Exclusive: The federal government paid hundreds of media companies to advertise the COVID-19 vaccines while those same outlets provided positive coverage of the vaccines-Chris Pandolfo-March 03, 2022-Blaze News.

In response to a FOIA request filed by TheBlaze, HHS revealed that it purchased advertising from major news networks including ABC, CBS, and NBC, as well as cable TV news stations Fox News, CNN, and MSNBC, legacy media publications including the New York Post, the Los Angeles Times, and the Washington Post, digital media companies like BuzzFeed News and Newsmax, and hundreds of local newspapers and TV stations. These outlets were collectively responsible for publishing countless articles and video segments regarding the vaccine that were nearly uniformly positive about the vaccine in terms of both its efficacy and safety.Hundreds of news organizations were paid by the federal government to advertise for the vaccines as part of a "comprehensive media campaign," according to documents TheBlaze obtained from the Department of Health and Human Services. The Biden administration purchased ads on TV, radio, in print, and on social media to build vaccine confidence, timing this effort with the increasing availability of the vaccines. The government also relied on earned media featuring "influencers" from "communities hit hard by COVID-19" and "experts" like White House chief medical adviser Dr. Anthony Fauci and other academics to be interviewed and promote vaccination in the news.Don't miss out on content from Dave Rubin free of big tech censorship. Listen to The Rubin Report now.Though virtually all of these newsrooms produced stories covering the COVID-19 vaccines, the taxpayer dollars flowing to their companies were not disclosed to audiences in news reports, since common practice dictates that editorial teams operate independently of media advertising departments and news teams felt no need to make the disclosure, as some publications reached for comment explained. The Biden administration engaged in a massive campaign to educate the public and promote vaccination as the best way to prevent serious illness or death from COVID-19.Congress appropriated $1 billion in fiscal year 2021 for the secretary of health to spend on activities to "strengthen vaccine confidence in the United States." Federal law authorizes HHS to act through the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other agencies to award contracts to public and private entities to "carry out a national, evidence-based campaign to increase awareness and knowledge of the safety and effectiveness of vaccines for the prevention and control of diseases, combat misinformation about vaccines, and disseminate scientific and evidence-based vaccine-related information, with the goal of increasing rates of vaccination across all ages ... to reduce and eliminate vaccine-preventable diseases."Anyone who has spent time reading the news, watching TV news coverage, or browsing social media in the past year has more than likely been exposed to the government's advertising. HHS ads posted to YouTube have been viewed millions of times and commercials featuring celebrities like singer Sir Elton John and actor Sir Michael Caine have been the subject of news coverage, such as this feature from NBC News:"Fear-based vaccine ads" from HHS featuring "survivor" stories from coronavirus patients who were hospitalized in intensive care units were covered by CNN and discussed on ABC's "The View" when they were unveiled last October.Though the federal government was paying each of these companies and others for pro-vaccine advertising while news reports covered the same vaccines, many editorial boards say they have firewall policies that prevent advertisers from influencing news coverage."Advertisers pay for space to share their messages, as was the case here, and those ads are clearly labeled as such," explained Shani George, vice president of communications for the Washington Post, in a statement. "The newsroom is completely independent from the advertising department," she said.A spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Times gave a similar statement, emphasizing that the "newsroom operates independently from advertising-TheBlaze reached out to several other publications that either declined to comment or did not respond before publication. The COVID-19 Public Education Campaign by HHS also used earned media outreach — word of mouth marketing — with the goal of having "trusted messengers and influencers" speak to news organizations to "provide factual, timely information and steps people can take to protect themselves, their families, and their communities."As a result of that effort, various government officials have frequently been quoted by reporters covering the COVID-19 pandemic, offering factual information on vaccine efficacy and safety. An October article from BuzzFeed News featuring the "essential facts" about who is eligible for a COVID-19 booster shot, for example, reported pro-vaccine statements from CDC director Rochelle Walensky, FDA official Peter Marks, HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra, and University of California, San Francisco epidemiologist George Rutherford. The article stressed how studies show "boosters work" and cited FDA data that suggests getting a booster shot "can reestablish strong protection against the virus." BuzzFeed News advised everyone age 65 or older, people with health conditions that put them at high risk of severe illness from COVID-19, those like healthcare workers who are at risk from coming into contact with COVID-19 positive people for work, and anyone in areas with high virus transmission to get vaccine boosters, in accordance with guidance from the CDC.Other publications, such as the Los Angeles Times, featured advice from experts on how readers could convince vaccine-hesitant people in their lives to change their minds. The Washington Post covered "the pro-vaccine messages people want to hear." Newsmax has reported how the vaccines have "been demonstrated to be safe and effective" and "encouraged citizens, especially those at risk, to get immunized."HHS did not immediately respond when asked if the agency used taxpayer dollars to pay for people to be interviewed, or for a PR firm to place them in interviews with news outlets.Since the COVID-19 vaccines manufactured by Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson were given emergency approval for use in the United States last year, more than 215 million Americans have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. An estimated 94.6 million people have also received at least one booster dose. About 65% of the U.S. population has now been fully vaccinated against COVID-19, including 75% of U.S. adults and 88.8% of seniors.HHS has not yet revealed how much advertising money was spent on each media platform. This story has been updated.

White House says COVID-19 money on 'empty' as it ties approval to Ukraine aid-The administration is requesting $32.5 billion in pandemic, Ukraine aid-By Julia Musto | Fox News

The White House is warning that the U.S. will soon begin to run out of money for COVID-19 supplies unless Congress acts to approve more funding. Officials say more money is needed for antibody treatments, preventative pills and to fund testing sites. BIDEN ADMIN SENDS MIXED MESSAGES ON ALLEGED RUSSIAN WAR CRIMES "From the COVID side, the bank account is empty," COVID-19 deputy coordinator Natalie Quillian said. "We’re in conversations with lawmakers about how to secure the funding, but it’s urgently needed." Some of the consequences could be felt later this month."This is an urgent request and this is what is at stake in our fight against COVID," White House press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters on Friday.A request sent to Congress from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) seeks $22.5 billion in immediate COVID-19 response needs with an ask for $10 billion to provide support to Ukraine following Russia's invasion. "I urge the Congress to address these critical and urgent needs as part of a comprehensive government funding bill ahead of the March 11th funding deadline," OMB acting Director Shalanda Young said in the Wednesday letter, noting that "additional needs may arise over time" due to the "rapidly evolving situation in Ukraine." The Biden administration has warned that COVID-19 testing manufacturers will start to slow production of at-home rapid tests this month – unless the federal government signs contracts to purchase more. The Health Resources and Services Administration will be forced to begin winding down claims for COVID-19 treatment for uninsured people this month in Congress doesn't provide more money. The U.S. government supply of monoclonal antibodies would run out in May. "These resources are needed promptly to immediately secure supply of highly effective oral antiviral treatments; to purchase monoclonal antibodies and pre-exposure prophylaxis; to continue operating critical testing initiatives and funding testing, treatments and vaccines for the uninsured; to initiate work on a next-generation vaccine that protects against future variants; to accelerate global vaccination efforts and provide urgent humanitarian relief abroad; and for other purposes," Young said. Should regulators make the Pfizer vaccine for children under age 5 a three-dose regimen, or if they determine kids aged 5-11 should get boosted, the administration would need more money.CONGRESS CAN TALK A LOT ABOUT UKRAINE, BUT ITS POWER TO ACT IS LIMITED-However, lawmakers have struggled to reach a spending agreement for the current fiscal year and Republicans have expressed concerns over how much money would be spent towards pandemic relief. "Oh no, that’s too much," Alabama Sen. Richard Shelby said Thursday when asked about the administration’s $22.5 billion request. "And secondly, we want to see how much money is out there" that hasn’t been spent yet from previously approved COVID-19 funding.Utah Sen. Mitt Romney and 35 other GOP senators wrote to President Biden on Tuesday saying they want a "full accounting" of how the government has spent funds already provided before supporting new money. The president signed the sweeping $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan into law last March without any support from Republicans. Now, the White House says it is open to exploring reallocating already-approved, unspent money – and potentially shifting the cost of shots and pills to insurers. But, it emphasized that the priority must be to continue to meet needs. "We are being reasonable in our urgent request now, but we know more will be needed," said Quillian.Since the pandemic's start. COVID-19 relief bills have contained $370 billion for public health programs, according to a Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) table obtained by The Associated Press, $355 billion of which is currently being spent, has been spent or has been committed to contracts. "The $22 billion for COVID is absolutely necessary; in fact, we probably will need more as we need more therapies," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said at her weekly news conference.Pelosi said she hopes Republicans will "see the wisdom of the science of what we need to do in terms of COVID," according to The New York Times. The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Kitsap Sun-COVID-19 always leaves a trace, and in children there's a risk for even more-Niran Al-Agba-Sat, March 5, 2022, 9:00 AM

