HOARDING OF GOLD AND SILVER

JAMES 5:1-3
1 Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you.
2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten.
3 Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.

World’s largest warship docks in Israel’s Haifa port-Nimitz-class USS George H.W. Bush arrives for 4-day visit, with crew set to tour the country and Netanyahu expected to hop on board-By Times of Israel staff July 1, 2017, 12:30 pm

The USS George H.W. Bush, docked outside Israel’s Haifa port Saturday, the first such visit in 17 years. The Nimitz-class aircraft supercarrier left its homeport of Norfolk, Virginia on January 21 and has been in the region since February as a base for airstrikes against the Islamic State group. It operates mainly in the Persian Gulf.Commissioned in 2009, The 333m-long nuclear-powered ship can carry a crew of over 5,000 people, as well as around 90 fighter jets and helicopters. It is considered the world’s largest aircraft carrier and largest warship overall.Due to its size the ship is unable to enter the port itself, and dropped anchor four kilometers from the harbor.Channel 2 news said Israeli and American officials have not given details on the nature of the visit, though it noted that the Israeli and US navies cooperate closely and have held numerous joint military exercises.According to Channel 10, the crew of the George H.W. Bush will tour Israel in the coming days and celebrate American Independence Day in the Jewish state on July 4.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman will visit the ship on Monday, along with Haifa Mayor Yona Yahav. The ship will then depart on Wednesday to continue its operations.

Arab cleric claims Israel in league with Al-Jazeera-Preacher from United Arab Emirates, currently locked in a feud with Qatar, says media is the ‘weapon of the Jews’-By Times of Israel staff July 1, 2017, 11:31 am

A prominent cleric in the United Arab Emirates has claimed Israel is a supporter of Qatari television network Al-Jazeera, saying the station was a “weapon of the Jews.”“Control of the media is one of the weapons used for the destruction of the Islamic nation on the religious and national levels,” Wassim Yousuf said on Abu Dhabi TV in June.“This is why Shimon Peres went hand in hand with the Al-Jazeera network,” he added, in comments relayed by the Middle East Media Research Institute.Yousuf did not make clear how he believed Peres, the late prime minister and president, had cooperated with the Qatari channel.“Media was the first weapon of the Jews in their efforts to make the Muslims doubt their fait,” Yousuf said.He then went on to discuss alleged scheming by Jewish tribes in ancient Medina.“Look at the wickedness of the Jews,” he said. “They did not want a war because they were a minority in Medina. They did not want a war, and nor did they want an alliance with the Arab tribes.“So they wanted another weapon –- the media. They would pretend to believe in Islam at night and renounce it in the morning. This would lead the companions of the Prophet Muhammad to doubt him, and they would renounce Islam and abandon Muhammad. See how they relied on the media.”He went on to claim Jews rely on “falsification of facts” to reach their goal. “When they heard a news item, they would add a hundred lies to it, thus falsifying the facts.”This, he said, was also the Jewish strategy today.Qatar and its Al-Jazeera network have been under fire in the Arab world recently, with Saudi Arabia and its allies placing a crippling embargo on the emirate. With the support of the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Bahrain, the Saudis announced on June 5 they were suspending all ties with Qatar, accusing it of support for extremist groups — a claim Doha denies. They closed their airspace to Qatari carriers and blocked the emirate’s only land border, a vital route for its food imports. They also ordered all Qataris to leave and their own nationals to return home.Last week Riyadh laid down a list of 13 demands for Qatar, including ending Doha’s support for the Muslim Brotherhood, the closure of Al-Jazeera television, a downgrade of diplomatic ties with Iran and the shutdown of a Turkish military base in the emirate. The Arab world has often blamed Zionism and Judaism for various woes — from the Islamic State and financial crises to pornography, AIDS and even Sesame Street. Media-encouraged anti-Semitsm is thought to be rife in the Muslim world.AFP contributed to this report.

Labor aims for relevance with Tuesday’s leadership election-Can a new chairman can return the party to the glory days of Ben-Gurion and Rabin, or will it continue to languish in the opposition?-By Aron Heller July 1, 2017, 2:27 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel’s venerable Labor Party, which led the country to independence and steered it for decades through wars, crises and the pursuit of peace is now fighting to merely stay relevant. With Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud firmly in control, Labor is trying to overcome years of missteps and regain some of its former glory with the election of a new party leader next week. But even as it prepares for the vote, the question remains whether a new chairman can return the party of David Ben-Gurion, Golda Meir and Yitzhak Rabin to the prime minister’s office — or have it continue to languish in the opposition.“I think the party needs a new mission and the mission needs to be very clear: not joining Netanyahu but replacing Netanyahu,” Erel Margalit, a high-tech entrepreneur-turned-lawmaker who is among nine candidates vying for the party leadership, told The Associated Press.Though the next national election is scheduled for late 2019, polls show the party currently winning just 10 to 15 seats in the 120-seat parliament — making it Israel’s fourth or even fifth-largest party. Labor has not ruled since then-Prime Minister Ehud Barak was defeated in 2001, following a failed attempt to reach peace with the Palestinians. The past 16 years have been a downward spiral as the public has grown disillusioned with Labor’s moderate message of Middle East peace. The party has vacillated between meekly opposing a string of hawkish governments and serving as a junior partner to Netanyahu’s Likud in what critics saw as a feeble attempt to cling to power. The current nadir follows one of Labor’s greatest recent successes, when it garnered 24 seats in the 2015 election after its leader Isaac Herzog joined forces with the centrist former foreign minister Tzipi Livni to form The Zionist Union. But the merger still fell short of unseating Netanyahu, who has ruled since 2009. With Labor squabbling internally, the anti-Netanyahu votes in Israel have increasingly migrated toward the centrist Yesh Atid party and its telegenic leader Yair Lapid.“Labor is at one of the most dire points in its long history,” said Nadav Galon, an independent consultant and former adviser to several key members. “There is just this sense that the party is not a true alternative to the government anymore.”The next leader’s main task will be inspiring confidence among its members and the wider public.Herzog, who has been chairman since 2013, has seen his popularity tumble after a series of failed attempts to join Netanyahu’s coalition. The 56-year-old is trying to defy the party tradition of quickly dumping its leaders by calling for continuity and running for re-election on a promise to merge with even more centrist factions to create one big bloc that can finally topple Netanyahu.“It happened in Canada, it happened in France, it happened in Italy. When you want to replace the government, that is what you do,” he said at a recent campaign rally. “I’m the ninth chairman since 2000. Is that reasonable?”Polls indicate that his main challenger is Amir Peretz, a former chairman who left the party and recently returned.Peretz brandishes his credentials as a former defense minister who helped initiate the Iron Dome missile defense system, which shot down hundreds of rockets during the war in Gaza three years ago. His background as a former union leader could also draw voters from working-class towns that typically vote Likud and are turned off by Labor’s image as a bastion of liberal, upper-class Jews of European descent.“The peace camp has turned the concept of peace into an elitist product… I am going to turn peace into a product of the people,” Peretz told the AP. “Peace is the greatest social and economic missed opportunity that we’ve had.”But critics say that, like Herzog, Peretz represents more of the same and the party needs to choose a fresh face.Margalit, the former entrepreneur, and ex-telecom executive Avi Gabbay — both marketing themselves as outsiders — are locked in a battle to reach a second round of voting. The two top finishers in the July 4 primary are to face off in a runoff the following week, unless someone receives an outright majority in the first round.Margalit accuses Netanyahu of corruption and fear-mongering, and says he is the only party member who can offer a real alternative to the prime minister.“The other major task is to give hope where he gives fear,” he said. “While Netanyahu is scaring, I know how to be inclusive rather than exclusive.”Margalit has pinned his campaign on restoring Labor to its glorious roots under the banner “the leftists are coming back.”But recent surveys have shown that only about 10 percent of Israelis still identify themselves as being on the “left,” with the vast majority firmly in the political center. That’s where Gabbay is aiming, with his personal biography of humble beginnings and a rise to prominence in the business world.Gabbay earned a reputation for integrity when, as environment minister with the centrist Kulanu Party, he was the lone vote against a government decision to extract off-shore natural gas. He then resigned in protest last year and joined the Labor Party when Netanyahu ousted Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon in favor of nationalist Avigdor Lieberman.Another longshot candidate is Omer Bar-Lev, a former military commando leader and son of war hero Haim Bar-Lev.And waiting in the wings is Barak, who says he has no plans of returning to politics but would do so if called upon to save party and country. The ex-premier has emerged from time to time with stinging critiques of Netanyahu. Last week, he warned that the government’s current path — with its continued control of millions of Palestinians — could lead to an apartheid state. The next Labor chairman will automatically become the country’s opposition leader, a formal role that affords meetings with visiting foreign dignitaries and high-profile speaking opportunities. But that job is not guaranteed beyond the next election, which Netanyahu could move up according to his own political calculations.Tal Schneider, a leading Israeli political blogger and commentator, said that despite dire projections, it was too soon to write off Labor. But it still had a long way to go.“All the candidates are trying to create hope but I don’t think the voters feel it yet,” she said. “They mostly want the party to have honor and a political backbone. They want it to be a real opposition. So this is really a race for opposition leader, rather than for future prime minister.”

