NATO chief says alliance won’t aid Israel if Iran attacks-Jens Stoltenberg tells Der Spiegel that Jewish state is a partner but not a member, and so 'security guarantee' doesn't apply-By AP and TOI staff-JUN 4,18

BERLIN — NATO’s secretary-general said Saturday that the alliance wouldn’t come to Israel’s defense in case of attack by Iran.Jens Stoltenberg told the magazine Der Spiegel that Israel is a partner, but not a member and that NATO’s “security guarantee” doesn’t apply to the Jewish state.Stoltenberg said NATO isn’t involved in Mideast peace efforts or in conflicts in the region.NATO’s treaty requires the alliance to militarily defend members nations, of which there are 28, but not partner ones. Still, partner states regularly contribute to NATO operations such as those in Afghanistan and naval missions off Somalia and in the Mediterranean Sea.Israel has been a partner of NATO since 1994. From 2010 to 2016, its attempts to open an official mission at the organization’s headquarters in Brussels were stymied by Turkey. He spoke at a time of rising Israel-Iran tensions. Israel has been waging a campaign to prevent Iran from establishing a permanent presence in Syria and Lebanon. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also led opposition the Iran nuclear deal, calling for it to be scrapped or fixed. The US withdrew last month.

Iran, Syria deny existence of Iranian military presence in country-Denials by senior officials from both countries come amid reported Israeli-Russian agreement to remove Iran-backed troops from border area-By TOI staff-JUN 4,18

Senior officials from Iran and Syria claimed Saturday there is no Iranian military presence in the country, amid reports that Israel and Russia reached an agreement for the withdrawal of Iran-backed troops from the Israeli-Syrian border area.Ali Shamkhani, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said Iranian troops are only serving in Syria in an advisory capacity and that Iran has no military bases there.“Contrary to the unlawful presence of the US and some regional countries in Syria, Iran’s presence is not imposed and is not the result of an illegal military aggression,” he told the Shargh newspaper, according to state-run Press TV.“As we have declared earlier, Iranian advisers have no presence in southern Syria,” he added.Shamkhani’s remarks came a day after an Arabic-language daily reported Israel and Russia reached a deal to remove Iranian forces from southern Syria, while also giving Israel a green light to strike Iranian targets in Syria. The reported agreement would see Iranian forces leave southwestern Syria, while allowing Israel to strike Iranian assets deep in the country. Israel agreed not to attack Syrian regime targets, the Asharq Al-Awsat report said.Syria’s foreign minister also denied Saturday there is an Iranian military presence on the country.“Since the beginning of the crisis, Iran has supported Syria in the war against terrorism backed and financed regionally and internationally…[there is] no Iranian military presence [in] the Syrian territories; rather there are advisers who work by the side of the Syrian Arab Army,” Syria’s official SANA news agency reported Walim Moallem saying.Moallem’s comments echoed Syrian President Bashar Assad, who days earlier claimed there are no Iranian soldiers in Syria and that reported Iranian casualties in Israeli airstrikes were a “lie.”Israel has repeatedly warned it will not tolerate an Iranian military presence in Syria or the transfer of advanced weaponry to the Lebanese terror group Hezbollah, which is backed by Iran.Long-simmering tensions between Israel and Iran in Syria stepped up considerably in recent months, beginning in February when an Iranian drone carrying explosives was flown from the T-4 air base in central Syria into Israeli airspace, and was shot down by an IAF helicopter.Iran last month launched a few dozens rockets toward the Golan Heights, in retaliation for an Israeli airstrike in April on the T-4 base in which seven Iranians were killed. Israel in return said it struck dozens of Iranian targets in Syria, as well as Syrian air defense systems that fired at Israeli aircraft during the raids.Shortly after those airstrikes, the Israel Defense Forces revealed “Operation Chess,” acknowledging its ongoing intelligence and air campaign to prevent Tehran from carrying out reprisals for the April strike on T-4.

US said wary of Israel-Russia deal to remove Iranians from southern Syria-Arabic daily says Trump administration fears a reported agreement for the Syrian regime to return to border area eases pressure on Assad-By TOI staff-JUN 4,18

The United States is wary of a reported agreement between Israel and Russia that would see the withdrawal of Iranian-backed troops from Syria’s border with Israel and the return of the Syrian army to the south of the country, an Arabic daily reported Saturday.“The US administration wants to continue exerting pressures on the regime,” Asharq Al-Awsat quoted Western diplomats as saying. On Friday, the newspaper reported Israel and Russia had reached an agreement green-lighting Israeli strikes on Iranian targets in Syria, as well as the withdrawal of Tehran-backed troops from Syria’s border with Israel. The reported agreement would see Iranian forces leave southwestern Syria, while allowing Israel to strike Iranian assets deep in the country. Israel agreed not to attack Syrian regime targets, the report said.A Russian source told Asharq al-Awsat that Russia was tight-lipped about the agreement to maintain “balance” in its diplomatic ties with Israel and Iran.Israel has repeatedly vowed to prevent Iran establishing a permanent presence in Syria and Lebanon and has carried out dozens of air strikes against Iran-backed forces and attempts to smuggle advanced weapons to Hezbollah.“Russia is somehow embarrassed because the talks with the Israelis mainly focused on a plan to remove Iran and its forces from southern Syria,” the source told the paper. Russia is a main ally of Iran.Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations later said he believed a deal regarding the withdrawal of Iranian forces from the border area had been reached between his country and Israel.“As I understand it, an agreement was reached,” Vasily Nebenzya told reporters, according to Russian news agency RIA Novosti. “At this point, I can not answer if it is being realized, but as far as I understand, the parties that were involved in reaching an agreement are satisfied with what they have achieved.”He said even if the reported agreement was not executed immediately, it would happen in the near future. The reported agreement came after Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman met his Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu in Moscow on Thursday for talks focused on Syria.Liberman thanked Russia for “understanding” Israel’s security concerns. However, neither Jerusalem, nor Moscow, publicly acknowledged any agreement between the sides regarding Iran’s military presence in Syria.“It is important to continue the dialogue between us and to keep an open line between the IDF and Russian army,” Liberman told Shoigu. Before leaving Israel for Russia, Liberman said Israel was committed to “preventing Iran and its offshoots from establishing themselves in Syria.”The Kremlin said President Vladimir Putin spoke with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Thursday evening to discuss the situation in Syria. Moscow said the conversation focused on “some aspects of the Syrian settlement,” which it didn’t specify, following up on the two leaders’ talks in Moscow earlier this month. The Liberman-Shoigu meeting came on the heels of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov‘s demand Wednesday that all foreign forces — including those from Iran, Turkey and the US — leave southwestern Syria as soon as possible, as well as his remarks Monday at a press conference in Moscow that only the Syrian regime should field military forces in the country’s southern border areas.“As regards the confrontation between Israel and Iran in Syria, we have agreements on the southwestern de-escalation zone. These agreements have been reached between Russia, the United States and Jordan. Israel was informed about them as we were working on them. They [the agreements] stipulate that this de-escalation zone should consolidate stability, while all non-Syrian forces must be withdrawn from this area,” Lavrov said.Lavrov’s comment apparently referred to areas including the Syrian Golan Heights region abutting the Israeli Golan Heights and the border with Jordan, and indicated that Russia was open to Israeli demands that Iranian forces be kept far from Israel’s borders. The return of the Syrian army to Israel’s northern border in return for the distancing of Iran and its Lebanon-based proxy Hezbollah from the area has been the subject of back channel discussions between Israel and Russia over recent weeks.Liberman visited Russia with a defense establishment delegation, hoping to flesh out the understandings to give Syrian President Bashar Assad control over the Syria-Israel border region.Netanyahu’s office continues to insist publicly that Israel demands the complete ouster of Iran and Hezbollah from the whole of Syria.A source told the Ynet news site on Thursday that “Israel is uninterested in partial agreements, but rather in an exit of all Iranian forces from Syria.”On Wednesday, Netanyahu told ministers that he had spoken with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo primarily to urge the US government to demand that an evolving agreement on troop deployment in Syria between the US, Russia and Jordan make clear that Iranian forces must leave the whole of the country. The agreement appears to be slated to demand that Iranian and Iran-backed forces stay 20 kilometers from the Israeli and Jordanian borders.Amidst a flurry of activity relating to Iran, Meir Ben-Shabbat, Israel’s National Security Adviser, flew to Washington on Wednesday to coordinate positions with the Trump administration.Next week, Netanyahu will leave for France and Germany to discuss Iran’s role in Syria and the nuclear deal which the Europeans are trying to salvage after the US withdrawal earlier this month. He is due to meet with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron, and UK Prime Minister Theresa May.

