Canada is a diverse country, consisting of hundreds of cultures from all around the world. Every year, hundreds of thousands of immigrants settle down in Canada to start a new life for themselves and their families. Canada’s immigration rate has remained fairly steady over the past two decades. However, recent years have seen record numbers, with 437,180 people immigrating to Canada in 2022.A vast majority of immigrants coming to Canada qualify for permanent residency or citizenship. Despite COVID-19’s disruptions, the Canadian government still aims to welcome more immigrants to the country, creating various new programs that are opening new doors for residency status.Check out some of Canada’s most fascinating immigration down below.Immigration Statistics for Canadians-Canada has one of the Western world’s highest citizenship rates among immigrants. About 300,000 new immigrants come to Canada annually. However, in recent years numbers have increased to over 400,000. 1 in 4 Canadian workers in the healthcare system is an immigrant. The 2016 Census reported almost 22% of Canada’s population was composed of immigrants or permanent residents.Over 80% of Canada’s population growth is attributed to permanent and nonpermanent immigrants.76% is the labor market participation rate among immigrants living in Canada. As of 2016, 61.8% of new immigrants coming to Canada were born in Asia.In 2016, 86.2% of immigrants 18 and over met Canadian citizenship requirements.

More than 1 in 5 Canadians are immigrants

The 2016 Census reported that about 22% of Canada’s population was composed of landed immigrants or permanent residents. From 2011 to 2016, 1,212,075 new immigrants arrived in Canada. Canada’s 2016 Census results mirror similar statistics to the 1921 Census, a year which held the greatest immigrant percentage since Confederation. As of 2016, over 7 million Canadians spoke their immigrant language at home, with over 140 languages reported. The most spoken languages were Mandarin, Punjabi, Arabic, and Tagalog.A majority of immigrants in Canada come from AsiaAs of 2019, a vast majority of new immigrants to Canada came from Asia, with India leading the way. After India, China and the Philippines followed. Over 85,000 individuals immigrated from India, along with about 30,00 individuals from China and 28,000 from the Philippines. Other popular countries included: Nigeria, the United States, Pakistan, Syria, Eritrea, Korea, and Iran. Canada has immigrants from 175 countries. Most of Canada’s immigrants enter the country in one of three ways: an economic program, reuniting with family, or asylum-seeking. In 2016, Africa replaced Europe as the second continent with the greatest recent Canadian immigration. Over 13% of immigrants came from Africa, with the most popular countries being Nigeria, Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, and Cameroon. Immigration from Europe is estimated to decrease over the next decade while Africa remains in second place.Approximately 60% of immigrants were approved to come to Canada through the economic admission category-Over half of Canada’s immigrants are granted entry through an economic program, one of Canada’s approaches to simultaneously upholding economic development and humanitarian aid. Within the economic category, 48% of immigrants were admitted through a skilled workers program, and over 27% were admitted through the provincial and territorial nominees program. The skilled workers program is a federal express entry program that requires applicants to have either Skill Type 0 (management), Skill Level A (professional), or Skill Level B (skilled trades). Skill levels are classified by the National Occupation Classification system and are grouped based on job responsibilities. The Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) are express entry programs tailored to specific province and territory economic and demographic needs.About 25% of Canada’s healthcare workers are immigrants. One in four Canadians working in the healthcare sector is an immigrant. Immigrants make up about 40% of Canadian dentists and about 36% of Canadian physicians. Immigrants also make up over half of the dental technologist field in Canada as well. Based on the 2016 Census, over 335,000 immigrants work in the Canadian healthcare sector. Adult immigrants in the healthcare sector were about four times more likely to be overqualified for a position compared to those with the same level of education in Canada. About 40% of immigrants working in the healthcare industry completed their postsecondary education in Canada, though the specific percentages tend to drastically vary by country of origin.More than one in four food industry workers in Canada are immigrants-Over 25% of those working in the food and beverage sector in Canada are immigrants. In fact, over half of Canada’s food and beverage business owners with paid staff are immigrants. Throughout Canada, the percentage of immigrant business owners in the food industry greatly varies per province. For example, in the Northwest Territories, 80% of the food and beverage business owners are immigrants compared to Prince Edward Island’s 22%. Immigrants tend to donate more to charity than Canadian-born citizens.Almost 40% of immigrants in Canada over the age of 15 volunteer throughout the year. Between 2006 and 2016, an almost 60% increase was seen in immigrant social and community service workers. A Statistics Canada study showed that immigrants also gave more on average to charity compared to Canadian-born donors, with an annual average of $544 compared to $409. Even when comparing lower household incomes, immigrants gave almost $200 more to charity annually than Canadian-born counterparts. Immigrants are also more likely to donate to religious-based organizations.Looking Towards the Future-Future predictions show there will be an increase in international immigrants who settle in Canada whose home language is neither English nor French-A Statistics Canada study predicted that by 2036, Canada will experience a population increase of individuals whose mother tongue is neither English nor French. These results mirror the results of a 2011 study that showed that immigrants are the vast majority of cases in which one’s mother tongue is neither French nor English. The report acknowledged that 200 languages are present in Canada, limiting the study from predicting what specific changes will occur to each language. An increase in the English-speaking population is expected to increase whereas French speakers, outside of Quebec, are expected to decrease. The population of non-Christian immigrants as well as visible minority groups is also expected to rise over the next decade. By 2036, the visible minority population could make up 31.2% to 35.8% of Canada’s population.By 2036, 40% of Canada’s population could be immigrants-Population predictions indicate that Canada’s immigrant population may make up 24.5% to 30% of Canada’s total population by 2036. Almost 60% of Canada’s immigrant population is expected to come from Asia. Canada’s European immigration percentage is expected to decrease, almost by half, with an expected range of 15.4% to 17.8% by 2036, compared to 31.6% in 2011. In terms of geographic residency, the primary areas of immigrant settlement in Canada are expected to remain the same – Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver. However, other provinces are expected to see increases in their immigrant population as well.-Summary-Canada’s vast multiculturalism is one of its most defining features. Immigrants help facilitate economic development, making up significant portions of Canada’s workforce across a variety of important sectors. Over the next decade, predictions indicate immigration to Canada will continue to increase, helping with potential work shortages and fostering more diversity throughout the country.

