A FALSE PROPHET COMES FROM THE VATICAN ALSO AT THIS TIME.

ISAIAH 23:15-17
15  And it shall come to pass in that day, that Tyre shall be forgotten seventy years, according to the days of one king: after the end of seventy years shall Tyre sing as an harlot.
16  Take an harp, go about the city, thou harlot that hast been forgotten; make sweet melody, sing many songs, that thou mayest be remembered.
17  And it shall come to pass after the end of seventy years, that the LORD will visit Tyre, and she shall turn to her hire, and shall commit fornication with all the kingdoms of the world upon the face of the earth.(COULD THIS BE 70 YEARS AFTER ISRAEL BECAME A NATION IN 1948)(IF SO THIS SATANIC ONE WORLD WHORE CHURCH WILL MINGLE TOGETHER BY 2018)(AND NOW ISLAM AND CHRISTIANITY AND ALL RELIGIONS ARE MINGLING AS ONE PEACE-LOVE-JOY-GET ALONG RELIGION LEAD BY THE VATICAN RIGHT NOW 4 YEARS FROM THE 70 YEAR TIME WHEN ISRAEL BECAME A NATION).AND IN CONTROL OF JERUSALEM.

REVELATION 13:11-18
11 And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth;(FALSE VATICAN POPE) and he had two horns like a lamb,(JESUS IS THE LAMB OF GOD) and he spake as a dragon.(HES SATANICALLY INSPIRED,HES A CHRISTIAN DEFECTOR FROM THE FAITH)
12 And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him,(WORLD DICTATOR) and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.(THE WORLD DICTATOR CREATES A FALSE RESURRECTION AND IS CROWNED LEADER OF THE NEW WORLD ORDER).
13 And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men,
14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.
15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.
16 And he(FALSE POPE) causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:(CHIP IMPLANT)
17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.(6-6-6) A NUMBER SYSTEM

REVELATION 17:1-18
1 And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters:
2 With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication,(VATICAN IN POLITICS) and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication.
3 So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.
4 And the woman (FALSE CHURCH) was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour,(VATICAN COLOURS)(ANOTHER REASON WE KNOW THE FALSE POPE COMES FROM THE VATICAN) and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication:
5 And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.
6 And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration.
7 And the angel said unto me, Wherefore didst thou marvel? I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns.
8 The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.
9 And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth.(THE VATICAN IS BUILT ON 7 HILLS OR MOUNTAINS)
10 And there are seven kings: five are fallen,(1-ASSYRIA,2-EGYPT,3-BABYLON,4-MEDO-PERSIA,5-GREECE) and one is,(IN POWER IN JOHNS AND JESUS DAY-6-ROME) and the other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a short space.(7TH-REVIVED ROMAN EMPIRE OR THE EUROPEAN UNION TODAY AND THE SHORT SPACE IS-THE EUROPEAN UNION WILL HAVE WORLD CONTROL FOR THE LAST 3 1/2 YEARS.BUT WILL HAVE ITS MIGHTY WORLD POWER FOR THE FULL 7 YEARS OF THE 7 YEAR TRIBULATION PERIOD.AND THE WORLD DICTATOR WILL BE THE BEAST FROM THE EU.AND THE VATICAN POPE WILL BE THE WHORE THAT RIDES THE EUROPEAN UNION TO POWER.AND THE 2 EUROPEAN UNION POWER FREAKS WILL CONTROL AND DECIEVE THE WHOLE EARTH INTO THEIR DESTRUCTION.IF YOU ARE NOT SAVED BY THE BLOOD OF JESUS.YOU WILL BE DECIEVED BY THESE TWO.THE WORLD POLITICIAN-THE EUROPEAN UNION DICTATOR.AND THE FALSE PROPHET THAT DEFECTS CHRISTIANITY-THE FALSE VATICAN POPE.
11 And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition.
12 And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast.
13 These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast.
14 These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.
15 And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.(VATICAN-CATHOLICS ALL AROUND THE WORLD OVER 1 BILLION)
16 And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast,(WORLD DICTATOR) these shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire.
17 For God hath put in their hearts to fulfil his will, and to agree, and give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled.
18 And the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth.

The pope has officially landed in the United States and is already turning heads with his surprisingly casual mode of transportation. Though a chartered Alitalia jet was what ultimately brought Pope Francis across the world to America, it was a small and simple Fiat that picked him up from the Joint Base Andrews airport in Washington, D.C. -pic-telegraph.co.uk
Pope Francis will still have a popemobile to ride in, however. He'll be using the more welcoming Jeep Wrangler version that lacks a full bulletproof glass enclosure but has open sides to make it far easier for the pope to interact with people. One thing that hasn't changed, however, is the car's license plate. So, what does the Pope's license plate SCV1 mean? SCV1 is an acronym both in Italian and in Latin. The Latin is "Status Civitatis Vaticanae" and the Italian is "Stato della Città del Vaticano"; translated from both languages, it means "Vatican City." Though the Pope's vehicle while touring the United States will have the SCV1 license plate, there are a wide variety of popemobiles with different corresponding numbers. The Ford Focus — another unusual favorite of Pope Francis — bears the license plate number SCV 00919. According to an Italian paper titled "The Plates and the Vehicles of Vatican City," there are upwards of five other popemobiles with ascending SCV license plate numbers.-pic-glassbytes.com

Read Pope Francis' Speech That He Gave at the White House-By Meghan Keneally-Sep 23, 2015, 9:44 AM ET-abcnews