Michael Oren, French envoy in Twitter spat over UN Gaza vote-Deputy minister accuses Paris of hypocrisy by supporting 'anti-Semitic resolution; French envoy questions whether Oren even read it and says he 'insulted France'-By TOI staff and Agencies-JUN 4,18

Israeli deputy minister Michael Oren on Saturday slammed France for supporting a UN Security Council resolution on Gaza, saying Paris was hypocritical for supporting an “anti-Semitic resolution.”Oren’s comments, in a tweet, prompted outrage from France’s ambassador in Israel Hélène Le Gal who accused Oren of not even reading the resolution and “insulting France.”On Friday the United States vetoed an Arab-backed UN draft resolution calling for protective measures for the Palestinians that won backing from ten countries at the Security Council. A US resolution condemning Hamas also failed.“Praise for the US for vetoing Security Council resolution on Gaza that didn’t mention Hamas and condemned the IDF for defending Israel,” tweeted Oren, the deputy minister in the Prime Minister’s Office who is responsible for diplomacy.Praise for the U.S. for vetoing Security Council resolution on Gaza that didn’t mention Hamas and condemned the IDF for defending Israel. It was not perfect but condemned all the violence against Israel. France is adamantly supporting Israel’s security.”Shame on you M. Oren for insulting France on the eve of the visit of your Prime Minister to Paris. You didn’t read the resolution. It was not perfect but condemned all the violence against Israel. France is adamantly supporting Israel’s security.— Hélène Le Gal (@HeleneLeGal) June 2, 2018-Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to visit Paris and Berlin next week, with talks expected to focus on Iran.At the UN, France, China, and Russia were among the countries that voted in favor of the draft put forward by Kuwait on behalf of Arab countries. Four countries, Ethiopia, the UK, the Netherlands, and Poland abstained.A draft resolution requires nine votes to be adopted in the 15-member council and no veto from the five permanent members — Britain, China, France, Russia, and the United States.US Ambassador Nikki Haley told the council the measure was “wildly inaccurate in its characterization of recent events in Gaza” by condemning Israel for the violence. The Kuwait-drafted text had called for “measures to guarantee the safety and protection” of Palestinian civilians in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, and requested a UN report to propose an “international protection mechanism.”The US, meanwhile, brought its own text to the council: A proposal that would condemn Hamas for its role in the escalation of violence in Gaza in the last two months. The United States was the only country that voted in favor of the draft resolution in the Security Council. Eleven countries abstained while Bolivia, Kuwait, and Russia opposed it.Israeli envoy to the UN Danny Danon lamented the failure of Washington’s motion, saying “Peace and stability will come to our region only when the international community is brave enough to call out the terrorists by name.”He condemned Kuwait’s “hypocritical” resolution that did not “even mention the terrorists of Hamas as the root cause of violence and unrest in our region.” However, he asserted that, thanks to the Americans’ position, “the rules of the game are changing in the Security Council and that the double standard against Israel will not stand.”It was the second time that Haley has resorted to US veto power to block a UN measure on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In December, Haley vetoed a draft resolution that rejected President Donald Trump’s decision to move the US embassy to Jerusalem after all 14 other council members supported it.In two months of mass protests at the Gaza border, some 110 Palestinians were killed and thousands wounded by Israeli military fire. Dozens of the fatalities were members of terror groups, Hamas and Islamic Jihad acknowledged. Israel said its troops were defending its border and accused Hamas of trying to carry out attacks under the cover of the protests.Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad also bombarded southern Israel with rockets and mortar shells Tuesday, and Israel responded by striking targets throughout Gaza. Hamas said Wednesday it had agreed to a cease-fire with Israel.Israel and Hamas are bitter enemies and have fought three wars since the Islamic group seized control of Gaza in 2007. Hamas seeks to destroy Israel, and has said the border protests are intended to erase the border and ultimately “liberate Palestine.”

IDF troops open fire at Gazans breaching border fence-Army says Palestinians were seeking to damage 'security infrastructure' in Israel, fled back into Strip after being shot at-By TOI staff-JUN 4,18

Israeli troops opened fire on two Palestinians spotted crossing into Israeli territory from the Gaza Strip on Saturday afternoon, the army said, amid heightened tensions along the Gaza border. The Israel Defense Forces said troops patrolling the area saw the “terrorist cell” as it breached the border along the southern portion of the border fence. Soldiers opened fire at the Palestinians, who fled back into Gaza. The army said the Palestinians were seeking to damage “security infrastructure” in Israel. There were no reports of injuries.Elsewhere along the border Saturday, incendiary kites flown from Gaza sparked fires near two Israeli communities adjacent to the Palestinian territory. Firefighters were working to put out the burning fields encroaching on Kibbutz Nir Am and Kibbutz Kissufim. On Friday, the army said “thousands of rioters” participated in clashes along the security fence, “burning tires adjacent to the security fence and attempting to damage security infrastructure.”The army said that an IDF vehicle came under fire during the riots and that a Palestinian who breached the border fence in northern Gaza planted a grenade that exploded. No Israeli soldiers were injured.Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry said a volunteer medic was shot dead by Israeli soldiers during the clashes that injured another 100 protesters.Palestinians identified the dead woman as Razan al-Najjar, 21. She was shot near Khan Younis in the south of the territory, health ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra said, bringing the toll of Gazans killed by Israeli fire since the end of March to 123, according to a count by the Hamas-run ministry.Hamas and fellow terror organization Islamic Jihad have acknowledged that dozens of those killed were their members.According to Qudra, Najjar was a volunteer with the ministry, wearing the white uniform of a medic when she was shot in the chest attending to a wounded protester near the fence.Israel says it is facing weekly attacks by violent protesters at the border. It says the riots are orchestrated by Hamas, which rules Gaza, and used as cover for attempted terror attacks and breaches of the border fence. In response to reports of Najjar’s death, the IDF said soldiers at the scene were using riot dispersal means against the protesters and live fire in accordance with army regulations, but would investigate the incident. It added that cases such as Najjar’s, “in which civilians are allegedly killed by IDF fire, are thoroughly examined by the relevant levels of command and are checked by the General Staff Fact Finding Assessment Mechanism.”Agencies contributed to this report.

Gaza preschoolers stage mock killing of Israeli soldier-Graduation at Islamic Jihad-linked preschool features dramatization of Israel's destruction by kids in military fatigues armed with toy guns-By TOI staff-JUN 4,18

Children at a Gaza preschool linked to a Palestinian terrorist organization recently held a graduation ceremony in which the preschoolers wore military uniforms and brandished toy machine guns as they performed a mock hostage-taking and killing of an Israeli solider, a media watchdog group said.Footage of the May ceremony at the Al-Hoda preschool showed the children clad in Islamic Jihad fatigues storming an Israeli building on “Al-Quds Street,” capturing a classmate dressed in traditional ultra-Orthodox Jewish garb and killing another dressed in an IDF uniform. After the hostage is whisked off stage and the soldier is laying prone on the ground, one of the children displays a sign that says “Israel has fallen” in both Arabic and Hebrew. The five-minute performance is set to loud explosions and gunfire. After the performance, several children in military uniforms armed with toy guns return to the stage to demonstrate military formations while an address by late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat plays in the background. The Middle East Media Research Institute, which provided a translation of the video, reported that Al-Hoda is affiliated with the Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorist group, and has held similar ceremonies in the past.MEMRI said that unlike in previous years, Al-Hoda did not post the footage of the graduation to its usual social media channels, instead directing parents to a separate YouTube channel that featured the performance. The graduation ceremony came amid an upsurge in violence in Gaza.In two months of mass violent protests at the Gaza border, some 110 Palestinians were killed and thousands wounded by Israeli military fire. Hamas and Islamic Jihad have acknowledged that dozens of the fatalities were their own members.Israel has accused Hamas of using the clashes as a cover to carry out attacks and attempt to breach the border fence. Both Gaza-based terrorist groups also took responsibility for bombarding southern Israel with dozens of rockets and mortar shells earlier this week. The IDF responded by striking Hamas and Islamic Jihad targets throughout Gaza, before an unofficial ceasefire was reportedly reached between the sides.

