1,800 East Jerusalem homes set for approval for Jewish residents-Among plans to be reviewed in two weeks is construction of four buildings in place of existing Palestinian homes in Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood-By Jacob Magid July 3, 2017, 9:25 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

The Jerusalem District Planning and Building Committee is set to review and advance this month construction for some 1,800 houses in East Jerusalem.During meetings set for both this Tuesday and July 16, the Finance Ministry body is slated to approve a stage known as “depositing” for over 1,060 homes in the Pisgat Ze’ev neighborhood and 684 units in the Gilo, Neve Ya’akov, and Ramot neighborhoods.Following the deposit stage is a roughly two-month period during which the public can file objections to the approval. These are typically submitted by anti-settlement watchdogs such as Peace Now or Bimkom, or private Palestinian landowners; though usually with little success. The proposal is slated to be one of the largest housing projects over the pre-1967 Green Line in recent years, a period when Israel faced significant international pressure led by former US president Barack Obama to halt construction in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.Israel annexed East Jerusalem after the 1967 Six Day War and considers it part of its undivided capital. The government does not regard building in the city as settlement activity and has said it maintains the right to build anywhere within municipal boundaries. The state has worked to solidify its control over the area with a string of moves. This, despite the expectation of Palestinian Authority leaders that East Jerusalem be the capital of their future state.Among the more controversial of the plans set to be reviewed by the committee on July 16 is the construction of four buildings in place of already existing homes in the middle of mostly Arab neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah, even though the Palestinian families are bitterly opposed to the move.According to the 1950 Absentee Property Law, the Jewish heirs who owned the homes prior to Israel’s establishment in 1948 have the right to reclaim the property, so long as the Palestinian owners are compensated.Right-wing groups over the past several decades have been working to resettle the Jewish families, but in 1988, the High Court of Justice ruled that the Palestinian families living on the property would be granted the status of “protected tenants,” so long as they continued to pay rent. While the Jewish owners of the Sheikh Jarrah homes are still in legal battles with the current Palestinian tenants in order to seize the buildings, the law still allows them to now go ahead to raze and rebuild them as long as the “protected tenants” do not lose their right to live in the new structures; thereby allowing for the advancement of the plans by the Jerusalem planning committee.JTA contributed to this report.

PLO official slams US envoy Haley for leading anti-Palestinian ‘crusade’-Hanan Ashrawi says UN ambassador uses intimidation and threats against anyone who challenges Israeli impunity-By AFP July 5, 2017, 7:34 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

A senior Palestinian official on Wednesday blasted US President Donald Trump’s United Nations envoy, accusing her of carrying out a “crusade” against the Palestinian people.Hanan Ashrawi, an senior member of the Palestine Liberation Organization, said Nikki Haley was leading a “one-woman crusade … against Palestine and the Palestinian people individually and collectively.”“Through an obsessive and targeted campaign of intimidation and threats, Miss Haley’s crusade does not miss an opportunity to put pressure on anyone that seeks to challenge Israeli impunity,” she added.Ashrawi said Haley was echoing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.Israeli foreign ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon defended Haley’s work.“Small wonder Hanan Ashrawi is unhappy – @nikkihaley fights for a fair treatment of #Israel, exactly what the #Palestinians don’t want…,” he wrote on Twitter.Small wonder Hanan Ashrawi is unhappy –@nikkihaley fights for a fair treatment of #Israel, exactly what the #Palestinians don't want…— Emmanuel Nahshon (@EmmanuelNahshon) July 5, 2017-Palestinian officials have privately expressed increasing alarm at the Trump administration’s pro-Israel stance, as the US president seeks to restart peace negotiations. However, until Wednesday, they had publicly refrained from criticizing senior US officials.Haley visited Israel and the Palestinian Authority territories in June.Ashrawi said Haley was “compounding the victimization of the Palestinian people and browbeating the institutions that are meant to defend their rights”.The statement was distributed by the PLO.Since being nominated by Trump after his November victory, Haley has consistently accused the United Nations of systematic bias against Israel. The US vetoed the appointment of a former Palestinian prime minister as UN envoy to Libya, while Haley has called on UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres to intervene to block a forthcoming vote on the city of Hebron which declares the West Bank city under threat.Trump came to office seeking to pursue what he has called the “ultimate deal” and has pledged to restart negotiations between Israeli and Palestinian leaders. But Arab media reports claim talks between the Palestinian leadership and Trump and his team — including his son-in-law Jared Kushner — have been fractious, allegations denied by the Palestinians.Ashrawi said Haley was undermining the chances of peace by “pursuing her own agenda consistent with her anti-Palestinian obsession and as an apologist for Israel.”Israel gained control of East Jerusalem, the West Bank, and other territories, which Palestinians want to have as their state, in 1967’s Six Day War.In December, the United Nations Security Council adopted a landmark resolution condemning Israeli settlements in the Palestinian territories.

IDF officer killed in Hebron accident remembered as ‘hero, beautiful boy’-Lt. David Golovenchik was shot in accidental discharge during drill; IDF freezes all training and launches probe into incident-By Times of Israel staff July 5, 2017, 7:14 pm

Family, friends and comrades gathered on Wednesday to bury 1st Lt. David Golovenchik, who was killed in Hebron on Tuesday, when one of his soldiers accidentally discharged his weapon and struck him during a nighttime drill. The funeral began shortly after 4 p.m. at the Mount Herzl military cemetery in Jerusalem.Golovenchik’s brother, one of his four siblings, spoke over the open grave, telling the crowd in a choked voice that he felt he was living “in a dream, I can’t accept it.”His sister Ruti eulogized him: “My David, my hero, my beautiful boy, you were so beautiful. You were the youngest, but acted like a big brother. You really were my big brother. I learned everything from you.”“I have no words, I don’t know what to say,” his mother told the gathered crowd over the grave. “For 22 years, I had a privilege, and I thank God for that wonderful gift.”Golovenchik was shot during a routine platoon drill by his Golani infantry company at around 8 p.m. Tuesday that attempted to simulate a stabbing attack at the Jilber checkpoint, between Hebron’s Palestinian and Jewish neighborhoods.According to an initial probe of the incident, soldiers participating in the drill neglected to clear their weapons of ammunition prior to starting the drill, in violation of safety regulations.During the drill, a rifle of one of the soldiers was discharged, hitting Golovenchik in the upper body. Only one bullet was fired, investigators said.Golovenchik was evacuated in critical condition by helicopter, but later died of his wounds.Following the accident, IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Gadi Eisenkot ordered a halt to all training exercises on Thursday and a review of safety precautions throughout all the IDF’s combat units. The army also launched a full investigation into the incident.Golovenchik, 22, from the settlement of Efrat, is survived by his parents, two brothers and two sisters. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of first lieutenant.

Israel engaged in wide effort against enemy rockets, says IDF chief-Lt. Gen. Gadi Eisenkot tells Knesset committee that IDF now more capable than has ever been, engaged in campaign to stop Hezbollah obtaining accurate missiles-By Stuart Winer July 5, 2017, 5:06 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot said Wednesday that Israel is in the midst of a major campaign to thwart attempts by Iran, Syria, and the Lebanon-based Hezbollah terrorist organization to arm themselves with accurate missiles.Addressing the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense committee, the army’s top officer gave a review of current security threats against the Jewish state.Eisenkot said that the primary concern for Israel is what he called the “accuracy project” — efforts by Iran, Syria and Hezbollah to equip themselves with accurate missiles.“We are engaged in a whole campaign against the accuracy project and it is our top priority,” he noted.Regarding the efforts by Hezbollah to obtain advanced rockets through Syria, Eisenkot said, “We are working all the time against the project with a wide variety of tools that it is best to keep quiet about, and with the aim of not causing a deterioration [in the situation].”Iran has reportedly begun constructing new missile factories in Lebanon after Israeli airstrikes in Syria destroyed several shipments of rockets destined for southern Lebanese launching pads in recent years.Eisenkot said “decreasing Iranian influence in the areas near Israel’s borders is no less important than defeating Islamic State, and for Israel perhaps even more.”On Sunday, Defense Minister Avidgor Liberman issued a public warning to Hezbollah and its Iranian patrons over the development of rocket manufacturing installations inside Lebanon.“We are fully aware” of the rocket factories, Liberman told military correspondents in a briefing in Tel Aviv. “We know what needs to be done… We won’t ignore the establishment of Iranian weapons factories in Lebanon.”Last month, at the Herzliya Conference, IDF intelligence chief Maj. Gen. Herzl Halevi said that “Iran has been working for the past year to set up indigenous infrastructures for producing precise munitions both in Lebanon and Yemen. We can’t ignore that, and we won’t.”On Wednesday, Eisenkot assured MKs that Israel’s military capability is the best it has ever been.“The IDF has an operational intelligence capability that it has not had since its inception,” he said. “Eleven years after the Second Lebanon War, there is a very good security reality on both sides of the border. The time was used to dramatically improve the IDF’s ability.”However, Hezbollah is constantly breaking the terms of the ceasefire, Eisenkot warned.“There are constant violations of the [UN] resolution 1701 by the Hezbollah organization by using civilian and built-up areas for cover.”“UNIFIL contributes to the quiet but is not doing enough to reflect Hezbollah’s permanent violation to the UN decision-makers,” he said referring to the UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon.Eisenkot also touched on a controversial plan, allegedly approved by the security cabinet, that would reportedly have approved construction of some 15,000 apartments in Qalqilya, a Palestinian city in the West Bank. After news of the scheme broke, some cabinet members, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, distanced themselves from the plan claiming they had never agreed to such extensive expansion of a Palestinian city that is nestled against Israel’s central region. In the ensuing spat, accusations were made that the defense establishment had tried to implement the plan of its own accord and slip it by the government by hiding its full-scale. Liberman denied the claims, saying the cabinet was presented with all of the details. Netanyahu eventually ruled that it would be debated for a second time by the security cabinet.“The Civil Administration draws its authority from the authority of the Central Command; there is no independent policy,” Eisenkot said referring to the IDF body responsible for administering the West Bank territories. “We are subordinate to the political echelon and act according to the law.”“The Qalqilya plan is implementation of policy and in principle serves the security interests of Israel. “These steps are part of the ability to realize our responsibility to prevent deterioration [in the situation.”At the time Liberman explained that the plan was part of Israel’s “carrot and stick” approach to the Palestinians, in which it would reward areas that show a dearth in terror attacks with material benefits.

