Be he a god or a devil, we will accept him.And today, sadly, the world is indeed ready for such a man.

MP had also compared Israelis to Hitler, posted pro-Hamas tweets-UK Labour suspends MP who wanted Israel dismantled-Naz Shah apologizes in Parliament for Facebook post urging Israel be ‘relocated’ to the US; Corbyn suspends her from party after earlier standing by her; Cameron calls it ‘extraordinary’ she wasn’t suspended earlier-By Times of Israel staff and JTA April 27, 2016, 6:25 pm

Britain’s opposition Labour Party on Wednesday suspended an MP who called for the dismantling of Israel, and ordered an investigation into her conduct.Labour’s leader Jeremy Corbyn, who is facing a mounting crisis over anti-Semitism within Labour, acted against Naz Shah after initially standing by her. Prime Minister David Cameron had said earlier on Wednesday that it was “extraordinary” that Shah had not been suspended. “Pending investigation, she is unable to take part in any party activity,” Labour said in a statement. Also Wednesday, fellow Labour MP Wes Streeting told The Times of Israel in an interview that his party’s response to anti-Semitism has thus far been “flat-footed and ineffective” and that “now there is media scrutiny in light of Jeremy Corbyn’s election. It’s a bit like lifting up a stone and having insects crawl out from under it.”Battling the storm over her stance on Israel, Shah on Wednesday afternoon issued a personal apology in the House of Commons for her remarks, which she stressed she had made before she became an MP, and vowed to build better relations with Jews and all others. “I hope you will allow me to say that I fully acknowledge that I have made a mistake and I wholeheartedly apologize to this house for the words I used before I became a member,” said Shah. “I accept and understand that the words I used caused upset and hurt to the Jewish community and I deeply regret that. Anti-semitism is racism, full stop. As an MP I will do everything in my power to build relations between Muslims, Jews and people of different faiths and none.”But Corbyn, having initially accepted her apology, suspended her a short time later. Cameron had called it “quite extraordinary” that Labour had not suspended Shah. The Guardian quoted an aide to the prime minister saying, “If the Labour party had a shred of decency she would be immediately suspended … Jeremy Corbyn should be ashamed of himself.”A senior Labour MP, Lisa Nandy, had publicly urged that Shah be suspended. Labour should “suspend anybody who makes antisemitic comments, in line with our policy, and investigate it,” said Nandy. But Corbyn initially said Shah had “issued a fulsome apology,” which he accepted. “She does not hold these views and accepts she was completely wrong to have made these posts,” Corbyn said. His spokesman, while acknowledging her comments had been anti-Semitic, said the MP had “shocked herself” and did not mean what she said, and therefore she could not be described as anti-Semitic, the Guardian reported.Earlier Wednesday, leading Conservative MP Sir Eric Pickles, who also serves as Britain’s special envoy for post-Holocaust issues, demanded that Shah be booted from a parliamentary panel that is investigating the rise of anti-Semitism in the UK. The only contact Shah should have with the Home Affairs Select Committee looking into anti-Semitism, said Pickles, should be as a witness testifying before it.That call was echoed by Labour MP Kate Hoey, who said Shah should quit the panel “right away.”Shah on Tuesday had resigned her senior position as an aide to the shadow chancellor. Also Tuesday, the Guido Fawkes website reported a second Facebook post in which Shah had compared Israelis to Hitler. It later posted a series of her pro-Hamas tweets. In an apology published by London’s Jewish News, Shah said: “I understand that referring to Israel and Hitler as I did is deeply offensive to Jewish people for which I apologise.”On Wednesday, reports emerged that Shah employed an aide who posted anti-Semitic tweets, called Israel a genocidal, terror state, and blogged that Russian Orthodox Jews are involved in the sex-trafficking trade and that many ultra-Orthodox Jews are regular clients of brothels.Shah’s Facebook post was publicized on Monday, though it was originally shared online by Shah in 2014. It drew angry responses from Jewish community leaders, who called for an “urgent” clarification.Shah, a lawmaker from Bradford West, located in Yorkshire in northern England, had shared a post of a graphic in which a small silhouette of the map of Israel is laid inside the map of the United States under a headline which reads “Solution for Israel-Palestine Conflict – Relocate Israel into United States.”The graphic adds that: “America has plenty of land to accommodate a 51st state”; “the transportation cost will be less than 3 years of defense spending,” and “Palestinians will get their land and life back.” It also says that: “Middle East will again be peaceful without foreign interference;” and “Oil prices will go down, inflation will go down, whole world will be happy.”Shah, who is Muslim, added a comment: “Problem solved and save u bank charges for 3 billion pounds you transfer yearly.”The post was shared in 2014, before Shah was elected to Parliament. It was first publicized on Monday on the Guido Fawkes British politics website. All of Shah’s Facebook posts from 2014 have since been deleted.Shah released a statement Tuesday which said: “This post from two years ago was made before I was an MP, does not reflect my views and I apologize for any offense it has caused.”She also posted an apology on Twitter in which she announced she was stepping down from her position as parliamentary private secretary (PPS) to John McDonnell.I am truly sorry and I will be putting out a more detailed explanation later. pic.twitter.com/x74FDKNCJE— Naz Shah MP (@NazShahBfd) April 26, 2016-“Naz Shah’s comments about relocating Israelis to the United States are simply appalling,” said a Board of Deputies of British Jews spokesperson. “The Board of Deputies of British Jews has sought an urgent meeting for clarification of her views on Israel and the UK Jewish community.”Unanswered letter we sent Naz Shah in Jan, on lethality of rock-throwing, following erroneous comments in Parliament pic.twitter.com/IC27q5K0wz— Yiftah Curiel (@yiftahc) April 26, 2016-Also Wednesday, London’s Jewish Chronicle, citing the Guido Fawkes website, reported that Shah employed an aide, Mohammed Shabbir, who had “previously posted tweets about a ‘Palestinian Holocaust in Gaza’ and repeatedly used the term ‘Zio’. In a blog post about sex crimes and grooming,” the report said, Shabbir “claimed Russian Orthodox Jews were involved in ‘the sex trafficking trade – demand is particularly high among Charedim, the conservative Orthodox Jews, many of whom are regular clients of brothels…’.”In an August 2014 blog post, at the time of the Israel-Hamas war, Shabbir also wrote that Israel is “a ‘terror’ and ‘apartheid’ state,” and defended the flying of the Palestinian flag, but not the Israeli flag, at Bradford Town Hall.Responding to critics who asked why the Israeli flag could not also be flown, Shabbir wrote: “… many here in Bradford would be nauseated at seeing the Nazi flag or some other fascist with their Nazi salutes and chants…“Frankly Israel is a ‘terror’ and ‘apartheid’ state, its vexillum has become a symbol of despotism and genocide. In my view there is not an appropriate time to fly this flag in Bradford. One may ask what could be this time? Could it be at the return of British Israelis from Gaza with blood on their hands? I think not. Could it be during the holocaust memorial? Many Jews and people will question the conflation of a tragedy and crime like the holocaust with a flag committing another ethnic cleansing. So what is an appropriate time? There is none.”On Holocaust Memorial Day last year, Shabbir wrote about a visit he had made to Israel’s Yad Vashem Holocaust museum. Remembering the Holocaust, he wrote, “begs the questions why is the world allowing the Palestinian experience to continue? A nation that was not responsible for the holocaust bears the burden of European anti-Semitism and its guilt. We have politicians of all ilks in the UK, including Bradford council, proudly announcing that they are Zionists. I can’t imagine how they can with full knowledge of the atrocities that are taking place in Palestine.”Labour, Britain’s main opposition party, has come under fire in recent weeks amid a string of scandals involving alleged anti-Semitism.The Jewish Chronicle reported on Tuesday that Shah posted a tweet in August 2014 with a link to a blog that claims Zionism has been used to “groom” Jews to “exert political influence at the highest levels of public office,” and that compared Zionism to al-Qaeda. The article, titled “Colonization, Israel, Palestinian resistance and…”, from a blog called Walk Together, claimed Zionism, “like Al Qaeda, was and is a political movement layered with religious symbolism.”A spokesperson for the Israeli embassy in London said it had sent a letter to Shah in January, condemning remarks she made downplaying the effects of rock-throwing by Palestinian minors. The letter was not answered. As part of its self-declared crackdown on anti-Semitism, Labour suspended this week the party membership of a columnist from Ireland who apparently said Israel was using the Holocaust to receive money.John McAuliffe, an international member of the British party, columnist at Digital Journal and the Cambridge Globalist, was suspended after allegedly posting on Facebook a message in which he described the genocide as “the most useful political tool of the Zionist government in Israel to establish a financial racket in the West, whereby Israel receives an unlimited sum for the duration of its existence,” The Jewish News reported Monday. In his Facebook post, McAuliffe wrote: “The large level of poverty in Israel among Holocaust survivors shows they don’t care about the emotional impact they are trying to generate. It is about money and military technology. This further paints a clearer picture of the divide between Zionism and Judaism, and their incompatibility.”Another of the seven cases of anti-Semitism exposed within the party since March involved Vicki Kirby, a party activist who suggested on social media that Adolf Hitler might be a “Zionist god” and that Jews have “big noses.” She was suspended. In another, Aysegul Gurbuz, a London-area politician, was suspended and later resigned after her Twitter account was found to feature praise for Hitler and for Iran’s plans to “wipe Israel off the map.”Corbyn, who was elected Labour leader in September, told the BBC on April 11 that anyone making anti-Semitic statements “is auto-excluded from the party.” This policy was announced amid intense media scrutiny of Labour in connection with several incidents of hate speech against Jews, which some critics trace back to Corbyn’s past support for enemies of Israel, including Hamas and Hezbollah. He has called activists for both terrorist groups, which openly seek to destroy Israel, his “friends.”Jonathan Arkush, the president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, recently said these cases, along with Corbyn’s perceived inaction and his failure to distance himself from Hamas and Hezbollah, mean that most British Jews distrust Labour.Labour is also currently investigating claims of anti-Semitism at its Oxford University branch, allegations made by the branch’s former non-Jewish co-chairman who quit in protest at the society’s endorsement of Israeli Apartheid Week.

