Saudi account of Khashoggi killing widely
denounced — except by Trump-US president says he finds Riyadh’s
explanation that the journalist died in a brawl at the Saudi consulate
in Turkey credible, and that initial arrests were ‘a good first step’-By
Christopher Torchia, ZEYNEP BILGINSOY and Sarah El Deeb-TOI-OCT 22,18
ISTANBUL
(AP) — Turkey will “never allow a cover-up” of the killing of Saudi
journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Saudi Arabia’s consulate in Istanbul, a
senior official in Turkey’s ruling party said Saturday, reflecting
international skepticism over the Saudi account that the writer died
during a “fistfight.”The comment was one of many critical reactions to
Saudi Arabia’s announcement of the writer’s violent death, indicating
the kingdom’s efforts to defuse a scandal that has gripped the world
were falling short.US President Donald Trump, however, was an exception.
Asked whether he thought the Saudi explanation was credible, he
replied: “I do. I do.”Trump also called alleged arrests in Saudi Arabia
over the death “a good first step.”Despite widespread outrage over the
killing of the Washington Post columnist, it is unclear to what extent
the top leadership of Saudi Arabia, a key US ally and a powerful player
in a volatile region, would be held accountable for what human rights
activists describe as an extrajudicial killing by Saudi agents. The only
way to find out what happened would be through an international
investigation led by a UN-appointed panel, the editorial board of The
Washington Post said.Saudi Arabia’s “latest version asks us to believe
that Mr. Khashoggi died after becoming engaged in a ‘brawl’ with
officials who had been sent to meet him. His body, Saudi officials told
several journalists, was handed over to a ‘local collaborator’ for
disposal,” it said, while also criticizing Trump for allegedly trying to
help top Saudi leaders escape “meaningful accountability.”Saudi Arabia
said 18 Saudi suspects were in custody and intelligence officials had
been fired. But critics believe the complex scheme that led to
Khashoggi’s death could not have occurred without the knowledge of
Mohammed bin Salman, the 33-year-old crown prince whose early promises
of sweeping reform are being eclipsed by concerns that he is an
impulsive, even sinister figure. The Saudi narrative of Khashoggi’s
death, alleged to have occurred in a brawl following discussions with
visiting officials in the consulate, contrasts with Turkish
pro-government media reports that a Saudi hit squad, including an
autopsy expert, traveled to Istanbul to kill Khashoggi and dispose of
his body, which has not yet been found.“It’s not possible for the Saudi
administration to wiggle itself out of this crime if it’s confirmed,”
said Numan Kurtulmus, deputy head of Turkey’s Justice and Development
Party. He also said Turkey would share its evidence of Khashoggi’s
killing with the world and that a “conclusive result” of the
investigation is close.Another Turkish ruling party official also
criticized Saudi Arabia, saying the kingdom should have given its
explanation “before the situation reached this point.”The official,
Leyla Sahin Usta, said it would have been “more valuable” if Saudi
officials had earlier admitted that Khashoggi was killed in its
diplomatic post.German Chancellor Angela Merkel, meanwhile, called for
more clarity in the case, referring briefly on Saturday during a party
conference to Saudi Arabia and “the terrible events” surrounding
Khashoggi’s slaying on October 2, saying “still nothing has been cleared
up.”Germany has joined other nations in calling for a credible
investigation into Khashoggi’s death.Britain’s Foreign Office had said
earlier Saturday that it is considering the Saudi report confirming
Khashoggi’s death, and reiterated that those responsible must be held to
account. In a statement Saturday, the ministry said “We are considering
the Saudi report and our next steps.” It added: “As the foreign
secretary has said, this was a terrible act and those responsible must
be held to account.”Meanwhile, opposition parties Labour and the Liberal
