Macron: If Trump pulls out of Iran deal ‘it could mean war’-French president tells German media that withdrawing from nuclear accord would 'open a Pandora's box'-By TOI staff-MAY 7,18

French President Emmanuel Macron said Saturday that a decision by US President Donald Trump to withdraw from the Iranian nuclear deal could spark a war.Macron told the German daily Der Speigel that the worst-case scenario would be for Trump to withdraw fully from the deal. “That would mean opening Pandora’s box, it could mean war,” he said, adding, “I don’t believe that Donald Trump wants war.”Two weeks ago Macron made a three-day state visit to Washington primarily to convince Trump to stay in the 2015 deal, negotiated between Tehran and six world powers and considered the signature foreign policy legacy of Trump’s predecessor Barack Obama.Trump has set a May 12 deadline to “fix or nix” the deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, and has repeatedly threatened to pull out of it. The agreement imposes strict restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program in return for the loosening of economic sanctions.Macron argued that the pact presents the only viable option available to the international community to curb Tehran’s nuclear ambitions.Besides agreeing to submit to snap inspections, Iran also cut the number of centrifuges used for enriching uranium and reduced its stockpiles of the material, in return for the loosening of economic sanctions. In January, Trump gave Congress and European allies an ultimatum to either amend the pact to his liking or stand by as he renewed sanctions against Tehran.Britain, France and Germany — the three European countries that signed the deal — have repeatedly tried to persuade Trump not to abandon it.Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Sunday that if the United States quits the nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers Washington would regret it.“If the United States leaves the nuclear agreement, you will soon see that they will regret it like never before in history,” Rouhani said in a televised speech in northwestern Iran.Agencies contributed to this report.

IDF says it killed two terrorists infiltrating from Gaza-Army reports forces opened fire at three men trying to cross fence from Palestinian enclave-By Stuart Winer-MAY 7,18-TOI

IDF soldiers shot dead two Palestinian men along the Gaza Strip border on Sunday, saying it thwarted a terrorist infiltration attempt by the two and by a third man.“A short while ago an IDF unit opened fire at three terrorists who tried to cross the security barrier from the southern Strip toward [Israeli] territory, and to damage security infrastructure in the area of the fence,” the IDF said in a statement. “Two of the terrorists were killed.”There army did not say whether the third man had also been hit or captured. The Hamas-run Health Ministry in Gaza confirmed that two Palestinians had been killed. The incident came amid tensions along the security fence in recent weeks, with the Palestinians holding mass marches near the border, and in some cases rioting.Israel says the violence is being orchestrated by Gaza’s Hamas leaders, whom it accuses of trying to carry out border attacks under the cover of large protests, which it has dubbed the “March of Return.”Overnight Saturday Israeli military aircraft struck a Hamas site in the northern Gaza Strip used as a launching pad for incendiary kites, the military said Sunday. For the past several weeks, Gazans have been regularly flying kites outfitted with containers of burning fuel, often including charcoal and bags of sugar to ensure a long, slow burn. The incendiaries have started large blazes in crop fields on the Israeli side of the border, causing tens of thousands of dollars in damage.Earlier Saturday, a large blast rocked the central Gaza Strip, killing at least six members of Hamas’s Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades military wing, the terror group said.It blamed Israel for the explosion, claiming it was caused by an Israeli espionage device that self-destructed after being discovered.Palestinian media, by contrast, said it was a “work accident,” meaning that the terrorists were killed by their own explosives.Friday saw the sixth week of demonstrations as part of the “March of Return.” At least 431 Palestinians were injured, Gaza officials said, as some 7,000 took part in the demonstrations, flew dozens of kites with petrol bombs into Israel, hurled stones at soldiers and tried to breach the border fence. There were no Palestinian deaths reported on Friday, unlike in previous weeks.According to the Hamas health ministry, 48 Palestinians have been killed since protests and clashes began along the Gaza border on March 30 and hundreds of others have been wounded from gunfire. Several of those dead have been identified by Israel as members of terror groups. Hamas acknowledged that five of those killed on the first Friday of protests in March were its members, but has since refrained for such admissions.