Pope Francis thanked his hosts at the White House this morning and hit on some controversial topics that included confronting climate change and mending broken relationships around the world.-Pope Francis Arrives at the White House to Thousands of Fans--Here is the full text of the pope's speech:Mr. President,-I am deeply grateful for your welcome in the name of all Americans. As the son of an immigrant family, I am happy to be a guest in this country, which was largely built by such families. I look forward to these days of encounter and dialogue, in which I hope to listen to, and share, many of the hopes and dreams of the American people.During my visit I will have the honor of addressing Congress, where I hope, as a brother of this country, to offer words of encouragement to those called to guide the nation’s political future in fidelity to its founding principles. I will also travel to Philadelphia for the Eighth World Meeting of Families, to celebrate and support the institutions of marriage and the family at this, a critical moment in the history of our civilization.Mr. President, together with their fellow citizens, American Catholics are committed to building a society which is truly tolerant and inclusive, to safeguarding the rights of individuals and communities, and to rejecting every form of unjust discrimination. With countless other people of good will, they are likewise concerned that efforts to build a just and wisely ordered society respect their deepest concerns and their right to religious liberty. That freedom remains one of America’s most precious possessions. And, as my brothers, the United States Bishops, have reminded us, all are called to be vigilant, precisely as good citizens, to preserve and defend that freedom from everything that would threaten or compromise it.Mr. President, I find it encouraging that you are proposing an initiative for reducing air pollution. Accepting the urgency, it seems clear to me also that climate change is a problem which can no longer be left to a future generation. When it comes to the care of our “common home”, we are living at a critical moment of history. We still have time to make the changes needed to bring about “a sustainable and integral development, for we know that things can change” (Laudato Si’, 13). Such change demands on our part a serious and responsible recognition not only of the kind of world we may be leaving to our children, but also to the millions of people living under a system which has overlooked them. Our common home has been part of this group of the excluded which cries out to heaven and which today powerfully strikes our homes, our cities and our societies. To use a telling phrase of the Reverend Martin Luther King, we can say that we have defaulted on a promissory note and now is the time to honor it.We know by faith that “the Creator does not abandon us; he never forsakes his loving plan or repents of having created us. Humanity still has the ability to work together in building our common home” (Laudato Si’, 13). As Christians inspired by this certainty, we wish to commit ourselves to the conscious and responsible care of our common home. The efforts which were recently made to mend broken relationships and to open new doors to cooperation within our human family represent positive steps along the path of reconciliation, justice and freedom. I would like all men and women of good will in this great nation to support the efforts of the international community to protect the vulnerable in our world and to stimulate integral and inclusive models of development, so that our brothers and sisters everywhere may know the blessings of peace and prosperity which God wills for all his children.Mr. President, once again I thank you for your welcome, and I look forward to these days in your country. God bless America!

Obama’s welcoming speech to Pope Francis, and the pope’s reply-sept 23,15-9:35am- McClatchy Washington Bureau

President Barack Obama and Pope Francis stand at attention during the playing of the national anthems during a state arrival ceremony for the pope, Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2015, on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington.-WASHINGTON-President Barack Obama’s remarks came first Wednesday morning at the White House. Pope Francis’ own comments are below the president’s.Good morning! What a beautiful day the Lord has made! Holy Father, on behalf of Michelle and myself, welcome to the White House. Our backyard is not typically this crowded – but the size and spirit of today’s gathering is just a small reflection of the deep devotion of some 70 million American Catholics . . . and the way your message of love and hope has inspired so many people, across our nation and around the world. On behalf of the American people, it is my great honor and privilege to welcome you to the United States of America.Today, we mark many firsts. Your Holiness, you have been celebrated as the first pope from the Americas. This is your first visit to the United States. And you are also the first pontiff to share an encyclical through a Twitter account. Holy Father, your visit not only allows me, in some small way, to reciprocate the extraordinary hospitality you extended to me at the Vatican last year. It also reveals how much all Americans, from every background and of every faith, value the role that the Catholic Church plays in strengthening America. From my time working in impoverished neighborhoods with the Catholic Church in Chicago to my travels as president, I’ve seen firsthand how, every day, Catholic communities, priests, nuns and laity feed the hungry, heal the sick, shelter the homeless, educate our children and fortify the faith that sustains so many. What is true in America is true around the world. From the busy streets of Buenos Aires to remote villages in Kenya, Catholic organizations serve the poor, minister to prisoners, build schools and homes, and operate orphanages and hospitals. And just as the Church has stood with those struggling to break the chains of poverty, it has given voice and hope to those seeking to break the chains of violence and oppression. And yet, I believe the excitement around your visit must be attributed not only to your role as pope, but to your unique qualities as a person. In your humility, your embrace of simplicity, the gentleness of your words and the generosity of your spirit, we see a living example of Jesus’ teachings, a leader whose moral authority comes not just through words but also through deeds. You call on all of us, Catholic and non-Catholic alike, to put the “least of these” at the center of our concern. You remind us that in the eyes of God our measure as individuals, and as societies, is not determined by wealth or power or station or celebrity, but by how well we hew to Scripture’s call to lift up the poor and the marginalized, to stand up for justice and against inequality, and to ensure that every human being is able to live in dignity – because we are all made in the image of God.You remind us that “the Lord’s most powerful message” is mercy. That means welcoming the stranger with empathy and a truly open heart – from the refugee who flees war-torn lands to the immigrant who leaves home in search of a better life. It means showing compassion and love for the marginalized and the outcast, those who have suffered and those who seek redemption. You remind us of the costs of war, particularly on the powerless and defenseless, and urge us toward the imperative of peace. Holy Father, we are grateful for your invaluable support of our new beginning with the Cuban people, which holds out the promise of better relations between our countries, greater cooperation across our hemisphere and a better life for the Cuban people. We thank you for your passionate voice against the deadly conflicts that ravage the lives of so many men, women and children; and your call for nations to resist the sirens of war and resolve disputes through diplomacy. You remind us that people are only truly free when they can practice their faith freely. Here in the United States, we cherish religious liberty. Yet around the world at this very moment, children of God, including Christians, are targeted and even killed because of their faith. Believers are prevented from gathering at their places of worship. The faithful are imprisoned. Churches are destroyed. So we stand with you in defense of religious freedom and interfaith dialogue, knowing that people everywhere must be able to live out their faith free from fear and intimidation. And, Holy Father, you remind us that we have a sacred obligation to protect our planet – God’s magnificent gift to us. We support your call to all world leaders to support the communities most vulnerable to a changing climate and to come together to preserve our precious world for future generations.Your Holiness, in your words and deeds, you set a profound moral example. And in these gentle but firm reminders of our obligations to God and to one another, you are shaking us out of complacency. All of us may, at times, experience discomfort when we contemplate the distance between how we lead our daily lives and what we know to be true and right. But I believe such discomfort is a blessing, for it points to something better. You shake our conscience from slumber; you call on us to rejoice in Good News, and give us confidence that we can come together, in humility and service, and pursue a world that is more loving, more just, and more free. Here at home and around the world, may our generation heed your call to “never remain on the sidelines of this march of living hope!”For that great gift of hope, Holy Father, we thank you, and welcome you, with joy and gratitude, to the United States of America.http://www.mcclatchydc.com/

