Who will participate

Participation in the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting is by invitation only and strictly limited to the criteria and quota of each stakeholder group.

Of the 2500 participants at the Annual Meeting, more than half come from the business sector. Annual Meeting History Timeline

2009
- In association with Qatar, Singapore and Switzerland, the World Economic Forum initiates a global, multistakeholder dialogue on a wider global cooperation system. The aim is to examine ways of improving global governance to meet a changing international reality.
- World leaders at the Annual Meeting 2009 celebrate the 10th anniversary of the UN’s Global Compact, which was launched at the Annual Meeting in 1999.
- The Annual Meeting 2009 provides a global platform for four heads of government from the G8 (Germany, Japan, Russia and United Kingdom) as well as from China and from G20 members in Africa, Asia and Latin America, to help the international community explore the origins of the financial crisis and to begin work on solutions based on a common understanding of the situation.

2008
- At the Annual Meeting 2008, the Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda unveils a five-year, US$ 10 billion fund to support efforts in developing countries to combat global warming. At the same Meeting, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announces a US$ 306 million package of agricultural development grants.

2006
- The Global Plan to Stop Tuberculosis (2006-2015) is launched by Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, UK Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown and Bill Gates at the Annual Meeting 2006. The project – a coalition of over 400 organizations – aims to treat 50 million people and prevent 14 million tuberculosis deaths worldwide over 10 years.

2003
- At the World Economic Forum’s Extraordinary Annual Meeting in Jordan, under the patronage of His Majesty King Abdullah II, the Arab Business Council is established in the aftermath of the war in Iraq to provide an important forum for shaping the future of prosperity and security in the Middle East.

2002
- The Annual Meeting 2002 takes place in New York City as a gesture of solidarity in the aftermath of the attacks on 11 September.
- The Gates Foundation announces a contribution of US$ 50 million for AIDS prevention in Africa, including US$ 20 million to fund the trial of a promising microbicide that could offer women a breakthrough in protection against HIV/AIDS.
- The Annual Meeting 2002 serves as a platform for Canada’s Prime Minister Jean Chrétien to announce the creation of a 500 million Canadian dollar fund for Africa to support the objectives of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development through the implementation of the G8 Africa Action Plan.

2000
- At the Annual Meeting 2000, World Health Organization Secretary-General Gro Harlem Brundtland announces a Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI).

1999
- UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan announces the Global Compact, to give a human face to the global market at the Annual Meeting 1999.

1994
- Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres and PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat reach a draft agreement on Gaza and Jericho at the Annual Meeting 1994.

1992
- South African President F. W. de Klerk meets Nelson Mandela and Chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi at the Annual Meeting 1992, their first joint appearance outside South Africa and a milestone in the country’s political transition.

1989
- North Korea and South Korea hold their first ministerial-level meetings at the Annual Meeting 1989; at the same Meeting, East German Prime Minister Hans Modrow and German Chancellor Helmut Kohl meet to discuss German reunification.

1988
- Greece and Turkey turn back from the brink of war by signing the Davos Declaration at the Annual Meeting 1988.

1987
- German Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher urges participants to give Gorbachev a chance, marking a turning point in the Cold War.

The Business Solutions for Sustainable Food Production works to harness business expertise to generate sustainable, market-based solutions to address hunger and poverty.As part of the World Economic Forum’s Environment Team, the Climate Change Initiative supports several activities, led by the Gleneagles Dialogue on Climate Change.The Forum believes that Corporate Global Citizenship is fundamentally in the enlightened self-interest of global corporations since their growth is dependent on the state of the global social landscape.The Disaster Resource Network (DRN) is an initiative of the World Economic Forum designed to provide the humanitarian sector access to resources from the Engineering and Construction sector.The Energy Poverty Action (EPA) initiative is a private sector initiative created by several CEOs of leading energy companies during the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting 2005 in Davos.Further to the Monterrey Consensus, the Financing for Development Initiative in organized a series of multistakeholder expert consultations.

Faith Communities

The World Economic Forum recognizes the importance of integrating religious perspectives into efforts for shaping global, regional and industry agendas.

Since 2001, the World Economic Forum has been engaging various faith communities in inter-faith dialogue, most notably through our Community for West-Islam dialogue, a dynamic community of business, political, religious, media and opinion leaders engaged in dialogue to promote understanding across different segments of society in the West and Muslim world. During this period, we have made significant achievements through constructive dialogue, support for action-oriented projects, awards to recognize significant contributions in this domain and, most recently, an Annual Report on the State of Dialogue.

The current work of the Faith Communities at the World Economic Forum has expanded beyond the focus on interfaith dialogue, embracing a broad agenda that explores the interactions between faith, religion, business, society and politics. The religious perspective is now integrated in a structured manner into the majority of the World Economic Forum's core work through the following workstreams:

Community of Global Religious Leaders
This influential global community engages leaders from the world's major religions in dialogue with each other and other stakeholders shaping the global agenda, such as political leaders, business leaders, Young Global Leaders and NGO leaders.

Global Agenda Council on Faith
The Global Agenda Council on Faith is a community of thought leaders and experts exploring the challenges that lie in the interactions between religion and society, religion and peacebuilding, and religion and business, and works on identifying the most efficient and actionable solutions to these challenges.

Benchmarking Series
In 2008, the World Economic Forum launched the first in the series of benchmarking reports focused on the state of dialogue between the Islamic and Western worlds Islam and the West: Annual Report on the state of Dialogue. In 2009, this report will embrace a broad agenda, exploring the key issues in the area of business, religion and multicultural workforces.

IMF Head urges caution on winding down economic stimulus

Davos-Klosters, Switzerland, 30 January 2010 − Dominique Strauss-Kahn, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington DC, warned the world’s economic leaders to remain cautious as they examine exit strategies from the various stimulus packages they have implemented in response to the global economic crisis.

If we exit too late, public debt will be higher, he said at a panel on the Global Economic Outlook at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting here today.But if we exit too early, there is the risk of a double-dip recession. In that case, I don’t know what we can do because we have used all of the tools. The probability is low, but the risk is high.He also noted that “Growth is better than expected, but still fragile. In large part, it is still supported by public funding.

Another problem highlighted by the IMF chief is the uneven pace at which the recovery is taking place around the world, with Asia and some other emerging market countries leading the way, and the United States and Europe lagging behind.

Christine Lagarde, Minister of Economy, Industry and Employment of France, and Member of the Foundation Board of the World Economic Forum, agreed that the timing of the exit is absolutely critical. She added that leaders will also have to carefully manage the frustration of their citizens during this process.

What we see in the United States and some other economies, said Lawrence H. Summers, Director of the US National Economic Council, is a statistical recovery and a human recession. The policies to contain the economic collapse have been successful. In my judgement, we will continue to grow at a moderate rate for the next several quarters. But what is disturbing is the high unemployment – which is cyclical, but also structural. In the US currently, one man in five between the ages of 25 and 54 is unemployed. Even after the recovery, according to projections, one in seven or one in eight will remain jobless.

Near the end of the session, Strauss-Kahn briefly sketched out the IMF’s plans for a US$ 100 billion Green Fund to promote low-carbon economic growth. The new growth model will be low carbon, he said. Efforts to address climate change cannot remain stalled because we cannot meet the financing needs.

Globalization promotes regional and global government, a one-world economic system of trade and a form of fascism where global corporations and their elite control the policies and directives of individual governments. The original and primary perpetrators of modern-day globalization number only in the 100's, representative of which, but not exclusively, are members of The Trilateral Commission. Carbon Currency: A New Beginning for Technocracy?

Introduction
Critics who think that the U.S. dollar will be replaced by some new global currency are perhaps thinking too small. On the world horizon looms a new global currency that could replace all paper currencies and the economic system upon which they are based. The new currency, simply called Carbon Currency, is designed to support a revolutionary new economic system based on energy (production, and consumption), instead of price. Our current price-based economic system and its related currencies that have supported capitalism, socialism, fascism and communism, is being herded to the slaughterhouse in order to make way for a new carbon-based world. It is plainly evident that the world is laboring under a dying system of price-based economics as evidenced by the rapid decline of paper currencies. The era of fiat (irredeemable paper currency) was introduced in 1971 when President Richard Nixon decoupled the U.S. dollar from gold. Because the dollar-turned-fiat was the world’s primary reserve asset, all other currencies eventually followed suit, leaving us today with a global sea of paper that is increasingly undesired, unstable, unusable. The deathly economic state of today’s world is a direct reflection of the sum of its sick and dying currencies, but this could soon change.Forces are already at work to position a new Carbon Currency as the ultimate solution to global calls for poverty reduction, population control, environmental control, global warming, energy allocation and blanket distribution of economic wealth.

Unfortunately for individual people living in this new system, it will also require authoritarian and centralized control over all aspects of life, from cradle to grave. What is Carbon Currency and how does it work? In a nutshell, Carbon Currency will be based on the regular allocation of available energy to the people of the world. If not used within a period of time, the Currency will expire (like monthly minutes on your cell phone plan) so that the same people can receive a new allocation based on new energy production quotas for the next period. Because the energy supply chain is already dominated by the global elite, setting energy production quotas will limit the amount of Carbon Currency in circulation at any one time. It will also naturally limit manufacturing, food production and people movement.Local currencies could remain in play for a time, but they would eventually wither and be fully replaced by the Carbon Currency, much the same way that the Euro displaced individual European currencies over a period of time.Sounds very modern in concept, doesn’t it? In fact, these ideas date back to the 1930’s when hundreds of thousands of U.S. citizens were embracing a new political ideology called Technocracy and the promise it held for a better life. Even now-classic literature was heavily influenced by Technocracy: George Orwell’s 1984, H.G. Well’s The Shape of Things to Come and Huxley’s scientific dictatorship in Brave New World.This paper investigates the rebirth of Technocracy and its potential to recast the New World Order into something truly new and also totally unexpected by the vast majority of modern critics.

Background
Philosophically, Technocracy found it roots in the scientific autocracy of Henri de Saint-Simon (1760-1825) and in the positivism of Auguste Comte (1798- 1857), the father of the social sciences. Positivism elevated science and the scientific method above metaphysical revelation. Technocrats embraced positivism because they believed that social progress was possible only through science and technology. [Schunk, Learning Theories: An Educational Perspective, 5th, 315]The social movement of Technocracy, with its energy-based accounting system, can be traced back to the 1930’s when an obscure group of engineers and scientists offered it as a solution to the Great Depression. The principal scientist behind Technocracy was M. King Hubbert, a young geoscientist who would later (in 1948-1956) invent the now-famous Peak Oil Theory, also known as the Hubbert Peak Theory. Hubbert stated that the discovery of new energy reserves and their production would be outstripped by usage, thereby eventually causing economic and social havoc. Many modern followers of Peak Oil Theory believe that the 2007-2009 global recession was exacerbated in part by record oil prices that reflected validity of the theory.Hubbert received all of his higher education at the University of Chicago, graduating with a PhD in 1937, and later taught geophysics at Columbia University. He was highly acclaimed throughout his career, receiving many honors such as the Rockefeller Public Service Award in 1977.