Iran may have secretly tested ballistic missile tech with ‘space launch’-Launch of rocket ostensibly designed to send satellites into orbit may have actually been cover for intercontinental missile research banned by UN-By Judah Ari Gross April 26, 2016, 5:40 pm-the times of israel

Iran test-fired an advanced rocket system in the Dasht-e Kavir desert last week, according to Russian and American officials, in what some considered a cover for intercontinental ballistic missile research. The Simorgh, as the rocket is known, is ostensibly designed to launch satellites into orbit. However, the technology involved is “practically identical” to intercontinental ballistic missiles, or ICBMs, and could be used to launch a nuclear device at targets thousands of miles away, according to Amir Toumaj, a research analyst at the Washington-based Foundation for Defense of Democracies think tank. The rocket launch was initially detected by two separate Russian radar stations at 9:33 a.m. GMT on April 19, Russian media reported, and it was later confirmed by US sources who first disclosed the test fire to the Washington Free Beacon.Under the Iran nuclear deal, which was signed last year, ballistic missile tests are not outright forbidden, but they are “not consistent” with a United Nations Security Council resolution from July 2015, US State Department spokesperson John Kirby said.According to the UN decision, “Iran is called upon not to undertake any activity related to ballistic missiles designed to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons, including launches using such ballistic missile technology” until October 2023.That has not stopped Iran from carrying out four tests of ballistic missile technology, including this most recent one, since the nuclear deal was adopted on October 18, 2015.Though some US officials confirmed news of last week’s launch, the US State Department spokesperson refused to publicly acknowledge it, saying only he’d “seen these reports.”“Certainly if it’s true, and we’re talking about a ballistic missile launch or the testing of ballistic missile technologies, that’s obviously of concern to us,” Kirby said last Wednesday, adding, “I don’t want to speculate about any future actions one way or another.”It was not immediately clear if the launch was a success, in large part because the exact purpose of the test was not known. The rocket did not exit earth’s atmosphere, which prompted some US officials to tell Fox News that Iran had not achieved its goal. However, if the intent of the launch was not to put a satellite into orbit, but rather to test just the first stage of the rocket, last week’s test may indeed have fulfilled its mission, which was Toumaj’s assessment of the launch.“According to [Russian] preliminary data, this was successful and impacted in the southern parts of Iran,” Toumaj told The Times of Israel via email. The rocket, dubbed the Simorgh after a griffin-like creature in Persian mythology, was first unveiled in 2010, but was mothballed for a few years, “possibly due to budgetary issues,” according to Toumaj, whose research focuses on Iranian issues. It is a liquid-fueled rocket similar to the North Korean Unha, which makes sense considering “the cooperation between Tehran and Pyongong on ballistic missiles is well-documented,” Toumaj wrote about the Simorgh test in an analysis last week.Last month, the head of Iran’s National Space Center Manouchehr Manteqi told local media the missile would be tested in three phases, the first of which would take place in the spring. The next phase would take place in the late summer or early fall of 2016, and the final test would be carried out in early 2017, Manteqi said.Despite having stated that launches would be carried out in the near future, the Iranian government has yet to officially recognize last week’s launch, nor has the issue been covered in local media save for one website, which only attributed news of the test fire to “foreign reports.”To Toumaj, this is not surprising, as the “Islamic Republic has no reason to announce tests until the full launch next year, assuming they proceed as planned,” he said.Iran is on track to develop an operational ICBM by the year 2020, Admiral William Gortney of the North American Aerospace Defense Command told the US Senate Armed Services Committee earlier this month.“Iran’s continuing pursuit of long-range missile capabilities and ballistic missile and space launch programs, in defiance of United Nations Security Council resolutions, remains a serious concern,” Gortney added. In late November, Iran launched a mid-range missile with a range of 1,200 miles (1,930 kilometers) from a site near the Gulf of Oman, US officials said. And in March, Iran test-fired two more ballistic missiles, which an Iranian news agency said had the phrase “Israel must be wiped out” written on them in Hebrew. An Iranian commander said the test was designed to demonstrate to Israel, whose destruction Iran seeks, that it is within Iranian missile range. The March 9 launch sparked international fury as it appeared to flout the agreements made in the Iranian nuclear deal. The US, France, Britain and Germany decried the launch as “destabilizing and provocative” and called for UN action.Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif brushed off the threat of UN action last month, saying the resolution was non-binding. According to Zarif, the wording of the decision — that Iran is merely “called upon” not to test ballistic missiles — does not make it legally obligatory. Moreover, since Iran does not yet possess nuclear weapons, the Islamic Republic “[does] not design any missiles to carry things we do not have,” Zarif said during a press conference in Australia. This is something of a fatuous argument, as “these ballistic missiles are inherently nuclear-capable,” Toumaj said, whether they are specifically designed to carry an atomic device or not.

Iran eyes Czech help in building new nuclear plants-Tehran also plans cooperation with European Union on atomic center to benefit regional countries-By Stuart Winer and Agencies April 25, 2016, 11:06 pm-the times of israel

Iran is seeking expertise from European countries to help advance its civilian nuclear program, and is hoping to sign up the Czech Republic to build new nuclear power plants as well as develop cooperation with the European Union.Behrouz Kamalvandi, a spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), said that countries with long experience in the field of nuclear energy are of particular interest, the semi-official Iranian Fars news agency reported on Monday.“After so many years of not being able to make trips with such aims, we now intend to expand our cooperation with s few European countries that have the nuclear technology,” Kamalvandi said.“Perhaps, there are only 20 countries that have access to nuclear knowledge, and some of them, such as the Czech Republic and Slovakia, have been in the business for decades,” he noted. “That’s why we want to cooperate with them.”Last July, Iran signed a nuclear agreement with world powers in which it committed to dismantling weapons-capable parts of its nuclear program in exchange for the removal of strict financial sanctions that had impacted the Iranian economy.AEOI chief Ali Akbar Salehi is scheduled to visit the Czech Republic next week, and then head to Slovakia for talks on proposals for nuclear power plants.Salehi told journalists in Tehran on Sunday that Iran is holding discussions with the European Union on nuclear cooperation, including a joint project at the Fordo uranium enrichment plant.“Various talks and visits have been made between Iran and certain European states after the nuclear deal and this time we are witnessing the presence of an EU delegation within this framework,” Salehi said after meeting the EU energy commissioner Maros Sefcovic.“We have held good talks with the EU delegation on nuclear cooperation, which can start from the Fordo site,” Salehi noted, according to Fars. He said that Tehran and the EU plan to set up an advanced nuclear center to provide services for Iran and other countries in the region.Under the terms of the July 2015 nuclear deal, Iran agreed to convert the Fordo site into a research facility and remove about two-thirds of all its installed centrifuges as well as significant infrastructure.Earlier this month, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said nuclear cooperation was on the agenda during a one-day visit by a delegation headed by EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini.Last week, AEOI spokesman Kamalvandi said Tehran and the European Union are set to sign a deal on nuclear cooperation for civilian purposes, Fars reported.“Cooperation has started in practice and we have exchanged delegations with the EU, China, South Korea, Japan, the far East and countries which enjoy nuclear technology, whose number is not so high; we will interact with all of them and a document is due to be endorsed with the EU which is being compiled,” Kamalvandi said.Meanwhile, Reuters on Monday quoted Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran was in negotiations with Moscow to sell it 40 tons of heavy water from its nuclear program.Citing Fars, Reuters quoted comments made by Araghchi the day before, when he announced that the US has already bought some of the heavy water and other countries were taking an interest.“We are negotiating with Russia to sell 40 tonnes of heavy water,” Araghchi also said.Under the terms of the 2015 nuclear deal, which Araghchi helped to negotiate, Iran agreed to get rid of its stockpile of heavy water. Although heavy water is not radioactive, it is used in the process of making an atomic bomb.According to Reuters, the Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed that Moscow was mulling the idea.

