Dallas police arrest man in the case of the missing monkeys-Fri, February 3, 2023 at 12:05 PM EST

(Reuters) - Dallas police arrested a 24-year-old man over the disappearance of two South American monkeys from the city's zoo earlier this week and charged him with six counts of animal cruelty, authorities said on Friday.Police identified the man as Davion Irvin, with whom the department wanted to speak after the disappearance of the emperor tamarin monkeys from the Dallas Zoo on Monday. The monkeys' habitat was intentionally compromised, which led officials to believe the animals were taken. Thanks to a tip, the animals were found the next day in an abandoned house in the Dallas suburb of Lancaster and returned to the zoo.The monkeys, Bella and Finn, were given health examinations and will spend time in quarantine before returning to their habitat, the zoo said."Our vet and animal-care teams have said, beyond losing a bit of weight, they show no signs of injury," the zoo said. The tip came from members of a church group next door to the Lancaster home, where authorities also discovered more animals, such as birds and cats, the Dallas Morning News reported, citing Tonya Thomas, the daughter of the church's pastor, as its source.Police declined to answer additional questions about the search of the home.Emperor tamarin monkeys are native to South America's Amazon River Basin. The small monkeys have red tails and long, white whiskers that resemble a moustache, according to the Smithsonian's National Zoo & Conservation Biology Institute.Their disappearance came just three weeks after a 25-pound (11.3-kg) clouded leopard escaped its enclosure through a hole that was intentionally cut in the fence. The cat was eventually found nearby.Police continue to investigate multiple cases of suspicious activity at the zoo, including the death of a 35-year-old vulture in its enclosure. It is not known if any of the incidents are linked.Considered a person of interest in the case of the monkeys, Irvin was taken in for questioning and later booked in the Dallas County Jail, police said. Bond was set at $25,000, according to jail records. It is not clear if Irvin has a lawyer.(Reporting by Tyler Clifford; Editing by Ben Dangerfield)

FDA Adviser Inadvertently Confirms Pfizer is Doing Gain-of-Function Research-by Will Jones | Daily Scepti-
February 2nd 2023, 6:04 am

They’re starting to come now – the ‘debunkings’ of the Pfizer undercover video sting, in which executive Jordon Trishton Walker, “Director of Research and Development – Strategic Operations and mRNA Scientific Planning”, tells his ‘date’ that Pfizer is looking to mutate the virus “so we could create preemptively developed new vaccines, right”.Pfizer released a statement on Friday, which notably did not deny that Dr. Walker works for the company (a fact which has anyway been confirmed via internet searches). Now the latest ‘debunking’ effort comes from Medpage Today. After making the odd claim that “it is currently unclear if the man in the video is actually an employee of Pfizer, and if that is his real name” (journalism isn’t what it used to be), writer Michael DePeau-Wilson notes that Pfizer’s statement “summarily debunk[ed] the claims made in the video”, as the company stated that it “has not conducted gain of function or directed evolution research” related to its “ongoing development of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine”.While it is true that the statement does say this, it also says that “we have conducted research where the original SARS-CoV-2 virus has been used to express the spike protein from new variants of concern”. Furthermore, it admits that:  When a full virus does not contain any known gain of function mutations, such virus may be engineered to enable the assessment of antiviral activity in cells. In addition, in vitro resistance selection experiments are undertaken in cells incubated with SARS-CoV-2 and nirmatrelvir in our secure Biosafety level 3 (BSL3) laboratory to assess whether the main protease can mutate to yield resistant strains of the virus.Despite the initial denial, then, what is being described here plainly is gain-of-function research – after all, the company is engineering the original virus to express the spike protein from new variants of concern, variants which are ‘of concern’ precisely because their spike protein has immune-evasive properties. In case there is any doubt about this, FDA vaccine adviser Dr. Paul Offit inadvertently confirms it in the Medpage piece. “Usually, when people talk about gaining function, they’re talking about making it so that the virus is either more deadly or more easily transmitted or that it now can jump species,” Dr. Offit says.“[T]rying to make the virus more immune-evasive or more contagious… would be considered gain-of-function research,” he adds.Right, so exactly what Pfizer has said it is doing – engineering “the original SARS-CoV-2 virus… to express the spike protein from new variants of concern”.Offit tries to obfuscate, stressing that “Pfizer has been working with an mRNA platform that is coded for coronavirus spike proteins, not a whole virus”. Yes, the vaccine does not use whole virus. But no one said it does. The matter at hand is what Pfizer is doing to the virus as part of its vaccine development research. And Pfizer is clear that it is engineering “the original SARS-CoV-2 virus… to express the spike protein from new variants of concern”. The whole virus, note. Offit then implies that it isn’t gain-of-function research because the variant has already been created by “mother nature” and Pfizer is just reproducing what nature has already done. If there was some evil hand back there that was trying to make the virus more immune-evasive or more contagious, that would be considered gain-of-function research, but it’s not happening. The evil hand is mother nature. But even if the variant already exists in nature, that doesn’t mean it’s not gain-of-function research to engineer a virus to gain the immune-evasive mutation in the lab. Besides, how can you be sure you’re producing the exact same variant and not some subtly (or not-so-subtly) new and more immune-evasive variant? Offit then appears to betray an ignorance of the process of making the vaccine, as he says the “remarkably effective” development involved sequencing SARS-CoV-2 in “a matter of months”. In fact, the virus was sequenced several times even in the last week of December 2019, and took a couple of days each time, not months.Perhaps needing to restore his reputation with the politico-medical establishment after his criticism of the boosters last month (is this why he was given the job of defending Pfizer?), he is now effusive with praise for the mRNA vaccines. “This is the best medical achievement in my lifetime,” he says. “And my lifetime includes the development of the polio vaccine.”Thus, despite the denials that what Pfizer is doing is gain-of-function research – denials which presumably take advantage of the fact that ‘gain-of-function’ is not rigorously defined – it’s clear that what Pfizer admits to doing falls squarely within the definition cited by Dr. Offit, namely the commonly accepted one, which includes making the virus more “immune-evasive”.And they appear to tacitly acknowledge that, which is why they make their excuses. In Pfizer’s case, that it is “required by U.S. and global regulators for all antiviral products” and “carried out by many companies and academic institutions in the U.S. and around the world”. In Offit’s case that Pfizer was just copying “mother nature”.In fact, though, as Dr. Robert Malone has pointed out, Pfizer has previously been upfront that it is doing this research, including in an August 2021 article in STAT News, and almost nothing in the undercover video is new. Why such a fuss was made about scrubbing it from the internet is therefore an interesting question – though this may be more linked to the sensation around it than the facts, which Pfizer’s response anyway did not deny. How could it, when those facts were already on public record? Perhaps the main lesson, then, is that we all need to be paying more attention. We also need to think hard about what kind of research should be allowed and what should be banned. The reaction to the Project Veritas video suggests a strong feeling that this kind of work should not be done – including when it is (supposedly) imitating what nature has already created. The fear in the public is real and justified, and relates to the folly of engineering viruses to make them worse. Can this ever be a good idea? My feeling is there’s no need to go beyond the viruses and variants nature already provides us with, and to stick to using real specimens, not engineered ones. But the current regulatory regime and scientific establishment clearly disagrees.Whatever the right answer, we need to be able to talk about this properly. Not be subject to global, military grade censorship when someone tries to raise the topic as a matter of public concern, albeit in a sensational (and entertaining) way.

Massive Peer-Reviewed Mask Study Shows ‘Little To No Difference’ In Preventing COVID, Flu Infection-by Zero Hedge-February 2nd 2023, 6:29 am

A massive international research collaboration that analyzed several dozen rigorous studies focusing on “physical interventions” against COVID-19 and influenza found that they provide little to no protection against infection or illness rates. The study, published in the peer-reviewed Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, is the strongest science to date refuting the basis for mask mandates worldwide. Nearly 60% of South Korea's population has now tested positive for COVID despite nearly three years of consistent universal masking with overwhelming compliance-When will it be enough for "experts" to admit masks don't work? pic.twitter.com/LS0JF9niog— Ian Miller (@ianmSC) January 25, 2023-And of course, the CDC still recommends masking in areas with “high” rates of transmission (fewer than 4% of US counties, as Just the News notes), along with indoor masking in areas with “medium” rates of transmission (27%).Masks are still required in educational institutions in Democratic strongholds such as New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Washington and California, according to the Daily Mail. Boston Public Schools denied its “temporary masking protocol” in early January was a “mandate,” following a public letter against the policy by student Enrique Abud Evereteze.South Korea is still requiring masks on public transport and in medical facilities after dropping COVID mandates in most indoor settings, including gyms, Monday, Reuters reported. -Just the News-According to the Cochrane study, which included the work of researchers at institutions in the  U.K., Canada, Australia, Italy and Saudi Arabia, a total of 78 studies were analyzed. Most recent additions to the meta-analysis were 11 new randomized controlled trials. As unlisted study author Carl Heneghan – who directs the Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine at the University of Oxford noted on Twitter: “Wearing masks in the community probably makes little or no difference to the outcome of influenza-like illness (ILI)/COVID-19 like illness compared to not wearing masks.”Wearing masks in the community probably makes little or no difference to the outcome of influenza-like illness (ILI)/COVID-19 like illness compared to not wearing masks (risk ratio (RR) 0.95, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.84 to 1.09; 9 trials, 276,917 participants-— Carl Heneghan (@carlheneghan) January 30, 2023-Harms were rarely measured and poorly reported (very low-certainty evidence).— Carl Heneghan (@carlheneghan) January 30, 2023-The Danish study had trouble finding a major journal willing to publish its controversial findings that wearing surgical masks had no statistically significant effect on infection rates, even among those who claimed to wear them “exactly as instructed.” Mainstream media overlooked red flags in the Bangladeshi mask study, which found no effect for surgical masks under age 50 and a difference of only 20 infections between control and treatment groups among 342,000 adults. -JTN-Bottom line, mask wearing “probably makes little to no difference,” when it comes to influenza-like or COVID-like illnesses, regardless of type of mask used.2/ LARGE Cochrane Rev (just published 1/30/23) of RCT data ALSO CONFIRMS NO BENEFIT of N95 masks vs. med/surg masks, in either community (n~8K) or HCW (n~8K) settings for prevention of flu-like illness or lab confirmed flu https://t.co/N4TkgI4uUR pic.twitter.com/0DCdYAPo7x— Andrew Bostom, MD, MS (@andrewbostom) January 31, 2023.

We’re sure the cult of Fauci will now start insisting peer-reviewed meta-analyses aren’t ‘the science.’Israeli startup develops first AI robot for picking tomatoes-MetoMotion says driverless machine slashes harvesting costs by 50%; startup seeks to raise $8 million to scale up production-By Sharon FEB 02,23-Wrobel    Today, 6:15 pm

Growing up in a kibbutz and working in agriculture from a young age, Adi Nir, founder of Israeli startup MetoMotion, left the fields, as many others did, to make a living in the tech industry. The widespread global shortage of fruit and vegetable pickers is what brought him back to his roots to develop the world’s first robot for picking tomatoes.Fewer and fewer people work in agriculture, which employs just 5% to 10% of the workforce in the European Union and euro area, and 6% in OECD countries, according to World Bank data. In Israel, only 1% of all Israeli workers are employed in agriculture, the data shows.Israeli farmers are also struggling with labor costs. Since few Israelis work in agriculture, growers need to bring foreign workers to Israel to do the tough manual work, but are limited by how many permits the government allocates, driving up salaries.“We hear many times about farmers leaving the crops to rot because there is no one to pick them,” Nir told The Times of Israel. “Today can’t grow tomatoes like 30 years ago — for them to be high quality and competitive in pricing, you need to do some transformation.”After graduating as an engineer from Haifa’s Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, Nir worked for 16 years in the aerospace and defense industry, managing R&D operations and developing cutting-edge system technology.Realizing that the shortage of manpower in the farming workforce and the related costs were unsustainable, and drawing from his tech experience in the aerospace industry, Nir founded the Yokne’am-based startup MetoMotion in 2017 to develop a robot that can do labor-intensive fruit-picking quickly and efficiently.Since then, MetoMotion has raised a total of $10 million from investors led by Israeli venture capital fund the Trendlines Group, Netherland-based greenhouse technology company Ridder, and another Dutch investor.“The idea was to help farmers solve the labor shortage problem as more and more young people are seeking more advanced occupations where they don’t need to use their hands or back,” Nir said.“We used the capabilities of artificial intelligence to develop a platform which is designed to work in a greenhouse environment, where you can produce high quality yield in different weather conditions with much less water than you do outside all year around.”“Unlike other robotic or industrial applications, which are characterized by more repetitive tasks, in agriculture every plant is a little bit different. So we came up with a solution based on AI capabilities to look at the plants, understand the structure, environment, how to measure the ripeness, and how to decide if it’s ready,” Nir said. The startup’s driverless robot has two robotic arms to pick and harvest tomatoes on both sides of a row simultaneously in high-tech greenhouses. The autonomous guided vehicle is equipped with AI-powered 3G sensor vision technology that generates a map of the plant and its crop. It drives down the greenhouse rows with the help of sensors that can detect obstacles to avoid accidents. The advanced vision system detects tomatoes ripe for picking and guides the robotic arm to the location, cuts and catches tomato branches in a single operation, and places the fruit on a conveyer belt before dropping it into onboard fruit container units, working at a speed of 16 seconds per cluster. The robotic arm clears away obstacles or hidden stems without causing any damage to the branches crop or plant. Once the driverless robot reaches the end of the row it stops and returns to the start of the row for its trailer to be removed and sent to the warehouse.MetoMotion decided to focus on tomato harvesting as about 50% of production costs are labor expenses.“More than 30% of the crops grown in greenhouses are tomatoes because we need them for a lot of things, for our salad, pizza, and ketchup,” said Nir. “Our robots are able to reduce the labor needs of harvesting by about 90% and cut production costs by about 50% by saving on manpower costs.”A fleet of five robots working in a 50,000-square-meter greenhouse will need about a week for the tomato harvest, Nir said.As the robots are cruising around the greenhouse for harvesting they also automatically collate data from sensors on the ripeness, the quantity, and weight and size of each tomato for better crop management. Using the data it is possible to predict the volume of output in each greenhouse to help generate yield forecasts and distribution analyses.“All this data is uploaded on a dashboard in a cloud system,” Nir noted. “You can digitize many of the tasks that we are doing today like looking at the diseases, pesticide and things like that.”For now, the tomato harvest robot is used at two greenhouse growers in the Netherlands. In Israel, the robot will be showcased for the first time this month at an agriculture conference. The startup, which employs about 15 engineers and agricultural experts in Yokne’am and four in the Netherlands, is currently seeking to raise $8 million in funds from investors to scale up production this year.Nir hopes to install about 10 to 20 of the robotic machines this year.“Our first target is in Western Europe — that is the Netherlands, France, Germany, Belgium, and all the countries around that region, and next is Canada and the US,” said Nir. “Apart from tomatoes, we also want to make use of the technology for different vegetables like cucumbers, eggplants, and peppers, which will also be available soon, because they are growing in the same environment.”Although MetoMotion’s focus is currently on fruit and vegetables, Nir already has his eyes set on another industry.“We see a lot of need coming from the cannabis industry, so this will probably be also added to our roadmap, but will require more modifications,” Nir said.“Every week I get an email from a farmer that has another crop that needs picking, whether avocados, oranges, grapes, coffee or tea.”

Interview-US Jewish leader Daroff warns: ‘Crisis of divisiveness’ is tearing Israel apart-Conference of Presidents head refrains from opining on judicial overhaul, but worries about how it’s perceived: Israel must ‘continue to be seen as beacon of freedom and democracy’-Judah Ari Gross-By Judah Ari Gross-FEB 02,23-Today, 4:47 pm