After UN hosts 2-day anti-Israel event, Israel’s envoy says it colludes with terror supporters-At ’50 years of occupation’ gathering, Nobel laureate Jody Williams urges attendees to make life hell for Israel until it withdraws;-By Cathryn J. Prince and Times of Israel staff July 1, 2017, 1:10 am

NEW YORK — Israel’s Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon accused the United Nations of “colluding with supporters of terror seeking to harm Israel,” following a two-day panel Thursday-Friday marking “50 years of occupation” in which groups Israel says have links to Palestinian terror organizations participated. The panel was addressed by Palestinian officials, an Israeli MK, Israeli and Palestinian activists and others.“It is beyond comprehension that UN funds are supporting organizations which aid terrorists and incite against Israel,” Danon said in a statement about the event, which was organized by the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People and held at UN headquarters in New York. The committee was tasked in 2016 with “bring[ing] together international experts, including from the State of Palestine and Israel, representatives of the diplomatic community, civil society, as well as academics and students to discuss the ongoing occupation.”Israel protested the meetings which began Thursday, saying that two of the groups participating, Al Haq and the Al Mezan Center for Human Rights, had links to Hamas and the PFLP.Israel’s UN delegation said in a statement that “according to intelligence information” the Al Haq group “collaborates with the PFLP” and the Al Mezan Center “works together regularly with the Hamas terrorist organization.”Jody Williams, the keynote speaker at the forum on Friday, urged attendees to make “life hell” for Israel until it withdraws from Palestinian territory.Nobel Peace Prize laureate Williams said “Israel has a right to a narrative” which “may or may not be valid,” but was dismayed by the criticism surrounding the event.“It is disturbing… that the state of Israel does not wish to allow the Palestinians to have their narrative heard,” she said, urging European nations and organizations such as Amnesty International to recognize Palestine as a state.Williams did not address Hamas rule of the Gaza Strip or payments via the Palestinian Authority government to convicted terrorists and their families; nor did other panelists. Israel has been vociferously protesting payments from the Palestinian Authority to terrorists in Israeli jails and to their families and those of Palestinians killed while carrying out terror attacks against Israelis. The head of Israel’s B’Tselem NGO, Hagai El-Ad, told the gathering on Friday that the Israeli government branded Palestinians who oppose the occupation as terrorists, Israelis who oppose the occupation as traitors, and the international community that opposes the occupation as anti-Semites. He lamented the failure to implement December 2016’s UN Resolution 2334 that branded settlements illegal.Joint (Arab) List Knesset member Aida Touma-Suleiman said the window for a two-state solution was closing fast, but that the alternative was not a democratic single-state. Rather, she said, there was already a one-state reality, but it was not a state that gave equal rights to the two peoples under its control. Israel was showing clear signs of apartheid, she said, adding that democracy and occupation were incompatible.Another panelist Friday, Noura Erakat, an assistant professor at George Mason University and a political activist, said the difference between the situation in the Gaza Strip and natural disasters such as the 2010 earthquake in Haiti is that the former is a human-made disaster.“The naval blockade of 10 years, and the land siege can all be reversed. The World Health Organization has said that by 2020 Gaza will not be livable, and so one has to question whether we have become so numb to these numbers that we can’t do anything about it,” Erakat said.organized by the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People-Israel and Egypt have maintained a blockade on the Gaza Strip since Hamas overthrew Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah party in a bloody coup in 2007. Israel says the blockade is necessary to prevent weaponry from reaching Hamas, which is avowedly committed to the destruction of Israel. Hamas and Israel have fought three wars since 2008.Tania Hary, executive director of the Israeli NGO Gisha – Legal Center for Freedom of Movement, said inertia is largely responsible for the situation in Gaza, adding that it was inextricably linked to the West Bank.“It is one of the biggest experimentation projects on the planet. How do you test the breaking point of two million people?” Hary said of Gazan residents. The World Jewish Congress set up a protest table across the street from the UN where the event was taking place, and said in a statement that the organizing committee was “the only UN body dedicated to an individual group of people, despite the many pressing human rights concerns facing peoples around the world. Established in November 1975 after the UN General Assembly passed its notorious ‘Zionism-equals-racism’ resolution, the Committee continues to encourage that poisonous notion.“While it claims to support the Middle East peace process and the achievement of a two-state solution, the Committee in fact regularly disparages Israel and administers events questioning its legitimacy,” the WJC said. The WJC called on the international community to support efforts to resume face-to-face Israeli-Palestinian negotiations, rather than encouraging unilateral Palestinian moves and rhetoric. It also called on the UN to dissolve what it said was the biased Committee and other bodies of its kind.During Thursday’s panel sessions, senior Palestinian negotiator and PLO official Saeb Erekat said that “Hamas and the PFLP are not terrorist organizations,” and that the Palestinians “do not have a partner in Israel today” since “the Israeli government, headed by Mr. Benjamin Netanyahu, is trying to replace the two-state solution with one state, two systems, apartheid.”Hamas and the PFLP are both internationally regarded as terror groups. Most recently Hamas and the PFLP claimed responsibility for a June 16 shooting and knife attack outside the Old City of Jerusalem in which Israeli Border Policewoman Hadas Malka was stabbed to death.Danon hit back at Erekat and the Palestinians for having “no shame,” decrying the “lies and incitement from those who are paying terrorists to kill innocent Israelis.”“These obsessive attempts to besmirch our good name will not change the fact that the Palestinian leadership refuses to end their support for terror,” said Danon, standing next to a photograph of Malka.Danon had protested to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday against the panel.Guterres indicated that the event did not have the blessing of his office.