Indian media attack Trudeau over claim of extrajudicial killing of Sikh leader-Trudeau is to be squarely blamed for deepening 'the divide within the Indian diaspora abroad,' reads one of the news reports-Bloomberg News-Niluksi Koswanage-Published Sep 21, 2023

As the world reeled in shock over Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s charge that India orchestrated the extrajudicial murder of a separatist leader, media outlets in the South Asian country went into attack mode.Leading dailies questioned the veracity of Canada’s claim that Indian government agents assassinated a prominent Sikh leader on Canadian soil. Many articles criticized Trudeau, in particular, questioning why his government had yet to release evidence — and appearing to side with India’s unequivocal rejection of the allegation.“For Mr. Trudeau, the priority must be to publicly prove his very serious allegations, or admit he is unable to,” the Hindu newspaper said in an editorial published early Wednesday. “New Delhi must also consider how it wishes to proceed on its ties with Canada.”The nationalist bent in coverage works for Prime Minster Narendra Modi, who has yet to address Canada’s accusations. Modi is more than likely to win a third term in power when elections come around next year, and his government’s rigid position against secessionist Sikh groups, including the one led by the murdered Canadian citizen, tracks well with most voters in India. The opposition has kept largely silent on the issue.India’s press is increasingly following the government’s official line — the result of a years-long crackdown on independent media since Modi took office in 2014. The nation has hundreds of newspapers and television news channels serving the world’s biggest democracy, and their commentaries often have an impact on the public mood.“Not looking to provoke, but…: Justin Trudeau’s fresh message to India,” was one of the headlines flashed by NDTV, a media outlet that used to be relatively critical of Modi’s government. It was taken over last year by a tycoon widely regarded as an ally to the Indian prime minister.NDTV also published a report detailing Trudeau’s past political missteps. It first references his decision to skip a dinner for leaders at this month’s Group of 20 summit, which saw the US and its allies position India as a strong counterweight to China. In going public with the murder claims, Trudeau has “tried to divide India-West cooperation, with the real winner being a belligerent China in the Indo-Pacific and against Taiwan,” The Hindustan Times wrote in an analysis.Other media honed in on an old Canadian travel advisory to the contested Himalayan region of Jammu and Kashmir, reporting that it had been posted after Trudeau went public with his allegations. The Times of India said “the move has further exacerbated the ongoing confrontation between India and Canada.”The current travel advisory, however, includes health advice and a warning on the restive region that’s been there since July of this year, according to cached website documents. Pierre Cuguen, a spokesman for Global Affairs Canada, said no new risk information was added to the travel advisory page.India appeared to react to the media reports by issuing an advisory for Indian nationals in Canada, asking them to exercise “utmost caution” and avoid traveling to areas where there’s anti-India activities and “politically condoned hate crimes.”

Khalistan Connection-Indian news reports focused on the biography of the murdered Canadian citizen, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, 45, who was slain in June by unknown assailants outside a Sikh temple in British Columbia. Nijjar openly supported the formation of an independent Sikh state in northwestern India — known as Khalistan — but India and the domestic media have consistently described him as a terrorist.“India’s assertions over Canadian safe havens for anti-India, separatist violent Khalistani groups have already been proven by many incidents, beginning from the early 1980s to more recent targeting of Indian diplomats and Indian community centres,” the Hindu newspaper said.Major newspapers in India carried reports that claimed security officials had repeatedly requested Canada to deport “terrorists and gangsters” linked to pro-Khalistan groups. Yet Trudeau’s government had taken no action on these individuals and groups, the reports said.India’s government spokesman declined to comment on the news reports.“It is quite evident that Canada will continue to provide shelter to anti-India Sikh radicals and this episode will further deepen the divide within the Indian diaspora abroad and for that PM Trudeau is to be squarely blamed,” The Hindustan Times said. Our website is the place for the latest breaking news, exclusive scoops, longreads and provocative commentary.

SINCE TRUDEAU SUCK HOLES UP TO ISLAM. THIS INDIA STORY I PREDICT IS TRUE.