In 1933, Hubbert and Howard Scott formed an organization called Technocracy, Inc. Technocracy is derived from the Greek words “techne” meaning skill and “kratos”, meaning rule. Thus, it is government by skilled engineers, scientists and technicians as opposed to elected officials. It was opposed to all other forms of government, including communism, socialism and fascism, all of which function with a price-based economy. As founders of the organization and political movement called Technocracy, Inc., Hubbert and Scott also co-authored Technocracy Study Course in 1934. This book serves as the bible of Technocracy and is the root document to which most all modern technocratic thinking can be traced.Technocracy postulated that only scientists and engineers were capable of running a complex, technology-based society. Because technology, they reasoned, changed the social nature of societies, previous methods of government and economy were made obsolete. They disdained politicians and bureaucrats, who they viewed as incompetent. By utilizing the scientific method and scientific management techniques, Technocrats hoped to squeeze the massive inefficiencies out of running a society, thereby providing more benefits for all members of society while consuming less resources.The other integral part of Technocracy was to implement an economic system based on energy allocation rather than price. They proposed to replace traditional money with Energy Credits. Their keen focus on the efficient use of energy is likely the first hint of a sustained ecological/environmental movement in the United States. Technocracy Study Course stated, for instance, Although it (the earth) is not an isolated system the changes in the configuration of matter on the earth, such as the erosion of soil, the making of mountains, the burning of coal and oil, and the mining of metals are all typical and characteristic examples of irreversible processes, involving in each case an increase of entropy. (Technocracy Study Course, Hubbert & Scott, p. 49)Modern emphasis on curtailing carbon fuel consumption that causes global warming and CO2 emissions is essentially a product of early Technocratic thinking.

As scientists, Hubbert and Scott tried to explain (or justify) their arguments in terms of physics and the law of thermodynamics, which is the study of energy conversion between heat and mechanical work. Entropy is a concept within thermodynamics that represents the amount of energy in a system that is no longer available for doing mechanical work. Entropy thus increases as matter and energy in the system degrade toward the ultimate state of inert uniformity. In layman’s terms, entropy means once you use it, you lose it for good. Furthermore, the end state of entropy is inert uniformity where nothing takes place. Thus, if man uses up all the available energy and/or destroys the ecology, it cannot be repeated or restored ever again. The Technocrat’s avoidance of social entropy is to increase the efficiency of society by the careful allocation of available energy and measuring subsequent output in order to find a state of equilibrium, or balance. Hubbert’s focus on entropy is evidenced by Technocracy, Inc.’s logo, the well-known Yin Yang symbol that depicts balance. To facilitate this equilibrium between man and nature, Technocracy proposed that citizens would receive Energy Certificates in order to operate the economy:Energy Certificates are issued individually to every adult of the entire population… The record of one’s income and its rate of expenditure is kept by the Distribution Sequence, so that it is a simple matter at any time for the Distribution Sequence to ascertain the state of a given customer’s balance... When making purchases of either goods or services an individual surrenders the Energy Certificates properly identified and signed. The significance of this, from the point of view of knowledge of what is going on in the social system, and of social control, can best be appreciated when one surveys the whole system in perspective. First, one single organization is manning and operating the whole social mechanism. The same organization not only produces but also distributes all goods and services.

With this information clearing continuously to a central headquarters we have a case exactly analogous to the control panel of a power plant, or the bridge of an ocean liner… [Technocracy Study Course, Hubbert & Scott,p. 238-239]

Two key differences between price-based money and Energy Certificates are that a) money is generic to the holder while Certificates are individually registered to each citizen and b) money persists while Certificates expire. The latter facet would greatly hinder, if not altogether prevent, the accumulation of wealth and property.

Transition
At the start of WWII, Technocracy’s popularity dwindled as economic prosperity returned, however both the organization and its philosophy survived. Today, there are two principal websites representing Technocracy in North America: Technocracy, Inc., located in Ferndale, Washington, is represented at www.technocracy.org. A sister organization in Vancouver, British Columbia is Technocracy Vancouver, can be found at www.technocracyvan.ca. While Technocracy’s original focus was exclusively on the North American continent, it is now growing rapidly in Europe and other industrialized nations. For instance, the Network of European Technocrats was formed in 2005 as an autonomous research and social movement that aims to explore and develop both the theory and design of technocracy. The NET website claims to have members around the world. Of course, a few minor league organizations and their websites cannot hope to create or implement a global energy policy, but it’s not because the ideas aren’t still alive and well. A more likely influence on modern thinking is due to Hubbert’s Peak Oil Theory introduced in 1954. It has figured prominently in the ecological/environmental movement. In fact, the entire global warming movement indirectly sits on top of the Hubbert Peak Theory. As the Canadian Association for the Club of Rome recently stated,The issue of peak oil impinges directly on the climate change question. (see John H. Walsh, The Impending Twin Crisis – One Set of Solutions?, p.5.)

The Modern Proposal
Because of the connection between the environmental movement, global warming and the Technocratic concept of Energy Certificates, one would expect that a Carbon Currency would be suggested from that particular community, and in fact, this is the case. In 1995, Judith Hanna wrote in New Scientist, Toward a single carbon currency, My proposal is to set a global quota for fossil fuel combustion every year, and to share it equally between all the adults in the world.In 2004, the prestigious Harvard International Review published A New Currency and stated, For those keen to slow global warming, the most effective actions are in the creation of strong national carbon currencies… For scholars and policymakers, the key task is to mine history for guides that are more useful. Global warming is considered an environmental issue, but its best solutions are not to be found in the canon of environmental law. Carbon’s ubiquity in the world economy demands that cost be a consideration in any regime to limit emissions. Indeed, emissions trading has been anointed king because it is the most responsive to cost. And since trading emissions for carbon is more akin to trading currency than eliminating a pollutant, policymakers should be looking at trade and finance with an eye to how carbon markets should be governed. We must anticipate the policy challenges that will arise as this bottom-up system emerges, including the governance of seams between each of the nascent trading systems, liability rules for bogus permits, and judicial cooperation. [Emphasis added]HIR concludes that after seven years of spinning wheels and wrong analogies, the international regime to control carbon is headed, albeit tentatively, down a productive path.In 2006, UK Environment Secretary David Miliband spoke to the Audit Commission Annual Lecture and flatly stated, Imagine a country where carbon becomes a new currency. We carry bankcards that store both pounds and carbon points. When we buy electricity, gas and fuel, we use our carbon points, as well as pounds. To help reduce carbon emissions, the Government would set limits on the amount of carbon that could be used.[Emphasis added]

In 2007, New York Times published When Carbon Is Currency by Hannah Fairfield. She pointedly stated To build a carbon market, its originators must create a currency of carbon credits that participants can trade.PointCarbon, a leading global consultancy, is partnered with Bank of New York Mellon to assess rapidly growing carbon markets. In 2008 they published Towards a Common Carbon Currency: Exploring the prospects for integrated global carbon markets. This report discusses both environmental and economic efficiency in a similar context as originally seen with Hubbert in 1933.Finally, on November 9 2009, the Telegraph (UK) presented an article Everyone in Britain could be given a personal carbon allowance.… implementing individual carbon allowances for every person will be the most effective way of meeting the targets for cutting greenhouse gas emissions. It would involve people being issued with a unique number which they would hand over when purchasing products that contribute to their carbon footprint, such as fuel, airline tickets and electricity. Like with a bank account, a statement would be sent out each month to help people keep track of what they are using. If their carbon account hits zero, they would have to pay to get more credits. [Emphasis added]As you can see, these references are hardly minor league in terms of either authorship or content. The undercurrent of early Technocratic thought has finally reached the shore where the waves are lapping at the beach.

Technocracy’s Energy Card Prototype
In July 1937 an article by Howard Scott in Technocracy Magazine described an Energy Distribution Card in great detail. It declared that using such an instrument as a means of accounting is a part of Technocracy’s proposed change in the course of how our socioeconomic system can be organized.

Scott further wrote, The certificate will be issued directly to the individual. It is nontransferable and nonnegotiable; therefore, it cannot be stolen, lost, loaned, borrowed, or given away. It is noncumulative; therefore, it cannot be saved, and it does not accrue or bear interest. It need not be spent but loses its validity after a designated time period.This may have seemed like science fiction in 1937, but today it is wholly achievable. In 2010 Technocracy, Inc. offers an updated idea of what such an Energy Distribution Card might look like. Their website states,It is now possible to use a plastic card similar to today’s credit card embedded with a microchip. This chip could contain all the information needed to create an energy distribution card as described in this booklet. Since the same information would be provided in whatever forms best suits the latest technology, however, the concept of an Energy Distribution Card is what is explained here.If you study the card above, you will also note that is serves as a universal identity card and contains a microchip. This reflects Technocracy’s philosophy that each person in society must be meticulously monitored and accounted for in order to track what they consume in terms of energy, and also what they contribute to the manufacturing process.

Carbon Market Players
The modern system of carbon credits was an invention of the Kyoto Protocol and started to gain momentum in 2002 with the establishment of the first domestic economy-wide trading scheme in the U.K. After becoming international law in 2005, the trading market is now predicted to reach $3 trillion by 2020 or earlier. Graciela Chichilnisky, director of the Columbia Consortium for Risk Management and a designer of the carbon credit text of the Kyoto Protocol, states that the carbon market is therefore all about cash and trading – but it is also a way to a profitable and greener future.(See Who Needs a Carbon Market?)Who are the traders that provide the open door to all this profit? Currently leading the pack are JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley.

Bloomberg noted in Carbon Capitalists on December 4, 2009 that The banks are preparing to do with carbon what they’ve done before: design and market derivatives contracts that will help client companies hedge their price risk over the long term. They’re also ready to sell carbon-related financial products to outside investors.At JP Morgan, the woman who originally invented Credit Default Swaps, Blythe Masters, is now head of the department that will trade carbon credits for the bank.
Considering the sheer force of global banking giants behind carbon trading, it’s no wonder analysts are already predicting that the carbon market will soon dwarf all other commodities trading.

Conclusion
Where there is smoke, there is fire. Where there is talk, there is action. If M. King Hubbert and other early architects of Technocracy were alive today, they would be very pleased to see the seeds of their ideas on energy allocation grow to bear fruit on such a large scale. In 1933, the technology didn’t exist to implement a system of Energy Certificates. However, with today’s ever-advancing computer technology, the entire world could easily be managed on a single computer.

This article intended to show that

-Carbon Currency is not a new idea, but has deep roots in Technocracy
-Carbon Currency has grown from a continental proposal to a global proposal
-It has been consistently discussed over a long period of time
-The participants include many prominent global leaders, banks and think-tanks
-The context of these discussions have been very consistent
-Today’s goals for implementing Carbon Currency are virtually identical to Technocracy’s original Energy Certificates goals.
Of course, a currency is merely a means to an end. Whoever controls the currency also controls the economy and the political structure that goes with it. Inquiry into what such a system might look like will be a future topic.

Technocracy and energy-based accounting are not idle or theoretical issues. If the global elite intends for Carbon Currency to supplant national currencies, then the world economic and political systems will also be fundamentally changed forever.

What Technocracy could not achieve during the Great Depression appears to have finally found traction in the Great Recession.