Indian PM affirms ‘kinship’ with Israel, where he feels ‘at home’-In Jerusalem, President Reuven Rivlin calls Narendra Modi ‘one the greatest leaders of the world today’-By Raphael Ahren July 5, 2017, 12:08 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke on Wednesday morning of the “kinship” he feels with Israel, hailing the rapidly improving relations between the two countries, and especially the burgeoning trade ties.Modi arrived Tuesday, making him the first-ever head of India’s government to visit the Jewish state.“Israel is a real friend and I have really felt that feeling of kinship. I feel absolutely at home here,” Modi said during a meeting with President Reuven Rivlin in Jerusalem. “Your Excellency, you yourself broke protocol and stepped onto the road [at the President’s Residence] to receive me, and this is a mark of respect to the entire Indian nation comprising 1.25 billion people,” he added.“You have expressed your love and your sentiments for our country. For that, I would especially like to thank you and express my gratitude.”Rivlin heartily welcomed the prime minister to his residence.“We have a lot in common, we are doing a lot in common,” he said, praising Modi for understanding the need of fostering both government-to-government and business-to-government relations. “It’s really a pleasure to have as a guest one of the greatest leaders in the world today. Prime Minister, welcome,” Rivlin concluded.Modi, dressed all in black, recalled Rivlin’s visit to India eight months ago, praising the president for making an effort to visit several cities to get a full picture of the the country. At the time, Rivlin said he wanted to turn Modi’s dictum “Make in India” to “Make with India,” seeking to promote the joint flourishing of both economies.Modi on Wednesday endorsed Rivlin’s idea. “In your introductory words, you used all sorts of phrases used in the world of trade and commerce, such as G2G and B2B et cetera, but in the real world what we see today is ‘I for I,’ and ‘I with I.’ And when I say ‘I for I’ I don’t mean the popular saying, what I mean is India with Israel and India for Israel,” he said.Later on Wednesday, Modi will meet again with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for lunch and attend an event during which several bilateral agreements will be signed.Modi is also scheduled to meet Moshe Holtzberg, the now 12-year-old son of two Chabad emissaries, Rabbi Gavriel and Rivkah Holtzberg, who were killed in a November 2008 terror attack in Mumbai. He is also expected to meet with Sandra Samuel, Moshe’s nanny at the time, who rescued the boy on the day of the attack. In the afternoon, he is set to meet opposition leader Isaac Herzog and members of the Indian community. He will then head to the Israel Museum, where together with Netanyahu he will walk through the Synagogue Route and gaze at a reconstruction of the Kadavumbagam synagogue from the town of Cochin in southern India. On Wednesday evening, at around 8, the two prime ministers are scheduled to address a major rally at the Tel Aviv Fairgrounds, which is expected to draw some 4,000 participants. Before the two leaders make their speeches, the crowd will be entertained by a cultural program, including a performance by popular Bollywood playback singer Sukhwinder Singh.About 12,000 non-Jewish Indian nationals currently live and work in Israel, as well as some 80,000 Israeli Jews with at least one parent of Indian origin. Only 5,000 Jews remain in India today. On Thursday morning, Modi and Netanyahu will take a helicopter ride to Haifa, where they will visit a cemetery where Indian soldiers who fought in World War I are buried. Modi is expected to lay two wreaths — one for Hindu and one for Muslims soldiers who perished “during the liberation of Haifa in 1918,” as Modi put it in a recent Facebook post.On their way back to Tel Aviv, Modi and Netanyahu will visit a water desalination unit before having lunch with Indian and Israeli executives. They will then attend a large innovation conference, during which five Israeli companies and four Indian companies will make presentations. In 1992, when diplomatic ties were established, bilateral trade was at about $200 million. Today, it reaches $5 billion, one-fifth of which is in Israeli defense exports. After a short meeting with Indian students late Thursday afternoon, Modi will head to the airport, where Netanyahu will bid him goodbye during an official ceremony.

Palestinians overwhelmingly oppose Abbas pressure on Gaza-Poll shows majority of Strip’s residents support Hamas-Dahlan deal, but Fatah strongman still has paltry support for presidency-By Dov Lieber July 5, 2017, 6:30 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’s tough measures to force Hamas to cede control of the Gaza Strip are overwhelmingly opposed by Palestinians, according to a poll released Wednesday.Since April, Abbas has cut funds for Israeli-supplied electricity to Gaza by 35 percent, reduced by one-third the salaries of tens of thousands of PA employees in Gaza, and reduced the medical budget for Gaza by a reported 90%. On Tuesday, he forced over 6,000 PA employees Gaza into early retirement.A poll by the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research found that 84% of Palestinians oppose cutting the electricity and 88% oppose reducing the salaries to government employees.Abbas’s government has admitted these measures are aimed at forcing Hamas to give up control in Gaza, which it took over in a violent conflict with the PA-controlling Fatah party in 2007.The poll found that 78% think the strategy will be ineffective in forcing Hamas to cede control. Only 13% said the measures will work. However, 47% said they want Hamas to accept Abbas’s demands if it leads to better conditions in Gaza, while 38% said they wanted Hamas not to cave in.On Tuesday, the spokesperson for the government in Ramalllah, Yusuf al-Mahmoud, said in a statement to the official PA news site Wafa that all the measures “are temporary, and are connected to Hamas abandoning [Palestinian] division.”Mahmoud added that the measures were part of the “national strategy to end the division and implement President Mahmoud Abbas’s vision to dissolve the so-called Administrative Committee” and allow the Palestinian government to assume its responsibilities in the Strip and prepare for general elections.Hamas, a terror group sworn to Israel’s destruction. formed the Administrative Committee in March in order to widen its governance in the Strip.-Majority of Gazans want Hamas-Dahlan deal-The poll also found little support for former Fatah leader Mohammed Dahlan, though some backing for a deal he brokered between Hamas and Egypt to ease conditions in the Strip. In a bid to counter Abbas’s measures and solve the electricity crisis in Gaza, Hamas leaders met in Cairo early in June with Dahlan, Abbas’s main rival in the Fatah party.Dahlan is a former Fatah leader and was considered a strongman in Gaza before being ousted in the 2006 coup that brought Hamas to power in the Strip. He was expelled from the Palestinian territories by Abbas in 2011.Dahlan and Hamas reportedly agreed to establish a new “management committee” of Gaza, which would see the Fatah strongman share control of the Palestinian enclave. The poll found that the Hamas-Dahlan deal is far more popular in Gaza, where 61% support it, than in the West Bank, where only 29% were in favor.A total of 50% said that if the Hamas-Dahlan agreement were implemented, then it would lead to a total separation between the West Bank and Gaza, while 38% said it would not lead to a total separation. While Dahlan’s power inside the Palestinian territories seems to be on the upswing, the poll shows the vast majority of Palestinians do not want him to succeed the 82-year-old Abbas, who is in his eleventh year of what was meant to be a four-year presidential term.Should Abbas not run in the next Palestinian president elections, according to the poll, 35% prefer to see jailed Fatah leader Marwan Barghouti replacing him, while 19% prefer Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, and just 7% would like to see Dahlan take office.Barghouti is serving multiple life-sentences after being found guilty of murder in a Israel civilian court.Majority pessimistic about Trump-led peace talks-The majority of Palestinians believe relations between Israel and the Palestinians will continue to deteriorate amid an effort by United States President Donald Trump to restart peace talks.Following Trump’s visit to Israel and the Palestinian Authority in May, 51% of respondents believe Palestinian-Israeli relations will continue to worsen, 13% think it will improve, and 33% said it will remain the same. These numbers were nearly identical to how respondents viewed the future of Palestinian-American relations. While respondents expressed pessimism about the prospects of peace, the poll showed a meaningful drop in Palestinian support for an armed Intifada.Three months ago, support for violence was 51%, and has now dropped down to 39%. A majority (54%) said they support nonviolent resistance to Israeli policy. The Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research said that support for violence dropped possibly due to the “public perception of the negligible outcome of such attacks, such as knifings and shootings.”The total size of the polling sample was 1,200 adults, interviewed in person in 120 randomly selected locations. The margin of error was set at 3%.