The head of the American Jewish community’s umbrella organization on Thursday said he was greatly concerned by the growing division in Israel, particularly over the government’s planned dramatic judicial overhaul, which critics warn will effectively remove remaining checks on executive power and destroy the country’s independent judiciary, and which supporters see as a necessary corrective to judicial overreach. The government’s proposals have prompted furious pushback, with tens of thousands of Israelis attending weekly Saturday night protests, accusing the coalition of planning a “constitutional coup” and eroding Israeli democracy. Supporters of the overhaul describe it as boosting democracy, as it puts more power in the hands of elected officials, and accuse detractors of being hypocritical and, in extreme cases, disloyal or traitorous.“I think there is a crisis of divisiveness here in Israel, where the country is being torn apart by political issues. There have been five elections of divisiveness. And much like in America — where we’re in this era without comity – that has continued here,” said William Daroff, chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, which represents dozens of US Jewish groups.“There’s a crisis in both countries of divisiveness, of not finding consensus, of political issues being weaponized into something more than they should be. That is of great concern,” Daroff told The Times of Israel.Daroff, who just marked his third year at the helm of the large umbrella group, is known for his reluctance to publicly weigh in on controversial issues, believing that the best way to have an influence in the long term is to discuss matters behind closed doors.Asked his thoughts on the judicial overhaul, Daroff refrained from comments on its specifics. “I don’t really want to opine on it, but the arguments I’ve heard on both sides make it clear to me that it’s not binary. I think a reasonable argument has been made that the system is not perfect. And the question is, are the reforms that have been proposed the right proposals to help perfect the system?” he said.Yet he said he was aware that the plan is currently perceived negatively in the US.“The discussions that I’ve had have been focused on the perception in America, among American Jewry and in the American government, of how these changes will affect Israel,” he said.“That is where the focus has been — talking about how the perception of these changes is one that is problematic, and to ensure, as I said, that the policies are explained in a way that will help to shed light on these changes.”Daroff sat down with The Times of Israel’s David Horovitz, Amanda Borschel-Dan and Judah Ari Gross on Thursday, ahead of his organization’s annual conference in Israel later this month.Though he pointedly refused to say so definitively, Daroff indicated that representatives from far-right parties would not be invited to speak at the conference. This is likely due to stiff opposition to their views by some members of the Conference of Presidents, notably representatives of the Reform and Conservative movements and other progressive groups, who have publicly stated their refusal to meet with the lawmakers. In the hour-long interview, Daroff reiterated his opposition to changes to the Law of Return, in light of proposals from the government to cut its “grandchild clause,” which grants citizenship to anyone with at least one Jewish grandparent. However, he stressed that this was his personal view, not the position of the Conference of Presidents, which is divided on the topic.“My view is the Law of Return is a part of the bedrock foundation of Zionism and what Israel is about. That Israel is a refuge for the Jewish people. And that efforts to limit that run contrary to the Zionist ideal. That’s not an official Conference position. It’s my view,” he said. What follows is a transcript of the interview, which has been edited for clarity and brevity. The Times of Israel: Let’s start with Israel’s new government and how its policies might affect you and American Jews and Diaspora Jews.William Daroff: Bottom line, Israel is a vibrant, robust democracy. Within that context, Israel debating, engaging in these issues, in these divisive issues, is important. In America, we similarly are in an age of divisiveness. And so when we look at the Israeli political situation, we see a mirror of the same sort of divisiveness we see in America, which is also after some 240 years working through growing pains of democracy. So I think it’s important to look at it in that context. One thing I’ve been saying to policymakers is that regardless of whether these issues are good or bad, you need to do a better job of explaining them to the American people, to the American Jewish communityGenerally speaking, we are deferential to Israeli citizens, to Israeli policymakers, to Israeli voters in how they go about conducting the internal affairs of Israel. But obviously, we have concerns about the tenor of the debate, about the discussion. And one thing I’ve been saying to policymakers is that regardless of whether these issues are good or bad, you need to do a better job of explaining them to the American people, to the American Jewish community — that the issues are complicated and muddled, and are ones that leave a lot of questions about the intent and the direction that the country is going, and that having a dialogue is important. That is why we’re here. As we approach the 50th almost consecutive year of doing these [Conference of Presidents] missions [to Israel], it’s about dialogue. It’s about understanding where Israel’s policymakers are and having Israel’s policymakers understand where the American Jewish community is. Our mission here will be, as it has been for nearly half a century, focused on increasing that dialogue and engaging with political leaders from across the spectrum. The formal mission starts on the 19th. Who will you be meeting with? We have confirmed [US Ambassador Tom] Nides, [Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu, [President Isaac] Herzog, [Defense Minister Yoav] Gallant, [Foreign Minister Eli] Cohen, [Strategic Affairs Minister Ron] Dermer, [Jerusalem’s] Mayor Moshe Lion, opposition leader [Yair] Lapid…[Otzma Yeshudit chief Itamar] Ben Gvir and [Religious Zionist party head Bezalel] Smotrich are people you wouldn’t want to host? We are meeting with a broad spectrum of members of the Knesset. At the Knesset we are meeting with two committees that will be holding hearings with us — the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee and the Aliya and Immigration Committee, as well as having a lunch hosted by the speaker at the Chagall Mural, at which there will be a potpourri of members of the Knesset; we’ve invited representatives of every party, so there will be engagement with every party, to the extent that they show up at the committee hearings and the lunch.Have you met in the past with Smotrich and/or Ben Gvir? I have not met with them. As far as I know the Conference has not either. The Conference mission lasts for almost a week. And you’ve not invited those two ministers, or MK Simcha Rothman [head of the Knesset’s Constitution, Law and Justice Committee and the son of American immigrants], to speak to the group? Our last mission was COVID-restricted. Our intent is to be further away from ministers speaking from podia and more to being out and about. So we are very limited in who we’re hearing. There are some plans by this new government that are Israel-Diaspora centered — such as conversions, the Law of Return. And then there are issues that ostensibly are internal but go to the heart of what Israel is. So first of all, on the issues that are of a direct Diaspora input such as the Law of Return, such as potential changes to the legitimization for citizenship purposes of conversions in Israel and so on, what are your thoughts on those specific issues? Our former chairman, Rabbi [Alexander] Schindler, the head of the Reform Movement, who was chairman around 1990, set forth a doctrine which is called the Schindler Doctrine within the Conference wherein we do not opine on the issues of religion and state. As one of the few bodies that has the Orthodox, Reform and Conservative underneath one umbrella, this was the mechanism wherein the Conference, 30 years ago, came forth with a way to have a Reform leader as our chairman and also to engage. Generally speaking, we don’t engage officially and formally on those sorts of issues — conversion bill, who’s a Jew, and the like because of the religion and state component of it.Law of Return isn’t who is a Jew, it’s who’s eligible for Israeli citizenship. That’s correct. The rabbinate does not decide. It’s Nativ, which is a political body. But the Orthodox components within the Conference have a different view than the non-Orthodox components within the Conference about the Law of Return, for instance. That being said, I did answer a question at a forum in Tel Aviv in November about the Law of Return, where I specifically stated that my view is the Law of Return is a part of the bedrock foundation of Zionism and what Israel is about. That Israel is a refuge for the Jewish people. And that efforts to limit that run contrary to the Zionist ideal. That’s not an official Conference position. It’s my view.My sense is, from Times of Israel reporting, that there will not be changes to the Law of Return and not to the grandfather clause anytime soon. And I think that that is noteworthy.I do agree with you and I have said that I think the Law of Return is an immigration issue, not a halachic issue. There are some who disagree because of the obvious domino impact that occurs in Israeli civil society, with folks who are given citizenship and this creates halachic issues.Beyond that, I think it’s important for Israeli policymakers to know where American Jewry stands on these issues. I think it’s important for us to know where Israeli policymakers are. I am very reticent to engage in a way that puts the Conference in the middle of a partisan political internal debate. However, many of our member organizations are deeply engaged in these issues.Around our own table, we have discussions about these issues, just like Israelis do and American Jews do around their Shabbat tables. And we for sure find it to be much more effective to speak in private than to speak publicly. That when I’m speaking to elected officials and they know that I come sincerely, I come without reporters in tow, without cameras in tow, without previewing the day before or talking the day after. It gives the Conference much more credibility to actually engage and have impact — the audience being the policymakers who can actually effect change rather than the readers of newspapers, for instance. Now, let us ask you about ostensibly internal changes, especially the judicial overhaul, which goes to the essence of what Israel is, in which you and all the people you represent have an immense stake. This is the homeland of the Jewish people and this is a country whose foundational principles were that it would be both democratic and Jewish, in a rich and tolerant sense, certainly not in a supremacist sense. Both of those core aspects of Israel appear to many Israelis to be in danger now. Do you have concerns, if so in what areas, and how do you think you might be able to help? This is an issue that also has a diverse set of opinions within the Conference, similar to Israeli civil society. We’re certainly concerned about ensuring that the ideal of Israel as set forth by the Declaration of Independence, the quality of minority rights, is upheld. It is important that Israel continues to be seen as a beacon of freedom and democracy in this region. The discussions that I’ve had have been focused on the perception in America, among American Jewry and in the American government, of how these changes will affect Israel. That is where the focus has been — talking about how the perception of these changes is one that is problematic, and to ensure, as I said, that the policies are explained in a way that will help to shed light on these changes. We’re certainly concerned about ensuring that the ideal of Israel as set forth by the Declaration of Independence, the quality of minority rights, is upheld.I am a lawyer, not an Israeli lawyer, but I’m a lawyer. And I can attest that looking at the judicial reform bill — and understanding your system is complex — I don’t think it’s as binary as saying that it’s all amazing or it’s all terrible. That murkiness is something that we would encourage there to be more explanations of.The bottom line is that for us to engage in this very divisive, critical issue, that is creating its own political and constitutional crisis here, the best way to engage in that is not in the pages of The Times of Israel, but is to engage privately with the parties — to help guide them in a more productive direction. You’re talking about the perception and a murkiness rather than the substance.I don’t really want to opine on it, but the arguments I’ve heard on both sides make it clear to me that it’s not binary. I think a reasonable argument has been made that the system is not perfect. And the question is, are the reforms that have been proposed the right proposals to help perfect the system? You’re talking about listening to different people and then being able to guide. Who are you guiding? Looking to guide Israeli policymakers to incorporate the views of American Jewry in their policymaking. So you see yourself as an ambassador of American Jewry, speaking in a nonpartisan, non-religious kind of role — a sane voice and an objective voice? Absolutely. I see the role of the Conference as being an interlocutor, an ambassador, between American Jewry and the Israeli government, Israeli civil society, the American government, American civil society, as well as other governments across the world where we engage on behalf of the interests of the American Jewish community in those countries. Engaging with a country on behalf of their own Jews, for instance, there are some countries where our relationship with the political leadership there is better than the local Jewish community has with their political leadership, where we’re able to use the weight of American Jewry in order to get attention in a way that the local community can’t, as well as engaging with countries, like in the Gulf and elsewhere, where it serves American interests, American Jewish communal interest. Are you concerned that this is a worrying moment for Israel, that we have a very hard right government whose declared agenda includes, apart from the legal overhaul, legislation that would enable you to refuse to provide service on the grounds of it countering your religious beliefs. There was talk about lifting a ban on racists running for the Knesset. These are stances that do not seem to comport with the ethos and values of the Declaration of Independence. Is that a perception around your Conference table? In the conference, we work by consensus. We generally do not take votes. We look to see where the consensus of the groups are, in a way that brings together the 53 organizations rather than dividing and bringing them apart. The powers-that-be here should seek consensus, should find ways to push forward policy proposals that bring together the Israeli people rather than divide them. There is certainly a concern that, as Israel looks to engage in these major changes, the powers-that-be here should seek consensus, should find ways to push forward policy proposals that bring together the Israeli people rather than divide them.So I am encouraged, for instance, by efforts by President Herzog to bring people together to find consensus. Without opining on the substance of the underlying issues, I think bringing people together, finding consensus, and looking for ways to decrease divisiveness in society would be a noble pursuit. Are you concerned about Israel increasingly alienating itself from parts of the Diaspora? Or do you not see that happening? Are you hearing concerns in the American Jewish community about what is happening to Israel? For as long as I can remember, the American Jewish community has had concerns about Israel, about various components of Israel, about various initiatives, about how Israel conducts itself on a potpourri of issues. And that certainly continues today.I do believe that the rancor here is one that does promote rancor in America among American Jewry, and that there’s certainly a concern about that divisiveness. What did you make of the secretary of state, on his visit, weighing in publicly with a long list of “Hey, remember what democracy is”? The place where the Conference can have the most impact is in the bilateral relationship between the two governments, between the White House and the Prime Minister’s Office, between the Congress and the Knesset. And our goal is to ensure that despite the noise, despite the news cycles, despite the crisis of the moment, that whatever the crisis of the moment is, whether it’s a terror attack or an IDF Jenin incident, that there are lines of communication that are open between the two governments, that there is a common language and that there’s a process in place to ensure that the relationship doesn’t go off the rails. What we’re seeing from the US and from Israel is a process to decompress and to engage together. Tom Nides has been spectacular in engaging with the political leadership here. And then that continued with [US National Security Adviser] Jake Sullivan coming, to work through some more of the specifics, and then Secretary [Antony] Blinken to put the icing on the cake. Presumably, the next step will be the prime minister and the president meeting sometime in the next couple of months. It is noteworthy and commendable that they’re working through these issues and that they are intentionally looking to ensure that the discussions happen privately, behind closed doors.Have you met with Amichai Chikli, the new Diaspora affairs minister, yet? Via Zoom. We’d met previously, but the Zoom and WhatsApp discussions I’ve had with him since [he took ministerial office] have been more intense. I’ve developed a deeper relationship with him over the last month.Do you see him as a significant conduit in terms of American Jewry speaking to Israel?I understand Chikli’s had a lot of meetings. I understand he’s had two conversations with [US Reform leader Rabbi] Rick Jacobs, for instance. I’m impressed so far. He is looking to be engaged with the full mosaic of American Jewry and to be a conduit for engagement here, as well as taking over [responsibility for tackling] the delegitimization and antisemitism [issues]. So in that context also, there will certainly be engagement. So all signs are positive. We have good interaction. He seems to be very engaged and he’s been outwardly focused on trying to work with us and get to know the American Jewish community. In terms of the declared direction of this government, in the context of the battle against BDS, does it make the battle harder if you’ve got a government that seems to be set on a particularly difficult course? When you have some mainstream Israelis using the “fascist” word against the Israeli government? I think it’s important for all parties to use language that is appropriate, respectful and proportionate to the issues involved. Calling anyone who criticizes Israel an antisemite is wrong. Certainly, antisemites criticize Israel a lot, but certainly not everyone who criticizes Israel in any given issue is as antisemite. Just look again around your Shabbat tables and our Shabbat tables. I encourage a tone that brings people together, that tries to cut through the divisiveness and will lead toward a consensus. Obviously, language that demonizes one’s opponents, whether from the left or the right, is unhelpful. The last time we spoke was a little bit after the British Board of Deputies had told Bezalel Smotrich to get back on his plane. You and [the Conference’s longtime executive vice chairman] Malcolm [Hoenlein] were generally deferential and sought to keep [such attitudes] private. Within days of the election, some of your member organizations were openly referring to members of this government as racists, homophobic, bigoted, you name it. Is the US Jewish policy of deference going to last? There are elements of the American Jewish community that are supportive of every element of the Israeli political system. There are elements of the American Jewish community who have an affinity toward the Labor Party. There are elements of the American Jewish community who have an affinity toward the Religious Zionism party. It wouldn’t surprise me if those various elements hosted the members of Knesset with whom they have an affinity for events in America. There are probably many more American Jews who are supportive of Labor than Religious Zionism. If you’re saying that the Conference is looking for consensus, that suggests small minorities have a disproportionate amount of control over what the conference does and doesn’t say. So how do you see your role in terms of representing American Jews as a group? We’re seeking consensus within the Conference. Unity doesn’t mean unanimity. So there are a variety of different viewpoints that are represented. We have discussions internally that help us seek consensus and help us assess how to address these issues. Will Smotrich be a persona non grata in America? There are some American Jewish groups that have an affinity for him and his party who, my guess, would make him persona grata. You choose very carefully when to speak and when not to speak, dancing between raindrops… When you’re seated around the Conference table and the more conservative Orthodox elements know that you’re not going to raise a fuss over conversion or things like that, does the more left-leaning element use this and say, Hey, let us, yes, take a stand about this particular issue? Is that in the mix at all? Our table is not really one where there’s horse-trading per se, where there’s that sort of bargaining. Our position is baked in to the DNA of the organization at this point, after 30 years. But again, we have discussions about these issues. We just don’t opine on them. There’s a dialogue that occurs amongst the organizations at our table, looking for common ground, looking for consensus, looking for a way to bring together disparate parts of the community. What the Schindler doctrine does is keep us from speaking publicly about these issues as a way of encouraging that internal dialogue and encouraging a place where folks, regardless of the size of their kippa, feel like they can sit and have that discussion. You say there are parts of the American Jewish public where Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben Gvir are persona non grata. Since you’re looking for consensus, does that mean that they’re not going to appear before the Conference of Presidents? I meant they’re likely not going to appear at the Americans for Peace Now banquet, for sure.
Deputy Minister Avi Maoz seen during a vote in the assembly hall of the Knesset, on December 28, 2022. (Olivier Fitoussi/Flash90)-But if Americans for Peace Now say he’s a red line for us, does that mean he’s not going to appear at the Conference of Presidents? Or take Avi Maoz, who is reportedly looking to limit the ability of American organizations and American foundations to put funding toward initiatives in the Israeli education system…On many of these issues, we’ll follow the guidance provided by the prime minister that the buck stops with him and that he is responsible for the actions of his government. That’s what he told the American government. That’s what he told Bari Weiss. And I think Jake Tapper, too…As it relates to issues like that, it will fall back on the prime minister to ensure that on LGBT issues, for instance, that the government doesn’t go off the cliff.A final question, coming back to what you were saying at the beginning about concerns about the murkiness and the way that this is being presented, as opposed to concerns that Israel is on a dangerous path and is facing a moment of crisis. Is it the case that you do think it’s a moment of crisis, but you’re constrained in saying so, or that you think the critics are hysterical and overreacting? Is it that you think that the way to handle any such concerns is a behind-the-scenes, quiet approach? Certainly, a behind-the-scenes approach is, in my view, more effective. I think there is a crisis of divisiveness here in Israel, where the country is being torn apart by political issues. There have been five elections of divisiveness. And much like in America — where as I described before, where we’re in this era without comity –that has continued here. There’s a crisis in both countries of divisiveness, of not finding consensus, of political issues being weaponized into something more than they should be. That is of great concern.

The Canadian PressThe Canadian Press-Liberals table bill delaying medically assisted dying expansion to March 2024-Thu, February 2, 2023 at 4:32 p.m.

