Pray ball-1,000 attend Yom Kippur service at ballpark in New Jersey-worshipers from Temple Har Shalom, a reform congregation, reportedly able to maintain social distancing in the 6,100 capacity arena-By Marcy Oster-sep 30,20-Today, 8:31 pm

A minor league ballpark in New Jersey was transformed into a large synagogue for Yom Kippur.About 1,000 congregants from Temple Har Shalom, a Reform congregation in Warren, spread throughout the TD Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater Township for Yom Kippur services, WABC-TV reported. The worshipers were able to sit socially distanced but also see each other, according to the report.Josh Kalafer, a member of Temple Har Shalom, and his family own the Somerset Patriots, an independent baseball squad in the Atlantic League with no affiliation to any Major League team.“It’s one of the most meaningful things we’ve ever been a part of,” Kalafer told WABC.The ballpark, in central New Jersey, has a capacity of 6,100.

Northern community successfully transfers ancient ritual bath to new home-Kibbutz Hannaton in the Jezreel Valley raised hundreds of thousands of shekels needed to move 57-ton Roman-era mikveh discovered during highway construction-By Jessica Steinberg-sep 30,20-Today, 7:37 pm

A Roman-era mikveh, or ritual bath, was successfully transferred this week from a highway interchange under construction to Kibbutz Hannaton, a nearby community in the Jezreel Valley. It took two weeks to prepare the transfer of the 57-ton stone bath, which included detaching it from bedrock, surrounding it with a steel cage to protect it, and hoisting it onto a tractor-trailer to move it down the road to its new home on the kibbutz, near the community’s existing ritual bath.“It was really against all odds,” said Steve Gray, a kibbutz member who was part of the team that moved the unlikely project toward completion. “It was a rollercoaster of emotions the whole way.”The summertime discovery of the ancient ritual bath united the kibbutz, the Israel Antiquities Authority, a public infrastructure company, and the local government in the efforts to save it for posterity. The existence of the mikveh, found on the remains of an ancient farm, indicated that the residents were Jewish and led a traditional way of life, according to the Israel Antiquities Authority archaeologists in charge of the dig, Abd Elghani Ibrahim and Dr. Walid Atrash. It was the first Jewish farm from the Second Temple period found in the Galilee, they said, changing long-held notions that Jews in the Roman period lived only in villages and towns.About 1,700 years have passed since the farm was destroyed in an earthquake, and about 1,400 years since the site was finally abandoned. The Roman-era farm and ritual bath discovered during the construction of a highway in the Lower Galilee, in June 2020 (Courtesy Ibrahim/Israel Antiquities Authority)-Gray, a tour guide currently out of work due to the coronavirus, was volunteering on the Israel Antiquities Authority dig that unexpectedly uncovered the ritual bath in June during the construction of a highway overseen by Netivei Yisrael, the National Transport Infrastructure Company. When the mivkeh was discovered, locals were allowed to come and see it. Hannaton resident Haviva Ner-David, a rabbi and writer who runs the Shmaya Mikva on the kibbutz, saw the mikveh and decided to try to bring it to Hannaton.Ner-David, Gray and another community member, Anat Harrel, who spearheaded an effort to raise 256,500 shekels ($75,000), enough money to dig up the ritual bath and move it to the kibbutz’s land — a task that seemed nearly impossible.“There was a point in the first week of August when we thought we’d have to return money to donors,” said Gray, referring to the money raised from a crowdfunding campaign and family foundations that pitched in as well. Finally, working with the local government authority, the kibbutz team was given the final portion from a budget set aside for archaeological and historical preservation projects. The highway authority gave them until September 13 to remove the ritual bath.A 500-ton crane was used to lift the mikveh out of its base and then drop it into its new home at Hannaton, a deep hole that was seven meters wide and three meters deep. The crane that moved the Roman-era ritual bath to its new home in Kibbutz Hannaton in September 2020 (Courtesy Yuli Schwartz/Israel Antiquities Authority)-Once the mikveh was placed in the hole, there was great celebration among the kibbutz members, said Gray.“It was so much more emotional than I had anticipated,” he said. Now the kibbutz has to figure out what to do with the area that is centered with the ancient mikveh. The Israel Antiquities Authority has technically lent the ritual bath to the kibbutz, and the community has to figure out how to present the national treasure to the public, whether that will include using it as a ritual bath, or creating an archaeological park out of the space.Whatever the decision, it is something of a miracle that the bath is now located at Hannaton, said Gray.“It’s the power of the narrative that got people enthused,” he said. “It’s a confluence of things, of people who are enthusiastic and the story and Hannaton.”

ArchaeologyTefah unit used in sukka building for Feast of Tabernacles-Rabbinic debate settled? Study takes measure of biblical ‘handbreadth’ unit-Comparison of 350 years of Iron Age storage jars finds that despite changing vessel shapes, the rims maintain diameter of a man’s hand — the source of the elusive ‘tefah’ measure-By Amanda Borschel-Dan-sep 30,20-Today, 5:55 pm

Pottery production was man’s work back in Iron Age Israel. A new Israeli study comparing the dimensions of hundreds of ceramic storage jars over 350 years of production discovered that the inner-rim diameter measure remained consistent with the width of a man’s hand, an elusive unit known from biblical times as a tefah. The tefah unit is attested to in the Hebrew Bible (see Numbers 25:25 and 37:12), as well as in ancient Assyrian and Egyptian sources. But the precise measurement of the biblical unit has remained a matter of longtime rabbinical debate. While Iron Age vessels’ body shapes and volumes morphed drastically over the centuries, their average inner-rim diameters — between 8.85 and 8.97 centimeters — appear to be a uniform Iron Age unit that corresponds with the width of the average male’s hand. Moreover, the study states that palm dimensions have barely changed in the past 3,000 years: The team used 1980 data from the United States Army, which, when ordering gloves for their male soldiers, found their men’s handbreadth mean value to be 8.67±0.48 centimeters. Therefore, the elusive tefah unit can be confidently measured in modern male handbreadths. The measure of the tefah unit is far from hypothetical in Jewish law today. In practical terms, the ancient measurement is still used for a variety of situations, including the upcoming Feast of the Tabernacles in which Jews’ makeshift huts are built according to prescribed biblical units. From Left-to-right: Storage jars from Khiyife, Hippo, Lmlk. The ‘tefah’ inner-rim diameter is outlined in red. (Hebrew University)-According to a Hebrew University press release, rabbis have tried to give modern conversions, with two leading theories that were posited by Avraham Chaim Naeh and the Chazon Ish, both 20th century pre-State Palestine Orthodox rabbis. “According to Rabbi Chaim Naeh, one tefah = 8 centimeters, whereas according to the Chazon Ish one tefah = 9.6 centimeters,” writes the press release, noting that the new study’s average tefah jar rim diameter is “squarely in between.”A signature move-According to study co-author Ortal Harush, the standardized handbreadth jar rim diameters — dating from pre-Temple times to the early First Temple period — were very much a manufacturing “signature” among professional potters.Harush, an expert in ceramic technology, said the Iron Age potters were experts — skilled craftsmen, versus amateurs who created almost disposable vessels for household use. Like the modern masters she has studied from India, these Iron Age men would have eschewed tools and instead used their hands to measure their jar rims. For these potters, making a standardized rim measurement was as instinctive as any number of mindless chores performed today.“Just as you brush your teeth the same way every morning, without thinking about it,” Harush told The Times of Israel, these men would have used their hands in an innate, automatic way to finish assembling the tops of pots in a standardized manner. “The things you’re not thinking about — this is who you are.”
Ortal Harush (Hebrew University)-The study was conducted by Hebrew University of Jerusalem’s Harush, Israel Antiquities Authority’s Avshalom Karasik and Weizmann Institute’s Uzy Smilansky. Titled “The Morphology of Iron Age Storage Jars and Its Relation to the Handbreadth Measure (Biblical Tefach),” it was recently published in BASOR, the Bulletin of the American Schools of Oriental Research.Judean L’Melech jar. (Yael Yuluvitz/IAA)-Harush said that the comparison ceramic study began coincidentally as she and Karasik chatted and compared notes on what they were working on side by side in the lab. It turned out they were both studying Iron Age pottery: Karasik worked on royal Judah Kingdom storage jars (8-7th century BCE) and Harush on “hippo” jars from northern Israel (Israelite Kingdom, 9th century BCE). They quickly realized that of all the measurements, only the rim measurements were consistent between the two pottery assemblages.Under the direction of their supervisor, Smilansky, the pair looked at a third sample of Iron Age jars that was already in the database, an assemblage from Khirbet Qeiyafa (Judah Kingdom; early 10th century BCE). To their amazement they found the same consistent handbreadth measure. The team generated high precision 3D-digitized models of the 307 Iron Age jars, which all resulted in the same handbreadth measurement, regardless of the pots’ different production times, vessel shapes, volumes, and find locations.-The plot thickens-For a control group, the researchers randomly chose another assemblage that was already found in their database. They generated 3-D models of 259 Roman-era jars from Shuafat, near Jerusalem, and here — in a complete surprise to the scholars, said Harush — is where we see a shift in the potters’ gender balance. The Shuafat jars, dated to the 1st century CE, exhibit the same consistent use of a handbreadth measure — but this time the hands were much smaller, leading the team to conclude they were most likely of females, said Harush. The authors write, “Similar behavior was observed in the Roman ensemble, with one important difference — the observed distribution of the inner rim diameter is similar (but not identical) to the distribution of the handbreadth of the modern female.”Storage jars from Khirbet Qeiyafa (Clara Amit/IAA)Again, the team compared the measures with available US Army data. “Quantitatively, the mean handbreadth for female soldiers is 7.82 ± 0.39 cm and for the Shoafat group it is 7.87 ± 0.79,” they write. In the article and in a Hebrew University press release, efforts are made to tie the tefah measure of the pots to Jewish law dealing with purity and vessels. Harush said, measuredly, that it was perhaps one of the potters’ considerations in using the unit.“Maybe they have rules, but I don’t know. We know of purity and impurity laws in later periods,” she said, noting that at least some of these pots were produced prior to the First Temple. “The spiritual consideration is one of the considerations [for standardized production], but eventually they produced the storage jars to deliver goods and for taxes.”

Azeris use Israeli-made drones as conflict escalates with Armenia — report-As two countries fight for 4th day over separatist Nagorno-Karabakh region, assistant to the president of Azerbaijan lauds Israeli military technology-By TOI staff and AP-sep 30,20-Today, 6:20 pm

The Azeri military has been using Israeli-made attack drones during the recent uptick in violence with neighboring Armenia, Hikmet Hajiyev, assistant to the president of Azerbaijan, said in an interview with the Israeli Walla news outlet Wednesday.Heavy fighting between Armenian and Azerbaijani forces over the separatist region of Nagorno-Karabakh continued for a fourth straight day on Wednesday, in the biggest escalation in years of a decades-old conflict that has killed dozens and left scores of others wounded. In the interview, Hajiyev said that his country has used Israeli drones, including loitering munitions, or “kamikaze drones,” in the recent round of fighting and lauded their effectiveness.“Hats off to the engineers who designed it,” Hajiyev said.He also said that the Azeris “very much appreciate the cooperation with Israel, especially the defense cooperation.”A view of an apartment building that was allegedly damaged by recent shelling during fighting over the breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabakh in Tartar region, Azerbaijan, Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2020. (AP Photo/Aziz Karimov)-Israel and Azerbaijan enjoy security and import agreements and it is speculated that Israel supplies 60 percent of the Azeri military’s armaments, while Azerbaijan supplies a large amount of natural fuel to the Jewish state.Asked if he was disappointed by the silence from Israel regarding the recent fighting, Hajiyev said unequivocally, “No, no, Israel and Azerbaijan understand our situation,” and cited the multiple agreements between the two nations.Asked about recent sightings of Azeri cargo planes that reportedly landed in Israeli military bases, and if Israel was supplying Azerbaijan with weapons for the current round of fighting, Hajiyev said he didn’t think so and brushed the question off, citing the defense agreements between the two nations, and noting that they are not a secret.Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry said Armenian forces started shelling the town of Tartar on Wednesday morning, damaging “civilian infrastructure” and wounding people, while Armenian military officials reported that Azerbaijani forces were bombing positions of the Nagorno-Karabakh army in the north of the war-torn region.Armenian officials alleged that Turkish drones and F-16 fighter jets were being used. Turkey has denied supplying Azerbaijan with arms, and Azerbaijan said it didn’t have any F-16 jets. The fighting in Nagorno-Karabakh erupted Sunday and has continued despite mounting calls for a ceasefire from around the globe.Nagorno-Karabakh lies within Azerbaijan but has been under the control of ethnic Armenian forces backed by the Armenian government since 1994, at the end of a separatist war following the breakup of the Soviet Union three years earlier. The region in the Caucasus Mountains of about 4,400 square kilometers (1,700 square miles), or about the size of the US state of Delaware, is 50 kilometers (30 miles) from the Armenian border. Soldiers backed by Armenia also occupy some Azerbaijani territory outside the region. The conflict escalated on Tuesday, with Armenia alleging Turkish involvement and claiming that a Turkish F-16 fighter jet shot down an SU-25 from its air force in Armenian airspace, killing the pilot. In this image taken from video released by the Armenian Defense Ministry on Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2020, Armenian solders guard their position in the self-proclaimed Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh, Azerbaijan. (Armenian Defense Ministry via AP)-Turkey, which has been vocal about siding with Azerbaijan in the dispute, denied those claims, and so did Azerbaijan. In the meantime, European officials are seeking to bring the opposing sides to the negotiating table.French President Emmanuel Macron, speaking on Wednesday at a news conference in Riga, Latvia, called for talks between France, Russia and the United States — the three countries co-chair the Minsk group, set up in 1992 by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe to resolve the conflict — to mediate.“I will speak to President (Vladimir) Putin tonight and, I think, President (Donald) Trump tomorrow to discuss and propose an exit strategy” for the crisis, Marcon said.