Aboard US aircraft carrier, Netanyahu hails symbol of ‘freedom and victory’-PM helicopters out to USS George H.W. Bush, anchored off Haifa coast, thanks sailors for assisting in ‘clash between good and evil’ against IS-By Times of Israel staff July 3, 2017, 8:10 pm

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday toured the USS George H.W. Bush aircraft carrier as it anchored off the coast of Haifa, and told told US sailors aboard the ship that it is a symbol of “freedom and victory.”“This great aircraft carrier is a floating island of America. It’s a symbol to the world of freedom and victory,” he said in an English speech aboard the world’s largest warship.“The war against ISIS should be seen for what it is: a clash between good and evil. And every sailor on this ship should be immensely proud that you are serving good,” Netanyahu said.“Israel too is a symbol to the world of freedom, victory, and it too helps secure the world against terror. It too is on the front line of the battle between civilization and darkness,” the premier added. “I thank you, the people of Israel thank you, and the free world thanks you.”Netanyahu was accompanied aboard by his wife Sara, as well as US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman, who said vessels such as the USS George H.W. Bush enable the United States “to lead the free world.”Friedman also said that despite its storied history, it was the first time the aircraft carrier had ever hosted a world leader, which, he said, “speaks volumes to the unbreakable bind ties between the United States and the State of Israel.”After landing on the deck of the aircraft carrier in a military helicopter, Netanyahu and his wife were given a tour of the inside of the vessel, including its control tower, where they spoke with crew members and gazed out at the ship’s massive frame and the Mediterranean Sea beyond.Netanyahu also signed the aircraft carrier’s guestbook and was given a coin and hat with the ship’s logo. The Nimitz-class aircraft supercarrier docked outside Haifa port Saturday. It left its homeport of Norfolk, Virginia on January 21 and has been in the region since February as a base for airstrikes against the Islamic State terror group. It operates mainly in the Persian Gulf.Commissioned in 2009, the 333m-long nuclear-powered ship can carry a crew of over 5,000 people, as well as around 90 fighter jets and helicopters. It is considered the world’s largest aircraft carrier and largest warship overall.Due to its size, the ship is unable to enter the Haifa port itself, and dropped anchor four kilometers from the harbor. The crew has been touring Israel and will celebrate American Independence Day on July 4 in the Jewish state. The ship will depart on Wednesday to continue its operations.

LUKEWARM CHURCHES

REVELATION 3:15-19
15 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.
16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I(GOD) will spue (VOMIT) thee out of my mouth.
17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:
18 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.
19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

United Church of Christ condemns Israel for treatment of Palestinian children-Resolution calls on Israeli authorities to prohibit torture and ill-treatment of detained minors-By JTA July 3, 2017, 8:56 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

The United Church of Christ overwhelmingly approved a resolution condemning Israel for its treatment of Palestinian children living in the West Bank, eastern Jerusalem and Gaza. The vote Sunday night by delegates at the 31st General Synod of the United Church of Christ in Baltimore, Maryland, was 79 percent in favor, 13% against and 9% abstaining, according to a statement issued by the church. The resolution calls on Israel to “exercise an absolute prohibition against torture and ill-treatment of detained children.”It also calls on the United States to withhold military assistance from Israel over what the church says are violations of human rights in its treatment of Palestinian children. The resolution says the churches and members must learn about the plight of children in Palestine and the State of Israel. It comes two years after the church voted to divest from companies that profit from Israel’s control of the West Bank. The church’s House of Bishops later defeated the boycott plan as laid out in several resolutions.Among the abuses the resolution cited: Palestinian children being held in Israeli prisons and tried in Israeli military courts; strip searches; hands tied; blindfolds; physical violence; verbal abuse; intimidation; solitary confinement, and being interrogated without a lawyer or parent present. The UCC Palestine/Israel Network, which drafted the resolution, worked with many allies and interfaith partners, the church said in a statement.“The United Church of Christ stands with many ecumenical, interfaith and international partners in adopting this resolution,” the statement said. “The UCC joins other religious and secular organizations already seeking the remedies listed and/or currently deliberating actions toward justice for Palestinian children subjected to the abuses named” in the resolution, the statement said. The church says on its website that it has over 5,000 congregations and nearly 1 million members across the United States.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

The Knesset on Wednesday rejected a bill proposed by an opposition lawmaker aimed at enshrining in law plans to build a non-Orthodox prayer section at the Western Wall in Jerusalem. The move was aimed at countering a government decision to suspend an agreement with liberal Jewish movements to establish the pluralistic prayer plaza.Zionist Union MK Nachman Shai, who co-chairs the Knesset caucus responsible for improving Israel’s ties with Jewish communities abroad, said of the rejection of his bill, “This is nothing is new. The government is choosing a tactic of deferring and suspending in order not to deal with the Western Wall deal.”Shai said his bill, drafted in 2016 but only presented to parliament on Wednesday, was an opportunity to reverse a mistaken decision.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been facing harsh criticism over a pair of decisions last week to renege on a January 2016 commitment to significantly upgrade the pluralistic prayer area at the Western Wall, and to advance a controversial bill critics say grants the ultra-Orthodox a monopoly over conversions to Judaism in Israel.“The government decision to retract the Western Wall agreement is a significant threat to the unity of the Jewish people and to the historic ties between the State of Israel and the Jewish people,” Shai said in a statement Tuesday. The decisions, taken at the behest of Netanyahu’s ultra-Orthodox coalition members, were met with fierce opposition from American-Jewish groups, philanthropists, businessmen and various figures active in the Jewish world, as well as Israeli politicians, who expressed dismay and disappointment. Some have intimated the decisions might impact financial contributions to Israel and warned of eroding support for the Jewish state.“The state, which was founded in order to assure religious and political freedom for the Jewish nation, is destroying with its own hands the most fundamental pillars of the nation-state of the Jewish people and leaving millions of Jews disappointed and in pain,” Shai continued.“Impacting the freedom of religion of millions of Jews is to spit in their faces. Israel knows how to ask, but it doesn’t know how to give.”Netanyahu has insisted that despite the cabinet decision, work will continue to develop what is currently a temporary pluralistic prayer section in the area of Robnison’s Arch, an archaeological site that is an extension of the Western Wall.Non-Orthodox prayer has been permitted at the location for almost two decades, but liberal Jewish movements are demanding that it be upgraded to a permanent installation and that access to the area be improved to put it on a par with the more iconic Western Wall. In addition, they insist on having equal say in administration of the area rather than leaving it under the control of the ultra-Orthodox Western Wall Heritage Foundation, as is its current status.“This [decision] was a stupid, irresponsible, reckless and unnecessary step that should be reversed, and this is the opportunity,” Shai said and called on coalition members to break ranks and support the bill.Presented as a member bill, the proposal requires a preliminary reading in the Knesset before moving on to a committee for fine tuning and going up for further readings. Some coalition members have voiced their opposition to the government’s suspension of the agreed upon plan — notably Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman, who leads the Yisrael Beytenu party ,and National Infrastructure Minister Yuval Steinitz, a member of the Likud party led by Netanyahu.Liberman and Steinitz both voted against the cabinet decision last week to suspend the plan. The conversion bill was frozen on Friday amid the uproar, with Netanyahu announcing that a state-appointed committee would try to reach an “agreed-upon arrangement within our people” over the next six months.Speaking Monday at a Fourth of July celebrations at the residence of US ambassador to Israel David Friedman in Herzliya, Netanyahu said he was committed and “will remain committed to making every Jew feel at home in Israel, including at the Kotel [Western Wall],” which he repeated twice for emphasis.“All we need is patience and perseverance. Patience, perseverance and courage is what the founders of America had in abundance,” he said.On July 30 the High Court of Justice is to hear a suit against the government that was filed by the Reform and Conservative movements together with the Women of the Wall — a feminist prayer group. The government has until July 12 to respond to the petition that demands the Reform and Conservative movements be given their own permanent prayer section rather than the existing temporary one. They demand it either be at Robinson’s Arch or drawn from the current orthodox section. The Western Wall, the holiest place of prayer for Jews, is honored as a remnant of a wall supporting the Second Temple complex, which was destroyed by the Romans in 70 CE. It has unparalleled religious and symbolic importance to the Jewish people.