SO WE HAVE HAVE THE DADDYS LITTLE BOY JUSTIN SAYING THE INDIAN GOVERNMENT KILLED A CANADIAN CITIZEN. THE INDIAN GOVERNMENT IS CRYING FOWL. WELL MY TAKE ON THIS IS. CLOSE THE BORDER FOR 5 YEARS. NO ALLOWING MIGRANTS IN CANADA FOR 5 YEARS. BY THEN THE LIBERALS SHOULD BE OUTTA POWER.

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau pushed back Tuesday on India's denial of allegations that it played a role in the death of a Canadian citizen, which New Delhi blasted as "absurd and motivated.Dylan Robertson, The Canadian Press-SEP 19,23

Yet while Trudeau is urging India to take the matter seriously, Liberals also say they hope to maintain normal ties with a country Ottawa has selected as a key partner in the Indo-Pacific. Trudeau revealed in the House of Commons on Monday that Canadian intelligence services are investigating "credible" information about "a potential link" between India's government and the death of British Columbia Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar.Trudeau said Tuesday thatIndia's government "needs to take this matter with the utmost seriousness" but would not say whether it is co-operating."It is extremely serious and it has far-reaching consequences in international law," he told reporters on Parliament Hill.Trudeau said he waited until he was able to raise the issue with allies and with India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the G20 summit in New Delhi earlier this month before telling the public about the possible link."We wanted to make sure that we had a solid grounding in understanding what was going on in analysis and indeed in facts," Trudeau said."We wanted to make sure we were taking the time to talk with our allies, to share what we knew. We wanted to make sure that we fully shared with the government of India, the seriousness and the depths of our preoccupations and indeed conclusions."On Monday,Ottawa ordered a senior Indian diplomat to leave Canada, and India responded by sending an unnamed Canadian diplomat packing, citing unspecified "interference of Canadian diplomats in our internal matters and their involvement in anti-India activities."India's ministry of external affairs said after Trudeau's announcement that it rejects the accusations, arguing they mean to distract from Sikh separatists in Canada that New Delhi argue pose a security risk."The inaction of the Canadian government on this matter has been a long-standing and continuing concern," reads a statement from the ministry, which was posted before Trudeau's comments on Tuesday morning.A senior government source who is close to the prime minister said Trudeau was confident enough in the allegations that he opted to raise them directly with Modi in New Delhi. The source, who was granted anonymity because they were not authorized to speak about the matter publicly, said Trudeau opted to share the news to clear the air in response to mounting questions from the media and rumours in diaspora communities about India's involvement.Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre said Trudeau ought to share more information about what led him to make his Monday statement in Parliament. He said the prime minister did not share more details with him than what he had said in the House of Commons."We need to see more facts. The prime minister hasn't provided any facts," he told reporters Tuesday on Parliament Hill.NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh has written to the newly appointed head of the public inquiry on foreign interference, asking Justice Marie-Josée Hogue to include India in her probe. The Liberals have suggested her terms are wide enough to include any country as well as the Nijjar case."In my experience, as a Sikh-Canadian, there have always been suspicions that India was interfering in the democratic rights of Canadians," Singh wrote in the letter. "Yesterday’s announcement by the prime minister confirms that these suspicions are valid."Global Affairs Canada would not disclose the name of the diplomat that India has decided to expel. Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly said Monday that Canada's high commission has taken extra steps to protect its staff. The United States, United Kingdom and Australia have all issued statements calling for theallegationsto be thoroughly probed."We are deeply concerned about the allegations referenced by Prime Minister Trudeau yesterday," the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa said in a statement."We remain in regular contact with our Canadian partners. It is critical that Canada's investigation proceed and the perpetrators be brought to justice.”Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc had confirmed Monday that the head of Canada's spy agency and Trudeau's national security and intelligence adviser, Jody Thomas, both travelled to India recently to confront their counterparts about the issue.Thomas's predecessor, Vincent Rigby, said that would not have happened if Ottawa only had "a hunch or a gut feeling" about the intelligence."They have something, I suspect. I have a feeling it's pretty concrete, and it's enough to raise it to the most senior levels in the Indian government," Rigby said in an interview. He said Washington will likely support Canada in private, but will need to sort out how much it's willing to upset New Delhi as the U.S. undertakes a "major charm offensive" to secure more trade with India.Nijjar was shot outside his gurdwara in Surrey, B.C., on June 18. Members of the Sikh community have accused the Indian government of being behind the killing and attempting to silence voices advocating for an independent Sikh country.LeBlanc said Tuesday that the RCMP has a plan to look after members of Canada's Sikh community, and he has instructed CSIS to share any pertinent information about Nijjar's death with police."We knew, as the prime minister has been saying for several weeks, that this news would at some point come out publicly. And the good news is that the RCMP has been developing plans for several weeks with their partners from other police forces," LeBlanc said in French. He added that it is the jurisdiction of police officials, not government ministers, to determine who should receive protection and how."I have every confidence in the RCMP based on my extensive conversations with their leadership over the last number of months that they have the resources necessary and the plans in place to protect Canadians," LeBlanc saidin English.Former foreign-affairs minister Marc Garneau said the situation is "quite an extraordinary event" and argued Trudeau needs to share more information if there's any hope of salvaging a relationship with a country of increasing importance to Canada."Now that it's in the public arena, the onus is very much on Canada to demonstrate unequivocally that its claim is based on factual evidence, that is irrefutable evidence that India won't be able to deny," Garneau said in a Tuesday interview on an unrelated topic.Garneau said India regularly raised the issue of Sikh extremists with him while in office, and that Ottawa was aware of New Delhi's interference in Canada back when its Indo-Pacific strategy was first being drafted."It's always preferable to remain engaged, rather than close the door," he said. But to "resume productive relations," he said, "we need to resolve the extremely serious issue that's at hand."Trudeau said he does not want to make things worse for relations with India."We are not looking to provoke or escalate. We are simply laying out the facts as we understand them, and we want to work with the government of India to lay everything clear."Emergency Preparedness Minister Harjit Sajjan suggested he hopes Canada can maintain normal relations with India despite the incident."Right now, we're hopeful that the Indian government co-operates with the investigation. When it comes to all the other relationships that we have, we look forward to continuing as normal," he said.Sajjan, who is Sikh, pushed back on the Indian government's contention that Sikh extremists have senior roles in Trudeau's government."India's been making those accusations for a very long time," he said, encouraging reporters to "draw your own conclusions."Treasury Board President Anita Anand, the first Hindu person to become a federal cabinet minister, said it's "a very difficult time" for South Asians of any religion, noting her parents are from India. She urged people to "be prudent" and remain calm. The National Council of Canadian Muslims is calling for non-partisan co-operation to uncover facts about the alleged "state-sponsored terrorism" and make sure nobody else is targeted. "This is an unprecedented attack on Canadian sovereignty, full stop," the group's head Stephen Brown told reporters. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Sept. 19, 2023.— With files from Mia Rabson, Jim Bronskill, Alessia Passafiumeand Mickey Djuric.

