HOARDING OF GOLD AND SILVER

JAMES 5:1-3
1 Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you.
2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten.
3 Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.

REVELATION 18:10,17,19
10 Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.(IN 1 HR THE STOCK MARKETS WORLDWIDE WILL CRASH)
17 For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off,
19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate.

EZEKIEL 7:19
19 They shall cast their silver in the streets, and their gold shall be removed:(CONFISCATED) their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD: they shall not satisfy their souls, neither fill their bowels: because it is the stumblingblock of their iniquity.

LUKE 2:1-3
1 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.
2  (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)
3  And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.

REVELATION 13:16-18
16 And he(THE FALSE POPE WHO DEFECTED FROM THE CHRISTIAN FAITH) causeth all,(IN THE WORLD ) both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:(MICROCHIP IMPLANT)
17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark,(MICROCHIP IMPLANT) or the name of the beast,(WORLD DICTATORS NAME INGRAVED ON YOUR SKIN OR TATTOOED ON YOU OR IN THE MICROCHIP IMPLANT) or the number of his name.(THE NUMBERS OF HIS NAME INGRAVED IN THE MICROCHIP IMLPLANT)-(ALL THESE WILL TELL THE WORLD DICTATOR THAT YOUR WITH HIM AND AGAINST KING JESUS-GOD)
18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast:(WORLD LEADER) for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.(6-6-6) A NUMBER SYSTEM (6006006)OR(60020202006)(SOME KIND OF NUMBER IMPLANTED IN THE MICROCHIP THAT TELLS THE WORLD DICTATOR AND THE NEW WORLD ORDER THAT YOU GIVE YOUR TOTAL ALLIGIENCE TO HIM AND NOT JESUS)(ITS AN ETERNAL DECISION YOU MAKE)(YOU CHOOSE YOUR OWN DESTINY)(YOU TAKE THE DICTATORS NAME OR NUMBER UNDER YOUR SKIN,YOUR DOOMED TO THE LAKE OF FIRE AND TORMENTS FOREVER,NEVER ENDING MEANT ONLY FOR SATAN AND HIS ANGELS,NOT HUMAN BEINGS).OR YOU REFUSE THE MICROCHIP IMPLANT AND GO ON THE SIDE OF KING JESUS AND RULE FOREVER WITH HIM ON EARTH.YOU CHOOSE,ITS YOUR DECISION.

REVELATION 6:5-6
5 And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand.
6 And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine.(A DAYS WAGES FOR A LOAF OF BREAD)

EARTHQUAKES

EZEKIEL 37:7,11-14
7  So I prophesied as I was commanded: and as I prophesied, there was a noise, and behold a shaking, and the bones came together, bone to his bone.(POSSIBLE QUAKE BRINGS ISRAEL BACK TO LIFE-SO NOISE AND SHAKING-QUAKES WILL ALSO DESTROY ISRAELS ENEMIES)
11  Then he said unto me, Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel: behold, they say, Our bones are dried, and our hope is lost: we are cut off for our parts.
12  Therefore prophesy and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, O my people, I will open your graves, and cause you to come up out of your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel.
13  And ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I have opened your graves, O my people, and brought you up out of your graves,
14  And shall put my spirit in you, and ye shall live, and I shall place you in your own land: then shall ye know that I the LORD have spoken it, and performed it, saith the LORD.

MATTHEW 24:7-8
7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.
8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.

MARK 13:8
8 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom:(ETHNIC GROUP AGAINST ETHNIC GROUP) and there shall be earthquakes in divers places, and there shall be famines and troubles: these are the beginnings of sorrows.

LUKE 21:11
11 And great earthquakes shall be in divers places,(DIFFERNT PLACES AT THE SAME TIME) and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.

MURDER

JEREMIAH 1:5
5  Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee;(GOD ORDAINED OR LIVES BEFORE WE WERE EVEN CREATED IN A WOMANS BODY)(GOD NEVER CREATED ANYONE HOMOSEXUAL)(AND THIS TELLS US ABORTION IS MURDER) and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.

GENESIS 4:8-11 (THE FIRST MURDER)
8 And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.
9 And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother's keeper?
10 And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground.
11 And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand;

GENESIS 6:11-13 (EARTH DESTROYED BECAUSE OF TERRORISM,MURDERS)
11 The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence.
12 And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.
13 And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.

JOHN 8:44
44  Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

EXODUS 20:13
13 Thou shalt not kill.(Murder)(THAT INCLUDES ABORTION)

MATTHEW 18:6

EXODUS 21:12
12 He that smiteth (MURDER)a man,(OR BABY) so that he die, shall be surely put to death.(THATS THE DEATH PENALTY PEOPLE)

21 Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries,(DRUG ADDICTIONS) nor of their fornication,(SEX OUTSIDE OF MARRIAGE) nor of their thefts.(STEALING)

UPDATE-DECEMBER 09,2015-05:30PM
WELL SO MUCH FOR JUST WOMEN AND SMALL CHILDREN REFUGEE MIGRANTS COMING TO CANADA LIKE THE LIBERALS PROMISED. THE CBC JUST HAD ON 8 FAMILY MEMBERS FROM SYRIA THAT JUST MOVED TO SCARBORO ONTARIO 2 DAYS AGO.THE 8 FAMILY MEMBERS WILL BE HOUSED IN 2 APARTMENTS ONE ON TOP OF THE OTHER.ITS AN AREA WITH COSHER MUSLIM STORES AND LOTS OF ARABIC SPEAKING ARAB-MUSLIMS.THE FAMILY WILL BE SPLIT-PROBABLY 4 LIVING IN EACH APARTMENT. BUT THE THING I AM WORRIED ABOUT IS THIS IS NO FAMILY WITH A LOT OF YOUNG CHILDREN. LIKE THE LIBERALS CLAIMED WOULD BE COMING TO CANADA.THERES ONE AT LEAST 20 YEAR OLD GIRL.BUT THERES AT LEAST 3 MALE CHILDREN-WHAT LOOKS LIKE AROUND 16 TO 24 AGE AREA.WHICH IS THE PRIME AGE OF ISLAMIC TERRORISTS.IF THIS IS A SIGN OF THE SO CALLED WOMEN-SMALL CHILDREN REFUGEE PLAN.THE LIBERALS FAILED RIGHT OFF. WITH AT LEAST 3 MALES OF TERRORIST AGE FROM SYRIA.AND ALSO ON THE SEGMENT I HEARD THE GUY SAY.THEY NEED TO HAVE $20,000 FOR A FAMILY OF 4 TO GET STARTED.SO THIS FAMILY OF 8 WILL BE GETTING $40,000 DOLLARS SPENT ON THEM.AND THE GUY NEVER SAID IF THATS THE WHOLE YEAR.OR WHAT.THIS $40,000 DOLLARS.I WISH THE GOVERNMENT WOULD PAY MY RENT FOR A FULL YEAR LIKE WHAT WILL HAPPEN WITH THIS ONE FAMILY. AND ALL THE OTHERS HAT COME TO ONTARIO AND CANADA.AND THE HOST DID SAY LIKE I FIGURED. THAT MOST OF THE FAMILIES WILL BE COMING TO TORONO ONTARIO AREA.I SURE COULD USE $10,000 DOLLARS SO I COULD PAY MY RENT FOR A YEAR CLEAR. THATS $6,240.00 AND HAVE $3,760.00 LEFT SO I COULD STOCK UP ON LOTS OF FOOD.SO WHEN WINTER COMES AROUND-I COULD KEEP MY HYDRO HEAT ON AND AFFORD A $250.00 DOLLAR A MONTH HYDRO BILL WITHOUT WORRYING ABOUT WERE MY FOOD WILL COME FROM IF MY HYDRO BILL IS SO HIGH.AND I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE ON DISABILITY THAT HAS TO KEEP A TIGHT GRIP ON MY FUNDS.SO I CAN COVER ALL MY BILLS EACH MONTH.BUT SO MUCH FOR THE LIBERALS PROMISE RIGHT OFF THAT ONLY WOMAN AND SMALL CHILDREN FAMILIES WOULD BE COMING TO CANADA AS MIGRANTS FROM JORDAN-LEBANON AND TURKEY. THE FIRST PLANE OF 160 REFUGEES WILL COME FROM JORDAN TO TORONTO TOMORROW NIGHT AT 9PM.AND THE 2ND PLANE LOAD FROM JORDAN WILL COME SATURDAY TO MONTREAL.PROBABLY ANOTHER 160.AS OF NOW SINCE NOV 4,15-416 SYRIAN MIGRANTS ARE SETTLED IN CANADA ALREADY. I WONDER HOW MANY OF THESE MUSLIM SO CALLED FAMILIES HAVE BOYS 16 YEARS OF AGE AND OLDER. I WOULD LOVE TO KNOW.TO SEE HOW MANY MUSLIM MEN REALLY WILL BE IN CANADA.ALREADY 3 OF THIS FAMILY OF 8 ARE NOT NO SMALL CHILDREN-BUT TERRORIST AGE MEN 16 OR OVER.WE WANT THE BEST FOR THESE MUSLIMS.BUT IF THESE MUSLIM MEN GET RADICALIZED AND HATE CANADA.WE WILL BE IN GRAVE TROUBLE.OR IF THEY WOULD BE RADICALIZED IN THE MOSQUE IN SCARBORO.LOOKOUT IS ALL I WOULD SAY.WE WILL SEE AFTER A YEAR OR SO HOW CANADA IS HANDLING ALL THESE REFUGEES.AND IF THE LIBERALS REALLY DID SCREEN THEM PROPERLY.ONLY TIME WILL TELL.AND WE JUST PRAY THEY WERE SCREENED PROPERLY.SO CANADA WILL HAVE NO TROUBLE LIKE NO-GO ZONES LIKE FRANCE-ENGLAND AND MANY OTHER WESTERN COUNTRIES WERE ISLAMIC-MUSLIMS ARE INTEGRATED IN TO.GERMANY WITH 1 MILLION MUSLIM REFUGEES INGRAVED IN THEIR COUNTRY JUST THIS YEAR ALONE.WILL BE THE NEXT COUNTRY FULL OF NO-GO ZONE-SHARIA LAW ISLAMIC-MUSLIM DO NOT GO NEAR AREAS.WERE NOT EVEN POLICE WILL GO NEAR THE AREA BECAUSE OF HOW CRIMINAL AND DANGEROUS THESE AREAS ARE.I JUST HOPE THEIR WILL BE NO - NO-GO ZONES IN ONTARIO ESPECIALLY THE TORONTO AREA WERE MOST OF THESE 25,000 SYRIAN REFUGEE FAMILIES WILL BE LIVING.
Rakan -Recently arrived Syrian refugee family in their temporary home in Vaughan. Father and mother are - Rakan and Houda. Kids (from left) are - Najeeb, 19, Eaman, 17, Nourhan, 13 (behind), Ebraheem, 9 and Talha, 10. (Ernest Doroszuk/Toronto Sun)--ARE THESE WOMEN AND SMALL AGED CHILDREN LIKE THE LIBERALS PROMISED THE 25,000 FAMILIES OF REFUGEES WOULD BE MIGRATING TO CANADA BY THE END OF 2015.AND BY FEB 29,16.

