightened the ruling party's grip on power, after the Muslim Brotherhood was wiped out in last Sunday's first round which was marred by accusations of widespread fraud.Some fear a growing Islamist threat from within President Hosni Mubarak's National Democratic Party.On Friday, a Coptic opposition candidate running for the secular Wafd party accused the NDP of fraudulently claiming her seat shortly after she had been declared the winner, and blamed extremist Islamic elements inside the party.For sure this was due to an anti-Coptic faction within the NDP... a Wahhabi Salafist current, said Mona Makram Ebeid of a strict version of Islam practised in Saudi Arabia.

Sectarian tensions have been rising in Egypt after Muslims set fire to homes owned by the family of a Christian man rumoured to have flirted with a Muslim girl last month and amid threats against Copts by Al-Qaeda in Iraq.Days before last Sunday's first round, bloody clashes erupted in Cairo's Talibiya district between Coptic protesters and police over the refusal of local authorities to allow them to turn a community centre into a church.Coptic Christians comprise up to 10 percent of Egypt's 80-million predominantly Muslim population, and have been the target of sectarian attacks in the past. Clashes between Christians and police are rare, however.Two demonstrators were killed and dozens wounded, while more than 160 were arrested, including youths as young as nine.Muslim residents of the area chanted anti-Coptic slogans during the clashes and also hurled rocks at the demonstrators.

Nagib Gibrail, a Coptic activist and human rights lawyer, said he was saddened and disappointed by the government's very aggressive response to the Talibiya protests.
They used real bullets and with these bullets they killed two people.The NDP have been promising that they will change things for 15 years. They repeat those promises before the elections take place. They promised, for example, that they would change the law governing the right to build churches, and this never happened,Gibrail added.

But he also argues that the Islamisation of society does not come from the government, as demonstrated by its severe crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood in the run-up to the legislative election.I think it is an expression of a trend that affects many Muslim countries... It is a threat not just to the Copts but also to people who do not agree with the ideas of the Islamists, Sayyed told AFP.But others fear the Mubarak government has allowed this trend to pervade the nation.

Discrimination against the Copts is systematic and comprehensive in Egypt. Let us look in Evil Santa’s bag of tricks.The Biggest item the progressives and Republicans are arguing about that needs fixing immediately since it was left by the Democrats, is the Bush tax cuts. The big and boring spin from the President and leftists is that they would support putting back the tax breaks for those making less than $250,000 a year but not for those, small business owners and all, who make more than that. Business owners and anyone daring to make over $250,000 a year can pay more and take the punishment. They simply deserve it for daring to achieve, for daring to create jobs and take the risks. The left simply thinks it is beyond selfish to actually be rewarded for your achievement, sacrifice and risk taking. Instead, all who make money and supply jobs should joyfully stand in a line to redistribute any money they earned or wealth they achieved. Where is that Christmas spirit you evil achievers?

What we really need in this country is to gut the IRS and have real CHANGE and reform with taxation. The only fair thing in my book is to have a national sales tax on everything and no other tax at all. Yes, give an exemption to our seniors regarding food and medicine. This would force all tax evaders, high rollers and illegal aliens to pay their fair share at the point of purchase. People could actually keep their income earned and buy things……hark, healing up the economy. Instead, what we have is an Un-American, anti Capitalist regime in the White House who believes that big Government should control and mandate everything, including our paychecks. They must have control over our checks and assets because of their heartfelt commitment to redistribution and communism.

Other Lame Brain pushes

The progressives are also pushing to get Don’t ask, don’t tell repealed with the defense authorization bill. This is the gay and leftist mantra and celebrity cause. The only problem is that the vast majority of our military including the vast majority of our high up military leaders don’t want a change. Things have been going just fine the way they are for years. In fact, it is safer and better for Gays to keep their sexuality private in our military. Our armed forces were never meant to be a battlefield for political agendas. We are a nation at war fighting real and vicious Islamic radicals. We are not in an overseas contingency operation. We don’t need coming out parties, guys declaring crushes on other guys, and stare downs in the shower. Gays aren’t persecuted in our military now. They are just told to put their sexuality back in their private bedroom where it belongs and shut up about it. This makes total sense to me and more importantly most of our military. But no, the progressives are trying in the Lame Brain session to cram this through. We are all homophobic for seeing the real value in don’t ask don’t tell. Oh well, I’m also Islam phobic, berther, domestic terrorist and the antichrist.

1.Punish and control the American people
2.Steal money from the American people
3.Insult the Judeo-Christian values of the American people
4.Steal more freedoms from the American people
In January, the wrecking ball comes to congress, followed by the fumigation truck. The battles, smears, disinformation and insults will only grow as we march toward 2012.

The Senate just passed S510 The Food Safety Modernization Act, which will give ‘King Kong’ like powers to the FDA to dictate how farmers grow everything, where they grow it, when they grow it and what is added to it or not. Thank God, this latest over reach from hell from the Obama administration and progressive left goes now to the House. Pray we can crush it there or the new House coming in January will have another one of many shredding tasks as this progressive ship of fools and Un American President try to steal, rob and destroy America…..now, starve her.The shameful Senators who voted for this have managed, if passed in the House to put a rope around the necks of the 2.2 million farms in America….hark, our very food supply. Farmers would now have numerous unannounced inspections, increased 7 times in just the next 7 years, while buried in mountains of paperwork and forms to fill out. They would experience psychotic regulations dictating how the farmers grow all kinds of food, what to do with their soil and when, hygiene, packing, even dictating when and where animals can go into their fields.The FDA and this administration are as usual hiding behind contrived made up crisis regarding our food supply and safety. What is the big emergency and need to ad billions more debt and more authority to the FDA? There is none! Food-borne illnesses have always happened.Our technology and advances in food safety have and continue to lead in the world. Food providers and farmers already pasteurize, disinfect, clean and take all kinds of steps to protect our food supply. By making Farming and the Food industry more expensive, regulated and paperwork heavy it does only one thing, bankrupts America’s farmers and food supply! It has nothing to do with real safety. It has only to do with stealing from, starving and controlling the American people even more.

Here are just a few points contained in this bill, thankfully provided by Health Freedom USA. www.healthfreedomusa.org. Just think about what is in this bill and then go throw up as I have.

