Projectiles from Syria land in Golan Heights; no injuries-IDF says no damage from spillover fire; incident the seventh time missiles hit Israel in a week-By Times of Israel staff June 25, 2017, 4:44 pm

A number of projectiles from Syria landed in the northern Golan Heights on Sunday for the second time in as many days, in what the IDF said was spillover fire from the Syrian civil war.The army said the missiles hit an open field and caused no injuries or damage. It was the seventh such incident in a week and came as fighting between President Bashar Assad’s regime and the numerous rebel groups in southern Syria escalated in recent weeks. On Saturday, an errant mortar shell landed in the Golan, prompting retaliatory Israeli airstrikes on Syrian military positions in southern Syria which reportedly killed 2 soldiers. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitor which has been reporting on Syria’s six-year war, quoted Syrian officials as saying that Syrian army forces had been engaged in fighting with forces of the al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Nusra Front at the time of the Israeli strikes. They accused Israel of striking Syrian army targets to aid the rebel forces.Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman warned that the regime would continue to “suffer the consequences” of any attack on Israel emanating from its territory.Israel, he said, had “no intention of accepting challenges to our sovereignty and threats to our security, even if they are caused by ‘spillover’” from Syrian infighting.“We will respond strongly, resolutely and with level-headedness to any such case,” he said. “As far as we are concerned the Assad regime is responsible for what occurs in its territory and will continue to suffer the consequences if such events recur.”

Unveiling clock showing 8,411 days left for Israel, Iranians rage against Jewish state-Parliament speaker calls Israel ‘mother of terrorism’ as Islamic Republic parades missiles, rallies in support of Palestinians and against raft of enemies-By Agencies and Times of Israel staff June 23, 2017, 11:00 am

TEHRAN — Iran held major anti-Israel rallies across the country Friday, with protesters chanting “Death to Israel” and declaring that destroying the Jewish state is “the Muslim world’s top priority.”Iranians participating in Quds Day rallies also called for unity among pro-Palestinian groups against the “child-murdering” Israeli government, according to Iran’s Tasnim News Agency.Marchers in Tehran headed from various points of the city to the Friday prayer ceremony at Tehran University. Similar demonstrations were held in other cities and towns in Iran.Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guard used the demonstration in the capital’s Valiasr Square to showcase three surface-to-surface ballistic missiles, including the Zolfaghar — the type that Iran used this week to target the Islamic State group in Syria. The Guard said it fired six such missiles on Sunday at IS targets in the city of Deir el-Zour, more than 600 kilometers (370 miles) away. The Guard said the airstrike was in retaliation for an IS attack earlier in June on Iran’s parliament and a shrine in Tehran that killed 18 people and wounded more than 50.Another missile on display at the Tehran rally was the Ghadr, with a range of 2,000 kilometers (1,250 miles) that can reach both Israel and US bases in the region.Iran’s ballistic missile program has been the subject of persistent concern in Washington and the target of repeated US sanctions.Iran claimed its missile strike on Sunday killed 360 Islamic State fighters. Israeli sources, by contrast, said the strike was a “flop,” that most of the six or seven missiles missed their targets, and that three of them fell to earth in Iraq and didn’t even reach Syria.Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, in remarks carried by the official IRNA news agency, said Israel supports “terrorists in the region.”Parliament speaker Ali Larijani, in a speech to Tehran demonstrators, called Israel the “mother of terrorism” and said that in the “20th century, there was no event more ominous than establishing the Zionist regime.”The rally also inaugurated a huge digital countdown display at Tehran Palestine Square, showing that Israel will allegedly cease to exist in 8,411 days.In 2015, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei predicted that after 25 years — by 2040 — there will no longer be a State of Israel.“Death to the House of Saud and Daesh,” demonstrators chanted, using another name for the Islamic State. “Death to America”, “Death to Israel”, “Death to the UK.”This year’s commemoration comes amid an intensifying battle for influence in the region between Shiite Iran and its Sunni arch rival Saudi Arabia who have had no diplomatic relations since January last year.State media put the number of participants at over 1 million. The anti-Israel rallies are an annual event marking Al-Quds Day, a historic Arabic name for Jerusalem. Iran says it’s an occasion to express support for the Palestinians and emphasize the importance of Jerusalem for Muslims.Iran doesn’t recognize Israel, calls for its demise, and staunchly backs terror groups, including Hamas and Hezbollah. In comments ahead of the day, Khamenei said the rallies were meant to “fight arrogance and global hegemons,” likely hinting at recent tensions with Sunni Gulf states.“Defending Palestine today is defending a reality much greater than the issue of Palestine,” he said, according to the semi-official Tasnim News site.Iran holds al-Quds day rallies held each year on the last Friday of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which is expected to end this weekend. Iran has marked the day since the start of its 1979 Islamic Revolution, when it cut relations with Israel. On Sunday, marchers in the annual Quds Day parade in London blamed a fire in a low-income apartment complex there that left at least 58 dead on “Zionists.”

Hezbollah head: ‘Hundreds of thousands’ of Muslim fighters will respond if Israel attacks-In ‘al-Quds Day’ remarks, Nasrallah says any future conflict ‘would open the door’ for gunmen from Iraq, Yemen, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan-By AFP and Times of Israel staff June 23, 2017, 10:57 pm

BEIRUT, Lebanon — The head of Lebanese terror group Hezbollah, an Iranian proxy, on Friday warned Israel against attacking Lebanon or Syria, saying “hundreds of thousands” of Arab and Muslim fighters would be ready to strike back.“The Israeli enemy should know that if it launches an attack on Syria or Lebanon, it’s unknown whether the fighting will stay just between Lebanon and Israel, or Syria and Israel,” Hassan Nasrallah said.“I’m not saying countries would intervene directly — but it would open the door for hundreds of thousands of fighters from all around the Arab and Islamic world to participate in this fight — from Iraq, Yemen, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan,” he said.Nasrallah made the remarks in a speech broadcast on television to mark Jerusalem (Quds) Day, an annual show of solidarity with the Palestinians marked by marches and speeches that rail against Israel and the West. The commemoration was first launched by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the late revolutionary leader of Iran — a main sponsor of Hezbollah and staunch rival of Israel.Hezbollah fighters from Lebanon, and others from Iran, Iraq, Pakistan and Afghanistan, are battling alongside regime forces in Syria to defend the government of President Bashar Assad. The powerful Shiite movement and Israel have fought many battles including a devastating 34-day war in 2006 that killed 1,200 people in Lebanon, mainly civilians, and 160 Israelis, mostly soldiers.Border skirmishes have broken out occasionally since then, and Nasrallah on Friday said any future confrontation would be “very costly for Israel.”Tensions were rising this week along the frontier, with Israel accusing Hezbollah of expanding observation posts to conduct reconnaissance missions across the border under cover of a purported environmental NGO.Israel’s military intelligence chief on Thursday released film and photographs of the Hezbollah positions at the border fence. In a letter to the UN Security Council, Israel’s envoy to the UN, Danny Danon, pointed to an incident in April, in which a patrol of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) was denied access to an observation post flying the flag of the NGO “Green Without Borders,” by a group of locals.Hezbollah’s purported use of such facilities under cover of the NGO is a violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, passed at the end of the Second Lebanon War in August 2006.Danon denounced the “dangerous provocation” and called on the council to demand the Lebanese government dismantle the Hezbollah outposts, as required by the resolution. The UN rejected the claim on Friday with the UNIFIL reporting that Green Without Borders members have planted trees in the area, but it “has not observed any unauthorized armed persons at the locations or found any basis to report a violation of resolution 1701,” said UN spokeswoman Eri Kaneko.Danon’s letter came on the same day that IDF intelligence chief Maj. Gen. Hertzl Halevi released video and photographs the IDF said showed the installations in question.“Hezbollah is using an environmental organization as a cover for activities along the border with Israel,” Halevi said.Earlier this week, the head of Israel’s air force said it would have “unimaginable” military power at hand in any future conflict with Hezbollah.“What the air force was able to do quantitatively in the… Lebanon war over the course of 34 days we can do today in 48-60 hours,” Major General Amir Eshel said on Wednesday.“This is potential power unimaginable in its scope, much different to what we have seen in the past and far greater than people estimate.”

