ZAGREB (Reuters) - Croatian police said on Wednesday they had arrested a 19-year old man they suspect of being behind an illegal internet service for cyber attacks called Webstresser.org.A police statement said the site allowed users to pay for so-called Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, which would shut down or slow websites by flooding them with data.Webstresser.org had 136,000 registered users and recorded four million cyber attacks by April this year, the statement said. The targets included online services of banks, businesses and public institutions across the globe.Any user could buy access to online DDoS infrastructure for a price starting at 15 euros, police said.Britain's National Crime Agency said seven of the biggest British banks had been victims of attacks using the Webstresser service in November 2017, forcing them to reduce operations or shut down entire systems and incurring costs in the hundreds of thousands of pounds to get services back up and running.The NCA did not name the institutions involved, but the Financial Times said they were Santander, Tesco Bank, RBS, Lloyds, HSBC, Clydesdale and Yorkshire Banking Group and Barclays.The arrested Croat will be charged for criminal acts against computer systems. MOLKINO, Russia (Reuters) - The Kremlin says it has nothing to do with Russian civilians fighting in Syria but on three recent occasions groups of men flying in from Damascus headed straight to a defense ministry base in Molkino, Reuters reporters witnessed.Molkino in southwestern Russia is where the Russian 10th Special Forces Brigade is based, according to information on the Kremlin website.The destination of the Russians arriving from Syria provides rare evidence of a covert Russian mission in Syria beyond the air strikes, training of Syrian forces and small numbers of special forces troops acknowledged by Moscow.Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Feb. 14 Russians may be in Syria but "they are not part of the armed forces of the Russian Federation". He referred Reuters to the defense ministry when asked why civilians fighting in Syria return to a military base. The ministry did not immediately respond.A duty officer at the 10th special forces brigade, asked why non-military people were entering the military base, said: "Nobody enters it, as far as I am aware ... You’ve seen them, okay. But you should not believe everything ... You can maybe. But how can we comment on what other organizations do?"More than 2,000 Russian contractors are fighting to help Syrian forces recapture land from their opponents, several sources, including one contractor, have said.The contractors are transferred by Syrian airline Cham Wings, the sources said.Reuters reporters saw a Syrian Cham Wings charter flight from Damascus land at the civilian airport in Rostov-on-Don on April 17 and watched groups of men leave the terminal through an exit separate from the one used by ordinary passengers.They boarded three buses, which took them to an area mainly used by airport staff. A luggage carrier brought numerous oversized bags and the men, dressed in civilian clothes, got off the buses, loaded the bags and got back on.The three buses then left the airport in convoy and headed south; two made stops near cafes along the way and one on the roadside. All three reached the village of Molkino, 350 km (220 miles) south, shortly before midnight.In the village, each bus paused for a minute or two at a checkpoint manned by at least two servicemen, before driving on. About 15-20 minutes later the buses drove back through the checkpoint empty. Publicly available satellite maps show the road leads to the military facility.EXCURSION? BEIJING (AP) — A study by Chinese geologists shows the mountain above North Korea's main nuclear test site has collapsed under the stress of the explosions, rendering it unsafe for further testing and necessitating monitoring for any leaking radiation.The findings by the scientists at the University of Science and Technology of China may shed new light on North Korean President Kim Jong Un's announcement that his country was ceasing its testing program.Nuclear explosions release enormous amounts of heat and energy, and the North's largest test in September was believed early on to have rendered the site in northeastern North Korea unstable.The data in the latest Chinese study was collected following the most powerful of the North's six nuclear device tests on Sept. 3 that is believed to have triggered four earthquakes over the following weeks. The yield of the bomb was estimated at more than 100 kilotons of TNT, at least 10 times stronger than anything the North had tested previously. (The bomb the United States dropped on Hiroshima in 1945 had a yield of about 15 kilotons.) The University of Science and Technology of China paper, authored by Tian Dongdong, Yao Jiawen and Wen Lianxing, said the first of those earthquakes that occurred eight-and-a-half minutes after the explosion was "an onsite collapse toward the nuclear test center," while those that followed were an "earthquake swarm" in similar locations."In view of the research finding that the North Korea nuclear test site at Mantapsan has collapsed, it is necessary to continue to monitor any leakage of radioactive materials that may have been caused by the collapse," the authors said in a summary dated Monday and viewed Wednesday on the university's website.The study is peer-reviewed and has been accepted for publication by the journal Geophysical Research Letters.The Chinese study makes sense and is based on well understood research, said Rowena Lohman, a seismologist at Cornell University who wasn't part of the work. She said