If scientists confirm the explosion was due to a meteorite, it would be the first recorded human fatality due to a falling space rock.According to local reports, a bus driver was killed on Saturday when a meteorite landed in the area where he was walking, damaging the window panes of nearby buses and buildings. Three other people were injured.Did Ars geek out over Moon rocks, bits of the Sun, and Martian meteorites? Oh yes—Ars did.On Sunday, various Indian publications, including The Hindu, reported that the chief minister of Tamil Nadu, Jayalalithaa, issued a statement confirming the death: "A mishap occurred yesterday when a meteorite fell in the campus of a private engineering college in Vellore district's K Pantharappalli village." Tamil Nadu is located in southern India, and has a population of more than 70 million people.There have been no confirmed human deaths due to meteorite strikes, although there have been a number of interesting close calls, based upon a list kept by International Comet Quarterly. For example, meteorites have landed in homes and hit people as they have slept, but have not killed them.In our most recent close call, a bright fireball created a huge airblast over Chelyabinsk, Russia, in 2013. An asteroid was discovered in 2013 – TX68 – which just might hit Earth in March 2016.What are the facts? According to the video below (enter the search words from the screenshot image if the embedded video doesn’t work) asteroid TX68 will be approximately 55 meters wide, which would weigh an estimated 200,000 tons compared to smaller meteors discussed in the video. If it does hit the Earth, it would probably be traveling at least 14,000 miles per hour. That won’t be an ELE (Extinction Level Event) but it would make quite a tsunami splash if it did hit the Atlantic. But can we accurately predict its path that well in advance? The video shows current models predicting its most likely course will have it pass by our planet at a distance of just over 0.00016AU or 0.06LD. AU = Astronomical Unit = the distance from Earth to the Sun. So the estimated closest distance is just one six-thousandth the distance to the sun. LD = Lunar Distance = distance to the Moon, so about one seventeeth of the distance to the moon. Now based on those numbers, I calculate that means it would pass about 15,000 miles from the Earth – closer than many of our satellites orbiting around 22,000 miles high – and more importantly, close enough to be well within the margin of error for impact at this early stage in guesstimating the path of the asteroid. Because a lot depends on EXACTLY how tight the orbit gets on the closest approach to the sun and that depends on outgassing near perihelion, which is still ahead of us. Any frozen pockets of gases within the asteroid, which get heated near the sun and explode out, could veer the asteroid to one side and lead to significant course corrections – putting Earth well within the range of its possible paths.But my math, which yields results that are alarming enough, may be incorrect. The guy who made the video did his own calculations and clearly says in the video that the estimated path of the asteroid is less than 4,000 miles away. (3982 miles) If he is right, hopefully that number is the closest it gets to any point on the surface of the Earth, and not to a specific point (like a specific NASA facility) because that pretty much means it could hit somewhere else on the side of the Earth because our planet is almost 8,000 miles across. This is like saying a bullet will miss someone’s head by a foot – that could mean it hits them in the chest.Time will tell what really happens soon enough.I am CERTAIN there will be a HUGE crisis no later than the spring of 2016, which will allow for chaos, collapse, martial law, dictatorship, and the fulfillment of major end times Bible prophecy by mid-2016. The death toll from a powerful earthquake that toppled a high-rise apartment building in Taiwan rose to at least 34, according to government figures Monday, with rescuers digging through rubble for survivors more than 48 hours after the quake struck.More than 100 are believed to be still buried in the collapsed building from a disaster that struck during the most important family holiday in the Chinese calendar — the Lunar New Year holiday.The government in Tainan, the worst-hit city, said that more than 170 people had been rescued alive from the 17-story building, which folded like an accordion after the quake struck.Mao Yi-chen, 20, was rescued soon after the magnitude-6.4 quake hit before dawn Saturday, and her older sister Mao Yi-hsuan was pulled out Sunday in serious condition. Iran backs away from petrodollar: Wants oil sold in Euro-feb 7,16