Democrats urged Britain to take steps to suspend arms sales to the
kingdom.Amnesty International called on Saudi Arabia to “immediately
produce” the body so that independence forensic experts can conduct an
autopsy in line with international standards.Saudi Arabia initially
denied any knowledge of the disappearance of Khashoggi, who was not seen
again after entering its consulate. The overnight admission that the
writer died in the consulate came in Saudi state media more than two
weeks after Khashoggi, 59, entered the building for paperwork required
to marry his Turkish fiancée and never came out. The kingdom has
described assertions in Turkish media leaks, based on purported audio
recordings that Khashoggi was tortured, killed and dismembered inside
the consulate, as “baseless.”In firing officials close to Prince
Mohammed, Saudi Arabia stopped short of implicating the heir-apparent of
the world’s largest oil exporter. King Salman, his father, appointed
him to lead a committee that will restructure the kingdom’s intelligence
services after Khashoggi’s slaying. No major decisions in Saudi Arabia
are made outside of the ultraconservative kingdom’s ruling Al Saud
family.Khashoggi, a prominent journalist and royal court insider for
decades in Saudi Arabia, had written columns critical of Prince Mohammed
and the kingdom’s direction while living in self-imposed exile in the
US.“God have mercy on you my love Jamal, and may you rest in Paradise,”
Khashoggi’s fiancée, Hatice Cengiz, tweeted following the Saudi
announcements.UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres “stresses the need
for a prompt, thorough and transparent investigation into the
circumstances of Mr. Khashoggi’s death and full accountability for those
responsible,” spokesman Stephane Dujarric said.Standing outside the
Saudi consulate in Istanbul, the head of a media group said the
“authority that gave the orders” in the killing of Khashoggi should be
punished.Turan Kislakci, president of the Turkish Arab Media
Association, said Khashoggi was “slaughtered by bloody murderers” and
that his group wants “true justice” for its slain colleague.White House
press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the US will advocate for
justice in the Khashoggi case that is “timely, transparent and in
accordance with all due process.”Trump has called the Saudi announcement
a “good first step,” but said what happened to Khashoggi was
“unacceptable.”The Saudi announcements about Khashoggi came in
statements carried by the state-run Saudi Press Agency early
Saturday.“Preliminary investigations conducted by the Public Prosecution
showed that the suspects had traveled to Istanbul to meet with the
citizen Jamal Khashoggi as there were indications of the possibility of
his returning back to the country,” the statement read.“Discussions took
place with the citizen Jamal Khashoggi during his presence in the
consulate of the kingdom in Istanbul by the suspects (that) did not go
as required and developed in a negative way, leading to a fistfight. The
brawl led to his death and their attempt to conceal and hide what
happened.”There’s been no indication Khashoggi had any immediate plans
to return to the kingdom. The Saudi statements, which expressed regret
and promised accountability, did not identify the 18 Saudis being held
by authorities and did not explain how so many people could have been
involved in a fistfight. The kingdom at the same time announced the
firing of four top intelligence officials, including Maj. Gen. Ahmed bin
Hassan Assiri, a one-time spokesman for the Saudi military’s campaign
in Yemen who later became a confidant of Prince Mohammed.Saud Qahtani, a
powerful adviser to the prince, also was fired. Qahtani had led Saudi
efforts to isolate Qatar amid a boycott of the country by the kingdom
and three other Arab nations as part of a political dispute. On Twitter,
where Qahtani had launched vitriolic attacks against those he saw as the
kingdom’s enemies, he thanked the Saudi government for the opportunity
to serve.“I will remain a loyal servant to my country for all times,” he
wrote.