Livni urges UNESCO not to pass Hebron decision-Former foreign minster speaks at UN body despite anti-Israel bias in bid to ward off new move to designate Tomb of the Patriarchs part of Palestine-By Times of Israel staff July 1, 2017, 5:33 pm

Former foreign minister Tizpi Livni criticized the UN’s cultural body for its repeated decisions against Israel and called on the organization to reject a further provocative vote on the flash point West Bank city of Hebron set for Sunday. The Palestinians are pushing to have Hebron — the site of the Tomb of the Patriarchs — declared as a “World Heritage Site in Danger” during the upcoming World Heritage Committee meeting.Speaking Friday at the UNESCO International Conference on the Empowerment of Women in Paris, Livni, a member of the opposition Zionist Union party, said she had seriously considered skipping the event due to previous “false” decisions against the Jewish state, Ynet reported.“I am an opposition leader in Israel, but I am not in opposition to the history of my people and not an opposition to the truth,” Livni said. “These decisions will not harm my people’s connection to [Jerusalem and Hebron], but they will hurt UNESCO and the ability to promote common interests.”UNESCO has come under fire by Israel, the US and other nations for a series of moves deemed anti-Israel, most recently in May when its executive board ratified a resolution denying any Jewish legal or historical Israeli links to Jerusalem and calling Israel an “occupying power” in its capital. That resolution also criticized the Israeli government for archaeological projects in the capital and in Hebron and lambasted its naval blockade of the Hamas-run Gaza Strip.“UNESCO must not be turned into a political arena,” Livni said during the UN body’s conference. “There are representatives from countries that have conflicts between them, but they must be left outside the building. Unfortunately, there are member states that exploit UNESCO for political purposes and to open conflicts.”In a video (Hebrew) posted on her Facebook page, Livni defended her decision to speak at the UNESCO event.“At first I thought I would not come because they have taken terrible decisions, but then I thought, if I am getting a hearing here at UNESCO, I am going to say what I have to, not only on the issue of women, but also what I think about the decisions that are on their table about Hebron next week,” Livni said.“They are going to hear what one woman from Israel thinks of these decisions. We can make a difference here.”In May’s resolution, the UN agency wrote that Hebron (and Bethlehem) was an “integral part of the Occupied Palestinian Territory,” and that it “deplores the ongoing Israeli excavations, works, construction of private roads for settlers and of a Wall inside the Old City of Al-Khalil/Hebron which are illegal under international law and harmfully affect the authenticity and integrity of the site.”The UN cultural agency’s World Heritage Committee is expected to vote on the matter on July 2, during its 41st session in Krakow, Poland. Given the Arab nations’ automatic majority in international forums, the Palestinian proposal is likely to be accepted. The Tomb of the Patriarchs would become the third cultural site on UNESCO’s “List of World Heritage in Danger” that is registered as located in the “State of Palestine.” The other two are the birthplace of Jesus in Bethlehem and the “cultural landscape of Southern Jerusalem,” around Battir.Following the May vote, Israel announced it would cut another $1 million from its payments to the UN, bringing the total cuts since December 2016 to $9 million. In December, after the Security Council passed Resolution 2334, slamming Israeli settlement activity and calling settlements illegal, Netanyahu ordered $6 million cut from Israel’s payment to the UN. And in March, after the Human Rights Council passed five anti-Israel resolutions, Netanyahu vowed to cut an additional $2 million.Last week, Israel denied a fact-finding mission entry to Hebron ahead of the UNESCO vote.A group of independent scholars from the International Council on Monuments and Sites had been trying to gain access to the disputed holy site since the Palestinian Authority announced in April its plan to have it added to UNESCO’s list of endangered world heritage sites. However, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu decided not to grant them the required permits.“On a strategic and principled level, the State of Israel will not take part in and will not legitimize any Palestinian political move under the guise of culture and heritage,” said Israel’s ambassador to UNESCO, Carmel Shama-Hacohen.Raphael Aharen contributed to this report.

Liberman: Israel ‘won’t ignore’ new Hezbollah weapon factories-Defense minister promises to ‘respond with strength’ to further spillover from battles in Syria hitting Israeli territory-By Times of Israel staff July 2, 2017, 6:56 pm

Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman issued a stern warning to the Lebanese terror group Hezbollah and its Iranian patrons over the development of rocket manufacturing installations inside Lebanon.“We are fully aware” of the rocket factories, Liberman told military correspondents in a briefing in Tel Aviv Sunday. “We know what needs to be done… We won’t ignore the establishment of Iranian weapons factories in Lebanon.”Still, he cautioned against overstating the threat. Since the Second Lebanon War in 2006, Israel has pulled significantly ahead of Hezbollah, he said. “There’s no need for either hysteria or euphoria on this issue.”Asked about the spike in spillover fire from Syrian battlefields hitting the Israeli side of the Golan Heights, Liberman said the Syrian army was trying to prevent further incidents.“There is intense fighting in recent days by rebel groups trying to regain control of Quneitra [on the Israeli-Syrian border], and a commensurate response from the Syrian army. We’re responding and will respond more forcefully” in the future, he said.He was referring to repeated Israeli attacks on Syrian army positions in response to errant shells and other spillover from the battles in the area in recent weeks.“The State of Israel has no interest in initiating a military move, not in the north and not in the south. There is quiet in the south, and in the north the spillover fire from Syria isn’t directed at us.”Israel would not set “red lines” when it came to responding to the spillover, which has seen 16 separate incidents of fire into Israeli territory in just over a week. “We have no red lines. We’ll weigh every incident separately,” but also “respond with strength” each time.“I don’t think that in either Syria or Lebanon, where they’re aware of the depth of our intelligence, they think that it’s a good idea to test our military capabilities.”Iran has reportedly begun constructing the new factories in Lebanon after Israeli airstrikes in Syria destroyed several shipments of rockets destined for southern Lebanese launching pads in recent years.Last month, at the Herzliya Conference, IDF intelligence chief Maj. Gen. Herzl Halevi said that “Iran has been working for the past year to set up indigenous infrastructures for producing precise munitions both in Lebanon and Yemen. We can’t ignore that, and we won’t.”Intelligence Minister Yisrael Katz echoed Liberman’s comments on Sunday. “Israel will not sit by and watch the continuing arming of Hezbollah with advanced weaponry, and will do anything it needs to to remove this threat,” he said while visiting the USS George H.W. Bush, a Nimitz-class US Navy aircraft carrier anchored in Haifa.

US pilots from vital Yom Kippur War mission reunite with Israeli ‘brothers in arms’-10 American airman who volunteered to deliver fighter jets to the IDF return to the country they helped defend 44 years ago-By Andrew Tobin July 1, 2017, 3:29 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