Kim vows North Korea's nukes are not on negotiation table-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-July 5, 2017

SEOUL, Korea, Republic Of — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un vowed Wednesday his nation will "demonstrate its mettle to the U.S." and never put its weapons programs up for negotiations, a day after successfully testing its first intercontinental ballistic missile. The hard line suggests that North Korea will conduct more weapons tests until it perfects nuclear-armed missiles capable of striking anywhere in the United States. Analysts say Kim's government believes nuclear weapons are key to its survival and could be used to wrest concessions from the United States.Tuesday's ICBM launch, confirmed by U.S. and South Korean officials, was a milestone in North Korea's efforts to develop long-range nuclear-armed missiles. But the North isn't there yet, and many analysts say it needs more tests to perfect such an arsenal.South Korea President Moon Jae-in said Wednesday that the world should look at tougher sanctions against the North and insisted the problem must be solved peacefully.Speaking through an interpreter in Berlin before the Group of 20 summit, Moon called the test "a big threat and provocation" and that there should be consideration of "more intensive possibilities of sanctions."Worry also spread in Washington and at the United Nations, where the United States, Japan and South Korea requested an emergency U.N. Security Council session Wednesday. U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said the U.S. response would include "stronger measures to hold the DPRK accountable," using the acronym for the nation's formal name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. In a show of force, U.S. and South Korean troops fired "deep strike" precision missiles off South Korea's east coast Wednesday. South Korea's military later released previously shot video showing the test-firing of sophisticated South Korean missiles and a computer-generated image depicting a North Korean flag in flames with the backdrop of a major building in Pyongyang, North Korea's capital.North Korean state media described leader Kim as "feasting his eyes" on the ICBM, which was said to be capable of carrying a large nuclear warhead, before its launch."With a broad smile on his face," Kim urged his scientists to "frequently send big and small 'gift packages' to the Yankees," it said, an apparent reference to continuing the stream of nuclear and missile tests Kim has ordered since taking power in late 2011.North Korea was also pleased that its test came as Americans celebrated Independence Day. State media said Kim told "scientists and technicians that the U.S. would be displeased to witness the DPRK's strategic option" on its Independence Day.Kim also said North Korea "would neither put its nukes and ballistic rockets on the table of negotiations in any case nor flinch even an inch from the road of bolstering the nuclear force chosen by itself unless the U.S. hostile policy and nuclear threat to the DPRK are definitely terminated," the Korean Central News Agency reported. The missile launch was a direct rebuke to U.S. President Donald Trump's earlier declaration on Twitter that such a test "won't happen!" and to Moon, who was pushing to improve strained ties with the North.South Korea's Defence Ministry said it was unable to verify whether North Korea has mastered re-entry technology for an ICBM. It said North Korea may now conduct a nuclear test with "boosted explosive power" to show off a warhead to be mounted on a missile. The U.N. Security Council could impose additional sanctions on North Korea, but it's not clear they would stop it from pursuing its nuclear and missile programs since the country is already under multiple rounds of U.N. sanctions for its previous weapon tests."An attempt to curb Kim Jong Un's nuclear and missile ambitions has clearly failed. I think North Korea won't stop its nuclear drive until it feels that it has reached the level that it wants to reach," said Lim Eul Chul, a North Korea expert at South Korea's Kyungnam University. "I don't know when North Korea can reach that level. But I would say it's imminent."There is a consensus among many analysts that Kim's government won't give up its nuclear program because it believes it guarantee its survival from outside threats. But once it possesses functioning ICBMs, it would also have a stronger bargaining position and might propose talks with the United States on reducing those threats, possibly in exchange for freezing but not dismantling some of its nuclear or missile activities, the analysts say.North Korea might seek a downsizing or suspension of joint U.S.-South Korean military exercises that it views as rehearsals for an invasion, or the signing of a peace treaty officially ending the 1950-53 Korean War that could be used as pretext for demanding the withdrawal of the 28,500 American troops currently in South Korea. The war ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty, leaving the Korean Peninsula technically still in a state of war."If the U.S. doesn't accept talks, North Korea might stage provocations or take other dangerous actions to draw the U.S. into negotiations," said analyst Park Hyeong-jung at South Korea's Korea Institute for National Unification. If the United States were to hold talks with a North Korea capable of attacking the entire U.S. mainland with nuclear weapons, those negotiations would be like "arms reduction talks," Lim said.North Korea already has a reliable arsenal of shorter-range missiles and is thought to have a small number of atomic bombs. Some outside civilian experts believe the North has the technology to mount warheads on shorter-range Rodong and Scud missiles that can strike South Korea and Japan, two key U.S. allies where about 80,000 American troops are stationed. But it's unclear if it has mastered the technology needed to build an atomic bomb that can fit on a long-range missile.Regional disarmament talks on North Korea's nuclear program have been stalled since 2009.___Associated Press writer Geir Moulson in Berlin contributed to this report.Foster Klug And Hyung-Jin Kim, The Associated Press.

Pentagon says U.S. defenses can counter threat from any North Korean ICBM-[Reuters]-By Jack Kim and Phil Stewart-YAHOONEWS-July 5, 2017

SEOUL/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. military assured Americans on Wednesday that it was capable of defending the United States against any threat from North Korea's newly developed intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) which Pyongyang says can carry a large nuclear warhead.Taking a major step in its missile program, North Korea on Tuesday test-launched an ICBM, which some experts believe has the range to reach Alaska and the Pacific Northwest of the United States. The test, the first of its kind by North Korea, triggered an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council on Wednesday and a call by Washington for global action.Pentagon spokesman Navy Captain Jeff Davis noted a successful test last month in which a U.S.-based missile interceptor knocked down a simulated incoming North Korean ICBM."So we do have confidence in our ability to defend against the limited threat, the nascent threat that is there," he told reporters. He acknowledged though that previous U.S. missile defense tests had shown "mixed results."North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said the ICBM test completed his country's strategic weapons capability that also includes atomic and hydrogen bombs, the state KCNA news agency said.Pyongyang will not negotiate with the United States to give up those weapons until Washington abandons its hostile policy against the North, KCNA quoted Kim as saying."He, with a broad smile on his face, told officials, scientists and technicians that the U.S. would be displeased ... as it was given a 'package of gifts' on its 'Independence Day'," KCNA said.Kim ordered them to "frequently send big and small 'gift packages' to the Yankees," it added. The missile test is a direct challenge to U.S. President Donald Trump who has been urging China, North Korea's main trading partner and only major ally, to press Pyongyang to give up its nuclear program. The U.N. Security Council, currently chaired by China, will hold an emergency meeting on North Korea at 3 p.m. (1900 GMT), requested by the United States, Japan and South Korea.Diplomats say Beijing has not been fully enforcing existing international sanctions on its neighbor, and has resisted tougher measures, such as an oil embargo, bans on the North Korean airline and guest workers, and measures against Chinese banks and other firms doing business with the North.Trump denounced China's trade with North Korea and cast doubt on whether Beijing is working with Washington to counter the North Korean nuclear threat."Trade between China and North Korea grew almost 40 pct in the first quarter. So much for China working with us - but we had to give it a try!" he wrote on Twitter on Wednesday.Leaders from the Group of 20 nations meeting in Germany this week are due to discuss steps to rein in North Korea's weapons program, which it has pursued in defiance of Security Council sanctions.-DIPLOMATIC PRESSURE-Trump has indicated he is running out of patience with Beijing's efforts to rein in North Korea. His administration has said all options are on the table, military included, but suggested those would be a last resort and that sanctions and diplomatic pressure were its preferred course.A 2015 U.N. document estimated that more than 50,000 North Korean workers were earning currencies overseas for the government, mostly in China and Russia.North Korea appeared to have used a Chinese truck, originally sold for hauling timber but converted for military use, to transport and erect the missile on Tuesday.David Pressman, who was deputy U.S. envoy to the United Nations in the Obama administration, said the North Korean leadership seemed unaffected by Security Council condemnations."The Council can continue to adopt robust resolutions, impose strong coercive measures, and issue stern condemnations, but ... Kim Jong Un doesn’t seem to care and Beijing has not proven itself serious about implementing those measures that are already in place,” Pressman said.Russia and China on Tuesday jointly urged North Korea to suspend its ballistic missile program in return for a moratorium on large-scale military exercises by the United States and South Korea. In Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said the joint statement showed the international community wanted dialogue and not antagonistic voices, as he also urged North Korea not to violate U.N. Security Council resolutions."We hope relevant countries can maintain calm and restraint, and not take steps that might worsen tensions on the peninsula," Geng told a daily briefing.Russia and China, both permanent members of the Security Council, oppose any attempt to resolve the crisis by force or by strangling North Korea economically, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Wednesday."The task of the denuclearization of the entire Korean peninsula cannot and should not be used as a disguise for attempts to change North Korea's regime. This is our common position," he told a news conference. The North's state media said the missile, Hwasong-14, flew 933 km (580 miles), reaching an altitude of 2,802 km (1,741 miles) in its 39 minutes of flight. Some analysts said the flight details suggested the new missile had a range of more than 8,000 km (4,970 miles), which would put parts of the U.S. mainland in range, a major advance in the North's program. The launch was both earlier and "far more successful than expected", said U.S.-based missile expert John Schilling, a contributor to Washington-based North Korea monitoring project 38 North. It would now probably only be a year or two before a North Korean ICBM achieved "minimal operational capability," he added.Experts say a reliable nuclear-tipped ICBM would require a small warhead to fit a long-range missile, technology to protect against intense heat as it re-enters the atmosphere, separate the warhead and guide it to its target.South Korean President Moon Jae-in said "The situation was no longer sufficient to respond to the North's provocation by making statements," according to his office. The U.S. and South Korean militaries conducted a ballistic missile test early on Wednesday in a show of force on the east coast of the Korean peninsula.(Additional reporting by Lesley Wroughton and David Brunnstrom in Washington, Michelle Nichols in New York, Christian Shepherd in Beijing and Polina Nikolskaya in Moscow; Writing by Alistair Bell; Editing by Clarence Fernandez and James Dalgleish)

Parsing hype from reality in North Korea's ICBM claim-[The Canadian Press]-yahoonews-July 4, 2017