Livni: Netanyahu government is ‘preserving’ Hamas
rule in Gaza-Opposition head lashes out at PM and his government, says
it prefers to help the Palestinian terror organization stay in power-By
TOI staff-OCT 22,18
Israeli politicians from the
opposition parties took aim at Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on
Saturday, criticizing the premier and his government for their handling
of the ongoing violence along the Gaza border, their alleged failure to
respond effectively to the threat posed by arson devices flown into
Israel, and their inability to deter the terror organization Hamas,
which rules the Palestinian enclave.Opposition head Tzipi Livni, from
the Zionist Union party, accused the government of “moving from a stated
policy of defeating Hamas — which has failed — to a hidden policy of
preserving its rule.”“The government is choosing the worst option
because it is the least politically risky,” she said during a speech at a
legal convention in the southern Israeli city of Eilat, as quoted in
Hebrew media reports. “Israel is conducting indirect negotiations with
Hamas [for calm] instead of conducting direct talks with the Palestinian
Authority [led by Mahmoud Abbas].”“Hamas in a security threat, but
there is no ‘threat’ for peace [with Hamas] from the government’s point
of view,” she accused.Livni said she was in favor of regime change in
Gaza “by pragmatic actors until the full demilitarization [of the Strip]
as a collaborative international goal.”Netanyahu’s ruling Likud party
said in response to Livni’s comments that she should “be more
responsible and stop serving as the spokesperson for Abu Mazen
[Abbas].”MK Ofer Shelah, from Yair Lapid’s Yesh Atid party, also
criticized Netanyahu on Saturday, saying at a cultural event in Shoham
that the prime minister was the “only person responsible for this
defeatist policy in Gaza.”Shelah blasted leaks this week by cabinet
ministers who are pointing the finger at Israel Defense Forces Chief of
Staff Lt. Gen. Gadi Eisenkot for what they described as the army’s
overly complacent policy toward Gaza. The leaks came after a tense
meeting on Thursday by the 10-member security cabinet where several
ministers lambasted the IDF chief for allowing an Israeli “loss of
sovereignty” on the border, and what they called the military’s
insufficient action against the balloon launchers.Shelah said the leaks
demonstrated that “this security cabinet was the most irresponsible
cabinet since the founding of the state.” He also lashed out at Defense
Minister Avigdor Liberman, whom he said was “placing the responsibility
on others like he isn’t defense minister.”Since March 30, Palestinians
in the Gaza Strip have participated in a series of protests and riots
dubbed the “Great March of Return,” which have mostly involved the
burning of tires and rock-throwing along the security fence, but have
also seen shooting attacks and bombings. The protests have also seen
Palestinians sending incendiary devices attached to balloons into
Israeli territory, sparking fires that have scorched over 7,000 acres of
land and caused millions of shekels in damage. Some 155 Palestinians
have been killed and thousands more have been injured in the clashes
with IDF troops over these months, according to AP figures; Hamas, an
Islamist terror group that seeks to destroy Israel, has acknowledged
that dozens of the dead were its members. One Israeli soldier was shot
dead by a sniper on the border earlier this year.In recent weeks,
Egyptian mediators have been trying to broker a truce between Israel and
Hamas to stop the violence. On Thursday, the top-level cabinet committee
had ordered the military to step up reprisal attacks should border
violence continue, but also to take a wait-and-see approach to allow
Egyptian mediation efforts to succeed. Ministers said the IDF should
ultimately adopt a zero-tolerance policy toward rocket attacks, arson
balloons and rioting along the Israeli border, according to reports in
Hebrew-language media.Liberman had come to Eisenkot’s defense during the
meeting and afterward, slamming the criticism of the IDF chief as
“petty politics.”Livni too defended Eisenkot, lambasting the cabinet
ministers as “shameful, and our excellent chief of staff has to sit in
front of it each day. [Eisenkot is] a responsible person who’s doing the
best that can be done with irresponsible politicians,” she
charged.Speaking on Friday to Hadashot TV, Lapid called on the Israeli
government to destroy the homes of the leaders of the Hamas terrorist
movement in the Gaza Strip, declaring that the group’s top brass must
pay a price for ongoing attacks against the Jewish state.“Nobody wants
war, but even those who want a [negotiated] armistice have to understand
that if there is no real deterrence, armistice is not worth anything,”
he said. “If we go to an arrangement where Hamas thinks that it won’t
pay a heavy price for bombing Israel’s population, or for the
[incendiary] balloons, or the violations along the [Gaza security]
fence, then the armistice is worth nothing.”The tensions between Israel
and Gaza threatened to spill over into all-out war this week after a
rocket with a 20-kilogram (44-pound) warhead exploded outside a house in
the southern Israeli city of Beersheba early Wednesday morning, causing
significant damage, but no injuries as the mother inside had rushed her
children to their bomb shelter moments before.A second rocket also
landed in the sea, off the coast of the greater Tel Aviv area.In
response, the Israeli Air Force conducted strikes against some 20
targets in the Gaza Strip, including a border-crossing attack tunnel
that entered Israeli territory from the Palestinian city of Khan Younis.