Army thwarts attempted tractor ramming attack in Hebron, assailant killed-IDF says Palestinian man shot dead after trying to run over troops with small tractor in West Bank city; no soldiers injured-By TOI staff-JUN 4,18

Israeli troops thwarted an attempted car-ramming attack Saturday in the southern West Bank city of Hebron, the army said. The driver of the vehicle tried to run over soldiers stationed on a road leading to the Tomb of the Patriarchs but was shot dead by troops, according to the Israel Defense Forces. The army said the Palestinian assailant first attempted to run over an officer and another soldier with a small tractor.“The force performed the protocols for stopping a suspicious person, during which the terrorist turned around and continued to drive in order to run over civilians passing by,” the IDF said.“Another soldier standing on the roof of a nearby building identified the threat toward the civilians on the road and opened fire at the terrorist, from which he was killed,” it added. The army said the attacker was a 35-year-old from the nearby village of Beit Ummar. Palestinian media named him as Rami Sabarnah. No soldiers were injured during the incident, the IDF said.

Netanyahu to push hard line on Iran during Europe trip-Future of nuclear deal after US pullout and Iranian presence in Syria expected to dominate PM's talks with heads of France, Germany and UK-By AFP and TOI staff-JUN 4,18

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will travel to Europe Monday to push his hawkish stance on Iran to leaders looking to salvage the nuclear agreement after the United States withdrew.Netanyahu, a fierce opponent of the agreement and the Iranian regime, will meet in turn with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Theresa May.Germany, France and the United Kingdom are three of the signatories of the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) between world powers and Iran, aimed at keeping Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons. The European leaders have been scrambling to preserve the landmark deal after slamming US President Donald Trump’s May 8 decision to withdraw and reimpose sanctions. The fallout from America rejecting the accord is likely to dominate the talks, with Netanyahu expected to firmly oppose European efforts to sustain it.“I will discuss with them ways to block Iran’s nuclear aspirations and Iran’s expansion in the Middle East,” Netanyahu said on Monday of his European meetings, noting the issues were “crucial to Israel’s security.”After years lobbying against the 2015 deal, the decision by close ally Trump to ditch the accord has been greeted as a major triumph by Netanyahu, who has long opposed the deal. The prime minister has dismissed European insistence that the agreement is the best option to prevent Tehran getting the bomb, like Trump arguing that it in fact brought Tehran closer to obtaining nuclear weapons. He has also said that a cash influx into Iran following the lifting of international sanctions as part of the accord has fueled the expansion of Tehran’s military influence in the region, especially in neighboring Syria.-‘No alternative’-But while the US retreat from the deal is seen as a personal victory for Netanyahu, it could also represent a leap into the unknown for Israel and the broader Middle East. While foes Iran and Israel have been kept at bay for decades, an unprecedented May 10 escalation in Syria that saw Israel bomb Iranian targets after Iran fired rockets upon the Golan Heights, has sparked fears of open war.“An Iranian departure from southern Syria alone will not suffice,” Netanyahu said on Tuesday.“The long-range missiles that Iran is working to station in Syria will endanger us even beyond the range of several kilometers from southern Syria; therefore, Iran needs to leave Syria altogether.”While Netanyahu has publicly insisted Iran must withdraw from all of Syria, Arabic-language daily Asharq al-Awsat reported Friday that Israel and Russia had reached an agreement on the withdrawal of Tehran-backed troops from Syria’s border with Israel, as well as allowing Israeli strikes on Iranian targets in Syria-The reported agreement would see Iranian forces leave southwestern Syria, while allowing Israel to strike Iranian assets deep in the country. Israel agreed not to attack Syrian regime targets, the report said.Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations later said he believed a deal had been reached, but said he did not know if it was already being implemented and was mum on its specifics.Israel has repeatedly vowed to prevent Iran establishing a permanent presence in Syria and Lebanon and has carried out dozens of air strikes against Iran-backed forces and attempts to smuggle advanced weapons to Hezbollah. The Europeans have acknowledged concerns over Iran’s regional military activities and its ballistic activities, but sought to maintain the JCPOA while creating a separate arrangement on these issues.Contrary to what the US and Israel say, Europe insists the 2015 agreement works and Iran has abided by it.“There is no alternative,” the EU’s foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said on Monday.Merkel, May and Macron are still waiting for the Israelis and Americans to present another way to curb Iran’s nuclear program, but are under no illusions it will happen in next week’s meetings, according to a European diplomat.Divided on other issues, the Europeans have emphasized their cohesion on the JCPOA, fearing that ripping it up could benefit hardliners in Iran and push Tehran to resume large-scale uranium enrichment. If that happens, the fear is it will once again make striking Iran a real option for Israel. On Thursday, a former Mossad chief said that in 2011 Netanyahu had ordered him and the military chief of staff to prepare an attack on Iran within 15 days.According to Tamir Pardo’s interview on the “Uvda” television program, such a directive could either mean “he really means it,” or be a means to deliver a message, for example to the US, and perhaps drive it to take action.Other major issues look set to be left on the sidelines in the talks with European leaders. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is in the spotlight after the worst military flare-up in Gaza since a 2014 war raised fears this week of yet another full-blown conflict in the beleaguered Palestinian enclave. The exchange of fire, which saw Israel strike dozens of targets in response to the firing of over 100 rockets and mortars at southern Israeli communities by the Hamas and Islamic Jihad terror groups, came after weeks of deadly Hamas-led clashes along the border. But along with other subjects, such as bilateral relations or the rise of anti-Semitism in Europe, it will likely remain overshadowed by Iran.Expectations of any progress on the conflict with the Palestinians are low.Peace prospects remain as distant as ever and the diplomatic process in limbo as the sides wait for a plan long promised by the Trump administration.

EU, China vow to uphold Iran nuclear deal-As signatories scramble to salvage pact after US exit, European foreign policy chief says all parties have 'duty' to implement 2015 accord-By Agencies and TOI staff-JUN 4,18

The European Union and China said they will do their utmost to keep afloat an international agreement to stop Iran developing nuclear weapons despite the US abandoning the pact.Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Friday that “we will be unswerving in upholding it.”Speaking alongside EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini, he said the agreement has been endorsed by the UN and that “every party has the duty to implement it.”Mogherini, who helps oversee the implementation of the 2015 nuclear deal, praised China and said Beijing, the EU and other partners are working “in full coordination” to save the pact.China, Russia and the Western European powers of UK, France, and Germany, all of which signed the 2015 Iran nuclear accord, are scrambling to save the pact following US President Donald Trump’s decision to quit the agreement and reinstate sanctions.Trump faulted the deal for not addressing Iran’s ballistic missile program or support for regional terror groups, while also arguing it brought the Iranians closer to obtaining nuclear weapons. His criticism of the deal has been echoed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who will travel to Germany, France and Britain next week for talks expected to focus on Iran.Beijing, Iran’s top trade partner and one of the biggest buyers of its oil, has signaled that it intends to keep working with the Islamic regime despite the US move.Next week, China’s President Xi Jinping will meet Iran’s Hassan Rouhani on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) meeting on June 9-10 in Qingdao, according to Wang. Russian President Vladimir Putin will also attend the summit. The summit will discuss a three-year action plan to “fight the three evil forces” — terrorism, separatism and extremism — and strengthen cooperation on tackling cybersecurity breaches and drug trafficking, Wang said.China will also push for “reforms to the multilateral trading regime” connecting the markets of SCO members, which account for nearly 40 percent of the global population, he said.Chinese businesses are expected to step up activities in Iran to fill the void left by the exit of US companies and the possible withdrawal of European rivals for fear of punitive measures enforced by the US.