Fires tear through thousands of acres across country-Many of the blazes apparently caused by negligent hikers, army training-By Times of Israel staff April 27, 2016, 6:17 pm

Fires destroyed at least 2,400 acres of land in the country’s south over the past 10 days, the Israel Nature and Parks Authority said Wednesday, adding that most of the blazes were apparently caused either by arson or negligence on the part of hikers or IDF soldiers. In the country’s north, near the Galilean town of Biriya, about 10 hectares of natural forest were consumed in a wildfire, most probably caused by a barbecue that had been left unattended, the authority added. On Tuesday, fires broke out in several other locations across the country, including the Western Galilee, the Jezreel Valley, and along the banks of the Jordan River.Over the seven-day Passover holiday, the Parks Authority reported that tens of thousands of hikers visited the sites of Ein Gedi, Caesarea National Park, the Tzukim Nature Reserve, the Eshkol National Park and the Gan Hashlosha National Park. Tens of thousands of Israelis also took to beaches of the Sea of Galilee, filling them to capacity and forcing local authorities to deny entrance to late arrivals. The Jewish National Fund, which administers many of the country’s forests, warned vacation-goers to be cautious of where they light fires and passed out plastic bags for cleaning up campgrounds.Typically for a holiday season, rescue teams were called into action on several occasions to extract hikers from danger.

Israeli-made ‘black hole’ could win Stephen Hawking a Nobel-After 40 years of speculation, a Technion physicist may have definitively proved the groundbreaking ‘Hawking Radiation’ theory-By Times of Israel staff April 27, 2016, 9:07 pm

British physicist Steven Hawking could finally win a Nobel Prize for his groundbreaking theory on black holes thanks to new research out of Israel’s Technion. In 1974, Hawking hypothesized that black holes are slowly evaporating, challenging the conventional understanding that nothing could escape from the void of a black hole. The theory, known as Hawking Radiation, suggests that subatomic light particles are sometimes ejected back out of a black hole, taking with them tiny amounts of energy, resulting in a gradual decrease in its mass over time until it evaporates completely. But more than 40 years later, no one had been able to prove Hawkings theory, mainly because light particles from black holes are too small to be detected from Earth.Enter Technion-Israel Institute of Technology Physics Professor Jeff Steinhauer. Last year, he and his team of researchers recreated the conditions of a black hole in a lab using sound waves in order to study how subatomic particles behave on its edge, known as an event horizon. In his new paper published on the arXiv.org physics site, Steinhauer explains that he simulated a black hole event horizon by cooling helium to just above absolute zero (–273.15 degrees C or –459.67 degrees F), and then heating it rapidly to create a barrier impenetrable to sound waves, similar to light from a black hole.During the experiment, Steinhauer found that tiny particles of energy that formed sound waves did escape his simulated black hole, as Hawking suggested.“This confirms Hawking’s prediction regarding black hole thermodynamics,” Steinhauer wrote in the introduction to his paper.Silke Weinfurtner, a physicist at the University of Nottingham who is also working to detect Hawking Radiation in a lab-simulated black hole, warned Steinhauer’s results were not conclusive.“The experiments are beautiful,” he told The Times of London this week. “Jeff has done an amazing job, but some of the claims he makes are open to debate. This is worth discussing.”According to the report, the research is currently undergoing peer review at a prominent journal, where experts are checking if Steinhauer’s observations could be attributed to something else, such as tiny vibrations caused by flaws in the experiment’s design. If Steinhauer’s observations are accepted by the scientific community, it would become the strongest evidence to date supporting Hawking Radiation, the Times said.According to numerous reports, Steinhauer’s observations on the ground-breaking theory could win Hawking his first Nobel Prize.

Ohio attorney general visits homes where 8 were shot dead-Associated Press-April 27, 2016 — 11:35am-STARTRIBUNE

PIKETON, Ohio — Ohio's attorney general is touring the four homes where eight people from one family were shot dead in a rural part of the state.Seven adults and a 16-year-old boy were found dead Friday at four properties in the hills near Piketon. Investigators have interviewed more than 50 people but haven't made arrests or confirmed a specific motive for the slayings.Attorney General Mike DeWine was in a group of law enforcement vehicles that headed up a winding road toward some of the properties Wednesday morning. He had been at the scenes last week, but a spokeswoman said DeWine planned this time to go inside each home.A coroner says seven of the eight victims were shot multiple times, and one had nine gunshot wounds. Some victims also had bruising.

EU rejects Greek calls for bailout summit By Eric Maurice-APR 27,16-EUOBSERVER

BRUSSELS, Today, 14:55-European Council president Donald Tusk has turned down a Greek request to organise an EU summit over the Greek bailout, but called for a Eurogroup meeting within days.Tusk, who spoke to Greek prime minister Alexis Tsipras on Wednesday morning (27 April), said there was "still more work to be done by the ministers of finance".But he said that "a specific date for the new Eurogroup meeting" was needed."I am not talking about weeks but about days," he told journalists in Brussels."We have to avoid a situation of renewed uncertainty for Greece."Tusk said his decision was taken after close consultation with Eurogroup president Jeroen Dijsselbloem and European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker.Tsipras was requesting a summit to talk about the bailout programme agreed last summer, as discussions to conclude the first review of the programme stalled on Tuesday.EU leaders are wary of putting the Greek issue back on the top table. They did it last year when the risk of a Greek exit from the eurozone was felt to be real."We are not there yet," an EU source said Wednesday.Greek officials and representatives from the quartet of lenders - the European Commission, the European Central Bank, the European Stability Mechanism and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) - failed to reach an agreement on so-called contingency measures..The lenders want Greece to approve austerity measures that would be implemented if the country missed targets for the budget primary surplus (the surplus before the payment of interest on the public debt) set for 2018 by the bailout agreement. The Greek government said approving such measures in advance would be unconstitutional and argued that the new austerity plan goes beyond what was agreed in last summer's bailout programme. The contingency package was "a safeguard to ensure that if anything happens [with the bailout programme], we will have something to trigger to correct it", an EU source said on Wednesday.Talks have so far stumbled on issues such as how to legislate the package, how to trigger it, according to what criteria, and whether specific measures or only a mechanism should be designed.Greek government sources said the IMF was to blame because the fund rejected a Greek proposal to create a balancing mechanism instead of the adoption of a contingency package, according to Greek press agency ANA-MPA.Greek finance minister Euclid Tsakalotos said on Tuesday that quartet officials needed to consult between themselves and with their political authorities.-'Hawks'-In addition to differences between Greece and the quartet, the different players within the quartet and member states within the eurozone differ on the scale and depths of the measures to be imposed on Greece. The IMF and some EU states demand more cuts now in order to secure Greek finances in the long term and avoid a large debt relief package.Other member states, and to some extent the European Commission, are more concerned about the risk of stifling a growth. For these players, the contingency package should be designed to be used "when it is absolutely needed" and in a way that would not be damaging to the Greek economy, a source said.Tsipras' call for a summit received support from the head of the socialist group in the European Parliament."We cannot ask Greece to take additional measures. This would mean that some 'hawks' want to kill Greece and we cannot allow this blackmail," Gianni Pittella said Wednesday."If the Eurogroup cannot find a way out, despite the efforts of the European Commission, then the political leadership of Europe should take the lead at an extraordinary euro summit next week.”Meanwhile quartet officials remain in Athens to continue talks. A Eurogroup meeting next week to validate an agreement is “possible but not confirmed yet”, a source close to the Eurogroup told EUobserver.“It depends on progress in the coming days.”

Obama urges EU nations to stick together By Andrew Rettman-EUOBSERVER

BRUSSELS, 25. Apr, 17:43-US president Barack Obama has urged EU nations to stick together and praised German chancellor Angela Merkel for welcoming refugees.Speaking in Hannover, Germany, on the fourth day of a European tour, he said the economic crisis coupled with the migration crisis “have led some to question whether European integration can long endure; whether you might be better off separating off.”“European unity can require frustrating compromise … We understand how easy it must be to vent at Brussels and complain,” he said.“Perhaps you need an outsider, somebody who is not European, to remind you of the magnitude of what you have achieved,” he added. He said the US and the wider world “needs a strong and prosperous and democratic and united Europe”, which he described as “one of the greatest political and economic achievements of modern times.”“Remember that every member of your union is a democracy. That's not an accident. Remember that no EU country has raised arms against another. That's not an accident … people desperately want to come here precisely because of what you've created,” he said.Obama’s speech came shortly before the UK referendum in June on whether to leave the EU.It came more broadly amid concern that the EU might unravel as members squabble over how to handle the huge numbers of refugees. In a sign of the times, in Austria last weekend a far-right candidate came top in the first round of the presidential election. In Germany, Merkel’s approval rating has plunged due to her initially welcoming approach to refugees.Obama praised her for her “steady hands” and her “moral compass.”“Chancellor Merkel and others have eloquently reminded us that we cannot turn our backs on our fellow human beings who are here now, and need our help now,” he said.He cited Islamist terrorism and “Russian aggression” as the greatest threats to European security. He said he would send 250 more US special forces to Syria to help in the fight against the jihadist group Islamic State and urged EU countries to share intelligence despite people’s concerns on privacy rights.“If we truly value our liberty, then we have to take the steps that are necessary to share information and intelligence within Europe, as well as between the United States and Europe,” he said.“Russian aggression has flagrantly violated the sovereignty and territory of an independent European nation, Ukraine, and that unnerves our allies in Eastern Europe,” he added.-'Complacent EU'-He said he wants “good relations” with Russia. But he said that “we need to keep sanctions on Russia in place” until it stops the war in east Ukraine. He also urged Nato countries to rely less on the US for their security needs. “I'll be honest, sometimes Europe has been complacent about its own defence,” he said.Obama later on Tuesday met with the British, French, German and Italian leaders also in Hannover prior to going home.He began his tour in the UK on Friday where his exhortation for the UK to stay in the EU drew howls of protest from the Brexit campaigners. His praise of Merkel’s “moral compass” comes after she authored an EU deal with Turkey to take back migrants despite complaints of human rights abuses by leading NGOs.Meanwhile, his tough line on Russia is not shared by everybody in Berlin.Speaking to the Handelsblatt newspaper at the weekend, German foreign minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said it was time to “engage in a process of rapprochement” with Russia despite it actions in Ukraine.“The current G7 format is not an end in itself. Personally, I would favour setting out conditions - sooner rather than later - to enable a return to the G8 format,” he added, referring to Russia’s membership in the club of leading world nations.