Pope Francis Cites Victims From Church's 'Difficult Moments'-By Meghan Keneally-Sep 23, 2015, 12:32 PM ET-abcnews

Pope Francis is clearly trying to send a message in his Washington, D.C., speeches today as he is expected to allude to the church child abuse scandal in a speech to U.S. bishops. In a released copy of his speech, he does not specifically reference the pedophilia that has rocked the Roman Catholic Church, but he makes mention of the victims."I am also conscious of the courage with which you have faced difficult moments in the recent history of the Church in this country without fear of self-criticism and at the cost of mortification and great sacrifice," the pope says in his speech, which he is delivering in Italian."I realize how much the pain of recent years has weighed upon you and I have supported your generous commitment to bring healing to victims – in the knowledge that in healing we too are healed – and to work to ensure that such crimes will never be repeated," he says.He goes on to say that "it is not my intention to offer a plan or to devise a strategy" nor has he "come to judge you or to lecture you.""I have no wish to tell you what to do, because we all know what it is that the Lord asks of us. Instead, I would turn once again to the demanding task – ancient yet never new – of seeking out the paths we need to take and the spirit with which we need to work," Pope Francis says.He does speak about others later in his speech, listing "the innocent victim of abortion, children who die of hunger or from bombings, immigrants who drown in the search for a better tomorrow, the elderly or the sick who are considered a burden, the victims of terrorism, wars, violence and drug trafficking, the environment devastated by man’s predatory relationship with nature.""It is wrong, then, to look the other way or to remain silent," he says. Here is the full text of his speech, delivered today at St. Matthew's Cathedral in Washington D.C.:Dear Brother Bishops, I am pleased that we can meet at this point in the apostolic mission which has brought me to your country. I thank Cardinal Wuerl and Archbishop Kurtz for their kind words in your name. I am very appreciative of your welcome and the generous efforts made to help plan and organize my stay.As I look out with affection at you, their pastors, I would like to embrace all the local Churches over which you exercise loving responsibility. I would ask you to share my affection and spiritual closeness with the People of God throughout this vast land. The heart of the Pope expands to include everyone. To testify to the immensity of God’s love is the heart of the mission entrusted to the Successor of Peter, the Vicar of the One who on the cross embraced the whole of mankind. May no member of Christ’s Body and the American people feel excluded from the Pope’s embrace. Wherever the name of Jesus is spoken, may the Pope’s voice also be heard to affirm that: “He is the Savior”! From your great coastal cities to the plains of the Midwest, from the deep South to the far reaches of the West, wherever your people gather in the Eucharistic assembly, may the Pope be not simply a name but a felt presence, sustaining the fervent plea of the Bride: “Come, Lord!”Whenever a hand reaches out to do good or to show the love of Christ, to dry a tear or bring comfort to the lonely, to show the way to one who is lost or to console a broken heart, to help the fallen or to teach those thirsting for truth, to forgive or to offer a new start in God… know that the Pope is at your side and supports you. He puts his hand on your own, a hand wrinkled with age, but by God’s grace still able to support and encourage. My first word to you is one of thanksgiving to God for the power of the Gospel which has brought about remarkable growth of Christ’s Church in these lands and enabled its generous contribution, past and present, to American society and to the world. I thank you most heartily for your generous solidarity with the Apostolic See and the support you give to the spread of the Gospel in many suffering areas of our world. I appreciate the unfailing commitment of the Church in America to the cause of life and that of the family, which is the primary reason for my present visit. I am well aware of the immense efforts you have made to welcome and integrate those immigrants who continue to look to America, like so many others before them, in the hope of enjoying its blessings of freedom and prosperity. I also appreciate the efforts which you are making to fulfill the Church’s mission of education in schools at every level and in the charitable services offered by your numerous institutions. These works are often carried out without appreciation or support, often with heroic sacrifice, out of obedience to a divine mandate which we may not disobey.I am also conscious of the courage with which you have faced difficult moments in the recent history of the Church in this country without fear of self-criticism and at the cost of mortification and great sacrifice. Nor have you been afraid to divest whatever is unessential in order to regain the authority and trust which is demanded of ministers of Christ and rightly expected by the faithful. I realize how much the pain of recent years has weighed upon you and I have supported your generous commitment to bring healing to victims – in the knowledge that in healing we too are healed – and to work to ensure that such crimes will never be repeated.I speak to you as the Bishop of Rome, called by God in old age, and from a land which is also American, to watch over the unity of the universal Church and to encourage in charity the journey of all the particular Churches toward ever greater knowledge, faith and love of Christ. Reading over your names, looking at your faces, knowing the extent of your churchmanship and conscious of the devotion which you have always shown for the Successor of Peter, I must tell you that I do not feel a stranger in your midst. I am a native of a land which is also vast, with great open ranges, a land which, like your own, received the faith from itinerant missionaries. I too know how hard it is to sow the Gospel among people from different worlds, with hearts often hardened by the trials of a lengthy journey. Nor am I unaware of the efforts made over the years to build up the Church amid the prairies, mountains, cities and suburbs of a frequently inhospitable land, where frontiers are always provisional and easy answers do not always work. What does work is the combination of the epic struggle of the pioneers and the homely wisdom and endurance of the settlers. As one of your poets has put it, “strong and tireless wings” combined with the wisdom of one who “knows the mountains”.1-I do not speak to you with my voice alone, but in continuity with the words of my predecessors. From the birth of this nation, when, following the American Revolution, the first diocese was erected in Baltimore, the Church of Rome has always been close to you; you have never lacked its constant assistance and encouragement. In recent decades, three Popes have visited