Israeli firefighters battle to contain huge blazes sparked by Gaza fire kites-Three separate blazes rage, destroy hundreds of acres of fields and a nature reserve along the Gaza border-By TOI staff-JUN 4,18

Firefighters were working to put out three large fires along the Gaza Strip border, believed to have been started by  incendiary kites flown from the coastal enclave on Saturday. The largest fire was near to Kibbutz Carmia, adjacent to the northern Gaza Strip. Preliminary estimates suggested that between 2,000 to 3,000 dunam (500 to 740 acres) of fields and parts of a nature reserve adjacent to the kibbutz were destroyed.Officials at the Israel Nature and Parks Authority estimated that at least one third of the Carmia reserve had been destroyed.Residents were working alongside with firefighters to try to contain the fires that have become almost daily occurrences since the start of the “March of Return” protests along the border at the end of March.During the protests, Gazans have been flying kites into Israel outfitted with Molotov cocktails and containers of burning fuel, setting fire to large swaths of land.It has become a widely adopted tactic during the weekly “March of Return” clashes on the Gaza border, which Israel accuses the Hamas terror group of orchestrating as a cover for attacks and attempts to breach the border fence.Firefighters were also working to gain control of a blaze near Kibbutz Be’eri, which borders the central Gaza Strip.Earlier Saturday, an additional fire had broke out in fields belonging to Kibbutz Nir Am also along the northern Gaza Strip. On Thursday, firefighters battled similar brush fires between the Kissufim and Ein Hashlosha kibbutzim that authorities suspect were caused by firebomb-laden kites flown across the security fence by Palestinians.Local residents told Israel Radio they were concerned that they would not be provided compensation for the damage, as the burden for proving they were victims of a terror attack fell on them.Zionist Union MK Eitan Brosh told the radio that lawmakers from his party would tour the area Sunday and work to provide the residents with solutions to their ongoing distress. The violent demonstrations were meant to end on May 15, but Hamas leaders have said they want them to continue. In the past month, at least 300 attack kites have been flown across the border, starting hundreds of fires and causing an estimated tens of millions of shekels’ worth of damages.Military planners have begun implementing new measures to combat the assaults, including options drawn from the IDF’s responses to rocket launches and other terror attacks.

Israel says it won’t recognize Ugandan Jewish community — report-Interior Ministry rules man from Abayudaya cannot immigrate, rolling back recognition from Jewish Agency-By JTA    4 June 2018

Israel has ruled that it will not recognize Uganda’s Jewish community, according to an newspaper report Thursday. The Interior Ministry denied the request of a Ugandan Jew, Kibitz Yosef, to immigrate to Israel, Haaretz reported. The ministry said Yosef, who is staying at a kibbutz in southern Israel, had to leave the country by June 14, according to the report.A representative told Haaretz that the decision represented Israel’s stance on the Ugandan Jewish community, not just the applicant in question. The ministry said Yosef could challenge its decision in the High Court of Justice. The Uganda community, also called the Abayudaya, numbers approximately 2,000 and traces its roots to the early 20th century, when a former leader read the Bible and embraced Judaism. Most members were converted under the auspices of U.S. Conservative rabbis and thus are not recognized as Jewish by Israel’s mostly ultra-Orthodox Chief Rabbinate. In 2016, the Jewish Agency for Israel recognized the community, seemingly opening a path for its members to immigrate to Israel. However, the Abuyudaya have struggled to obtain recognition to do so. In December, Israel denied a visa application by a member of the community to study at a yeshiva in Israel, leading to accusations of racism. This week, the Chief Rabbinate published a list of draft criteria for religious courts in the Diaspora to have its conversions accepted in the Jewish state. If enacted, Jewish converts in America may face additional hurdles in being recognized as Jewish by the Chief Rabbinate, which controls Jewish marriage, divorce, conversion and burial in the Jewish state. However, it does not have authority over who can immigrate to the country.

HOARDING OF GOLD AND SILVER

JAMES 5:1-3
1 Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you.
2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten.
3 Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.

REVELATION 18:10,17,19
10 Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.(IN 1 HR THE STOCK MARKETS WORLDWIDE WILL CRASH)
17 For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off,
19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate.

EZEKIEL 7:19
19 They shall cast their silver in the streets, and their gold shall be removed:(CONFISCATED) their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD: they shall not satisfy their souls, neither fill their bowels: because it is the stumblingblock of their iniquity.

LUKE 2:1-3
1 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.
2  (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)
3  And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.

REVELATION 13:16-18
16 And he(THE FALSE POPE WHO DEFECTED FROM THE CHRISTIAN FAITH) causeth all,(IN THE WORLD ) both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:(MICROCHIP IMPLANT)
17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark,(MICROCHIP IMPLANT) or the name of the beast,(WORLD DICTATORS NAME INGRAVED ON YOUR SKIN OR TATTOOED ON YOU OR IN THE MICROCHIP IMPLANT) or the number of his name.(THE NUMBERS OF HIS NAME INGRAVED IN THE MICROCHIP IMLPLANT)-(ALL THESE WILL TELL THE WORLD DICTATOR THAT YOUR WITH HIM AND AGAINST KING JESUS-GOD)
18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast:(WORLD LEADER) for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.(6-6-6) A NUMBER SYSTEM (6006006)OR(60020202006)(SOME KIND OF NUMBER IMPLANTED IN THE MICROCHIP THAT TELLS THE WORLD DICTATOR AND THE NEW WORLD ORDER THAT YOU GIVE YOUR TOTAL ALLIGIENCE TO HIM AND NOT JESUS)(ITS AN ETERNAL DECISION YOU MAKE)(YOU CHOOSE YOUR OWN DESTINY)(YOU TAKE THE DICTATORS NAME OR NUMBER UNDER YOUR SKIN,YOUR DOOMED TO THE LAKE OF FIRE AND TORMENTS FOREVER,NEVER ENDING MEANT ONLY FOR SATAN AND HIS ANGELS,NOT HUMAN BEINGS).OR YOU REFUSE THE MICROCHIP IMPLANT AND GO ON THE SIDE OF KING JESUS AND RULE FOREVER WITH HIM ON EARTH.YOU CHOOSE,ITS YOUR DECISION.

1 KINGS 10:13-14
13  And king Solomon gave unto the queen of Sheba all her desire, whatsoever she asked, beside that which Solomon gave her of his royal bounty. So she turned and went to her own country, she and her servants.
14  Now the weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year was six hundred threescore and six talents of gold,

GENESIS 49:16-17
16  Dan shall judge his people, as one of the tribes of Israel.
17  Dan shall be a serpent by the way, an adder in the path, that biteth the horse heels, so that his rider shall fall backward.

REVELATION 6:5-6
5 And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand.
6 And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine.(A DAYS WAGES FOR A LOAF OF BREAD)

EARTHQUAKES

EZEKIEL 37:7,11-14
7  So I prophesied as I was commanded: and as I prophesied, there was a noise, and behold a shaking, and the bones came together, bone to his bone.(POSSIBLE QUAKE BRINGS ISRAEL BACK TO LIFE-SO NOISE AND SHAKING-QUAKES WILL ALSO DESTROY ISRAELS ENEMIES)
11  Then he said unto me, Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel: behold, they say, Our bones are dried, and our hope is lost: we are cut off for our parts.
12  Therefore prophesy and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, O my people, I will open your graves, and cause you to come up out of your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel.
13  And ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I have opened your graves, O my people, and brought you up out of your graves,
14  And shall put my spirit in you, and ye shall live, and I shall place you in your own land: then shall ye know that I the LORD have spoken it, and performed it, saith the LORD.

MATTHEW 24:7-8
7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.
8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.

MARK 13:8
8 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom:(ETHNIC GROUP AGAINST ETHNIC GROUP) and there shall be earthquakes in divers places, and there shall be famines and troubles: these are the beginnings of sorrows.

LUKE 21:11
11 And great earthquakes shall be in divers places,(DIFFERNT PLACES AT THE SAME TIME) and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.

