Israel caused serious harm to Syria’s air defenses, says IAF second-in-command-Downed Iranian drone quite sophisticated, emulates Western technology, according to Brig. Gen. Tomer Bar; Netanyahu, Liberman, IDF chief convene for emergency consultations-By TOI staff and Agencies-FEB 11,18

Israel inflicted serious harm to Syria’s air defenses, said IAF Air Staff Commander Brig. Gen. Tomer Bar on Saturday, after the IDF launched a number of airstrikes on Iranian and Syrian targets in Syria, following the interception on Saturday morning of an unmanned Iranian drone in Israeli airspace.Bar, the Israeli Air Force’s second-in-command, said the response was “the biggest and most significant attack the air force has conducted against Syrian air defenses since Operation Peace for the Galilee” in 1982 during the First Lebanon War.Syria’s responding anti-aircraft fire led to the downing of an Israeli fighter plane in which two pilots were injured, one seriously and another lightly. Both were being treated at Rambam Hospital in Haifa.Israel said the drone infiltration was a “severe and irregular violation of Israeli sovereignty,” and warned of further action against unprecedented Iranian aggression.Bar said the Iranian drone remained in Israel’s airspace for a minute and a half before being taken out by a combat helicopter over the city of Beit Shean, near the Jordanian border. He added that the drone was quite advanced and emulated Western technology.Bar said Israel would study the drone. After the UAV was intercepted, Israel targeted at least 12 other sites “including three aerial defense batteries and four Iranian targets that are part of Iran’s military establishment in Syria,” according to a military statement. The Israeli military said its planes faced massive anti-aircraft fire from Syria that forced the two pilots to abandon an F-16 jet that crashed in northern Israel. Bar said the pilots did not report being hit but carried out ejection procedures.“We are verifying what caused the pilots’ injuries,” Bar said, “whether from an anti-aircraft missile or from ejecting. It’s not clear whether the missile hit the plane but we are assuming it did.”If the plane was in fact shot down by enemy fire, it could mark the first such instance for Israel since 1982 during the first Lebanon war.The events marked a dramatic escalation in tensions along Israel’s northern border, and were part of the most serious confrontation between Israel and Iran since the start of the civil war in Syria in March 2011.Bar described the incident as “Syrian chutzpah,” and said Israel responded accordingly, adding that the airstrikes inflicted “significant harm to the Syrian Air Force’s defenses” which included “anti-aircraft batteries purchased in recent deals [with the Russians].”Israeli military spokesman Jonathan Conricus warned that Syria and Iran were “playing with fire,” but stressed his country was not seeking an escalation. “This is the most blatant and severe Iranian violation of Israeli sovereignty in the last years,” Conricus told journalists in a phone conference. He did not say whether the drone was armed or for reconnaissance, but alleged it “was on a military mission sent by Iranian military forces” from an “Iranian base” in the Palmyra area.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman and IDF Chief-of-Staff Gadi Eizenkot were convening with top brass at military headquarters in Tel Aviv for emergency consultations on Saturday to discuss a possible further response. The IDF released video footage early Saturday afternoon of the drone’s destruction over Israeli territory as well as the subsequent IDF strike on its Iranian command vehicle in Syria.‪An Iranian UAV crossed into Israeli territory and was intercepted by an attack helicopter‬-Posted by Israel Defense Forces on Saturday, 10 February 2018-Meanwhile, Iran and Syria said Israeli allegations that an Iranian drone infiltrated Israeli airspace were lies.A spokesman for Iran’s Supreme National Security Council said the Syrian response was “a clear warning to Israel. The era of Israeli strikes on Syria is over.” He vowed a “relentless response” to “all further aggression.”A Syrian statement said Israeli jets targeted a drone base in central Syria whose mission is to gather intelligence on IS in the area. It said the station was hit while drones were on regular missions in the country’s desert in Homs province. The statement said it was “a lie and misleading” to say the drone had entered Israel’s airspace. In its airstrikes, Israel hit four Iranian positions and eight Syrian sites in Syria. Conricus said the Israeli jets faced between 15 to 20 anti-aircraft missiles fired by SA-5 and SA-17 batteries. All the Israeli jets in those sorties returned home safely.Israel has taken great care to coordinate all its actions in the area with Russia, which backs Syrian President Bashar Assad and maintains a large military presence in the country. But Russia’s foreign ministry expressed concern over Saturday’s strike and called for restraint.“We consider it necessary to unconditionally respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria and other countries of the region,” it said in a statement. “It is absolutely unacceptable to create threats to the lives and security of Russian servicemen who are in Syria at the invitation of its legitimate government to assist in the fight against terrorists.”The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which monitors the war in Syria, said Israel targeted the edges of a military air base, called T-4, in the Homs desert near Palmyra, where Iranian and Hezbollah forces are based alongside Syrian troops. The Observatory said the raids resulted in casualties, but didn’t specify. It also said Israeli raids targeted areas in southwestern Damascus, bordering the southern provinces. This was followed by raids on Syrian government posts along the Damascus-Beirut road, close to the border between Syria and Lebanon.

After northern clashes, Israel calls on UN to ‘end Iranian provocations’-Israeli envoy to UN, Danny Danon, says Security Council cannot 'stand idly by while Iran is instigating dangerous escalations and violating resolutions'-By TOI staff and AP-FEB 11,18

Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, called on the Security Council on Saturday to end “Iranian provocations” hours after Israel shot down a sophisticated Iranian drone that had breached Israeli airspace, and targeted a dozen Syrian and Iranian military sites in Syria in response before an Israeli F-16 jet was downed, injuring two pilots. The incident marks the most significant confrontation between Israel and Syria and Iran since the Syrian civil war began in March 2011.“All of our warnings regarding Iran have proven correct. We will not tolerate any violation of our sovereignty,” Danon wrote to UN Security Council members in a letter on Saturday.“This is not the first time that we have warned you of Iran’s dangerous actions that undermine the situation in our region. This incident proves every one of those warnings correct. Israel will defend its citizens and will not tolerate any violation of its sovereignty,” he wrote.Danon called on the Security Council to “condemn this dangerous act and to put an immediate end to Iranian provocations.”“Security Council members must not stand idly by while Iran is instigating dangerous escalations and violating Security Council resolutions,” he said.Israel has issued several stern warnings of late about the increased Iranian involvement along its border in Syria and Lebanon. The Israeli cabinet just held a meeting near the Syrian border to highlight the new threats, which it attributes to Iran’s growing confidence given the success of the government of Bashar Assad in the Syrian civil war, thanks to their support.Israel called the drone infiltration a “severe and irregular violation of Israeli sovereignty,” and warned that Iran would be held accountable for its meddling, raising the specter of a larger confrontation in an area that has remained largely stable since a monthlong war between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon in 2006.“This is a serious Iranian attack on Israeli territory. Iran is dragging the region into an adventure in which it doesn’t know how it will end,” Israel’s chief military spokesman, Brig. Gen. Ronen Manelis, said in a special statement. “Whoever is responsible for this incident is the one who will pay the price.”After the UAV was intercepted, Israel targeted at least 12 sites “including three aerial defense batteries and four Iranian targets that are part of Iran’s military establishment in Syria,” according to an Israeli military statement. The Israeli military said its planes faced massive anti-aircraft fire from Syria that forced two pilots to abandon an F-16 jet that crashed in northern Israel. The pilots were injured, one seriously and another lightly.Israel would not confirm whether the aircraft was actually shot down by enemy fire, which would mark the first such instance for Israel since 1982 during the first Lebanon war.Israel has long complained about the involvement of archenemy Iran, and Iranian proxy Hezbollah, in the Syria war. Both have sent forces to back Assad, who appears headed toward victory after years of fighting. Israel has said it will not accept a permanent military presence by Iran and its Shiite allies in Syria, especially near the Israeli border.Israel has shot down several drones that previously tried to infiltrate its territory from Syria. The capture of an Iranian drone and the targeting of Iranian sites in response, however, marked a dramatic escalation in the Israeli retaliation. The military confirmed that the initial target in Syria — the unmanned aircraft’s launch components — was successfully destroyed, and released grainy footage of the strike. Israel also said it had recovered the remnants of the drone, which proved that it belonged to Iran.An Iranian UAV crossed into Israeli territory and was intercepted by an attack helicopter‬-Posted by Israel Defense Forces on Saturday, 10 February 2018-IAF second-in-command Brig. Gen. Tomer Bar said Saturday that the IAF was investigating.“We are verifying what caused the pilots’ injuries,” Bar said earlier Saturday, “whether from an anti-aircraft missile or from ejecting. It’s not clear whether the missile hit the plane but we are assuming it did.”

Lebanon signs offshore drilling deal amid dispute with Israel-French, Italian and Russian consortium confident no issues will arise over conflicting claims, even after Israel warns against 'provocative behavior'-By AFP-TOI-11 February 2018

BEIRUT, Lebanon — Lebanon on Friday signed its first contract to drill for oil and gas off its coast with a consortium comprising energy giants Total, ENI, and Novatek, including in a block disputed by Israel.Israel says one of two blocks in the eastern Mediterranean where Lebanon wants to drill for oil belongs to it, and last week denounced any exploration by Beirut as “provocative.”President Michel Aoun said at a signing ceremony that Lebanon has “entered a new chapter in its history and is now a member of energy-producing countries.”Looking to tap potential oil and gas reserves after major offshore discoveries by neighboring Israel and Cyprus, the Mediterranean country in December approved a bid on blocks four and nine.Block nine is the disputed block with Israel.Exploration is set to begin in 2019.French energy giant Total and Italy’s Eni each hold a 40 percent stake in the consortium, and Russia’s Novatek has a 20 percent stake.Total welcomed the deal, saying it stipulates that drilling will take place in “at least one well per block in the first three years,” and that the “consortium’s priority will be to drill a first exploration well on Block 4 in 2019.”“As for Block 9, Total and its partners are fully aware of the Israeli-Lebanese border dispute in the southern part of the block that covers only very limited area (less than 8 percent of the block’s surface).“Given that the main prospects are located more than 25 km (15.5 miles) from the disputed area, the consortium confirms that the exploration well on Block 9 will have no interference at all with any fields or prospects located south of the border area,” it added in a statement issued in English.Last week, Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Liberman accused Lebanon of “provocative behavior.”“They issue a tender on a gas field — including a bloc which by all accounts is ours — to international groups that are respectable companies, which, to my mind, is making a serious mistake, since it’s against all rules and protocol in cases like this,” he said.Lebanese Energy Minister Cesar Abi Khalil responded by saying Lebanon would defend its right to drill there.“Israel will do what it can to block us from taking advantage of our oil wealth, and we will do everything in our power to defend it,” he said.Tensions between the two neighbors — which are technically still at war — have also mounted as Israel pursues the construction of a barrier along the border.Lebanon says part of the wall follows the UN-demarcated “Blue Line” drawn up after Israel’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon in 2000, and insists some sections will cut into its territory.Israel dismissed the claim and said on Tuesday the work is being carried out on Israeli territory.Israel began building the series of obstacles in 2012, six years after fighting a devastating war with Lebanese Shiite terror group Hezbollah.