Hamas claims 6 gunmen were killed by exploding Israeli spy system, vows revenge-Terror group vows to 'settle the score' after members of armed wing died in blast Saturday; Palestinian media called it a 'work accident'; Israel says it had nothing to do with it-By TOI staff-MAY 7,18

The military wing of Hamas on Sunday said an explosion that killed six of its men was caused by an Israeli espionage device that self-destructed after being discovered. The large explosion that rocked the central Gaza Strip Saturday night had initially been blamed in Palestinian media reports on a so-called “work accident.”The Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of the Hamas terror group, said the explosion had been triggered when a “technological espionage system” planted by Israel was opened. The terrorist group said it held Israel directly responsible for the incident and that the country would “pay dearly” for its actions.Scene of explosion in Central #Gaza Strip. 4 Palestinians killed. Lebanese line up for vote billed as Riyadh-Tehran battle-Prime Minister Saad Hariri expected to retain control but Hezbollah and its allies are likely to add more seats-By Agencies-TOI-MAY 7,18

Tens of thousands of Lebanese began casting their ballots Sunday in the first parliamentary elections in nine years, with people lining up early in the morning to take part in a vote that is being fiercely contested between rival groups backed by regional powers. The voting is unlikely to change the existing balance of power among the major groups in Lebanon, but many hope new contenders from civil society groups can challenge the decades-old sectarian political system. The election comes after a drawn-out political stalemate finally produced a new electoral law in 2017 that introduced a proportional list-based system. Voters will choose one list of allied candidates, as well as a preferred candidate from among them. In the past, the winning list took all the seats in the electoral district. The campaign passed without major incident but security forces were out en masse across a country still sporadically rocked by attacks and with a history of political assassinations. Electoral campaigns have been tense as each group has mobilized its supporters, with fistfights and shootings occurring in several areas in recent weeks. The main race is between a Western and Saudi-backed coalition headed by Prime Minister Saad Hariri and the Iranian-backed Hezbollah group, part of a region-wide struggle for power between Riyadh and Tehran.“This shows Lebanon’s democracy and the importance of democracy. This is a democratic wedding, and as we said from the start, congratulations to whoever wins tonight,” said Interior Minister Nouhad Machnouk, who is running on Hariri’s list, after casting his ballot in Beirut. As Hariri entered a public school to vote, a woman in a wheelchair complained that polling stations were not equipped for disabled voters.“We are human beings. It is not fair that we have to be carried like bags of potatoes,” the woman, Silvana Lakkis, said. The prime minister promised to address the problem in the next elections.“When we see what is happening in countries around us and Lebanon is holding democratic elections, this shows that Lebanon is fine,” Hariri said after waiting in line around 20 minutes to cast his ballot. “Order is nice,” he quipped. The vote is the first since Syria’s war broke out in 2011, sending a flood of around million refugees to neighboring Lebanon and adding to the country’s economic woes.Hezbollah has sent thousands of fighters to back President Bashar Assad’s forces, a move that has been criticized by many Lebanese, mainly Sunni Muslims and Christians, who see the group as dragging the country into regional conflicts.Leading Hezbollah legislator Ali Ammar defended his group’s involvement in Syria, saying it protected Lebanon from the “evil powers” of the Islamic State group and al-Qaida.In Hezbollah strongholds in southern Beirut, there was a steady flow of voters Sunday. Outside polling stations, Hezbollah supporters displayed a replica of the voting ballot on a big board and explained to voters which among the color-coded lists is theirs, and how they can vote for it. They wore yellow shirts with the slogan “We protect and build” written on them.“We love the resistance,” said Amira Sidani, an 85-year-old woman, after casting her ballot. At midday, after casting his ballot in southern Beirut, President Michel Aoun described the process as “successful.” Wary of voters’ apathy toward a vote unlikely to change much, he urged people to turn out in large numbers.Mohammed Ali, 30, riding his scooter to the beach, said he’s not voting because there are no choices. He says his family members will vote for whoever pays them, but he’s not interested in the money. The legislature’s term was supposed to expire in 2013, but lawmakers have approved several extensions since then, citing security concerns linked to the spillover from Syria’s war. Lebanese who support opposing sides in the war have clashed on a number of occasions, and Sunni extremists have carried out several bombings. There are about 3.6 million eligible voters, and early results are expected after polling stations close at 7 p.m. (1600 GMT). Some 586 candidates, including 86 women, are running for the 128-seat parliament, which is equally divided between Muslims and Christians.Hezbollah and its allies are likely to add more seats, while Hariri is likely to lose several. Some of his Sunni supporters see him as being too soft on Hezbollah, and the billionaire businessman has also faced criticism after laying off scores of employees from his companies in Lebanon and Saudi Arabia.Still, Hariri will most likely be named to form a national unity Cabinet after the vote. The rival sides are expected to recreate the unity government that currently exists, which includes Hezbollah. The vote comes a week after Lebanese living oversees voted in 39 countries around the world. It was the first time Lebanon’s large expatriate community was allowed to take part in the vote. That, along with the new electoral law, has injected some unpredictability to the process.