The change in the appearance of a recent teenage patient surprised me. The young person had lost a considerable amount of weight since their last visit. Time was difficult to quantify ever since January, when the omicron variant of COVID-19 commandeered my office. Had it been two weeks? Maybe a month? Maybe even longer since that appointment? Reviewing the chart before entering the exam room, I realized it had been six weeks since the teen tested positive for COVID-19. It was unknown how the virus was contracted, just like many who got sick in December and January, including me. That day, the patient reported feeling fatigued, abnormally thirsty and had dropped an astounding amount of weight, nearly 18 pounds. Those symptoms meant something significant was happening; I only hoped it was not a complication of COVID-19.For the past two months, I have been seeing more and more complications related to COVID-19 infection. Some have lingering nausea, ear infections, sinusitis, strange rashes and skin infections in unusual places. Others are fatigued to the extent they are unable to attend school. Three have lost their sense of taste or smell for months back when the delta variant was predominant. Sadly, a few developed autoimmune conditions, which will be lifelong afflictions, such as thyroid gland dysfunction, neurological abnormalities, or even Type 1 diabetes, which will require injections of insulin up to four times per day for the rest of their lives.A CDC report, published Jan. 7, found that children with SARS-CoV-2 infection were up to 2.5 times more likely to be diagnosed with Type I diabetes. This condition, most often diagnosed in children and teens, occurs when the cells of the pancreas are damaged and unable to produce and release insulin, the hormone which regulates blood sugar levels in our body. Most autoimmune conditions, like Type 1 diabetes, are believed to be caused by “two hits”: a genetic predisposition coupled with a viral infection. Knowing about the increased risk after COVID-19 infection, I have been watching all four of my children like a hawk for those tell-tale signs: weight loss, thirst and fatigue. As a parent and pediatrician, I hope the risk of complications is lower after infection with COVID-19 in children who were vaccinated. But I don’t know for sure. Many parents are asking questions like this, for which I have few answers. For example: After contracting COVID-19, should my children still get vaccinated? Should they still receive a COVID-19 booster? What does the future hold for children suffering with symptoms and signs of long-COVID-19? When will the sense of taste and smell return? Will they have these autoimmune conditions for the rest of their lives? These questions are hard to answer.Unfortunately, recently-released research in children under 18 is not that encouraging. According to a large data set collected by health officials in New York State on children between the ages of 5-11, the Pfizer vaccine — the only immunization against COVID-19 approved for this age group — mitigates severe illness, but offers virtually no protection against contracting the infection. In the study, researchers analyzed data from 852,384 fully vaccinated children aged 12 to 17 years and 365,502 children aged 5 to 11 years between Dec. 13, 2021, and Jan. 31, 2022, during the height of the omicron surge. In the older age group, vaccine effectiveness against infection was only 51 percent, whereas prevention of hospitalization hovered around 73 percent. For the younger children, aged 5-11, effectiveness against infection was downright dismal, just 12 percent. The reduction in hospitalization risk was just 48 percent in the younger age group. This new data, collected during the omicron surge, has significant ramifications for parents. As a parent to four fully-vaccinated children, all of whom contracted the omicron variant, these findings are not all that surprising. But it doesn’t tell us the whole picture. The study did not evaluate the severity of disease experienced by these children. It did not explore the serious complications of COVID-19 infection in fully-vaccinated children. I am left wondering what these findings actually mean. For now, I can only share anecdotal knowledge based on my own experience. So far, every single child experiencing autoimmune complications of COVID-19 in my practice, which is now more than a dozen, has been unvaccinated. And every single affected child has been between the age of 14-18. While this suggests that vaccinated children might be less likely to experience long-term complications or develop lifelong autoimmune conditions, I do not know for sure. I hope that is true. The truth is that the vaccination is the best defense we’ve got. That teenager mentioned at the start of this column, the one who contracted COVID-19 in late December and came in with weight loss, fatigue and thirst? They now have Type 1 diabetes — and won't be the only one.Dr. Niran Al-Agba is a pediatrician in Silverdale and writes a regular column for the Kitsap Sun. Cabinet unanimously votes to shut down Haifa Bay’s oil refineries-Ministers decide to end petrochemical activities within decade, promote national projects area; environmental groups slam government for lack of timetable and budget-TOI staff-MAR 6,22-Today, 5:37 pm

The cabinet on Sunday unanimously voted to shut down the polluting Bazan Group Oil Refineries in northern Israel’s Haifa Bay and its oil storage complex in nearby Kiryat Haim.Faced with significant air pollution and above-average incidences of cancer and respiratory disease, Haifa residents, backed by environmental activists, have been campaigning for years to shut the complex down.Bazan occupies 526 acres (2,130 dunams) in Haifa Bay, close to the most heavily populated areas of northern Israel. Its refinery imports crude oil to make a range of refined products (distillates) for industry, transport and agriculture. Subsidiaries make products ranging from bitumen for road surfaces to waxes, oils, lubricants and polymers.A top-level committee of officials set up within the Prime Minister’s Office recommended last year that the complex be closed “as soon as possible, and within no more than a decade.”During Sunday’s meeting, ministers voted for the cessation of petrochemical activities within a decade. At the same time, they decided that the state will prompt large-scale infrastructure, residential and transportation projects in the area amounting to billions of shekels. The plan would allow the construction of 70,000 to 100,000 new buildings in the Haifa metropolitan area.“The government’s decision is an important step in a process that will lead to the end of the petrochemical industry in Haifa Bay, recovery of the area and its surroundings, and improvement of the quality of life and the environment in the entire region,” said Environmental Protection Minister Tamar Zandberg after the vote.“The importance of the decision is that the entire government is committed to it, and that it provides a real horizon for the residents of Haifa and the entire bay, and clearly outlines the direction and main courses of action in order to reach it.”However, environmental groups accused the government of failing to present a detailed timetable and a proper budget for the decision.“Contrary to all logic and the recommendation of the ministry directors, there is no final closing date for the bay and the cessation of refining. Instead of closing the petrochemical industry, new infrastructure is being built to store petrochemical fuels at huge budgets. This is complete madness,” said Elad Hochman, director of the environmental organization Green Course. The environmental group Homeland Guards also opposed the decision, which it claimed was politically motivated, “detached from the needs of the public and the mood in the environmental movement, devoid of initiative, entrenches the use of fossil fuels in Israel and may even expand their infrastructure.”The group added that “this is not what we hoped for, especially from a government that defines itself as the most environmentally friendly in the history of Israel.”

Says he had 'blessing and encouragement of all players' Bennett: Israel has ‘moral duty’ to mediate between Moscow, Kyiv even if chances low-PM speaks to Ukrainian counterpart for the third time since sitting down with Putin on Saturday; Zelensky publicly thanks Israel for ‘support’ without naming Bennett-By Amy Spiro-MAR 6,22-Today, 2:33 pm

Hours after returning from a surprise whirlwind trip to Moscow and Berlin, Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said Israel had a moral obligation to work to broker peace talks between Russia and Ukraine — even if the likelihood for progress was slim.“I returned from Moscow and Berlin a few hours ago,” Bennett said at the start of the weekly cabinet meeting on Sunday. “I went there to assist the dialogue between all of the sides, of course with the blessing and encouragement of all players.”Bennett said that he could not “go into greater detail” on the talks he held with Russian President Vladimir Putin or his phone calls with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The Prime Minister’s Office said Sunday morning that Bennett had spoken once again with Zelensky, the third phone call between the two leaders in less than 24 hours. Neither side has released details of any of the conversations.“We will continue to assist as needed,” Bennett said at the cabinet meeting. “Even if the chance is not great — as soon as there is even a small opening, and we have access to all sides and the capability — I see this as our moral obligation to make every effort.”“As long as the candle is burning, we must make an effort and perhaps it will yet be possible to act,” the prime minister added.Bennett took off on Saturday for Moscow to meet with Putin, becoming the first Western leader to sit down with the Russian president since he invaded Ukraine on February 24. After spending three hours with Putin, Bennett flew straight to Berlin and met with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz — just days after the pair met in Jerusalem. In a televised briefing on Sunday, Zelensky said that he is “grateful to Israel for their support for Ukraine,” according to a translation by Sky News. “We need the support of all countries and we were talking about the support we need now and how we are going to cooperate in the future after the war.”Zelensky did not mention Bennett by name, nor any Israeli mediation efforts. Last week, the Ukrainian leader told reporters that Kyiv’s relations with Jerusalem were “not bad, not bad at all,” but that he did not feel that Bennett was “wrapped in our flag.”Israel has shipped 100 tons of humanitarian aid to Ukraine and is setting up a field hospital in the country this week, but has been criticized for not sending military aid to the war-ravaged country.Speaking Sunday morning, Bennett said that “the human suffering is great and is liable to be much greater” in Ukraine. “There are also Israelis who need to return home and Jewish communities in distress that need help.”The prime minister said Israel is “prepared for a significant wave of immigration as a result of the situation” and is working on multiple fronts to meet the challenge.“At such moments, when the world is facing turmoil and Jews are no longer safe where they are, everyone is reminded how important it is that there is a home for Jews wherever they are; how important it is that we have the State of Israel,” Bennett added.Zelensky first requested that Bennett attempt to mediate talks between Moscow and Kyiv in a phone call a day after Russia invaded Ukraine, pointing to Israel’s close ties to both nations. Bennett passed on the request to Putin, who was reportedly not interested in the offer at the time.Western officials and Zelensky himself have expressed little hope in the possibility of diplomatic talks leading to a breakthrough. Two rounds of talks held in Belarus have so far produced few results.A third round of talks between Russia and Ukraine will take place Monday, according to Davyd Arakhamia, a member of the Ukrainian delegation. He gave no additional details, including where they would take place. The previous meetings held in Belarus led to a temporary ceasefire agreement to create an opportunity for the evacuation of civilians that failed Saturday and was revived Sunday.Associated Press contributed to this report.