she believes there's an international effort that monitors these tests for radiation.A study published last month by the journal, authored by a team led by Liu Junqing at the earthquake bureau in Jilin province along the border with North Korea, found similar results of the Sept. 3 explosion. It described the aftershock that followed seconds later as most likely the "rapid destruction of an explosion-generated cracked rock chimney due to cavity collapse."North Korea's nuclear tests are of special concern to Beijing, since the test site near the town of Kilju is less than 100 kilometers (60 miles) from the border with China.North Korean nuclear tests have caused seismic events in Chinese border towns and cities, forcing evacuations of schools and offices, sparking fears of wind-born radiation and leading to a backlash among some Chinese against their country's unpredictable traditional ally. Chinese authorities have said they've detected no radiation risk from the tests.Ties between the sides have been deteriorating for years, although Kim made a long-anticipated visit to Beijing last month after China's implementation of United Nations economic sanctions reduced trade between them by as much as 90 percent.The quakes that followed the September test were not man-made and didn't appear to cause any damage in the area. They included a grandmother who was an avid sports fan, and a woman who volunteered to build houses in the Dominican Republic.Several victims have not been identified. Seneca College said one of its female students was killed, but declined to identify her, citing privacy reasons. Two South Koreans were among the dead, Yonhap News Agency reported, citing government officials.A look at the victims who have been identified: ANNE MARIE D'AMICO-D'Amico, 30, worked at Invesco, an investment management firm near the attack. Toronto City Councilor Cesar Palacio, who knows D'Amico's family, identified her as a victim.D'Amico volunteered at Canada-based international humanitarian charity Live Different. She helped build houses in the Dominican Republic in 2015 and 2017, according to Dave Hamilton, the charity's manager of school partnerships.She was "always up for a challenge and really wanted to help people out," he said.Brodie MacDonald, a friend of D'Amico's, posted a video on Facebook of her playing baseball in the Dominican Republic and wrote that her love of the game is what brought them close."I am so angry at the world today and I am so sorry that this happened to you and as tears roll down my face thinking about the incredible person that you were, please know that you made a difference in so many peoples' lives," he wrote.D'Amico also volunteered with the nonprofit Tennis Canada association, working at the Rogers Cup tournament since the age of 12. A statement from the Prime Minister’s Office welcomed the “Romanian government’s approval of a draft decision on initiating the transfer of the Romanian Embassy to Jerusalem.”The PMO said the two “discussed bilateral issues, strengthening cooperation and the holding of joint projects in — inter alia — security, health, technology and cyber defense.”Dancila and Netanyahu also agreed to hold a meeting between Israeli and Romanian ministers in Romania “in the coming months,” it added.Dancila visited the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial museum after meeting Netanyahu. WASHINGTON — Donald Trump may well pull out of the Iran nuclear deal for domestic political reasons, French President Emmanuel Macron said Wednesday, after he and his American counterpart held talks addressing the agreement’s future.Near the end of his three-day state visit, Macron told US media that while he did not know specifically what Trump will decide, he believes the US leader “will get rid of this deal on his own, for domestic reasons.”Trump — a fierce opponent of the July 2015 agreement signed by Tehran and international powers — must declare by May 12 if he will essentially walk away from the existing deal when the renewal deadline arrives on May 12, or stay in.Macron had come to Washington in part to plead for a more comprehensive “new agreement” that would address what he and Trump believe to be shortcomings of the existing accord.Trump has branded the Iran deal “insane” and the “worst” in history.“I have no inside information” on what decision Trump will make on the agreement, Macron told journalists.But “I listen to what President Trump is saying and it seems to me that he is not very eager to defend it.”Macron recalled that Trump made killing the Iran nuclear accord a campaign pledge during his 2016 presidential run.“The rational analysis of all his statements does not make me think that he will do everything to maintain” the agreement signed with Iran to prevent the Islamic republic from acquiring an atomic bomb.Asked whether such a decision would signify a personal failure for him, Macron stressed that his role “is not to try to convince President Trump to walk away from his campaign commitments.”Instead he offered further defense of the deal, saying “I’m trying to prove that this agreement makes sense.”The proposal that Macron put forward to his US counterpart involves preserving the existing agreement on the first of “four pillars” of a future deal.The others would address the period after 2025, when certain clauses concerning nuclear activities will sunset; Tehran’s highly controversial ballistic missile program; and its “destabilizing” role in the region.“For me it’s progress, it avoids falling into the complete unknown if the US decision is a hard exit,” said Macron, who confirmed that the proposal was a strategy coordinated with European partners and not a unilateral one.