After outcry, US ambassador says he is committed to bipartisan support of Israel-Friedman tells Times of Israel the GOP is a better friend of Israel, prompting Jewish Democratic Council of America to accuse him of behavior 'damaging to our national interests'-By TOI staff-JUN 3,18

US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman on Friday defended recent comments he made that Republicans are better friends of Israel, saying he continues to work toward fostering bipartisan support for the Jewish State.“Observing overwhelming Republican support for Israel is not a ‘partisan shot’ as some have described,” Friedman tweeted Friday.“I firmly believe that American support for Israel needs to be bipartisan and I will continue to welcome any Democratic legislators who wish to visit Israel — and I hope they do!” he said. His remarks come after a group of Jewish Democrats on Thursday slammed him for a “politically divisive” and “damaging” interview with The Times of Israel, in which he said Republicans are better friends of Israel.Observing overwhelming Republican support for Israel is not a “partisan shot" as some have described. I firmly believe that American support for Israel needs to be bipartisan and I will continue to welcome any Democratic legislators who wish to visit Israel – and I hope they do!— David M. Friedman (@USAmbIsrael) June 1, 2018-“It is truly unprecedented for a sitting US Ambassador to Israel to engage in explicitly partisan rhetoric and behavior. Ambassador Friedman must remember that he is not the head of the Republican National Committee or the Republican Jewish Coalition political organization,” said former Congressman Ron Klein (D-FL), who chairs the Jewish Democratic Council of America.Klein, who represented Florida’s 22th District between 2006 and 2010, added that Friedman represents all Americans, not only those of one party or those who share his political views.“Ambassador Friedman should spend more time cultivating the historically bipartisan nature of the US-Israel partnership, as opposed to being politically divisive in his words and actions, including his refusal to invite Democratic members of Congress to the Jerusalem embassy opening,” Klein continued. “This type of partisan behavior is damaging to our national interests and must stop immediately.”Speaking to The Times of Israel Wednesday in his brand new office at the US Embassy in Jerusalem, Friedman stressed that maintaining bipartisan support for Israel was very important to him, and vowed to continue working with politicians from both sides of the aisle on strengthening bilateral ties. However, he then went on to argue that the GOP is undeniably better disposed toward the Jewish state than the Democrats.“The argument that I hear from some Democrats that Republicans are seizing the pro-Israel mantle is true, to a certain extent. There’s no question Republicans support Israel more than Democrats,” Friedman said.“What the Democrats are not doing is looking at themselves critically and acknowledging the fact that they have not been able to create support within their constituency for Israel at the same levels that the Republicans have,” he went on.Friedman argued that Democrats may claim to be pro-Israel, but merely saying so doesn’t make it true. Indeed, “there is a large Democratic constituency right now that is not pro-Israel,” the US envoy said. “They have to acknowledge it, and they have to fix it, or try to fix it.”The Jewish Democratic Council of America, whose national board counts about 30 members, seeks to “help elect Democrats supportive of the Jewish community’s domestic policy interests, and support the State of Israel,” Klein told The Times of Israel earlier this year during a visit in Jerusalem. The organization, which replaced the now-defunct National Jewish Democratic Council, serves “as the voice for Jewish Democrats and the socially liberal, pro-Israel values that Jewish voters hold dear,” according to Thursday’s press release.

Russia OKs Israeli strikes on Iranian targets deep inside Syria — report-Arabic daily says deal between Moscow and Jerusalem includes removal of Tehran-backed forces from border area, protection for Syrian army-By TOI staff and Alexander Fulbright-JUN 3,18

Israel and Russia have reached an agreement green-lighting Israeli strikes on Iranian targets in Syria, as well as the withdrawal of Tehran-backed troops from Syria’s border with Israel, according to an Arabic media report Friday.According to the Arabic-language daily Asharq al-Awsat, the agreement will see Iranian forces leave southwestern Syria, while allowing Israel to strike Iranian assets deep in the country. Russia is a main ally of Iran. The reported agreement comes after Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman met his Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu in Moscow on Thursday for talks focused on Syria.Liberman thanked Russia for “understanding” Israel’s security concerns. He is due to meet with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron. He may also call on Prime Minister Theresa May in the UK.

Two Palestinians said injured as minor rioting breaks out on Gaza border-More than 120,000 Palestinians from West Bank travel to Jerusalem for Ramadan prayers at the Al-Aqsa Mosque-By TOI staff-JUN 3,18

The IDF said it fired at two Gazans as they approached the border with Israel on Friday afternoon. The two fled back to Gaza, with Palestinian media reporting they were injured. The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry did not confirm the report.Several media reports said rioting and disturbances had begun at three different sites along the border, but the scale was not immediately clear.  Palestinians threw rocks at soldiers who responded with tear gas.Meanwhile, in the West Bank some 122,000 Palestinians traveled to Jerusalem for Ramadan prayers at the Al-Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount, the army said, while another 8,200 prayed at the Tomb of the Patriarchs in the West Bank city of Hebron. This is the third Friday of the holy month of Ramadan and the number of Palestinians who traveled to the city for Friday afternoon prayers was the largest yet this year, according to army statistics.“IDF troops are deployed in reinforced numbers and are operating along with the Shin Bet, Civil Administration, Border Police and Israel Police in order to allow the Ramadan prayers, as well defending communities and roads and preserving order and security in the area,” the army said. The army also said it was prepared for a renewal of the violent demonstrations on the Gaza border which have become a regular Friday occurrence since March 30 when the Palestinians held their first weekly “March of Return” protest. Israel says the riots are orchestrated by the Hamas terror group, which rules Gaza, and used as cover for attempted terror attacks and breaches of the border fence. The violent demonstrations were initially slated to end by May 15, when the Palestinians mark Nakba Day commemorating the displacement that followed Israel’s Independence War in 1948. But Hamas leaders said they want them to continue. Turnout at the past three weeks’ clashes has been far smaller than in the initial weeks. The border tensions comes following a week that saw the worst escalation of violence between Israel and Hamas since the 2014 war in Gaza. Earlier this week, Palestinian terror groups fired over 100 rockets and mortars at towns and cities in southern Israel. The Israel Defense Forces responded with dozens of airstrikes on Hamas military targets. After almost 24 hours of fire, a tacit understanding and unofficial ceasefire began, though both sides have described it as fragile.A senior army official said Thursday he expected major border protests to resume next week, when the Palestinian mark Naksa Day — the June 5 commemoration by Palestinians of Israel’s victory in the Six Day War. However, he estimated that they would be smaller than those on May 14 and 15, after the opening of the US Embassy in Jerusalem. In the May 14-15 protests, over 60 Palestinians — almost all of them members of the Hamas or Islamic Jihad terror groups — were killed in clashes with the IDF.Israel says its forces have opened fire to stop attempts to harm soldiers, damage the fence, infiltrate Israel and attempt to carry out attacks. Israel accuses Hamas, with which it has fought three wars since 2008, of seeking to use the protests as cover to carry out violence.Israeli officials said that Hamas, which seeks to destroy Israel, was trying to get mobs of Gazans through the fence, including its own gunmen, potentially to carry out attacks inside Israel, and that the IDF’s primary obligation was to ensure that did not happen.Agencies contributed to this report.

Pope to address oil majors in Vatican climate conference-[Reuters]-By Philip Pullella-YAHOONEWS-June 3, 2018

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - The Vatican will host executives of the world's top oil companies for a conference next week on climate change and the transition away from fossil fuels, a Vatican source said on Friday.Pope Francis, who wrote a major document on protection of the environment from global warming in 2015, is expected to address the group on the last day of the June 8-9 conference. The conference, organized by Notre Dame University in the United States, is expected to be attended by the heads or senior executives of companies including ExxonMobil, Eni, BP, Royal Dutch Shell and Pemex, the source said. The chief executive officers of BP and Norway's Equinor will attend the event, the two companies confirmed. The oil and gas industry has come under increasing pressure from investors and activists to play a bigger role in reducing the emissions of greenhouse gases in order to meet goals set out in a 2015 climate agreement signed in Paris.Companies are betting on increased demand for gas, the least polluting fossil fuel and to a lesser extent on renewable power such as wind and solar to meet global targets of net zero emissions by the end of the century. The conference, titled "Energy Transition and Care for Our Common Home", will be held in the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, a 16th century villa in the Vatican gardens known as the Casina Pio IV.In the 2015 encyclical, called "Laudato Si (Praise Be), On the Care of Our Common Home", Francis, the first pope from a developing nation, advocated a change of lifestyle in rich countries steeped in a "throwaway" consumer culture and an end to an "obstructionist attitudes" that sometimes put profit before the common good.In several passages in the six-chapter encyclical, Francis confronted head-on both climate change doubters and those who say it is not man-made.He said there was a "very solid scientific consensus" that the planet was warming and that people had to "combat this warming or at least the human causes which produce or aggravate it" because greenhouse gases were "released mainly as a result of human activity."Francis called for policies to drastically reduce polluting gases, saying technology based on fossil fuels "needs to be progressively replaced without delay" and sources of renewable energy developed. One of the key architects of the pope's encyclical, Cardinal Peter Turkson, head of the Vatican's department on promoting human development and a firm backer of the need to stem global warming, will address the group, the source said.Last year Francis, who strongly supported the Paris agreement on climate change, implicitly criticized the United States for pulling out of the accord. The chancellor of the academy where the conference will be held, Bishop Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo, called the U.S. withdrawal a "huge slap in the face" for the Vatican.(Reporting by Philip Pullella; Additional reporting by Ron Bousso and Nerijus Adomaitis; Editing by Edmund Blair and Adrian Croft)

