Residents of two Palestinian villages found cars tires slashed and Hebrew-language slogans spray-painted on walls Wednesday morning, bringing the number of such vandalism attacks in Israel and the West Bank overnight to three.In Deir Ammar, northwest of the Beit El settlement, the tires of some 15 vehicles were slashed and the phrases “Let us take care of them” and “We’ll take our fate into our own hands” were found graffitied on walls outside several homes, police said.In Jalud, north of the Shiloh settlement, the same slogans were found spray-painted on various homes and the tires of four cars were punctured, police said.The name of a far-right activist who has received an administrative order restricting him from the West Bank was also referenced in one of the graffiti messages in Jalud.Criticism of the defense establishment’s employment of administrative orders issued in response to settler violence has been a common theme in much of the graffiti found at the scene of hate crime attacks on Palestinian villages.The hilltop youth who have been the primary targets of such orders have have argued that they rob them of due process.Also overnight, two cars were torched and Hebrew-language racist graffiti was daubed in an Arab Israeli village. Arsonists burned the two vehicles in the village of Iksal, in the north of country. On a wall a Hebrew slogan read, “Jews let’s win.” Police opened an investigation.The incidents in Iksal, Deir Ammar and Jalud followed similar hate crimes that have taken place this month in the West Bank villages of Ramun, Beit Iksa, Burqa, Burin, Urif, As-Sawiya and Luban a-Sharqiya, Aqraba, and Fara’ata. In total 11 such incidents have been logged.Attacks have included the chopping down of dozens of olive trees, stones thrown through the windows of homes, and cars and graffiti calling for the murder of Arabs.Israeli settlers also suffered property damage on Wednesday in an attack that they blamed on Palestinians.Police said they had opened an investigation after some 150 grapevines in a vineyard belonging to a resident of the Jordan Valley settlement of Tomer were chopped down overnight.The owner of the vineyard, Yossi Kirshenberg, said in a statement that the perpetrators “chose to act against me because I am the representative of the security establishment and the security coordinator of the community.”On Sunday, the Shin Bet security service released statistics showing far-right hate crimes against Palestinians have increased significantly since the beginning of 2018.Through the first four months of the current calendar year, the Shin Bet documented 13 anti-Arab attacks (not including incidents this week). That was in contrast with only eight such incidents in all of 2017.On Monday, a defense official told The Times of Israel that the security establishment views the northern West Bank settlement of Yitzhar as primarily responsible for the recent uptick in such incidents.The town of roughly 1,500 residents has become a “refuge for hilltop youth” who have been involved in most of the so-called price tag attacks in the past year, the official said. The young activists are often referred to as hilltop youth due to their practice of setting up illegal outposts on West Bank hilltops.The perpetrators of such attacks often use the slogan “price tag” to describe them. They say that the attacks are in retaliation for Palestinian violence or government policies perceived as hostile to the settler movement. The body of an assassinated Palestinian scientist was driven Wednesday through the Malaysian capital accompanied by a crowd shouting for revenge, as mourners accused Israel of killing him.Fadi Mohammad al-Batsh, a member of the Islamist terror group Hamas said to be a rocket-making expert, was shot by motorbike-riding attackers Saturday as he walked from his Kuala Lumpur home to a mosque for dawn prayers.Family and friends of the 35-year-old, along with Hamas, have accused Israel’s Mossad spy agency of carrying out the killing, but Israel has denied the claim.Hundreds of mourners marched through the capital under Palestinian flags accompanying a van holding the body. An organization representing more than 950 US Orthodox rabbis has condemned an “alarming” increase in violent attacks on Jews in New York City, saying it would work with authorities to provide protection to “neighborhoods under siege” after at least two anti-Semitic assaults within a week.The Rabbinical Alliance of America — also known as “Iggud HaRabbonim” — said in a statement Monday that it “categorically condemns the alarming increase of horrifying physical attacks on Jews throughout New York City and beyond, and calls on all community, civic and political leaders to unite in denouncing this violent Jew hatred.”The professional rabbinical organization, which was founded in 1942, listed three recent incidents in which Jews were violently attacked, two of which have been confirmed as anti-Semitic.On Saturday, 52-year-old Menachem Moskowitz, an ultra-Orthodox Jew, was violently assaulted while walking home from Shabbat services in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn.Police have opened an investigation into the attack as an assault motivated by bias, after the victim said the assailant had told him he “hated Jews” and threatened to kill him.In footage that emerged Monday of the brutal anti-Semitic assault, the attacker can be seen jumping on Moskowitz from behind in the Crown Heights neighborhood in Brooklyn, sending his hat and glasses flying into a nearby garden, beating him, pushing him up against an iron fence, and attempting to strangle him.