Parliament apologizes for 1914 Komagata Maru incident-[Global News]-May 18, 2016-YAHOONEWS

OTTAWA - There’s a Punjabi phrase shouted to give thanks for victories: the truth will always prevail. So as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau concluded his formal apology Wednesday for the Komagata Maru incident of 1914, Amarjeet Singh Sohi, who had travelled from outside Toronto to watch the event, could not restrain himself. With a turban proudly on his head and a chest full of medals for his Canadian community service, he rose to his feet in the public gallery of the House of Commons and shouted the phrase for all to hear. And the hundreds of Indo-Canadians in attendance Wednesday for the historic moment roared back their thanks in union.“This is a country for people who bring prosperity to be part of the mainstream, work together, play together, pray together,” Sohi said afterwards. It wasn’t always that way.In 1914, the Canadian government turned away most of the passengers of the Japanese steamship Komagata Maru, nearly all Sikhs, who’d hoped to start a new life in Canada. The 376 passengers arrived off the coast of B.C. hoping to challenge the immigration laws at the time which refused entry to any Indians who had not arrived in Canada via a continuous journey from the home country — nearly impossible at the time.Except for 20 passengers who had previously lived in Canada, officials refused to allow the Indians in, even though they were British subjects just like every other Canadian of the time. The vessel sailed to India, where 19 of the passengers were killed in a skirmish with British authorities and dozens of others were imprisoned or forced into hiding.“Canada cannot solely be blamed for every tragic mistake that occurred with the Komagata Maru and its passengers,” Trudeau told the House, which was packed with MPs and onlookers, many of whom had travelled from across the country.“But Canada’s government was, without question, responsible for the laws that prevented these passengers from immigrating peacefully and securely. For that, and for every regrettable consequence that followed, we are sorry.”Trudeau’s formal apology is the second from a Canadian prime minister. Former prime minister Stephen Harper delivered an apology in 2008 in British Columbia, not the House of Commons. His words were part of a broader effort by the previous government to acknowledge the harsh treatment of Indians in the early years of the 20th century, said Opposition leader Rona Ambrose.“We can’t change the past,” she said. “But we can demonstrate that Canada has changed.”That was true for Gurjinder Kaur Gill, who travelled from Montreal for the event and stood with dozens of people afterwards at a small reception, hoping for a chance to meet Trudeau.Only 24, she said it was important for her to be part of acknowledging a moment in time that while she never experienced, so many in her community had been touched by the legacy of the ship and the laws of the day.“It’s like closure,” she said.“It shows that Canada is inclusive to everyone.”For B.C. Sikhs, the Komagata Maru incident was a pivotal moment. Many members of the community — whose numbers had been dwindling in part due to the discriminatory immigration laws of the day — raised thousands of dollars to support legal challenges for the people stuck on the boat.Today, there are over 200,000 Sikhs in the province and for all them, Wednesday was an exceptionally proud moment, said Harwinder Pal Singh, the high president of Vancouver’s Khalsa Diwan Society, the oldest Sikh society in the country. He said there is a lesson in the experience of the Komagata Maru he hopes not just the government, but all Canadians, take to heart.“We should welcome everybody who is in need and who is dreaming of a better future.”Follow @StephanieLevitz on Twitter

Commons erupts as opposition accuses Trudeau of elbowing female NDP MP-[The Canadian Press]-Joanna Smith and Kristy Kirkup, The Canadian Press-May 18, 2016-YAHOONEWS

OTTAWA - The House of Commons erupted in chaos Wednesday as a New Democrat MP and her opposition colleagues accused Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of elbowing her in the chest during a confrontation prior to a key vote.Quebec MP Ruth Ellen Brosseau said she was so shocked by the encounter, she had to leave the chamber as mayhem descended on the Commons floor, with Trudeau at one point in a face-to-face encounter with NDP Leader Tom Mulcair. The incident — coming amid the superheated atmosphere of the doctor-assisted death debate — had MPs in an uproar as they shouted and pounded their desks in a display of antipathy rarely seen in the parliamentary chamber.Footage from the Commons television feed showed Trudeau wading into a clutch of MPs, mostly New Democrats, and pulling Opposition whip Gordon Brown through the crowd in order to get the vote started. As Trudeau turns around to pull Brown through, Brosseau can be seen reacting with discomfort."I was standing in the centre talking to some colleagues," Brosseau told the House after calm was restored. "I was elbowed in the chest by the prime minister and then I had to leave.""It was very overwhelming and so I left the chamber to go and sit in the lobby. I missed the vote because of this."New Democrat Peter Julian could barely contain his outrage, saying he'd never seen such behaviour in his 12 years in the House.Trudeau issued an abject apology, even amid the catcalls and protests of the opposition benches, saying he was just trying to help the opposition whip get to his seat.He never intended to hurt anyone, Trudeau insisted."I took it upon myself to go and assist him forward, which was I now see unadvisable as a course of action," said Trudeau, who characterized his actions as "unacceptable.""I apologize for that unreservedly and I look for opportunities to make amends."What followed was a lengthy parade of indignant MPs getting up to express their outrage to the Speaker, describing how they'd never seen anything like it in all their years as politicians. At one point, Trudeau left to attend a photo-op with B.C. Premier Christy Clark and a reception for guests who were on hand for a different apology: Parliament saying sorry for the Komagata Maru incident off the B.C. coast in 1914.During the former event, Trudeau looked serious and shaken as he rushed through a statement of welcome directed at Clark. For her part, Clark said he never mentioned the incident.Tempers have been running high in the Commons all week as the government pushes through a motion to limit debate on its controversial assisted-dying legislation, Bill C-14. It was that motion the members were gathered to vote on before the confrontation took place.Speaker Geoff Regan could barely make himself heard as he tried to read the text of the motion. It was defeated by a margin of 172-137, although Brosseau wasn't able to register her vote.Conservative Peter Van Loan said the prime minister charged across the floor "with anger fierce in his eyes and face.""I've read about this stuff in history books from the 19th century," an incredulous Van Loan said. "I've never had it happen in my lifetime."Green party Leader Elizabeth May, whose seat in the House gave her a ringside seat for the encounter and subsequent arguments, called for calm at one point — and suggested that the NDP MPs may have been milling about on the floor in order to delay the vote."It was most unwise of the prime minister to attempt to move along the vote," May said."But the second contact with my friend (Brosseau), which is certainly the one that was the most emotional for the member involved, was clearly, from my perspective ... unintentional."She added: "He had not seen her behind him. That is the truth. Now you can like it or not like it."The Speaker concluded there was a prima facie case that Brosseau's privileges as an MP had been breached, which means the encounter will be examined by an all-party committee.