European experts to probe Polish police law By Aleksandra Eriksson-APR 27,16-EUOBSERVER

BRUSSELS, Today, 09:31-The Venice Commission is travelling to Poland again. The commission, a body of experts on constitutional law from the human rights watchdog Council of Europe, will visit on Thursday and Friday (28 and 29 April) to gather information on a police law adopted on 15 January. The updated police law is known in Poland as the “act of surveillance”.Critics say it gives the police too much access to read and record people’s phone and internet data, and even standard mail. The police also get extended rights to record video and audio in buildings and on public transport. They do not have to inform those investigated or ask courts for authorisation.Ombudsman Adam Bodnar, Poland’s official human rights defender, asked Poland’s constitutional court for an opinion. The delegation will meet with parliamentarians as well as representatives of the prosecutor's office, the ministries of justice and home affairs, the ombudsman and NGOs.Council of Europe spokesman Panos Kakaviatos said the visit was of a technical nature and would form the basis of an opinion to be discussed in June, at the Council’s next plenary session.-Judicial dispute-The Polish government, led by the right-wing Law and Justice Party, has already been criticised by the Venice Commission and European Commission over its attempts to overhaul the constitutional court. The government tried to install loyalist judges and change the rules that govern the court's verdicts. The constitutional court refused to recognise the reforms, and the government has said it will not publish its decisions in the legal gazette. On Tuesday, Poland’s supreme court weighed into the debate on the side of the constitutional court, saying it will respect the court's judgments whether or not they are published in the gazette.Supreme court spokesman Dariusz Swiecki said it was a cue for lower Polish courts to follow.Law and Justice spokeswoman Beata Mazurek insisted that rulings were not valid unless they were published by the government. She angered critics by saying that the supreme court’s statement was of little importance.“In reality, it was a meeting of pals that defend the status quo of the previous powers”, she stated.Law and Justice claimed the constitutional court needed to be reformed because it was filled with appointees from the previous government.-Dispute 'becoming a war'-Mazurek said the government would appoint a committee of experts to oversee another review of the law regulating the constitutional court. Her party claims this will solve the dispute around the court. It remains unclear whether courts will follow the supreme court’s advice. It also failed to calm some of those who worry about the risk of a duality of laws in Poland.Journalist Michal Szuldrzynski wrote in a comment in the Rzeczpospolita daily that the supreme court's intervention was well-meaning, but it would not change the fact that the government and parliamentary majority do not recognise the constitutional court’s judgments.“It’s not the case that Law and Justice politicians lack arguments in this conflict,” he wrote.“Some lawyers share their arguments, not only for political reasons. The substance is that this conflict is turning into a war … and this war is ruining the Polish state.”

Trump’s ‘very good’ night: ‘I consider myself the presumptive nominee’-Holly Bailey-National Correspondent-April 26, 2016-YAHOONEWS

NEW YORK — Donald Trump took another step toward clinching the Republican presidential nomination Tuesday, easily sweeping Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, Rhode Island and Connecticut in the latest round of GOP primaries. But Trump’s victories, while commanding, did not bring an end to the Republican contest. Though the real estate mogul and former reality television star was expected to take home the majority of the 172 delegates at stake in Tuesday’s voting, adding to his already sizable lead, Pennsylvania’s delegate rules stopped Trump from making a clean sweep. While Trump won Pennsylvania’s statewide vote, clinching 17 of the state’s 71 delegates, another 54 were officially “unbound,” meaning they can make their own decision about which candidate to support at the party’s convention in July in Cleveland. That technicality gave a glimmer of hope to Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas and Ohio Gov. John Kasich, who are trying to stop Trump from getting the 1,237 delegates needed to clinch the GOP nomination before the convention.Still, Trump characterized his wins Tuesday as proof of his unstoppable momentum. Speaking to reporters at his election night event at Trump Tower, the GOP frontrunner said he considered the race “effectively over” because Cruz and Kasich “cannot win.”“I consider myself the presumptive nominee,” Trump said. “If you look honestly, Sen. Cruz and Gov. Kasich should really get out of the race. … They should get out of the race, and we should heal the Republican Party.”Although Trump now leads Cruz by more than 300 delegates, neither the Texas senator nor Kasich seems interested in ending his quest for the White House. The contest now shifts to Indiana, a state that could make or break the #NeverTrump movement. There, Trump narrowly leads Cruz in a state that is viewed as friendly territory for the Texas senator. And on Tuesday night, Cruz took his campaign to the New Castle Fieldhouse, the legendary home of the Indiana Hoosiers basketball team, where he cast himself as an underdog unwilling to give up the fight.“Tonight, this campaign moves back toward favorable terrain,” Cruz declared. “When Trump heads to Indiana on Wednesday, he will attempt to one-up Cruz in terms of basketball pandering. He plans to campaign with former Hoosiers coach Bobby Knight, a beloved sports figure in the state who endorsed Trump several months ago.But Trump will first make a stop in Washington, D.C., where he’s scheduled to deliver a foreign policy speech — the first of several policy speeches he has promised to make as he attempts to transition from a primary to a general election candidate. The candidate declined to go into specifics of what exactly he would talk about Wednesday. But he did reject the idea that he will tone down his rhetoric — pushing back on his convention manager Paul Manafort’s comments to members of the Republican National Committee last week that suggested Trump is merely playing “a part” and would embrace a more “presidential” tone in the coming weeks.“I am me. I am not playing a part,” Trump said Tuesday night, adding that he had received dozens of messages from supporters saying, “Please don’t change, please don’t change.” “If you have a football team, and you are winning … why would I change?” he said.

US sends warning shot in Iraq via Hellfire missile-[AFP]-April 26, 2016-YAHOONEWS

Washington (AFP) - Before blowing up a jihadist cash hoard in Iraq, the US military warned bystanders of an impending strike by using a Hellfire missile to deliver the wartime equivalent of a doorknock, an official said Tuesday. It was the first time the Pentagon has conducted a "knock operation" in Iraq and Syria, and the inspiration came from watching the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) pioneer the controversial tactic in Gaza, Major General Peter Gersten said. The Baghdad-based commander told Pentagon reporters that ahead of the strike on a cash-storage facility on April 5 in Mosul, the military learned that a woman, children and other "non-combatants" also were using the building. He said the United States aims to avoid civilian casualties, and in this instance decided to warn occupants by exploding a missile just above the roof."We went as far as actually to put a Hellfire on top of the building and air burst it so it wouldn't destroy the building, simply knock on the roof to ensure that she and the children were out of the building," he said."Then we proceeded with our operations."Ultimately, the woman died anyway because she ran back just after US forces launched bombs to blow it up."Much as we tried to do exactly what we wanted to do and minimize civilian casualties, post-weapons release, she actually ran back into the building," Gersten said. "That's ... very difficult for us to watch."Gersten said several men had also fled the building. He did not say if they were IS jihadists."The men that were in that building, multiple men, literally trampled over her to get out," he said. The coalition has carried out about 20 strikes on IS cash, blowing up as much as $800 million worth of cash in the process, Gersten said.Critics of the 20-month-old US-led coalition attacking the IS group in Iraq and Syria say the military is overly cautious in avoiding civilian casualties. In a move ridiculed by hawkish opponents in the US Congress and privately by some coalition partners, pilots dropped pamphlets before bombing trucks ferrying illicit oil around Syria for the IS group. The IDF has for years warned occupants of buildings suspected of housing Hamas weapons to get out by "roof knocking."The technique has drawn sharp criticism. Observers say occupants are sometimes killed in the warning strike, or even run up to their rooftops to see what happened -- only to be killed in the follow-up strike.

