Archaeologists in Egypt discover mummification workshop-Alongside a trove of artifacts, archaeologists find an embalmer's cachette they believe will reveal more about the oils used in mummification 2,500 years ago-By AP-JUL 16,18

CAIRO — Archaeologists in Egypt stumbled upon a new discovery dating back to more than 2,500 years ago near Egypt’s famed pyramids at an ancient necropolis south of Cairo. The discovery, which includes a mummification workshop and a shaft, used as a communal burial place, is located at the vast Saqqara necropolis, which is part of the Memphis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Memphis, the first capital of ancient Egypt, and its large necropolis are home to a wide range of temples and tombs as well as the three pyramids of Giza. The latest find, announced at a press conference Saturday, belongs to the Saite-Persian Period, from 664-404 BC The site, which lies south of Unas pyramid, was last excavated more than 100 years ago, in 1900.Among the artifacts found were a gilded silver mummy mask, fragments of mummy cartonnages, canopic cylindrical jars and marl clay and faience cups. Many of them will be displayed in the under-construction Grand Egyptian Museum, the first phase of which is expected to be inaugurated later this year.Down the 30-meter-deep shaft lie several mummies, wooden coffins, and sarcophagi. The shaft is comprised of burial chambers carved into the bedrock lining the sides of two hallways. In the mummification workshop, an embalmer’s cachette was found that archaeologists believe will reveal more about the oils used in the mummification process in the 26th Dynasty.“We are in front of a goldmine of information about the chemical composition of these oils,” archaeologist Ramadan Hussein said at the press conference.“It’s only the beginning,” added Antiquities Minister Khaled al-Anani. He told reporters that the sites will likely yield more discoveries after further excavation.Egypt has gone at great lengths to revive its vital tourism industry, still reeling from the political turmoil that followed a 2011 popular uprising. It hopes such discoveries, along with the inauguration of the museum at the Giza plateau, will help encourage more tourists to visit.

Iran’s Rouhani says US ‘isolated’ on sanctions-Even as top companies pull out of Iran, Tehran says Trump has no support from other countries for the move-By AFP-JUL 16,18-TOI

TEHRAN, Iran — The United States is increasingly isolated in its move to reimpose sanctions on Tehran after quitting the international nuclear deal, President Hassan Rouhani said Saturday, vowing to resist American “plots.”“The path chosen by the Islamic Republic of Iran is perseverance, resistance,” Rouhani said in televised remarks. “Each time that we were able to thwart the plots, the people and the government were side by side.”Over the objections of allies, Trump in May pulled the United States out of the nuclear deal signed between Tehran and world powers in 2015.He reimposed US sanctions that had been suspended in return for controls on Tehran’s nuclear program, effectively barring many multinational firms from doing business in Iran.“The United States is more and more isolated on the subject of sanctions,” said Rouhani. “The illegal logic of the United States is not supported by any of the international organizations.”Iran has faced mounting economic woes since Trump’s announcement, which added to pressure on its currency. The rial has lost around half its value against the dollar in nine months. Many importers and exporters have complained they do not have enough currency to enable trade with foreign countries. But Rouhani said Iran would ensure exporters and importers have “the necessary currency.”

Parents of Hebron shooter berate ex-defense minister at Jerusalem synagogue-Azaria family repeatedly accuse Moshe Ya'alon of selling out their son for political reasons, are asked to leave-By TOI staff-JUL 16,18

The parents of Elor Azaria, the Israeli solider who was convicted of  manslaughter for shooting dead an incapacitated Palestinian attacker two years ago, angrily confronted the former defense minister Moshe Ya’alon in Jerusalem this week.Hadashot news said the Azarias attended an event in a synagogue where Ya’alon was speaking and proceeded to berate him in front of the audience, claiming that he and the rest of the defense establishment abandoned their son.“How is that you lied and said after the military police investigation that my son stinks? How could you have sold out an outstanding solider?” Oshrat Azaria, the ex-soldier’s mother, asked. “How is it that you were talking to the media by 4 pm and our son wasn’t even questioned until 6:30 that day? “There hasn’t even been a real investigation,” she charged. “It’s been two and a half years and I’m still waiting for an answer. You’re just trying to promote yourself.”The report quoted eyewitnesses who said the Azarias would not let the former defense minister get a word in, and were eventually asked to leave the premises. The father, Charlie Azaria, also confronted Ya’alon, asking him why he continued “to slander the name of my son any my family… All of my children and I have served in the IDF; I’ve given 33 years to defending this country.”Ya’alon eventually was able to respond to the couple, but did not address their questions, instead telling them their son’s deeply divisive trial had been exploited politically.“It’s something that’s being used cynically and politically at your expense. I know your suffering, I remember calling you after the verdict was handed down,” he said. “But enough, it’s over.”“There were no questions being asked there, but a series of loud, false, and venomous attacks that desecrated the synagogue,” Ya’alon said.Several hours later, Ya’alon responded to the incident in a statement, blasting the Azarias for trying to instigate a public confrontation. “Their claims are based on ‘alternative facts,’ not to mention all out lies. Any attempts to present the real facts to the family were interrupted rudely.”Azaria, the so-called “Hebron shooter,” was found guilty by an IDF military court last year of killing Abdel Fattah al-Sharif, who several minutes earlier had attacked two IDF soldiers with a knife. In February 2017, Azaria was sentenced to an 18-month prison term, which IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot later shortened by four months. He was released from a military jail in May.Azaria has never expressed remorse for his actions. He has maintained that he opened fire because he believed Sharif had a bomb hidden under his clothes. The military court, however, dismissed that claim, citing the soldier’s nonchalance in the moments before he killed Sharif, and his statements to fellow soldiers that the assailant deserved to die for attacking his comrades. The Hebron shooter case revealed deep divisions in Israeli society over the army’s activities in the West Bank, with some — mostly on the right — arguing that he had behaved heroically in killing the Palestinian assailant, while others harshly criticized Azaria for breaking the law, saying he deserved a harsher sentence than he received. In the face of strong condemnation of Azaria’s actions by top military brass, including IDF Chief of Staff Eisenkot and then-defense minister Ya’alon, far-right supporters and some politicians had accused the defense establishment of abandoning one of its own.