1.It puts all US food and all US farms under Homeland Security and the Department of Defense, in the event of contamination or an ill-defined emergency. It resembles the Kissinger Plan.
2.It would end US sovereignty over its own food supply by insisting on compliance with the WTO, thus threatening national security.
3.It would allow the government, under Maritime Law, to define the introduction of any food into commerce (even direct sales between individuals) as smuggling into the United States.
4.It imposes Codex Alimentarious on the US. A global system of control over food. It allows the United Nations, World Health Organization and Agriculture Organization to take control of every food on earth and remove access to natural food supplements.
5.It would remove the right to clean, store and thus own seed in the US, putting control of seeds in the hands of Monsanto and other multinationals, threatening US security.
6.It includes NAIS, an animal tractability program that threatens all small farmers and ranchers raising animals. The UN is participating through the WHO, FAO, WTO, and World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) in allowing mass slaughter of even heritage breeds of animals and without proof of disease.
7.It extends a failed and destructive HACCP to all food, thus threatening to do to all local food production and farming what HACCP did to meat production – put it in corporate hands and worsens food safety.
8.It deconstructs what is left of the American economy. It takes agriculture and food, which are the cornerstone of all economics, out of the hands of the citizenry and puts them in total control of multinational corporations.
9.It would allow the government to mandate antibiotics, hormones, slaughterhouse waste, pesticides and GMOs.
10.It uses food crimes as the entry into police state power and control. The bill postpones defining all the regulations to be imposed; postponed defining crimes to be punished, postpones defining penalties to be applied. It removes fundamental constitutional protections from all citizens in the country, making them subject to a corporate tribunal with unlimited power and penalties, and without judicial review.
Just as the ‘kabuki theatre TSA’ has nothing to do with real airline security, S510 Food safety bill has nothing to do with protecting the American people and food safety. This is simply one of many attacks on our freedoms, Health care, False Airport security, Stimulus bills that only pay big dog sell outs and now a full court press to take over and gut our food supply. Saul Alynsky and Barack Obama Senior would be proud!

U.S. Government: Outreach or complicity with terrorists? By Douglas J. Hagmann

3 December 2010: There are some deeply troubling aspects pertaining to the U.S. government’s approach to the war against terror that need to be fully addressed and investigated. It has often been considered unpopular and unpatriotic to question the official accounts of various aspects of 9/11 and the government’s handling of issues related to that event. Based on an honest assessment of investigative reports, recent revelations and current government sanctioned activities, however, it would be unpatriotic not to do so.Consider that the primary reason given by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security that all air passengers must be subjected to a full body scan or an enhanced pat-down stems from the actions of Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the 2009 Christmas Day underwear bomber and threats related to his modus operandi. Beyond the obvious irregularities surrounding that event (and the subject of a future report), the inspiration, facilitator and instructor of that failed attack has been publicly identified as Anwar al Awlaki (a/k/a Anwar Nasser Abdulla Aulaqi). Al Awlaki is currently at large and being sought by our intelligence agencies.It was first reported by Fox News correspondent Catherine Herridge that Al Awlaki was a guest at a luncheon held at the Pentagon just months following the 9/11 attacks as part of an official government outreach program. Despite being vetted, Al Awlaki had a long criminal history stemming back at least a decade-and-a-half before 9/11. According to investigative reports, Al Awlaki was interviewed by the FBI on 17 September 2001 due to his relationship to three of the hijackers, although was inexplicably released.Following that luncheon, he was identified as the inspiration behind Fort Hood killer Nidal Malik Hassan, the guidance counselor to the thwarted Times Square bomber, two alleged would-be New Jersey Muslim terrorists arrested in June, and the now infamous attempted Christmas Day airline bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab.

Despite the vast amount of information contained in the FBI, CIA and Pentagon files that have existed about Anwar al Awlaki for at least two decades, references within the 9/11 Commission Report are often overlooked. The 9/11 Commission Report, formally named the Final Report of the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States, was the product of an investigation that began on 22 November 2002 and lasted through the summer of 2004. The final report was published on 22 July 2004. The report noted that al Awlaki remained under suspicion by the Commission, but despite the money and resources at their disposal, they had been unable to locate him. One is forced to wonder how hard they tried, or if they tried at all.As reported in the UK Telegraph last month, Al Awlaki hardly kept a low profile. It was revealed that al Awlaki spent a great deal of time on a speaking circuit in the UK, radicalizing Muslims in a series of lectures and sermons at about the same time he was being sought by the Commission investigators. According to documented sources, Al Awlaki arrived in Great Britain in early 2002, at which time he began his speaking tour at various mosques and Islamic centers. He remained in the UK through the end of 2003 or early 2004, although the exact dates of his arrival and subsequent departure appear to vary depending on which intelligence source is queried. According to published accounts, however, al Awlaki was physically present and delivered a sermon at the East London Mosque as late as 26 December 2003. His appearance at this location was no secret, so the assertions by the 9/11 Commission that they simply could not locate al Awlaki are either untrue or indicative of the shameful ineptitude of the Commission. Regardless of the reason, many innocent people are dead because of Al Awlaki.

Al Awlaki’s presence at the ELM did not end in 2003. On 1 January 2009, he delivered a lecture by video conference to its membership, preaching jihad against non-Muslims and inciting terrorism in general.The is little dispute that Anwar al Awlaki made the East London Mosque (ELM) and Islamic center his home base while in the UK. The East London Mosque is also home to the Islamic Forum of Europe, a Muslim organization that was exposed by a six-month undercover investigation by the UK’s Telegraph and Channel 4 for their ties to the Taliban, terrorists related to the 1993 WTC bombing, and numerous other extremists.It is evident that the East London Mosque and Islamic Center has obvious ties to Islamic terrorists and hosted al Awlaki, either personally or virtually, through 2009.In consideration of the above, any patriotic American or anyone with reasonable sensibilities would have to question the latest U.S. government outreach program hatched under the Obama administration. Incredibly, the focus of the U.S. outreach program in the UK was the East London Mosque.Last Monday, the U.S. Ambassador to the Great Britain, Louis B. Susman, visited the East London Mosque (ELM) at the direction of the U.S. State Department. During his visit, Ambassador Susman expressed his great admiration of the mosque, its leadership and its members. Additionally, he extended an invitation to Muslim youth from the mosque to enroll in the U.S. embassy’s cultural and interfaith program, which coordinates trips for young Muslims to the United States. This U.S. embassy-funded initiative is being paid for with U.S. tax dollars.