OTTAWA — The federal government is delaying the expansion of its medically assisted dying regime to people whose sole condition is a mental disorder for another year because it says more time is needed to prepare health-care practitioners and systems across the country. On Thursday, Justice Minister David Lametti introduced the bill seeking to delay extending the eligibility until March 17, 2024."We need to be prudent. We need to move step by step, making sure that people within the profession, Canadian society at large, has internalized this step," Lametti told reporters."To be honest, we could have gone forward with the original date, but we want to be sure. We want to be safe. We want everybody to be on the same page."The Liberal government agreed to expand eligibility in its 2021 update to the assisted dying law after senators amended the bill. The senators argued that excluding people with mental illness would violate their rights. That law put a two-year deadline on the expansion that is set to expire on March 17.The Liberals now have six weeks to pass the new legislation.Carolyn Bennett, the federal minister for mental health and addictions, said the "extra time" would help ensure the people assessing these cases, and the practitioners carrying out the assisted dying process, "to know that they have done it in exactly the way that the experts and the patients deserve."She said certain provinces had also indicated they weren't ready.Madeline Li, a psychiatrist who sits on several assisted dying-related panels, said the delay is a "reasonably foreseeable" amount of time."It's really about preparing health-care providers to more carefully assess patients, and the way we do that is by rolling out training, in terms of how to assess patients with mental disorders, how to properly evaluate capacity, how to consider vulnerability factors," she said. She added that the process of developing that training is ongoing, and time will be needed to disseminate it across the country to doctors and nurse practitioners who want to provide assisted dying to those who only have a mental disorder.Federal officials said that the delay will allow more time for the government to develop practice standards for assessing the more complex assisted dying requests. The explanation was given during a technical briefing to media provided on the agreement the officials would not be named. Those standards will have to be adapted by provincial and territorial regulators and clinicians, a process that is currently expected to take place in March.Officials said an accredited medical assistance in dying curriculum is also being developed for clinicians. It is expected to be rolled out in the fall and completed by the end of the year.Bennett said the curriculum for practitioners is "pretty well ready," but the delay will give them more time to "actually learn what is in the modules."Officials said the delay is also allowing the government to better collect and report data on assisted dying cases. They are expecting a relatively small number of new applicants to apply as a result of the expansion.New regulations that allow for "enhanced data collection" came into force at the beginning of the year. The data will go beyond simple demographic details to look at how alternative treatments were offered and considered before the assisted dying process.Lametti said he has agreement from the NDP and the Bloc Québécois to pass the bill in the short time available.NDP MP Alistair MacGregor said in a statement that he had been concerned about the expansion and wholeheartedly supports the delay."The Liberals can’t just delay the expansion. They need to get better supports and treatment options for people suffering with mental illness," he said. The Senate will also need to approve the move to push the expansion into next year.Helen Long, CEO of advocacy organization Dying With Dignity Canada, said she was "deeply disappointed" on behalf of the individuals who have been waiting to apply under the expanded program."I feel like it's a long delay. We would have hoped it would have been something shorter," she said."And I think for those people who have treatment-resistant mental disorders who've been excluded from the right to apply, this just continues to deny them compassion and extend their suffering."Long argued that keeping people with mental disorders from accessing assisted dying is discriminatory and perpetuates stigma that they do not have the capacity to make their own health-care decisions. But the government heard from many voices saying to "slow this down," Lametti said Thursday."And at that point it became a question of how long. And those negotiations have led to where we are today."Conservative MP Michael Cooper said on Twitter that the delay is not enough and the "dangerous expansion" needs to be scrapped altogether.Tories have argued that it is difficult for doctors to tell when a person's suffering due to a mental disorder is past the point of treatment, so the policy could lead to avoidable deaths."One year won't resolve the problems. Experts are clear that irremediability cannot be determined for mental illness," Cooper said. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Feb. 2, 2023.David Fraser, The Canadian Press

Macron warns Netanyahu over judicial overhaul, settlements-French president tells visiting PM that Jerusalem is moving away from ‘common conception of democracy’; Netanyahu says he must give coalition something on settlements-By Lazar-Berman-FEB 3,23-Today, 12:38 pm

PARIS — French President Emmanuel Macron warned Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Thursday night that if there are not changes to his government’s far-reaching plans to overhaul the judicial system, “Paris should conclude that Israel has emerged from a common conception of democracy,” an official with knowledge of the conversation confirmed.Macron’s remarks, which were not included in the French readout of the meeting at the Elysee Palace, were first reported by Le Monde. An official updated on the details of meeting confirmed the report to The Times of Israel. At the meeting, Macron “expressed bluntly” that the proposed judicial shakeup table “threatens to break the power of the Supreme Court, the only institutional counter-power in the government.”The French president also said the proposal “opens a crisis unprecedented since the birth of the state in 1948.”According to a different official with knowledge of the proceedings, Netanyahu responded that the Supreme Court was becoming too intrusive and weakening economic development. “Israel has gone from a state of law to a state of lawyers,” he said, adding that he wants to restore the balance between branches that exists in other democracies. He also explained that it would take a Knesset “supermajority” to overturn rulings, according to the official, but did not explain further. Netanyahu’s office declined to comment on the content of a closed meeting. The sit-down, the first between the two leaders since Netanyahu returned to power in late December, had all the trappings of a warm encounter, despite the harsh warning. After Netanyahu arrived, he and Macron embraced on the palace steps before waving to the cameras before heading for a two-hour-long dinner meeting with their advisors.Netanyahu had five aides in the meeting, and Macron had eight.Disagreement over Iranian red line-According to the Elysee, Macron blasted Iran’s “headlong rush” to develop its nuclear program. Netanyahu meanwhile urged France to back enhanced sanctions against Iran and to increase deterrence against the Islamic Republic and its proxies during talks. There was some disagreement between the two over what the West’s red line should be. Netanyahu urged a red line at 90% enrichment, while Macron said it should be weaponization of its nuclear program. Both leaders agreed to work together to deter Iran, but did not speak about specific operations.“France and Israel are drawing much closer in the way they see the Iran threat,” Netanyahu told Israeli journalists in a Friday briefing.“Macron expressed his readiness to weigh sanctions on the IRGC,” he continued, stressing that they spoke about “concrete matters.”“The worry is shared,” said Netanyahu, adding that he found much more understanding and willingness to act in Europe and the US than in the past.Military ‘things’ to Ukraine-On Ukraine, Netanyahu expressed a willingness to send “military things” to Kyiv, according to an official with knowledge of the conversation. At the same time, he underscored that he could not go too far without provoking Russia. The Prime Minister’s Office declined to comment on the conversation. In the briefing with journalists, Netanyahu would say only that “I explained our policies. He knows the issue well.”Netanyahu did not speak about Foreign Minister Eli Cohen’s upcoming trip to Kyiv.He told Macron that “it is too early to think about mediation,” He explained that he would not push his role as a mediator between Russia and Ukraine until Russia, Ukraine and the US asked him to do.No annexation-Not surprisingly, the two discussed tensions between Israel and the Palestinians at length.Netanyahu pledged to the French president that there “will be no annexation,” according to the official. The prime minister said he must give something to his coalition in terms of settlements, but that it would be “much less” than coalition partners Itamar Ben Gvir and Beztalel Smotrich desire.Macron also pressed Netanyahu on rising violence between Israel and the Palestinians, urging Israel to avoid “any measures that could fuel the spiral of violence,” the palace said. The French president also delivered a warning on Netanyahu’s attempts to widen the Abraham Accords. “If you continue what you are doing in Palestine, it will be difficult for Saudi Arabia to accept an agreement with you,” Macron said.Macron called Netanyahu on Monday to express condolences over a deadly terror attack that killed seven Israelis and injured three in Jerusalem on Friday. The two decided on the visit during the conversation. They last met in Jerusalem in January 2020.

‘We’re here to stay’: Settlers say over 500,000 Israelis now living in West Bank-Group predicts new government will launch massive settlement construction program, while Palestinians see another sign Israel has abandoned two-state solution-By AP and TOI staff-Today, 12:29 pm-FEB 2,23

The West Bank’s Israeli settler population now makes up more than half a million people, crossing a major threshold, a pro-settler group said Thursday. Settler leaders predicted even faster population growth under Israel’s new ultranationalist government. The report, by WestBankJewishPopulationStats.com and said to be based on official figures, showed the settler population grew to 502,991 as of January 1, rising more than 2.5 percent in 12 months and nearly 16% over the last five years.“We’ve reached a huge hallmark,” said Baruch Gordon, the director of the group and a resident of the Beit El settlement. “We’re here to stay.”The milestone comes as the new government, made up of far-right parties that oppose Palestinian statehood, has placed expanding settlements a priority. Already the government has pledged to legalize wildcat outposts that have long enjoyed tacit government support and to ramp up approval and construction of settler homes around the West Bank.“I think that in the coming years of this government there will be more building than there has been in the last 20 years of governments,” Gordon said.Settlements have flourished under most Israeli governments, including at the height of the peace process in the 1990s. Even the short-lived previous government, which included parties supporting Palestinian statehood along with those opposing it, continued to expand settlements. The report also comes as a new spasm of violence is shaking the region and days after a visit by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who pledged support for an independent Palestinian state. The settler population has continued to grow under the Biden administration, despite renewed American appeals to rein in construction following years of former US president Donald Trump’s hands-off approach. The settler population report does not include East Jerusalem, which Israel captured along with the West Bank in the 1967 Six Day War and later annexed.Much of the international community considers Jewish neighborhoods in East Jerusalem, home to a further 200,000 people, to be settlements. The Palestinians demand the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip, currently ruled by the Hamas terror group, for a future state.Much of the international community views the settlements as illegitimate and an obstacle to peace. The Palestinians see them as a land grab that undermines their chances to establish a viable, contiguous state.“All settlements are illegal. There is no legitimacy for settlements or the presence of settlers in the Palestinian territories,” said Nabil Abu Rudeineh, a spokesman for Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. “The increase in the number of settlers is the result of Israeli government policies that do not believe in the two-state solution,” which would create an independent Palestinian state next to Israel.Israel says the West Bank is disputed territory, rather than occupied, saying the latter terminology denies the Jewish people’s historical presence in the land. It argues that the fate of settlements should be part of negotiations to bring about an end to the conflict.Peace efforts have been moribund for nearly 15 years, while Israel continued to establish facts on the ground with more settlement construction and as a Palestinian political rivalry and paralysis complicated peacemaking. The settlers and their many supporters in government view the West Bank as the biblical and historical heartland of the Jewish people and are opposed to any partition.Palestinians and Israelis in the West Bank live under a two-tiered legal system that grants settlers special status and applies much of Israeli law to them, including the right to vote in Israeli elections and the ability to access certain public services. Palestinians live under Israeli military rule and they do not enjoy the legal rights and protections afforded to settlers. The situation has led three well-known human rights groups to conclude that Israel is committing the international crime of apartheid by systematically denying Palestinians equal rights. Israel rejects those accusations as an attack on its very existence as a Jewish-majority state and points to the achievements of its citizens of Palestinian origin to counter the argument. The increasingly authoritarian and unpopular Palestinian Authority, established through agreements with Israel in the 1990s, administers parts of the West Bank, while the Hamas terror group controls Gaza.

New government said reviewing Israel’s policies on Russian invasion of Ukraine-Axios says policy review includes possibility of supplying defense weaponry to Ukraine — but Israeli official predicts major shift unlikely, rules out missile defense systems-By TOI staff-FEB 2,23-Today, 6:43 pm

The new government is reviewing Israel’s policies regarding the Russian invasion of Ukraine, including the possibility of supplying Kyiv with defensive weapons systems, according to a report Thursday.Citing three unnamed Israeli officials, the Axios news site reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the policy review shortly after returning to office in late December, and brought up the matter with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken when they met Monday in Jerusalem. The premier reportedly emphasized to Blinken that his government will not reduce humanitarian aid and support for Ukraine compared to the previous government, with a senior Israeli official saying US President Joe Biden’s administration knows Netanyahu will not shift Israel’s position closer to Russia.A senior Israeli official cited in the report also said a growing number of defense and intelligence officials would like Jerusalem to help Kyiv militarily without causing a divide with Moscow, such as through indirect transfers of Israeli-manufactured systems. It was not clear what armaments were under consideration, but the official said the policy review was unlikely to lead to any significant change and stressed Israel will not send missile defense systems, as Kyiv has lobbied for.Netanyahu hinted at a potential policy shift in an interview with CNN aired Tuesday, saying he was “looking into” providing Kyiv with “other kinds of aid” besides humanitarian help, amid concerns over Israel’s “complex relationship” with Russia and its need to retain “freedom of action” in Syria in its effort to “keep Iran in check.”When meeting Netanyahu on Monday, Blinken obliquely urged Israel to expand its support for Kyiv, saying that “Russia’s ongoing atrocities only underscore the importance of providing support for all of Ukraine’s needs – humanitarian, economic, and security.”Blinken raised the matter again when later meeting with Foreign Minister Eli Cohen, gently critiquing Israel’s position on the Russia-Ukraine war once again. “We appreciate Israel’s humanitarian assistance,” said Blinken, adding that “we look forward to discussing what more can we do.”Israel has sought to maintain a neutral stance on the war, keeping channels open with both Russia and Ukraine. Israel refused to arm Kyiv over fears of angering Moscow, concerned that doing so would jeopardize its decade-long campaign in Syria to prevent the entrenchment of Iran on its northern border. Russia, which has advanced air defenses in Syria, largely refrained from interfering with Israeli airstrikes. The issue has strained ties between Jerusalem and Kyiv, as the Ukrainians have consistently pressed Israel to provide more defense aid.Following the CNN interview, Russia warned Israel against arming Ukraine.“We say that all countries that supply weapons [to Ukraine] should understand that we will consider these [weapons] to be legitimate targets for Russia’s armed forces,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told reporters. The Kremlin has warned of an escalation in the conflict as Ukraine’s Western partners vow to supply more weapons to Kyiv.“Any attempts — implemented or even unrealized but announced for the supply of additional, new or some other weapons — will lead to an escalation of this crisis. And everyone should be aware of this,” Zakharova said. The warning from Moscow also comes after reports in recent weeks that Israel has refused requests from the US to hand over 10 Hawk anti-aircraft batteries and hundreds of interceptor missiles for delivery to Ukraine. However, The New York Times reported last month that the US military was quietly shipping hundreds of thousands of artillery shells to Ukraine from a massive stockpile it stores in Israel.AFP contributed to this report.

19 The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved, the earth is moved exceedingly.
20 The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again.
21 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall punish the host of the high ones that are on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth.

EZEKIEL 38:1-23
1 And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
2  Son of man, set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him,
3  And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal:
4  And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws, and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords:
5  Persia,(IRAN,IRAQ) Ethiopia, and Libya with them; all of them with shield and helmet:
6  Gomer,(GERMANY) and all his bands; the house of Togarmah (TURKEY) of the north quarters, and all his bands: and many people with thee.(AFRICAN MUSLIMS,SUDAN,TUNESIA ETC)
7  Be thou prepared, and prepare for thyself, thou, and all thy company that are assembled unto thee, and be thou a guard unto them.
8  After many days thou shalt be visited: in the latter years thou shalt come into the land that is brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people, against the mountains of Israel, which have been always waste: but it is brought forth out of the nations, and they shall dwell safely all of them.
9  Thou shalt ascend and come like a storm, thou shalt be like a cloud to cover the land, thou, and all thy bands, and many people with thee.
10  Thus saith the Lord GOD; It shall also come to pass, that at the same time shall things come into thy mind, and thou shalt think an evil thought:
11  And thou shalt say, I will go up to the land of unwalled villages; I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates,
12  To take a spoil, and to take a prey; to turn thine hand upon the desolate places that are now inhabited, and upon the people that are gathered out of the nations, which have gotten cattle and goods, that dwell in the midst of the land.
13  Sheba, and Dedan, and the merchants of Tarshish, with all the young lions thereof, shall say unto thee, Art thou come to take a spoil? hast thou gathered thy company to take a prey? to carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and goods, to take a great spoil?(OIL IS IN SPOIL-I BELIEVE THATS WHY RUSSIA,ARAB/MUSLIMS MARCH TO ISRAEL)
14  Therefore, son of man, prophesy and say unto Gog, Thus saith the Lord GOD; In that day when my people of Israel dwelleth safely, shalt thou not know it?
15  And thou shalt come from thy place out of the north parts, thou, and many people with thee, all of them riding upon horses, a great company, and a mighty army:
16  And thou shalt come up against my people of Israel, as a cloud to cover the land; it shall be in the latter days, and I will bring thee against my land, that the heathen may know me, when I shall be sanctified in thee, O Gog, before their eyes.
17  Thus saith the Lord GOD; Art thou he of whom I have spoken in old time by my servants the prophets of Israel, which prophesied in those days many years that I would bring thee against them?
18  And it shall come to pass at the same time when Gog shall come against the land of Israel, saith the Lord GOD, that my fury shall come up in my face.
19  For in my jealousy and in the fire (atomic bomb) of my wrath have I spoken, Surely in that day there shall be a great shaking in the land of Israel;
20  So that the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the heaven, and the beasts of the field, and all creeping things that creep upon the earth, and all the men that are upon the face of the earth, shall shake at my presence, and the mountains shall be thrown down, and the steep places shall fall, and every wall shall fall to the ground.
21  And I will call for a sword against him throughout all my mountains, saith the Lord GOD: every man’s sword shall be against his brother.
22  And I will plead against him with pestilence (biological, chemical, nuclear) and with blood; and I will rain upon him, and upon his bands, and upon the many people that are with him, an overflowing rain, and great hailstones, fire, and brimstone.(NUKED,THEN MIGRATING BIRDS EAT RUSSIA/ARAB/MUSLIMS FLESH)
23  Thus will I magnify myself, and sanctify myself; and I will be known in the eyes of many nations, and they shall know that I am the LORD.

