New research has found that not only can the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 spread throughout the body to a range of organs outside the respiratory system, but it can also remain there for months after the initial infection.The US National Institutes of Health study found that the virus can “disseminate early during infection and infect cells throughout the entire body.”Organs in danger of infection include the brain, ocular tissue, muscles, skin, peripheral nerves as well as tissue in the cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, reproductive, endocrine and lymphoid systems.The study was published Saturday as a pre-print manuscript.Autopsies were performed on 44 bodies of people who died either of the virus or while infected with it, up to 230 days after they showed initial symptoms of COVID-19. The virus was found in all 44 bodies and in 79 out of 85 anatomical areas and body fluids sampled.It was found widely distributed even in people who had died of other causes and who had had mild or asymptomatic COVID-19Infections were most prominent in the respiratory system, but results showed that the virus can “disseminate early during infection and infect cells throughout the entire body, including widely throughout the brain, as well as in ocular tissue, muscles, skin, peripheral nerves and tissues in the cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, endocrine and lymphatic systems.“Our data support an early viremic phase,” the researchers wrote, referring to the presence of viruses in the blood, “which seeds the virus throughout the body following pulmonary infection.”The results may help explain cases of so-called “long COVID” in which recovered coronavirus patients continue to suffer a range of health issues long after being given a clean bill of health.The study was performed during the first year of the pandemic before vaccines were available, and so did not examine the influence of inoculation on the virus’s spread.

Canadian military leaders saw the pandemic as a unique opportunity to test out propaganda techniques on an unsuspecting public, a newly released Canadian Forces report concludes.The federal government never asked for the so-called information operations campaign, nor did cabinet authorize the initiative developed during the COVID-19 pandemic by the Canadian Joint Operations Command, then headed by Lt.-Gen. Mike Rouleau.But military commanders believed they didn’t need to get approval from higher authorities to develop and proceed with their plan, retired Maj.-Gen. Daniel Gosselin, who was brought in to investigate the scheme, concluded in his report.The propaganda plan was developed and put in place in April 2020 even though the Canadian Forces had already acknowledged that “information operations and targeting policies and doctrines are aimed at adversaries and have a limited application in a domestic concept.”A copy of the Dec. 2, 2020, Gosselin investigation, as well as other related documents, was obtained by this newspaper using the Access to Information law.The plan devised by the Canadian Joint Operations Command, also known as CJOC, relied on propaganda techniques similar to those employed during the Afghanistan war. The campaign called for “shaping” and “exploiting” information. CJOC claimed the information operations scheme was needed to head off civil disobedience by Canadians during the coronavirus pandemic and to bolster government messages about the pandemic.A separate initiative, not linked to the CJOC plan, but overseen by Canadian Forces intelligence officers, culled information from public social media accounts in Ontario. Data was also compiled on peaceful Black Lives Matter gatherings and BLM leaders. Senior military officers claimed that information was needed to ensure the success of Operation Laser, the Canadian Forces mission to help out in long-term care homes hit by COVID-19 and to aid in the distribution of vaccines in some northern communities.BLM organizers have questioned why military officials gathered information on their initiative, pointing out they followed pandemic rules and did not hold any gatherings outside LTC homes.Then chief of the defence Staff Gen. Jon Vance shut down the CJOC propaganda initiative after a number of his advisers questioned the legality and ethics behind the plan. Vance then brought in Gosselin to examine how CJOC was able to develop and launch the propaganda operation without approval.Gosselin’s investigation discovered the plan wasn’t simply the idea of “passionate” military propaganda specialists, but support for the use of such information operations was “clearly a mindset that permeated the thinking at many levels of CJOC.” Those in the command saw the pandemic as a “unique opportunity” to test out such techniques on Canadians.The views put forth by Rear Adm. Brian Santarpia, then CJOC’s chief of staff, summed up the command’s attitude, Gosselin noted in his report. “This is really a learning opportunity for all of us and a chance to start getting information operations into our (CAF-DND) routine,” the rear admiral stated.The command saw the military’s pandemic response “as an opportunity to monitor and collect public information in order to enhance awareness for better command decision making,” Gosselin determined.Gosselin also pointed out CJOC staff had a “palpable dismissive attitude” toward the advice and concerns raised by other military leaders.The directive for the propaganda plan was issued by CJOC on April 8, 2020, but it took until May 2 of that year before Vance’s order to shut it down took effect.Gosselin recommended a comprehensive review of Canadian Forces information operations policies and directives, particularly those that may impact any activities for domestic missions.There is an ongoing debate inside national defence headquarters in Ottawa about the use of information operations techniques. Some public affairs officers, intelligence specialists and senior planners want to expand the scope of such methods in Canada to allow them to better control and shape government information that the public receives. Others inside headquarters worry that such operations could lead to abuses, including having military staff intentionally mislead the Canadian public or taking measures to target opposition MPs or those