The outreach by Ambassador Susman was part of President Barack Hussein Obama’s call for a renewed dialogue with Muslim communities around the world that is being spearheaded by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. What the ambassador and the U.S. State Department declined to address are the direct and unquestionable connections between the East London Mosque and terrorists.The current actions of this administration combined with the historical decisions of the former administration begs the question: is it ignorance or complicity? In either case, it is inexcusable, and a full investigation must be launched that encompasses all aspects of our government’s involvement with terrorists and terror events from 9/11 to the present. Anything less would be an affront to those who have died on American soil or on behalf of our country.

Police State episode of hit Ventura show covering FEMA camps pulled from air

While many Americans think they can skip being sexually molested at the hands of the TSA by avoiding airports, Big Sis has been quietly preparing the groundwork for the total takeover of all public transport and highways by federal government goon squads.Local police, TSA and Homeland Security agents are already implementing airport-style security measures at bus and train stations, including earlier this year in Tampa, where bomb-sniffing dogs and grope downs were used to check passengers.As we reported earlier this year, as the national outrage surrounding the TSA’s use of naked body scanners at airports simmered, the feds had already purchased hundreds of x-ray scanners mounted in vans that were being used to randomly scan vehicles, passengers and homes in complete violation of the 4th amendment and with wanton disregard for any health consequences.In addition, as was announced way back in 2005, VIPR teams now patrol Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor and Los Angeles rail lines; ferries in Washington state; bus stations in Houston; and mass transit systems in Atlanta, Philadelphia, Washington and Baltimore, expanding their work beyond airplanes, launching counterterror surveillance at train stations and other mass transit facilities.

Homeland Security is also implementing technology to be enforced at security events which purportedly reads malintent on behalf of an individual who passes through a checkpoint. The video below explains how Future Attribute Screening Technology (FAST) checkpoints will conduct physiological and behavioral tests in order to weed out suspected terrorists and criminals.The clip shows individuals who attend security events being led into trailers before they are interrogated as to whether they are terrorists while lie detector-style computer programs analyze their physiological responses. The subjects are asked about their whereabouts, and if they are attempting to smuggle bombs or recording devices into the expo, proving that the technology is intended to be used at public events and not just airports. Individuals who do not satisfy the first lie detector-style test are then asked additional questions.The implementation of Checkpoint USA, where citizens are routinely stopped, searched and radiated by federal VIPER teams is further evidence of how America is crumbling into a Soviet-style police state where the presumption of innocent until proven guilty is abolished and the 4th amendment eviscerated.With the devices already being used at highway checkpoints, DHS chief Janet Napolitano has now publicly outlined the plan for mobile scanners to be used on all forms of transit, from trains and the metro to boats.Apathetic Americans who think they can avoid the clutches of Big Sis by merely refusing to fly are going to be in for a rude awakening when they see DHS scanners rolling around their neighborhoods taking naked pictures of their children while firing them up with dangerous radiation, all in the name of safety and security.We have been warning for years that everything you saw unfolding in the airports would soon be heading for the streets.

Global banks tell EU to increase political co-ordination

EUOBERVER / BRUSSELS – As trouble surrounding the Greek economy escalated earlier this year, Britain's top banker warned the US that France and Germany will push for political union inside the eurozone currency club and that this could damage London's influence within the EU.The thoughts of Bank of England Governor Mervyn King were relayed to Washington by US Ambassador Louis Susman after the two men talked in February of this year, as revealed by a leaked cable from whistleblower site WikiLeaks.Germany and France will ultimately have no choice but to offer explicit guarantees of Greek debt, argued King, according to the cable.The eurozone could not risk a Greek default and euro devaluation would not be an acceptable political option for Germany or France. Germany and France will likely, as a condition of any guarantee, require the ability to scrutinize if not exercise some control over the Greek budget. Longer-term, the drive for greater political cohesion will accelerate.In May, Greece was handed a €110 billion EU-IMF bail-out.At the same time, the EU's statistics agency, Eurostat, was given greater powers to scrutinize member state economic data, and the subsequent setting up of a €750 billion eurozone rescue mechanism, only days later, further increased the determination of European leaders to better co-ordinate their economic policies.A decade after warnings about monetary union being unstable without a parallel political union to co-ordinate economic policies were ignored, EU leaders appear to be coming round to the idea.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has put forward plans for a European economic government, while European economy commissioner Olli Rehn has repeatedly said it is time to finally put the E in Economic and Monetary Union (EMU).Already in February, Mr King worried that this drive for eurozone consolidation could sideline Britain's influence inside the EU.The eurozone's move to greater political cohesion could poise some disadvantages for the UK, King speculated, reads the US ambassador's cable.As an example, the central banker apparently pointed to a meeting of EU finance ministers earlier in February, during which eurozone governments politely listened to chancellor [Alistair] Darling when he commented on the situation in Greece, but he was not invited to attend internal discussions since the UK is not part of the eurozone.Mr King went on to warn: It would be incumbent for the UK to demonstrate that it has something meaningful to say and to be constructively engaged in the EU, should this greater political cohesion among the eurozone governments occur.Separately, former French President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing has insisted that the eurozone is not in danger of breaking apart, arguing that it would be impossible for any state to leave and reclaim its former currency.It is impossible. Imagine a country decides to return to a national currency. Its citizens do not want. What could they do well with a currency devalued by 40 percent? EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - Relations with the US and China, climate change, poverty eradication, crisis management and counter-terrorism are to be the top priorities of the EU's new diplomatic corps, EU foreign relations chief Catherine Ashton told her stable of 136 ambassadors at a behind-closed-doors meeting in Brussels on Wednesday (1 December).The speech, given at a regular annual gathering of EU envoys in the European Commission headquarters, doubled up as a low-key launch ceremony for the European External Action Service (EEAS), which formally began life the same day.A source familiar with the discussions at the event told EUobsever: She surprised everyone with a very touching presentation about her personal journey over the past 10 months. She spoke without notes and she showed pictures of herself embracing a child in Haiti, of rural poverty in China.She went straight to the key issues: How we can ensure that the EU 28 [the 27 member states and the EEAS] can send out one message; the challenges we face from climate change; improving the relationship with the US, which is for her clearly the EU's most important relationship; then strategic partners, especially China, how important it is to try to shape one EU agenda on China.There was also a wake up call on resources - how we have to do more with less. That we live in extraordinary times and the EEAS cannot be a stranger to financial difficulties.

