Liberman: Doesn't take genius to see High Court will torpedo law-Final votes on outpost bill delayed as opposition seeks changes-Committee set to approve text of controversial legislation Tuesday; final plenum votes could turn into week-long marathon-By Marissa Newman and Raoul Wootliff January 30, 2017, 6:24 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

The final committee and plenary votes on controversial legislation that would legalize some 4,000 housing units in the West Bank built on privately owned Palestinian land were postponed on Monday, with the opposition seeking seven full days of debates before the votes are held. The legislation was originally scheduled to pass into law on Monday evening. But faced with hundreds of proposed revisions by the opposition, the special committee created to finalize the legislation was forced to delay its votes on the revisions until Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. Once approved by the committee, the legislation will be brought to the plenary for readings. The spokesperson for coalition chairman David Bitan confirmed that the plenum votes were also subsequently pushed off until Tuesday, at the very least. The spokesperson told The Times of Israel the second and third readings in the plenum may not take place on Tuesday and could see further delays.A spokesperson for Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein said the opposition was seeking seven full days of debates before the final votes. The Knesset legal adviser was considering the request.Jewish Home MK Betzalel Smotrich wrote on Twitter that the marathon debates will likely begin Tuesday, continue overnight, resume on Wednesday afternoon and extend through the night to Thursday. The final votes on the Regulation Bill, he projected, would take place next Monday. At the very least, the debate before the final vote was expected to take at least 10 hours with over 500 objections having been presented by the opposition.Condemned by the Barack Obama administration, the European Union, the United Nations and Israel’s attorney general, the so-called Regulation Law is being hailed by the settler movement as a turning point in the 50-year settlement project. Once passed, supporters say, the era of evacuating Jewish settlements will be over, though the measure will not cover the doomed Amona outpost, slated for evacuation by early next month. The legislation had been taken off the Knesset slate late last year, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly waited for Obama to leave office. On Sunday, he announced it would come back for a vote this week. The final draft of the bill outlines the procedures for legalizing unauthorized construction on private land and compensating the Palestinian landowners. It also immediately freezes administrative proceedings in 16 West Bank settlements for a period of 12 months. As the text stands, it does not apply to buildings that have received final demolition orders from Israeli courts, effectively excluding the outpost of Amona, which is set to be razed by next Wednesday. The proposed Regulation Bill stipulates that settlement construction in the West Bank that had been carried out in good faith, without knowledge that the land was privately owned, would be recognized by the government, provided the settlers show some kind of state support in establishing themselves at the site — which in some cases could be as minimal as having access to public infrastructure.Under the bill, the government will be able to appropriate land for its own use if the owners are not known. If the owners are known, they will be eligible for either yearly damages amounting to 125 percent of the value of leasing the land, a larger financial package valued at 20 years’ worth of leasing the plots, or alternate plots.-A ‘very serious danger’ to Israel-Speaking at the weekly Zionist Union faction meeting Monday, opposition leader Isaac Herzog said the bill poses a “very serious danger” to the State of Israel. “This law creates de facto annexation, contrary to all of Israel’s international obligations. It is due to this law that the UN Security Council adopted its resolution against the settlements,” he said.Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman, who has spoken out publicly against the outpost legalization bill, told his Yisrael Beytenu party that he would support it in its final votes. But he said you “don’t have to be a genius” to see that the High Court of Justice will torpedo the law. “The chance of it being rejected by the High Court is 100%.”Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit has warned that the Regulation Bill breaches both local and international law, and indicated that the High Court was likely to strike it down. Some officials, including Netanyahu himself, have also warned that the law could see Israeli officials brought before the International Criminal Court in The Hague.First put forward by the Jewish Home party, the original proposal was intended to overturn a High Court of Justice verdict forbidding the expropriation of the privately owned Palestinian land on which Amona sits. The clause that would have circumvented that court ruling, however, was removed from the bill following coalition infighting. While coalition sources on Sunday said Netanyahu had instructed his chief of staff Yoav Horowitz to explore the possibility of including Amona in the final bill, the special committee created to oversee the legislation was set to finalize the text Tuesday without mention of the outpost. In a deal struck last month with the government, the outpost residents agreed to move peacefully to an adjacent plot. But the deal was complicated after a Palestinian claimed ownership of the nearby plot, prompting the High Court to stop all work on the site. The lack of a clear solution has once again raised the possibility of a forced eviction of the Amona settlers and fears that violence could result. The residents of Amona last week renewed their protest against the government and vowed to resist the evacuation after the compromise appeared to fall through.

As outpost bill resurfaces, settlers bemoan failure to halt ‘final’ eviction-Hundreds gather outside Knesset to protest Amona demolition; West Bank leaders hail ‘opportunity to establish our place in the Land of Israel for hundreds of thousands of years to come’-By Raoul Wootliff January 30, 2017, 6:00 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

As lawmakers in the Knesset attempted to finalize a controversial bill to legalize West Bank outposts, hundreds of protesters gathered outside the parliament building Monday morning to decry the upcoming evacuation of Amona, the most contentious of the unrecognized settlements. The legislation — which would legalize some 4,000 housing units in the West Bank built on privately owned Palestinian land — was set to face a final plenary vote Monday evening but was then postponed until at least Tuesday.Condemned by the Barack Obama administration, the European Union, the United Nations and Israel’s attorney general, the so-called Regulation Law is being hailed by the settler movement as a turning point in the 50-year settlement project. On Sunday, he announced it would come back for a vote.“This is a historic moment,” Avi Roeh, head of the Binyamin Regional Council told the crowd. “This is our opportunity to establish our place in the Land of Israel for hundreds of thousands of years to come.”But for the 1,000-plus crowd of youths and families that made their way mostly from West Bank settlements to Jerusalem, the bill barely makes up for the “travesty” of the Amona evacuation.“It is thanks to the fight for Amona that the Regulation Law will be passed,” bellowed Yesha Council chairman Yossi Dagan from the temporary podium less than a hundred meters from the Knesset gates. “But despite the law, the government has failed to prevent the unfathomable tragedy of uprooting a Jewish settlement.”First put forward by the Jewish Home party, the original proposal was intended to overturn a High Court of Justice verdict forbidding the expropriation of the privately owned Palestinian land on which Amona sits. The clause that would have circumvented that court ruling, however, was removed from the bill following coalition infighting. While coalition sources on Sunday said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had instructed his chief of staff Yoav Horowitz to explore the possibility of including Amona in the final bill, a special committee created to oversee the legislation debated the final the text Monday without mention of the outpost. In a deal struck last month with the government, the outpost residents agreed to move peacefully to an adjacent plot. Some officials, including Netanyahu himself, have also warned that the law could see Israeli officials brought before the International Criminal Court in The Hague. But for the hundreds of teenagers who turned up to the Jerusalem protest, the details of the bill and its possible legality were not important.“We are just here to support the people of Amona,” 15-year-old Techelet Greenberg from the West Bank settlement of Eli said. “We hope the bill will pass, and we hope that we can stop the evacuation but for now, we just want to show support so that hopefully this will be the final evacuation.”