The Trilateral Commission was formed in 1973 by private citizens of Western Europe, Japan and North America to foster closer cooperation among these three regions on common problems. It seeks to improve public understanding of such problems, to support proposals for handling them jointly, and to nurture habits and practices of working together among these regions.2

Further, Trialogue and other official writings made clear their stated goal of creating a New International Economic Order. President George H.W. Bush later talked openly about creating a New World Order, which has since become a synonymous phrase.
This paper attempts to tell the rest of the story, according to official and unofficial Commission sources and other available documents.

The Trilateral Commission was founded by the persistent maneuvering of David Rockefeller and Zbigniew Brzezinski. Rockefeller was chairman of the ultra-powerful Chase Manhattan Bank, a director of many major multinational corporations and endowment funds and had long been a central figure in the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR). Brzezinski, a brilliant prognosticator of one-world idealism, was a professor at Columbia University and the author of several books that have served as policy guidelines for the Trilateral Commission. Brzezinski served as the Commission's first executive director from its inception in 1973 until late 1976 when he was appointed by President Jimmy Carter as Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs.

The initial Commission membership was approximately three hundred, with roughly one hundred each from Europe, Japan and North America. Membership was also roughly divided between academics, politicians and corporate magnates; these included international bankers, leaders of prominent labor unions and corporate directors of media giants.

The word commission was puzzling since it is usually associated with instrumentalities set up by governments. It seemed out of place with a so-called private group unless we could determine that it really was an arm of a government - an unseen government, different from the visible government in Washington. European and Japanese involvement indicated a world government rather than a national government. We hoped that the concept of a sub-rosa world government was just wishful thinking on the part of the Trilateral Commissioners. The facts, however, lined up quite pessimistically.

If the Council on Foreign Relations could be said to be a spawning ground for the concepts of one-world idealism, then the Trilateral Commission was the task force assembled to assault the beachheads. Already the Commission had placed its members in the top posts the U.S. had to offer.

President James Earl Carter, the country politician who promised, I will never lie to you, was chosen to join the Commission by Brzezinski in 1973. It was Brzezinski, in fact, who first identified Carter as presidential timber, and subsequently educated him in economics, foreign policy, and the ins-and-outs of world politics. Upon Carter's election, Brzezinski was appointed assistant to the president for national security matters. Commonly, he was called the head of the National Security Council because he answered only to the president - some said Brzezinski held the second most powerful position in the U.S.

Carter's running mate, Walter Mondale, was also a member of the Commission. (If you are trying to calculate the odds of three virtually unknown men, out of over sixty Commissioners from the U.S., capturing the three most powerful positions in the land, don't bother. Your calculations will be meaningless.)

On January 7, 1977 Time Magazine, whose editor-in-chief, Hedley Donovan was a powerful Trilateral, named President Carter Man of the Year.The sixteen-page article in that issue not only failed to mention Carter's connection with the Commission but also stated the following:

As he searched for Cabinet appointees, Carter seemed at times hesitant and frustrated disconcertingly out of character. His lack of ties to Washington and the Party Establishment - qualities that helped raise him to the White House - carry potential dangers. He does not know the Federal Government or the pressures it creates. He does not really know the politicians whom he will need to help him run the country.3

Is this portrait of Carter as a political innocent simply inaccurate or is it deliberately misleading? By December 25, 1976 - two weeks before the Time article appeared - Carter had already chosen his cabinet. Three of his cabinet members – Cyrus Vance, Michael Blumenthal, and Harold Brown - were Trilateral Commissioners; and the other non-Commission members were not unsympathetic to Commission objectives and operations. In addition, Carter had appointed another fourteen Trilateral Commissioners to top government posts, including:

As of 25 December 1976, therefore, there were nineteen Trilaterals, including Carter and Mondale, holding tremendous political power. These presidential appointees represented almost one-third of the Trilateral Commission members from the United States. The odds of that happening by chance are beyond calculation!

Nevertheless, was there even the slightest evidence to indicate anything other than collusion? Hardly! Zbigniew Brzezinski spelled out the qualifications of a 1976 presidential winner in 1973:

The Democratic candidate in 1976 will have to emphasize work, the family, religion and, increasingly, patriotism...The new conservatism will clearly not go back to laissez faire. It will be a philosophical conservatism. It will be a kind of conservative statism or managerism. There will be conservative values but a reliance on a great deal of co-determination between state and the corporations.4

On 23 May 1976 journalist Leslie H. Gelb wrote in the not-so-conservative New York Times, (Brzezinski) was the first guy in the Community to pay attention to Carter, to take him seriously. He spent time with Carter, talked to him, sent him books and articles, educated him.5 Richard Gardner (also of Columbia University) joined into the educational task, and as Gelb noted, between the two of them they had Carter virtually to themselves. Gelb continued: While the Community as a whole was looking elsewhere, to Senators Kennedy and Mondale...it paid off. Brzezinski, with Gardner, is now the leading man on Carter's foreign policy task force.6

Although Richard Gardner was of considerable academic influence, it should be clear that Brzezinski was the guiding light of foreign policy in the Carter administration. Along with Commissioner Vance and a host of other Commissioners in the State Department, Brzezinski had more than continued the policies of befriending our enemies and alienating our friends. Since early 1977 we had witnessed a massive push to attain normalized relations with Communist China, Cuba, the USSR, Eastern European nations, Angola, etc. Conversely, we had withdrawn at least some support from Nationalist China, South Africa, Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia), etc. It was not just a trend - it was an epidemic. Thus, if it could be said that Brzezinski had, at least in part, contributed to current U.S. foreign and domestic policy, then we should briefly analyze exactly what he was espousing.

Needed: A More Just and Equitable World Order

The Trilateral Commission held their annual plenary meeting in Tokyo, Japan, in January 1977. Carter and Brzezinski obviously could not attend as they were still in the process of reorganizing the White House. They did, however, address personal letters to the meeting, which were reprinted in Trialogue, the official magazine of the Commission:

It gives me special pleasure to send greetings to all of you gathering for the Trilateral Commission meeting in Tokyo. I have warm memories of our meeting in Tokyo some eighteen months ago, and am sorry I cannot be with you now.

My active service on the Commission since its inception in 1973 has been a splendid experience for me, and it provided me with excellent opportunities to come to know leaders in our three regions.

As I emphasized in my campaign, a strong partnership among us is of the greatest importance. We share economic, political and security concerns that make it logical we should seek ever-increasing cooperation and understanding. And this cooperation is essential not only for our three regions, but in the global search for a more just and equitable world order (emphasis added). I hope to see you on the occasion of your next meeting in Washington, and I look forward to receiving reports on your work in Tokyo.

Jimmy Carter7

Brzezinski's letter, in a similar vein, follows:

The Trilateral Commission has meant a great deal to me over the last few years. It has been the stimulus for intellectual creativity and a source of personal satisfaction. I have formed close ties with new friends and colleagues in all three regions, ties which I value highly and which I am sure will continue.

I remain convinced that, on the larger architectural issues of today, collaboration among our regions is of the utmost necessity. This collaboration must be dedicated to the fashioning of a more just and equitable world order (emphasis added). This will require a prolonged process, but I think we can look forward with confidence and take some pride in the contribution which the Commission is making.

Zbigniew Brzezinski8

The key phrase in both letters was more just and equitable world order.Did this emphasis indicate that something was wrong with our present world order, that is, with national structures? Yes, according to Brzezinski, and since the present framework was inadequate to handle world problems, it must be done away with and supplanted with a world government.

In September 1974 Brzezinski was asked in an interview by the Brazilian newspaper Vega.How would you define this new world order? Brzezinski answered:

When I speak of the present international system I am referring to relations in specific fields, most of all among the Atlantic countries; commercial, military, mutual security relations, involving the international monetary fund, NATO etc. We need to change the international system for a global system in which new, active and creative forces recently developed - should be integrated. This system needs to include Japan. Brazil, the oil producing countries, and even the USSR, to the extent which the Soviet Union is willing to participate in a global system.9

When asked if Congress would have an expanded or diminished role in the new system, Brzezinski declared ...the reality of our times is that a modern society such as the U.S. needs a central coordinating and renovating organ which cannot be made up of six hundred people.10

Brzezinski developed background for the need for a new system in his book Between Two Ages: America's Role in the Technetronic Era (1969). He wrote that mankind has moved through three great stages of evolution, and was in the middle of the fourth and final stage. The first stage he described as religious, combining a heavenly universalism provided by the acceptance of the idea that man's destiny is essentially in God's hands with an earthly narrowness derived from massive ignorance, illiteracy, and a vision confined to the immediate environment.

The second stage was nationalism, stressing Christian equality before the law, which marked another giant step in the progressive redefinition of man's nature and place in our world.The third stage was Marxism, which, said Brzezinski, represents a further vital and creative stage in the maturing of man's universal vision.The fourth and final stage was Brzezinski's Technetronic Era, or the ideal of rational humanism on a global scale - the result of American-Communist evolutionary transformations.11

In considering our structure of governance, Brzezinski stated:

Tension is unavoidable as man strives to assimilate the new into the framework of the old. For a time the established framework resiliently integrates the new by adapting it in a more familiar shape. But at some point the old framework becomes overloaded. The newer input can no longer be redefined into traditional forms, and eventually it asserts itself with compelling force. Today, though, the old framework of international politics - with their spheres of influence, military alliances between nation-states, the fiction of sovereignty, doctrinal conflicts arising from nineteenth century crises - is clearly no longer compatible with reality.12

One of the most important frameworks in the world, and especially to Americans, was the United States Constitution. It was this document that outlined the most prosperous nation in the history of the world. Was our sovereignty really fiction? Was the U.S. vision no longer compatible with reality? Brzezinski further stated:

The approaching two-hundredth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence could justify the call for a national constitutional convention to reexamine the nation's formal institutional framework. Either 1976 or 1989 - the two- hundredth an anniversary of the Constitution - could serve as a suitable target date culminating a national dialogue on the relevance of existing arrangements... Realism, however, forces us to recognize that the necessary political innovation will not come from direct constitutional reform, desirable as that would be. The needed change is more likely to develop incrementally and less overtly...in keeping with the American tradition of blurring distinctions between public and private institution.13

In Brzezinski's Technetronic Era then, the nation-state as a fundamental unit of man's organized life has ceased to be the principal creative force: International banks and multinational corporations are acting and planning in terms that are far in advance of the political concepts of the nation-state.14

Brzezinski’s philosophy clearly pointed forward to Richard Gardner’s Hard Road to World Order that appeared in Foreign Affairs in 1974, where Gardner stated,

In short, the house of world order would have to be built from the bottom up rather than from the top down. It will look like a great booming, buzzing confusion, to use William James' famous description of reality, but an end run around national sovereignty, eroding it piece by piece, will accomplish much more than the old-fashioned frontal assault.15

That former approach which had produced few successes during the 1950’s and 1960’s was being traded for a velvet sledge-hammer: It would make little noise, but would still drive the spikes of globalization deep into the hearts of many different countries around the world, including the United States. Indeed, the Trilateral Commission was the chosen vehicle that finally got the necessary traction to actually create their New World Order.

Understanding the philosophy of the Trilateral Commission was and is the only way we can reconcile the myriad of apparent contradictions in the information filtered through to us in the national press. For instance, how was it that the Marxist regime in Angola derived the great bulk of its foreign exchange from the offshore oil operations of Gulf Oil Corporation? Why did Andrew Young insist that Communism has never been a threat to Blacks in Africa? Why did the U.S. funnel billions in technological aid to the Soviet Union and Communist China? Why did the U.S. apparently help its enemies while chastising its friends?

