CNN’s Jeff Zucker resigns over undisclosed relationship in Chris Cuomo investigation-Updated: Feb. 02, 2022, 10:40 a.m. | Published: Feb. 02, 2022, 10:40 a.m.By Geoff Herbert | gherbert@syracuse.com

CNN boss Jeff Zucker is resigning, effective immediately, over an undisclosed relationship. The cable news network announced Wednesday that Zucker is stepping down as CNN Worldwide president and Chairman of WarnerMedia News and Sports after being asked about a “consensual relationship” as part of an investigation into former host Chris Cuomo.“As part of the investigation into Chris Cuomo’s tenure at CNN, I was asked about a consensual relationship with my closest colleague, someone I have worked with for more than 20 years. I acknowledged the relationship evolved in recent years. I was required to disclose it when it began but I didn’t. I was wrong,” Zucker said in a statement. “As a result, I am resigning today.”Zucker did not name the colleague, but CNN reports it was Allison Gollust, the chief marketing officer for CNN. Gollust is expected to remain at CNN.Jason Killar, the CEO of CNN parent WarnerMedia said he accepted Zucker’s resignation and would announce an interim leadership plan “shortly.”Zucker, who previously served as president and CEO of NBCUniversal, oversaw CNN, CNN International, HLN and CNN Digital during his nine years with CNN Worldwide.Cuomo, the younger brother of former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, was fired in December after being accused of sexual harassment and criticized for breaching journalism ethics by helping the former governor deal with his own allegations of misconduct. A representative for Chris Cuomo said the harassment claims against him were untrue.“If the goal in making these false and unvetted accusations was to see Mr. Cuomo punished by CNN, that may explain his unwarranted termination,” the spokesman said.

What is graphene oxide? (MAIN INGREDIENT ) IN KILLER GENE THERAPY VACCINE SHOTS)
Surface Science Blog

Graphene oxide (GO) is the oxidized form of graphene. It is a single-atomic-layered material that is formed by the oxidation of graphite which is cheap and readily available. Graphene oxide is easy to process since it is dispersible in water and other solvents. Due to the oxygen in its lattice graphene oxide is not conductive, but it can be reduced to graphene by chemical methods.Graphene oxide can be processed with solution-based methods-One of the main advantages of graphene oxide is that it is dispersible to water. This makes it possible to use solution-based processes. The primary method for fabrication of graphene films is chemical vapor deposition (CVD). However, this method requires high-temperatures and relatively long deposition times making it expensive. It also limits the deposition to substrates that can tolerate high temperatures making deposition on top of polymers difficult.Solution-based methods include spray, spin, and dip coating as well as Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) depositions. An overview of these methods can be downloaded below.Graphene oxide can be reduced to grapheneAnother benefit of graphene oxide is that it can be reduced to graphene by using chemical, thermal or electrochemical methods. The material produced is called reduced graphene oxide (rGO). The rGO is one of the most obvious solutions to be used when large quantities of graphene are needed for industrial applications such as energy storage. The reduction process is thus vital as it has a large impact on the quality of the rGO produced.Reducing GO by using chemical reduction is very scalable but unfortunately, the quality of the produced rGO is typically poor. Thermally reducing GO requires temperatures as high 1000 °C or more which damages the structure of the graphene platelets. However, the overall quality of the produced rGO is quite good. Electrochemical methods have been shown to produce very high-quality rGO, almost identical to pristine graphene. However, the method still suffers from scalability issues.Once reduced graphene oxide has been produced, there are numerous ways that can be used to functionalize it. This will enhance the properties of the rGO film to be used in various applications.

Pfizer asks FDA to allow COVID-19 vaccine for kids under 5-“I have been waiting and waiting and waiting."By LAURAN NEERGAARD and MATTHEW PERRONE, Associated Press-February 2, 2022 | 7:57 AM

WASHINGTON (AP) — Pfizer on Tuesday asked the U.S. to authorize extra-low doses of its COVID-19 vaccine for children under 5, potentially opening the way for the very youngest Americans to start receiving shots as early as March. In an extraordinary move, the Food and Drug Administration had urged Pfizer and its partner BioNTech to apply earlier than the companies had planned — and before it’s settled if the youngsters will need two shots or three. The nation’s 19 million children under 5 are the only group not yet eligible for vaccination against the coronavirus. Many parents have been pushing for an expansion of shots to toddlers and preschoolers, especially as the omicron variant sent record numbers of youngsters to the hospital.“I would say the parents in my office are desperate” to get young kids vaccinated, said Dr. Dyan Hes, who runs a pediatrics practice in New York City, where vaccination rates are high. For many, “that’s the first thing they ask when they walk through the door: ‘When do you think the shot is going to come out?’”Pfizer aims to give children as young as 6 months shots that contain one-tenth of the dose given to adults. The company said it had started submitting its data to the FDA and expects to complete the process in a few days.An open question is how many shots those children will need. Two of the extra-low doses turned out to be strong enough for babies but not for preschoolers in early testing. Pfizer now is testing a third shot, data that’s expected in late March. That means the FDA may consider whether to authorize two shots for now, with potentially a third shot being cleared later if the study supports it.Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said in a statement that company scientists believe this age group ultimately will need three of the extra low-dose shots but that FDA action now could let parents begin the vaccination process while awaiting a final decision. The FDA said it will convene a panel of independent researchers and physicians in mid-February to help review the Pfizer data. The agency isn’t required to follow their advice, but the input is a key step in publicly vetting vaccine safety and effectiveness. The question of how long to wait for new vaccine data — and how much to require — is a concern for FDA regulators, who face pressure to be more proactive against a virus that has repeatedly confounded health experts. The FDA asked Pfizer to begin submitting its application now due to omicron’s “greater toll on children,” an agency spokeswoman said, citing a peak in cases among children under 5.“In light of these new data and the rise in illnesses and hospitalization in this youngest age group, FDA believed that it was prudent to request that Pfizer submit the data it had available,” agency spokeswoman Stephanie Caccomo said in an emailed statement. The FDA’s ultimate decision could come within the month, but that isn’t the only hurdle. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also has to sign off.The Biden administration has been trying to speed the authorization of COVID-19 shots for children, contending vaccinations are critical for opening schools and day care centers and keeping them open, and for freeing up parents from child care duties so they can go back to work.Yet vaccination rates have been lower among children than in other age groups. As of last week, just 20% of kids ages 5 to 11 and just over half of 12- to 17-year-olds were fully vaccinated, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. Nearly three-quarters of adults are fully vaccinated.Young children are far less likely than adults to get severely ill from the coronavirus, but it can happen, and pediatric COVID-19 infections are higher than at any other point in the pandemic.“What we’re seeing right now is still a lot of hospitalizations and unfortunately some deaths in this age group,” said Dr. Sean O’Leary of the University of Colorado, who is on the AAP’s infectious disease committee. If the FDA clears vaccinations for these youngsters, “that’s going to be really important because all of those hospitalizations and deaths essentially are preventable.”For kids under 5, Pfizer’s study is giving participants two shots three weeks apart, followed by a third dose at least two months later. The company is testing whether the youngsters produce antibody levels similar to those known to protect teens and young adults. In December, Pfizer announced that children under 2 looked to be protected but that the antibody response was too low in 2- to 4-year-olds. It’s not clear why, but one possibility is that the extra-low dose was a little too low for the preschoolers.Since the preliminary results showed the shots were safe, Pfizer added a third dose to the testing in hopes of improving protection.A Kaiser Family Foundation poll found just 3 in 10 parents of children under 5 would get their youngster vaccinated as soon as shots were authorized, while about a quarter said they definitely would not. Results of the survey of 1,536 adults, conducted in mid-January, were released Tuesday.Chicago health officials have been trying to prepare parents for months for the day the shots are available, said Dr. Nimmi Rajagopal, a family medicine physician for Cook County Health, which oversees the public hospital system. Some parents wonder how rigorously the shots will be evaluated or have other questions that she said are critical to address.Rajagopal is excited about getting her own 2-year-old son vaccinated if FDA clears the way, so it will be safer for him to play with other children.“I have been waiting and waiting and waiting,” she said.Associated Press journalists Emma H. ABC suspends Whoopi Goldberg over Holocaust race remarks“My words upset so many people, which was never my intention,” she said.By Associated Press-02/01/2022 10:29 PM EST