Iran wants to recover tens of billions of dollars it is owed by India and other buyers of its oil in euros and is billing new crude sales in euros, too, looking to reduce its dependence on the U.S. dollar following last month’s sanctions relief.A source at state-owned National Iranian Oil Co (NIOC) told Reuters that Iran will charge in euros for its recently signed oil contracts with firms including French oil and gas major Total, Spanish refiner Cepsa and Litasco, the trading arm of Russia’s Lukoil.“In our invoices we mention a clause that buyers of our oil will have to pay in euros, considering the exchange rate versus the dollar around the time of delivery,” the NIOC source said.Lukoil and Total declined to comment, while Cepsa did not respond to a request for comment.Iran has also told its trading partners who owe it billions of dollars that it wants to be paid in euros rather than U.S. dollars, said the person, who has direct knowledge of the matter.Iran was allowed to recover some of the funds frozen under U.S.-led sanctions in currencies other than dollars, such as the Omani rial and UAE dhiram.Switching oil sales to euros makes sense as Europe is now one of Iran’s biggest trading partners.“Many European companies are rushing to Iran for business opportunities, so it makes sense to have revenue in euros,” said Robin Mills, chief executive of Dubai-based Qamar Energy.Iran has pushed for years to have the euro replace the dollar as the currency for international oil trade. In 2007, Tehran failed to persuade OPEC members to switch away from the dollar, which its then President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called a “worthless piece of paper”.The NIOC source said Iran’s central bank instituted a policy while the country was under sanctions over its disputed nuclear program to carry out foreign trade in euros.“Iran shifted to the euro and canceled trade in dollars because of political reasons,” the source said.-BOOST FOR EURO TRADE-Iran has the world’s fourth-largest proved reserves of crude oil, and expects to quickly increase production, which could lead to tens of billions of euros worth of new oil trade.Iran’s insistence on being paid in euros rather than dollars is also a sign of an uneasy truce between Tehran and Washington even after last month’s lifting of most sanctions.U.S. officials estimate about $100 billion (69 billion pound) of Iranian assets were frozen abroad, around half of which Tehran could access as a result of sanctions relief.It is not clear how much of those funds are oil dues that Iran would want back in euros.India owes Tehran about $6 billion for oil delivered during the sanctions years.Last month, NIOC’s director general for international affairs told Reuters that Iran “would prefer to receive (oil money owed) in some foreign currency, which for the time being is going to be euro.”Indian government sources confirmed Iran is looking to be paid in euros.Tehran has asked to be paid using the exchange rates at the time the oil was delivered, along with interest for those payment delays, Indian and Iranian sources said.Indian officials are working on a mechanism that could involve local banks United Commercial Bank (UCO) and IDBI Bank for handling payments to Iran, one Indian government source said.UCO CEO R.K. Takkar said the bank is involved in payments to Iran, but did not say if there were any plans to change the payment mechanism. Venezuela and Saudi Arabia, the biggest exporter, are both members of OPEC, which supplies about 40 percent of the world’s oil.“I’m very happy to meet and consult with my colleague Venezuelan Oil Minister Eulogio Del Pino,” Naimi said in the statement. “It was a successful meeting in a positive atmosphere,” he said, without elaborating.Del Pino met with al-Naimi after visiting Russia, Iran, Qatar, and Oman on a tour to drum up support for Venezuela’s attempt to buttress oil prices. Amid the normal consensus of bullish calls for stocks in 2016, evidence is mounting that Wall Street strategists are losing their resolve as everything from China to oil and interest rates roil markets.Just five weeks into 2016, seven of the 21 strategists tracked by Bloomberg have lowered their projections for the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index amid a rout that wiped more than $2 trillion from prices. The cuts have reduced the average annual estimate, the first time that’s happened this early in a year since the Iraq war in 2003.Trepidation among forecasters renowned for their unabashed bullishness adds to worries at a time when surprises are piling up, from the worst January in seven years to repeated bank stock selloffs and wild swings in the price of oil. The gap between the highest and lowest strategist estimate has swelled to 325 points, the biggest spread at this point since 2012.