Pentagon: Chinese fighter jets in near collision with US aircraft-jason_thomson-Christian Science Monitor-May 19, 2016-YAHOONEWS

In the latest episode of the ongoing saga in the South China Sea, Pentagon officials said Wednesday that two Chinese fighter jets had carried out an “unsafe” intercept of a US reconnaissance plane. While China disputes the allegations, the disagreement is part of ongoing tensions in the region, as interested parties seek to find a balance between avoiding conflict and defending what they each regard as their legitimate rights. ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Turkey's Transport Minister Binali Yildirim emerged on Thursday as the likely new leader of the ruling AK Party and therefore the next prime minister, cementing President Tayyip Erdogan's hold on government as he seeks to extend his powers. Yildirim, 60, and a close ally of Erdogan for two decades, will be the sole candidate for the AKP leadership at a special party congress on Sunday, AKP spokesman Omer Celik told a news conference after a meeting of the party's executive board. Crash: Egypt A320 over Mediterranean on May 19th 2016, aircraft lost over Mediterranean, ELT signal picked up-By Simon Hradecky, created Thursday, May 19th 2016 03:35Z, last updated Thursday, May 19th 2016 12:46Z

An Egyptair Airbus A320-200, registration SU-GCC performing flight MS-804 (dep May 18th) from Paris Charles de Gaulle (France) to Cairo (Egypt) with 56 passengers and 10 crew, was enroute at FL370 over the Mediterranan Sea about 130nm north of Alexandria (Egypt) and about 210nm northnorthwest of Cairo when the transponder signals of the aircraft ceased at 02:33L (00:33Z). The aircraft is presumed crashed in the Mediterranean Sea.The airline reported at 05:00L (03:00Z), that flight MS-804, estimated to land in Cairo at 03:10L (01:10Z), is missing and so far has not landed at any airport in reach of the aircraft. Egyptair subsequently tweeted that the aircraft was enroute at FL370 about to enter Egyptian Airspace when radar contact with the aircraft was lost at 02:45L (00:45Z). A search and rescue operation has been launched. The airline further corrected initial statement of 59 passengers to 56 passengers actually on board of the aircraft. The commander had accumulated 6,275 hours with 2,101 hours on type, the first officer has accumulated 2,675 hours. The aircraft had been manufactured in 2003. The airline has opened hotlines for relatives at +202 25989320 (outside Egypt) and 080077770000 (landline in Egypt). At about 07:40L (05:40Z) Egyptair updated their statement saying, that the contact with the aircraft was lost 280km (151nm) from the Coast of Egypt at 02:30L (00:30Z). The crew comprised the captain, first officer, 5 cabin crew and 3 sky marshals. Amongst the passengers there were 30 Egyptians, 15 French, 2 Iraqis, 1 British, 1 Belgian, 1 Kuwaiti, 1 Saudi, 1 Sudanese, 1 Chadian, 1 Portugese, 1 Algerian and 1 Canadian.Greece's Civil Aviation Authority reported radar contact with the aircraft was lost about 2 minutes after the aircraft was handed off from Greek to Egyptian Air Traffic Control. The crew did not report any problems up to hand off. The CAA subsequently clarified, that the crew was talking to air traffic control in Greek when the aircraft entered the Greek control zone. When ATC attempted to hand the aircraft off to Egypt the crew did not respond, radar contact was lost 2 minutes after the first attempt to raise the crew for hand off, the aircraft was 7nm past mandatory reporting point KUMBI (N33.7139 E28.7500), boundary between Greek and Egyptian control zone.At 08:25L (06:25Z) Egypt Air reported that search and rescue have picked up an emergency locator transmitter (ELT) signal. Dawn in the area was at 04:26L.France is joining the search and rescue efforts dispatching ships and aircraft into the search area, which is already being scanned by Greek and Egypt aircraft and ships. At 10:15L (08:15Z) Airbus posted "Airbus regrets to confirm that an A320 operated by Egyptair was lost at around 02:30 am (Egypt local time) today over the Mediterranean sea. The aircraft was operating a scheduled service, Flight MS 804 from Paris, France to Cairo, Egypt. The aircraft involved, registered under SU-GCC was MSN (Manufacturer Serial Number) 2088 delivered to Egyptair from the production line in November 2003. The aircraft had accumulated approximately 48,000 flight hours. It was powered by IAE engines. At this time no further factual information is available."A good number of civilian ships in the area have, according to MarineTraffic, veered off their intended courses and are now steaming towards a common position at approximately N33.4 E29.7 approximately 30nm eastnortheast of the last ADS-B position. A first ship "Oceanus" has already reached that position and is nearly stationary there. At 12:30L (10:30Z) France's President Hollande announced that the aircraft has crashed while flying over the Mediterranean Sea in Egyptian Airspace. The responsible Paris states attorney has opened an investigation into the disappearance of the aircraft but cautioned, that a mechanical failure or other causes besides terrorism have not been ruled out at this point. No credible claims of downing the aircraft have been made so far.In a press conference Egypt's Civil Aviation Minister said, Egypt continues to call the aircraft "missing". The Government does not rule out any cause as of yet, neither mechanical failure nor terrorism.

Greece says crashed EgyptAir plane suddenly lost altitude-[Associated Press]-MAGGIE MICHAEL, DEREK GATOPOULOS and ANGELA CHARLTON-May 19, 2016-YAHOONEWS