you and left behind a remarkable legacy of teaching. Their words remain timely and have helped to inspire the long-term goals which you have set for the Church in this country. It is not my intention to offer a plan or to devise a strategy. I have not come to judge you or to lecture you. I trust completely in the voice of the One who “teaches all things” (Jn 14:26). Allow me only, in the freedom of love, to speak to you as a brother among brothers. I have no wish to tell you what to do, because we all know what it is that the Lord asks of us. Instead, I would turn once again to the demanding task – ancient yet never new – of seeking out the paths we need to take and the spirit with which we need to work. Without claiming to be exhaustive, I would share with you some reflections which I consider helpful for our mission. We are bishops of the Church, shepherds appointed by God to feed his flock. Our greatest joy is to be shepherds, and only shepherds, pastors with undivided hearts and selfless devotion. We need to preserve this joy and never let ourselves be robbed of it. The evil one roars like a lion, anxious to devour it, wearing us down in our resolve to be all that we are called to be, not for ourselves but in gift and service to the “Shepherd of our souls” (1 Pet 2:25). The heart of our identity is to be sought in constant prayer, in preaching (Acts 6:4) and in shepherding the flock entrusted to our care (Jn 21:15-17; Acts 20:28-31).Ours must not be just any kind of prayer, but familiar union with Christ, in which we daily encounter his gaze and sense that he is asking us the question: “Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?” (Mk 3:31-34). One in which we can calmly reply: “Lord, here is your mother, here are your brothers! I hand them over to you; they are the ones whom you entrusted to me”. Such trusting union with Christ is what nourishes the life of a pastor. It is not about preaching complicated doctrines, but joyfully proclaiming Christ who died and rose for our sake. The “style” of our mission should make our hearers feel that the message we preach is meant “for us”. May the word of God grant meaning and fullness to every aspect of their lives; may the sacraments nourish them with that food which they cannot procure for themselves; may the closeness of the shepherd make them them long once again for the Father’s embrace. Be vigilant that the flock may always encounter in the heart of their pastor that “taste of eternity” which they seek in vain in the things of this world. May they always hear from you a word of appreciation for their efforts to confirm in liberty and justice the prosperity in which this land abounds. At the same time, may you never lack the serene courage to proclaim that “we must work not for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures for eternal life” (Jn 6:27).Shepherds who do not pasture themselves but are able to step back, away from the center, to “decrease”, in order to feed God’s family with Christ. Who keep constant watch, standing on the heights to look out with God’s eyes on the flock which is his alone. Who ascend to the height of the cross of God’s Son, the sole standpoint which opens to the shepherd the heart of his flock.Shepherds who do not lower our gaze, concerned only with our concerns, but raise it constantly toward the horizons which God opens before us and which surpass all that we ourselves can foresee or plan. Who also watch over ourselves, so as to flee the temptation of narcissism, which blinds the eyes of the shepherd, makes his voice unrecognizable and his actions fruitless. In the countless paths which lie open to your pastoral concern, remember to keep focused on the core which unifies everything: “You did it unto me” (Mt 25:31-45).Certainly it is helpful for a bishop to have the farsightedness of a leader and the shrewdness of an administrator, but we fall into hopeless decline whenever we confuse the power of strength with the strength of that powerlessness with which God has redeemed us. Bishops need to be lucidly aware of the battle between light and darkness being fought in this world. Woe to us, however, if we make of the cross a banner of worldly struggles and fail to realize that the price of lasting victory is allowing ourselves to be wounded and consumed (Phil 2:1-11).We all know the anguish felt by the first Eleven, huddled together, assailed and overwhelmed by the fear of sheep scattered because the shepherd had been struck. But we also know that we have been given a spirit of courage and not of timidity. So we cannot let ourselves be paralyzed by fear. I know that you face many challenges, that the field in which you sow is unyielding and that there is always the temptation to give in to fear, to lick one’s wounds, to think back on bygone times and to devise harsh responses to fierce opposition. And yet we are promoters of the culture of encounter. We are living sacraments of the embrace between God’s riches and our poverty. We are witnesses of the abasement and the condescension of God who anticipates in love our every response.Dialogue is our method, not as a shrewd strategy but out of fidelity to the One who never wearies of visiting the marketplace, even at the eleventh hour, to propose his offer of love (Mt 20:1-16).The path ahead, then, is dialogue among yourselves, dialogue in your presbyterates, dialogue with lay persons, dialogue with families, dialogue with society. I cannot ever tire of encouraging you to dialogue fearlessly. The richer the heritage which you are called to share with parrhesia, the more eloquent should be the humility with which you should offer it. Do not be afraid to set out on that “exodus” which is necessary for all authentic dialogue. Otherwise, we fail to understand the thinking of others, or to realize deep down that the brother or sister we wish to reach and redeem, with the power and the closeness of love, counts more than their positions, distant as they may be from what we hold as true and certain. Harsh and divisive language does not befit the tongue of a pastor, it has no place in his heart; although it may momentarily seem to win the day, only the enduring allure of goodness and love remains truly convincing. We need to let the Lord’s words echo constantly in our hearts: “Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, who am meek and humble of heart, and you will find refreshment for your souls” (Mt 11:28-30). Jesus’ yoke is a yoke of love and thus a pledge of refreshment. At times in our work we can be burdened by a sense of loneliness, and so feel the heaviness of the yoke that we forget that we have received it from the Lord. It seems to be ours alone, and so we drag it like weary oxen working a dry field, troubled by the thought that we are laboring in vain. We can forget the profound refreshment which is indissolubly linked to the One who has made us the promise. We need to learn from Jesus, or better to learn Jesus, meek and humble; to enter into his meekness and his humility by contemplating his way of acting; to lead our Churches and our people – not infrequently burdened