What is the Sikh separatist movement at centre of the Canada-India dispute? The shooting death of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey, B.C., in June has touched off a foreign affairs crisis between Canada and India over the Sikh leader's role in the Khalistan separatism movement. Here is what you need to know about the movement.Canadian Press-SEP 19,23

The shooting death of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey, B.C., in June has touched off a foreign affairs crisis between Canada and India over the Sikh leader's role in the Khalistan separatism movement. Here is what you need to know about the movement. What is Khalistan? Khalistan is the term used for the quest of an independent Sikh homeland centred around the Indian state of Punjab where Sikhs make up a majority of the population. The group comprises about 1.7 per cent of India's overall population. How long has the Khalistan movement been around? The idea for a separate Sikh state has been around for at least 300 years, according to the Encyclopedia Britannica. The idea featured prominently during the talks before the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947.Where is the movement now? A report by the Canadian Network for Research on Terrorism, Security and Society at the University of Waterloo says the movement in Punjab peaked in the 1980s and early 1990s with a number of political and religious conflicts but it has since tapered off in India. However, the report says activity has resurfaced overseas, particularly in Canada, since the 1985 Air India bombing. Is the movement still popular in Canada? Organizers of an overseas referendum say more than 135,000 people turned up on Sept. 10 to vote at the Surrey gurdwara where Nijjar was shot dead, and another vote is planned for Oct. 29. Organizers also say other votes are planned throughout Canada and across the world. How large is the Sikh community in Canada? Statistics Canada says in 2022 that there were about 770,000 practitioners of the Sikh religion in the country, and the Canadian Network for Research on Terrorism, Security and Society says in a report that opinions are divided in the Canadian Sikh diaspora on the Khalistan movement, with a significant number of those in the community who do not support it. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Sept. 19, 2023.The Canadian Press

The Canadian Press-India expels Canadian diplomat after Canada links Indian agents to Sikh leader death-The Canadian Press-Tue, September 19, 2023 at 9:25 a.m. EDT

India struck back at Canada early Tuesday after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau linked agents of India's government to the shooting death of a Sikh leader near Vancouver.A statement from India's Ministry of External Affairs says an unnamed senior Canadian diplomat has been asked to leave India within the next five days."The decision reflects Government of India’s growing concern at the interference of Canadian diplomats in our internal matters," said the statement.Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly said earlier on Monday that Canada was expelling India's Pavan Kumar Rai, whom her department lists in its public registry as a diplomatic agent who heads up an Indian intelligence agency based in Ottawa.Trudeau told the House of Commons on Monday that there is credibility to the allegations that Indian government agents played a role in the death of Hardeep Singh Nijjar."Over the past number of weeks, Canadian security agencies have been actively pursuing credible allegations of a potential link between agents of the government of India and the killing of a Canadian citizen," he said."Any involvement of a foreign government in the killing of a Canadian citizen on Canadian soil is an unacceptable violation of our sovereignty. It is contrary to the fundamental rules by which free, open and democratic societies conduct themselves."Nijjar was killed in the parking lot of his gurdwara in Surrey, B.C. on June 18.While Sikh community leaders in Canada have insisted the government of India was involved, police previously said they had not made any link to foreign interference. The Indian government rejected allegations of involvement in Nijjar's death, calling them ``absurd and motivated.''"Such unsubstantiated allegations seek to shift the focus from Khalistani terrorists and extremists, who have been provided shelter in Canada and continue to threaten India's sovereignty and territorial integrity," India's Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.