As Islamic State wanes, Iran and Hezbollah could turn on Israel-With Russia’s help, the Syrian regime and Shiite axis are vanquishing the opposition – and drawing dangerously close to Israel’s border-By Avi Issacharoff June 25, 2017, 4:59 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Recent developments in the war between the Syrian regime and rebel forces show that the relative comfort zone that Israel has long enjoyed along its northern border is narrowing. The recent pummeling of the dreaded Islamic State group makes an escalation in hostilities between Israel and the forces of President Bashar Assad along with his staunch ally, the Iranian-backed Hezbollah terror group, increasingly likely. The terrible civil war ravaging Syria has for several years forced Hezbollah, deployed to the battlefield on Assad’s behalf, to limit the resources and energy it expends on confronting Israel. Some 2,000 Hezbollah fighters have been killed and 6,000 injured fighting in Syria — about a third of the organization’s fighting force. The same has been true for Syria’s standing army, which looked exhausted, almost defeated, until Russia swooped in to turn the tide.In recent weeks, the cumulative effect of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s efforts has helped swing the pendulum in favor of Assad, Hezbollah, and other Shiite militias active in the arena on behalf of Iran. The battle against the Islamic State group in Mosul, Iraq, is drawing to a close, and it is clear that next in line to fall will be Raqqa, the group’s stronghold in Syria. In other fronts, too, the Syrian army is scoring major victories, including in the Deir Ezzor region in the country’s northeast, where Assad’s forces, aided by Shiite militiamen, have broken through to the area of Abu Kamal, on the Iraqi border. It is a region where Kurdish and other forces that receive US support have been very active. Hence the recent rise in friction between the US army and Syrian forces that led to the downing of a Syrian jet.The various military factions in Syria – both pro-Assad and against – are fighting over the scraps of territory from which the Islamic State is withdrawing. Naturally, the area that worries Israel – and its neighbor to the east, Jordan – most is around Daraa, in the country’s southwest. It is where the civil war broke out in 2011, and it is a likely spot for a future last stand by Syria’s moderate opposition. The battles raging in that area, and on the nearby Syrian Golan Heights, are the ones from which ricochets occasionally fly over the border into Israeli territory. But there is no deliberate Syrian fire, and anyway Israel’s main concern isn’t errant shells. The most significant danger is that Shiite militias backing Assad will approach the borders with Jordan and Israel. While Jerusalem and Amman are cooperating on the matter, it is doubtful such cooperation can stem the advance of pro-Iranian forces, be they Hezbollah or other militias emanating from Pakistan, Iraq or Afghanistan. The Shiite axis is on the march, and the Islamic State is no longer in the breach, where it was keeping the Shiites occupied. The unofficial Israeli approach to the Syrian conflict, a prayer for the success of both sides, is becoming increasingly irrelevant as one side — that of the regime — pummels the other. The consequences of the latest developments in Syria and Iraq are echoing in Lebanon in the form of belligerent declarations by Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, who has vowed that his group’s next war with Israel will pave a path for “thousands, perhaps hundreds of thousands of fighters from all the Arab states and the Islamic world” to fall upon the Jewish state.

Israeli Arab man indicted for attempting to join Islamic State-Muhammad Ahmed Azzam, 24, of the Galilee town of Kafr Manda, allegedly contacted jihadists abroad, prepared to join them-By Times of Israel staff June 25, 2017, 4:14 pm

An Israeli Arab man was charged after he made preparations to join the Islamic State terror group, the Shin Bet security agency said Sunday. The man, identified as 24-year-old Muhammad Ahmed Azzam of the Arab town of Kafr Manda, was detained in a joint Shin Bet-Israel Police operation on June 6, the security agency said.He was arrested “in the wake of information to the effect that he supports and identifies with Islamic State, that he is in contact with IS militants and supporters, and that he was making preparations to join the organization and the fighting,” according to an official statement.Azzam allegedly has expressed support for IS ideology, was following its activities and propaganda online, and made “tangible preparations,” including establishing contact with IS operatives, to leave Israel in order to join the group’s fighting units. The statement did not specify where Azzam planned to meet up with the group, which has various affiliates and forces throughout the Middle East, from its rapidly shrinking base in Syria and Iraq to Sinai, Libya and elsewhere.Haifa district prosecutors filed an indictment against Azzam at the Haifa District Court on Sunday. The Shin Bet said Sunday it views the phenomenon of Israelis found supporting IS “as a severe strategic threat,” and promised to “continue to monitor suspects and take the necessary enforcement measures in order to thwart the dissemination of IS ideology in Israel and prevent Israelis from joining its ranks as fighters.”The Islamic State is in retreat in Iraq and Syria, pushed back by often-conflicted factions that include world powers like the US and Russia, regional actors like Turkey, Iran and Saudi Arabia, and local forces from opposing Sunni groups, Syrian government forces and Shiite militias like Hezbollah.According to the Shin Bet, as IS has fallen back, its propaganda arms have continued to broadcast a “seemingly positive picture… to potential recruits.”Islamic State does not have widespread support in Israel, and the Shin Bet estimates that 50 Arab citizens of Israel have traveled to Syria or Iraq to join the group in recent years. Over the past few years, several Arab Israelis have been jailed for efforts to join Islamic State. An Israeli Arab man was convicted on June 13 of being a member of Islamic State. The Haifa District Court found Wissam Zabidat, 42, from the northern Arab town of Sakhnin guilty of several charges, including membership in a terrorist organization, membership in an illegal group, illegal military training, and contact with a foreign agent.Wissam and his 30-year-old wife had traveled to Iraq along with their three children and spent over a year with the jihadist group before eventually escaping and making their way back to Israel, the Shin Bet security service said in a statement in October, when charges were filed against the two.The couple were tried separately, and in March wife Sabrin was sentenced to 50 months in prison.AP contributed to this report.

Israel getting better grip on online incitement, justice minister says-Year-old task force tackles offensive posts within 24 hours, Ayelet Shaked notes at cyber conference in Tel Aviv-By Shoshanna Solomon June 25, 2017, 3:41 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked said Sunday that a task force set up in March 2016 to combat online hate and incitement has managed to take down the majority of the 3,500 pages it found with offensive content to date, and that average reaction time to deal with these posts was less than 24 hours. The task force was set up following a wave of hundreds of attacks that began in October 2015, which security services said was fueled by online incitement.“Very soon it was discovered that in seven out of 10 cases, the terrorists were influenced by incitement for violence and terror to which they were exposed in social media and the internet,” Shaked said at a conference during Israel Cyber Week. “The link between incitement and terror is a new and dangerous phenomenon with strategic significance.”The unraveling of events in which Israel came to be attacked from within “made us feel vulnerable. We thought maybe we should bring down the internet in the whole area. We thought the physical forces, army, police cannot deal with this virtual penetration of our sovereignty.”This new reality required a new way of thinking and operating, she said and the legal system “acted very fast,” against its traditional “DNA, and suggesting new solutions.”Among these was the new task force, which identified offending posts and obtained court orders to take them down; increased collaboration with social media giants like Facebook, Twitter, Google and YouTube to be more active in restraining and taking down hate and incitement posts; and the proposal of new laws.In December, the Ministerial Committee for Legislation advanced the so-called Facebook bill, which would allow the state to seek court orders to force the social media site to remove certain content based on police recommendations. The government says the bill will only be invoked in cases of suspected incitement, when there is a real possibility that the material in question endangers the public or national security.Shaked said that an additional bill aims to block access to content that supports terror. The bill is in advanced stages of legislation, she said. In addition, Shaked said Israel plans to host an international conference to be attended by justice ministers to discuss the matter. She did not provide further details. At the conference on Sunday, Edna Arbel, a former Supreme Court judge who is heading a committee that investigates legal solutions to combat internet incitement and hate speech, said the legal system must be able to adapt to new realities and challenges. She said she supports “in principle” the creation of additional tools to fight the online threat, but a balance must be struck with freedom of expression and preservation of privacy.Shai Nitzan, the state prosecutor, called the internet the “new city square,” but with the crucial difference that speakers on the internet can be anonymous and reach thousands and millions of people around the world.Since the end of 201 Israel has indicted some 250 people for incitement, of which some 25 indictments were this year, he said.Increased policing by governments-Even so, Tehila Shwartz Altshuler, the head of media reform and open government projects at the Israel Democracy Institute, warned against overreaction and the curbing of civil liberties. Companies like Google, Facebook and Twitter are not just high-tech companies but also media firms and they should be regulated as such. Cooperation is the best way to get results, she said, without infringing on privacy and freedom of speech rights. The main problem, however, is that globally and also in Israel “governments are trying to use technology to increase their policing of citizens,”” she warned, including the proposed Facebook law, the biometric database that is being set up, and widespread use of online surveillance methods.Noa Elefant-Loffler, senior public policy manager at Google Israel, said that Google and YouTube are committed to being part of the solution and have been working to curb incitement and hate speech for a number of years. The main problem, however, she said, is context. “Context is king,” she said, “No machine can understand context yet,” so Google employs teams of people to take context into account regarding posts that are flagged as offensive or dangerous.Google pledges to be even more aggressive in its policies against incitement, she said, and recently announced a series of steps in this direction. These include devoting more resources to machine learning capabilities that will flag posts for review; increasing the number of employees devoted to the subject; and restricting the reach of content that is borderline, in which there is no clear violation of Google’s community code — this content will carry no ads or comments and will not be able to be recommended or shared by others.“This will help limit access to these posts,” she said. But, “there is no magic solution.”