Israel, expecting massive influx of Ukrainian refugees, struggles to form policy-Interior minister says government might need to limit entry; Education Ministry prepares to absorb schoolchildren; Diaspora minister urges cancelation of ‘inhumane’ arrival deposit-By TOI staff-MAR 6,22-Today, 4:59 pm

As the Russian invasion of Ukraine dragged through its 11th brutal day Sunday, and with the UN calling the ensuing refugee crisis the fastest-growing in Europe since World War II, Israel seemed to be struggling with its policy on absorbing fugitives from the war-stricken count.Interior Minister Ayelet Shaked signaled Sunday that Israel may move to limit the number of Ukrainian refugees allowed into the country.Speaking at a Knesset meeting on the preparations for absorbing Israeli citizens and refugees fleeing the Russian invasion, Shaked said that of the 2,034 Ukrainians who have arrived since the start of the war, around 10 percent are eligible for citizenship under the Law of Return. She estimated that at the current pace, there will be 15,000 refugees within the month.“It’s impossible to continue with an entry rate such as this. We need to set down a policy,” she was quoted as saying by the Walla news site.“Relative to its size, Israel has brought in more [Ukrainians] than any country in Europe besides those bordering Ukraine,” she posited. The UN on Sunday reported over 1.5 million Ukrainian refugees displaced since the invasion began on February 24, calling it Europe’s fastest-growing refugee crisis since World War II.The Immigration and Absorption Ministry announced Sunday that new immigrants from Ukraine will be granted a special status that enables them to receive a one-time payment from the state of around NIS 6,000 (approximately $1,800) per immigrant, or NIS 11,000 ($3,350) for a couple and around NIS 15,000 ($4,580) for a family. This is in addition to the benefits provided by the ministry over the first six months for any immigrant who arrives in Israel, which amount to approximately NIS 19,000 ($5,800) for a single person and NIS 36,000 ($10,995) for a family.Immigration and Absorption Minister Pnina Tamano-Shata said Sunday she expected tens of thousands of people to immigrate to Israel in the coming months amid the intensifying military invasion and the Russian shelling of major cities.“We are trying to offer the best possible conditions to Jews and those eligible [to immigrate] under the Law of Return. We are not [even] asking them to come with visas,” she said.“The main, massive absorption [of the immigrants] will be for the long term, and we are working on this now. I expect tens of thousands of Jews to arrive in Israel in the coming months,” she added. The Jewish Agency, which facilitates immigration to Israel, said it has already received thousands of immigration requests from Ukraine over the past week and a half, since the start of the Russian offensive, far more than they normally receive over the course of an entire year.Israeli officials have predicted a similar jump in immigration from Russia.Meanwhile, the Education Ministry said it was preparing to absorb as many as 2,000 Ukrainian schoolchildren into the education system over the coming days.Education Minister Yifat Shasha-Biton has ordered that plans be drawn up for integrating the students and their parents into the educational system and community, the ministry said in a statement.Despite the current Israeli efforts and the expected wave of Ukrainian refugees, the country’s policy has been criticized for limiting the number of non-Jewish Ukrainians allowed into the country and for creating obstacles for those who do manage to enter.Diaspora Affairs Minister Nachman Shai sent an urgent letter to Prime Minister Naftali Bennett on Sunday, requesting that Israel immediately remove the demand for a NIS 10,000 deposit which it is currently requiring from refugees arriving in the country.“Such a demand at this moment is inhumane and immoral,” the minister wrote.“It automatically restricts the entry of refugees to Israel who do not have relatives and do not have the means to meet this demand. I request that you immediately give instructions to cancel the requirement for these deposits for Ukrainian citizens arriving in Israel,” he said.Ukraine has about 43,300 people who self-identify as Jews and about 200,000 people eligible to immigrate to Israel under its Law of Return for Jews and their relatives, according to a 2020 demographic study of European Jewry.Under the Law of Return, the immediate families of those eligible to immigrate to Israel — which is anyone who has a Jewish parent or grandparent — can also receive Israeli citizenship, provided they immigrate together. Due to the unique situation in Ukraine, however, many families have been forced to travel separately. Shaked, the interior minister, instructed her office last week to ease citizenship requirements for the families of Ukrainians immigrating to Israel, but only for families of those who are Jewish according to Israel’s religious standard.

UN: 1.5 million Ukrainians in ‘fastest growing refugee crisis in Europe since WWII’ Refugee situation expected to worsen as Russian assault intensifies, particularly toward Kyiv; largest number of Ukrainians crossing border head to neighboring Poland--By Agencies-MAR 6,22-Today, 2:20 pm

The number of people fleeing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has topped 1.5 million, making it Europe’s fastest-growing refugee crisis since World War II, the United Nations said on Sunday.“More than 1.5 million refugees from Ukraine have crossed into neighboring countries in 10 days,” the UN High Commissioner for Refugees tweeted. The UN described the outflow as “the fastest-growing refugee crisis in Europe since World War II,” having reported on Saturday that nearly 1.37 million refugees had fled.UN officials said they expected the wave to intensify further as the Russian army pressed its offensive, particularly toward the capital Kyiv.Since Russia invaded on February 24, a total of 922,400 people have fled Ukraine to Poland, Polish border guards said Sunday.Hungary, Moldova, Romanian and Slovakia have also seen Ukrainian refugees arrive. The World Health Organization said meanwhile that signs of attacks on health centers in Ukraine were increasing, which it said amounts to a violation of medical neutrality and international humanitarian law.On Day 11 of Russia’s war on Ukraine, Russian troops shelled encircled cities and a pro-Russian official said safe-passage corridors would open again for residents of the besieged port city of Mariupol.Ukrainian officials confirmed that evacuations from the city would take place.Ukrainian officials said Russian artillery fire and airstrikes had prevented residents from leaving before the agreed-to evacuations got underway Saturday. Russian President Vladimir Putin accused Ukraine of sabotaging the effort.Russia has made significant advances in the south, seeking to cut off Ukraine’s access to the Sea of Avrov in the south.Capturing Mariupol could allow Russia to establish a land corridor to Crimea, which it annexed in 2014.Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukrainian forces were holding key cities in the central and southeastern part of the country, while the Russians were trying to block and keep encircled Kharkiv, Mykolaiv, Chernihiv and Sumy.

Analysis-Russian war against Ukraine in ‘world’s breadbasket’ may threaten global food supply-Millions in Europe, Africa, Asia rely on fertile farmlands in Black Sea region; price of wheat surges by 55%; violence could create food insecurity, push more people into poverty-By Joseph Wilson, Samy Magdy, Aya Batrawy and Chinedu Asadu-MAR 6,22-Today, 1:57 pm