by the stress of everyday life – to the ease of the Lord’s yoke. And to remember that Jesus’ Church is kept whole not by “consuming fire from heaven” (Lk 9:54), but by the secret warmth of the Spirit, who “heals what is wounded, bends what is rigid, straightens what is crooked”.The great mission which the Lord gives us is one which we carry out in communion, collegially. The world is already so torn and divided, brokenness is now everywhere. Consequently, the Church, “the seamless garment of the Lord” cannot allow herself to be rent, broken or fought over. Our mission as bishops is first and foremost to solidify unity, a unity whose content is defined by the Word of God and the one Bread of Heaven. With these two realities each of the Churches entrusted to us remains Catholic, because open to, and in communion with, all the particular Churches and with the Church of Rome which “presides in charity”. It is imperative, therefore, to watch over that unity, to safeguard it, to promote it and to bear witness to it as a sign and instrument which, beyond every barrier, unites nations, races, classes and generations.May the forthcoming Holy Year of Mercy, by drawing us into the fathomless depths of God’s heart in which no division dwells, be for all of you a privileged moment for strengthening communion, perfecting unity, reconciling differences, forgiving one another and healing every rift, that your light may shine forth like “a city built on a hill” (Mt 5:14).This service to unity is particularly important for this nation, whose vast material and spiritual, cultural and political, historical and human, scientific and technological resources impose significant moral responsibilities in a world which is seeking, confusedly and laboriously, new balances of peace, prosperity and integration. It is an essential part of your mission to offer to the United States of America the humble yet powerful leaven of communion. May all mankind know that the presence in its midst of the “sacrament of unity” (Lumen Gentium, 1) is a guarantee that its fate is not decay and dispersion. This kind of witness is a beacon whose light can reassure men and women sailing through the dark clouds of life that a sure haven awaits them, that they will not crash on the reefs or be overwhelmed by the waves. I encourage you, then, to confront the challenging issues of our time. Ever present within each of them is life as gift and responsibility. The future freedom and dignity of our societies depends on how we face these challenges. The innocent victim of abortion, children who die of hunger or from bombings, immigrants who drown in the search for a better tomorrow, the elderly or the sick who are considered a burden, the victims of terrorism, wars, violence and drug trafficking, the environment devastated by man’s predatory relationship with nature – at stake in all of this is the gift of God, of which we are noble stewards but not masters. It is wrong, then, to look the other way or to remain silent. No less important is the Gospel of the Family, which in the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia I will emphatically proclaim together with you and the entire Church. These essential aspects of the Church’s mission  belong to the core of what we have received from the Lord. It is our duty to preserve and communicate them, even when the tenor of the times becomes resistent and even hostile to that message (Evangelii Gaudium, 34-39). I urge you to offer this witness, with the means and creativity born of love, and with the humility of truth. It needs to be preached and proclaimed to those without, but also to find room in people’s hearts and in the conscience of society. To this end, it is important that the Church in the United States also be a humble home, a family fire which attracts men and women through the attractive light and warmth of love. As pastors, we know well how much darkness and cold there is in this world; we know the loneliness and the neglect experienced by many people, even amid great resources of communication and material wealth. We see their fear in the face of life, their despair and the many forms of escapism to which it gives rise.Consequently, only a Church which can gather around the family fire remains able to attract others. And not any fire, but the one which blazed forth on Easter morn. The risen Lord continues to challenge the Church’s pastors through the quiet plea of so many of our brothers and sisters: “Have you something to eat?” We need to recognize the Lord’s voice, as the apostles did on the shore of the lake of Tiberius (Jn 21:4-12). It becomes even more urgent to grow in the certainty that the embers of his presence, kindled in the fire of his passion, precede us and will never die out. Whenever this certainty weakens, we end up being caretakers of ash, and not guardians and dispensers of the true light and the warmth which causes our hearts to burn within us (Lk 24:32).Before concluding these reflections, allow me to offer two recommendations which are close to my heart. The first refers to your fatherhood as bishops. Be pastors close to people, pastors who are neighbors and servants. Let this closeness be expressed in a special way towards your priests. Support them, so that they can continue to serve Christ with an undivided heart, for this alone can bring fulfillment to ministers of Christ. I urge you, then, not to let them be content with half-measures. Find ways to encourage their spiritual growth, lest they yield to the temptation to become notaries and bureaucrats, but instead reflect the motherhood of the Church, which gives birth to and raises her sons and daughters. Be vigilant lest they tire of getting up to answer those who knock on their door by night, just when they feel entitled to rest (Lk 11:5-8). Train them to be ready to stop, care for, soothe, lift up and assist those who, “by chance” find themselves stripped of all they thought they had (Lk 10:29-37).My second recommendation has to do with immigrants. I ask you to excuse me if in some way I am pleading my own case. The Church in the United States knows like few others the hopes present in the hearts of these “pilgrims”. From the beginning you have learned their languages, promoted their cause, made their contributions your own, defended their rights, helped them to prosper, and kept alive the flame of their faith. Even today, no American institution does more for immigrants than your Christian communities. Now you are facing this stream of Latin immigration which affects many of your dioceses. Not only as the Bishop of Rome, but also as a pastor from the South, I feel the need to thank and encourage you. Perhaps it will not be easy for you to look into their soul; perhaps you will be challenged by their diversity. But know that they also possess resources meant to be shared. So do not be afraid to welcome them. Offer them the warmth of the love of Christ and you will unlock the mystery of their heart. I am certain that, as so often in the past, these people will enrich America and its Church.May God bless you and Our Lady watch over you!