NEW YORK — Whoopi Goldberg has been suspended for two weeks as co-host of “The View” because of what the head of ABC News called her “wrong and hurtful comments” about Jews and the Holocaust.“While Whoopi has apologized, I’ve asked her to take time to reflect and learn about the impact of her comments. The entire ABC News organization stands in solidarity with our Jewish colleagues, friends, family and communities,” ABC News President Kim Godwin said in a statement posted Tuesday on Twitter. The suspension came a day after Goldberg’s comment during a discussion on “The View” that race was not a factor in the Holocaust. Goldberg apologized hours later and again on Tuesday’s morning episode, but the original remark drew condemnation from several prominent Jewish leaders.“My words upset so many people, which was never my intention,” she said Tuesday morning. “I understand why now and for that I am deeply, deeply grateful because the information I got was really helpful and helped me understand some different things.”Goldberg made her original comments during a discussion on the show Monday about a Tennessee school board’s banning of “Maus,” a Pulitzer Prize-winning graphic novel about the Nazi death camps during World War II. She said the Holocaust was “not about race ... it’s about man’s inhumanity to other man.”“I misspoke,” Goldberg said at the opening of Tuesday’s show.“The View” brought on Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League and author of “It Could Happen Here,” on Tuesday to discuss why her words had been hurtful.“Jewish people at the moment are feeling besieged,” Greenblatt said.Rabbi Abraham Cooper, associate dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, praised Goldberg for being outspoken over the years on social issues but said he struggled to understand her statement on the Holocaust.“The only explanation that I have for it is that there is a new definition of racism that has been put out there in the public recently that defines racism exclusively as the targeting of people of color. And obviously history teaches us otherwise,” Cooper said.“Everything about Nazi Germany and about the targeting of the Jews and about the Holocaust was about race and racism. That’s the unfortunate, unassailable historic fact,” he said.Kenneth L. Marcus, chairman of the Louis D. Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law, linked Goldberg’s remarks to broader misconceptions of the Holocaust, Jewish identity and antisemitism.“In her error, she was reflecting a misunderstanding of Jewish identity that is both widespread and dangerous that is sometimes described as erasive antisemitism,” said Marcus, who is the author of ‘The Definition of Anti-Semitism.’“It is the notion that Jews should be viewed only as being white, privileged oppressors,” he said. “It denies Jewish identity and involves a whitewashing of Jewish history.”Marcus referred to the use of anti-Jewish stereotypes “about being powerful, controlling and sinister,” coupled with downplaying or denying antisemitism. In Israel, being Jewish is rarely seen in racial terms, in part because of the country’s great diversity. Yet Jewish identity goes far beyond religion. Israelis typically refer to the “Jewish people” or “Jewish nation,” describing a group or civilization bound together by a shared history, culture, language and traditions and deep ties to Jewish communities overseas. On “The View” Monday, Goldberg, who is Black, had expressed surprise that some Tennessee school board members were uncomfortable about nudity in “Maus.”“I mean, it’s about the Holocaust, the killing of 6 million people, but that didn’t bother you?” she said. “If you’re going to do this, then let’s be truthful about it. Because the Holocaust isn’t about race. No, it’s not about race.”She continued on that line despite pushback from some of her fellow panelists. The U.S. Holocaust Museum in Washington responded to Goldberg with a tweet.“Racism was central to Nazi ideology. Jews were not defined by religion, but by race. Nazi racist beliefs fueled genocide and mass murder,” it said.

House introduces gender-neutral language in new rules for Congress-New reforms promote inclusion and diversity.By Anagha Srikanth | Jan. 4, 2021

Story at a glance-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi introduced a new set of rules to govern the 117th Congress. These rules include diversity and inclusion measures intended to highlight issues of inequity. One of the rules would promote LGBTQ+ rights through gender-inclusive language.Yes, the United States Congress does have rules. The newly reelected House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Rules Committee Chairman James P. McGovern introduced a new code of conduct ahead of the 117th Congress that includes "sweeping" reforms and promotes diversity and inclusivity. "Democrats have crafted a package of unprecedented, bold reforms, which will make the House more accountable, transparent and effective in our work to meet the needs of the American people.  These future-focused proposals reflect our priorities as a Caucus and as a Country – including crushing the coronavirus, addressing economic disparity, combating the climate crisis, advancing inclusion, and promoting integrity in government," said Pelosi, who was reelected this past Sunday, in a statement. In addition to permanently establishing an Office of Diversity and Inclusion and other diversity measures, the proposed package would "honor all gender identities by changing pronouns and familial relationships in the House rules to be gender neutral." Previously, Congress operated under a binary rule that “words importing one gender include the other as well.”With a record number of LGBTQ+ lawmakers joining the new Congress, the latest rules acknowledge a spectrum of gender identities as well as same-sex relationships. Still, there are no nonbinary representatives in either the House or the Senate, and the nation’s first openly nonbinary lawmaker was elected just last year. America is changing faster than ever! Add Changing America to your Facebook or Twitter feed to stay on top of the news.Several anti-LGBTQ+ policy lawmakers decried the change, including Rep. Kevin McCarthy, who supported the Defense of Marriage act banning same-sex marriage. This is stupid. Signed,- A father, son, and brother https://t.co/bG9SlRAy6N — Kevin McCarthy (@GOPLeader) January 2, 2021-If approved by vote, the rules package would not prevent the use of gendered language, but would rename certain official language. Included in the changes, the Office of the Whistleblower Ombudsman would become the Office of the Whistleblower Ombuds. It would also make steps towards diversifying witness panels at committee hearings and framing legislation through the lens of inequity. Published on Jan 04, 2021

SUNY Professor: “It’s a Mistake” to Think Pedophilia is Wrong-by Paul Joseph Watson-February 2nd 2022, 5:55 am-Claims there are "evolutionary advantages to child/adult sex."

A SUNY professor is under investigation after video clips emerged of him asserting that “it’s a mistake” to think pedophilia is wrong and that there are “evolutionary advantages to child/adult sex.”Yes, really.SUNY Fredonia professor Stephen Kershnar teaches teaches libertarian philosophy and applied ethics at the university. As part of his libertarian philosophy, Kershnar believes that society’s reaction to pedophilia is what’s wrong, and that consenting sexual relationships between adults and children could actually be a good thing.“Imagine that an adult male wants to have sex with a 12-year-old girl. Imagine that she’s a willing participant. A very standard, very widely held view is that there’s something deeply wrong about this. It’s wrong independent of it being criminalized,” said Kershnar.“It’s not obvious to me that it’s in fact wrong,” he continued. “I think this is a mistake. And I think exploring that why it’s a mistake will tell us not only things about adult/sex and statutory rape and also fundamental principles of morality.”Kershnar asserted that there was no minimum age at which pedophilia could be considered wrong. It gets worse. Much worse: pic.twitter.com/OV8Zuk2qg1 — Mythinformed MKE (@MythinformedMKE) February 2, 2022 “The notion that it’s wrong even with a one-year-old is not quite obvious to me,” he luridly claimed. He went on to assert that in some foreign cultures, grandmas perform oral sex on baby boys to calm them down, adding, “It’s hard to see what would be wrong with it.”The professor said claims that it’s wrong because kids “can’t understand” sex can be countered by pointing to other activities children enter into but don’t fully understand, such as judo tournaments or bar mitzvahs. ”Non-Binary” Assistant Professor Calls For ‘Stigma’ of Pedophilia to be ‘Delegitimized’The logical end goal of progressivism.on 12 November, 2021-Paul Joseph Watson

A “non-binary” associate professor at Old Dominion University has called for the “stigma” of pedophilia to be ‘delegitimized’.Yes, really. The Prostasia Foundation, a registered 503c which has called for child-like sex dolls to be legalized, posted an interview with Allyn Walker, a female-to-male transgender, who outlined her views on “minor attraction.”Walker, an assistant professor of sociology and criminal justice at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, is the author of a book called ‘A Long, Dark Shadow: Minor Attracted People and Their Pursuit of Dignity’.In the interview, Walker insists that the term “minor attracted people” should be used in preference to ‘pedophile’ because pedophiles’ feelings might be hurt otherwise."I think we believe societally, that stigma against MAPs serves to protect children because we don’t fully understand the differences between MAPs and sex offenders. Again, we have this confusion between the attraction and a criminal behavior." https://t.co/62YZGg9tbY pic.twitter.com/pPwEOjJUCo — Prostasia Foundation (@ProstasiaInc) November 9, 2021-She also highlights how, “MAP advocacy groups like B4U-Act have advocated for use of the term, and they’ve advocated for it primarily because it’s less stigmatizing than other terms like pedophile.”“4W has previously covered the group B4U-Act, which was founded by convicted multi-child rapist Michael Melsheimer for the explicit purposes of normalizing pedophilia and distracting from prevention efforts,” writes Anna Slatz. “In Melsheimer’s own words, he wanted to ensure B4U-Act was never associated with the “prevention of offending.”During the interview, Walker suggested that pedophilia is merely another form of sexual attraction and should be tolerated.“Sexuality can be fluid, and there are many MAPs who have a range of attractions to both children and adults,” she said.Walker also suggested that stigma against pedophiles is a “huge problem” and that she “empathizes” with how pedos are treated.“Although I’m not a MAP, myself, I am queer, and so I too, have been through experiences and realized that I have attractions many people wouldn’t understand, and that some people find to be immoral. And those experiences have really shaped who I’ve become. And so I sort of empathize with those experiences, and I wanted to learn more,” said Walker.