No Syria safe zones without our okay, Damascus demands-Moallem says plan favored by Trump administration will violate sovereignty unless coordinated with Assad regime-By Bassem Mroue January 30, 2017, 7:03 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

BEIRUT (AP) — Syria warned Monday that the creation of safe zones for civilians for which US President Donald Trump has expressed interest would violate the country’s sovereignty unless organized in coordination with the Syrian government. The warning was issued in Damascus by Foreign Minister Walid Moallem during a meeting with the head of the UN refugee agency UNHCR, Filippo Grandi, who began an official visit to Syria on Monday. The announcement came about a week after the Trump administration expressed interest in setting up safe zones for civilians in Syria, an idea that was greeted with caution by Russia and Turkey, who have taken the lead in the latest efforts to end the Mideast country’s devastating six-year war.The idea of safe zones, proposed by both Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton during the US presidential election campaign, was ruled out by the Obama administration for fear it would put US aircraft in harm’s way with Russia waging an air campaign to aid Syrian President Bashar Assad’s forces since September 2015.The recent rapprochement between Russia and Turkey, the latter a key backer of Syrian rebels, which now has thousands of troops in northern Syria, in theory makes the creation of safe zones more achievable. So does Trump’s pledge to mend ties with Moscow. However, Syrian state news agency SANA said the foreign ministry and UNHCR officials agreed that any attempt to impose safe zones without coordination with the Syrian government would be an “unsafe act and will pose a violation of the Syrian sovereignty.”Meanwhile, Moallem called on all Syrian refugees who fled the war in their homeland to return home, pledging that the government will meet all their needs. It was not clear if the call was related to Trump’s signing of executive orders placing a 90-day ban on travel to the US by citizens of Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia or Yemen, and a 120-day suspension of the US refugee program. Syrians are indefinitely blocked from entry.Syria’s conflict, which began in March 2011, has displaced half the country’s population and seen more than four million Syrians fleeing the country as refugees, mostly to neighboring countries.SANA said Moallem briefed Grandi on the “huge efforts” the Syrian government is exerting to improve the living conditions of its people and the displaced as well. For his part, Grandi stressed that the offering of humanitarian aid will continue.Earlier on Monday, the Syrian military said the evacuation of rebels and their families from the Barada Valley as part of an agreement to surrender the capital region’s primary water source has been completed. The military said via the Telegram messaging system that 1,142 fighters and 760 members of their families have been evacuated from the region northwest of the capital Damascus. They were taken in buses to the rebel-held northwestern province of Idlib. The evacuation marks the end of a nearly six-week-long standoff between rebels and pro-government forces that led to severe water cuts to some five million people around Damascus. It said more people are to be evacuated from the nearby village of Harira but that the process is being delayed because the roads are closed with snow.Meanwhile, the Russian military said its heavy bombers struck the Islamic State group in eastern Syria on Monday, the latest in a series of such raids in recent days. The Russian Defense Ministry said six Tu-22M3 bombers flew from their base in Russia to strike IS targets in the province of Deir el-Zour. It followed four previous such raids between January 21 and 25. Monday’s raid targeted two militant command facilities along with weapons and ammunition depots and militants.Syrian troops have been struggling to repel an IS offensive in Deir el-Zour since earlier this month. The extremists control the entire province except for a small pocket of the provincial capital and a nearby air base.

Polish FM says Trump has the right to ban immigrants-Witold Waszczykowski, whose party opposes entry of Muslim refugees, says ‘no state has the duty to accept immigrants’-By AP January 30, 2017, 12:54 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

WARSAW, Poland — Poland’s foreign minister has defended US President Donald Trump’s immigration order banning entry to people from seven mostly Muslim countries, arguing that every sovereign country has the right to decide its own immigration policy.Witold Waszczykowski said “no state has the duty to accept immigrants” and that Trump “was elected president, he has the right” to impose the ban.Waszczykowski made his comments Sunday evening on Polsat News, a private television station.Waszczykowski belongs to a conservative government that is strongly opposed to accepting Muslim refugees. Last year it played a key role in blocking a European Union effort to resettle refugees across the bloc.Trump’s immigration order has sparked protests at airports and the condemnation of many across the world as a human rights violation.

'It's not a Muslim ban,' president says-Trump: ‘Very strict’ US travel ban ‘working very nicely’-After blocking entry of Syrian refugees, halting immigration from seven Muslim countries, US president vows ‘we’re going to have extreme vetting which we should have had for years’-By AFP January 29, 2017, 12:59 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

US President Donald Trump boasted Saturday that his “very strict” crackdown on Muslim immigration was working “very nicely,” amid mounting resistance to the order which has been branded by many as blatantly discriminatory. In an executive order signed Friday, Trump halted the arrival of refugees for at least 120 days and imposed tough new controls on travelers from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Syria and Yemen for the next three months.“It’s not a Muslim ban,” Trump said in the Oval Office. “It’s working out very nicely. You see it at the airports, you see it all over,” Trump told reporters, after travelers from those countries were stopped from boarding US-bound planes, triggering angry protests.“We’re going to have a very, very strict ban and we’re going to have extreme vetting which we should have had in this country for many years.”His comments came as the order faced its first lawsuit, signaling a tough battle ahead in US courts. The legal challenge was filed by the American Civil Liberties Union and other advocacy groups after two Iraqi men were detained Friday night at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York.Several US airports were rocked by protests and arrests after the ban.It was not immediately clear how many travelers got caught up in Trump’s crackdown, which he says is necessary to prevent “radical Islamic terrorists” from entering the United States. The ban has also triggered a political backlash.“To my colleagues: don’t ever again lecture me on American moral leadership if you chose to be silent today,” Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy, a Democrat, tweeted late Friday. His tweet was accompanied by the now iconic photograph of Aylan Kurdi, a three-year-old Syrian boy whose body was washed up on a beach in Turkey in 2015 after a failed attempt to flee Syria’s brutal war to join relatives in Canada.Trump spoke by phone on Saturday with various world leaders, amid growing international alarm over his moves. In a flurry of calls that started early in the morning and rounded out an already frantically paced week, Trump spoke with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Francois Hollande and Russian President Vladimir Putin. He also had a call planned for later in the day with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.Hollande urged Trump to “respect” the principle of accepting refugees. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, whose country has been open about welcoming refugees, wrote a Twitter message of support to “those fleeing persecution, terror and war.”To those fleeing persecution, terror & war, Canadians will welcome you, regardless of your faith. Diversity is our strength #WelcomeToCanada— Justin Trudeau (@JustinTrudeau) January 28, 2017-Trump’s pronouncement on Muslim immigration makes good on one of his most controversial campaign promises to subject travelers from Islamic countries to “extreme vetting,” which he declared would make America safe from “radical Islamic terrorists.”“This is big stuff,” the new US president declared at the Pentagon on Friday, after signing an executive order entitled “Protection of the nation from foreign terrorist entry into the United States.”The decree suspends the entire US refugee resettlement program for at least 120 days while tough vetting rules are established. The new protocols “ensure that those approved for refugee admission do not pose a threat to the security and welfare of the United States.”In addition, they specifically bar Syrian refugees from the United States indefinitely, or until the president himself decides that they no longer pose a threat.Meanwhile, no visas will be issued for 90 days to migrants or visitors from seven mainly Muslim countries: Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.US authorities wasted no time implementing Trump’s order, detaining travelers arriving at American airports within hours of the measures being signed, media reports said Saturday.