Gross Tells Fed to `Get Off Zero Now!' as Economies Run on Empty-Mary Childs-Updated on September 23, 2015 — 2:06 PM EDT-bloomberg

Bill Gross said the Federal Reserve needs to raise interest rates as soon as possible, trading some near-term market losses for longer-term stability and a healthier financial system. If zero interest rates become the long-term norm, economic participants will soon run on empty because their investments aren’t producing the gains or cash flow needed to finance past promises in an aging society, he wrote in an investment outlook on Wednesday for Denver-based Janus Capital Group Inc. That’s already beginning to happen as Detroit, Puerto Rico, and, he predicts, soon Chicago, struggle to meet their liabilities.“My advice to them is this: get off zero and get off quick,” Gross urged the central bankers. He said it’s time for a “new thesis” that allows people in developed economies to save, enabling liability-based business models to survive and spurring more private investment, “which is the essence of a healthy economy. Near term pain? Yes. Long term gain? Almost certainly. Get off zero now!”The Fed last week decided to keep its benchmark rate near zero, showing reluctance to end an era of record monetary stimulus in a time of market turmoil, rising international risks and slow inflation at home. Futures traders are betting the Fed is unlikely to act in October, as they put 43 percent odds on an increase by December and 51 percent by January, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.‘Wreak Havoc’-Last week, Gross said the Fed was right to keep interest rates near zero at the September meeting, and that it may take years for the economy and rates to return to more normal levels. Monetary policy has exhausted its effectiveness, with asset prices distorted by years of near-zero rates, and fiscal policy will be needed to get the economy back on stronger footing, Gross said in a Sept. 18 interview with Tom Keene and Michael McKee on Bloomberg Radio.“They did the right thing,” he said in that interview, citing current financial conditions. “When they did the wrong thing, and this is way back in terms of past history, they went below 2 percent in terms of the short-term rate. They didn’t have to do that, they didn’t have to go to zero. So now getting back up there will wreak havoc on asset markets.”Gross, 71, joined Janus about a year ago after leaving Pacific Investment Management Co., where he once ran the world’s biggest mutual fund. He now oversees the $1.4 billion Janus Global Unconstrained Bond Fund. The fund lost 1.7 percent this year, putting it behind 76 percent of similar funds, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.-Revolving Spit’-Gross underscored that it’s not just insurance companies and giant pension funds that are suffering from low interest rates. Investors aren’t getting the 8 percent to 10 percent returns they counted on to pay for education, health care, retirement or vacation.“Mainstream America with their 401(k)s are in a similar pickle,” he wrote. “They are not so much in a pickle barrel as they are on a revolving spit, being slowly cooked alive while central bankers focus on their Taylor models and fight non-existent inflation,” Gross said, referring to a rule named for Stanford University economist John Taylor.Fellow famed bond manager Jeffrey Gundlach, co-founder of $80 billion DoubleLine Capital, sees a fifty-fifty chance the Fed will raise interest rates in December. Gundlach forecast “choppiness” in fixed-income markets, though he said yields won’t actually change much. Los Angeles-based Gundlach has been saying for months that the Fed may not be able to raise rates this year for reasons including a strong dollar.

Deutsche Bank Strategist: The Odds of the Federal Reserve Staying on Hold Until 2017 Are 'Up There'-The central bank won't hike until markets are "begging for it."-Luke Kawa-September 23, 2015 — 2:39 PM EDT-bloomberg

To some, the rally in equities since the Great Recession has been a symptom of central bank largesse, and financial markets have been in Federal Reserve-driven mode for an extended period of time.According to Dominic Konstam, global head of rates research at Deutsche Bank, the shoe is now on the other foot: We have a market-driven Fed.The strategist has written that liftoff, in terms of interest rates, will come only when the market is "begging for it." He appeared on BloombergTV to discuss exactly what that call entails. In the run-up to the September Fed meeting, a number of strategists cited the relatively low odds of an interest rate hike as a sign that the central bank would stay on hold for fear of roiling the markets with a move. Konstam echoed these sentiments. "At the end of the day, the market expectations will determine whether or not the Fed can actually do anything," he said. "And the Fed cannot fly in the face of the market if the market is saying, 'please don't raise rates,' without the risk that things are very very damaging in terms of the reaction." The probability of a hike implied by federal funds futures will have to be a lot higher before the central bank is able to act, Konstam believes. "I think you have to give the market a lot of credit, that it kind of understands things—perhaps a little bit better than, certainly, some of the members of the FOMC," he said.In the meantime, continued commentary on the issues the U.S. central bank needs to see resolved (a list that includes the status of China and other emerging markets, inflation, and wages) will help condition the markets for a hike as progress is made and recognized by monetary policy makers. The strategist opined that the probability of the Fed keeping rates on hold until 2017 is "up there."The central tenet underpinning the strategists' worldview is the extremely low level of core inflation once the rise in housing costs is removed from the mix:-He views housing inflation as indicative of structural issues, noting that it's been an extremely large contributor to core inflation 's annual rise of 1.8 percent.Core consumer price inflation, without counting housing, was running at 0.6 percent year-over-year, said Konstam, and this adjusted metric will probably continue to decelerate in 2016.The notion that the market is fed up with near-zero interest rates isn't a foregone conclusion, he argued. Some strategists have contended that abstaining from liftoff was the reason why equities moved a leg lower, reasoning that beginning the process of normalization would be indicative of a turn to, well, normality. By this view, a rate hike would be positive for risk assets.Konstam took umbrage with this reasoning, pointing out that there could well have been a massive decline in stock and bond prices in an alternate universe in which the Fed elected to hike rates last week. What played a role in the market's reaction, he believes, were the reasons monetary policymakers gave for keeping rates near zero. If the Fed decided to maintain the status quo because it wanted more of a good thing (higher nominal growth), the reaction may have been more constructive. But framing the non-hike as attributable to concerns about global growth was clearly not positive for risk appetite.