Bowing to ultra-Orthodox pressure, PM halts pluralistic Western Wall deal-Israel’s Reform movement says freezing the plan to build mixed-gender prayer plaza harms Israel and its connection to the Jewish people; Jewish Agency expresses ‘deep disappointment’-By Amanda Borschel-Dan and Alexander Fulbright June 25, 2017, 4:06 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday suspended a government-approved plan to establish a pluralistic prayer pavilion at Jerusalem’s Western Wall, following calls by his ultra-Orthodox coalition allies to scrap the deal. The announcement was swiftly condemned by Israel’s Reform Movement and the Jewish Agency. In a statement, the Prime Minister’s Office said that Netanyahu instructed Cabinet Secretary Tzachi Braverman and Likud Minister Tzachi Hanegbi to formulate a new plan for the site.It also said construction work on the southern edge of the Western Wall plaza — where the pluralistic prayer pavilion was slated to be built — would continue uninterrupted.Netanyahu’s decision to freeze the plan came amid calls from Orthodox and ultra-Orthodox lawmakers to dial back the plan to establish an egalitarian prayer space at the Western Wall, which was approved by government ministers in January 2016.It also coincided with a High Court of Justice deadline Sunday for the state to respond to petitions on its failure to implement the agreement and construct the mixed-gender plaza near Robinson’s Arch by this week.“From our point of view this is a huge embarrassment,” the head of Israel’s Reform Movement Rabbi Gilad Kariv told The Times of Israel minutes after the announcement. “The government has acceded to the demands of the ultra-Orthodox parties,” he said, and delegitimized the government decision that was passed on January 31, 2016.“I think it is a failure of the Netanyahu government and harms the interests of Israel and its connection with the Jewish people,” said Kariv. who learned of the government decision from the media.Kariv told The Times of Israel that the High Court case was progressing apace and he hopes it may still be able to resurrect the deal.“We knew that the government was discussing the issue, but it is important to note that it did not update us with its decision. This behavior, from our point of view, shows that it is impossible to negotiate with them,” said Kariv. “We only hope that the court can defend the principles of democracy for Israel.”Jewish Agency Chairman Natan Sharansky, who was at the meeting in which Netanyahu announced his decision, said in a statement, “As chairman of The Jewish Agency for Israel, and on behalf of our partners, I must express my deep disappointment at today’s decision by the Government of Israel to suspend the implementation of its own decision to establish a dignified space for egalitarian prayer at the Western Wall.“After four years of intensive negotiations, we reached a solution that was accepted by all major denominations and was then adopted by the government and embraced by the world’s Jewish communities,” he said.“Today’s decision signifies a retreat from that agreement and will make our work to bring Israel and the Jewish world closer together increasingly more difficult. The Jewish Agency nevertheless remains staunchly committed to that work and to the principle of one wall for one people,” said Sharansky. In a statement, the Women of the Wall organization slammed the government for “kowtowing to a handful of religious extremists.”“The fact that the prime minister, who himself initiated and led the agreement is bending and retreating from that historic decision is shameful to the government and its women ministers who were exposed using their vote against women,” said Anat Hoffman, chairperson of Women of the Wall. “It’s a terrible day for women in Israel when the PM sacrifices their rights while kowtowing to a handful of religious extremists, who want to enforce their religious customs while intentionally violating the rights of the majority of the Jewish world, 51% being women.”“Women of the Wall will continue to pray as we always have in the Women’s Section at the Western Wall, with a Torah scroll and prayer shawls, until women’s equality will be established at the Kotel [Western Wall],” she added.Last week, the ultra-Orthodox parties again demanded the “total cancellation” of last year’s plan, as Israel’s Chief Rabbinate demanded it be allowed to hire its own lawyers to oppose the deal in the High Court. The Rabbinate’s request was backed up by Jewish Home Minister Uri Ariel and his party member Betzalel Smotrich in a letter they penned to Netanyahu on Thursday, which also implored the Israeli leader to scrap the deal in defiance of “extremist elements across the sea,” in an apparent reference to Reform and Conservative Jewry. On Sunday, Ariel hailed Netanyahu’s decision to freeze the plan, saying that if allowed to move forward the decision “would harm Israeli society.”“I am happy that the government today approved the decision restoring the situation at the Western Wall to what it previously was, and with this [that] we succeeded in preventing an unnecessary split among the Jewish people and an attack on the social and religious fabric of Israeli society and the Jewish people,” the agriculture minister said in a statement.Despite the opposition to the egalitarian prayer plaza by religious lawmakers, Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman said earlier Sunday that canceling the compromise to create a pluralistic prayer space at the Western Wall was damaging and that his Yisrael Beytenu party would not back it.On Thursday, the president of the Union for Reform Judaism warned that nixing the plan would be a “slap in the face to the vast majority of world Jewry.”

Abbas said enraged by Kushner meet, refuses to halt pay even to worst terrorists-Ramallah reportedly accuses US delegation of being mouthpiece for Israel, rebuffs watered-down demand to stop paying 600 prisoners serving life terms-By Times of Israel staff June 23, 2017, 1:31 pm