UPDATE-DECEMBER 10,2015-12:00AM
DONALD TRUMP WANTS ISLAMIC-MUSLIMS STOPPED FROM COMING INTO AMERICA. Former refugees say newcomers will seize their 'golden opportunities' in Canada-By Jennifer Graham, The Canadian Press | The Canadian Press – DEC 9,15-YAHOONEWS

REGINA - Haidah Amirzadeh was seven months pregnant and couldn't speak English when she arrived as a refugee in Saskatoon in 1989.Zahra Darzi fled Iran with her two young daughters after her husband was executed. She claimed refugee status once she arrived in Regina in1991.Amirzadeh is now a lawyer specializing in immigration and refugee law who teaches at the University of Saskatchewan. Darzi is an engineer working at Saskatchewan's government-owned telephone utility. Both say they came to Canada looking for an opportunity to succeed and both seized it. As Canada prepares to bring in at least 10,000 Syrian refugees by the end of the year, the women say they want to remind people that, while many will come with little, it won't take long for them to get on their feet."I think, especially when somebody has been in such a difficult situation for so long, when they arrive to an opportunity, they really grab onto it," says Amirzadeh. "Nobody really wants to be a burden."Amirzadeh left Iran and spent 18 months as a refugee in Turkey before settling in Canada. She recalls waiting to be selected, interviewed and picked. There was a lot of anxiety about being rejected.Once in Canada, she learned English and put herself through law school." There are a lot of people who come with nothing, with no English, with no support, and then within a few years they become so successful, it's amazing. They start a business or they get some professional training or, if they were themselves professionally trained, they can convert it to Canadian certification and get going here."Like Amirzadeh, Darzi couldn't speak English when she arrived in Canada. The single mom's first priority was to settled her kids. She then set out to learn English. She obtained a degree in electronic systems engineering from the University of Regina. At first, Darzi says, some of the male engineering students made fun of her accent, but she wasn't discouraged."I said anything I want. I can do it. Anything is possible for me."Darzi says she thinks refugees will be successful because they recognize "golden opportunities" in Canada."I have found so many refugees in Canada that are successful people. There are doctors. There are engineers. They are successful people, good parents. They are role models."Getachew Woldeyesus, a former refugee from Ethiopia who is now settlement and family services manager with the Regina Open Door Society, says refugees will need help initially. But he notes that history has shown many refugees go on to need little social assistance.Woldeyesus says people shouldn't discount the knowledge that the Syrians will bring with them."People assume all the Syrians are not educated and I can tell you ... these people are way more educated. They are doing jobs that are highly professional. Some of them are doctors, bankers, engineers, but I don't think anybody's talking about that," he said."They are talking about them as if they are not educated and that we need to educate them here. That's not what's happening, what the reality is."

Syrian refugees won't 'jump the queue' for housing and citizenship, John McCallum says-CBC – DEC 9,15-YAHOONEWS

Syrian refugees won't move to the front of the line for social housing or Canadian citizenship, Immigration Minister John McCallum said today. As the first flights of Syrian refugees bound for Canada prepare for takeoff, McCallum said the Liberal government is "very sensitive" to some concerns that the new arrivals will have higher priority for jobs, housing or citizenship."We do have to be careful that the refugees not be seen to queue jump, if you will," he said. With extended waits to gain Canadian citizenship, the refugees will have to apply and wait like everyone else and should not expect it "overnight," McCallum said. The minister said he has also heard from mayors of cities where residents having been waiting months or even years for social housing."I don't think it would be popular among those who have been waiting to long if refugees come in and suddenly go to the front of the line," he said.McCallum said Canadians have a "large welcoming attitude," and the government must encourage and foster that by acting in a "prudent fashion.""It is a balance we have to strike," the minister said. "On the one hand, I do think a large majority want to welcome these people coming from the scourge of civil war to our country, and make them feel comfortable, help them adjust and hope they will get jobs. But at the same time, we don't want to put them in a privileged position relative to other Canadians who are themselves working hard to find housing, to become citizens and so on."Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to make an announcement today with details about the arrival of the first group of refugees.McCallum said about 800 people are being processed each day, and that he is "guardedly optimistic" the process will continue to move at a brisk pace.New figures released during a briefing in Ottawa include:- 11,932 applications are in progress.- 1,451 permanent resident visas have been issued.- 416 Syrian refugees have arrived in Canada since Nov. 4, 2015.- 69 communities across Canada are preparing to welcome refugees."This is a pretty good clip and a good sign for us in terms of getting this job done," he said. But he cautioned there is "no guarantee" that good news will continue, especially with the looming election in Lebanon, which has been issuing exit visas.-Won't jump queue-McCallum also announced the government is increasing funding for resettlement assistance services by $3.6 million, in order to welcome refugees not only with "a smile, but also with a roof over their head."The minister confirmed that refugees will have full access to basic and supplementary benefits under the interim federal health program.NDP Leader Tom Mulcair accused the Liberals of putting forward a "totally unrealistic" plan during the election campaign to bring in 25,000 refugees by year's end. Now, he said, the government is holding back the full information and numbers."Twenty-five thousand — right after the campaign they admitted we'll never be able to do that. We told them it was unrealistic, but Canadians now want a government that's going to come clean," he said.Yesterday, officials offered the media tours of the special airport terminals in Toronto and Montreal set up specifically to receive incoming flights of refugees. The first flight is expected to land Thursday evening in Toronto with approximately 160 on board. Montreal will receive its first government-organized flight by the weekend.Canadian officials are on the ground in Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey screening refugees and overseeing the necessary health and security checks before departure. - METRO MORNING | Stories of heartbreak, resilience-Despite the new Liberal government's original ambition to move 25,000 refugees by the end of 2015, the government is now saying only 10,000 will arrive this month, with the rest coming in the first few months of the new year.Even the lower target is proving a challenge for officials and settlement groups working both abroad and domestically to ensure a safe and successful transition from conflict to Canadian life.

FBI: California shooters radicalized at least 2 years ago-Associated Press-DEC 9,15-YAHOO NEWS

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The two San Bernardino shooters were radicalized at least two years ago and had discussed jihad and martyrdom as early as 2013, one year before they married, FBI Director James Comey said Wednesday.Comey told the Senate Judiciary Committee that investigators believe that Syed Rizwan Farook and his wife, Tashfeen Malik, were radicalized even before they began their online relationship and that Malik held extremist views before she arrived in the U.S. last year.He told the panel that the two "as early as the end of 2013 were talking to each other about jihad and martyrdom before they became engaged and married and were living in the U.S."The disclosure means that Malik's radicalization had already begun when she applied for a visa to come to the U.S. to get married, and that the government's vetting process apparently failed to detect it. Comey said he didn't know enough to say whether weaknesses in the visa process enabled her to enter the U.S.Malik came to the United States in July 2014 from Pakistan after being approved for a K-1, or fiancé visa. Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson has said the Obama administration is now reviewing the program. He did not say what changes were being considered.Malik married Farook the following month. Farook was born in Chicago in 1987 and raised in southern California. FBI officials had previously said that the couple had been radicalized for "quite some time," but the disclosure Wednesday was the most specific yet about the timeline of their relationship and progression toward extremism.Comey said the couple was clearly inspired by a foreign terror organization, but that investigators did not yet know whether their online courtship was arranged by such a group or developed naturally on its own."It would be a very, very important thing to know," he said. The FBI director described the couple as an example of homegrown violent extremists who appear to have radicalized "in place," drawing a distinction between the San Bernardino attack and the one last month in Paris that officials suspect involved planning and training in Syria.Comey declined to say what role, if any, encrypted communications played in last week's massacre.Though he said the Obama administration was not seeking to address concerns over data encryption on smartphones, he said he remained concerns that criminals, terrorists and spies were using such technology to evade detection."Increasingly, we are unable to see what they say, which gives them a tremendous advantage," he said.He said one of the gunmen in last May's shooting outside a Prophet Mohammed cartoon contest in Garland, Texas had exchanged more than 100 messages prior to the attack that investigators still had been unable to access.Alicia A. California shooters discussed martyrdom before meeting: FBI-Reuters By Julia Harte and Mark Hosenball-DEC 9,15-YAHOONEWS