CAIRO (AP) — An EgyptAir flight from Paris to Cairo with 66 passengers and crew on board crashed in the Mediterranean Sea off the Greek island of Crete early Thursday morning, Egyptian and Greek officials said.Greek defense minister Panos Kammenos said EgyptAir flight 804 made abrupt turns and suddenly lost altitude just before vanishing from radar at around 2.45 a.m. Egyptian time.Kammenos said the aircraft was 10-15 miles inside the Egyptian FIR and at an altitude of 37,000 feet. "It turned 90 degrees left and then a 360 degree turn toward the right, dropping from 38,000 to 15,000 feet and then it was lost at about 10,000 feet," he said.Egyptian Prime Minister Sherif Ismail said it was too early to say whether a technical problem or a terror attack caused the plane to crash. "We cannot rule anything out," he told reporters at Cairo airport.EgyptAir said the Airbus A320 vanished 10 miles (16 kilometers) after it entered Egyptian airspace, around 280 kilometers (175 miles) off Egypt's coastline north of the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria. Their account fits closely with an account from Konstantinos Lintzerakos, director of Greece Civil Aviation Authority. The airline said the Egyptian military had received an emergency signal from the aircraft, an apparent reference to an Emergency Locator Transmitter, or ELT, a battery powered device designed to automatically give out a signal in the event of a sudden loss of altitude or impact. The Egyptian military denied it had received a distress call and Egypt's state-run daily Al-Ahram quoted an airport official as saying the pilot did not send one. The newspaper did not identify the official. The absence of a distress call suggests that whatever sent the aircraft plummeting into the Mediterranean was both sudden and brief.Exploring the possibility that a terror attack brought down the aircraft, Egyptian security officials said they were running background checks on the passengers to see if any of them had links to extremists. In Paris, the city's prosecutor's office has opened an investigation into the incident. "No hypothesis is favored or ruled out at this stage," the prosecutor's office said in a statement. All Egyptian officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media. The head of Greece's air traffic controllers association, Serafeim Petrou, told The Associated Press that everything was operating normally prior to the plane's disappearance from radar.Egyptian military aircraft and navy ships were taking part in a search operation off Egypt's Mediterranean coast to locate the debris of the plane, which was carrying 56 passengers, including one child and two babies, and 10 crew members. The pilot had more than 6,000 flight hours.Greece also joined the search and rescue operation, officials at the Hellenic National Defense General Staff said.French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault offered to send military planes and boats to join the Egyptian search for wreckage."We are at the disposition of the Egyptian authorities with our military capacities, with our planes, our boats to help in the search for this plane," he said. He spoke after French President Francois Hollande held an emergency meeting at the Elysee Palace.Later, the French military said a Falcon surveillance jet monitoring the Mediterranean for migrants had been diverted to help search for the EgyptAir plane. Military spokesman Col. Gilles Jaron told The Associated Press that the jet is joining the Egypt-led search effort, and the French navy may send another plane and a ship to the zone.Hollande spoke with Egyptian president Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi on the phone and agreed to "closely cooperate to establish as soon as possible the circumstances" surrounding the incident, according to a statement issued in Paris. In Cairo, el-Sissi convened an emergency meeting of the National Security Council, the country's highest security body. The council includes the prime minister and the defense, foreign and interior ministers, in addition to the chiefs of the intelligence agencies. Those on board, according to EgyptAir, included 15 French passengers, 30 Egyptians, two Iraqis, one Briton, one Kuwaiti, one Saudi, one Sudanese, one Chadian, one Portuguese, one Belgian, one Algerian and one Canadian. Ayrault confirmed that 15 French citizens were on board.Around 15 relatives of passengers on board the missing flight arrived at Cairo airport Thursday morning. Airport authorities brought doctors to the scene after several distressed family members collapsed. In Paris, relatives of passengers on the EgyptAir flight started arriving at Charles de Gaulle Airport outside the French capital, where their loved ones were last seen alive.A man and a woman, identified by airport staff as relatives of the flight's passengers, sat at an information desk near the EgyptAir counter at Charles de Gaulle Airport's Terminal 1. The woman was sobbing, holding her face in a handkerchief. The pair were led away by police and airport staff and did not speak to gathered journalists. The Airbus A320 is a widely used twin-engine, single-aisle plane that operates on short and medium-haul routes. Nearly 4,000 A320s are currently in use around the world. The ubiquity of the A320 means the plane has been involved in several accidents over the years. The last deadly crash involving the plane was Germanwings Flight 9525, in which all 150 onboard died when one of the pilots intentionally crashed it in the French Alps.Airbus said the aircraft was delivered to EgyptAir in 2003 and had logged 48,000 flight hours before it "was lost" over the Mediterranean. The European plane-maker said in a statement Thursday that it had engines made by Swiss-based engine consortium IAE, and had the serial number 2088.An EgyptAir plane was hijacked and diverted to Cyprus in March. A man who admitted to the hijacking and is described by Cypriot authorities as "psychologically unstable" is in custody in Cyprus. The incident renewed security concerns at Egyptian airports after a Russian passenger plane crashed in Sinai last October, killing all 224 people on board. Moscow said it was brought down by an explosive device, and a local branch of the Islamic State has claimed responsibility for planting it.In 1999, EgyptAir Flight 990 crashed into the Atlantic near the Massachusetts island of Nantucket, killing all 217 people aboard. U.S. investigators filed a final report that concluded its co-pilot switched off the autopilot and pointed the Boeing 767 downward. Egyptian officials rejected the notion of suicide altogether, insisting some mechanical reason caused the crash.___Gatopoulos reported from Athens and Charlton from Paris. Associated press reporters Raphael Satter, Sylvie Corbet and Sylvie Crobet contributed to this report from Paris.

EgyptAir flight crashes in Mediterranean with 66 on board-[AFP]-Samer al-Atrush-May 19, 2016-YAHOONEWS