Trump to golf in Scotland as thousands due to protest-Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon refuses to meet the US president; anti-Trump rally to be held in Edinburgh-By AFP-TOI-JUL 16,18

TURNBERRY, United Kingdom — US President Donald Trump is wrapping up a four-day visit to Britain, dominated by his blasting of Prime Minister Theresa May’s Brexit strategy, by spending the weekend in Scotland.Trump is staying at one of his luxury golf resorts in Turnberry, southwest of Glasgow, in a private part of the trip before heading for a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki. He tweeted Saturday that he is at Turnberry for “two days of meetings, calls and hopefully, some golf – my primary form of exercise!”Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, a fierce critic of Trump, has refused to meet him and he was instead met at Glasgow airport by a British government representative.A major anti-Trump rally is planned in Edinburgh on Saturday after a mass protest in London Friday that organizers said drew more than 250,000 people.A pro-Trump demonstration is also due to be held in London by alt-right campaigners, as well as a counter, anti-fascism protest. In an extraordinary interview with Friday’s edition of The Sun tabloid, Britain’s most widely read newspaper, Trump said May’s plan for post-Brexit ties with the EU would “probably kill” prospects for a UK-US trade deal.He also said former foreign minister Boris Johnson, who resigned over the plan earlier this week and is a potential challenger to May, would make “a great prime minister.”Trump said he had advised May to take a different strategy on Brexit, telling the paper: “I would have done it much differently. I actually told Theresa May how to do it but she didn’t agree, she didn’t listen to me.”The unprecedented criticism comes at a particularly sensitive time for May, who is facing a rebellion by Brexit hardliners against her proposals to retain strong trading ties with the EU even after Britain leaves the bloc. After meeting May at her Chequers country retreat outside London on Friday, Trump sounded more conciliatory, saying that bilateral relations “have never been stronger.”“Whatever you do is okay with us, just make sure we can trade together, that’s all that matters,” he told May.“The United States looks forward to finalizing a great bilateral trade deal,” he said, and repeatedly praised May’s leadership, saying she was a “terrific woman.”‘Global Scot’-Trump is staying at the Turnberry golf resort — the same course he inaugurated on June 24, 2016, a day after the referendum in which Britain voted to leave the EU.Discord over his other golf course in Scotland dating back over a decade means there is little love lost between Trump and the pro-independence government in Scotland. In 2006, the billionaire real estate tycoon bought 1,400 acres (567 hectares) of land near Aberdeen and promised to build “the world’s best golf course.”The proposal was welcomed by the government at the time and Trump was named a “Global Scot” business ambassador. But local councilors rejected the plan amid fierce opposition from conservationists and neighboring residents. The SNP government overturned the councilors’ decision shortly after golf-loving nationalist Alex Salmond took control, kicking off a short and tempestuous bromance with Trump who called Salmond “an amazing man.”However, the relationship cooled when Trump’s promise to create 6,000 jobs and invest £1 billion ($1.3 billion) failed to materialize, and Trump began interfering with the SNP’s flagship plan to make Scotland a renewable energy powerhouse. The Trump Organization has spent around £100 million on the course, known as Trump International Golf Links, and employed around 650 temporary and permanent staff — but the company insists the resort remains a work in progress.‘I am the evidence’-Three years later Trump visited the Scottish Parliament to complain about plans to build 11 “ugly” offshore wind turbines near his newly minted Aberdeenshire resort, insisting the development would do “terrible damage” to Scottish tourism.Trump declared “I am the evidence” when Scottish lawmakers asked him to back up his assertion that the wind farm would “destroy the financial well-being of Scotland.”Sturgeon, who rescinded Trump’s “Global Scot” title after he pledged to cut Muslim immigration into the United States, switched on the first wind turbine last week.“A famous golf course owner from America who, I think, has now turned his hand to politics, decided to take the Scottish government to court to try to block these wind turbines,” she told reporters.“The Scottish government beat that American golf course owner in court… and these amazing wind turbines generated their first electricity,” she said.

Israel shutters PA-backed conference in East Jerusalem, top businessman arrested-Minister Erdan says event organized by Palestinian Mufti, also attended by Turks, promoted 'incitement' against Israel-By TOI staff-JUL 16,18

A conference in East Jerusalem sponsored by the Palestinian Authority and attended by members of the Islamic Movement in Israel and of the Turkish Waqf was shut down and raided by police on Saturday by order of Minister of Public Security Gilad Erdan, whose office said the event promoted “incitement” against the state of Israel.Police also arrested Munib al-Masri, a powerful Palestinian businessman who funded the conference. The event, which took place at the Hind al-Husseini College in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, was organized by the Mufti of Jerusalem, Akrama Sabri. According to police, Sabri, who was recently issued a travel ban by Israel, previously held several events alongside members of the Hamas terrorist movement, the Ynet news site reported. The Ministry of Public Security said the conference was deliberately scheduled to take place on the anniversary of a terror attack at the Temple Mount last year, in which Israeli police officers Haiel Sitawe and Kamil Shnaan were killed by three Arab Israeli gunmen who had stashed their weapons on the Mount.Shuttering the conference, Erdan accused the Palestinian Authority of “repeatedly attempting to undermine Israel’s sovereignty in Jerusalem.”He said Israel would “continue to fight and prevent any attempt to fan [the flames of] violence in the city.”Erdan said the event was “a conference of incitement” and charged that “the connection between the Islamic Movement, the Palestinian Authority and Turkish elements is a brazen attempt to encourage violence on the anniversary of the attack on the Temple Mount.”The terror attack last July 14 sparked weeks of tension in Jerusalem. Israel introduced new security measures, including metal detector gates, designed to prevent weapons being brought onto the Mount — a move which prompted widespread protests and was ultimately reversed.