Condition of F-16 pilot in downed jet improves after emergency surgery-Head of Rambam hospital says aviator suffered wounds to chest, abdomen while ejecting from jet; co-pilot set to be released home Sunday-By TOI staff and AFP-FEB 11,18

The condition of a seriously wounded Israeli pilot began to improve Saturday, after he underwent surgery for injuries he sustained while ejecting from his plane over northern Israel, in the midst of a severe confrontation between Israel, Syria, and Iran. The F-16 jet he was piloting took part in Israeli airstrikes in response to an Iranian drone that entered Israeli airspace from Syria in the early morning hours on Saturday. The Israeli Air Force said it was investigating what caused the pilots to eject and if the aircraft was hit by Syrian anti-aircraft missiles. If the plane was in fact shot down by enemy fire, it would mark the first such instance for Israel since the 1982 Lebanon War.Dr. Rafi Beyar, the head of Haifa’s Rambam Medical Center, said the pilot was in stable condition after suffering injuries to his chest and abdomen. He said the pilot, who was still unconscious and connected to a respirator, also required blood transfusions.Beyar said a second pilot, who was lightly injured while abandoning the aircraft, was set to be released from the hospital on Sunday.President Reuven Rivlin later spoke with the second pilot.”My heart is with you and your comrades, and I hope that I will meet you soon. You and the entire squadron have proven that you do not come back until your mission is fulfilled, and I thank God together with the entire nation that you have returned,” Rivlin told the pilot, according to his spokesperson. The jet itself crashed into a field near Kibbutz Harduf in the Jezreel Valley. The F-16 was one of several scrambled to conduct strikes in Syria early Saturday after an Iranian drone infiltrated Israeli airspace. The army responded with a strike on the drone’s launch site, including a control facility manned by Iranian operators. The military later launched a second wave of raids on a dozen Syrian and Iranian targets inside Syria. The air force was met with heavy anti-aircraft fire, including multiple missiles. The Syrian response set off multiple warning sirens in Israel. The exchange of fire was the most serious between Israel and Iran since the start of the civil war in Syria in 2011. It marked the first time Israel publicly acknowledged attacking what it identified as Iranian targets in Syria since the war began.According to the Israeli military, the confrontation began with the drone entering Israeli airspace before being intercepted by a combat helicopter over the city of Beit Shean, near the Jordanian border. The military called the infiltration a “severe and irregular violation of Israeli sovereignty,” and said Iran would be held responsible for its outcome, marking a dramatic escalation in tensions along Israel’s northern border. The IDF released video footage early Saturday afternoon of the drone’s destruction over Israeli territory, as well as the subsequent IDF strike on its Iranian command vehicle in Syria.‪An Iranian UAV crossed into Israeli territory and was intercepted by an attack helicopter‬-Posted by Israel Defense Forces on Saturday, 10 February 2018-A spokesman for Iran’s Supreme National Security Council said the Syrian response was “a clear warning to Israel. It said the station was hit while drones were on regular missions in the country’s desert in Homs province. The statement said it was “a lie and misleading” to say the drone had entered Israel’s airspace.Military spokesman Jonathan Conricus said the army had information on the drone’s mission, but would not go into details, saying only that it was “on a military mission sent and operated by Iranian military forces.”He warned that Syria and Iran were “playing with fire,” but stressed that his country was not seeking an escalation.IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Gadi Eisenkot and Air Force chief Maj. Gen. Amikam Norkin were leading operations from army headquarters in Tel Aviv, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu holding security assessments and approving operations in real time.By noon Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman was convening the top brass at military headquarters in Tel Aviv to discuss a further response.“The IDF is following events and is fully prepared for further action according to decisions and need,” the military said.Israel has been warning of late of the increased Iranian involvement along its border in Syria and Lebanon. It fears Iran could use Syrian territory to stage attacks, or create a land corridor from Iran to Lebanon that could allow it to transfer weapons more easily to Hezbollah. The Israeli Cabinet recently held a meeting on the Golan Heights near the border with Syria to highlight new threats, which are attributed to Iran’s growing confidence given Assad’s apparent victory in Syria thanks to their help.Agencies contributed to this report.

Despite northern escalation, 100,000 people across Israel visit national parks-Hikers flock to nature reserves throughout country, including in north, after clashes sparked by Iranian UAV infiltration into Israel-By TOI staff-FEB 11,18

Despite the escalation on the northern border, some 100,000 people visited national parks throughout the country on Saturday, including in the north, the Israel Nature and Parks Authority said.Among the sites in northern Israel to see thousands of visitors were Mount Hermon, as well as the Banias and Hula Valley nature reserves, the Parks Authority said. Both Mount Hermon and the Banias Nature Reserve are located in the Golan Heights, which Israel captured from Syria in the 1967 Six Day War.Early Saturday, an Iranian drone that entered Israel from Syria was shot down by an Israeli Air Force combat helicopter. In response, Israel struck Iranian and Syrian military targets in Syria, and an Israeli F-16 jet was downed over Israel after it was targeted by Syrian anti-aircraft missiles. The condition of the pilot, who was seriously injured after he was forced to evacuate the plane, stabilized Saturday morning, but he was still unconscious and connected to a respirator, doctors at Haifa’s Rambam Medical Center said.A second pilot was lightly injured while abandoning the aircraft. The jet itself crashed into a field near Kibbutz Harduf in the Jezreel Valley.Following the initial exchange of fire, the military attacked 12 Syrian and Iranian targets in Syria a new wave of strikes it described as a “large-scale” attack. The military called the drone infiltration a “severe and irregular violation of Israeli sovereignty” and said Iran would be held responsible for its outcome, marking a dramatic escalation in tensions along its northern border. After Iran and Syria denied that the unmanned drone violated the Jewish state’s airspace, the Israel Defense Forces released video footage of the drone’s destruction over Israeli territory, as well as the subsequent IDF strike on its Iranian command vehicle in Syria.‪An Iranian UAV crossed into Israeli territory and was intercepted by an attack helicopter‬-Posted by Israel Defense Forces on Saturday, 10 February 2018-A Syrian statement said Israeli jets targeted a drone base in central Syria whose mission is to gather intelligence on IS in the area. The era of Israeli strikes on Syria is over.” He vowed a “relentless response” to “all further aggression.”The deputy chief of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards warned, meanwhile, that his country could “bring hell upon the Zionist regime.”Brigadier General Hossein Salami refused to confirm to the Tasnim news agency that an Iranian drone had been shot down. “We cannot confirm this report on the drone because Israelis are liars … if Syrians confirm it, Iran will confirm it as well,” said Salami, according to a Reuters translation.IDF Spokesman Brig. Gen. Ronen Manelis said Israel held Iran directly responsible for the incident.“This is a serious Iranian attack on Israeli territory. Palestinian stopped outside Hebron holy site with knife-With Border Police weapons cocked at him after setting off metal detector outside Tomb of Patriarchs, 15-year-old raises shirt to reveal weapon-By Jacob Magid-FEB 11,18-TOI
For the second day in a row, Border Police arrested a Palestinian suspect in the West Bank city of Hebron on Saturday, after finding a knife hidden under his clothes at the entrance to the Tomb of the Patriarchs holy site. After the 15-year-old boy set off the metal detector at a checkpoint outside the holy site, officers cocked their weapons at him and asked him to slowly raise his shirt.Upon recognizing the knife underneath, security forces detained the teen and took him in for additional questioning.Less than 24 hours earlier, Border Police forces made a similar arrest of a 23-year-old Palestinian man who raised the suspicions of officers at the holy site’s entrance. They uncovered a knife under his clothes upon carrying out a full-body inspection. Also Friday, security forces arrested an armed Palestinian teenager at the entrance to the West Bank settlement of Hashmonaim. The Tomb of the Patriarchs is a frequent target for attempted stabbing attacks. In January Border Police officers made similar arrests of a man and a woman in two separate incidents at the site, after finding knives on their persons.A Palestinian teen was arrested trying to enter the holy site with a knife in December, and in November two 17-year-old Palestinians were also detained after each attempted to smuggle a knife into the site in two separate incidents a day apart.