Cairo (AFP) - An EgyptAir flight from Paris to Cairo crashed into the Mediterranean on Thursday with 66 people on board prompting an investigation into whether it was mechanical failure or a bomb. There were no immediate reports of the discovery of any debris in the area of sea between the Greek islands and the Egyptian coast where the plane vanished from radar screens. But French President Francois Hollande confirmed that the plane had "crashed" and the Paris prosecutor's office said its accident department had opened an investigation. The plane fell 22,000 feet and swerved sharply in Egyptian airspace before it disappeared from radar screens, Greek Defence Minister Panos Kammenos told a news conference.Egypt and Greece both said they had dispatched aircraft and naval vessels on a search mission and they were expected to be joined by French teams.Fifteen French citizens were among the 26 foreign passengers on the EgyptAir flight, who also included a Briton and a Canadian. Both France and Egypt have come under attack by jihadists of the Islamic State group in the past year and Hollande promised a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the crash as suspicions swiftly focused on a bomb."We must ensure that we know everything on the causes of what happened. No hypothesis is ruled out or favoured," he said in a televised address."Whether it was an accident or another hypothesis that everyone has on their mind -- a terrorist hypothesis... at this stage we must focus on our solidarity with the families and the search for the causes of the catastrophe."IS has been waging a deadly insurgency against Egyptian security forces and last October claimed the bombing of a Russian airliner flying home holidaymakers from the Egyptian resort of Sharm El-Sheikh, which killed all 224 people on board.- No distress call -France earlier called a crisis meeting of top ministers as Prime Minister Manuel Valls said "no theory can be ruled out" to explain the plane's disappearance.EgyptAir said contact was lost with the flight about 280 kilometres (175 miles) north of the Egyptian coast.A Greek aviation source said the flight had disappeared from Greek radar at around 0029 GMT."It crashed around 130 nautical miles off the island of Karpathos," the source told AFP, referring to an island northeast of Crete.Greek civil aviation chief Constantinos Litzerakos said the pilot had mentioned no problem in the last communication before the plane disappeared."The flight controllers contacted the pilot (with the plane) at a height of 37,000 feet (near Athens)... he did not mention a problem," Litzerakos told Greece's Antenna TV."We tracked the entire process from the plane's entry (into Greek airspace) to its exit, it does not appear to deviate at all from the coordinates we gave," he said.Neither the Greek coastguard nor the navy could confirm reports that a passing ship had seen "a ball of fire in the sky".The civil aviation chief said if there had been an explosion, any debris would have scattered across a wide distance.EgyptAir Holding Company vice president Ahmed Adel also said there had been "no distress call" before the plane vanished.- France crisis meeting -Egyptian Prime Minister Sharif Ismail told reporters "we can't preclude or confirm anything yet," when asked if the flight could have been attacked.Hollande called his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and the leaders agreed to "cooperate closely" to establish what happened to the plane.Hollande also set up a crisis meeting of top ministers, including Valls, the foreign, defence and interior ministers, according to sources close to his office. The passengers also included two Iraqis and one citizen from each of Algeria, Belgium, Chad, Portugal, Saudi Arabia and Sudan, as well as 30 Egyptians, the airline said. They included a boy and two babies.Seven crew members and three security men were also on board.EgyptAir said the plane had been manufactured in 2003. Airbus said it had clocked up 48,000 flight hours.EgyptAir hit the headlines in March when a flight from the Egyptian coastal city of Alexandria to Cairo was hijacked and forced to divert to Cyprus, where the "unstable" hijacker demanded to see his ex-wife.He had claimed he was wearing an explosive vest, which turned out to be fake, and handed himself in within hours after freeing the passengers and crew.Last October, foreign governments issued travel warnings for Egypt and demanded review of security at its airports after the Islamic State group downed the Russian airliner with what it said was a bomb concealed in a soda can that had been smuggled into the hold. The disappearance of the EgyptAir jet comes more than two years after the start of one of the most enduring mysteries in aviation history.Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 vanished on March 8, 2014 en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 passengers and crew on board, mostly Chinese and Malaysians.Authorities believe the Boeing 777 detoured to the remote southern Indian Ocean and then plunged into the water.

OZONE DEPLETION JUDGEMENT ON THE EARTH DUE TO SIN

ISAIAH 30:26-27
26 Moreover the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold,(7X OR 7-DEGREES HOTTER) as the light of seven days, in the day that the LORD bindeth up the breach of his people,(ISRAEL) and healeth the stroke of their wound.
27 Behold, the name of the LORD cometh from far, burning with his anger, and the burden thereof is heavy: his lips are full of indignation, and his tongue as a devouring fire:

MATTHEW 24:21-22,29
21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.
22 And except those days should be shortened,(DAY LIGHT HOURS SHORTENED) there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake (ISRAELS SAKE) those days shall be shortened (Daylight hours shortened)(THE ASTEROID HITS EARTH HERE)
29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

REVELATION 16:7-9
7 And I heard another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are thy judgments.
8 And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire.
9 And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory.

FIRES AND EXPLOSIONS

REVELATION 8:7
7 The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up.

Wind, low humidity, help northern Alberta wildfire make big one-day jump-[The Canadian Press]-May 18, 2016-YAHOONEWS

FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. - There has been a dramatic increase in the size of a northern Alberta wildfire that has already destroyed hundreds of structures in Fort McMurray and is now licking close to the boundary with Saskatchewan. An overnight report from Alberta Sustainable Resource Development says the blaze has now covered more than 4,200 square kilometres. As of noon Tuesday, the flames had scorched more than 3,500 square kilometres.Officials have previously said that a 655-unit oilsands work camp north of Fort McMurray was destroyed by the fire, and that other camps in the area remain at risk.Saskatchewan authorities say the fire is now about five kilometres or less from the provincial boundary and will likely keep burning that way, although the nearest community is about 40 kilometres away. The weather in the region remains dry and windy, but Environment Canada is forecasting four days of rain.

Fort McMurray teen rides horse out from wildfire evacuation-[CBC]-May 17, 2016-YAHOONEWS

A teenager managed to get her beloved horse to safety as the wildfires spread towards Fort McMurray earlier this month the only way possible: under saddle, by the side of the highway."It was really something. My mind was full of different emotions, I didn't really know what was going on — and just the fact of having to get out, and there was no turning back," recalled Jada Polem, a Grade 11 student at Holy Trinity Catholic High School. On May 3, as her family was ordered to evacuate with tens of thousands of others, Polem and her parents worried about what to do with their three horses."We knew that we were going to have a problem, because we only have a two-horse trailer," she said, adding Mya, her quarter-horse, was the most well-trained of the bunch."When we were getting ready to load up, Dad was like, 'put the saddle on, you're going to have to take her out.' I was like, well, i guess that's my only way out," Polem told CBC Radio's Corner Brook Morning Show.-Ride to safety-As her parents trailered the other horses, Polem rode alongside the traffic, trying to stay calm."We definitely got a lot of looks — everyone was looking, like 'holy!'" she said of the admittedly unusual sight, even in the midst of an unprecedented evacuation. As the heat from the flames blazed around them, the equine convoy made it to a safe zone near the city's wastewater treatment plant."We got down and we untacked them, because it was 30 degree weather, so they were cooking," said Polem. As the fires continued to spread, the Polems and their horses once again moved out of danger and arranged for a friend to trailer all three horses to safety south, where they are now staying on a farm outside Edmonton.-'Home' in Newfoundland-Polem is now not only separated from her horses, but also her parents. After the evacuation, the family decided that Jada would head to her parents' hometown of Corner Brook to finish off the school year, while her father continued to work in Fort McMurray and her mother stayed near Edmonton. The family spends summers in Corner Brook each year, and it seemed a natural fit."A lot of friends of mine were going to Edmonton for schooling, but I'd rather go to Newfoundland. It feels more like home. I'd rather be home than be in another new environment," said Polem. She's settling in and plans to write exams in June, although with the fires continuing to threaten Fort McMurray, what will happen next school year remains uncertain."We'll either wait it out down here and see when we can go back, or figure out the plan of action for September."