NY Times SUES State Department for emails related to Hunter Biden, the Romanian embassy and whether the US helped push his personal business interests-The lawsuit, filed Monday in Manhattan court, seeks emails dating 2015 to 2019- The Times alleges that the State Department is failing to address its FOIA request in a timely manner-The Times is seeking emails from Romanian embassy officials connected to Hunter Biden and his former business associate Tony Bobulinski -Hunter Biden was hired by a Romanian real estate tycoon later convicted of bribery in 2016- The tycoon hired Biden to help stage an influence campaign to convince anti-corruption prosecutors to drop the bribery case-By Morgan Phillips, Politics Reporter For Dailymail.Com and Josh Boswell and Brian Stieglitz-Published: 16:24 EST, 1 February 2022 | Updated: 16:26 EST, 1 February 2022

The New York Times has sued the State Department for allegedly dragging its feet in handing over emails from Romanian embassy officials connected to Hunter Biden and his famed former business associate Tony Bobulinski. The lawsuit, filed Monday in Manhattan federal court, seeks emails dating 2015 to 2019. The Times alleges that the State Department is failing to address its Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request in a timely manner. When the Times asked when the State Dept. would get around to the request, the paper was told to expect an answer on April 15, 2023, according to Politico. The Times appears to be looking into whether embassy personnel did any special favors on behalf of business officials, including the president's son and Bobulinski. Joe Biden was serving as vice president for two of the years the emails cover, 2015-2016. Meanwhile, mainstream media outlets initially scoffed at a New York Post report about a laptop purportedly belonging to Hunter Biden that indicated he had introduced Ukrainian energy company executives to his father while he was vice president. They were silent when DailyMail.com obtained information from the laptop revealing that Hunter Biden used the 'N-word' repeatedly in text messages  and may have accidentally overpaid a prostitute $25,000 from an account linked to his dad. Twitter blocked users from sharing the New York Post report at the time it was first reported, as the social media platform had written it off as misinformation Hunter Biden was hired by a Romanian real estate tycoon later convicted of bribery in 2016. Gabriel Popoviciu hired Hunter earlier that year as part of an influence campaign to persuade anti-corruption prosecutors to cut a deal or drop the case, and even represented him in meetings with top U.S. officials - emails from Hunter's laptop show. The request seeks records looking into '(1) the possible improper use of federal government resources to assist and advance private business interests with connections to United States government officials and (2) the possible evasion of the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) by those private business interests, and (3) the non-enforcement of FARA by the federal government in relation to those private business interests.' Emails on Hunter's abandoned laptop, obtained by DailyMail.com in 2021, reveal how Joe Biden's son and his colleagues leveraged their US government connections and plotted a propaganda campaign for the grafting Romanian tycoon. Under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), anyone advocating for foreign entities to US government officials, or acting as a publicist for a foreign entity in the US, must add themselves to a Department of Justice public register. However, an exception applies for attorneys representing a client in a foreign court case, who are not required to register under FARA.Emails show Hunter's colleagues, partners in law firm Boies Schiller Flexner, Christopher Boies and Michael Gottlieb, seeking to set up meetings with the US Ambassador to Romania, after discussing among themselves whether he would intervene in Popoviciu's case.Hunter brought in political heavyweight and family friend Louis Freeh, the former director of the FBI, to use his US law enforcement contacts for Popoviciu's advantage, and was offered a referral fee as a result.Hunter and his colleagues also discussed a media campaign, including to major U.S. publication the Wall Street Journal, to support their client who was later found guilty of bribery.None of them were required to register for this work under FARA, due to various exemptions including those for lawyers of foreign defendants. The FOIA also seeks information on Rudy Giuliani, who was dispatched by former President Trump to dig up dirt on Hunter Biden's business relationships with Ukraine. Giuliani tipped off the New York Post about the bombshell Hunter Biden laptop.  In 2020, Senate Republicans investigated Hunter Biden's $50,000-a-month seat on the board of Ukrainian energy firm Burisma, then mired in corruption, while his father helped shape policy toward Kiev. The matter was at the center of former President Trump's first impeachment - Trump had pressured Ukrainian officials to investigate Hunter's business dealings. Giving the appearance of a conflict of interest, Hunter's board seat alarmed some State Department officials. The elder Biden leveraged $1 billion in aid to Ukraine to force the country to fire prosecutor Viktor Shokin, who was investigating Burisma at the time. But the then-vice president's office said the U.S. wanted Shokin gone because he was not investigating corruption among the country's politicians. But while the investigation found no evidence that Biden as vice president improperly manipulated policy in favor of his son. The Republicans' investigation also found that Hunter had received massive sums of money - some in the seven-figure range - from foreigners in China, Russia and elsewhere while his father was in office. Politico reports that the FOIA request threatens to revive an old feud between the Biden White House and the Times' money and influence reporter Ken Vogel, who has spearheaded coverage of the president's son. Then-deputy campaign manager Kate Bedingfield wrote to the Times' executive editor Dean Bacquet and accused Vogel of 'egregious journalistic malpractice.'  Then-rapid response director Andrew Bates has also sparred with Vogel on Twitter.  'SCOOP from Philadelphia: KEN VOGEL (@kenvogel) is a COWARD,' Bates tweeted in Feb. 2020.Bates claimed that Vogel's report on Hunter Biden's Ukraine dealings in May 2019 'for the first time amplified this misinformation campaign into the mainstream.' Emails found on the laptop pointed to an effort by Hunter to set up a meeting in 2015 between Vadym Pozharskyi, an adviser at a Ukrainian energy firm. The FBI had since seized the laptop from the Delaware computer repair shop owner, who says Hunter dropped it off to him in 2019 and never came to retrieve it. In an article on reporting on the Federal Election Commission's decision that Twitter had not violated election law in restricting sharing of the Post piece, the Times initially called the Post report 'unsubstantiated.' Later in the day, the September 2021 report was quietly updated to remove the word 'unsubstantiated.' The Biden campaign at the time denied the meeting between the then-candidate and Ukrainian officials ever took place, saying it was not on his official calendar. Meanwhile, mainstream left-leaning media outlets were silent when Dailymail.com revealed text messages, exchanged in late 2018 and 2019, recovered from Hunter's laptop showing him repeatedly using the n-word in conversations with his white lawyer George Messires. The salacious and embarrassing texts were revealed in June 2021.The president's son joked in a January 2019 text to corporate attorney George Mesires about a 'big penis', and said to the lawyer: 'I only love you because you're black' and 'true dat n***a'.In another text a month earlier he wrote to the Chicago lawyer saying: 'how much money do I owe you. Becaause (sic) n***a you better not be charging me Hennessy rates.' Mesires replied: 'That made me snarf my coffee.'Hunter added: 'That's what im saying ni…', cutting off the racial slur mid-word, then texted a picture to Mesires. The picture was not downloaded on Hunter's laptop, from which the text exchange was recovered by DailyMail.com.But Mesires replied: 'Why are you so tan?' 'I'm sorry for sexting you accidentally that was meant for another friend named Georgia,' Hunter replied.Liberal-leaning media outlets were again silent when texts obtained by DailyMail.com and the New York Post revealed that Hunter had allegedly overpaid an escort by $25,000 during a drug-filled bender at the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles, from which texts show he was later banned for drug use after the hotel found a whole in the wall of a room where he had stayed. Secret Service agents showed up at his door to tell him the card he'd used was linked to his father, according to the texts. The United States' most popular left-leaning publications and news networks – including The New York Times, Washington Post, CNN and MSNBC – made no mention of the story in the days after it was broken by the Post, and confirmed by DailyMail.com.A December 2018 text message exchange obtained by DailyMail.com show Hunter asked Mesires: 'How much money do I owe you. Becaause (sic) n***a you better not be charging me Hennessy rates'