who criticize government or military policy.Military propaganda training and initiatives within Canada over the last year have proved to be controversial.The Canadian Forces had to launch an investigation after a September 2020 incident when military information operations staff forged a letter from the Nova Scotia government warning about wolves on the loose in a particular region of the province. The letter was inadvertently distributed to residents, prompting panicked calls to Nova Scotia officials who were unaware the military was behind the deception. The investigation determined the reservists conducting the operation lacked formal training and policies governing the use of propaganda techniques were not well understood by the soldiers.Yet another review centred on the Canadian Forces public affairs branch and its activities. Last year, the branch launched a controversial plan that would have allowed military public affairs officers to use propaganda to change attitudes and behaviours of Canadians as well as to collect and analyze information from public social media accounts.The plan would have seen staff move from traditional government methods of communicating with the public to a more aggressive strategy of using information warfare and influence tactics on Canadians. Included among those tactics was the use of friendly defence analysts and retired generals to push military PR messages and to criticize on social media those who raised questions about military spending and accountability.The Canadian Forces also spent more than $1 million to train public affairs officers on behaviour modification techniques of the same sort used by the parent firm of Cambridge Analytica, the company implicated in a 2016 data-mining scandal to help Donald Trump’s U.S. presidential election campaign.The initiative to change military public affairs strategy was abruptly shut down in November after this newspaper revealed details about the plan. A military investigation determined what the Canadian Forces public affairs leadership was doing was “incompatible with Government of Canada Communications Policy (and the) mission and principles of Public Affairs.” None of the public affairs leadership was disciplined for their actions.Several months ago, Acting Chief of the Defence Staff Gen. Wayne Eyre and DND deputy minister Jody Thomas acknowledged in an internal document that the various propaganda initiatives had gotten out of control. “Errors conducted during domestic operations and training, and sometimes insular mindsets at various echelons, have eroded public confidence in the institution,” noted a June 9, 2021, message signed by Eyre and Thomas. “This included the conduct of IO (Information Operations) on a domestic operation without explicit CDS/DM direction or authority to do so, as well as the unsanctioned production of reports that appeared to be aimed at monitoring the activities of Canadians.”

Health Minister Nitzan Horowitz attempted to temper concerns of rocketing coronavirus morbidity rates on Monday, pushing back against Prime Minister Naftali Bennett’s prediction of tens of thousands of new cases a day.Horowitz, who has stoically maintained that Israel has the pandemic under control despite the spiking case numbers and shortages of tests, also vowed that lockdowns or other strict measures were not under consideration.“I want to calm things down,” Horowitz said at a Meretz party faction meeting in the Knesset Monday. “We understand the infection is spreading, but there’s no reason to fearmonger among the public and there’s no need to panic.”Israel is facing swiftly rising coronavirus infection numbers thought to be fueled by the fast-spreading Omicron variant. On Monday, the Health Ministry confirmed 6,562 new cases confirmed a day earlier, about double the tally from a weak earlier.On Sunday, Bennett announced a fourth vaccine shot would be made available to people at least 60 years old or medical staff, but also warned that the country needed to prepare for the possibility that new infection numbers could reach 50,000 a day.“By the weekend I estimate that we will have crossed the line of 20,000 verified cases and for the peak of the wave, it could be that we will pass 50,000 verified cases. But with no official announcement on the matter, many parents and schools were unclear on who was permitted to be in school on Monday morning after the program expired at midnight.Under the “green classroom” system, which applied to areas with low-to-medium infection rates (classified as green or yellow under the Health Ministry’s traffic light system), students who were exposed to a COVID-19 carrier could return to school once they receive a negative PCR test result, rather than requiring the entire class to quarantine for a week.While in the program, the students must undergo an antigen test every morning and produce a negative PCR result on the final day of the isolation period. MYTH: The COVID-19 vaccine can affect women’s fertility.FACT: The COVID-19 vaccine will not affect fertility. The truth is that the COVID-19 vaccine encourages the body to create copies of the spike protein found on the coronavirus’s surface. This “teaches” the body’s immune system to fight the virus that has that specific spike protein on it.Confusion arose when a false report surfaced on social media, saying that the spike protein on this coronavirus was the same as another spike protein called syncitin-1 that is involved in the growth and attachment of the placenta during pregnancy. The false report said that getting the COVID-19 vaccine would cause a woman’s body to fight this different spike protein and affect her fertility. The two spike proteins are completely different and distinct, and getting the COVID-19 vaccine will not affect the fertility of women who are seeking to become pregnant, including through in vitro fertilization methods. During the Pfizer vaccine tests, 23 women volunteers involved in the study became pregnant, and the only one who suffered a pregnancy loss had not received the actual vaccine, but a placebo.Getting COVID-19, on the other hand, can have potentially serious impact on pregnancy and the mother’s health. Pro-Trump broadcaster and conspiracy theorist Alex Jones is suing the Jan. 6 select committee to block the panel from obtaining his phone records and compelling his testimony at a deposition next month.In the suit, Jones says he intends to assert his Fifth Amendment rights against self-incrimination — confirming a statement he made on his show — and that the committee rejected his offer to provide “written responses” to their questions.The panel, he says, has asked him to appear for a deposition on Jan. 10 and has suggested it is considering offering immunity to compel his testimony. He also says he doesn’t intend to produce documents, claiming his “journalistic activity” is protected under the First Amendment.