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A couple who massacred 14 people at a California holiday party were discussing martyrdom online a year before they met in person and married, FBI Director James Comey said on Wednesday.Investigators were tracing the radicalization of Syed Rizwan Farook, 28, and Tashfeen Malik, 29, who married in 2014, and evidence mounted that both were interested in Islamist-inspired violence before they became acquainted."They were actually radicalized before they started ... dating each other online, and as early as the end of 2013 they were talking to each other about jihad and martyrdom before they became engaged," Comey said at a hearing of the Senate Judiciary Committee.A U.S. government source said Farook may have been plotting an attack as early as 2011. This diminishes the likelihood of early theories after the Dec. 2 shootings in California that Malik had radicalized her husband. Twenty-one people were also wounded in the attack.Classifying the massacre as a terrorist act, the Federal Bureau of Investigation believes that the couple, who were killed in a shootout with police a few hours after their attack on Farook's San Bernardino County co-workers at the party, were inspired by foreign terrorist organizations. Comey said it would be "very, very important to know" if their marriage had been arranged by a militant group as a way to carry out attacks in the United States, although he said there was no evidence yet indicating that. The investigation of Farook, who was born in Illinois to Pakistani immigrants, and Malik, who was born in Pakistan and lived most of her life in Saudi Arabia, is looking into his relationship with his boyhood friend Enrique Marquez.According to media reports, Marquez had converted to Islam a few years ago and was connected to Farook's family by marriage.A government source said Farook may have planned an attack in 2011 or 2012 but did not follow through. The source gave no details, but CNN cited two U.S. officials as saying Farook and an unnamed second person selected a target but abandoned their plan after terror-related arrests in the area. Fox News reported Marquez told investigators about the aborted plot. The San Bernardino Sun newspaper quoted investigation sources as saying multiple photographs of Carter High School in Rialto, California were found on Farook's phone.-WEAPONS PURCHASE-The FBI said that in 2011 or 2012 Marquez legally bought the AR-15 assault-style rifles that Farook and Malik used in their attack on the San Bernardino party. A government source familiar with the investigation said authorities were trying to determine if Farook had asked Marquez to buy the weapons so as not to draw attention to himself.Marquez, who worked at a Walmart Supercenter in Corona, California, has not been arrested in the case, but he was questioned by the FBI on Tuesday and his family home was raided over the weekend. Marquez checked himself into a Los Angeles-area psychiatric facility soon after the shooting.State documents showed that last year Marquez married Mariya Chernykh, whose sister is married to Farook's brother, Syed Raheel Farook, a U.S. Navy veteran. It could not be immediately determined if Marquez lived with his wife. The New York Times reported that he split his time between his family's home and that of a girlfriend. Gasser Shehati, a friend of Farook's from a San Bernardino mosque, said Farook told him several years ago that Marquez had converted to Islam. On his marriage certificate, Marquez and his wife listed their religious society/denomination as Islamic Society of Corona/Norco.In a Facebook posting before the attack, Malik pledged loyalty to Islamic State, the militant group that has taken over parts of Iraq and Syria. Coupled with Islamic State attacks in Paris in November that killed 130 people, the San Bernardino assault has elevated concerns about security and immigration in the United States.-VISA QUESTION-Republican members of the Senate Judiciary Committee grilled Comey about the attack and criticized the Obama administration's response to the militant group Islamic State. If the San Bernardino shooters are proven to have been inspired by Islamic militants, theirs would be the largest such attack on U.S. soil since Sept. 11, 2001.The committee's chairman, Republican Senator Charles Grassley, said the San Bernardino shootings had shown Obama to be "spectacularly wrong" about the security of the U.S. visa screening process since Malik arrived in the United States on a K-1 fiancée visa on which he said she listed a false address."Our government apparently didn't catch the false address in Pakistan that she listed on her application," Grassley said.Comey said in response to a question that he has no reason to believe Islamic State already has cells in the United States."They are trying to motivate people already in the United States to become killers on their behalf and they would very much like to - as they aspire to be the leader in the global jihad - send people here to conduct attacks," Comey said.He said the latter scenario "has not been seen yet."(Additional reporting by Julia Edwards in Washington; Writing by Bill Trott; Editing by Toni Reinhold and Cynthia Osterman)

Muslim groups raise $134K for San Bernardino shooting victims, families-Muslims United for San Bernardino was launched one day after the terrorist attack that left 14 dead in California-By Michael Walsh-DEC 9,15-YAHOONEWS

Muslim-American groups have come together to raise nearly $135,000 for the families of the 14 killed and 21 wounded in the terrorist attack in San Bernardino, Calif.Faisal Qazi, a neurologist and president of the MiNDS Network, launched the local fundraising campaign, Muslims United for San Bernardino, one day after the tragedy at the Inland Regional Center, a facility for people with developmental disabilities. It was intended as a local campaign for Muslim-Americans in Southern California until Tarek El-Messidi, founder of the nonprofit CelebrateMercy, reached out to Qazi and suggested broadening the scope to a national level.“We care for this country. We love this country. While no amount of money will bring back victims’ loved ones for their families, we hope this will alleviate some of the financial burden for these families,” El-Messidi said in an interview with Yahoo News.El-Messidi, who has experience with countrywide campaigns, secured promotions and endorsements from major Muslim organizations throughout the United States, including Zaytuna College and Mental Health 4 Muslims.Within 48 hours, the campaign on LaunchGood, a crowdfunding platform focused on Muslims throughout the world, reached its initial goal of $50,000, so the organizers raised the bar to $140,000.In the wake of the tragedy, El-Messidi said, many Muslims were frustrated and scared that some people were lumping them together with extremists.Perhaps the most public indication of this was Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s call to ban all Muslims from entering the United States until “our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on.” The proposal has garnered both domestic and international ridicule, and several prominent scholars challenged it on constitutional grounds.El-Messidi lamented what he considers the unfair and inaccurate representation of most Muslim-Americans as violent and treasonous in parts of the news media.“The truth is far from that. Muslims make about 1 percent of America,” El-Messidi said. “We are actively contributing to America and helping to build society. This campaign is one example of how American Muslims are trying to build and not destroy.”Imam Omar Suleiman was the first major national Islamic figure to endorse the campaign. He said he wanted to bring whatever comfort and relief he could to the families.“Obviously, losing someone is not something that could be compensated in any way. At least we could demonstrate that we were with them as fellow citizens and fellow human beings. This was a phenomenal outpouring of love,” Suleiman told Yahoo News. “Our hearts and minds are with the families of these victims.”Echoing El- Messidi’s sentiments, Suleiman said that these tragedies force the Muslim community in this country to grieve as Americans and worry as Muslims.Muslims have been among the victims, he continued, of major terrorist attacks, including Sept. 11 and the attacks on Paris last month. Anies Kondoker, who survived being shot three times in San Bernardino last week, attended the same mosque as the terrorists.“We suffer as a community, like everyone else,” Suleiman said. “It’s a terrifying climate now where even a disabilities center is not even safe anymore. We are praying for an end to gun violence and terrorism of all sorts.”

Father of Paris attacker would 'have killed' son if he knew of plot-AFP-DEC 9,15-YAHOONEWS

Bischheim (France) (AFP) - The father of the third gunman in the attack on the Bataclan concert hall in Paris said Wednesday he would "have killed" his son had he known what he was planning.Said Mohamed-Aggad told AFP he only found out on Wednesday, with the rest of the nation, that his 23-year-old son Foued was among the three gunmen who sprayed concert-goers with assault rifles, killing 90 people in the worst attack of the November 13 carnage."Of course I'm surprised," he told reporters outside his home in Bischheim, a suburb of the northeastern city Strasbourg.Had he known his son was planning to take part in the jihadist rampage that killed 130 people in total, "I would have killed him myself beforehand," he said.Mohamed- Aggad said he was aware his son had travelled to Syria in 2013 with a group of youths from the Strasbourg area, "but not that he had returned"."The last time I saw him was two years ago when he left. I have no words, I only found out this morning. I have to pull myself together."Foued Mohamed-Aggad was the last of the three Bataclan assailants to be identified, all of them French. The two others -- Omar Ismail Mostefai, 29, and 28-year-old former Paris bus driver Samy Amimour -- had also been in Syria. Two of the gunmen blew themselves up with suicide belts packed with explosives after the Bataclan attack. The third was shot by police who stormed the venue with hundreds of people still inside.

Factbox: New climate text shows many hurdles to Paris deal-Reuters – DEC 9,15-YAHOONEWS

PARIS (Reuters) - Hosts France proposed a slimmer draft text at global climate talks on Wednesday that leaves major issues unresolved, including finance for developing nations. The new text is 29 pages, against 43 on Saturday.Almost 200 nations are meeting in Paris, seeking a turning point away from an increasing reliance on fossil fuels since the Industrial Revolution. The meeting is due to finish on Friday, Dec. 11, but could run longer.Following are details of the new draft:-FINANCE-Developed nations promised in 2009 to mobilize $100 billion a year by 2020 from both public and private sources to help developing nations limit their greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to more floods, heat waves and rising sea levels. The new text retains a split between poor and rich. One option favored by developing nations says "financial resources shall be scaled up from a floor of $100 billion per year" beyond 2020. Another option, which is favored by rich nations, is vaguer and says countries should "enhance the scale and effectiveness of climate finance".-LONG-TERM GOAL-The text includes options of holding temperature rises below two degrees Celsius (3.6 Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial times, "well below 2C" or "below 1.5" (2.7F), the goal supported by more than 100 developing nations. Global average surface temperatures have already risen by about 1.0C (1.8F).Options include cuts in emissions of greenhouse gases to net zero after the middle of the 21st century, or by the end. Another option is that countries would set no clear deadline.China and India, heavily dependent on coal, are among those reluctant to set clear dates for giving up fossil fuels they see as vital to lift millions from poverty.-LOSS AND DAMAGE-Developing nations want a long-term mechanism to help them cope with loss and damage from disasters such as typhoons or the impacts of a creeping rise of sea level rise. All governments set up a loss and damage mechanism in 2013, but it has so far done little. The draft agreement would extend the mechanism, a sign of progress for the demands of developing nations.-RAISING AMBITION-The United Nations says promises by 186 nations to curb greenhouse gas emissions beyond 2020, already made, are too weak to limit rising temperatures to an agreed 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial times. That means there will have to be a system to ratchet up action, but it is poorly defined. The draft suggest that countries should take stock of efforts in 2018 or 2019, and then follow up with a more formal stocktake in 2023 or 2024 to guide countries in updating their pledges, and then every five years thereafter.-CARBON MARKETS-The draft contains no explicit mention of carbon markets, nor of the possibility of carbon penalties for aviation and shipping. It does, however, include a reference to "use of internationally transferred mitigation outcomes", which carbon experts say can be read as markets.-DIFFERENTIATION-Developing nations say that rich nations, as defined in a 1992 Convention, should continue to take the lead in cutting emissions and providing finance. Developed nations argue that many of these countries, such as Singapore and South Korea, have since become wealthy and should do more.-LEGAL FORCE-All nations agreed in 2011 that the Paris deal will have some form of "legal force". The draft leaves the issue unresolved, saying in line with previous texts that it will be either a "protocol, another legal instrument or an agreed outcome with legal force".(Reporting by Alister Doyle; Editing by Tom Heneghan)