Disaster levy? Wildfires spark renewed calls for Alberta consumption tax-[CBC]-May 18, 2016-YAHOONEWS

With wildfires burning across Alberta and Fort McMurray preparing for a massive rebuild, the province faces billions in new spending - for everything from mental health counselling to loaded debit cards -  that will take a heavy toll on government finances. In some circles, the extraordinary events of this hot, dry spring have underscored the need for a long-term reliable revenue source."It would be helpful not for today, but for tomorrow and for the future," said Ergete Ferete, associate professor of economics at MacEwan University.Ferete is one of 19 prominent academics who wrote a letter to the Edmonton Journal in February that called on the provincial government to adopt a harmonized sales tax. Though the idea has long been considered "political suicide" for any party that adopts it, Ferete said the conversation is one that needs to happen, especially now."Down the road, how can we have a stable revenue source so that we can be prepared for this kind of unforeseen and unexpected natural disaster?" he asked. "And more importantly, to defend our public services in a stable and reliable way."Another signatory to the letter takes the idea a step further, suggesting the provincial government should leverage the goodwill it has accumulated during its handling of the wildfires.Ricardo Acuna from the Parkland Institute said now might just be the right time to broach the normally taboo political subject.-'Call it a disaster levy'-"Now is a good time to leverage that conversation," said Acuna, who believes the public supports the way public services have been dispatched during the crisis."Call it a disaster levy, or something like that," he said. "I think Albertans need to acknowledge that we do have an existing shortfall already, and you can't get away from calling that a sales tax, or revision to the income tax."The shutdown of some oilsands operations due to the wildfires will rob the provincial government of approximately $1.8 million a day from bitumen royalty revenues, according to Alberta Treasury and Finance. That represents just over half of the projected $3.1 million a day take, based on figures from a year ago, a substantial amount of revenue never to be recouped."We have budget lines in place to address emergencies," said Alberta Finance Minister Joe Ceci. "And processes in place through the year where we can update our fiscal plan. So I think we'll be OK on that regard."But Ceci admitted he's keeping his eye on just how credit rating agencies will view the mounting costs and lack of a specific debt repayment plan.Even with the escalating costs and no firm timeline for when the deficit and debt will be paid off, the credit rating agency Moody's cut the Alberta government some slack last week. Moody's is one of three agencies that downgraded Alberta's blue ribbon AAA rating following the recent provincial budget. But the agency said it believes the fires won't lead to a further downgrade.-Fires to cut 0.33 % from GDP-The latest prediction from the Conference Board of Canada estimates the fire will translate into a 0.33 per cent loss to Alberta's projected GDP for 2016, and just a 0.06 per cent share for the Canadian economy. But the conference board also believes the economy will benefit from a bit of an economic bump when oil production resumes, and rebuilding of Fort McMurray gets underway.Albertans will get a better idea of how the costs add up by the end of  August, when the first-quarter fiscal update is released. That's also when wildfires should be winding down and the hard numbers for the costs start piling up. There's no doubt those numbers will be grim."The natural disasters we are facing of course are unprecedented," said Ferete. "And the magnitude and the financial need to recover from this kind of natural disaster will be huge for the province, for individuals, for businesses. The problem is, this occurs at a time when governments are running huge deficits."Ferete believes wildfire costs will push Alberta deeper into deficit, and without a predictable revenue source it will be even harder to recover.'There is no other way'-"I think many people have forecast this will have a significant  impact on Alberta's GDP for a long period of time, and governments will have to spend lots of money," he said. "It will have a negative impact on our economy. There is no other way, the government has to step in and help."Ricardo Acuna from the Pembina Institute said Alberta has been operating "on a prayer for higher oil prices" for the past two decades."We see what happens when that doesn't come through," he said. "Add to that low oil prices, plus these kinds of disasters will really wreak havoc with not just Alberta's ability to fund services but also our economy as a whole."But the official opposition has a different take on the situation.Wildrose MLA Derek Fildebrandt said the provincial government needs to accurately reflect the costs of natural disasters in the budget."The last thing Alberta needs right now is another tax," said Fildebrandt. "Especially when we're going through a severe recession with little sign of letting up."As Alberta stares down a $10.4-billion deficit, Premier Rachel Notley said only last month that discussion of a provincial or harmonized sales tax won't happen before the next provincial election. But she acknowledged that discussion needs to happen."In the long-term, is this a conversation we need to have?" Notley said during an interview with CBC News. "I think it is, but not right now."

13  And ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I have opened your graves, O my people, and brought you up out of your graves,
14  And shall put my spirit in you, and ye shall live, and I shall place you in your own land: then shall ye know that I the LORD have spoken it, and performed it, saith the LORD.

Kerry in Cairo for talks on Egypt’s politics, Mideast peace-US secretary of state arrives a day after Egyptian president offered to mediate renewed Israeli-Palestinian peace talks-By Matthew Lee May 18, 2016, 6:37 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

CAIRO (AP) — US Secretary of State John Kerry held talks Wednesday with Egyptian officials on the country’s political situation and to explore Egypt’s ideas for supporting a new Israeli-Palestinian peace bid.Kerry arrived in Cairo a day after Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi offered support for a French initiative to revive the peace process and said he was willing to serve as a mediator.US officials traveling with Kerry said he spoke by telephone with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday and wanted hear more from Sissi about his plans.Sissi said Tuesday that Egypt’s relations with Israel, rooted in a landmark 1979 peace treaty, can only be “warmer” if the Jewish state reached a settlement with the Palestinians. He pledged that Egypt would “make every effort” toward a solution. He also declared his support for a French proposal to hold a Mideast peace conference, an idea already rejected by Israel. The Egyptian leader cited that offer, along with US efforts, a 2002 Arab peace plan and the international Mideast peace quartet as possible avenues to such a settlement.Addressing Israelis and their government, Sissi said there was a “real opportunity” for peacemaking although some in Israel did not think peace is now necessary given the turmoil in the region. An Israeli-Palestinian deal, he said, would “give safety and stability to both sides. If this is achieved, we will enter a new phase that perhaps no one can imagine now.”In a statement, Netanyahu welcomed Sissi’s “willingness to invest every effort to advance a future of peace and security between us and the Palestinians” and said Israel was ready to join Egypt and other Arab states in “advancing the peace process and stability in the region.”But Netanyahu has rejected the French initiative, saying direct negotiations were the only way to resolve the conflict with the Palestinians. He is on record as saying the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative has some positive aspects but could not be the basis for negotiations. The Arab peace plan offers Israel full recognition by Arab states in exchange for Israel’s withdrawal from territory it captured in the 1967 Middle East war.In addition to discussing the peace process, Kerry planned to express concerns about human rights, including Egypt’s crackdowns on dissent, free speech and freedom of assembly, according to US officials.