IDF closes fighter jet squadron, ending 67 years of operations-Move comes as part of military’s Momentum Plan, meant to free up resources for more advanced aircraft; troops to be moved to other units-By Judah Ari Gross-sep 30,20-Today, 5:55 pm

The Israeli Air Force on Wednesday shuttered a squadron of fighter jets as part of the military’s Momentum Plan, in a bid to free up resources for more advanced aircraft going forward.Earlier this year, IAF commander Maj. Gen. Amikam Norkin picked the 117th First Jet Squadron, which currently flies F-16 jets out of northern Israel’s Ramat David airbase, for closure, ending the outfit’s 67 years of operation through all of the country’s wars but its first.“This is a historic day in the air force, which is closing one of the most active and operational squadrons in the force’s history today,” Norkin said at the closing ceremony.“The ‘First Jet’ Squadron and its operations are an inseparable part of the history of the air force,” he said.Illustrative. F-16 fighter jets from the Israeli Air Force’s 117th Squadron, which was closed on September 30, 2020, fly during an exercise in an undated photograph. (Israel Defense Forces)-In February, with the release of details of the Momentum Plan, the military announced that it would be closing two air force squadrons, as well as an armored brigade.According to the Israel Defense Forces, the 117th Squadron continued training and conducting operations until “the day of its closure” on Wednesday. The military added that all the soldiers and officers in the squadron will continue serving in the air force.According to the military, one of the reasons to close the F-16 squadron was to free up resources for new fifth-generation planes, namely the F-35 stealth fighter jet, which Israel purchased from the United States. The Israeli Air Force will continue to operate at least eight other F-16 squadrons. The 117th Squadron was formed in 1953, taking part in every war in the country’s history since then, as well as a number of major operations, including the 1981 strike on Iraq’s nascent nuclear reactor, known as Operation Opera.Initially, the unit flew the British-made Gloster Meteor — the Israeli military’s first jet aircraft — and then moved to operate the French Dassault Mirage III, until Israel received the F-16 in the late 1970s.Israeli Air Force chief Amikam Norkin, left, looks at an F-16 fighter jet that will take part in an exercise in Germany in an undated photograph. (Israel Defense Forces)-“The squadron was the first in the world to shoot down an enemy plane with an F-16 [in 1981], and the first in the world to shoot down a MiG-23 [in 1982],” the army said.Earlier this year, the IDF began rolling out its five-year Momentum Plan, which is meant to make the military better equipped to operate in the types of operations that it is expected to face in the coming years. The guiding principle of the plan is to take full advantage of the areas in which the IDF has superiority over its enemies — air power, intelligence and technology — in order to ensure the military maintains a constant and significant edge over its foes, notably Iran and Hezbollah.Though some aspects of the plan require only internal restructuring and reallocation of existing resources, many of its key parts — namely the acquisition of new missiles, drones, armored vehicles, air defense batteries, helicopters and ships — are expected to be very expensive, which will be difficult to accomplish in light of the financial crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Columbia students pass university’s first-ever Israel boycott referendum-Vote follows a federal complaint filed in December 2019 accusing the school of anti-Semitic discrimination-By Hannah Dreyfus-sep 30,20-Today, 5:54 pm

NY Jewish Week via JTA — Students at Columbia University have passed a first-ever referendum to boycott and divest from companies that “profit from or engage in the State of Israel’s acts towards Palestinians.”The news was released to the Columbia student body via email Tuesday morning, the day after the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur. According to the vote results shared with The Jewish Week, 61% of undergraduates who weighed in (1,081 votes) voted in favor of the referendum, 27% (485 votes) voted against it, and 11% (205 votes) abstained. The referendum does not affect the university’s investments. Columbia University president Lee Bollinger released a statement Tuesday morning emphasizing that the university “should not change its investment policies on the basis of particular views about a complex policy issue, especially when there is no consensus across the University community about that issue.”

Bollinger, who earlier this year published a statement tying the movement to boycott Israel to the current rise in anti-Semitism, clarified that “questions about possible divestment of endowment funds are not decided by referendum” but rather through a process involving the university’s advisory committee.Protesters outside the main gates of Columbia in New York City call on the university administration to do more to protect pro-Israel students, October 4, 2018. (Ben Sales)-Still, the student leader of an Israel advocacy group said the vote, which represents the first time the Columbia College student council passed the referendum and brought the vote to the student body, represents a “symbolic loss” for pro-Israel students.“After everything that was done to pass this referendum, the president immediately came out with a statement that the university has zero plans to divest,” said Romy Ronen, a junior in the joint degree program of the Jewish Theological Seminary and Columbia University and the vice president of Students Support Israel on campus.(Ronen, 20, was not allowed to participate in the vote because she is not officially an undergraduate at Columbia; students of Barnard College, the women’s college that operates in partnership with Columbia, were similarly not allowed to participate in the vote.)“Still, what the vote has accomplished is making the majority of pro-Israel students on campus feel unsafe, victimized and disappointed,” said Ronen. “It makes it feel normalized to boycott and divest from the only Jewish state, a place a lot of us call home.”Members of Columbia University Apartheid Divest, a collaborative student group that includes Columbia Students for Justice in Palestine and Columbia/Barnard Jewish Voice for Peace, did not respond to a request for comment. The group posted an announcement with the voting results on its Facebook page Tuesday morning, shortly after the results were released.“We are so excited to announce that our divestment referendum has passed with majority student support at Columbia College! Thank you for your support and for voting, we couldn’t have done it without you! Full statement coming soon,” reads the post. The referendum follows several previous attempts by Palestinian groups on campus to bring a BDS vote to the student body.Anti-Israel students at Columbia University erect a mock ‘apartheid wall’ in front of the iconic Low Library steps during Israel Apartheid Week, March 3, 2016. (Uriel Heilman)-An advertisement encouraging Columbia students to “vote no” to the BDS referendum ran September 20 in the Columbia Daily Spectator, a week before the vote. The advertisement, sponsored by Students Support Israel, said, “Vote NO to hate! Vote NO to keep Jewish student safe on campus.”Hours after publication, the Daily Spectator published an apology for running the advertisement. The apology was signed by the publication’s editor-in-chief Karen Xia, managing editor Shubham Saharan and vice president Isabel Jauregui.“The message, which referenced the Columbia University Apartheid Divest referendum, was clearly inappropriate and did not meet our standards for distribution,” the statement said. “We deeply apologize for giving this advertisement space on our platform and are immediately reviewing our internal processes to ensure that publication of such material will never happen again. Neither The Columbia Spectator nor Spectator Publishing Company endorses Students Supporting Israel and Columbia or its products, services or views.”The referendum vote follows a federal complaint filed in December 2019 against Columbia University accusing the school of anti-Semitic discrimination. The case was the first filed since US President Donald Trump’s executive order on combating anti-Semitism, which grants Jewish students the same protections as other minority groups. In the complaint, student Jonathan Karten alleges “pervasive and ongoing” discrimination against Jewish students by other students and faculty at the school. The UN’s nuclear watchdog said Wednesday it had gained access to a second site in Iran where undeclared nuclear activity may have take place in the early 2000s.“As part of an agreement with Iran to resolve safeguards implementation issues specified by the IAEA, the agency this week conducted a complementary access at the second location in the country and took environmental samples,” the International Atomic Energy Agency said in a statement.Late last month Iran announced it would allow the IAEA access to two sites — their exact locations have not been made public — following a visit to Tehran by IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi.Iran agreed to grant access to both sites on specific dates this month, Reuters reported. The first site was visited by inspectors in early September.Iran had denied the agency access to the locations earlier this year, prompting the IAEA’s board of governors to pass a resolution in June urging Iran to comply with its requests. The row had threatened to put yet more strain on the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, which has hung by a thread since the United States pulled out of it in 2018.The IAEA in March identified the two sites as places where Iran may have stored and/or used undeclared nuclear material or undertaken nuclear-related activities without declaring them to international observers. One of the sites was reported to be in Abadeh, south of Isfahan — a location that in September 2019 was flagged by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as the site of an alleged secret nuclear facility.Netanyahu said at the time that Iran had tried to destroy the site and any evidence it had been used to develop nuclear weapons.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu revealing what he says is a nuclear weapons development site in Abadeh, Iran, at the Prime Ministers Office, on September 9, 2019. (Screenshot: YouTube)-At a press conference on September 14, IAEA director Grossi said analyzing environmental samples collected at the first site would take “not less than a couple of months, two or three months maybe.”That means the results will only be available after the coming US presidential elections, in which US President Donald Trump is hoping to win a second term in office. The ultimate goal of the 2015 deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, is to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear bomb, which Iran insists it does not want to do.Since Trump pulled the US unilaterally out of the pact in 2018, Iran has steadily been violating restrictions on the amount of uranium it can enrich and the purity it is allowed to enrich to, and other limits. But one reason the other countries involved — Germany, France, Britain, China and Russia — say that it’s important to maintain the agreement is for the access IAEA inspectors continue to get to Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Paris meat cleaver attacker charged with attempted terrorist killings-Suspect in attack near former Charlie Hebdo offices named as Pakistan-born Zaheer Hassan Mehmood, 25; he admits to initially lying about his identity-By AFP    -sep 30,20-Today, 3:22 pm

PARIS, France — A man who wounded two people in a meat cleaver attack in Paris last week has been charged with “attempted murder with relation to a terrorist enterprise,” French anti-terrorist prosecutors told AFP on Tuesday.A judge also placed the man — who has identified himself as 25-year-old Pakistani-born Zaheer Hassan Mehmood — under judicial investigation for criminal association with terrorists, the prosecuting authority PNAT said, adding that a request had been made for him to be remanded in custody.Earlier, the suspect admitted he lied to police when he said he was 18 and had entered the country as a minor, the lead prosecutor in the case said. The assailant in what the French government has called an act of Islamist terrorism had initially identified himself as Hassan A., an 18-year-old born in the Pakistani town of Mandi Bahauddin. He entered France in 2018 under the false identity that gave him access to social security aid for minors, national anti-terror prosecutor Jean-Francois Ricard told a news conference. After the attack last Friday, investigators became suspicious about his claims when they found a photo of an identity document on his phone that appeared to suggest he was actually called Zaheer Hassan Mehmood, aged 25.“He eventually admitted that this was his true identity and that he was 25 years old,” Ricard said. This grab taken from a video obtained by AFP shows French police detaining an alleged suspect after several people were injured near the former offices of the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo following an attack by a man wielding a knife in Paris on September 25, 2020 (Laura CAMBAUD / AFP)It was under that identity that he appeared in a video filmed before the attack, in which he said he was avenging the publication of caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad by the satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo. The magazine was the scene of a massacre by Islamist gunmen in January 2015, and the trial of 14 alleged accomplices in that attack is currently underway in Paris. The attacker seriously wounded two employees of a TV production agency whose offices are on the same block that used to house Charlie Hebdo. They are now in stable condition, officials said.He told investigators he thought he was targeting employees of Charlie Hebdo but did not realize they had since moved to a new location that is kept secret because of security risks.Ricard said the attacker had never attracted the attention of any government intelligence agency before Friday’s assault.