Alberta's 'dirty oilsands' reputation is fading, Suncor CEO says-CBC – DEC 9,15-YAHOONEWS

Alberta hasn't always had the best reputation on the world stage. A year ago, the European Union nearly put a formal "dirty" label on oil coming from the bitumen-rich oilsands in the northern part of the province. The characterization still exists today, with U.S. President Barack Obama repeating the "dirty" depiction in his rejection of the proposed Keystone XL pipeline. But as the head of Canada's largest energy company strolls through the United Nations climate change conference in Paris, he says the reputation is changing, slowly."I think it's slightly outdated," Suncor chief executive Steve Williams said Tuesday in an interview with CBC News. "We are earning our way back onto the stage."Suncor is part of Canada's delegation at the global conference aimed at securing an agreement between all countries to take action on climate change. So far, the oilsands have barely been mentioned in discussions inside the airplane hangers of Le Bourget, a suburb of Paris, where the negotiations are being held.Williams believes each province, state and country should have a carbon tax. Alberta has not only announced plans for a carbon levy, but also a limit on oilsands growth and an accelerated phase-out of coal-fired power plants."If you look at what is actually happening in Alberta, we're now leading the way," said Williams. While he calls the Alberta's plan big and bold, Williams confessed he is working to convince other players in the oilpatch to get on board with the new policies. "What you'll find in the more forward-thinking companies is they have already been pricing carbon in and taking a view on the future," said Williams. What's clear is that the industry is entering a new world where the companies with the strongest balance sheets and most efficient projects are the ones that will survive. With oil prices expected to remain low for the foreseeable future, no wonder Husky Energy's chief executive Tuesday described the oil and gas sector as entering "into uncharted territory."Technology top priorityWhile there is frequent talk about the need for innovation to reduce the environmental footprint of the oil and gas sector, companies haven't always used the technologies that already exist.- ANALYSIS | Brad Wall and the elusive goal of carbon capture and storage-"In a high commodity price environment, it's easier to get away with being less efficient, but where prices are now, the squeeze is on," said Yvan Champagne, president of Blue Source Canada, a company that sells carbon offsets and develops greenhouse gas reduction projects. He spoke with CBC News Tuesday in Paris.Champagne suggests one of the biggest opportunities in Alberta is to capture vented methane emissions. In many cases, it hasn't been economic to do this in the past. But with the proposed carbon tax, it may make much more sense in the future. Typically, there is a strong correlation between the greenhouse gas intensity of an operation and its costs, said Champagne, and that's why there is a real opportunity to be more competitive and reduce emissions at the same time.Tighter financial conditions focus the mind.Williams admitted that industry hasn't always implemented the latest innovations. However, he said more technology is vital and increased funding will likely flow to the Canada's Oil Sands Innovation Alliance (COSIA), an organization representing 13 companies aimed at improving the oilsands' environmental performance. There's no question that the energy sector is going through a period of disruption caused by environmental policy and low oil prices. But disruption can spur innovation, and a carbon tax combined with a tough price environment could be what's needed to lower emissions and costs at the same time.If that happens, Williams will be right and the dirty oil label might be left behind.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Solar power companies have an image problem - and they are beginning to do something about it.Despite a sharp drop in the price of solar panels and innovative financing plans that have brought the technology to many middle income households over the past decade, it is still seen as a luxury only rich, mostly white, consumers can afford. That perception both hampers solar expansion in less affluent communities and drives political opposition to initiatives promoting greater use of solar power as a renewable alternative to gas, oil and coal.Though it has grown dramatically in recent years, solar power still makes up less than 1 percent of U.S. energy supplies and relies heavily on government incentives to compete with traditional energy sources. Those incentives help companies such as SolarCity, Sunrun and others market solar power contracts that offer customers 20 percent savings on their energy bills. However, the schemes come with certain credit requirements and are ill-suited for apartment dwellers, homes with low monthly bills or low-income households that qualify for reduced power rates.“No one needs solar on their home if their bill is not more than $150 a month," said Steven Bradford, a California Democrat who until last year was a state assembly member for an ethnically diverse district in the Los Angeles area and is now running for the state Senate. "Low income folks in a 900 square foot (83.6 square meter) home or apartment are not the perfect candidates for it.”Data from U.S. online solar marketplace EnergySage showed that just 4 percent of more than 10,000 people actively shopping for solar systems on its site identified themselves as black, with 11 percent split between Hispanic and Asian shoppers. Those who identified themselves as white made up 73 percent of the shoppers and the rest did not declare their race. EnergySage said nearly 80 percent of shoppers reported household incomes of $50,000 or more and nearly a third declared incomes of $125,000 or more.Since minorities make up a disproportionate number of low-income households, some advocacy groups have opposed certain solar power initiatives arguing that they deepen social and racial inequality.Solar companies are now trying to tackle both the perceptions and the economics by pushing to diversify their workforce, forging alliances with minority groups, and making solar power more suitable for multi-family housing."We have to get the word out that solar is not just a product for the rich," Lyndon Rive, chief executive of top U.S. solar installer SolarCity told Reuters. The stakes are particularly high in California, by far the top U.S. solar market where solar power is expected to make up more than 10 percent of the state's power generation in 2015, according to IHS.Communities with median household incomes below $40,000 account for just 5 percent of installations in the state even though a third of California households fall into that category. That share has not changed over the past seven years even as solar installations in communities in the $55,000-$70,000 income bracket have risen to more than half of the total market, according to energy data analysis firm Kevala Analytics. (Graphic:http://reut.rs/1m7vDHh)-Now companies are trying to tap the lower-income segment. They have gradually lowered the credit score requirement for the financing of solar panels and are rolling out projects that allow solar installations to be shared by groups of households or used in subsidized housing complexes.-NEW MARKET-This year California passed a law, which the solar industry and environmental groups lobbied hard for, that will allow the state to use up to $1 billion of the money from its greenhouse gas emissions trading program to install solar power on affordable housing projects over the next decade."That's a real market," said Rive, adding that SolarCity could eventually create an investment fund dedicated to affordable housing. What solar companies are up against is fears that poor Americans are effectively paying for the lucrative incentives for the rich, something that traditional utilities have sought to exploit. For example, in Florida, several black and Hispanic groups have joined utilities in opposing a proposed ballot initiative that would allow companies to lease solar systems to homeowners. Both the pro-solar ballot initiative and one proposed by its opponents are still gathering signatures. In Arizona, the solar industry's growth has slowed since 2013, when regulators approved a fee for solar customers after the state utility argued that lower-income and minority communities were left burdened with grid maintenance costs.Solar power advocates say its share is too small to have any impact on costs faced by conventional energy consumers, but the setback made them work harder to win over minority communities. Chet McGensy, an attorney who leads SolarCity's efforts to engage with minority communities, said California solar supporters held rallies this fall, for example, with black political advocacy group the Hip Hop Caucus."It's bringing in a different demographic," McGensy said. The rallies were part of the industry's defense of "net metering" that allows solar panel owners to sell their excess power back to the utility. Some utilities and minority groups criticize it as a further transfer of costs from solar customers to poorer households.SolarCity met advocacy groups such as Hispanics in Energy and the NAACP this fall, but have yet to fully dispel their concerns about solar energy' pro-wealthy bias."They are now trying to clean up a mess that has been made because they haven't built those relationships," Jacqui Patterson, director of environment and climate justice for the NAACP, said. "But it's changing and that is definitely hopeful." Patterson said she sought commitments on minority hiring and entrepreneurship as one way of ensuring that they can benefit from solar sector's growth. In 2012, The Solar Foundation, which tracks jobs in the industry, found that 54 percent of positions were filled by word of mouth or referral."That means we're hiring our friends, and we're not allowing it to be a competitive, more broadly accessible process," Andrea Luecke, the group's executive director, said in an interview. That is changing, the industry says. The percentage of blacks and Latinos in the solar workforce increased between 2013 and 2014, according to The Solar Foundation, even though blacks remain underrepresented compared with the overall workforce. SolarCity and others are frequenting minority-focused job fairs, recruiting more military veterans and engaging in job training in minority communities.Ian Fernando, a talent programs manager at Sunrun, one of the biggest rooftop solar companies, spends much of his time speaking to minority-focused workforce training programs."The approach we take is really grassroots," he said.(Additional reporting by Richard Valdmanis in Paris; Editing by Tomasz Janowski)

Despite Russia rhetoric, Tories rejected permanent bases for troops in Europe-By Murray Brewster, The Canadian Press | The Canadian Press – DEC 9,15-YAHOONEWS

