Because the referendum is not legally-binding, some politicians are suggesting a parliament vote before formally triggering Brexit.A petition on the UK government's website on holding a second referendum has gained more than 3 million signatories in just two days.European leaders, facing the biggest threat to European unity since World War Two, are divided over how swiftly divorce talks should start. Paris wants haste and German Chancellor Angela Merkel is urging patience. European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said he wanted to "start immediately".And on Sunday, Scotland's leader said Scotland may veto Brexit altogether. Under devolution rules, the parliaments of Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales are required to consent to any EU divorce, according to a report by the House of Lords.Most British politicians agree such a decisive 52-48 win for Leave in the referendum means a divorce must happen. He said he would bring a message of US support to both capitals. But he offered no concrete suggestions for how the two sides should make good on the decision by British voters to leave the 28-nation bloc.“The most important thing is that all of us, as leaders, work together to provide as much continuity, as much stability, as much certainty as possible,” Kerry said as he met in Rome with Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni.Responsible handling of the situation, he said, will help “the marketplace understand there are ways to minimize disruption, there are ways to smartly move ahead in order to protect the values and interests that we share.”Kerry had scheduled talks in Rome with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later Sunday. MADRID (Reuters) - Spain's two biggest left-wing parties, the Unidos Podemos alliance and the Socialist party, could come close to clinching an absolute majority together in a Sunday's parliamentary election, several exit polls showed.Unidos Podemos ("Together We Can"), a coalition of several leftist parties led by anti-austerity newcomer Podemos were seen winning 87 to 95 seats, and the Socialists 81 to 86 seats.Together they would have more than the 176 seats needed for an absolute majority, the exit polls from state broadcaster TVE and the ABC newspaper and Cope radio station showed.The conservative People's Party (PP) of acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy was seen winning the most seats overall with 117 to 124. Interior Minister Aryeh Deri on Sunday moved to strip two residents of East Jerusalem of their Israeli citizenship and residency status for their involvement with the Islamic State terror group.Deri asked Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit to revoke the citizenship of Luqman Atun, 24, who is a resident of the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Tsur Baher. Atun flew to Turkey in October 2014, but didn’t have enough money to be taken to the Syrian border.The interior minister also requested that the permanent residency status of East Jerusalemite Khalil Adel Khalil, 26, be revoked. That changed dramatically within an hour Thursday afternoon."I've never been so close to a fast-moving, ferocious fire. It was unbelievable," said Klippel, who later learned his house had caught fire. "I almost didn't have time to get out."Neighbourhoods of mobile homes were charred to their foundations. The fire is 5 per cent contained."The forces of nature collided with a spark," Kern County Fire Chief Brian Marshall said. "The mountainous terrain, five years of drought and wind gusts of over 20 mph all drove a fire over 11 miles in 13 hours."Shiela McFarland, 67, from Mountain Mesa, left her home three days ago, taking her computer, cellphone, papers and her miniature poodle, Snuggles.At an evacuation centre, she slept on a cot outdoors next to his kennel.McFarland said she didn't know whether her home survived, but she was philosophical."It doesn't matter if I've lost everything," she said Saturday. "I've got my little dog, my kids and my grandkids. I've seen other people in worse shape."The fire tore through small communities of houses and mobile homes that surround the lake — actually a reservoir — and the Kern River, a popular spot for fishing and whitewater rafting. The communities are nestled in foothills of the Sierra Nevada, a mountain range that runs hundreds of miles north and south through eastern California.Scorching heat and tinder-dry conditions across the West have contributed to massive wildfires in the past week that have destroyed properties and sent residents to seek shelter and hope for the best.Laura Rogers was one of those who thought she'd never see her home or her brother's home again. Instead, she was lucky to find both standing in a neighbourhood of mobile homes that was devastated."I was sure this place was gone last night," Rogers said through tears as she gestured at the destruction around her. "I mean look at this, I can't believe it. It's like a scary movie."The downspout of her brother's home was melted on the ground, but the structure was intact.Dozens of other homes were gone, left in piles of charred sheet metal and cinderblock foundations. Scorched tricycles, air conditioners and TV dishes littered the landscape. Burned-out cars sat on tireless rims and leafless trees poked from barren, blackened dirt.The California blaze erupted quickly, putting some 1,500 homes in jeopardy. Officials said they expect to find many more homes destroyed as the smoke clears and they do a more thorough check of smoulderingneighbourhoods.Gov. Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency, freeing up money and resources to fight the fire and cleanup its aftermath.Dramatic video from Thursday night showed homes fully engulfed and others already gone as propane tanks flared up and popped. Flames glowing in the steep, rocky hillsides were reflected on the lake.Residents described a frantic flight from communities surrounding the lake, a dammed section of the Kern River that is a destination for boating, fishing, rafting, hiking and camping.Cachet Kirby, 22, of Mount Mesa and her neighbours grabbed clothes, blankets and their dogs and fled through thick smoke as flames charged down the slopes. "It was to the point you couldn't see, you couldn't breathe," she said.She and others, exhausted Friday morning after little sleep in shelters and cars, were desperate for information about their homes. Gen. David Johnston and Wood Buffalo Mayor Melissa Blake. Sophie travelled with Alberta's deputy premier, Sarah Hoffman.They then boarded a bus for a tour through the city and were given a commentary about the fire's progress by fire Chief Darby Allen.At the destroyed neighbourhood of Beacon Hill, Sophie got off the bus and held onto a fence with her fingers while gazing at the devastation. Sophie asked about what supports are available to address the "emotional fallout" experienced by those whose homes were lost."It really is a case of a picture being worth a thousand or 10,000 words," said Johnston. "It's hard to fathom the devastation."The group later stopped at a sports complex downtown for a reception where people were waiting to greet the countess.Chantal Boutin was holding a Canadian flag that she managed to recover from the wreckage of her destroyed home and asked Sophie to sign it."When we saw that our house was burned to the ground, I saw the flag and the flag gave me hope," said Boutin.First responders, citizens and volunteers of the city were presented with the Governor General's Commendation for Outstanding Service.Johnston praised first responders that ran toward, instead of away, from the fire."That's what our people in uniform do. About 2,400 houses and other buildings — about 10 per cent of the city — were destroyed in the blaze.It's not the first time royals have visited a fire-ravaged Alberta town. Five years ago, newlyweds Prince William and Kate lifted spirits when they visited Slave Lake, Alta., where a wildfire destroyed one-third of the community.Friday was the fourth and last day of the couple's visit to Canada. They arrived in Toronto on Tuesday and made a quick visit to Winnipeg before heading to Saskatchewan.Sophie dedicated a park in Edmonton on Friday before she flew to Fort McMurray, while Edward handed out the Duke of Edinburgh International Award, named after his father, to young people in Calgary.The royal couple's visit to Canada was to conclude with a gala reception at the National Music Centre in Calgary.