GOD CREATED THEM MALE AND FEMALE IN MARRIAGE

GENESIS 1:27-28
27  So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
28  And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply,(HAVE LOTS OF CHILDREN) and replenish the earth,(HOMOSEXUALS CAN NOT REPLENISH THE EARTH WITH CHILDREN)(BY HAVING SEX WITH EACH OTHER) and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

GENESIS 2:21-24
21  And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;
22  And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.
23  And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.
24  Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

MATTHEW 19:4-6
4  And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,
5  And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?
6  Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I(GOD) will spue (VOMIT) thee out of my mouth.
17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:
18 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.
19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

Norway's Lutheran Church embraces same-sex marriage-[Reuters]-By Gwladys Fouche-YAHOONEWS-January 30, 2017

OSLO (Reuters) - Norway's Lutheran Church voted on Monday in favor of new ceremonial language that will allow its pastors to conduct same-sex marriages, bringing it into line with several other mainstream Protestant denominations abroad.Last April the annual conference of the Church - to which nearly three quarters of Norwegians said in 2015 they belonged - backed the principle of same-sex marriages, but did not agree on a wording.Monday's decision involved modifying the marriage text to make it gender-neutral, removing the words "bride" and "groom". The new liturgy will come into effect on Wednesday. In 2015 the French Protestant Church allowed gay marriage blessings, while the U.S. Presbyterian Church approved a change in the wording of its constitution to include same-sex marriage."I hope that all Churches in the world can be inspired by this new liturgy," said Gard Sandaker-Nilsen, leader of the Open Public Church, a movement within the Lutheran Church that campaigned to change the rules.Norway became the second country in the world after Denmark to allow same-sex registered partnerships in 1993, and it has allowed civil same-sex marriage since 2009.Some 73 percent of Norwegians were members of the Lutheran Church in 2015, according to the national statistics agency. The number has gradually declined in recent decades.(editing by John Stonestreet)

Miramichi residents grateful for use of warming centres after ice storm-[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-January 29, 2017

While powers crews worked to restore power Sunday, Miramichi residents were happy they had the warming centres to use while they waited.Nathan Carey lives in the area and made use of the warming centres after he lost power during the ice storm.Carey, his wife and three children have been without power for five days and were hoping they would be among the 85 percent of customers NB Power targeted to be restored in Miramichi Sunday."We're just trying to keep everybody warm and fed. Thank God for the Golden Hawk so we could have showers and stuff like that," he said. Miramichi city councillor Billy Fleiger has been volunteering his time to help out at the warming centre set up at the Golden Hawk Recreation Centre. The city set up two warming centres to assist residents in the region after the ice storm Tuesday and Wednesday downed trees, power lines and hydro poles and cut off electricity to households across the province.-Busy centre-"We're open for all of Northumberland County...it's here for them. Come in and get some hot food, give the kids a chance to rest," said Fleiger. At its busiest, the councillor said there were at least 200 people making use of the centre each day.Carey urged other area residents to go to the warming centres if they were still without power and cold. "They are there to accommodate you...pride be damned - go get some help if you need it."Although his power was restored Saturday, Jason Michaud says after losing all the food in his fridge, he is still depending on the warming centre until he can replenish the supplies."I'm just glad that this place is here that we can come and at least have something to eat and feed the kids."Michaud had just bought groceries before the storm Tuesday and guesses he lost $150 worth of food during the outage.Despite that, Michaud, who is presently unemployed, said he is grateful for the support from his family and community."We'll bounce back from this," he said. "The community is so great to help out here."Fleiger had nothing but praise for the city's volunteer efforts."We've got the greatest volunteers in the world...the people are bringing food, whatever we need, it's amazing."Miramichi mayor Adam Lordon has said in daily updates the warming centres will remain open until they are no longer needed. There are 46 warming centres and emergency shelters open in various locations across the province.

Open-ended shifts for snowplow drivers raise questions-[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-January 30, 2017

The New Brunswick government may be endangering snowplow operators and the public by allowing work shifts that can last up to 24 hours.Time-sheet information for plow drivers during the brutal winter of 2015 has been obtained by CBC News after an appeal to the province's Information and Privacy Commissioner. The data shows 60 individual driver shifts lasted 20 hours or more that winter, when southern New Brunswick saw record snowfalls. The time-sheet records that the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure had resisted releasing also show drivers worked double shifts several days in a row.Andy Hardy, president of the CUPE local representing New Brunswick plow drivers, said that over the past several years the province has eliminated spare operators in most districts, leaving only one driver usually available for each piece of equipment."The stress level out there for our operators, it's unreal," Hardy said. "And these operators, they worked constantly."There was a lot of operators. There was a lot of burnout where they never had a chance to get a rest. They worked pretty well 24-7 to keep those roads clean that winter."-Feel duty to keep going-Hardy said drivers have the option of stopping after 16 hours,or a double shift, but with no one to take over, they feel a responsibility to continue working to keep the roads open for the public and emergency vehicles. One Department of Transportation district stands out for long hours.During a late January storm, drivers at the Loch Lomond depot worked almost non-stop.One operator put in 21 hours on Jan. 31 and 20 hours on Feb. 1, followed by two 16-hour shifts on both Feb 2 and Feb. 3. Over the next three days, he worked shifts of 14, 21 and 16 hours.Other operators in the depot logged similar hours. That winter the Loch Lomond depot racked up 31 individual plow-operator shifts of 20 hours or more.In the meantime, drivers at the Woodmans Point depot were also recording long hours, with two working 24-hour shifts on Jan. 28.-Able to nap at depot-In an email statement, Jeff Hull of the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure said drivers only work shifts longer than 16 hours in exceptional circumstances. He added that bunks are available at the depot so drivers can catch some sleep if they are tired, and that they are paid during that down time."In extreme weather situations, operators and their supervisors will communicate closely around extended periods of work, with a focus on fatigue awareness," said Hull."What these numbers show is the amount of time the employee stayed at the workplace, which can include meals, bunk time and non-driving related work."Fatigue has been identified as a major issue for snowplow operators across North America.A mammoth 2014 study by Virginia Tech University surveyed 1,000 snowplow drivers in 33 U.S. states. It found 70 percent of drivers reported being fatigued at least part of the time. They also say it has an impact on their performance and on their judgment."They really have to maintain a high level of alertness as they're going down the road, and this can be draining," said Matt Camden, the report's lead author."They will get tired, of course, and it could very easily jeopardize their safety or make them feel unsafe. Even if nothing happens it can make them feel unsafe while operating on the road."Camden said the researchers also saw the need for plow drivers to open up to supervisors if they are tired."One thing we found was that there was a bit of a disconnect between when managers thought the operators were fatigued and when operators were fatigued actually."For the study, four plow trucks were rigged with GPS devices and cameras inside and out.The drivers wore actigraphs around the clock so their sleep could be monitored.A number of safety-related incidents were detailed in the study, all involving the same driver and occurring after nights he had received slept only four and half hours.-Can't stay awake at wheel-Researchers actually watched camera recordings of the operator nodding off while driving his snowplow. Camden said the sample size is too small to be scientific but further study is clearly warranted.Snowplow operators — like police officers, pilots and air traffic controllers — are given priority over others on the waiting list at the Atlantic Sleep Centre at the Saint John Regional Hospital.Dr. Rachel Morehouse, the medical director of the centre, said varying shifts, and the stress associated with the job, put the drivers in a special category. Add in long shifts day after day, as was the case in southern New Brunswick in 2015, and the person will be in difficulty."That person, physically and mentally, is suffering," Morehouse said. "So their mental health, their physical health, their ability to do their job as they would wish to do their job is suffering."Is it safe? "No, it's not safe. Is it safer than not having the roads plowed? Yeah, probably. Is it safer for them? No. Is it safer for us? Maybe. But it's not safe, and it's far from ideal."