France
charges three over supermarket terror attack-Four people were killed in
March when Redouane Lakdim went on a shooting spree and took hostages,
including a police officer who traded himself for a hostage-By Agencies
and TOI staff-OCT 22,18
Three people have been charged in
France on Saturday over an Islamic terrorist’s shooting rampage and
supermarket hostage-taking earlier this year.French regional media
reported that the three are suspected of providing help to assailant
Redouane Lakdim before his March attack in Carcassonne and the nearby
town of Trebes. Four people were killed, including a police officer who
traded himself for a hostage.A judicial official said Saturday that the
three were charged with criminal association with terrorists, and one
was also accused of possessing arms in connection with a terrorist
enterprise. They were among six people arrested in raids this week. The
other three were released. It was unclear why the arrests occurred so
long after the attack. In March, three people were killed in a shooting
spree and hostage siege in southern France when Lakdim carried out three
separate attacks in the medieval town of Carcassonne and nearby
Trebes. The four-hour drama began when Lakdim hijacked a car near the
town of Carcassonne, killing one person inside and wounding another. He
then went to a supermarket in Trebes, shooting and killing two people in
the market and taking hostages. He shouted “Allahu akbar!” — the Arabic
phrase for “God is great” — and said he was a “soldier of the Islamic
State.”Special police units converged on the scene, and
Lieutenant-Colonel Arnaud Beltrame was among a group of officers who
rushed inside the supermarket. He offered to take the place of a woman
being held as a final hostage by Lakdim.Unbeknownst to Lakdim, Beltrame
left his cellphone on so police outside could hear what was happening in
the store. They stormed the building when they heard gunshots,
officials said. Beltrame was fatally wounded.French President Emmanuel
Macron had attended Beltrame’s funeral and said the officer had “died a
hero” who deserved “the respect and admiration of the whole nation.”
Shortly
before death, Khashoggi said Saudi prince has ‘tribal leader’
mentality-In off record talk, journalist killed in Istanbul consulate by
regime officials said bin Salman ‘wants to enjoy fruits of first-world
modernity’ but ‘still doesn’t see the people’-By AFP-TOI-OCT 22,18
Saudi
critic Jamal Khashoggi criticized Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s
“authoritarian rule” shortly before his death, in an interview published
following confirmation he died at the kingdom’s Istanbul
consulate.Speaking off the record to a Newsweek journalist working on a
story about the Saudi leadership, he insisted he did not view himself as
“opposition” — he just wanted “a better Saudi Arabia.”“I’m not calling
for the overthrow of the regime, because I know it’s not possible and is
too risky, and there is no one to overthrow the regime,” Khashoggi
said. “I’m just calling for reform of the regime.”He described bin
Salman as “an old-fashioned tribal leader” out of touch with Saudi
Arabia’s poor.“Sometimes I feel that … he wants to enjoy the fruits of
first-world modernity and Silicon Valley and cinemas and everything, but
at the same time he wants also to rule like how his grandfather ruled
Saudi Arabia,” Khashoggi told Newsweek.“He still doesn’t see the people.