Thailand's cave boys to be discharged from hospital on Thursday-[Reuters]-By Panu Wongcha-um and James Pearson-YAHOONEWS-July 16, 2018

CHIANG RAI, Thailand (Reuters) - Twelve Thai boys and their soccer coach rescued from a flooded cave in Thailand are recovering well from the ordeal and will be discharged from hospital next week, health minister Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn said on Saturday. The last of the 12-member "Wild Boars" soccer team and their coach were brought out of the Tham Luang cave, near the border with Myanmar, on Tuesday night, safely ending a perilous rescue and evoking international relief and joy.The boys and their coach have been in hospital in the northern town of Chiang Rai since they were brought to safety. In a video played at a news conference on Saturday, they appeared well, sitting up in bed and thanking their rescuers. Some said they were looking forward to eating their favorite food such as pork fried rice and sushi."I want to have crispy pork rice and barbecue pork rice," Pipat Photi, 15, said in the video."I want pork knuckle rice," said Duangpetch Promtep, 13. "Thank you for all the moral support."Some of the boys lost as much as 5 kg (11 lb) but had started to regain weight in hospital, Piyasakol told reporters. Those who were suffering pneumonia after the rescue have also recovered and all 13 should leave hospital on Thursday, he said"I am in good health now," said one of the boys, a 14-year-old nicknamed Note. "Thanks for saving me."The boys, aged 11 to 16, and their 25-year-old coach had planned to explore the cavern complex for about an hour after soccer practice on June 23. But a rainy season downpour flooded the tunnels, trapping them. Two British divers found them on July 2, squatting on a mound in a flooded chamber several kilometers inside the complex. Rescuers then had to work out how to get them out through the tunnels, some of which were full of fast-flowing floodwater.MENTAL HEALTH CONCERNS-All 13 were brought to safety over the course of a three-day rescue, organized by Thai navy SEALs and an international team of cave-diving experts.Samarn Kunan, 38, a former member of the elite SEALs unit, was the only casualty in the operation. His wife has urged the boys not to blame themselves for his death.Samarn was cremated on Saturday in a special ceremony sponsored by the Thai royal family which was broadcast live on local television. He was also posthumously promoted and awarded a royal medal for his bravery and contribution to the rescue, according to a statement published on Saturday in the Thai Royal Gazette. At the scene of the rescue, 4,000 volunteers arrived on Saturday to help clean up and "restore the landscape" in and around the cave complex, according to a statement from the Chiang Rai provincial office. While the boys and their coach are now in good health, there is concern about how they will deal with their fame, given the huge attention on the case within Thailand and beyond.Their story is already set for a retelling by Hollywood, with two production companies looking to put together movies about the boys and their rescue."We need to prepare both the children and their families for the attention they will receive," Piyasakol said.He warned relatives of the boys to resist giving interviews to media over fears they could have a negative impact on their mental health."Everyone has worked well together to bring the children out. We worked well together then and we should work well together now so the children can recover physically and mentally as they grow up," Piyasakol said.(Editing by Robert Birsel and Helen Popper)

Landslide at Myanmar jade mine kills at least 15, injures 45: official-[Reuters]-By Shoon Naing-YAHOONEWS-July 16, 2018

YANGON (Reuters) - A landslide killed at least 15 people in northern Myanmar on Saturday, with 45 others injured after the latest disaster in the Hpakant jade mining region, a local official said.Miners searching for the precious mineral were buried by muddy earth from a slope that collapsed, said Kyaw Swar Aung, the administrator of Hpakant, in the northern Kachin state. The search in the area of Lone Khin was called off for the day after 15 bodies were pulled from the mud and 45 injured people were taken to a nearby hospital, he told Reuters by phone.“We stopped the search at 5:30pm and will continue tomorrow,” he said, adding that authorities had appealed to people in the area to report anyone still missing. He said the affected miners were not working for a company. Informal jade scavengers, or hand-pickers, are frequently caught up in landslides in the poorly regulated mining area.In May, at least 14 miners were killed in a similar collapse in the same area, and more than 100 people were killed in a landslide in Hpakant in 2015.Han Thar, secretary for the ruling National League for Democracy party in Hpakant, spoke to Reuters from just above where the landslide had occurred, and said more people may still be buried in the rubble.“There might have been about 100 people,” he said. “When the land fell into a pond, the workers in the water were buried by soil.”Environmental advocacy group Global Witness put the value of jade production in Myanmar at around $31 billion in 2014. Experts say most of the stones are smuggled to China.(Reporting by Shoon Naing; Editing by Simon Lewis and Stephen Powell)

Syria rebels surrender heavy arms in Daraa city, says state media-Those who reject the reconciliation deal will be allowed safe passage out of the city-By AFP-TOI-JUL 16,18

DAMASCUS, Syria — Syrian rebels in the southern city of Daraa were surrendering their heavy weapons to government forces on Saturday, state media said, under a deal brokered by regime ally Russia.State news agency SANA said opposition fighters in the neighborhood of Daraa al-Balad, a district in the city’s rebel-held southern half, handed over heavy ammunition and other equipment. It came a day after the regime and rebels began dismantling the dirt barriers that had divided the city for years, AFP’s correspondent said. The agreement reached on Wednesday will see Daraa city — the cradle of Syria’s seven-year uprising — fall back into government control.Negotiated by Moscow, it provides for rebels to hand over heavy- and medium-duty weapons and to “reconcile” legally with the government, according to state media. Those who rejected the deal would be allowed safe passage out of the city. The terms mirror a broader deal announced on July 6 for the entire province of Daraa, which would be implemented in three stages: the eastern countryside first, then the city, and finally the province’s west. The violence had led up to 200,000 displaced Syrians to seek safety along the border with the Israeli Golan Heights. While rebels have handed over weapons to government forces in dozens of towns, no transfers of fighters or civilians to the opposition-held north have taken place yet.The Daraa deals are the latest in a string of so-called “reconciliation” agreements that typically follow blistering military offensives. After using the strategy to secure Damascus and other strategic parts of Syria since 2015, President Bashar Assad turned his attention to the south.Beginning on June 19, Syrian and Russian bombardment pounded rebel areas in Daraa and the neighboring province of Quneitra, ostensibly protected by an internationally-agreed ceasefire. The onslaught came to an end with the July 6 ceasefire.Regime forces now hold more than 80 percent of Daraa province, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based war monitor that relies on a network of sources inside the country. Some western areas of the province remain under opposition control, and the deal excludes a southwestern patch held by an affiliate of the Islamic State jihadist group.Syria’s conflict has killed more than 350,000 people and displaced millions since it started in 2011.