A meeting between Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and senior White House official Jared Kushner reportedly left the Palestinian leader fuming and refusing to agree to watered-down demands that Ramallah cut off payments for some convicted terrorists and their families.According to Palestinian sources quoted in Hebrew and Arabic media Friday, Abbas and his advisers accused the US of taking Israel’s side and refused a demand to stop paying salaries to several hundred prisoners serving time for the most serious crimes.Kushner, who is US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and chief Middle East adviser, met with Abbas in Ramallah on Wednesday, along with Trump’s international negotiator Jason Greenblatt.Kushner, making his first negotiating foray to the region, held two key meetings Wednesday– with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and then with Abbas — before heading back to Washington.Kushner began his meeting with Abbas by stating all the Israeli concerns, including stopping the payments, according to Hebrew media reports, angering Abbas.“The American delegation accepted Israel’s position with regard to paying salaries to prisoners,” a Palestinian source told Ynet, “and described it as a means of inciting terror, demanding it be stopped.”According to reports in Arabic media, the Americans watered down their demand about payments to prisoners. Originally the US wanted all payments halted, but now they only want the Palestinians to stop paying salaries to some 600 prisoners serving life sentences who are responsible for the deaths of Israelis, Israel Radio reported, quoting Arabic media. On Thursday Abbas defended payments to Palestinian prisoners, including convicted terrorists, as a “social responsibility,” and said Israel was using the issue as a pretext to avoid peace talks.Later Thursday, senior Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat accused the Netanyahu government of taking extremist positions.“Incitement and glorification of terror have been a longstanding policy by this extremist government,” Erekat said, and further accused Israel of trying to “deviate attention [from the stalled peace talks] by inventing new excuses, such as allegations of incitement.”Palestinian sources said the US officials had also taken the Israeli stance regarding incitement.“They sounded like Netanyahu’s advisers and not as honest mediators,” a Palestinian source told Haaretz.“They began by presenting Netanyahu’s claims,” the source said. He said that Abbas asked the Americans about their position on major construction projects over the Green Line recently announced by Netanyahu, “the core issues of the conflict,” but didn’t get any answer.“We told the Americans that the settlements were the source of the despair and terror because they remove any future hope for Palestinians to live in their own land,” a Palestinian source told Ynet. The source said, “We don’t have great expectations from these negotiations, but why should we pay such a high price as ending salary payments?”Reportedly Abbas refused to end the payments to prisoners, but instead insisted on restarting the trilateral committee on incitement. The committee includes Israeli, Palestinian and American officials and was formed as part of the Wye River Memorandum in 1998. The committee met every two months until the outbreak of the Second Intifada in September 2000.Earlier this week, Netanyahu accused Abbas of lying that he wants peace and “poisoning” the minds of young Palestinians, amid a resurgent efforts at peacemaking by the US.“Palestinian President Abbas tells the world that he educates Palestinian children for peace. That’s a lie,” Netanyahu tweeted in one of a series of angry tweets, preceding the arrival in the region of Kushner and Greenblatt.Sitting down with Netanyahu on Wednesday before he met with Abbas, Kushner and other US officials discussed “potential next steps” to make progress on Trump’s goal of “a genuine and lasting peace” between Israelis and Palestinians, the White House said. The meetings are aimed at laying the groundwork for a resumption of negotiations for the first time in three years.US officials, including Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, have said that they are pushing Abbas to end incitement to violence against Israel, and to stop paying stipends to terrorists and their families. At the same time, it is understood that the US does not want to impose preconditions that would prevent a resumption of substantive peace efforts.US sources confirmed that the payments to prisoners and incitement were discussed, but denied that they clouded the talks. They said that the talks mainly focused on hearing the Palestinian demands and their order of priority. But hinting at challenges facing peace efforts, both sides “underscored that forging peace will take time and stressed the importance of doing everything possible to create an environment conducive to peacemaking,” a White House statement said.A senior Palestinian official said Wednesday that the preparatory meeting with Greenblatt on Tuesday had also not gone well and became tense over the payments to prisoners. He said the Americans “are buying” Netanyahu’s complaints about Palestinian incitement, and that Greenblatt was insisting on an end to the payments. The official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was discussing a closed diplomatic meeting, said the Palestinians had rebuffed Greenblatt’s pressure and demanded an Israeli settlement freeze. He said a Palestinian delegation would head to Washington next month for further talks. In an official statement made after Wednesday’s meeting by senior Abbas aide, Nabil Abu Rudeineh said that Kushner addressed some of the thorniest issues on the table in his meeting with Abbas and stressed Trump’s commitment to restarting negotiations.“The meeting has deeply and clearly discussed all the permanent status issues, mainly refugees and prisoners,” Abu Rudeineh said, according to Palestinian media sources. “During the meeting, Kushner told President Abbas that President Trump is committed to reaching a serious peace deal.”A meeting between Trump and Abbas in Bethlehem in May was also reportedly tense, with the US leader angrily berating his counterpart over allegations of incitement.

Israeli economy pays price of elusive peace, World Bank official says-The Jewish state has done well economically, says Augusto Lopez-Claros. ‘But my point is, how much more could Israel do?’-By Shoshanna Solomon June 22, 2017, 5:40 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Israel’s economy is paying a price as its government fails to reach a permanent peace deal with its neighbors, a senior World Bank group official said in an interview this week with The Times of Israel.“There is a cost associated with an unresolved security situation,” Augusto Lopez-Claros, senior adviser, Development Economics at the World Bank Group said, speaking at the sidelines of a business conference in Jerusalem. “If one were to resolve on a permanent basis the security situation, there could be a potential driver of economic growth through increased trade and investment with the region.”The possibilities of greater regional trade and investment following a permanent resolution of the security situation are significant, he said, as Israel is geographically located in a region where there are large potential markets, which have potentially a high demand for its products including technology, agriculture and natural gas, he said. This potential is not taken into account at the moment.“There is a potential there that needs to be explored and exploited,” he said. Nations globally tend to trade and invest with their neighbors. “Geography is still important. You cannot completely neglect it. And you are disconnected. You are like an island.”For lack of peace with its Arab neighbors and amid the Palestinian conflict, Israel’s main trading partners are the US, the European Union and Asia.Lopez-Claros’s comments come amid a renewed push for peace between Israel and the Palestinians by the US administration. US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and chief Middle East adviser, Jared Kushner, met with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas Wednesday night as part of a 24-hour visit to the region in an effort to advance the administration’s ongoing push for peace negotiations. Kushner has been tasked by the president with advancing peace efforts.Israel’s economy grew 4 percent in 2016, buoyed mainly by increased consumer spending, a rise in exports, and investments. Even so, the nation’s productivity is among the lowest of OECD countries and the high-tech sector has stopped being the growth engine of the economy.Policy makers and business leaders that gathered at the Eli Hurvitz Conference on Economy and Society in Jerusalem earlier this week talked about two diverging economies developing in Israel — the innovation economy and the traditional economy, in which 90% of the population is employed. This divergence, in terms of wages, leads to an increase in economic inequality which must be halted, the speakers said. One of the keys to that aim is through increased education and vocational training.“If one were to resolve on a permanent basis the security situation, there could be a potential driver of economic growth through increased trade and investment with the region,” said Lopez-Claros, who has been with the World Bank for the past six years. This “doesn’t mean you trade less with Europe or Asia, or the US. Those will continue to remain important markets, but you can do more in the region. And that is something that cannot be neglected.”-Israel is doing well, but could be doing more-“Israel has done well — it is a much more prosperous country today than it was 20-25 years ago, it has managed to improve its infrastructure and has become a technological powerhouse. But my point is, how much more could Israel do? I think that that potential is somewhat being undermined by the unresolved security situation.”Peace could lead to lower defense spending, and those funds could be diverted to boosting education, he said. In a world that is undergoing digitization and automation, governments globally must channel more funds to education.“There is a gap between what the universities are delivering and what is needed,” he said. “This is a global problem. Some countries are doing it better than others: Scandinavian countries, for example. Israel does it well too, but it could do even better.”There must be more collaboration and feedback between universities and industries so that students attain the tools they need in a changing job landscape. “As they go through the various stages of education, students should spend every summer in Israeli companies so they can get a close look at what are the skills necessary in the marketplace.” This is already happening, Lopez-Claros said, but more is needed.-‘Disappointing’ ranking for Israel-Regulation in Israel should be cut back too, Lopez-Claros. Israel ranks 52 out of 190 in the Doing Business 2017 report of the World Bank.“For a country that is a high-income country — that has done so much already in other areas — this is a bit of a disappointment,” he said. “You would expect Israel to be in the top 10-15. It should be easily there” along with the other countries, such as New Zealand, Singapore, Sweden and Norway, that top the rank. They, like Israel have developed economies and top universities and are important tech powerhouses, he said. “So why the gap?”“One of the reasons is that business regulation, the kind of environment that regulation has created to encourage entrepreneurship, is lagging behind,” he said. “Entrepreneurs could actually operate in an environment that is friendlier – not so bureaucratic and not so costly. This whole area of business regulation has not been given the importance it deserves and the importance other countries are giving it.”