Israel urges Russia to prevent further escalation in Syria-Moscow calls for 'restraint' on all sides following clashes, says risk to lives of Russian soldiers 'absolutely unacceptable'-By TOI staff and Agencies-FEB 11,18

Israel appealed to Russia to intervene and prevent further escalation after an Iranian drone was shot down over Israel Saturday, leading to “large-scale” Israeli strikes in Syria and heavy Syrian counter-fire. An Israeli F-16 fighter jet subsequently crashed under fire from Syrian air defenses in a severe increase in tensions.Diplomatic sources said Israel was in contact with officials in Moscow, seeking to convey a message to Syria and Iran that though it had landed a heavy blow in response to the drone incident, it was not interested in further violence.Similar calming messages were reportedly passed on to Washington.Moscow, in a statement, called for “restraint” of all parties in Syria and said it considered risking the lives of Russian soldiers “absolutely unacceptable” following large-scale Israeli air strikes inside Syria.“We strongly call on all sides involved to show restraint and avoid all acts that could lead to complicating the situation further,” the Russian foreign ministry said.“It is absolutely unacceptable to create threats to the lives and security of Russian soldiers that are in the Syrian Arab Republic on the invitation of the legal government to assist in the fight against terrorism,” it added.Israel has told Moscow that Saturday’s events are proof that its warnings of Iranian entrenchment and growing boldness in Syria were merited, sources told the Ynet news site.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has held a series of meetings in recent months with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Iran’s influence in war-torn Syria and Lebanon.Netanyahu has been seeking to persuade Russia to limit Iran’s presence near Israeli territory and to stop it from entrenching itself militarily in Syria.Israel struck a dozen Syrian and Iranian targets inside the civil war-torn country on Saturday in what it said was a “large-scale” attack, after the Iranian drone was shot down over Israeli territory, and an Israeli F-16 fighter jet subsequently crashed under fire from Syrian air defenses. The two pilots ejected; one of them was seriously injured and the second was lightly injured. The confrontation was the most serious between Israel and Iran since the start of the civil war in Syria in 2011.Russia, Iran and Lebanon’s Hezbollah — which is backed by Tehran — all support Syrian President Bashar Assad in the civil conflict. In a meeting in Moscow last month, Netanyahu reiterated Israel’s concerns with what he described as Iranian attempts to establish a military presence in Syria and produce weapons capable of precision strikes against Israel there.“We won’t accept either of those, and will act according to our needs,” Netanyahu said following the meeting with Putin.Israel remains technically at war with Syria and occupies a swathe of the strategic Golan Heights that it seized in the Six Day War of 1967 and later annexed in a move never recognized by the international community. On Tuesday, Netanyahu took members of his security cabinet for a tour of the Israeli side, where they were briefed by the military on the situation.“We want peace, but are prepared for any scenario, and suggest that nobody tries us,” he said.Israel has sought to avoid direct involvement in the Syrian war, but acknowledges carrying out air strikes there to stop what it says are advanced arms deliveries to Hezbollah.

Israel says Iran, Syria ‘playing with fire’ but does not want escalation-'This is the most blatant and severe Iranian violation of Israeli sovereignty in the last years,' army spokesman states, after Iranian drone infiltrates and Israel retaliates-By AFP and TOI staff-FEB 11,18

The Israeli military said Saturday Iran and Syria were “playing with fire” but that it was not seeking an escalation after an Iranian drone infiltration resulted in large-scale Israeli air strikes inside Syria.Military spokesman Jonathan Conricus made the comments after Saturday’s confrontation, the most serious between arch foes Israel and Iran since the start of the Syrian civil war in 2011.Conricus told journalists in a phone conference that the Syrians and Iranians were “playing with fire” but Israel was “not looking to escalate the situation.”“This is the most blatant and severe Iranian violation of Israeli sovereignty in the last years,” Conricus said, referring to the Iranian drone entering Israeli airspace from Syria. “That’s why our response is as severe as it is.”Earlier Saturday, an Israeli F-16 fighter jet crashed after coming under fire from Syrian air defenses during attacks against “Iranian targets” in the war-torn country, a military spokesman said. The two pilots ejected. One was seriously injured and the second was lightly injured. The military said it later attacked 12 Syrian and Iranian targets in Syria in what it described as “large-scale” raids.

After downing of Israeli F-16, Iran warns: ‘Era of Israeli strikes over’-Tehran, Syria deny 'lies' that Iranian UAV that sparked northern clashes entered Israeli territory, insist it was gathering intel on IS; IDF issues footage of drone's destruction-By TOI staff and Agencies-FEB 11,18

Iran and Syria on Saturday denied that an unmanned drone Israel said it shot down violated the Jewish state’s airspace, calling Israeli allegations “lies” and saying the drone was on a regular mission gathering intelligence on Islamic State. The drone incident led to a barrage of Israeli airstrikes on Iranian and Syrian targets in Syria. Syria responded with heavy anti-aircraft fire that set off multiple warning sirens in Israel and managed to down one Israeli F-16 in Israeli territory, seriously wounding a pilot.A spokesman for Iran’s Supreme National Security Council said the Syrian response was “a clear warning to Israel. The statement said it was “a lie and misleading” to say the drone had entered Israel’s airspace.A statement on Central Military Media, which is allied with the Syrian military, called Israel’s attack on the drone site a “terrorist act,” warning of “a tough and serious response.”According to the Israeli military, the confrontation began with the drone entering Israeli airspace before being intercepted by a combat helicopter over the city of Beit Shean, near the Jordanian border. The military called the infiltration a “severe and irregular violation of Israeli sovereignty” and said Iran would be held responsible for its outcome, marking a dramatic escalation in tensions along Israel’s northern border. The IDF released video footage early Saturday afternoon of the drone’s destruction over Israeli territory as well as the subsequent IDF strike on its Iranian command vehicle in Syria.‪An Iranian UAV crossed into Israeli territory and was intercepted by an attack helicopter‬-Posted by Israel Defense Forces on Saturday, 10 February 2018-Israel said it later targeted at least 12 other sites “including three aerial defense batteries and four Iranian targets that are part of Iran’s military establishment in Syria,” according to a military statement.Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Bahram Ghasemi said Syria “has the right to legitimate self-defense. To cover their crimes in the region, Israeli officials are resorting to lies against other countries.”The deputy chief of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards warned, meanwhile, that his country could “bring hell upon the Zionist regime.”Brigadier General Hossein Salami refused to confirm to the Tasnim news agency that an Iranian drone had been shot down. “We cannot confirm this report on the drone because Israelis are liars … if Syrians confirm it, Iran will confirm it as well,” said Salami, according to a Reuters translation. But he warned that Tehran had the capability to destroy all US army bases in the region and to “bring hell upon the Zionist regime.”A Syrian military official said that his country would continue to respond in kind to all attacks on its soil.“Our defense systems hit a number of missiles as well as an Israeli aircraft that had been carrying out attacks south of the Damascus capital, to its west and on the outskirts of Homs,” the Syrian official told the Lebanese El Nashra news outlet. He added that the damage sustained from the Israeli aircraft fire was limited to property, but acknowledged that a number of soldiers had been injured as well. The Hezbollah-affiliated Al Mayadeen TV station claimed that the Syrian military had managed to intercept 70 percent of the dozens of missiles fired by Israel’s warplanes. The Israeli army responded to the drone infiltration with strikes on Iranian targets, including the drone’s launch site — the Tiyas Military Airbase near Palmyra — which the army said it hit in “a complicated surgical strike.” The strike reportedly targeted a facility housing the unmanned aircraft’s Iranian operators.Israeli warplanes flying over Syria met heavy anti-aircraft fire. The military said one of its pilots was seriously wounded as a result of an emergency evacuation from his F-16 jet targeted by missiles. The F-16 crashed in northern Israel. One pilot was evacuated to a hospital in serious condition. A second pilot was lightly wounded. If the plane was in fact shot down by enemy fire, it could mark the first such instance for Israel since 1982 during the first Lebanon war.Damascus residents celebrated the news.Wassim Elias, 39, a government employee, called it retribution for the many Israeli raids on Syrian soil before. “This earned the Syrian army and every Syrian citizen prestige. This is what we have always demanded,” he said.Firas Hamdan, 42, a public servant, said such Syrian responses will ensure no more Israeli attacks in Syria. “Such attacks should be confronted and the response should be tougher to give the Israelis a lesson.”A Syrian lawmaker, Feras Shehabi, said the response marked a “major shift in the balance of power in favor of Syria and the axis of resistance.” He said “Israelis must realize they have no longer superiority in the skies or on the ground.”Military spokesman Jonathan Conricus said the army had information on the drone’s mission, but would not go into details, saying only that it was “on a military mission sent and operated by Iranian military forces.”He warned that Syria and Iran were “playing with fire,” but stressed that his country was not seeking an escalation.“This is the most blatant and severe Iranian violation of Israeli sovereignty in the last years,” Conricus told journalists in a phone conference. “That’s why our response is as severe as it is.”The confrontation was the most serious between Israel and Iran since the start of the civil war in Syria in 2011.Diplomatic sources said Israel has appealed to Russia to intervene and prevent further escalation. Col. Reuven Ben-Shalom, a former Air Force pilot, said the fierce Israeli response was meant not only to counter the immediate threat but also to send “very clear messages” to show Iran how deep Israel’s knowledge was of its activity in Syria.“The fact that a drone like this is identified, tracked and intercepted so smoothly by the Israeli air force demonstrates our capabilities, demonstrates our resolve not to allow the breach of Israeli sovereignty,” he said. “I think it’s good that our enemies learn and understand these capabilities.”Israel has been warning of late of the increased Iranian involvement along its border in Syria and Lebanon. It fears Iran could use Syrian territory to stage attacks or create a land corridor from Iran to Lebanon that could allow it to transfer weapons more easily to Hezbollah. The Israeli Cabinet recently held a meeting on the Golan Heights near the border with Syria to highlight new threats, which are attributed to Iran’s growing confidence given Assad’s apparent victory in Syria thanks to their help.Agencies contributed to this report.