AOC, other Dems drowned out by screaming protesters at NYC migrant crisis news conference-Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and others held event at Roosevelt Hotel in Manhattan, which has become a relief center for migrants-Greg Norman By Greg Norman Fox News-Published September 15, 2023 11:28am EDT

Mayor Eric Adams has said the catastrophe could destroy the Big Apple.Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and other Democrats were loudly heckled Friday at a press conference in New York City regarding the migrant crisis there. The Democrats, speaking outside of a hotel in Manhattan that has become a relief center for asylum seekers, were drowned out by shouting protesters chanting "send them back!" and "close the border!""My name is Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. I'm here alongside Representative Adriano Espaillat, and we're incredibly thrilled and excited to be here..." Ocasio-Cortez started saying as the crowd started growing in noise outside the Roosevelt Hotel."We have geographic diversity here, including representative from California, Texas, Illinois and New Jersey," she added."Close the border! Close the border! Respect the constitution AOC! I am your constituant!" a man was then heard shouting into a megaphone. "And what we seek to do is to make sure that all the resources are necessary and that we are joining with the city and state" Ocasio-Cortez continued saying before man weilding the megaphone shouted over her, saying "Illegal immigration is not right! Respect the constitution, close the border!" This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.

After plea deal collapse, Hunter Biden charged with illegally purchasing gun-Prosecutors accuse the US president’s son of lying on forms to buy firearm when he declared in 2018 that he wasn’t using drugs at the time-By Paul Handley Today,SEP 15,23 9:06 am 2

WASHINGTON (AFP) — US President Joe Biden’s son Hunter was indicted Thursday for illegally buying a gun when he was using drugs, casting a new shadow over his father’s campaign for reelection next year.Hunter Biden, 53, was charged with two counts of making false statements when claiming on forms required for the 2018 gun purchase that he was not using drugs illegally at the time.A third charge said that, based on the false statements, he illegally possessed the gun during an 11-day period in October that year.If convicted on all three felony charges, Biden could in theory face 25 years in prison, though in practice they are seldom punished by any jail time.In attesting that he was not an unlawful user of drugs when he bought the Colt Cobra revolver, Biden “knew that statement was false,” the Justice Department said. The indictment came two days after Republicans in Congress opened an impeachment probe against Democrat Joe Biden, alleging that when he was vice president he benefitted financially from his son’s foreign business dealings. The legal troubles of Hunter Biden present a target for political rivals of his father, who is bidding for a second term in the White House.Hunter is a Yale-trained lawyer and lobbyist-turned-artist, but his life has been marred by alcoholism and crack cocaine addiction.Without offering any evidence, Republicans have accused Biden’s Justice Department of protecting his son and have accused Weiss, a Republican appointee, of going easy on Hunter.Representative James Comer, a Republican from Kentucky who will be leading the impeachment inquiry, welcomed the filing of the gun charges, calling it a “very small start.”“Mountains of evidence reveals that Hunter Biden likely committed several felonies and Americans expect the Justice Department to apply the law equally,” Comer said.Twice-impeached former president Donald Trump reacted on his Truth Social platform. This, the gun charge, is the only crime that Hunter Biden committed that does not implicate Crooked Joe Biden,” he said.Plea deal collapsed-But a leading Democrat, Keisha Lance Bottoms, ex-mayor of Atlanta and a former senior adviser to Joe Biden, questioned why Hunter had been charged.“Can anyone tell me how many people have been federally indicted for purchasing a gun while dealing with substance abuse issues?” Bottoms said on X, formerly known as Twitter.“I don’t know the answer, but in my over 29 years as an attorney, I have never heard of it.”The gun charges were filed by Justice Department special counsel David Weiss, who has been investigating Hunter Biden since 2018 over various allegations, mostly related to his overseas business deals. Two months ago a plea deal between Biden and Weiss, covering the gun charge as well as alleged tax violations, went sour.Biden agreed to plead guilty in federal court in Delaware to two minor tax charges. In exchange, he was offered probation, as he had already paid what he owed the government along with penalties.Weiss agreed to suspend the felony gun charge if Biden completed “pretrial diversion,” which often involves counseling or rehabilitation. But in a dramatic July 26 hearing, the deal collapsed over whether Biden would have been immune from any other charges also investigated by Weiss, including possible crimes related to his business dealings in Ukraine, China, and elsewhere. The judge mentioned the possibility that Biden could be charged as having acted as a lobbyist for foreign governments without registering with the Justice Department.Three weeks later, after the deal collapsed, Weiss dropped the tax charges and said an indictment on the gun charge would come by the end of September. As the 2024 election race swings into gear, Republicans in the House of Representatives on Tuesday formally opened an impeachment inquiry against President Biden. They alleged, without offering hard evidence, that while vice president in 2015-2016, Biden intervened to protect an allegedly corrupt Ukrainian energy company, Burisma, where Hunter Biden sat on the board.Republicans allege Joe Biden and his family reaped large sums for helping Burisma.