Israel successfully tests shipborne Iron Dome missile interceptor-IDF unveils new weapon that can block short-range ballistic missiles while aboard a moving ship, expected to protect offshore rigs and other assets-By AFP and Raoul Wootliff May 18, 2016, 7:01 pm-the times of israel

Israel has successfully tested a maritime missile interception system that can shoot down short-range missiles, dubbing it the “Iron Dome of the Sea,” the navy announced on Wednesday. The Tamir-Adir system, which the IDF said can shoot down short-range rockets similar to those fired from Gaza, successfully destroyed “several” missiles, Col. Ariel Shir, head of operational systems in the navy, said.Shir said that during tests carried out two weeks ago, a battery mounted to a ship shot down every one of a salvo of short-range ballistic rockets fired from the shore. He said the test “proved the Israeli navy’s ability to protect Israel’s strategic assets at sea against short-range strategic rockets.”A video provided by the army showed a rocket launcher installed on a ship firing at targets in the sky and later intercepting a missile.During the 2014 Gaza war, Israel deployed its Iron Dome system on land to shoot down rockets fired by Hamas and other terror groups across the border, calling the system a game-changer.The Tamir Adir system uses technology developed for Iron Dome but adjusted for the operational needs of a moving vessel. The system was in development for several years, but was only unveiled to the public Wednesday. The battery is designed to be placed on a moving ship traveling up to cruise speed and will be used to protect strategic assets, such as natural gas rigs, in Israel’s territorial waters.Included in Israel’s sea assets is a major offshore gas rig around 16 nautical miles from Gaza which the Hamas terror group has previously targeted unsuccessfully.Any damage to the rig or other rigs under development could be hugely damaging to the Israeli economy, since it provides large amounts of the country’s energy needs and is expected to turn Israel into a gas exporter.

Netanyahu 'close to agreeing' Israel unity government-[AFP]-May 18, 2016-YAHOONEWS

Jerusalem (AFP) - Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is close to agreeing a unity government with the main opposition leader, Israeli media said Wednesday, in a move that could help revive peace talks with the Palestinians. The head of the rightwing Likud has reportedly been engaged in intense negotiations with Labour Party chief Isaac Herzog in recent weeks in a bid to form a government of national unity.Herzog, whose party forms the Zionist Union along with the centrist Hatnuah, could present a possible coalition agreement to his party in the coming days, the reports said. His entry into the government would be closely watched by the international community for its potential impact on the moribund peace process with the Palestinians. An advocate of an independent Palestinian state, Herzog has been touted as a potential foreign minister -- a role currently assumed by Netanyahu in a temporary capacity on top of his role as premier.Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Tuesday urged Israelis and Palestinians to take historic steps to achieve peace, comments which some analysts interpreted as an attempt to boost the idea of Herzog joining the government. If a national unity government is formed Netanyahu and Herzog could visit Egypt to launch a new peace initiative under the auspices of the Egyptian president, the Jerusalem Post cited anonymous officials from both parties as saying. But resistance to the coalition is strong within both camps and commentators stressed an agreement was far from certain.Herzog's main rival in the Labour Party, Shelly Yachimovich, described the possible alliance as a "blood wedding".She promised on her Facebook page to fight for "justice, clean government, ideology, and the honour of the party".Within Likud, several members said they would prefer an alliance with the nationalist party Israel Beiteinu rather than Labour. The Zionist Union was formed in the run-up to the 2015 election in a bid to unseat Netanyahu but failed, with the premier later forming one of the most rightwing governments in Israel's history. However Netanyahu's coalition has just a one seat majority in parliament and he would benefit from wider backing -- with members of the coalition currently able to hold him to ransom.

Divers find huge trove of statues, coins in 1,600-year-old shipwreck-In ‘biggest find in 30 years,’ archaeologists rescue rare bronze figures of gods, animals, that sank off Caesarea along with ship carrying metal for recycling-By Stuart Winer May 16, 2016, 4:01 pm-the times of israel

Two recreational divers discovered a 1,600 year-old shipwreck on the seabed off the coast of Israel, leading to a salvage operation which uncovered one of the largest caches of marine artifacts ever found, antiquities officials revealed Monday. The hoard was discovered off the coast of Caesarea, a major Roman-era seaport, sometime last month, the Israel Antiques Authority said in a statement, calling the find the most extensive underwater discovery in 30 years.Pieces brought to the surface included a bronze lamp depicting the image of the sun god Sol, a figurine of the moon goddess Luna, a lamp in the image of the head of an African slave, fragments of three life-size bronze cast statues, objects fashioned in the shape of animals such as a whale, and a bronze faucet in the form of a wild boar with a swan on its head, the IAA said.Fragment of jars the crew had used to store drinking water were also found.Experts believe the finds came from a large merchant ship carrying metal slated for reuse when it ran into a storm near the harbor and smashed into the seawall and rocks.“A preliminary study of the iron anchors suggests there was an attempt to stop the drifting vessel before it reached shore by casting anchors into the sea; however, these broke – evidence of the power of the waves and the wind which the ship was caught up in,” the statement said.Ran Feinstein and Ofer Ra‘anan of Ra’anana were diving at the site of the ancient harbor in the Caesarea National Park before the recent Passover holiday in April when they noticed that shifting sand had exposed the remains of a ship and its contents. The pair immediately contacted the IAA, which sent down archaeologists to take a look.To their delight, the team spotted “iron anchors, remains of wooden anchors and items that were used in the construction and running of the sailing vessel,” the authority said.Feinstein and Ra‘anan will be Awarded a Certificate of Appreciation by the IAA and given a personal tour of the IAA’s storerooms as a reward for their good citizenry.Jacob Sharvit, director of the Marine Archaeology Unit of the Israel Antiquities Authority, and Dror Planer, deputy director of the unit, dated the ship to sometime during the Late Roman Period or 3rd-4th century CE.In the weeks following the discovery by Ra‘anan and Feinstein, IAA divers along with volunteers carried out an underwater salvage survey and by using specialized equipment were able to find and recover many items from the cargo. The bronze statues are particularly rare; slated to be melted down, they instead sank and were preserved by the seawater.“In the many marine excavations that have been carried out in Caesarea only very small number of bronze statues have been found, whereas in the current cargo a wealth of spectacular statues were found that were in the city and were removed from it by way of sea. The sand protected the statues; consequently they are in an amazing state of preservation – as though they were cast yesterday rather than 1,600 years ago,” the IAA said. Also discovered were two lumps, together weighing 20 kilograms, composed of thousands of coins that had retained the shape of the long disintegrated pottery vessel in which they were being transported.“The coins that were discovered bear the image of the emperor Constantine who ruled the Western Roman Empire (312–324 CE) and was later known as Constantine the Great, ruler of the Roman Empire (324–337 CE), and of Licinius, an emperor who ruled the eastern part of the Roman Empire and was a rival of Constantine, until his downfall in a battle that was waged between the two rulers,” the IAA said.Last year a treasure trove of Fatimid gold coins was found in the sea at Caesarea.