Gazans left stranded abroad due to PA decision to cut ties with Israel-‘This is a humanitarian situation. The political situation shouldn’t enter into it,’ says one Gazan stuck in Amman; Palestinians say more than 30,000 newborns left unregistered-By Agencies and TOI staff-sep 30,20-Today, 12:22 pm

For the last four months, Ahmed al-Kurdi, his wife and three children have been stranded in Jordan, where they traveled from their home in the Gaza Strip for life-saving medical treatment for his 2-year-old daughter. At a time when the coronavirus pandemic has led to border closures and travel restrictions, they find themselves stuck, not because of quarantine measures, but because of a dispute between Israel and the Palestinian Authority. They need an Israeli permit to return to Gaza through the West Bank and Israel, which would normally be facilitated by the PA’s civil affairs division. But the Palestinians officially cut off all ties with Israel in May to protest Israel’s plans — since suspended — to annex parts of the West Bank, making it even more complicated to get permission to travel. The Palestinians had hoped to pressure Israel by forcing it to assume more of the burden of its half-century military rule of the territory. Instead, the decision has mainly hurt ordinary Palestinians.Al-Kurdi and his wife, who left Gaza with their children last December, have been on unpaid leave, relying on relatives to pay rent and support them in Amman, Jordan’s capital, where prices are much higher than in Gaza. They are among dozens of families who left Gaza for health or other reasons and cannot return. They applied for a permit through the PA embassy in Amman but were told it is no longer in contact with Israel.“It’s very hard, not just for us but for the other Gazans in Jordan who want to go back and can’t,” he said. “This is a humanitarian situation. The political situation shouldn’t enter into it.”Gaza has been under an Israeli-Egyptian blockade since the Islamic terror group Hamas seized power from PA security forces in 2007 in a bloody coup. Israel allows Gazans to travel for humanitarian reasons but requires them to coordinate requests through the Western-backed Palestinian Authority, which governs parts of the West Bank.Hamas security officers stand guard the gate of the border to the Egyptian side of Rafah crossing, in Rafah, Gaza Strip, August 11, 2020 (AP Photo/Adel Hana)-Gisha, an Israeli group that advocates for Palestinian freedom of movement, has been able to help some families obtain permits outside the normal channels. But it claims Israel is ultimately responsible for allowing Gazans to return home.“Israel’s ongoing control over Gaza comes with legal obligations to uphold the rights of Gaza residents, including to freedom of movement,” it said in a statement. “Returning to one’s home is a fundamental human right that cannot be withheld using procedural excuses.”The Israeli military body that oversees Palestinian civilian affairs, known as COGAT, said that under past agreements the PA must submit requests for residents to enter Israel through the established channels. COGAT said it is prepared to process such requests but has not received any from the PA since it cut off contact.COGAT “is constantly working, together with the appropriate offices — despite the suspension of coordination by the Civil Committee, and despite the outbreak of the coronavirus — to provide the best possible response to the various humanitarian needs of the Gaza Strip residents,” it said in a statement. In theory, Palestinians have the option of bypassing Israel altogether and entering Gaza through the Rafah crossing with Egypt. But Egypt only opens the crossing sporadically, and getting there requires flying to Cairo and then traveling overland across the northern Sinai Peninsula, where Egyptian troops are battling insurgents from an Islamic State affiliate. The al-Kurdi family departed through Rafah after several delays in getting an exit permit from Israel, which was ultimately granted. But that was late last year, before the pandemic.“My daughter’s condition does not allow us to travel by way of Rafah. You have to take a car from Cairo and it can take 11 hours with all the checkpoints,” al-Kurdi said. “My daughter is immunocompromised.”Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas during a meeting to discuss the United Arab Emirates’ deal with Israel to normalize relations, in the West Bank city of Ramallah, August 18, 2020. (Mohamad Torokman/Pool Photo via AP, File)-The PA decision to cut ties with Israel has affected ordinary Palestinians in other ways. The PA is refusing to accept tax and customs duties Israel collects on its behalf, forcing it to slash the salaries of civil servants. The boycott has also affected the registration of Palestinian births, leaving more than 30,000 babies unregistered.Under agreements reached in the 1990s, during the now-moribund peace process, the Palestinian Authority issues birth certificates and passports. But these must be registered with Israel, which controls all access to the West Bank. The unregistered babies are therefore unable to travel.Palestinian Authority Deputy Interior Minister Yousef Harb says more than 33,000 babies have been born in the West Bank since the Palestinians cut ties on May 19, and at least six families have been unable to travel abroad for work because they can’t bring their babies with them.“The entire world recognizes the documents issued by PA, except for Israel,” he said.Palestinian officials say they have reached out to international organizations to facilitate travel but that Israel insists on direct coordination.Senior PLO official Ahmed Majdalani. (YouTube screen capture)-Why on earth should we give our citizen records to Israel? The entire world recognizes us, why don’t they?” said Ahmad Majdalani, a senior PA official. The Palestinian Authority appears to be in a holding pattern, hoping a new US administration will discard President Donald Trump’s Middle East peace plan, which it perceives as strongly favoring Israel and would have allowed Israel to annex up to 30 percent of the West Bank (though Israel subsequently shelved annexation plans in exchange for the normalization of ties with the United Arab Emirates). In the meantime, Palestinians stranded outside the country are stuck in limbo.Dr. Mohammed Ayesh left Gaza in the summer of 2019 to do a medical specialization in Ukraine. After he completed his course his student visa expired, but he was unable to return via Jordan because he cannot get an Israeli permit. Instead, he flew to Dubai, where he has been stranded for more than two months. He hasn’t seen his three children in more than a year.“Their birthdays are all in the summer, in June, August and September… I missed them all,” he said. “My daughter calls me a liar. She says you promised you would return before I went back to school and you aren’t here.”As a highly trained physician, he could find lucrative work in the United Arab Emirates, far from the crippling conditions of the Gaza blockade. But he’s homesick.“People ask me why I can’t return, if it’s because of the coronavirus, and I say no, it’s because of the Israeli military and the Israeli government,” he said, placing the blame on the Jewish state rather than the PA. “They won’t let me come back.”

UAE announces candidacy for UN Security Council seat-Emiratis seeking non-permanent representation for 2022-2023; election will be held in June-By AFP-sep 30,20-Today, 12:13 pm

DUBAI — The United Arab Emirates has announced its candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2022-2023 term, state media said.In June 2021, the UN General Assembly will elect five member states to serve on the Security Council, which has a total of 10 non-permanent members who serve overlapping two-year terms.“My country will follow the same steps and principles upon which it was founded to maintain international peace and security in cooperation with the members of the Council,” Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan said in New York.“We affirm that the UAE will work towards solving the important issues confronting states with resolve and determination,” he said, according to a report on official Emirati news agency WAM on Tuesday. The UAE’s role on the global diplomatic stage has been heightened in recent months with its announcement of normalized relations with Israel, a major policy shift that was also adopted by neighboring Bahrain. In this September 15, 2020 photo, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, left, US President Donald Trump, Bahrain Foreign Minister Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa and United Arab Emirates Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahyan pose for a photo on the Blue Room Balcony after signing the Abraham Accords during a ceremony on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington. (AP Photo/Alex Brandon)-The US-brokered accord takes in four countries that share a common hostility to Iran, which Washington has put under crippling economic and diplomatic pressure.WAM said that the UAE’s campaign for the seat would focus on “efforts to advance inclusion, spur innovation, build resilience and secure peace.”It last served on the Security Council in 1986-1987.Five nations — Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States — hold permanent seats on the world body’s most powerful institution, which give them the right to veto draft resolutions.

University of Illinois students pass resolution urging divestment from Israel-Nonbinding BDS move was bundled with vote in support of Black Lives Matter movement; Jewish student group slams ‘attempt to paint Israel and Jews as the obstacle to racial equity’
By Marcy Oster-sep 30,20-Today, 10:55 am

JTA — The University of Illinois student government included a call for divestment from companies that do business with Israel as part of a resolution in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. The university’s Office of Student Affairs condemned the nonbinding resolution, which passed last week in a 22-11 vote with seven abstentions.“It is unfortunate that a resolution before the group tonight was designed to force students who oppose efforts to divest from Israel to also vote against support for the Black Lives Matter movement,” the Office of Student Affairs said in a statement signed by Chancellor Robert Jones and five vice chancellors.“This resolution includes several points on which we can agree, but a foundational value of this institution is inclusion, and this resolution includes language that we cannot and will not support,” the statement continued. In February, the student government passed a resolution by a vote of 20-9 with seven abstentions that called on the university to divest from “companies that profit from human-rights violations in Palestine and other communities globally,” naming three companies in particular: Raytheon, Elbit Systems Ltd. and Northrup Grumman. But a week later the body’s president vetoed the resolution, saying its passage “made students feel unsafe and have fostered a climate of hate on this campus.”The February vote was the fifth attempt in as many years to pass a BDS resolution against Israel.“After five failed attempts in as many years to pass BDS, student activists enshrouded calls for divestment within a resolution opposing anti-Black violence,” the Illini Hillel at Cohen Center for Jewish Life said Thursday in a statement on Facebook. “This was an attempt to paint Israel and Jews as the obstacle to racial equity, amidst the holiest time in the Jewish calendar.“The Jewish students refused to submit to this anti-Semitic litmus test. Instead they issued a joint statement of principles declaring their steadfast commitment to Zionism and racial justice. During the ISG meeting Senators made clear that they are driven by their Jewish values which call for social, racial and environmental justice.”Jewish students read the statement into the record during the student government meeting.

Scandinavian neo-Nazis circulate anti-Semitic flyers on Yom Kippur-Far-right extremists carried out coordinated campaign in Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Iceland on Jewish holy day, says World Jewish Congress-By Cnaan Liphshiz-sep 30,20-Today, 10:38 am

JTA — Several incidents involving anti-Semitic hate speech occurred in Scandinavia in what the World Jewish Congress said was a coordinated campaign by neo-Nazis on Yom Kippur. Most of the incidents recorded on Sunday and Monday in Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Iceland involved the circulation of anti-Semitic pamphlets, sometimes in the form of small posters near Jewish community buildings. There was no violence in any of the incidents. In Norrköping, a city located about 70 miles southwest of the Swedish capital of Stockholm, a handful of men from the Nordic Resistance Movement stood outside the local synagogue on Monday, which was Yom Kippur, with flags of their movement, the Jewish Central Council wrote in a statement. The synagogue was empty at the time.“The Jews circumcise their babies so rabbis can suck blood from the penises of newborns and according to the Talmud they may have sex with children from the age of 3,” one of the posters seen at that demonstration said. The World Jewish Congress in a statement said the effort was “a string of coordinated actions on Yom Kippur targeting Jews” called on the nations to follow Finland’s example from earlier this year “and move swiftly to ban the Nordic Resistance Movement and rid its violent propaganda from our streets.”

U.S.Father, son from U.S. charged with joining Islamic State-[Associated Press]-September 30, 2020

MIAMI (AP) — A father and son accused of traveling from the U.S. to Syria and joining the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham are facing terrorism charges in South Florida, prosecutors said.Emraan Ali, 53, a U.S. citizen born in Trinidad & Tobago, and Jihad Ali, 19, a U.S. citizen born in New York, made their initial court appearances Wednesday in Miami federal court, according to records. The father is charged with providing and attempting to provide material support to ISIS, and the son is charged with conspiracy to provide material support to ISIS.According to criminal complaints, Emraan Ali took his family to Syria to join the Islamic State group in March 2015. Both Emraan Ali and Jihad Ali received military and religious training and served as fighters in support of the terrorist organization, prosecutors said. The father and son surrendered to Syrian Democratic Forces near Baghuz in March 2019, during the last sustained Islamic State battles to maintain territory in Syria, officials said. They were recently transferred to FBI custody and returned to the U.S.Online court records didn't list attorneys for the men.