“The reason there’s more divergence among forecasters is that equity strategists have a huge problem with predicting two wild cards right now: China and oil,” said Michael Purves, chief global strategist at Weeden & Co. in Greenwich, Connecticut. “We obviously need earnings growth, but that’s oil-dependent, and China is a huge sentiment factor and a global growth contributor. Central banks can take the edge off a little bit but they can’t directly address the two.”The S&P 500 is down 8 percent in 2016, the worst start to a year since 2008. The consensus estimate was 2,245 as recently as Nov. 30.Tobias Levkovich, Citigroup Inc.’s chief U.S. equity strategist, says the S&P 500 could fall as low as 1,870, another 0.5 percent below its current level. While the market has already approached that level once, closing at 1,859.33 on Jan. 20, he sees another dip possible as long as investors remain concerned about economic growth in China and highly correlated trading between stocks and oil.“The toughest problem for people to deal with is oil getting linked with the market,” said Levkovich, who has a year-end forecast of 2,150. “Another one of the biggest risks is with China, with people really worried that it goes through a ‘hard landing.’ We don’t have a singular way to kill these threats.”Levkovich’s 2016 price target is 150 points lower than that of John Stoltzfus, the New York-based chief market strategist at Oppenheimer & Co., who has the second most-bullish estimate compiled by Bloomberg. Beijing (AFP) - China’s foreign exchange reserves have fallen to their lowest level in more than three years, the central bank said Sunday, as Beijing sells dollars to stop the yuan from depreciating further.The world's largest currency hoard shrank by $99.5 billion in January to some $3.2 trillion, the People’s Bank of China said on its website, the lowest since May 2012.Worries about China's economy have pushed the yuan to a five-year low. Women’s prayer: A voice from the heart-February 7, 2016, 2:39 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

I understand that I’m not the typical Jew who prays at the Kotel. I’m not even sure I can label myself. In fact, I think it would be a lot easier for the rest of the world if there was such a label. My home is kosher, I keep laws of taharat ha-mishpachah (family purity), I am shomer Shabbat, I pray in an Orthodox shul in the Jewish suburbs of Detroit, Michigan and look forward to moving back to Israel in the future. Prayer is very important to me. Yet, I personally struggle with prayer and the lack of options available in my community.I am not Conservative or Reform. I believe a minyan consists of ten Jewish men. Yet, every morning when I daven, I wear a tallit and lay tefillin. Mostly, I daven at home because these practices simply wouldn’t be welcome in the shul I would attend. On Shabbat, it’s the most difficult. Women can’t kiss the Torah, touch it, or even get close. To be honest, I feel so far away from Torah sometimes I cry. But I feel like HaShem sent me here for a reason.I teach Talmud to students who have never been exposed to Jewish texts before. So, for now, I just bear the separation until I can go back to Israel. I understand that everyone, men and women, connect to HaShem, tefilla, and their Judaism in different ways. Some people love to pray and it comes naturally to them, some dive into Halakhah, some are blessed with an abundance of joy on Shabbat. I understand that many people may judge, criticize, or simply not understand the things that make/help me feel connected to HaShem, as my ways aren’t widely practiced in our tradition.Yet, despite the things or people that made me feel far from Torah, there is one place that always made me feel close. I had the Kotel. For years, I have loved going to the Kotel. Whether it was on the holiday of Shavuot, after studying all night, as a tour guide taking a group of American teens there for their first time, going to beg HaShem for healing because someone I loved was sick, supporting a friend being sworn into the IDF, crying on the stones the night before I had to fly to America because leaving Israel is never easy. Whatever the reason, the Kotel was always there to witness my happiness, struggles, pain, celebrations and to soak up my tears and prayers.After my first year back in the US, I returned to Israel for the summer. On Rosh Chodesh Tammuz, my birthday, HaShem gave me another blessing: surrounded by other women, in the women’s