Japan store bars wine from Golan Heights after protests-'The wine we carry is authorized by the Japanese government, so I don't see why it has to be discriminated against,' says importer-By Mari Yamaguchi-TOI-JUN 3,18

TOKYO (AP) — A major Japanese department store has quietly removed a vendor specializing in wine from Israel’s Golan Heights after protests from pro-Palestinain groups boycotting products from the region.Daimaru store said it withdrew its offer for Naturael, a Tokyo-based importer specializing in wine from the Golan — highly valued among connoisseurs — to participate in a fair in May.Naturael said the wine is produced and imported legally and that Daimaru’s decision could lead to anti-Israel sentiment.Daimaru said the decision did not reflect any political stance and was only for the May 9-15 “Mediterranean gourmet and wine fair” at its Tokyo store. It said wine from elsewhere in Israel was sold at the fair and that Daimaru has no policy against Israeli products in general. But a spokesman acknowledged that Daimaru took into consideration activists’ concerns about the wine’s origin.“Today we cannot ignore geopolitical issues,” said Satoshi Nishio, a spokesman for Daimaru Matsuzakaya Department Stores Co. “We have to start paying more attention to where products are coming from.”Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria in the 1967 Six Day War and annexed it in 1981, a move not recognized by the US and the international community.Israel’s part of the Golan Heights has been largely quiet in recent years, however, the Syrian side has seen heavy fighting as part of the Syrian civil war. Last month Iranian forces on the Syrian side fired a salvo of rockets toward Israel. Some were intercepted, while others fells short. That attack came as Israel is waging a campaign to stop Iran from establishing a permanent presence in Syria and neighboring Lebanon, raising tensions in the region.Naturael CEO Yoshiyuki Hongo said he respects Daimaru’s business decision, but that he regretted the store being targeted by a boycott campaign and sending the wrong message to other retailers.Hongo said wineries he has contracts with in the Golan are there legally under Israeli law, are only devoted to making good wine, and their products are legally imported into Japan.“The wine we carry is all authorized by the Japanese government, so I don’t see why it has to be discriminated against,” said Hongo, who last year started his online store, which also sells olive oil, date syrup and other items from Israel.Hongo said a boycott of one item could lead to more self-restraint in business.“Once you take a political stance in business, it could spread to other areas — not just food but to information and technology systems and many other commercial products. In the end you won’t be able to sell anything,” he said.Another Japanese department store chain, Mitsukoshi, took a similar step at a Tokyo event last year. The decision by Daimaru was welcomed by activists, but was largely unnoticed by ordinary consumers. Hongo says his internet wine sales haven’t been affected.Yoshihiro Yakushige, a member of a pro-Palestinian group, said he and fellow activists are not trying to cause stores to go out of business. “We just want Japanese consumers to think more carefully about where products are coming from,” he said. There is no Palestinian population in the Golan Heights.TOI Staff contributed to this report.

Abbas refused to meet House Democrats in protest at embassy move — report-Though many Democrats opposed the Jerusalem decision, PA says it refused to sit with March delegation because it has suspended ties with entire US government-By TOI staff-JUN 3,18

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas refused to meet with a delegation of Congressional Democrats in March in protest at the decision of US President Donald Trump to move his country’s embassy to Jerusalem, the Haaretz newspaper reported Friday. The delegation of 10 Democrats, many of whom criticized Trump for the Jerusalem decision, visited Israel and Jordan in March and was headed by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. The group held a series of meetings in Israel, including with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US Ambassador David Friedman. The delegation also asked to meet with Abbas in Ramallah, but the request was refused. A PA source told Haaretz that the PA has suspended ties with the entire American government and makes no distinction between parties or the individual views of representatives. The Palestinian source said that Abbas wanted to send a protest message to the delegation that, despite their opposition to the Trump administration, they had not presented a united and consolidated view against Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem and embassy move.He told Haaretz that Abbas knew the delegation included solely Democrats, but felt that the party had given tacit approval to the embassy move.A senior adviser to the Democratic Party told Haaretz that the delegation was divided in its response to Abbas’s snub.“Some of them questioned whether Abbas was ready to move forward with the peace process,” the source said. “If he refuses to meet with Democrats who are not hesitant to criticize Israel, who is he prepared to work with? On the other hand, it showed the Palestinian anger and disappointment towards Trump.”The delegation included representatives Adam Schiff and Jimmy Panetta of California, Rosa DeLauro and Jim Himes of Connecticut, Jan Schakowsky of Illinois, Henry Cueller of Texas, Hakeem Jeffries of New York, Katherine Clark of Massachusetts, Donald McEachin of Virginia and Jamie Raskin of Maryland.Pelosi’s office had said the focus of the trip was “global and regional security and cooperation.” The visit was also to celebrate Israel’s 70th independence celebrations.“There is no greater political accomplishment in the 20th century than the establishment of the State of Israel,” she said in a statement ahead of the trip.“Our delegation is pleased to be able to extend the congratulations of the American people to the people of Israel as we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Jewish state this spring,” the California Democrat added.

Thousands join Kfar Saba’s first-ever Gay Pride Parade-LGBT youth club members organize event after a member is attacked-By TOI staff-JUN 3,18

Over 2,000 residents and guests took part in Kfar Saba’s inaugural Gay Pride Parade on Friday, after stringent security demands were dropped by police. One of the organizers, 18-year-old Noga Fishman, told Ynet news, “The first Gay Pride Parade in Kfar Saba is the biggest thing I’ve ever worked on. I’m happy that I managed, along with my second family, to give pleasure to so many people and to make history.”Marchers walked along the circular kilometer-long route which passed along a main street for 100 meters (320 feet) without any incident. The newest event in the gay pride calendar began as the initiative of a group of 50 LGBT members of a local youth group after one of their transgender friends was attacked. They decided to organize the march to give community members a sense of security and belonging.Kefar Saba had its first ever pride march, and it was a great experience bringing in a few thousands of marchers. The route was cyclical but otherwise it was a great day and a fantastic first march.Posted by Assaf Shtilman on Friday, 1 June 2018-When the organizers asked for a police permit to hold the parade they were told they must put up two-meter-high barricades along the route and hire buses to close the streets, which would have cost about NIS 24,000.The organizers petitioned the High Court, saying that the unreasonable financial burden unlawfully violated their right to freedom of expression and protest. Additionally, they claimed that it was the duty of the police to provide protection to the participants, and thus it was the police that should bear the costs of securing the event. Two days after the petition was presented to the court, police walked back their initial demands and said that the march could go ahead without barriers and that police would bear the responsibility and cost of ensuring the safety of the participants.Eight other cities have pride parades in the coming weeks. The Tel Aviv parade will be held on June 8. In Haifa there will be a parade on June 22; in Beersheba on June 28; in Rishon Lezion on June 29; in Ashdod on July 6; in Hadera on July 13; in Rehovot on July 19, and in Jerusalem on August 2.