Storms preview sea-rise damage to California roads, cities-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-January 30, 2017

SAN FRANCISCO — Ocean rise already is worsening the floods and high tides sweeping California this stormy winter, climate experts say, and this month's damage and deaths highlight that even a state known as a global leader in fighting climate change has yet to tackle some of the hardest work of dealing with it.The critical steps yet to come include starting to decide which low-lying cities, airports and highways, along with threatened landmarks like San Francisco's Embarcadero, to hoist above the rising water and which to abandon — and where to start getting the many billions of dollars for those climate rescues."People always tell us we're ahead of the curve" on climate change, said Larry Goldzband, head of a regional San Francisco Bay commission that late last year stepped up regional efforts to identify and prioritize communities and infrastructure at risk from rising sea level. As proud as Californians are of their climate-change efforts, "I always think, 'Man, if we are ahead of the curve, I feel sorry for the rest of the country,'" Goldzband said.A 2009 study by the Pacific Institute, a California-based environment think-tank, estimated $100 billion in property was at risk from ocean rise in California, two-thirds of it in the low-lying San Francisco Bay region. That's far more than the state takes in from income taxes each year.Experts say the real cost of raising, shielding or evacuating vulnerable spots, which include mass-transit systems, power plants and sewage plants, could be far higher."Astronomical. The San Francisco airport? What would it cost to replace that?" asked Gary Griggs, director of the Institute of Marine Sciences at the University of California, Santa Cruz.Griggs is part of a scientific working group requested by Gov. Jerry Brown to examine whether new evidence on melting and potential ice-sheet collapse in the Antarctic, whose ice holds almost 90 per cent of the Earth's fresh water, means sea-level rise may be even higher than the 3 feet projected for California by the end of the century. The Pacific off California has risen just about 8 inches overall in the past century. For the next three decades or so, the accelerating pace of sea rise primarily will make worse the flooding and erosion from big storms like this month's in California."Probably until mid-century, short-term events ... are going to be more damaging than sea-level rise itself," Griggs said.In January, a series of powerful storms brought more than a foot of rain to parts of the San Francisco Bay, triggered record 34-foot waves off the state's central coast, killed at least five people and prompted the evacuations of thousands around the state. The dead included a cab driver who slid off a wet road and into a swollen estuary off Oakland's airport, which along with San Francisco's bayside airport is one of the big sites expected to be hit more and more often by flooding as the Pacific Ocean rises a foot over the next 30 years.Brown, who declared an emergency in much of the state this month because of flooded towns and highways, crumbled roads and rockslides, has vowed to fight if the fossil-fuel friendly Trump administration goes after California's landmark programs to reduce climate-changing carbon emissions. Brown's administration in 2015 also sought to speed up planning for dealing with sea rise and other climate change. On a sparkling afternoon after three storms brought some of the heaviest rain and surf to California in decades, ecologist Fraser Shilling stood on a highway bridge north of San Francisco, looking over sprawling miles of floodwater and salty bay water swallowing the highway's exit ramp, and drowning salt marshes and fence posts as far as the eye could see.State Route 37 is a busy highway for tens of thousands of commuters and truckers in and out of California's wine country. Shilling, a co-director of the Road Ecology Center at the University of California, Davis, had forecast it wouldn't be seeing this kind of regular high water for at least another 20 years."This is the new normal," says Shilling, who believes sea rise already is changing conditions on the ground more than some state agencies realize. "And all of our infrastructure is not accommodating the new normal."Pumps and bulldozers laboured to clear water from another stretch of the state highway, two weeks after the storms.State and local governments acknowledge that low-lying sites like State Route 37 will be hit by sea-rise worsened floods and tides more and more, before the bay claims them completely. But authorities are stymied by the financial and political difficulties of raising billions to elevate or protect the highway, or reroute it through pricey vineyards inland. As it is now, substantial state funding isn't expected for this particular highway until 2088, long after parts of it are expected to be regularly submerged."Our biggest challenge is how to fund and build it before it goes underwater," said Kate Miller, executive director of the transportation authority for Napa County.California might not really start funding its rescues from sea rise until a major part of the public is inconvenienced, said state Sen. Jerry Hill, a Democrat from San Mateo County.Hill's prediction of what would free the funds: If a low-lying stretch of U.S. Highway 101 near San Francisco's old Candlestick Park floods, and much of the Bay Area suddenly could not get to work."That will be the wake-up call, when the rubber hits the road," he said. "When the water hits the tailpipe."Ellen Knickmeyer, The Associated Press.

EARTH WORSHIP

DEUTERONOMY 17:3-4
3 And hath gone and served other gods, and worshipped them, either the sun, or moon, or any of the host of heaven, which I have not commanded;
4 And it be told thee, and thou hast heard of it, and enquired diligently, and, behold, it be true, and the thing certain, that such abomination is wrought in Israel:

DEUTORONOMY 4:15-19
15  Take ye therefore good heed unto yourselves; for ye saw no manner of similitude on the day that the LORD spake unto you in Horeb out of the midst of the fire:
16  Lest ye corrupt yourselves, and make you a graven image, the similitude of any figure, the likeness of male or female,
17  The likeness of any beast that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged fowl that flieth in the air,
18  The likeness of any thing that creepeth on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the waters beneath the earth:
19  And lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun, and the moon, and the stars, even all the host of heaven, shouldest be driven to worship them, and serve them, which the LORD thy God hath divided unto all nations under the whole heaven.

2 KINGS 23:5
5 And he put down the idolatrous priests, whom the kings of Judah had ordained to burn incense in the high places in the cities of Judah, and in the places round about Jerusalem; them also that burned incense unto Baal, to the sun, and to the moon, and to the planets, and to all the host of heaven.

Trump causes 'anxiety' about Paris climate deal By Peter Teffer-JAN 30,17-EUOBSERVER

Brussels, Today, 13:20-Maros Sefcovic, the EU's top energy official, has said US president Donald Trump has caused “anxiety” about the future of the Paris climate agreement, but that it was too soon to despair.“I wouldn't hide that in discussions with our partners, there is a lot of anxiety what would be the future of US policies, how this would affect the implementation of the Paris agreement,” Sefcovic, a vice-president of the European Commission responsible for its “energy union” policy, told journalists in Brussels on Monday (30 January). He noted that the Paris deal on slowing global warming, agreed in December 2015, has been signed and ratified by the United States and said that Trump’s policy on climate was not yet clear.“We still have to wait for the concretisation of what was said in the election campaign. We have seen that the position was already several times modified,” said Sefcovic. There is a scientific consensus that climate change is caused by human activity.Trump, in his election campaign, said that that was a “hoax”, but he also said he would keep an “open mind” on the issue. His communications policy since entering the White House indicates that he could backtrack from US commitments on emissions reductions. The official White House website has published a new page saying that Trump was “committed to eliminating harmful and unnecessary policies such as the Climate Action Plan”.It said the US should “embrace” fossil fuels “by reviving America’s coal industry”.It also said there was an “estimated $50 trillion in untapped shale, oil, and natural gas reserves” up for grabs on US territory.-Liquefied natural gas-Climate change concerns aside, the EU is interested in US gas exports in order to reduce dependence on Russia.Sefcovic said on Monday that the United States could become the world's largest exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG).The EU has embraced LNG as an alternative to gas in pipelines, and the energy union project, which Sefovic leads, began as a strategy to reduce dependence on Russian supplies.“Every analyst I talk to, [says] they expect that US would become, or has a very strong chance to become, the number one LNG exporter as of 2020,” said Sefcovic.“If there is one issue where nobody has a doubt if it comes to the new American administration: they are very pro-business.“I cannot imagine they would create any problems for those companies which want to export LNG," he said.-Energy politics-He did not foresee any risk that Trump would use energy policy to play politics or discriminate against European companies. The commissioner said that Europe was a “good customer” and that energy suppliers were “fighting for market share in Europe”.“We are big, we import a lot, we pay on time, we are predictable,” he said.LNG can be more easily stored and transported around the world than gaseous gas. Natural gas is a fossil fuel that contributes to global warming, but is less harmful than coal and oil.Sefcovic said he expected LNG to become a global commodity “like oil”, possibly with daily fluctuating prices. That would represent a move away from the long-term contracts and Russian dependency associated with pipeline gas.“We are open for business, but guys, we expect good price, good services, no strings attached,” Sefcovic said, addressing energy companies.-Business case-He repeated what the EU's top civil servant on climate action said last week - that there was a “strong business case” to support clean energy.“The power of argument, the power of leading examples, showing that it works and that it creates a good business opportunity and new jobs; that would be our strongest tools which we would want to use in Europe to convince the new American administration to also be in the leading coalition in terms of fighting climate change,” Sefcovic said.-Trump's man in Brussels-More details about the United States' energy and climate policy should become available later this week.On Wednesday (1 February), Myron Ebell will speak at an event in Brussels, organised by the mildly eurosceptic European-level political party, the Alliance of Conservatives and Reformists in Europe.Ebell was Trump's pick to lead the transition team for the United States Environmental Protection Agency and a known denier of climate change science.