A similar and perplexing question is asked by millions of Americans today: Why do we spend trillions on the War on Terror around the world and yet ignore the Mexican/U.S. border and the tens of thousands of illegal aliens who freely enter the U.S. each and every month?

These questions, and hundreds of others like them, cannot be explained in any other way: the U.S. Executive Branch (and related agencies) was not anti-Marxist or anti-Communist - it was and is, in fact, pro- Marxist. Those ideals which led to the heinous abuses of Hitler, Lenin, Stalin, and Mussolini were now being accepted as necessary inevitabilities by our elected and appointed leaders.

This hardly suggests the Great American Dream. It is very doubtful that Americans would agree with Brzezinski or the Trilateral Commission. It is the American public who is paying the price, suffering the consequences, but not understanding the true nature of the situation.

This nature however, was not unknown or unknowable. Senator Barry Goldwater (R-AZ) issued a clear and precise warning in his 1979 book, With No Apologies:

The Trilateral Commission is international and is intended to be the vehicle for multinational consolidation of the commercial and banking interests by seizing control of the political government of the United States. The Trilateral Commission represents a skillful, coordinated effort to seize control and consolidate the four centers of power – political, monetary, intellectual and ecclesiastical.16

Unfortunately, few heard and even fewer understood.

Follow the Money, Follow the Power

What was the economic nature of the driving force within the Trilateral Commission? It was the giant multinational corporations - those with Trilateral representation - which consistently benefited from Trilateral policy and actions. Polished academics such as Brzezinski, Gardner, Allison, McCracken, Henry Owen etc., served only to give philosophical justification to the exploitation of the world.

Don't underestimate their power or the distance they had already come by 1976. Their economic base was already established. Giants like Coca-Cola, IBM, CBS, Caterpillar Tractor, Bank of America, Chase Manhattan Bank, Deere & Company, Exxon, and others virtually dwarf whatever remains of American businesses. The market value of IBM's stock alone, for instance, was greater than the value of all the stocks on the American Stock Exchange. Chase Manhattan Bank had some fifty thousand branches or correspondent banks throughout the world. What reached our eyes and ears was highly regulated by CBS, the New York Times, Time magazine, etc.

The most important thing of all is to remember that the political coup de grace preceded the economic coup de grace. The domination of the Executive Branch of the U.S. government provided all the necessary political leverage needed to skew U.S. and global economic policies to their own benefit.

By 1977, the Trilateral Commission had notably become expert at using crises (and creating them in some instances) to manage countries toward the New World Order; yet, they found menacing backlashes from those very crises.

In the end, the biggest crisis of all was that of the American way of life. Americans never counted on such powerful and influential groups working against the Constitution and freedom, either inadvertently or purposefully, and even now, the principles that helped to build this great country are all but reduced to the sound of meaningless babblings.

Trilateral Entrenchment: 1980-2007

It would have been damaging enough if the Trilateral domination of the Carter administration was merely a one-time anomaly; but it was not!
Subsequent presidential elections brought George H.W. Bush (under Reagan), William Jefferson Clinton, Albert Gore and Richard Cheney (under G. W. Bush) to power.

Thus, every Administration since Carter has had top-level Trilateral Commission representation through the President or Vice-president, or both!

It is important to note that Trilateral domination has transcended political parties: they dominated both the Republican and Democrat parties with equal aplomb.

In addition, the Administration before Carter was very friendly and useful to Trilateral doctrine as well: President Gerald Ford took the reins after President Richard Nixon resigned, and then appointed Nelson Rockefeller as his Vice President. Neither Ford nor Rockefeller were members of the Trilateral Commission, but Nelson was David Rockefeller’s brother and that says enough. According to Nelson Rockefeller’s memoirs, he originally introduced then-governor Jimmy Carter to David and Brzezinski.

How has the Trilateral Commission effected their goal of creating a New World Order or a New International Economic Order? They seated their own members at the top of the institutions of global trade, global banking and foreign policy.

For instance, the World Bank is one of the most critical mechanisms in the engine of globalization.17 Since the founding of the Trilateral Commission in 1973, there have been only seven World Bank presidents, all of whom were appointed by the President. Of these seven, six were pulled from the ranks of the Trilateral Commission!

Another good evidence of domination is the position of U.S. Trade Representative (USTR), which is critically involved in negotiating the many international trade treaties and agreements that have been necessary to create the New International Economic Order. Since 1977, there have been ten USTR’s appointed by the President. Eight have been members of the Trilateral Commission!

This is not to say that Clayton Yeuter and Rob Portman were not friendly to Trilateral goals, because they clearly were.

The Secretary of State cabinet position has seen its share of Trilaterals as well: Henry Kissinger (Nixon, Ford), Cyrus Vance (Carter), Alexander Haig (Reagan), George Shultz (Reagan), Lawrence Eagleburger (G.H.W. Bush), Warren Christopher (Clinton) and Madeleine Albright (Clinton) There were some Acting Secretaries of State that are also noteworthy: Philip Habib (Carter), Michael Armacost (G.H.W. Bush), Arnold Kantor (Clinton), Richard Cooper (Clinton).

Lastly, it should be noted that the Federal Reserve has likewise been dominated by Trilaterals: Arthur Burns (1970-1978), Paul Volker (1979-1987), Alan Greenspan (1987-2006). While the Federal Reserve is a privately-owned corporation, the President chooses the Chairman to a perpetual appointment. The current Fed Chairman, Ben Bernanke, is not a member of the Trilateral Commission, but he clearly is following the same globalist policies as his predecessors.

The point raised here is that Trilateral domination over the U.S. Executive Branch has not only continued and but has been strengthened from 1976 to the present. The pattern has been deliberate and persistent: Appoint members of the Trilateral Commission to critical positions of power so that they can carry out Trilateral policies.

The question is and has always been, do these policies originate in consensus meetings of the Trilateral Commission where two-thirds of the members are not U.S. citizens? The answer is all too obvious.

Trilateral-friendly defenders attempt to sweep criticism aside by suggesting that membership in the Trilateral Commission is incidental, and that it only demonstrates the otherwise high quality of appointees. Are we to believe that in a country of 300 million people only these 100 or so are qualified to hold such critical positions? Again, the answer is all too obvious.

Where Does the Council on Foreign Relations Fit?

While virtually all Trilateral Commission members from North America have also been members of the CFR, the reverse is certainly not true. It is easy to over-criticize the CFR because most of its members seem to fill the balance of government positions not already filled by Trilaterals.

The power structure of the Council is seen in the makeup of its board of directors: No less than 44 percent (12 out of 27) are members of the Commission! If director participation reflected only the general membership of the CFR, then only 3-4 percent of the board would be Trilaterals.18

Further, the president of the CFR is Richard N. Haass, a very prominent Trilateral member who also served as Director of Policy Planning for the U.S. Department of State from 2001-2003.

Trilateral influence can easily be seen in policy papers produced by the CFR in support of Trilateral goals.
For instance, the 2005 CFR task force report on the Future of North America was perhaps the major Trilateral policy statement on the intended creation of the North American Union. Vice-chair of the task force was Dr. Robert A. Pastor, who has emerged as the Father of the North American Union and has been directly involved in Trilateral operations since the 1970’s. While the CFR claimed that the task force was independent,careful inspection of those appointed reveal that three Trilaterals were carefully chosen to oversee the Trilateral position, one each from Mexico, Canada and the United States: Luis Rubio, Wendy K. Dobson and Carla A. Hills, respectively.19 Hills has been widely hailed as the principal architect of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) that was negotiated under President George H.W. Bush in 1992.

The bottom line is that the Council on Foreign Relations, thoroughly dominated by Trilaterals, serves the interests of the Trilateral Commission, not the other way around!

Trilateral Globalization in Europe

The content of this paper thus far suggests ties between the Trilateral Commission and the United States. This is not intended to mean that Trilaterals are not active in other countries as well. Recalling the early years of the Commission, David Rockefeller wrote in 1998,

Back in the early Seventies, the hope for a more united EUROPE was already full-blown – thanks in many ways to the individual energies previously spent by so many of the Trilateral Commission’s earliest members.[Capitals in original]20

Thus, since 1973 and in parallel with their U.S. hegemony, the European members of the Trilateral Commission were busy creating the European Union. In fact, the EU's Constitution was authored by Commission member Valéry Giscard d'Estaing in 2002-2003, when he was President of the Convention on the Future of Europe. The steps that led to the creation of the European Union are unsurprisingly similar to the steps being taken to create the North American Union today. As with the EU, lies, deceit and confusion are the principal tools used to keep an unsuspecting citizenry in the dark while they forge ahead without mandate, accountability or oversight. Conclusion

It is clear that the Executive Branch of the U.S. was literally hijacked in 1976 by members of the Trilateral Commission, upon the election of President Jimmy Carter and Vice-President Walter Mondale. This near-absolute domination, especially in the areas of trade, banking, economics and foreign policy, has continued unchallenged and unabated to the present.

Windfall profits have accrued to interests associated with the Trilateral Commission, but the effect of their New International Economic Order on the U.S. has been nothing less than devastating. (See America Plundered by the Global Elite for a more detailed analysis)

The philosophical underpinnings of the Trilateral Commission are pro-Marxist and pro-socialist. They are solidly set against the concept of the nation-state and in particular, the Constitution of the United States. Thus, national sovereignty must be diminished and then abolished altogether in order to make way for the New World Order that will be governed by an unelected global elite with their self-created legal framework.

If you are having negative sentiment against Trilateral-style globalization, you are not alone. A 2007 Financial Times/Harris poll revealed that less than 20 percent of people in six industrialized countries (including the U.S.) believe that globalization is good for their country while over 50 percent are outright negative towards it.21 (See Global Backlash Against Globalization?) While citizens around the world are feeling the pain of globalization, few understand why it is happening and hence, they have no effective strategy to counter it.

The American public has never, ever conceived that such forces would align themselves so successfully against freedom and liberty. Yet, the evidence is clear: Steerage of America has long since fallen into the hands of an actively hostile enemy that intends to remove all vestiges of the very things that made us the greatest nation in the history of mankind.

The myth of airport security

This issue is more applicable today than ever – and provides valuable insight into airport security issues. — Doug Hagmann

By Gary Rudick-27 January 2009: Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab and his predecessor Richard Reid have been successful failures, they failed to detonate their respective bombs but they were successful in causing a reaction in security, which gives them an intelligence win. If they do this, then we do that. In fighting, one often throws a punch that is not intended to hit its target in order to setup another punch that will connect with more impact.The holiday travel season with its increased crowds at airports and other transportation hubs, warrants that security receive extra scrutiny at this time. The recent unintended disclosure of security procedures should not concern anyone, because whatever those procedures may be, they are not capable of the protection that people want. Currently, airport security can be thought of as a chain-link fence, which is to say there are more holes than fence. The large things are kept out but small things can easily pass though and putting up more chain-link fence cannot fix that fundamental flaw.

What we need and what we expect is to have brick-wall security.