Vision and screwdrivers: Macron and Merkel converge on Europe-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-By Noah Barkin-June 25, 2017

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Back in January, when his chances of winning the French presidency were considered slim, Emmanuel Macron came to Berlin and spelled out what he felt was needed to fix Europe."As Jacques Delors said, for Europe we need a vision and a screwdriver," Macron told an audience at the Humboldt University, citing the former president of the European Commission. "Unfortunately, we currently have a lot of screwdrivers but we are still lacking a vision."Now, less than two months after surging to victory in the French election, Macron is filling the void, articulating a path forward for the continent, and crucially, bringing Germany along with him. That was the main take-away from a meeting of European Union leaders last week in which Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel stood side by side at an end-of-summit news conference and sent a message of total unity. After more than a decade of sputtering and stalling, it may be premature to declare that the Franco-German engine is revving on all cylinders again.Macron still faces the daunting challenge of delivering on his plans to reform the French economy. Only if he is successful will he end the mutual distrust between Paris and Berlin that has prevented close cooperation in past years.Merkel, for her part, must win a fourth term in September. If she does, she could still struggle to convince skeptical conservative allies to work with the centrist Macron. But the past weeks, culminating in the joint appearance in Brussels on Friday, have helped lay to rest two of the big question marks that loomed over Macron's election victory last month: whether he could maintain the momentum that propelled him into the Elysee Palace, and whether Merkel would be prepared to embrace his ideas on Europe. For the past decade, as the continent lurched from one crisis to the next, Merkel seemed more comfortable making gradual adjustments to European structures, like tightening screws with a screwdriver, than coming up with inspiring new visions. Now, with Europe out of acute crisis mode and feeling more confident against a backdrop of economic growth and political disarray in Britain and the United States, the 39-year-old Macron, emboldened by his party's strong performance in parliamentary elections this month, is stepping into the breach.-FULL WEIGHT-In Brussels, he made clear that he would not shy away from confronting countries like Poland and Hungary if their right-wing governments failed to respect European democratic values. He promised to respond in kind if countries like China and the United States do not play fair on trade. And he pressed his fellow leaders to embrace a more ambitious approach to European defense cooperation. On all three of these issues, Merkel's instinct in the past would have been to soft-pedal out of concern for sensitivities in Warsaw, Budapest, Washington, Beijing and - on the issue of defense - in Germany. But in Brussels she threw her full weight behind Macron. This did not go unnoticed in other EU delegations, particularly among eastern Europeans unsettled by the looming departure of Britain and the erratic U.S. presidency of Donald Trump."If the (Franco-German) engine works too well it is not always the best for the EU," said a senior EU diplomat from an eastern country. "We hope that they will be wise enough to control their speed."Officials in Britain and the United States are also uneasy.A more confident, assertive Europe is likely to be a tougher counterpart in Brexit negotiations. At the summit, British Prime Minister Theresa May looked diminished and defensive next to the rejuvenated duo of Merkel and Macron. While applauding the political momentum in Europe generated by Macron's victory over far-right leader Marine Le Pen, Charles Kupchan, a former European adviser to U.S. President Barack Obama, expressed concern that a bolder, brasher Europe might end up defining itself in opposition to Washington."I worry about that," Kupchan said. "The worst outcome is a revived European project that is in part about breaking with the United States."That seems unlikely given Merkel's Atlanticist leanings. But with an election looming, she has shown a willingness speak out more forcefully against the Trump administration, which is deeply unpopular in Germany.Earlier this month, she surprised people at home and abroad by stating that Europe may not be able to rely on the United States any longer and must prepare to fend for itself.Whether she persists with this defiant line at a G20 summit she will host in Hamburg on July 7-8 will be telling.-EURO ZONE-One of Europe's biggest challenges, reform of the euro zone, was not a major topic at the meeting of EU leaders in Brussels. But it is the focus of intense talks between Berlin and Paris ahead of a meeting of the two governments a week after the G20 in which a number of new bilateral initiatives are expected to be unveiled. Here too, Merkel has shown a readiness to move towards Macron.Speaking at an industry conference in Berlin last week before the EU summit, she surprised members of her own party by expressing an openness to two of Macron's most controversial ideas - the creation of a budget and a finance minister for the euro zone."That really got people's attention," said a senior French official who is involved in the preparations of the Franco-German meeting. "Paris and Berlin are edging closer than they have been in a very long time."(Additional reporting by Alastair Macdonald; editing by Anna Willard)

Leaders unimpressed by May’s offer to EU citizens By Eszter Zalan-EUOBSERVER

BRUSSELS, 23. Jun, 18:00-EU state and government heads have warned that UK prime minister Theresa May’s initial offer on post-Brexit EU citizens’ rights is lacking in detail and fail to provide appropriate safeguards and certainty.“My first impression is that the British offer is below expectations, and risks worsening the situation of citizens,” European Council president Donald Tusk said Friday (23 June), at the end of the two-day EU summit in Brussels.“But it’s going to be for our negotiating team to analyse it line-by-line,” Tusk added.Malta’s prime minister, Joseph Muscat, said that May’s offer is a “good start, but we need to see the details”.He added that he is concerned about “pitfalls” that might be created if details are not ironed out. “For example, what about non-EU citizens who are related to EU citizens? Everyone would like a situation where there is a blanket fair treatment of citizens,” Muscat said. The Brexit issue did not take up much time during the two-day EU summit. The EU leaders emphasised that Brexit talks should be conducted between the EU’s chief negotiator, Michel Barnier, and the UK’s Brexit minister, David Davis, instead of at summits.“The work of 27 member states should be given priority over Brexit negotiations,” German chancellor Angela Merkel said after the summit at a joint press conference with French president Emmanuel Macron.Merkel called the British positions “a good start”. “But it was not a breakthrough.”Macron said it is for Barnier to examine the offer. The Irish premier, Leo Varadkar, called the British PM's proposal a “positive gesture”.Echoing Muscat, Varadkar said leaders would like to see more details, for instance on what happens to family members of EU citizens who may wish to join them in the UK.Earlier on Friday, Belgian prime minister Charles Michel called May’s proposals “particularly vague”. “We don’t want a cat in the bag,” he said, adding: “We want the rights of EU citizens to be permanently guaranteed.”Dutch prime minister Mark Rutte said there were still “thousands of questions to ask”.-Reassurances-Theresa May laid out on Thursday to EU leaders the highlights of what she called a “fair and serious” offer for EU citizens living in the UK.The plan would allow EU citizens already living in the UK to stay, and May insisted she does not want to break families apart.A more detailed plan is due to be made public on Monday (26 June).May’s offer was characterised as “pathetic” and “unacceptable” by a grassroots organisation, the3million, that represents EU citizens in the UK.They would like to see a separate deal on their rights, so that even if there is no final Brexit deal, their rights would be “ring fenced”.On Friday, May said she wanted to “reassure” those citizens, insisting: “No one will have to leave, we won’t be seeing families split apart.”One of the outstanding questions is which public body will guarantee those rights after Brexit. The EU wants the European Commission to monitor the implementation of those rights and have the European Court of Justice (ECJ) - the EU’s top court, which is despised by Brexiteers - to protect and enforce the rights.European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker noted on Friday that he does not see the ECJ being excluded from the Brexit settlements, but it is for the negotiations to resolve. In the meantime, George Osborne - the former UK finance minister and current editor of The Evening Standard newspaper - reported on Friday (23 June) that May, in the days following the referendum last year, was the only cabinet minister to block a unilateral offer to EU citizens, which would have ensured that they can remain in Britain.David Cameron, the UK prime minister at that time, had prepared an offer to give EU citizens certainty after the Brexit referendum, but it was not supported by his home secretary, Theresa May.Dutch liberal MEP Sophie In't Veld reacted to the report by tweeting: “Ruthless, heartless, calculating. Total disdain for human rights.”

UK: All building cladding samples tested failed fire safety-[Associated Press]-SYLVIA HUI-YAHOONEWS-June 25, 2017

LONDON (AP) — Britain's government urged local officials across the country Sunday to urgently submit samples of tower block cladding after tests found that all samples tested so far have failed fire safety standards. In London, officials tried Sunday to complete the evacuation of hundreds of apartments in four towers deemed unsafe, but faced resistance as several families refused to budge. The government has collected 34 samples of external cladding — panels widely used to insulate buildings and improve their appearance — and all failed a "combustibility test," Community Secretary Sajid Javid said. The national testing was ordered after a June 14 fire engulfed Grenfell Tower in London, killing at least 79 people. The tower's cladding was believed to have rapidly spread that blaze. The samples came from 17 different locations around the country, including London, Manchester, Plymouth and Portsmouth.A public inquiry is due to determine how the unsafe cladding was allowed to be fitted onto Grenfell in the first place. In north London, Camden Council ordered residents at Chalcots Estate to leave some 600 apartments late Friday as a precaution after fire inspectors found problems with the blocks' fire doors and gas pipes. The council said those issues, combined with the flammable cladding that encased the buildings, meant residents had to leave immediately. Now hundreds of residents face up to four weeks in temporary accommodations as workers try to upgrade the buildings' fire safety features. Around 20 families wanted to stay put, but council leader Georgia Gould say they must leave.Refurbishment of the Chalcots towers was overseen by Rydon, the same company involved in the recent renovation of the now-devastated Grenfell Tower.London Mayor Sadiq Khan backed Camden Council's decision to evacuate the apartment blocks."I think they've done the right thing. Look, you've got to err on the side of caution. You can't play Russian roulette with people's safety," he told Sky News.