(Reuters) - The gunman who killed 49 people at a gay nightclub in Orlando in the worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history has been buried at a Muslim cemetery in southern Florida, media reported on Thursday.A state death certificate lists Omar Mateen's burial site as the Muslim Cemetery of South Florida in Hialeah Gardens, a city in Miami-Dade County, according to the Orlando Sentinel.Mateen, 29, was killed by police after he took hostages during a three-hour standoff inside the Pulse nightclub. He also wounded 53 people in the June 12 attack.A funeral home located at the same address as the cemetery carried out the arrangements, the state document showed. It did not give Mateen's cause of death, the Sentinel reported.The cemetery could not immediately be reached for comment.Mateen, a U.S. citizen born in New York to Afghan immigrant parents, claimed allegiance to the leader of the Islamic State militant group in a phone call with authorities during his rampage.U.S. authorities believe that Mateen, who lived in Fort Pierce, Florida, with his wife and young child, was self-radicalized and acted alone without assistance or orders from abroad.The massacre took place during a Latin night celebration at Pulse, which was planning a Latin night street party on Thursday to benefit employees of the club. And we'll have updates on that story elsewhere in the show. Stay with us. But here in the U.S., last night saw a dance party in Orlando, Fla., that was more like a family reunion. The owners of Pulse nightclub, employees, patrons and friends gathered nearly two weeks after a gunman massacred 49 people at the gay club. NPR's Cheryl Corley has more.(SOUNDBITE OF MUSIC) UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN: Orlando, welcome to Latin night for Pulse.CHERYL CORLEY, BYLINE: The dance floor this night was a restaurant's parking lot about two miles away from the nightclub. There were flowers, rainbow flags, artwork and, of course, music and dance. But this was a night of remembrance, a fundraiser and a determined celebration. Robin Maynard with the nonprofit pulseoforlando.org says the LGBT community is moving forward.ROBIN MAYNARD: No man with a gun is going to put people back in the closet. No amount of hate is going to make us afraid. We're going to come out and celebrate and dance and move forward and laugh and love and be Orlando strong. The home of a former business has been converted into a mosque in Saint John for a unique reason.Toronto filmmaker Himy Syed discovered the modest-looking mosque on Somerset street in Saint John on his travels for his project, 30 Masjids (mosques) in Canada,.According to those behind it, it's the first of its kind in Canada — established specifically for Syrian refugees."They needed a place to pray that was convenient. Many of them don't have cars or have other means of getting to the main Muslim Association of New Brunswick masjid over in Rothesay," said Syed."It's a bit scratchy but it does the job. It's much appreciated, that location. It's cozy, it's small."-Former surgical supply building-The building was formerly the home of ABC Surgical Supplies,and that business's sign still hangs over the entrance — even after its conversion to a mosque.Two months ago the community came together and formed a non-profit organization called IRCC (Immigrant Relief Community Centre), and the building was leased with an option to buy."Everyone came in and helped and it's been a blessing so far," said Abdullah DeLancy, the treasurer for IRCC.The presence of the mosque is much appreciated by the Syrian refugees who make up 90 percent of the attendees."It has made life much easier for us, and we pray and worship here," said Mohammad Osamah Qwader, a Syrian refugee who moved to Saint John four months ago.-Walking distance-"It's just walking distance here so we can come as often as we can. As often as we want. And the other one was always just too far for us," he said.The city's existing mosque on Rothesay Road, built 40 years ago, was funded by 15 local Muslim families.The organization plans on buying the new building and renovating it.It will be used not only as a mosque, but as a learning and community centre as well."They have found a great place to worship. A great place to socialize. They have already had some classes in English and other subjects so they are happy," said DeLancy.

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The United Nations is concerned by the Syrian opposition's accusations that incendiary weapons have been used in Syria but said on Friday it is unable to verify the reports.The Syrian opposition High Negotiations Committee called on U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Thursday to launch an investigation into its accusations that Russia has used air-delivered incendiary weapons and cluster bombs in Syria.The Russian mission to the United Nations was not immediately available to comment on the accusations."We are concerned about the reports of the use of incendiary weapons in Aleppo, Syria," U.N. spokesman Farhan Haq said. "We are not in a position to verify these reports.""We expect that all parties and states involved in the conflict will refrain from their use in this way," he said.Russia deployed warplanes to Syria last year to support President Bashar al-Assad against rebels seeking to end his rule.