SEOUL, Korea, Republic Of — If North Korea's claim Tuesday of its first ICBM test-launch is true, it has barrelled over a red line that the world has long called a tripwire for potential nuclear disaster. As always with North Korea, however, it's hard to tell how wide the gulf is between reality and rhetoric.Analysts, for instance, believe the latest missile may be able to hit Alaska, a marked improvement on past efforts and potentially placing it in the intercontinental ballistic missile category, but far from backing North Korea's claim it can now "strike anywhere on Earth."Skeptics will also ask how North Korea can claim mastery of such a complicated technology after only one test. That said, the message from North Korea seems clear: If not stopped, it is now only a matter of time before one of the most dogged countries on Earth achieves its goal of being able to hit all of the United States. Here is what Tuesday's potentially game-changing development might mean:___WHY IT MIGHT BE AN ICBM-The claim has the air of the inevitable for some North Korea watchers. The country has, with single-minded determination, been devoting its best and brightest, and a huge amount of its tiny financial resources, to this goal. The pace has quickened dramatically under leader Kim Jong Un, who took over in 2011. Since late 2012, North Korea has placed two satellites into orbit with long-range rockets, which outsiders see as clandestine tests of missile technology.Last year, North Korea conducted its fourth and fifth atomic bomb tests and claimed a series of technical missile and atomic breakthroughs. After what North Korea said in March was a ground test of a new type of high-thrust rocket engine, Kim Jong Un was quoted as saying that the "whole world will soon witness what eventful significance the great victory won today carries."Outside analysts say the missile's potential range, if fired at a normal trajectory, could be more than 6,000 kilometres (3,750 miles), which would make it technically an ICBM.___WHY IT MIGHT NOT BE-It is difficult, maybe impossible, for outsiders to understand exactly what happened in the launch."It's something that only North Koreans would know," said Kwon Sejin, a professor at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology in South Korea.Maj. Gen. Cho Han Gyu, director of operations at South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff, told a televised briefing that the missile showed an improved range over an intermediate-range missile North Korea tested on May 14. But he said South Korean and U.S. intelligence authorities are trying to determine if the North had indeed fired an ICBM.Some doubt whether North Korea has mastered the technology needed to build a re-entry vehicle that is crucial for returning a warhead to the atmosphere from space so it could hit its intended target. Or whether North Korea can build a warhead small enough to fit on a long-range missile.Chae Yeon-seok, a professor at South Korea's University of Science and Technology, said radar and satellites can track a missile's flight but not the specifics of the missile's technology. "We cannot verify if a warhead lands in the ocean without any problem," he said.___WHY IT DOESN'T REALLY MATTER-Persistence.North Korea, whose ethos of self-reliance is akin to a national religion, has for decades sought to build weapons that can combat what it perceives as U.S. and South Korean hostility.Nothing has stopped the country's tenacious progress — not sanctions, not threats, not diplomacy.A U.S. and South Korean attack would end North Korea's ruling class, but it would also kill many South Koreans who live close to the world's most heavily armed border.Without the right solution to the standoff, it may only be a matter of time before reality matches North Korea's propaganda, which on Tuesday called the test the "final step toward completing the nation's nuclear military strength."___Associated Press writer Hyung-jin Kim contributed to this report.Foster Klug, The Associated Press.

China rocket failure likely to set back next space missions-[The Canadian Press]-yahoonews-July 4, 2017

BEIJING — The failure of China's Long March 5 rocket deals a rare setback to China's highly successful space program that could delay plans to bring back moon samples and offer rival India a chance to move ahead in the space rankings.Experts say the still unexplained mishap shows that for all its triumphs, China's space program is not immune to the tremendous difficulties and risks involved in working with such cutting-edge technology."China's approach has been slow and prudent, trying to avoid this kind of 'failure,' even though they knew it was going to occur sooner or later," Joan Johnson-Freese, an expert on China's space program at the US Naval War College, wrote in an email.Authorities say the Long March 5 Y2 that took off Sunday in the second launch of a Long March 5 rocket, suffered an abnormality during the flight after what appeared to be a successful liftoff from the Wenchang Space Launch Center in the southern island province of Hainan. The incident is under investigation and the authorities have yet to comment on possible causes, or any knock-on effects on the program as a whole. In a testimony to the high respect China's program now commands, the failure drew widespread commentary in the space community, including from SpaceX founder and chief executive Elon Musk, who tweeted Sunday: "Sorry to hear about China launch failure today. I know how painful that is to the people who designed & built it."Nicknamed "Chubby 5" for its massive, 5-meter (16-foot) girth, the Long March-5 is China's largest and most brawny launch vehicle, capable of carrying 25 tons of payload into low-earth orbit and 14 tons to the more distant geostationary transfer orbit in which a satellite orbits constantly above a fixed position on the earth's surface-That's more than double that of the Long March 7, the backbone of the Chinese launching fleet, making it the linchpin for launch duties requiring such massive heft such as interplanetary travel.First among those is the mission slated for November by the Chang'e 5 probe to land a rover on the moon before returning to Earth with samples — the first time that has been done since 1976. China's most technically demanding mission to date, it had been put off before because of funding and then technology, Johnson-Freese said. While the Long March 5 has suffered other setbacks, the lunar mission is "certainly the most visible one," she said.Other upcoming Chinese missions include the launch next year of the 20-ton core module for China's orbiting Tiangong 2 space station, along with specialized components for the 60-ton station that is due to come on-line in 2022 and other massive payloads in future. The Long March 5 was also due to be the launch vehicle for a Mars rover planned for the mid 2020s.Problems with the Long March 5 may stem from its use of liquefied gases that are less stable than the sort of propellants used in other rockets, said Morris Jones, an Australian space analyst and regular contributor to SpaceDaily.com. Unlike earlier rockets that used highly toxic fuels, the Long March 5 burns a more environmentally friendly and less expensive kerosene-liquid oxygen-liquid hydrogen mix — which is more complex and harder to regulate.Jones called such setbacks typical of the development phase of a new rocket and said additional launches may be required to work out the kinks. Sunday's launch failure will delay the Chang'e 5 mission at least until next year, while there may also be a small delay in launching the space station components, Jones said.Finding a fix "takes a lot of time and effort but there is no other way to produce a reliable rocket," Jones said.Test launched for the first time last year in what had been a towering success, the 57-meter (187-foot) two-stage rocket is just slightly less powerful than the most powerful rocket in service, the U.S.' United Launch Alliance's Delta IV, although SpaceX's Falcon Heavy is designed to carry a payload into low-earth orbit of more than 50 tons.Since the first launch in 1970, China's Long March series of rockets have been a remarkably solid bet, achieving a success rate of around 95 per cent . That's helped facilitate a program that conducted its first crewed space mission in 2003, making China only the third country after Russia and the U.S. to do so, put a pair of space stations into orbit, and landed its Yutu, or "Jade Rabbit" rover on the moon. Administrators suggest a manned landing on the moon may also be in the program's future. Not all has been smooth sailing, however.A Long March 3B rocket launched June 18 launch placed its communications satellite in a lower-than planned for orbit. Though the satellite is climbing into its proper altitude on its own, the effort will reduce its useful lifespan in space. A least two similar incidents reportedly occurred last year. With two mishaps coming so close together, Chinese space officials may decide to take a pause to re-evaluate manufacturing quality or other aspects of the program, said Stephen Clark of Spaceflight Now. That may include launching another Long March 5 test flight before attempting the Chang'e 5 mission, Clark said. Both Clark and Johnson-Freese said they hope the failure doesn't deter Chinese officials in their pursuit of greater transparency and international participation in the country's space program.Yet, rivals, primarily India, may see the setback as an opportunity to steal a march on China, whose geostrategic influence has benefited significantly from its role as a technology leader in space, said Johnson-Freese.India's Mars Orbiter Mission, called Mangalyaan, is already orbiting the red planet, years before China is ready to launch such a mission, and it won acclaim and a place in the record books earlier this year by placing 104 nano satellites in orbit from a single rocket."The failure of the Long March 5 may provide a window of opportunity for India," said Johnson-Freese.___This story has been corrected to show analyst Morris Jones said that the liquefied gas used in the new rocket is less stable than the "sort of" propellants used in other rockets, instead of "solid" propellants.Christopher Bodeen, The Associated Press.

BRUSSELS, Today, 09:28-Catalonia's parliament would declare independence "within two days" if separatists win a referendum on the issue on 1 October. The pledge was made in a draft bill presented on Tuesday (4 July) by the separatist parties that form the ruling coalition in Barcelona. The so-called referendum of self-determination law also says that independence will be declared if there are "more positive votes than negative votes".That means that independence would be declared even if the majority is obtained only with a minority of registered voters participating in the referendum. The question put to voters will be: "Do you want Catalonia to become an independent state in the form of a Republic?"If the Yes side wins, the Catalan parliament would declare independence in an ordinary session within two days of the electoral commission officially declaring the results. The bill, which will be formally tabled and discussed in the Catalan parliament in August, is likely to put the Catalan government on a collision course with Spanish authorities. The Spanish Constitutional Court has stated that a referendum on independence would be illegal and the Spanish government has said it will use "all means" to stop it.In a clear reference to Spanish law, the bill presented on Tuesday says it will establish an "exceptional legal regime," which will "prevail on all norms that could be in conflict" with the "inalienable sovereign right of the Catalan people"."The state will need only 24 hours to appeal [against the referendum] and obtain its stoppage," government vice-president Soraya Saenz de Santamaria said on Tuesday."We will vote as usual," the president of the Catalan government, Carles Puigdemont, replied. In a speech in Barcelona's National Theatre of Catalonia, Puigdemont said that "no power in the Spanish state" could stop the vote or "act against the people".Uncertainties, however, remain over the ability of Catalan authorities to organise the vote, in particular for providing ballot boxes. In an interview with EUobserver and other media last week, Puigdemont said it was possible that Spanish authorities try to suspend him from office, as well as other officials and civil servants, when he officially calls the vote.He said that he was "confident that the violent option is not on the table," but the Spanish government could prevent polling stations from opening. On Monday, Puigdemont fired his business minister, Jordi Baiget, after he said that the Spanish state was "so strong that we probably won’t be able to hold the referendum."The pledge to declare independence immediately after a Yes vote doesn't mean, however, that Catalonia will immediately be an independent state."We know that there will be a transitional period," Puigdemont said in his interview last week.He explained that he would try to start negotiations with the Spanish government and the EU, in order to find an agreement on "how Catalonia can become a fully independent state".Despite the pledge to declare independence whatever the number of voters and of Yes votes, Catalan politicians have recognised that turnout and the size of the majority for independence would be crucial in the show of strength with Madrid and EU capitals. If the No to independence wins, the referendum bill stipulates that regional elections will be called "immediately".