Canada PM Trudeau says no to ransoms-[AFP]-April 26, 2016-YAHOONEWS

Ottawa (AFP) - Canada will not pay ransoms for the release of its citizens held hostage overseas, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Tuesday after the gruesome killing of a Canadian in the Philippines."Canada does not and will not pay ransom to terrorists, directly or indirectly," Trudeau said, vowing instead to hunt down and prosecute hostage-takers.His comments come after Trudeau delivered the grim news on Monday that Canadian John Ridsdel had been killed by his captors -- the Abu Sayyaf militant group -- in the Philippines. Efforts, however, were continuing to try to secure the release of three others, including another Canadian national, he said.In decrying ransom payouts, Trudeau explained that they helped to support criminal or terrorist activities, and "endangered the lives of every single one of the millions of Canadians who live, work and travel around the globe" as they could become targets for abduction.Trudeau said that he and British Prime Minister David Cameron agreed in a telephone conversation earlier to press allies on the issue."We agreed that it is something that we are going to make sure that we do bring up with our friends and allies around the world as we come to grips with the fact that the world is a dangerous place," he said."We need to make sure that terrorists understand that they cannot continue to fund their crimes and their violence from taking innocents hostage," he added.Ridsdel, fellow Canadian tourist Robert Hall, Hall's girlfriend Filipina Marites Flor, and Norwegian resort manager Kjartan Sekkingstad were kidnapped seven months ago from yachts at a marina near the major city of Davao, more than 500 kilometers (300 miles) from Jolo.In a recent video, Ridsdel, a retiree in his late 60s, said his captors would kill him on April 25 if a ransom of $6.4 million was not paid.Hours after the deadline passed, police in the Philippines said two people on a motorbike dropped a head in a plastic bag near city hall on Jolo, a mostly lawless island around 1,000 kilometers south of Manila that is one of the Abu Sayyaf group's main strongholds.

US military conducts cyber attacks on IS-[AFP]-AFP-April 26, 2016-YAHOONEWS

Washington (AFP) - The US military is now conducting cyber attacks on the Islamic State group, a general said Tuesday as the Pentagon looks to accelerate the fight against the jihadists.A US-led coalition has been striking IS fighters in Iraq and Syria since August 2014, and officials have long stated the importance of using cyber techniques such as overloading IS networks to limit the group's communications and ability to reach potential new recruits."We have now begun to use our exquisite cyber capabilities in this fight against Daesh," Baghdad-based Major General Peter Gersten told Pentagon reporters, using an acronym that comes from the group's name in Arabic. He did not elaborate except to say the effort is "highly coordinated" and has been "very effective."In February, Defense Secretary Ashton Carter and the US military's top officer, General Joe Dunford, said the United States was determined to "accelerate" the anti-IS campaign, and indicated cyber warfare would play an increasingly important role in doing so.Earlier this month, Deputy Secretary of Defense Robert Work said: "We are dropping cyberbombs" on the IS group. The New York Times published a story Sunday saying the US Cyber Command had placed "implants" in IS networks that let experts monitor the group's behavior and ultimately imitate or alter commanders' messages so they unwittingly direct fighters to areas likely to be hit by drone or plane strikes. The US Cyber Command is charged with protecting America's military and some civilian networks from attacks, as well as deploying its own offensive cyber strategies if needed.By 2018, it will have more than 6,000 military and civilian technical experts working across 133 teams. One such team, comprising about 65 people, today works in the Middle East and carries out cyber operations against IS networks.Admiral Michael Rogers, head of both Cyber Command and the National Security Agency, declined to provide any additional information Tuesday."We have publicly acknowledged that we are using cyber as another tool against ISIL," Rogers said at a Georgetown University cybersecurity conference, using an acronym for the IS group."I want them to be aware: We are going to contest you on the kinetic battlefield, we are going to contest you with information dynamics, we are committed to this fight," he added.

GENESIS 7:6-12
6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.
8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,
9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.
10 And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.

Tornadoes, strong storms hit central U.S. states-[Reuters]-April 27, 2016-YAHOONEWS

AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - A powerful spring storm brought strong winds and baseball-sized hail to several central states on Tuesday, with tornadoes spotted in Kansas and Oklahoma as the severe weather marched east, forecasters said. The storm knocked down tree limbs and left about 20,000 people in the Oklahoma City metropolitan area without power, utility provider OG&E and local officials said.Hail and falling branches caused damage to cars and roofs across portions of the Great Plains, and tornadoes were reported in Kansas and Oklahoma, but the region was spared the destructive twisters that forecasters said could have been spawned by the storm system. There have so far been no reports of serious injuries.A tornado watch was still in effect for portions of Texas and Oklahoma but the alert had expired late on Tuesday in eastern Kansas and southern Nebraska, according to the National Weather Service.Thunderstorms that could lead to flooding were possible on Wednesday in Arkansas, northwest Louisiana, eastern Oklahoma and eastern Texas, the service said.Large hail hit several areas in Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma on Tuesday, and schools in Oklahoma City and some of its suburbs closed early ahead of the severe weather. In Missouri, high winds snapped power lines while winds in Illinois caused empty grain railcars to flip over, the service said based on local reports. In Marshall County, Kansas, there were reports of grapefruit-sized hail falling on the community of Bremen, the local emergency management agency said.Hail storms in Texas in late March and earlier this month hit major cities including Dallas, Fort Worth and San Antonio, causing damages estimated at several billion dollars.(Reporting by Jon Herskovitz, additional reporting by Heide Brandes in Oklahoma City and Victoria Cavaliere in New York; editing by Tom Brown, Himani Sarkar and Tom Hogue)

Hero dog dies of exhaustion after rescuing 7 from earthquake in Ecuador-Michael Walsh-Yahoo News-April 26, 2016

The news quickly went viral after the fire department for the northern city of Ibarra announced the death of 4-year-old Labrador retriever Dayko, who had been with its K-9 unit for three and a half years.“The Fire Department of Ibarra would like to express a brotherly thanks to all the people who gave us their support, and not only in regards to the death of our beloved canine Dayko,” the department said in a Facebook post.According to Spanish-language news, such as ABC, Dayko suffered from heat stroke and injuries while braving the flames to find more victims, ultimately succumbing to a heart attack — despite resuscitation attempts by veterinarians and firefighters. The fire department posted a series of pictures in honor of Dayko that show him searching through the rubble left behind by the 7.8-magnitude earthquake on April 16.Some lambasted the fire department for working the Labrador to the point of exhaustion. In a subsequent Facebook post, the department defended the handling of its canines. The earthquake, which has been called the worst in the country’s history, has left more than 600 dead and over 12,000 injured. The United Nations announced Monday that its World Food Programme will distribute food to 260,000 people who are hungry after surviving the chaos.

Battle over N.C. transgender law intensifies as lawmakers reconvene-[Reuters]-By Marti Maguire-April 26, 2016-YAHOONEWS

RALEIGH, N.C. (Reuters) - Thousands of people flocked to North Carolina's capital on Monday to show both support and disdain for a law that has thrust the state into the international spotlight over its restrictions on transgender bathroom access and gay rights.Lawmakers returned to Raleigh to begin a short session designed to address the state budget. But controversy over the new law, which has drawn reaction from U.S. presidential candidates, U.S. President Barack Obama and British Prime Minister David Cameron among others, is expected to dominate. The measure puts the state at the center of a debate over equality, privacy and religious freedom as states propose legislation seen as discriminatory against gay and transgender people in the wake of a U.S. Supreme Court last year ruling that legalized same-sex marriage.North Carolina became the first U.S. state to require transgender people to use restrooms in public buildings and schools that match the sex on their birth certificate rather than their gender identity.Fifty-four people were arrested at the Legislative Building as they protested against the law on Monday, General Assembly police Officer Scott Cameron said."Our state is a state of crisis," Chris Sgro, executive director of the Equality North Carolina advocacy group, said earlier in the day before activists delivered petitions to Republican Governor Pat McCrory's office demanding the law's repeal.A group of Democratic representatives filed a bill seeking a repeal. But leading Republican lawmakers in the state have shown little willingness to back down, and they were greeted at a rally on Monday by thousands of people who came on church buses and held signs thanking them for the measure.Business leaders, entertainers and politicians including Obama and Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump have come out against the law. Opponents contend it demonizes transgender people and limits government protections against discrimination for gays and lesbians.Supporters including social conservatives and Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz say it is needed to protect women and children from sexual predators in bathrooms. On Monday, singers Demi Lovato and Nick Jonas joined a growing list of entertainers who have canceled shows in the state. Lovato wrote on Twitter that she and Jonas were protesting "this hateful law."As part of the backlash, companies and associations have relocated conventions and halted job-creating investment projects initially slated for North Carolina.Republican State Representative Paul Stam criticized companies, including PayPal Holdings , that have pulled jobs out of North Carolina over the measure."They have offices in countries where homosexuals are executed," he said. "The hypocrisy of those who oppose this bill is amazing."(Additional reporting and writing by Colleen Jenkins)

HOARDING OF GOLD AND SILVER

JAMES 5:1-3
1 Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you.
2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten.

17 For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off,
19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate.