When he sees the people, that’s when the actual reform will
start.”Khashoggi also criticized bin Salman’s lack of “proper
advisers.”“He is moving toward a Saudi Arabia according to him, a Saudi
Arabia according to Mohammed bin Salman only,” said Khashoggi, who was
himself a contributor to the Washington Post newspaper.Khashoggi
described two of the prince’s aides — sports chief Turki al-Sheikh and
the since-dismissed media adviser Saud al-Qahtani — as “very
thuggish.”“People fear them. You challenge them, you might end up in
prison, and that has happened,” he said.Khashoggi was last seen on
October 2 entering his country’s consulate in Istanbul. His
disappearance had been shrouded in mystery, with Turkish officials
accusing Saudi Arabia of carrying out a state-sponsored killing and
dismembering the body.Saudi Arabia finally admitted early Saturday that
Khashoggi had died inside the consulate in what it described as a
“brawl.” The admission — after persistent claims by the Saudi
authorities that Khashoggi had left the consulate alive — came following
the threat of US sanctions. The Saudi authorities have not yet said
where his body is.In the Newsweek interview, Khashoggi, whose
disappearance tipped Saudi Arabia into one of its worst international
crises, said pushback from the international community was vital to
keeping the Saudi regime in check.“That is our only hope,” he said.
Trump
pulling US out of nuclear pact with Russia-President says Moscow has
been violating agreement prohibiting development of intermediate-range
ground-launched cruise missiles-By AP-TOI-OCT 22,18
ELKO,
Nevada — US President Donald Trump said Saturday he will pull the
United States from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty because
Russia has violated the agreement, but he provided no details on the
violations. The 1987 pact, which helps protect the security of the US and
its allies in Europe and the Far East, prohibits the United States and
Russia from possessing, producing or test-flying a ground-launched
cruise missile with a range of 300 to 3,400 miles.“Russia has violated
the agreement. They have been violating it for many years,” Trump said
after a rally in Elko, Nevada. “And we’re not going to let them violate a
nuclear agreement and go out and do weapons and we’re not allowed
to.”The agreement has constrained the US from developing new weapons,
but America will begin developing them unless Russia and China agree not
to possess or develop the weapons, Trump said. China is not currently
party to the pact.“We’ll have to develop those weapons, unless Russia
comes to us and China comes to us and they all come to us and say let’s
really get smart and let’s none of us develop those weapons, but if
Russia’s doing it and if China’s doing it, and we’re adhering to the
agreement, that’s unacceptable,” he said.National security adviser John
Bolton was headed Saturday to Russia, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia.
His first stop is Moscow to meet with senior Russian officials at a time
when Moscow-Washington relations remain frosty over the Ukrainian
crisis, the war in Syria and allegations of Russian meddling in the 2016
presidential race and upcoming US midterm elections. There was no
immediate comment from the Kremlin or the Russian Foreign Ministry on
Trump’s announcement.“We are slowly slipping back to the situation of
cold war as it was at the end of the Soviet Union, with quite similar
consequences, but now it could be worse because (Russian President
Vladimir) Putin belongs to a generation that had no war under its belt,”
said Dmitry Oreshkin, an independent Russian political analyst. “These
people aren’t as much fearful of a war as people of Brezhnev’s epoch.
They think if they threaten the West properly, it gets scared.”US
officials have previously alleged that Russia violated the treaty by
deliberately deploying a land-based cruise missile in order to pose a
threat to NATO. Russia has claimed that US missile defenses violate the
pact.In the past, the Obama administration worked to convince Moscow to
respect the INF treaty but made little progress.“If they get smart and
if others get smart and they say let’s not develop these horrible
nuclear weapons, I would be extremely happy with that, but as long as
somebody’s violating the agreement, we’re not going to be the only ones
to adhere to it,” Trump said.