OTTAWA - Despite its relentless rhetoric against Russia, the former Conservative government quietly set clear, consistent limits on its support for NATO as the alliance sought to reassure jittery eastern European countries after the annexation of Crimea, newly released documents reveal.A May 27, 2014 directive authorizing the military to conduct a wide range of operations in Europe explicitly ruled out a return to Cold War-style permanent bases and instead committed the country to establishing a presence through the rotation of troops, jets and warships on a six month basis. Now in Opposition, the Conservatives have been quick to criticize the Liberals for setting limits and re-orienting the country's combat mission against the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant, defence experts say.The restraints for Operation Reassurance in eastern Europe were laid out in the 26-page directive, obtained by The Canadian Press under access to information legislation. They paint in the clearest terms yet how disconnected the Harper government's "soaring rhetoric" was from the reality of what it was prepared to do in concert with allies, the analysts say.During his last year in office, Stephen Harper faced criticism for talking tough on the threats posed by Vladimir Putin's regime in Ukraine as well as the Islamic State, while at the same time cutting defence spending. There are several lessons for Justin Trudeau's new government, says Dave Perry, of the Global Affairs Institute. The constant beating of the drum by the Conservative government created out-sized expectations among allies and friends, such as Ukraine — relationships that will need mending and tending in the coming year, he said."If the new government can more closely align its descriptions of what it thinks should happen in the world with the actual resources, it will be doing our international policy a good service," said Perry. The army was ordered to create a "persistent presence in Europe" by making available a single company of soldiers — roughly 150 people — who would rotate in and out the region for exercises, said the directive signed by now-retired general Tom Lawson, the former chief of defence staff. It also allotted six CF-18 fighter-bombers on a regular basis and unspecified number of "naval platforms."Canada has kept a frigate on duty with NATO's standing task force and fighters have participated in an air-policing mission over the Baltic States. At the height of the Afghan war, Canada was deploying up to 3,000 troops, aircrew and headquarters personnel for six-to-nine-month rotations and Perry says the Conservatives could have easily committed a bigger force to NATO, had they chosen to do so."I don't think there is anyone who would expect Canada to single-handedly solve all of the world's problems, but the mismatch between what we were saying and the actual contributions wasn't helpful," said Perry. "Ultimately, we were not as effective an actor on the international stage as we could have been."Trudeau's government faced criticism in the House of Commons this week for planning to withdraw CF-18 warplanes from the fight against the Islamic State at the same time other allies are ramping up their contributions to the air campaign against extremists.George Petrolekas, of the Conference of Defence Associations Institute, says it's pretty hard — at this point — to criticize the Liberals when they haven't presented a plan as to what the new mission will look like.

China military paying 'close attention' to U.S. plane deployment-Reuters – DEC 9,15-YAHOO NEWS

BEIJING (Reuters) - China's military is paying "close attention" to an agreement between the United States and Singapore to deploy the U.S. P8 Poseidon spy plane to the city state and hopes the move does not harm regional stability, the Defence Ministry said."We are paying close attention to how the relevant situation develops, and hope bilateral defense cooperation between the relevant countries is beneficial to regional peace and stability and not the opposite," the ministry said in a brief statement late on Tuesday. The foreign ministry of China, which is at odds with Washington over the South China Sea, said on Tuesday the move was aimed at militarizing the region. In a joint statement after a meeting in Washington on Monday, U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter and Singapore Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen welcomed the deployment of the aircraft in Singapore from Dec. 7 to 14.A U.S. defense official said further deployments in Singapore could be expected.Ng told a seminar in Washington on Wednesday that Singapore had agreed the P8 deployment would be "rotational" and said it added further "substance" to Washington's assurances that it would continue to act as a stabilizing force in Asia.China claims almost all of the energy-rich waters of the South China Sea, through which more than $5 trillion of maritime trade passes each year. The Philippines, Brunei, Vietnam, Malaysia and Taiwan have overlapping claims. The United States already operates P8s from Japan and the Philippines, and has conducted surveillance flights from Singapore's neighbor, Malaysia. Washington has criticized China's building of artificial islands in the South China Sea's disputed Spratly archipelago, and has conducted sea and air patrols near them.Last month, U.S. B-52 bombers flew near some of China's artificial islands and at the end of October a U.S. guided-missile destroyer sailed within 12 nautical miles of one of them.In May, the Chinese navy issued eight warnings to the crew of a U.S. P8 that flew near the islands, according to CNN, which had reporters on the aircraft.(Reporting by Ben Blanchard, additional reporting by David Brunnstrom in Washington; editing by Stephen Coates and Grant McCool)

Canadian politicians condemn Donald Trump for plan to stop Muslims from entering U.S.CBC – DEC 9,15-YAHOONEWS

Canadian politicians have given a thumbs down to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump for his pitch to ban Muslims from travelling to the U.S.Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said someone in his position should not comment on the domestic politics of another country, especially when an election race is underway. But he said Canadians know exactly where he stands on these issues."I talked about it repeatedly in the election campaign, and Canadians soundly rejected the politics of fear and division," he said.Trump, a billionaire businessman who has emerged as the front-runner in the Republican presidential nomination race, called for a "total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country's representatives can figure out what is going on."The incendiary remark sparked outrage around the world, especially among Muslims, and in Toronto and Vancouver there were calls to remove Trump's name from office towers.Trump's remarks 'ridiculous'-Interim Conservative Leader Rona Ambrose dismissed the comments as "ridiculous.""It's up to the people of the United States to choose who their leader is or up to people in his party, but I'm sure by and large even people in his party think his comments are ridiculous," she said.Trump has frequently been condemned for his comments about women and religious and ethnic minorities throughout his campaign, and NDP Leader Tom Mulcair suggested it might be time to turn the table."I say we should limit access to Canada for people who are spouting hatred, and we should make sure Donald Trump stays out of Canada," he said.Maryam Monsef, the minister of democratic institutions, said Trump's comments make her even more proud and grateful to live in a country like Canada."As a Muslim, as a woman, as a Canadian, as a young person, every time someone makes a comment that is exclusionary and prejudiced, it is disappointing and somewhat unnerving," she said.

Under truce deal, Syrian rebels start pullout from last opposition-held district in Homs city-By Albert Aji, The Associated Press | The Canadian Press – DEC 9,15-YAHOONEWS

HOMS, Syria - Hundreds of Syrian civilians and rebels began pulling out of the last opposition-held neighbourhood of the city of Homs on Wednesday as part of a local deal with government forces that would return the entire central city to government control.A few thousand insurgents have been holed up in Waer district, which government forces had blockaded for nearly three years, only sporadically allowing in food. The governor of Homs, Talal Barazzi, told The Associated Press on the outskirts of Waer that 272 gunmen and 447 civilians left the district on Wednesday in an evacuation process that was presided over by the United Nations.Once the evacuation is completed, the city of Homs, once dubbed as "the capital of the revolution," will fully return to government control. The deal is similar to one struck in May 2014 in Homs' Old City. There, the government assumed control of the quarter after about 2,000 rebels were granted safe passage to opposition areas north of Homs. The area was destroyed and thousands of civilians were killed or forced to flee, and rebels surrendered only after they were starved and outgunned.Still, officials hope that such local deals can be replicated across Syria to create pockets of peace and a climate conducive to peace talks. The international community is making its most serious push yet for a cease-fire and negotiations to end the Syrian conflict that began in 2011.In Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, Syrian opposition groups and rebel factions opened a meeting on Wednesday with the aim of forming a unified front ahead of the proposed peace talks with representatives of Assad's government.A peace plan agreed to last month by 20 nations meeting in Vienna set a Jan. 1 deadline for the start of negotiations between Assad's government and opposition groups.U.N. and Red Crescent officials were on hand on the outskirts of Waer Wednesday to oversee implementation of the deal, which saw the gunmen and some of their families transported to areas further north in Hama and Idlib province. The insurgents included members of the al-Qaida branch in Syria, the Nusra Front, and an array of extremist and more moderate rebels fighting to topple President Bashar Assad. Also, several wounded civilians were loaded into ambulances waiting just outside the district. Journalists were not allowed to approach the civilians and gunmen as they left Waer. An AP crew saw gunmen getting into buses, their faces covered with scarves to avoid identification. The bus windows were covered with curtains, but several of the gunmen, some of them with light beards, could be seen peeking from behind them. Several gave the thumbs-up sign.In one of the blue civilian buses, a man grinned and waved from his window seat, while a little girl in the seat behind waved. At least one person with a missing leg was seen walking on crutches and assisted by paramedics into a waiting bus.The convoy of at least 10 white buses carrying civilians and seven green buses carrying gunmen then left Waer. A U.N. vehicle and Syrian army pickup truck mounted with a machinegun drove in between each bus carrying civilians, while U.N. and Red Crescent vehicles bracketed each bus carrying rebel fighters."With this agreement, Homs will now be a safe place free of weapons and gunmen," said Barazzi, the Homs governor. The truce deal also stipulates that the government in Damascus release an unspecified number of prisoners from Syrian jails, in addition to the release of some civilians and militants who were kidnapped by the gunmen in Waer.Meanwhile, Turkey's prime minister Ahmet Davutoglu accused Russia of attempting "ethnic cleansing" through its air campaign in northern Syria. He told a group of foreign reporters in Istanbul on Wednesday that Russia's operations have targeted Turkmen and Sunni communities around the Latakia region.Davutoglu also renewed a call for the creation of a safe zone in Syria "so that new waves (of refugees) will not come." Turkish-Russian tensions have escalated since Turkey downed a Russian warplane near the Syrian border last month. Turkey says the fighter jet violated its airspace ignoring repeated warnings. Russia denies the claim.___Associated Press writers Aya Batrawy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and Zeina Karam in Beirut contributed to this report.

British government official says no plans to ban Trump over Muslim remarks-By Jill Lawless, The Associated Press | The Canadian Press – DEC 9,15-YAHOONEWS

LONDON - Britain has no plans to ban Donald Trump over his comments about Muslims despite a growing number of calls for his exclusion, the country's Treasury chief said Wednesday.British politicians have condemned Trump's proposal for all Muslims to be barred from entering the U.S. in the wake of violence by Islamic extremists, and official bodies in Britain distanced themselves from the Republican presidential nomination hopeful.A university revoked his honorary degree Wednesday, and the Scottish government dumped Trump as an unpaid business ambassador. Some Britons say the remarks amount to hate speech and have called for Trump to be barred from the U.K., where he owns a Scottish golf course. An online petition has surpassed the 100,000-signature threshold that means a committee of lawmakers must consider it for debate in Parliament.Finance minister George Osborne told lawmakers that Trump's "nonsense" views "fly in the face of the founding principles of the United States." But he said it would be wrong to "ban presidential candidates."Answering questions in the House of Commons, Osborne said "the best way to confront the views of someone like Donald Trump is to engage in a robust democratic argument with him about why he is profoundly wrong."The government has the power to bar people considered a threat to public safety or national security, or those with criminal convictions. In the past the U.K. has denied entry to figures as diverse as boxer Mike Tyson, rapper Tyler the Creator, radical Muslim preachers and the late Christian fundamentalist Fred Phelps. Sr.Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, in northeast Scotland, said Wednesday it was withdrawing an honorary doctorate in business administration it awarded Trump in 2010. It said his recent statements "are wholly incompatible with the ethos and values of the university."The Scottish government also revoked Trump's status as a business ambassador with the GlobalScot network, a group of business leaders, entrepreneurs and executives with a connection to Scotland. The entrepreneur-turned-politician's mother was born in Scotland, and Trump has spoken of his affection for the country.