Hezbollah: Downing of Israeli F-16 the start of a ‘new strategic era’-Lebanese terror group praises 'vigilance' of Syrian army, says crashed jet marks 'decisive end to old arrangements'-By Agencies and TOI staff-FEB 11,18

Hezbollah hailed Syria’s air defenses after they reportedly downed an Israeli fighter jet on Saturday, saying it marked the start of a “new strategic era.”“This is the beginning of a new strategic era which puts an end to the violation of Syrian airspace and territory,” the Lebanese terror group said in a statement published by Lebanon’s ANI news agency.Hezbollah, an Iranian proxy backing Syrian President Bashar Assad in his country’s civil war, praised the “vigilance of the Syrian army,” and said it had “bravely blocked Israeli warplanes and downed an F-16.”It also said the Syrian response marked “a decisive end to old arrangements.”Hezbollah supporters were celebrating the incident on Saturday across from the Israeli city of Metulla, according to Israeli TV reports. The statement from Hezbollah came after its allies Iran and Syria denied that an unmanned drone Israel said it shot down violated the Jewish state’s airspace, calling Israeli allegations “lies,” and saying the drone was on a regular mission gathering intelligence on the Islamic State. The drone incident led to a barrage of Israeli airstrikes on Iranian and Syrian targets in Syria. UN agency for Palestinian refugees fundraises after US cuts-President Trump said last month that the Palestinians must return to peace talks in order to receive American aid money-By Edith M. Lederer-FEB 11,18-TOI

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The UN agency for Palestinian refugees said Friday it has embarked on a fundraising campaign that will likely include a ministerial-level donors conference next month to fill the gap left by the Trump administration’s sudden cut of tens of millions of dollars in funding.Scott Anderson, the agency’s West Bank operations director who just visited Washington, said the US hasn’t yet spelled out what reforms it wants to see implemented in order to restore the $65 million it is withholding now — and possibly millions more it may hold back in the future. The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees, known as UNRWA, was notified on Jan. 16 that the US was withholding $65 million of a planned $125 million installment and demanding a “fundamental re-examination” of the agency in addition to changes to its programs, which have been heavily criticized by Israel.UNRWA, which serves some 5 million Palestinian refugees and their descendants, had a budget of over $1 billion last year. The US gave $350 million of that amount and was the agency’s largest donor.US President Donald Trump told the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland on Jan. 25 that the Palestinians must return to peace talks to receive US aid money — a comment that raised alarm from the leaders of 21 international humanitarian groups who protested the administration’s “dangerous” link between aid and political objectives. But Israel’s UN Ambassador Danny Danon praised the US move, arguing that UNRWA misuses humanitarian aid to support propaganda against the Jewish state and perpetuate the Palestinians’ plight.Anderson, a former US Army major, stressed that UNRWA has no political role and is a UN humanitarian organization that helps the impoverished civilians and youngsters needing education. He responded to a questioner alleging that Palestinian students in UNRWA schools are taught that Israel doesn’t exist and isn’t on the map and that “Jews are hateful people” saying: “We certainly do not teach hatred for anyone and we do not teach that Israel does not exist.”Anderson added that he speaks to the Israeli army almost every day and a general tweeted last year “praising UNRWA for the work they’re trying to do around the curriculum.”But Trump’s action has sparked UNRWA’s biggest-ever financial crisis, and it is seeking $800 million for emergency operations in Syria, the West Bank and Gaza Strip this year.Anderson said “it’s far too early to talk about the consequences of underfunding,” stressing that “our operations remain viable.”But in the West Bank, he said Palestinians are quite concerned about the funding cuts as well as Trump’s declaration of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and continued Israeli settlement building.“They see this also, without perhaps defining it as such, as an existential threat to them and their future,” Anderson said. “It’s a combination of fear of the decisions that have been taken, fear of what may be coming in the future, and trepidation of what all that means to them at this point in time.”But Anderson said he wants to focus less on consequences and more on increasing income. In addition to the ministerial conference, he said UNRWA has launched a campaign for individual donors called “dignity is priceless.”Peter Mulrean, director of UNRWA’s UN office, said only Kuwait has increased funding, giving the agency an additional $900,000. But he said 15 other countries have “front-loaded” their yearly donations including the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Japan. Others have taken steps to do so including Switzerland, Finland, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Russia, Belgium, the Netherlands and Ireland.Mulrean said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has agreed to participate in the ministerial conference which will also focus on UNRWA’s accomplishments and cost-effective delivery of humanitarian assistance.By showing “that we are effective and get a good bang for the buck,” Mulrean said, “we hope (we) will make it all the more attractive for donor countries as well as others to step up and fund UNRWA.”Mulrean said UNRWA is also continuing to engage the United States and hopes it will participate in the funding conference.“We would like nothing more than to see the US continue as our single largest donor,” he said. “They are a hugely important country in the region and they have traditionally been a great leader in humanitarian assistance and we hope that will continue to be the case.”

Heading home, Pence insists 'no daylight' on North Korea-[Associated Press]-ZEKE MILLER-YAHOONEWS-February 10, 2018

ABOARD AIR FORCE TWO (AP) — Vice President Mike Pence's efforts to keep North Korea from stealing the show at the Winter Olympics proved short-lived, drowned out by images of the two Koreas marching and competing as one.And as the South appeared to look favorably on warming ties on the Korean Peninsula, Pence insisted Saturday "there is no daylight" among the United States and allies South Korea and Japan in intensifying pressure on the North over its nuclear and missile programs.Pence spent the days leading up to the Pyeongchang Olympics warning that the North was trying to "hijack the message and imagery" of the event with its "propaganda." But the North was welcomed with open arms to what South Korean President Moon Jae-in called "Olympic games of peace."It was the U.S. that appeared to be the one left in the cold, especially after the sister of the North Korean dictator extended an invitation from her brother for Moon to visit the North. That was the clearest sign yet of an expanding diplomatic opening opposed by the Trump administration.Pence said Moon updated him about the meeting he had with North Korean officials and "both of us reiterated to each other tonight that we will continue to stand strong and work in a coordinated way to bring maximum economic and diplomatic pressure to bear on North Korea."Moon was all smiles as he greeted Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, and Kim Yong Nam, the country's 90-year-old nominal head of state, for lunch at the presidential residence.Pence said Friday the U.S. would oppose talks between the two Koreas until the North agreed to open negotiations on ending its nuclear program. On his flight to Alaska on Saturday, the vice president said he left Asia "encouraged that we will continue to work very closely to continue and intensify the maximum pressure campaign" against North Korea. He said war had forged "the core of the bond" between the U.S. and South Korea and that helps explains "why there is no daylight and there will be no daylight" between the two.At the opening ceremonies Friday, Pence sat stone-faced in his seat as Moon and North Korean officials stood together with much of the stadium to applaud their joint team of athletes. White House officials stressed that Pence had applauded only for the American team, but Asia experts said the vice president's refusal to stand could be seen as disrespectful to the hosts.U.S. officials have been urging South Korea to be cautious in its rapprochement with the North. But North Korea's record on human rights and the growing threat from its nuclear weapons program appeared out of mind.Even Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who has shared the American skepticism of warming North-South relations and pressed Moon against falling for the North's "smile diplomacy," greeted Kim Yong Nam.At a Friday VIP reception for delegation leaders, Pence arrived late and stayed for just five minutes — and did not interact with the delegation from the North."The Koreans will think it's a mood kill," said Frank Jannuzi, an expert on East Asia at the Mansfield Foundation in Washington. He criticized the Trump administration for straining too hard to signal disgust of Kim Jong Un's government."The grievances that the world has about North Korea are very legitimate. But the Olympic moment that President Moon is trying to generate here is not a time to nurse those grievances," Jannuzi said. "It's a time to focus on messages of reconciliation and peace."As it turned out, with the two Koreas celebrating a moment of unity, the United States was left outmaneuvered by an adversary and out of step with an ally.___Associated Press writers Matthew Pennington and Jonathan Lemire in Washington contributed to this report.

Come visit: South Korea's leader invited to North Korea-[Associated Press]-FOSTER KLUG and KIM TONG-HYUNG-YAHOONEWS-February 10, 2018

PYEONGCHANG, South Korea (AP) — A rare invitation to Pyongyang for South Korea's president marked Day Two of the North Korean Kim dynasty's southern road tour Saturday, part of an accelerating diplomatic thaw that included some Korean liquor over lunch and the shared joy of watching a "unified" Korea team play hockey at the Olympics.Nothing has been settled on any trip north by South Korean President Moon Jae-in. But the verbal message to come at a "convenient time" from dictator Kim Jong Un, delivered by his visiting younger sister, Kim Yo Jong, is part of a sudden rush of improving feelings between the rivals during the Pyeongchang Olympics. The result: a heady, sometimes surreal, state of affairs in a South Korea that has seen far more threat than charm out of the North.Still, it wouldn't be South Korea if people weren't asking the perennial question when it comes to North Korea changing gears and showering its rival with apparent affection: What's in it for Pyongyang?Past "charm offensives" have been interpreted as North Korea trying to recoup from crippling sanctions on their nuclear program, or trying to drive a wedge between Seoul and its U.S. ally.A massive military parade in Pyongyang on the eve of the just-opened Pyeongchang Games has been used as Exhibit A by skeptics. In it, Kim Jong Un highlighted several huge intercontinental ballistic missiles, which were successfully flight tested three times last year and could reach deep into the U.S. mainland when perfected.Even so, there's also cautious optimism, or curiosity at least. If peace isn't imminent, a summit in Pyongyang between Moon and Kim Jong Un seems preferable to recent months' threats.Moon told Kim Yo Jong that the North and South should continue to build conditions for a summit, Moon spokesman Kim Eui-kyeom said. The U.S. and the North should quickly resume dialogue, he said. The lunch Saturday at Seoul's presidential mansion between Moon and Kim Yo Jong was the most significant diplomatic encounter between the rivals in years. The night before, Kim and other North Korean delegates attended the opening ceremony of the Olympics, watching a "unified" Korean team march under a banner showing an undivided Korean Peninsula. In a surreal mixture of dignitaries, the Olympic Stadium's VIP box included Kim Yo Jong and North Korea's nominal head of state, Kim Yong Nam, sitting above and behind U.S. Vice President Mike Pence and fellow hard-liner Shinzo Abe, Japan's prime minister. Pence and the Kims seemed to go out of their way not to acknowledge each other. That was not the case with Moon — either at the games, when he enthusiastically reached up to shake Kim Yo Jong's hand, or at the lunch the next day. South Korean television showed its smiling president entering a reception room Saturday and shaking hands with the North Koreans. The opening part of the talks was mostly about the weather: Pyeongchang was colder than Seoul, it was agreed."You went through a lot of trouble braving the cold until late" last night, Moon told the North Koreans, referring to their attendance at the frigid opening ceremonies. At the luncheon, Moon proposed a toast, calling for peace and "mutual prosperity" for the two Koreas. He then recalled his past visit to the North's Diamond Mountain resort, where he and his mother met his North Korean aunt during a temporary reunion of families separated by the 1950-53 Korean War.He also talked about visiting the North Korean border town of Kaesong, where the countries operated a joint factory park that had been a symbol of rapprochement before South Korea shut it down in 2016, after North Korea's fourth nuclear test."But I haven't been to Pyongyang," Moon said, according to comments provided by his office.Kim Yo Jong said she hopes to see Moon in Pyongyang soon so that he and her brother could "exchange views over many issues," which she said would make "North-South relations develop like yesterday was a long time ago.""We hope that President (Moon) could leave a legacy that would last over generations by leading the way in opening a new era of unification," she said. After sitting at a table, Kim Yo Jong placed a blue document folder in front of her. She later gave that folder to Moon, and Moon's office said it was a personal letter from her brother. Officials didn't reveal what was written in it.After meeting with Moon, the North Korean delegates boarded a bullet train to Gangneung, a coastal city hosting some Olympic events. Later Saturday night, they all joined the chief of the International Olympic Committee to watch the debut of the inter-Korean team in the women's ice hockey tournament. The Koreans were crushed by Switzerland, 8-0.Pence's office didn't directly address Kim's invitation to Moon. "The vice president is grateful that President Moon reaffirmed his strong commitment to the global maximum pressure campaign and for his support for continued sanctions," Pence spokeswoman Alyssa Farah said when asked about the developments. But Pence said that Moon shared "a bit" about his meeting with the North Koreans, and that he "appreciated him sharing his perspective on that.""I leave here very confident that we are going to continue to do the things we've known have to be done to continue to pressure North Korea to abandon their nuclear ambitions," Pence said.Moon is eager to use Kim Yo Jong's presence at the games to restore regular communication with North Korea and eventually pull it into nuclear talks. Many in Seoul, however, while interested in the warming high-level contacts, are also tempering expectations for a real breakthrough. There's worry, too, that the proposed summit Pyongyang may come with preconditions — a North Korean specialty. A big one could be a demand to cease the U.S.-South Korean war games that North Korea claims are preparation for invasion. But Moon, a liberal who has always wanted to engage the North, will also have to convince a good portion of his own people who are deeply wary about North Korean intentions.Throw in there the accusations that South Korea has had to arrange huge payouts for past meetings, and that these earlier encounters, while producing indelible images, have done little to slow North Korea's pursuit of nuclear weapons.Even if there are more meetings between the rivals after the Games, accomplishing something is another matter. South Korea wants a northern neighbor without nukes; North Korea vows to keep its weapons until the United States discards its "hostile" policies against the country.Hours before Friday's opening ceremony in Pyeongchang, Japan's Abe warned Moon not to fall for North Korea's "smile diplomacy" during the Olympics, according to Moon's office. Pence carried a similar message. They seem to have gone unheeded."Kim Jong Un is clearly serious about reviving talks with the South to improve relations," said Koh Yu-hwan, a North Korea expert at Seoul's Dongguk University and a security adviser to Moon."It seems clear," he said, "that the countries have entered a phase of restoring a regular level of contact."___Foster Klug is South Korea bureau chief for The Associated Press. EARTHQUAKES