TRUDEAU INSULTS-CALLS THE TRUCKERS IN OTTAWA NOT CANADIANS-FRINGE EXTREMISTS-
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau strongly condemned the behaviour displayed by some participants in the trucker convoy protests over the weekend, as members of Parliament returned to work on Monday despite downtown Ottawa remaining beset by the “freedom convoy.Trudeau said he and the government will not be intimidated by the transport truck demonstration, now into its third full day, and indicated the Liberals have no plans to engage with the demonstrators.“Over the past few days, Canadians were shocked and frankly, disgusted by the behavior displayed by some people protesting in our nation's capital,” Trudeau said during a national address from the National Capital Region.Gridlock in downtown Ottawa as trucker protest now 'scaled down' 'We are not intimidated,' PM says as MPs return to the Hill despite ongoing trucker protest.Ottawa homeless shelter staff harassed by convoy protesters demanding food.Top Canadian defence officials condemn protesters dancing on Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.Ottawa mayor calls out rotesters who placed upside-down Canadian flag on Terry Fox statue-Second day of protests seize Ottawa, police investigating 'desecration' incidents-Truck protest shuts down access to key Canada-U.S. border crossing in Alberta-Timeline: Trucker convoy protest in Ottawa 'Freedom convoy' rally hits Parliament Hill, demanding end to vaccine mandates-Trudeau concerned trucker convoy converging on Parliament Hill could turn violent-Heavy police presence as truckers arrive in downtown Ottawa-Donald Trump voices support for truckers convoy protest in Ottawa-What does the trucker convoy hope to accomplish? We won't give in to those who fly racist flags. We won't cave to those who engage in vandalism or dishonor the memory of our veterans,” he said, referencing some of what’s transpired over the last few days.“There is no place in our country for threats, violence, or hatred, so to those responsible for this behavior: it needs to stop,” Trudeau said. The prime minister’s comments didn’t go over favorably with the Conservatives— some of whom took part in the protest—saying that the truckers who have seized national attention and are still outside honking their horns, deserve to be listened to.“Contrary to some, there are thousands of passionate, patriotic, and peaceful Canadians on the Hill right now who just want to be heard. Will the prime minister extend and olive branch? And will he listen?,” asked Deputy Conservative Leader Candice Bergen in the House, after meeting with truckers Sunday night.Protesters have spent the weekend calling for the removal of COVID-19 vaccine mandates and other restrictions. Many participants have expressed outrage at the prime minster and a desire to see him removed from office. Amid the protests signs and flags with Nazi imagery, the Confederate flag, yellow stars, as well as patches or clothing that belong to groups with extremist views have been seen. While the protest has largely been non-violent, Ottawa Police said Sunday that they have seen “multiple cases of disruptive, inappropriate and threatening behaviour from demonstrators.” Police are also conducting “several” criminal investigations in relation to acts described by police as “desecration” of the National War Memorial, the Tomb of the Unknown Solider, and a monument to Terry Fox.Monday evening, Ottawa Police Chief Peter Sloly said that the demonstration has “scaled down” over the last 12 hours, after the city was inundated by “tens of thousands of individuals from a wide variety of causes” who have actively protested in some form for 24 hours straight since arriving on Friday.

AND NOW THE SO CALLED P.CS ARE TRYING TO GET RID THEIR LEADER O'TOOLE FOR STICKING UP FOR THE TRUCKERS.
Trudeau took part virtually given he tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday, but off the top faced a series of questions from Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole.

Just WOW! Blackface Justin Trudeau Accuses Canadian Truckers of “Racism” Accuses them of Using “Nazi Symbolism”By Jim Hoft-Published January 31, 2022 at 2:00pm

Blackface Justin Trudeau lashed out at Canadian truckers today calling them racists and accusing them of using Nazi symbolism. “I know you are wondering about what you saw in our capital city this weekend. Freedom of expression, assembly, and association are cornerstones of democracy, but Nazi symbolism, racist imagery and desecration of war memorials, are not” Justin Trudeaupic.twitter.com/NlSLACDNVM  — Darren (D.o.P) 🇬🇧 (@JannerDarren) January 31, 2022-Talk about gaslighting! Justin Trudeau is famous for running around in racist blackface. Not just once… Several times. Not just twice…This guy is the poster boy for narcissistic elitism. Trudeau showed his own racist and misogynistic colours today. The truth is, he doesn’t care what colour or what culture the truckers are from (he knows they’re diverse). He is simply at war with his own people. That’s the part he doesn’t say out loud. pic.twitter.com/vgCJ3b7jcF — Traditional Canadian Girl 🇨🇦 (@canadiangirls99) January 31, 2022.

Florona, Deltacron, Omicron BA.2, NeoCov: Explained-In the recent few days, words like Florona, Deltacron have become a part of the Covid terminology, as scientists are engaged in tracking newer variants of SARS-CoV-2. However, Florona and Deltacron are not real variants. While Florona is a combination of flu and coronavirus, Deltacron, a combination of Delta and Omicron, never existed and might be a result of contamination. Omicron BA.2 is a sub-strain of Omicron, the variant which is driving the present surge of the pandemic.Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta and Omicron are the variants of concern as classified by the WHO.NeoCov is not SARS-CoV-2; it is a separate virus.

What WHO Said On NeoCov Coronavirus, Discovered By Chinese Scientists-A team of Chinese researchers found a new kind of coronavirus, NeoCov, among bats in South Africa.WorldEdited by Abhimanyu KulkarniUpdated: January 28, 2022 10:59 pm IST

The Chinese researchers said that the NeoCov may pose a threat to humans in the future.New Delhi:The World Health Organisation on Friday said that the NeoCov coronavirus, discovered by Chinese scientists, requires further study.A team of Wuhan researchers found a new kind of coronavirus, NeoCov, among bats in South Africa. In a study, the researchers said that the virus may pose a threat to humans in the future.Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that can cause diseases ranging from the common cold to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).The WHO said that it is aware of the development, but the virus requires further study to ascertain if it poses a risk to humans."Whether the virus detected in the study will pose a risk for humans will require further study," the health body was quoted as saying by Russian news agency TASS.The organisation said that the source of 75% of infectious diseases in humans was wild animals. "Coronaviruses are often found in animals, including in bats which have been identified as a natural reservoir of many of these viruses," the global body said.It said it is working actively to tackle such emerging zoonotic viruses.WHO also thanked the Chinese researchers for sharing their research in preprint.According to the study, NeoCov can penetrate human cells in the same way as the COVID-19 virus. "NeoCov is only one mutation away from becoming dangerous for humans," the researchers said in a yet-to-be peer-reviewed study posted on the preprint repository BioRxiv. The study is yet to be peer reviewed.Comments-The virus is closely related to the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), a viral disease that was first identified in Saudi Arabia in 2012.

Trudeau forced into hiding as 50,000 anti-vax 'Freedom Convoy' truckers storm capital- | Updated: 30 January 2022, 09:43-By Sophie Barnet

Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau and his family have been forced into hiding amid security concerns as thousands of truckers protesting vaccine mandates poured into Ottowa.Up to 50,000 protesters flooded the Canadian capital on Saturday to protest vaccine mandates, masks and lockdowns, prompting police to prepare for the possibility of violence and warn residents to avoid downtown. Some anti-vaxxers - who compared vaccine mandates to fascism - parked on the grounds of the National War Memorial and danced on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.Others carried signs and flags with swastikas and some used the statue of Canadian hero Terry Fox to display an anti-vaccine statement, sparking widespread condemnation. The organisers of the protest have called for the forceful elimination of all Covid-19 restrictions and vaccine mandates and some called for the removal of Mr Trudeau. They are, in part, protesting a new rule that took effect on January 15 requiring truckers entering Canada to be fully immunised against the coronavirus. The United States has imposed the same requirement on truckers. The Canadian Trucking Alliance said a great number of the protesters have no connection to the trucking industry, adding they have a separate agenda to push. The vast majority of drivers are vaccinated.Amongst the sea of protesters were expletive-laden signs targeting Mr Trudeau, who has been moved to a secret location. His office said it will not comment on his whereabouts for security reasons. The prime minister's itinerary for the day usually says he is in Ottawa if he is at home, but on Saturday it said "National Capital Region". One of Mr Trudeau's children has Covid-19 and the prime minister has been isolating and working remotely.Politicians have also been advised to lock their doors amid reports their private homes may be targeted. The statue of Fox, a national hero who lost a leg to bone cancer as a youngster, then set off in 1980 on a fundraising trek across Canada, was draped with an upside down Canadian flag with a sign that said "mandate freedom".The Ottawa freedom protest begins. pic.twitter. com/ Hu2dAruaj — Aaron Ginn (@aginnt) January 29, 2022-Mr Trudeau retweeted a statement from The Terry Fox Foundation that said "Terry believed in science and gave his life to help others".Meanwhile, Canada's Defence Staff chief General Wayne Eyre said those involved in the demonstration "should hang their heads in shame", tweeting: "I am sickened to see protesters dance on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and desecrate the National War Memorial. Generations of Canadians have fought and died for our rights, including free speech, but not this. Those involved should hang their heads in shame."Eric Simmons, from Oshawa, Ontario, told the Associated Press that all vaccine mandates should be ended. He said: "They're not effective, they're not working. It's not changing anything. We can't keep living like this. People are losing their jobs because they don't want to get the vaccine".Mr Trudeau has said Canadians are not represented by this "very troubling, small but very vocal minority of Canadians who are lashing out at science, at government, at society, at mandates and public health advice''.Some opposition Canadian Conservative politicians served coffee to the protesters, with Conservative party leader Erin O'Toole meeting with some truckers. The protest has also attracted support from former US President Donald Trump and some Fox News personalities.Mr Trump told a rally in Conroe, Texas: "We want those great Canadian truckers to know that we are with them all the way. They are doing more to defend American freedom than our leaders by far."Former US Ambassador to Canada Bruce Heyman said the threat against democracy is not only happening in America."Both the use of the swastika and the confederate flag are symbols of hate. So very sad to see these symbols anywhere and especially in Canada," Mr Heyman said, who was the US envoy under former President Barack Obama.