New York witches aim hex at Supreme
Court's Brett Kavanaugh despite death threats-[Reuters]-By Gabriella
Borter-YAHOONEWS-•October 22, 2018
NEW YORK (Reuters) -
Melissa Madara was not surprised to receive death threats on Friday as
her Brooklyn witchcraft store prepared to host a public hexing of newly
confirmed U.S. Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh this weekend. The
planned casting of an anti-Kavanaugh spell, one of the more striking
instances of politically disgruntled Americans turning to the
supernatural when frustrated by democracy, has drawn backlash from some
Christian groups but support from like-minded witch covens."It gives the
people who are seeking agency a little bit of chance to have that
back," Madara said. The ritual was scheduled to be livestreamed on
Facebook and Instagram at 8 p.m. EDT on Saturday (1200 GMT
Sunday).Seated at a desk phone among bird skulls and crystal balls at
Catland Books, the occult shop she co-owns, Madara said the Kavanaugh
hex is expected to be the most popular event the store has hosted since
its 2013 opening, including spells aimed at President Donald Trump.
Madara declined to provide details of what the latest ritual will
entail.More than 15,000 people who have seen Catland Books promotions on
Facebook have expressed interest in attending the event, vastly
exceeding the shop's 60-person capacity.Not everyone is a witchcraft
fan. Madara said she had fielded numerous irate calls from critics, with
at least one threatening violence. “Every time we host something like
this there’s always people who like to call in with death threats or
read us scripture," she said.As far as supporters go, some are sexual
assault survivors still angry that the U.S. Senate confirmed Kavanaugh's
lifetime appointment to the nation's highest court despite accusations
that he had sexually assaulted multiple women.Kavanaugh has denied the
allegations, and an FBI investigation failed to corroborate his
accusers' accounts.Democrats hope lingering outrage over Kavanaugh,
particularly among women, will translate into election gains for them on
Nov. 6. Republicans are likewise trying to seize on anger among
conservatives at how they perceive Kavanaugh was mistreated.Believers in
mysticism on both sides of the political divide are taking matters into
their own hands.Plans for the Catland Books event have sparked "counter
hexes" around the country by those seeking to undo the spell that the
Brooklyn witches cast against Kavanaugh, Madara said.Even mainstream
clergy was joining the fray. Rev. Gary Thomas of the Diocese of San Jose
in California said on Friday that he would include Kavanaugh in his
prayers at Saturday mass.(Reporting by Gabriella Borter; Editing by

- The U.S. Justice Department has opened an investigation into child
sex abuse by priests in Pennsylvania, six Roman Catholic Church dioceses
said on Thursday. The investigation is the first statewide probe by
federal authorities of allegations of sex abuse and cover-up by the
Catholic Church in the United States, according to groups representing
abuse victims. The Church in Chile, Australia and Ireland is also reeling
from crises involving sexual abuse of minors with surveys showing the
scandal has eroded confidence in the Church and Pope. The Pennsylvania
dioceses said they had received federal subpoenas following a state
grand jury report that alleged over 300 Catholic priests in Pennsylvania
had sexually abused children over 70 years. The Associated Press first
reported the Justice Department investigation on Thursday. The dioceses
of Allentown, Erie, Harrisburg, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Scranton
said they were cooperating with the investigation but declined further
comment. The Justice Department and U.S. Attorney's Office in
Philadelphia declined to comment. An 884-page report made public in
August by Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro after a two-year
investigation contained graphic examples of children being groomed and
sexually abused by clergymen. Shapiro said at the time that it was
largely based on documents from secret archives kept by the dioceses,
including handwritten confessions by priests. The report cited 301
priests, some of whom have died.Tim Lennon, president of Survivors
Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP), said the investigation was
long overdue. Four statewide grand juries in Pennsylvania since 2003
identified around 500 alleged sexual predators among acting or former