section, I read the day’s Torah reading from a Sefer Torah — the actual scroll — with tallit and tefillin. In the hopes of not sounding too much like one of my high school students, but for lack of a better phrase: it was AMAZING! For many years, I have loved davening — at the Kotel and other places — with women. The tefilla is an immensely fulfilling experience and I always leave feeling uplifted. Women’s tefilla provides a unique space that I haven’t found in other sacred spaces. That is true whether we are praying together once a month simply because we can, or if there is a special celebration, or if, God-forbid, someone is sick and we join our voices together for stronger prayer, or even if a woman who feels comfortable participating publicly only in an all-women service wants to read the Torah. I am able to be vulnerable when I daven with women, and share with them why I’m davening, what I need, and any personal struggles.Once, I remember saying in the middle of davening, “Ladies, please pray hard! I want to find my bashert (soulmate).” I truly felt them davening for me and I know I never would have shared that in a space with men. Why? As women, we simply have a special bond and we have similar experiences. After the service, one woman I didn’t know assured me that I would find him soon (it still took a couple of years to find him). I felt very uplifted, as the search had begun to feel never-ending at times. I have also been on the other side, where a co-worshiper asked me to daven for them. Praying next to her, for her, made my prayer even stronger.Women’s tefilla is not a new phenomenon. The earliest recorded women’s tefilla took place in New York City in 1969 (Read about the history, development and structure of halakic women’s tefilla here). It’s no wonder that women started praying together at the Kotel more than twenty-seven years ago.Why has HaShem placed yet another barrier in our way to praying peacefully together at the Kotel with a Sefer Torah, tallit and tefillin? I have no idea. A few things I know: I won’t go to Robinson’s Arch to pray. Not because I’m mad, but because the new deal simply doesn’t provide a space for me, a space for Orthodox (and non-Orthodox) women only to daven together.Also, I want to pray where my grandparents prayed. My grandmother didn’t weep at Robinson’s Arch; she lamented at the Kotel with all of the other Jews. The deal itself is disappointing. I may cry when the construction is over and there are signs for Jews to make a decision about where to pray instead of praying together. The sign that says “pluralistic area” that will be hidden behind the huge Mughrabi bridge and that won’t be visible from the current Kotel area might as well say “non-Jews” to the ultra-Orthodox.No matter what happens, I won’t stop davening at the Kotel with my tallit and tefillin (Please make donations when that happens to help bail me out of jail). Nor will I give up on our lawsuit against the government to let women use Sifrei Torah in the women’s section.Like most things in my life, I know this is part of a bigger plan that I simply cannot comprehend right now. I pray that at the end, when HaShem resolves this, the plan will be more unifying than dividing, no one’s rights will be given away, and no one will have to be hidden behind a bridge to be the kind of Jews they want to be, in order to pray at the Kotel.

Israeli leader calls on world to condemn arson of synagogue-Associated Press-feb 7,16-yahoonews

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday called on the world to condemn a suspected arson attack against a makeshift synagogue in the West Bank where Jewish Torah scrolls were burned.The scrolls were stored inside a tent that was used as a synagogue near a West Bank outpost that overlooked the site where the bodies of three Jewish teenagers were found in June 2014. Their abduction and murder was carried out by Palestinians said by Israel to be members of the militant group Hamas and set off a series of events that ultimately led to that summer's 50-day war in Gaza.Netanyahu said this weekend's desecration of the makeshift synagogue that was named after the teenagers was a result of the type of Palestinian incitement that has fed the current five-month-long wave of Palestinian violence."We will do everything to find who did this and bring them to justice but I expect all those, here and around the world, who justifiably condemn any desecration of a mosque ... to equally cry out about this heinous act," he said at the start of his weekly Cabinet meeting.Israel has been coping for years with vandalism attacks against mosques and churches that have been blamed on Jewish extremists.