Israel fears IS affiliate on Syrian border holds chemical weapons-Officials are monitoring the actions of the Yarmouk Martyrs Brigade, believing they may be planning to test the deadly agents-By Times of Israel staff April 27, 2016, 1:33 am

Defense officials are concerned that an Islamic State affiliate operating near the Syrian border with Israel has acquired chemicals weapons and may be planning to test them, Channel 10 news reported Tuesday. The report said officials believed the Yarmouk Martyrs Brigade, a terrorist group affiliated with the Islamic State and based on the Syrian side of the Golan Heights, may have recently gotten its hands on chemical weapons which once belonged to the Assad regime.Israel is closely monitoring the organization, and believes it may be planning tests of the weapons’ capabilities. The Channel 10 report noted that the group was not currently concerned with Israel and was not directing offensive efforts against it, being preoccupied with fighting other groups in the Syrian civil war. Any chemical weaponry in their hands was thus not considered an immediate threat to Israelis. But officials fear this may well change in the future. The Islamic State’s possession of chemical weapons has been a major point of concern among Western governments.Earlier this month, the group reportedly mounted a deadly gas attack against Syrian troops at a besieged eastern airbase. On March 9, a suspected IS gas attack on the Iraqi town of Taza, south of Kirkuk, killed three children and wounded some 1,500 people, with injuries ranging from burns to rashes and respiratory problems. While the chemical agents allegedly used by IS so far have been among their least effective weapons, the psychological impact on civilians is considerable.A total of 25,000 people fled their homes in and around Taza last month, fearing another attack.AFP contributed to this report.

Gaza kids put on play about stabbing, killing Israelis-Young children brandishing toy knives and guns act out violent scenes in event broadcast on Hamas television-By Times of Israel staff April 27, 2016, 1:02 am

Young Palestinian children participating in a festival in the Gaza Strip this week wore military fatigues, and brandished toy knives and machine guns as they performed a play simulating violence against Israelis. The event was broadcast on a Hamas television channel dedicated to culture, available in Gaza and the West Bank, according to Channel 2 news. One short clip of the play aired on Channel 2 on Tuesday shows a young girl armed with a knife attempting to free a Palestinian prisoner from Israeli jail by stabbing the guards. She is shot and falls to the ground amid cries and screams from the audience. Other little girls then approach and cry over her “body.”“Do not be angry with her,” a voice on the loudspeaker says. “She is your blood, your flesh and your honor.”In the next scene, a boy dressed as a masked Palestinian sniper shoots a soldier and frees the prisoner from Israel.“Rejoice! the sniper has arrived!” the upbeat music plays during the scene.ISIS-like brainwashing in a kids' festival in Gaza: toddlers act out stabbing & shooting attacks against Israelis. pic.twitter.com/4ToCxvrXC2— Ofir Gendelman (@ofirgendelman) April 25, 2016-The play was performed in the Strip’s southern city of Khan Younis as part of the ongoing Palestine Festival for Children and Education.Ofir Gendelman, the Arab media spokesperson at the Prime Minister’s Office compared the play to the propaganda of the Islamic State.“When Palestinians send their kids to act in this school play no wonder their kids committ [sic] attacks when they’re older” Gendelman tweeted.Negative portrayals of Jews and Israelis in official Palestinian media and school textbooks have long been a concern to Israeli officials who claim the content amounts to incitement.Israeli politicians have demanded that the Palestinian Authority crack down on anti-Israel and anti-Semitic rhetoric in official broadcasts, arguing it has inspired many young Palestinians to carry out attacks against Israelis.

Israeli forces nab 3 Palestinians said plotting Jerusalem attack-Residents of Nablus allegedly planned terror attack in capital on Passover; arrests made in joint Shin Bet-police operation-By Judah Ari Gross April 26, 2016, 9:05 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Three Palestinians from Nablus suspected of plotting a terrorist attack against Israelis were arrested overnight in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Jabel Mukaber, the Shin Bet security agency said Tuesday. The joint police and Shin Bet sting operation nabbed the three, who were allegedly planning a terror attack in Jerusalem over the Passover holiday. The Shin Bet said that the three had no weapons on their persons at the time of their arrest, but “expressed the intention to carry out a terror attack in the immediate future.”The three were all residents of the West Bank city of Nablus, but were located in an East Jerusalem apartment at the time of their arrest. It was not immediately clear if they were simply passing through the Jabel Mukaber neighborhood or had been illegally living there for some time.“The three were arrested and handed over to security forces for questioning,” the Shin Bet said in a statement. The suspects reportedly did not have an arrest record nor were they known members of a terrorist organization. In the West Bank, IDF soldiers arrested three other Palestinians for undisclosed reasons. One was arrested in Qalandiya, while the other two were arrested in villages outside of Bethlehem. The arrests came just a week after a bomb exploded on a Jerusalem city bus, injuring 20. Hamas claimed the suicide bomber was a member of the Palestinian terrorist organization.Police have beefed up security around Jerusalem’s Old City and on the Temple Mount in a bid to prevent disturbances at the flashpoint sites during Passover, when thousands of Jewish and foreign tourists visit.Earlier this month, the IDF warned that although Israel has seen a period of relative calm in past weeks, the terror wave could pick up again over the Passover holiday.“We are gearing up for a significant escalation [in violence] and ahead of that, we will boost reinforcements,” an IDF official said on April 13.

US tries, fails to mimic Israeli ‘roof-knock’ bomb warning in Iraq-American pilot first fires non-lethal device as a heads-up to an impending attack; woman still dies as she runs back inside after initial blast-By Judah Ari Gross April 26, 2016, 9:44 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

The US military employed an Israeli technique, albeit unsuccessfully, of warning civilians prior to an airstrike, known as “roof-knocking,” in the Islamic State stronghold of Mosul, Iraq, a senior American air force officer told reporters Tuesday. The technique has been used extensively by Israel in its operations in the Gaza Strip over the years in an attempt to minimize civilian casualties in a densely populated urban area, but only debuted on April 5 in an American operation, Maj. Gen. Peter Gersten said via video link from Baghdad. In the “knock on the roof” technique, as its known, pilots drop a non-explosive device on a building, which warns the occupants of an imminent bombing and allows them to escape unharmed. However, this tactic is not perfect, and some Gaza residents have been killed by the initial blast or in the following airstrike, if they were unable or unwilling to exit the building. It has thus far only been employed once by US troops and, unfortunately, the American attempt to copy this tactic was ultimately unsuccessful, but Gersten indicated it was part of a renewed effort by the US military to minimize civilian casualties. In addition, he said, the also-Israeli tactic of dropping warning leaflets has also been adopted by US troops in Iraq and Syria.Earlier this month, coalition forces tracked a local leader of the Islamic State to a building in Mosul, where fighters would regularly meet to receive some of the approximately $150 million stored in the facility. This was part of an ongoing coalition effort to bomb and deplete IS cash reserves. Thus far some $800 million has been destroyed, Gersten told reporters. However, they also spotted “a female and her children” entering and exiting the building, according to Gersten, Deputy Commander of Operations and Intelligence in the campaign against IS, known in America as Operation Inherent Resolve. The US troops dedicated reconnaissance and surveillance efforts to create a “pattern-of-life study,” in order to track the non-combatants in the facility, the general said in a US Department of Defense briefing.“We formulated a plan to ensure that those women and children and the non-combatants were clear of that objective,” he said.In order to warn the civilians, the pilot “put a Hellfire (missile) on top of the building and air burst it ” — detonated the explosive above the target — “so it wouldn’t destroy the building, simply knock on the roof, to ensure that she and the children were out of the building,” Gersten said.“We did see the woman and child leave,” he said. However, after the pilot fired the first Hellfire missile as a warning, the woman “ran back into the building” and was killed in the full explosive airstrike.“It ultimately ended in a civilian casualty,” Gersten said. “We watched; it was very difficult for us. It was within the final seconds of the impact.”Video of the attempt was not immediately available, but Gersten told reporters in the Pentagon it would be forthcoming. This technique was first conceived and employed by the Israeli Air Force, and Gersten admitted “that is exactly where we took the procedure from,” but US coalition forces did not consult with Israel in order to learn how to carry out the “knock on the roof” technique.“We didn’t work with them, but we have watched and observed their procedure,” Gersten said.Though many have praised Israel for employing this technique and others to limit civilian casualties, others — including the UN and Amnesty International — say it is ultimately ineffective at preventing the deaths of non-combatants.Col. Richard Kemp, the former commander of British troops in Afghanistan, defended the technique in a report on Israel’s 2014 war with Gaza, known in Israel as Operation Protective Edge, saying tactics like it are unparalleled in the world’s militaries.“That threshold isn’t something other nations could handle,” Kemp said. The United Nation’s report on the 2014 Gaza conflict said the practice does not deliver a clear enough warning to civilians of what’s to come.“In an area with buildings all around, how can the recipient of such a ‘roof-knock’ know which building he or she should avoid if this is not specified in the message?” the report asked.Gersten did not indicate whether or not this “roof-knocking” technique would become standard operating procedure before future coalition airstrikes, but said that upon thorough review, despite its failure in this case, commanders did not find any issues with the tactic itself.