EZEKIEL 39:1-29
1 Therefore, thou son of man, prophesy against Gog, and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal:
2  And I will turn thee back, and leave but the sixth part of thee,(300 MILIION RUSSIA-ARAB-MUSLIMS GET NUKED BY ISRAEL) and will cause thee to come up from the north parts, and will bring thee upon the mountains of Israel:
3  And I will smite thy bow out of thy left hand, and will cause thine arrows to fall out of thy right hand.
4  Thou shalt fall upon the mountains of Israel, thou,(RUSSIA) and all thy bands,(RUSSIA SUPPORTED WITH WEAPONS-ARAB/MUSLIM COUNTRIES) and the people that is with thee: I will give thee unto the ravenous birds of every sort, and to the beasts of the field to be devoured.
5  Thou shalt fall upon the open field: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord GOD.
6  And I will send a fire (ATOMIC BOMB) on Magog, and among them that dwell carelessly in the isles: and they shall know that I am the LORD.
7  So will I make my holy name known in the midst of my people Israel; and I will not let them pollute my holy name any more: and the heathen shall know that I am the LORD, the Holy One in Israel.
8  Behold, it is come, and it is done, saith the Lord GOD; this is the day whereof I have spoken.
9  And they that dwell in the cities of Israel shall go forth, and shall set on fire and burn the weapons, both the shields and the bucklers, the bows and the arrows, and the handstaves, and the spears, and they shall burn them with fire seven years:
10  So that they shall take no wood out of the field, neither cut down any out of the forests; for they shall burn the weapons with fire: and they shall spoil those that spoiled them, and rob those that robbed them, saith the Lord GOD.
11  And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will give unto Gog a place there of graves in Israel, the valley of the passengers on the east of the sea: and it shall stop the noses of the passengers: and there shall they bury Gog and all his multitude: and they shall call it The valley of Hamongog.
12  And seven months shall the house of Israel be burying of them, that they may cleanse the land.
13  Yea, all the people of the land shall bury them; and it shall be to them a renown the day that I shall be glorified, saith the Lord GOD.
14  And they shall sever out men of continual employment, passing through the land to bury with the passengers those that remain upon the face of the earth, to cleanse it: after the end of seven months shall they search.
15  And the passengers that pass through the land, when any seeth a man’s bone, then shall he set up a sign by it, till the buriers have buried it in the valley of Hamongog.
16  And also the name of the city shall be Hamonah. Thus shall they cleanse the land.
17  And, thou son of man, thus saith the Lord GOD; Speak unto every feathered fowl, and to every beast of the field, Assemble yourselves, and come; gather yourselves on every side to my sacrifice that I do sacrifice for you, even a great sacrifice upon the mountains of Israel, that ye may eat flesh, and drink blood.
18  Ye shall eat the flesh of the mighty, and drink the blood of the princes of the earth, of rams, of lambs, and of goats, of bullocks, all of them fatlings of Bashan.
19  And ye shall eat fat till ye be full, and drink blood till ye be drunken, of my sacrifice which I have sacrificed for you.
20  Thus ye shall be filled at my table with horses and chariots, with mighty men, and with all men of war, saith the Lord GOD.
21  And I will set my glory among the heathen, and all the heathen shall see my judgment that I have executed, and my hand that I have laid upon them.
22  So the house of Israel shall know that I am the LORD their God from that day and forward.
23  And the heathen shall know that the house of Israel went into captivity for their iniquity: because they trespassed against me, therefore hid I my face from them, and gave them into the hand of their enemies: so fell they all by the sword.
24  According to their uncleanness and according to their transgressions have I done unto them, and hid my face from them.
25  Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Now will I bring again the captivity of Jacob, and have mercy upon the whole house of Israel, and will be jealous for my holy name;
26  After that they have borne their shame, and all their trespasses whereby they have trespassed against me, when they dwelt safely in their land, and none made them afraid.
27  When I have brought them again from the people, and gathered them out of their enemies’ lands, and am sanctified in them in the sight of many nations;
28  Then shall they know that I am the LORD their God, which caused them to be led into captivity among the heathen: but I have gathered them unto their own land, and have left none of them any more there.
29  Neither will I hide my face any more from them: for I have poured out my spirit upon the house of Israel, saith the Lord GOD.

Canada's new anti-Islamophobia representative apologizes for comments about Quebecer-Mickey Djuric-The Canadian Press-Updated Feb. 1, 2023 9:55 p.m. PST

OTTAWA -Canada's new special representative on combating Islamophobia has apologized for words that hurt Quebecers after leaders in that province called for her resignation.Amira Elghawaby apologized in English before a meeting on Wednesday with Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet."As a member of Canada's Muslim community, we know what it's like to be stereotyped. We know what it's like for people to have biases, and I understand the words and the way that I have said them have hurt people in Quebec," Elghawaby said."I have been listening very carefully. I have heard you, and I know what you are feeling. And I am sorry."Following the meeting, Elghawaby said that their conversation was constructive, but they "agree to disagree" when it comes to Quebec's Bill 21.The law has been heavily criticized — including by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau — for discriminating against members of religious minorities by banning them from wearing religious symbols at their public-service workplaces."Our (Muslim) communities have expressed the ways that it is impacting them, and that is going to remain my message: this is a discriminatory bill," Elghawaby told reporters."That being said, the way that we're going to move forward on these types of different conversations is by being able to listen, and ensuring the ways we talk about these issues aren't hurtful on either side."She said that moving forward, the dialogue needs to be free from "conflict journalism" and "conflict politics," because those who are caught in the middle are everyday people.Multiple politicians in Quebec have called for Elghawaby's appointment to be rescinded because of comments she made in a 2019 opinion piece. The column, co-written with former Canadian Jewish Congress CEO Bernie Farber, cited polling data to say that "a majority of Quebecers" who supported Bill 21 also held anti-Muslim views.Farber and Elghawaby, a journalist and human-rights activist, were board members with the Canadian Anti-Hate Network at the time.Trudeau said after the apology on Wednesday that it demonstrated the extent to which she is a sensitive person who is open to others' concerns and wants to "build bridges" in a difficult file.Quebec Secularism Minister Jean-François Roberge said he appreciates Elghawaby's apology but it does not change his government's view."I still don't believe she has the credibility, the legitimacy to occupy the role the prime minister has given her," he told reporters in French. "I think that now, the second thing for her to do is to submit her resignation."Earlier Wednesday, Trudeau said Quebec has a complicated history with religion, citing the oppression of the Catholic Church in the province before the Quiet Revolution largely removed the church from government services including health care and education. He said it is important to him that all Canadians understand that before the Quiet Revolution, Quebecers "suffered the yoke and the attacks on individual rights and freedoms of an oppressive church.""And that comes with it a certain perspective around what secularism is, and the role of religion in society that informs what modern Quebec is," he said. "Quebecers are not racists."There are also Canadians, including in the Muslim community, for whom religion is extremely important in both a public and a private way, he said."What we need now is people who can understand and bridge those two realities," said Trudeau.Elghawaby, he said, is the right person to try and bridge that divide."What started with a level of concern about some unfortunate statements is starting to look like a pile on, and we're very aware of where that's coming from," Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Marc Miller, who represents a Quebec riding, said Wednesday prior to Elghawaby's apology."We have to be careful as a nation, as people instrumentalize the fear of the other, particularly those who have not been represented in the public space, like Muslims."NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh said he wants the focus to turn towards combating Islamophobia and the violence that it leads to."Islamophobia is not a problem of any one place. It's a problem for the entire country," Singh said Wednesday. "We need to take this issue very seriously, and protect the members of our Muslim communities."On Sunday, Canada marked the sixth anniversary of the Quebec City mosque shooting, when six men were killed not long after their evening prayers. In 2021, a man drove his pickup truck into a Muslim family in London, Ont., killing a family of four and injuring one other."We have had other attacks in other parts of the country. We know Islamophobia kills. This is the issue," Elghawaby said. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Feb. 1, 2023.With files from Mia Rabson.

France seizes Iran assault rifles, missiles heading to Houthi rebels in Yemen-Iranians deny involvement in shipment intercepted last month in Gulf of Oman; US Central Command says vessel was on route historically used by Iranians to illegally traffic weapons-By Jon Gambrell-FEB 2,23-Today, 3:24 pm

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — French naval forces in January seized thousands of assault rifles, machine guns and anti-tank missiles in the Gulf of Oman coming from Iran and heading to Yemen’s Houthi rebels, officials said Thursday. While Iran denied being involved, images of the weapons released by the US military’s Central Command showed them to be similar to others captured by American forces in other shipments tied to Tehran. The announcement comes as Iran faces increasing Western pressure over its shipment of drones to arm Russia during its war on Ukraine, as well as for its violent monthslong crackdown targeting protesters.Regional tensions also have heightened after a suspected Israeli drone attack on a military workshop in the central Iranian city of Isfahan on Saturday. Previous cycles of violence since the collapse of Iran’s nuclear deal with world powers have seen the Islamic Republic launch retaliatory attacks at sea.The seizure occurred on January 15 in the Gulf of Oman, a body of water that stretches from the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf, through to the Arabian Sea and onto the Indian Ocean. CENTCOM described the interdiction as happening “along routes historically used to traffic weapons unlawfully from Iran to Yemen.”A United Nations resolution bans arms transfers to Yemen’s Iranian-backed Houthi rebels, who took the country’s capital in late 2014 and have been at war with a Saudi-led coalition backing the country’s internationally recognized government since March 2015.The Wall Street Journal first reported on the seizure, identifying the forces involved as elite French special forces. Two officials with knowledge of the interdiction, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they did not have permission to speak publicly on the operation’s details, similarly identified the French as carrying out the seizure. The French military did not respond to requests for comment about capturing the weapons. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani in an online message rejected the assessment Tehran supplied the weapons on the vessel and described the accusations as “politically motivated.”While France maintains a naval base in Abu Dhabi, it typically takes a quieter approach in the region while maintaining a diplomatic presence in Iran.Iran has long denied arming the Houthis, though Western nations, UN experts and others have traced weaponry ranging from night-vision scopes, rifles and missiles back to Tehran. In November, the US Navy said it found 70 tons of a missile fuel component hidden among bags of fertilizer aboard a ship bound to Yemen from Iran. Houthi ballistic missile fire has targeted Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates in the past.Images taken Wednesday by CENTCOM and analyzed by the AP, showed a variety of weapons on board an unidentified ship apparently docked at a port. The weapons appeared to include Chinese-made Type 56 rifles, Russian-made Molot AKS20Us and PKM-pattern machine guns. All have appeared in other seizures of weapons attributed to Iran.CENTCOM said the seizure included more than 3,000 rifles and 578,000 rounds of ammunition. The released images also showed 23 container-launched anti-tank missiles, which also have turned up in other shipments tied to Iran. The war in Yemen has deteriorated largely into a stalemate and spawned one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. However, Saudi-led airstrikes haven’t been recorded in Yemen since the kingdom began a cease-fire at the end of March 2022, according to the Yemen Data Project. That ceasefire expired in October despite diplomatic efforts to renew it. That has led to fears the war could again escalate. More than 150,000 people have been killed in Yemen during the fighting, including over 14,500 civilians.

Syria blasts chemical watchdog report on 2018 attack as pandering to Western nations-DAmascus regime’s representative in Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons says group’s findings based on ‘serious irregularities and defects’
By SAMAR KASSABALLI and Kareem Chehayeb    Today, 2:53 pm

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — Syria on Thursday dismissed the global chemical weapons watchdog’s statement that investigators found “reasonable grounds to believe” the air force dropped two cylinders of chlorine gas on the city of Douma in 2018.The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons produced a detailed report following a fact-finding mission that investigated the April 7, 2018, attack. Medical workers and activists said at the time more than 40 people were killed in the attack. OPCW inspectors headed to the site of the attack days later. The United States, Britain, and France blamed Syrian government forces and launched airstrikes. Syria and key ally Russia deny any chemical attack.Douma was the final target of the Syrian government’s sweeping campaign to reclaim control of the eastern Ghouta suburbs of Damascus from opposition forces, who gave up the town days after the alleged chemical attack.Syria’s permanent representative to OPCW, Ambassador Milad Atieh, told reporters that the OPCW has been biased towards “Western positions.”“The OPCW’s report relied mostly on information obtained from countries hostile to Syria and some other media and social networking sites run by terrorist organizations,” he said. “The report contained false accusations aimed at increasing pressure and escalating Western positions hostile to Syria.”Atieh claimed the report’s methodology had “serious irregularities and defects” and false accusations that impacted its credibility, though he did not give any examples. In an attempt to ensure accountability for crimes in Syria, the United Nations has established what it calls an “International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism.” It is mandated to preserve and analyze evidence of crimes and prepare files for trials in “national, regional or international courts or tribunals that have or may in the future have jurisdiction over these crimes, in accordance with international law.”Atieh, however, accused the United States and Western countries of political interference in the UN mechanism.US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken in a joint statement with his British, French, and German counterparts last week commended the OPCW report and called on key Syrian ally Russia to “stop shielding Syria from accountability for its use of chemical weapons.”“Syria must fully declare and destroy its chemical weapons program and allow the deployment of OPCW staff to its country to verify it has done so,” the statement read. The ongoing conflict that started in Syria more than a decade ago has killed hundreds of thousands and displaced half the country’s prewar population of 23 million.Syria joined the OPCW in 2013 under severe international pressure after a deadly chemical attack on a Damascus suburb.

Iran claims UN watchdog inspector made mistake in report on centrifuge change-Country’s atomic agency says it has provided ‘explanations’ about altered configuration of devices and the matter has been resolved-By AFP-FEB 2,23-Today, 1:51 pm

TEHRAN, Iran — Iran said a UN nuclear watchdog inspector was mistaken about covert changes to one of its uranium enrichment clusters and said the issue has now been resolved, state media reported Thursday. The International Atomic Energy Agency said Iran had substantially modified an interconnection between two centrifuge clusters enriching uranium to up to 60 percent at its Fordo Fuel Enrichment Plant (FFEP).In a confidential report seen by AFP on Wednesday, it said this had been done without declaring it to the IAEA.“An agency inspector inadvertently reported that Iran had made changes in the operating procedure at the enrichment site… that it had not announced before,” Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization spokesman Behrouz Kamalvandi was quoted as saying late Wednesday by IRNA news agency.Tehran provided “explanations” to the inspectors and “the inspector in question realized his mistake,” he said. “After coordination with the agency’s secretariat, the matter was resolved.”The IAEA said that during an unannounced Fordo inspection on January 21, it found that “two IR-6 centrifuge cascades… were interconnected in a way that was substantially different from the mode of operation declared by Iran to the agency.”Since late last year, the two cascades have been used to produce uranium enriched to up to 60%, the report to member states added. The IAEA did not specify the kind of changes made to the interconnection between the cascades.IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi expressed concern that Iran had “implemented a substantial change in the design information of FFEP in relation to the production of high enriched uranium without informing the Agency in advance.”However, IRNA quoted Kamalvandi as saying: “If Mr Grossi said this, I believe that his information has not been updated,” adding that Iran’s atomic agency has sent a letter in “response to the agency’s previous letter in this regard.”Last week, Grossi told European Parliament lawmakers Iran had “amassed enough nuclear material for several nuclear weapons — not one at this point.”Speaking about Iran’s recent atomic activities, including enriching uranium well beyond the limits of the landmark 2015 deal to curb its nuclear capabilities — Grossi said Tehran’s trajectory “is certainly not a good one.”The deal with world powers, known as the JCPOA, collapsed after the United States withdrew from it in 2018 under former president Donald Trump.Negotiations that started in April 2021 to revive the agreement have since stalled.Iran said in November it had begun producing uranium enriched to 60% at Fordo, an underground facility that reopened three years ago after the breakdown of the JCPOA.

With Europe seething at Iran, Netanyahu takes off for meeting with Macron-PM’s first announced trip abroad since returning to power comes amid rising tensions with Palestinians, but Israel’s focus will be on threat from Tehran-By Lazar Berman-FEB 2,23-Today, 1:47 pmUpdated at 3:20 pm

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu took off Thursday morning for Paris, where he will meet President Emmanuel Macron at  Élysée Palace in the evening. The two are expected to focus on Iran during their meeting, according to the Prime Minister’s Office, though Macron is also expected to talk about rising violence between Israel and Palestinians. Before boarding his flight to Paris, Netanyahu said that the focus of his conversations with Macron would be “our joint efforts to stop Iran’s aggression and its drive toward a nuclear weapon.”European powers’ talks with Iran over a return to the 2015 nuclear deal have been stalled for months, and a return to the negotiating table seems unlikely as Western anger at Tehran grows.Iran has been sending Shahed-136 loitering munitions to Russia, which have been used in deadly attacks against Ukrainian civilians. Military officials in Ukraine are also warning about the danger of Iranian ballistic missiles being used in the war, which has dominated the European agenda for the last 11 months.Western governments have also been blasting the Islamic Republic for its deadly crackdown on protesters since countrywide demonstrations erupted in September.Israel is pushing the powers known at the P5+1 to declare the Vienna nuclear talks dead and implement a “snapback,” reimposing UN Security Council sanctions and effectively moving on from the framework of the nuclear deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.France is relatively hawkish on Iran, and has at times taken positions toward Tehran’s nuclear program that are tougher than Washington’s. But Macron still supports a return to the JCPOA.Netanyahu is also slated to meet French finance leaders and members of the Paris Jewish community. His visit will keep him and his wife in Paris over Shabbat, and he is scheduled to return on Saturday night. Before flying out, Netanyahu opened the embassy of Chad alongside President Mahamat Deby earlier Thursday. It will be Netanyahu’s second official trip abroad as premier since returning to office, after recently meeting with Jordan’s King Abdullah II in Amman in an unannounced visit.Macron called Netanyahu on Monday to express condolences over the deadly terror attack that killed seven Israelis and injured three in Jerusalem on Friday. The two decided on the visit during the conversation. They last met in Jerusalem in January 2020.During the call, Macron urged Israelis and Palestinians not to “feed the spiral of violence” and “expressed his availability to contribute to the resumption of dialogue between the Palestinians and the Israelis,” the Elysée Palace said in a statement. The French president also “expressed France’s full and complete solidarity with Israel in its fight against terrorism” and repeated “France’s unwavering attachment to Israel’s security,” the palace said.According to a statement issued by Netanyahu’s office, the two also “sharply condemned Iran’s active participation in harming innocent civilians in Ukraine” and agreed to continue the dialogue between Israel and France on various regional issues.

Shin Bet: Lebanese man tried to recruit Palestinians for terror via TikTok-Agency says two East Jerusalem men with Israeli residency were in contact with former Hezbollah operative Abu Ghassan, who instructed them to conduct surveillance operations-By Emanuel Fabian    Today, 1:37 pm-FEB 2,23

The Shin Bet security agency on Thursday said it had recently uncovered attempts by a Lebanese man, a former Hezbollah operative, to recruit Palestinians for terror via the TikTok video-sharing mobile application. The agency said two East Jerusalem men, residents of Israel, were arrested over their alleged ties with the man, Salah Swouti, known as Abu Ghassan.According to the Shin Bet, Abu Ghassan instructed them to conduct surveillance operations in Israel, as the pair have Israeli ID cards. The agency said they “photographed places in Israel, with a focus on Jerusalem, in order to advance terror attacks.”The two men were not identified, and it was not clear when they were arrested. The Shin Bet said Abu Ghassan, a former operative in the Iran-backed Hezbollah terror group, would make contact with potential operatives in East Jerusalem and the West Bank via TikTok.“At the beginning of the exchange, ‘Abu Ghassan’ focuses on personal matters and general discourse, such as the situation in Jerusalem and conflicts between Jews and Arabs,” the agency said.“Later, as part of the recruitment process that is characteristic of Hezbollah, ‘Abu Ghassan’ moves the conversation to Telegram. There he forwards seemingly innocent requests to carry out tasks, such as taking photos and videos in Israel, as a possible target for an attack,” the Shin Bet said.“Over time and with the strengthening of the connection between the parties, ‘Abu Ghassan’ instructs his operatives to initiate terror attacks against Israeli citizens, ignoring the damage that will be caused to the operatives and their families,” the Shin Bet added.Last week, the Shin Bet revealed an attempt by the Gaza Strip-based Hamas terror group to recruit Palestinians to help commit attacks. The Shin Bet said it viewed the attempts to recruit Israeli residents for terror “gravely,” adding that it “calls for vigilance online in light of the threat posed by various terror elements on social networks.”In September, Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar said incitement on social media was a major challenge for the security agency, as it was difficult to prevent algorithms from echoing inciting content that reaches easily influenced youth.“It is a new battlefield for security agencies. It brings more people into terrorism and challenges the tools we have to combat terrorism. Terror groups have identified this, and they know how to cause copycat attacks, and influence others,” Bar said at a conference at Herzliya’s Reichman University.Bar said combating online incitement was especially difficult as the agency needs to safeguard democracy and protect freedom of speech.