EZEKIEL 37:7,11-14
7  So I prophesied as I was commanded: and as I prophesied, there was a noise, and behold a shaking, and the bones came together, bone to his bone.(POSSIBLE QUAKE BRINGS ISRAEL BACK TO LIFE-SO NOISE AND SHAKING-QUAKES WILL ALSO DESTROY ISRAELS ENEMIES)
11  Then he said unto me, Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel: behold, they say, Our bones are dried, and our hope is lost: we are cut off for our parts.
12  Therefore prophesy and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, O my people, I will open your graves, and cause you to come up out of your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel.
13  And ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I have opened your graves, O my people, and brought you up out of your graves,
14  And shall put my spirit in you, and ye shall live, and I shall place you in your own land: then shall ye know that I the LORD have spoken it, and performed it, saith the LORD.

MATTHEW 24:7-8
7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.
8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.

MARK 13:8
8 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom:(ETHNIC GROUP AGAINST ETHNIC GROUP) and there shall be earthquakes in divers places, and there shall be famines and troubles: these are the beginnings of sorrows.

LUKE 21:11
11 And great earthquakes shall be in divers places,(DIFFERNT PLACES AT THE SAME TIME) and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.

SHABBAT SHEKALIM - PREPARATION FOR PURIM-Shabbat Shekalim ("Sabbath [of] shekels" שבת שקלים) read in preparation for Purim, requests each adult male Jew contribute half of a Biblical shekel for the upkeep of the Tent of Meeting. The Torah portion Exodus 30:11-16 is read. This Shabbat takes place on the Shabbat before the 1st of the Hebrew calendar month of Adar, or on the 1st of Adar itself if it falls on Shabbat. HOARDING OF GOLD AND SILVER

JAMES 5:1-3
1 Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you.
2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten.
3 Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.

REVELATION 18:10,17,19
10 Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.(IN 1 HR THE STOCK MARKETS WORLDWIDE WILL CRASH)
17 For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off,
19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate.

EZEKIEL 7:19
19 They shall cast their silver in the streets, and their gold shall be removed:(CONFISCATED) their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD: they shall not satisfy their souls, neither fill their bowels: because it is the stumblingblock of their iniquity.

LUKE 2:1-3
1 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.
2  (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)
3  And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.

REVELATION 13:16-18

17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark,(MICROCHIP IMPLANT) or the name of the beast,(WORLD DICTATORS NAME INGRAVED ON YOUR SKIN OR TATTOOED ON YOU OR IN THE MICROCHIP IMPLANT) or the number of his name.(THE NUMBERS OF HIS NAME INGRAVED IN THE MICROCHIP IMLPLANT)-(ALL THESE WILL TELL THE WORLD DICTATOR THAT YOUR WITH HIM AND AGAINST KING JESUS-GOD)
18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast:(WORLD LEADER) for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.(6-6-6) A NUMBER SYSTEM (6006006)OR(60020202006)(SOME KIND OF NUMBER IMPLANTED IN THE MICROCHIP THAT TELLS THE WORLD DICTATOR AND THE NEW WORLD ORDER THAT YOU GIVE YOUR TOTAL ALLIGIENCE TO HIM AND NOT JESUS)(ITS AN ETERNAL DECISION YOU MAKE)(YOU CHOOSE YOUR OWN DESTINY)(YOU TAKE THE DICTATORS NAME OR NUMBER UNDER YOUR SKIN,YOUR DOOMED TO THE LAKE OF FIRE AND TORMENTS FOREVER,NEVER ENDING MEANT ONLY FOR SATAN AND HIS ANGELS,NOT HUMAN BEINGS).OR YOU REFUSE THE MICROCHIP IMPLANT AND GO ON THE SIDE OF KING JESUS AND RULE FOREVER WITH HIM ON EARTH.YOU CHOOSE,ITS YOUR DECISION.

1 KINGS 10:13-14
13  And king Solomon gave unto the queen of Sheba all her desire, whatsoever she asked, beside that which Solomon gave her of his royal bounty. So she turned and went to her own country, she and her servants.
14  Now the weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year was six hundred threescore and six talents of gold,

GENESIS 49:16-17

8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.

MARK 13:8
8 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom:(ETHNIC GROUP AGAINST ETHNIC GROUP) and there shall be earthquakes in divers places, and there shall be famines and troubles: these are the beginnings of sorrows.

LUKE 21:11
11 And great earthquakes shall be in divers places,(DIFFERNT PLACES AT THE SAME TIME) and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.

Analysis-As war clouds gather, northern storm looks more foreboding-Hamas disinterest in conflict despite humanitarian deterioration makes Israeli war with Hezbollah over Iran's missile manufacturing the more likely course-By Avi Issacharoff-FEB 8,18-TOI

Reading the headlines, there is a clear sense that Israel will soon enter a two-front war against Hamas in Gaza and against Hezbollah in Lebanon. Statements made by senior officials, lawmakers, ministers and military personnel, one after the other, seem to be prepping their respective constituencies for such a scenario. While tensions are rising on both fronts, it is the northern border that presents the more combustible situation and higher likelihood of actual conflict breaking out.The IDF’s large parachute drill and Beirut’s leaks to various media outlets about its Iranian-financed underground rocket factories both create a feeling that there is serious potential for escalation along the Blue Line.Israel has made it clear on more than one occasion that it does not intend to agree to the establishment of precision rocket factories in Lebanon.A similar facility in Syria no longer exists, as a result of an Israeli airstrike, according to Arab media outlets. But Iranian-backed efforts to build missiles remain in Lebanon and Yemen, where the country is backing the Houti rebels, though it officially denies this. While the Yemen concern is Saudi Arabia’s problem, efforts in Lebanon are of utmost concern to Jerusalem, and Israeli military action seems only a matter of time. This is where Hezbollah’s response comes into play. The Shiite organization has made it clear in the past that while it may let Israeli actions in Syria pass with no more than angry denunciations, when it comes to Lebanese soil, there is no such grace. Rather, there is a distinct possibility that an Israeli attack would invite a Hezbollah military response.-The suspected Iranian base located 50km from the Syrian-Israeli border. Both sides have made it clear that they are capable of causing serious damage to the other and both are right. The question now is whether either side will choose to blink — Israel by ignoring Hezbollah’s missile factories or Hezbollah by ignoring an Israeli attack.-No interest from Hamas-Things are a bit less explosive in Gaza, where, though there is a growing humanitarian crisis, war is apparently not necessarily on the horizon. The distress there is indeed severe — apparently unprecedented, even for the coastal enclave. On Monday, three more medical clinics were closed due to electricity shortages, and more than 15 others are only functioning partially. With the unemployment rate at roughly 46% and more than half of the population — 1 million people — requiring food aid from human rights organizations to survive the month, Gaza’s economic collapse, as Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot stated Sunday, is only a matter of time.It is true that the more severe the humanitarian crisis in the Strip, the greater the danger of a violent outbreak, since Hamas has less to lose. And yet, Hamas still has no interest in war.The terror group does not want a violent confrontation, and that has been made clear from its actions in recent months. Hamas has reportedly been cracking down on Salafi groups in the enclave, in an effort to prevent additional rocket fire at Israel. The endless Israeli jabbering on this issue has created a feeling in Hamas that Jerusalem might be the one to make the first military move as it has in past wars. For this reason, Hamas headquarters have been evacuated and the terror group announced a “state of emergency” in an attempt to create as few targets as possible for the Israeli side to hit.And again, in almost every conversation, sources in the Gaza Strip say that despite the severe economic situation, Hamas is not interested in an escalation in violence.