Tropical Storm Dora forms off Mexico's Pacific coast-[Associated Press]-YAHOONEWS-June 25, 2017

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Newly formed Tropical Storm Dora was gathering force off the Pacific coast of Mexico on Sunday, and forecasters said it was expected to bring heavy rains without making a direct hit on land.Dora was centered about 180 miles (295 kilometers) southwest of Acapulco and was moving toward the west-northwest at 12 mph (19 kph), according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center. The storm had maximum sustained winds of 50 mph (85 kph) and forecasters said it could reach hurricane force on Monday while moving roughly parallel to the coast and then curving toward the west. The hurricane center said that Dora is expected to bring 1 to 3 inches (2.5 to 7.5 centimeters) of rain to coastal areas, with as much as 5 inches (12.5 centimeters) falling in a few places.

Hopes fade in China for 93 missing in landslide-[Reuters]-By Sue-Lin Wong-YAHOONEWS-June 25, 2017

MAO COUNTY, China (Reuters) - Rescue workers in southwestern China pulled bodies out of piles of rock and mud on Sunday as they searched for 93 people missing after a landslide buried a mountain village, with some residents giving up hope of finding survivors.A huge landslide crashed down on the village of Xinmo, in mountainous Sichuan province, as dawn broke on Saturday.Authorities at the scene said on Sunday that 10 bodies had been confirmed recovered, contradicting a report by the Xinhua state news agency on Saturday saying that 15 people had been confirmed killed. On Sunday industrial excavators removed rubble at the site of the landslide while workers in hard hats searched for signs of life as relatives of the lost cried or looked on stone-faced nearby."This is useless," villager Han Jianying, searching for missing family members, told Reuters. "Everyone's going to be in pieces anyway."Heavy rain triggered the landslide, authorities said.More light showers are likely but are not expected to affect the search, state broadcaster China Central Television reported.A couple and their two-month-old baby were the only survivors reported to have been found alive. Authorities reduced the number of missing after 15 people were confirmed as safe, the Xinmo village propaganda department said on its microblog. It was not clear if the 15 had been rescued or had simply been away at the time of the disaster. The rescue involved more than 3,000 people despite the danger of more landslides, Xinhua reported.Geological experts said the chances of anyone surviving under the rubble were slim, Xinhua reported."We weren't able to pull anyone out alive," said Wu Youheng, who lives in a neighboring village and rushed to help on Saturday."We pulled out two people but they were already dead. I think it's too late, they're unlikely to find anyone else alive."The area is prone to landslides but the scale of Saturday's slide was unprecedented, Wu added.Wu's wife, Zhang Xiaohong, said they often sleep in other villages for fear of landslides but could not afford to move to a safer part of Mao county.County residents are primarily poor farmers of the Qiang ethnic minority and the area is the target of a poverty alleviation project, government officials said.Much of those efforts focuses on attracting tourists to nearby scenic spots and an ancient village. Xinhua reported that all 142 tourists in the area had been evacuated from the area. The names of the missing were posted on government websites.Wang Yong, a member of China's State Council, or cabinet, dispatched to the disaster site, urged an all-out search-and-rescue effort and measures to prevent further disasters by monitoring geological activity, Xinhua reported.U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, in offering his condolences, said in a statement that the United Nations is prepared to offer any support.Sichuan province is prone to earthquakes, including an 8.0 magnitude tremor in central Sichuan's Wenchuan county in 2008 that killed nearly 70,000 people. For a graphic on the landslide in China, click: http://fingfx.thomsonreuters.com/gfx/rngs/CHINA-LANDSLIDE/010041RT3V8/CHINA-LANDSLIDE.jpg-(Additional reporting by Reuters television, Jake Spring in BEIJING and Michelle Nichols in NEW YORK; Writing by Jake Spring; Editing by Simon Cameron-Moore, Robert Birsel and David Goodman)

Power restored to all Red Deer homes following windstorm-[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-June 24, 2017

Five days after a windstorm pummeled Red Deer with winds of more than 110 km/h, power has been restored to the entire city and a state of local emergency has been lifted, officials said.Tara Shand, a public information officer with the City of Red Deer, said that as far as they know, power has been restored to every home affected by the storm."There may be, as there always can be, some pockets of the area or some scattered houses that are without power that we don't know about," Shand told CBC News Saturday."If you currently don't have power, you need to phone into our call centre and let us know. Because as it stands right now, the city is fully restored."As many as 35 per cent of homes in the city were without power after the storm, which downed 15 power lines and damaged 40 power poles throughout the city.City officials, along with some assistance from the City of Edmonton, worked to clean up the mess and restore power. On Friday, officials estimated power would be restored to all residents within two days. Shand said crews were a bit ahead of schedule."We certainly had crews working around the clock, 24/7, to restore power across the city," she said.-Friends and family helped too-But while crews deserve much of the credit for getting the entire city's power grid back up and running, Shand said the community deserves some props too."When our crews worked extremely hard and we're certainly very proud of that, we're also enormously proud of our community and all of the work that they have been doing," she said.Shand said the city is encouraging residents to share stories of their neighbours, friends and family helping each other fout in the immediate aftermath of the windstorm."We really just want to give a big shoutout to our community," she said. "We have people who always come together to support each other. It's just magnified in circumstances like this."Residents can share their story on the City of Red Deer's Facebook page or by emailing communications@reddeer.ca.

Spain fights forest fire in Donana UNESCO nature reserve-[Associated Press]-JOSEPH WILSON-YAHOONEWS-June 25, 2017

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — A forest fire in southern Spain forced the evacuation of 1,000 people and is threatening a national park famous for its biodiversity, authorities said Sunday. The flames have advanced eastward and have entered Donana National Park, one of Spain's most important nature reserves and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1994. The park, which has over 50,000 hectares (123,550 acres) of wetlands and woods, is an important stop for migratory birds from Africa and Europe and is home to a variety of animals, including the highly endangered Iberian lynx and the Iberian imperial eagle."The fire has entered in the limits of the reserve, and that is where we are focusing our efforts," Jose Gregorio Fiscal Lopez from the regional Andalusian authority in charge of the environment told Spanish national television.Susana Diaz, the regional president of Andalusia, said "there's no risk to the population" after a 1,000 people were evacuated from campsites and houses near the town of Moguer on Spain's southern coast where the fire started on Saturday night. By midday Sunday, at least 750 people were allowed to return.Still, Diaz said fighting the fire was proving difficult due to the hot, dry weather, with temperatures reaching 39 degrees Celsius (102 degrees Fahrenheit), and shifting winds. Over 150 firefighters and 21 air units were combating the blaze Sunday after televised images showed trees engulfed by flames overnight."It's still very early, but we are not ruling out the human factor" as a possible cause of the fire, said Diaz. She also thanked Spain's King Felipe VI for his phone call of concern about the fire. The fire comes a week after wildfires killed 64 people in neighboring Portugal, which like Spain is suffering from lack of rain and high temperatures.