Netanyahu: Conflict with Iran better now than later-Prime minister says Israel will do whatever it takes to prevent Iranian entrenchment in Syria; stresses importance of his upcoming meeting with Putin-By Stuart Winer and TOI staff-MAY 7,18

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday that while Israel is not interested in a military escalation with Iran, if there has to be a fight he would prefer it be now rather than later. The comments came amid escalating tensions between Jerusalem and Tehran as the Islamic Republic has sought to expand its foothold in neighboring Syria, raising fears it could use bases for attacking Israel.“We are determined to block the Iranian entrenchment, even at the cost of confrontation,” Netanyahu said at the start of his government’s weekly cabinet meeting. “We don’t want an escalation, but we are prepared for every scenario. We don’t want confrontation, but if there needs to be one, it is better now than later.”His comments came a week after a strike on an Iranian base in Syria, attributed to Israel, which reportedly destroyed hundreds of surface-to-surface missiles and killed over 30 people, including many Iranian military officials. Iran denied that any of its soldiers were killed in the attacks and that any of its bases in Syria were targeted.Netanyahu also highlighted the importance of his upcoming meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, scheduled for Wednesday.Russia is a key backer of Syrian President Bashar Assad, along with Iran, and has raised concerns over reported Israeli bombing runs in Syria. Moscow has signaled it may sell Damascus advanced air defense systems in response.“My meetings with the Russian president are always important for the IDF and the country, but the meeting this week is especially important in light of the attempts by Iran to establish itself in Syria,” Netanyahu said. The two leaders also spoke in early April with Putin urging Netanyahu to avoid any steps that could increase instability in Syria. The talks will also come just days before the May 12 deadline in which US President Donald Trump will decide on whether or not to pull out of the Iran nuclear deal. Russia, a signatory, has called for the pact to remain in place, though Netanyahu has lobbied for it to be annulled or renegotiated.Netanyahu was scheduled to give a press conference later Sunday to foreign media about some 100,000 Iranian files and documents describing the Tehran’s past efforts to develop atomic weapons.Netanyahu revealed last week the contents of the documents, which were spirited out of Iran by Israeli spies and, he said at the time, showed that Iranian leaders had lied about their country’s nuclear ambitions.Netanyahu has frequently spoken with Putin as Israel seeks to get Moscow to use its influence to halt Iran’s attempts to spread its influence deep into Syria and Lebanon on Israel’s northern border. They last met for talks in January.Tehran has sent some 80,000 Iran-backed fighters to back Syrian President Bashar Assad’s forces in the country’s seven-year civil war, Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon said last week.Israel has said Iranian military entrenchment in Syria was unacceptable, fearing that Tehran could use the country as a springboard for attacks against the Jewish state.American and Israeli officials have been monitoring the situation as Iran has increased the number of transport planes it has been sending from its Mehrabad Airport in Tehran to Syria. The US and Israeli officials fear that these planes are loaded with advanced munitions, which could potentially be used against Israel.Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman has repeatedly vowed that Israel would work to prevent this from occurring, “no matter the cost.”The base hit in the airstrike last week, south of the city of Hama in northwestern Syria, belonged to the Syrian army’s 47th Brigade but has reportedly been used as a headquarters for Iranian troops for several years. The recent attack came amid soaring tensions between Iran and Israel following an airstrike last month on Syria’s T4 air base in the central province of Homs that killed seven Iranian military personnel. Tehran has vowed to retaliate for the T4 attack. Syria, Iran, and Russia blamed Israel for that T4 attack. Israel did not confirm or deny it.