Israel applies lethal response to wave of Palestinian attacks-Reuters By Luke Baker-DEC 9,15-YAHOONEWS

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - By now, the news alerts are all too familiar: "Stabbing near Old City: Israeli wounded, attacker shot dead", read a recent bulletin. Another came by text message on Wednesday: "Stabbing attack: 2 wounded, one light, terrorist shot dead."Over the past 2-1/2 months, since a wave of violence by Palestinians targeting Israelis began on Oct. 1, 19 Israelis and a U.S. citizen have been killed in shootings, stabbings and car-rammings across Israel, Jerusalem and the West Bank.It is the worst surge in violence many Israelis have experienced since the second Palestinian uprising, or intifada, ended a decade ago. This time, as security makes access to firearms difficult, attackers rely on knives and other blades. More than 200 Israelis have been wounded, many of them seriously, according to the Israeli Security Agency.Over the same period, 106 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli soldiers, police or civilians either in the aftermath of attacks, on suspicion that they were about to carry out an attack or in related violence, according to a Reuters count and figures from the Palestinian Monitoring Group. The disparity in the number killed on each side - and the fact more than 13,500 Palestinians have been injured, including many in demonstrations, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry - has led to accusations by rights groups and others that Israel is using excessive force to quell the unrest. The United States, the European Union and the United Nations have all expressed concern, saying that while they recognize Israel's right to self-defense, restraint is necessary to ensure the violence does not escalate further. On Oct. 21, shortly after Jerusalem's mayor had urged Israelis with gun licenses to carry their weapons, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry warned about vigilantism."We urge everybody to exercise restraint and restrain from any kind of self-help in terms of the violence," he said.Kerry was vilified in Israel for his remarks, with commentators suggesting he was being soft on terrorism. But since then Sweden has gone further, with Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom referring to "extrajudicial executions".While her office said her comments to the Swedish parliament last week were misunderstood and "blown out of reasonable proportion", Wallstrom cited the discrepancy she saw between the number of Israelis and Palestinians killed."This is what I say in other situations where the response is such that it results in extrajudicial executions or is disproportionate in that the number of people killed on that side exceeds the original number of deaths many times over," she said, according to a transcript released to Reuters.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu immediately called his Swedish counterpart to complain, accusing Wallstrom of applying a double standard since she had not said the same thing about the response to attacks in Paris or San Bernadino."This is the second time she refers to Israel and says things that are unacceptable to us and are not true," he said.-HIGH DEATH TOLL-In Israel, a country that has fought repeated wars and uprisings over its 67-year history, where most do military service and it is common to see people carrying weapons, any suggestion of excessive use of force is hotly rejected.Comparisons with London, where a man stabbed three people at a station last week and was subdued by police using a Taser gun, are dismissed out of hand, with defenders of Israel's response pointing out that it has faced months of daily stabbings and the political and security context is acutely different.Comparisons with other places gripped by unrest are difficult, but the numbers show a high percentage of people who carry out attacks are killed rather than detained.Data compiled by Israeli researcher Nehemia Gershuni-Aylho, using information from news reports, emergency responders, the police and others, shows that 74 of 123 Palestinian attackers have been shot dead since Oct. 1 - exactly 60 percent. The Israeli Foreign Ministry, using different sources and methodology, compiled data from the police, army and security services and broke the attacks down into two categories: short-range (stabbings, shootings and car-rammings) and longer-range (stone-throwing, fire bombings). It told Reuters that out of 127 close-range attacks, 61 assailants had been killed - 48 percent of the total. For longer-range violence, one in three assailants were killed."Claims of extrajudicial killings are totally wrong and mistaken and the figures demonstrate it," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon, adding that Palestinian assailants are often treated in Israeli hospitals and brought to justice. From the Palestinian perspective, there is no question that Israel, which has occupied the West Bank and East Jerusalem since 1967 and limits Palestinians' movement throughout areas they want for a state, is carrying out extrajudicial killings."The majority of Palestinians are being shot and killed on the spot, whether they represent a threat or not," said Palestinian legislator Hanan Ashrawi, adding that she believed the number of assailants killed was well above 60 percent."These killings are in most cases carried out by fully armed military or police," she told Reuters. "They are carrying out on-the-spot executions. They are extrajudicial and a crime."(Writing by Luke Baker; editing by Giles Elgood)

Furor in Israel as Trump to be hosted by Netanyahu after remarks on Muslims-By Ori Lewis and Dan Williams | Reuters – DEC 9,15-YAHOONEWS

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli politicians of all persuasions called on Wednesday for a planned visit by U.S. Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump to be blocked over his call for a ban on Muslims entering the United States, which has raised an international outcry.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement later saying he rejected the remarks but added that the visit, set two weeks ago, would go ahead as planned and did not indicate support for Trump.A government official said Netanyahu and Trump would meet on Dec. 28."The prime minister rejects the recent comments by Donald Trump with regard to Muslims. Israel respects all religions and diligently guards the rights of all its citizens," a statement from Netanyahu's office said.It added that the Israeli leader had determined a uniform policy towards meeting all U.S. presidential candidates from both parties who visit Israel."This policy does not reflect support for the candidates or for their platforms, rather, it expresses the importance that the prime minister ascribes to the strong alliance between Israel and the United States," the statement added. At least 37 mainly Israeli opposition legislators who make up almost a third of the 120-seat Knesset signed a letter to Netanyahu calling on him to cancel the meeting unless Trump withdraws his comments.Michal Rosin of the left-wing Meretz party, who initiated the letter, said that none of Netanyahu's Likud party had agreed to sign although some had disagreed strongly with Trump's words.Foreign notables generally get the red-carpet treatment in Israel. For those running for high office, this can mean more votes at home. With Israel and the United States being close allies, and Netanyahu widely seen as supportive of the Republicans against Democratic U.S. President Barack Obama, Trump may hope his visit will bolster his foreign policy credentials ahead of the U.S. election in November 2016.Playing to U.S. fears about radical Islam after the California gun rampage, Trump has shrugged off outrage at home and abroad over his remarks, made after last week's mass shooting in California by two Muslims who police said had been radicalised.Trump said on Twitter that he was "very much looking forward" to visiting Israel by year's end.In the statement, Netanyahu repeated the need to fight militant Islam, saying that while guarding the rights of all its citizens "Israel is combating militant Islam, which attacks Muslims, Christians and Jews and threatens the entire world."Left- and right-wing Israeli politicians alike, as well as Israeli Arab lawmakers, condemned Trump's remarks and said he should be barred from visiting. Ahmad Tibi, a member of parliament from Israel's 20 percent Arab minority, said he had asked for the "neo-Nazi" not to be admitted to the Knesset. That call was echoed by Omer Bar-Lev of the main centre-left opposition party, the Zionist Union. "It is inappropriate for any Israeli official to meet (Trump) when he comes to visit," Bar-Lev said.-STRONG CRITICISM FROM NETANYAHU'S PARTY-The censure was joined by Likud officials. Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz, a senior Likud lawmaker and Netanyahu confidant, described Trump's rhetoric on Muslims as harmful from an Israeli and U.S. standpoint."I recommend fighting terrorist and extremist Islam, but I would not declare a boycott of, ostracism against or war on Muslims in general," Steinitz told Israel's Army Radio."We in the state of Israel have many Muslim citizens who are loyal. On the contrary, the extremists and the terrorists should be distinguished from the loyal citizens, and in the United States, too, there are loyal Muslim citizens."Marc Zell, vice-president of Republicans Overseas and a party representative in Israel, also had harsh words for Trump."He is a demagogue. And we as Jews, and also as Israelis, know what a demagogue is, historically," Zell told Army Radio in a separate interview, saying he was voicing his own opinion rather than a formal Republican position."The Republican party has a long list of candidates worthy of the presidency, and we have to change the leadership in the White House, which has caused a lot of damage, but Donald Trump is not the answer," Zell said. There was no word whether Trump would also meet with Israeli President Reuven Rivlin, who was visiting Washington and scheduled to meet Obama on Wednesday.White House spokesman Josh Earnest said Trump's comments disqualified him from being president and said other Republican candidates should disavow him "right now".The prime ministers of France and Britain, Canada's foreign minister, the United Nations and Muslims in Asian countries have also denounced Trump's comments.Over 150,000 Britons have signed an online petition to ban Trump from Britain, but finance minister George Osborne opposed this, saying it would better to engage Trump in democratic debate "about why he is profoundly wrong about the contribution of American Muslims and indeed British Muslims".(Additional reporting by William James and Kate Holton in London, Emily Stephenson and Susan Heavey in Washington; Editing by Richard Balmforth)

Syrian opposition seeks to close ranks as army gains on ground-By Angus McDowall | Reuters – DEC 9,15-YAHOONEWS