Merkel leads EU revolt on Trump's Muslim ban By Eszter Zalan-JAN 30,17-EUOBSERVER

BRUSSELS, Today, 09:30-Several European leaders have rejected US president Donald Trump's anti-Muslim travel ban amid concern over his commitment to transatlantic values. The ban, on refugees and citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries, saw European capitals scramble to determine how it would effect their dual nationality citizens. In a sign of increasingly strained relations with the new US administration, German chancellor Angela Merkel told Trump that his war on terrorism was not a fit reason to renege on the 1951 Geneva Convention, which requires signatories to help people fleeing from conflict.Merkel’s spokesperson Steffen Seibert said she spoke with Trump by phone for 45 minutes on Saturday."She is convinced that even the necessary, decisive battle against terrorism does not justify putting people of a specific background or faith under general suspicion," Seibert said.German-US relations under Trump already got off to a rough start when he earlier called Merkel's more open refugee policy a "catastrophic mistake".The German and Dutch foreign ministers also issued a joint statement on Sunday saying they were in contact with US authorities to find out what the executive order meant for their citizens."We are determined to protect the rights of our citizens and will take rapid action within the European Union about the steps that are now needed," Germany's Sigmar Gabriel and his Dutch counterpart, Bert Koenders, said.UK prime minister Theresa May's spokesperson on Sunday said that the PM did "not agree" with Trump's order and would stand up to Trump if it negatively affected British citizens.May was criticised over the weekend for her docile approach to Trump after she told press in Turkey that the ban was an internal matter for the US administration.British foreign minister Boris Johnson, who on Sunday said it was "divisive and wrong to stigmatise [people] because of [their] nationality", was also seeking clarification from US officials what the executive order meant for UK citizens. The foreign ministers of Sweden, Denmark and Finland likewise condemned Trump’s blanket ban.-'Pillars of Europe'-Other leaders expressed concern over the US president’s undermining of transatlantic values.Italy's prime minister Paolo Gentilioni said on Sunday in a Twitter post, without mentioning Trump directly, that: "Italy is anchored in its values. Open society, pluralism, no discrimination. They are the pillars of Europe."Italy is one of the main point of entry for migrants and refugees into Europe through the Mediterranean Sea.France's president Francois Hollande said on Saturday that "when he [Trump] adopts protectionist measures, which could destabilise economies not just in Europe but the economies of the main countries of the world, we have to respond".“When he refuses the arrival of refugees, while Europe has done its duty, we have to respond," he said."The talk we hear coming from the US encourages populism and even extremism," Hollande added.European Parliament liberal leader Guy Verhofstadt tweeted: "Trump's #MuslimBan goes against the West's values and human rights. We must not be complacent."Euroscpetics welcomed the move, however.Nigel Farage, a British MEP who spearheaded the Brexit campaign, said Trump was fully entitled to order the ban which was designed to fight the jihadist group Isis."Trump must not take advice on how to deal with terrorism from France and Germany," Farage tweeted on Sunday. The Dutch Freedom Party's leader, Geert Wilders, congratulated Trump on the move, tweeting: "Well done @POTUS [Trump] it's the only way to stay safe + free. I would do the same. Hope you'll add more Islamic countries like Saudi Arabia soon."-Russia-Trump has caused astonishment in Europe by predicting that other states will follow the UK out of the EU and by saying that Nato was “obsolete”.He has also indicated that he might give Russia a free hand in Ukraine in return for cooperation on nuclear disarmament and counter-terrorism.Britain’s May, who met Trump in Washington on Friday, said US and EU sanctions on Russia should stay in place until it stopped waging war in line with a ceasefire pact signed in Minsk.“We believe the sanctions should continue until we see that Minsk agreement full implemented and we’ve been continuing to argue that inside the European Union,” she said. She also said Trump had voiced his “unshakeable commitment” to Nato and that he was “100 percent behind” the military alliance.Trump spoke with Russian leader Vladimir Putin on Saturday.Their talks “touched upon the main aspects of the Ukrainian crisis” and Trump “stressed the importance of rebuilding mutually beneficial trade and economic ties between the two counties’ business communities”, a Kremlin statement said.

Opinion-Putin-Orban axis assails the EU By Peter Kreko-JAN 30,17-EUOBSERVER

Budapest, Today, 19:01-Russian president Vladimir Putin makes an official visit to Hungary on Thursday (2 February), only two years after his last visit in 2015.Hungary is the only EU member state that enjoys such frequent visits from the Russian leader since the annexation of Crimea.Putin’s last visit took place at one of the deepest points of the crisis in Ukraine. And since 2014 Orban has annual meetings with Putin - his most important diplomatic ally by far.Orban had been reserved about his pro-Putin views when talking to European audiences, but these inhibitions have disappeared since the election of Donald Trump. The Hungarian leader has just called for improving relations and abolishing sanctions towards Russia in Brussels. In preparation for Putin's visit, a statue commemorating the heroic acts of the Soviet soldiers in Hungary, made by a Russian artist, was erected in Hungary. It might seem strange for those who remember the earlier part of Orban's career, when he posed as an anti-communist hero and vocal critic of the Russian president. Ten years ago, Orban said: “Putin’s puppies have been proliferated in Europe and everybody starts to realise that this is a danger.”Now, Hungary's foreign minister Peter Szijjarto called Putin’s visit to Hungary timely, and told Reuters news agency that sanctions against Russia were “useless”.During a recent visit to Moscow, Szijjarto said: “So far, whenever we tried to work on improving our bilateral relationship, we had to face American pressure not to do it and European pressure not to do it.“Now ... there will be no American pressure.”-New attitudes-There are a lot of serious issues that Orban should, and could, raise when he talks to Putin.Such as a Hungarian MEP accused of being a Russian spy, ex-governmental officials with shady Russian links, Russian support for paramilitary extreme-right organisations in Hungary, and the allegations by pro-Kremlin media outlets that the 1956 Hungary anti-Soviet uprising was a “fascist coup” and “CIA plot”, to mention a few.But Orban won’t mention any of these points - he wants to strengthen the ties instead.Hungary’s political and economic dependence on Moscow has already increased dramatically due to business deals like the extension of the Paks nuclear facility, which has been overshadowed by lack of transparency and corruption allegations.-Energy cooperation-After agreeing to building a nuclear power plant with Russian loans in 2014, Putin and Orban now can renew the long-term gas deal between the two countries. This is crucial for Orban, as he hopes cheap gas can help him deliver his next parliamentary victory in 2018, as it helped him in 2014.But the “friendship”, as Orban calls it, is not limited to economic and political levels.Hungary's chief prosecutor Peter Polt has just returned from Russia, where he discussed ways of deepening cooperation with his Russian counterpart. It included exchanging information and practices on how to “defend the public interest” and "fighting corruption".At the same time, Orban is conducting a witch-hunt against NGOs in Hungary, using a Russian blueprint.Other EU countries are friendly towards Russia - Cyprus and Greece and Slovakia for example - but Hungary is the only one that uses Russia as a model in practically every field: ideological, economic and leadership, and all at the same time.-The new age of bilateralism-It is not only Orban’s uninhibited pro-Putin views that are encouraged by the victory of Trump. So is his euroscepticism.Orban recently welcomed the end of the era of multilateral deals after the presidential election in the US, saying the “age of bilateralism” is coming. This might sound strange from the prime minister of an EU member state, but it fits well with his scathing attitude to the EU in other areas, such as his characterisation of the Brexit vote as a rejection of “preaching and paralysis” from Brussels.Trump has also said that Brexit is a "wonderful thing", and his team openly supports forces that want to end the European Union.Steve Bannon, the chief strategist for Trump, promised to help France's National Front in the forthcoming presidential election, and Bannon's right-wing populist media outlet Breitbart plans to expand into France and Germany.Orban is openly promoting the European far-right's key points in his speeches, despite his party belonging to the centre-right EPP in the European Parliament.According to Hungarian media, Orban wanted to meet Heinz-Christian Strache, chairman of the far-right Freedom Party, when he visited Austria in October 2015, but backed down after pressure from EPP.Orban hopes that the current crises will sweep away the old European elite, and a new Europe, characterised by “truth-teller” politicians such as Le Pen, Strache and Geert Wilders (all are his fans) will emerge. One in which he can live out his ambitions to become an official, or non-official, leader of Europe.Orban and far-right politicians echo the same slogan, inspired by Trump: "Make Europe Great Again".-Enemies of the European Union-While the United States is strong enough to survive the Trump presidency, the EU might not be able to withstand the multiple threats it faces. The EPP, which has just secured the European Parliament presidency, has a special responsibility in saving the mainstream. The first step should be defending the EPP itself from threats among its own ranks. While commentators have suggested that the EPP should expel Orban's Fidesz party, it would do much more harm than good. Fidesz would lose all its inhibitions.Instead, the EPP should put more pressure on Fidesz, as they did successfully when it made Orban abandon his idea of reintroducing the death penalty.Instead of defending Orban, the EPP should draw clear lines - otherwise Orban will continue his policies, and the party's political rivals and enemies will be strengthened.Putin’s warm welcome in Hungary, ignoring the EPP line, might be a good opportunity. If the EPP does not act, Orban’s prophecy could come true: “In the years to come, the mainstream will follow precisely the course that Hungary has set forth.”Peter Kreko, Visiting Professor, Indiana University; Senior Associate, Political Capital Institute.