Catholic clergy, he said."In what other institution could you have 500
criminals and not be prosecuted?" asked Lennon, who said he was raped by
a Catholic priest when he was a child.Lennon said SNAP had asked the
federal government three times since 2002 for a nationwide investigation
of 15,000 active or retired Catholic clergy accused of being sexual
predators."This is a first. Federal law enforcement has been awfully
silent on the Catholic abuse problem, and it's about time," said Anne
Barrett-Doyle, co-director of BishopAccountability.org, a U.S.-based
resource center that tracks cases of clerical abuse worldwide. She said
the only other U.S. federal probe was of a bishop in Boston in the early
2000s.In September, U.S. Catholic bishops said they would set up a
hotline for accusations of sexual abuse against bishops and other church
leaders, or allegations of cover ups by such people.(Reporting by

Remains of more than 60 babies, fetuses found stashed in Detroit funeral home-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-October 22, 2018
(Reuters)
- The remains of more than 60 infants and fetuses were found stashed in
a Detroit funeral home, police said on Friday, calling the discovery
"deeply disturbing."The incident comes about a week after the badly
decomposed bodies of 11 babies were found hidden in a false ceiling at a
different funeral home in the Michigan city.No connection between the
two cases has yet been established, Detroit's police chief said. He
added city, state and federal investigators were looking to form a task
force to investigate the improper storage of human
remains.Unrefrigerated boxes containing about 36 sets of remains were
recovered from the Perry Funeral Home along with another 27 sets of
remains in a freezer, police said."This is deeply disturbing," Detroit
Police Chief James Craig told reporters on Friday. "I have never seen
anything like this in my 41-1/2 years (on the force),
ever."Investigators are working to establish ages and identities. An
official with Perry Funeral Home, which offers burial and cremation
services, declined to comment on the incident. The Michigan Department of
Licensing and Regulatory Affairs said in a statement it revoked the
funeral home's license and shut down the facility after inspectors
"found heinous conditions and negligent conduct at the home."Police have
also launched an investigation into the now defunct Cantrell Funeral
Home, where the remains of the 11 babies were uncovered last week after
authorities received an anonymous letter leading them to the remains. Its
former operators have not commented to media. In April, state regulators
found "deplorable, unsanitary conditions" at the same premises,
including embalmed bodies in an unrefrigerated garage and other badly
decomposed remains, the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory
Affairs said in a statement at the time. The funeral home was also
accused of several licensing and financial violations, the agency
said.(Reporting by Jon Herskovitz in Austin, Texas; Editing by Sam

Korea's box of bones: A mythical king and the dream of Korean
unification-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-By Josh Smith and Jeongmin Kim-October
22, 2018
SEOUL (Reuters) - It's the stuff of an Indiana
Jones movie: supernatural kings, ancient tombs, and government-backed
archaeologists striving to harness the power of legend for a greater
cause. On a divided Korean peninsula, tales of King Dangun - the mythical
founder of the first Korean kingdom more than 4,350 years ago - play a
quiet but persistent role in keeping the dream of reunification
alive. This mythology made an appearance in September when North Korean
leader Kim Jong Un took South Korean President Moon Jae-in to the top of
Mount Paektu, the supposed birthplace of Dangun.Moon also invoked the
legend in an unprecedented speech in Pyongyang, calling for Korea to be
reunited."We had lived together for 5,000 years but apart for just 70
years," said Moon, whose parents came from what is now North Korea. For
many South Koreans, the idea of unification has become increasingly
unrealistic amid a widening gulf between the two Koreas more than 70
years after they were partitioned in the wake of World War II.The legend
of Dangun, however, plays a lasting role in promoting unification
because it portrays Koreans as a homogenous group destined to live
together, said Jeong Young-Hun, a professor at Seoul's Academy of Korean
Studies."Dangun is a basis for Koreans to feel the necessity for