PA denies kidnapped Arab Israeli boy was held in West Bank-Palestinian police contradict Israeli account of 7-year-old Karim Jumhour's disappearance, claim child was found in Lod, not Ramallah-By TOI staff-JUL 16,18
The Palestinian Authority hailed the return of a kidnapped 7-year-old Arab Israeli boy to his family on Friday, but denied Israel’s statements that he had been held in the West Bank.At a press conference, PA police spokesman Louis Arzeikat underscored that Palestinian police and security forces helped in searching for Karim Jumhour, who Israeli police said was held in Ramallah after being snatched from outside his home in the northern Israel city of Qalansawe earlier this week.Arzeikat said Palestinian security forces raided seven houses in Ramallah looking for Jumhour based on Israeli intelligence, but those searches turned up no evidence of the boy.“After investigation by Palestinian security forces, it turned out that… the boy was not in any of those houses,” he said. “It turned out that the boy wasn’t even in the Palestinian Authority.”Arzeikat said a Palestinian man linked to one of the Israeli suspects in Jumhour’s disappearance led police to locating the boy in Lod.Jumhour was returned to his family on Friday, three days after he was snatched from outside his home in Qalansawe in northern Israel.Police have yet to comment on a possible motive behind the kidnapping or name any of the four suspects arrested in connection to it. Reports in Hebrew-language media said the incident could have been the result of a financial dispute between two families. The Jumhours on Wednesday received a ransom demand of NIS 4 million ($1,090,000).On Friday, Police Commissioner Roni Alsheich said Jumhour was being held in the West Bank, and that the PA was responsible to help secure his release.“We view the Palestinian Authority as directly responsible for Karim’s well-being until his safe return to his family and we expect them to take action to fulfill this responsibility,” Alsheich said.He said police were in talks with their Palestinian counterparts in an effort to secure the boy’s release, and that the Shin Bet security service had also joined the manhunt to locate Jumhour. On Thursday, police arrested four suspects. It is known that three of them were aged 26, 27 and 41, and no details were given about the fourth individual. The main suspect insisted he did not know anything about the family or the case, but a judge remanded him and the other three into custody until next week.Police said one of the suspects in custody confessed involvement in Jumhour’s kidnapping and gave investigators leads on the case. They said the arrests created a “situation in which the child became a burden to those holding him on behalf of the criminals.”Central to the mediation with the kidnappers was the Jarushi crime family from Ramle in central Israel. Karim Jarushi traveled to Ramallah multiple times in recent days and was the first person to meet Jumhour upon his release.Dramatic video footage of Jumhour’s kidnapping on Tuesday shows a white car pulling up outside the family home in Qalansawe and a person inside asking two young boys a question. As they answer, a masked man jumps out of the back seat and shoves Jumhour into the car before it speeds away.On Friday, over 1,000 people gathered in Qalansawe to celebrate Jumhour’s return home.Police have vowed to bring his kidnappers to justice.

PARIS (Reuters) - French President Emmanuel Macron will discuss Syria, Iran and Ukraine with Russian President Vladimir Putin when they meet in Moscow on Sunday, the day of the soccer World Cup final between France and Croatia, a source at the French president's office said.Macron and Putin are expected to meet at the Kremlin before the kick-off.The Elysee Palace source said the situation in Ukraine had not evolved enough for Macron to invite Putin to a Group of Seven summit in Biarritz, in the south of France, in the summer of 2019.Following the G7 summit in Canada, Macron had said he would like to invite his Putin to Biarritz, but that it would depend on Russia's application of the process agreed in Minsk with France, Germany and Ukraine to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. The source said the discussion would also be an opportunity for both leaders to draw their positions on the Syrian crisis closer. On Iran, Macron urged Trump in vain earlier this year not to pull out of an international deal that eased sanctions against Iran in return for curbs on its nuclear program.A Kremlin official said on Friday that Macron was also expected to brief Putin on the recent NATO summit, and that they would discuss Putin's impending meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in Helsinki on Monday.(Reporting by Jean-Baptiste Vey; Writing by Bate Felix; Editing by Kevin Liffey)

HOARDING OF GOLD AND SILVER

JAMES 5:1-3
1 Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you.
2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten.
3 Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.

REVELATION 18:10,17,19

17 For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off,
19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate.

EZEKIEL 7:19
19 They shall cast their silver in the streets, and their gold shall be removed:(CONFISCATED) their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD: they shall not satisfy their souls, neither fill their bowels: because it is the stumblingblock of their iniquity.

LUKE 2:1-3

2  (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)
3  And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.

REVELATION 13:16-18

13  And ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I have opened your graves, O my people, and brought you up out of your graves,

As dozens of rockets hit Israel, IDF pounds Gaza in heaviest strikes since 2014-Palestinian terror groups fire over 100 projectiles at Israel on Saturday afternoon; empty synagogue damaged in the town of Sderot, no injuries reported-By TOI staff-JUL 15,18