Iran’s Rouhani warns US it will ‘regret’ pulling out of nuclear deal-Supreme leader says country's atomic energy organization has been given directives on how to respond if Washington withdraws from agreement-By AFP and TOI staff-MAY 7,18

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Sunday that if the United States quits the nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers Washington would regret it “like never before.”The Trump administration is fast approaching a self-imposed deadline on whether or not to leave the deal if it is not altered to place further restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program to prevent the country from obtaining nuclear weapons.“If the United States leaves the nuclear agreement, you will soon see that they will regret it like never before in history,” Rouhani said in a televised speech in northwestern Iran.He also said Iran had plans in place to respond to anything the US might do.“Necessary directives have been given to related organizations and the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran,” should the US go ahead with its threat to withdraw, he said.Iran has warned in the past it could quickly restart its nuclear program should the US pull out of the accord.US President Donald Trump has set a May 12 deadline to “fix or nix” the deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. The agreement imposes strict restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program in return for the loosening of economic sanctions. In January, Trump gave Congress and European allies an ultimatum to either amend the pact to his liking or stand by as he renewed sanctions against Tehran.Britain, France and Germany — the three European countries that signed the deal — have repeatedly tried to persuade Trump not to abandon it. The other two signatories are Russia and China who both back Iran in maintaining the agreement.Trump has pilloried the agreement designed to curb Iran’s nuclear program as “insane” and “ridiculous” and called for fresh measures to counter Iran’s ballistic missile program and support for militant groups across the Middle East.Iran has repeatedly insisted it is sticking to the nuclear deal and will not negotiate further over its missile program.Last week, an Israeli satellite imaging company released images showing what it described as “unusual” movement around the Iranian Fordo nuclear facility, a one-time uranium enrichment plant buried deep underground that was converted to a research center as part of the 2015 nuclear deal. The photographs, which show large numbers of vehicles at the entrance to the facility and other signs of increased activity there, did not in themselves indicate any violation of the nuclear accord. However, some have read the increased activity as an attempt by the Islamic Republic to imply that it is prepared to begin enriching uranium at the site if the US pulls out of the agreement.

In first, Israeli planes bomb Hamas post in response to Gazan ‘attack kites’-Army says site had been used to launch 'burning incendiaries' into Israel, stresses no connection to blast in Strip killing 6 the same day-By TOI staff-MAY 7,18

Israeli military aircraft struck a Hamas site in the northern Gaza Strip used as a launching pad for incendiary kites Saturday night, the military said Sunday. For the past several weeks, Gazans have been regularly flying kites outfitted with containers of burning fuel, often including charcoal and bags of sugar to ensure a long, slow burn. The attack was in response to “terrorists launching burning incendiaries in an attempt to a cause fire in Israeli territory,” an army spokesperson said. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties in Palestinian media. The army said the Hamas site was located next to the fence separating Israel from the Gaza Strip, which has been the scene of several weeks of violent confrontations over the past weeks. This was the first known case of the army striking a Hamas site in response to the kite firebombs, dozens of which have been launched in recent weeks. The kite tactic was introduced as part of the weekly “March of Return” demonstrations at the border fence, which began on March 30 and are due to continue through mid-May.Palestinians flew a burning kite into Israel Friday morning, starting a blaze close to Kibbutz Kissufim. On Wednesday a fire kite flown from Gaza sparked a large blaze in fields in southern Israel that spread through dozens of acres of grasslands and agricultural fields, authorities said, the largest fire yet since the first use of these kites.“The IDF will continue to operate against terror activity above and below ground, and holds the Hamas terror organization responsible for all terror activities in the Gaza strip,” an army statement Sunday said. The move comes after several Israeli reports that the army was considering ramping up its response to the kites, including targeting those launching them with lethal force. The army specifically noted Sunday that there was “no connection whatsoever” between the strike and a large blast rocked the central Gaza Strip on Saturday, killing at least six members of Hamas’s military wing, according to the terror group. The Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, said the fatalities were its members. It blamed Israel for the explosion, without providing details or proof.Palestinian media, by contrast, said it was a “work accident” — that is, that the terrorists were killed by their own explosives. The incident occurred during a “complex security and intelligence operation,” the brigades said in a statement, calling it “serious and large security incident” and blaming the “Zionist enemy.”Last month four Islamic Jihad members were killed in an accidental explosion near the Gaza Strip border with Israel.Scene of explosion in Central #Gaza Strip. 4 Palestinians killed. This is being reported as an ‘accidental explosion’ which usually involves members of Islamic resistance groups. pic.twitter.com/hdzxF6vnPh— Joe (@Jtruzmah) May 5, 2018-The group said in a statement that the four died during “preparations,” without giving further details. Army Radio reported that the terrorists were killed while carrying explosives in an all-terrain vehicle, suggesting the blast may have been a “work accident.” AFP said they were riding a tuk tuk vehicle, or auto-rickshaw, which exploded a few hundred meters from the border with Israel.