TEL AVIV (JTA) – The arrival of US fighter jets in Israel, as part of a month-long arms drop, was critical to turning the tide of the Yom Kippur War in favor of the Jewish state. But for the American pilots who volunteered to deliver the aircraft, it was just another mission. Alan Chesterman, part of a US Navy squadron that flew a handful of the jets, said he had little knowledge of Israel or its security situation when he landed here in October 1973.“We knew we were flying into a combat zone, but we didn’t know anything about it,” he said. “It was more like I’m young, adventurous and fearless – you might say young and stupid. I just lived to fly.”Chesterman, 72, was one of two pilots who this week reunited with some of the Israelis to whom they handed the Douglas A-4 Skyhawks. Along with nine other American pilots and their wives, they took a VIP tour of Israel to see what has become of the country since they helped to fend off the surprise onslaught by its Arab neighbors 44 years ago.The Americans landed at Ben-Gurion Airport Saturday on commercial flights, and have since been traveling around the country and receiving briefings from top military officials. They visited the Tel Nof airbase Wednesday, where they exchanged war stories with more than a dozen Israeli pilots who flew the American Skyhawks and recreated a photograph several of them, including retired US fighter pilot Roy “Bubba” Segars, 76, and former Israeli airman Jacob “Booby” Daube, had taken together during the war.On Thursday, the American pilots attended a flight course completion ceremony at the Hatzerim Air Force base, where they saw Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Reuven Rivlin speak.Rami Lothan, 65, an Israeli Air Force pilot who greeted the Americans in 1973 and flew one of the Skyhawks in the war, participated in a flight show at the event, flying a propeller-driven training plane. He helped organize and host the trip after meeting members of the group at flight shows in the United States.Lothan said that in the midst of the Yom Kippur War — in which a coalition of Arab armies led by Egypt and Syria caught Israel unprepared on the holiest day of the Jewish calendar – the Israeli pilots had not been able to appreciate the arrival of the Americans, who were fighting the Vietnam War at the time. This week’s visit, he said, has been an opportunity to reflect.“I don’t think we had enough time to sit down and appreciate what was happening. Whatever we could fly, whatever could carry bombs, we flew it,” he said. “But seeing these guys; it’s like lost brothers. I can admire pilots who don’t have any connection to the Middle East, and they just completed tours in Vietnam, and they all volunteered to come here and help us out.”Chesterman recalled that he was stationed at the naval airbase in southern California when the squadron skipper asked for volunteers for a dangerous and unspecified mission. Almost all the pilots raised their hands. Over the course of two days, they made their way to Israel, stopping several times along the way, including in Spain, the only European country that would have them en route to Israel.Segars, the other pilot from the mission now in Israel, fired some rounds toward Libya on the way.Although the Americans were only in Israel for a few hours, Chesterman gathered that the country was fully mobilized for war. He recalled seeing the wife and children of a soldier camped in a tent along the runway of the airbase, with their clothes drying on an air defense battery.“That when it hit me: I think they’re not just fighting for territory. They’re literally fighting for their lives,” Chesterman said. “The whole family was basically called up for active duty and was there for the duration. We don’t have to do it that way in the United States.”Chesterman said the Israelis welcomed the American pilots with a friendly meal on base, during which he and his fellow pilots “did our best to drink all their booze.” One of the Israeli pilots who had been drinking with them suddenly excused himself, saying he needed to return to the war. Only then did the Americans realize he had been drinking iced tea, not beer.Segars – the pilot who “fired at Muammar Gaddafi,” as Chesterman put it – earnestly tried to convince the Israelis to let him join the battle. But the several beers he had just downed “disabused him of opportunity to go fight in someone else’s war, Chesterman said.Until recently, Chesterman had been afraid to return to Israel because he thought it was unsafe. But this was his second trip to the county in the past two years, and he said he has learned to take comfort in the fact that “the good guys have all the guns.” He has also gained an appreciation for the role he played in helping Israel at a moment of profound crisis and what the country has become since.“I’m completely impressed by the way the Israelis conduct themselves,” he said. “They are proud of their country. It’s so young, with so many smart people and technology, but also has so much history. It’s an incredible places. If it weren’t for my kids and grandkids back in the states, Israel would be at the top of my list of places to live.”

Palestinian cleric calls on Allah to help us ‘slaughter Americans, Europeans’-In sermon at Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa, Sheikh Nidhal Siam also denounces Saudis, Qataris as ‘collaborators’ of Western powers-By Times of Israel staff July 1, 2017, 2:13 am

A Palestinian cleric preaching outside Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque this month called on Allah to facilitate the “slaughter” of Americans, Europeans and various Arab leaders.Sheikh Nidhal Siam, known as Abu Ibrahim, castigated the regimes of Saudi Arabia and Qatar, calling both “collaborators” with the Americans and the English. He called on Allah to “enable us to slaughter… the Americans… the Europeans,” and the “criminal and treacherous” Arab rulers he had mentioned.A video of his sermon was posted on YouTube on June 18 and subsequently reposted and translated by the watchdog group Middle East Media Research Institute.“Do not think that some of the collaborators are right and some are wrong. They are all equally collaborators. Just as the Saudi regime is a lackey of the Americans, and is immersed in collaboration with them, the Qatari regime is a lackey of the English, and is immersed in collaboration with them,” Siam said. “All these [regimes] are like riding beasts ridden by the superpowers.“Oh Allah, enable us to slaughter the Americans!” he continued, as his listeners said “Amen!”Siam then said “And the Europeans!” and later: “And our criminal and treacherous [Arab] rulers!”After each proclamation the listeners chanted another amen. The cleric concluded: “Oh Allah, bring about their downfall soon! Oh Allah, do not leave a single one of them on the face of the earth!”His listeners again intoned an amen.

Trump tweets video of himself slamming and punching ‘CNN’-Dylan Stableford-Senior Editor-Yahoo News-July 2, 2017

President Trump shared a video Sunday on Twitter of himself slamming WWE President Vince McMahon to the ground and punching him, with the CNN logo superimposed over McMahon’s head, escalating his recent attacks aimed at the news media. The footage, taken from “WrestleMania 23” in 2007, shows Trump approaching McMahon outside of the ring, using a clothesline move to knock him down and punching him in the head before turning to walk away. The altered clip mocking CNN recently appeared on a Reddit.com message board. The president’s tweet included a pair of disparaging hashtags: “#FraudNewsCNN” and “#FNN.” The video was also shared by the official @POTUS account.#FraudNewsCNN #FNN pic.twitter.com/WYUnHjjUjg— Donald J. The White House defended Trump’s attack, saying it was an acceptable response to the “Morning Joe” pair’s criticism of the president.“When he gets attacked, he’s going to hit back,” Sanders told reporters. “I think the American people elected somebody who’s tough, who’s smart, and who’s a fighter. And that’s Donald Trump. And I don’t think that it’s a surprise to anybody that he fights fire with fire.”Sanders also dismissed the notion that Trump encourages violent behavior.“The president in no way, form or fashion has ever promoted or encouraged violence,” Sanders said.Aides told the Washington Post they were worried that Trump’s feud with “Morning Joe” was distracting from his feud with CNN, which they thought was more winnable.Late last month, CNN retracted a story that suggested a questionable link between an ally of Trump and a Russian investment fund. The network announced the resignations of the reporters who wrote it and issued an apology. At a Republican fundraiser at the Trump Hotel in Washington, D.C., last week, the president told donors it would be “fun” to sue CNN.“These are really dishonest people. Should I sue them? I mean, they’re phonies,” Trump said, according to audio of the closed-door event published by the Intercept.“It’s a shame what they’ve done to the name CNN, that I can tell you,” Trump added. “But as far as I’m concerned, I love it. U.S. warship in operation near disputed island in South China Sea-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-July 2, 2017

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. warship sailed near a disputed island in the South China Sea claimed by China, Taiwan and Vietnam on Sunday in an operation meant to challenge the competing claims of all three nations, a U.S. Defense Department official said. The U.S.S. Stethem, a guided-missile destroyer, sailed within 12 nautical miles of Triton Island, part of the Paracel Islands in the South China Sea, the official said. The operation was first reported by Fox News on Sunday. It was the second "freedom-of-navigation operation," or "fonop," conducted during the presidency of Donald Trump, following a drill in late May in which a U.S. warship sailed within 12 nautical miles of an artificial island built up by China in the South China Sea.Twelve nautical miles marks the territorial limits recognized internationally. Sailing within those 12 miles is meant to show that the United States does not recognize territorial claims there."Unlike in the Spratlys, where China has created new artificial territory in the last several years, it has effectively controlled the Paracels since 1974," said Mira Rapp-Hooper, a South China Sea expert at the Center for a New American Security. "It claims illegal straight baselines around the Paracels, and the fonop may have been contesting these."Trump has heaped praise on Chinese President Xi Jinping, but his administration has also stepped up pressure on Beijing as he has become frustrated that China has not done more to pressure North Korea over its nuclear and missile programs. On Thursday, the administration imposed sanctions on two Chinese citizens and a shipping company for helping North Korea's nuclear and missile programs, and accused a Chinese bank of laundering money for Pyongyang. The Trump administration has also approved an arms package for Taiwan worth about $1.4 billion, the State Department said last week. China deems Taiwan its own and has never renounced the use of force to bring the self-ruled island under its control.Trump is due to speak with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Sunday, ahead of meetings that he will hold with both leaders on the sidelines of the Group of 20 summit in Hamburg, Germany, next Friday and Saturday.(Reporting by Yeganeh Torbati and David Brunnstrom; Editing by Leslie Adler)