Israeli aircraft on Saturday attacked more than 40 targets in the Gaza Strip in the most extensive daytime assault since 2014’s Operation Protective Edge as Palestinian terror groups fired repeated salvos of rockets and mortars into Israel. The surge in violence intensified after midnight Friday-Saturday as the Israel Defense Forces hit an attack tunnel and Hamas training bases in Gaza in response to the moderate wounding of an IDF officer by a hand-grenade thrown during a border riot on Friday.During the night, Palestinians fired more than 30 projectiles into Israel and kept up the attacks on Saturday, firing a further 100 rockets and mortar shells. Residents of Israeli border communities spent the night in bomb shelters and were cautioned to remain close to the shelters during the day.In the evening, several rockets were fired toward the town of Sderot. Iron Dome intercepted several of them.  A synagogue, that was empty at the time was hit by shrapnel and lightly damaged. Sappers were searching the building and it was not immediately clear if it was hit by a Palestinian rocket or parts from the interceptor. There were no injuries. The IDF said Iron Dome intercepted at least 20 projectiles that were headed for residential areas in total.Israel’s political leadership is considering a range of possibilities for trying to halt the rocket fire, including targeted assassinations of Hamas terror chiefs, the use of ground forces, and a ceasefire mediated by Egypt and/or others, but no decision had been made as of Saturday late afternoon, Hadashot TV news reported. The primary target of the IAF strikes Saturday was the Hamas battalion headquarters in Beit Lahia, in the north of the Strip, the army said.“The focus of the attack is a wide-scale strike of the Hamas Battalion HQ in Beit Lahia, which includes urban warfare training facilities, weapon storage warehouse, training compounds, command centers, offices and more,” the IDF said in a statement.“In addition, a weapons manufacturing site and storage facilities housing various types of weapons, including Hamas’ naval capabilities, were struck,” it said. The air force also attacked a Palestinian terrorist cell launching mortars. Palestinian media said the IDF had shelled the home of a senior Islamic Jihad leader, but there was no confirmation from the army. The IDF spokesman said the aim of the operation was to “restore a sense of security” and that the military would “respond as necessary” to a wide range of scenarios. The Hamas-run health ministry said it had not received any reports of injuries in the Israeli strikes.According to IDF spokesman Brig. Gen. Ronen Manelis, the operation had three aims: To end the incendiary kites and balloons from Gaza, end the large-scale border protests, and end the rocket and mortar fire.“There are three factors occurring that we view seriously and cannot allow to continue,” he said, adding that this was the largest daytime Israeli strike on Gaza since the 2014 Gaza War.Media reports said that Egyptian intelligence services had contacted the Hamas leadership in Gaza to try to prevent a further escalation of violence. In the Saturday afternoon salvo, Palestinians fired more than 60 rockets and mortar shells and sirens wailed frequently in southern Israel. Army Radio reported that at least one projectile was intercepted, with the remainder falling in unpopulated areas. There were no immediate reports of injuries.A farm building was lightly damaged in one border community, with no harm to any animals reported.Local residents, who had earlier been told they could return to their usual routines after an earlier barrage overnight Friday, were instructed to remain close to bomb shelters, and large gatherings of people were to be canceled. The day of tension and violence came after terrorists fired more than 30 rockets and mortars toward Israel overnight Friday in the wake of IDF strikes on a number of Hamas targets in Gaza in response to violence along the border. No injuries or damage were reported but warning sirens wailed for much of the night in border communities including the Sdot HaNegev Regional Council area and the town of Sderot. The army earlier on Saturday said it targeted two Hamas attack tunnels as well as other military compounds in the Strip, including those involved in the spate of incendiary kite and balloon attacks.Even as the airstrikes were being carried out, the IDF said rockets were fired toward Israel.According to the IDF, six projectiles were intercepted by the Iron Dome aerial defense system. One rocket landed inside a kibbutz in the Shar HaNegev Regional Council area.Hamas on Saturday said the barrage of rockets and mortar shells into Israeli territory overnight was fired by the “resistance” to “stop Israeli escalation.”The spokesman for the terrorist group, Fawzi Barhoum, also said the projectiles were an “immediate response” that was meant to “deliver the message” to Israel. The army said it held Hamas responsible for all violence emanating from Gaza, which the terror group has ruled since 2007.“The Hamas terror organization is responsible for the events transpiring in the Gaza Strip and emanating from it and will bear the consequences for its actions against Israeli civilians and Israeli sovereignty,” the army said, adding that “the IDF views Hamas’ terror activity with great severity and is prepared for a wide variety of scenarios.”The IDF said aircraft had attacked “an offensive terror tunnel in the southern Gaza Strip, in addition to several terror sites in military compounds throughout the Gaza Strip, among them complexes used to prepare arson terror attacks and a Hamas terror organization training facility.”The IDF published video of its air strikes. The latest round of violence has threatened to spark a further conflagration after weeks of tensions along the volatile border.Israel in recent weeks has repeatedly warned Hamas that while it has no interest in engaging in the kind of conflict that led to the sides fighting three wars over the past decade, it would not tolerate its continued efforts to breach the border fence and its campaign to devastate Israeli border communities with incendiary attacks. On Friday, thousands of Palestinians gathered near the Gaza border for their near-weekly protest. The army said protesters attacked soldiers with grenades, bombs, Molotov cocktails, and rocks.A 15-year-old Palestinian who tried to climb over the fence into Israel was shot dead, media reports in Gaza said.Later the IDF said an Israeli officer was moderately wounded by a grenade thrown at him during the clashes at the border. On Saturday, the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza announced that a 19-year-old succumbed to his wounds sustained at the clashes a day earlier. It was not clear whether the two deaths were tied to the attack that wounded the Israeli officer.Gaza officials said 220 others were hurt in Friday’s riots. Most were treated at the scene, while several dozen were taken to hospital. The violence was held under the banner of “Identifying with Khan al-Ahmar,” a West Bank Bedouin village whose planned demolition by Israel is being debated at the High Court.Since March 30, weekly clashes have taken place on the Gaza border, with Israel accusing Hamas of using the demonstrations as cover to carry out attacks and attempt to breach the security fence. The “March of Return” protests have also seen Palestinians fly airborne incendiary devices toward Israeli territory, sparking hundreds of fires in southern Israel and causing millions of shekels in estimated damages. The Israeli army reportedly notified Hamas in recent days that if the incendiary kite and balloon attacks from the Gaza Strip don’t cease, Israel would respond with major military action. On Monday, Israel announced it was shutting down the Kerem Shalom border crossing — the Strip’s main crossing for commercial goods — in response to the endless stream of incendiary and explosive kites and balloons that have been flown into southern Israel, sparking fires that have burned thousands of acres of land and caused millions of shekels in damages. Humanitarian and essential supplies continue to enter Gaza. The IDF has sought to avoid an escalation of hostilities on the southern front despite the attacks, but according to the Haaretz daily, the political pressure to act has been building as the economic and psychological harm caused by the fires takes its toll.On Wednesday, incendiary kites and balloons sparked 19 fires of varying sizes in Israel, according to local government officials. Fifteen of them occurred in the Eshkol region, which abuts the southern Gaza Strip. The other four occurred in the Sha’ar Hanegev region, which lies to the northeast of the coastal enclave. In response, the Israeli military conducted an airstrike against a group of Palestinians it said was launching incendiary balloons toward Israel from the southern Gaza Strip, east of the city of Rafah. There, too, no injuries were reported. After shuttering Kerem Shalom, the army said humanitarian aid, notably food and medicine, would still be allowed into Gaza, but would require special permission from the military liaison, Maj. Gen. Kamil Abu Rokon, to the Palestinians. The military said the closure would continue so long as Palestinians persist in launching incendiary kites and balloons into Israel.Agencies contributed to this report.