Sadly, it’s not a joke: Cuba, China, Russia about to join U.N. Human Rights Council | Opinion-[Miami Herald]-Andres Oppenheimer-September 30, 2020

It sounds totally insane, but the ongoing session of the United Nations General Assembly is about to elect Cuba, Russia and China to the U.N. Human Rights Council, the U.N.’s top human-rights body.Just as crazy, the Council is expected to keep Venezuela as one of its 47 member countries, despite recent devastating findings by U.N. entities accusing President Nicolas Maduro’s dictatorship of being responsible for thousands of state-sponsored killings and the systematic torture of political prisoners. You might not hear much about the voting for new Council member countries in the media. It’s drawing little attention amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. presidential race and other major new from around the world. But make no mistake — it’s a big deal.If Cuba, Russia and China win their seats, they will have a better-than-usual chance to kill future U.N. human-rights investigations. They would turn the Council into a virtual mutual protection society for some of the world’s worst dictatorships, more so than it is already.Voting to fill 15 of the Council’s 47 seats is scheduled to take place Oct. 13 at the U.N. General Assembly. The candidates already have been chosen by the U.N.’s regional blocs, which each elect a predetermined number of candidates.“Cuba and Russia are running unopposed, so it’s looking very likely that they will be joining the Council,” Louis Charbonneau, the Human Rights Watch advocacy group’s U.N. affairs expert, told me. “It also looks very likely that either China or Saudi Arabia, or both, will be elected for their regional bloc.”How is this possible? Simple: Most democracies that are not potential subjects of human-rights probes spend their diplomatic energies at the United Nations to winning seats on commissions that can help them advance their economic interests. Dictatorships, on the other hand, go out of their way to win seats at the Human Rights Council, so that they can fend off probes into their own abuses. The Trump administration, in protest, withdrew from the U.N. Human Rights Council in 2018. While the administration was right in denouncing the Council’s hypocrisy, withdrawing from the Council ended up reducing America’s influence on it, making it easier for it to elect more authoritarian regimes.Putting Cuba, Russia, China and Saudi Arabia on the Council could make it more difficult for other U.N. human-rights bodies to continue their investigations into massive abuses by the Maduro dictatorship in Venezuela, advocates say.On Sept. 16, a U.N. mission created last year by the Council to investigate the human-rights situation in Venezuela issued a stunning 411-page report, concluding that the Maduro regime is responsible for “arbitrary killings and the systematic use of torture” that “amount to crimes against humanity.”Last year, U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet released a report saying that Maduro’s death squads were responsible for more than 6,700 extrajudicial killings just between January 2018 and May 2019.Asked what can be done to stop the likely election of such authoritarian regimes to Council seats, Hillel Neuer, head of the Geneva-based U.N. Watch advocacy group, told me that Cuba’s election to the Council could be thwarted if a democracy such as Costa Rica presented its candidacy before the Oct. 13 vote.“There’s still time to do it,” Neuer said, recalling that Costa Rica jumped into the race last year in an ultimately unsuccessful effort to thwart Venezuela’s election to the Council. “But it doesn’t look like it’s happening.”My guess is that the election of Cuba, Russia and China to the Council is a done deal. The least democracies around the world can do now is to publicly condemn the United Nations for this travesty. It not only violates the U.N.’s own norms, which call for taking a country’s human-rights records into consideration before adding it to the Human Rights Council, it’s also an insult to everything the international body stands for.Shame on the United Nations for this insanity. And shame on all the countries that continue to remain silent about it.Don’t miss the “Oppenheimer Presenta” TV show at 8 p.m. E.T. Sunday on CNN en Español. Twitter: @oppenheimera

Analysis-After years of bashing Israel at UN, UAE and Bahrain dramatically soften tone-What a difference a year makes: At 2019 General Assembly, the 2 Gulf states condemned alleged violations against the Palestinians. This time, they hailed their accords with Israel-By Raphael Ahren-sep 30,20-Today, 10:26 am

Old habits die hard. But sometimes they do die, and this year’s session of the United Nations General Assembly showed that, with strong political will and the right set of circumstances, it’s possible to kick even a deeply entrenched diplomatic convention. For decades, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain have used the UN stage to relentlessly bash Israel and champion the Palestinian cause. Even in recent years, every speech in Turtle Bay featured a condemnation of the Jewish state and the assertion that regional stability will remain elusive until the creation of a Palestinian state based on the 1967 lines. In 2010, for instance, UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan dedicated a whopping 563 words to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. His country believes peace between the two parties is “central and vital” to the entire region, he said. And this cannot be realized without ending the Israeli occupation of the Occupied Palestinian and other Arab Territories and its withdrawal to the line of 4 June 1967, including East Jerusalem, the Syrian Golan Heights and the remaining occupied territories in Southern Lebanon.”Abu Dhabi stands by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and commends him for his efforts to restore the rights of his people, Al Nahyan went on.“Our commitment to the achievement of peace as a strategic choice makes it imperative for us to condemn the Israeli practices committed against the Palestinian people, including the collective punishment policy and the inhumane blockade imposed on the Palestinian people in Gaza, and its flagrant violations to international law, principles and purposes of the UN Charter and international humanitarian law,” he declared.“In this context, we emphasize that the continuation of Israeli settlements and confiscation and judaization of the occupied Palestinian and other Arab territories clashes with the pursuit of peace,” the minister went on. “Either choose to pursue peace or insist on continuing the settlements. Combining the two is incompatible with peace.”We emphasize that the continuation of Israeli settlements and confiscation and judaization of the occupied Palestinian and other Arab territories clashes with the pursuit of peace-He also called for an end to Israel’s “atrocious blockade” on Gaza and condemned the “Israeli aggression” against the Mavi Marmara, a ship that tried to break the naval blockade of Gaza. (Earlier that year, Israeli commandos had boarded the vessel and, coming under violent attack by Turkish activists armed with clubs and metal bars, killed 10 of them.)-That speech was delivered a long time ago. But even half a decade later, in 2015, the same Abdullah Bin Zayed — known as ABZ — told the General Assembly that the Palestinian issue “remains at the core of conflict in our region, and one of the main threats to its security and stability.”The “feelings of injustice and frustration resulting from the continued Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories and the flagrant human rights violations committed by the occupation forces, provide extremist groups with an opportunity to exploit these serious humanitarian conditions and to spread their radical thinking and incite frustrated youth to implement their destructive agenda,” he said at the time.-UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan getting ready to address the UN General Assembly, September 22, 2017 (Aliza Eliazarov/UN Photo)(Cia Pak/UN Photo)-In last year’s speech, he declared once more that the Palestinian plight remains the “central issue” of the Arab world.“Stability cannot be established in our region without reaching a just, lasting, and comprehensive solution that enables the Palestinian people to establish their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital,” he said at the 2019 General Assembly.“The violations committed by the occupying power against the Palestinians, including the creation of new ‘facts on the ground’ in Jerusalem, will enable extremist groups to exploit the suffering of the Palestinian people.”What a difference a year makes.

(SAUL LOEB / AFP)-Israel is still an “occupying power” and no Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital has come into being, but ABZ sounded very different on Tuesday — exactly two weeks after he signed the Israel-UAE peace agreement at the White House — when he delivered his (pre-recorded) statement at the UN.“The call for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the borders of 1967 with East Jerusalem as its capital, in line with the relevant international resolutions and the Arab and international consensus, will remain a firm demand,” he said.“My country has made persistent efforts using all available diplomatic channels to affirm our total rejection of the annexation of Palestinian territory, and we have warned of its impact on all parties and on the security of the region.”UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahyan addressing the UN General Assembly, September 29, 2020 (screen grab)-The “historic peace accord with Israel,” he continued, opened “broad prospects to achieve a comprehensive peace in the region. We hope this peace accord will provide the opportunity for the Palestinians and the Israelis to re-engage in negotiations to achieve peace.”In other words: We’re still in favor of a two-state solution, in principle, but temporarily halting Israel’s plan to unilaterally annex parts of the West Bank is enough for us right now. No word on Israeli violations. No mention of any occupation. Condemning settlement expansions? Lamenting Palestinian suffering? Bewailing the judaization of occupied Arab lands? Not anymore.‘Israel’s provocative acts enrage Muslims all over the world’Bahrain, too, has changed its tune quite dramatically in light of the Abraham Accords. We look forward to a halt to the oppression of Palestinians, the lifting of the blockade on Gaza and an end to the building of settlements so as to provide an environment conducive to the success of these solutions,” then-foreign minister Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa told the General Assembly in 2013. Israel should halt its repeated aggressions and provocative acts that enrage Muslims all over the world and impede the resumption of the peace process-He also expressed his “full support” of Abbas. “He is one of the best leaders ever produced by Palestine, and deserves our support in each step he undertakes toward the attainment of the desired peace.”Four years later, Al Khalifa reiterated that the Palestinian questions tops Bahrain’s foreign policy priorities. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict, he said, is “an issue of territorial occupation that must end.”“Rights confiscated must be returned to their owners and this precisely is what Israel, notwithstanding all its security concerns, should understand, for it will achieve peace for its people, and for itself, only when it abandons all forms of violence against Palestinians.”Bahraini FM Khalid Bin Ahmed Al-Khalifa addresses the UN General Assembly at UN Headquarters in New York, September 28, 2007 (Marco Castro/UN Photo)-Jerusalem, he added, should halt its settlement activities and “stop violating the sanctity of religious sites, especially what is happening in [Jerusalem’s] al-Aqsa mosque in the form of repeated aggressions and provocative acts that enrage Muslims all over the world and impede the resumption of the peace process and all supporting regional and international initiatives.”And at last year’s General Assembly, which took place after Bahrain hosted the rollout of the first part of the US administration’s two-pronged Mideast peace plan, Al Khalifa said the international community must force Israel “to stop its unjust annexation policies and violations of international law, which hinder all efforts aimed at reaching a just and sustainable solution to the Palestinian issue.”On Wednesday, King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, in his recorded speech to the UN,  called for “intensified efforts to end the Palestinian-Israeli conflict in accordance with the two-state solution” and urged the establishment of a Palestinian state on the 1967-lines with East Jerusalem as its capital. But he refrained from any attacks on Israel. Rather, he hailed his country’s normalization of ties with Israel as an “embodiment of our resolute approach to openness and coexistence with all.”

Jerusalem: He steered Kuwait 'to modernity and stability' Death of Kuwait ruler draws outpouring of tributes, from Israel to Iran-Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah’s demise elicits condolences from across a divided Middle East, where he is hailed as a bridge-builder-By AP and TOI staff-sep 30,20-Today, 8:45 am

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates  — The death of Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah, the leader of Kuwait who earned a reputation as a seasoned diplomat and a rare ruler who could cross the region’s political and sectarian divides, touched off an outpouring of grief from the Arab world Tuesday. As news of his death broke, condolence messages streamed in from across the region, including Israel, and from Western countries with longstanding ties to Kuwait, including the US and Britain. Several Arab governments declared days of mourning and lowered their flags to half-staff in his honor. As a member of the Gulf Cooperation Council, a regional body of Arab Gulf states, Kuwait has often charted its own course, pushing for diplomacy to resolve a bitter dispute between Qatar and other Arab states that continues to this day. Diplomats around the world eulogized Sheikh Sabah as an expert statesman who navigated regional feuds and provided humanitarian aid in times of crisis.Sheikh Sabah “was an extraordinary symbol of wisdom and generosity, a messenger of peace, a bridge-builder,” said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. From the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan offered an admiring tribute, describing the late emir as “a great pioneer in Gulf cooperation.”In Saudi Arabia, one of Kuwait’s closest allies, Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan said Sheikh Sabah “devoted his life to the service of his country and to Arab and Islamic nations,” a sentiment echoed by Bahrain, another close regional partner.Illustrative: A picture of Kuwait’s ruling emir, Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah, is displayed with surrounding Kuwaiti flags in Kuwait City, on February 14, 2018. (AP Photo/Jon Gambrell/File)-Such was Sheikh Sabah’s status that condolences poured in from Qatar and Iran, locked in long-running rivalries with Kuwait’s key Gulf allies, as well as from Israel, underscoring his reputation as a source of stability in a turbulent region. The emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, referred to Sheikh Sabah as the “father of all.”“With his departure, the world has lost a beacon and symbol of humanity,” he wrote.File: Kuwait’s emir, Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah, right, shakes hands with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani during a reception ceremony at the Saadabad Palace in Tehran, Iran, June 1, 2014 (AP/Ebrahim Noroozi, File)-Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif of Iran wrote on Twitter that he was “pained” by the loss of Sheikh Sabah, who “painted an image of moderation and balance, for Kuwait and for the region.”The Israeli Foreign Ministry lauded Sheikh Sabah for steering Kuwait “to modernity and stability.”Kuwaiti officials have recently rejected the possibility of normalizing ties with Israel, following the accords signed between Israel, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain. Earlier this month, US President Donald Trump predicted Kuwait would forge ties with Israel in the near future.Yemen’s Shiite Houthi rebels, who are battling a Saudi-led military coalition for control of the country, said they appreciated the late emir’s support of peace-making efforts.US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called Sheikh Sabah “central to building peace and prosperity in the Gulf region,” noting that his “humanitarianism and global leadership shaped Kuwait into a prosperous modern state.” From Britain, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Sheikh Sabah “made a personal contribution to regional stability and humanitarian assistance which will long be remembered.”“I sincerely hope the long and deep ties that unite our countries will continue,” he added. In September Trump awarded the Legion of Merit on Al Sabah, who played a central role in resolving a yearslong four-nation boycott of Qatar. In Lebanon, where the late Kuwaiti leader played a key role in trying to end the country’s ruinous 1975-90 civil war and later helped with its reconstruction, President Michel Aoun said his country had “lost a great brother who stood by the Lebanese during the difficult circumstances over the past years.”US President Donald Trumpm right, and Kuwait’s Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah take part in a bilateral meeting at a hotel in Riyadh, May 21, 2017. (AFP/MANDEL NGAN)-Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi praised the late emir’s long-standing “fraternal stance” toward Egypt, while Jordan’s royal court announced a 40-day mourning period nationwide. In Iraq, Kuwait’s northern neighbor, Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi recalled Sheikh Sabah as one of the first leaders to support Iraqi state-building efforts after the 2003 US-led invasion that toppled the regime of Saddam Hussein, and later in fighting the Islamic State group.Veteran UN diplomat Lakhdar Brahimi cited the friendly present-day relations between Kuwait and Iraq as proof of the late emir’s “wisdom and farsightedness” three decades after the Gulf War.s Kuwait’s Cabinet announced that Crown Prince Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Sabah would take the reins of power, many expressed hope that the tiny oil-rich country would follow the peacemaking path set by Sheikh Sabah.“The role that Kuwait traditionally plays in the Middle East as a bridge-builder is needed today more than ever,” said Ban Ki-moon, former UN secretary-general and deputy chair of The Elders, a group of world leaders.