Space roadster overshoots Mars, now headed for asteroid belt-Elon Musk confirms Tesla launched aboard world's most powerful rocket went beyond trajectory, still hails flight as success-By Marcia Dunn-TOI-FEB 8,18

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (AP) — The world’s first space sports car is cruising toward the asteroid belt, well beyond Mars.SpaceX chief Elon Musk confirmed the new, more distant route for his rocketing Tesla Roadster. The red electric convertible was the unorthodox cargo aboard his company’s brand new Falcon Heavy rocket during a test flight on Tuesday. With the successful launch, the Heavy became the most powerful rocket flying today. And Musk’s Roadster became the fastest car ever, hurtling off the planet and zooming away on a route that will now take it all the way to the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.Late Tuesday, Musk said the final firing of the rocket’s upper stage put his car on a more distant trajectory than anticipated. Not only is it headed toward Mars, but almost to the dwarf planet Ceres in the asteroid belt.A mannequin dressed in a “real deal” SpaceX spacesuit — dubbed “Starman” by Musk — is strapped in behind the car’s wheel.Usually test flights carry nothing of value, like concrete blocks. Musk found that “boring” and put his cherry-red Tesla on top. He’s in charge of the car-maker as well as the private space company.Images of the exposed Roadster and “Starman” — named after a David Bowie song — against the backdrop of our blue planet, were burning up the internet long after Tuesday’s launch.Third burn successful. Exceeded Mars orbit and kept going to the Asteroid Belt. pic.twitter.com/bKhRN73WHF— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) February 7, 2018-“I think it looks so ridiculous and impossible. You can tell it’s real because it looks so fake, honestly,” Musk said Tuesday night. “It’s still tripping me out.”The Roadster is in an even more elongated orbit now that stretches from Earth on one end, all the way to the neighborhood of Ceres on the other. The original plan had the car traveling only as far as Mars, coming close to the red planet but hopefully not nicking it. If it survives the swarming asteroid belt, the car and its occupant are expected to continue orbiting for millions if not billions of years.Like so many others, NASA astronaut Ricky Arnold was awe-struck by the live-streaming of “Starman” and his ride. Arnold is preparing for his own ride to the International Space Station next month.“Perfect day for a cruise in a ragtop,” Arnold tweeted, offering congratulations to SpaceX. “Awesome! At this speed, two hands on the steering wheel please #Starman.”And Buzz Aldrin, second man to step onto the moon, also celebrated after watching the rocket soar “from my favorite launch pad.” The Heavy lifted off from the same spot as NASA’s now-retired but more powerful Saturn V moon rockets and space shuttles. The Heavy is a combo of three Falcon 9s, that SpaceX uses to ship space station supplies and launch satellites for its customers.Mars is driving all of Musk’s space efforts.Musk said he does not plan to fly people on the Heavy — that will mainly be used to launch supersize satellites. But he is accelerating development of an even bigger rocket for deep-space crews — “a beast.”His overriding goal is to establish a city on Mars, sending people there in a flotilla of SpaceX spaceships launched by colossal SpaceX rockets. Before dashing off to the red planet, Musk said he would want to try out this spaceship in orbit around Earth — possibly in three to four years with the supersize rocket — and then the moon.At a news conference Tuesday night, Musk told reporters that as early as next year, he may begin test flights of the mega spaceship in Texas. These short hops would take the ship several miles high and then come back down for a landing. It is the landing part that is especially hard, he noted, especially at the speed the craft will be traveling when it comes in for a touchdown on another planet.Tuesday’s success of the Heavy provides a confidence boost to these future plans, Musk said. Two of the three first-stage boosters flew back for side-by-side landings; the third was lost at sea.Rocket recycling is the key to SpaceX’s launch cost-cutting strategy. The Falcon Heavy is price-listed at $90 million, a bargain in the business of rockets. The president of the Mars Society, a space advocacy group intent on exploring and settling Mars, cheered SpaceX’s achievement — and reduced price. “This is a revolution,” Robert Zubrin said in a statement. “The naysayers have been completely refuted.”In the meantime, with the Heavy demo out of the way, Musk said SpaceX is putting its commercial crew effort for NASA front and center. He said the company is still on track to launch astronauts in a SpaceX Dragon capsule, aboard a Falcon 9 rocket, at the end of this year.SpaceX is competing with Boeing to be the first to send Americans into orbit from US soil again, something that has not happened since NASA’s last shuttle flight. US astronauts have been riding Russian rockets to get to the space station, costing taxpayers tens of millions of dollars a seat, since the shuttle program ended in 2011.Musk noted that SpaceX used only internal funds to finance the Heavy. He is hoping that will encourage other companies and countries “to raise their sights and say, hey, we can do bigger and better, which is great.”“We want a new space race,” he said.

Bahrain accuses Iran of training oil pipeline bombing suspects-Manama arrests four men who allegedly blew up pipe connecting country to Saudi Arabia, claims Revolutionary Guards instructed them-TOI-FEB 8,18-By AFP

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Bahrain said Wednesday that it had arrested four men suspected of bombing a Saudi Aramco oil pipeline, accusing Iran of training and arming two of the suspects. The blast on November 10 of last year cut off the pipeline linking Bahrain’s Bapco refinery with oil giant Aramco’s main pumping station in neighboring Saudi Arabia’s Dhahran province.Authorities at the time blamed “terrorists” for the explosion. The interior ministry said Wednesday that four Bahraini men, aged 23 to 27, had been arrested for “plotting” and “remotely bombing” the pipeline outside the capital Manama. Two of the four had received “intensive training at the Iranian Revolutionary Guard camps with the help of the leading fugitive terrorists living in Iran,” it said in a statement.Three others remain at large, according to the statement. The interior ministry accused all seven of belonging to the “February 14 Coalition” — a reference to a protest movement that emerged in 2011 against the Al-Khalifa dynasty, which has ruled Bahrain for more than two centuries.Protests have continued to rock the Sunni-ruled, Shiite-majority kingdom, as authorities escalate their clampdown on political dissent, frequently accusing opposition figures of links to Shiite Iran.Since 2011, hundreds of Bahrainis have been stripped of their citizenship and protesters and opposition leaders jailed or driven into exile.Bahrain accuses Tehran of supporting the opposition in a bid to overthrow the government, but Tehran denies involvement.Manama has drawn harsh criticism from leading rights groups, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, over its treatment of the opposition.A key ally of Washington located between regional rivals Saudi Arabia and Iran, Bahrain is home to the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet.

More troops sent to West Bank following uptick in attacks-Forces to operate primarily in areas near Nablus and Jenin, as manhunt for Ariel stabber continues; several battalions also to be placed on stand-by-By Jacob Magid-TOI-8 February 2018

The Israel Defense Forces on Wednesday said that it was deploying additional battalions to the West Bank as reinforcements, following a recent uptick in terror attacks that have taken place over the Green Line, as well as a manhunt for a terror suspect. The forces will operate primarily in the northern West Bank, where the primary points of friction have been, the army said. Several battalions will also be placed on stand-by.Hours earlier, clashes broke out between Palestinians and Israeli troops in the southern West Bank town of Halhul, as troops raided the home of the terrorist who stabbed a security guard in Gush Etzion’s Karmei Tzur settlement and then was shot dead.On Monday, a terrorist fatally stabbed 29-year-old Rabbi Itamar Ben-Gal outside the settlement of Ariel. The suspect, 19-year-old Abed al-Karim Assi, managed to flee the scene and remains at large. On Tuesday, troops raided two homes in Nablus, including one reportedly belonging to Assi’s father, amid a large-scale manhunt for the suspect. One Palestinian was killed and 47 others were injured in ensuing clashes with IDF soldiers as they left the area, according to the Palestinian health ministry.Ben-Gal’s widow, Miriam gave a video statement on Wednesday evening, saying that retribution for her husband’s murder could only come from building their settlement of Har Bracha into a large city.“They (the terrorists) should know that such actions only lead to the further development of the Jewish people, to the strengthening of the Jewish people in the Land of Israel,” she said.Ben-Gal’s murder came less than a month after Raziel Shevach was gunned down by Palestinian terrorists outside the northern West Bank outpost of Havat Gilad. On Tuesday, Israeli troops shot dead Ahmad Nassar Jarrar, the suspected ringleader of a terror cell responsible for the Israeli father of six’s murder during a pre-dawn raid in the village of Yamoun, near Jenin.Judah Ari Gross contributed to this report.

Iran ‘accountable’ for ailing US prisoner’s health — White House-Trump administration calls for 'immediate and unconditional release' of 81-year-old Baquer Namazi, accused of espionage and suffering from heart problems-By AFP-TOI-8 February 2018

WASHINGTON — The White House on Wednesday warned Iran that it will be held responsible for the health of 81-year-old American citizen Baquer Namazi, who was recently sent back to prison after medical treatment.Namazi and his son Siamak were sentenced to 10 years in prison for “espionage and collaboration with the American government” in October — a charge denied by the family and dismissed by US authorities. The elder Namazi “has been hospitalized four times in the last year and continues to suffer from life-threatening heart problems,” a statement from the White House read.“He remains in urgent need of sustained medical care, and the United States government holds Iran fully accountable for his well-being.”“The Trump administration again calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all unjustly detained and missing United States citizens in Iran, including Baquer Namazi, his son Siamak Namazi, Xiyue Wang, and Robert Levinson.”Namazi was rushed to a hospital on January 15 — the fourth time in the last year — after a “severe” drop in his blood pressure, and irregular heartbeat. On Sunday, Iranian authorities granted Namazi, a dual US-Iranian citizen, leave from prison on humanitarian grounds. In September, he underwent emergency heart surgery to install a pacemaker. His lawyer, Jared Genser, said then that under the terms of the leave, he could not leave Iran. His son, a business consultant and also a dual national, is also still in jail.Wang, a Chinese-American researcher from Princeton University, has also been given a 10-year sentence for espionage.Former FBI agent and CIA contractor Levinson went missing in March 2007 after apparently traveling to an Iranian coastal island.Washington and Tehran have had no diplomatic relations since April 1980, in the wake of the Islamic revolution, and tensions have sharpened under Trump after a brief warming under his predecessor, Barack Obama.