The contact said that there was no official mention of the WikiLeaks affair but that the issue did come up in the Ashton question-and-answer session: She noted that the cables show how the US is actually working in partnership with other countries, how they prove the conspiracy theorists wrong.Another source who was present at the event said: Gender balance came up. Given that it was a room dominated by men, they were happy that Cathy was starting to improve things in this area.The sessions, which began on Wednesday and will last until 5pm Brussels time on Friday, also saw speeches by European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, European Parliment head Jerzy Buzek and two of Ms Ashton's top managers - French EEAS secretary general Pierre Vimont and Irish EEAS administration chief David O'Sullivan. EU Council President Herman Van Rompuy is to speak on Friday, along with Ms Ashton's two deputy secretary generals, Helga Schmid and Maciej Popowski. Commissioners Kristalina Georgieva (aid), Karl de Gucht (trade) and Stefan Fuele (enlargement) are also in the line-up.It's a pity they did not invite the press. It's a humble launch for the EEAS, maybe too humble, an EU diplomat said.Mr Barroso' speech urged the ambassadors to be more assertive in co-shaping the global agenda. Mr Buzek stressed the importance of EU diplomats' democratic accountability and the value of EU parliament committee hearings for new EEAS appointees. In a related development, Ms Ashton's office on Thursday named 57-year-old Italian crisis management specialist Agostino Miozzo as her right-hand-man in charge of civilian and military crisis-response planning. The post reports directly to Ms Ashton and stands above the still-to-be-named head of the EU's intelligence-sharing bureau, the Joint Situation Centre.Dr Miozzi has since 2002 headed up the voluntary and international relations office in the Italian Civil Protection Department and impressed Ms Ashton when the two met in earthquake-struck Haiti earlier this year.Ms Ashton on Thursday also appointed British EU official Robert Cooper, a senior foreign policy advisor to her predecessor, Javier Solana, and a specialist on Iran and the Western Balkans, to be an EEAS counsellor.

ECB to continue bond purchases till spring 2011

The European Central Bank (ECB) has moved to ease market jitters over eurozone sovereign debt by announcing that the authority will continue to supply liquidity to troubled banks into the spring of next year.There had been concerns, as indicated by public pronouncements from ECB board members, that now was the time for banks to ween themselves off the central bank's liquidity teat.Many banks had feared that the ECB would slowly begin to phase out its liquidity scheme, officially called its Securities Market Programme.However, ECB chief Jean-Claude Trichet told reporters in Frankfurt on Thursday (3 December) that the body had decided to continue the practice until March, 2011.The SMP is ongoing. Speaking to members of the European Parliament's trade committee on Thursday (2 December), ambassador Song Zhe was also defending China's currency policy, while MEPs peppered him with their concerns regarding market access for European businesses.We hope our European friends will be prudent in using trade safeguarding measures, Mr Song told the gathering of euro-deputies, his first visit to the important committee since September 2009. In China we are very much worried by the antidumping measures in the EU.The ambassador, reportedly well connected to senior officials in Beijing, also challenged the notion that a stronger yuan would solve the world's trade imbalances. It is unfair for nations to put the blame for their unemployment on an undervalued renminbi, he said.Foreign companies in China, including many from Europe, make up 55 percent of China's foreign trade, he added. Too fast a renminbi appreciation will have a negative effect on their exports.The committee's chair, Portuguese Socialist MEP Vital Moreira, said China represented the single most important challenge for the EU's trade policy, recognition of the huge volume of goods that travel between the two sides each year but also the growing frustrations expressed by European firms.

Problems have heightened over the past 18 months, says Fredrik Erixon of the European Centre for International Political Economy, a Brussels-based think-tank that specialises in trade issues.China is trying to climb the added-value ladder by developing national champions, he adds. This can involve using discriminatory tactics to shut out foreign companies.The European Commission appears to agree that recent rules imposed by Beijing to support indigenous innovation unfairly restrict foreign access to Chinese government contracts, hugely lucrative following the $586 billion stimulus package launched in 2008.In response, a recent proposal from the EU executive on the bloc's future trade strategy calls for the creation of a reciprocity instrument, under which Chinese firms could be blocked from European government contracts as a retaliatory measure.A commission communication on raw materials, set to be published next month, also sets out to secure European access to raw materials across the globe following recent Chinese restrictions in this area.The Commission has identified a list of 14 critical raw materials at EU level, reads a current draft of the document, seen by EUobserver. However, the EU is fully reliant on imports, whereby China accounted for 97 percent of world production in 2009.That dependence has been increasingly felt over the past year as the Communist administration has moved to clamp down on exports of the valued minerals. As a result, the commission paper proposes that Europe greatly increase its infrastructural investment in mineral-rich areas of the world such as Africa in a bid to secure supply.As such, the proposal appears to follow in China's footsteps, with Beijing already one of the largest investors in the region.

Help Arrives from Europe, Turkey, U.S.; Planes Take to the Skies

Help arrived on Friday morning for Israeli firefighters trying to put out a massive blaze in the north. Their efforts had been hampered by the lack of firefighting planes; now several planes have arrived and have begun assisting the in firefighting effort.The first planes to arrive came from Bulgaria, which sent 100 firefighters as well, and from Greece, a country which has traditionally had little to do with Israel but which has recently established warmer ties and has recent experience with large fires.Help also arrived from Turkey, despite increasingly hostile relations between Turkey and Israel. Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu thanked Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who sent two planes.Later in the morning helicopters came from Britain and Cyprus, and firefighting trucks arrived from Jordan. Israeli firefighting commanders expressed hope that with the foreign assistance, the fire will be put out by Friday afternoon.The planes are already in action, and have drawn seawater to extinguish the flames. A massive Russian firefighting plane is expected to arrive in the afternoon.Netanyahu said Israel had received offers of help from many other countries as well, among them Egypt, Azerbaijan, Spain, Croatia, and France.