7 troops reported killed in fighting in eastern Ukraine-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-January 30, 2017

MOSCOW — At least seven Ukrainian troops have been killed in an apparent uptick in fighting in eastern Ukraine, government officials said on Monday. An armed conflict between government troops and separatist rebels has killed more than 9,600 since it began in 2014, according to the U.N. Human Rights Office. A January cease-fire had until recently helped to limit the fighting to sporadic shoot-outs.The government's press office for the operation in the east said it recorded an increase in fighting on several fronts on Sunday which left at least five killed and nine troops injured. Two more were killed and five injured Monday morning, north of the rebel stronghold of Donetsk, the press office said.Kyiv accused the rebels of using tanks and Grad multiple grenade launchers and said they recorded intensified fighting all along the front line — outside the separatist stronghold of Donetsk, in the south of the front-line north of Mariupol and west of Luhansk. The Grad launcher is among heavy- calibre weapons that should have been pulled back from the front line under a 2015 truce between the warring parties. In Donetsk, self-proclaimed separatist authorities reported substantial damage to civilian infrastructure, with several villages and Donetsk neighbourhoods left without electricity and gas supply. The separatist Donetsk News Agency reported one civilian killed and three injured in Makiivka, north-east of Donetsk. The rebels also reported that government forces opened fire on a check-point to the north of Donetsk where thousands of civilians pass through every day between rebel-held and government-controlled territories. Both sides reported that fighting continued on Monday morning. The Associated Press

Trudeau offers solidarity with Canada's Muslim community after mosque attack-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-January 30, 2017

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is sending his condolences to all Muslims in Canada and urging the country to stand together in the wake of Sunday's deadly shooting at a mosque in Quebec City.First in French and then in English, a solemn Trudeau delivered a heartfelt statement in the House of Commons today, shortly after Parliament resumed following the Christmas break.Trudeau addressed the Muslim community directly, as he described the hearts of 36 million Canadians as breaking alongside theirs following the tragedy, which claimed six lives at the Centre culturel islamique de Quebec.Interim Conservative leader Rona Ambrose and NDP Leader Tom Mulcair also offered their condolences and their thanks to Canadian first responders.U.S. President Donald Trump also spoke to Trudeau by phone Monday to offer his condolences to all Canadians in the wake of the deaths.Trump "offered to provide any assistance as needed," A Trudeau spokeswoman said.Later Monday, Trudeau was to travel to Quebec City, accompanied by both Ambrose and Mulcair — a rare show of cross-partisan unity that illustrated the magnitude of the tragedy.Six people between the ages of 35 and 70 were killed in the bloody massacre that took place Sunday at the mosque in Quebec City's Sainte-Foy neighbourhood, a shooting characterized by Trudeau as a terrorist attack. At least 12 other people were taken to hospital, two of whom were in critical condition, said the Centre Hospitalier Universite Laval. Police had two people in custody Sunday night, but by midday Monday were describing one of them as a witness.MPs from all sides of the partisan divide shared their reactions to the shooting Monday as they gathered on Parliament Hill for the first day in the Commons of 2017.Conservative MP Sylvie Boucher, who represents a riding in the Quebec City area, had tears in her eyes as she described her reaction to the attack."We always imagine that it is very far away from us, but it is very close," said Boucher, who described speaking to her daughters before leaving for Ottawa, telling them to share a positive message with their Muslim friends."Tell them the door will always be open."Many MPs were also still reeling from Trump's immigration ban on people from seven Muslim-majority countries, including Syrian refugees — a measure that has sown anxiety and confusion for Canadians and others around the world.Economic Development Minister Navdeep Bains called for openness at all levels, from economic trade to immigration and refugees."Countries are becoming more inward, they are promoting protectionism, and the other school of thought is really around innovation and being open to ideas, trade and people," he said."I think Canada's vision on this has been very clear. We believe in innovation, we believe in focusing on people, we believe in being open to ideas and to trade and that's what we've been saying since day one and that's what we'll continue to advance."When pressed for his specific thoughts on the immigration ban, Bains would only say Canada is making its values known through its actions."We are trying to lead by example and I think that's what the world expects us to do."New Democrat MP Charlie Angus called on the federal Liberal government to take a stronger stand against Trump."When you have the most powerful political figure of the world acting as a troll in charge, it has an effect," Angus said."The role of Canada, to be clear, is to work with our allies and to push back against the rising extremism that we see from the Trump administration."Omar Alghabra, the parliamentary secretary to the foreign affairs minister, said his own story of coming to Canada from Syria should serve as an example of what welcoming others can bring to a country."It shows how together we have built a unique society and how we are prospering together," said Alghabra, whose role as parliamentary secretary is focused on consular affairs."It's when you give individuals the opportunity to live in dignity, that's not only when they lift up themselves, but they lift the community they live within."— Follow @smithjoanna on Twitter-The Canadian Press.