“With respect to his deposition subpoena, Jones has informed the Select Committee that he will assert his First, Fourth, and Fifth Amendment rights to decline to produce the documents requested by the Select Committee, asserting that he engaged in constitutionally protected political and journalistic activity under the First Amendment, that the Fourth Amendment guarantees him a right of privacy in his papers, and that he is entitled to due process and the right to remain silent under the Fifth Amendment,” he argues.The panel is seeking Jones’ phone records from his carrier, AT&T.Jones’ lawsuit is the latest in a flood of litigation by targets of the Jan. 6 committee seeking to prevent them from enforcing its subpoenas and obtaining phone records from private carriers. Several organizers of the Jan. 6 rally that preceded the violent attack at the Capitol have jointly sued the panel. John Eastman, the attorney who helped Trump develop plans to pressure Mike Pence to overturn the results of last year's presidential election, has sued to protect his phone records, as well. Ali Alexander, the founder of the “Stop the Steal” movement, has sued, as has Amy Harris, a freelance photographer who was working on a project about the Proud Boys.On Monday afternoon, Cleta Mitchell, a prominent conservative attorney who joined Trump's early January call with Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, sued to quash a subpoena from the Jan. 6 select committee for her private phone records, calling it an "unwarranted intrusion" on her privacy and privileged communications.Notably, Mitchell indicated she doesn't dispute the "legitimacy" of the Jan. 6 committee probe — which she pointed out was recently supported by a federal appeals court panel — but she said the subpoena itself was too broad. Mitchell said she spent months performing legal work on Trump's behalf, with a focus on Georgia, which led to a Dec. 4 lawsuit that was ultimately dismissed.Jones led hundreds of supporters on a march to the Capitol on Jan. 6. He’s not accused of any crimes related to the attack on the Capitol. One of his close associates, however, Owen Shroyer, who accompanied Jones for most of the day, is facing misdemeanor charges for breaching police lines at the Capitol.Shroyer was in court via video Monday afternoon seeking to dismiss the case against him. In an hour-long hearing, his attorney made the case to U.S. District Court Judge Timothy Kelly that the charges against Shroyer amount to “vindictive” prosecution of Shroyer for his political views. But Kelly seemed skeptical of that position, noting that prosecutors have charged hundreds of people in connection with the events at the Capitol on Jan. 6."They've been charging a heck of a lot of people," Kelly said. While more than 700 people have been charged, the vast majority of charges have been brought against those accused of entering the Capitol or battling with police. Very few, besides Shroyer, are charged only with minor offenses on Capitol grounds.Shroyer is facing a series of misdemeanor charges that he crossed police lines, refused directions to leave the restricted grounds and exacerbated the situation by chanting “1776” near the top of the steps on the Capitol’s east side.

Shroyer had previously entered a “deferred prosecution agreement” with the government for his disruption of impeachment proceedings in 2019. At the time, he stood up and shouted at the impeachment investigators during a public hearing. The agreement prohibited Shroyer from future disruptive acts on Capitol grounds.Shroyer has claimed he was with Jones during the attack and circled the Capitol looking for places Jones could use to calm the crowd and urge participants to leave. Shroyer's attorney, Norman Pattis, said video supports that claim, showing a security aide to Jones asking police officers if Jones could climb up on a pedestal to address the crowd. At one point, according to lawyers involved in the case, an officer replied: "If you can get him up there, go for it.“"We view that as condonation," Pattis said. "I’m not sure that the magistrate who authorized the arrest warrant would have signed the warrant had that comment been highlighted."However, prosecutors contend that an officer's remark amid an unfolding crisis didn't amount to permission to cross the police lines. "Even if this were permission, it’s not permission for Owen Shroyer," Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy Edwards Jr. said.Edwards insisted that prosecutors were not targeting Shroyer over his speech. "These charges target his conduct," the prosecutor said.But Pattis said that claim was absurd. "I found that shocking. There's no evidence that he did anything other than speak," the defense attorney said. "I don't think this court can ignore the speech-drenched character of this ... It is our contention that Mr. Shroyer was doing nothing other than petitioning for redress of grievances."Kelly did not rule immediately on the defense's motions to toss out the charges. He suggested at the outset that some of Pattis' claims might be useful defenses at trial, but didn't seem to be sufficient to have a judge throw out the case. However, shortly before the hearing recessed, Kelly added: "The parties have given me little more to chew on than I had thought."Jones' new lawsuit indicates that the committee offered him a chance to speak “informally” about a limited set of topics but he refused, contending that the panel “has not treated others that it has offered the same deal to fairly and with respect.”“Jones has good and substantial reason to fear that the Select Committee may cite him for contempt of Congress if he refuses to answer its questions on grounds of constitutional privilege,” his suit argues.