United States President Barack Obama offered his condolences Thursday to the families of those killed in the fire, and said the U.S. would assist Israel in responding to the blaze. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg initiated an aid operation already, sending a plane carrying firefighting chemicals, the supplies of which are critically low in Israel.Wind and unusually dry weather led to conditions in which the fire spread rapidly, moving up to one mile in five minutes. PA Removes Study Denying Jewish Claim to Western Wall

The Palestinian Authority has backpedaled on its claim that one of Judaism’s holiest sites has no connection to the ancient history of the Jews.A study posted on the official PA Ministry of Information website that claimed the Western Wall (the Kotel) is actually a Muslim holy site named the Al-Buraq Wall has mysteriously disappeared from the page.The so-called study, posted at the beginning of this week by the PA Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Information D. Mutawakkil Taha, claimed that Jews did not worship at the Wailing Wall at any time until the Balfour Declaration of 1917.Taha, a well-known writer and poet, claimed the Wall is held under the sovereignty of the Waqf (Islamic Religious Trust) and is owned by an Islamic Algerian Moroccan family. The al-Buraq Wall is in fact the western wall of the Aqsa Mosque, he wrote. This wall was never part of the so-called Temple Mount, but Muslim tolerance allowed the Jews to stand in front of it and weep over its destruction.The Western Wall is part of the original wall surrounding the Temple compound on the Temple Mount on which the First and Second Holy Temples stood. The wall is the only original remnant of the Temple compound that was still visible before modern archaeological digs uncovered other remains. This is why Jews have been mourning the Temple at the Western Wall for centuries. The site is also known as the Wailing Wall because Jews to this day go there to pray and pour their hearts out, sometimes weeping as they mourn the loss of the Holy Temple.

An Arabic-language statement issued by the PA government hinted that the page had been removed by hackers. According to the statement, the website had been penetrated by unknown perpetrators. Nevertheless, said the PA Ministry of Information, it was determined to show the truth and [continue] to show all that is happening in Palestine to the world. However, the site appeared to be functioning perfectly when Israel National News attempted to access the home page and several other areas on the site.Media reports quoted a senior PA official in Ramallah who revealed the U.S. had asked the government of Mahmoud Abbas to remove the report, which was gone by Wednesday.Earlier this week, State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley told reporters the U.S. strongly condemns these comments and fully rejects them as factually incorrect, insensitive and highly provocative... We have repeatedly raised with the Palestinian Authority leadership the need to consistently combat all forms of delegitimization of Israel, including denying historic Jewish connections to the land.The office of Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu meanwhile has acknowledged the PA’s compliance with the U.S. demand to remove the offensive document, but said it was not enough.It is important for confidence-building that the Palestinian Authority publicly prepare its people for peace and reconciliation, and that can only be accomplished if Palestinian leaders will publicly disassociate themselves from such remarks, and condemn all statements calling Israel fundamentally illegitimate, the PMO said in a statement. “As long as the Jewish States continues to remain illegitimate in Palestinian eyes, there will be no real peace.Various American Jewish organizations weighed in with strong statements of support for the U.S. government’s prompt response to the PA attempt to delegitimize the Jewish claim to the Western Wall.

Maintaining historical accuracy and integrity is critical, and the Western Wall’s origin as the outer wall of the Jewish Second Temple is irrefutable, noted American Jewish Committee Executive Director David Harris.Rabbi Shmuel Rabinovich, who serves as rabbi of the Western Wall, commented in a statement Wednesday that the PA’s attempt to again rewrite the sanctities of Israel damaged not only the speakers’ reliability and the dignity of history, but primarily the efforts to bring peace to the Middle East.

Long History of PA Attempts to Rewrite History
The PA attempt to claim of Muslim ownership of the Western Wall actually goes back as far as 2005, when the claim first appeared on the Ramallah government’s Religious Affairs site.The PA has dedicated much effort to rewriting history and denying the Jewish connection to the Wall, which is located in Jerusalem -- a city which served as the Jewish capital for 1,600 years before Islam’s founder, Mohammed, authored the Koran.In 2009, Al Quds Open University lecturer Shamekh Alawneh also said in a televised lecture that Jews invented their connection to the Wall for political purposes. He insisted the Jewish claim to the Western Wall has no historical roots in a TV program broadcast on PA TV called Jerusalem – History and Culture.According to Muslim tradition, the founder of Islam, Mohammed rose to heaven from the Temple Mount although the event is not mentioned in the Islamic primary holy text, the Koran. Federal Reserve May Be Central Bank of the World After UBS, Barclays Aid

UBS was the biggest borrower under the Commercial Paper Funding Facility, with $74.5 billion overall, more than twice as much as Citigroup Inc., the top U.S. bank recipient, according to the data released yesterday. London-based Barclays Plc took the biggest single amount under another program that made overnight loans, when it got $47.9 billion on Sept. 18, 2008. We’re talking about huge sums of money going to bail out large foreign banks, said Senator Bernard Sanders, the Vermont independent who wrote the provision in the Dodd-Frank Act that required the Fed disclosures. Has the Federal Reserve become the central bank of the world? I think that is a question that needs to be examined.The first detailed accounting of U.S. efforts to spare European banks may add to scrutiny of the central bank, already at its most intense in three decades. The Fed, which released data on 21,000 transactions, said in a statement that its 11 emergency programs helped stabilize markets and support economic recovery. The Fed said there have been no credit losses on rescue programs that have been closed. The growth of the U.S. mortgage-backed securities market and the dollar’s status as the world’s reserve currency enticed overseas banks such as Zurich-based UBS to buy assets in the country before 2008. They paid for the holdings with U.S. dollars, and when funding seized up, the Federal Reserve refused to take the risk that European firms would unload the assets and further depress markets for housing-related investments.