Six children killed in blast in northwestern Pakistani village-[Reuters]-By Saud Mehsud-YAHOONEWS-June 25, 2017

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Six children were killed in a village in northwestern Pakistan on Sunday when they picked up an explosive device that looked like a toy, officials said.At least 31 people, including several children, have been left disabled or killed in blasts from improvised explosive devices (IEC) since 2016 in the South Waziristan region, part of Pakistan's troubled tribal areas, senior government official Muhammed Sohaib said.Muhammed Umer, whose nephew was one of two children wounded, in the blast, said the children were playing when they found something that looked like a toy."Four of them died on the spot, one on the way to hospital, and one at the hospital," he said.Senior government official Muhammed Sohaib said the political administration would provide compensation for the families and take care of the children's medical bills. On Saturday, two children were killed in a nearby village when they stepped on a landmine while playing in the fields.Over a million people were displaced from the region after the Pakistan army began battling the Taliban in 2009, according to United Nations figures. Many have returned home this year, often to villages reduced to rubble.South Waziristan residents often have to travel five to six hours for healthcare and the hospital in district capital Wana is severely ill-equipped.(Reporting by Saad Sayeed; editing by Susan Thomas)

Erdogan dismisses pledges over weapons for Kurds in Syria-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-June 25, 2017

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Sunday countries which promised to get back weapons supplied to Kurdish YPG fighters in northern Syria were trying to trick Turkey and would eventually realize their mistake.Ankara was infuriated by a U.S. decision last month to arm the YPG, which Washington sees as a vital ally in the battle against Islamic State in its Syrian stronghold of Raqqa but which Turkey deems an extension of the outlawed Kurdish PKK.The PKK, designated a terrorist group by the United States, the European Union and Turkey, has been waging an insurgency in southeastern Turkey since the 1980s.Turkish defense ministry sources said on Thursday the United States had pledged that weapons provided to the YPG would be taken back once Islamic State was defeated. However Erdogan, addressing members of his ruling AK Party in a speech marking the start of the Islamic Eid holiday, appeared to dismiss those assurances, saying Turkey's friends and allies were cooperating with terrorists."The ones who think they are tricking Turkey by saying they are going to get back the weapons that are being given to this terrorist organization will realize that they are making a mistake eventually," he said."But it will be too late for them," he added, saying that if violence spilled over Syria's border into Turkey, Ankara would hold to account anyone who supplied arms to the YPG."We will make the real owners of those weapons... pay for any bullet that will be fired to our country, for every drop of blood that will be shed," he said.U.S. President Donald Trump decided to arm the YPG fighters, who form a main part of the U.S.-backed force fighting Islamic State inside Raqqa, despite protests from NATO ally Ankara and a direct appeal from Erdogan at a White House meeting last month.Erdogan said the decision contravened the military alliance's framework of cooperation.Faced with turmoil across its southern border, Turkey last year sent troops into Syria to support Syrian rebels fighting both Islamic State and Kurdish forces who control a large part of Syria's northern border region."I want all the world to know that in northern Syria, on our border, we are never going to allow a terrorist state to be established," Erdogan said.(Reporting by Omer Berberoglu; Writing by Dominic Evans; Editing by Gareth Jones)

Thousands protest against Belgian nuclear reactors-[Associated Press]-YAHOONEWS-June 25, 2017

BERLIN (AP) — Thousands of protesters are demanding that Belgium immediately shut down two nuclear reactors because of safety concerns.German news agency dpa reported that people from Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands formed a human chain across the border triangle of the three countries on Sunday.Protesters are concerned over the safety of the pressure vessels at the Tihange 2 and Doel 3 reactors in Belgium.Germany, which plans to switch off all of its nuclear reactors by 2022, is sensitive to concerns about nuclear plants outside of the country.German Environment Minister Barbara Hendricks urged Belgium last year to take the two reactors offline "until open safety questions are cleared up."Berlin also has called on France to shut down its oldest plant, at Fessenheim on the German border.

Overturned oil tanker explodes in Pakistan, killing 153-[Associated Press]-IRAM ASIM-YAHOONEWS-June 25, 2017

BAHAWALPUR, Pakistan (AP) — An overturned oil tanker burst into flames in Pakistan on Sunday, killing 153 people who had rushed to the scene of the highway accident to gather leaking fuel, a hospital official said as the death toll continued to rise.Dr. Javed Iqbal at Bahawalpur's Victoria Hospital in south Punjab said the latest deaths occurred at a hospital in Multan where some of the 50 critically injured, many of whom suffered extensive burns, had been taken. The death toll could rise further as dozens are still in critical condition, said Dr. Mohammad Baqar, a senior rescue official in the area. There were dozens of other injuries of varying degree, he said.Local news channels showed black smoke billowing skyward and scores of burned bodies, as well as rescue officials speeding the injured to hospital and army helicopters ferrying the wounded.Saznoor Ahmad, 30, whose two cousins were killed in the fire, said the crowd of people screamed as the flames engulfed them."The fire moved so fast," he said. When the flames subsided the field was strewn with bodies, and nearby were the charred shells of motorcycles and cars that the villagers had used to race to the scene. As the wounded cried out for help, residents wandered through the area looking for loved ones.Zulkha Bibi was searching for her two sons."Someone should tell me about my beloved sons, where are they? Are they alive or are they no longer in this world? Please tell me," she pleaded. The disaster came on the eve of the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan. While Saudi Arabia and most other Muslim countries celebrated the holiday Sunday, Pakistanis will mark it on Monday. The tanker was driving from the southern port city of Karachi to Lahore, the Punjab provincial capital, when the driver lost control and crashed on the national highway outside Bahawalpur.A loudspeaker atop a local mosque alerted villagers to the leaking fuel, and scores raced to the site with jerry cans, said Rana Mohammad Salim, deputy commissioner of Bahawalpur.Highway police moved quickly to redirect traffic but couldn't stop the scores of villagers who raced to collect the fuel, spokesman Imran Shah told a local TV channel. When the fire erupted, the same mosque loudspeaker called on the remaining villagers to help put it out.Mohammed Salim ran toward the smoke carrying buckets of water and sand, but said the heat was too intense to reach those in need."I could hear people screaming but I couldn't get to them," he said.Abdul Malik, a local police officer who was also among the first to arrive, described a "horrible scene.""I have never seen anything like it in my life. Victims trapped in the fireball. They were screaming for help," he said. When the fire subsided, "we saw bodies everywhere, so many were just skeletons. The people who were alive were in really bad shape," he said.Eyewitnesses said about 30 motorcycles that had carried villagers to the accident site lay charred nearby. Eight other vehicles were destroyed, they said.A state of emergency was declared at the Victoria Hospital in Bahawalpur, said Dr.Iqbal. Within 15 minutes of the fire the hospital had called in extra doctors and nurses, and had formed a team to handle the emergency.Iqbal said most of the patients suffered burns to upward of 80 percent of their bodies. After being stabilized 22 patients were transferred by C-130 aircraft to hospitals in the provincial capital, Lahore. Some of the most badly burned were evacuated by army helicopters to Multan, about 100 kilometers (60 miles) away. The dead included men, women and children. Many were burned beyond recognition, Baqar said, and will have to be identified using DNA testing.

Israel: Errant fire from Syria lands in Golan for 2nd day-[Associated Press]-YAHOONEWS-June 25, 2017

JERUSALEM (AP) — The Israeli army says several projectiles fired from Syria have landed in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights for a second consecutive day.The military says the projectiles landed in an open area and there were no injuries. It said they were the result of "errant" fire. The military did not immediately react. But on Saturday, it carried out a series of airstrikes in Syria in response to similar fire.Israel has largely stayed out of the fighting during the six-year civil war in neighboring Syria. But it has carried out a number of strikes in response to errant fire spilling over into the Israeli side of the Golan. It also is believed to have carried out airstrikes on suspected weapons shipments to its archenemy Hezbollah, whose fighters are backing Syrian forces.

China aims to improve ties between Afghanistan, Pakistan-[Associated Press]-YAHOONEWS-June 25, 2017

ISLAMABAD (AP) — China's foreign minister says Beijing will hold a dialogue with Afghanistan and Pakistan to help improve relations between the two South Asian neighbors.Wang Yi said during a visit to Pakistan on Sunday that foreign ministers from the three countries would discuss relations, with an emphasis on economic cooperation.Afghanistan and Pakistan have accused each other of turning a blind eye to militants operating along their porous border. Pakistan's construction of a fence along part of the frontier has also caused tensions, as Afghanistan does not recognize the colonial-era line as an international border.