European Detroit' Fear Grips VW Company Town as Scandal Widens-Stefan Nicola-September 23, 2015 — 5:31 AM EDT-bloomberg

Nowhere is Volkswagen AG’s widening emissions scandal being felt more acutely than in Wolfsburg, the ultimate company town in Germany. Here, a hundred miles west of Berlin, VW funds the university, runs the biggest museum and owns the local soccer club, which is competing against some of the best teams in the world in the Champions League."If you’d visualize traffic in and out of the city, it would look like a pulse and the heart is the VW plant," cab driver Karsten Raabe says as he steers his Skoda by the sprawling complex, where hundreds of gleaming cars sit in parking lots and on the back of freight trains. “Without VW, this city and the entire region would die. We’d become a European Detroit,” which declared the biggest U.S. municipal bankruptcy in 2013.More than seven decades after the Nazis built Wolfsburg from scratch to make the original ‘people’s car,’ VW employs about 72,000 people in the city of 125,000. The company’s annual sales have quadrupled over the past two decades to 202 billion euros ($225 billion). The boom has helped drive unemployment down to 4.9 percent, well below the national average.Even the main tourist attraction is a tribute to VW: Autostadt, a 28-hectare theme park with road-safety tracks and vintage cars that was completed in 2000 for about 400 million euros. And then there are the 7.8 million VW-branded sausages that are made in Wolfsburg and sold nationwide each year.-‘Black Monday’-On Tuesday at Saloniki, a wood-paneled tavern near the central station, six men heatedly debated VW’s admission that it cheated on U.S. emissions tests, sparking an investigation that has wiped about 25 billion euros off the company’s market value.“Black Monday for VW” read the front-page headline of the local newspaper sprawled on the bar in front of them. The men discussed details such as how big the fines will be, how many jobs might be cut and what role was played by CEO Martin Winterkorn, who will get a chance to make his case before the executive committee of VW’s supervisory board on Wednesday.“Volkswagen’s development affects our city in a special way,” Mayor Klaus Mohr, whose office is on a street named after automobile icon Ferdinand Porsche, said in a statement. “In the interest of the city, I hope the necessary clearing up is done quickly and thoroughly.”Global Probe-Germany’s government plans to send an investigative team to Wolfsburg this week to speak with officials and examine documents. Regulators from France, South Korea and Italy have also vowed to scrutinize the company’s vehicles.Even in soccer, VW is stumbling. As key supervisory board members held an emergency meeting in a nearby community late Tuesday, its club, VfL Wolfsburg, was thrashed 5-1 by Bayern Munich. A substitute player scored all five goals in the space of nine minutes in the second half. The people on the street here appear to be holding their breath, hoping for the crisis to pass."Everyone knows someone who works at VW," Ivonne Schuckert-Thiele said from behind the counter of a Wolfsburger Nachrichten newsstand and ticket outlet. Those workers, for now, seem to be quietly rallying around their employer.Three men and two woman, when asked about the scandal in different parts of the city, all politely declined to comment, saying with a smile or a shrug: “I work at VW.”

Philadelphia giving pope a bike with angel wing chain guard-Associated Press-SEPT 22,15-YAHOONEWS

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Philadelphia has a couple of gifts for visiting Pope Francis — an ivory-bone china bowl featuring images of Independence Hall and St. Peter's Basilica, and a bicycle with a chain guard shaped like an angel's wing.Mayor Michael Nutter presented the gifts to Archbishop Charles Chaput (SHAP'-yoo) at the opening ceremony Tuesday for the World Meeting of Families, the Vatican-sponsored conference that's bringing Francis to Philadelphia.Francis arrives in the city Saturday after stops in Washington and New York. The custom-made bowl from suburban Philadelphia-based Lenox features 24-karat gold trim and inscriptions of values shared by Francis and America's founding fathers: liberty, friendship, unity, peace and love. The bike evokes the pope's push for environmentally friendly transportation. It's a Breezer Downtown 8, inscribed with Francis' name in Spanish and church symbols.

Pope of the poor arrives in US denying he's a liberal-Associated Press By NICOLE WINFIELD and RACHEL ZOLL-SEPT 22,15-YAHOONEWS