Zionist Union MKs call for Herzog’s head over coalition talks debacle-At least 2 Labor Party members tell opposition leader to step down after he freezes negotiations to join the government-By Raoul Wootliff May 18, 2016, 5:13 pm-the times of israel

Knesset Members from the Zionist Union called on party leader Isaac Herzog to resign Wednesday, as the opposition leader was strafed by party members over his unpopular bid to join the governing coalition, which he froze earlier in the day.Herzog had seemed poised to bring his Zionist Union faction into the coalition despite fierce opposition from most of his own party’s lawmakers, but he aborted talks Wednesday afternoon after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced parallel negotiations with the right-wing Yisrael Beytenu party, led by Avigdor Liberman.Zionist Union MK Stav Shaffir wrote on Facebook that Herzog’s efforts to take Zionist Union into a unity government led by Netanyahu were self-serving and “unforgivable.”“It is now clear that Bibi used Herzog in order to bring Liberman into the government,” Shafir wrote, using the prime minister’s nickname. “A leader who cannot differentiate between the Bibi of a peace agreement and the Bibi who gives the defense portfolio to Liberman is not worthy to be head of the Labor Party.”Colleague Mickey Rosenthal also demanded Herzog’s resignation, saying that the party leader has lost the trust of the voters.“The party will not be able to recover if you do not hand over the keys. You have lost the confidence of the electorate,” he wrote on Twitter. In announcing his decision to freeze talks, Herzog said he would not continue the negotiations so long as Yisrael Beytenu’s inclusion in the coalition was on the table.“Until Netanyahu decides where he is going, we will not conduct parallel negotiations,” announced Herzog, insisting that Zionist Union would not serve in the coalition together with Liberman. “If Netanyahu wants to bring Liberman into the government, then let him do it. We will take them apart from the opposition.”Netanyahu and Liberman were slated to meet at 4 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. There was no immediate word on the results of the meeting, but several Hebrew websites carried an unsourced report that Netanyahu had told Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon he would have to cede his post, likely to make room for Liberman. There was no confirmation of the report. Sources close to the prime minister said, however, that the meetings with Liberman did not “close the door to the Labor party.”Herzog’s decision to engage Netanyahu in coalition talks had sparked a wide backlash within the party over the past several weeks, and attacks on the party leader grew louder following his announcement those talks would end.MK Shelly Yachimovich, who preceded Herzog as the head of the Labor Party — which is the senior of the two constituents of the Zionist Union faction — claimed victory in her campaign to prevent the party from joining Netanyahu’s government.“We won,” Yachimovich wrote on Facebook, in a post accompanied by an image of a falling man used in the opening credits of the TV show “Mad Men.” “But God, what a disgrace! On the one hand I have a tremendous sense of relief that we succeeded, by joining forces, in stopping the disgrace of crawling into the government. On the other hand I admit that I am really angry. How far could this ongoing political suicide be taken?”Liberman held a press conference Wednesday morning denying that Netanyahu, who has been steeped in marathon coalition negotiations with Herzog, ever directly extended an offer to his party to join the government, and said he would consider such a move if his demands were met.“I heard repeatedly in the media that we received such-and-such offers,” said Liberman, adding that “we didn’t hear anything through official [channels].”“We do not rule out — and have never ruled out — entering the government under certain conditions,” he continued. “There is no personal issue, and all the personal matters are irrelevant. If our main issues are addressed, we have what to talk about.”Liberman’s party was demanding the defense portfolio, support for the death penalty for convicted terrorists, and efforts to resolve the pension crisis for Israelis from the former Soviet Union, according to reports. His ultra-nationalist party is the only right-wing faction in the opposition, which is led by the Zionist Union and includes the Joint (Arab) List. Netanyahu commands a 61-member coalition in the 120-seat Knesset, meaning the departure of any members could compromise his wafer-thin majority.Liberman and Netanyahu ran on the same list in the 2013 elections, but had a public falling out in 2014 over the prime minister’s handling of the war in Gaza.

Belgian lawmakers nominate jailed Palestinian Barghouti for Nobel-Members of Belgium’s Senate and House say terrorist serving 5 life sentences for murder holds key to peace in the region-By Dov Lieber May 18, 2016, 5:33 pm-the times of israel

Belgium lawmakers from across the political spectrum nominated jailed Fatah leader Marwan Barghouti for the Nobel Peace Prize, Palestinian media reported on Wednesday.Barghouti is currently serving five life sentences in an Israeli jail for his role in murderous terror attacks during the Second Intifada in the early 2000s.Palestinian activists have been campaigning for his nomination for a Nobel since April.Lawmakers from both the Belgian Senate and House of Representatives penned a letter to the Nobel nominating committee praising Barghouti as a peace activist and key to future talks between Israel and the Palestinians.“He is an important actor for the future of a region more fragmented than ever,” the letter reads, according to the Palestine News Network. “Peace requires the freedom of Marwan Barghouti and of the political prisoners, and more generally the freedom of the Palestinian people living for decades under occupation.”The letter also claims granting Barghouti the prestigious prize would help bring about the elusive two-state solution and “resurrect the indispensable hope to get out of the current impasse.”Palestinian rights groups, lawmakers and officials started a global campaign to nominate Barghouti for the peace prize in April. The Belgians have become the first Europeans to nominate Barghouti for the prize. According to PNN, the Arab Parliament and former Nobel Peace Prize winner Argentine Adolfo Perez Esquivel have also backed the Israeli prisoner.Barghouti is the former leader of the Tanzim armed wing of Fatah and was convicted by Israel of being the founder of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, another Fatah terror group. He was convicted in 2004 on five counts of murder and one attempted murder, and was implicated in and held responsible for four other terror attacks.Barghouti has remained politically active from behind bars, and is often touted as one of a few likely successors to the 82-year-old Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.A recent poll by the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research found that if Palestinian presidential elections were to take place, Barghouti would top both Abbas and the Hamas candidate, Ismail Haniyeh.Barghouti is seen as a unifying symbol in the divisive world of Palestinian politics, which is split between Hamas, Fatah and several smaller factions. He is also favored by some in Israel’s left as a possible successor to Abbas for his support of a two-state solution and his supposed renouncement of violence. He is also viewed as a legitimate political player with enough credibility in the Palestinian street to see a peace deal through. Were Barghouti to win the prize, he would become the second Palestinian leader thought to be responsible by the Israeli government for terrorism to become a Nobel Peace Laureate. The late Yasser Arafat, the former head of the Palestinian Authority who died in 2004, won the prize alongside former Israeli prime ministers Shimon Peres and the late Yitzhak Rabin for their joint efforts in the 1993 Oslo Peace Accords.Arafat is seen by many in Israel as an unreformed terrorist who doomed the 2000 Camp David peace talks and orchestrated the suicide bombing onslaught of the Second Intifada that followed.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