RIYADH (Reuters) - Syria's fragmented opposition and rebel groups sought common ground on Wednesday ahead of planned negotiations to end a conflict which has devastated the country and drawn forces from Cold War and Middle East rivals into ever deeper combat operations. The talks in Saudi Arabia mark the most ambitious attempt yet to unify President Bashar al-Assad's enemies around a joint political platform - seen as a crucial first step to finding a peaceful end to four years of war and battling Islamic State. The powerful Kurdish YPG is among several groups excluded from the talks and those there are deeply divided over central issues like how to manage a transition from Assad and the role Islam should play in Syria. But two delegates found solace in what they described as a lack of any major rupture so far among those present."It went well. Very positive. We discussed many things. Tomorrow we will discuss a document of general principles," said one opposition member. The groups hoped to complete the talks on Thursday, but they may continue into Friday, he said.A member of the Western-backed Syrian National Coalition said there had been broad agreement: "We discussed the main problems relating to the dialogue, the transition and all modalities related to the political process. Most of them agreed."More than 100 delegates were invited to the Riyadh meeting, including from the Islamist insurgent group Ahrar al-Sham, founded by militants with al Qaeda links, as well as opposition figures who have been based in government-controlled Damascus. While most agree on a call for Assad to go, despite signs that some Western backers have softened their demands after recognizing that military force has failed to topple the president, rifts in opposition ranks are still clear. Before the talks opened on Wednesday, Ahrar al-Sham complained that some delegates were "closer to ... the regime" than the opposition. One activist in exile declined to attend alongside those who "support an Islamic emirate" in Syria.International efforts to resolve the conflict which has killed 250,000 people and displaced 12 million have been lent added urgency by a wave of deadly attacks across the world claimed by the Iraq- and Syria-based Islamic State and by an escalating refugee flow which has caused a crisis in Europe.Major powers agreed in Vienna last month to revive diplomatic efforts to end the war, calling for peace talks to start by January 1.That prompted Saudi Arabia, which projects itself as a leader of the Middle East's Sunni Muslims, to summon the mainly Sunni opposition and rebel groups. The move angered rival Shi'ite Iran which said the initiative threatened to harm the Vienna process. The emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, whose country is also a major supporter of the Syrian rebels, said the Riyadh meeting represented a "golden opportunity (for the Syrian opposition) to unify their ranks and coordinate their steps beyond setting up a negotiating team".-ARMY ADVANCES-Intensified diplomacy has been accompanied by greater military intervention by foreign powers.Russia has carried out 10 weeks of air strikes, halting rebel gains, and Iran has also given Assad military support and said ousting Assad would be a "red line" for Tehran.Western powers have stepped up attacks on Islamic State while Saudi Arabia, which backs the rebels, says an expanded military option remains open.Last month NATO member Turkey shot down a Russian plane it said flew into its air space, highlighting the danger that Syria's multi-faceted war could spark yet wider conflict.Russia's air campaign has helped the Syrian army, backed by Hezbollah fighters and the Iranian military, to halt a rebel advance over the summer which had threatened Assad's control over the main population centers in western Syria.Russian air strikes, while containing rebel advances, have not decisively tipped the war in Assad's favor. On Wednesday, scores of people left the last area held by insurgents in the city of Homs, a center of the uprising against Assad which broke out in March 2011. About 750 people are expected to leave the Waer district under a local truce between the government and rebels.Further north, Syrian government troops backed by Iranian forces have edged closer to a major rebel-controlled highway near Aleppo. They appeared to be trying to cut the main Aleppo-Damascus highway that fighters use to transport supplies from rebel-held Idlib province to the north. For Saudi Arabia, which has been fighting since March in neighboring Yemen, Syria has been a secondary battlefield in its regional struggle for influence with Iran. But the kingdom still views the Syrian civil war as central to that rivalry.Ahrar al-Sham said the Riyadh meeting, which opened at a luxury hotel amid high security, must stand by demands including "the complete cleansing of the Russian-Iranian occupation of Syrian land, and the sectarian militias which support it".-" OVERTHROW OF ASSAD"-It called for the "overthrow of the Assad regime with all its pillars and symbols" and putting its members on trial.Syrian security and military institutions must also be dissolved it said, putting it at odds with world powers which agreed in Vienna last month that state institutions be kept intact in any transition of power.Other rebel factions at the Saudi talks include the powerful Islamist force Islam Army, and a dozen groups which describe themselves as elements of the Free Syrian Army (FSA).The head of one FSA armed group said the first day of talks was focused on discussing opposition demands and drafting a concluding statement. "The principles are the unity of Syrian land, the civilian nature of the state, and the unity of the Syrian people," he said. Ahrar al-Sham said Syria's "Islamic identity" should be maintained.Hadi al-Bahra, a senior member of the opposition National Coalition, said there was a positive atmosphere and "no differences among the delegates" so far. "Everyone senses the importance and sensitivity of this stage", he tweeted.Although scores of people were asked to attend, the Kurdish administration that runs swathes of north Syria was not invited.Rebels in western Syria do not trust the main Kurdish militia, the YPG, because they say it cooperates with Damascus rather than fighting it.Delegates said there was some Kurdish representation, but a Western diplomat who follows Syria said this week the meeting had not brought together as many Syrian factions as hoped."It is not all-encompassing. It is not the consolidated, overall opposition platform," the diplomat said.(Additional reporting by Tom Perry and Sylvia Westall in Beirut; Writing by Dominic Evans, editing by Sami Aboudi, Peter Millership and Philippa Fletcher)

Greece moves stranded migrants to Athens from tense border-By Alexandros Avramidis | Reuters – DEC 9,15-YAHOONEWS

IDOMENI, Greece (Reuters) - Greek police rounded up some 2,300 migrants who had been stranded for three weeks at the border with Macedonia and transported them to Athens on Wednesday, dashing their hopes of seeking asylum in northern Europe.Scuffles broke out but not on the scale of recent clashes between police and the migrants, who are mostly from Pakistan, Morocco, Algeria and Somalia. They have been encamped in squalid, freezing conditions near the town of Idomeni after Macedonia began filtering migrants by nationality on Nov. 19.Some 350 police were involved in transferring them, out of sight of media cameras, on 45 buses to an indoor sports stadium in Athens used for taekwondo during the 2004 Olympic Games and to disused premises at the former Athens airport of Hellinikon.A police official said the migrants had been given 30 days to leave the country but were not in detention. If they are caught in Greece after the deadline expires, they will be arrested and deported. However several of their home states do not have readmission agreements with Greece. Last week Pakistan refused to take back some migrants flown home from Athens by the EU border agency Frontex. At Idomeni, some 30 men initially resisted being herded onto the buses and were taken to a police station near the border but were later put on Athens-bound buses as well.At least three foreign journalists and photographers were briefly detained to prevent them watching the police operation, a Reuters photographer said.Police said in a statement the journalists had been kept away "to protect them from any possible violence, tension or threatening and aggressive behaviour".At the other end of the country, 12 migrants drowned when their boat sank off the small Greek island of Farmakonisi, close to Turkey, in the early hours of Wednesday, a coastguard official said, while 26 were rescued and 12 more were missing. The U.N. refugee agency said those rescued included a seven-year-old child whose parents were both missing. Six other children were among those who drowned.-PERILOUS CROSSING-Migrants continue to attempt the perilous crossing despite the onset of winter weather, mounting obstacles in Europe and increased efforts by Turkey to crack down on people smugglers.Hundreds of thousands of people have streamed into Europe this year, mostly through Greece. Balkan states began blocking passage last month to all but Syrians, Iraqis and Afghans, who are considered as refugees because they are fleeing war zones. Some of those stranded near Idomeni began hunger strikes and a handful sewed their lips shut to dramatise their demands. A Moroccan was electrocuted to death last week on a railway line which migrants had been blocking. Another was seriously burned when he climbed on top of a train to try to cross the border.Macedonia has erected a metal fence to keep unwanted migrants out and plans to extend it to cover more than 40 km (25 miles) of the border.More than 600,000 people have arrived in Greece this year, making the short but perilous journey by boat or rubber dinghy from Turkey to outlying islands. Thousands more have drowned.Turkey has vowed to do more to stop the flow after signing a deal with the European Union on Nov. 29 under which it will receive 3 billion euros ($3.3 billion) in aid to improve conditions for the 2.2 million Syrians Ankara has been hosting.(Additional reporting by Angeliki Koutantou; Writing by Paul Taylor and Renee Maltezou; Editing by Gareth Jones)

The Latest: UN: Nearly 770,000 people reach Greek islands this year, over 200 drown en route-By The Associated Press | The Canadian Press – DEC 9,15-YAHOONEWS