Much Worse

Things would have been worse if they hadn’t lent to foreigners, said Perry Mehrling, senior fellow at the Morin Center for Banking and Financial Law at Boston University and author of The New Lombard Street: How the Fed became the Dealer of Last Resort.We’re finally getting to understand the role of the Fed in the world.Fed spreadsheets showed the central bank became the world’s lender of last resort as dollars flowed to European banks as well as Bank of America Corp. and Wells Fargo & Co., among top borrowers from the Term Auction Facility at $45 billion each. Goldman Sachs Group Inc., which posted record profit last year, borrowed more than $24 billion from another program. Milwaukee-based Harley-Davidson Inc. and Fairfield, Connecticut- based General Electric Co. sold commercial paper, a form of short-term debt, to the Fed under a program that lent as much as $348.2 billion at its peak.
Sanders, the Vermont senator, said yesterday he plans to investigate whether banks profited by borrowing from the Fed and investing the funds in Treasuries, benefiting from the difference in interest rates.

Bailout Protection Act

U.S. Representative Mike Pence, an Indiana Republican, said he planned to introduce a European Bailout Protection Act to restrict the flow of International Monetary Fund loans to European countries. He said he was responding to reports that U.S. officials might bolster a European fund designed to deal with this year’s debt crisis, which has spread from Greece to Ireland.Edwin Truman, a former Fed official who is a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics in Washington, said any push to confine the Fed’s role to U.S. banks would create a massive exercise in financial protectionism.It would lead to retaliation, so U.S. banks in London or Tokyo would expect the same kind of treatment, Truman said. William Poole, senior economic adviser to Merk Investments LLC and a former Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis president, said he was surprised by the extent of non-U.S. bank borrowing.

Commercial Paper

I was under the impression that each country bore the responsibility for supervising the banks headquartered in their borders,Poole said in an interview.The $74.5 billion received by UBS through the CPFF, which bought short-term debt, represents total borrowings by UBS over the life of the program. The total outstanding at any point in time never exceeded about half that sum, said Karina Byrne, a UBS spokeswoman.Byrne said the bank’s tapping the Fed fund should be seen in the context of our overall desire to maintain flexibility and diversification in our funding sources.The loan to a Barclays unit came from the Primary Dealer Credit Facility, created to make sure U.S. securities firms and foreign firms’ U.S. affiliates had cash to satisfy clients’ financing demands.Barclays took the loan the week in September 2008 that it acquired the U.S. operations of Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. Mark Lane, a spokesman for Barclays, declined to comment.

A Big Operation

Paris-based Natixis borrowed $27 billion under the commercial paper program. We’ve got a big operation in the U.S.A., Victoria Eideliman, a spokeswoman for the bank said. It was, for us, natural that we participate in this program like all the banks. When we participated, the liquidity situation was very tense.The $182.3 billion rescue of American International Group Inc. spared European banks that traded with the New York-based insurer from having to raise as much as $16 billion in capital, according to a June report from the Congressional Oversight Panel, which reviews bailout spending.Fed Chairman Ben S. Bernanke addressed questions in a 2009 Congressional hearing about why non-U.S. banks benefited from the AIG rescue.

The Obligation

I would point out that the Europeans have also saved a number of major financial institutions, and the issue of whether those institutions owed American companies money has not come up, Bernanke said. So I think that there is a sense that we all have the obligation to address the problems of companies in our own jurisdictions.
Three of the top seven borrowers under the CPFF program were private firms. New York-based Hudson Castle received $53.3 billion in aggregate, BSN Holdings took $42.8 billion, and Liberty Hampshire Co., a unit of Guggenheim Partners LLC, drew $41.4 billion, Fed data show.Hudson’s website says it develops customized debt products. A person who answered its phone said no one was available to comment. A Guggenheim spokesman didn’t return phone calls.BSN Capital Partners Ltd., which was associated with BSN Holdings according to a 2006 Standard & Poor’s note, was founded by John Burgess, a former Deutsche Bank AG managing director. Burgess declined to comment.

WARSAW/LONDON (Reuters) – Twelve people froze to death in Poland overnight and air, rail and road traffic across Northern Europe remained badly disrupted by snow and ice on Friday.In Germany, a record-breaking cold snap and heavy snow this week was expected to hit growth slightly, the second time low temperatures have affected growth this year.A lot of construction projects have been halted, a lot of business trips have been postponed and freight transport has become quite difficult, Volker Treier, chief economist of the chamber of industry and commerce (DIHK), told Reuters.

Britain's second busiest airport, Gatwick, reopened but an airport official said flights would be severely disrupted. The Eurostar train service linking Britain to France and Belgium said delays and cancellations would continue until Sunday.Every winter in Poland dozens of people die in the snow, mostly homeless or drunk. The latest figure from the Interior Ministry brought the total killed in the past three days to 30.Severe frost also left some 150,000 people in the southern Polish city of Czestochowa without heating early on Friday.In Britain, train passengers have been stuck on freezing trains, schools in some areas have closed, cars have crashed on icy roads and traffic has inched along snow-clogged motorways.The disruptions have prompted widespread criticism of the country's ability to handle bad weather, and the transport minister has ordered a review of how the system has responded.The icy weather is estimated to have cost the economy some 1.2 billion pounds ($1.9 billion) a day, with commuters struggling to get to work and the pre-Christmas trading period hit by delivery delays.Germany's Trier noted that harsh winter conditions at the start of 2010 had shaved about a half a percentage point off growth in the first quarter.But even if the snow and cold weather cost a few 10ths of a percentage point (from growth), it won't change the fact that 2010 will be an excellent year, Treier said.The government expects the economy to grow by 3.4 percent this year after contracting 4.7 percent in 2009.

Heavy snow strands motorists in northeast US

NEW YORK (AFP) – A snowstorm blanketed the northeastern United States on Thursday, shutting down an interstate highway near Buffalo, New York and leaving motorists stranded for more than 12 hours.Some drivers spent the night in their cars and trucks as long lines of vehicles filled Interstate 90.Up to two feet (61 centimeters) of snow fell in some areas in just 24 hours, according to local reports.

The band of rough weather was expected to continue to affect the area through late Thursday before heading south, said the National Weather Service, which issued lake-effect snow warnings for areas on the eastern ends of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.
Lake-effect snow showers typically align themselves in bands and will likely be intense enough to drop one (2.5 centimeters) to several inches of snow per hour for several hours, it added.Visibilities vary greatly and can drop to zero within minutes. Travel is strongly discouraged. Commerce could be severely impacted.