Fearing assassinations, Hamas boosts security around leaders — report-Terror group concerned over possibility of attempts on lives of Ismail Haniyeh and other top officials, according to Arab daily-By Stuart Winer-TOI-MAY 7,18

The Hamas terror group has increased security around its top figures in the Gaza Strip amid fears they might be assassinated by rival groups within the Palestinian enclave.Security around Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh and others was boosted after information indicated that attempts might be made on their lives, the pan-Arab daily Asharq Al-Awsat reported Sunday. The past several months have seen attempted assassinations of visiting Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah and the head of the Hamas security operation Tawfik Abu Naim.A March 13 attack targeted a convoy in which Hamdallah and the PA’s intelligence chief, Majed Faraj, were traveling. Neither Hamdallah nor Faraj were hurt in the blast, though 10 security guards and staff accompanying the two, who were in non-armored vehicles, were lightly wounded.Hamas later claimed the PA had orchestrated the entire episode to end efforts at reconciliation between the two groups, which have been deeply divided ever since Hamas violently seized control of Gaza from the Ramallah-based PA in 2007. The PA in turn said Hamas was responsible.Hamas has also accused the PA officers who ostensibly masterminded the attack on Hamdallah’s convoy of being behind an attempt on the life of Hamas’s security chief Abu Naim in October.Hamas maintains that it killed the main suspect in the attempt to assassinate Hamdallah, Anas Abu Khoussa, a week after the attack, along with one of Abu Khoussa’s aides. Two Hamas police officers were killed in a shootout, the group said. The Palestinian Authority has dismissed Hamas’s claims to have killed the main suspect, saying its story was “flimsy.”The episodes have served to further fray ties between the Palestinian groups.Several rounds of efforts to reconcile Hamas and the PA, which is dominated by the Fatah party, have failed.Hamas has recently organized several weeks of Friday protests along the Israeli-Gazan border leading to deadly clashes with Israeli security forces.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

THE FIRST JUDGEMENT OF THE EARTH STARTED WITH WATER-IT ONLY MAKES SENSE THE LAST GENERATION WILL BE HAVING FLOODING
GENESIS 7:6-12
6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.
8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,
9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.
10 And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.
GOD PROMISED BY A RAINBOW-THE EARTH WOULD NEVER BE DESTROYED TOTALLY WITH A FLOOD AGAIN.BUT FLOODIING IS A SIGN OF JUDGEMENT.

Some calming of Hawaii volcano, but scientists remain wary-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-May 6, 2018