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — The Russian tanks and missiles besieging Ukraine also are threatening the food supply and livelihoods of people in Europe, Africa and Asia who rely on the vast, fertile farmlands of the Black Sea region — known as the “breadbasket of the world.”Ukrainian farmers have been forced to neglect their fields as millions flee, fight or try to stay alive. Ports are shut down that send wheat and other food staples worldwide to be made into bread, noodles and animal feed. And there are worries Russia, another agricultural powerhouse, could have its grain exports upended by Western sanctions. While there have not yet been global disruptions to wheat supplies, prices have surged 55% since a week before the invasion amid concerns about what could happen next. If the war is prolonged, countries that rely on affordable wheat exports from Ukraine could face shortages starting in July, International Grains Council director Arnaud Petit told The Associated Press. That could create food insecurity and throw more people into poverty in places like Egypt and Lebanon, where diets are dominated by government-subsidized bread. In Europe, officials are preparing for potential shortages of products from Ukraine and increased prices for livestock feed that could mean more expensive meat and dairy if farmers are forced to pass along costs to customers.Russia and Ukraine combine for nearly a third of the world’s wheat and barley exports. Ukraine also is a major supplier of corn and the global leader in sunflower oil, used in food processing. The war could reduce food supplies just when prices are at their highest levels since 2011.A prolonged conflict would have a big impact some 1,500 miles (2,400 kilometers) away in Egypt, the world’s largest wheat importer. Millions rely on subsidized bread made from Ukrainian grains to survive, with about a third of people living in poverty.“Wars mean shortages, and shortages mean (price) hikes,” Ahmed Salah, a 47-year-old father of seven, said in Cairo. “Any hikes will be catastrophic not only for me, but for the majority of the people.”Anna Nagurney, a professor of supply chains, logistics and economics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, said, “Wheat, corn, oils, barley, flour are extremely important to food security… especially in the poorer parts of the globe.”With Ukrainian men being called on to fight, she said, “Who’s going to be doing the harvesting? Who’d be doing the transportation?” Egypt’s state procurer of wheat, which normally buys heavily from Russia and Ukraine, had to cancel two orders in less than a week: one for overpricing, the other because a lack of companies offered to sell their supplies. Sharp spikes in the cost of wheat globally could severely affect Egypt’s ability to keep bread prices at their current subsidized level.“Bread is extremely heavily subsidized in Egypt, and successive governments have found that cuts to those subsidies are the one straw that should be kept off the camel’s back at all costs,” Mirette Mabrouk, a senior fellow at the MiddleEast Institute, wrote in a recent analysis.War-ravaged Syria recently announced it would cut spending and ration staples. In nearby Lebanon, where a massive explosion at the Beirut port in 2020 destroyed the country’s main grain silos, authorities are scrambling to make up for a predicted wheat shortage, with Ukraine providing 60% of its supply. They are in talks with the US, India and Canada to find other sources for a country already in financial meltdown.Even before the war threatened to affect wheat supplies in sub-Saharan Africa, people in Kenya were demanding #lowerfoodprices on social media as inflation eroded their spending power. Now, they’re bracing for worse.African countries imported agricultural products worth $4 billion from Russia in 2020, and about 90% was wheat, said Wandile Sihlobo, chief economist for the Agricultural Business Chamber of South Africa. In Nigeria, flour millers believe a shortage of wheat supplies from Russia would affect the price of products like bread, a common food in Africa’s most populous country.“All of us need to look elsewhere” in the future, said Tope Ogun with Honeywell Flour Mills Plc, one of Nigeria’s biggest flour milling companies. “We might not get what we need to, and there is likely going to be an increase in the price.”Nigeria has taken pains to reduce its reliance on Russian grains, with farmers moving to plant more wheat fields to try to meet 70% of the country’s demand in five years, said Gambo Sale, national secretary of the Wheat Farmers Association of Nigeria.“We have the land, we have the people, we have the money, we have whatever we can need in Nigeria” to grow wheat, he said. “All we need now is time.”The disruption can be felt as far away as Indonesia, where wheat is used to make instant noodles, bread, fried foods and snacks.Ukraine was Indonesia’s second-largest wheat supplier last year, providing 26% of wheat consumed. Rising prices for noodles, in turn, would hurt lower-income people, said Kasan Muhri, who heads the trade ministry’s research division.Ukraine and Russia also combine for 75% of global sunflower oil exports, accounting for 10% of all cooking oils, IHS Markit said.Raad Hebsi, a wholesale retailer in Baghdad, said he and other Iraqis are bracing to pay more for their cooking oil.“Once the items stored are sold, we will see an increase in prices of these items,” he said. “We will likely purchase alternatives from Turkey, and Turkey will no doubt take advantage of the situation in Ukraine and raise its prices.”Farmers in the United States, the world’s leading corn exporter and a major wheat supplier, are watching to see if US wheat exports spike. In the European Union, farmers are concerned about rising costs for livestock feed.Ukraine supplies the EU with just under 60% of its corn and nearly half of a key component in the grains needed to feed livestock. Russia, which provides the EU with 40% of its natural gas needs, is similarly a major supplier of fertilizer, wheat and other staples.Spain is feeling the pinch both in sunflower oil, which supermarkets are rationing, and grains for the all-important breeding industry. Those imported grains go to feed some 55 million pigs.Jaume Bernis, a 58-year-old breeder with 1,200 swine on his farm in northeast Spain, fears the war will further increase the pain his business is facing because of climate change and drought.Since October, Spanish pork products have been taking a loss from high costs, Bernis said. Those costs are driven by China stockpiling feed for its pigs as it claws its way out of a devastating outbreak of African swine fever. In the first two days of Russia’s assault on Ukraine, the price of grain for animal feed jumped 10% on the open market in Spain.“We are facing a moment of very elevated costs, and we don’t know what lies ahead,” Bernis said. “This is another cost of waging a war in the 21st century.”

EZEKIEL 38:1-23
1 And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
2 Son of man, set thy face against Gog,(RULER) the land of Magog,(RUSSIA) the chief prince of Meshech (MOSCOW) and Tubal,(TOBOLSK) and prophesy against him,
3 And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog,(LEADER OF RUSSIA) the chief prince of Meshech(MOSCOW) and Tubal:TOBOLSK)
4 And I (GOD) will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws,(GOD FORCES THE RUSSIA-MUSLIMS TO MARCH) and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords:
5 Persia,(IRAN,IRAQ) Ethiopia, and Libya with them; all of them with shield and helmet:
6 Gomer,(GERMANY) and all his bands; the house of Togarmah (TURKEY) of the north quarters, and all his bands: and many people with thee.(AFRICAN MUSLIMS,SUDAN,TUNESIA ETC)
7 Be thou prepared, and prepare for thyself, thou, and all thy company that are assembled unto thee, and be thou a guard unto them.
8 After many days thou shalt be visited: in the latter years thou shalt come into the land that is brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people, against the mountains of Israel, which have been always waste: but it is brought forth out of the nations, and they shall dwell safely all of them.
9 Thou shalt ascend and come like a storm, thou shalt be like a cloud to cover the land, thou, and all thy bands, and many people with thee.(RUSSIA-EGYPT AND MUSLIMS)
10 Thus saith the Lord GOD; It shall also come to pass, that at the same time shall things come into thy mind, and thou shalt think an evil thought:
11 And thou shalt say,(RUSSIA-ARAB-MUSLIMS) I will go up to the land of unwalled villages;(ISRAEL) I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates,
12 To take a spoil,(OIL IS IN SPOIL) and to take a prey; to turn thine hand upon the desolate places that are now inhabited, and upon the people that are gathered out of the nations, which have gotten cattle and goods, that dwell in the midst of the land.
13  Sheba, and Dedan,(SAUDI-ARABIA) and the merchants of Tarshish,(SPAIN) with all the young lions thereof,(ENGLAND,AND ALL ITS ASSOCIATES-CANADA,AUSTRALIA-NEW ZEALAND, USA, AND WESTERN ENGLISH SPEAKING NATIONS) shall say unto thee, Art thou come to take a spoil? hast thou gathered thy company to take a prey? to carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and goods, to take a great spoil?(OIL IS IN SPOIL-I BELIEVE THATS WHY RUSSIA,ARAB/MUSLIMS MARCH TO ISRAEL)
14  Therefore, son of man, prophesy and say unto Gog, Thus saith the Lord GOD; In that day when my people of Israel dwelleth safely, shalt thou not know it?
15  And thou shalt come from thy place out of the north parts, thou, and many people with thee, all of them riding upon horses, a great company, and a mighty army:
16  And thou shalt come up against my people of Israel, as a cloud to cover the land; it shall be in the latter days, and I will bring thee against my land, that the heathen may know me, when I shall be sanctified in thee, O Gog, before their eyes.
17  Thus saith the Lord GOD; Art thou he of whom I have spoken in old time by my servants the prophets of Israel, which prophesied in those days many years that I would bring thee against them?
18  And it shall come to pass at the same time when Gog shall come against the land of Israel, saith the Lord GOD, that my fury shall come up in my face.
19  For in my jealousy and in the fire (atomic bomb) of my wrath have I spoken, Surely in that day there shall be a great shaking in the land of Israel;
20  So that the fishes of the    sea, and the fowls of the heaven, and the beasts of the field, and all creeping things that creep upon the earth, and all the men that are upon the face of the earth, shall shake at my presence, and the mountains shall be thrown down, and the steep places shall fall, and every wall shall fall to the ground.
21  And I will call for a sword against him throughout all my mountains, saith the Lord GOD: every man’s sword shall be against his brother.
22  And I will plead against him with pestilence (biological, chemical, nuclear) and with blood; and I will rain upon him, and upon his bands, and upon the many people that are with him, an overflowing rain, and great hailstones, fire, and brimstone.(NUKED,THEN MIGRATING BIRDS EAT RUSSIA/ARAB/MUSLIMS FLESH)
23  Thus will I magnify myself, and sanctify myself; and I will be known in the eyes of many nations, and they shall know that I am the LORD.