Satellite photos show damage at Iran military workshop allegedly struck by Israel-Images reveal damaged roof at facility in Isfahan after it was attacked using bomb-carrying quadcopters on night of January 28-By AP and TOI staff    Today, 12:08 pm

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Satellite photos analyzed by The Associated Press on Friday showed damage done to what Iran describes as a military workshop attacked by Israeli drones, the latest such assault amid a shadow war between the two countries. While Iran has offered no explanation yet of what the workshop manufactured, the drone attack threatened to again raise tensions in the region. Already, worries have grown over Tehran enriching uranium closer than ever to weapons-grade levels, with a top United Nations nuclear official warning the Islamic Republic had enough fuel to build “several” atomic bombs if it chooses.Meanwhile, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose earlier tenure as premier saw escalating attacks targeting Iran, has returned to office and reiterated that he views Tehran as his country’s top security threat. With State Department spokesperson Ned Price now declaring Iran has “killed” the opportunity to return to its nuclear deal with world powers, it remains unclear what diplomacy immediately could ease tensions between Tehran and the West.Cloudy weather had prevented satellite pictures of the site of the workshop since it came under attack by what Iran described as bomb-carrying quadcopters on the night of January 28. Quadcopters, which get their name from having four rotors, typically operate from short ranges by remote control.Images taken Thursday by Planet Labs PBC showed the workshop in Isfahan, a central Iranian city some 350 kilometers (215 miles) south of Tehran. An AP analysis of the image, compared to earlier images of the workshop, showed damage to the structure’s roof. That damage corresponded to footage aired by Iranian state television immediately after the attack that showed at least two holes in the building’s roof. The Iranian state TV footage, as well as satellite photos, suggest the building’s roof also may have been built with so-called “slat armor.” The structure resembles a cage built around roofs or armored vehicles to stop direct detonation from rockets, missiles or bomb-carrying drones against a target.Installation of such protection at the workshop suggests Iran believed it could be a drone target.Iran’s Intelligence Ministry in July claimed to have broken up a plot to target sensitive sites around Isfahan. A segment aired on Iranian state TV in October included purported confessions by alleged members of Komala, a Kurdish opposition party that is exiled from Iran and now dwells in Iraq, that they planned to target a military aerospace facility in Isfahan after being trained by Israel’s Mossad intelligence service. It remains unclear whether the military workshop targeted in the drone attack was that aerospace facility. Iran’s mission to the United Nations did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding the satellite images and other questions about the workshop. The attack comes as Iran’s theocratic government faces challenges both at home and abroad. Nationwide protests have shaken the country since the September death of Mahsa Amini, a Kurdish-Iranian woman detained by the country’s morality police. Its rial currency has plummeted to new lows against the US dollar. Meanwhile, Iran continues to arm Russia with the bomb-carrying drone that Moscow uses in attacks in Ukraine on power plants and civilian targets.Israel is suspected of launching a series of attacks on Iran, including an April 2021 assault on its underground Natanz nuclear facility that damaged its centrifuges. In 2020, Iran blamed Israel for a sophisticated attack that killed its top military nuclear scientist.Israel has not commented on this drone attack. However, Israeli officials rarely acknowledge operations carried out by the country’s secret military units or the Mossad. On Monday, the Kan public broadcaster reported that the Israeli security establishment was bracing for a retaliatory strike by Iran. The report said that security officials have held discussions to try to predict when and how Iran will respond to several strikes on convoys that reportedly were ferrying weapons and ammunition for Tehran-backed militias in Syria over the past 48 hours. Those airstrikes followed the more significant drone strike on Isfahan.A letter published Thursday by Iran’s ambassador to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, said that “early investigations suggest that the Israeli regime was responsible for this attempted act of aggression.” The letter, which labeled Israel “Warmongering,” did not elaborate on what evidence supported Iran’s suspicion.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

In now annual tradition, US urges Israel to keep friction in check ahead of Ramadan-Biden officials once again fear holiday season will lead to uptick in tensions, particularly in Jerusalem, with Sullivan and Blinken raising concerns during Jerusalem visits-By Jacob Magid-FEB 3,23-Today, 6:49 am

For the second straight year, the Biden administration has circled the Muslim holy month of Ramadan as a potential accelerant for another eruption in violence between Israelis and Palestinians.Senior US officials used their visits to Jerusalem over the last two weeks to urge Israel to take preemptive steps in the coming weeks in order to ensure that the sensitive period does not feature more bloodshed, two US and Israeli officials told The Times of Israel on Thursday, speaking on condition of anonymity. The holy month is slated to begin around March 22.Talks on efforts to defuse tensions are still in their early stages and there were no specific requests made of Israel by White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, who visited last week, and Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who was in town this week, the Israeli official said. However, the top Biden aides made clear that the issue is a matter of concern for the US and they asked their Israeli counterparts how they plan to address the matter. The US official said that a particular emphasis was placed during Sullivan and Blinken’s meetings on them confirming that Israel will ensure adherence to the status quo at Jerusalem’s Temple Mount, which sees an uptick in Palestinian visitors during Ramadan.“There’s reason to assume that the violence this year will be worse, given that the new Israeli government is more emboldened to act punitively, but Prime Minister Netanyahu is also keen on keeping things calm so that he can focus on Iran and Saudi normalization and that will impact his calculus,” said a former US official familiar with the matter. The Israeli official said that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in both meetings assured the Biden administration that he would not allow violations of the unwritten policy, under which Muslims are permitted to pray at the Temple Mount while non-Muslims can only visit during limited windows. But according to the Israeli official, the US did not ask Netanyahu to block National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir from paying a repeat visit to the flashpoint compound. His tour of the site last month sparked a whirlwind of condemnations from across the globe.US Special Representative for Palestinian Affairs Hady Amr and US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Barbara Leaf stayed behind after Blinken left on Tuesday for talks with Israeli and Palestinian officials in an effort to come away with a series of steps that can be implemented in the coming weeks to deescalate tensions, the US official said. The former official, who previously served in a Democratic administration, said that the US “will have to aim low in terms of what it can accomplish.”The source explained that the Palestinian Authority has “a list of ten unilateral steps” it opposes in East Jerusalem and the West Bank. The list includes settlement construction, outpost legalization, Israel Defense Forces raids into PA-controlled Area A of the West Bank and violations to the status quo at the Temple Mount. While the PA urged the US to coax a commitment from Israel to cease such actions, the former US official said such “public guarantees” from Netanyahu’s new hardline government would be “highly unlikely.Biden officials held similar conversations with their Israeli and Palestinian counterparts in the months leading up to Ramadan last year. At the time, officials were worried that the confluence of Ramadan, Passover and Easter over the same period could ratchet up religious friction. Then too, the US urged Israel to take preemptive steps to maintain calm before and during Ramadan, such as freezing evictions and home demolitions along with easing police presence in and around the Old City.At the time, Israel was led by former prime ministers Naftali Bennett and Yair Lapid, whose moderate unity government took pains to align with Washington.A year earlier, tensions loosely linked to Ramadan snowballed until the outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza and rampant street violence in mixed Jewish-Arab cities. The lead-up to Ramadan 2022 still saw significant bloodshed, including March terror attacks in Beersheba, Hadera and Bnei Brak in which 11 Israelis and foreign nationals were killed. Four more civilians were killed in shooting attacks in Tel Aviv and the Ariel settlement toward the beginning and end of the holy month.Four more people were killed in a stabbing attack in Elad days after Ramadan, including one person who succumbed to wounds on Wednesday. That attack had coincided with Israel’s Independence Day.During roughly that same period — from late February through late May of 2022 — 57 Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces, according to the UN. Most, but not all, of those deaths took place during clashes with troops or IDF raids of Palestinian towns.

US tracking suspected Chinese spy balloon spotted high over Montana-Pentagon declines to shoot down craft thought to be snooping on missile silo, due to fears of falling debris; claims balloon won’t find anything satellites can’t already see-By TARA COPP and Lolita C. Baldor-FEB 3,23-Today, 5:08 am

WASHINGTON (AP) — The US is tracking a suspected Chinese surveillance balloon that has been spotted over US airspace for a couple days, but the Pentagon decided not to shoot it down due to risks of harm for people on the ground, officials said Thursday. The discovery of the balloon puts a further strain on US-China relations at a time of heightened tensions.A senior defense official told Pentagon reporters that the US has “very high confidence” it is a Chinese high-altitude balloon and it was flying over sensitive sites to collect information. One of the places the balloon was spotted was Montana, which is home to one of the nation’s three nuclear missile silo fields at Malmstrom Air Force Base. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive information.Brig. Gen. Patrick Ryder, Pentagon press secretary, provided a brief statement on the issue, saying the government continues to track the balloon. He said it is “currently traveling at an altitude well above commercial air traffic and does not present a military or physical threat to people on the ground.”He said similar balloon activity has been seen in the past several years. He added that the US took steps to ensure it did not collect sensitive information. The defense official said the US has “engaged” Chinese officials through multiple channels and communicated the seriousness of the matter. The incident comes as Secretary of State Antony Blinken was supposed to make his first trip to Beijing, expected this weekend, to try to find some common ground. Although the trip has not been formally announced, both Beijing and Washington have been talking about his imminent arrival. It was not immediately clear if the discovery of the balloon would impact Blinken’s travel plans. The senior defense official said the US did get fighter jets, including F-22s, ready to shoot down the balloon if ordered to by the White House. The Pentagon ultimately recommended against it, noting that even as the balloon was over a sparsely populated area of Montana, its size would create a debris field large enough that it could have put people at risk.It was not clear what the military was doing to prevent it from collecting sensitive information or what will happen with the balloon if it isn’t shot down.In a letter sent Thursday to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, Sen. Steve Daines, R-Mont., wrote: “The fact that this balloon was occupying Montana airspace creates significant concern that Malmstrom Air Force Base and the United States’ intercontinental ballistic missile fields are the target of this intelligence gathering mission… It is vital to establish the flight path of this balloon, any compromised US national security assets, and all telecom or IT infrastructure on the ground within the US that this spy balloon was utilizing.”In this image provided by the US Air Force, Airman 1st Class Jackson Ligon, left, and Senior Airman Jonathan Marinaccio, 341st Missile Maintenance Squadron technicians, connect a re-entry system to a spacer on an intercontinental ballistic missile during a Simulated Electronic Launch-Minuteman test September 22, 2020, at a launch facility near Malmstrom Air Force Base in Great Falls, Mont. (Senior Airman Daniel Brosam/US Air Force via AP)-The defense official said the spy balloon was trying to fly over the Montana missile fields, but the US has assessed that it has “limited” value in terms of providing China intelligence it couldn’t already collect by other means, such through spy satellites. The official would not specify the size of the balloon, but said it was large enough that despite its high altitude, commercial pilots could see it. All air traffic was halted at Montana’s Billings Logan International Airport from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, as the military provided options to the White House.A photograph of a large white balloon lingering over the area was captured by The Billings Gazette, but the Pentagon would not confirm if that was the surveillance balloon. The balloon could be seen drifting in and out of clouds and had what appeared to be a solar array hanging from the bottom, said Gazette photographer Larry Mayer. The defense official said what concerned them about this launch was the altitude the balloon was flying at and the length of time it lingered over a location, without providing specifics.Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte said he was briefed Wednesday about the situation after the Montana National Guard was notified of an ongoing military operation taking place in Montana airspace, according to a statement from the Republican governor and spokesperson Brooke Stroyke.“From the spy balloon to the Chinese Communist Party spying on Americans through TikTok to CCP-linked companies buying American farmland, I’m deeply troubled by the constant stream of alarming developments for our national security,” Gianforte said in a statement.Tensions with China are particularly high on numerous issues, ranging from Taiwan and the South China Sea to human rights in China’s western Xinjiang region and the clampdown on democracy activists in Hong Kong. Not least on that list of irritants are China’s tacit support for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, its refusal to rein in North Korea’s expanding ballistic missile program and ongoing disputes over trade and technology. On Tuesday, Taiwan scrambled fighter jets, put its navy on alert and activated missile systems in response to nearby operations by 34 Chinese military aircraft and nine warships that are part Beijing’s strategy to unsettle and intimidate the self-governing island democracy.Twenty of those aircraft crossed the central line in the Taiwan Strait that has long been an unofficial buffer zone between the two sides, which separated during a civil war in 1949.Beijing has also increased preparations for a potential blockade or military action against Taiwan, which has stirred increasing concern among military leaders, diplomats and elected officials in the US, Taiwan’s key ally. The surveillance balloon was first reported by NBC News. Some Montana residents reported seeing an unusual object in the sky around the time of the airport shutdown Wednesday, but it’s not clear that what they were seeing was the balloon. From an office window in Billings, Chase Doak said he saw a “big white circle in the sky” that he said was too small to be the moon.He took some photos, then ran home to get a camera with a stronger lens and took more photos and video. He could see it for about 45 minutes and it appeared stationary, but Doak said the video suggested it was slowly moving.“I thought maybe it was a legitimate UFO,” he said. “So I wanted to make sure I documented it and took as many photos as I could.”

GOP-led House boots Ilhan Omar from Foreign Affairs panel over past Israel comments-Progressive lawmaker co-sponsors pro-Israel resolution hours before vote, whose results still fall along party lines; Democrats accuse Republicans of targeting women of color-By Jacob Magid-2 February 2023, 10:43 pm

The Republican-led US House of Representatives voted after raucous debate Thursday to oust Democrat Ilhan Omar from the chamber’s Foreign Affairs Committee, citing her past anti-Israel comments, in a dramatic escalation after Democrats in the last session booted a pair of far-right GOP lawmakers over their own incendiary remarks.House Speaker Kevin McCarthy was able to solidify Republican support against the Somali-born Muslim woman in the new Congress, although some GOP lawmakers had expressed reservations. Removal of lawmakers from House committees was essentially unprecedented until the Democratic ousters two years ago of hard-right Republican Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia and Paul Gosar of Arizona. The 218-211 vote, along party lines, came after a heated debate with voices raised in which Democrats accused the GOP of targeting Omar based on her race. Omar defended herself on the House floor, asking if anyone was surprised she was being targeted, “because when you push power, power pushes back.”“My voice will get louder and stronger, and my leadership will be celebrated around the world,” Omar said in a closing speech.Republicans focused on six statements Omar has made that “under the totality of the circumstances, disqualify her from serving on the Committee of Foreign Affairs,” said Rep. Michael Guest, R-Miss.The most well-known of the remarks was a tweet she posed in 2019 in which she claimed that US lawmakers’ support for Israel was “all about the Benjamins.” She subsequently apologized, saying she was learning “the painful history of antisemitic tropes.”House kicks off hour debate on @RepMaxMiller's resolution to remove Rep. Omar from the House Foreign Affairs Committee. pic.twitter.com/VhtoQ0FFYm— Jacob Kornbluh (@jacobkornbluh) February 2, 2023-Hours before Thursday’s vote, Omar even co-sponsored a resolution titled, “recognizing Israel as America’s legitimate and democratic ally and condemning antisemitism.”The measure resolves that the House “rejects hate, discrimination, and antisemitism in all forms, including antisemitism masquerading as anti-Israel sentiment… [and] explicitly condemns perpetuation of antisemitic tropes, including claims of dual loyalty, control, and other conspiracy theories antithetical to American values.”Hours after the vote, Omar tweeted, “my critique of our foreign policy, Israel’s policy towards Palestinians or that of any foreign nation will not change. As a person who suffered the horrors of war and persecution, my advocacy will always be for those that suffer because of the actions of governments.”Omar’s removal was condemned by the Jewish Democratic Council of America, which said there was no equivalence between the two parties on the issue of antisemitism.Ilhan Omar's past statements make it clear she is unfit to represent the U.S. on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.– She repeatedly used anti-semitic tropes– She described 9/11 by saying "some people did something"– She compared America and Israel to Hamas and the Taliban pic.twitter.com/VnDIVtw5oV— Kevin McCarthy (@SpeakerMcCarthy) February 2, 2023-“Democrats have sought to combat extremism, while the GOP has normalized bigotry and provided a political home for extremists,” JDCA said in a statement.“We’ve disagreed with Rep. Omar on Israel, condemned her use of antisemitic tropes, and welcomed her apology. Today, we stand with House Democrats in strongly opposing this unjust act of political retribution. We also stand with Muslim Americans calling out this Republican attack for being rooted in bigotry and Islamophobia,” the group added.JDCA’s GOP foil, the Republican Jewish Coalition, hailed the Thursday vote, saying that “for years, Democratic leadership has failed to hold Rep. Ilhan Omar accountable for her vile, hateful, and dangerous anti-Israel and antisemitic rhetoric.”"This about targeting women of color!" — AOC's impassioned defense of Ilhan Omar pic.twitter.com/8vqr5tNy6z — Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) February 2, 2023-In the debate ahead of the vote on Omar, Democrats lined up to express support for their progressive colleague. Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York said she had at times “made mistakes” and used antisemitic tropes that were condemned by House Democrats four years ago. But that’s not what Thursday’s vote was about, he said.“[But this] is not about accountability, it’s about political revenge,” Jeffries said.Rep. Jan Schakowsky furiously defended Omar, declaring, “I stand before you as a proud Jew and a proud friend and colleague of Ilhan Omar. I don’t need any of you to defend me against antisemitism.” "I will continue to speak up, because representation matters" — Ilhan Omar pic.twitter.com/9d14NBSvYK— Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) February 2, 2023-Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, took it one step further, saying that the GOP’s action was one of the “disgusting legacies after 9/11… the targeting and racism against Muslim-Americans throughout the United States of America. And this is an extension of that legacy.”She added, “This is about targeting women of color.”Omar is one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress. She is also the first to wear a hijab in the House chamber after floor rules were changed to allow members to wear head coverings for religious reasons.Rep. Dean Phillips on Ilhan Omar: "She has never posted a video depicting herself decapitating and killing fellow members of Congress. She doesn't question whether a plane really crashed into the Pentagon on 9/11. She does not wonder if school shootings are staged." pic.twitter.com/8pd3b1tEvV — Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) February 2, 2023-It’s so painful to watch,” said Rep. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, who joined Congress with Omar in 2019 the first two female Muslims elected to the House.“To Congresswoman Omar, I am so sorry that our country is failing you today through this chamber,” Tlaib, who is of Palestinian descent, said through tears. “You belong on that committee.”The chairman of the committee, Rep. Michael McCaul of Texas, argued for excluding Omar from the panel during a recent closed-door meeting with fellow Republicans.“It’s just that her worldview of Israel is so diametrically opposed to the committee’s,” McCaul told reporters in describing his stance. “I don’t mind having differences of opinion, but this goes beyond that.”McCarthy already blocked Reps. Adam Schiff and Eric Swalwell, both California Democrats, from rejoining the House Intelligence Committee once the GOP took control of the chamber in January. While appointments to the intelligence panel are the prerogative of the speaker, the action on Omar required a House vote.Several Republicans skeptical of removing Omar wanted “due process” for lawmakers who face removal. McCarthy said he told them he would work with Democrats on creating a due process system, but acknowledged it’s still a work in progress.