CANADA | News-'So many angry people': Experts say online conversation around trucker convoy veering into dangerous territory-Ben Cousins-CTVNews.ca Writer-Published updated Friday, January 28, 2022 3:37PM EST

As a growing group of truckers and supporters make their way to Ottawa in a protest against vaccine mandates, experts say the rhetoric online concerning the convoy is getting increasingly worrisome. The group of truckers and concerned citizens began a cross-country trip to Ottawa over the weekend, in protest of vaccine mandates in the country. The group expects to arrive in Ottawa this Saturday. The movement has since gathered steam nationwide, as videos show highway gatherings in support of the truckers, but some experts worry the online conversation surrounding the convoy has veered into dangerous territory.“There are people who genuinely believe that this is overreach by the federal government, but there are also a lot of other groups that are involved and individuals who are involved who have a long history of very overheated rhetoric,” Kurt Phillips, founder and former lead writer for Anti-Racist Canada, told CTVNews.ca in a recent phone interview.Organizers for the convoy insist they are abiding the laws and intend for a peaceful rally in Ottawa this weekend.Even though the organizers say it will be peaceful, Phillips said he’s seen people online calling the trucker convoy Canada’s version of the U.S. Capitol insurrection on Jan. 6, 2021, for the truckers to ram their trucks into Parliament, and people encouraging the hanging of politicians.“Some of the organizers are trying to get people to dial back the rhetoric, but the genie's already out of the bottle,” he said. “People are energized in an incredible way right now, and it's hard to see something not happening. I don't know if it would be on the scale of Jan. 6 in the United States, but there are so many angry people.”Peter Smith, a journalist working with the Canadian Anti-Hate Network, said he’s seeing a lot of similarities between this latest convoy and a similar truck convoy from 2019 that was meant to protest federal pipeline policies.“Right from the start, the largest groups … have been organized and managed by people who have connections to those types of groups like the Yellow Vests, the separatist Western movements,” he said. “So right from the start, this began as part of fringe politics.”Smith said he’s seen people using the movement to accuse politicians of pedophilia and to accuse the government of being illegitimate.“This has become the focus of the far right,” Smith said. “It's not to say that there's not people involved who have a ‘heart-in-the-right-place’ mentality, but this has become -- like the health restrictions -- an important opportunity to capitalize on people's justifiable discontent with the government.”“Whatever happens in this movement, this protest will be a propaganda tool that's probably used for years.”The rhetoric has also engulfed some politicians. Former Conservative leader Andrew Scheer called Prime Minister Justin Trudeau the “biggest threat to freedom in Canada,” while Pierre Poilievre, Conservative MP in the Ottawa region, recently called the truckers vaccine mandate a “vaccine vendetta.” People’s Party of Canada Leader Maxime Bernier called Canada’s COVID-19 measures “fascist” and “authoritarian.”The convoy has even gathered the attention of Donald Trump Jr.“When we push back against the insanity, we can win, and that’s how all this ends,” he said in a Facebook video.“This is a genius idea. We need to see more of this in the U.S.”Smith said that while the language used by some politicians is far from the most extreme comments he’s seen, it’s these comments that can lend credence to the more extreme sentiments.“The main organizers have been explicit about saying there won't be violence, but you look at some of the streams and comments made by others -- many of whom are planning to attend -- they're almost hoping for it,” he said.Phillips said a lot of people from different groups that would not normally associate with each other have banded together on this instance, in part because so much money has been raised.“They seem to be gravitating towards this for a variety of reasons, might be because of the energy that's involved in it. It might be for the grift, the chance of making a profit off of it,” he said.As of Tuesday evening, more than $4.5 million has been raised for the trucker convoy through GoFundMe, though the funds have been temporarily frozen. Both Smith and Phillips are concerned for what might happen when the truckers arrive in Ottawa this weekend.“I think the government needs to take this seriously,” Phillips said.

Study on long COVID finds hidden lung abnormalities not detected in routine tests-Initial results suggest significantly impaired air transfer from lungs to bloodstream, linked to breathlessness, indicating possible microscopic damage to respiratory system-By TOI staffJAN 30,22-Today, 6:51 pm

Researchers have discovered abnormalities in the lungs of long COVID patients who suffered from breathlessness a long time after they were infected, which could not be detected with routine tests, according to media reports. The pilot study used xenon — an odorless, colorless, tasteless and chemically non-reactive gas — to investigate possible lung damage in patients who recovered from the disease but continued to experience shortness of breath.Initial results suggested significantly impaired gas transfer from the lungs to the bloodstream even though other tests – including CT scans – came back as normal, raising the possibility that COVID causes microscopic damage to the respiratory system.Breathlessness is a symptom in the majority of long COVID patients, but it has been unclear whether this is linked to other factors such as changes in breathing patterns, tiredness, or something more fundamental. The study’s chief investigator, Fergus Gleeson, professor of radiology at the University of Oxford and consultant radiologist at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We knew from our post-hospital COVID study that xenon could detect abnormalities when the CT scan and other lung function tests are normal.“What we’ve found now is that, even though their CT scans are normal, the xenon MRI scans have detected similar abnormalities in patients with long COVID. These patients have never been in hospital and did not have an acute severe illness when they had their COVID-19 infection. Some of them have been experiencing their symptoms for a year after contracting COVID-19,” he added.“There are now important questions to answer. Such as, how many patients with long COVID will have abnormal scans, the significance of the abnormality we’ve detected, the cause of the abnormality, and its longer-term consequences.“Once we understand the mechanisms driving these symptoms, we will be better placed to develop more effective treatments.”In the study, the patients were required to lie in an MRI scanner and breathe in one liter of the gas, which was tweaked so that it could be seen by the machine.Because xenon, which is safe to inhale, behaves in a very similar way to oxygen, radiologists can observe how it moves from the lungs into the bloodstream. The scans take just a few minutes and, as they do not require radiation exposure, can be repeated over time to see changes to the lungs.Dr. Emily Fraser, a respiratory consultant who leads the Oxford Post-COVID Assessment Clinic, said: “These are interesting results and may indicate that the changes observed within the lungs of some patients with long COVID contribute to breathlessness.“However, these are early findings and further work to understand the clinical significance is key,” she cautioned.Asked what people suffering from the symptom can take from the findings, she added: “I think that the message should be that we are actively researching what is driving long COVID.”But Dr. Fraser also said people should not give up on their exercises and rehab, as these are helpful.“Xenon follows the pathway of oxygen when it is taken up by the lungs and can tell us where the abnormality lies between the airways, gas exchange membranes and capillaries in the lungs,” she said. While the full study will recruit about 400 participants, the initial pilot had 36 participants making up three groups: patients diagnosed with long COVID who have normal CT scans, people who had been hospitalized with COVID more than three months previously and were not experiencing long COVID, and a healthy control group. The findings, which have not been peer-reviewed, have been posted on the bioRxiv pre-print server.