Quebec mosque shooting 'lone wolf' attack - Canadian authorities-[Reuters]-By Allison Lampert and Anna Mehler Paperny-YAHOONEWS-January 30, 2017

QUEBEC CITY/TORONTO (Reuters) - Police were investigating a single suspect in a shooting at a Quebec City mosque that killed six people, with a second person who was arrested now considered a witness, authorities said on Monday. The suspect in the attack on Sunday evening prayers was Alexandre Bissonnette, a French-Canadian university student, according to a source familiar with the matter. The man now considered a witness was of Moroccan descent although his nationality was not immediately known, the source said. He was named by media as Mohamed Khadir or Mohammed Belkhadir by media.Police declined to give details of those arrested or possible motives for the shooting at the mosque, the Centre Culturel Islamique de Québec.Authorities initially said they had arrested two suspects, but in a Twitter message, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said that "following the investigation, the second individual is now considered as a witness."Police said on Monday morning they were confident no other suspects were involved in the attack."They consider this a lone wolf situation," the source said.Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told the House of Commons in Ottawa: "Make no mistake, this was a terrorist attack," adding a personal message to Canada's one million Muslims:"Know that we value you. You enrich our shared country in immeasurable ways. It is your home. Last night's horrible crime against the Muslim community was an act of terror committed against Canada and against all Canadians. We will grieve with you. We will defend you. We will love you. And we will stand with you."Somber parliamentarians observed a moment of silence. Trudeau will visit Quebec City later on Monday, a spokesman said. The attack was out of character for Quebec City, a city of just over 500,000 which reported just two murders in all of 2015. Mass shootings are rare in Canada, where gun control laws are stricter than in the United States. In addition to the six killed, five people were critically injured and 12 were treated for minor injuries, a spokeswoman for the Quebec City University Hospital said.U.S. President Donald Trump called Trudeau to express his condolences "and offered to provide any assistance as needed," said Trudeau spokesman Cameron Ahmad. He gave no further details about of the call.Over the weekend, Trudeau said Canada would welcome refugees, his response to an executive order by Trump on Friday to halt the U.S. refugee program and to temporarily bar citizens from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the United States.Trump's action, which the president said was "not about religion - this is about terror and keeping our country safe," was widely condemned in the United States and abroad as targeting Muslims.-FATHER OF FOUR KILLED-A father of four, the owner of a halal butcher near the mosque, was among those killed, said Pamela Sakinah El-hayet, a friend of one of the people at the mosque. The mosque concierge was killed, as was Ahmed Youness, a 21-year-old student, El-hayet told Reuters. One of El-hayet’s friends, Youness’ roommate, was in the mosque at the time of the shooting. He was unharmed, she said, but in total shock.Ali Assafiri, a student at Université Laval, said he had been running late for the evening prayers at the mosque, near the university in the Quebec City area. When he arrived, the mosque had been transformed by police into a crime scene."Everyone was in shock," Assafiri said by phone. "It was chaos."Université Laval is the oldest French-language university in North America, with 42,500 students.Vigils were planned for Montreal and Quebec City, the provincial capital, as well as in Edmonton. There was an outpouring of support for the mosque on social media.Citizens for Public Justice, a group of Canadian Christians, churches and other religious congregations, expressed their solidarity with the Muslim community of Quebec City."Last night's shooting, targeting people of faith during their worship and prayer, is a deplorable attack on all Canadians and our most deeply-held values," the group's executive director, Joe Gunn, said. While the motive for the shooting was not known, incidents of Islamophobia have increased in Quebec in recent years. The face-covering, or niqab, became a big issue in the 2015 Canadian federal election, especially in Quebec, where the majority of the population supported a ban on it at citizenship ceremonies.Pope Francis offered his condolences to Cardinal Gerald Cyprien LaCroix, Archbishop of Quebec, who was visiting Rome on Monday.(Additional reporting by Kevin Dougherty in Quebec City,; Alastair Sharp and Anna Mehler Paperny in Toronto; David Ljunggren in Ottawa; Writing by Andrea Hopkins, Frances Kerry, Grant McCool; Editing by Jeffrey Benkoe and Alan Crosby)

Protesters rally against Trump at U.S. consulate in Toronto-[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-January 30, 2017

Hundreds of people protested against the Trump administration's travel ban on seven Muslim-majority countries outside the U.S. Consulate General in Toronto on Monday."Freedom for refugees, justice for immigrants," members of the crowd chanted during a march to city hall.Speakers urged the crowd to write letters to U.S. President Donald Trump, demanding the repeal of Friday's executive order that bars citizens from Yemen, Syria, Sudan, Somalia, Iraq, Libya and Iran from entering the U.S.They also said the U.S. should send its refugees to Canada and that protesters should consider privately sponsoring refugees.-'The time to act is now'-Organizer Dave Meslin said he was pleased with the turnout and the diversity represented at the protest."It's really great. That's what Canada is all about. Not just that we're diverse, but we come together. When one group is under attack, we all stand up to defend them," he told CBC Toronto. In a Facebook post about the event, Meslin said the protest was an opportunity for people to express opposition to Trump's travel ban because it is discriminatory, causing chaos and confusion, and aimed at vulnerable people who need help, not closed doors."Refugees, many of them children, are trapped in airports and being turned back to a dangerous home ... because of their religion, their language, their skin colour," he wrote. "For all those who believe in a compassionate world, the time to act is now."According to Meslin, the protest was intended to be peaceful and to show support for refugees and immigrants.Protesters briefly blocked traffic in front of the consulate at 360 University Ave., then walked to Nathan Phillips Square to continue the rally. After that, protesters walked back to the consulate. The consulate announced on Sunday it was suspending services on Monday due to the protest."Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence," its announcement reads.Const. Craig Brister, spokesperson for the Toronto Police Service, said southbound University Avenue was closed at Dundas Street West due to the protest, it reopened briefly while the protest moved to city hall, and is closed again because the protest returned. In the midst of protesting Trump's travel ban, the demonstrators also held a moment of silence for the six people killed in the Quebec City mosque shooting on Sunday night.

Italy welcomes 41 Syrian refugees, seeks bridges not walls-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-January 30, 2017

ROME — Italian government and church officials welcomed 41 Syrian refugees at Rome's airport Monday, saying they wanted to show solidarity with those fleeing war at a time when the U.S. is sending refugees away and building a wall to keep migrants out.The children among the Syrians were given balloons as they arrived, and a colorful sign reading "Welcome to Italy" greeted them and their parents in the airport terminal. They were the latest group of refugees to be resettled in Italy via a "humanitarian corridor" agreement between the Italian government and a Catholic-Protestant collaborative project."At a moment in time where they're building walls in other parts of the world, we are making bridges and bringing by air those who have the right to come to arrive in security," said the vice prefect of the interior ministry, Donatella Candura. The airlift was organized by the Sant'Egidio Community and the Federation of Evangelical Churches in Italy, an ecumenical collaboration that has resettled some 540 people in Italy in the past year as an alternative to the deadly sea crossings most migrants make to try to get to Italy at the hands of smugglers.Aid workers identify refugees in Lebanon and arrange for visas via the Italian embassy. Once in Italy, the churches take charge of finding the refugees housing, schooling and other immediate services to help them integrate into Italian society."We thank Italy for this hospitality, and we hope that all countries in all the world will do what Italy has done saving people who have escaped from Syria, from the war that is going on right now," said Ahmad Alkhaled, one of the refugees who fled his home in Homs. The refugees said many of them planned to return home after peace is restored to their country, and that regardless they didn't represent a security threat as the Trump administration charged."Islam is full of people who are friendly, who are full of friendship. There are no terrorists among us refugees," said M'aha Aleiwer from Homs.Italy's deputy foreign minister, Mario Giro, greeted the Syrians at the airport and denounced as inefficient the Trump administration's immigration restrictions banning travellers from seven predominantly Muslim countries, Syria included. He said walls, as proposed by the Trump administration along the Mexican border, have similarly been shown not to work. What works, Giro said, is the organized acceptance and distribution of refugees, with all security provisions necessary, coupled with economic accords with countries of origin to try to stem the flow of economic migrants."This works. Everything else doesn't," Giro said.Italy has been on the front line of Europe's migration crisis, co-ordinating the EU Mediterranean rescue operation and processing the migrants for asylum. While Italy has demanded the EU do more to help out, the government accepts its obligations to protect those who flee war, he said.At the same time the Syrians were being welcomed with open arms in Rome, police in Milan were announcing the results of a two-year investigation into a land-based trafficking nework for migrants who reach Italy by sea. Thirty-four arrest warrants were issued in Italy, France and Germany against the Egyptian-headed organization that arranged transport for the migrants from Sicily to Milan and beyond.Police showed images of migrants crammed into trucks that were stopped at the Ventimiglia border crossing with France and said they had documented some 60 such trafficking efforts.Chief prosecutor Ilda Boccassini called the phenomenon of human trafficking and exploitation of desperate migrants the "globalization of hatred."Nicole Winfield And Trisha Thomas, The Associated Press.