CBC-Northern Labrador warned to prepare for 'powerful and dangerous blizzard'Fri, February 3, 2023 at 1:39 p.m. EST·2 min read

A major winter storm is barrelling toward Northern Labrador, and the provincial government is warning people there to be prepared.CBC meteorologist Ashley Brauweiler describes it as "a powerful and dangerous blizzard.""This is not a storm to take lightly," she said Friday afternoon. "It's a good idea to be prepared for extended power outages and get an emergency kit ready."Environment Canada has put a large part of Labrador's north coast under a blizzard warning for Friday evening through Saturday night. The storm is expected to drop between 60 and 80 centimetres of snow on the area, with higher amounts possible in Postville, Makkovik and Hopedale."Blizzard conditions will develop overnight and will persist through Saturday leading to whiteouts and zero visibility. Winds will be gusting over 100 km/h for 18-plus hours," Brauweiler said.Northwesterly winds could reach more than 130 km/h at times on Saturday. There will be less snow, 20 to 30 centimetres, toward Natuashish, while Nain could see between five and 10 centimetres.Environment Canada said it's not recommending travel during the storm. In a press release Friday afternoon, the province's Public Safety Department asked residents to monitor forecasts."Residents and communities are asked to use caution and to take measures to ensure personal safety, and if possible, to clear fire hydrants of snow in case of emergency," reads the release. "It is important that residents have the supplies they need, including food, water and medications for at least 72 hours in the event of adverse weather conditions affecting travel."Farther south, the Red Bay to L'Anse-au-Clair area can expect between 15 and 25 centimetres through Friday night.Much of the rest of the province is under extreme cold and warnings for the weekend, with some areas under a snow squall watch."Saturday will be frigid and windy across the island. West or southwesterly winds gusting between 80-110 km/h means wind chills between –25 and –30 through the day," said Brauweiler."This cold weather and the open ocean are a perfect recipe for intense snow squalls as well, which may produce blizzard conditions at times. In snow squalls the weather conditions can vary considerably in just a couple of kilometres, meaning you can be in a snow squall with zero visibility in one minute and then blue sky a few minutes later."rauweiler said the weather will improve overnight Saturday.

ROMANS 1:18-32
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;
19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.
20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.
24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:(HOMOSEXUALITY,AND ALL SEX SINS)
25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:(LESBIENS)
27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly,(SODOMITES) and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.(AIDS ETC)
28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;
29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,
31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:
32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

GOD CREATED THEM MALE AND FEMALE IN MARRIAGE

GENESIS 1:27-28
27  So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
28  And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply,(HAVE LOTS OF CHILDREN) and replenish the earth,(HOMOSEXUALS CAN NOT REPLENISH THE EARTH WITH CHILDREN)(BY HAVING SEX WITH EACH OTHER) and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

GENESIS 2:21-24
21  And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;
22  And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.
23  And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.
24  Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

MATTHEW 19:4-6
4  And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,
5  And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?
6  Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

Old clips of Mister Rogers, a children’s TV show from the 1980s, have gone viral on social media after leftists were triggered by the character in the show singing a song about ‘boys being boys and girls being girls’.

Fred Rogers, who hosted Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood for decades, is seen in the footage singing a song explaining to children that there are two genders, that boys and girls are different, but that everyone is equal.“Boys are boys from the beginning, girls are girls right from the start. Everybody’s fancy, Everybody’s fine. Your body’s fancy and so is mine,” Rogers sings.Further stanzas of the song include the assertions “If you were born a boy, you stay a boy,” and “Only girls grow up to be the mommies, only boys can be the daddies.”The message was considered entirely wholesome, even up until the show aired its last episode in 2001, yet now in our 2023 reality the message is being labelled triggering and upsetting. Christian Mother is Suing School For Forcing Her 4-Year-Old Son to Take Part in Gay Pride Parade-by Paul Joseph Watson-February 2nd 2023, 6:30 am-Landmark case is first of its kind.

A born-again Christian mother is suing a primary school in the UK after her 4-year-old son was forced to take part in a gay pride parade. The lawsuit, brought by 38-year-old Izzy Montague, is the first of its kind in the country and underscores how deep LGBT indoctrination has penetrated the educational system.Heavers Farm Primary School in South Norwood, southeast London, sent a letter to parents back in June 2018 inviting them to take part in the pride march and “celebrate the differences that make them and their family special.”Montague subsequently contacted the school and told them she didn’t want her child ‘being involved of a public display of adherence to views which she did not accept.’Headteacher Susan Papas responded by refusing the request, telling Montague her son would be mandated to take part in the event.Mrs Montague later attended a meeting with Papas during which her daughter wore a t-shirt with the slogan, “Why be racist, sexist, homophobic, or transphobic when you could just be quiet?”Judge Christopher Lethem described Mrs Montague and her husband as”devout born-again Christians,” noting that, ‘They bear a belief that sexual relations should be abstained from or take place within a life-long marriage between a man and a woman and any activity outside those confines is sinful.”Montague told the court how she had discovered children in class were told to read from a “a same-sex-family book” as well as other LGBT-themed material. The mother also explained how she thought the school was trying to “indoctrinate it on to us by passing it off that it was part of law or part of British values or it was part of the national curriculum.”Montague is being supported by the Christian Legal Centre and is suing the school on the grounds of “direct and indirect discrimination, victimisation and breach of statutory duty under the Education Act 1996 and the Human Rights Act 1998,” the Daily Mail reports. The lawsuit could turn out to be a landmark case because it represents the first time that the legality of imposing LGBT ideology on children in schools will be scrutinized.

Israel says peace deal with Sudan to be signed by year’s end-Returning from Khartoum, Foreign Minister Eli Cohen says his visit laid ‘the foundations for a historic peace agreement with a strategic Arab and Muslim country’By Jeremy Sharon and AFP-2 February 2023, 10:59 pm

Israel and Sudan committed on Thursday to completing a normalization agreement in the near future following what Foreign Minister Eli Cohen described as his “historic diplomatic visit” to the Sudanese capital Khartoum.Cohen said upon landing back in Israel that the plan was for a full agreement to be signed by the end of the year — though only once Sudan’s current military leadership has transferred power to a civilian government, a process that is still unfolding.“Today’s visit to Sudan lays the foundations for a historic peace agreement with a strategic Arab and Muslim country,” Cohen said after he landed at Ben Gurion Airport.“The peace agreement between Israel and Sudan will promote regional stability and contribute to the national security of the State of Israel,” he continued.A statement released by the Sudanese Foreign Ministry after a meeting between Cohen and his Sudanese counterpart Ali al-Sadiq said that “It has been agreed to move forward towards the normalization of relations between the two countries.”Israel was once in a state of war with Sudan, after the African nation sent troops to fight against the nascent Jewish state in the War of Independence in 1948, but in January 2021, the two countries agreed to normalize relations as part of an agreement with the US that removed Sudan from its list of “state sponsors of terrorism.”Cohen, then the intelligence minister, led the first official Israeli delegation to Sudan that month but ties were never formalized despite that agreement due to internal political instability in Sudan.“Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, is remembered in Israel as the city where the Arab countries decided on the historic ‘Three Nos’: No peace with Israel, no negotiations with Israel, and no recognition of Israel,” recalled Cohen.“We are building a new reality with the Sudanese, in which the ‘Three Nos’ will become the ‘Three Yeses’: Yes to negotiations between Israel and Sudan, yes to recognition of Israel and yes to peace between the states and between the peoples.”Thursday’s talks touched briefly on “achieving stability and peace between Israel and the Palestinians,” the Sudanese statement said, but did not elaborate further.During the visit, Cohen met with Sudan’s President of the Transitional Sovereign Council, General Abdel Fatah Al Burhan and other senior officials, and discussed the necessary steps required to sign a final agreement between Israel and Sudan in the near future. In accordance with the plan, the signing ceremony of the peace agreement “will take place in a few months’ time in Washington after the establishment of a civilian government… as part of the ongoing transition process in the country,” Israel’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement to the press following Cohen’s visit. In his remarks to the press, Cohen said the agreement would also help Israel establish diplomatic relations with other African nations, and bolster the Jewish state’s existing ties with other countries on the continent.During discussions between the two delegations, Cohen said Israel wished to assist Sudan’s development “for the benefit of the Sudanese people” in a variety of fields including food security, water resources management, and agriculture. And Cohen also presented an aid program for Sudan to Sudanese military leaders that will “focus on projects and capacity building in the fields of humanitarian aid, water purification and public medicine.”Sudan, an Arab League member, had for decades maintained a rigid anti-Israel stance under longtime autocratic president Omar al-Bashir, who was ousted in April 2019 following mass protests against his rule.Khartoum was removed from the US blacklist in December 2020 after 27 years of crippling sanctions which strangled Sudan’s economy under Bashir. In January 2021, Sudan signed a declaration paving the way to normalizing ties with Israel, and in April that year, it approved a bill abolishing a 1958 boycott of the country.Relations were stymied, however, as political turmoil in Sudan deepened following an October 2021 military coup led by Burhan, derailing the post-Bashir transition to civilian rule.Sudan’s agreement to normalize relations with Israel upended a longstanding policy after the 1967 Six Day War that saw Israel conquer swathes of territory, including the West Bank from Jordan, the Sinai Peninsula from Egypt, and the Golan Heights from Syria.Arab leaders gathered in Khartoum after the defeat, and signed a resolution that became known as the “three nos.”Egypt and Jordan would later recognize Israel through peace treaties signed in 1979 and 1994 respectively, followed decades later by the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Morocco as part of the Abraham Accords.Burhan has defended the normalization with Israel, saying in a December 2021 interview that it was “essential for Sudan to return to the international community.”

Israel’s foreign minister in Sudan for normalization talks-Khartoum says military leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Eli Cohen discussed ‘ways to establish fruitful relations’-By TOI staff and Agencies    Today,-FEB 2,23-7:44 pm

An Israeli delegation headed by Foreign Minister Eli Cohen visited Khartoum on Thursday and met with Sudan’s military leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan in Khartoum, Sudanese authorities confirmed. The pair discussed “ways to establish fruitful relations” between the two countries and “prospects of cooperation” in security, agriculture, energy, health, water and education, according to a statement by Sudan’s sovereign council.Cohen was slated to land back in Israel later in the evening and hold a press conference about the trip, which his office called a “historic diplomatic visit.”Israel and Sudan agreed in 2020 to take steps to normalize ties following such agreements with the UAE, Bahrain and Morocco under the Abraham Accords, but Jerusalem and Khartoum have since struggled to finalize any deal.Cohen’s trip to Sudan came a day after an Israeli official told Hebrew media outlets that US diplomats in the region with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken informed Israeli counterparts that Sudan was readying to finalize an agreement to join the Abraham Accords, the framework agreement under which the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Morocco also normalized ties with Israel. The official said meetings had been held in recent weeks between Sudanese and Israeli officials, at the urging of the US, paving the way for the deal to be revived.Sudan initially announced it was ready to join the Abraham Accords as part of a deal that was also meant to net the financially struggling country with US aid and removal from Washington’s state-sponsored terror blacklist. However, Khartoum never signed the full accords, amid a disagreement between the country’s military and civilian leadership over whether to normalize with Israel. Doing so would end decades of enmity from one of Israel’s bitterest enemies, which famously hosted a 1967 summit at which the Arab League adopted its policy of refusal to engage with Jerusalem. While the military junta now running the country had backed normalization, the effort was put on the back burner and in May last year, the US cut aid to Sudan in response to the coup, further setting back the initiative.

Biden hosts Jordan’s Abdullah for third time, in nod to king’s role in region-US president reaffirms backing for Amman’s custodianship of Jerusalem holy places and importance of preserving Temple Mount status quo; monarch also meets with Jewish leaders-By Jacob Magid-FEB 3,23-Today, 2:05 am

US President Joe Biden hosted Jordan’s King Abdullah at the Oval Office Thursday, underlining Washington’s view of Amman as playing a critical role in maintaining regional stability, particularly regarding Israeli-Palestinian ties. The visit was Abdullah’s third to the White House since Biden took office, making him Biden’s most frequent foreign guest. The king previously visited in July 2021 and May 2022.During a private lunch, Biden thanked Abdullah for the role Jordan plays “as a force for stability in the Middle East,” according to a US readout on the talks.“The leaders discussed opportunities and mechanisms to reduce tensions, particularly in the West Bank,” the White House said.Biden “reaffirmed his strong support for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and recognized the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan’s crucial role as the custodian of Muslim holy places in Jerusalem, citing the critical need to preserve the historic status quo at the Haram al-Sharif/Temple Mount,” the White House said.Jordan’s Royal Court said in a statement that “Abdullah commended the United States’ crucial efforts in restoring calm and creating a political horizon that maintains prospects for just and comprehensive peace, based on the two-state solution.”The Temple Mount is the holiest place in Judaism, as the site of the two biblical temples. It is also the site of the third-holiest shrine in Islam, the Al-Aqsa Mosque. It has been a source of renewed tension between Israel, Jordan and the broader Muslim world since Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s return to the premiership in late December.Days after the new Israeli government was sworn in, far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir toured the Temple Mount, defying warnings from Jordan of diplomatic consequences. The visit sparked widespread international condemnation and Amman summoned Israel’s ambassador for rebuke.National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir visits the Temple Mount, January 3, 2023 (Courtesy Minhelet Har Habayit)-Jordan stridently opposes any changes to the status quo that governs the holy site, under which non-Muslims may visit the compound but not pray there. Ben Gvir has long campaigned for altering the regulations to allow Jewish prayer. Since entering government, he has ceased such calls while still criticizing the policy as “racist.”Netanyahu insists that Israel remains committed to upholding the status quo at the Temple Mount.Tensions ratcheted up again weeks later when Israeli police temporarily blocked Jordan’s ambassador Ghassan Majali from visiting the site, sparking a short-lived diplomatic tussle.Jordan saw its ties with Israel improve under the previous government after a rocky period over the previous decade with Netanyahu at the helm. In a likely sign of the sides seeking to patch things up, Abdullah hosted Netanyahu in Amman last week. The visit came amid heightened Israeli-Palestinian tensions following an IDF raid in Jenin in which nine Palestinian gunmen were killed along with one civilian, followed by a terror attack in East Jerusalem that took the lives of seven Israeli civilians.During the meeting, Jordan’s king “stressed the need to cease Israeli measures that undermine the two-state solution and push towards escalation,” the Royal Court said.Aside from Biden, Abdullah held meetings with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, new Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and other Congressional leaders. The king also met with a group of executives from prominent Jewish organizations while in Washington. According to the Royal Court, the king used the opportunity to reiterate many of the same messages he shared with Biden about the importance of both sides ceasing “unilateral measures” that fan the flames of violence.Jordan’s 1994 peace treaty with Israel has helped boost Amman’s support in Washington over the past several decades. It is the largest recipient of US bilateral assistance, receiving nearly $1.5 billion per year. (Israel receives the largest amount of defense aid at $3.8 billion per year). The Hashemite kingdom has struggled to pull itself from an ongoing economic crisis, which has been exacerbated by the war in Ukraine. The country recently saw a wave of protests over a rise in gas prices. The US has sought to convince Jordan to join the Negev Forum initiative, which seeks to boost cooperation between the US, Israel and several Arab countries with ties to the Jewish state. Amman has thus far held off from doing so, saying it will only join if the Palestinian Authority does, which has been a non-starter for Ramallah.Blinken raised the issue during his meeting with PA President Mahmoud Abbas earlier this week, according to a US official, who said that Ramallah has yet to provide a response.