I am not a security expert, nor am I someone who has traveled extensively. I am a screenwriter, however. As a writer I am always pushing myself to think creatively or failing that, re-purposing prior creative ideas, quoting Albert Einstein The secret to creativity is knowing how to hide your sources. However, security through obscurity often leads to neither security nor obscurity.As a youth, I watched television shows like MacGyver and played with toys like Legos and the Rubik’s Cube, that pushed the creative engine in me to examine all puzzles in daily life. Recently, while I was waiting in yet another long airport security line, I came to the conclusion that there is no airport security, despite what other more credentialed security experts have referred to as the security theater. I very briefly considered the ease in which a harmless but powerful wake-up call demonstration could be performed, but I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life in court and/or prison for essentially yelling, Boo(m)!, so I decided to write this op-ed instead. Art imitates life; life imitates art. The film In the Line of Fire showed that assassinating the president was a trivial matter.Before you disagree, do not focus on the details of the assassination, but examine the strategy behind the plan. If you require some assistance, you can look at another film, Troy, which shows us that as humans, we are always vulnerable to our own social nature, as the recent White House party crashers showed us all too well. All successful killers and terrorists take advantage of this weakness.

TSA: Targets Standing Around

We all know what happened and how it happened, the it is 9-11 and what happened is nearly 3000 people were killed and the how is terrorists crashed airplanes into buildings. Increased security has been in place since that day, but what are we actually securing? The Transportation Security Administration says that Your Safety Is Our Priority, but an open minded analysis of security by this traveler, says otherwise.

The tragedy of 9-11 has been misidentified as planes crashing into buildings.

To be quite honest if all the terrorists had done on 9-11 was destroy a few planes and a few buildings, it would’ve just been an act of mass vandalism not mass murder. The security paradigm at all airports is dedicated to protecting the airplanes, not the traveling public.Currently, terrorists are trying to get explosives onto planes in liquids and in shoes. It’s only a matter of time before they realize it is an unnecessary hurdle. Prior to boarding the plane the passengers are in the airport. Does anyone really believe it matters where or when you are killed? In the air or on the ground, dead is dead.You should feel rather safe on the airplane, before you get on the plane is another matter, however, as security has now mandated that many concentration points are now available at the airports on the ground not just in the air. The security checkpoints have become choke-points where masses of unscreened people are gathered with the TSA (Targets Standing Around) agents, a large target for a suicide or non-suicide bomber to kill before any security challenges.Banning of carry-on luggage would appear to be the quick, if painfully frustrating, fix, but that is not the case, nor would making the security lines start at the terminal entrance, and forcing people to wait outside, nor starting the security line at the airport entrance.

Moving the problem around does not solve it. The problem is that increased security screening has actually made airports a more attractive target than the airplanes. The fact that we haven’t had a 9-11 level attack at multiple busy airports, I can only attribute to the fact that the remaining active terrorists aren’t terribly intelligent. If I may again quote Albert Einstein,It’s not that I’m so smart, it’s just that I stay with problems longer.If you want to be scared of something, be scared of the free travel tools that reveal security line wait times. The days of arriving five minutes before takeoff are long gone, likewise the unique appeal to terrorists of attacking planes as a concentration point of people.

Airplane Security and Airport Security

Did you ever try to eat the good half of a half-rotten apple? As President Lincoln quoted Christ, A house divided cannot stand.Likewise, you cannot have secure and insecure halves of airports. What real and effective security needs to strive for and hopefully accomplish is a more distributed and streamlined security beyond the perimeters of airports before any traveler can be in contact with other travelers.

Frequent traveler pre-screening needs to be expanded to include infrequent travelers. This needs to be combined with an Israeli-style model of profiling travelers before, during and after their airport visits. Everyone’s privacy need not be surrendered, but it should at least be determined whether or not you are a Trojan Horse trying to get through the brick wall.

In another measure of how what the establishment labels conspiracy theory is quickly becoming mainstream, Bloomberg News carries a story today acknowledging that those derided as crazy for warning that the world is run by a secret banking cabal have largely been proven right in light of the AIG cover-up.The idea of secret banking cabals that control the country and global economy are a given among conspiracy theorists who stockpile ammo, bottled water and peanut butter. After this week’s congressional hearing into the bailout of American International Group Inc., you have to wonder if those folks are crazy after all, writes Bloomberg’s David Reilly today.Wednesday’s hearing described a secretive group deploying billions of dollars to favored banks, operating with little oversight by the public or elected officials.
Reilly goes on to describe how the New York Fed conducted a backdoor bailout (or in plainer terms a wholesale looting of the taxpayer) of banks like Goldman Sachs Group Inc., Merrill Lynch & Co., Societe Generale and Deutsche Bank AG, and then sought to keep it secret from the public.Reilly also highlights another telling quote by Representative Marcy Kaptur during the hearing on Wednesday, when she told Geithner, A lot of people think that the president of the New York Fed works for the U.S. government. But in fact you work for the private banks that elected you.

Reilly savages Tim Geithner’s denial of any involvement in the scandal and concludes with stating, When unelected and unaccountable agencies pick banking winners while trying to end-run Congress, even as taxpayers are forced to lend, spend and guarantee about $8 trillion to prop up the financial system, our collective blood should boil.As we have constantly emphasized, as the global government and the financial takeover accelerates, it’s becoming harder and harder for the elite to hide the true intention of what they are doing, which is centralizing power into fewer hands, destroying sovereignty and creating a one world order run by an unelected, undemocratic authoritarian system.So whereas conspiracy theorists were once sidelined as paranoid kooks, as more and more of what they warned about comes to fruition, they gain more credibility and the establishment finds it more difficult to neutralize what they are saying by means of character assassination.

For anyone willing to open their eyes, the manifestations of America’s almost-certain collision with history are everywhere.

A vitiated state of morals, a corrupted public conscience, is incompatible with freedom.America’s Liberty Ship is dependent upon the twin mainsails of Morality and Constitutional Government to stay on course. It is an irrefutable and irreversible law that these twin sails are indissolubly linked. We cannot have one without the other. America’s founders clearly understood this.For example, our second President, John Adams, said,We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. An almost complete and total breakdown of morality. And by a breakdown of morality, I am referring to much more than sexual immorality.

Morality demands honesty and equity in judgment. Morality is selfless. Morality is humble. Morality is jealous over truth and justice. Morality would never jeopardize the future on the altar of the present. Morality does not place personal advancement above principle. Morality respects its heritage and honors its ancestors. And Morality gladly submits to lawful authority, especially divine authority.But compare basic morality to the modus operandi of today’s governments, businesses, and churches. Instead of truth and moral principles, we find people who are almost totally absorbed by a culture of deceit, selfishness, ambition, and greed. Rightly does the Scripture say,The love of money is the root of all evil. (I Timothy 6:10) Of more than one church or nonprofit ministry leader could it be said,He doesn’t let his Christianity get in the way of his business.Ditto for many so-called Christian businessmen and politicians. In fact, a good many religious leaders and churchmen today would not take a backseat to the most greedy, corrupt politician, or shady businessman that could be found.Sunday-by-Sunday, pastors prostitute themselves to wealthy contributors, community leaders, or politicians. Day-by-day, unscrupulous bankers and businessmen give the shaft to honest, hardworking Americans. And almost hour-by-hour, politicians sell their souls to the highest bidder–even if that bidder represents values and principles that would destroy freedom and liberty in our land.

How is it that pastors are unwilling to educate themselves (and their congregants) about the dangers and pitfalls to which America’s leaders are subjecting us? How is it that businessmen will smugly look the other way as their practices advance the causes of our enemies and weaken our own country? How is it that politicians will allow themselves to be corrupted, not only by evil forces from within America, but also by devilish forces from alien powers? As a result of this total breakdown of basic morality in virtually every distinguished element within the American framework, constitutional governance is also virtually nonexistent. Adams was right: Our Constitution was made only for a moral . . . people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.America’s political officeholders routinely ignore their oaths to preserve, protect, and defend the US Constitution. Routinely! Many have never read the Constitution, or if they have, they desire neither to understand nor to obey it. And even worse is the fact that most Americans (including America’s spiritual leaders) seem totally unbothered by it all. As long as their favorite politician, political party, or personal cause benefits, they could not care less whether the Constitution is followed or not. More than 50 years of moral relativism has now reached almost total and complete social saturation.If I’m a Republican, it doesn’t matter if the Constitution is followed as long as Republicans win elections. And Democrats behave the same way.As long as my party wins, who cares about the Constitution, honesty, or truth? is the attitude of many politically involved Americans–including many Christian Americans.Democrats don’t care if Bill Clinton or Barack Obama lies, and Republicans don’t care if George H. W. Bush or George W. Bush lies. The only time we care about someone lying is when it’s the person from the other party. If the other party promotes evil, we are enraged, but when our party promotes evil, we sit on our anatomical posteriors in complete silence and with full approbation.

And this is the bottom line: because We the People have lost our morality and fidelity to constitutional government, we have countless conscienceless criminals located at virtually every level in and out of the federal government (political party notwithstanding) that are up to their necks in total and absolute EVIL! I mean down-in-the-gutter, Genghis Khan-type evil. I’m talking about drug running, kidnappings, sexual exploitations, assassinations, family ruinations, illegal imprisonments, torture, and mass murder. If they desire it, they do it (or hire/order it done). Because there is no moral compass guiding our churches and businesses, there is no moral compass guiding those Machiavellians in Washington, D.C. After all, where do all these politicians, bureaucrats, blood-merchants, and mercenaries come from, if not from within our own social and religious establishments? Until we wake up to the fact that our country, our Constitution, our liberties, and our future are up against evil–PURE, UNADULTERATED EVIL–we are never going to be able to muster the dedication and resolve required to turn this Ship of State around. Until we get our heads out of the sand and start seeing things as they are (and not as the national news media wants us to see them), until we are willing to stop indulging in the illusions of hope, and until we stop shutting our eyes against a painful truth, it will not matter to a tinker’s dam who we elect or which party is in power. Folks, wake up to it: WE ARE FIGHTING AN EVIL SYSTEM!! And there is nothing that the people who are caught up in this evil system will not do. Nothing! They will steal; they will lie; they will cheat; they will kill; they will rape; they will pillage; they will plunder; they will do ANYTHING they think is necessary to fulfill their evil machinations.Setting our Ship of State aright starts with We the People returning to the basic, moral laws of right and wrong. Whether it is business, religion, or politics, right is right and wrong is wrong! (And one does not have to be a born-again Christian to know right from wrong: anyone who understands and respects the principles of Natural Law can and will be an ally in the fight for right. In fact, sometimes our enemies come from within our family–even the family of faith. See Matthew 10:36.) It means to stop covering for evildoers, whether that person belongs to our own political party or even our own family. It means to stop living for personal gain and advancement. It means being honest and demanding honesty in others. It means elevating truth to a position above expediency. It means acknowledging that there is a Supreme Authority to which all men must submit–and I’m not referring to the US Supreme Court.America’s Ship of State is currently rudderless. And as long as we are expecting someone in Washington, D.C., to fix the problem, we will continue to be lost–adrift in a sea of evil and criminality. Authorities Quietly Reverse Underwear Bomber Official Story

Authorities have quietly reversed the official story behind the Christmas Day underwear bomber attack and acknowledged that an accomplice was involved, despite weeks of denial and derision of eyewitness Kurt Haskell’s description of a sharp-dressed man who helped Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab board Flight 253 in Amsterdam.