ATHENS, Greece - The Latest in the influx of people into Europe. All times local:-7:20 p.m.The U.N. refugee agency says nearly 770,000 asylum-seekers have entered Greece so far this year on their long trek toward a better life in wealthier European Union countries and said more than 200 have drowned en route.UNHCR data released Wednesday said 58 per cent of the 768,916 people arriving in Greece were men, 26 per cent children and 16 per cent women. Some 60 per cent said they were Syrians.Nearly all arrived on Greece's eastern Aegean sea islands after paying smuggling gangs in Turkey for a berth in flimsy, overcrowded boats. An average of 3,800 people a day have been making landfall this month, compared to 4,560 in November. The UNHCR listed the total number of Greek Aegean drowning deaths by Tuesday at 217, with another 126 people listed as missing. Another 12 people drowned Wednesday in the Aegean as a smuggling boat sank, and 12 other passengers on it are missing.___1:45 p.m.The German government plans to issue a new identity document to migrants arriving in the country amid efforts to improve management of the influx.Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere on Wednesday presented the paper photo ID, which authorities plan to issue to newcomers from February. Migrants will need the "arrival ID" to claim asylum-seeker benefits and conduct asylum proceedings.De Maiziere said the ID will enable authorities to keep better tabs on where asylum-seekers are and where services are needed. The government says some 965,000 people were registered as asylum-seekers in Germany between January and the end of November, though the process has been chaotic at times.___11:55 a.m.Greek riot police have removed hundreds of protesting migrants from a border crossing to Macedonia, which is denying them entry, deeming them to be economic migrants and not refugees. The protest had severed a key Greek freight train link with northern Europe for three weeks, and also periodically prevented refugees that Macedonia will accept from crossing the border. The services are now expected to restart soon.Buses carrying about 650 people, including many from Iran and Morocco, are heading south from the Idomeni border crossing, which police sealed off earlier to remove the migrants. Escorted by police motorcyclists and patrol cars, the buses were expected later Wednesday in Athens, where authorities have set up shelters and will encourage the migrants to make asylum applications in Greece.Police said 10 migrants were detained for resisting their transfer to the buses. Journalists and photographers were also briefly detained, despite obeying police instructions to keep away from certain areas.Macedonia only allows migrants from war-torn Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq through in their long trek north to wealthier European countries. Protesters from other countries say they, too, merit refugee status as they face persecution at home.___11:30 a.m.Greece's coast guards say they have recovered one more body, that of a child, from the eastern Aegean, bringing the death toll from the sinking of a boat carrying dozens of migrants from Turkey to Greece to at least 12. Another 12 people are missing, while 26 have been rescued. The wooden boat was believed to have been carrying about 50 people when it began taking on water near the Greek islet of Farmakonissi early Wednesday. Coast guard and navy vessels, a helicopter and a vessel from the European border agency Frontex were searching the area for the missing. Greece is the main entry point for refugees and economic migrants seeking to enter the European Union. More than 700,000 people have entered the country so far this year, the vast majority then heading through the Balkans to the more prosperous European north.___9:40 a.m.Police in northern Greece have closed a border crossing with Macedonia and are stopping people from getting within 5 kilometres (3 miles) of it following a standoff with hundreds of people who have been denied entry.Authorities early Wednesday closed the area and briefly detained journalists and photographers at the perimeter. More than 200 riot police have been deployed to the border area at Idomeni following the standoff that has halted freight rail services from Greece to other European countries. The migrants have been stranded at the border for three weeks after authorities in Macedonia restricted access to citizens from countries normally granted political asylum, such as Syria and Iraq.Police said the migrants will be moved to Athens in buses.___9:10 a.m.Greek authorities say at least 11 people have died and 13 are missing after a boat carrying about 50 migrants sank in the eastern Aegean Sea.The coast guard said 26 people have been rescued alive. It said the accident occurred early Wednesday when a wooden boat carrying the migrants from Turkey sank near the islet of Farmakonissi. The dead were five children, four men and two women. Their nationalities were not immediately known.Greece is the main entry point for refugees and economic migrants seeking a better life in the European Union.

24  The LORD shall make the rain of thy land powder and dust: from heaven shall it come down upon thee, until thou be destroyed.

Chicago mayor says 'I'm sorry' for police problems-By Mary Wisniewski | Reuters – DEC 9,15-YAHOONEWS

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Mayor Rahm Emanuel, under heavy criticism for his handling of a police shooting that resulted in the death of a black teen, gave an emotional apology on Wednesday hours before angry street crowds demanded his resignation. In a special address to the City Council, the mayor said "I'm sorry" and promised "complete and total reform of the system."Emanuel's speech was met with applause from the City Council, but protesters said the city's actions do not go far enough.High-profile killings of black men by mainly white police officers in U.S. cities have prompted a national debate and protests about the use of excessive force by police. With his voice occasionally breaking, the mayor of the nation's third-largest city reiterated reform steps he has already promised. These include setting up a task force to review police accountability, the appointment of a new head of the agency that investigates police misconduct and searching for a new police superintendent.Among the systemic problems with police, Emanuel aimed particular criticism at the "code of silence" that keeps police officers from reporting misconduct by fellow officers. He also has criticized the agency that investigates police misconduct for finding almost all police shootings justified."We have a trust problem," Emanuel said. His speech comes after two weeks of protests in Chicago following the release of a 2014 police squad car dashboard video showing police officer Jason Van Dyke shooting 17-year-old Laquan McDonald 16 times. Van Dyke, who is white, was charged with first-degree murder late last month.Protesters outside City Hall on Wednesday chanted "16 shots and a cover- up," and called for the resignation of Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez, who has been criticized for taking more than a year to charge Van Dyke. One activist was arrested.Said protester Rosemary Vega: "Today, we're here because we want to see Rahm resign."Another recently released video shows a man in custody being tasered by police. The U.S. Justice Department said on Monday it will launch a civil rights investigation into the city's police department, examining its use of force, including deadly force, among other issues. Also on Wednesday, a federal judge said he would rule by Jan. 14, 2016, on whether to release video in the shooting death of another black teen. The mother of Cedrick Chatman, 17, has sued the city over Chatman's death on Jan. 7, 2013. The city has opposed release of video in the case.(Additional reporting by Renita Young and Justin Madden in Chicago; Editing by Matthew Lewis)

The Latest: Chicago protesters block main downtown avenue-Associated Press By The Associated Press-DEC 9,15-YAHOONEWS

CHICAGO (AP) — The latest developments in the city of Chicago's efforts to deal with fatal police shootings and police accountability (all times local):-2:40 p.m.A predominantly peaceful group of protesters has blocked Michigan Avenue hours after Mayor Rahm Emanuel's speech to the City Council on the Chicago Police Department. There was a small bit of pushing and shoving with officers on Wednesday afternoon as the protesters tried to get to one of downtown's main streets, but eventually police let them through. The protesters then formed a circle in the middle of the road, blocking traffic.Protesters also appeared to be headed for a bridge near the Magnificent Mile, which was the site of a Black Friday protest.Wednesday's march is the latest in several weeks of protests following the release of video showing a white police officer shooting a black teenager 16 times in October 2014.The video also led to the forced resignation of the city's police chief and multiple investigations, including a pending civil rights inquiry by the U.S. Justice Department.___12:30 p.m.Two alderman support Mayor Rahm Emanuel's address to the City Council, saying that the Laquan McDonald video was key to sparking calls for police reform.Alderman Anthony Beale said Wednesday he was sorry about what happened to McDonald, a black teenager who was shot 16 times and killed by a white police officer. He added that the video was a "game-changer" in the community and helped people understand "the frustration of what we are dealing with."Beale represents a large portion of Chicago's South Side.Alderman Leslie Hairston, whose ward also encompasses parts of the South Side, including the University of Chicago, backed Emanuel's comments about people being treated differently because of their skin color. She said she was "denied access" to the council's chamber Wednesday until she produced ID "even though my picture was on the wall." She said her white colleagues walked in without having to show ID.___11:45 a.m.Lawyers in a 2013 Chicago police shooting case say the city keeps fighting the release of video despite pledges of greater transparency. The comments followed a Wednesday hearing in a civil case brought by Cedrick Chatman's family. He was a suspect in a car theft when an officer fatally shot him.A judge will rule Jan. 14 on whether to order its release. City lawyers say its release will make a fair trial difficult. The quasi-independent review authority found the officer did nothing wrong.Mayor Rahm Emanuel gave a speech Wednesday on the crisis facing police following the release of a video of Laquan McDonald's 2014 shooting. The city fought its release for months before making it public on Nov. 24.Chatman family lawyer Brian Coffman says Emanuel's new refrain is transparency. Officer testifies in his own defense at Freddie Gray trial-Associated Press By JULIET LINDERMAN and DAVID DISHNEAU-DEC 9,15-YAHOONEWS

BALTIMORE (AP) — Officer William Porter was poised and calm as he testified in his own defense Wednesday, telling jurors that he didn't call an ambulance for Freddie Gray because the man was alert, appeared uninjured and didn't complain of any pain or wounds in the back of a police van.Instead, Gray only said "yes" when Porter offered to get him medical aid, the officer testified.Porter said he did tell his colleague, the van driver, to take Gray to the hospital after he said he needed medical attention during the van's fourth of six stops. The fourth stop is crucial in Porter's case because prosecutors say Gray was already injured by the time he arrived there, and Porter's failure to call a medic to the scene contributed the Gray's death. Prosecutors also say by not buckling Gray into a seat belt during that stop, Porter was criminally negligent. Defense attorneys say Gray suffered his injury later and that the officer did what any officer would do.As Porter spoke, jurors listened intently, some leaning forward and scribbling notes as he spoke.Porter, the first of six officers to go on trial, said he only realized Gray was hurt when the van reached the police station. Porter said Gray was unresponsive "with mucus around his nose and mouth." Porter said he called Gray's name — as he'd done at previous stops, which elicited responses — but this time Gray was silent. Porter told jurors the experience was "a very traumatic thing for me."Porter faces manslaughter, assault, misconduct in office and reckless endangerment charges. If convicted on all of the charges, the maximum penalty he faces is about 25 years.Prosecutors have argued that Porter should be held partially responsible for Gray's death because he didn't call for a medic and didn't buckle the man into a seat belt, which is department policy.Defense attorneys have suggested that the van driver was responsible for Gray's safety and indicated the officer may have thought Gray was faking an injury to avoid going to jail.Porter said during the fourth stop, Gray made eye contact with him and spoke "in a regular tone of voice.""He never made a complaint of pain or an injury," Porter said. "In order to call for an ambo I need age, sex, location and complaint of injury. He wouldn't give me a complaint of injury."Gray was a 25-year-old black man who died a week after suffering a spinal injury while riding, handcuffed and shackled, in the back of the van. His death set off protests and a riot in the city, and became a rallying cry for the Black Lives Matter movement.Porter, who is also black, told jurors that when Gray was arrested, he overheard him screaming and mentioning something about needing an inhaler. When asked if Gray said he couldn't breathe at the van's fourth stop, Porter said, "absolutely not."One of the prosecution's witnesses, an internal affairs investigator, said Porter told her that Gray said during the van's journey that he couldn't breathe. But Porter explained Wednesday that the investigator was mistaken, and he only heard Gray say that when he was arrested, not when he was in the van.As for why he didn't buckle Gray into a seat belt, Porter told the jury that the wagon is "pretty tight" and said that of his 200 arrests involving the transport van, he has never belted in a prisoner.Porter added that he left the scene after lifting Gray from the floor of the wagon to the bench, and it was Caesar Goodson, the driver, who closed the wagon's doors. It would have been his responsibility, Porter said, to buckle Gray into a seatbelt and he didn't know if he did.Goodson faces the most serious charge stemming from Gray's death: second-degree "depraved-heart" murder. His trial is next month.___This story has corrected the day of the week to Wednesday, not Tuesday.