Two people were killed and two others were injured in a shooting Tuesday night in an Arab town in northern Israel. Two men were pronounced dead after the shoot-out in I’billin, east of Haifa. One of the men was in his 30s, according to Hebrew reports. The fatalities were not immediately identified. The two other injured men were evacuated to Haifa’s Rambam Medical Center for treatment, and were in serious condition.Police arrived at the scene of the shooting and have launched an investigation. Officials said the incident was likely related to a feud between families.Israeli Arab leaders have long called on the government to confiscate illegal weapons in Arab communities, which are prevalent.

Marseille synagogue to be turned into mosque-Or Thora synagogue sold a few months ago for approximately $400,000; will reopen as Islamic prayer site next summer-By JTA April 26, 2016, 11:51 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

A synagogue in the center of the French city of Marseille was sold to a Muslim association that is planning to turn it into a mosque. The Or Thora synagogue on Saint Dominique Street near the Saint-Charles train station was sold a few months ago for approximately $400,000 to the Al Badr Association ahead of its reopening in the summer, the local daily La Provence reported Tuesday. The switch reflects a demographic shift in which, over the past 16 years, tens of thousands of Marseille Jews have left its once heavily Jewish center for the city’s more affluent suburbs, La Provence reported.Saint Dominique Street already has one mosque operated by the Al Badr Association, La Provence reported, but the group is looking for another one because it is so crowded that Muslim worshippers pray on the sidewalk on Fridays. Meanwhile, Or Thora, which has a capacity of 250, sometimes has as few as 10 worshippers.Marseille, a seaside city of 800,000, has about 250,000 Arab residents and 80,000 Jews.Responding to anti-Semitic attacks over Israel, Jews in the city have gravitated away from center and northern Marseille in favor of middle-class neighborhoods in its south in greater numbers than before the year 2000, according to Elie Berrebi, the director of Marseille’s Central Jewish Consistoire.Approximately 80 percent of Marseille’s Jews now live in that part of town, he said. Arab families also are migrating from the center northward and eastward to working-class areas. As Jews took up residence in southern Marseille, they stopped frequenting synagogues in the center, which many local Jews consider unsafe. From October to January, Marseille saw three stabbings of Jews by assailants who are believed to be Muslim or Arab.Still, according to Zvi Amar, president of the Marseille branch of the Consistoire — an organ of French Jewry responsible for supplying religious services — the overall Jewish population of Marseille has not diminished despite “the naturally occurring population shift” within its borders.“There are many synagogues left in Marseille,” he said. “There were 32 in the 1990s; now that figure is almost double.”

Palestinians unveil 20-foot Mandela statue in Ramallah-At ceremony, mayor of West Bank city says sculpture’s 30 day hold-up in Israeli customs amounted to further imprisonment-By AFP April 26, 2016, 9:50 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Palestinians on Tuesday inaugurated a giant statue of Nelson Mandela donated by the South African city of Johannesburg to their political capital in the West Bank. The six-meter (20-foot) two-ton bronze statue was a gift from Johannesburg with which Ramallah is twinned.“I think that Nelson Mandela himself would have been extremely proud of what has been done today,” Parks Tau, the mayor of the South African city, told AFP.Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas also attended the ceremony at the renamed Nelson Mandela Square in the Al-Tireh district.Mandela, who died in 2013, was South Africa’s first president after the era of apartheid, a regime of segregation that the Palestinians accuse Israel of also imposing. Israel, which does not claim sovereignty in the West Bank or Gaza, rejects the claim.Mandela was an ardent supporter of the Palestinian cause and a champion for Middle East peace.Ramallah several days ago installed huge posters celebrating the South African leader bearing his comment: “We know too well that our freedom is incomplete without the freedom of the Palestinians.”Ramallah mayor Mussa Hadid said the statue “symbolizes the shared suffering” of the South African and Palestinian peoples.During its journey to the pedestal in the West Bank, the statue was retained by Israeli customs for 30 days.“Nelson Mandela, who had already spent 28 years in the jails of the apartheid regime in South Africa, was again detained for 30 days by the Israeli authorities,” Hadid said.Tau said Israeli customs had sought duty “equivalent to 10 times the price of the statue,” but that this was not paid.Hadid said the statue sent “a clear message to the Israeli colonizer and occupier — that we are closer to freedom than you think.”

Netanyahu orders probe into school that hosted terrorist’s parents-PM tells attorney general to look into opening incitement case after East Jerusalem elementary invites family of man who killed three in bus attack to speak-By Dov Lieber and Tamar Pileggi April 26, 2016, 9:08 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday ordered the attorney general to investigate whether an East Jerusalem school that hosted the parents of a Palestinian terrorist could be prosecuted for incitement. The announcement came a day after the son of one of three men killed by Baha Allyan on a Jerusalem bus in October asked to speak at the Jabal Mukaber school, after it emerged that Allyan’s parents and brother had appeared at an event there.“Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered an inquiry into whether activity at a school in the eastern Jerusalem neighborhood of Jabel Mukaber – which invited parents of terrorists who had committed attacks to appear before pupils – constitutes incitement,” a statement from Netanyahu’s office Tuesday night read.In late March, the privately run Elementary School of Jabel Mukaber hosted officials from the Palestinian Education Ministry along with Mohammed Allyan, Baha Allyan’s father, and his mother and brother.Allyan, a 22-year-old graphic designer, was one of two terrorists from Jabel Mukaber who attacked the number 78 bus on October 13 with guns and knives, killing three. Security forces shot and killed Allyan at the scene; a second terrorist, Bilal Ranem, was captured alive.According to a Facebook post since removed from the school’s Facebook page, Allyan’s mother urged the students to use knowledge instead of weapons. The mother “taught them a great lesson whose gist is that the struggle can also be done through education, the pen, and culture and they can live their childhood with all of its hope, meaning, and dreams,” the post read. The post referred to Allyan as a martyr, which is standard practice in Palestinian society. There was no mention of what his brother and father said at the event. The school declined a Times of Israel request to comment.-Fighting incitement-Netanyahu has made stemming what he terms Palestinian incitement toward violence a central plank of his counter-terror policy, urging world leaders to pressure Ramallah to halt the glorification of killers.Jerusalem has also waged a campaign for social media platforms to remove posts they see as pushing or glorifying Palestinian terror.Micah Lakin Avni, the son of peace activist Richard Lakin, who was injured in the bus attack and died two weeks later, has also embarked on an effort to pressure Facebook over “inciting” posts. On Sunday, Avni asked the Jabal Mukaber school to allow him to speak to the students about his father’s legacy.Richard Lakin, a 76-year-old former American school principal and civil rights activist, was known for his efforts to foster Jewish-Arab coexistence. Two other Israelis were killed in the attack — Haviv Haim, 78, and Alon Govberg, 51.Avni told Israeli news site Ynet after learning that the school had invited Allyan’s family members to address students, he contacted the principal and asked him “to invite me to give a talk to show the other side of the picture, and how we can live together in coexistence by respecting each other, and resolving conflicts by talking rather than fighting.”Avni said he’d heard of several events across the West Bank where Mohammed Allyan was invited to speak, and in which Bahaa Allyan’s and others’ actions were praised. But, he said, “this is the first time I’ve seen such an event in Jerusalem, in areas that are under [Israeli] control.”Avni called “incitement was the main factor that leads to the spread of terror.”Following his father’s death, Avni launched a multi-faceted campaign against incitement on social media, including filing a class-action lawsuit against Facebook in a New York Court. In Israel, he told a Knesset committee that lawmakers must do more to combat incitement on social media, in order to help prevent more of the terrorist attacks and tragedies of the kind that befell his family.

Israeli hold on Golan ‘null and void,’ UN Security Council says-After Netanyahu vows plateau will ‘forever’ remain under Israeli control, world body expresses ‘deep concern’-By AFP and Times of Israel staff April 26, 2016, 10:37 pm

The UN Security Council on Tuesday rejected Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s assertion that the annexed Golan Heights would “forever” remain under Israeli control and expressed concern over his statements. The 15-member council agreed that the status of the Golan, which Israel captured from Syria in 1967, “remains unchanged,” said Chinese Ambassador Liu Jieyi, who holds this month’s council presidency.Liu recalled a 1981 resolution which states that Israel’s “decision to impose its laws, jurisdiction and administration in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights was null and void and without any international legal effect.”The council statement followed remarks made by Netanyahu earlier this month when his cabinet held a meeting in the territory, a first for an Israeli government.“The Golan Heights will remain in the hands of Israel forever,” Netanyahu said at the start of the meeting, held amid fears that Israel could come under pressure to return the Golan as part of a future peace deal for Syria.“Israel will never withdraw from the Golan Heights,” he said.Council members “expressed deep concern” over the Israeli statements and “stressed that the status of the Golan remains unchanged,” said Liu.Danny Danon, Israel’s Ambassador to the UN, denounced the Security Council for discussing an issue that “completely ignores the reality in the Middle East.”“While thousands of people are being massacred in Syria, and millions of citizens have become refugees, the Security Council has chosen to focus on Israel – the only true democracy in the Middle East,” Danon said in a statement Tuesday evening “It’s unfortunate that interested parties are attempting to use the council for unfair criticism of Israel,” the ambassador added.Israel captured the Golan from Syria in the 1967 Six-Day War and effectively annexed it in 1981. The international community never accepted the annexation, and Israeli leaders see in the turmoil in Syria a chance to convince the world to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan.According to a report on Israel’s Channel 2 earlier this month, the first clause of a draft agreement aimed at settling the brutal civil war in Syria, being worked on with the support of the US, Russia and other major world powers, specifies that the Golan Heights is Syrian territory and must be returned to Syria. In November, Netanyahu reportedly asked US President Barack Obama to recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the area, given the civil war. Obama refused to even reply, according to Israeli media accounts.Netanyahu’s statement on holding the Golan drew alarm and condemnation internationally, including from Israel’s allies and from Syria.Deputy Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad warned in response that his war-torn state would retake the plateau by any means necessary. The Arab League, European Union and the United States also objected to Netanyahu’s remarks on the strategic plateau, among others.