EZEKIEL 39:1-29
1 Therefore, thou son of man, prophesy against Gog,(LEADER OF RUSSIA) and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech (MOSCOW) and Tubal: (TUBOLSK)
2 And I will turn thee back,(RUSSIA-ARAB MUSLIM ISRAEL HATERS) and leave but the sixth part of thee,(5/6TH OR 300 MILLION DEAD RUSSIAN/ARAB/MUSLIMS I BELIEVE) and will cause thee to come up from the north parts,(RUSSIA) and will bring thee upon the mountains of Israel:
3 And I will smite thy bow out of thy left hand, and will cause thine arrows to fall out of thy right hand.
4 Thou shalt fall upon the mountains of Israel, thou, and all thy bands,( ARABS) and the people that is with thee: I will give thee unto the ravenous birds of every sort, and to the beasts of the field to be devoured.
5 Thou shalt fall upon the open field: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord GOD.
6 And I will send a shall come to pass in that day, that I will give unto Gog (RUSSIA/ARAB/MUSLIMS) a place there of graves in Israel, the valley of the passengers (EAST OF THE DEAD SEA IN JORDAN VALLEY) on the east of the sea: and it shall stop the noses of the passengers: and there shall they bury Gog (RUSSIAN) and all his multitude:(ARAB/MUSLIM HORDE) and they shall call it The valley of Hamongog.(BURIEL SITE OF THE 300 MILLION,RUSSIAN/ARAB/MUSLIMS)
12 And seven months shall the house of Israel be burying of them, that they may cleanse the land.(OF ISRAEL)
13 Yea, all the people of the land (OF ISRAEL) shall bury them; and it shall be to them a renown the day that I (GOD-JESUS) shall be glorified, saith the Lord GOD.
14 And they shall sever out men of continual employment,(NUCLEAR ATOMIC BOMB EXPERTS) passing through the land to bury with the passengers those that remain upon the face of the earth, to cleanse it: after the end of seven months shall they search.
15 And the passengers that pass through the land, when any seeth a man’s bone, then shall he set up a sign by it,(WON'T TOUCH IT) till the buriers have buried it (PROPERLY) in the valley of Hamongog.(RUSSIA/ARAB/MUSLIMS NEW BURIEL SITE)(EAST OF THE DEAD SEA IN THE JORDAN VALLEY)
16 And also the name of the city shall be Hamonah. Thus shall they cleanse the land.(OF THE ISRAEL-GOD HATERS)
17 And, thou son of man, thus saith the Lord GOD; Speak unto every feathered fowl,(500 MILLION MIGRATING BIRDS THREW ISRAEL EVERY SPRING,FALL) and to every beast of the field, Assemble yourselves, and come; gather yourselves on every side to my sacrifice that I do sacrifice for you, even a great sacrifice upon the mountains of Israel, that ye may eat flesh, and drink blood.(OF THE RUSSIAN/ARAB/MUSLIM ARMIES)
18 Ye shall eat the flesh of the mighty, and drink the blood of the princes of the earth, of rams, of lambs, and of goats, of bullocks, all of them fatlings of Bashan.
19 And ye (MIGRATING BIRDS IN ISRAEL) shall eat fat till ye be full, and drink blood till ye be drunken, of my sacrifice which I have sacrificed for you.(RUSSIAN/ARAB/MUSLIM ISRAEL HATERS)
20 Thus ye shall be filled at my table with horses and chariots, with mighty men, and with all men of war, saith the Lord GOD.
21 And I (GOD-JESUS) will set my glory among the heathen,(WORLD NATIONS) and all the heathen (WORLD NATIONS) shall see my judgment that I have executed,(AGAINST ISRAELS ENEMIES) and my (GODS) hand that I have laid upon them.(ISRAELS HATER ENEMIES)
22  So the house of Israel shall know that I am the LORD their God from that day and forward.
23  And the heathen shall know that the house of Israel went into captivity for their iniquity: because they trespassed against me, therefore hid I my face from them, and gave them into the hand of their enemies: so fell they all by the sword.
24  According to their uncleanness and according to their transgressions have I done unto them, and hid my face from them.
25  Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Now will I bring again the captivity of Jacob, and have mercy upon the whole house of Israel, and will be jealous for my holy name;
26  After that they have borne their shame, and all their trespasses whereby they have trespassed against me, when they dwelt safely in their land, and none made them afraid.
27  When I have brought them again from the people, and gathered them out of their enemies’ lands, and am sanctified in them in the sight of many nations;
28  Then shall they know that I am the LORD their God, which caused them to be led into captivity among the heathen: but I have gathered them unto their own land, and have left none of them any more there.
29  Neither will I hide my face any more from them: for I have poured out my spirit upon the house of Israel, saith the Lord GOD.

37  For I will cause Elam (IRAN-BUSHEHR NUKE SITE) to be dismayed before their enemies, and before them that seek their life: and I will bring evil upon them, even my fierce anger,(ISRAELS NUKES POSSIBLY) saith the LORD; and I will send the sword after them, till I have consumed them:(IRAN AND ITS NUKE SITES DESTROYED)

ISAIAH 17:1,11-14
1 The burden of Damascus. Behold, Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap.
11  In the day shalt thou make thy plant to grow, and in the morning shalt thou make thy seed to flourish: but the harvest shall be a heap in the day of grief and of desperate sorrow.
12  Woe to the multitude of many people, which make a noise like the noise of the seas; and to the rushing of nations,(USELESS U.N) that make a rushing like the rushing of mighty waters!
13  The nations shall rush like the rushing of many waters: but God shall rebuke them, and they shall flee far off, and shall be chased as the chaff of the mountains before the wind, and like a rolling thing before the whirlwind.
14  And behold at evening tide trouble; and before the morning he is not.(ASSAD KILLED IN OVERNIGHT RAID) This is the portion of them that spoil us,(ISRAEL) and the lot of them that rob us.

Russia preparing to shell port city of Odesa, Zelensky warns-Ukrainian president says Russians had always been welcome in resort city; ‘and now what? Bombs against Odesa?’By AFP-MAR 6,22-Today, 3:59 pm

KYIV, Ukraine — Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky warned Sunday that Russian forces are preparing to shell Odesa, a historic port city on the Black Sea coast.“They are preparing to bomb Odesa. Odesa!” he declared, in a video address.“Russians have always come to Odesa. They have always felt only warmth in Odesa. Only sincerity. And now what? Bombs against Odesa? Artillery against Odesa? Missiles against Odesa?” he asked.“It will be a war crime. It will be a historical crime.”Russian forces have made progress in southern Ukraine since their February 24 invasion, overrunning the city of Kherson and besieging the port of Mariupol, but Odesa has so far been largely spared.Almost a million people live in Odesa, a cosmopolitan harbor on Ukraine’s southern coast with both Ukrainian and Russian speakers and Bulgarian and Jewish minorities. The Russian advance from occupied Crimea has in part turned east to link up with Russian-backed separatists and to seize the Azov Sea port of Mariupol. But another part of the force has also headed west to Kherson, on the road towards Odesa. The city is also close to the Moldovan border and the Russian-occupied region of Transnistria.During the first 11 days of the conflict, Russian forces from Belarus have also advanced on the capital Kyiv from the northwest and northeast, while another group bombarded the northern city of Kharkiv.Several cities have been bombed and shelled and the UN estimates that more than a million and a half civilians have been driven from their homes by the fighting.

Analysis-China adopts Russia’s ‘denazification’ myth to rationalize invasion of Ukraine-Official Chinese news sites have also published baseless claims that the US trained Ukrainian neo-Nazis to destabilize Hong Kong during protests there in 2019-By Jordyn Haime-MAR 6,22-Today, 1:03 pm

TAIPEI (JTA) — Many countries have roundly rejected Russian President Vladimir Putin’s argument that his attack on Ukraine is needed to achieve the “denazification” of that country. But the argument is alive and well in Chinese state-run media.“Russian President Vladimir Putin mentioned in a televised speech a few days ago that the military operation against Ukraine is aimed at protecting the people who have suffered abuse and genocide by the Kyiv regime for eight years. For this reason, Russia will seek to demilitarize and de-Nazify Ukraine,” one article on the state-backed site Wen Wei Po read.China is in an awkward position as Russia wages its war in Ukraine: Beijing has interests in both Russia and with the West, so it has refrained from antagonizing Putin while also not openly supporting him. The New York Times reported that, behind the scenes, Chinese officials had asked Putin to delay his planned invasion until after the Beijing Olympics. Publicly, Chinese officials have said that China respects Ukraine’s territorial integrity.Last week, China was one of 35 countries to abstain from a United Nations vote to condemn Russia — placing it well outside the mainstream, but also not in the tiny minority of nations to side with Russia and oppose the resolution.Chinese media offers another clue about where the government stands on the war Putin started, and on his reasons for starting it. (Chinese news media is subject to heavy government censorship and can be understood as reflecting the official state position.)-Official Chinese news sites have published baseless claims in recent articles claiming that the United States trained Ukrainian neo-Nazis to destabilize Hong Kong during protests there in 2019.“When Russian President Vladimir Putin declared military actions against Ukraine, one of his slogans was to order ‘denazification’ of Ukraine. Soon after, in China’s cyberspace, Putin’s remarks invoked the memories of many Chinese citizens,” the state-backed site Taihai Net wrote in a Feb. 28 story.Chinese social media users have also used Russian talking points about Nazis, according to a New York Times report that said many users are “bringing up the Azov Battalion as if it represented all of Ukraine.” The ultranationalist paramilitary group has a reputation for including neo-Nazis and participating in antisemitic displays. But it numbers at most several hundred in an army of about a quarter million.Overall, the discourse seeks to rationalize the Chinese state’s behavior in Hong Kong, widely perceived internationally as an assault on democracy, while simultaneously attacking the United States, according to an analysis by the Taiwan-based Information Operations Research Group, an organization that researches Chinese influence and media manipulation in Taiwan. In 2019, Hong Kongers began protesting an extradition law that most saw as an overreach of China’s power into the region. The bill was eventually scrapped, but a 2020 national security law has since led to arrests of activists, closures of independent news outlets and a mass exodus from the region. This is not the first time that Ukraine and Nazism have entered the political discourse in China. Last year, state-backed news organizations criticized the United States and Ukraine after the two countries voted against a United Nations resolution aimed at “combating glorification of Nazism, neo-Nazism and other practices.”At the time, the United States argued that the resolution represented “thinly veiled attempts to legitimize Russian disinformation campaigns denigrating neighboring nations and promoting the distorted Soviet narrative of much of contemporary European history, using the cynical guise of halting Nazi glorification.”That disinformation campaign has kicked into high gear in recent weeks, with Putin saying repeatedly that Ukraine is run by neo-Nazis and has an army filled with them.Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky is Jewish and lost family members to the Holocaust. “How could I be a Nazi?” he asked in an appeal to Russians on the eve of the war.Invocation of the Holocaust in political propaganda isn’t new for China. State media has criticized other countries such as Lithuania — whose relationship with China has cooled since last year — by pointing to historical antisemitism and the Holocaust. The Chinese state has also compared 2019 protests in Hong Kong to the Holocaust and claimed responsibility for saving Jewish refugees in Shanghai during World War II. While the city did provide refuge to tens of thousands of Jewish refugees from Europe, it was at the time governed by several powers. The People’s Republic of China was not founded until 1949.