Proposal on Palestinians heads to UN Security Council-[Associated Press]-JENNIFER PELTZ-YAHOONEWS-June 3, 2018

NEW YORK (AP) — The U.N. Security Council was headed Friday toward a vote — and a likely U.S. veto — on a resolution that asks the secretary-general to propose ways to ensure "international protection" for Palestinian civilians. The council set an afternoon meeting on the Arab-backed resolution after weeks of urgent discussions about the escalation of violence in Gaza in the last two months.U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley vowed Thursday to veto Kuwait's resolution as drafted. She called it "grossly one-sided and morally bankrupt" for not mentioning Hamas, the militant group that controls Gaza.A council diplomat tells The Associated Press the U.S. also has proposed extensive amendments that would condemn Hamas? for its role in the recent violence. The diplomat spoke on condition of anonymity because the discussions were private. It's not clear whether the amendments have the votes to pass. The Security Council has been deeply divided and paralyzed over dealing with the decades-old Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the burst of violence in Gaza.In two months of mass protests at the Gaza border, some 110 Palestinians were killed and thousands wounded by Israeli military fire. Israel said its troops were defending its border and accused Hamas of trying to attack under the cover of the protest.Hamas and a smaller Islamic militant group bombarded southern Israel with rockets and mortars Tuesday, and Israel responded by striking targets throughout Gaza. Hamas said Wednesday it had agreed to a cease-fire with Israel. The Kuwaiti draft resolution expresses "grave concern" at the increased violence and deteriorating situation in the Palestinian territories and calls for urgent steps to ensure a "durable and fully respected cease-fire."It asks U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for a written report within 60 days on ways to ensure "the safety, protection and well-being of the Palestinian civilian population under Israeli occupation," including recommendations about "an international protection mechanism." The measure also urges humanitarian access and seeks "tangible steps" toward reconciliation between different Palestinian factions.Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon called the draft biased and "not worthy of consideration by the Security Council." Neither Israel nor the Palestinians are members of the council. At Kuwait's request, the council has held multiple emergency meetings on the border clashes. The U.S. called an emergency session Wednesday on the barrage of rockets and mortars the day prior.Israel and Hamas are bitter enemies and have fought three wars since the Islamic group seized control of Gaza in 2007.

HONOLULU (Reuters) - The Hawaii community hardest hit by the Kilauea Volcano was ordered sealed off under a strict new mandatory evacuation on Thursday as the eruption marked its fourth week with no end in sight. The Big Island's mayor, Harry Kim, declared a roughly 17-block swath of the lava-stricken Leilani Estates subdivision off-limits indefinitely and gave any residents remaining there 24 hours to leave or face possible arrest. The mandatory evacuation zone lies within a slightly larger area that was already under a voluntary evacuation and curfew. The latest order was announced a day after police arrested a 62-year-old Leilani Estates resident who fired a handgun over the head of a younger man from the same community, apparently believing his neighbor was an intruder or looter. The confrontation on Tuesday was recorded on cell phone video that later went viral. But the mandatory evacuation was "decided prior to that incident," said David Mace, a spokesman for the Federal Emergency Management Agency currently assigned to the Hawaii County Civil Defense authority.Civil defense officials have previously said about 2,000 residents in and around Leilani Estates were displaced at the outset of the current eruption, which began on May 3.But the total number of evacuees was estimated to have risen to about 2,500 after authorities ushered residents from the nearby Kapoho area as a precaution on Wednesday, as a lava flow threatened to cut off a key access road.At least 75 homes -- most of them in Leilani Estates -- have been devoured by streams of red-hot molten rock creeping from about two dozen large volcanic vents, or fissures, that have opened in the ground since Kilauea rumbled back to life four weeks ago. Lava flows also have knocked out power and telephone lines in the region, disrupting communications.Besides spouting fountains of lava around the clock, the fissures have released high levels of toxic sulfur dioxide gas on a near constant basis, posing an ongoing health hazard. Meanwhile, the main summit crater has periodically erupted in clouds of volcanic ash that create breathing difficulties and other problems for residents living downwind. The heightened volcanic activity has been accompanied by frequent earthquakes, as magma -- the term for lava before it reaches the surface -- pushes its way up from deep inside the earth and exerts tremendous force underground. After a month of continual eruptions at Kilauea's summit and along its eastern flank, geologists say they have no idea how much longer it will last."There's no sign we're getting that anything is going to slow down at the moment," Wendy STOVL, a vulcanologist for the U.S. Geological Survey, told reporters on a conference call on Thursday. "We don't see any changes occurring."The island's mayor on Wednesday renewed an emergency proclamation for 60 more days, allowing construction of temporary shelters and other relief projects to proceed on an expedited basis, without reviews and permits normally required. The month-old eruption of Kilauea, one of the world's most active volcanoes, followed an eruption cycle that had continued almost nonstop for 35 years.Stovall said geologists now believe the latest upheaval should be classified as a separate volcanic event, though an official determination has yet to be made.(Reporting by Jolyn Rosa; Additonal reporting and writing by Steve Gorman in Los Angeles; Editing by Sandra Maler)

THE FIRST JUDGEMENT OF THE EARTH STARTED WITH WATER-IT ONLY MAKES SENSE THE LAST GENERATION WILL BE HAVING FLOODING
GENESIS 7:6-12
6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.
8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,
9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.
10 And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.
GOD PROMISED BY A RAINBOW-THE EARTH WOULD NEVER BE DESTROYED TOTALLY WITH A FLOOD AGAIN.BUT FLOODIING IS A SIGN OF JUDGEMENT.

Ailing weather satellite produces sharp snapshot of Earth-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-JUN 3,18

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — Despite a serious cooling problem, the newest U.S. weather satellite has produced a sharp snapshot of Earth. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released the GOES-17 satellite's first image Thursday. It shows the Western Hemisphere in detail from 22,000 miles up.Last week, NOAA reported that critical infrared sensors in the satellite's main instrument were not staying cold enough. The picture taken May 20 and released Thursday relied mostly on the few unaffected channels in the visible light and near infrared.NASA launched GOES-17 in March. The problem with the satellite's advanced imager cropped up during routine testing several weeks after liftoff. A special team is investigating the issue. An identical imager, also made by the Florida-based Harris Corp., is working fine on the 2016-launched GOES-16.Marcia Dunn, The Associated Press.

Former GOP House leader Boehner says it’s Trump’s party now-US president's longtime golf partner says 'Republican Party is kind of taking a nap somewhere'-By AP-JUN 3,18-TOI

WASHINGTON — Former House Speaker John Boehner says there is no Republican Party anymore — but there is the party of US President Donald Trump.Boehner was asked about the GOP Thursday at a policy conference in Michigan. He replied: “There is no Republican Party. There’s a Trump Party.”He added, “The Republican Party is kind of taking a nap somewhere.”The former speaker is friendly with the president — the two have played a lot of golf together — and counted Trump as a supporter. But Boehner says he didn’t expect Trump to become president. The Ohio Republican comes from the establishment wing of the GOP. He abruptly retired from the House in 2015 amid resistance from a conservative flank of House Republicans who challenged his leadership as speaker.

Spain’s conservative government falls, Socialist opposition leader takes power-After Mariano Rajoy loses no-confidence motion over kickbacks-for-contracts scheme, Pedro Sanchez set to replace him-By Aritz Parra-TOI-JUN 3,18

MADRID (AP) — Socialist party leader Pedro Sanchez is set to become Spain’s new prime minister after a no-confidence vote in parliament Friday unseated Mariano Rajoy’s conservative government.Sanchez, the leader of the largest opposition party, could be sworn in as early as Saturday and appoint his cabinet next week.To prevent a power vacuum after a no-confidence motion, Spanish law makes the motion’s author — in this case, Sanchez — the country’s new leader as soon as the king swears him in.The end of Rajoy’s more than six-year reign as Spanish prime minister was the first ouster of a serving leader by parliament in four decades of democracy.Rajoy went to shake hands with Sanchez after the result was announced. The reputation of Rajoy’s Popular Party’s was badly damaged by a court verdict last week that identified it as a beneficiary of a large kickbacks-for-contracts scheme.Sanchez saw that as his opening and managed to muster enough support from smaller parties to send him to La Moncloa palace, the seat of government in Madrid.Sanchez, 46, takes the helm of the 19-country eurozone’s fourth-largest economy at a time when the European Union faces numerous challenges, including the United Kingdom’s departure from the bloc and migrants continuing to enter the continent from North Africa.Sanchez and his party are staunch supporters of the EU and the continent’s shared currency. The Madrid stock exchange was up nearly 1.6 percent after Sanchez won the vote, earning a standing ovation from his party’s lawmakers.Sanchez, who will be Spain’s seventh prime minister since the country’s return to democracy in the late 1970s, arrives in power after a spectacular turnaround in his political fortunes. He was ousted by his own party’s heavyweights in 2016 over back-to-back losses in general elections and after he tried to block Rajoy’s bid to form a government. The former economics professor regained the Socialists’ leadership last year. The incoming prime minister has outlined that his priorities will be social issues before calling elections, though he hasn’t said when there might be a vote.He faces a tough time, however, catering to demands from small nationalist parties whose votes he captured in the no-confidence motion. The support of leftist and nationalist parties for ousting Rajoy won’t necessarily lead to parliamentary backing for Sanchez’s government and could produce a political stalemate.