Poland awaits Trump security promise By Andrew Rettman-july 5,17-euobserver

BRUSSELS, Today, 18:52-Poland is angling for US security pledges when Donald Trump visits Warsaw and before he meets Russian leader Vladimir Putin.“These aren’t some general talks about global security, we’ll speak about very concrete issues,” Polish president Andrzej Duda, who invited Trump, told Polish news agency PAP on Wednesday (5 July). Those included the future of US troops in Poland, an explicit pledge of Nato solidarity, installation of US anti-missile systems, and energy security, he said.“I’m very happy that US army soldiers are with us [in Poland]. I hope there will be more”, he added.“It’s possible that he [Trump] will also express himself expressis verbis on this issue [Nato solidarity],” Duda said.Trump and his first lady land in Warsaw at 10PM local time on Wednesday. He will talk to Duda for 25 minutes on Thursday morning. He will then join a mini-summit of 12 leaders from nearby states and give a speech at 1PM at a square in the Polish capital. He will go at 3PM to the G20 summit in Germany, where he is to meet Russian president Vladimir Putin on Friday for the first time.-US forces-The US has sent 900 soldiers and pre-positioned tanks in Poland as part of Nato efforts to deter Russian aggression.“We are hoping that their presence will be permanent … because this constitutes a security guarantee,” Duda’s spokesman, Krzysztof Lapinski, told Polish broadcaster TVN24 on Wednesday.Trump declined to explicitly pledge allegiance to Nato joint defence at a summit in May.His overt and alleged Russia-friendliness has also raised concern he might let Putin off the hook on invading Ukraine. But Lapinski said: “Trump himself, since he took office, has not given any indications that he was contemplating a deal with Russia over our heads.”General MacMaster, Trump’s security advisor, said last week Trump wanted “a more constructive relationship” with Putin. But he said Trump’s second objective was “to deter Russia, right? Because the worse thing - nobody wants a major power war, right?”.MacMaster said Trump would give a “major” speech on “the future of our transatlantic alliance” at the Krasinski Square in Warsaw. The square was the epicentre of the Warsaw Uprising against Nazi occupation in 1944.Poles also associate the events with the Soviet Army’s betrayal of Polish resistance fighters.-Putin meeting-Looking to Friday, the Kremlin said Putin would try to make Trump see Ukraine his way.“This will be a good opportunity to reiterate Russia’s position that ... it is necessary to implement the Minsk deal and take steps to halt provocations that have been carried out by Ukraine’s armed forces,” Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said on Wednesday. The Minsk agreement is an EU-brokered deal which says “foreign forces”, meaning Russian forces, must leave Ukraine. But Russia denies having forces in Ukraine, except for Crimea, which it annexed in 2014.Trump’s visit to Poland prompted the ruling Law and Justice party to claim a special status.“We’re the leader of central Europe and that’s why president Trump is coming”, Duda said. The Law and Justice party chief, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, said in a speech last week that Trump had made Poland the “envy” of Europe. The bombastic talk came amid EU criticism of Kaczynski’s crackdown on the independence of Polish courts and press. It also came amid EU concern on US and Polish nationalism and populism. The Law and Justice party planned to bus in hundreds of supporters for Trump’s speech on Thursday, Gazeta Wyborcza, a Polish newspaper, reported. But a majority of Poles would see eye-to-eye with his right-wing views on Islam.A poll by IBRiS for Polityka, a Polish weekly, out on Wednesday said 52.1 percent of Poles would rather leave the EU than be forced to take in refugees from Muslim states.

Germany expects Russian leaking to start in 'weeks' By Andrew Rettman-july 5,17-euobserver

BRUSSELS, Today, 09:26-Germany expects Russia to start publishing compromising material on German MPs in the summer in order to destabilise elections in September. Its interior minister, Thomas de Maiziere, and spy chief, Hans-Georg Maassen, issued the warning in Berlin on Tuesday (4 July) after unveiling a yearly intelligence report.De Maiziere said the material “could be published in the coming weeks,” the Reuters news agency reported.Maassen said Russia’s intention was “to damage trust in and the functioning of our democracy so our government should have domestic political difficulties and not be as free to act in its foreign policy as it is today.”A hacker group, called APT28, said by US intelligence to be a front for Russian spies, stole 16 gigabytes of data from over 5,600 computers in the German parliament in 2015.It broke into the accounts of 16 MPs and some in chancellor Angela Merkel’s office.Recalling Russia’s actions in the US and French elections, De Maiziere said he expected "a classic disinformation campaign with lies and half truths intended to shape opinions" that would be spread by online "bots".Mainstream parties are polling miles ahead of pro-Kremlin ones, such as The Left party and the far-right Alternative for Germany party. The German voting system is also hard to hack. People vote on paper ballots and the Federal Statistics Office counts data on an encrypted, offline network. But Germany hosts three pro-Kremlin media - RT Deutsch, Sputnik Deutsch, and NewsFront Deutsch. The 2.5 million Russian people living in Germany also follow Russian state media, which has been broadcasting anti-Merkel propaganda for years.Maassen, the intelligence chief, said on Tuesday: “It [Russia’s campaign] may not be aimed at strengthening one party or another, or ensuring that one or another person is elected to run the government, but that the trust in the functioning of our democracy is damaged.”-Turkey, China-The yearly intelligence assessment by Germany’s domestic agency, the BfV, which handles counter-espionage, said Russia, Turkey, and China were its main adversaries.“It is assumed that Russian state agencies are trying to influence parties, politicians and public opinion, with a particular eye to the 2017 parliamentary election,” it said.It said “since 2014, propaganda and disinformation activities to promote Russian interests and defame the Federal Government’s policy have increased”.“Important propaganda and disinformation tools include social networks, the microblogging service Twitter, government-funded and private institutes and Russian state … TV, radio, and online channels”, it said.It said Turkey was spying on Turkish expats in Germany and China was trying to recruit agents on Facebook for economic espionage."The consequences for our country range from weakened negotiating positions to high material costs and economic damage all the way to impairment of national sovereignty," the BfV report said.-Terrorist threat-Russia’s propaganda campaign has portrayed Merkel’s open-door policy toward refugees as a security threat to German people. It is also suspected of cultivating links with neo-Nazi thugs who could cause trouble in the run-up to the vote.Maassen said the threat of further terrorist incidents, which could be exploited by Russia for political gain, remained high.“Further attacks by single persons or terror commando groups must be expected,” he said. The BfV report said there were some 24,000 “potential” Islamist extremists living in Germany compared to 8,350 in 2015.De Maiziere said 680 of them posed a terrorist threat. The BfV report added that there were 12,100 far-right radicals and 28,500 far-left extremists living in the country.

Muslim prayers at Quebec zoo upset some people-[The Canadian Press]-yahoonews-Jul 5, 2017, 8:25 AM

HEMMINGFORD, Que. — A Quebec zoo is defending itself after receiving criticism for allowing a group of Muslims to pray on its premises.Parc Safari says it has been the subject of hateful and racist comments since a YouTube video was posted on Sunday showing the prayers.A woman can be heard shouting, "we are too conciliatory," while another says she is against prayers in public spaces.Zoo management says the Muslims respected all the guidelines and would have been expelled had they not.Parc Safari officials say the zoo is a multicultural location. It is in Hemmingford, about 70 kilometres south of Montreal."Safari Park is sorry that freedom of religion may offend people," the zoo said in a statement. "In any case, this was not the objective."Since last Sunday, Safari Park has been a victim of hate and racist comments. Safari Park is a place where everyone is welcome. A zoological institution is by definition a multicultural place where small and large can discover the wonderful diversity of nature and animals and thus develop affection and respect for this diversity, these differences, and their intrinsic beauty."We repeat: Safari Park is a place for everyone, regardless of nationality, religion, colour, culture or sexual orientation."The Canadian Press.