Hamas: PA ‘lead’ helped IDF track terrorist behind rabbi’s killing-Terror group's military wing slams security coordination with Israel as 'a clear act of collaboration'-By Khaled Abu Toameh-TOI-FEB 8,18

The military wing of Hamas, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, on Wednesday claimed that the Palestinian Authority provided the lead that helped Israel track down and kill Ahmed Jarrar, the terrorist suspected of heading the cell that killed Rabbi Raziel Shevach last month.Meanwhile, Hamas and other Palestinian groups renewed their demand for an end to security coordination between the PA and Israel.Jarrar, a member of Hamas’s military wing, was killed in a shootout with the IDF on Tuesday in the village of Al Yamoun in the Jenin area.A video posted on the Al Qassam website claimed that immediately after Shevach was shot dead on January 9 in the northern West Bank, Israel and the PA began working together to identify the perpetrators.“The Palestinian Authority provided the lead to the enemy,” the video charged. It said that after becoming aware of the PA’s collaboration with Israel, Jarrar began preparing himself for a “confrontation” with the IDF.According to the Al Qassam video, Jarrar managed to evade capture during an IDF raid on January 17.During that operation, Jarrar’s cousin, who is also called Ahmed, was shot dead. The Hamas group claimed that despite a manhunt conducted by Israel and the PA, Jarrar afterwards managed to evade capture at least twice.A senior PA security official in Ramallah strongly denied the Hamas claims as “fabrications” and “lies.”Following the killing of Jarrar, several Palestinian groups, including Hamas, renewed their call to halt security coordination between the PA security forces and Israel.Hamas’s political leaders and spokesmen have thus far refrained from holding the PA responsible for the killing of Jarrar, although they continue to demand an end to security coordination with Israel. The Al Qassam video marked the first attempt by Hamas to directly link the PA to the killing of Jarrar. The PA has long faced criticism from many Palestinians over continued security coordination with Israel.“Security coordination (with Israel) is a crime against our people and resistance and a clear act of collaboration,” said Ismail Radwan, a senior Hamas official in the Gaza Strip. “Security coordination must end.”Another top Hamas official, Ismail Al Ashkar, said that his movement was convinced that security coordination between the PA and Israel had “played a major role” in tracking down Jarrar.“Our people and our factions need to take a stance against this security coordination,” Al Askar added.Abu Mujahed, spokesman for the Palestinian Resistance Committees, a coalition of various terror groups in the Gaza Strip, claimed that were it not for the security coordination, Israel would not have been able to track down and kill Jarrar.“Security coordination with Israel must end for once and for all,” Abu Mujahed told the Hezbollah-affiliated Al Mayadeen TV station.Palestinian Islamic Jihad and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine also repeated their appeal to the PA to end all forms of security cooperation with Israel in wake of the killing of Jarrar.PLO and Fatah leaders who met in Ramallah recently recommended that the Palestinians suspend security coordination with Israel. The PA government announced on Tuesday that it has formed a committee whose goal is to devise plans for terminating relations with Israel on all levels, including security and economic ties.

Shin Bet holding ‘gentle’ talks with far-rightists to head off revenge attacks-Defense official says not especially concerned about Jewish extremists retaliating following terror attacks that killed Raziel Shevach and Itamar Ben-Gal-By Jacob Magid-TOI-8 February 2018

In an effort to calm growing tensions, the Shin Bet security agency is initiating “gentle conversations” with far-right activists who have been demanding a harsher military response to the Palestinian terror attacks that left two West Bank rabbis dead within the span of a month.A defense official said that despite the recent uptick in Palestinian violence, and Israeli calls for “revenge,” there was no particular concern among the defense establishment that rogue settler attacks may soon follow.“However, we’re holding gentle conversations with activists in an attempt to lower the flames and calm tensions,” the official told The Times of Israel, adding that such dialogue is being held in consultation with social services.“Now is not the time for ‘price-tag’ attacks,” he said, referring to offenses carried out by Jewish extremists in retaliation for actions and policies against the settlement enterprise.“We are reminding them not to take the law into their own hands,” the official added.Over a dozen far-right activists have been arrested during protests held throughout the West Bank following the Monday murder of Itamar Ben-Gal.The demonstrators have been blocking roads to Palestinian traffic near Nablus and Ramallah, demanding that the army re-institute checkpoints at the entrance to those cities. At one such demonstration on Tuesday, protesters hurled rocks at Palestinian cars, moderately injuring one passenger. Some critics have accused Israeli security agencies of handling far-right extremists with kid gloves compared to how they treat Palestinians.Tzvi Succot, who heads the far-right Otzma Yehudit organization that has been organizing many of these demonstrations, was among those detained on Monday, hours after Ben-Gal’s murder. He refuted the defense officials’ claim that any “gentle conversations” had been held with the activists. “They called me a few weeks ago, but there definitely have not been ‘conversations,'” Succot said, adding that he had received a restraining order, temporarily banning him from the West Bank, following his arrest. At the funeral for Raziel Shevach last month, dozens of mourners interrupted Education Minister Naftali Bennett’s eulogy with calls for “revenge.”The Jewish Home party leader attempted to calm the crowd by saying that “the only revenge is to keep building.”Revenge attacks have ranged from graffiti and rock throwings to deadly incidents, such as the killing of East Jerusalem teen Muhammed Abu Khdeir in 2014 in retaliation for the killing of three Israeli teens.

Palestinian who tried sneaking into settlement in army uniform turns himself in-Suspect arrives at Civil Administration headquarters after evading capture in Itamar last week-By Jacob Magid-TOI-FEB 8,18

A Palestinian suspect who managed to avoid IDF capture after attempting to infiltrate an Israeli settlement last month wearing an army uniform turned himself in to security forces, the army said Wednesday. On January 28, soldiers near the settlement of Itamar spotted men dressed in army uniforms trying to enter the north West Bank community. The troops detained one of the suspects, but the second one managed to evade capture.During searches of the area, forces uncovered binoculars, when the captured the first suspect. Later, they found several prepared Molotov cocktails as well.It was not clear if there was a terror motive in the incident.Earlier Wednesday, an Israeli security guard was lightly wounded when a Palestinian assailant attacked him with a knife at the entrance to the settlement of Karmei Tzur in Gush Etzion. The terrorist opened the door to the guard post at the entrance to the community, and stabbed one of the guards in the palm of his hand.A second guard present at the scene shot the assailant and killed him, according to the Israel Defense Forces. He was later identified by Palestinian officials as Hamzeh Yousef Zamaareh, 19, from the town of Halhul, near Hebron. On Monday, a terrorist fatally stabbed 29-year-old Rabbi Itamar Ben-Gal outside the settlement of Ariel.Israeli forces are still hunting for the killer.

EU relieved after Merkel clinches grand coalition deal-By Eric Maurice-EUOBSERVER

BRUSSELS, 7. Feb, 17:52-Germany's Christian Democratic Union (CDU/CSU) and Social Democratic Party (SPD) concluded a coalition agreement on Wednesday (7 February), taking a step closer to ending a five-month long period of political limbo in Berlin. The deal, under which the two partners will share what they considered as the most crucial ministries for themselves, will however to be approved by SPD members in the coming weeks.Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats will occupy the ministries of interior, defence, agriculture, economy and health. The sensitive interior portfolio - with the management of migration policies - was expected to go to Horst Seehofer, the leader of the CSU, the CDU's Bavarian branch. Seehofer, a hardliner, has been one of the main opponents of Merkel's migration policy since 2015.Peter Altmeier, one of Merkel's closest allies, and finance minister since September, was expected to become economy and energy minister. The finance ministry has been attributed to the SPD, with Hamburg's mayor Olaf Schorf being the favourite for the post, also as vice-chancellor.Social Democrats will also get the ministries of labour and social affairs, justice, as well as foreign affairs for Martin Schulz, Merkel's opponent in the elections last September.Schulz meanwhile will quit the SPD leadership and be replaced by Andrea Nahles, the leader of the party's group in the Bundestag. The 177-page coalition agreement was concluded on Wednesday morning after a night of discussions on the final sticking point, job contracts and doctors pay."It was intensive negotiations in the truest sense of the word," Merkel said Wednesday afternoon. She said the agreement would give Germany "at last a government, but a stable one."Schulz insisted that the coalition programme would offer "an improvement of the life conditions of the people."-'Good news for Europe'-The deal was welcome with relief in the EU."I'm completely happy with the coalition agreement," EU finance commissioner Pierre Moscovici told journalists in Brussels."It's not only good news for Germany, but also for Europe," he said, adding that a "stable, solid, ambitious, pro-European government" would allow the EU take decisions on the future of the eurozone."There is clearly a very strong pro-European will there," he noted.Martin Selmayr, the powerful chief of cabinet for European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker, noted that the agreement contained "a strong Europe chapter, numerous committed references to the EU framework in all sectorial chapters."The agreement, which supports investment capacities for the EU, as well as the appointment of an SPD finance minister, are considered as a boost for French president Emmanuel Macron's plans.-'No copy-paste' from Macron-The EU is more likely to succeed "when Paris, Brussels and Berlin are pulling together," said Moscovici, adding that there were "common concepts" between the three capitals."This will open this famous window of opportunity which will require from all of us a very intense period of work," he added. But debates at EU level are likely to still depend on priorities and personalities within the grand coalition's parties."Germany is now ready to sit at the table and to negotiate," said Manfred Weber, the leader of the centre-right EPP group in the European Parliament. But Weber, who hails from the CSU, insisted that "it doesn't mean copy and paste of the Sorbonne speech" - the speech in which Macron laid out his ideas last September. He noted that "there is a French perspective to reform Europe," and that all "have to seat together and find a common understanding."