The Hill-UN ambassador says Russia would not amass troops 'if you don't have intentions to use them-Sun, January 30, 2022, 12:04 PM

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield said on Sunday that Russia would not have amassed such a large military presence along the Ukrainian border without the intention of using it."We've seen the Russian playbook before. They are using disinformation. They're encouraging Ukrainians not to worry about an attack, but we know that the attack is possible," Thomas-Greenfield said on ABC's "This Week.""You don't amass 100,000 troops if you don't have intentions to use them," she added of the Russian troops along the border. Her remarks come as concerns about a potential Russian invasion of Ukraine mount.Last week, President Biden announced that he would send a small number of U.S. troops to the eastern Europe in the 'near term'"I'll be moving troops to Eastern Europe in the NATO countries in the near term," Biden said on Friday to reporters at Joint Base Andrews. "Not too many."While the White House seems to be preparing for the strong possibility of a Russian attack in the near future, Ukraine has disagreed that an invasion is imminent and has been critical of the U.S. State Department's decision to encourage Americans and family members of embassy officials in Ukraine to leave the country. Now, the U.N. Security Council is set to have a meeting on Monday about the issue."We're going to go in the room prepared to listen to them, but we're not going to be distracted by their propaganda,"Thomas-Greenfield also said on Sunday ahead of the meeting. "And we're going to be prepared to respond to any disinformation that they attempt to spread during this meeting.""We have made clear that we're prepared to address our concerns, Ukrainian concerns, and Russian concerns at the diplomatic table. But it cannot be done on the battlefield," the ambassador added.

NATO chief says reaching out to Russia but 'prepared for worst' by AFP Staff Writers-Brussels (AFP) Jan 26, 2022

NATO on Wednesday delivered its proposals to Russia for a diplomatic solution to tensions triggered by Moscow's military build-up near Ukraine, Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said, but remained "prepared for the worst"."We are now reaching out to Russia once again to try to pursue a path of dialogue and find a political solution," he said, after the alliance sent Moscow a written response to its security demands."But of course while we are hoping for and working for a good solution, de-escalation, we are also prepared for the worst," he said.Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko confirmed to the news agency Interfax that Moscow had received the response from NATO, which was handed to Russia's envoy in Brussels.Asked how long Russia could take to study the response, he said: "We'll read it. We'll study it. Our partners had taken nearly a month and a half to study our draft."Stoltenberg said US-led NATO was ready for a "real conversation" over Russian concerns -- but rejected a key Moscow demand to close the door on Ukraine's hope of joining."We cannot and will not compromise on the principles on which the security of our alliances and security in Europe and North America rest," he said. The alliance's proposals were handed over the same time as the United States delivered its own written response to the Kremlin.Moscow blindsided the West by publishing two draft treaties for the United States and NATO in December that would see Washington's influence rolled back in eastern Europe. The demands were made as Moscow massed some 100,000 troops on its border with Ukraine, in a move the West warns could be the prelude to a large-scale invasion.Stoltenberg laid out a raft of areas where he said NATO thought it could engage constructively with the Kremlin, including improving communications, increasing transparency around military exercises, and arms control.NATO is hoping its offer is enough to convince Moscow to hold further talks with the alliance and de-escalate the tensions on the ground.

SUPERPOWERS-Ukraine separatists urge Russia to send modern weapons-by AFP Staff Writers-Moscow (AFP) Jan 27, 2022

A Ukrainian separatist leader on Thursday urged Russia to send modern weapons to the breakaway statelets to help them defend themselves against Western-backed Kyiv forces.Denis Pushilin spoke after Russia's ruling party urged the Kremlin to start arming the separatist-held regions with tensions soaring between Moscow and the West."First and foremost, we need to counter the Bayraktars," he told pro-Kremlin spin doctor Vladimir Solovyov in an online interview, referring to Turkish-made drones.Solovyov said Russia was capable of supplying separatists with next generation weapons instead of Kalashnikov assault rifles and Soviet-era machine guns.Pushilin said: "We need to talk about the weapons you mean."Pushilin, the self-declared leader of the Donetsk People's Republic, accused Kyiv authorities of continuing to prepare for an offensive and stocking up on ammunition and fuel.On Wednesday, a senior member of United Russia, Vladimir Vasilyev, said the governing party had asked the country's leadership to start arming Ukraine's separatist-held regions. The United States and its EU allies accuse Russia of seeking to upend European stability by threatening an invasion of Ukraine, a former Soviet republic striving to join NATO and other Western institutions.Moscow denies plans to invade the country, where in addition to annexing Crimea, it has been backing separatist forces in the east since 2014. The conflict has already claimed more than 13,000 lives. The West and Kyiv accuse Moscow of fuelling an insurgency by sending weapons and troops across the border.Russia has always denied such claims, but Wednesday's statement could mark a change in Moscow's official stance. There was no immediate official reaction from the Kremlin.

US rejects Russia demand on Ukraine but talks see new life-By Shaun Tandon with Stuart Williams in Paris, Jonathan Brown in Moscow and Dmytro Gorshkov in Kyiv

Moscow (AFP) Jan 27, 2022 - A Ukrainian separatist leader on Thursday urged Russia to send modern weapons to the breakaway statelets to help them defend themselves against Western-backed Kyiv forces.Denis Pushilin spoke after Russia's ruling party urged the Kremlin to start arming the separatist-held regions with tensions soaring between Moscow and the West."First and foremost, we need to counter the Bayraktars," he told pro-Kremlin spin doctor Vladimir Solovyov in an online interview, referring to Turkish-made drones.Solovyov said Russia was capable of supplying separatists with next generation weapons instead of Kalashnikov assault rifles and Soviet-era machine guns.Pushilin said: "We need to talk about the weapons you mean."Pushilin, the self-declared leader of the Donetsk People's Republic, accused Kyiv authorities of continuing to prepare for an offensive and stocking up on ammunition and fuel.On Wednesday, a senior member of United Russia, Vladimir Vasilyev, said the governing party had asked the country's leadership to start arming Ukraine's separatist-held regions. The United States on Wednesday rejected Russia's key demand to bar Ukraine from NATO and said it believed Moscow was ready to invade but offered what it called a new "diplomatic path" out of the crisis.Secretary of State Antony Blinken said he would speak again in the coming days to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, as a separate initiative by France brought a promise by Moscow at least to keep talking to Ukraine's government. One month after Russia put forward sweeping security proposals, having sent tens of thousands of troops to Ukraine's border, the United States delivered a reply in co-ordination with NATO allies and said it was ready for any eventuality."It sets out a serious diplomatic path forward should Russia choose it," Blinken told reporters of the US response, which he said would remain confidential. He renewed an offer on "reciprocal" measures to address mutual security concerns, including reductions of missiles in Europe and transparency on military drills and Western aid to Ukraine. But he made clear that the United States would not budge on Russia's core demand that Ukraine never be allowed to join NATO, the US-backed military alliance."From our perspective, I can't be more clear -- NATO's door is open, remains open, and that is our commitment," Blinken said.Russia, which has a fraught historical relationship with Ukraine, has fueled an insurgency in the former Soviet republic's east that has killed more than 13,000 people since 2014.Russia that year also seized Crimea after the overthrow of a government in Kyiv that had resisted efforts to move closer to Europe. The United States has warned of severe and swift consequences if Russia invades, including possible personal sanctions on President Vladimir Putin, and NATO has put 8,500 troops on standby."While we are hoping for and working for a good solution -- de-escalation -- we are also prepared for the worst," NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said.In a phone call with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi, Blinken on Wednesday sought to impress upon Beijing the "global security and economic risks posed by further Russian aggression against Ukraine," according to State Department spokesman Ned Price.China's foreign ministry said in a statement after the call that Wang told Blinken Russia's "reasonable security concerns should be taken seriously and resolved."Blinken's deputy Wendy Sherman, who led a previous round of talks with Russia, said Putin seemed ready to invade despite the US warnings."I have no idea whether he's made the ultimate decision, but we certainly see every indication that he is going to use military force sometime perhaps (between) now and the middle of February," Sherman told a forum.- French-led talks -In another bid to defuse tensions, senior Russian and Ukrainian officials met for eight hours in Paris with representatives of France and Germany.Dmitry Kozak, the Kremlin deputy chief of staff, said the talks were "not simple" but that another round would take place in two weeks in Berlin.France said after the so-called Normandy Format talks that the envoys committed to a fragile July 2020 ceasefire in eastern Ukraine between government forces and pro-Moscow separatists."We need a supplementary pause. We hope that this process will have results in two weeks," Kozak said.An aide to French President Emmanuel Macron stressed that the talks had been about resolving the separatist fighting in eastern Ukraine, not the threat of a Russian invasion.France and Germany have joined the United States in warning Russia against an invasion but have been less direct about sanctions.Germany's new coalition government has sent mixed signals on whether it would sever the soon-to-open Nord Stream 2 pipeline from Russia, which will circumvent Ukraine to provide gas to Europe's largest economy.Amid warnings that tensions with the West could push Russia to squeeze supplies, Australian officials said Canberra stood ready to ship natural gas to Europe."We haven't received a formal request, but we are indicating that, of course, we are ready to support our friends," Resources Minister Keith Pitt told media in Sydney.US President Joe Biden, who spoke with European leaders by video-conference on Tuesday, said any Russian military attack on Ukraine would trigger "enormous consequences" and could even "change the world."Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, while brushing off the impact, warned that attempts to punish Putin personally would be "destructive."- Ukraine seeks way out -The United States again encouraged its citizens to leave Ukraine, warning an invasion could be imminent. But Ukraine's government, hoping to prevent panic, has played down the dangers and sought to offer ways out.Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba told reporters the Russian troops posed "a threat to Ukraine" but that the numbers deployed were "insufficient for a full-scale offensive."Andriy Yermak, an advisor to President Volodymyr Zelensky who took part in the Paris talks, wrote on Twitter that the meeting was "a strong signal of readiness for a peaceful settlement."burs-sct/ec/sw/leg/axn