Trump pledges to tap woman for court, pushes Senate to move fast on pick-The Times of IsraelUS president says he’ll nominate successor to Ginsburg before November 3 vote despite Democratic opposition: ‘We win an election and those are the consequences’ By Jonathan Lemire, LISA MASCARO and Steve Peoples-sep 20,20-Today, 1:19 am

WASHINGTON (AP) — US President Donald Trump on Saturday promised to put forth a female nominee in the coming week to fill the Supreme Court vacancy created by the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, pushing the Republican-controlled Senate to consider the pick without delay.Taking the stage at a North Carolina rally to chants of “Fill that seat,” the president said he would nominate his selection despite Democrats’ objections. And, after conducting what he joked was a “very scientific poll” of the Fayetteville crowd as to whether supporters wanted a man or a woman, he declared the choice would be “a very talented, very brilliant woman.”He added that he did not yet know whom he would choose.“We win an election and those are the consequences,” said the president, who then seemed to signal that he’d be willing to accept a vote on his nominee during the lame duck period after the election, should he lose. “We have a lot of time. We have plenty of time. We’re talking about January 20th.”

(AP Photo/Chris Carlson)-But one Republican senator already broke ranks. Maine’s Susan Collins, who is in a tough reelection battle, said Saturday that she believed replacing Ginsburg should be the decision of the president who is elected November 3. Three more defections from the GOP ranks would be needed to stop Trump’s nominee from joining the court. At stake is a seat held by a justice who was a champion of women’s rights and spent her final years on the bench as the unquestioned leader of the court’s liberal wing. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell vowed to call a vote for Trump’s nominee, but Democrats countered that Republicans should follow the precedent that GOP legislators set in 2016 by refusing to consider a Supreme Court choice in the run-up to an election.US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg leaves the stage after speaking to first-year students at Georgetown Law in Washington, September 26, 2018. (AP Photo/Jacquelyn Martin, File)The impending clash over the vacant seat — when to fill it and with whom — scrambles the stretch run of a presidential race for a nation already reeling from the pandemic that has killed nearly 200,000 people, left millions unemployed and heightened partisan tensions and anger.McConnell pledged to Trump in a phone call Friday night to bring the choice to a vote though he has not said if it would be before the election. Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden said any selection should come after November 3. “Voters should pick the president and the president should pick the justice to consider,” he said. The president this month added 20 more names to his roster of potential court nominees, and aides in recent days have focused on a short list heavy on female candidates, according to four White House aides and officials close to the process. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss private conversations. Those under close consideration for the high court include three women who are federal appeals court judges: Amy Coney Barrett, beloved among conservatives and an early favorite; Barbara Lagoa, who is Hispanic and comes from the battleground state of Florida; and Allison Jones Rushing, who clerked for Justice Clarence Thomas and for Neil Gorsuch, when the current Trump-appointed justice was an appeals court judge.McConnell, who sets the calendar in the Senate and has made judicial appointments his priority, declared unequivocally in a statement that Trump’s nominee would receive a confirmation vote. In 2016, McConnell refused to consider President Barack Obama’s nominee months before the election, eventually preventing a vote on Judge Merrick Garland.Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of New York convened a conference call with Democratic senators at midday Saturday, according to a person on the private call who was not authorized to discuss it publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. He told senators the “number one goal” must be to communicate the stakes of the confirmation vote.Schumer also warned that if Republicans push through the nominee, “nothing is off the table” for Senate rules changes to come, the person said.Ginsburg’s death led to a wave of mourning, including an informal memorial at the Supreme Court and a protest outside McConnell’s house. It also seemed certain to stoke enthusiasm in both political parties as the election could now be viewed as referendum on the high court’s decisions, including the future of abortion rights.Protesters rally outside the house of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in Louisville, Kentucky, September 19, 2020. (AP Photo/Timothy D. Easley)-Democrats raised more than $60 million in the hours after Ginsburg’s death, indicating her passing has already galvanized the party’s base.A confirmation vote in the Senate is not guaranteed, even with a Republican majority.McConnell has launched a risky, unprecedented strategy. It could motivate conservative voters to rally behind Trump and GOP senators or it could push away moderates who prefer to see the Senate stick to norms or are fearful of a right-leaning court stripping away women’s right to choose an abortion.Typically, it takes several months to vet and hold hearings on a Supreme Court nominee, and time is short before November. Key senators may be reluctant to cast votes so close to the election. With a slim GOP majority, 53 seats in the 100-member chamber, Trump’s choice could afford to lose only a few.McConnell did not specify the timing. But trying for confirmation in a lame-duck session after the November 3 election, if Trump had lost to Biden or Republicans had lost the Senate, would carry further political complications.Democrats immediate denounced McConnell’s move as hypocritical, pointing out that he refused to call hearings for Garland 237 days before the 2016 election. The 2020 election is 46 days away. The average number of days to confirm a justice, according to the Congressional Research Service, is 69, which would be after the election. But some Republicans quickly noted that Ginsburg was confirmed in just 42 days. Obama waited more than a month to nominate Garland after Justice Antonin Scalia died in February 2016.John Fischetti, who waited in line more than two hours to enter Trump’s Fayetteville rally, said replacing Ginsburg would inflame tensions but was within the president’s rights.“I would assume it would make everyone more energized,” Fischetti said of the political repercussions. “Trump’s people want him to always press forward.”Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska left, and Senator Susan Collins of Maine, walk together following a vote at the Capitol in Washington, February 12, 2020. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite)-Four GOP defections could defeat a nomination, while a tie vote could be broken by Vice President Mike Pence. After Collins’ decision, focus grew on Senators Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Mitt Romney of Utah, who have been critical of Trump and protective of the institution of the Senate. And because the Arizona Senate race is a special election, that seat could be filled as early as November 30 — which would narrow the window for McConnell if the Democratic candidate, Mark Kelly, wins. The next pick could shape important decisions beyond abortion rights, including any legal challenges that may stem from the 2020 election. In the interim, if the court were to take cases with eight justices, 4-4 ties would revert the decision to a lower court; for instance, the Affordable Care Act could then be struck down by a lower Texas court.Biden has promised to nominate a Black woman to the high court if given the chance. His campaign reiterated Saturday that it would release names before the election.

US to hit 200,000 dead; Trump sees no need for regret-The Times of Israel-sep 20,20-Analysis-US president says without his efforts things would be much worse: ‘We have done a phenomenal job with respect to COVID-19’By Julie Pace-sep 20,20-Today, 4:36 pm

WASHINGTON (AP) — As the coronavirus pandemic began bearing down on the United States in March, US President Donald Trump set out his expectations. If the US could keep the death toll between 100,000 to 200,000 people, Trump said, it would indicate that his administration had “done a very good job.”In the coming days, the number of US deaths is set to clear the outer band of the president’s projections: 200,000, according to the official tally, though the real number is certainly higher. The virus continues to spread and there is currently no approved vaccine. Some public health experts fear infections could spike this fall and winter, perhaps even doubling the death count by the end of the year.Yet the grim milestone and the prospect of more American deaths to come have prompted no rethinking from the president about his handling of the pandemic and no outward expressions of regrets. Instead, Trump has sought to reshape the significance of the death tally, trying to turn the loss of 200,000 Americans into a success story by contending the numbers could have been even higher without the actions of his administration.“If we didn’t do our job, it would be three and a half, two and a half, maybe 3 million people,” Trump said Friday, leaning on extreme projections of what could have happened if nothing at all were done to fight the pandemic. “We have done a phenomenal job with respect to COVID-19.”Trump’s reelection prospects will hinge in part on whether enough voters agree with that assessment. The challenge he faces in making his case, with just over six weeks before the Nov. 3 election and voting already underway in some states, is clear.Volunteers prepare donations for delivery to those affected by COVID-19 on tribal lands, June 25, 2020, in Tempe, Arizona. (AP/Matt York)-Just 39% of Americans approve of the president’s handling of the pandemic, according to a poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. Roughly one-quarter of Republicans say they don’t approve of Trump’s stewardship of the public health crisis, though his overall backing among GOP voters sits at a comfortable 84%.There’s also little doubt that the death toll in the US has soared past where Trump repeatedly assured the public it would be. In February, when the first coronavirus cases were detected in the US, the president said the numbers would be “down to close to zero” within days. In early April, when US officials estimated at least 100,000 people would die from the pandemic even if all conceivable steps were taken against it, Trump suggested the numbers would be lower, saying: “I think we’re doing better than that.”He’s shifted again in recent days, saying that the US remains a success story because some models showed the nation could have 240,000 deaths — a threshold that appears likely to be eclipsed by the end of the year.Well aware of his sluggish standing with voters on the pandemic, Trump has spent recent weeks trying to refocus his race against Democrat Joe Biden on other issues, including promising white suburban voters that he would keep crime in liberal cities from encroaching on their neighborhoods.A portrait of US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is displayed at a storefront on September 19, 2020, in New York, New York. (Jeenah Moon/Getty Images/AFP)-Trump will now campaign in particular on the courts, given Friday’s death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, seeking to lure back Republican voters who may have turned on him during the pandemic, with the promise of more conservatives on the high court.Though the Supreme Court vacancy does significantly jolt the White House race, Biden still wants to keep much of the focus on the coronavirus. He strengthened his standing through the summer by hammering what he calls the Trump administration’s failures to take the virus threat seriously and to provide consistent guidance to the public, including around the effectiveness of wearing face masks. After revelations in a new book from journalist Bob Woodward that Trump intentionally played down the seriousness of the virus earlier this year, Biden said of a president’s responsibilities: “You’ve got to level with the American people — shoot from the shoulder,” adding, “There’s not been a time they’ve not been able to step up.”Trump has insisted he wasn’t downplaying the severity of the virus when he compared it with the seasonal flu and undercut public health officials who pushed for more stringent mitigation efforts. Yet he’s repeatedly flouted his own administration’s safety guidelines, rarely wearing a mask himself and holding large campaign events with little evidence of social distancing among his crowds.US President Donald Trump arrives to speak at a rally at Xtreme Manufacturing, September 13, 2020, in Henderson, Nevada (AP Photo/Andrew Harnik)-With the death toll continuing to climb, Trump has also repeatedly passed up opportunities to serve as a unifying force for communities and families grieving the loss of loved ones. Instead, he’s effectively discounted the deaths of Americans who live in Democratic-leaning states, suggesting he has little responsibility for the well-being of those who don’t support him politically.“If you take the blue states out, we’re at a level that I don’t think anybody in the world would be at,” Trump said this past week about the death toll. “Some of the states, they were blue states and blue state-managed.”It was a jarring statement from an American president, yet one in keeping with Trump’s handling of the pandemic and his presidency. He’s long taken a transactional approach to his office, and he spent the opening weeks of the pandemic feuding with Democratic governors in hard-hit states, challenging them to lift restrictions that he deemed harmful to the strong economy he’d hoped to ride to a second term.“He sees everything, including the implications of this terrible virus, in terms of his own political and personal success — ‘How does it affect me and my electability and my popularity,’” said Margaret Susan Thompson, a professor of history and political science at Syracuse University. The question looming over his presidency now, as Americans mourn 200,000 lives lost, is what the effects of his handling of the pandemic will be on his political future. The answer will come soon enough from his fellow Americans.