Likud MK makes Rosh Hashanah pilgrimage to Uman despite Netanyahu’s warning-Eliyahu Revivo sends supporters ‘a personal and special blessing’ from the Ukrainian city; tens of thousands expected to spend the Jewish new year there amid Russian invasion-By ToI Staff Today,SEP 15,23 11:57 am 14

A member of the ruling Likud party traveled to Uman for Rosh Hashanah, brushing aside Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s warning against visiting the city during the Jewish new year amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine.Despite the ongoing war, tens of thousands of mostly ultra-Orthodox Jews are expected to be in Uman for Rosh Hashanah, which begins Friday evening and runs until Sunday at sundown, to pray at the grave of revered Hasidic leader Rabbi Nachman of Breslov.Ukrainian authorities have set up concrete mobile shelters and heightened security measures in the city, which has previously been targeted by lethal Russian airstrikes, while repeatedly advising travelers not to make the trip this year.“From here in Uman at the grave of the holy Rabbi Nachman, I wish to give you a personal and special blessing of all the best wishes that one can only pray for,” Likud MK Eliyahu Revivo wrote in a Rosh Hashanah message sent to supporters, according to a Channel 12 news screenshot.Revivo visited Uman despite Netanyahu’s warning last week that the pilgrimage was dangerous, even though the government approved financial aid for such pilgrims. The premier said that when Israel comes under missile attacks, people head for shelter and have protection, “but [in Ukraine] — there are no shelters and there is no protection.”“God has not always protected us, not on European soil and not on Ukrainian soil,” Netanyahu also said. That comment elicited outrage in Haredi circles, later leading to several statements of condemnation and rebuttal, including a lawmaker from the coalition’s United Torah Judaism party who accused Netanyahu of “ignorance” and claimed it was the “Zionists,” rather than God, who were to blame for the suffering of Jews in the Holocaust. On Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with dozens of Chabad rabbis in the country ahead of Rosh Hashanah and reportedly said he expected stronger backing from Israel, noting it would have made it easier for the country to host the thousands of pilgrims heading to Uman.“He said he told Netanyahu that there is a shortage of bomb shelters, but if Israel would help Ukraine, there would be no need for the shelters,” one of the rabbis at the meeting told The Times of Israel.“I will try to take care of Israelis on their way to Uman,” Israel’s Channel 12 reported Zelensky as saying, citing two people who were present. “But if Israel were to agree to send Iron Dome, there would be a way to protect those Israelis. The responsibility to protect them is also the Israeli government’s but it doesn’t do so.”The Ynet news site also reported the remarks, without citing sources.Zelensky, who is Jewish himself, handed out decorations to 15 Jewish soldiers at the event, organized by the Federation of Jewish Communities of Ukraine and its head, Rabbi Meir Stambler.Israel has been working with Ukraine on deploying a civilian aerial warning system to alert the population to an incoming attack, but without the interceptor component that destroys incoming rockets. The system is expected to initially cover much of Kyiv, before hopefully being copied in other cities.Iran is supplying ally Russia with attack drones that Ukraine wants to shoot down with the Iron Dome.
Ukraine has long sought missile interceptor capabilities, but Israel has so far refused, seeking to avoid overly antagonizing Russia. This hesitance is seen as linked to Israel’s strategic need to maintain freedom of operations in Syria, where Russian forces largely control the airspace.
Israel is one of the few countries that maintains relatively good relations with both Ukraine, a fellow Western democracy, and Russia.

Global Jewish population hits 15.7 million ahead of new year, 46% of them in Israel-Data released by Jewish Agency on eve of Rosh Hashanah shows number of Jews worldwide grew by 100,000 over past year-By ToI Staff Today, 8:38 am 0-SEP 15,23

The global Jewish population climbed to 15.7 million over the last year, while the number of those living in Israel hit 7.2 million, according to figures the Jewish Agency released on the eve of Rosh Hashanah. The data showed that the global Jewish population grew by some 100,000 over the past year. Israel accounts for 46 percent of the world Jewry, similar to the previous year, with 8.5 million living in communities in the Diaspora.
Following Israel, the United States has the second-largest Jewish population with around 6.3 million. The countries with the next 10 largest Jewish populations are France (440,000), Canada (398,000), the United Kingdom (312,000), Argentina (171,000), Russia (132,000), Germany (125,000), Australia (117,200),  and Brazil (90,000). The figures were based on estimates by Prof. Sergio Della Pergola of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
The Jewish Agency said some 27,000 Jews live in Muslim-majority countries, with 14,200 in Turkey, 9,100 in Iran, 2,100 in Morocco, 1,000 in Tunisia, and 500 in the United Arab Emirates. There were 80 countries in the world with Jewish populations between 100 and 10,000 people. The statistics are based on self-identification as Jewish and not as any other religion. According to the Jewish Agency, when also including those eligible to get citizenship under Israel’s Law of Return, which requires at least one Jewish grandparent, there are 25.5 million Jews worldwide.