US fighter jets arrive in Estonia for training-by AFP Staff Writers-Tallinn (AFP) Jan 26, 2022

Six US fighter jets arrived in Estonia on Wednesday to boost the NATO mission there, as tensions in the region rise over fears of a Russian assault on Ukraine. The F-15E jets arrived at the Amari base in northwest Estonia to take part in an exercise along with four Danish jets due to arrive in Lithuania on Thursday."The additional aircraft will work closely with the current detachments to increase our readiness, build crucial interoperability and underline the robust solidarity across the Alliance," Major General Joerg Lebert, Chief of Staff at Headquarters Allied Air Command in Germany, said in a statement. The exercise is taking place after Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas called for a greater US presence in the Baltic states in order to deter Russia.Following Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014, NATO set up a Baltic air policing mission and placed multinational battle groups in the three Baltic states and Poland. All four countries were once part of the Soviet bloc.Russia has demanded in recent weeks that forces from other NATO countries should be pulled back from the Western military alliance's eastern flank.

The Week-North Korea re-ignites tensions by testing longest-range missile since 2017-Grayson Quay, Weekend editor-Sun, January 30, 2022, 11:45 AM

North Korea launched a missile Sunday, ending a month that saw an unusually high number of weapons tests, NPR reported.According to The New York Times, "The tests enable the North to upgrade its missile forces while putting more pressure on the Biden administration to come to the table with more favorable terms, analysts said."Observers believe this latest launch to be the longest-range missile North Korea has tested since 2017.North Korea suspended nuclear and long-range ballistic missile testing in 2018, but this launch likely marks the end of that self-imposed moratorium."If it's an intermediate-range ballistic missile that they launched, it means that North Korea has come close to abandoning its moratorium," South Korean President Moon Jae-in told his National Security Council on Sunday. "North Korea must stop raising tensions and pressure and accept offers from South Korea and the United States to restart dialogue," he added.North Korea walked away from negotiations in 2019 after the Trump administration refused the authoritarian nation's demand for sanctions relief. The U.S. Indo-Pacific Command and the government of Japan joined South Korea in condemning the test. The missile was launched at 7:52 a.m. local time and did not enter the airspace of any other country.

The Hill-North Korea fires suspected ballistic missile in 7th test this month-Sat, January 29, 2022, 9:45 PM

North Korea launched a suspected ballistic missile on Sunday, according to the South Korean military, marking potentially the seventh missile test the nation has conducted so far in 2022.The missile was launched from a northern inland area, but it was unclear exactly where it landed, according to South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff, The Associated Press reported.North Korea appeared to fire two missiles just three days earlier and another two the day before that. The nation also launched a tactical guided missile, two "hypersonic missiles" and a railway-borne missile system earlier in the month.North Korea has not tested long-range intercontinental ballistic missiles or nuclear weapons since 2017. But after talks with the U.S. died out under former President Donald Trump, the nation began short-range missile testing.Last week, North Korean officials said the country was considering resuming nuclear and missile tests, citing concerns about the U.S.'s "hostile policy and military threat."Leif-Eric Easley, a professor at Ewha University in Seoul, South Korea, told the Associated Press that the shows of force could be a sign that North Korea wants recognition from other world powers."It wants to remind Washington and Seoul that trying to topple it would be too costly. By threatening stability in Asia while global resources are stretched thin elsewhere, Pyongyang is demanding the world compensate it to act like a 'responsible nuclear power,'" Easley told the news outlet. The U.S. has expressed concern about the flurry of missile launches.Secretary of State Antony Blinken has called the tests "profoundly destabilizing."And earlier in January, the U.S. sanctioned five North Koreans who the Treasury Department said were responsible for procuring goods for Pyongyang's ballistic missile program.

North Korea fires two missiles as testing blitz continues-by AFP Staff Writers-Seoul (AFP) Jan 27, 2022

North Korea fired two suspected ballistic missiles Thursday, Seoul said, its sixth weapons test this month in one of the most intense spates of launches on record that has delivered an emphatic rejection of Washington's offers for talks on its nuclear programme.Pyongyang has not fired this many missiles in a calendar month in decades, according to data compiled by the Center for Strategic and International Studies -- a Washington-based think tank. The last time they came close was in 2019, after high-profile negotiations between leader Kim Jong Un and then-United States president Donald Trump collapsed. With US talks stalled since then, Pyongyang has doubled down on Kim's pledges of military modernisation, embarking on a string of sanctions-busting launches this month, including hypersonic missiles. The sabre-rattling comes at a delicate time in the region, with Kim's sole major ally China hosting Winter Olympics next month and South Korea gearing up for a presidential election in March.Seoul's Joint Chiefs of Staff said it detected two suspected short-range ballistic missiles fired from the Hamhung city area towards the East Sea from around 8 am (2300 GMT)."The projectiles flew 190 kilometers (118 miles) at an altitude of 20km," they said.Pyongyang fired two suspected cruise missiles on Tuesday, and tested ballistic missiles on January 14 and 17. It also fired what it said were hypersonic missiles on January 5 and 11."I believe, if we include the two cruise missiles, this is now the most recorded North Korean missile launches in any month ever," analyst Ankit Panda wrote on Twitter. The barrage could be part of North Korea's regular military training, or linked to ongoing celebrations of Kim's decade in power or upcoming domestic anniversaries, he added. The country is preparing to mark the 80th anniversary of the birth of Kim's father, late leader Kim Jong Il, in February, as well as the 110th birthday of the its founding leader Kim Il Sung in April.- 'New capabilities' -North Korea is reeling economically from international sanctions and a two-year-long pandemic blockade, but has managed to develop an "impressive" array of offensive weaponry. Some of the recent tests aim "to develop new capabilities, especially for evading missile defenses," said Leif-Eric Easley, a professor at Seoul's Ewha University."Other launches are intended to demonstrate the readiness and versatility of missile forces that North Korea has already deployed.""Pyongyang is running hard in what it perceives as an arms race with Seoul," Easley added. The distances and altitude of the Thursday tests indicate the launches are part of North Korea's regular military training, said Hong Min, a senior researcher at the Korea Institute for National Unification in Seoul.Such tests are "aimed at thwarting the deployment of US-South Korea strategic maritime assets such as an aircraft fleet," he said."It also reflects Pyongyang's message to the global community that such training is part of its exercise of sovereignty and that the outside world has no business talking about it," he added.Pyongyang has repeatedly defended its weapons programs as part of the "legitimate exercise of the right to self-defence".It has not tested intercontinental ballistic missiles or nukes since 2017, but last week hinted it could restart such launches, blaming US "hostile" policy for forcing its hand. The diplomatic cost to Kim of the recent tests is minimal thanks to strong backing from Beijing, which has blocked efforts to impose new sanctions over short-range missile tests.China's ambassador to South Korea, Xing Haiming, told local radio station MBC on Wednesday that North Korea felt it was not being given sufficient credit for its four-year moratorium on long-range and nuclear testing."They feel that such measures are not taken seriously and that no answers have been given" he said, speaking in Korean..