Police, Muslims skirmish on Temple Mount after Jewish visitors bow down-No immediate reports of arrests, injuries; security forces eject eight Jews who violated ban on Jewish prayer at contested site-By Ilan Ben Zion and Judah Ari Gross April 26, 2016, 12:36 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Minor clashes broke out between Muslim worshipers and Israeli police on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem on Tuesday after two Jewish men who entered the contested holy site bowed down in prayer, violating rules of entry to the compound. They were set upon by Muslims at the site and were immediately escorted away by police.A brawl ensued between police and Muslims. There were no immediate reports of injuries in the clashes.A total of eight Jewish visitors were removed by Israel Police officers from the Temple Mount on Tuesday morning for violating an Israeli ban on Jewish prayer on the flashpoint holy site, considered the holiest in Judaism, and the third holiest in Islam. It is forbidden for Jews to pray on the Temple Mount, which is known by Muslims as the Al-Aqsa compound, according to a 1967 Knesset ministerial committee decision. Though heavily contested by right-wing activist groups, this rule has been upheld by courts. Those found doing so are ejected from the site, and frequent violators of this rule can be issued restraining orders from the Temple Mount. The eight men were not arrested, but were instead taken away from the site. It wasn’t clear whether any of the Muslim men who clashed with police were arrested, a police spokesperson said.A video from the incident uploaded by a Palestinian news site on social media showed two young Jewish men prostrating themselves on the ground on the Temple Mount, surrounded by police, at the moment when the skirmish began.During the clash, Muslim worshipers could be heard chanting in Arabic, “God is great” and “With blood we will redeem Al-Aqsa.”Israeli security forces beefed up their presence around the Old City of Jerusalem and the Temple Mount compound ahead of this week’s Passover holiday to prevent violence. The Temple Mount was the site of two Jewish temples in antiquity and it is considered the holiest site in Judaism. Muslims deem the Al-Aqsa Mosque, which sits atop the mount, their third holiest site, after Mecca and Medina.

Shut Dimona nuclear reactor, urges founding scientist-Aging facility ‘may be world’s oldest reactor,’ says Uzi Even, after 1,537 defects found at aluminum core; says Israel couldn’t build new one without international help-By Times of Israel staff April 26, 2016, 8:47 pm

A scientist who was among the founders of the Dimona nuclear reactor on Tuesday said the 53-year-old facility should be shuttered for safety reasons, after a report detailed over 1,500 problems with the aging plant.Dr. Uzi Even, a former Meretz party member, was responding to a report that said breakthrough ultrasound testing has revealed 1,537 defects and flaws at the aluminum core in Israel’s nuclear facility situated near the southern city.Scientists who studied the aging nuclear reactor last year said that, for now, the defects don’t pose any immediate danger. The findings were released during a scientific forum held in Tel Aviv this month, Haaretz reported Tuesday, the 30th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.“It doesn’t come as a surprise. I’ve been warning about this possibility for many years,” Even told Israel Radio.“It may be the oldest reactor in the world,” he said, adding that many of the nuclear plants built around the world in the 1960s have been shuttered.Even urged Israel to halt operations at the site.“If you’re asking me if there is a point in continuing operating a 53-year-old reactor, the answer is certainly not,” he said. The nuclear physicist also criticized the limited monitoring at the nuclear site. Although Israel is not a signatory to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons — and is therefore not subject to scrutiny by the International Atomic Energy Agency — it has voluntarily accepted to operate in accordance with the IAEA’s safety regulations. An independent commission monitoring the reactor reports directly to the prime minister.Only once has this commission revoked the operating license of a reactor for safety issues, according to Haaretz.Even said Israel would not be able to build a new nuclear plant without international help, nor can it renovate the aging reactor in southern Israel.Israel doesn’t have the capabilities to build a new reactor, he said, adding that “there is no one in the world who will agree to sell us such a reactor unless we sign” the non-proliferation treaty. Moreover, it cannot manufacture the parts needed to repair the site, he maintained.“It had a very specific goal when it was founded in the 60s. But 50 years is a long time, and a lot has changed,” he said.At the same time, he maintained that there had been no leaks from the reactor, as far as he knows, since it was built. The site is far smaller than those in Chernobyl or Fukashima, he said, and any fallout in the event of a leak would therefore be on a smaller scale. However, he said Israel ought to preemptively close down the site. The core’s reactor is made of cement-coated metal. The fuel rods are inserted into the core, where nuclear fusion takes place. Over the years, the core absorbs tremendous amounts of heat and radiation, which slowly cause a degeneration of its materials. The Dimona core, which was provided by France in the 1950s and put into action in 1963, was intended to be operational for up to 40 years. But it has exceeded the intended time frame by over a decade, to the consternation of scientists at the site, the Haaretz report said. When US diplomatic cables were leaked to the public as part of the WikiLeaks scandal, a telegram by the US Embassy revealed that in 2007 Prof. Eli Abramov, then deputy director general of the reactor, briefed senior Americans and told them the reactor’s systems were being changed. But, according to Abramov, the core cannot be replaced as a solitary unit, and so a whole new facility must be built in order to accommodate a new one.In light of the delicate state of the nuclear core, the reactor is not operated as often as it used to be, the report said.

Etched in their mind: Ukraine marks 30 years since Chernobyl-World’s worst nuclear accident killed thousands and spewed radiation across Europe, forcing a global rethink of atomic fuel-By DMYTRO VLASOV April 26, 2016, 7:57 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — With flowers, candles, anger and tears, Ukraine on Tuesday marked the 30th anniversary of the explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear plant, the world’s worst nuclear accident. Some survivors said the chaos of that time is etched in their minds forever.Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko led a ceremony in Chernobyl, where work is underway to complete a 2 billion euro ($2.25 billion) long-term shelter over the building containing Chernobyl’s exploded reactor. Once the structure is in place, work will begin to remove the reactor and its lava-like radioactive waste. The disaster shone a spotlight on lax safety standards and government secrecy in the former Soviet Union. The explosion on April 26, 1986, was not reported by Soviet authorities for two days, and then only after winds had carried the fallout across Europe and Swedish experts had gone public with their concerns.“We honor those who lost their health and require a special attention from the government and society,” Poroshenko said. “It’s with an everlasting pain in our hearts that we remember those who lost their lives to fight nuclear death.”About 600,000 people, often referred to as Chernobyl’s “liquidators,” were sent in to fight the fire at the nuclear plant and clean up the worst of its contamination. Thirty workers died either from the explosion or from acute radiation sickness within several months. The accident exposed millions in the region to dangerous levels of radiation and forced a wide-scale, permanent evacuation of hundreds of towns and villages in Ukraine and Belarus. The final death toll from Chernobyl is subject to speculation, due to the long-term effects of radiation, but ranges from an estimate of 9,000 by the World Health Organization to one of a possible 90,000 by the environmental group Greenpeace. The Ukrainian government, however, has since scaled back benefits for Chernobyl survivors, making many feel betrayed by their own country.“I went in there when everyone was fleeing, we were going right into the heat,” said Mykola Bludchiy, who arrived in the Chernobyl exclusion zone on May 5, just days after the explosion. “And today everything is forgotten. It’s a disgrace.”He spoke Tuesday after a ceremony in Kiev, where top officials were laying wreaths to a Chernobyl memorial. In neighboring Belarus, where over 470 towns and villages had to be permanently evacuated due to radiation from Chernobyl, opposition activists were holding street protests later Tuesday in the capital of Minsk to urge the government to take more vigorous action to tackle the aftermath of the disaster. At midnight on Monday, a Chernobyl vigil was held in the Ukrainian town of Slavutych, where many former Chernobyl workers were relocated.Thirty years later, many could not hold back the tears as they brought flowers and candles to a memorial for the workers killed in the explosion. Some of the former liquidators dressed in white robes and caps for the memorial, just like the ones they had worn so many years ago.Andriy Veprev, who had worked at the Chernobyl nuclear plant for 14 years before the explosion and helped to clean up the contamination, said memories of the mayhem in 1986 were still vivid in his mind.“I’m proud of those guys who were with me and who are not with us now,” he said.In Russia, President Vladimir Putin, in a message to the liquidators, called the Chernobyl disaster “a grave lesson for all of mankind.”