Iraqi commander says 300 IS fighters holed up in Mosul-[The Canadian Press]-yahoonews-July 5, 2017

MOSUL, Iraq — Some 300 Islamic State fighters remain in the small patch of territory still controlled by the group in Mosul's Old City, a senior Iraqi commander said Wednesday.Lt. Gen. Sami al-Aridi of Iraq's special forces told The Associated Press that the militants' hold on Mosul has shrunk to a 500 square meter (600 sq. yard) area. A large number of civilians are believed to be trapped in the IS-run enclave, with around 1,500 fleeing with every 100-meter (yard) advance by Iraqi forces.Iraqi forces moved to besiege the Old City before launching their attack in order to prevent IS fighters from fleeing to neighbouring Syria, but al-Aridi said hundreds of militants still managed to escape from the Old City alone."They just shave their beards and walk out," al-Aridi said. "Just yesterday we captured two among a group of women and children."Late Tuesday, Iraq's Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi congratulated the armed forces on a "big victory" in Mosul, despite ongoing clashes. The prime minister declared an end to the extremist group's self-styled Islamic caliphate in June.IS captured Mosul in a matter of days when it swept across northern and central Iraq in the summer of 2014. Iraqi forces backed by a U.S.-led coalition launched a major operation to retake the city in October. The Associated Press.

U.S. strikes al Shabaab militants in Somalia: Pentagon-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-July 5, 2017

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. military carried out a strike in Somalia against the al-Qaeda-linked al Shabaab militant group on July 4, the U.S. military said on Wednesday, the second attack on the group in the last few days. The strike occurred about 300 miles (480 km) southwest of the Somali capital Mogadishu, the Pentagon said. It did not disclose additional information such as the number of fighters killed. On Monday, the U.S. military said it carried out an air strike against al Shabaab on July 2."We will continue to assess the results of the operation and will provide additional information as appropriate," the U.S. military's Africa Command said in a statement."Specific details about the units involved and assets used will not be released in order to ensure operational security."Since being pushed out of the capital Mogadishu in 2011, al Shabaab has lost control of most of Somalia's cities and towns. But it retains a strong presence in swathes of the south and center and carries out major gun and bomb attacks. The group aims to topple Somalia's government, drive out African Union peacekeeping troops and impose its own harsh interpretation of Islamic law.(Reporting by Phil Stewart; Editing by James Dalgleish and Grant McCool)

Ukraine says it foiled 2nd cyberattack after police raid-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-July 5, 2017

KIEV, Ukraine — Ukraine has dodged a second cyberattack, officials said Wednesday, suggesting that the digital campaign which paralyzed computers across the country and around the world is still ongoing.Ukraine is still trying to find its feet after scores or even hundreds of businesses and government agencies were hit by an explosion of data-scrambling software on June 27. In a Facebook post , Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said there was a second stage to that attack, timed to hit its peak at 4 p.m. in Ukraine on July 4.Avakov said the second strike — like the first one — originated from servers at the Ukrainian tax software company M.E. Doc, which sheds a little more light on Tuesday's heavily armed raid on M.E. Doc's office and the seizure of its servers. Video released Wednesday showed men in camouflage carrying assault-style weapons storming the company's modest offices in Kyiv as office workers calmly watched them. Police spokeswoman Yulia Kvitko said there were no arrests."We prevented the initiation of the second wave of viruses," Yaroslav Trakalo, another police spokesman, said in the video released Wednesday. He said investigators have already found "evidence of Russian presence on these servers," although he did not elaborate.Ukraine has blamed the Kremlin for the attacked that sowed chaos. Kremlin officials routinely deny claims of electronic interference in Ukraine and elsewhere. The raid on M.E. Doc caps a week of increasingly implausible claims from the company that it was not at the heart of the outbreak. On Wednesday the firm reversed itself, acknowledging that it had been broken into and used by hackers to seed the malware epidemic. It's not clear what the thrust or scope of the second cyberattack in Ukraine was, but M.E. Doc is widely used across Ukraine, making it a tempting springboard for hackers. An executive at the company was quoted by Interfax-Ukraine as saying the software was installed on 1 million machines across the country. How many of those machines have been infected is an open question. The June 27 attack initially seemed to be a particularly aggressive form of ransomware, but many analysts who picked it apart later said it appeared to be a thinly disguised attempt to destroy data and sow chaos. Some said the malware epidemic was likely state-backed, and Ukrainian officials have squarely put the blame on the Kremlin. In the meantime, the online wallet carrying roughly $10,000 worth of digital currency extorted by the cyber attackers was emptied shortly around the time of the July 4 raid, according to Bitcoin's public ledger. Information security experts say some of the money appears to have been used to purchase space on a darknet text storage site, where a statement demanding 100,000 bitcoin, or roughly $2.6 million, in exchange for unscrambling all the affected files materialized shortly thereafter. It's impossible to determine whether the offer is serious or just a distraction and The Associated Press was unable to immediately reach the hackers for comment.Ukrainian officials have not offered a global estimate of the amount of damage inflicted by the June 27 attack. But in an interview Tuesday with the Associated Press, Infrastructure Minister Volodymyr Omelyan said the damage at his department alone ran into millions of dollars.Raphael Satter, The Associated Press.

Guns, bomb-making material taken from 'AK-47' suspect's home-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-July 5, 2017

HELENA, Mont. — FBI agents seized bomb-making materials, seven guns and ammunition from the Montana home of a man they suspect of carrying out bank robberies in five states, according to an inventory list filed with a federal court. The property seized from Richard Gathercole's home in Roundup shows that agents also found sheriff's badges and patches, a sheriff's vest, an ammunition vest, a military style helmet, an organic chemistry book and material to make identification badges.Authorities believe Gathercole, 39, is the man they call "the AK-47 bandit" who held up at least six banks since 2012 in California, Washington, Idaho, Nebraska and Iowa. The suspect typically wore a mask with only his nose and eyes showing and carried an AK-47 rifle with a drum magazine.Gathercole is being held in Lexington, Nebraska, where he is accused of stealing a truck and guns and firing on a Kansas state trooper who was trying to pull him over for a traffic stop last month. The inventory list filed with U.S. District Court in Billings on June 27 listed 39 seized items, including computers, books and other documents. It does not include details of the improvised-explosive device material that was found other than "IED components."The Musselshell County Sheriff's Office in Montana previously described finding "numerous" homemade bombs in his home. The search warrant filed with the court described one explosive device used in a 2015 bank robbery in Iowa as containing powder, metal pieces and a fuse.Gathercole is scheduled to appear in court in Nebraska on Thursday on both a fugitive from justice charge related to the attempted shooting of the Kansas trooper and on the theft charges. His public defender, Corey Burns, said Wednesday that the preliminary hearing will only determine whether there is probable cause to file those charges, and that Gathercole will not enter a plea.He declined to discuss Gathercole any further without his client's permission, other than to say, "He is doing well."Federal charges related to the bank robberies have not been filed. Last week, San Bernardino County, California, prosecutors said they planned to charge Gathercole with attempted murder of a peace officer for the shooting of a Chino police officer during a 2012 bank robbery.FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller did not have an immediate comment.Matt Volz, The Associated Press.

Exclusive: Kurdish YPG militia expects conflict with Turkey in northern Syria-[Reuters]-By Rodi Said and Dominic Evans-YAHOONEWS-July 5, 2017

QAMISHLI, Syria/ANKARA (Reuters) - The head of the Syrian Kurdish YPG militia said on Wednesday that Turkish military deployments near Kurdish-held areas of northwestern Syria amounted to a "declaration of war" which could trigger clashes within days.Turkey's Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus retorted that his country was not declaring war but that its forces would respond to any hostile move by the YPG, which he described as a small-scale army formed by the United States. The mounting tensions between two U.S. allies in northwestern Syria risk opening yet another front in the multi-sided conflict, in which outside powers are playing ever greater roles. They could also distract the YPG from the U.S.-backed campaign to capture Islamic State's stronghold of Raqqa, some 200 km (125 miles) away. The YPG is spearheading that campaign.Asked by Reuters whether he expected a conflict with Turkey in northern Syria, where the two sides have exchanged artillery fire in recent days, YPG Commander Sipan Hemo accused Turkey of preparing for a major military campaign in the Aleppo and Afrin area."These (Turkish) preparations have reached level of a declaration of war and could lead to the outbreak of actual clashes in the coming days," he said in emailed comments. "We will not stand idly by against this potential aggression."Turkey's policy in northern Syria has been focused on containing the growing sway of Kurdish groups that have established autonomous regions since Syria's war began in 2011.Ankara says the YPG represents a security threat, seeing it as an extension of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which has been fighting an insurgency against the Turkish state for decades.Turkish forces deployed in northern Syria last year in support of Ankara-backed Free Syrian Army rebel groups in an operation that forced Islamic State away from the border and at the same time drove a wedge between YPG-held areas. In recent weeks, Turkey has sent reinforcements into the area north of Aleppo, according to Turkey-backed rebel groups who have established control over a section of the Turkish-Syrian frontier with Ankara's support."This is not a declaration of war. We are making preparations against potential threats," Kurtulmus told Reuters in an interview. "Their (YPG) primary goal is a threat to Turkey, and if Turkey sees a YPG movement in northern Syria that is a threat to it, it will retaliate in kind."Hemo was last week cited as saying the YPG had a plan to capture that area between the towns of Azaz and Jarablus. Asked about that remark, he described the Turkish intervention as "occupation" of Syrian land, and said the YPG had never "threatened Turkey or its security".-LONG-TERM PLANS-Turkey, a NATO member, has been incensed by the U.S. decision to ally with the YPG. Washington took the decision to arm the group before the final assault on Raqqa began in June. The YPG is fighting under the banner of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which includes Arab fighters. In separate comments to the Saudi-owned Asharq al-Awsat newspaper published on Wednesday, Hemo said the United States had established seven military bases in areas of northern Syria controlled by the YPG or SDF, including a major airbase near Kobani, a town at the border with Turkey.Citing operational security, the coalition said it did not confirm or deny information about "specific capabilities, force numbers, locations or movement of forces in Iraq and Syria".Hemo indicated the YPG would keep fighting Islamic State even after its defeat in Raqqa, saying it was committed with "the international coalition to cleansing Syria of terrorism and establishing a political system capable of achieving real democratic transformation".Turkish defense ministry sources said last month the United States had pledged that weapons provided to the YPG would be taken back once Islamic State was defeated. Turkey says that is not credible."There has never been an incident where a group in the Middle East has been armed, and they returned the weapons," Kurtulmus said. The United States "have formed more than a terrorist organization there, they formed a small-scale army."He also warned the YPG not to try to drive out Arab or Turkmen residents from the town of Tel Rifaat, which is close to Afrin and controlled by YPG and Arab allies in the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces.U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis has left open the possibility of longer-term assistance to the YPG, saying the U.S. may need to supply them with weapons and equipment even after the capture of Raqqa.Hemo said U.S. officials had denied any intention to take away the YPG's weapons and that the YPG would be needing more support due to its longer-term plans to tackle the remnants of Islamic State.(Additional reporting by Orhan Coskun and Ercan Gurses; writing by Tom Perry; editing by; Philippa Fletcher)