Russia focuses on keeping domestic support behind Putin-As Russian assault intensifies, Ukraine seems to dominate global information war-Ukrainian government fighting on military and social media fronts against Russia; videos of stiff resistance circulate online; Zelensky’s daily addresses become viral sensations-By Joris FIORITI-MAR 6,22-Today, 1:03 pm

PARIS (AFP) — Ukraine has succeeded in dominating social media in the first days since the Russian invasion, in an intensifying information war with Moscow that Kyiv so far appears to be winning, analysts say.Even as President Volodymyr Zelensky remains bunkered down in Kyiv amid heavy bombardment and the fear of assassination, his government has forced an all-out assault on social media to win supporters for their cause.Zelensky’s daily video addresses, usually published with English subtitles, have become viral sensations, while the defense and foreign ministries tout the military resistance of Ukraine in snazzy graphics.Meanwhile, Ukrainians have posted videos showing the success of their forces that have become viral trends, including a Ukrainian missile shooting down a Russian helicopter and a Ukrainian farmer towing away captured Russian military hardware on his tractor.Self-shot videos of Ukrainians sobbing amid the ruins of their towns after Russia stepped up bombardments have also gripped people around the world.More unverifiable viral claims have included the so-called “ghost of Kyiv,” a flying ace said to have downed a dozen Russian warplanes, or the Kyiv woman who purportedly knocked out a Russian drone with a jar of pickled cucumbers.People call him the Ghost of Kyiv. And rightly so — this UAF ace dominates the skies over our capital and country, and has already become a nightmare for invading Russian aircrafts. pic.twitter.com/lngfaMN01I— Ukraine / ??????? (@Ukraine) February 27, 2022 “In the first phase of the conflict, in terms of international opinion, the Ukrainians are clearly ahead in information,” said Baptiste Robert, founder of Predicta Lab, a French company fighting disinformation.“The most impressive thing is that it is organic,” he said. “There is a real desire of the Ukrainians to document this war. When something happens, they pull out their phones.”‘Readjusting and trying again’ Robert said the majority of pro-Ukraine videos doing the rounds on Twitter are genuine, but there have been claims which subsequent fact-checking proved to be exaggerated.Ukrainians march towards Russian soldiers while getting shot at. Everyone must watch this video. pic.twitter.com/gclsykDS9P— Anastasiia Lapatina (@lapatina_) March 5, 2022-In the early stages of the war, Kyiv hailed as heroes 13 border guards who it said lost their lives defending a tiny Black Sea island after swearing at the Russian forces over the radio. They had in fact all survived, as the Ukrainian authorities later acknowledged. Ukraine’s embassy in Paris denies any deliberate attempt to mislead, saying “we don’t do fake news.”Russia, accused of spreading disinformation in the 2016 US election to weigh the balance in favor of Donald Trump, is seen as a past master of such tactics. But here, the balance is weighed against Moscow. In addition to being deeply unpopular in the West, the initial phase of the war has been far from successful for the Kremlin, according to independent observers.“I can see them (the Russians) readjusting, refitting, and trying again” on the information front, said Emily Harding, deputy director and senior fellow in the international security program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.“But it will still take a little while to get things running.”She said she expected Russia to “push a lot of disinformation into the ecosystem about how the war is going, showing Ukrainian troops supposedly surrendering.”‘Many Russians buy the narrative’However, Russia does not seem hugely concerned about public opinion outside the country, with efforts focused on keeping domestic support behind President Vladimir Putin. To this end, Russia in the last days shut down the final bastions of free speech media in the country, blocked Facebook and restricted access to Twitter.“It is true that they (the Ukrainians) are winning, but at the end of the day, the audience Putin cares most about is what his own people think about him,” said Darren Linvill, lead researcher at the Media forensic lab of Clemson University in the United States.“I think many, many Russians buy the narrative.”He added: “For every narrative which is pro-Ukrainian, such as stories about Russian soldiers surrendering without fighting and Ukrainian heroes being lauded for their bravery, you see the same thing in Russia, in the conversation among nationalists, for their own side.”With Ukrainian resistance forcing Moscow into a much longer war than the Kremlin wanted, a new phase in the information war is likely to open up.If more Ukrainian cities fall to Russian forces, “there will be a new information war between those areas still resisting and the counter-information that the Russians are imposing,” said Robert.

MOSCOW, Russia — Over 1,100 people in cities across Russia have been detained at protests on Sunday against Moscow’s military operation in Ukraine, a monitor said, more than a week after the assault began.OVD-Info, which monitors detentions at opposition protests, said that by around 2:20 p.m. Moscow time (1120 GMT) on Sunday, 1,103 people had been detained across 35 cities. The highest numbers held were in the Siberian city of Novosibirsk and in Yekaterinburg in the Urals.Riot police also detained protesters who gathered in squares in the country’s largest cities of Moscow and Saint Petersburg.Memorial, Russia’s most prominent rights group, said that one of its leading activists, Oleg Orlov, was detained at Moscow’s Manezhnaya Ploshchad square as he held a placard.Russian police on Friday had warned that all attempts to hold illegal demonstrations on Sunday would be “immediately suppressed” and organizers and participants would face charges. The latest detentions brought the total number of demonstrators held to almost 10,000 since February 24, when President Vladimir Putin ordered troops into Ukraine to carry out a “special operation.”Despite the official crackdown on demonstrations, and protesters facing jail terms, there have been daily protests since then.Earlier this week, jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny urged Russians to stage daily demonstrations, saying the country should not be a “nation of frightened cowards.”Putin on Friday signed into law a bill introducing jail terms of up to 15 years for publishing “fake news” about the Russian army.Cabinet unanimously votes to shut down Haifa Bay’s oil refineries-Ministers decide to end petrochemical activities within decade, promote national projects area; environmental groups slam government for lack of timetable and budget-By TOI staff-MAR 6,22-Today, 5:37 pmThe cabinet on Sunday unanimously voted to shut down the polluting Bazan Group Oil Refineries in northern Israel’s Haifa Bay and its oil storage complex in nearby Kiryat Haim.Faced with significant air pollution and above-average incidences of cancer and respiratory disease, Haifa residents, backed by environmental activists, have been campaigning for years to shut the complex down.Bazan occupies 526 acres (2,130 dunams) in Haifa Bay, close to the most heavily populated areas of northern Israel. The plan would allow the construction of 70,000 to 100,000 new buildings in the Haifa metropolitan area.Plans for a new Bay of Innovation in the northern city of Haifa after the removal of the polluting oil refinery industry, June 29 2020. (Screenshot, Knesset Internal Affairs and Environment Committee)“The government’s decision is an important step in a process that will lead to the end of the petrochemical industry in Haifa Bay, recovery of the area and its surroundings, and improvement of the quality of life and the environment in the entire region,” said Environmental Protection Minister Tamar Zandberg after the vote.“The importance of the decision is that the entire government is committed to it, and that it provides a real horizon for the residents of Haifa and the entire bay, and clearly outlines the direction and main courses of action in order to reach it.”However, environmental groups accused the government of failing to present a detailed timetable and a proper budget for the decision.“Contrary to all logic and the recommendation of the ministry directors, there is no final closing date for the bay and the cessation of refining.