Buried in the last two paragraphs of a story about alleged female suicide bombers coming from Yemen, an ABC News report contains the following bombshell.Federal agents also tell ABCNews.com they are attempting to identify a man who passengers said helped Abdulmutallab change planes for Detroit when he landed in Amsterdam from Lagos, Nigeria.Authorities had initially discounted the passenger accounts, but the agents say there is a growing belief the man have played a role to make sure Abdulmutallab did not get cold feet.Detroit lawyer Kurt Haskell maintained from the beginning that he saw a well-dressed Indian man aid the accused bomber to board the plane despite the fact that he had no passport and was on a terror watch list.While Mutallab was poorly dressed, his friend was dressed in an expensive suit, Haskell said. He says the suited man asked ticket agents whether Mutallab could board without a passport. The guy said, He’s from Sudan and we do this all the time,
reported the Michigan Live news website.FBI agents interviewed Haskell and he told them about the sharp-dressed man but officials refused to admit that a wider conspiracy was at hand, stoically maintaining the official story that Abdulmutallab had acted alone. Authorities claimed that videotapes did not show a second man accompanying Abdulmutallab and yet they refused to release any footage of the alleged bomber.Why is this not total breaking news? asks Haskell’s wife on their family blog.I think we now know WHY the video is not being released. Because IT SHOWS WHAT KURT SAID!!!!!! I mean, where is his apology? Where? They come out in the media, basically calling Kurt a liar, then they take it back, but it is in the bottom of another nonrelated article. Ridiculous. And still, to date, no authorities contacting KURT to ask him to look at the freaking video and help identify the guy. It’s so insane to me. We have an eyewitness to this, and they just don’t care.

There seems little doubt that Abdulmutallab had at least one accomplice if not more. Authorities have remained silent on other eyewitness reports which described a man intently filming the alleged terrorist throughout the whole flight, a connection that strongly suggests the attempted bomber was involved in some kind of drill and that his strings were being pulled by people in more senior positions.In addition, Flight 253 passengers reported seeing a third man connected to the incident being handcuffed by FBI agents after sniffer dogs found something suspect in his luggage. After initially denying any knowledge of this individual, authorities were forced to acknowledge his existence but claimed he had nothing to do with the attempted attack, completely contradicting multiple eyewitness accounts that state passengers were moved from a waiting area after it was made clear to them that a bomb had been found.The fact that Abdulmutallab’s accomplices were all described as being Indian in appearance would contradict the story that has been spun around the issue in an effort to sell the public on naked body scanners in airports as well as deeper U.S. military involvement in Yemen.The ludicrous spectacle of long-deceased boogeyman Osama bin Laden apparently claiming responsibility for the attempted attack this past weekend only confirmed that a fairytale was being contrived which was totally at odds with what eyewitnesses described.Now that Haskell’s eyewitness account has been vindicated, it remains to be seen whether evidence of a wider conspiracy will be investigated or buried. Just one month after changing the definition, and with just 144 people having died from H1N1, the flu was given the highest threat classification possible, a stage-six pandemic alert. Zapatero says euro area is stable

Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero has come out in defence of the euro area, as rising levels of government debt, and in particular Greece's deficit crisis, have led to increasing questions over the stability of the 16-member zone.
Nobody is going to be leaving the euro, said the Spanish leader, whose country currently holds the EU's rotating presidency, during a panel discussion at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on Thursday (28 January). More countries are going to be joining the euro. That is the best proof of how successful the project is, he added. Mr Zapatero was backed up by Latvian President Valdis Zatlers and Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou in pledging to make the budget cuts and other changes required for membership.Mr Papandreou denied speculation that Greece will have to be bailed out by the European Union, although an increasingly number of reports suggest EU officials are busy studying methods to transfer aid the embattled country. We haven't asked for money from the European Union, Mr Papandreou said, adding that Greece had already taken steps - including firing thousands of government workers - to cut its budget deficit, which reached 12.7 of GDP percent last year. The Socialist leader also expressed a certain level of contrition for his country's problems, although he laid much of the blame on the previous centre-right administration. Icelandic finance chief Steingrimur Sigfusson was in the Dutch capital this afternoon to meet his Dutch counterpart, Wouter Bos, as well as UK financial services minister Paul Myners for discussions that are just an exchange of information and views - these are not negotiations, according to the Icelandic prime minister's spokesman, Einar Haraldsson.We are hoping to see what scope there is for changes, whether the other sides are open to starting fresh negotiations and open up the Icesave agreement, Mr Haraldsson told EUobserver.Prime Minister Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir told Icelandic radio today that Reykjavik is exploring what possibilities there are to amend the present agreement.Last June, Iceland made an agreement with London and the Hague to pay them back €3.8 billion they used to compensate British and Dutch savers who lost money in October 2008 when their accounts with the online savings account Icesave were frozen, following the collapse of the parent company Landsbanki.

The north Atlantic nation had offered a payment schedule to the British and Dutch governments, but limited to what the country was able to pay. This would amount to an upper limit of four percent of growth in GDP in the case of the UK and two percent in the case of the Netherlands. If the economy did not grow, the country would hold back its payments and after 2024 what remained of the debts would be written off.London and the Hague however refused Iceland's offer, forcing the Icelandic government to narrowly pass a bill that would schedule repayment of the entirety of the sums - worth around 40 percent of Iceland's GDP - and without such conditions.Estimates suggest that every household will have to contribute around €45,000. Icelandic citizens are furious at a deal they say is as onerous as the reparations Germany was forced to pay after the First World War. MEPs seek powers to force resignation of single commissioners

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - The European Parliament is set for new political powers allowing it to seek the resignation of an individual European Commissioner, following a working relations agreement sealed earlier this week by senior MEPs and commission chief Jose Manuel Barroso.Due to be voted on 9 February, the power-sharing deal suggests that Mr Barroso must seriously consider whether to ask an individual commissioner to step down if parliament withdraws its confidence. If he chooses not to let the commissioner go he then has to explain his reasoning before MEPs.Under EU treaty rules, MEPs can censure the commission as a whole but not individual members. This new inter-institutional arrangement, while not legally binding, will further increase the political clout of the EU assembly, a trend that has been growing steadily in recent years.Its most obvious expression has been when it has sought, and obtained, changes to the commission line-up before it came into power - although legally it is not able to veto single would-be commissioners. Earlier this month, MEPs forced the resignation of Bulgarian commissioner designate Rumiana Jeleva, following through on political powers won in 2004.

The five-page agreement binds the two institutions more closely together in a series of informal ways. European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek will be allowed to attend the weekly meeting of commissioners when major laws are being proposed. The twice monthly meeting of political group leaders in the parliament will host Mr Barroso when legislative and budgetary matters are discussed.Meanwhile, the monthly question-and-answer session between MEPs and Mr Barroso will be extended to include Catherine Ashton, the EU's top diplomat, and other commissioners.The parliament has also been granted extra rights when it comes to international negotiations, particularly in the area of trade, where it shall have better access to information and will have attendance rights - although only with an observer status for the head of the relevant delegation.In two major areas, MEPs were rebuffed however. They failed to secure agreement from Mr Barroso that there should be US-style hearing for senior appointees to the EU's future diplomatic service, something they had openly pushed for. EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - The European Commission will in 2010 pay €6.7 million in subsidies to a group of think tanks and NGOs.The grants cover 58 organisations, ranging from some of Brussels' best known talking shops, such as Cafe Babel and the European Policy Centre (EPC), to niche bodies such as the European Paralympic Committee.The top 10 recipients are: the Platform of European Social NGOs on €700,000; Notre Europe €605,000; the European Council on Refugees and Exiles €500,000; the European Movement International €430,000; Association Jean Monnet €250,000; the Council of European Municipalities and Regions €240,000; the Association of Local Democracy Agencies €209,000; the Lisbon Council €200,000; the Fundacion Academia Europea de Yuste €195,000 and Friends of Europe €192,000.The money is part of a larger €30 million a year pot in the commission's education and culture department, which pays for a scheme to promote common values and to get ordinary people interested in politics.I think it's fair that an EU citizen should learn about the European Union of which he or she is a part. World leaders agree on Afghan timetable and funding

World leaders meeting in London on Thursday agreed to start handing over security duties to Afghan forces in early 2011 and finish the process within five years, while also pledging funds to persuade Taliban groups to renounce violence.The London conference was a decisive step towards greater Afghan leadership to secure, stabilise and develop Afghanistan,leaders from 70 countries participating in the event said in their final communique.The conference was called to help Nato allies chart a roadmap out of Afghanistan amid rising casualties and falling public support in what is now the alliance's flagship mission. The military intervention in Afghanistan started in 2002, in response to the attacks on New York and Washington on 11 September 2001. It succeeded in ousting the Taliban from power, but not the insurgency, which has now spilled over to Pakistan and has seen growing attacks on Kabul and in areas which had been secure in the past.Washington plans to start withdrawing American troops next July in case the current surge of 30,000 soldiers does not prove successful. By August, the total number of Western troops will have reached more than 100,000.The Afghan president, Hamid Karzai, warned against a hasty withdrawal and said his country still needed financial support for its army for another 10-15 years.He outlined plans to re-integrate Taliban willing to cut ties with al Qaeda and other terrorist groups and pursue their political goals peacefully.
His promises to crack down on corruption were welcomed, but his credibility is still dented by cronyism and nepotism charges surrounding his own circle of power. Measures include an independent office to investigate and sanction corrupt officials,to be set up within a month.

EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said the international community still backed Mr Karzai but wanted him to deliver on his promises. That is not the case here,said French foreign minister, Bernard Kouchner, as quoted by the Guardian.
Encouraging signs emerged when Taliban regional commanders asked UN special envoy Kai Eide to give safety guarantees if they laid down their arms. But Mr Eide was cautious in sounding too optimistic. The re-integration process is important, but it has to be accompanied by political reconciliation the UN envoy said at the end of the London conference.

I don't yet know the program, only who the main speaker is, Jeremy Brochin, director of Penn Hillel, told WND yesterday. Hillel promotes itself as the largest Jewish campus organization in the world and is known as the center of mainstream Jewish life on campuses across the U.S. Howard Alpert, another director of Penn's Hillel group, told WND earlier this week he agreed to rent space to J Street on the condition the group does not advocate actions that will materially harm Israel or its representatives such as boycotts, sanctions or judicial action; and that they present their views with civility.Hillel's Brochin, however, said his group did not yet receive J Street's full program schedule. After he realized he was being quoted by the media, Brochin changed his statement and said he just doesn't know who is introducing [J Street Executive Director] Jeremy Ben-Ami.However, WND also obtained an e-mail Brochin sent to an Israeli reporter yesterday stating of the J Street event at his group's facilities next week: I frankly do not know what the program is.