A Copenhagen court on Wednesday found Danish inventor Peter Madsen guilty of the premeditated murder and sexual assault of Swedish journalist Kim Wall on his homemade submarine last year, handing him a life sentence.Madsen, 47, had admitted chopping up the 30-year-old’s body and throwing her remains overboard in waters off Copenhagen on the night of August 10, 2017, but claimed her death was accidental.A life sentence in Denmark averages around 16 years.Madsen, wearing a black T-shirt and blazer, stood in the courtroom to hear the verdict. As it was read out by the judge, he sat down next to his lawyer, visibly affected and dejected.Madsen’s lawyer said he would appeal the verdict.Wall, a freelance reporter, had set off with Madsen on his vessel on the evening of August 10 to interview him for a story she planned to write.During the trial, prosecutors argued that Madsen killed Wall as part of a dark sexual fantasy, stressing that he enjoyed watching videos of women being beheaded and tortured.But Madsen, who changed his version of events several times, told the court she died when the air pressure suddenly dropped and toxic fumes filled his vessel as he was up on deck.Despite the testimony of many experts, the lack of tangible evidence in the case and the decomposed state of Wall’s remains made it impossible to determine her exact cause of death.An autopsy report said she probably died as a result of suffocation or having her throat slit.But the professional judge and two lay judges found the incriminating circumstances were enough to find Madsen guilty, including the gruesome videos he watched, and the fact that he brought a saw, plastic strips and a sharpened screwdriver on board.Psychiatric experts who evaluated Madsen — who described himself to friends as “a psychopath, but a loving one” — found him to be “a pathological liar” who poses “a danger to others” and who was likely to be a repeat offender.Madsen is the 15th person in 10 years to receive a life sentence in the Nordic nation.

ZAGREB (Reuters) - Croatian police said on Wednesday they had arrested a 19-year old man they suspect of being behind an illegal internet service for cyber attacks called Webstresser.org.A police statement said the site allowed users to pay for so-called Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, which would shut down or slow websites by flooding them with data.Webstresser.org had 136,000 registered users and recorded four million cyber attacks by April this year, the statement said. The targets included online services of banks, businesses and public institutions across the globe.Any user could buy access to online DDoS infrastructure for a price starting at 15 euros, police said.Britain's National Crime Agency said seven of the biggest British banks had been victims of attacks using the Webstresser service in November 2017, forcing them to reduce operations or shut down entire systems and incurring costs in the hundreds of thousands of pounds to get services back up and running.The NCA did not name the institutions involved, but the Financial Times said they were Santander, Tesco Bank, RBS, Lloyds, HSBC, Clydesdale and Yorkshire Banking Group and Barclays.The arrested Croat will be charged for criminal acts against computer systems. MOLKINO, Russia (Reuters) - The Kremlin says it has nothing to do with Russian civilians fighting in Syria but on three recent occasions groups of men flying in from Damascus headed straight to a defense ministry base in Molkino, Reuters reporters witnessed.Molkino in southwestern Russia is where the Russian 10th Special Forces Brigade is based, according to information on the Kremlin website.The destination of the Russians arriving from Syria provides rare evidence of a covert Russian mission in Syria beyond the air strikes, training of Syrian forces and small numbers of special forces troops acknowledged by Moscow.Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Feb. 14 Russians may be in Syria but "they are not part of the armed forces of the Russian Federation". He referred Reuters to the defense ministry when asked why civilians fighting in Syria return to a military base. The ministry did not immediately respond.A duty officer at the 10th special forces brigade, asked why non-military people were entering the military base, said: "Nobody enters it, as far as I am aware ... You’ve seen them, okay. But you should not believe everything ... You can maybe. But how can we comment on what other organizations do?"More than 2,000 Russian contractors are fighting to help Syrian forces recapture land from their opponents, several sources, including one contractor, have said.The contractors are transferred by Syrian airline Cham Wings, the sources said.Reuters reporters saw a Syrian Cham Wings charter flight from Damascus land at the civilian airport in Rostov-on-Don on April 17 and watched groups of men leave the terminal through an exit separate from the one used by ordinary passengers.They boarded three buses, which took them to an area mainly used by