PAHOA, Hawaii — The number of homes destroyed by lava shooting out of openings in the ground created by Hawaii's Kilauea volcano climbed to five as some of the more than 1,700 people who evacuated prepared for the possibility they may not return for quite some time."I have no idea how soon we can get back," said Todd Corrigan, who left his home in Leilani Estates with his wife on Friday as lava burst through the ground three or four blocks from their home. They spent the night on the beach in their car and began looking for a vacation rental. The Hawaiian Volcanoes Observatory said eight vents, each several hundred yards (meters) long, opened in the neighbourhood since Thursday. By late Saturday the fissures had quieted down and were only releasing steam and gas.Scientists said Kilauea was likely to release more lava through additional vents, but they were unable to predict exactly where. Leilani Estates, a subdivision in the mostly rural district of Puna, is at greatest risk. Authorities ordered more than 1,700 residents to evacuate from there and nearby Lanipuna Gardens.Hundreds of small earthquakes continued to rumble through the area Saturday, one day after a magnitude-6.9 temblor hit — the largest earthquake to hit Hawaii in more than 40 years. Magma moving through Kilauea set off the earthquakes, said geologists, who warned of aftershocks.Authorities cautioned sulfuric gas pouring out of the vents also posed dangers, particularly to elderly and people with respiratory problems. Hawaii County spokeswoman Kanani Aton said some residents may be allowed to return home briefly to pick up medicine or take care of pets if sulfur dioxide levels drop as a result of the calming vents.Tesha "Mirah" Montoya, 45, said the threat of toxic fumes wasn't enough to make her family evacuate, but the tipping point was the earthquakes."I felt like the whole side of our hill was going to explode," she said. "The earthquake was what made us start running and start throwing guinea pigs and bunnies in the car."Montoya, her husband and daughter don't know how long they will be away from the three-story octagonal house they built nearly 20 years ago in a patch of "raw jungle.""My heart and soul's there," she said in a phone interview from a cabin on the north side of the Big Island, where the family had hunkered down. "I'm nothing without the land. It's part of my being."Gary McMillan said his home is about 3,000 feet (914 metres ) from one of the fissures in Leilani Estates. He monitored remote cameras set up in his home and said his home was still intact. He's living out of his van with his wife at the nearby community centre and constantly thinks about things they left behind, but understands why authorities evacuated residents."I was a critical care nurse for 37 years, so I understand the health implications and the dangers involved," McMillan said.Kilauea has been continuously erupting since 1983 and is one of the world's most active volcanoes. In 2014, lava burned a house and smothered a cemetery as it approached Pahoa, the town closest to Leilani Estates. But this flow stalled just before it reached Pahoa's main road.Nearly 30 years ago, lava slowly covered an entire town, Kalapana, over the period of about a year.___Associated Press photographer Marco Garcia in Pahoa, Hawaii; Jennifer Sinco Kelleher and Sophia Yan in Honolulu; Mark Thiessen in Anchorage, Alaska, and Gillian Flaccus in Portland, Oregon, contributed to this report.Caleb Jones And Audrey McAvoy, The Associated Press.

Fewer than 4,200 customers still without power in Toronto in wake of windstorm-[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-May 6, 2018

Fewer than 4,200 customers are still without power Sunday following a windstorm that brought down large trees across the city on Friday, Toronto Hydro says."These remaining customers are a result of outages that are more local and specific in nature," Toronto Hydro said in a news release early Sunday."This part of restoration always takes the longest." The utility said it expects to have the majority of customers restored by sometime during the day on Sunday. In cases where the storm damaged equipment owned by customers, restoration may take longer, Toronto Hydro said.About 68,000 customers were without power at the peak of the storm, which swept through the city late Friday afternoon. At least two deaths in the GTA have been blamed on the storm.'Scary' winds captured on video-High winds uprooted trees, which in turn brought down power lines and poles, or landed on cars, garages and houses.Wind gusts also blew shingles off roofs, sent debris flying around, spun cranes around and damaged traffic lights. Condos reportedly swayed as they were hit by winds of near hurricane strength.Large boxes slid across a runway at Toronto's Pearson International Airport, prompting ground crew to run out of the way.Toronto residents have begun tweeting videos of what they saw and experienced as winds of more than 100 km/hr whipped through neighbourhoods.

Flood waters in New Brunswick raise concerns for health and safety-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-May 6, 2018