Blinken’s focus on democracy could also be sign of US desire to cooperate on Iran-Secretary’s insistence on consensus, implied criticism of Netanyahu’s judicial overhaul reflect US concerns, but ex-envoy says Biden needs quiet to enable joint effort on Tehran-Lazar Berman-By Lazar Berman-FEB 3,23-Today, 7:19 pm

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken isn’t the first senior US official to take shots at Israeli democracy.Referencing gender segregation on Haredi buses and religious IDF soldiers walking out of a concert by a female singer, former US secretary of state Hillary Clinton in 2011 compared parts of Israel to Iran and the US south under Jim Crow laws. But it is hard to remember a visiting US secretary of state lecturing Israel’s democratically elected leaders so pointedly on what democratic values are, and why they must be protected, almost every time he was in front of a microphone and the press.Standing alongside Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday, Blinken treated the premier to his list of core democratic principles: “respect for human rights, the equal administration of justice for all, the equal rights of minority groups, the rule of law, free press, a robust civil society.”He also gave Israel’s longest-serving leader a lesson in governance, informing Netanyahu that “building consensus for new proposals is the most effective way to ensure they’re embraced and that they endure.”Blinken continued broadcasting his message to Israel’s ruling coalition even when he wasn’t with its members. During a meeting the next day with young civil society leaders, Blinken told them that their work can keep governments “focused and honest when it comes to making sure that we’re adhering to the principles that we all espouse.”He was expressing his concerns as the Netanyahu coalition is pushing a series of sweeping reforms that would dramatically government control over the judiciary. The plan has drawn intense criticism and warnings from leading financial and legal experts, weekly mass protests and public petitions by various officials, professionals and private companies, and direct opposition from the president of the Supreme Court, Esther Hayut, and the government’s senior legal adviser, Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara.Netanyahu’s government also includes right-wing politicians like Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben Gvir, whose past statements about West Bank annexation, Arabs, and LGBTQ Israelis unnerve the White House about where this government is headed.Indeed, it wasn’t only on judicial reforms that Blinken indicated patience with Israel was wearing thin. On Israeli-Palestinian tensions, he seemed to place much of the blame at Israel’s door after the recent spike in violence.Meeting Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas — who still has not condemned the murder of seven Israeli civilians outside a synagogue on Friday night — Blinken expressed his sorrow for the “innocent Palestinian civilians” killed over the past year in the West Bank.”Hours later in Jerusalem, Blinken pledged that “the United States will continue to oppose anything that puts that goal [of a two-state solution] further from reach.” He then set out five moves that threaten such a vision, the first four of which are declared aims of the new coalition or its component parties — “settlement expansion, legalization of illegal outposts, moves toward annexation of the West Bank, disruptions to the historic status quo at Jerusalem’s holy sites, demolitions and evictions.”The only blame he seemingly placed on the Palestinians was for “incitement and acquiescence to violence.”Anxiety in Washington-Were Secretary Blinken’s repeated warnings an indication that the White House is truly spooked by what it sees unfolding in Israel? Absolutely, say some experts. But not all.“I  wasn’t surprised,” said Eldad Shavit, senior researcher at the Institute for National Security Studies in Tel Aviv. “Jake Sullivan also spoke about this two weeks ago when he was here.”Shavit pointed at three priorities the Biden administration emphasizes in its conversations with Israel — avoiding provocative actions, unilateral measures that damage the chances for a two-state solution, and the importance of protecting democratic values.“These three issues worry the Americans deeply,” he said. “They have plenty of problems; they don’t want to be facing an escalation in the Middle East.”In stark contrast, Efraim Inbar, president of the Jerusalem Institute for Strategic Studies, saw Blinken’s focus on an ostensible threat to democracy as a pretext to make life uncomfortable for a leader Democratic party officials don’t care for.“You really think they’re worried about our democracy?” he asked. “It’s total nonsense.”“It’s a tool to bash Bibi,” he said, referring to Netanyahu by his nickname.Eyes on Iran-Ultimately, however, Blinken’s message might indicate that at least some priorities in Washington and in Jerusalem are more closely aligned than they seem on the surface.“The Blinken visit has been decontextualized,” said former Israeli ambassador to the US Michael Oren. “It’s part of a procession of high-level American officials that have come here in the last week and a half,” he continued. And the issue at the heart of that procession of visits, he said, is not the judicial overhaul or the Palestinians. “It’s about Iran.”In this framing, the White House, fed up with Iran’s protest crackdown and growing material support for Russia’s attacks on Ukrainian civilians, is increasingly open to cooperating with Israel in attacks on Iran’s drone production and nuclear program. At the same time, to enable smooth cooperation in this regard, the US Administration is indeed asking Netanyahu to rein in elements of his government that will cause headaches for President Joe Biden. The progressive wing of the Democratic party is already frustrated with Biden over the Palestinians. The president has not applied meaningful pressure on Israel over settlements, is not pushing any peace plan, and can’t even get its consulate to the Palestinians open. The last thing Biden needs, in this telling, is Israel giving more excuses for members of his party that don’t like Israel in the first place to push him to reduce military and intelligence cooperation.“We’re literally not seeing the forest for the trees,” said Oren. “We’re focusing on the Palestinians and we’re focusing on [judicial] reform. The big issue is Iran.”

BBC-Pope and archbishop on historic peace mission to South Sudan-religion editor Aleem Maqbool & Nichola Mandil in Juba - BBC News-Fri, February 3, 2023 at 12:35 PM EST

There has never been a visit like it and it has been years in the planning. The first people to greet Pope Francis when he arrived in the South Sudanese capital were Archbishop Justin Welby and Moderator Rev Iain Greenshields, who both boarded the papal plane moments after it landed. All three religious leaders were greeted with fanfare at Juba's airport before travelling through singing, cheering and ululating crowds to the Presidential Palace."It is a circuitous journey, yet one that can no longer be postponed," said Pope Francis, referring to delays in the trip caused by Covid, security concerns and the pontiff's own health problems."I have come with two brothers, the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. Together, stretching out our hands, we present ourselves to you and to this people in the name of Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace," the Pope said. But this trip comes at a time when long-term peace and stability in South Sudan seem a distant prospect. It's people are suffering crushing poverty and have little hope in their political leaders.South Sudan's President Salva Kiir Mayardit receives Pope Francis, Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby and Church of Scotland -Left-right: Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, Pope Francis, South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit and Church of Scotland Moderator Iain Greenshields. The youngest nation of the world has been ravaged by a bloody civil war since its leaders disagreed over control of the oil-rich country in 2013, just two years after its independence from Sudan.More than 400,000 people are thought to have died as a result of the conflict and though a peace deal in 2018 created a unity government, some of its key provisions have not been implemented.More than 60% of the population of South Sudan is estimated to be Christian, mainly belonging to Catholic, Anglican and Presbyterian traditions, though the war has been fought along ethnic and not religious lines. The battle for control mainly raged between the supporters of President Salva Kiir, an ethnic Dinka, and supporters of the First Vice-President Riek Machar, a Nuer.Despite the deal, and the fact that they are working together, relations between the two men remain strained and there appears to be a lack of trust.Violence continues in parts of the country driven by ethnic tensions as well as a splinter group from Mr Machar's party - at least 20 people were killed during a cattle raid on the eve of the religious leaders' visit. In 2019, in one of the most dramatic moments of his papacy, Pope Francis kissed the feet of the leaders at the end of a retreat at the Vatican, at a time when it looked like the fragile peace agreement was about to collapse. It was then that a commitment was made for the three Christian leaders to visit South Sudan."Pope Francis knelt to kiss the feet of each politician. Almost five years later, we come to you in this way again: on our knees to wash feet, to listen, serve and pray with you," Archbishop Welby said in Juba. There is considerable anticipation in South Sudan at what is a sensitive time."After the 2019 retreat, our political leaders made a pledge that they will never take the country back to war," said Father James Oyet Latansio, general-secretary of the South Sudan Council of Churches.Fr Oyet referred to the visit as an "ecumenical pilgrimage of peace" and feels the three religious leaders are uniquely placed to influence South Sudan's politicians, most of whom are church-going Christians: Mr Kiir, a Catholic and Mr Machar, Presbyterian."It will be a strong voice, a moral voice calling on the leaders of South Sudan telling them: 'Please now, give the people of South Sudan the peace they deserve,'" Fr Oyet said.In an ugly, bloody battle for control of resources that morality has often been devastatingly absent."The conflict has brought so many brutal experiences to the people, it affects the spiritual life of the people and battles their hope and their trust in God"", Source: Father John Gbemboyo Mbikoyezu, Source description: Sudan and South Sudan Catholic Bishops' Conference co-ordinator, "The conflict has brought so many brutal experiences to the people, it affects the spiritual life of the people and battles their hope and their trust in God"", Source: Father John Gbemboyo Mbikoyezu, Source description: Sudan and South Sudan Catholic Bishops' Conference co-ordinator, Image: Father John Gbemboyo Mbikoyezu."We are a majority Christian country, but what we are practising is not in keeping with Christian values," said Father John Gbemboyo Mbikoyezu of the Sudan and South Sudan Catholic Bishops' Conference."The conflict has brought so many brutal experiences to the people, it affects the spiritual life of the people and battles their hope and their trust in God," he said.Fr Gbemboyo said he was looking for a message of peace from the three visiting religious leaders but he, like Fr Oyet, also wants the Pope to directly tell South Sudan's leaders to focus on implementing peace for the sake of the country's people. With the capital's notoriously pot-holed roads fixed and the way that Juba has been spruced up, there is no doubt about the significance the leaders attach to this visit. It is intended that there will be joyful, celebratory moments through the trip. The BBC has been told 300 choir members and 70 altar dancers have been rehearsing for months. During the papal Mass in Juba, choir master Angelo Filberto Mussa says they will perform songs composed by South Sudanese."I am so happy the Pope is visiting us since we have been having a lot of issues. His coming will actually change a lot," said Deborah Yar Juma, a member of the congregation of the Anglican Church of South Sudan and a student at the University of Juba."When someone like the Pope comes and talks about peace, there is a hope that they [South Sudan's political leaders] will implement it."Women hold a printed fabric showing the portrait of the three visiting clerics, Juba, South Sudan - 30 January 2023-There is huge excitement in South Sudan over the visit of the three clerics-But there has also, for many years, been frustration in South Sudan directed at global churches that had been keen to support the creation of the state, but once that had been achieved, did not follow through with adequate support in helping build civil society and political institutions.Frustration too in some quarters, that South Sudan's church leaders have not been strong enough advocates for peaceful co-existence among all South Sudanese."Churches both locally and globally failed in their moral responsibility to infuse doses of morality into political life in South Sudan," said Lino Nyaro Ungom, a former high school teacher and community activist in Juba."Moral decadence led to rampant corruption and conflict that led to loss of innocent lives and displacement of millions."If the churches had a strong voice, they would have challenged the politicians who are faithful in their churches and violence could have been prevented."The Pope, Archbishop and Moderator suggest it is precisely that voice that they want to raise in South Sudan now, and that they will not hesitate in speaking frankly to South Sudan's political leaders."We need leaders who care about the values by which our countries live, who care about the conditions in which people live, and who act out their faith in work amongst the most vulnerable and marginalised. These things make for peace," said Rev Ian Greenshields, Moderator of the Church of Scotland, at Juba's Presidential Palace. But in a country where poverty and food insecurity is rife, flooding has caused so much devastation, aid has been cut from some of the very countries, including the UK, that supported its creation, and where ethnic disputes have deepened, there are many obstacles to lasting progress.

CBC-COVID-19 misinformation cost at least 2,800 lives and $300M, new report says-Thu, January 26, 2023 at 6:00 a.m. EST

The spread of COVID-19 misinformation in Canada cost at least 2,800 lives and $300 million in hospital expenses over nine months of the pandemic, according to estimates in a new report out Thursday. The report — released by the Council of Canadian Academies (CCA), an independent research organization that receives federal funding — examined how misinformation affected COVID infections, hospitalizations and deaths between March and November of 2021.The authors suggest that misinformation contributed to vaccine hesitancy for 2.3 million Canadians. Had more people been willing to roll up their sleeves when a vaccine was first available to them, Canada could have seen roughly 200,000 fewer COVID cases and 13,000 fewer hospitalizations, the report says.Alex Himelfarb, chair of the expert panel that wrote the report, said that its estimates are very conservative because it only examined a nine-month period of the pandemic."It's pretty clear that tens of thousands of hospitalizations did occur because of misinformation," Himelfarb told reporters. "We are confident that those are conservative estimates."Himelfarb also said the $300 million estimate covers only hospital costs — the study didn't include indirect costs associated with factors such as delayed elective surgeries and lost wages.A number of studies have found that getting vaccinated can reduce the risk of COVID infection and hospitalization. But only 80 per cent of Canadians have been fully vaccinated, according to the latest data from Health Canada. The CCA report defines two groups of vaccine-hesitant individuals: those who were reluctant to get a shot and those who refused. It says that reluctant individuals expressed concerns about vaccines in general and questioned the speed with which COVID vaccines were developed.Vaccine refusers, on the other hand, were more likely to believe that the pandemic is a hoax or greatly exaggerated, the report says.Beyond the health impacts, misinformation is depriving people of their right to be informed, said Stephan Lewandowsky, a professor at the University of Bristol's School of Psychological Science in the U.K. and one of the report's authors."In a democracy, the public should be able to understand the risks we're facing … and act on that basis," he said. "But if you're drenched in misinformation … then you're distorting the public's ability — and you're denying people the right — to be informed about the risks they're facing."The report says misinformation relies on simple messages meant to evoke emotional reactions. It says misinformation is often presented as coming from a credible source, such as a scientific publication.Ideology can play a role: authors-The authors also suggest that misinformation can be driven by someone's personal worldview, ideology or political identity."Denial of collective action problems is going to be very [prevalent] among people who don't like collective action," Himelfarb said, noting that misinformation can flow into political messaging."When misinformation becomes tied up with identity and ideology, political leaders will often look to misinformation as a means of building their coalition," he said. He did not point to any single politician.People's Party of Canada Leader Maxime Bernier, a vocal opponent of COVID-19 public health restrictions and vaccine passports, appeared to unify a portion of the electorate that views pandemic policies as government overreach when he finished with roughly five per cent of the vote in the 2021 election.Lewandowsky said social media can contribute to the spread of misinformation, but policies to counter such misinformation — such as requiring labels on inaccurate information — could help.Himelfarb said it's important to balance tackling misinformation with freedom of expression."Finding that sweet spot is a challenge," he said.Lewandowsky said one way to strike a balance would be to make sure reliable information is more widely available and to give people tools to identify misinformation."The people who do misinform us have a certain repertoire of rhetorical techniques … and we can identify those," he said.

Protests erupt in Memphis after Tyre Nichols video released-Graeme Massie-Fri, January 27, 2023 at 8:55 PM EST

Protesters have shut down parts of Interstate 55 in Memphis after the city released videos of the police beating of Tyre Nichols. The videos were released on Friday evening and show five Memphis police officers beating Nichols, 29, during the arrest. He died from his injuries three days after the shocking incident. The five officers, all of whom are Black, were immediately fired from the force and now face murder charges. The protests began shortly after the video was released at 7pm ET, with a large crowd taking to I-55 in downtown Memphis headed towards the Mississippi River bridge, according to ABC24.Shortly after the video’s release at 6 p.m., a large crowd took to I-55 in downtown Memphis and appeared to be headed towards the Mississippi River Bridge. There were no immediate reports of damage, according to the news channel.Protesters then also headed towards the city’s police station, according to NBC News.Meanwhile, groups of protesters also gathered in New York’s Times Square, Washington DC and Atlanta, Georgia. The footage shows the Black officers savagely beating the 29-year-old FedEx worker for three minutes in an assault that the Nichols family’s legal team likened to the infamous 1991 police beating of Los Angeles motorist Rodney King.Officers who caught up with Nichols after he fled the scene of the initial stop then wrestled him to the ground and pepper spray was seemingly deployed in Nichols’s face.“I am going to baton the f**k out of you,” one officer can be heard shouting., while another says “Watch out, I’ll spray your a** again.”Nichols on the ground can be heard crying out loudly for his mother. The officers then can be heard on bodycam video repeatedly shouting at Nichols “give me your f***ing hands.”Another officer can be heard saying, “That mother f**** made me spray myself” with pepper spray. The video then showed Nichols slumped against a car while the officers stood around laughing, recounting the arrest and what they had done to capture him.“I jumped in, started rocking him,” one officer can be heard bragging as another claimed that Nichols put his hand on their gun.“He literally had his hand on my gun. That mother*****r was on there,” the officer stated.

An asteroid will whip by Earth tonight in one of closest approaches ever recorded-NASA says while it will be close, there is no risk the delivery truck-sized asteroid will hit the planet-The Associated Press · Posted: Jan 25, 2023 5:57 PM PST |

An asteroid the size of a delivery truck will whip past Earth on Thursday night, one of the closest such encounters ever recorded.NASA insists it will be a near miss with no chance of the asteroid hitting Earth. The U.S. space agency said Wednesday that this newly discovered asteroid will zoom 3,600 kilometres above the southern tip of South America. That's 10 times closer than the bevy of communication satellites circling overhead. The closest approach will occur at 7:27 p.m. ET.-Moonshots, meteors and planets: Here are just a few things to look forward to in space in 2023-Even if the space rock came a lot closer, scientists said most of it would burn up in the atmosphere, with some of the bigger pieces possibly falling as meteorites.NASA's impact hazard assessment system, called Scout, quickly ruled out a strike, said its developer, Davide Farnocchia, an engineer at the agency's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif."But despite the very few observations, it was nonetheless able to predict that the asteroid would make an extraordinarily close approach with Earth," Farnocchia said in a statement."In fact, this is one of the closest approaches by a known near-Earth object ever recorded."Asteroid spotted by amateur astronomer in Crimea-Discovered Saturday, the asteroid known as 2023 BU is believed to be 3.5 to 8.5 metres across. It was first spotted by Gennady Borisov, the same amateur astronomer in Crimea who discovered an interstellar comet in 2019.NASA's planetary defence test successfully shifts asteroid orbit 'We have impact!' NASA slams spacecraft into asteroid in unprecedented test Within a few days, dozens of observations were made by astronomers around the world, allowing them to refine the asteroid's orbit. The asteroid's path will be drastically altered by Earth's gravity once it zips by. Instead of circling the sun every 359 days, it will move into an oval orbit lasting 425 days, according to NASA.