Security Cabinet to convene for emergency meeting as Gaza violence intensifies-Egypt, UN envoy reportedly working to broker a ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian terror groups after one of the heaviest days of fighting since 2014-By TOI staff    -JUL 15,18
The Security Cabinet was set to convene for an emergency meeting Sunday afternoon to deal with the escalating violence in Gaza, as Palestinians fired dozens of rockets into Israel and the IDF attacked more than 40 targets in the Strip in the most extensive daytime assault since 2014’s Operation Protective Edge.Media reports said Israeli ministers were updated on the developments by phone overnight Friday-Saturday as residents of Israeli communities near Gaza spent the night in bomb shelters.Israel’s political leadership was considering a range of possibilities for trying to halt the rocket fire, including targeted assassinations of Hamas terror chiefs, the use of ground forces, and a ceasefire mediated by Egypt and/or others, but no decision had been made as of Saturday late afternoon, Hadashot TV news reported.IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot met with senior commanders in the south to review the situation.Meanwhile, Egyptian sources confirmed on Saturday that Cairo was working to prevent a further escalation and towards mediating a ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian terror groups, the Walla news site reported. Also Saturday, Nikolai Mladinov, the United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, reportedly held talks with several Israeli and Egyptian officials in an attempt to restore calm to the region.According to unconfirmed reports in Gaza, by late afternoon Hamas and Islamic Jihad officials had ordered their operatives to halt all rocket fire. Nevertheless, just minutes after the reports circulated, a projectile fired in the direction of Kibbutz Alumim near Nahal Oz was intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system.Sirens were also heard in the Eshkol region in southern Israel. It was not clear whether any projectiles had landed there as the sirens blared. No injuries or damage were reported on the Israeli side. After midnight Friday-Saturday, the Israel Defense Forces hit an attack tunnel and Hamas training bases in Gaza in response to the moderate wounding of an IDF officer by a hand-grenade thrown during a border riot on Friday.During the night, Palestinians fired more than 30 projectiles into Israel and kept up the attacks on Saturday, firing a further 60 rockets and mortar shells. Palestinians fire 31 rockets and mortar shells from Gaza; IDF renews airstrikes-IDF strikes two tunnels, Hamas bases in Gaza; one rocket falls in a kibbutz; no injuries reported in Israel or Gaza as Israelis in border communities spend night in bomb shelters-By TOI staff-JUL 15,18

Residents of Israeli communities near the Gaza Strip spent the night in bomb shelters as Palestinian terror groups fired at least 31 rockets and mortar shells into Israel, the army said. Six of the projectiles were intercepted by the Iron Dome system.Palestinians in Gaza resumed rocket and mortar fire into Israel after dawn on Saturday, setting off warning sirens. Residents of Israeli communities along the border, who spent a tense night in bomb shelters, reported several loud explosions. The IDF announced Saturday morning it carried out a series of air strikes on targets in the Gaza Strip, including hitting an attack tunnel in the north of the coastal enclave. An earlier strike targeted a tunnel in the south of the Strip. There were no immediate reports of casualties on either side. The renewed violence came after a night in which Israeli aircraft hit several sites in the Gaza Strip including several Hamas bases. Following the air raids, Palestinian terror groups launched several barrages of rockets or mortars into Israel. One rocket landed inside a kibbutz in the Shar HaNegev Regional Council area. The IDF said aircraft had attacked “an offensive terror tunnel in the southern Gaza Strip, in addition to several terror sites in military compounds throughout the Gaza Strip, among them complexes used to prepare arson terror attacks and a Hamas terror organization training facility.”The IDF published video of its air strikes.Following the airstrikes, rocket warning sirens wailed repeatedly in Israeli communities around the Gaza Strip, including the Sdot HaNegev Regional Council area and the town of Sderot. Residents reported sounds of explosions, Israel Radio reported.About 30 minutes after the first wave, sirens sounded again in the Hof Ashkelon Regional Council area and in the Eshkol region. Residents were warned to spend the night in bomb shelters. The army said it held Hamas responsible for all violence emanating from Gaza, which it has ruled since 2007.“The Hamas terror organization is responsible for the events transpiring in the Gaza Strip and emanating from it and will bear the consequences for its actions against Israeli civilians and Israeli sovereignty,” the army said, adding that “the IDF views Hamas’ terror activity with great severity and is prepared for a wide variety of scenarios.”The violence came after an IDF officer was moderately wounded Friday afternoon when a grenade was hurled at him by assailants during clashes at the Gaza border fence, the army reported Friday night. The military said soldiers fired back at the attackers and identified hitting them. The officer was rushed to Beersheba’s Soroka Medical Center and has family has been notified. It was the most serious attack on Israeli forces in over three months of border protests, during which time soldiers have on several occasions been targeted with gunfire and bombs.Israel has long accused Hamas of using the weekly border demonstrations as cover to carry out attacks against Israel.Earlier the Hamas-run health ministry said a 15-year-old Palestinian was killed during the clashes with the Israeli army along the Gaza border. It was not clear whether that incident was tied to the attack that wounded the officer. The Israeli military said thousands took part in the demonstrations, and that soldiers were attacked with grenades, bombs, Molotov cocktails and rocks. Troops responded with less-lethal means and fired live rounds in certain cases, including at one person who tried to cut through the security fence.Gaza officials said 220 others were hurt in the riots. Most were treated at the scene, while several dozen were taken to hospital. Friday’s violence was held under the banner of “Identifying with Khan al-Ahmar,” a West Bank Bedouin village whose planned demolition by Israel is being debated at the High Court. Also Friday, two soldiers were lightly injured in a car crash near the Gaza border in the afternoon when a utility trailer connected to their vehicle overturned. The soldiers were taking part in efforts to put out a large fire caused by an incendiary kite at Kibbutz Or Haner.Firefighters said they managed to get the blaze under control, with the help of several teams and four firefighting planes.Officials said 15 separate fires had erupted in the Gaza periphery since the morning due to incendiary kites and balloons. All were brought under control.Since March 30, weekly clashes have taken place on the Gaza border, with Israel accusing Hamas of using the demonstrations as cover to carry out attacks and attempt to breach the security fence. The “March of Return” protests have also seen Palestinians fly airborne incendiary devices toward Israeli territory, sparking hundreds of fires in southern Israel and causing millions of shekels in estimated damages. The Israeli army has reportedly notified Hamas in recent days that if the incendiary kite and balloon attacks from the Gaza Strip don’t cease, Israel will respond with major military action. The threat comes amid a period of increased tension between Israel and the Gaza-ruling terror group. The IDF has sought to avoid an escalation of hostilities on the southern front despite the attacks, but according to the Haaretz daily, the political pressure to act has been building as the economic and psychological harm caused by the fires takes its toll.Israeli officials have conveyed this to Hamas through an intermediary, and said a significant Israeli response was inevitable if the current situation continued, the paper reported. The army is now examining options for a significant and painful military response against Hamas that would be pinpoint enough not to spark a full-fledged war, the report said.Friday’s report came a day after an Israeli drone fired two missiles toward a group of Palestinians flying incendiary balloons into southern Israel from the northern Gaza Strip, according to Palestinian media. This was the second such airstrike in less than 24 hours. The IDF confirmed that one of its aircraft fired at a cell that had launched balloons toward Israel from northern Gaza. No injuries were reported in the airstrike, which the official Palestinian Wafa news outlet said occurred near the northern Gaza town of Beit Hanoun.Multiple Palestinian news outlets, including Wafa, reported that Israel conducted two strikes on Thursday, one near Beit Hanoun and a second east of the city of Jabaliya in the northern Gaza Strip. An IDF spokesperson denied the Palestinian reports, saying he was “only familiar with one airstrike.”The southern Israeli Eshkol regional council reported that a number of incendiary and booby-trapped balloons had been flown into the area throughout Thursday morning. On Wednesday, incendiary kites and balloons sparked 19 fires of varying sizes in Israel, according to local government officials. Trump faults Obama for US response to Russian hacking-[Associated Press]-ERIC TUCKER and JILL COLVIN-YAHOONEWS-July 15, 2018