pursuing harmony and unification," he said. "Dangun is a basis for
seeing unification as something possible."There’s little evidence for
the glorious king or the thousands of years of Korean unity Dangun is
said to have founded.Still, that hasn’t stopped North Korea from
claiming to have found his tomb and South Korea from eulogizing the
unity of a kingdom that once challenged the might of China’s
dynasties."In both Koreas, (Dangun) has been used to emphasize the
uniqueness, the singularity, homogeneity and antiquity of the Korean
people," said Michael Seth, a professor of Korean history at James
Madison University in Virginia. "Whether a real person or not, he is
used by both Koreas to emphasize the unity as well as the uniqueness of
the Korean people."-NORTH KOREA'S BOX OF BONES-Scholars say the chances
that Dangun actually existed are close to zero.According to Korean
legend, Dangun was the son of a god who wanted to be a man, and a bear
who wanted to be a woman."Dangun is a myth," said Yeungnam University
archaeologist Lee Chung Kyu.North Korea's founders originally disdained
the story of Dangun as superstition incompatible with their ostensibly
socialist ideology. However, officials have since gone to great lengths
to capitalize on the mythology and cement the ruling Kim family's claim
to Dangun's legacy.Official North Korean narratives have claimed Mount
Paektu as the "sacred mountain of revolution" and assert that Kim Jong
Un's father, Kim Jong Il, was born on its slopes. Many historians place
his actual birthplace in the former Soviet Union. In the mid-1990s, North
Korean authorities announced they had discovered the tomb of Dangun and
his wife just outside Pyongyang, going so far as to "reconstruct" a
white stone pyramid flanked by rough-hewn obelisks and statues of
ancient princes and snarling beasts. At the time, North Korean leader Kim
Il Sung said constructing the mausoleum was designed to demonstrate
“that Korea has a history spanning 5,000 years, that the Koreans are a
homogeneous nation of the same blood since their emergence,” according
to a state media article from 2015.For 100 euros each, or about $115,
tourists can peek inside a glass box containing what the North Koreans
say are the bones of Dangun and his wife. The high price and a reputation
as an underwhelming experience mean few visitors pay to see the bones,
Western tour guides say.Amid a previous temporary thaw in relations
between the two Koreas in 2007, a delegation led by South Korea's
defense minister visited Dangun's royal tomb, and Pyongyang gave
permission for South Korean tourists to visit Mount Paektu."A COMMON
DESTINY"Unlike Dangun, there is more evidence for Gojoseon, the kingdom
he purportedly founded.Seoul's National Museum of Korea has a display of
bronze daggers, ceramics, and other relics said to be from the period
and credited as "the first state ever to emerge on the Korean
Peninsula".Signs at the museum say Gojoseon lasted from 2,333 BCE to 108
BCE and "was powerful enough to compete as equals" with major dynasties
in China. However, historians say details are disputed and have often
been manipulated for political purposes."The early part of Gojoseon
cannot be recognized as a state, especially not as a homogenous ethnic
nation-state," said Yeungnam University's Lee, who argues the period was
more likely marked by chiefdoms or tribes that only much later formed a
more unified kingdom. The idea of Dangun became especially popular among
Koreans suffering under Japanese colonial occupation from 1910 to 1945,
leading to the establishment of a home-grown religious movement that
continues today. The myth has sometimes been misused, leading to
"chauvinism and extreme nationalism," Lee said.Still, Dangun makes his
mark in both Koreas.During the national Foundation Day holiday on
October 3, hundreds of South Koreans gathered at shrines in Seoul to
make offerings, wear masks depicting a bearded Dangun, and rally for a
peaceful and united Korea. On the same day in North Korea, senior
unification officials visited the mausoleum to perform an "ancestral
sacrifice for Dangun" and call for a unified Korea.Jeong said the
unifying themes of Dangun and Gojoseon are "imperative" as the two
Koreas try to overcome their differences."The most important ground for
justifying unification can be found in the idea that we are a
homogeneous group bound together by a common destiny – that we have
lived as one throughout history and we have to continue to do so in the
future,” he said.(Editing by Lincoln Feast.)