Who’s your daddy? Conference traces Jewish DNA back to Holy Land-Founders of this year’s IAJGS forum in Seattle, WA, promise even newcomers will geek out about discovering their genetic history-By Janis Siegel May 17, 2016, 12:59 am-the times of israel

SEATTLE — If you’ve ever wondered how Jews got to Finland, Scotland or New Zealand, there’s a speaker who can answer that question at this summer’s International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies conference in Seattle, Washington. The six-day event with 325 venues, a Jewish film festival, and a new track — Genealogy for Educators — will spark your curiosity and help you on your genealogical journey, whether you’re sleuthing for ancestors or sending your DNA by mail hoping for a match.Last year’s conference was held in Jerusalem, and though organizers can’t promise such a rain-free experience this August in the often-overcast Pacific Northwest, they do warn that once you dabble in this ever-expanding science, in any case you won’t want to leave the building.“People have used the word obsession and they’re not far off,” said conference co-chair and senior research manager for Salt Lake City-based Ancestry Pro Genealogists, Dr. Janette Silverman.“It’s costly, for sure — and those TV shows are highly addictive — but genealogical research places our family in the saga of their history and times. If we can find something that speaks to us, we can make the history personal,” said Silverman. This year’s conference features a global mix of researchers from groups like the Jewish Records Indexing in Poland, the Lithuanian State Historical Archives, the Center for Jewish History, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, and The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee Archives. Each will bring the latest research on Jewish migration to and from Europe, the Sephardic Jewish experience in America and into the American West, the Jews in South America, Australia, and South Africa, and the Jews’ return to Israel.Devin Naar, the Sephardic Studies program chair at the University of Washington in Seattle, will deliver the keynote address, “Sephardic Family History as Jewish Family History.”Conference co-chair Silverman, a self-described hater of history class throughout high school, has since uncovered links to more than 15,000 family members tracing back to 15th Century Europe.“One of the things that motivate me is the people that died in the Holocaust,” said Silverman, who teaches classes on how to research using online archives. “Part of what I do gives them life and helps keep their names alive.”-‘It doesn’t matter whether you’re Ashkenazi or Sephardi, you look the same on the Y chromosome’-Whether you start with Internet databases like JewishGen.org, Genealogy.org.il, or Ancestry.com — or whether you decide to use a DNA test — most genealogists would probably agree: just get started. For around $100, an autosomal DNA test kit will analyze one of 22 chromosomes — minus the sex chromosomes — and can find relatives that are related to your great, great, great grandparents. For roughly $200, another DNA test can uncover mitochondrial DNA or mtDNA which is passed down virtually unaltered from mother to daughter. And for a few hundred dollars, more or less, a Y-DNA test can analyze the male-inherited Y chromosome passed down nearly unchanged from father to son.“I think everyone should buy the autosomal test because autosomal DNA matches you up, very reliably, against an aunt-uncle, niece-nephew, half siblings, first, second, and generally, third cousins, very well,” said Bennett Greenspan, a conference speaker, entrepreneur and an admitted life-long evangelist for Jewish genealogy.Greenspan founded Family Tree DNA in 2000. The company is one of the most recognized non-medical DNA testers in the world.Greenspan will be presenting several sessions at the IAJGS conference including “DNA and The Jewish People,” which, he said, is guaranteed to provoke conversation. To date, Greenspan has amassed the male-inherited Y-DNA profiles of nearly 15,000 Jewish men in his database, reaching what genealogists call “critical mass.”These numbers of Jewish men allowed Greenspan to compare the genetic signatures found in Middle Eastern populations with those from European populations.Greenspan found that Ashkenazi and Sephardi Jews and Muslim Arabs are a nearly perfect genetic match and he hypothesizes that both, quite likely, originated from the same tribe, long ago, in the Middle East.“The Jews are from the Middle East and it doesn’t matter whether you’re Ashkenazi or Sephardi, you look the same on the Y chromosome,” said Greenspan. “There is almost no difference between Ashkenazim, Sephardim, and Muslim Arabs.-‘It’s forcing the Arabs to understand that we are from the Middle East as well and that we are not moving to a place that we never were’-“It’s forcing the Arabs to understand that we are from the Middle East as well and that we are not moving to a place that we never were,” said Greenspan. The maternal or mitochondrial DNA is not nearly as simple or as accurate as the male Y-DNA, said Greenspan, because Jewish women were often sent to other countries as brides for single Jewish men or non-Jewish women were converted in order to marry the Jewish bachelors in that land.“I think every man should do a Y chromosome [test] because it’s clear and unambiguous,” said Greenspan, who is eager to compile a census of the Jewish people for his next project.“Either you match someone with your same last name, which means you’re related to them, or you do not match someone with your same last name and the reason is you’re not related to them,” said Greenspan.Still, for IAJGS 2016 conference co-chair Phyllis Grossman, a retired publisher and another genealogy devotee who caught the research bug in 1995, there’s no substitute for one-on-one oral histories.Finding a deed, a passport, or a long lost relative from a town renamed over time to suit the language of the conquering army can tell you a lot.“DNA by itself won’t do anything,” said Grossman. “You really have to do the research. Usually the very first step is to talk to your oldest relatives. Start with yourself, then start working backwards, one generation at a time.”Grossman is on the board of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Washington State, the host of this year’s conference. Her search for family members led her to Ukraine three times where she eventually found them in the town of Trochenbrod, which was the subject of the 2005 movie, “Everything is Illuminated.”“Find out what people know, what they remember,” said Grossman. “You don’t want just names and dates, but the stories. You want to fill in the stories about who they were and how they lived.”