Rosh Hashanah'People long for a more enchanted connection to time'-ing in 5781 with Jewish calendar that puts an artistic spin on time-The Misaviv Hebrew Circle Calendar ventures out of the box with its round format, celebrating a mystical concept that incorporates seasonal and life cycles, nature and femininity-By Madison Margolin-sep 20,20-Today, 1:53 pm

LOS ANGELES — A recent study in The Journal of Neuroscience confirms what we’ve long suspected — time flies when you’re having fun (or at least, having new experiences). Likewise, in times of at-home quarantine, it can feel as if it’s creeping along. But long before the discovery of neurons, Jewish mystics had looked to the Hebrew lunar calendar to tap into time’s cyclical attributes.“People have become very aware this year that time can flow in different ways,” says Jorian Polis Schutz, creator and publisher of the Misaviv Hebrew Circle Calendar.Misaviv is an out-of-the-box visual representation of the Hebrew calendar. Each month is illustrated by an interpretive painting commissioned by a contemporary Jewish artist. Today it’s largely found in the homes of an in-the-know few who belong to more creative circles. Now, as Rosh Hashanah rolls back around and people brace themselves for the new Hebrew year 5781, the calendar is again gaining mainstream relevance.“It’s far from a corporate product — it’s very heimish,” says Schutz, using a Yiddish term that approximately translates to homegrown. “And on a sociological front, I think it’s some sort of sign that there are more people who are interested in creative takes on Jewish time than ever before. It’s a new demographic.Jorian Polis Schutz, creator and publisher of the Misaviv Hebrew Circle Calendar. (Courtesy)-Traditional calendars, both Gregorian and Hebrew, are boxy and rigid. A circular calendar, Schutz contends, displays “an idea of wholeness” that rectangular calendars lack. The circular Misaviv calendar is symbolic and meaningful, he says. It reflects the cycles of nature — that is, seasons and phases of the moon — and projects a more feminine resonance.“A lot of people are longing for a more enchanted connection to time,” Schutz says. “And Judaism is all about that.”The Hebrew calendar is based upon the lunar cycle, with holidays often falling on the full moon. Some main holidays — Passover and the High Holy Days, for example — can be thought of as being on opposite sides of the year; the days of the week, as well, fall concentrically around a Sabbath focal point.“One of the things the calendar is doing is getting you into a rhythm,” says Schutz. Not to mention, he adds, “the Torah makes the argument for spiral-based time” — a combination of circular and linearThe concept of “spiral time” appears in many Jewish mystical practices.“Spiral time means we’re progressively moving forward and upward, but hitting the same points we hit in the year before,” explains Rabbi DovBer Pinson, head of the IYYUN Center for Jewish Spirituality in Brooklyn, New York, and author of many books, including “The Spiral of Time: Unraveling the Yearly Cycle.”Artist’s rendering of the month of Shvat for the Misaviv calendar 5781. (Courtesy/ Melina Monteagudo) “Every year we experience the same seasons as we cycle through the pattern of the year, but we’re also spiraling higher and higher,” Pinson says.Rabbi DovBer Pinson of the IYYUN Center for Jewish Spirituality. (Courtesy)-On the Misaviv calendar, the days of the week are shown as a series of concentric circles, similar to the rings of a tree. Sundays are the outermost circle, then Mondays, and so on, with Shabbat the central point on the page.“Shabbos is a day to come from or go toward,” says Pinson. “So in that paradigm of time, Shabbos is the center, and the week flows in and out of Shabbos.”The Jewish names for the days of the week reflect this. Instead of being named for planets, the days are numbered according to where they fall in relation to the Sabbath. Sunday is “Yom Rishon B’Shabbat,” or Day One towards the Sabbath, while Friday is “Yom Shishi B’Shabbat,” or Day Six towards the Sabbath-Sunday through Tuesday are seen as the days after the Sabbath, Pinson explains, whereas Wednesday through Friday are those leading up to the Sabbath. And the Sabbath itself is the sacred pinnacle of the week — or as scholar Abraham Joshua Heschel put it a “palace in time.” It’s outside of and distinct from our mundane experience the rest of the week, meaning that time flows and feels differently on the Sabbath, a day of stillness and being in the present.Artist’s rendering of the month of Kislev for the Misaviv calendar 5781. (Courtesy/ Jenia Vasilenko-Feeling outside time and being very much in the present moment allows people to get into “the best state of mind you can be in,” says Marc Wittmann, research fellow at the Institute for Frontier Areas of Psychology and Mental Health in Freiburg, Germany, and author of “Felt Time: The Psychology of How We Perceive Time.”Wittmann notes that cycles or repetition can help us escape an unhealthy attachment to time, from ruminating on the past or being anxious about the future. Whether it’s repetitive shamanistic drumming or the repetition of seasons, cycles are liberating because they help mitigate our hyper-awareness of self and time.Artist’s rendering of the month of Nisan for the Misaviv calendar 5781. (Courtesy/ Federico Parolo)-As the most prevalent cycle of the Jewish calendar, “Shabbat is both the destination and culmination of our weeks — as well as the springboard to the next,” says Schutz. The Circle Calendar is formatted to show this, with the Sabbath both at the month’s center and fully around its rim.“On Shabbat we are enveloped in spaciousness and delight, and we are re-ensouled,” Schultz writes in the introduction to this year’s calendar. “Make [Shabbat] your portal to an all-embracing, all-encompassing outer rim, and you have learned to use Misaviv 5781.”

Already, Emirati and Israeli banks and research firms have rushed to sign agreements. Also on Thursday, Emirates Flight Catering, which supplies meals to Emirates Airlines and over 100 others, said it would establish a facility dedicated to making certified kosher food at its UAE headquarters, with production due to start in January.

Leaked docs: Arab Bank was involved in potential terrorist financing until 2016-Despite settling a lawsuit with terror victims in 2015, Amman-based bank continued to transfer money to entities with suspected links to terrorist groups, documents show-By Uri Blau in partnership with Shomrim-SEP 20,20-Today, 8:00 pm

A massive leak of financial intelligence reports reveals that Arab Bank facilitated payments to organizations and bodies suspected to be connected to terrorism, even after the Jordan-based bank had agreed to pay massive amounts in compensation to terror victims. The information appears in a confidential financial intelligence report compiled by a British bank named Standard Chartered Bank (SCB), which served as a correspondent bank for Arab Bank. SCB suspected that Arab Bank continued to transfer money to “entities with suspected links to terrorist groups” until 2016, the year the report was filed. The Arab Bank, which operates from Amman, is one of the largest banks in the Arab world. In 2004, Arab Bank was sued in the United States by American victims of terror attacks carried out in Israel. The plaintiffs claimed that the bank had carried out wire transfers to various entities linked to Hamas and had thus been a party to terror financing. The trial itself opened a decade later, in 2014. After six weeks the jury decided in favor of the plaintiffs. The Arab Bank HQ in Amman, Jordan, in 2010 (Jean pierre x / Wikipedia)-The bank appealed the verdict but at the same time entered into settlement negotiations. The details of the settlement that was ultimately reached remain confidential, but according to Israeli media reports the bank agreed to compensate the plaintiffs for about $1 billion. In 2018, the bank won its appeal on the basis of the claim that the judge had given incorrect instructions to the jury prior to the trial. While the jury verdict was voided, the settlement remained in effect. The Park Hotel in Netanya on the night of March 27, 2002, after a suicide bombing killed 30 people. (Flash90)-At the end of 2019, another lawsuit was filed against the bank by more than 1,000 terror victims and their families. This lawsuit was filed by Israeli citizens in Jerusalem District Court. The complaint mentions a long list of terror attacks, including the March 2002 Passover suicide bombing at the Park Hotel in Netanya (in which 30 civilians were killed in the worst such attack of the Second Intifada), the June 2001 Dolphinarium discotheque attack in Tel Aviv (in which 21 Israelis, most of them teenagers, were killed), and the August 2001 suicide bombing at the Sbarro restaurant in Jerusalem (in which 15 civilians were killed)-Inscription at the site of the June 2001 Dolphinarium suicide bombing, in which 21 Israelis were killed (Photo: Avi1111 dr. avishai teicher /Wikipedia)-Now, a massive leak of classified financial reports submitted by banks all over the world to the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network of the US Treasury Department (FinCen), has revealed that the British bank continued to work with the Jordanian bank during the years of the lawsuit and afterwards, and that some of the bank transfers that passed through the British bank raised its suspicions. The financial reports, which were submitted to the US Congress as part of the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 elections, were leaked to the Buzzfeed news site, which in turn shared them with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, and through them with 400 journalists from 108 media outlets around the world.(ICIJ’s Israeli partners are Uri Blau, the author of this article, and Shomrim, the Center for Media and Democracy, which made it available to The Times of Israel.)-Standard Chartered Bank HQ in London (Cobaltblue25 / Wikipedia)-The Arab Bank was a client of Standard Chartered Bank for 25 years. The British bank served as a correspondent bank for, and executed wire transfers on behalf of, the Arab Bank.Reports that SCB submitted to FinCen reveal that between 2013 and 2014, years after the filing of the US lawsuit, the Arab Bank carried out over 2000 bank transactions, totaling about $24 million, that raised SCB’s suspicions as being intended for organizations and bodies connected to terrorism. At the beginning of 2016, SCB submitted another report describing 910 new wire transfers totaling more than $11 million that struck the bank as suspicious. The last group of transfers were carried out through February 1, 2016 — in other words, over a period of about a year and a half after the US trial against the Arab Bank had begun and ended. Many of these transfers were categorized as intended for “donations,” “charity,” “support,” or “gifts.” SCB reported its concerns that these transfers were in fact illegal payments in disguise, and that many of the transfers had been carried out by people whose identity it was not possible to verify.SCB said in its report that these discoveries had caused it to stop working with the Arab Bank.It is important to emphasize that the act of submitting reports to the US government is not sufficient to determine that any illicit activity took place, and that it is possible that the transfers were legal and that their pattern of execution happened to raise the suspicions of the reporting bank.In a statement, Arab Bank told ICIJ it “abhors terrorism and does not support or encourage terrorist activities.” The bank said that allegations against it date back nearly 20 years to a time when anti-money-laundering laws, tools and technologies were different than they are now.“In every country where it operates, Arab Bank is in good standing with government regulators and complies with anti-terrorism and money laundering laws,” the bank said. The 2005 US regulatory limits against the bank were formally lifted in 2018.Standard Chartered told the BBC, a partner of ICIJ, that it “initiated account closure” in connection to Arab Bank shortly after the jury verdict. “This process can take time in some cases,” the bank said, “but in all cases the bank continues to fulfill its regulatory obligations” while exiting accounts.Arab Bank noted it “enjoys a longstanding relationship with Standard Chartered” that “continues today.”Standard Chartered no longer processes US dollar transactions for Arab Bank, but it still provides other banking services for the Jordanian financial institution, Arab Bank told ICIJ.
Thousands of suspicious activity reports leaked-The documents reached reporters as part of an unprecedented leak of financial intelligence reports that were submitted to the US Treasury Department. The leak also includes reports on Israeli businessmen, companies and banks. These financial intelligence reports, known as suspicious activity reports, document suspicious economic activities that may be linked to money laundering and/or terrorism financing.Financial Crimes Enforcement Network logo-Financial institutions all over the world are required to submit such reports to the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network of the US Treasury Department. That is why this leak has been dubbed the FinCen files.FinCen is responsible for gathering information on suspicious financial activity that could turn out to be money laundering or terror financing. FinCen’s Israeli counterpart is the Israel Money Laundering and Terror Financing Prevention Authority in the Ministry of Justice. The leaked reports were among thousands of documents that were submitted to the US Congress as part of the investigation into suspicions of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential elections. They were leaked to the US-based website Buzzfeed, which shared them with the ICIJ and through the ICIJ with more than 400 journalists from 108 media outlets around the world, including NBC in the United States, the BBC in the UK, Le Monde in France, L’Espresso in Italy, WDR and NDR in Germany and many others.Buzzfeed did not reveal the source of the documents but in January of this year a former FinCen employee, Natalie Mayflower Edwards, pleaded guilty to “conspiring to unlawfully disclose suspicious activity reports.”The complaint filed against Edwards, a Virginia resident in her 40s, mentioned that twelve news articles were published as a result of her leak. She is expected to be sentenced in October. This article was written in collaboration with Shomrim, the Center for Media and Democracy

March of 100,000 defy police crackdown to mark week 7 of Belarus protests-Demonstrators met with hundreds of soldiers deploying water cannons, armored personnel carriers and erecting barbed wire barriers; dozens said arrested-By YURAS KARMANAU-sep 20,20-Today, 7:08 pm

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Tens of thousands of Belarusians calling for the authoritarian president to resign marched through the capital Sunday as the country’s wave of protests entered its seventh week.Hundreds of soldiers blocked off the center of Minsk, deploying water cannons and armored personnel carriers and erecting barbed wire barriers. Protests also took place in several other cities, including Brest and Grodno. The crowd in Minsk included about 100,000 people, said Ales Bialiatski, head of the Viasna human rights organization. He said dozens of demonstrators were arrested in Minsk and Grodno.Protests began Aug. 9 after an election that official results say gave President Alexander Lukashenko a sixth term in office; opponents and some poll workers say the results were manipulated.Lukashenko, who has repressed opposition and independent news media during 26 years in power, has rejected suggestions of dialogue with the protesters. Many members of the Coordination Council that was formed by the opposition to push for a transition of power have been arrested or have fled the country.Protesters with old Belarusian national flags march during an opposition rally to protest the official presidential election results in Minsk, Belarus, September 20, 2020. (AP Photo/TUT.by)-The Minsk demonstrators carried the red-and-white flags that were independent Belarus’ national standard before being replaced in 1995, early in Lukashenko’s tenure. Some bore placards depicting Lukashenko as a mustachioed cockroach.Although protests have taken place daily since the election, the Sunday gatherings in Minsk have been by far the largest, attracting crowds of as many as 200,000 people.“Every Sunday, you are showing yourselves and the world that the Belarusian people are the power,” Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, who was Lukashenko’s main election opponent, said in a video message from Lithuania, where she is in exile.