EU ready to help Italy in NGO dispute By Nikolaj Nielsen-EUOBSERVER

BRUSSELS, 30. Jun, 14:52-The European Commission said it is willing to help draft disembarkation guidance rules following threats from Italy to prevent NGOs offloading rescued migrants at its ports.Speaking to reporters in Brussels on Thursday (29 June), EU commission spokesperson Natasha Bertaud said that it understood Italy's concerns and "supports their call for a change in the situation."But Bertaud added that any change in policy has to be discussed first with other member states and communicated to the NGOs.A gathering of member state interior and justice ministers is scheduled for next week on Thursday and Friday in Estonia, where the issue is a priority."From our side, the commission is ready to help inform the discussions at the justice and home affairs [meetings] and to draft guidance on disembarkation, if that is needed," she said.Italy's interior minister, Marco Minniti, who had skipped the last two ministerial meetings, is set to make an appeal among his counterparts for more solidarity. On Thursday, Rome had threatened to impose the blockade on non-Italian NGOs following an upsurge in migrant and asylum hopeful arrivals from the north African coast since the beginning of the year. Thousands were rescued this week alone. The Italian government wants other EU member states, such as Malta, France, or Spain, to open up their ports as a sign of solidarity.-Politics and law-But the measure is also part of a broader political wrangle at the EU level, after failed attempts to agree on key EU asylum laws and rules under the leadership of the outgoing Maltese Council of the EU presidency."The Italians are trying to offload the burden on unblocking the stalemate at EU level," said Giulia Lagana, a senior analyst at the Open Society European Policy Institute in Brussels.Italian internal politics is also likely at play given the possible upcoming general elections.Italy's prime minister, Paolo Gentiloni, is leading a centre-left government that is facing an increasingly acrimonious debate on migration from a broad right-wing opposition.Local elections earlier this week saw the thrashing of the ruling Democratic Party (PD) by the centre-right coalition, which includes the populist Five Star Movement and the virulent anti-EU Lega Nord party.Former PM Matteo Renzi, who leads the PD and is hoping to take back his seat as prime minister, had downplayed the results. But Renzi is facing opposition from within his own ranks, with calls for him to resign. He now also appears to be stepping up the rhetoric against migrants. However, any Italian plan to force NGOs to take rescued migrants elsewhere would likely violate international law.The law requires a boat to take those rescued to the nearest safe port, now concentrated around Calabria and Sicily. The host country must also be able to guarantee human rights, meaning they can't be offloaded in places such as Egypt or Tunisia. The only other option would be Malta, given that Spain and France are too far away.Earlier this month, Italy's interior under-secretary, Domenico Manzione, told MEPs that the Mediterranean has become the largest grave yard in Europe. In this year alone, over 2,000 people have died so far in efforts to cross the Central Mediterranean.

Pope shakes up Vatican by replacing conservative doctrinal chief-[Reuters]-By Philip Pullella-YAHOONEWS-July 1, 2017

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - In a major shake up of the Vatican's administration on Saturday, Pope Francis replaced Catholicism's top theologian, a conservative German cardinal who has been at odds with the pontiff's vision of a more inclusive Church.A brief Vatican statement said Cardinal Gerhard Ludwig Mueller's five-year mandate as head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, a key department charged with defending Catholic doctrine, would not be renewed.Mueller, 69, who was appointed by former Pope Benedict in 2012, will be succeeded by the department's number two, Archbishop Luis Francisco Ladaria Ferrer.Ladaria, a 73-year-old Spaniard who, like the Argentine pope is a member of the Jesuit order, is said by those who know him to be a soft-spoken person who shuns the limelight. Mueller, by contrast, often appears in the media."They speak the same language and Ladaria is someone who is meek. He does not agitate the pope and does not threaten him," said a priest who works in the Vatican and knows both Mueller and Ladaria, asking not to be named.Since his election in 2013, Francis has given hope to progressives who want him to forge ahead with his vision for a more welcoming Church that concentrates on mercy rather than the strict enforcement of rigid rules they see as antiquated.Mueller is one of several cardinals in the Vatican who have publicly sparred with the pope.In 2015 he was among 13 cardinals who signed a secret letter to the pope complaining that a meeting of bishops discussing family issues was stacked in favor of liberals. The letter was leaked, embarrassing the signatories."Clearly, the pope and Cardinal Mueller have not been on the same page for five years," the priest said.Mueller has criticized parts of a 2016 papal treatise called "Amoris Laetitia" (The Joy of Love), a cornerstone document of Francis' attempt to make the 1.2 billion-member Church more inclusive and less condemning. In it, Francis called for a Church that is less strict and more compassionate towards any "imperfect" members, such as those who divorced and remarried, saying "no one can be condemned forever".Conservatives have concentrated their criticism on the document's opening to Catholics who divorce and remarry in civil ceremonies, without getting Church annulments.Under Church law they cannot receive communion unless they abstain from sex with their new partner, because their first marriage is still valid in the eyes of the Church and therefore they are seen to be living in an adulterous state of sin.In the document the pope sided with progressives who had proposed an "internal forum" in which a priest or bishop decide jointly with the individual on a case-by-case basis if he or she can be fully re-integrated and receive communion. After the document was published Catholic bishops in some countries, including Germany, enacted guidelines on how priests could allow some divorced and remarried Catholics to receive the sacraments. But Mueller has said there should be no exceptions, making him a hero to conservatives who have made the issue a rallying point for their opposition to Francis.(Reporting by Philip Pullella; Editing by Helen Popper)

Snipers, bombs, mortars - Philippine troops battle against Islamists-[Reuters]-By Kanupriya Kapoor-YAHOONEWS-July 1, 2017

