Israel and Russia have reached an agreement green-lighting Israeli strikes on Iranian targets in Syria, as well as the withdrawal of Tehran-backed troops from Syria’s border with Israel, according to an Arabic media report Friday.According to the Arabic-language daily Asharq al-Awsat, the agreement will see Iranian forces leave southwestern Syria, while allowing Israel to strike Iranian assets deep in the country. Israel agreed not to attack Syrian regime targets, the report said.A Russian source told Asharq al-Awsat that Russia was tight-lipped about the agreement to maintain “balance” in its diplomatic ties with Israel and Iran.Israel has repeatedly vowed to prevent Iran establishing a permanent presence in Syria and Lebanon and has carried out dozens of air strikes against Iran-backed forces and attempts to smuggle advanced weapons to Hezbollah.“Russia is somehow embarrassed because the talks with the Israelis mainly focused on a plan to remove Iran and its forces from southern Syria,” the source told the paper. Russia is a main ally of Iran.The reported agreement comes after Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman met his Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu in Moscow on Thursday for talks focused on Syria.Liberman thanked Russia for “understanding” Israel’s security concerns. The IDF said it fired at two Gazans as they approached the border with Israel on Friday afternoon. The two fled back to Gaza, with Palestinian media reporting they were injured. The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry did not confirm the report.Several media reports said rioting and disturbances had begun at three different sites along the border, but the scale was not immediately clear. Palestinians threw rocks at soldiers who responded with tear gas.Meanwhile, in the West Bank some 122,000 Palestinians traveled to Jerusalem for Ramadan prayers at the Al-Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount, the army said, while another 8,200 prayed at the Tomb of the Patriarchs in the West Bank city of Hebron.This is the third Friday of the holy month of Ramadan and the number of Palestinians who traveled to the city for Friday afternoon prayers was the largest yet this year, according to army statistics.“IDF troops are deployed in reinforced numbers and are operating along with the Shin Bet, Civil Administration, Border Police and Israel Police in order to allow the Ramadan prayers, as well defending communities and roads and preserving order and security in the area,” the army said.The army also said it was prepared for a renewal of the violent demonstrations on the Gaza border which have become a regular Friday occurrence since March 30 when the Palestinians held their first weekly “March of Return” protest. Israel says the riots are orchestrated by the Hamas terror group, which rules Gaza, and used as cover for attempted terror attacks and breaches of the border fence.The violent demonstrations were initially slated to end by May 15, when the Palestinians mark Nakba Day commemorating the displacement that followed Israel’s Independence War in 1948. But Hamas leaders said they want them to continue. TOKYO (AP) — A major Japanese department store has quietly removed a vendor specializing in wine from Israel’s Golan Heights after protests from pro-Palestinain groups boycotting products from the region.Daimaru store said it withdrew its offer for Naturael, a Tokyo-based importer specializing in wine from the Golan — highly valued among connoisseurs — to participate in a fair in May.Naturael said the wine is produced and imported legally and that Daimaru’s decision could lead to anti-Israel sentiment.Daimaru said the decision did not reflect any political stance and was only for the May 9-15 “Mediterranean gourmet and wine fair” at its Tokyo store. It said wine from elsewhere in Israel was sold at the fair and that Daimaru has no policy against Israeli products in general.But a spokesman acknowledged that Daimaru took into consideration activists’ concerns about the wine’s origin.“Today we cannot ignore geopolitical issues,” said Satoshi Nishio, a spokesman for Daimaru Matsuzakaya Department Stores Co. “We have to start paying more attention to where products are coming from.”Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria in the 1967 Six Day War and annexed it in 1981, a move not recognized by the US and the international community.Israel’s part of the Golan Heights has been largely quiet in recent years, however, the Syrian side has seen heavy fighting as part of the Syrian civil war. Last month Iranian forces on the Syrian side fired a salvo of rockets toward Israel. Some were intercepted, while others fells short.That attack came as Israel is waging a campaign to stop Iran from establishing a permanent presence in Syria and neighboring Lebanon, raising tensions in the region.Naturael CEO Yoshiyuki Hongo said he respects Daimaru’s business decision, but that he regretted the store being targeted by a boycott campaign and sending the wrong message to other retailers.Hongo said wineries he has contracts with in the Golan are there legally under Israeli law, are only devoted to making good wine, and their products are legally imported into Japan.“The wine we carry is all authorized by the Japanese government, so I don’t see why it has to be discriminated against,” said Hongo, who last year started his online store, which also sells olive oil, date syrup and other items from Israel.Hongo said a boycott of one item could lead to more self-restraint in business.“Once you take a political stance in business, it could spread to other areas — not just food but to information and technology systems and many other commercial products. In the end you won’t be able to sell anything,” he said.Another Japanese department store chain, Mitsukoshi, took a similar step at a Tokyo event last year.The decision by Daimaru was welcomed by activists, but was largely unnoticed by ordinary consumers. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas refused to meet with a delegation of Congressional Democrats in March in protest at the decision of US President Donald Trump to move his country’s embassy to Jerusalem, the Haaretz newspaper reported Friday.The delegation of 10 Democrats, many of whom criticized Trump for the Jerusalem decision, visited Israel and Jordan in March and was headed by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.The group held a series of meetings in Israel, including with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US Ambassador David Friedman.The delegation also asked to meet with Abbas in Ramallah, but the request was refused. A PA source told Haaretz that the PA has suspended ties with the entire American government and makes no distinction between parties or the individual views of representatives.The Palestinian source said that Abbas wanted to send a protest message to the delegation that, despite their opposition to the Trump administration, they had not presented a united and consolidated view against Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem and embassy move.He told Haaretz that Abbas knew the delegation included solely Democrats, but felt that the party had given tacit approval to the embassy move.A senior adviser to the Democratic Party told Haaretz that the delegation was divided in its response to Abbas’s snub.“Some of them questioned whether Abbas was ready to move forward with the peace process,” the source said. “If he refuses to meet with Democrats who are not hesitant to criticize Israel, who is he prepared to work with? Over 2,000 residents and guests took part in Kfar Saba’s inaugural Gay Pride Parade on Friday, after stringent security demands were dropped by police.One of the organizers, 18-year-old Noga Fishman, told Ynet news, “The first Gay Pride Parade in Kfar Saba is the biggest thing I’ve ever worked on. I’m happy that I managed, along with my second family, to give pleasure to so many people and to make history.”Marchers walked along the circular kilometer-long route which passed along a main street for 100 meters (320 feet) without any incident.The newest event in the gay pride calendar began as the initiative of a group of 50 LGBT members of a local youth group after one of their transgender friends was attacked. They decided to organize the march to give community members a sense of security and belonging.Kefar Saba had its first ever pride march, and it was a great experience bringing in a few thousands of marchers. Additionally, they claimed that it was the duty of the police to provide protection to the participants, and thus it was the police that should bear the costs of securing the event.Two days after the petition was presented to the court, police walked back their initial demands and said that the march could go ahead without barriers and that police would bear the responsibility and cost of ensuring the safety of the participants.Eight other cities have pride parades in the coming weeks. The Tel Aviv parade will be held on June 8. HONOLULU (Reuters) - The Hawaii community hardest hit by the Kilauea Volcano was ordered sealed off under a strict new mandatory evacuation on Thursday as the eruption marked its fourth week with no end in sight.The Big Island's mayor, Harry Kim, declared a roughly 17-block swath of the lava-stricken Leilani Estates subdivision off-limits indefinitely and gave any residents remaining there 24 hours to leave or face possible arrest.The mandatory evacuation zone lies within a slightly larger area that was already under a voluntary evacuation and curfew.The latest order was announced a day after police arrested a 62-year-old Leilani Estates resident who fired a handgun over the head of a younger man from the same community, apparently believing his neighbor was an intruder or looter.The confrontation on Tuesday was recorded on cell phone video that later went viral.But the mandatory evacuation was "decided prior to that incident," said David Mace, a spokesman for the Federal Emergency Management Agency currently assigned to the Hawaii County Civil Defense authority.Civil defense officials have previously said about 2,000 residents in and around Leilani Estates were displaced at the outset of the current eruption, which began on May 3.But the total number of evacuees was estimated to have risen to about 2,500 after authorities ushered residents from the nearby Kapoho area as a precaution on Wednesday, as a lava flow threatened to cut off a key access road.At least 75 homes -- most of them in Leilani Estates -- have been devoured by streams of red-hot molten rock creeping from about two dozen large volcanic vents, or fissures, that have opened in the ground since Kilauea rumbled back to life four weeks ago. The problem with the satellite's advanced imager cropped up during routine testing several weeks after liftoff. NEW YORK — Four more deaths have been linked to a national food poisoning outbreak blamed on tainted lettuce, bringing the total to five.Health officials have tied the E. coli outbreak to romaine lettuce grown in Yuma, Arizona. The growing season there ended six weeks ago, and it's unlikely any tainted lettuce is still in stores or people's homes, given its short shelf life. But there can be a lag in reporting, and reports of illnesses have continued to come in.In an update Friday on the nation's largest E. coli outbreak in a decade, health officials said 25 more cases have been added, raising the total number of illnesses to 197 in 35 states. At least 89 people were hospitalized.Previously one death had been reported, in California. On Friday, health officials said they had learned of four more — one in Arkansas, one in New York, and two in Minnesota.The first illnesses occurred in March, and the most recent began on May 12, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.Many of the new cases were people who became ill two to three weeks ago, when contaminated lettuce was still being sold. Some said they did not eat romaine lettuce but were in close contact with someone who got sick after eating it.Most E. coli bacteria are not harmful, but some produce toxins that can cause severe illness.