Opinion-'Operation Olive Branch' for self-defence and regional stability-By Faruk Kaymakci-EUOBSERVER

BRUSSELS, 6. Feb, 13:48-Entering its seventh year, the conflict in Syria continues to be a direct threat to international security and regional stability.Turkey's land border with Syria and Iraq, measuring 1,295 km in length, requires Turkey to be alert to the developments within its neighbors and vigilant towards the security threats emanating from these countries.Turkey's national security is under the direct threat of Syria-based terrorist organisations, among which Deash and the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK)/Kurdistan Communities Union (KCK)'s Syria-affiliate Kurdish Democratic Union party (PYD)/People's Protection Unit (YPG) are at the forefront. The recent increase in rocket attacks and harassment fires (more than 700 so far), directed at Hatay and Kilis provinces of Turkey from the Afrin region of Syria, which is under the control of the PKK/KCK/PYD-YPG terrorist organisation, resulted in the death of scores of civilians and soldiers. On the other hand, the recent advance of Deash terrorists into the Afrin region from other parts of Syria has heightened the risk of Deash elements infiltrating the Turkey-Syria border and targeting the security of Turkey as well as EU countries. It must be underscored that these terrorist groups are also a direct threat to the unity of Syria and are a main source of instability which impedes civilians to reside peacefully in their habitats. The PYD/YPG's real intention is not to fight Deash or protect Kurds and Yazidis. Their real aim is to force demographic change and create separatist enclaves or terrorist hide-outs in the north of Syria.Measured and proportionate-In countering the threat of terrorism, Turkey's response has always been measured and proportionate, in line with its international obligations and based on the right of self-defence.As such, Turkey has successfully concluded the 'Operation Euphrates Shield' in 2017, through which 2,015 square kilometres of land was cleared from Deash and a safe zone free of terror could be established, enabling thousands of displaced Syrians to return home.To counter the recent surge of terrorist incursions and attacks on its territory, Turkey initiated the 'Operation Olive Branch' on 20 January 2018.'Operation Olive Branch' is not conducted against the Kurds of Syria.Neither does Turkey have an ulterior motive of invading or remaining in Syria. It must be underlined that Turkey, unequivocally committed to the territorial integrity and political unity of Syria, has undertaken this measure with a view to reinforcing these basic principles and contributing to the efforts of the international community to reach a political solution in the framework of the Geneva peace talks.Furthermore, 'Operation Olive Branch' is aimed at ensuring our border security, neutralising terrorists in Afrin and preventing a demographic change in the north of the country, helping Syrians to return to their homes as well as facilitating humanitarian assistance to the liberated areas through secured corridors. As such, the operation targets only terrorists and their hideouts, shelters, emplacements, weapons, vehicles and equipment. All precautions are taken to avoid collateral damage to the civilian population.Turkey and the EU have common security interests when it comes to eradicating the terrorist threat emanating from the region and alleviating the migratory pressure caused by the mass influx of displaced millions fleeing bloodshed. It must be emphasised that Turkey remains staunchly committed to finding a genuine political solution to the conflict in Syria as outlined in the Geneva communique and the respective UN security council resolution (2254), and will continue its efforts to make this a reality as soon as possible. In the meantime, it is vital that Turkey, an EU candidate and NATO ally, has the backing of its European allies and friends in addressing its legitimate security concerns, which contributes to the overall security and stability of the EU and beyond.Faruk Kaymakci is Turkey's ambassador to the EU

Feb, 18:55-Catalan separatists leaders are discussing a plan that would allow exiled Carles Puigdemont to keep influence in the region even if he cannot be elected president of the government.Puigdemont met a delegation of the Republican Left of Catalonia (ERC) party, in Brussels on Sunday, and deputies of his Together for Catalonia (JxCat) party on Monday to discuss the plan.He was also due to meet envoys from the Popular Unity Candidacy (CUP), the third separatist party in parliament.Under the plan, Puigdemont would be sworn in by the Association of Municipalities for Independence (AMI), a group of Catalan town councils, to form a "legitimate and symbolic" government in Brussels. In the meantime, the Catalan parliament in Barcelona would elected a leader of the regional executive, which under the plan separatists refer to as an "operative" presidency.According to Catalan media, Puigdemont would prefer changing the regional law in order to create a 'council of the republic', which he would chair from Brussels in parallel to the regular Catalan government in Barcelona.Puigdemont, who fled to Belgium in October to escape charges of sedition, rebellion and embezzlement over an unilateral independence process, is the only candidate for the position. But the Spanish supreme court said that he could be elected only if he is physically present in the parliament, with an authorisation from judges.Last week, the speaker of the parliament, Roger Torrent, of the ERC, postponed the vote a few hours before it was due on 30 January.-Make Puigdemont happy-The plan is the solution found by JxCat and ERC to unblock he situation, but "it will be very difficult to implement," said Oriol Bartomeus, a political science professor at Barcelona's Autonomous University."The question is how Puigdemont can perform this symbolic presidency," he told EUobserver."Will he have regular meeting with the government by Skype? In the end, it will be impossible for him to really control the government in Barcelona," he said.Torrent officially blamed the Spanish government for preventing the Catalan government electing Puigdemont. But behind the scenes, the two parties have been increasingly at odds, with ERC putting pressure in JxCat to let another candidate step in.In a text message to a deputy, caught by a TV camera, Puigdemont said that he was "sacrificed" and that his bid was "over".The symbolic presidency plan is to make Puigdemont "happy", Bartomeus noted."It's to avoid an open confrontation inside the separatist bloc and have Puigdemont fade away with time," he said.'Sounds good' While JxCat's spokesman Eduard Pujol said that the talks were "going in the right direction", ERC's spokesman Sergi Sabria said the plan "sounds good" to his party. He said it would "give value to the legitimate government in Brussels, and [would] be compatible with finishing with [article] 155, return Puigdemont and form a government."Article 155 is the Spanish constitution provision under which the Spanish government dismissed the Catalan government, took over the region's administration and organised elections in December, in reaction to the declaration of independence on 27 October. The government has said it would stop applying article 155 when the situation is back to normal. On Monday, the general coordinator of the ruling Popular Party (PP), Fernando Martinez-Maillo, said that the "only valid" government would be one that comes from the parliament and applies the laws."There can be no symbolic investiture," he said.If Puigdemont's presidency is purely symbolic and the elected Catalan government follows the law, "maybe the government will let it go," Bartomeus said, adding that it would also depend on "the PP's electoral needs".Separatists will have first to find a new candidate to lead the regional government.

With Puigdemont in Belgium and ERC leader Oriol Junqueras in prison since October, neither party has an obvious candidate to propose."We have to go down the list to find somebody who is not charged or about to be charged," Bartomeus pointed out."The race is quite open and quite strange," he said.

EU draws red line on UK customs deal By Andrew Rettman-EUOBSERVER

BRUSSELS, 6. Feb, 09:28-Britain cannot keep its EU trade perks if it quits the customs union, the European Commission has warned as Brexit talks resume."Without a customs union and outside the single market, barriers to trade in goods and services are unavoidable," the EU's chief negotiator, Michel Barnier, said in London on Monday (5 January)."Time has come [for the UK] to make a choice," he said.Barnier spoke after a brief meeting with British prime minister Theresa May and her Brexit negotiator, David Davis, ahead of the first round of talks this year. The French politician added that Britain would have to abide by all EU laws during a transition period after it left the European Union in March next year."Everyone has to play by the same rules during this transition," he said.Davis told British TV afterward that the UK would definitely quit the EU customs bloc. "It's perfectly clear what we want to do and there's no doubt about it … we're leaving the customs union, but we're aiming for a good future for Britain," he said.May's spokesman had also said before the Barnier meeting that "it is not government policy to be members of 'the' customs union or 'a' customs union".The spokesman said the UK wanted a "customs partnership" or a "highly streamlined customs arrangement" instead. The "partnership" would give the UK a unique right to negotiate free-trade deals with other countries, such as the US, but would see it mirror EU requirements for imports at British borders. The "streamlined arrangement" would see it quit the customs union, while using high-tech gadgets to speed up the resulting new customs formalities. The Brexit talks will take place in Brussels for the rest of the week.Barnier said he expected May to put forward a detailed document on her customs plan "in the next few weeks" ahead of an EU summit dealing with Brexit in March.Any customs deal will have to honour the UK's existing pledge not to introduce security checks on its land border with Northern Ireland."If the UK wants to put up barriers to trade that is their choice … our priority will be to ensure there is no border put up again on the island of Ireland," Guy Verhofstadt, the European Parliament's Brexit negotiator said on Monday.-Squeeze on May-May's room for manoeuvre is also being tightened by Conservative Party politics.Hardline eurosceptics, such as Tory MP Jacob Rees Mogg and foreign minister Boris Johnson, are threatening to oust her from office if she gives in to EU demands.Asked by UK press on Monday if he was interested in her job, Rees Mogg said: "I'm very happy as a backbencher and what I do want is Mrs May to stay prime minister".But he added: "If you look at Mrs May, it seems to be quite clear she does it because it's her duty to do it. I don't get the impression that it's a lot of fun for her. It's hard work".He also criticised her "gloomy" election campaign, in which the party lost its parliamentary majority, last year.A UK leadership contest would slow EU talks as the clock ticks to Brexit, increasing the risk of the UK leaving without any deal in place.-Banking cliff-Andrew Bailey, the head of the British banking regulator, the Financial Conduct Authority, said that would do untold damage on both sides of the English Channel."There's a range of operational issues arising from Brexit which, if not tackled, will create financial stability risks and issues for both the UK and the European Union," he told press in London on Monday. He said there were €13.6 trillion worth of financial derivatives contracts that extended beyond March 2019 and 36 million EU and UK insurance policies whose validity could be put in doubt.Bailey said British banking authorities ought to sign bilateral "memorandums" with those in other EU financial centres, such as Berlin, Frankfurt, and Paris, to work together no matter what happens in the Brexit process."I think this point is increasingly understood on both sides. It's not a matter of scaremongering to get negotiating advantage," he said.