MARAWI CITY, Philippines (Reuters) - Sprawled on the boarded-up balcony of a two-storey house, the barrel of his rifle poked into a hole cut in the wood, the Philippine army sniper calls for quiet before taking his shot."Firing," he says evenly, before the .50 caliber shot rings out, sending tremors through the house. He was firing at a home less than a kilometer (a half mile) away, believed to be a stronghold of Islamist militants who have been holed up in Marawi City for over five weeks.A spotter sat next to him, with his scope set into another hole. The two spoke quietly to each other as the sniper took three more shots across the Agus river into the militant-held commercial district of Marawi, now a battleground strewn with debris from ruined buildings. Scores of bodies are rotting in the area, and the stench mixes with the smell of gunpowder.Thousands of soldiers are battling to retake the southern Philippine city, where militants loyal to Islamic State launched a lightning strike on May 23.The southern Philippines has been marred for decades by insurgency and banditry. But the intensity of the battle in Marawi and the presence of foreign fighters from Indonesia, Malaysia, Yemen and Chechnya fighting alongside local militants has raised concerns that the region may be becoming a Southeast Asian hub for Islamic State as it loses ground in Iraq and Syria. As troops poured in to contain the siege, few were expecting a slow, difficult and unfamiliar urban war."We are used to insurgencies... but a deployment of this magnitude, this kind of conflict is a challenge for our troops," said Lt Col Christopher Tampus, one of the officers commanding ground operations in Marawi. He said progress in clearing the city has been hindered by militant fire and booby traps like gas tanks rigged with grenades.-REDUCED TO RUBBLE-After weeks of military airstrikes and shelling, Marawi, a lakeside city of around 200,000 is now a ghost town, the center of which has been reduced to charred rubble and hollow structures. Buildings in the military-controlled areas of the city are still standing but deserted after residents fled.Authorities estimate around 100 to 120 fighters, some of them as young as 16 years, remain holed up in the commercial district of the city, down from around 500 at the beginning of the siege. The fighters are holding around 100 hostages, according to the military, who have been forced to act as human shields, take up arms or become sex slaves.Military aircraft drop bombs on the militant zone almost every day. From the outskirts of the city, mortar teams take aim at what they call "ground zero", the heart of the conflict."Mortars are designed to target people and smaller areas than the airstrikes." said mortar specialist Sgt. Jeffery Baybayan, as he jotted down coordinates that come crackling over a radio from an observer closer to the conflict area."Hitting targets accurately can be difficult and we're expending rounds without hitting targets. We are concerned about our own troops that are very close to the enemy area," he added, as the mortars exploded in the city, sending up plumes of thick black smoke.-"SURRENDER NOW OR DIE"-During the day's battle, Tampus received reports that three civilians, trapped for weeks near the fighting, were trying to escape. Several soldiers responded to help rescue them - moving to the area in two lines along the sides of streets to avoid sniper fire.Three civilians - two men and a woman using a walking stick - came out and sat by the side of the street once they were in the military zone."The bombs were so frequent coming from both sides," said Jose Locanas, a 53-year-old Christian man trapped with his wife and friend in his house. "We were caught in the middle."Troops said they received word from their relatives that the three were trapped and managed to escort them out.More than 400 people, including over 300 militants, 82 security forces and 44 civilians are known to have died in Marawi. Some of the bodies of civilians were found decapitated and the military has warned the number of residents killed by rebel "atrocities" could rise sharply as troops retake more ground.Every day, troops make announcements through loudspeakers for the militants to "surrender now or die". To the trapped civilians, they offer help to get out of the conflict area.Authorities say they believe the militants are running out of supplies and ammunition, but they say there is no deadline to retake the city.Tampus, the officer, said when troops reinforcements come into Marawi, they are initially apprehensive because of the high death toll."But once they are here, the discipline kicks in and they are focused," he said.(Editing by Raju Gopalakrishnan)

THE FRAUD EX PRESIDENT ISLAMIC-QURANIC SUNNI-ARAB-MUSLIM OBAMA IS BACK ON THE MOUTH PIECE CIRCUIT.

Obama pushes tolerance, respect in childhood home Jakarta-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-July 1, 2017

JAKARTA, Indonesia — Following another week of dust-ups between the media and President Donald Trump, his predecessor shared a bit of wisdom Saturday from the other side of the world about tolerance and taking the daily news cycle in stride."I wasn't worried about what was in the newspapers today," former President Barack Obama said during a nostalgic visit to Indonesia's capital, his childhood home. "What I was worried about was, 'What are they going to write about me 20 years from now when I look back?'"Obama was greeted by a crowd of thousands, including leaders, students and businesspeople, in Jakarta, where he opened the Fourth Congress of Indonesian Diaspora. He is wildly popular in Indonesia, where many view him as an adopted son. A statue of the boy still remembered as "Barry" stands outside his old elementary school. He reminisced about moving to Jakarta in 1967 when he was just 6 years old, shouting, "Indonesia bagian dari diri!" — or "Indonesia is part of me!" He said he had been gorging on the local food since arriving."If the rainy season came, the floods were coming and we had to clean out the floors in our house and then chase the chickens because they had gone someplace else," he said to roaring laughter. "Today, Jakarta is a thriving centre of commerce marked by highways and high-rises. So much has changed, so much progress has been made."Obama lived in the country with his mother, an anthropologist, and his Indonesian stepfather. The couple split up after having his half-sister, and Obama moved back to Hawaii when he was 10 to live with his grandparents. But he said he has never forgotten the years he spent in Indonesia."My time here made me cherish respect for people's differences," he said, noting how he and his family had just visited two of the most treasured ancient temples — Borobudur, a Buddhist complex, and the Hindu compound of Prambanan — in the world's most populous Muslim country. The speech came on the final leg of Obama's 10-day vacation in Indonesia. In addition to visiting the temples in the city of Yogyakarta on the island of Java, he and his wife, Michelle, and daughters, Sasha and Malia, also went rafting and toured the resort island of Bali. On Friday, he met Indonesian President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo at the grand Bogor Palace in West Java, just outside Jakarta.Obama largely stayed away from U.S. politics and the Trump administration, but he did tout one of his accomplishments while in office."In Paris, we came together around the most ambitious agreement in history about climate change, an agreement that even with the temporary absence of American leadership, can still give our children a fighting chance" he said.Trump shocked many countries last month by announcing he was pulling out of the accord. He has also had a difficult relationship with members of the press and was recently condemned by Democrats and Republicans for a tweet that attacked a female MSNBC host.Obama stressed the importance of stepping away from news sites where only like-minded views are shared, and warned about social media giving rise to resentment of minorities and bad treatment of people. The Indonesian visit marked Obama's first trip to Asia since leaving office. He urged the country to be a light of democracy and to never stop embracing differences. It has faced a rise in Islamic radicalism, anti-gay attacks and was recently condemned by rights groups for jailing Jakarta's former governor, an ethnic Chinese Christian, for blasphemy."The spirit of this country has to be one of tolerance. It's enshrined in Indonesia's constitution, it's symbolized by mosques and temples and churches beside each other," Obama said. "That spirit is one of the defining things about Indonesia. It is one of the most important characteristics to set as an example for other Muslim countries around the world."Margie Mason, The Associated Press.

Three car bombs target Damascus, 20 killed-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-July 2, 2017

BEIRUT/DAMASCUS (Reuters) - A car bomb killed 20 people in Damascus on Sunday and wounded dozens more, the Syrian foreign ministry said, the first such bombing in the Syrian capital since a series of jihadist suicide attacks in March. The authorities said it was one of three car bombs that were meant to be blown up in crowded areas of the capital on Sunday, the first day back to work from the Eid al-Fitr holiday. Security forces pursued and destroyed the other two.Officials said the bombers had been prevented from reaching their intended targets, otherwise the casualty toll would have been higher. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack. Damascus was hit by two separate, multiple suicide bomb attacks in March, one of them claimed by Islamic State and the other by the Islamist insurgent alliance Tahrir al-Sham.In a letter to the U.N. secretary general and the head of the security council, the foreign ministry said the blast that killed 20 people in the Bab Touma area near the Old City had also wounded dozens of women and children.State media said the bomber had been spotted and pursued by the security forces and set off the bomb after he had been encircled in the area.Damascus has enjoyed relative security in recent years even as the six-year-long civil war has raged on in nearby areas.Footage broadcast by state TV from the blast that caused the fatalities near the Old City showed roads scattered with debris, several badly damaged cars, and another one that had been turned into a pile of twisted metal.Footage from another of the blast sites showed what appeared to be the remains of a person and badly damaged vehicles outside a mosque in the Baytara traffic circle near the Old City.On March 15, two suicide bomb attacks in Damascus killed several dozen people, most of them at the Palace of Justice courthouse near the Old City. Islamic State claimed responsibility for that attack. On March 11, a double suicide attack in the capital killed scores of people, most of them Iraqi Shi'ite pilgrims. That attack was claimed by the Tahrir al-Sham alliance of Islamist insurgents, which is spearheaded by a jihadist group formerly known as the Nusra Front.Syrian government forces, which have defeated rebel fighters in several suburbs of Damascus over the last year, are currently battling insurgents in the Jobar and Ain Tarma areas on the capital's eastern outskirts.A rebel group accused the army of using chlorine gas in the fighting on Saturday. The army denied the claim as fabrications.(Reporting by Tom Perry in Beirut and Firas Makdesi and Kinda Makieh in Damascus; Writing by Tom Perry; Editing by Mark Potter and David Evans)