(AP Photo/TUT.by)The marchers also carried portraits of Maria Kolsenikova, a top opposition figure who has been jailed for two weeks and is facing charges of undermining state security that could bring a five-year prison term. Kolesnikova has said security forces drove her to the border with Ukraine to try to make her leave the country, but that she tore up her passport so she couldn’t cross the border. In a statement relayed by her lawyer on Sunday, Kolsenikova urged protesters to continue.“Freedom is worth fighting for. Do not be afraid to be free,” she said. “I do not regret anything and would do the same again.”Also Sunday, Interior Ministry spokeswoman Olga Chemodanova said an investigation has been opened into the release by hackers of the personal information of more than 1,000 employees of the ministry, which runs the police forces.

Maximum pressure... has turned into maximum isolation'-Iran’s Rouhani warns of ‘crushing response’ to US sanctions declaration at UN-Tehran says Trump administration ‘isolated’ after other world powers reject American assertion that sanctions on Islamic Republic are back in force-By TOI staff and Agencies-sep 20,20-Today, 5:14 pm

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Sunday warned the US it faces defeat after the Trump administration declared that UN sanctions are back in force against the Islamic Republic, a move rejected by other world powers.“America is approaching a certain defeat in its sanctions move … It faced defeat and negative response from the international community. We will never yield to US pressure and Iran will give a crushing response to America’s bullying,” Rouhani said during a televised cabinet meeting, according to Reuters. He added: “America’s maximum pressure against Iran, in its political and legal aspects, has turned into America’s maximum isolation.”Rouhani’s remarks echoed those of Iran’s foreign ministry-“The United States is very, very isolated in its claims,” ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said. “The whole world is saying nothing has changed.”The comments came after the Trump administration announced the so-called “snapback” of the sanctions was in effect and threatened to “impose consequences” on any UN member state that fails to comply. The sanctions in question were lifted in 2015 when Iran and six world powers — Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the US — reached a landmark nuclear deal known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. But US President Donald Trump withdrew from the JCPOA in 2018, saying the deal — negotiated by his predecessor Barack Obama — was insufficient. He also renewed and even strengthened Washington’s own sanctions. The US insists it is still a participant in the agreement that it stormed out of, but only so it can activate the snapback option, which it announced on August 20.Virtually every other Security Council member disputes Washington’s ability to execute this legal pirouette, and the UN body has not taken the measure any further.Members of the Security Council vote at United Nations headquarters on the landmark nuclear deal between Iran and six world powers, July 20, 2015. (AP/Seth Wenig, File)-On Sunday, two permanent council members — France and Britain — issued a joint statement along with non-permanent member Germany saying the US’s “purported notification” was “incapable of having any legal effect.”Russia also said the US lacked legal authority.“The illegitimate initiatives and actions of the United States by definition cannot have international legal consequences for other countries,” said its foreign ministry.‘Reckless actions’Iran brushed off the move and called on the rest of the world to unite against what it called the US’s “reckless actions”.“This is all much ado about nothing, and I imagine these are the most bitter days and hours for” the United States, said Khatibzadeh.“Tehran’s message for Washington is clear. Return to the international community, to your commitments, stop rebelling and the world will accept you..US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced Washington’s latest move in a statement on Saturday evening.“Today, the United States welcomes the return of virtually all previously terminated UN sanctions on the Islamic Republic of Iran,” he said.Pompeo promised measures would be announced in the coming days against “violators” of the sanctions to ensure that “Iran does not reap the benefits of UN-prohibited activity.”US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo speaks to reporters following a meeting with members of the UN Security Council, with US Ambassador to the UN Kelly Craft, left, and US Special Representative for Iran Brian Hook, right, at the United Nations, August 20, 2020. (Mike Segar/Pool via AP)-With around six weeks to go until the November 3 US election, Trump could unveil those measures in a speech at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday.Iran issued a stark warning if the US follows through with the measures.“If the United States acts on these threats, directly, or with the cooperation of a handful of its puppets, it will face a serious response and be responsible for all the dangerous consequences,” its foreign ministry said.It added that Washington, by leaving the nuclear deal, has “explicitly denied itself of any rights” to use the mechanisms in agreement and UN Resolution 2231, which enshrined the nuclear accord.‘Nothing worse’In mid-August, the US suffered a resounding defeat at the Security Council when it tried to extend the embargo on conventional weapons being sent to Tehran, which was due to expire in October.Pompeo responded with an unusually vehement attack on Britain, France and Germany, accusing them of “siding with Iran’s ayatollahs” before announcing the snapback. The Trump administration, however, is acting as if the international sanctions are in place, while the rest of the international community acts as if nothing has changed.Washington is hammering home that the arms embargo has been extended “indefinitely” and that many activities related to Tehran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs are now subject to international sanctions.

Iran’s currency was at 32,000 rials to the dollar at the time of Tehran’s nuclear deal with world powers.

Whether sanctions are reimposed or not, we are living with utmost difficulty,” said Leila Zanganeh, a martial arts instructor.Danial Namei, an architect, seemed to care little for returning UN sanctions and doubted things could get worse.“We’ve been through difficult things and it is still ongoing. There’s nothing worse than the worst, after all,” he said.

(Office of the Iranian Supreme Leader via AP)-American intelligence reports indicate Iran has avoided strong military action against the US — despite an intense pressure campaign by Washington that has included tightening sanctions and rumored attacks on its installations — because it believes restraint will help prevent President Donald Trump’s reelection in November, according to a New York Times report. The newspaper cited several American officials and US allies who were briefed on the intel reports. It said Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei is hoping for a less antagonistic US administration come January, but believes a significant conflict between the countries will bolster Trump’s odds of holding on to the presidency. The report said the Iranians believe a July explosion that damaged one of its nuclear sites in Natanz, and which foreign media reports have attributed to Israel or the US, was intended to provoke a response that would justify military strikes on the Islamic Republic. It also said that while Khamenei has forbidden serious military action, he has allowed extensive cyber activity and hacking attempts against US targets. Last week Microsoft said Iranian hackers have engaged in attacks on personal accounts of those associated with Trump and his campaign, in an effort to influence the 2020 election, though it said its security tools stopped most of the attempts.US President Donald Trump speaks at the signing ceremony of the Abraham Accords on the South Lawn of the White House September 15, 2020 in Washington, DC. (Alex Wong/Getty Images/AFP)-On Saturday Iran’s Revolutionary Guards chief said Tehran will avenge the US killing of its top commander General Qassem Soleimani in January by targeting only those involved, in an “honorable” retaliation. The guard’s website quoted Gen. Hossein Salami as saying, “Mr. Trump! Our revenge for martyrdom of our great general is obvious, serious and real.”Trump warned this week that Washington would harshly respond to any Iranian attempts to take revenge for the death of Soleimani, tweeting that “if they hit us in any way, any form, written instructions already done we’re going to hit them 1000 times harder.”The president’s warning came in response to a report that Iran was plotting to assassinate the US ambassador to South Africa in retaliation for Soleimani’s killing at Baghdad’s airport at the beginning of the year.Salami rejected the report of an Iranian plot to assassinate Ambassador Lana Marks, but made clear that Iran intends to avenge the general’s death.“Do you think we hit a female ambassador in return to our martyred brother?” the general said. “We will hit those who had direct and indirect roles. You should know that everybody who had a role in the event will be hit, and this is a serious message. We do prove everything in practice.”Senior Revolutionary Guard commander General Qassem Soleimani attends a meeting with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei (not seen) and Revolutionary Guard commanders in Tehran, Iran, September 18, 2016. (Office of the Iranian Supreme Leader via AP)-In January, Iran launched a ballistic missile attack targeting US soldiers in Iraq in response to the fatal drone strike.Trump has stepped up economic pressure on Iran with sanctions since he pulled the United States out of Iran’s nuclear deal with world powers in 2018.Tehran has continued to expand its stockpile of enriched uranium and pressured other nations to offset the harm of US sanctions, while insisting it does not want to develop a nuclear weapon.
On Saturday night the United States unilaterally proclaimed that UN sanctions against Iran were back in force and promised to punish those who violate them. However Washington is almost alone on the issue: all the other great powers — China, Russia and also the US’s own European allies — have challenged the claim.

Bahrain said to foil Iran-backed terror attacks on diplomats and foreigners-Saudi state TV says plot was revenge for the US killing of Iranian general Qassem Soleimani; report comes days after Manama signs normalization deal with Israel-By Jon Gambrell-sep 20,20-Today, 10:33 pm

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Bahrain broke up a plot by militants backed by Iran to launch attacks on diplomats and foreigners in the island nation home to the US Navy’s 5th Fleet, just days after normalizing relations with Israel, Saudi state television and local media on the island reported Sunday.Bahrain’s Interior Ministry and its state media did not immediately acknowledge the arrests. Bahraini government officials, who routinely claim breaking up plots by militants backed by Iran, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Saudi state TV report aired footage of what appeared to be police raiding a home with a hidden passage. The footage showed assault rifles and explosives, apparently seized in the raid. A Saudi state TV reporter said those planning the attacks wanted to carry them out in revenge for the US killing of Iranian general Qassem Soleimani this January in a drone strike in Baghdad.Nine militants have been arrested, while another nine are believed to be in Iran, the Saudi state TV report said.Revolutionary Guard general Qassem Soleimani, center, attends a meeting with Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and Revolutionary Guard commanders in Tehran, Iran, Sept. 18, 2016. (Office of the Iranian Supreme Leader via AP)-Iranian state media acknowledged the reports of the Bahraini arrests, but no official commented on them.Authorities uncovered the plot after finding an explosive on the street, the pro-government Bahraini newspaper Akhbar Al-Khaleej reported, citing the Interior Ministry. The ministry accused Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard of supporting the militants, who also had surveilled oil sites and military bases, the newspaper said. The militants also planned on assassinating bodyguards of Bahraini officials, the newspaper said.It wasn’t clear when the arrests took place, as the Akhbar Al-Khaleej report referred to incidents dating as far back as 2017. The newspaper linked the militants to the al-Ashtar Brigade, a Shiite group has claimed responsibility for a number of bombings and attacks in Bahrain, including two that killed police. The group has been sanctioned by the US-Bahrain is home to the 5th Fleet, which patrols the waterways of the Mideast. Officials have worried in the past that the sailors and Marines attached to the base in Manama could be targeted, as well as others who make up the 7,000 American troops there. Cmdr. Rebecca Rebarich, a spokeswoman for the 5th Fleet, declined to comment and referred questions to the Bahraini government.Bahrain, an island kingdom off the coast of Saudi Arabia, just last week normalized relations with Israel alongside the United Arab Emirates. (SAUL LOEB / AFP)-Bahrain’s Shiite majority long has accused its Sunni rulers of treating them like second-class citizens. They joined pro-democracy activists in demanding more political freedoms in 2011, as Arab Spring protests swept the wider Middle East. Saudi and Emirati troops ultimately helped violently put down the demonstrations.Bahrain promised change after the protests. But since April 2016, Bahrain has engaged in a new crackdown on dissent, overturning reforms that blocked civilians from being tried in military courts. It has shut down political parties, arrested political activists and forced others into exile. Militant groups like the al-Ashtar Brigade have launched small, sporadic attacks amid that crackdown.