J Street's Feb. 4 event will be broadcast live from the university to 24 U.S. college campuses and other venues as part of an initiative to make the group better known locally. The event host committee includes a professor who accused Israel of ethnic cleansing, a supporter of a recent U.N. report charging Israel with war crimes and a host of personalities involved with a Fast for Gaza initiative that demands Israel negotiate with the Hamas terrorist organization. J Street brands itself as pro-Israel. It states on its website it seeks to promote meaningful American leadership to end the Arab-Israeli and Israeli-Palestinian conflicts peacefully and diplomatically.But the group also supports talks with Hamas, a terrorist group whose charter seeks the destruction of Israel. The group opposes sanctions against Iran and is harshly critical of Israel's anti-terror military offensives. J Street is renting the space from the Hillel Jewish student organization at the University of Pennsylvania. J Street's event at Penn is being hosted by characters with controversial views on Israel, including: Rebecca Alpert, chairwoman of the Department of Religion at Temple University in Philadelphia. In a sermon on the Jewish high holiday of Yom Kippur, Alpert compared Israel's anti-terror activities in the Gaza Strip to genocide in Darfur. Alpert also announced she personally undertook a month-long fast for the Gaza population as part of a protest movement that calls for Israel to talk with Hamas and lift a blockade in Gaza. Israel daily allows humanitarian goods into Gaza but bans certain materials that can be used to manufacture weapons or aid Hamas's military wing.

His article in the student-run magazine American Foreign Policy accused Israel of ethnic cleansing – creating such harrowing conditions for Palestinians that they will be forced to move from their property to Palestinian-controlled enclaves or, preferably for the Israeli right wing, away from the region altogether.Ratzman particularly took issue with Israel's demolishing of Palestinian homes. However, he did not mention the demolished homes were mostly built illegally on Jewish-owned land. Waskow is highly critical of Israeli policies in the Gaza Strip and West Bank. In a recent posting at the website for the leftist Shalom Center Waskow strongly defended a U.N. report penned by South African judge Richard Goldstone that claimed both Hamas and Israel were guilty of war crimes. Goldstone's report claimed Israel deliberately targeted civilians during the Gaza conflict. The terrorist group instead launched a rocket offensive against Israeli population centers. The U.N. report equated Israel, which worked to minimize civilian casualties in Gaza, to Hamas, which utilized civilians as human shields and fired rockets at Jewish cities from Palestinian hospitals and apartment buildings. During the Gaza war, Israel sent hundreds of thousands of text messages and placed tens of thousands of calls warning local Palestinians of incoming attacks against Hamas' military infrastructure in Gaza. Just last weekend, it was reported Israel found multiple crucial factual errors in the Goldstone report.

NEW YORK – A jump in U.S. gross domestic product wasn't enough to ease concerns Friday about falling energy consumption as oil prices dropped below $74 a barrel.
Benchmark crude for March delivery gave up 30 cents at $73.34 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.Earlier in the day, the Commerce Department reported a 5.7 percent annual growth rate in the fourth quarter, the fastest pace since 2003. The expansion was driven by rising exports and business spending on equipment and software.But the economic expansion hasn't led to a rise in energy consumption so far. The country is still burning less gasoline than a year ago, and its appetite for petroleum products has dropped for four straight weeks, the Energy Information Administration said Wednesday.This could be more of a warning signal, Michael Lynch, president of Strategic Energy & Economic Research, said of the EIA report. The economic growth rate is expected to cool later this year, Lynch said, and it's scary to think where oil demand will be then.The dollar also strengthened for a fourth straight day as financial troubles in Greece, Spain, Portugal and Ireland pushed the euro lower. Crude, priced in U.S. currency, tends to fall as the dollar rises and makes oil barrels more expensive to buy for investors holding foreign currency.

At the pump, retail gasoline prices continued to slide, giving up a half penny overnight to a new national average of $2.685 a gallon, according to AAA, Wright Express and Oil Price Information Service. LONDON — Economic sentiment in the 16 countries that use the euro rose in January for the tenth month running to near its long-term average, the European Commission said. In its monthly survey of economic conditions, the Commission said its economic sentiment indicator rose by 1.6 points in the eurozone to 95.7, largely because of an improvement in the industrial sector. At its low point in March, the indicator stood at 70.6. The Commission said Italy and the Netherlands saw the biggest improvements in sentiment during January whereas in Germany, France and Spain the advance was modest. For the wider 27-country EU, which includes non-euro members like Britain and Sweden, the economic sentiment indicator rose by 2.1 points to 97.1. As in the eurozone, that was the tenth straight rise from March's trough of 68.

FRANKFURT — German unemployment jumped in January to 8.6 percent, or 3.617 million people, official data showed Thursday, as Europe's biggest economy continues to fight its way out of its worst economic crisis in decades. The Federal Labor Office said 342,000 more people were unemployed compared with December, when the jobless rate was 7.8 percent, with unusually early and cold winter weather contributing to a loss in jobs and productivity. BUDAPEST, Hungary – Russian gas monopoly Gazprom and the state-owned Hungarian Development Bank signed a deal Friday setting up a company to develop Hungary's part of the South Stream gas pipeline project.The agreement is considered another step in Russia's efforts to consolidate its position as Europe's primary gas supplier and undermine the alternative Nabucco pipeline plan backed by the European Union.Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia and Slovenia have also signed up for South Stream, while press reports in Russia say Austria is expected to enter the deal soon.South Stream would exit Russia under the Black Sea and enter the EU through Bulgaria. PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – Doctors and aid workers are running dangerously low of supplies in Haiti's capital and in the countryside, complicating efforts to treat 200,000 people in need of post-surgery care following the earthquake and increasing the potential of many more deaths due to infection and disease.As days turn to weeks, doctors struggling to keep up with demand in devastated hospitals and improvised clinics are warning of a looming public health calamity as earthquake survivors with untreated injuries fail to get proper attention, Elisabeth Byrs, of the U.N.'s humanitarian coordination office said Friday in Geneva.Poor sanitation can also kill as tens of thousands of Haitians living in squalid camps with limited water, she said.Medical teams also are seeing a big shift in the types of cases they are treating, World Health Organization spokesman Paul Garwood said Friday in Geneva. He said there are a growing number of diarrhea cases, as well as unconfirmed reports of a rise in measles and tetanus cases in resettlement camps — a particularly worrying development because of the high population density in the camps.The health care system in Haiti has been terribly affected by the earthquake, said Joe Lowry, a spokesman for the International Federation of the Red Cross. Coordination remains a problem, leaving big gaps in the distribution of food and medicine.An estimated 200,000 family-size tents are needed as temporary shelter for the homeless, international agencies say, but only a fraction of that number are in Haiti or on their way. Dr. Margaret Degand, who runs a private clinic in Petionville, said her depleted stocks were replenished by a French humanitarian organization. Officials from both Doctors Without Borders and the International Federation of the Red Cross said both organizations have adequate medical equipment and supplies. But even some of the largest institutions are feeling the strain. The Navy hospital ship USNS Comfort reached its care limit after treating more than 3,000 people, Air Force Gen. Douglas Fraser, head of the U.S. military's Southern Command, told reporters Thursday. U.S. authorities are now planning a new treatment center for up to 5,000 patients on land provided by the Haitian government. DAMASCUS, Syria – A senior Hamas commander was assassinated last week in a Dubai hotel room by electrocution, the Palestinian militant group said Friday. It accused Israeli agents of killing him and vowed to avenge his death.Hamas said Mahmoud al-Mabhouh was one of the founders of the group's military wing that has been responsible for attacks and suicide bombings targeting Israelis since the 1980s.

Dubai's government confirmed al-Mabhouh was found dead in a hotel room on Jan. 20, a day after entering the Gulf city. It said in a statement that initial investigations show the crime was likely committed by a professional criminal gang, and that the suspects left the country before the body was discovered.Most of the suspects held European passports, the statement said.Hamas' top leader, Khaled Mashaal, accused Israel of being behind al-Mabhouh's death, and pledged to hit back.We will retaliate for the blood of this man who fought you (Israel) for 30 years, from one battle to the next, and was arming the resistance and supporting it night and day, Mashaal said while standing next to al-Mabhouh's coffin at his funeral in Syria.You (Israelis) have hurt us with his killing, but it is an ongoing war between us, he said.This is an open war.Israel's government had no immediate comment.The few details that emerged Friday about al-Mabhouh's death were somewhat conflicting.

PARIS – U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton warned China on Friday it risks diplomatic isolation and disruption to its energy supplies unless it helps keep Iran from developing nuclear weapons.Speaking in Paris, Clinton said she and others who support additional sanctions on Iran for refusing to prove it has peaceful nuclear intentions are lobbying China to back new U.N. penalties on the Iranian government.She said she understood China's reluctance to impose new penalties on Iran, its third-largest supplier of oil. But she stressed that a nuclear-armed Iran would destabilize the Persian Gulf and imperil oil shipments China gets from other Arab states in the region.There is a new push for sanctions at the U.N. because of Iran's continued refusal to engage on the matter with the five permanent members of the Security Council — Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States — and Germany.Administration officials have invited new talks with Iran, but with no sign that Iran wants to do business, the focus has turned to penalties.

As we move away from the engagement track, which has not produced the result that some had hoped for, and move forward on the pressure and sanctions track, China will be under a lot of pressure to recognize the destabilizing impact that a nuclear-armed Iran would have in the Gulf, from which they receive a significant percentage of their oil supplies, Clinton said.The United States is the most visible leader in the new push for U.N. MOSCOW (Reuters) – Russia test-flew a long-awaited new fighter aircraft on Friday, determined to challenge the United States for technical superiority in the skies and impress weapons buyers.The fifth-generation stealth fighter -- Russia's first all-new warplane since the collapse of the Soviet Union plunged the defense industry into poverty and disarray -- flew for 47 minutes, planemaker Sukhoi said.It's a remarkable event, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin told his cabinet, but he suggested the plane still needed work.There is very much to be done, in part as regards the engine, Putin said.But the fact that the plane is already in the air is a big step forward.Russia's main television networks led news programs with reports of the flight and showed footage of the needle-nosed, camouflage-painted plane taking off from a snow-lined airstrip at a Sukhoi factory in Komsomolsk-on-Amur, in Russia's Far East.The plane performed very well. All our expectations for this first flight were met, Sukhoi spokeswoman Olga Kayukova said on Rossiya 24 television.The premiere was a success.

Fifth-generation aircraft are invisible to radar, have advanced flight and weapons control systems and can cruise at supersonic speeds. The new plane is Moscow's answer to the U.S.-built F-22 Raptor stealth fighter -- the world's only fifth-generation fighter yet in service -- which first flew in 1997.Putin said the plane would first be delivered to the Defense Ministry in 2013 and serial production would start in 2015. Analysts have said it would probably be five to seven years before Russia's military gets to fly the new fighter.Successful development of the fighter, which Rossiya 24 said has been tentatively dubbed the T-50, is crucial to showing Russia can challenge U.S. technology.The 1991 Soviet collapse ushered in a cash-strapped time of troubles for Russia's military. EMBARRASSING SETBACKS

Defense spending increased in the oil-fueled period of economic growth during the 2000-2008 presidency of Putin, who has encouraged pride in Russia's military might.
The military has continued to suffer embarrassing and sometimes deadly setbacks since the nuclear submarine Kursk sank in 2000, killing all 118 seamen aboard.
Several failed tests of the submarine-launched Bulava (Mace) intercontinental ballistic missile, touted by Putin as able to pierce any air defense, have troubled the Kremlin.The Interfax news agency quoted an unidentified source as saying the new Russian plane had lowered and raised its landing gear twice during the flight and added that the American F-35 fifth-generation jet couldn't do that (on its test flight).Lieutenant Colonel Marcel de Haas, Russian security researcher at the Netherlands Institute of International Relations Clingendael, was not convinced of the plane's bright future.My impression is that this new fighter plane is also more propaganda than a real expectancy, he told Reuters by e-mail. The new plane is important for future Russian arms sales.