CARACAS, Venezuela – President Hugo Chavez says more than 30 people have been killed in floods and landslides in Venezuela, and he is pledging to speed construction of public housing to help thousands of evacuees.Speaking to evacuees on Thursday, Chavez said they would receive homes and vowed to accelerate construction of public housing projects in the Caracas area.Chavez said the government was assisting more than 15,000 families that fled homes amid torrential rains. He said the government has more than 300 disaster shelters open across the country.The heavy rains during the past month have continued well past the usual end of the wet season in Venezuela.

SEOUL, South Korea – South Korea's next defense chief threatened Friday that jets would bomb the North if it stages another attack like last week's deadly shelling as he outlined a tough new military policy toward the rival neighbor.President Lee Myung-bak's government is suffering intense criticism that its response to North Korea's Nov. 23 barrage on a South Korean island was weak, and over the stunning revelation that the South's spy chief dismissed information in August indicating the North might attack the front-line island of Yeonpyeong.Lee's nominee, Kim Kwan-jin, told a parliamentary confirmation hearing that further North Korean aggression will result in airstrikes. He said South Korea will use all its combat capabilities to retaliate.In case the enemy attacks our territory and people again, we will thoroughly retaliate to ensure that the enemy cannot provoke again, Kim said. The hearing is a formality as South Korea's National Assembly does not have the power to reject Lee's appointment.Kim said it will be difficult for North Korea to conduct a full-scale war because of its weak economy and concerns over a plan to transfer power from ailing leader Kim Jong Il to his young, untested son, Kim Jong Un.

Despite the bold declarations, questions have been raised about Lee's readiness — and even willingness — to stand up to the North. The president has been criticized for leading a military whose response to the attack was seen as too slow and too weak. The North fired 170 rounds, compared with 80 returned by South Korea.Satellite photos showed only about 10 South Korean rounds landed near North Korea's army barracks along the west coast, according to the office of lawmaker Kwon Young-se, who said he saw the images provided Thursday by the National Intelligence Service.
Despite the pressure, Lee must balance calls for a harsh response with the knowledge that Seoul — a city of more than 10 million people and the economic heart of the country — lies only 30 miles (50 kilometers) from the Koreas' heavily militarized border and within easy range of North Korean artillery.South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported Friday that North Korea has recently improved its ability to hit the capital: North Korea now has 5,200 rockets, about 100 more than it used to, the agency said, citing an unidentified South Korean military source. PARIS – The European Central Bank's chief says the euro remains a credible currency despite the debt crisis that has required the bailouts of Ireland and Greece and raised worries about the future of the shared currency.A day after the ECB extended its special support measures for banks, Jean-Claude Trichet on Friday urged European governments to make a quantum leap toward reforming and cleaning up budgets to avoid falling deeper into turmoil. Speaking in Paris, he said, This is no time for complacency.Trichet would not comment Friday on whether the ECB has increased its purchases of government bonds by highly indebted countries like Ireland or Portugal to ease their borrowing rates.Analysts and traders, however, speculate that the central bank has increased these purchases in recent days. Confirmation will arrive Monday, when the ECB publishes figures that will reveal how much it has bought in the past week, since Ireland's bailout failed to ease market worries.Trichet nevertheless insisted the 16-nation euro itself is not at risk.The euro is a credible currency. The euro is a currency that is considered just as credible for the next 10 years as for the last 12 years,he said.The currency was steady against the dollar Friday, buoyed by Trichet's pledge to extend crisis liquidity measures to banks and speculation the bond purchases are ongoing. The euro bought $1.3209 in morning European trading Friday, about the same as the night before in New York.

The ECB, the European Union and the 16 governments that share the euro are struggling to contain a crisis caused by too much state debt in some countries. They are trying to reassure bond investors that countries will not default and keep the interest rates on their debt loads from rising so high they can no longer afford to borrow.Governments are slashing spending and raising taxes to cut their deficits, but that has raised fears that austerity will slow growth and make debt even harder to pay.Asked whether European Union governments should increase their bailout funds, Trichet said, We are encouraging governments to go as far as possible to being commensurate with the challenges. MADRID (AP) — Spain's government was set to approve on Friday a fresh round of austerity and reform measures aimed at easing market fears the country will need a bailout to manage its debt, a possibility the finance minister ruled out.The new moves include plans to sell off a 30 percent stake in the government-owned national lottery, partial privatization of airports, the elimination of a key jobless benefit and tax cuts for small businesses.Spanish media reported that the administration of Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, who canceled a trip to an Iberoamerican summit in Argentina to see the reforms through, may also boost taxes on cigarettes during a final announcement detailing the measures Friday afternoon.Finance Minister Elena Salgado insisted in an interview with Britain's BBC Radio 4 that fears Spain, the eurozone's fourth largest economy, could need a bailout are overblown.We are doing all that we had committed to do, our fiscal adjustment is on track, Salgado said.We have done all the things that we have to do with our financial sector. It is in a strong restructuring process.The latest measures, first announced Wednesday by Zapatero, were welcomed by both markets and the European Union after weeks of speculation that first neighboring Portugal and then Spain would need financial help.

In May, when markets were spooked by the near-bankruptcy of Greece, Spain cut wages for civil servants, froze most retirement pensions, and made it easier and cheaper for companies to lay people off.Zapatero has also pledged to reform the pension system early in 2011, likely raising the retirement age from 65 to 67, an unpopular move that sparked a general strike in late September.In the latest measures, the government hopes to take in euro9 billion ($12 billion) by selling a 49 percent stake in Spain's airports in a deal that would also shift management of Madrid's Barajas and Barcelona's El Prat airports to the private sector.Selling the lottery stake would give Spain as much as euro5 billion. Meanwhile, some 40,000 small and medium-size companies are expected to benefit from the tax cut. The measures also include a reduction in costs and bureaucracy for people setting up new companies.A special subsidy of euro426 for people whose unemployment benefits have run out will be axed in February. The measure was introduced in 2009 as the crisis began to hit Spain.Zapatero's announcement helped ease jitters that hit markets in recent weeks and sent government borrowing costs soaring in both Spain and Portugal.The countries' borrowing costs continued to fall Friday, a day after the European Central Bank said it would keep helping the continent's banks and amid speculation it may also be quietly buying the bonds of debt-burdened eurozone countries to ease their borrowing costs.The yield on Portuguese 10-year bonds fell below 6 percent for the first time in three months on Friday, while Spanish yields slipped back below 5 percent after reaching 5.7 percent days earlier. Cholera rages in rural Haiti, overwhelming clinics By Ben Fox, Associated Press – Fri Dec 3, 5:48 am ET