SAINT JOHN, N.B. — Flood waters continue to rise in southern New Brunswick, and so do concerns for health and safety.Kevin Clifford, the director of Emergency Management for Saint John, said water levels in the city were expected to peak around 5.9 metres today — or about 1.7 metres above flood stage. He cautioned people about being in contact with the flood waters."Certainly people understand the water looks different. It looks brown and it's certainly contaminated with a whole host of things," he said. The provincial Emergency Measures Organization issued warnings for people who have private well water supplies affected by flooding, saying they should not be used until they have been disinfected and tested."If you think that your well may be affected by chemicals such as furnace oil, gasoline or agricultural chemicals, you should not use water from the well for any purpose whatsoever – even if it has been boiled," the warning reads. In the town of Rothesay, officials cautioned residents that the sanitary and storm sewer systems are full because of the flooding."There is no capacity to receive more fluid so sewer backups are very likely if you use your plumbing (and maybe even if you don't)," their statement reads."The Town sewer system works on gravity and flows to the lagoons for treatment. The lagoons have flooded and are overflowing into the river. As the water level rises, there is a potential for backup into the pipes. Your downstream neighbours will appreciate your restricted use until flood waters recede."Rising waters on Saturday cut off routes to the community of Chipman, and the four-lane Trans-Canada highway between Fredericton and Moncton remains closed due to flooding.Emergency officials have repeatedly urged residents in flooded areas to evacuate their homes, but many are staying put — using sandbags and pumps to protect their properties.Premier Brian Gallant filled sandbags in the community of Quispamsis Saturday, while Fisheries and Oceans Minister Dominic LeBlanc surveyed the flood zone by helicopter. The New Brunswick MP later said the level of the water and the amount of damage was unprecedented. The Coast Guard deployed boats and staff to help with evacuations and patrols.About 360 households, consisting of roughly 850 people, have registered with the Red Cross, however, not all of them have evacuated. The flooding is also affecting wildlife, with deer and moose seen on roadways and spotted grazing in residential areas. The Canadian Press.

Moderate to severe drought grips southern Manitoba-[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-May 5, 2018

A dry winter exacerbated by a drier spring has left a wide swath of southern Manitoba in a state of moderate to severe drought, with much of the rest of the province classified as "abnormally dry," according to Environment Canada. Most of southern Manitoba is currently classified as being in a D1, or moderate drought, which Environment Canada calls "an event that occurs every five to 10 years." The agency uses a five-class system to rank the severity of drought. However, large portions of southern Manitoba, including areas south of Winnipeg and south of Brandon, as well as a large patch north of Selkirk to Lake Manitoba, are seeing D2, or severe drought, conditions. Severe drought happens every 10 to 20 years, Environment Canada says.Precipitation was extremely sparse for the month of April in Manitoba. For Winnipeg, this past April was the driest since 1988 and the fourth driest since records were first kept in 1872, said Environment Canada meteorologist Justin Share.Winnipeg received just 1.7 millimetres of rain last month, while the city normally gets an average of 19.2 mm in April. The driest April recorded was in 1980, when only trace amounts of rain were observed in Winnipeg. Tied in second place are 1987 and 1988, when only 0.8 mm of rain fell. There is little chance of rain for the next week — Environment Canada calls for a 40 per cent chance of showers in and around Winnipeg on Tuesday, but little else. The Brandon area may fare better, with periods of rain forecast Monday night into Tuesday morning. Temperatures will hover around the 20 C mark for daily highs.Large dry areas combined with wicked winds have led to numerous early-season grass fires and burn bans throughout the southern half of the province. Some of those grass fires burned homes. The City of Winnipeg implemented a burn ban for the entire city on Wednesday, including fire pits, bonfires, burning crop residue, disposing of wood or warning fires. The drought extends through the Prairies to much of southern Saskatchewan, and to parts of Ontario.

Iraqi air strike targets Islamic State position in Syria: PM-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-May 7, 2018

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - The Iraqi air force carried out a new strike on an Islamic State position inside Syria, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi's office said in a statement on Sunday. The strike targeted a position used by the commanders of the group, south of the town of Deshaisha, the statement said. "The position was completely destroyed," it said. The Iraqi air force has already carried out several air strikes against IS in Syria since last year, with the approval of the Syrian government of President Bashar al-Assad and the U.S.-led coalition fighting Islamic State.Abadi last month said he would "take all necessary measures if they threaten the security of Iraq," referring to the militants who just three years ago overran a third of Iraq. The prime minister declared final victory over the ultra hardline group in December but it still poses a threat from pockets along the border with Syria and has continued to carry out ambushes, assassinations and bombings across Iraq.Iraq has good relations with Iran and Russia, Assad's main backers in the seven-year-old Syrian civil war, while also enjoying strong support from the U.S.-led coalition.(Reporting by Maher Chmaytelli; Editing by Adrian Croft and Elaine Hardcastle)