Flooding death toll soars to 11,300 in Libya’s coastal city of Derna, aid group says-Search efforts underway following massive flood in coastal city fed by breaching of two dams in heavy rains caused by Mediterranean storm Daniel-By AP Today, 4:03 am 0-EP 15,23

DERNA, Libya — The death toll in Libya’s coastal city of Derna has soared to 11,300 as search efforts continue following a massive flood fed by the breaching of two dams in heavy rains, the Libyan Red Crescent said Thursday.Marie el-Drese, the aid group’s secretary-general, told The Associated Press by phone that a further 10,100 people are reported missing in the Mediterranean city. Health authorities previously put the death toll in Derna at 5,500. The storm also killed about 170 people elsewhere in the country. The flooding swept away entire families in Derna on Sunday night and exposed vulnerabilities in the oil-rich country that has been mired in conflict since a 2011 uprising that toppled long-ruling dictator Muammar Gaddafi. Here’s a look at where things stand:Daniel, an unusually strong Mediterranean storm, caused deadly flooding in communities across eastern Libya, but the worst-hit was Derna. As the storm pounded the coast Sunday night, residents said they heard loud explosions when two dams outside the city collapsed. Floodwaters gushed down Wadi Derna, a valley that cuts through the city, crashing through buildings and washing people out to sea.A UN official said Thursday that most casualties could have been avoided. This combination of satellite images from Maxar Technologies shows a coastal roadway in Derna, Libya, on July 1, 2023, top, and the same flood damaged area on Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2023. The destruction came to Derna and other parts of eastern Libya on Sunday night, Sept. 10, 2023. As the storm pounded the coast, Derna residents said they heard loud explosions and realized that dams outside the city had collapsed. “If there would have been a normal operating meteorological service, they could have issued the warnings,” World Meteorological Organization head Petteri Taalas told reporters in Geneva. “The emergency management authorities would have been able to carry out the evacuation.”The WMO said earlier this week that the National Meteorological Center issued warnings 72 hours before the flooding, notifying all governmental authorities by email and through media.Officials in eastern Libya warned the public about the coming storm, and on Saturday, they ordered residents to evacuate coastal areas, fearing a surge from the sea. But there was no warning about the dams collapsing.HOW DOES CONFLICT IN LIBYA AFFECT THE DISASTER? The startling devastation reflected the storm’s intensity, but also Libya’s vulnerability. Oil-rich Libya has been divided between rival governments for most of the past decade — one in the east, the other in the capital, Tripoli — and one result has been the widespread neglect of infrastructure. The two dams that collapsed outside Derna were built in the 1970s. A report by a state-run audit agency in 2021 said the dams had not been maintained despite the allocation of more than 2 million euros for that purpose in 2012 and 2013.Libya’s Tripoli-based prime minister, Abdul-Hamid Dbeibah, acknowledged the maintenance issues during a Cabinet meeting Thursday and called on the Public Prosecutor to open an urgent investigation into the dams’ collapse. The disaster brought a rare moment of unity, as government agencies across the country rushed to help the affected areas. While the Tobruk-based government of eastern Libya is leading relief efforts, the Tripoli-based western government allocated the equivalent of $412 million for reconstruction in Derna and other eastern towns, and an armed group in Tripoli sent a convoy with humanitarian aid.WHAT’S HAPPENING TODAY? Derna has begun burying its dead, mostly in mass graves, said eastern Libya’s health minister, Othman Abduljaleel earlier Thursday.More than 3,000 bodies were buried by Thursday morning, the minister said, while another 2,000 were still being processed, He said most of the dead were buried in mass graves outside Derna, while others were transferred to nearby towns and cities.Abduljaleel said rescue teams were still searching wrecked buildings in the city center, and divers were combing the sea off Derna.Untold numbers could be buried under drifts of mud and debris, including overturned cars and chunks of concrete, that rise up to four meters (13 feet) high. Rescuers have struggled to bring in heavy equipment as the floods washed out or blocked roads leading to the area.Libya’s eastern based parliament, The House of Representatives, on Thursday approved an emergency budget of 10 billion Libyan dinars — roughly $2 billion — to address the flooding and help those affected.HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE BEEN KILLED? As of Thursday, the Libyan Red Crescent said that 11,300 people have been killed, and a further 10,100 are reported missing. However, local officials suggested that the death toll could be much higher than announced. In comments to the Saudi-owned Al Arabia television station on Thursday, Derna Mayor Abdel-Moneim al-Ghaithi said the tally could climb to 20,000 given the number of neighborhoods that were washed out.The storm also killed around 170 people in other parts of eastern Libya, including the towns of Bayda, Susa, Um Razaz and Marj, the health minister said. The dead in eastern Libya included at least 84 Egyptians, whose remains were transferred to their home country on Wednesday. More than 70 came from one village in the southern province of Beni Suef. Libyan media also said dozens of Sudanese migrants were killed in the disaster. IS HELP REACHING SURVIVORS? The floods have displaced at least 30,000 people in Derna, according to the UN’s International Organization for Migration, and several thousand others were forced to leave their homes in other eastern towns, it said. The floods damaged or destroyed many access roads to Derna, hampering the arrival of international rescue teams and humanitarian assistance. Local authorities were able to clear some routes, and humanitarian convoys have been able to enter the city over the past couple of days. The UN humanitarian office issued an emergency appeal for $71.4 million to respond to urgent needs of 250,000 Libyans most affected. The office, known as OCHA, estimated that approximately 884,000 people in five provinces live in areas directly affected by the rain and flooding. The International Committee of the Red Cross said Thursday that it has provided 6,000 body bags to local authorities, as well as medical, food and other supplies distributed to hard-hit communities.International aid started to arrive earlier this week in Benghazi, 250 kilometers (150 miles) west of Derna. Several countries have sent aid and rescue teams, including neighboring Egypt, Algeria and Tunisia. Italy dispatched a naval vessel on Thursday carrying humanitarian aid and two navy helicopters to be used for search and rescue operations.President Joe Biden said the United States would send money to relief organizations and coordinate with Libyan authorities and the United Nations to provide additional support.