Iran, Russia pan ‘illegitimate, reckless’ US claim UN sanctions back in force-Tehran’s rial drops to new low as Moscow says Washington’s ‘theatrics don’t correspond to reality’; White House isolated in its unilateral assertion measures have snapped back-By Agencies-sep 20,20-Today, 10:50 am

Iran on Sunday called on the rest of the world to unite against US “reckless actions,” after Washington unilaterally declared UN sanctions against the Islamic republic were back in force.Meanwhile the the local currency dropped down to its lowest level ever on Sunday, at 272,500 to the US dollar at money exchange shops across Tehran. The rial has lost more than 30 percent of its value to the dollar since June as sweeping US sanctions on Iran continue to crush its ability to sell oil globally. Iran’s currency was at 32,000 rials to the dollar at the time of Tehran’s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, which was signed by the Obama administration but which the Trump administration pulled the US from.“We expect the international community and all the countries in the world to stand against these reckless actions by the regime in the White House and speak in one voice,” foreign ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh told a news conference in Tehran. The Iranian government spokesman said the snapback sanctions have only happened in “the fantastical world” of the Trump administration. He said the US stands on the wrong side of history. “They are attempting to make everyone believe it, but nobody is buying it except for themselves.“It is a television show whose sole presenter, viewers and those cheering it on are Mr. Pompeo himself and a handful of others,” the spokesman said, referring to the US secretary of state. He added that “the United States is very, very isolated in its claims. The whole world is saying nothing has changed.”The Russian foreign ministry also condemned the unilateral declaration by the United States as “illegitimate” and “unacceptable.”“The illegitimate initiatives and actions of the United States by definition cannot have international legal consequences for other countries,” the foreign ministry said in a statement.Russia, a key ally of Iran, accused Washington of putting on a “theatrical performance” and insisted that the US statements “do not correspond to reality. It accused the US of “trying to force everyone to wear virtual reality goggles” and accept its version of events, adding: “The world is not an American computer game.”Washington’s defiance has dealt a “serious blow to the authority of the UN Security Council” and showed “open contempt for its decisions and for international law as a whole,” the ministry said. “This is unacceptable, and not only for us, but for other members of the Security Council too.”Russia said it “fully supports” the position of the majority of Security Council members that the US moves are “legally and procedurally null and void.”The United States unilaterally proclaimed on Saturday that UN sanctions against Iran were back in force and promised to punish those who violate them, in a move that risked increasing Washington’s isolation and international tensions.“Today, the United States welcomes the return of virtually all previously terminated UN sanctions on the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement.According to him, the measures were “back in effect” from 8:00 p.m. Washington time. The administration of US President Donald Trump also promised to “impose consequences” on any UN member state which does not comply with the sanctions, even though the United States is one of the only countries in the world which believes they are in force.US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo speaks during a joint statement to the press with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after their meeting, in Jerusalem, August 24, 2020. (Debbie Hill/Pool via AP)-The threat is formidable: those deemed to be in defiance by Washington will be denied access to the US financial system and markets.“If UN member states fail to fulfill their obligations to implement these sanctions, the United States is prepared to use our domestic authorities to impose consequences for those failures and ensure that Iran does not reap the benefits of UN-prohibited activity,” Pompeo stated. He promised that measures would be announced in the coming days against “violators.”With 45 days to go until the November 3 election, Trump could unveil those measures during his speech at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday. However, the US is almost alone on the issue: all other major powers — China, Russia and also Washington’s own European allies — have challenged the claim.“Any decision or action taken with a view to re-installing [the sanctions] would be incapable of legal effect,” France, Britain and Germany said in a joint letter sent Friday to the Security Council and of which AFP obtained a copy.In this photo released by the official website of the office of the Iranian Presidency, President Hassan Rouhani, right, welcomes Director General of International Atomic Energy Agency, IAEA, Rafael Mariano Grossi for their meeting in Tehran, Iran, Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2020 (Iranian Presidency Office via AP)-The Americans themselves realize the statement is a “false claim,” Iranian foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Saturday. In mid-August, the US suffered a resounding defeat at the UN Security Council when it tried to extend the embargo on conventional weapons being sent to Tehran, which was due to expire in October.Pompeo made an unusually vehement attack on France, Britain and Germany, accusing them of “siding with Iran’s ayatollahs,” and on August 20 announced the controversial “snapback,” which aimed to reestablish all sanctions against Tehran a month later. The sanctions were lifted in 2015 when Iran signed on to an international agreement not to seek to build nuclear weapons. But Trump said that the landmark accord, negotiated by his predecessor Barack Obama, was insufficient and withdrew the US from the agreement in 2018. He then renewed and even strengthened Washington’s bilateral sanctions.US President Donald Trump speaks with reporters as he walks to Marine One on the South Lawn of the White House, Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2020, in Washington. Trump is en route to Philadelphia. (AP Photo/Alex Brandon)-At the moment, the US is insisting it is still a participant in the agreement that it stormed out of, but only so that it can activate the snapback option.Virtually every other member of the Security Council disputes Washington’s ability to execute this legal pirouette, and the council has not taken the measure any further. The Trump administration, however, is acting as if the international sanctions are in place, while the rest of the international community continues to act as if nothing has changed.Washington is hammering home that the arms embargo has been extended “indefinitely” and that many activities related to Tehran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs are now subject to international sanctions. But “I don’t see anything happening,” said one UN diplomat. “It would be just a statement. It’s like pulling a trigger and no bullet coming out.”Another diplomat deplored the “unilateral” US act, saying that “Russia and China are sitting, happy, eating popcorn, watching” the “huge destabilizing fallout” between Washington and its European partners. But if the United States were to carry out the threat of secondary. sanctions, tensions could continue to spiral.

16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.
18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.

US, UAE said holding ‘decisive’ meeting with Sudan over Israel normalization-Report says Khartoum asking for billions in economic assistance in return for agreement with Jerusalem; if demands met, announcement could come within days-By TOI staff and Jacob Magid-SEP 20,20-Today, 8:37 pm

Sudanese officials are holding a “decisive” meeting with counterparts from the US and UAE over signing a normalization deal with Israel, the Walla news site reported Sunday.Sudan has been among a number of countries touted as possibly inking a deal with Israel, following the diplomatic move made by the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain on Tuesday.According to the report, which was also published in English on the Axios website, Sudan is asking for a wide-reaching economic support package, and if an agreement is reached, could announce a deal with Israel in the coming days.Sudan is reportedly asking for oil and wheat shipments worth $1.2 billion to cope with recent devastating floods, a $2 billion grant to deal with Sudan’s economic crisis and a commitment of economic support from the US and the UAE over the next three years.A man wades through a flooded road in the town of Shaqilab, about 15 miles (25 km) southwest of the capital, Khartoum, Sudan, Monday, Aug. 31, 2020. (AP Photo/Marwan Ali)-According to the report, the US is being represented at the talks by White House National Security Council’s senior director for the Gulf and North Africa, Gen. Miguel Correa. The UAE is being represented by national security adviser Tahnoon Bin Zayed.Israeli officials have long expressed a wish for better relations with Khartoum, citing its importance in the region as well as its geographic location. The nation was the birthplace of the Arab League’s 1967 policy refusing negotiations or normalization with Israel, but in recent years it has seemingly softened its stance, moving out of Iran’s sphere of influence as it has desperately sought the removal of US sanctions as a supporter of Hamas, Hezbollah and other terror groups. However, removal from the terrorism list is also dependent on completion of a compensation agreement for victims of the 1998 bombings of the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. A tentative deal struck several months ago still awaits finalization.Sudanese Foreign Ministry spokesman Haidar Badawi Sadiq was fired on August 19, 2020, a day after expressing support for peace with Israel. (YouTube screenshot)-In August, Sudan’s foreign ministry spokesman, Haidar Badawi Sadiq, told Sky News Arabia that Khartoum “aspires towards a peace agreement with Israel… a relationship of equals built upon Khartoum’s interests.”Those remarks were quickly welcomed by Jerusalem. But hours later Sudan’s acting foreign minister denied knowledge of peace talks with Israel, and said Sadiq had not been authorized to comment on the issue. The spokesman was fired for the comments, but said afterward that he did not regret making them. The foreign ministers of the UAE and Bahrain signed the so-called Abraham Accords in a White House ceremony with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday. The only Arab states Israel previously had official ties with were Egypt and Jordan. The agreements do not address the decades-long Israeli-Palestinian conflict. While the UAE, Bahrain and other Arab countries support the Palestinians, the Trump administration has persuaded the two countries not to let that conflict keep them from having normal relations with Israel.Numerous Arab states have been named as potential candidates to follow the UAE and Bahrain in agreeing to establish ties with Israel, including Morocco, Sudan and Oman.US President Donald Trump, center, with from left, Bahrain Foreign Minister Abdullatif al-Zayani, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and United Arab Emirates Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahyan, during the Abraham Accords signing ceremony on the South Lawn of the White House, September 15, 2020, in Washington. (Alex Brandon/AP)On Friday, US President Donald Trump, after meeting with the son of Kuwait’s ruling emir, said that the country will likely normalize relations with Israel in the near future. The Kuwaitis “are so excited that we signed the first two countries and I think they’ll end up fairly quickly being a part of it,” Trump said at a White House press briefing after he bestowed a top honor on Kuwait’s Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah, which his eldest son accepted on his behalf.Trump reiterated his claim that a number of Arab states were eager to ink deals with Israel following the historic accords with the UAE and Bahrain.“I have, I would say, seven or eight countries that want to be a part of it,” Trump said. “Nobody thought this would happen and not only is it happening, it’s happening rather easily.”“I had two calls this morning with countries that want to know, ‘When can we go into the deal?’ It’s not that we’re giving them anything. They want security, they want peace, and they’re really tired of fighting,” Trump said.He acknowledged that he had only discussed the issue “very briefly” with the visiting Kuwaiti sheikh before adding that the “whole thing is now a beautiful puzzle that’s coming together nicely. The Middle East is straightening out with all that’s happening.”Last month, unnamed senior Kuwaiti officials rejected the possibility of normalizing ties with Israel, telling the local al-Qabas newspaper that despite warming ties between the Gulf states and Jerusalem, it had no interest in changing its longstanding regional policies.Regional heavyweight Saudi Arabia meanwhile has remained non-committal, reiterating its support for the Arab Peace Initiative, a Saudi-backed proposal from 2002 that promises Israel full diplomatic ties with the entire Muslim world in exchange for the establishment of a Palestinian state based on the 1967 border lines. The Saudi Arabian royal family is reportedly split over possible future ties with Israel following landmark agreements with the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday.According to the report, King Salman bin Abdulaziz has come into conflict with his son, de facto leader crown prince Mohammed bin Salman, with the latter said to be in favor of the move.Qatar’s ambassador to the US said on Wednesday that his nation, which is located in the Gulf but frequently at odds with its neighbors, has no problem normalizing relations with Israel, but will not do so before a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is reached. Qatar is a frequent interlocutor between Israel and the Hamas terror group.Trump said after Tuesday’s signing ceremony that he expected “seven or eight or nine” more countries to normalize ties with Israel, including Saudi Arabia.

Top Fatah official talks of ‘Zionist territorial designs from Nile to Euphrates’-Railing against Israel’s peace deals with UAE and Bahrain, Azzam Al-Ahmad claims Palestinians are defending all Arab nations from Israel’s expansion plots-By TOI staff-sep 20,20-Today, 10:14 am

A senior Palestinian official has said the Palestinian people protect Arab nations from “the Zionist territorial designs from the Nile to the Euphrates.”Speaking last week in criticism of the decision by the United Arab Emirates to normalize ties with Israel, Fatah Central Committee Member Azzam Al-Ahmad told Qatar’s Al-Araby TV: “We hope that the people [of the UAE and Bahrain] will restrain [their leaders] and make them reconsider what they have signed. Do not destroy yourselves and the future of the entire Arab nation.”His comments were provided and translated over the weekend by the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI).He explained: “We the Palestinians are defending all of you — we are defending Mecca, Baghdad, Cairo, Amman and Damascus. This is our destiny as Palestinians.Fatah Central Committee Member Azzam Al-Ahmad: The Palestinians Defend the Entire Arab Nation from the Zionist Designs to Expand from the Nile to the Euphrates pic.twitter.com/rxWSQwngf— MEMRI (@MEMRIReports) September 18, 2020-“We are the sentinels in Jerusalem who defend it against the Zionist territorial designs from the Nile to the Euphrates.”Al-Ahmad vowed to “continue to serve as the spearhead in the confrontation against the American administration and the Zionist movement. We… will continue to persevere and fight. We have been fighting for over 100 years in defense of the Arab nation and the Islamic and Christian holy sites.”The Palestinian Authority has lambasted the deal, accusing Gulf states of betrayal and of a “stab in the back” of Palestinians.A coalition representing a wide swath of Palestinian factions — including both Fatah and Hamas — called for a “day of Intifada-like rejection” of the normalization deal on Tuesday. In response, several sporadic demonstrations were held across the West Bank and Gaza, each numbering a few hundred. The Palestinians have found themselves increasingly isolated in their efforts to cut Israel off from the Arab world.
The PA was unable to muster much support during a summit of the 22-member Arab League earlier in the month, with Arab foreign ministers failing to back a Palestinian push to the normalization deal.