Breaking News-7 killed, several hurt in shooting attack at Jerusalem synagogue; terrorist shot-Police say officers kill gunman who fled scene of attack at Neve Yaakov neighborhood, opened fire on forces-By Emanuel Fabian    Today, 8:31 pmUpdated at 9:39 pm

Seven people were shot and killed and several more wounded in a terror shooting attack at a synagogue in Jerusalem’s Neve Yaakov neighborhood, police and medics said Friday night.According to police, the terrorist arrived by car at around 8:15 p.m. at a building used as a synagogue in the neighborhood in the northern part of East Jerusalem and opened fire. The attacker then fled the scene toward the Palestinian neighborhood of Beit Hanina — several hundred meters away — where he encountered officers who were called to the scene.Police said the terrorist — a resident of East Jerusalem — was shot dead after he opened fire on the officers while trying to escape on foot.According to Channel 12 news, the terrorist first shot an elderly woman in the street, then encountered a motorcycle rider and shot him, before reaching the synagogue. Police did not immediately confirm the details.Three victims — a woman in her 70s listed in critical condition, a 20-year-old man in serious condition and a 14-year-old boy in moderate-serious condition — were taken to the Hadassah Mount Scopus hospital. Another two victims — a man in his 30s in critical condition and a woman in her 60s in moderate condition — were taken to the Shaare Zedek hospital.Jerusalem District Police Commander Doron Turgeman, speaking to reporters at the scene, said two of the wounded victims had died, bringing the death toll to seven. The victims were not immediately named.Dozens of officers were dispatched to the scene, police said.National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, who is in charge of police, arrived at the scene of the attack. Citizens at the scene shouted various comments at the minister, some in support for retribution, some in anger. Some called out “Death to terrorists.”“It’s on your watch!” one man cried. “Let’s see what you do now.”Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, who was in the United States for a personal trip, was to head back to Israel on Friday night following the attack, his office said.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was set to hold an assessment with top security officials.Local residents told Channel 12 news that it took 20 minutes for the police to arrive. “It’s a disgrace,” one man said.Police responded to the accusation saying officers had arrived at the scene and killed the terrorist within five minutes of the first reports of gunfire. The terrorist was named as Aqlam Khayri, 21, a resident of East Jerusalem with no prior terror-related offenses, Hebrew-language media reports said.Friday’s deadly attack came following days of violence in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. Tensions have increased dramatically since Thursday morning, when an Israel Defense Forces raid in the West Bank against a terrorist cell left nine Palestinians dead — most of them gunmen and members of the cell, though at least one civilian was also killed.Thursday overnight saw rocket fire from Palestinian terror groups in Gaza and Israeli retaliatory air strikes as both sides appeared intent on avoiding an escalation into a full-scale war.Tensions were also high in Jerusalem and the Temple Mount on Friday, though Muslim prayers went ahead without issue.

Israeli envoy: The UN, founded upon ashes of Holocaust, is failing its purpose-Gilad Erdan says world body holds ‘heinous double standard’ against Jewish state, calls for action against officials who have made antisemitic statements-By Luke Tress-JAN 27,23-Today, 7:52 pm

UNITED NATIONS — Israel’s ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan, lashed the world body for its disproportionate focus on Israel and for antisemitism in its ranks in a speech to the General Assembly on Friday marking Holocaust Remembrance Day.“The UN was founded upon the ashes of the Holocaust. It was established to ensure such darkness never befell humanity again,” Erdan said. “It is a living monument to the horrors suffered by the Jewish people.”“As such, it is the UN’s responsibility to lead the world in combating hatred, yet when it comes to fighting antisemitism, sadly, the UN ignores its purpose,” he said to an audience that included UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Holocaust survivors and Erdan’s parents, the children of survivors.“Educational programs are very, very important. Learning about history is crucial. But at a time when antisemitism is on the rise and Holocaust denial is spreading, words are not enough,” Erdan said. “In the past year, what has the UN done to combat bigotry? There’s a politicized — we all know it — and an institutionalized bias among member states. This bias is the source of the disproportionate number of anti-Israel resolutions.”The UN General Assembly condemned Israel more than all other countries combined last year, and the Jewish State is the only country with a mandated agenda item at every session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.“Mandating Israel bashing at every council session, singling out the one and only Jewish state — yes, it is antisemitism, and on Holocaust Remembrance Day it is our duty to call out this heinous double standard,” Erdan said.He blasted the UN for inaction against officials who have made antisemitic statements, including two UN-appointed investigators into Israel, Miloon Kothari and Francesca Alabanese.Kothari, a member of the UN’s Commission of Inquiry into Israel, said last year that the “Jewish lobby” controlled social media and questioned why Israel was allowed in the UN. Albanese, the special rapporteur on the Palestinian territories, has said the “Jewish lobby” has subjugated the US, compared Israelis to the Nazis, sympathized with terror groups and said Israel starts wars out of greed. Her antisemitism was exposed by The Times of Israel last year. Both investigators are harshly critical of Israel and their official UN reports almost entirely ignore Palestinian terror and violence.“Similar to Mr. Kothari, Ms. Albanese still remains in her role and has been met with zero UN condemnations,” Erdan said.Neither official has faced any repercussions from the UN for their antisemitism. Guterres has spoken out against antisemitism in the past year amid controversy over their statements. His office has said the investigators are appointed by the Human Rights Council and are outside of his purview.A bipartisan group of US Congress members this week called on Guterres to remove Albanese from her position.Erdan also blasted the UN agency for the Palestinians, UNRWA, for antisemitism in its ranks, said other UN agencies distort casualty figures for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict by minimizing Israeli deaths, and censured the UN for not adopting the widely accepted IHRA definition of antisemitism.“When it comes to anything related to Isreal this organization is very quick to respond and condemn, but when it comes to Jew hatred the silence is deafening,” he said. “This double standard is disgraceful.”“We all know that the libels of antisemitism are always followed by horrific actions, so I beg you that our words today also be followed by actions. The UN must remember its mission and history. It must take a stand against antisemitism,” Erdan said.Guterres, speaking ahead of Erdan, likened today’s climate to the rhetoric in 1930s Germany that led to the Holocaust, saying the rise of the Nazis was made possible by “the indifference, if not connivance, of so many millions.”“We now know the terrifying depths of the abyss into which Germany would plunge, but the alarm bells were already ringing in 1933. Too few bothered to listen, and fewer still spoke out. Today, we can hear echoes of those same siren songs to hate,” he said.“The painful truth is antisemitism is everywhere. In fact, it is increasing in intensity,” he said, citing surveys and attacks on Jews in New York, Los Angeles, Australia and Germany.Guterres was especially critical of rhetoric on the internet and the entities responsible.“The threat is global, and it is growing. And a leading accelerant of this growth is the online world. Today, I am issuing an urgent appeal to everyone with influence across the information ecosystem – regulators, policymakers, technology companies, the media, civil society and governments. Stop the hate. Set up guardrails, and enforce them,” he said.On Thursday, Guterres, Erdan and Yad Vashem Chairman Dani Dayan toured an installation at UN headquarters commemorating the Holocaust. Bank CEOs warn PM of signs funds moving out of country amid judicial shakeup-Netanyahu meets with businesspeople amid concerns that weakening courts will harm economy, insists opposite will occur; says open to dialogue but overhaul to go ahead without delay-By TOI staff-JAN 27,23-Today, 6:04 pmUpdated at 9:28 pm

Israeli bank chiefs warned Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of potential economic fallout from his government’s proposals for a sweeping makeover of the country’s judiciary Friday, as he said he was open to dialogue but insisted that he will not slow efforts to advance the judicial overhaul.Netanyahu met at his Likud party’s headquarters in Tel Aviv with the heads of several of Israel’s largest banks and other businesspeople, seeking to push back against a growing chorus of warnings from top business leaders and senior economists.Bank Hapoalim CEO Dov Kotler told Netanyahu that banks have started to see an outflow of funds in recent days, with various savings accounts being moved from Israel abroad.“It’s still not on a dramatic scale but we are concerned this is the start of trend,” Kotler was quoted as saying by the Walla news site and Channel 12.Discount Bank CEO Uri Levin said: “It’s impossible to ignore all the economic figures expressing so much concern over the moves, and therefore you need to stop immediately and only advance changes cautiously and with broad agreement. Maybe we are wrong and you’re right, but the price of a mistake could be a fatal blow to democracy and the economy.”Also present was Samer Haj-Yehia, chairman of Bank Leumi, businessman and Netanyahu associate Shlomi Fogel, and tech venture capitalists Michael Eisenberg and Chemi Peres, the son of late president Shimon Peres.“The public is determined to fight. This is a cross-party war between Israeli citizens and the government. You don’t lead a revolution like this without changes or dialogue. You need to stop this madness and start to talk,” Peres said, according to Channel 12.Netanyahu argued during the meeting that excess judicial oversight was hampering economic growth.“The great success of Israel’s economy isn’t because of judicialization but in spite of it,” he was quoted as saying in a Likud statement. “The judicial reform will help Israel’s economy and businesses.”“Not only will the reform not harm the economy, it will cause it to take off,” he added.Netanyahu also said that Justice Minister Yariv Levin, a member of his Likud party and the leading figure in the push to upend the justice system, was open to discussing his planned changes with opponents — “alongside the legislative process and without delaying it.”“Up until now we haven’t heard any willingness by the other side for enacting change. Even the smallest change in the eyes of the critics is ‘the end of democracy,'” Netanyahu said in the meeting,Channel 12 and Ynet, citing unidentified sources, reported that the intense public backlash to the planned overhaul has surprised and disturbed Netanyahu, who had hoped to pass changes without bringing on such widespread condemnations and high-profile opposition from numerous leading figures. The reports said Netanyahu had also wanted to avoid becoming the face of the sweeping reforms, as his ongoing criminal trial ostensibly precludes him from involving himself directly in issues that could influence his affairs. The reports said the manner in which Levin has handled the issue so far had caused tensions with Netanyahu. Likud in a statement rejected such assertions, saying the minister had the premier’s full support.Speaking to Channel 12 Friday night, Zvika Williger, owner of the Willi-food importer of foodstuffs who was present at the meeting, said: “We’re very worried by what’s happening… the premier completely understands the situation. I think we can trust the prime minister not to carry out a hasty plan. He specified that there will be dialogue. He specified that he’s prepared for the president to be a mediator between the sides…. He told me, ‘I promise we won’t harm the Israeli economy.'”While a smattering of coalition lawmakers have entertained the possibility of compromise — often in guarded, anonymous comments to the media — most have largely ignored calls by the opposition, President Isaac Herzog and others to negotiate over the contours of the overhaul plan.“The fairy tales about ‘dialogue’ don’t convince anyone when they come from a criminal defendant held hostage by younger and more determined [coalition] partners,” opposition leader Yair Lapid tweeted in response to Netanyahu’s remarks, referring to the premier’s ongoing trial on graft charges.
“We won’t stop going out to demonstrate against the shattering of democracy in Israel,” Lapid added. As presented by Levin, the coalition’s proposals would severely restrict the High Court’s capacity to strike down laws and government decisions, with an “override clause” enabling the Knesset to re-legislate struck-down laws with a bare majority of 61; give the government complete control over the selection of judges; prevent the court from using a test of “reasonableness” to judge legislation and government decisions; and allow ministers to appoint their own legal advisers, instead of getting counsel from advisers operating under the aegis of the Justice Ministry.Critics have staged a series of large protests saying the changes will gut the courts, leave minority rights unprotected and concentrate too much power in the hands of the ruling coalition. Proponents say the current system gives unelected judges and lawyers too much power over elected officials.Opponents of the changes rallied Friday in Jerusalem where several hundred people took part in a protest convoy and demonstration.Demonstrators drove from Latrun in the Ayalon Valley to the capital, where they held a rally outside the Supreme Court, vowing to defend it from plans to weaken its power and increase political influence. Some demonstrators formed a human chain outside the Supreme Court “to protect” it.Among the participants was former Likud justice minister Dan Meridor, who said protesters were fighting “for the core values of the state as written in the Declaration of Independence; a move… from an independent justice system to biased judges appointed by the ruler; from fighting corruption to removing all constraints.”Meanwhile, 40 more economists — led by American Nobel Prize-winning economist Eric Maskin and Israel Prize recipient Menahem Yaari — signed a letter released earlier this week against the proposed overhaul, bringing the number of signatories to 310.“The reform of the judicial system endangers the Israeli economy and may cause a drop in Israel’s credit rating, lead investors to flee and bring a brain drain,” they said. “Many studies have already proven that the concentration of vast political power in the hands of the ruling group without strong checks and balances could lead the country to economic decay.”The letter, initially published Wednesday, has been signed by both right- and left-leaning senior academics, including Nobel Prize winner Prof. Daniel Kahneman and former Netanyahu economic adviser and National Economic Council head Prof. Eugene Kandel. Its release came a day after Bank of Israel Governor Amir Yaron reportedly outlined for Netanyahu the potential consequences of weakening the courts and relayed warnings made by senior economic figures and officials from credit rating firms during his recent meetings at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
According to Israeli television reports, Yaron explicitly told Netanyahu that the shakeup would harm the economy.A pair of Yaron’s successors, Karnit Flug and Jacob Frenkel, has also spoken out against the government’s plans, warning in an op-ed Sunday that it could negatively affect Israel’s credit rating and “deal a severe blow to the economy and its citizens,” a warning voiced by many workers in the tech sector.

Putin blasts ‘neo-Nazis’ in Ukraine on Holocaust Remembrance Day-Russian leader says ‘forgetting the lessons of history leads to the repetition of terrible tragedies’ as he continues to compare war against Hitler with current conflict-By AFP-JAN 23,-Today, 4:42 pm

MOSCOW — Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday repeated a claim that neo-Nazis were committing crimes in Ukraine — an allegation Moscow has used to justify its military intervention — as the world marked Holocaust Remembrance Day.“Forgetting the lessons of history leads to the repetition of terrible tragedies,” Putin said.“This is evidenced by the crimes against civilians, ethnic cleansing and punitive actions organized by neo-Nazis in Ukraine. It is against that evil that our soldiers are bravely fighting,” he said in a statement.
Supporters of Putin’s military operation allege Ukraine’s treatment of Russian speakers in the country is comparable with the actions of Nazi Germany. One of the goals of the operation was the “de-Nazification” of Ukraine, Putin said, when he announced nearly one year ago he had ordered Russian troops toward Kyiv. The claims have been blasted by the Ukrainian government, the country’s Jewish community and world leaders. The Soviet Union’s victory over Hitler’s army — long a symbol of patriotic pride for Russians — has taken center stage since the beginning of the military intervention.Putin said that “attempts to revise the contributions of our country to the Great Victory (against Hitler) actually equate to justifying the crimes of Nazism and open the way for the revival of its deadly ideology.”Friday is the 78th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp built by Nazi Germany in occupied Poland — a date that has become International Holocaust Remembrance Day.The Auschwitz museum did not invite Russian representatives to the ceremony marking the day the Soviet Red Army liberated the Nazi camp because of the offensive in Ukraine.“Russia will need an extremely long time and very deep self-examination after this conflict in order to return to gatherings of the civilized world,” Piotr Sawicki, a spokesman for the museum at the site of the former camp, told AFP.Russia’s Chief Rabbi Berel Lazar told AFP that “for us, this is clearly a humiliation because we perfectly know and remember the role of the Red Army in the liberation of Auschwitz and in the victory over Nazism.”“These political games have no place on Holocaust day,” Lazar added.

Chemical weapons watchdog blames Syria’s air force for deadly 2018 chlorine attack-Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons investigation finds ‘reasonable grounds to believe’ helicopter dropped two cylinders containing gas, killing 43-By Mike Corder    Today, 2:27 pm

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — An investigation by the global chemical weapons watchdog established there are “reasonable grounds to believe” Syria’s air force dropped two cylinders containing chlorine gas on the city of Douma in April 2018, killing 43 people.A report published Friday by a team from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons offered the latest confirmation that the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad used chemical weapons during his country’s grinding civil war.“The use of chemical weapons in Douma – and anywhere – is unacceptable and a breach of international law,” OPCW Director-General Fernando Arias said. The organization said that “reasonable grounds to believe” is the standard of proof consistently adopted by international fact-finding bodies and commissions of inquiry.Syria, which joined the OPCW in 2013 under pressure from the international community after being blamed for another deadly chemical weapon attack, does not recognize the investigation team’s authority and has repeatedly denied using chemical weapons.Despite the latest findings, bringing perpetrators in Syria to justice remains a long way off. Syria’s ally Russia has, in the past, blocked efforts by the UN Security Council to order an International Criminal Court investigation in Syria.“The world now knows the facts – it is up to the international community to take action, at the OPCW and beyond,” Arias, a veteran Spanish diplomat, said. The report said there are “reasonable grounds to believe” that during a government military offensive to recapture Douma, at least one Syrian air force Mi8/17 helicopter dropped two yellow cylinders on the city. One of the cylinders hit the roof of a three-story residential building and ruptured, “rapidly released toxic gas, chlorine, in very high concentrations, which rapidly dispersed within the building killing 43 named individuals and affecting dozens more,” according to the report.A second cylinder burst through the roof of another building into an apartment below and only partially ruptured, “mildly affecting those who first arrived at the scene,” the report added.Syrian authorities refused the investigation team access to the sites of the chlorine attacks. The country had its OPCW voting rights suspended in 2021 as punishment for the repeated use of toxic gas, the first such sanction imposed on a member nation. The painstaking investigation by the organization’s team was set up to identify perpetrators of chemical weapon attacks in Syria, built on earlier findings by an OPCW fact-finding mission that chlorine was used as a weapon in Douma. The investigators also interviewed dozens of witnesses and studied the blood and urine of survivors as well as samples of soil and building materials, according to the watchdog agency. The investigators also carefully assessed and rejected alternative theories for what happened, including Syria’s claim that the attack was staged and that bodies of people killed elsewhere in Syria were taken to Douma to look like victims of a gas attack. The report found that the two cylinders carrying chlorine were modified and filled at the Dumayr air base and the helicopter or helicopters that dropped them were under control of the Syrian military’s elite Tiger Force. The OPCW team “considered a range of possible scenarios and tested their validity against the evidence they gathered and analyzed to reach their conclusion: that the Syrian Arab Air Forces are the perpetrators of this attack,” the organization said in a statement. The ongoing conflict that started in Syria more than a decade ago has killed hundreds of thousands and displaced half the country’s prewar population of 23 million.