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump on Saturday scolded the Obama administration for not responding aggressively enough to Russian hacking of Democratic targets in the 2016 U.S. election — cyberattacks underpinning the indictment of 12 Russian military intelligence officers.Trump's first response to special counsel Robert Mueller's initial charges against Russian government officials for interfering in American politics came in tweets the president posted while at his golf resort in Scotland, two days before a high-stakes summit in Finland with Russian leader Vladimir Putin."The stories you heard about the 12 Russians yesterday took place during the Obama Administration, not the Trump Administration," Trump tweeted. "Why didn't they do something about it, especially when it was reported that President Obama was informed by the FBI in September, before the Election? The indictment announced Friday said the Russians hacked into Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign and the Democratic Party and released tens of thousands of private communications as part of a broad conspiracy by the Kremlin to meddle in an American election that ended up putting Trump in the White House.U.S. intelligence agencies have said Moscow was aiming to help the Trump campaign and harm Clinton's bid.Trump said this past week during his trip to Europe that he would "absolutely, firmly" raise the election-meddling issue with Putin at their meeting, though he added, "I don't think you'll have any 'Gee, I did it, I did it. You got me!'" Leading Democratic senators asked Trump in a letter Saturday to scrap the summit "if you are not prepared to make Russia's attack on our election the top issue you will discuss."Trump's secretary of state, former CIA Director Mike Pompeo, said he was confident the meeting "will put America in a better place. It's very important that they meet."The 29-page indictment lays out how, months before Americans voted in November 2016, Russians schemed to break into key Democratic email accounts, including those belonging to Clinton's campaign chairman, John Podesta, the Democratic National Committee and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.Stolen emails, many politically damaging for Clinton, appeared on WikiLeaks in the campaign's final stretch. The charges say the Russian defendants, using a persona known as Guccifer 2.0, in August 2016 contacted a person in touch with the Trump campaign to offer help. And they say that on the same day Trump, in a speech, urged Russia to find Clinton's missing emails, Russian hackers tried for the first time to break into email accounts used by her personal office.Mueller did not allege that Trump campaign associates were involved in the hacking effort, that Americans were knowingly in touch with Russian intelligence officers or that any vote tallies were altered by hacking. The White House seized on those points in a statement that offered no condemnation of Russian election interference.Trump has repeatedly expressed skepticism about Russian involvement in the hacking while being accused by Democrats of cozying up to Putin. Trump, hours before the indictment was made public, complained about the Russia investigation hours, saying the "stupidity" was making it "very hard to do something with Russia."The Kremlin denied anew that it tried to sway the election. "The Russian state has never interfered and has no intention of interfering in the U.S. elections," said Putin's foreign affairs adviser, Yuri Ushakov. The indictment identifies the defendants as officers with Russia's Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff, also known as GRU. If that link is established, it would shatter the Kremlin denials of the Russian state's involvement in the U.S. elections, given that the GRU is part of the state machine. The Russian defendants are not in custody, and it is not clear they will ever appear in an American court. The indictment accuses the Russian hackers, starting in March 2016, of covertly monitoring the computers of dozens of Democratic officials and volunteers, implanting malicious computer code known as malware to explore the networks and steal data, and sending phishing emails to gain access to accounts. One attempt at interference came hours after Trump, in a July 27, 2016, speech, suggested Russians look for emails that Clinton said she had deleted from her tenure as secretary of state."Russia, if you're listening," Trump said, "I hope you're able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing."That evening, the indictment says, the Russians attempted to break into email accounts used by Clinton's personal office, along with 76 Clinton campaign email addresses.By June 2016, the defendants, relying on fictional personas such as DCLeaks and Guccifer 2.0, began planning the release of tens of thousands of stolen emails, the indictment alleges. The Podesta emails published by WikiLeaks displayed the campaign's private communications, including deliberations about messaging that played into attacks that Clinton was calculating and a political flip-flopper. Private speeches she gave to financial industry firms were particularly damaging within the left wing of the Democratic party and among independents frustrated with the influence of Wall Street in politics. The indictment alleges that Guccifer 2.0 was in touch with multiple Americans in the summer of 2016 about the pilfered material, including an unidentified congressional candidate who requested and then received stolen information. On Aug. 15, 2016, the indictment says, Guccifer 2.0 reached out to someone in contact with the Trump campaign and asked the person if they had seen anything "interesting in the docs I posted?" Guccifer 2.0 said it would be a "great pleasure" to help.Prosecutors say weeks later, Guccifer 2.0 referred to a stolen DCCC document posted online and asked the person, "what do u think of the info on the turnout model for the democrats entire presidential campaign." The person responded, "(p)retty standard."The indictment doesn't identify the person, though longtime Trump confidant Roger Stone acknowledged Friday, through his lawyer, a "24-word exchange with someone on Twitter claiming to be Guccifer 2.0.""This exchange is now entirely public and provides no evidence of collaboration or collusion with Guccifer 2.0 or anyone else in the alleged hacking of the DNC emails," said lawyer Grant Smith. The charges come as Mueller continues to investigate potential coordination between Russia and the Trump campaign. Before Friday, 20 people and three companies had been charged in the investigation.Defendants include four former Trump campaign and White House aides, three of whom have pleaded guilty and agreed to cooperate, and 13 Russians accused in a powerful social media campaign to sway U.S. public opinion in 2016.___Colvin reported from Glasgow, Scotland. Ford repealing sex-ed curriculum to please social conservatives: Horwath-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-July 15, 2018