airport staff. All three reached the village of Molkino, 350 km (220 miles) south, shortly before midnight.In the village, each bus paused for a minute or two at a checkpoint manned by at least two servicemen, before driving on. BEIJING (AP) — A study by Chinese geologists shows the mountain above North Korea's main nuclear test site has collapsed under the stress of the explosions, rendering it unsafe for further testing and necessitating monitoring for any leaking radiation.The findings by the scientists at the University of Science and Technology of China may shed new light on North Korean President Kim Jong Un's announcement that his country was ceasing its testing program.Nuclear explosions release enormous amounts of heat and energy, and the North's largest test in September was believed early on to have rendered the site in northeastern North Korea unstable.The data in the latest Chinese study was collected following the most powerful of the North's six nuclear device tests on Sept. 3 that is believed to have triggered four earthquakes over the following weeks. The yield of the bomb was estimated at more than 100 kilotons of TNT, at least 10 times stronger than anything the North had tested previously. (The bomb the United States dropped on Hiroshima in 1945 had a yield of about 15 kilotons.) The University of Science and Technology of China paper, authored by Tian Dongdong, Yao Jiawen and Wen Lianxing, said the first of those earthquakes that occurred eight-and-a-half minutes after the explosion was "an onsite collapse toward the nuclear test center," while those that followed were an "earthquake swarm" in similar locations."In view of the research finding that the North Korea nuclear test site at Mantapsan has collapsed, it is necessary to continue to monitor any leakage of radioactive materials that may have been caused by the collapse," the authors said in a summary dated Monday and viewed Wednesday on the university's website.The study is peer-reviewed and has been accepted for publication by the journal Geophysical Research Letters.The Chinese study makes sense and is based on well understood research, said Rowena Lohman, a seismologist at Cornell University who wasn't part of the work. She said she believes there's an international effort that monitors these tests for radiation.A study published last month by the journal, authored by a team led by Liu Junqing at the earthquake bureau in Jilin province along the border with North Korea, found similar results of the Sept. 3 explosion. It described the aftershock that followed seconds later as most likely the "rapid destruction of an explosion-generated cracked rock chimney due to cavity collapse."North Korea's nuclear tests are of special concern to Beijing, since the test site near the town of Kilju is less than 100 kilometers (60 miles) from the border with China.North Korean nuclear tests have caused seismic events in Chinese border towns and cities, forcing evacuations of schools and offices, sparking fears of wind-born radiation and leading to a backlash among some Chinese against their country's unpredictable traditional ally. Chinese authorities have said they've detected no radiation risk from the tests.Ties between the sides have been deteriorating for years, although Kim made a long-anticipated visit to Beijing last month after China's implementation of United Nations economic sanctions reduced trade between them by as much as 90 percent.The quakes that followed the September test were not man-made and didn't appear to cause any damage in the area. Norristown (United States) (AFP) - A US jury will deliberate for a second day Thursday in Bill Cosby's sexual assault retrial, tasked with deciding whether the disgraced megastar drugged and molested a young woman at his home 14 years ago.The frail 80-year-old could spend the rest of his life behind bars if convicted on three counts of aggravated indecent assault against Andrea Constand, then a Temple University employee, in 2004.The sequestered Pennsylvania jury of seven men and five women spent more than 10 hours at work on Wednesday, and recalled the court three times to ask questions and make further clarifications.Judge Steven O'Neill finally discharged them for the night at 9:33 pm (0033 GMT Thursday) after spending an hour and 40 minutes reading out -- as the jury requested -- portions of Cosby's 2006 deposition.Court will reconvene in Norristown, just outside Philadelphia, on Thursday for the jury to be read the testimony of the star defense witness, as also requested, before they resume their deliberations.The now 13-day court case heard around two dozen witnesses and is the first celebrity trial of the #MeToo era that has seen a litany of powerful men lose their jobs over sexual misconduct accusations.The defense mounted an aggressive case, portraying their multi-millionaire client as a misguided married man hoodwinked into a $3.38 million settlement by a con artist and pathological liar.The prosecution painted Cosby as the real "con," who exploited his fame as "America's Dad" to betray women's trust by drugging and sexually assaulting them against their will.The case has forever tarnished the legacy of the actor once adored by millions for his role as lovable father and obstetrician Cliff Huxtable on the 1984-92 hit television series "The Cosby Show."Cosby declined, again, to testify in court. His first trial ended in a hung jury in June with the sequestered panel hopelessly deadlocked after six days of testimony and 52 hours of deliberations.This time the jury has much more testimony to consider.