LIMBE, Haiti – A gray-haired woman, her eyes sunken and unfocused from dehydration, stumbles up a dirt path slumped on the shoulder of a young man, heading to a rural clinic so overcrowded that plastic tarps have been strung up outside to shade dozens who can't fit inside.On the path to the clinic, another cholera victim lies dazed, her head bleeding because she couldn't stay atop the motorcycle taxi that carried her along the twisting country roads to the treatment center on the front line of Haiti's sudden battle with cholera.Nearby, a 16-month-old girl wails as a nurse prods her with a needle, trying to find a vein for the intravenous fluids she needs to save her life.Many feared Haiti's growing epidemic would overwhelm a capital teeming with more than 1 million people left homeless by January's earthquake. But, so far, it is the countryside seeing the worst of an epidemic that has killed nearly 1,900 people since erupting less than two months ago.Rural clinics are overrun by a spectral parade of the sick, straining staff and supplies at medical outposts that could barely handle their needs before the epidemic.At the three-room clinic near Limbe, in northern Haiti, a handful of doctors and nurses are treating 120 people packed into three rooms.It's really attacking us, Guy Valcoure, grandfather of the 16-month-old, says of the cholera. He piled on the back of a motorcycle with the baby and her mother to make a 40-minute ride in pre-dawn gloom to reach the clinic.

Holding a plastic cup in case his granddaughter gains enough strength to drink some water, Valcoure watches anxiously as a nurse tries without success to find a vein to give her intravenous fluids. Eventually, a doctor manages to get an IV into the baby's foot. She's going to be OK, the nurse tells Valcoure.Not everyone is so fortunate. It was too late to save an old woman carried to the clinic on a door over the weekend, says Dr. Benson Sergiles, a doctor from Cap-Haitien on loan to the clinic. It's getting worse by the day, he says, his eyes bleary from being up all night.And experts say the disease has not yet reached its peak.The Health Ministry says there have been more than 80,000 cases since cholera was first detected in late October and the Pan-American Health Organization projects it could sicken 400,000 people within a year.A makeshift clinic run by the aid group Doctors Without Borders in Cap-Haitien is seeing 250 patients a day and expects two or three times as many in coming weeks, said Dr. Esther Sterk, a physician from the Netherlands in charge of the treatment center in a crowded gymnasium.The cases are also rising further into the countryside, as at the little clinic near Limbe.

I don't think we're anywhere near the end of this, said Dr. John Jensen, a Canadian doctor volunteering with his wife, a nurse, for nearly a month at the clinic about 12miles (20 kilometers) west of Cap-Haitien.Fear over the spread of cholera even triggered a violent witch-hunt in the remote southwestern Grand Anse region, where locals have killed at least 12 neighbors on suspicions they used black magic to infect people, national police spokesman Frantz Lerebours said Thursday.Cholera made its first appearance on record in Haiti near the central town of Mirebalais. From there it spread north through the Artibonite region. It has sickened thousands in the capital, but it is the vast rural population that is most vulnerable because cholera is spread by bacteria in contaminated water, and poor rural people often have no access to clean water and no clinics nearby.Most Haitians live in rural areas and most don't have latrines, said Dr. Louise Ivers of the medical aid group Partners in Health. Most people have to do their business in a hole in the back garden and drink water from an unprotected source.It is these people who have the fewest options when they get sick. Why do you die from cholera? Because you don't have access to health care, Ivers said. A hospital in the central Haitian city of Maissade has just two physicians to care for a population of 60,000. That center along had treated 350 cholera patients as of last week, said Dr. Tim Rindlisbacher of Toronto, Canada, who recently worked there as a volunteer with the Canadian aid group Humanity First. He said he believes many more never got treatment.

It is easy to miss it in the rural areas, Rindlisbacher said. There's a lot of people who never make it to a hospital, never make it to a doctor and there's no way of tracking those people.In much of the countryside, public transportation is rare. The nearest doctor or nurse could be a trek of many hours through the mountains. Even in the cities, ambulances don't exist and cholera patients usually travel by taxi or collective transport. Associated Press journalists this week came upon four men carrying a 14-year-old boy on a stretcher along a dirt road, his mother trudging alongside. They had been walking four hours from their village to the town of Grand Riu Du Nord, in mountains about 16 miles (25 kilometers) south of Cap-Haitien to reach a clinic staffed by Cuban doctors, who treated the boy.A maddening fact about cholera, which rapidly drains the bodily fluids from its victims, is that it is easy to treat and most people survive if they get medical attention. Doctors Without Borders says the disease has a mortality rate of less than 1.5 percent among people who reach the more than two dozen treatment centers it operates around Haiti.Yet no one knows how many are dying uncounted and alone out in the countryside.One small village visited by Guytho Alphonse, a public health promoter for the aid group Oxfam, is a three-hour walk from the nearest medical clinic. He said villagers told him that an entire family of six had died of the disease. His visit was meant to prevent such tragedies: he was distributing oral rehydration mixture and chlorine for treating wells.Dr. Thony Michlet Voltaire, who runs a hospital in the town of Sante Borgne, about 40 miles (65 kilometers) from Cap-Haitien, said he was getting 40 patients a day. He said seven people had arrived in such bad shape over the past week that they could not be saved.A lot of people are dying at home because they can't make it to us, said Voltaire, who said his clinic, the Alliance Sante Borgne, was in dire need of medicine, volunteers and such basic supplies as clean bed sheets.Aid groups and international organizations such as the United Nations are working on campaigns to confront the outbreak, but Ivers and others said it will take an army of health workers to stop cholera's spread.Let me put it this way: We have 3,000 community health workers and we are hiring more ... as many as we can, she said.