US Senator Lindsey Graham calls for Russians to assassinate Putin-Senior lawmaker calls for a Russian ‘Brutus’ or ‘a more successful Colonel Stauffenberg,’ says ‘you would be doing your country — and the world — a great service’ By AFP-MAR 4,22-Today, 9:28 am

WASHINGTON — A leading US Senator Lindsey Graham called for “somebody in Russia” to assassinate President Vladimir Putin after Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine in a televised interview Thursday evening.“How does this end? Somebody in Russia has to step up to the plate… and take this guy out,” the senator told conservative Fox News TV host Sean Hannity. He repeated the call later in a series of tweets, saying “the only people who can fix this are the Russian people.”“Is there a Brutus in Russia?” asked the senator, referring to one of Roman ruler Julius Caesar’s assassins.Graham also wondered if “a more successful Colonel Stauffenberg” existed in the Russian military, alluding to the German officer whose bomb failed to kill Adolf Hitler in 1944.“You would be doing your country — and the world — a great service,” he added. The senator, who has served in Congress for over twenty years and has at times been a close ally to former president Donald Trump, had earlier in the day introduced a resolution condemning the Russian president and his military commanders for committing “war crimes” and “crimes against humanity.”Is there a Brutus in Russia? Is there a more successful Colonel Stauffenberg in the Russian military? The only way this ends is for somebody in Russia to take this guy out.You would be doing your country – and the world – a great service.— Lindsey Graham (@LindseyGrahamSC) March 4, 2022-Ukraine says at least 350 civilians have been killed since Putin launched the invasion last week, and over 1 million have fled the country.Moscow claims it does not target civilian areas, despite widespread evidence to the contrary.

No radiation leak at Ukraine nuclear plant after Russian attack kills three-Russian forces now in control of Europe’s largest nuclear plant, but Ukrainian officials still continue to ensure its operations; shelling caused fire at training center at site-By Jim Heintz, YURAS KARMANAU and MSTYSLAV CHERNOV-MAR 4,22-Today, 1:06 pm

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainian firefighters on Friday extinguished a blaze at Europe’s biggest nuclear plant that was ignited by a Russian attack and no radiation was released, UN and Ukrainian officials said, as Russian forces pressed their campaign to cripple the country despite global condemnation. The head of the United Nations’ atomic agency said that a Russian “projectile” hit a training center at the Zaporizhzhia plant. Ukrainian officials have said Russian troops took control of the overall site, but the plant’s staff are continuing to ensure its operations. International Atomic Energy Agency Director-General Rafael Mariano Grossi sad that Russian forces were at the plant, but the Ukrainians were in control.Ukraine’s state nuclear plant operator Enerhoatom said that three Ukrainian soldiers were killed and two wounded in the attack. Grossi said two people were injured in the blaze that broke out.Ukraine’s state nuclear regulator earlier said that no changes in radiation levels have been recorded so far after the plant came under attack. Grossi later said no radioactive material was released. The attack caused worldwide concern — and evoked memories of the world’s worst nuclear disaster, at Ukraine’s Chernobyl. The shelling of the plant came as the Russian military advanced on a strategic city on the Dnieper River near where the facility is located, and gained ground in their bid to cut the country off from the sea. That move would deal a severe blow to Ukraine’s economy and could worsen an already dire humanitarian situation. With the invasion in its second week, another round of talks between Russia and Ukraine yielded a tentative agreement to set up safe corridors to evacuate citizens and deliver humanitarian aid to the country, overturned by a war that has sent more than 1 million fleeing over the border and countless others sheltering underground night after night. A handful cities are without heat and at least one is struggling to get food and water. Initial reports conflicted over whether one or two fires broke out at the plant in the city of Enerhodar. Nuclear plant spokesman Andriy Tuz told Ukrainian television overnight that shells fell directly on the facility, and set fire to reactor No. 1, which is under renovation and not operating, and to an administrative training building. On Friday morning, officials only referenced a blaze at the training building when they said that all fires at the plant were out — which Grossi also confirmed. The regional military administration reported unspecified damage to the compartment of reactor No. 1, but said it does not affect the safety of the power unit. The nuclear regulator said staff are studying the site to check for other damage.Grossi confirmed Friday that the building hit was a training center and “not part of the reactor.” He said he did not know what hit the plant but called a “projectile” from Russian forces. He said that only one reactor at the plant is operating, at about 60% capacity. The confusion itself underscored the dangers of active fighting near a nuclear power plant. It was the second time since the invasion began just over a week ago that concerns about a nuclear accident or a release of radiation materialized, following a battle at Chernobyl.A radiation sign outside the deserted town of Pripyat, some 3 kilometers (1.86 miles) from the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine, February 4, 2020. Once home to some 50,000 people whose lives were connected to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, Pripyat was hastily evacuated one day after a plant reactor exploded on April 26, 1986. (AP Photo/Efrem Lukatsky)-The regulator noted in a statement on Facebook the importance of maintaining the ability to cool nuclear fuel, saying the loss of such ability could lead to an accident even worse than 1986 Chernobyl disaster or the 2011 Fukushima meltdowns in Japan. It also noted that there is a storage facility for spent nuclear fuel at the site, though there was no sign that facility was hit by shelling.Leading nuclear authorities were worried but not panicked. The assault led to phone calls between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Joe Biden and other world leaders. The US Department of Energy activated its nuclear incident response team as a precaution. The Zaporizhzhia regional military administration said that measurements taken at 7 a.m. Friday (0500 GMT) showed radiation levels in the region “remain unchanged and do not endanger the lives and health of the population.” Nuclear officials from Sweden to China also said no radiation spikes have been reported.“The fire at the (nuclear plant) has indeed been extinguished,” Enerhodar Mayor Dmytro Orlov announced on his Telegram channel Friday morning. His office told The Associated Press that the information came from firefighters who were allowed onto the site overnight.British Prime Minister Boris Johnson called for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council in “coming hours” to raise the issue of Russia’s attack on the plant, according to a statement from his office. In an emotional speech in the middle of the night, Zelenskyy said he feared an explosion that would be “the end for everyone. The end for Europe. The evacuation of Europe.”But most experts saw nothing to indicate an impending disaster. The International Atomic Energy Agency said the fire had not affected essential equipment and that Ukraine’s nuclear regulator reported no change in radiation levels.“The real threat to Ukrainian lives continues to be the violent invasion and bombing of their country,” the American Nuclear Society said in a statement.Orlov, the mayor of Enerhodar, said Russian shelling stopped a few hours before dawn, and residents of the city of more than 50,000 who had stayed in shelters overnight could return home. The city awoke with no heat, however, because the shelling damaged the city’s heating supply, he said.Loud shots and rocket fire were heard late Thursday around the plant. Later, a livestreamed security camera linked from the homepage of the plant showed what appeared to be armored vehicles rolling into the facility’s parking lot and shining spotlights on the building where the camera was mounted. Then there were what appeared to be muzzle flashes from vehicles, followed by nearly simultaneous explosions in surrounding buildings. Smoke rose into the frame and drifted away.Russian forces seized the largest nuclear power plant in Europe after a building at the complex was set ablaze during intense fighting with Ukrainian defenders, authorities in Ukraine said https://t.co/yf18qqVh0g pic.twitter.com/AbWsoKUzGy— Reuters (@Reuters) March 4, 2022-Russian President Vladimir Putin’s forces have brought their superior firepower to bear over the past few days, launching hundreds of missiles and artillery attacks on cities and other sites around the country and making significant gains in the south. The Russians announced the capture of the southern city of Kherson, a vital Black Sea port of 280,000, and local Ukrainian officials confirmed the takeover of the government headquarters there, making it the first major city to fall since the invasion began a week ago.Troops, meanwhile, advanced on Zaporizhzhia, a strategic city near the plant of the same name. A Russian airstrike on Thursday destroyed the power plant in Okhtyrka, leaving the northeastern city without heat or electricity, the head of the region said on Telegram.“We are trying to figure out how to get people out of the city urgently because in a day the apartment buildings will turn into a cold stone trap without water, light or electricity,” Dmytro Zhyvytskyy said.Heavy fighting continued on the outskirts of another strategic port, Mariupol, on the Azov Sea. The battles have knocked out the city’s electricity, heat and water systems, as well as most phone service, officials said. Food deliveries to the city were also cut.Associated Press video from the port city showed the assault lighting up the darkening sky above deserted streets and medical teams treating civilians, including a 16-year-old boy inside a clinic who could not be saved. The child was playing soccer when he was wounded in the shelling, according to his father, who cradled the boy’s head on the gurney and cried.Ukraine’s defense minister said Friday that the flagship of its navy has been scuttled at the shipyard where it was undergoing repairs in order to keep it from being seized by Russian forces. Oleksii Reznikov said on Facebook that the commander of the frigate Hetman Sahaidachny decided to flood the ship.“It is hard to imagine a more difficult decision for a courageous soldier and crew,” Reznikov said.Overall, the outnumbered, outgunned Ukrainians have put up stiff resistance, staving off the swift victory that Russia appeared to have expected. But Russia’s seizure of the Crimean Peninsula in 2014 gives it a logistical advantage now in the country’s south, with shorter supply lines that smoothed the offensive there, said a senior US defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity.Ukrainian leaders called on the people to defend their homeland by cutting down trees, erecting barricades in the cities and attacking enemy columns from the rear. In recent days, authorities have issued weapons to civilians and taught them how to make Molotov cocktails.“Total resistance. … This is our Ukrainian trump card, and this is what we can do best in the world,” Oleksiy Arestovich, an aide to Zelenskyy, said in a video message, recalling guerrilla actions in Nazi-occupied Ukraine during World War II.At the second round of talks between Ukrainian and Russian delegations Thursday, Putin warned Ukraine that it must quickly accept the Kremlin’s demand for its “demilitarization” and declare itself neutral, renouncing its bid to join NATO.The two sides said that they tentatively agreed to allow cease-fires in areas designated safe corridors, and that they would seek to work out the necessary details quickly. A Zelenskyy adviser also said a third round of talks will be held early next week. The Pentagon set up a direct communication link to Russia’s Ministry of Defense earlier this week to avoid the possibility of a miscalculation sparking conflict between Moscow and Washington, according to a US defense official who spoke on condition of anonymity because the link had not been announced.