7 found guilty of robbing German churches to finance jihad-[Associated Press]-YAHOONEWS-January 30, 2017

BERLIN (AP) — A German court has found seven men guilty of burglarizing churches to financially support Islamic extremists fighting in Syria.Cologne's regional court sentenced the men to between three years and 6 months, and four years and 10 months in prison for the robberies.Judges say that there's sufficient proof the men — aged between 24 and 37 — broke into up to five churches and other buildings between 2013 and 2014.In Monday's ruling, judges said it was unclear whether the funds they generated were actually used to support armed jihad and if so, to what extent. An eighth man was sentenced to two years and 7 months for serious bodily harm.Five defendants are German citizens, two hold German and Tunisian citizenship, and one holds German and Moroccan citizenship.

Six killed in 'terrorist' attack on Quebec mosque-ITV-MON JAN 30,2017

Six people have been killed and eight injured in a shooting at a Quebec City mosque during evening prayers. Two arrests were made in what Canada's prime minister called an" act of terrorism".One suspect was arrested at the scene and another nearby in d'Orleans, Quebec.

Quebec premier calls for unity after 'terrorist attack'-ITV-JAN 30,17

Quebec's Premier has delivered a heartfelt message to the province's Muslims in a speech following the mosque shooting last night."I want to say a few words to our fellow Quebecers, Muslim Quebecers - we are with you, this is your home, you are welcome here, we are all Quebecers," said Premier Philippe Couillard this morning."The first duty of our society is to establish security, safety of the people, which we are doing with the police forces at all levels ... We also have to keep repeating that we must maintain solidarity and unity between our communities."He urged citizens to 'be there to indicate solidarity' at rallies on Monday to pay tribute to those affected by the attack.Six people were killed and eight injured in the shooting at a Quebec City mosque in what both Couillard and Canada's prime minister have called an "act of terrorism".

Quebec police say six dead and eight injured in mosque attack-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-January 30, 2017

QUEBEC — In what Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Premier Philippe Couillard both called a "terrorist attack," six people were killed and eight others injured in a shooting at a Quebec City mosque on Sunday.Provincial police spokeswoman Christine Coulombe said 39 other people survived and that two suspects were in custody.Coulombe said a joint terrorism task force that includes provincial police, the RCMP and Montreal police was deployed. The victims are believed to be between 35 and about 70, she said. One of the suspects was arrested not far from the mosque, while the other was arrested near Ile-d'Orleans, just east of Quebec City's downtown core."For the moment, nothing leads us to believe there are other suspects linked to the event, but you'll understand we're not taking any chances and we're making the necessary verifications to make sure there aren't any," Coulombe said.Police would not talk about the type of weapon used in the slayings at the mosque, which had a pig's head left outside the building last June.Trudeau issued a statement Sunday to denounce the killings."We condemn this terrorist attack on Muslims in a centre of worship and refuge," he said."On behalf of all Canadians, Sophie and I offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of all those who have died, and we wish a speedy recovery to those who have been injured."Couillard also called the incident a terrorist attack and said the national assembly will lower flags to half-mast."All our solidarity is with those who are close to the victims, the injured and their families," he said in a statement.Couillard called a news conference early Monday morning and said there is no doubt in his mind the killings constituted an act of terrorism."This is a murderous act perpetrated against a specific community and with considerable means," he said. "You can't play around with semantics here."The premier made an impassioned plea to Quebec Muslims."We are with you, you are at home, you are welcome at home, we are all Quebecers," he said. "We must continue to build a society together that is open, welcoming and peaceful. We will do it because we have the energy to do it and the will to do it."A live video feed on a Facebook page of the mosque showed images of multiple police vehicles and yellow police tape.Quebec City Mayor Regis Labeaume attended the same news conference and said his thoughts went out to the victims and their families."We have the impression we are dreaming," said Labeaume. "Quebec City, this magnificent city, is in mourning. I have often said in recent weeks that, despite the peace we have here, we are not immune (to attacks). Well, this has just proven that."The mosque issued a Facebook statement early Monday after confirmation of the six dead."All our thoughts are with the children who have to be told their father has died," said the Centre Culturel Islamique de Quebec-"May Allah give them patience and strength."Neighbourhood resident Carol-Ann Andrews said such an attack was "pretty surprising" for Quebec City."My thoughts went immediately to what was happening in the United States with all the laws and all the immigrants that are not allowed to come back," she said."Unfortunately there are people in the world whose minds are not totally OK so it could have given them an idea to get rid of other people. It's pathetic."Asked whether she feels safe, she replied, "We're not safe anywhere any more."Police blocked the area off, while a coffee shop stayed open beyond normal hours and served free coffee. The mosque is across the street from a big stone church-Vigils are planned in Montreal and Quebec City on Monday. The Canadian Press.

U.S. travel ban heralds 'turbulent times' for Africa - AU chief-[Reuters]-By Ed Cropley and Aaron Maasho-YAHOONEWS-January 30, 2017

ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) - The head of the African Union said on Monday that a U.S. travel ban on seven Muslim-majority countries including three in Africa heralded "turbulent times" for the continent.Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma spoke after U.S. President Donald Trump's executive order halted travel by people with passports from Libya, Somalia, Sudan and four other Middle East nations for 90 days, and stopped refugee resettlement for 120 days."We are entering very turbulent times," Dlamini-Zuma told African leaders at the start of a summit in the 54-nation bloc's headquarters in the Ethiopian capital."The very country to which many of our people were taken as slaves during the transatlantic slave trade has now decided to ban refugees from some of our countries. What do we do about this? Indeed, this is one of the greatest challenges to our unity and solidarity," the AU Commission chief added.Even before the travel ban was announced last week, African capitals had watched the transition from Barack Obama's administration to Trump with some concern, fearing his focus on "America first" could push trade and other ties with the continent down the U.S. list of priorities. The new U.N. secretary-general, Antonio Guterres, also hinted at unease about the U.S. administration's actions in his address at the summit, without mentioning Trump or the United States."African nations are among the world's largest and most generous hosts of refugees. African borders remain open for those who need protection, when so many borders are being closed even in some of the most developed countries in the world," said Guterres, who took over at the U.N. helm this month.(Reporting by Ed Cropley; Writing by Edmund Blair; Editing by Andrew Heavens)

HOARDING OF GOLD AND SILVER

JAMES 5:1-3
1 Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you.
2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten.
3 Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.

REVELATION 18:10,17,19
10 Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.(IN 1 HR THE STOCK MARKETS WORLDWIDE WILL CRASH)
17 For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off,
19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate.

EZEKIEL 7:19
19 They shall cast their silver in the streets, and their gold shall be removed:(CONFISCATED) their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD: they shall not satisfy their souls, neither fill their bowels: because it is the stumblingblock of their iniquity.

LUKE 2:1-3
1 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.

11  Then he said unto me, Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel: behold, they say, Our bones are dried, and our hope is lost: we are cut off for our parts.
12  Therefore prophesy and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, O my people, I will open your graves, and cause you to come up out of your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel.
13  And ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I have opened your graves, O my people, and brought you up out of your graves,
14  And shall put my spirit in you, and ye shall live, and I shall place you in your own land: then shall ye know that I the LORD have spoken it, and performed it, saith the LORD.

MATTHEW 24:7-8