Syrian President Bashar Assad will be face of new bank note-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-July 2, 2017

BEIRUT — A new 2,000 Syrian Lira ($3.9) bank note with the face of President Bashar Assad will go into circulation Sunday, the Syrian Central Bank announced. The notes are the first time Syria will depict President Bashar Assad on its currency since he took office 17 years ago.Assad's face appears on the new banknotes at a time when his government is boasting military successes against the armed rebellion across the country. The currency previously only carried images of historic icons or pictures of his father, Hafez Assad.Central Bank Governor Duraid Durgham said the new bank notes will go into circulation starting Sunday "due to the wear and tear" affecting currency currently in circulation.Syria's currency has crashed as the country's seven-year-long war rages on. Trading at 47 liras to the dollar in 2011, it's currently going for 517 liras to the dollar.Inflation has also soared, reaching an all-time high in 2013, at over 120 per cent . Estimates in 2016 put the inflation rate at 50 per cent .Sarah El Deeb, The Associated Press.

Iraqis prepare to celebrate Mosul victory blocks away from raging battles-[Reuters]-By Khaled al-Ramahi and Stephen Kalin-YAHOONEWS-July 2, 2017

MOSUL/ERBIL, Iraq (Reuters) - Iraqis prepared on Sunday to celebrate an expected victory over Islamic State in Mosul, just blocks away from battles raging in the last few districts where the militants are dug in.Troops tied white banners and Iraqi flags to lamp posts and damaged buildings including the Hadba minaret, which the jihadists blew up in June along with the adjoining Grand al-Nuri Mosque, as air strikes and mortars rained down nearby. It was from al-Nuri's pulpit that Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi declared his caliphate three years ago.Authorities are planning a week of nationwide celebrations, according to a government statement, and Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi is expected to visit Mosul to formally declare victory.Mosul's fall would mark the effective end of the Iraqi half of the caliphate which Islamic State declared three years ago in parts of Iraq and Syria. The group still controls territory west and south of Mosul, where tens of thousands of civilians live.Soldiers from the elite Counter-Terrorism Service (CTS) retook the Makawi district of Mosul's Old City on Sunday, a military statement said, a few blocks from the western banks of the Tigris. Reaching the river will give Iraqi forces control over the entire city and is expected by the end of this week.A U.S.-led international coalition is providing air and ground support to the offensive, which Iraq's army and militarized police are also fighting in a multi-pronged attack.Federal police chief Lieutenant General Raed Shakir Jawdat said his forces had completed their mission in southern parts of the Old City on Saturday and those areas still needed to be cleared of explosives and corpses from two weeks of fighting."Unfortunately until now there are families besieged and there are many discarded enemy corpses, and unfortunately many civilians have been martyred, so we must remove them," he told Reuters in western Mosul."The areas must be cleared of bombs. We must make the areas safe so that civilians can return."Nearly nine months of grinding urban warfare have displaced 900,000 people, about half the city's pre-war population, and killed thousands, according to aid organizations.Thousands of residents are believed to be trapped in the Old City with little food, water, medicine and no access to health services, according to those who managed to flee. After CTS units captured the al-Nuri mosque complex on Thursday, Abadi declared the end of Islamic State's caliphate, which he called "a state of falsehood".Baghdadi has left the fighting in Mosul to local commanders and is believed to be hiding on the Iraq-Syrian border, according to U.S. and Iraqi military sources. The group has moved its remaining command and control structures to Mayadin, in eastern Syria, U.S. intelligence sources said last month, without indicating if Baghdadi was also hiding in the same area.Baghdadi has often been reported killed or wounded. Russia said on June 17 its forces might have killed him in an air strike in Syria. But Washington says it has no information to corroborate such reports and Iraqi officials are also skeptical.(Additional reporting by Maher Chmaytelli; Editing by Louise Ireland)

Officials go through final preparations for Canada Day event in Ottawa-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-June 30, 2017

OTTAWA — Jessica Mellor was doing her best Friday to catch her son, Lincoln, running — as toddlers often do — towards a security gate around the main Canada Day stage on Parliament Hill.It was a tranquil moment as the family braced for the hoopla of Saturday, when half a million people are expected to gather in the shadow of the Centre Block to mark Canada's 150th anniversary — an unprecedented crowd, with logistical planning and security to match."We've been meaning to come up for Canada Day our whole lives, basically, and never really got around to it," said Lincoln's father, Kyle, whose son is named for Lincoln Alexander, Canada's first black member of Parliament and former Ontario lieutenant-governor."This year, 150, it's a bit of a pilgrimage to come up and just pay homage to everything that the nation has done for us."Officials have been working for months to prepare for this weekend's events, which the government has billed as the largest in the nation's history, between the hundreds of thousands who are expected to be in downtown Ottawa to the countless others massing in more than 2,000 communities across the country. On Friday, workers were putting the finishing touches on the towering main stage, where last-minute rehearsals were underway. Temporary fencing, barricades and bollards created security bottlenecks where visitors normally enjoy unfettered access to the grounds. Much of downtown Ottawa was closed to vehicles. At one point, officers were seen peering into and under the decorative planters lining the street; a security official was heard chiding staff for letting a group walk past without being checked — a group that turned out to be Environment Minister Catherine McKenna her staff."The hoops you have to go through, it's like a cattle shed here," Ottawa resident George Neville said of security."It seems extreme for a country like Canada."Kyle Mellor, meanwhile, described it as a comfort, one he was willing to put up with."It's always in the back of your mind, terrible things (that could happen), but you don't want that to stop you from doing your thing, then they win. It's reassuring to see the level of security that's down here."Tourists dressed in red or showcasing swag adorned with the Maple Leaf snapped pictures and laughed as heavily armed police manned security checkpoints nearby.Saturday's itinerary includes appearances by the Prince of Wales, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and U2 band members Bono and The Edge. And while Heritage Minister Melanie Joly called the preparations hectic, she said officials are more than ready."We want people to be able to celebrate and have fun and we want to showcase the best of Canada," she said. "That's exactly what we've been working for two years and now this is our big moment."The weather, however, may have other ideas.Environment Canada's forecast for Saturday includes rain in the morning and the risk of thunderstorms later in the day and into the evening, which could put a damper on plans for what has been billed as a spectacular 20-minute fireworks extravaganza.Only lightning or severe rain would push pause on the Parliament Hill show, Joly said; officials will adapt Saturday's festivities according to the weather. Not far from the main stage Friday, visitors to Parliament Hill gathered around a teepee set up by a group of indigenous activists to highlight some of the darker chapters in the country's history. The Bawaating Water Protectors from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., arrived Wednesday night, but were stopped by police. Nine people were arrested but later released, and the structure was moved closer to the main stage — an exercise  "reoccupation" to draw attention to the history of indigenous people. The Bawaating Water Protectors are just one of many indigenous groups planning demonstrations this weekend to draw attention to the fact that, for them, there is nothing to celebrate.Trudeau visited with the demonstrators Friday, later tweeting about the meeting to say the government would be a partner in the ongoing process to break free from colonial structures and give Indigenous Peoples a space to be heard in Ottawa.U.S. President Trump issued a statement Friday wishing Canada his best on its 150th birthday."The United States cherishes our relationship with Canada. Throughout the years, no two countries have formed a bond as unique as ours," the statement said."Canada and the United States have stood together steadfastly in times of peace and war, through prosperity and hardship. We are united by the world’s longest border, but —above all—by the shared values we together hold so highly."Jordan Press and Terry Pedwell, The Canadian Press.

