constitute a dramatic blow to the Israeli economy, Finance Minister Yair
Lapid warned on Wednesday, in an address at the Institute for National
Security Studies conference.Based
on an evaluation prepared by the Finance Ministry’s chief economist,
Lapid said that even a low-scale boycott would “hit every Israeli
citizen directly in his pocket.” The cost of living would rise, and
education, security, health, and welfare budgets would be slashed, he
said.Furthermore, exports would face a loss of NIS
20 billion ($5.7 billion), GDP would likely be lowered by NIS 11 billion
a year, and 9,800 workers would be laid off immediately.“We must recognize that if the talks fail —
and the world will believe they failed because of us — there will be a

Trade Minister Naftali Bennett Tuesday that a Palestinian state would be

the damage from any economic boycott, Intelligence Minister Yuval
Steinitz said Thursday, downplaying fresh warnings that the country’s
economy would be badly hurt if US-led peace talks with the Palestinians
fail.Israel

said his office is preparing a campaign “against the boycotts and
delegitimization of Israel” but did not elaborate.
He also insisted that an “erroneous” deal that
compromises Israel’s security would do more economic damage than
international opprobrium.The comments reflect how boycott concerns have
become central to Israel’s public discourse, as a small but growing
number of European businesses have limited trade recently with Israeli
firms involved in West Bank settlements.Finance Minister Yair Lapid, who has
repeatedly found himself in public spats with Steinitz during his time
in office, said Wednesday that Israel would become increasingly isolated
and lose markets in Europe if it failed to strike an agreement with the
Palestinians.Based on an evaluation prepared by the Finance
Ministry’s chief economist, Lapid said that even a low-scale boycott
would “hit every Israeli citizen directly in his pocket.” The cost of
living would rise, and education, security, health, and welfare budgets
would be slashed, he said.Furthermore, exports would face a loss of NIS
20 billion ($5.7 billion), GDP would likely be lowered by NIS 11 billion
a year, and 9,800 workers would be laid off immediately.According to World Bank figures, Israel’s GDP was NIS 902 billion in 2011 ($258.2 billion).“We must recognize that if the talks fail —
and the world will believe they failed because of us — there will be a
price, and it’s best we know what that price is,” Lapid said.Lapid also dismissed claims by Economy
Minister Naftali Bennett Tuesday that a Palestinian state would be an
economic burden on Israel. A peace agreement would result in an added
NIS 20 billion annually to the state budget, and potential growth of NIS
16 billion in exports, he maintained.“Today Israel is more exposed economically
than from a security perspective,” he added. “The security debate makes
us forget occasionally the fact that our military is not a goal, it is a
tool. It’s a tool that is meant to allow us to reach an agreement that
will strengthen Israel’s economy and guarantee its future as a Jewish
state.”The finance minister’s remarks echoed those of US Secretary of State John Kerry
last week at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Kerry
pointed to the economic benefits Israel would reap from reaching a peace
deal with the Palestinians, stating that Israel would have immediate
diplomatic recognition and economic ties with the Arab and Muslim world
and would potentially see a 2 percent increase in GDP per year.

It is unlikely that any Arab state will become democratic in the coming years, Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon said Thursday.“I
do not believe I will see, in my lifetime, democracy in the Arab
world,” Ya’alon said during a meeting in Berlin with German Federal
Minister of Defense Ursula von der Leyen.The defense minister cited instability across
the Middle East as the reason for his assessment, and said he foresees
further internal turmoil in Arab countries.“The situation in the Middle East is very
complex and unstable, and we expect to have chronic instability in the
coming years,” he said.“We are great supporters of democracy and I
wish there were more democratic states around us,” he said, adding that
elections did not mean a country had achieved democracy.“We have experience in the Palestinian arena,
in Gaza, where Hamas won the elections but there is no democracy. This
was also the case in Egypt with the Muslim Brotherhood, and the Egyptian
people realized there would not be a democracy and that their condition
did not improve, so they took to the streets.”Ya’alon went on to discuss the raging civil
war in Syria, and said he finds it hard to believe the conflict will be
resolved in the near future.“In Syria we haven’t seen Bashar Assad defeat
the opposition, but we also do not see that the opposition is defeating
Assad – he now controls forty percent of Syrian territory.”The defense minister said Iran was behind most
of the unrest in the region, and accused the Islamic Republic of
exporting terror throughout the globe. He also called on world powers to
ensure that Iran never acquire a nuclear weapon.“The Iranian regime is the main cause of
instability in the Middle East and beyond. The Iranians are involved in
conflicts in the Middle East, and they spread terror in South America,
Asia and Africa,” he said. “We are talking about a messianic-apocalyptic
regime, so one way or another its nuclear program must be stopped,
otherwise it will become a nightmare for the Middle East and the entire
world.”During the meeting with his German
counterpart, Ya’alon praised Germany’s “special connection” with Israel,
and said Israel appreciates the German government’s continues support.“With our dark past in the background, Germany
and Israel currently share common values and mutual interests, and we
continue to share our opinions in favor of the future of the world, and
together deal with our challenges,” Ya’alon said. “Germany and Israel
are two democracies facing similar threats.”

accepts this with joy. David had "a strong feeling of belonging to the

South Africa: Catholic bishops’ newspaper calls for an end to laws that criminalise homosexuals

South African Catholic weekly “Southern Cross” has criticised the severe anti-gay legislation passed recently by the Ugandan and Nigerian governments, as well as similar legislation being proposed in Tanzania. These laws risk false reports being filed, as is happening under Pakistan’s anti blasphemy law

Southern Cross, a weekly promoted by the Southern African
Catholic Bishops' Conference (which includes the bishops of South
Africa, Botswana, and Swaziland), has written an editorial about the
Catholic Church needing to raise its voice against “draconian
legislation aimed at criminalising homosexuals” which is being passed in
some African countries.“Recently the Ugandan and Nigerian parliaments both passed severe
anti-gay legislation. Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni has vetoed it;
Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan signed it into law. Other
countries, such as Cameroon and Tanzania, are proposing to pass similar
legislation,” the editorial reads.“These laws are not intended to render same-sex acts illegal — they
already are, and punishable, in most African countries — but to
persecute people on the basis of their sexual orientation. Such laws are
not only unjust, but they also have the potential to tear at the fabric
of society if they are misused to facilitate false denunciations for
gain, advancement or vengeance, much as what Christians are exposed to
in Pakistan under that country’s intolerable blasphemy law,” the
editorial goes on to say.The comparison drawn by South Africa’s bishops is worrying. Although
the Catechism of the Catholic Church emphatically rejects homosexual
carnal acts, it also declares that “every sign of unjust discrimination
in their [homosexuals’] regard should be avoided”. The Catechism further
demands that homosexuals “must be accepted with respect, compassion,
and sensitivity” (2358). Southern Cross calls on “African bishops
especially” to “speak out ... against the discriminatory legislation and
violence directed at homosexuals, many of whom are fellow Catholics.”