“I turned around and I see that he’s right behind me and he jumped me. And then he said ‘I hate Jews,’” Moskowitz told CBS late Sunday. “He put me in a headlock and I’m trying to maneuver out of him. In the meantime, I’m screaming, ‘Help! Help! Help! Help!’ He says, ‘You don’t need help. I’m going to kill you right here.’”Moskowitz sustained a cracked rib along with a black eye, swelling, bruising and scratches over his body.On April 13, a Jewish man was assaulted in the Crown Heights near 770 Eastern Parkway, the international headquarters of the Chabad movement, with police opening a bias investigation into the attack.The man, who was walking with another ultra-Orthodox man, was attacked late in the evening by three black men and two black women, CrownHeights.info reported. One of the assailants asked the man, “Do you want to fight?” and began to kick and punch him with others joining in the attack.The Rabbinical Alliance of America also mentioned in its statement an incident in which Madraque Tyquan Bailey, 22, a FedEx employee, repeatedly stabbed 28-year-old Jack Gindi, a Jewish man, in the Midtown section of Manhattan on Monday, on West 33rd Street and Fifth Avenue. The suspect was apprehended while the victim was seriously wounded and taken for treatment.However, police said that Bailey knew Gindi, and that the brutal attack was the result of a dispute between them rather than anti-Jewish bias.“The egregious scourge of anti-Semitism has reared its loathsome head once again,” said Rabbi Mendy Mirocznik, the organization’s vice president. “We cannot deny it, or even worse turn a blind eye to it.“We intend to work closely with law enforcement officials towards the goal of providing sufficient protection to neighborhoods under siege,” he added. “We also ask that the NYPD continue their investigations in finding and apprehending the assailants who are still on the loose and we ask that each of them is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.“Everyone in this blessedly diverse society is at risk when anti-Semitism, racism and xenophobia rise,” Rabbi Mirocznik concluded. “We must organize to stem the tide of such toxic hatred with every method at our disposal in order to protect the people of this great country.”

Rome’s Jewish community said it will boycott official ceremonies marking Italy’s Liberation Day because of the inclusion of pro-Palestinian groups that intend to protest against Israel.The April 25 holiday marks Italy’s liberation from the Nazis in 1945. Marches and commemorative rallies are scheduled to be held in many cities on Wednesday.A statement issued Tuesday said the Rome Jewish Community would hold its own separate observances to which the public also would be invited.It said that despite agreements signed earlier this month by the National Association of Italian Partisans, or ANPI, Rome’s mayor and the head of the Jewish community, “ANPI failed to take an official and definitive position against the organized participation of Palestinian and pro-Palestinian associations that carry symbols alien to the spirit of April 25.”The statement added: “It is unacceptable and inconsistent with history to maintain an attitude of impartiality between symbols of those who fought with the Nazis and those of the Jewish Brigade.”The Jewish Brigade, or Jewish Infantry Brigade Group, was part of the British Army formed by about 5,000 Jewish volunteers from British Mandatory Palestine. It fought against the Germans in Northern Italy in March and April 1945. The brigade fought under a flag similar to today’s Israeli flag.Pro-Palestinian groups have taken part in the marches for decades, but in recent years open tensions and sometimes violent confrontations have erupted.

Russia will supply the Syrian regime with new air defense systems in the near future, the RIA news agency reported Wednesday, citing the Russian Defense Ministry.The report did not specify what type of systems Moscow will give its Damascus ally.On Monday, the Russian daily Kommersant reported that Moscow was getting closer to delivering its S-300 missile defense system to Syrian dictator Bashar Assad, despite Israel’s efforts to prevent it. The suspected driver of a van that jumped the curb and drove through a crowd of pedestrians Monday in Toronto has been charged.Alek Minassian, 25, faces 10 counts of first-degree murder and 13 counts of attempted murder. Due to the gravity of his alleged crimes, he will remain detained while he awaits his next court appearance scheduled for May 10.Police say they are anticipating a 14th count of attempted murder, but that has not been made official at this time.Minassian was arrested by Toronto police after at least 24 people were struck by a vehicle on Yonge Street near Finch Avenue in the north end of the city. Ten people are confirmed dead and 14 others are injured. Police had previously said 15 people were hurt.During a Tuesday news conference, Det. Graham Gibson confirmed “the accused is alleged to have posted a cryptic message on Facebook” moments before the van slammed into pedestrians. That message is believed to have praised Elliot Rodger, the 22-year-old killer in a 2014 California rampage known for his reported hatred of women, but police wouldn’t go into details to confirm the connection.Gibson said the victims were “predominantly female,” ranging in age from their mid 20s to 80s. Injuries range from “scrapes and bruises to terrible injuries,” he added.It is “far too early to say” whether the suspect was mentally ill, the detective told members of the media. Gibson did confirm that the van used in the attack was rented north of the city.As for the police response, Toronto police Chief Mark Saunders said it took officers seven minutes from the first call to the moment of arrest to detain the suspect.