- 'Inability to consent' -The once pioneering African American actor claims he gave Constand, who is now a massage therapist in Toronto, an over-the-counter antihistamine to relieve stress and that relations were consensual.Constand, who at the time was director of operations for women's basketball at Temple, says she passed out after Cosby gave her three blue pills, waking to find him penetrating her vagina with his fingers and making her masturbate his penis."I'm confident that you will come back and tell that man that what he did to Andrea Constand that night is against the law," prosecutor Kristen Feden told jurors on Tuesday.Cosby's high-powered team urged the jury to acquit the actor on all counts and save a "distinguished" elderly man from "absolute ruin.""You're dealing with a pathological liar, members of the jury, you are," said defense attorney Tom Mesereau.Their star witness, former Temple University employee Margo Jackson, claimed that Constand spoke of wanting to set up a celebrity for cash.The prosecution brought five other accusers to testify that Cosby was a serial predator, first winning their trust then deliberately drugging them to make them incapable of resisting.Prosecutors initially declined to press charges and Constand received $3.38 million in a civil settlement from Cosby in 2006.The district attorney reopened the case in 2015, arguing new evidence had come to light, while an avalanche of women came forward publicly to accuse Cosby of around 40 years of assault.Around 60 women have accused the Emmy winner of being a serial predator, but Constand's is the only case that happened recently enough to criminally prosecute.

TORONTO (AP) — People who died when a van plowed down a Toronto sidewalk came from all walks of life, and from several countries. They included a grandmother who was an avid sports fan, and a woman who volunteered to build houses in the Dominican Republic.Several victims have not been identified. Seneca College said one of its female students was killed, but declined to identify her, citing privacy reasons. Two South Koreans were among the dead, Yonhap News Agency reported, citing government officials.A look at the victims who have been identified: ANNE MARIE D'AMICO-D'Amico, 30, worked at Invesco, an investment management firm near the attack. Toronto City Councilor Cesar Palacio, who knows D'Amico's family, identified her as a victim.D'Amico volunteered at Canada-based international humanitarian charity Live Different. She helped build houses in the Dominican Republic in 2015 and 2017, according to Dave Hamilton, the charity's manager of school partnerships.She was "always up for a challenge and really wanted to help people out," he said.Brodie MacDonald, a friend of D'Amico's, posted a video on Facebook of her playing baseball in the Dominican Republic and wrote that her love of the game is what brought them close."I am so angry at the world today and I am so sorry that this happened to you and as tears roll down my face thinking about the incredible person that you were, please know that you made a difference in so many peoples' lives," he wrote.D'Amico also volunteered with the nonprofit Tennis Canada association, working at the Rogers Cup tournament since the age of 12. She was voted volunteer of the year in 2016.DOROTHY SEWELL-Sewell, 80, was a grandmother who was an avid sports fan, said her grandson, Elwood Delaney.Delaney, of Kamloops in British Columbia, posted on Facebook that he had to tell his three children and his wife "that they will no longer get to talk to Nan" on birthdays or holidays.He said his grandmother almost had as much love for the Blue Jays baseball team and the Maple Leafs hockey team "as she did for her family.""You will always be loved and your love for sports will always be with me while I cheer with you," he wrote on Facebook. "Go Toronto Go. Love you Nan."Two of Sewell's neighbors, Paul and Eweline Matusiewicz, choked back tears at a shrine of flowers on Yonge Street, where they were paying their respects.They had found out Sewell was among the victims just a half-hour before arriving at the memorial."She was just the sweetest soul," Paul Matusiewicz said.RENUKA AMARASINGHA-Amarasingha, 45, lived in a rented home with her 7-year-old son, Diyon.She was a Canadian citizen who came to the country from Horana, Sri Lanka. She had lived in Toronto for about 15 years, said Ahangama Rathanasiri Thero, chief monk at the Mahavihara Buddhist Meditation Centre.Amarasingha