Iran mocks reports its Syria missile strikes fell short-[Associated Press]-YAHOONEWS-June 25, 2017

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran said Sunday the two-stage missiles it fired at Islamic State targets in Syria broke apart over the Iraqi desert as planned, mocking reports that some of the projectiles fell short.State TV's website quoted the airspace division chief of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh as saying "we had coordinated the fall of the engines in the desert in Iraq" in advance."The missiles we used were two-stage, it means that the engine separates from the warhead," said Hajizadeh.Hajizadeh said U.S. drones hovered over the targets after shortly the Iranian missiles hit them. He said the U.S. may have been informed beforehand about the attack, as they had informed the Russian military, which may have relayed the information to the Americans. The Guard said it fired six such missiles on Sunday at IS targets in the city of Deir el-Zour, more than 600 kilometers (370 miles) away.He mocked media reports citing Israeli sources who said some of the missiles fell short of their targets, suggesting that the Israelis were unable to identify two-stage missiles, which are designed to split apart mid-flight."Pity those who call themselves experts and do not understand that these were the first-stage engines (that fell), while the warheads hit targets."Iranian reports said the guard launched six Zolfasghar and Qiam missiles. The latter have detachable warheads.Iran says it is continuously developing its missile program; a key reason U.S. President Donald Trump's administration has put Iran "on notice".Iran said the strikes were in retaliation for the attack by five militants linked to the Islamic State group that stormed Iran's parliament and a shrine to revolutionary leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini this month, killing at least 18 people and wounding more than 50.Iran has long supported Syrian President Bashar Assad in his fight against IS and other extremists groups.

Mosul celebrates first Eid without Islamic State in years-[Reuters]-By Alaa Marjani-YAHOONEWS-June 25, 2017

MOSUL, Iraq (Reuters) - People in the Iraqi city of Mosul celebrated their first Muslim Eid holiday without Islamic State in years on Sunday after the militants were ejected from much of the city, and hoped the battle to recapture the remaining area would soon be over.Children gathered in squares on the eastern side of the city. Some played on old swings and others with toy guns and rifles, which were among the toys allowed by Islamic State militants after they took over the city in June 2014.The militants implemented an extreme version of Islam which associated toys with a face, like dolls, with idolatry. They encouraged youngsters to train on weapons and changed text books to reflect their military ideology. Children were asked to add up bombs or bullets in math exercises.Eid prayers were allowed under Islamic State but festivities were not.But for many, Sunday's Eid celebrations were overshadowed by the destruction of their historic leaning minaret, blown up by the militants on Wednesday, and fears for thousands of civilians trapped in the Old City in western Mosul still under Islamic State control."It won't be real Eid before we return home," said a man in his sixties, displaced from the western side of the city, across the Tigris river, where fighting continues. Some expressed sadness over the destruction of the 850-year-old Grand al-Nuri mosque and its leaning 150-foot (45-metre) minaret."Eid is not the same," said a man who declined to give his name as fear is still present even though Iraqi forces dislodged the insurgents from the eastern part of the city months ago.Iraqi forces took the eastern side from Islamic State in January, after 100 days of fighting, and started attacking the western side in February. The militants are now besieged in Mosul's Old City."As our heroic forces are closer to declaring final victory over the Daesh (Islamic State) gangs, I offer my most sincere congratulations for Eid al-Fitr," Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said in a statement.A U.S.-led international coalition is providing air and ground support in the 8-month-old offensive to drive the militants from their de facto capital in Iraq.About 350 Islamic State fighters, most of them non-Iraqis, are defending their remaining stronghold in Mosul's densely populated Old City, an Iraqi general said on Sunday. He expected the battle for the city to end in days.-TRAPPED-"Most of the dead bodies are foreigners, most of the fighters are foreigners, we see some trying to escape across the Tigris," said Major-General Sami al-Arithi, a Counter Terrorism Service (CTS) commander. The U.S.-trained urban warfare units are leading the fight in the narrow alleyways of the historic district which lies by the western bank of the Tigris.More than 50,000 civilians, about half the Old City's population, remain behind Islamic State lines, complicating the troops' advance, Arithi told state TV.The civilians are trapped in crumbling old houses in harrowing conditions, with little food, water or medicines, according to those who have escaped.Aid organizations say Islamic State has stopped many from leaving, using them as human shields. Hundreds of civilians fleeing the Old City have been killed in the past three weeks.Iraqi authorities were hoping to declare victory in the northern city by Eid, a three-day festival which started on Sunday for Mosul's Sunni Muslim population and many Iraqi Shi'ites, celebrating the end of the fasting month of Ramadan.Arithi said the CTS were about 25 meters (yards) from the Nuri mosque, from where Islamic State's leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi proclaimed his "caliphate" over parts of Iraq and Syria three years ago.The Iraqi government once hoped to take Mosul by the end of 2016, but the fighting has dragged on as the militants reinforced positions in civilian areas, launched suicide car bomb attacks, laid traps and kept up sniper and mortar fire. The fall of Mosul would mark the end of the Iraqi half of the "caliphate". Islamic State remains in control of large areas of both Iraq and Syria.Baghdadi has left the fighting in Mosul to local commanders and has been assumed to be hiding in the Iraqi-Syrian border area. There has been no confirmation of Russian reports over the past week that he has been killed. In Syria, the insurgents' "capital", Raqqa, is nearly encircled by a U.S.-backed, Kurdish-led coalition.(Writing by Maher Chmaytelli; Editing by Janet Lawrence)

ROMANS 1:18-32
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;
19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.
20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.
24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:(HOMOSEXUALITY,AND ALL SEX SINS)
25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:(LESBIENS)
27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly,(SODOMITES) and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.(AIDS ETC)
28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;
29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,
31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:
32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

GOD CREATED THEM MALE AND FEMALE IN MARRIAGE

GENESIS 1:27-28
27  So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
28  And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply,(HAVE LOTS OF CHILDREN) and replenish the earth,(HOMOSEXUALS CAN NOT REPLENISH THE EARTH WITH CHILDREN)(BY HAVING SEX WITH EACH OTHER) and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

GENESIS 2:21-24
21  And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;
22  And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.
23  And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.
24  Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

MATTHEW 19:4-6
4  And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,
5  And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?
6  Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

Istanbul Pride march to go on despite governor's ban-[Associated Press]-ZEYNEP BILGINSOY-YAHOONEWS-June 25, 2017

ISTANBUL (AP) — Activists for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex rights said they will march for LGBT pride in Istanbul on Sunday, despite a ban by the governor.Organizers of the 2017 Istanbul LGBTI Pride called for the gathering to begin at 5 p.m. (14:00 GMT) in central Taksim Square, using a Turkish hashtag for "we march."The Istanbul governor's office on Saturday banned the event — for the third year in a row — citing reasons of safety and public order. The statement also said the governor's office had not received a valid parade application, a claim rejected by organizers.Police barricades, riot-control vehicles and buses were dispatched to the area Sunday afternoon and a helicopter buzzed overhead. The governor's ban also cited "serious reactions by different segments of society" as several nationalist and religious groups called for the march's cancellation. But Pride organizers said in a statement Sunday that the threats themselves should be dealt with rather than limiting demonstrations."Our security will be provided by protecting the rights of all humans, without discrimination, and protecting social peace. Our security will be provided by recognizing us in the constitution, by securing justice, by equality and freedom," the statement said.LGBT activists have long lobbied unsuccessfully to have sexual orientation and gender identity covered by Turkish laws protecting civil rights and prohibiting hate speech. Homosexuality has been legal in Turkey since the republic's founding more than nine decades ago.The Turkish government says there is no discrimination against LGBT individuals and that current laws already protect each citizen. It also insists that perpetrators of hate crimes are prosecuted.Turkish authorities allowed pride marches to take place for more than a decade since the first one was held in 2003. Up to 100,000 people attended Istanbul Pride in 2014.But in 2015, police dispersed crowds using tear gas and water cannons after a last-minute ban. In 2016, amid a spate of deadly attacks blamed on the Islamic State group or on outlawed Kurdish militants, the event was banned again but participants still tried to gather.Police dispersed the crowds in Taksim and prevented a press statement but activists went live on Facebook, reading the statement, from multiple points in the city.Pride organizers think the celebrations were banned the past two years because they coincided with the holy month of Ramadan and a rise in conservatism. Sunday's march is on the first day of the Eid al-Fitr holiday, marking the end of a month of fasting.