'Nuclear safety at plant is now guaranteed' Blaze out at Ukraine nuclear plant after Russian shelling sparks catastrophe fears-Zelensky says Russia only country to ever attack a nuclear plant, warns Putin’s ‘reckless’ actions ‘could now directly threaten the safety of all of Europe’; Calls for UN to meet-By Dmitry Zaks and Dmytro Gorshkov-MAR 4,22-Today, 9:06 am

KYIV — Russian troops attacked Europe’s largest nuclear power plant on Friday, setting part of the Ukrainian facility ablaze in an assault the country’s leader branded “nuclear terror” and said could endanger the continent. After hours of uncertainty throughout the night, local authorities reported the fire was extinguished at dawn. They had earlier reported that no immediate radiation rise was detected and “essential” equipment was unaffected. But it remained unclear what the invading forces planned next.President Volodymr Zelensky spoke with world leaders, including US President Joe Biden and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who called for a halt to fighting at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant.Johnson accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of “reckless actions” that he said “could now directly threaten the safety of all of Europe”.The British leader will seek an emergency UN Security Council meeting in the coming hours, according to a statement from his office.Images on a live feed from the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant site earlier showed blasts lighting up the night sky and sending up plumes of smoke.Zelensky angrily denounced the attack, in a video message saying: “No country other than Russia has ever fired on nuclear power units.”“This is the first time in our history. In the history of mankind. The terrorist state now resorted to nuclear terror,” he added, calling for global help.“If there is an explosion, it is the end of everything. The end of Europe. This is the evacuation of Europe. Only immediate European action can stop Russian troops.”Despite the fears, after several hours of uncertainty, Ukrainian authorities said the site had been secured.“The director of the plant said that the nuclear safety is now guaranteed,” Oleksandr Starukh, head of the military administration of the Zaporizhzhia region, said on Facebook.“According to those responsible for the plant, a training building and a laboratory were affected by the fire,” he added. And the IAEA said it had been told by Ukraine’s regulator that “there has been no change reported in radiation levels” at the site.“Ukraine tells IAEA that fire at site of Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant has not affected ‘essential’ equipment, with plant personnel taking mitigatory actions,” the watchdog added in a tweet.US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm also tweeted that “the plant’s reactors are protected by robust containment structures and reactors are being safely shut down”.Give me planes-Russia has intensified strikes across the country during the nine days of conflict, with fresh reports of civilian casualties and devastating damage, particularly in southern areas near the first city to fall to Moscow’s troops. In a second round of talks held Thursday, Moscow agreed to a Ukrainian request for humanitarian corridors to allow terrified residents to flee, but there was no immediate clarity on how they would work, and no sign of any move towards a ceasefire.Zelensky called for direct talks with Putin, saying they were “the only way to stop this war”. But he also urged the West to step up military assistance and “give me planes.”Much of the international community has rallied behind Ukraine since Putin invaded, making Russia a global outcast in the worlds of finance, diplomacy, sport and culture. But the offensive has continued despite punishing international sanctions, and Putin said Thursday that his invasion was going “strictly according to schedule, according to plan.”He said Russia was rooting out “neo-Nazis,” adding in televised comments that he “will never give up on (his) conviction that Russians and Ukrainians are one people”.French President Emmanuel Macron, who spoke to Putin Thursday, believes “the worst is to come,” an aide said. While a long military column appears stalled north of Ukraine’s capital Kyiv, Russian troops have already seized Kherson, a Black Sea city of 290,000 people, after a three-day siege that left it short of food and medicine.Russian troops are also pressuring the port city of Mariupol east of Kherson, which is without water or electricity in the depths of winter.“They are trying to create a blockade here, just like in Leningrad,” Mariupol mayor Vadym Boichenko said, referring to the brutal Nazi siege of Russia’s second city, now re-named Saint Petersburg. In the northern city of Chernihiv, 33 people died Thursday when Russian forces hit residential areas, including schools and a high-rise apartment block. And Ukrainian authorities said residential areas in the eastern city of Kharkiv had been “pounded all night” by indiscriminate shelling, which UN prosecutors are investigating as a possible war crime. Many Ukrainians were digging in, with volunteers in industrial hub Dnipro making sandbags and collecting bottles for Molotov cocktails. In Lviv, others organized food and supplies to send to cities under attack and produced homemade anti-tank obstacles after watching YouTube tutorials.-Maybe it’s hell-But for some, the worst had already arrived.Oleg Rubak’s wife Katia, 29, was crushed in their family home in Zhytomyr, west of Kyiv, by a Russian missile strike.“One minute I saw her going into the bedroom. A minute later there was nothing,” Rubak, 32, told AFP amid the ruins in the bitter winter chill.“I hope she’s in heaven and all is perfect for her,” he said, in tears.Gesturing at the pile of rubble, he said what remained was “not even a room, it’s… maybe it’s hell.”The conflict has already produced more than one million refugees who have streamed into neighboring countries to be welcomed by volunteers handing them water, food and giving them medical treatment. Both the EU and the United States said they would approve temporary protection for all refugees fleeing the war.The fear of igniting all-out war with nuclear-armed Russia has put some limits on Western support for Ukraine, though a steady supply of weaponry and intelligence continues. The main lever used to pressure Russia globally has been sanctions, which have sent the ruble into free-fall and forced the central bank to impose a 30-percent tax on sales of hard currency after a run on lenders.Putin’s invasion has pushed some eastern European countries to lean even harder West, with both Georgia and Moldova applying for EU membership on Thursday. In Russia, authorities have imposed a media blackout on the fighting and two liberal media groups said they were halting operations, in another death-knell for independent reporting in the country. On Friday, Facebook and multiple media websites were partially inaccessible in Russia, as authorities crack down on voices criticizing the war.

Bomb attack at Shiite mosque in Pakistan kills at least 45-Blast in northwestern city of Peshawar wounds some 65 others, many of them critically; gunmen opened fire on worshippers before detonating device; no claim of responsibility-By RIAZ KHAN-MAR 4,22-Today, 1:50 pm

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — A powerful bomb exploded inside a Shiite Muslim mosque in Pakistan’s northwestern city of Peshawar on Friday, killing at least 45 worshippers and wounding some 65 others, many of them critically, police said.Peshawar Police Chief Muhammed Ejaz Khan said the violence started when two armed attackers opened fire on police outside the mosque in Peshawar’s old city. One attacker and one policeman were killed in the gunfight, and another police official was wounded. The remaining attacker then ran inside the mosque and detonated a bomb.Local police official Waheed Khan said the explosion occurred as worshippers had gathered in the Kucha Risaldar mosque for Friday prayers. The death toll will likely rise as many of the wounded are in critical condition, he added.Ambulances rushed through congested narrow streets carrying the wounded to Lady Reading Hospital, where doctors worked feverishly. At least 150 worshippers were inside the mosque at the time of the explosion, witnesses said.No one immediately claimed responsibility for the blast, but both the Islamic State group and a violent Pakistani Taliban organization have carried out similar attacks in the region, located near the border with neighboring Afghanistan.Shayan Haider, a witness, had been preparing to enter the mosque when a powerful explosion threw him to the street.“I opened my eyes and there was dust and bodies everywhere,” he said.At the Lady Reading Hospital Emergency department, there was chaos as doctors struggled to move the many wounded into operating theaters. Hundreds of relatives gathered outside the emergency department, many of them wailing and beating their chests, pleading for information about their loved ones.Prime Minister Imran Khan condemned the bombing.Retired army officer Sher Ali who had been inside the mosque at the time of the explosion was injured by flying shrapnel. He made an impassioned plea to the Pakistani government for better protection of the country’s minority Shiite Muslims.“What is our sin? What have we done? Aren’t we citizens of this country?” he said from within the emergency department, his white clothes splattered with blood. In majority Sunni Muslim Pakistan, minority Shiite Muslims have come under repeated attacks. In recent months Pakistan has experienced a broad increase in violence. Dozens of military personnel have been killed in scores of attacks on army outposts along the border with Afghanistan. Much has been claimed by the Pakistani Taliban, which analysts say have been emboldened by the Afghan Taliban’s return to power last August.Pakistan has urged Afghanistan’s new rulers to hand over Pakistani Taliban insurgents who have been staging their attacks from Afghanistan. Afghanistan’s Taliban say their territory will not be used to stage attacks against anyone, but until now they have not handed over any Pakistani insurgents.