had worked at school cafeterias around the city since 2015 and had just finished her first day at a school near the van scene when her life "was tragically cut short," school district Education Director John Malloy said in a statement.Friend Thilina Pelendage said Amarasingha was known for her joking nature, and for never forgetting people's birthdays."She always had such a big heart," Pelendage said.Amarasingha came to the temple frequently, sometimes helping arrange religious ceremonies, Thero said."She was a very kind and helpful lady," he said. "She was a good mother."Amarasingha was at the temple the day before she died, attending a Sunday school celebration.She had no family in Toronto. The temple planned to make funeral arrangements and to collect money for Diyon's future.Another family in Toronto's Sri Lankan community with whom Amarasingha once lived planned to care for the boy, Pelendage said.MUNAIR NAJJAR-Najjar was a citizen of Jordan who was in Toronto visiting family, according to state-run news agency Petra.Najjar, who is in his 70s, had only been in Canada for a couple of weeks, according to Harry Malawi, a family friend and president of the Jordanian Canadian Society.The family is in the midst of a three-day mourning period, he said."They are secluded right now and they ask everybody to accept their privacy," he said. SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Reuters) - An elderly former policeman has been arrested and charged with eight murders attributed to the Golden State Killer, a serial criminal responsible for dozens of rapes and slayings that terrorized parts of California during the 1970s and 1980s, authorities said on Wednesday.The suspect was identified at a Sacramento news conference as Joseph James DeAngelo, 72, in a case officials said was finally solved by DNA evidence about two months after gaining renewed attention in the bestselling book, "I'll Be Gone in the Dark."Sacramento County Sheriff Scott Jones credited the book with helping to generate new tips but said no information was "extracted from that book that directly led to the apprehension."The Federal Bureau of Investigation has previously said that the man sought in the 40-year-old case was tied to 12 slayings, 45 rapes and more than 120 burglaries in and around Sacramento, the eastern San Francisco Bay area and Southern California.The crime spree spanned 10 California counties in all, said Sacramento County District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert, who recalled she was 12 in 1976 when a wave of violent home invasions shattered a "time of innocence" in which area residents routinely left their doors unlocked.The suspect, also dubbed by investigators as the "East Area Rapist" and the "Original Night Stalker," is considered one of the state's most prolific serial killers, the FBI said."Finally, after all these years, the haunting question of who committed these terrible crimes has been put to rest," Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas told reporters.DeAngelo was living in the Sacramento suburb of Citrus Heights when arrested on Tuesday. He had been under surveillance for a few days and was taken into custody without incident as he emerged from his house, Jones said, adding that the suspect appeared "surprised" when confronted.He is due to be arraigned in Sacramento, the state capital, on Friday.Jones said DeAngelo was an officer in two small-town California police departments during the 1970s - Exeter and Auburn. DeAngelo was fired from the Auburn force in 1979, Jones said, after being accused of shoplifting a hammer and dog repellant from a store.Authorities had long speculated the killer had some military or law enforcement training because of his proficiency with firearms and ability to elude capture for so long.Jones acknowledged that some of the earlier crimes were committed while DeAngelo was a policeman. But authorities said his name had never surfaced as a suspect prior to the latest break in the case, which they said came from a "discarded DNA sample" obtained by investigators.Efforts to capture the killer were renewed in June 2016, when the FBI offered a $50,000 reward for the suspect, who was known for creeping into the homes of couples at night, tying them up and raping the woman before killing both victims.Between 1976 and 1978, he committed a wave of burglaries, rapes and killings in the Sacramento area, then centered his attacks in the East Bay before moving on to Ventura and Orange counties to the south, according to the FBI.He was formally charged in Sacramento County this week with two counts of murder for the February 1978 killings of Brian Maggiore and his wife, Katie, who were on an evening walk with their dog when they were chased down and slain in what became the first homicide linked to an earlier series of East Bay rapes. Two additional murder charges were filed in Ventura County and four more were brought in Orange County.The killings were intensively explored in “I’ll Be Gone in the Dark,” published in February.