Letter to spouse applying for permanent residency 'offensive,' Kwan says-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-June 3, 2018

OTTAWA — A letter sent by a Canadian immigration officer to a couple questioning the legitimacy of their marriage includes language that an NDP MP says is "offensive and insulting."Federal NDP immigration critic Jenny Kwan has asked Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen to look into what she calls a systemic problem with the way Hussen's department is treating applications under the spousal sponsorship program."To me, it's completely inappropriate and I think it's offensive and insulting," Kwan said."I would like for the government to look at the systemic issue of this letter and why such letters are being sent out through those spousal sponsorship applications."The letter, from a Canadian immigration officer based in London, England, to a female applicant from Pakistan, says her permanent residency application appears suspect for a number of reasons — including that she is three years older than her husband, a Canadian citizen who has lived in Canada since 2005."You and your sponsor (husband) do not appear well matched," the letter states, a copy of which was provided to The Canadian Press."You are three years older than him, he comes from a town four hours from where you live and you are not related, so it is unclear to me why the match was made."It is unusual for Pakistani men to marry older women, especially if they are not related, the unnamed immigration officer writes. The officer also notes their wedding guest list of 123 people was small compared to traditional Pakistani weddings."This apparent deviation from the cultural norm raises concerns that your wedding may have taken place in order for you to gain permanent residence in Canada."Kwan said she followed up with the department, only to find letters with such language are routinely sent to spousal sponsorship applicants from Pakistan to "'tease out a response.'""Who are they judge whether or not that marriage is well-matched?" Kwan said."It's one thing to say, 'I do not believe in the authenticity of this marriage,' it's another to make a judgment on the quality of the marriage.... I find that offensive."Kwan raised the issue in question period this week and again with Hussen during a Commons committee meeting Thursday, asking for the government to review its treatment of spousal applicants.Prime Minister Justin Trudeau defended the program during question period, saying he was pleased his government has reduced a backlog of applications under spousal sponsorship and has also reduced waiting times from two years to 12 months."We also know there is more to do," Trudeau said.Improvements to the program have been made, and scrutinizing spousal sponsorship applications is an important part of the work of his department, Hussen added."Our department continues to uphold measures to safeguard against marriage fraud and other program integrity risks."Indeed, it's not uncommon for the immigration minister to become involved in cases involving spousal sponsorship that go before the courts.Last week, a Federal Court judge rejected a judicial review application from Hussen's office in a spousal case that was initially rejected and then won on appeal. The office felt there was evidence contradicting the wife's claim that her marriage to a Nigerian man in 2014 was legitimate.— Follow @ReporterTeresa on Twitter -Teresa Wright, The Canadian Press.Note to readers: This is a corrected story. Assad raises prospect of clashes with U.S. forces in Syria-[Reuters]-By Tom Perry-YAHOONEWS-JUN 3,18

BEIRUT (Reuters) - President Bashar al-Assad raised the possibility of conflict with U.S. forces in Syria if they do not withdraw from the country soon.In an interview with Russia's RT international broadcaster, Assad said he would negotiate with fighters backed on the ground by Washington, but would reclaim territory they control by force if necessary, whether or not American troops supported them.In Washington, the State Department said it was not looking to fight Syrian or Iranian forces, but would use "necessary and proportionate force" to defend U.S. and partner forces in the fight against Islamic State in Syria."The U.S.-led global coalition remains committed to focusing on the defeat-ISIS mission in Syria and does not seek to fight the government of Syria or Iran, or Iranian-supported groups, in Syria," a State Department official told Reuters."However, as we have said in the past, if attacked we will not hesitate to use necessary and proportionate force to defend U.S., coalition, or partner forces engaged in operations to defeat ISIS," the official added. In the RT interview Assad also responded sharply to U.S. President Donald Trump's description of him as an animal, saying "what you say is what you are".Assad, who is backed by Russia and Iran, appears militarily unassailable in the war that has killed an estimated half a million people, uprooted around 6 million people in the country, and driven another 5 million abroad as refugees.Around 2,000 U.S. special forces troops are believed to be on the ground in Syria, where they have aided a group called the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which is led by the YPG, a Kurdish militia. The U.S.-backed group holds the largest area of Syrian territory outside government control, but has tried to avoid direct clashes with the government during the multi-sided war.Assad said the government had "started now opening doors for negotiations" with the SDF."This is the first option. If not, we're going to resort to ... liberating those areas by force. We don't have any other options, with the Americans or without the Americans," he said in the text of an interview published by Syria's state news agency."The Americans should leave, somehow they're going to leave," he said, adding that Washington should learn the lesson of its war in Iraq, which lasted longer and was much costlier than anticipated."They came to Iraq with no legal basis, and look what happened to them. They have to learn the lesson. Iraq is no exception, and Syria is no exception. People will not accept foreigners in this region anymore," he said.Trump said in April he wanted to withdraw American troops from Syria relatively soon, but also voiced a desire to leave a "strong and lasting footprint".U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said on April 30 the United States and its allies would not want to pull troops out of Syria before diplomats win the peace.Kino Gabriel, a spokesman for the SDF, said in response to Assad's comments that a military solution would "lead to more losses and destruction and difficulties for the Syrian people".The SDF wants a "democratic system based on diversity, equality, freedom and justice" for all the country's ethnic and religious groups, he added in a voice message to Reuters.-WHAT YOU SAY IS WHAT YOU ARE-Trump called Assad an "animal" after a suspected poison gas attack on a rebel-held town near Damascus in April. Medical aid organizations said the attack killed dozens of people. The attack triggered U.S., French and British missile strikes against what the countries called chemical weapons targets, the first coordinated Western strikes against Assad's government of the war. But the Western retaliation had no impact on the wider conflict, in which Assad's forces continued their advances. In his interview, Assad reiterated the government's denial of blame for the chemical attack. Asked if he had a nickname for Trump similar to the "animal" comment, Assad replied: "This is not my language, so I cannot use similar language. This is his language. It represents him, and I think there is a well-known principle, that what you say is what you are."Assad also sought in his interview to minimize the extent of Iran's presence in Syria. Israel, which is deeply alarmed by Tehran's influence in Syria, said it destroyed dozens of Iranian military sites in Syria in May, after Iranian forces in Syria fired rockets at Israeli-held territory for the first time.Assad said Iran's presence in Syria was limited to officers assisting the army. Apparently referring to the May 10 attack by Israel, Assad said: "We had tens of Syrian martyrs and wounded soldiers, not a single Iranian" casualty."Asked if there was anything Syria could do to stop Israeli air strikes, he said the only option was to improve air defenses, "and we are doing that". Syria's air defenses were much stronger than before, thanks to Russia, he added.(Additional reporting by Lesley Wroughton in Washington. Writing by Tom Perry; Editing by Peter Graff and Tom Brown)

5 dead, nearly 200 sickened in romaine lettuce outbreak-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-June 3, 2018

NEW YORK — Four more deaths have been linked to a national food poisoning outbreak blamed on tainted lettuce, bringing the total to five.Health officials have tied the E. coli outbreak to romaine lettuce grown in Yuma, Arizona. The growing season there ended six weeks ago, and it's unlikely any tainted lettuce is still in stores or people's homes, given its short shelf life. But there can be a lag in reporting, and reports of illnesses have continued to come in.In an update Friday on the nation's largest E. coli outbreak in a decade, health officials said 25 more cases have been added, raising the total number of illnesses to 197 in 35 states. At least 89 people were hospitalized.Previously one death had been reported, in California. On Friday, health officials said they had learned of four more — one in Arkansas, one in New York, and two in Minnesota. The first illnesses occurred in March, and the most recent began on May 12, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Many of the new cases were people who became ill two to three weeks ago, when contaminated lettuce was still being sold. Some said they did not eat romaine lettuce but were in close contact with someone who got sick after eating it.Most E. coli bacteria are not harmful, but some produce toxins that can cause severe illness. People who get sick from toxin-producing E. coli come down with symptoms about three to four days after swallowing the germ, with many suffering bloody diarrhea, severe stomach cramps and vomiting. Most people recover within a week, but some illnesses can last longer and be more severe.___The Associated Press Health & Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute's Department of Science Education.