EU to fund construction of Israel, Cyprus, Greece electricity cable link-Cypriot minister says ‘Eurasia Interconnector,’ which three countries signed off on last year, could push Mediterranean island’s use of renewable energy sources above 50% by 2030-By AP-jan 27,22-Today, 2:02 pm

NICOSIA, Cyprus — The European Union has earmarked 657 million euros ($736 million) for the construction of a 2,000-megawatt undersea electricity cable that will link the power grids of Israel, Cyprus and Greece, Cypriot Energy Minister Natasa Pilides said Thursday.Pilides said the money — from the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility, which bankrolls infrastructure projects — will enable crews to start constructing the segment of the cable that will connect Cyprus with Crete, whose total cost is estimated at roughly 1.6 billion euros ($1.8 billion). Negotiations to transfer the funds are expected to wrap up this summer.Pilides said beyond the project’s geopolitical weight, it will ensure Cyprus’ energy security, boost competitiveness in the power supply sector and help the island nation more easily transition to a green economy. With the cable’s completion, it’s expected that more investment will flow into renewable energy sources enhancing the energy mix of Greece, Cyprus and Israel. Pilides said a study shows that the cable in combination with power storage facilities could push Cyprus’ use of renewable energy sources above 50% by 2030.Pilides and her Greek and Israeli counterparts signed an agreement last October to speed up technical work on the cable dubbed the “Eurasia Interconnector.”The agreement aimed to expedite permits and approvals for feasibility studies and to help the three countries’ national electricity coordinators to cooperate on how best to move forward. The cable’s first phase is expected to be completed by 2025.The move toward an electricity cable link appears to have supplanted plans for a potential pipeline connection between the three countries to convey gas from existing and potential deposits off Cyprus and Egypt to Europe through Greece.Support for the so-called East Med pipeline project has waned amid questions over its feasibility as well as its adverse impact on the environment.Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades said last week that studies on the pipeline’s feasibility were still ongoing, but other alternatives are open to get gas to markets.Among the more likely options is to convey Cypriot gas to Egyptian processing plants where it would be liquefied for export by ship.

Following prison siege, Syria Kurds hunt down jihadists-Syrian Democratic Forces claim to retake full control of Ghwayran prison, where six-day battle with IS fighters claimed more than 200 lives-By Gihad Darwish-jan 27,22-Today, 2:00 pm

HASAKEH, Syria (AFP) — Kurdish-led forces on Thursday found dozens of jihadists holed up in a Syrian prison as they carried out mop-up operations after recapturing the facility from Islamic State group jihadists. An IS assault on the sprawling Ghwayran prison complex near the city of Hasakeh on January 20 sparked six days of fighting, in violence that claimed more than 200 lives. It was the most high-profile attack launched by the jihadists since the loss of their “caliphate” nearly three years ago.The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces said they had retaken full control of Ghwayran prison on Wednesday, ending battles that turned the largest city in northeastern Syria into a war zone. But search operations the next day found around 60-90 jihadists still holed up in one wing of the prison, the SDF said, adding that 3,500 IS inmates had so far surrendered to its forces.“Our forces have made a call for safe surrender… and in case they did not surrender, we will deal with them firmly,” it said in a statement.Hasakeh, meanwhile, entered its fourth day in lockdown with US-backed Kurdish forces blocking all entrances to the city to keep fleeing jihadists from crossing into other areas.Around 45,000 people had fled their homes in Hasakeh to escape the violence, according to the United Nations, with many taking shelter in mosques or wedding halls inside the city.‘Risked our lives’On Thursday, families gathered at a checkpoint erected at the entrance to the neighborhood of Ghwayran, pleading with security forces to let them through, according to an AFP correspondent.“We came to check on our house,” said Abu Hamza, who was waiting in the blistering cold with his five children.“But they turned us away because the situation is not good,” he added.Nearby, two women carrying plastic bags packed with bread were also hoping to gain access to the neighborhood where they said trapped civilians had been left without basic supplies for days.“People have been left without bread, without water, without anything,” one of the women told AFP.“We came, and risked our lives to buy bread for the neighborhood and we will distribute it,” she said. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Kurdish forces combing areas inside the prison were proceeding with “great caution over fears of suicide bombers or landmines laid by the IS group.”The Britain-based war monitor said 156 IS jihadists, 55 Kurdish fighters and seven civilians had been killed since the start of the assault. The Kurdish authorities have insisted no inmates escaped from the compound but the Observatory, which relies on sources on the ground, has said significant numbers got away.‘Broader crisis’Ghwayran held an estimated 3,500 IS inmates, including around 700 minors, when the initial IS attack began with explosives-laden vehicles driven by suicide bombers.“The Kurdish-led forces’ recapture of the prison ends this immediate deadly ordeal, but the broader crisis involving these prisoners is far from over,” Human Rights Watch warned on Wednesday.“The US-led coalition and others involved need to quickly ensure that all prisoners, especially the wounded, ill and children, are safe and receive food, water and medical care,” it added.Prisoners who surrendered were being transferred to safer facilities as operations in Ghwayran continued, the SDF said.Kurdish authorities say more than 50 nationalities are represented in Kurdish-run prisons holding more than 12,000 IS suspects. The Kurdish administration has long warned it does not have the capacity to hold, let alone put on trial, all the IS fighters captured in years of operations.“I think we should not have been surprised, we have been warning about this for quite some time,” UN special envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen told the Security Council Wednesday when asked about the attack. The administration’s foreign policy chief Abdulkarim Omar said it was up to the international community to put foreign jihadists on trial or repatriate them. The IS threat is “like a fireball, it gets more dangerous and complicated with time,” he told AFP on Wednesday. The self-declared IS caliphate, established in 2014, once straddled large parts of Iraq and Syria. After five years of military operations conducted by local and international forces, its last rump was eventually flushed out on the banks of the Euphrates in eastern Syria in March 2019.

Naming Raisi, ex-UN officials urge probe of Iran’s 1988 mass execution of dissidents-Former senior United Nations officials and Nobel prize winners call for investigation into killings of some 30,000 detainees, with Iranian president among alleged perpetrators-By AFP-jan 27,22-Today, 1:43 pm

LONDON — Former senior United Nations officials and Nobel prize winners on Thursday urged the UN human rights office to launch a probe into mass executions of political prisoners in Iran.An open letter made public calls for the Human Rights Council to launch an international investigation into the killings of some 30,000 detainees in 1988.It names Iran’s current President Ebrahim Raisi and the head of judiciary Gholam Hossein Mohseni Ejei among the alleged perpetrators, who “continue to enjoy impunity.”The letter says “thousands of political prisoners who refused to abandon their beliefs were executed. The victims were buried in mass graves scattered throughout the country.”The killings took place after Iran’s then-spiritual leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini declared a fatwa on prisoners who supported the People’s Mojahedin of Iran, an opposition group, which Tehran considered a terrorist organization. Those executed included Marxists and other leftists. Khomeini died in 1989.“We believe it’s long overdue for the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet to investigate the 1988 massacre,” the open letter reads.Ultra-conservative cleric Raisi was elected president of Iran in June last year, replacing Hassan Rouhani. For opposition and human rights groups, his name is linked to the 1988 executions when he was deputy prosecutor of the Revolutionary Court in Tehran.Exiled opposition groups say he was part of a commission that sent thousands of jailed opponents to their deaths within a few months.Raisi has denied involvement in the executions. In 2019, the US placed Raisi on a sanctions list citing the executions and other alleged rights abuses. The letter was organized by a London-based association of families of victims called Justice for the Victims of the 1988 Massacre in Iran.Signatories include ex-senior UN figures such as Joachim Rucker, a former president of the Human Rights Council, and Claude Heller, a former president of the Security Council.Others signing included the former president of Chile Ricardo Escobar, the former president of the European Commission Jacques Santer and the former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, as well as 18 Nobel Laureates. The National Council of Resistance of Iran, a coalition of opposition groups, last August urged police in Scotland to arrest Raisi for human rights and abuses and genocide if he attended the UN climate summit in Glasgow in November.Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have both called for his indictment for human rights violations and crimes against humanity.

Snow blankets Jerusalem, transforming city into winter wonderland-Rare covering of white delights residents as schools, kindergartens stay shut; snow may not stick around for long, though, with rain falling and temperatures set to rise-By TOI staff-JAN 27,22-Today, 11:58 am

Jerusalem residents woke up Thursday to a blanket of white after a rare storm saw around 20 centimeters of snow settle on the capital overnight, delighting adults and children alike. However, it may not last for long, with rain starting on Thursday morning set to continue into the weekend in most parts of the country, along with a slight rise in temperatures. The severe weather system, dubbed Elpis, had dropped snow on the north of the county from early Wednesday morning, with the conditions spreading steadily south throughout the day.Municipal workers worked through the night to clear roads in the city, with 250 snow plows deployed and nearly 150 tons of salt spread over roads. But schools and kindergartens remained shut on Thursday, allowing the children of the city to enjoy the snow.Israel’s central hilly region, including Jerusalem, gets snowfall once every few years, though forecasts of snow often don’t pan out. The storm also brought snow to the north, and other parts of the country saw strong winds and heavy rainfall.