TORONTO — The leader of Ontario's Opposition said Friday that Doug Ford's decision to repeal Ontario's modernized sex-ed curriculum and replace it with a 20-year-old version was a move to please social conservatives and one that would hurt the province's children.Andrea Horwath called on Ford to keep the 2015 iteration of the curriculum brought in by the previous Liberal government, saying the 1998 version it was being temporarily replaced with was woefully out of date."Doug Ford cares more about the favours that he owes to social conservatives than he does about keeping our young people safe," said the NDP leader, arguing that Ford was aiming to please those who helped him win the party leadership earlier this year."He made back room deals with far-right lobbyists to force this outdated sex-education curriculum on students."Ford's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.Earlier this week, Ford's new Progressive Conservative government said teachers will use the 1998 version of the sex-ed curriculum this fall as consultations are carried out for a new document. The development made good on Ford's repeated promise to do away with the updated curriculum, which he said parents had not been adequately consulted on.The 2015 sex-ed curriculum includes warnings about online bullying and sexting that were not in the previous version, and also discussed same-sex marriage, gender identity and masturbation.Horwath said the 1998 version of the curriculum doesn't reflect the reality of modern society. The Tories' plans on sex-ed were highlighted in Thursday's throne speech, which said the government would replace the Liberal curriculum with a "new age-appropriate one that is based on real consultation with parents."Charles McVety, a vocal social conservative minister who supports Ford and had criticized the modernized sex-ed curriculum, lauded the premier for living up to his word to replace the lesson plan."He's really brought common sense to this," McVety said. "Go to the parents. Study this. Come up with a consensus. We'll end up with something that really helps children."Former NDP legislator and United Church minister Cheri DiNovo, however, said Ford has aligned himself with a "fringe" group on the religious right."They do not speak for the people of faith across this country. They do not speak for Christians or Muslims or Sikhs or Jews or anyone else," said DiNovo, who plans to present Ford on Monday with a petition signed by 200 United Church ministers standing against the replacement of the sex-education curriculum.Di Novo also said Ford's claim there wasn't enough consultation to build the 2015 curriculum isn't true."Some numbers — 4,000 parents, 2,400 educators, 700 students, 170 organizations including CAMH over ten years went into writing this curriculum, so anyone saying there wasn't enough consultation is telling you nonsense," she said. "That is a lot of consultation."Shawn Jeffords, The Canadian Press.

Suicide bomber kills 128 in attack on Pakistani election rally-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-By Gul Yousafzai-July 15, 2018

QUETTA, Pakistan (Reuters) - A suicide bomber killed 128 people at an election rally in southwestern Pakistan in the second election-related attack on Friday, officials said, amid growing tensions over ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif's return ahead of the July 25 vote. The bombing was the most deadly attack in Pakistan in over three years and is the third incident of election-related violence this week.It came as Pakistan's caretaker government launched a crackdown on political gatherings. Sharif, who was ousted by the Supreme Court last year and convicted in absentia of corruption a week ago, arrived in the country to rally his party ahead of the general elections.Baluchistan Home Minister Agha Omer Bangulzai told Reuters that the death toll in the attack had risen to 128 people, with over 150 wounded.Senior police official Qaim Lashari had earlier said that more than 1000 people were in attendance at the rally in the town of Mastung in the violence-plagued province of Baluchistan.Islamist militants linked to the Taliban, al Qaeda and Islamic State have been operating in the province, which borders Iran as well as Afghanistan. It also has an indigenous ethnic Baluch insurgency fighting the central government.Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack, the group's AMAQ news agency said. The group provided no further detail or evidence for its claim. In February 2017, Islamic State claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing at a shrine in southern Pakistan, killing 83 people and wounding over 150.Among those killed in Friday's attack was Baluchistan provincial assembly candidate Siraj Raisani, whose brother Nawab Aslam Raisani had served as the provincial chief minister from 2008 to 2013."My brother Siraj Raisani has been martyred," said Haji Lashkari Raisani, another brother who is also contesting a national assembly seat from Baluchistan.ATTACKS-Raisani is the second electoral candidate to be killed in pre-election violence this week.Police had earlier said that the attack targeted Raisani's convoy but later changed their statement as video footage of a large tent showing damage from the blast was circulated.Earlier in the day, a bomb blast killed four people in the northern town of Bannu when it struck the campaign convoy of Akram Khan Durrani, an ally of Sharif's party from the religious Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal party (MMA).A suicide bomber blew himself up at a rally by an anti-Taliban political party in the northern city of Peshawar on Tuesday, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province killing 20 people including Haroon Bilour who was hoping to win a provincial assembly seat in July. The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.Bilour was part of the predominantly secular, ethnic Pashtun nationalist Awami National Party, which has long competed with Islamist parties for votes in Pakistan’s volatile Pashtun lands, along the border with Afghanistan. His father, senior ANP leader Bashir Bilour, was killed in a suicide bombing in late 2012, in the run-up to Pakistan’s last election.(Writing by Saad Sayeed; Editing by Toby Chopra)