NYC officer shot to death in command post RV; gunman killed-[The Canadian Press]-yahoonews-July 5, 2017

NEW YORK — A New York City police officer was shot to death early Wednesday, ambushed inside a mobile command post by an ex-convict who had ranted online about his treatment in prison and about officers getting away with killing people, authorities said. The gunman was killed by police about a block away.Miosotis Familia, a 12-year member of the force, was writing in her notebook in the front seat of the RV-like vehicle when the killer strode up to it in a Bronx neighbourhood around 12:30 a.m. and fired one round through the passenger-side window, striking her in the head, authorities said."PO Miosotis Familia has been assassinated in an unprovoked attack on cops assigned to keep NYers safe," Police Commissioner James O'Neill tweeted. Her partner radioed frantically for help, and police caught up to 34-year-old Alexander Bonds, who was gunned down after pulling a revolver, police said.Witness Jay Marzelli told the Daily News that he was getting a sandwich at a bodega and thought the shots were Fourth of July fireworks at first."All of a sudden there was all this running and stuff going on, and I look out, probably 40, 50, 60 cops screaming, 'Call a paramedic, clear the block!'" he said. "It looked like there was a riot going on, and two seconds later I hear gunshots, 'Bam, bam.'"Familia, 48, had been stationed inside the mobile command post, which had been set up in the high-crime neighbourhood since March after a triple shooting and was manned around the clock.Bonds was sentenced to six years in Attica prison in an armed robbery case out of Syracuse and had been paroled in 2013. He had other prior arrests, including one in 2001, when as a teenager he was accused of attacking an officer with brass knuckles. In a video posted on Facebook in September, the Bronx man ranted about the treatment of people by officers and talked about how hard life was behind bars."Don't think every brother, cousin, uncle you got that get killed in jail is because of a Blood or Crip or Latin King killing them. Nah, police be killing them and saying that an inmate killed them," he said in the video. At another point, he said into the camera: "I'm not playing, Mr. Officer. I don't care about 100 police watching this." And: "It's time for people to wisen up."Aside from the police rant, Bonds' Facebook page mostly consisted of inspirational quotes and quizzes.Police said they were trying to identify the motive for the shooting. While tensions have been running high between police and black people around the country, there was little or no immediate indication the killing had a racial dimension. Bonds was black; Familia was black and Hispanic, her family hailing from the Dominican Republic. She apparently had no previous contact with Bonds. The shooting recalled the 2014 ambush killings of two New York City officers who were shot in their cruiser by a man who approached the passenger window. The gunman, 28-year-old Ismaaiyl Brinsley, then killed himself. Brinsley had announced online in the moments before the attack that he was going to shoot two "pigs" in retaliation for the police chokehold death of Eric Garner. In the latest shooting, Bonds was caught on video leaving a convenience store, then moving tightly along the wall, pulling his hoodie over his head and walking purposefully toward the police vehicle. The video didn't capture the shooting itself but showed him running away with a gun in his hand, police said.Familia, a mother of three, including a set of twins, worked the midnight shift in the Bronx."She was on duty serving this city, protecting people, doing what she believed in and doing the job she loved," Mayor Bill de Blasio said at the hospital before Familia died. "And after this shocking and sudden attack, her fellow officers came to her aid immediately."Officers stood at attention and saluted as an ambulance carrying her body left the hospital.___This story has been corrected to show that Bonds said people should "wisen up," not "rise up."___Associated Press writers Jennifer Peltz, Tom Hays and Karen Matthews in New York contributed to this report.Colleen Long, The Associated Press.

Top general apologizes for incident at Indigenous ceremony on Canada Day-[The Canadian Press]-yahoonews-July 5, 2017

HALIFAX — Canada's top general has condemned the actions of a group of Armed Forces members who disrupted a spiritual event on Canada Day marking the suffering of Indigenous Peoples at a statue of Halifax's controversial founder, Edward Cornwallis.Gen. Jonathan Vance, chief of the defence staff, called the incident "deplorable" and said the men will be removed from training and duties while the incident is investigated. On Saturday, the group of men were clad in black polo shirts with yellow piping  — one of them carrying a Red Ensign Flag —  as they approached singing "God Save the Queen," one Mi’kmaq organizer said. The Canadian Red Ensign, which bears the Union Jack in the corner, was the national flag until it was replaced by the Maple Leaf design in 1965.The men said they were members of the Proud Boys, a self-declared group of "Western Chauvinists."Cornwallis, as governor of Nova Scotia, founded Halifax in 1749, and soon after issued a bounty on Mi’kmaq scalps in response to an attack on colonists. His legacy has become controversial, with debate recently over the use of his name on buildings, street signs and parks. In a statement Tuesday night, Vance was the latest official to offer an apology to the Indigenous community, adding that the actions of the men "certainly do not represent the broader group of proud women and men who serve our country."“I detest any action by a Canadian Armed Forces member that is intended to show disrespect towards the very people and cultures we value in Canada," Vance said. "We are the nation's protectors, and any member of the Canadian Armed Forces who is not prepared to be the defender we need them to be will face severe consequences, including release from the Forces."Earlier Tuesday, Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan said there will be consequences for military personnel who "express intolerance while in — or out — of uniform."Sajjan also apologized to Halifax’s Mi’kmaq community and Chief Grizzly Mamma, who took part in the ceremony, "for the pain this incident has caused.""I know my words cannot undo the disrespect that was shown to you and your community. I know our government has much more work to do with respect to reconciliation with Indigenous peoples," he said in a statement."But I want to give you my personal assurance that this kind of behaviour will not be tolerated within the ranks of the Canadian Armed Forces and the Department of National Defence."The commander of Canada's East Coast Navy confirmed that six members of the military, including members of the Royal Canadian Navy, the Canadian army and a member of a cadet organization, were involved."I told the young people they had crossed a line where their personal beliefs, their personal ideology — which they are allowed to have — got into the public domain," Rear Admiral John Newton, commander of Maritime Forces Atlantic, told reporters at a news conference in Halifax."Their personal beliefs, whether religious, political or white supremacy, whatever the Proud Boys represent, it's not a shared value of the Canadian Armed Forces."Newton said he received complaints from Aboriginal friends, and there was a "considerable outcry" from serving members of the Forces."I apologize for the actions of my young sailors, and ... I hope that those young people will find a moment to make their own apologies in due course."A video of the incident at the Cornwallis statue shows five men interacting with spectators at the ceremony."This is a British colony," one of the men says in the video. "You're recognizing the heritage and so are we."In the video, one of the spectators appears to hold an upside-down Canadian flag, which someone implies has been marked with the word "decolonize."Asked if the group is associated with an organization, one of the men in the video says, "The Proud Boys, Maritime chapter."The Proud Boys Canadian Chapters Facebook page says they are "a fraternal organization of Western Chauvinists who will no longer apologize for creating the modern world" and do not discriminate on the basis of race or sexuality.A witness to the interaction says the men kept their voices down as the ceremony continued and left after about 10 minutes.A person close to one of the individuals involved in the incident, who agreed to speak to The Canadian Press on the condition that their identity not be revealed, said the men were on a pub crawl on Saturday. One was carrying the old Red Ensign to celebrate Canada's 150th anniversary when they passed by the Cornwallis statue and noticed an upside-down Canadian flag with black markings, the person said. The men did not intend to provoke people at the gathering, the person said, but were trying to peacefully defend the flag they fight for.The person said the man they know doesn't hold hateful views and is no longer associated with The Proud Boys. The man was acting out of character due to a combination of youth and intoxication, they said, and he deeply regrets the incident, but believes the army is taking appropriate action.Rebecca Moore, who participated in Saturday's ceremony, said in an interview Monday that the military shouldn't tolerate the men's behaviour, adding that it was far from an isolated incident."It's military men coming and disturbing Indigenous women doing a ceremony," said Moore. "That is like a story since the beginning of them landing here."The military has to say, 'They don't represent us.'"— With files from Michael MacDonald-Adina Bresge, The Canadian Press.