Soggy grounds and sticky heat don't stop revellers at Canada 150 bash-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-July 2, 2017

OTTAWA — Paper Maple Leaf flags soaked by an early morning downpour quickly turned into makeshift fans to ward off sticky afternoon warmth Saturday as thousands of people squelched and squished their way around Parliament Hill to celebrate Canada's 150th birthday. The crowds for this year's Canada Day celebration may have been the biggest ever, and due to the especially tight security thousands of people had to wait in lines — often for hours — as they funnelled through security checkpoints to get to the party on the Hill.It prompted plenty of grumbling as would be revellers took to social media to vent their frustrations."I used to think standing quietly in orderly lines was what made this country great. I don’t know what to believe in anymore," tweeted  Benjamin. Woo.Kim D. complained in a tweet that "Disorganized security lines caused 8 hr+ backlog," while some others said the ridiculously long wait had caused them to miss the show they'd come to see.About 25,000 people — a waterlogged rainbow coalition of rain slickers, ponchos and umbrellas — were on hand as the midday show wrapped up, but the downtown core teemed with celebrants throughout the day as the sun came out and crowds amassed anew in anticipation of the evening show.Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who was to return to host the second instalment, was on hand earlier Saturday alongside his family, as well as Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall, for a series of performances that began with Buffy Sainte-Marie's rousing version of "Carry On."A single CF-18 streaked over the Centre Block, drowning out the final notes of O Canada, before the prime minister delivered a rousing, forceful and enthusiastic celebration of the unique power and resilience of the Canadian character."We don't aspire to be a melting pot," Trudeau told the cheering crowd."We know true strength and resilience flows through Canadian diversity. Ours is a land of original peoples and of newcomers, and our greatest pride is that you can come here from anywhere in the world, build a good life and be part of our community."The week's celebrations have been tinged with the resentment and frustration of indigenous people chafing over the country's oppressive, colonial past — a sentiment symbolized by the teepee erected not far from the stage, and expressed overtly by protesters in Montreal. There, a small group marched through the city's Old Port to denounce what they called colonialist and racist policies, throwing coloured leaflets and chanting slogans as they made their way through a crowded tourist area, monitored by dozens of uniformed police officers."Our past is far from perfect," Trudeau acknowledged in Ottawa. "For centuries, Indigenous Peoples have been victims of oppression, from the time when the first explorers celebrated their discovery of the new world."He urged the crowd to acknowledge the country's history and to confront its reality."We must educate ourselves and dedicate our efforts to progress," he said. "It is a choice we make not because of what we did, or who we were, but because of who we are."The speech also included one monumental gaffe: as he recited the names of the provinces and territories, he seemed to overlook Alberta. Twitter and host Sandra Oh were among those who quickly called him out on the mistake.Realizing the error, Trudeau jumped on the front of the stage, called out, "I love you, Alberta," and blew a kiss, before sitting down and shaking his head. He apologized again later, citing the excitement of the occasion.U2 frontman Bono and guitarist the Edge took the stage after Trudeau, acknowledging the country's reputation for tolerance and consensus-building."This is your home, and we are grateful guests in it," said Bono, whose brief remarks alluded to the protectionist and confrontational policies of U.S. President Donald Trump."When others build walls, you open doors," he said before a stripped-down version of U2's 1991 hit, "One.""Where you lead, others follow, and that's the real reason the Edge and I are here today."Canada's decision to open its doors to her family is why Lorana Rios, 41, decided to come to Ottawa to celebrate Saturday. She arrived here from Mexico more than a decade ago, and the opportunities she's had make her grateful, she said."I want to celebrate living in Canada — it is a safe country," she said. The teepee on Parliament Hill had been a source of some tension earlier in the week, and while activists chanted and waved signs during Trudeau's speech, their encounters with the crowd at large were calm.At evening Canada Day festivities indigenous protesters booed Trudeau and wife Sophie Gregoire Trudeau as they appeared again on stage. But as the protesters chanted "shame, shame," they were drowned out by even louder cheers from the boisterous crowd.Regina resident Rhoderic Sia, 40, a red, flag-bedecked colander on his head, acknowledged their cause, as did several of the day's main speakers."Everybody has their own opinion," said Sia, who hails originally from the Philippines."I respect it, but we still have to respect what Canada is now. Coming from another country, being here is all about your freedom. You can have everything if you work hard."Sia had been planning his trip to Ottawa for two years, but was beaten to the celebratory punch Saturday by celebrations in Newfoundland and Labrador, where a boatload of 75 early risers set out on the North Atlantic to be among the first to welcome Canada Day.Kellie Loder of St. John's sang O Canada as the vessel pulled in front of Cape Spear. There was a moment of silence afterward to remember those who have fought and died in battle over the last 150 years.Prince Charles expressed his gratitude for Canada setting an example. "We should be clear and proud that we are celebrating a country that others look to as an example — an example of fairness and inclusion, of always striving to be better," he said. "Around the world, Canada is recognized as a champion of human rights, as a peacekeeper, as a responsible steward of the environment and natural resources, and as a consistent example of diversity and the power of inclusion."Even Donald Trump himself got into the spirit of the occasion, tweeting his congratulations on the occasion of Canada's birthday and acknowledging the prime minister by name, whom he described as his "newfound friend."Others marked the day by becoming newfound Canadians at dozens of citizenship ceremonies across the country, including one in Halifax where 53 people from more than 20 different countries celebrated Canada's 150th birthday by taking the oath of citizenship in Halifax.Back on Parliament Hill a cavalcade of musicians and other performers kept the massive crowd entertained until around midnight.Gordon Lightfoot received huge applause when he took the stage, and Prime Minister Trudeau, in his salute to the Canadian music icon, noted that Lightfoot had also performed 50 years earlier at Canada Day festivities in 1967 when the country was celebrating its 100th birthday. And when the entertainers finally left the stage, it was then time for the main act, as the skies above the Peace Tower exploded in a jaw dropping fireworks display that stamped the official exclamation mark on Canada's sesquicentennial celebration. I'm a little embarrassed': Justin Trudeau forgets Alberta in Canada Day speech-[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-July 1, 2017

Save the best for last? Prime Minister Justin Trudeau gave a shoutout to every province and territory during Canada Day celebrations on Parliament Hill Saturday, except for one of them: Alberta."We may be of every colour and creed, from every corner of the world," Trudeau said."We may live in British Columbia, Yukon, the Northwest Territories, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Nunavut, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia or Newfoundland and Labrador. But we embrace that diversity while knowing in our hearts that we are all Canadians."Alberta was included in his prepared text, but didn't make the delivery in front of thousands of spectators at the Canada 150 celebration in Ottawa.Canadian actress Sandra Oh, who co-hosted the event, made note of the mistake after Trudeau left the stage.A short time later, before introducing Canada's two new astronauts, Trudeau tried to make right with the province that slipped his mind."Let me just start by saying I'm a little embarrassed, I got excited somewhere over the Rockies," he said."Alberta, I love you. Happy Canada Day."He followed up with an apologetic tweet later in the afternoon. Some, like Alberta Wildrose Leader Brian Jean, weren't quick to let the prime minister live down the lapse.Trudeau's speech celebrated Canada's diversity and values, but also acknowledged its failures — particularly in its oppression of Indigenous people. He acknowledged Canada's history spans much longer than 150 years, and said reconciliation is a journey that will demand dedication and hard work from Canadians."As a society, we must therefore recognize past mistakes, accept our responsibilities and take action to ensure that each and every Canadian has a bright future," he said."It is a choice we make, not because of what we did, or what we were, but because of who we are."