In a statement on the company website sukhoi.org, Sukhoi director Mikhail Pogosyan said the company planned to develop its fifth-generation fighter program further with India, its biggest client for existing planes. Sukhoi is Russia's largest exporter of military planes and accounts for about a quarter of the country's annual arms sales, which reached $7.4 billion last year. JERUSALEM – Jerusalem's first light rail starts test runs this spring, with its sleek silver cars gliding across the city and promising to relieve the perpetual congestion.But Palestinians see no reason to celebrate.They hope to derail the $1 billion tram because they fear it will further entrench Israeli control over east Jerusalem, the part of the city they want as a capital. They've asked a French court to force two French multinationals, Veolia and Alstom, out of the project and are urging Arab countries to cancel contracts with the two companies.The 9-mile (14-kilometer) line runs from Jewish west Jerusalem to the largest of several settlements Israel built in the traditionally Arab eastern sector after capturing it in 1967.

Palestinians say Israel is creating more facts on the ground with the tram, just as it has with its ever-expanding Jewish enclaves in east Jerusalem that are now home to 180,000 Israelis.The purpose of this project is to make a bridge between the settlements ... and west Jerusalem and they use our land, Palestinian land, said Ahmed Rweidi, an adviser to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.The train is illegal and the settlements are illegal.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he's not willing to give up any part of Jerusalem, taking a harder line than some of his predecessors, and insists Israel has the right to build anywhere in the city.

Government spokesman Mark Regev said the light rail will serve all of Jerusalem's residents and beyond, Arab and Jew alike.The campaign against the train is part of a wider attempt by Palestinian activists and politicians to use new ways to challenge Israeli rule over the lands they want for a state. Frustrated by the failure of nearly two decades of peace talks, they are increasingly trying to hit Israel where it hurts — the pocket book.Palestinian security forces have been confiscating goods made in Jewish settlements from West Bank shops. Dozens of Palestinian grassroots groups have been orchestrating a boycott Israel campaign since 2005.Inspired by the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa, they say they've gained momentum, particularly after the international outcry over Israel's war against Gaza's Hamas rulers last winter.Israeli officials say the campaign has failed to dent Israel's economy and bristle at comparisons to apartheid-era South Africa. Jewish activists have been pushing back, branding the attempted boycott as anti-Semitic.The fight over the rail line comes amid an especially bitter deadlock over the fate of Jerusalem.Netanyahu's refusal to stop settlement construction in east Jerusalem is one of the reasons Abbas won't resume peace talks that broke off more than a year ago.

But stopping the trains will be an uphill battle.

Tracks have already been laid on most of the route, which will have 23 stations and link west Jerusalem with Pisgat Zeev, the largest Jewish settlement in the eastern sector. Forty-four cars are parked at a depot in east Jerusalem, ready for a test phase that is to begin around March and last several months.The Palestine Liberation Organization has asked a French court to order Veolia and Alstom to drop out of the project, on grounds that it violates the Geneva Convention's prohibition of an occupier changing the nature of occupied lands.The two firms are members, along with Israeli companies, of the City Pass consortium which is building the rail line and is to operate it until 2036. The court ruled in December that it has jurisdiction, but has not set a date for the next hearing. The Abbas government is also urging Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries to cut business ties with the firms. Among other projects in the region, Alstom is involved in building a rail line between the holy cities of Mecca and Medina in Saudi Arabia. Palestinian officials say they will raise the issue at a March summit of the Arab League. This is the least Arabs can do to support our rights in Jerusalem,said Rweidi, the Abbas adviser. PLO officials said they were unaware of any actions taken by Arab governments. Saudi Arabia has kept silent about the pressure. Veolia officials in Israel told AP the company is in the process of transferring its 5 percent share in the Jerusalem rail project to Israel's Dan bus company. But they insist it's strictly a business decision. The proposed sale would have to be approved by the consortium, but that may take several years.

Alstom, which is providing the rail cars, defended the project.

Spokesman Philippe Kasse rejected claims that the tram creates a new reality on the ground, noting that buses now service the future train route. We are told (by critics) that this tramway is a weapon designed to make irreversible the annexation of east Jerusalem and the colonization policy led by Israel, he wrote in an e-mailed response.Replacing an existing bus line by a tramway is neither using warfare nor establishing a political fait accompli.Jerusalem municipality spokesman Stephan Miller defended the rail project as beneficial to both Arabs and Jews. The train will make three stops in the Arab neighborhood of Shuafat. Some residents there expressed hope it will ease chronic congestion, while others complained that the tracks use up two lanes of their four-lane main road. Hind Khoury, a Palestinian diplomat in France involved in the legal battle against the tram, said the campaign is a measure of Palestinian frustration. In the last few years, we were still hoping that the peace process would be credible enough to come to a conclusion, she said. Now we are taking the legal route.

Police find 6 headless bodies in western Mexico

MORELIA, Mexico – Mexican authorities have found the decapitated bodies of six men in a western state that is a hotspot of drug violence.Michoacan state prosecutors say the bodies and heads were discovered Friday at the entrance to the town of Acahuato. The victims have not been identified.Michoacan is the cradle of La Familia cartel, which authorities blame for a string of recent killings of police and soldiers.President Felipe Calderon first launched his crackdown against drug cartels in Michoacan, sending thousands of federal police and soldiers to his home state after taking office in late 2006.Drug violence has killed more than 15,000 people throughout Mexico since then.

Honduras' new gov't finds nation bankrupt

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras – Honduras' new administration began its term Thursday saying the nation is bankrupt and will likely need international financial assistance to recover from months of diplomatic isolation over its June coup.The first day of the new government also was marked by early morning police raids that resulted in 41 people being detained and several weapons seized in the capital.Newly inaugurated President Porfirio Lobo swore in his Cabinet, including Finance Minister William Chong, who said the administration of interim president Roberto Micheletti left office with only about $50 million in government coffers.Chong said the already impoverished country was bankrupt following months of isolation and cutoffs of international aid prompted by the coup that ousted President Manuel Zelaya in a political fight over changing the constitution. Zelaya gave up his refuge in the Brazilian Embassy and left Honduras on Wednesday, the final day of the term he was elected to.Chong said the Lobo administration will have to approach international lending agencies like the World Bank and International Monetary Fund for loans.

Mike Beebe declared a state of emergency. The storm threatened to dump up to a foot of snow across the region after leaving 13 inches in the northern Texas Panhandle, where nearly all of Interstate 40 from the Texas-Oklahoma line to New Mexico was closed.The closure stranded dozens of people at the Travel Centers of America truck stop along I-40 in Sayre in far western Oklahoma. US to sell missiles, ships, helicopters to Taiwan: Pentagon

WASHINGTON (AFP) – The Pentagon announced Friday plans for a six-billion-dollar arms sale to Taiwan including Patriot missiles and Black Hawk helicopters, but did not meet Taipei's request for F-16 fighter jets.The latest arms sales to Taiwan included communications equipment for Taiwan's F-16s but no new fighter aircraft that had been part of Taipei's wish list, according to the Defence Cooperation Security Agency.The deal includes 114 Patriot missiles -- worth 2.81 billion dollars -- and 60 Black Hawk helicopters -- worth 3.1 billion dollars, the agency said in a statement.

Amid speculation Washington was preparing to act on Taiwan's request for weapons, China had warned Washington against more arms sales to the island.Taiwan's President Ma Ying-jeou, despite warming ties with Beijing, has appealed to the United States for weapons, saying the island must stay on guard in light of the mainland's sharp rise in military spending.Washington is the leading arms supplier to self-ruled Taiwan, despite switching diplomatic recognition from Taipei to Beijing in 1979.
China and Taiwan split at the end of a civil war in 1949. Beijing still views the island as part of its territory awaiting reunification, by force if necessary.

TOKYO – U.S. Ambassador John Roos defended U.S. troop levels in Japan Friday, saying their presence is essential for maintaining peace and prosperity in the region, and stressed the importance of a key Marine base whose delayed relocation has frayed bilateral relations.In a speech at Tokyo's Waseda University, Roos reaffirmed the importance of the U.S.-Japan security pact, now in its 50th year, under which nearly 50,000 American troops are stationed in Japan. He called them front-line forces in case of emergencies or regional security threats.Our alliance is the critical stabilizing force in this area of the world, he said, highlighting China's military modernization and North Korea's missile and nuclear programs.A North Korea that falls into internal disarray would cause monumental security challenges to this region,he said.Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama also offered Friday a ringing endorsement of Japan's alliance with the U.S., despite the lingering uncertainty over the relocation of Futenma Marine air field on the southern island of Okinawa, where more than half the American forces are based.He told parliament the alliance has served an indispensable role for Japan and for regional and global peace.Its importance will not be changed,he said.

He pledged to decide by the end of May on where to relocate the base.In 2006, Washington and Tokyo agreed to move Futenma's facilities to a less crowded, northern part of the island, as well as move 8,000 Marines to the U.S. territory of Guam.But Hatoyama's government, which swept to power last year, has balked at moving Futenma to the north — much to Washington's frustration — and says it wants to review the U.S. military presence in Japan.The victory last weekend of an anti-base mayoral candidate in the Okinawan city of Nago, where Futenma is to be moved under the 2006 plan, has only complicated matters.For years, Okinawa residents have complained about base-related noise, pollution and crime, and many want the U.S. military presence on the island reduced — and Futenma moved off the island entirely.Roos said that in the 2006 reorganization plan the two governments examined virtually every conceivable alternative before concluding that Nago was the best location.He said that given the trends in the security environment, Okinawa is becoming not less, but more important for the defense of Japan and the maintenance of peace in the region.

Climate change to triple Australia fire danger: report

SYDNEY (AFP) – Climate change could more than triple the risk of catastrophic wildfires in parts of Australia, a top environmental group warned Thursday, almost a year since savage firestorms that killed 173 people.Greenpeace warned that, without a new climate treaty to replace the Kyoto Protocol, the frequency of severe fire danger in drought-parched southeastern Australia would grow threefold by 2050.

Catastrophic conditions similar to those ahead of February's so-called Black Saturday wildfires which killed 173 people in towns around Melbourne would occur once every three years, instead of once in every 33.The frequency of catastrophic fire danger could increase more than tenfold in Melbourne, and the number of total fire ban days could triple in Sydney, Adelaide and Canberra by 2050,according to a Greenpeace report entitled Future Risk.If targets for emission cuts proposed by world leaders at December's Copenhagen summit were adopted in a new global treaty, southeastern Australia would still face at least a doubling of severe fire risk, Greenpeace said.If we do nothing to address climate change we are knowingly placing more lives and property at risk, said Greenpeace CEO Linda Selvey.According to the report temperatures in Australia had warmed an average 0.9 degrees Celsius (33.6 F) since 1950, with the greatest intensification of heat in the country's east, which was accompanied by markedly declining rainfall.Hotter, drier weather is a recipe for bushfire disaster in regions of Australia home to the majority of the population," it said, adding that the changing climate had noticeably prolonged the annual fire season.
