A 30-year-old Brooklyn man was arrested for allegedly setting fire to a bus decorated with Jewish symbols in the New York borough.Jackson Joseph was charged with arson Monday after being identified in a surveillance video, WABC-TV reported. Joseph, from the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, is accused of setting the so-called mitzvah bus alight when it was parked June 26 in the Crown Heights neighborhood.He has not been charged with a hate crime, even though the bus was covered with Jewish symbols.Brooklyn artist Lev “Leviticus” Schieber uses his bus as a studio and gallery for his paintings in Crown Heights, as well as at festivals and parades. He wanted it to be fair and act according to Muslim teachings but he didn’t want to have to call a religious hotline and wait endlessly for an answer.Now he lined up behind a handful of people standing in front of a booth set up at one of the main Cairo subway stations — and 10 minutes later he got his answer.Fatwas are religious edicts or pronouncements, often on major issues related to Islamic teachings. But they also provide guidance on matters of everyday life, including starting up a grocery store or any other private business, whom to marry and whether it is permissible under Islam to accept banks’ interest rates.The booth in Cairo’s al-Shohada subway station was set up earlier this month by Egypt’s Al-Azhar, the Sunni Muslim world’s foremost religious institution, with the idea to offer Muslim worshipers a way to plug in fast to Islamic teachings — even while commuting to work. More booths are planned for later, at other subway stops.The idea, however, is also part of a broader push to correct misconceptions and misinterpretations of religious texts seen as fostering Islamic militancy in the country.The move came after militants killed at least 28 security personnel in two separate attacks in early July in the restive Sinai Peninsula and near some of Egypt’s most famous pyramids outside of Cairo. I don’t know,” he said. “I’m sure everyone that’s tried this has been unique in some ways, but again we’re trying to follow very logically. We’re thinking about what the right end state is. And we’re trying to work with the parties very quietly to see if there’s a solution.”“And,” he went on, “there may be no solution, but it’s one of the problem sets that the president asked us to focus on. A 30-year-old Brooklyn man was arrested for allegedly setting fire to a bus decorated with Jewish symbols in the New York borough.Jackson Joseph was charged with arson Monday after being identified in a surveillance video, WABC-TV reported. Joseph, from the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, is accused of setting the so-called mitzvah bus alight when it was parked June 26 in the Crown Heights neighborhood.He has not been charged with a hate crime, even though the bus was covered with Jewish symbols.Brooklyn artist Lev “Leviticus” Schieber uses his bus as a studio and gallery for his paintings in Crown Heights, as well as at festivals and parades. He wanted it to be fair and act according to Muslim teachings but he didn’t want to have to call a religious hotline and wait endlessly for an answer.Now he lined up behind a handful of people standing in front of a booth set up at one of the main Cairo subway stations — and 10 minutes later he got his answer.Fatwas are religious edicts or pronouncements, often on major issues related to Islamic teachings. But they also provide guidance on matters of everyday life, including starting up a grocery store or any other private business, whom to marry and whether it is permissible under Islam to accept banks’ interest rates.The booth in Cairo’s al-Shohada subway station was set up earlier this month by Egypt’s Al-Azhar, the Sunni Muslim world’s foremost religious institution, with the idea to offer Muslim worshipers a way to plug in fast to Islamic teachings — even while commuting to work. More booths are planned for later, at other subway stops.The idea, however, is also part of a broader push to correct misconceptions and misinterpretations of religious texts seen as fostering Islamic militancy in the country.The move came after militants killed at least 28 security personnel in two separate attacks in early July in the restive Sinai Peninsula and near some of Egypt’s most famous pyramids outside of Cairo. WASHINGTON — In a private, off-the-record conversation with congressional interns on Monday, Jared Kushner said he was not sure the Trump administration could offer anything “unique” to solve the Israeli Palestinian conflict and praised Israel’s handling of a recent crisis over the Temple Mount.The discussion was recorded by one of the interns present and subsequently leaked to Wired, which published Kushner’s entire answer to a question about the White House’s attempts to broker an Israeli-Palestinian peace accord, which US President Donald Trump has repeatedly referred to as the “ultimate deal.”“What do we offer that’s unique? I don’t know,” he said. “I’m sure everyone that’s tried this has been unique in some ways, but again we’re trying to follow very logically. We’re thinking about what the right end state is. And we’re trying to work with the parties very quietly to see if there’s a solution.”“And,” he went on, “there may be no solution, but it’s one of the problem sets that the president asked us to focus on. Jordan’s foreign minister on Tuesday criticized Israel for the record number of Jews who visited the Temple Mount on the fast day commemorating the destruction of the Jewish Temples that stood there.Some 1,300 Jewish visitors made a pilgrimage to the Temple Mount on Tuesday, days after Muslim worshipers resumed their own visits to the holy site after days of boycotts and protests against security measures that Arabs said broke the delicate status quo there.Speaking at an emergency Executive Committee meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Ayman Safadi noted the large number of Jewish visitors and said while the crisis over the Temple Mount had ended, more unrest could be in the offing.“The number of extremists who stormed Al-Aqsa today stands at a record number, greater than any other since the beginning of the Israeli occupation in 1967,” Safadi told the gathered foreign ministers from 57 countries in Istanbul, using the Muslim name for the compound which also houses the Dome of the Rock and the Al-Aqsa Mosque.However, “many more dangerous crises will erupt as a result of continued Israeli violations if Israel does not uproot the sources of the tension, if the occupation doesn’t end, if East Jerusalem is not independent and not the capital of the sovereign Palestinian State along the 1967 lines,” Safadi warned.Jordan, from whom Israel captured the Old City in 1967, sees itself as the custodian of Jerusalem’s holy sites and funds the Waqf Islamic Trust, which administers the Temple Mount.Tensions between Jerusalem and Amman have ramped up recently after an Israeli guard at the embassy in Amman killed two Jordanians, apparently after he was attacked by one of them. After Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was photographed hugging the guard upon his return home, Jordan’s King Abdullah said the incident would have diplomatic consequences.Over 1,300 Jews visited the Temple Mount Tuesday for the Tisha B’av fast commemorating the destruction of the Jewish temples that once stood at the site.The number was a large leap from the hundred or so Jews who normally visit the site, where they are not allowed to pray.Police spokeswoman Luba Samri said nine Jewish visitors were removed for violating the guidelines.