Displaced by earthquake, Moroccan families brace for nights with no shelter-Devastation has affected 300,000 Moroccans, including 100,000 children; villagers determined to stay and rebuild-By SAM METZ and MOHAMED BOUKDIRE 14 September 2023, 2:57 pm 0

AMIZMIZ, Morocco (AP) — Rachid Alachoun, a 40-year-old plumber, washes clothes on the roof of his home. Half of it remains standing while the other half can be found in piles of rocks visible from the roof.Alachoun is among the survivors near the epicenter of an earthquake that hit Morocco last Friday. Authorities have reported 2,946 deaths and several thousand injuries.Though he has to walk through boulders and wires to get to his kitchen or bedroom, he has stayed in his family’s home in Amizmiz near the Mellah, the old Jewish quarter. He said the tent that authorities gave them is too small for his entire family. So his life at home goes on.Chairs in the remnants of the family home are covered with the dust of broken walls and possessions that are too large to carry out — a washing machine, tables and a fridge — are still trapped inside. He cooks chicken, carrots and olives in a clay pot on the gas stove in an area he’s kept tidy. The situation is especially precarious when aftershocks strike, such as a 4.6-magnitude tremor on Thursday morning. The Alachouns were told last Saturday that assistance was on the way. Food and water arrived but they lacked shelter until Tuesday, when authorities allocated them one of about 30 small yellow tents set up in a square near the center of town — one of several encampments near Amizmiz.“They told us not to come to get supplies and that supplies would come. So we waited,” Alachoun’s sister, Loubna, said from the coated polyester tent she is sharing with another brother, father, mother and a close family friend. The Alachouns are among many Moroccans now asking questions about their futures, particularly as nights get colder and winter approaches. Though many villagers have been provided food and water, officials have said it could take five to six years to rebuild towns in the High Atlas and have created a special fund for recovery.Rebuilding has already begun in parts of the old city of Marrakech, including the old Jewish Quarter, that are frequented by tourists, while efforts in Al Haouz — the province hardest hit by the earthquakes — are still focused on immediate humanitarian needs.People from the region’s mountain villages may move before their homes are rebuilt, but the Alachouns are dedicated to staying. Most people in the region identify as part of Morocco’s largest indigenous group, Amazigh, and cling tightly to their homeland. The Alachouns doubt that any financial assistance could get them an apartment large enough to house their family in Marrakech, more than an hour away.Such is the case for many families with small children.Until Friday, Naima Ait Brahim Ouali, a house cleaner, lived on the third floor of an apartment building with her five children in Sourejdid, a now-destroyed neighborhood in Amizmiz. She and her daughter fell down the staircase as the earthquake shook their building, ripping the top floor straight off, she said. Now her entire neighborhood has relocated to a corner of a tent city in the center of town. She worries about the future for her five children — ages 25, 20, 19, 14 and 10 — some of whom had just started school last week. Her daughters enjoy studying Arabic, with one passionate about reading the Quran. Her sons have a penchant for drawing and theater. But now fear strikes around 11 p.m., the time the earthquake hit last Friday.“They saw death,” she says of her five children, including a daughter who has experienced nightmares.UNICEF, the United Nations agency that provides aid for children, estimated this week that roughly 100,000 children “have been impacted by the powerful earthquake.” The figure follows an earlier U.N. estimate that 300,000 people were affected by the disaster. About one-third of the population in Morocco is children.Ricardo Pires, a spokesperson for UNICEF, said during humanitarian disasters the organization worries about the trauma of displacement as well as basic needs for children such as access to clean water and medical supplies.“Children get separated from their families. They might be displaced, on the move, and not knowing where to go to stay safe,” Pires said. “This is always a major risk in humanitarian disasters or when earthquakes like this break and it’s very hard to reach certain areas.”Ait Brahim Ouali said that even if the government provides funds to rebuild, she doesn’t want to live in a multi-level apartment building made of bricks. She’s committed to remaining in Al Haouz despite the difficulties for her and her family.“We are afraid for the future. We just started the new school year but the earthquake came and ruined everything,” she said, standing under an umbrella outside of a yellow tent as children played inside. “We just want somewhere to hide from the rain.”