WASHINGTON (AP) — The pope of the poor arrived for his first-ever visit to the world's wealthiest superpower Tuesday denying he is a leftist and riding in a frugal little family car, windows rolled down.Pope Francis' chartered plane from Cuba touched down at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland, where President Barack Obama and his wife and daughters paid him the rare honor of meeting him at the bottom of the stairs on the red-carpeted tarmac. Presidents usually make important visitors come to them at the White House.Emerging from the aircraft to loud cheers from a crowd of hundreds, the smiling 78-year-old pontiff removed his skullcap in the windy weather and made his way down the steps in his white robes. He was welcomed by a military honor guard, chanting schoolchildren, politicians, and Roman Catholic clerics in black robes with vivid sashes of scarlet and purple. Joe Biden, the nation's first Catholic vice president, and his wife were among those who greeted him.Eschewing a limousine, the pope climbed into the back of a little Fiat sandwiched between huge black SUVs. He promptly rolled down the windows, enabling the cheering, whooping crowds to see him as his motorcade took him to the Vatican diplomatic mission in Washington, where he will stay while in the nation's capital. The choice of car was in keeping with his simple habits and his stand against consumerism. His decision to roll down the windows reflected his penchant for trying to connect to ordinary people despite the tight security around him.During his six-day, three-city visit to the U.S., the pope will meet with the president on Wednesday, address Congress on Thursday, speak at the United Nations in New York on Friday and take part in a Vatican-sponsored conference on the family in Philadelphia over the weekend. The Argentine known as the "slum pope" for ministering to the downtrodden in his native Buenos Aires is expected to urge America to take better care of the environment and the poor and return to its founding ideals of religious liberty and open arms toward immigrants.During the flight, Francis defended himself against conservative criticism that his condemnation of trickle-down economics makes him a communist."I am certain that I have never said anything beyond what is in the social doctrine of the church," he said. He said some may have misinterpreted his writings in a way that makes him sound "a little bit more left-leaning," but he said that's wrong.Joking about doubts in some quarters over whether he is truly Catholic, he said, "If I have to recite the Creed, I'm ready."Francis is the fourth pope ever to visit the United States.Francis' enormous popularity, propensity for wading into crowds and insistence on using an open-sided Jeep rather than a bulletproof popemobile have complicated things for U.S. law enforcement, which has mounted one of the biggest security operations in American history to keep him safe. The measures are unprecedented for a papal trip and could make it nearly impossible for many ordinary Americans to get anywhere close to Francis. For all the attention likely to be paid to Francis' speeches, including the first address from a pope to Congress, his more personal gestures — visiting with immigrants, prisoners and the homeless — could yield some of the most memorable images of the trip."What the pope does in the United States will be more important than what he says," said Mat Schmalz, a religious studies professor at Holy Cross college in Worcester, Massachusetts. "There are a lot of things he will say about capitalism and about wealth inequality, but many Americans and politicians have already made up their minds on these issues. What I would look for is a particular gesture, an unscripted act, that will move people."In Cuba, Francis basked in the adulation of Cubans grateful to him for brokering the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between the U.S. and the communist island. On the plane, though, he told reporters he will not use his speech to Congress to call specifically for the U.S. to lift the Cold War-era trade embargo against Cuba.He arrives at a moment of bitter infighting across the country over gay rights, immigration, abortion and race relations — issues that are always simmering in the U.S. but have boiled over in the heat of a presidential campaign. Capitol Hill is consumed by disputes over abortion and federal funding for Planned Parenthood after hidden-camera videos showed its officials talking about the organization's practice of sending tissue from aborted fetuses to medical researchers. While Francis has staunchly upheld church teaching against abortion, he has recently allowed ordinary priests, and not just bishops, to absolve women of the sin.Francis' visit comes three months after the U.S. Supreme Court legalized gay marriage, putting U.S. bishops on the defensive and sharply dividing Americans over how much they should accommodate religious objectors. The pope has strongly upheld church teaching against same-sex marriage but adopted a welcoming tone toward gays themselves, saying, "Who am I to judge?" when asked about a supposedly gay priest.Americans are also wrestling anew with issues of racism. A series of deaths in recent years of unarmed black men at the hands of law enforcement has intensified debate over the American criminal justice system. Francis will see that system up close when he meets with inmates at a Pennsylvania prison.U.S. bishops, meanwhile, expect Francis will issue a strong call for immigration reform, a subject that has heated up with hardline anti- immigrant rhetoric from some of the Republican presidential candidates, especially Donald Trump. Francis, the first Latin American pope, will be sending a powerful message on that front by delivering the vast majority of his speeches in his native Spanish."Our presidential candidates have been using immigrants as a wedge issue," Miami Archbishop Thomas Wenski said. "It's our hope that the visit of Pope Francis will change this narrative."Francis' most eagerly watched speech will be his address to Congress. Republicans and many conservative Catholics have bristled at his indictment of the excesses of capitalism that he says impoverish people and risk turning the Earth into an "immense pile of filth." Many conservatives have likewise rejected his call for urgent action against global warming.Nevertheless, Francis enjoys popularity ratings in the U.S. that would be the envy of any world leader. A New York Times/CBS News poll conducted last week found 63 percent of Catholics have a favorable view of him, and nearly 8 in 10 approve the direction he is taking the church.Just how far Francis presses his agenda in Washington is the big question.Paul Vallely, author of "Pope Francis, The Struggle for the Soul of Catholicism," predicted both "warmth" and "some finger-wagging" from the pope."He won't necessarily confront people head-on," Vallely said, "but he'll change the priorities."___AP reporter Erica Werner contributed from Washington.___Follow Nicole Winfield at www.twitter.com/nwinfield; Rachel Zoll at www.twitter.com/rzollAP___AP reporter Erica Werner contributed from Washington.___Follow Nicole Winfield at www.twitter.com/nwinfield; Rachel Zoll at www.twitter.com/rzollAP

09/22/2015-VATICAN INSIDER-I dream of Pope and Xi Jinping shaking hands, says Bishop of Shanghai--Xi Jinping-Thaddeus Ma Daqin has published an essay on the potential start of a dialogue between China and the Holy See. He expresses him hopes for a “close encounter” between Pope Francis and the Chinese president: “if these two leaders who are hugely influential in the world shake hands, not only me – for I am all but a small ant at the foot of the hill where Our Lady of Sheshan stands – but the entire world would be moved.”-Gianni Valente

Rome-Will Pope Francis and President Xi Jinping manage to at least “shake hands” when they meet in Washington this Thursday? The speculations made by some in various articles published before the papal voyage to Cuba and the US, about a potential “American” encounter between Bergoglio and Xi Jinping, have been unexpectedly evoked by a very special “supporter” of this “cause”: Thaddeus Ma Daqin, the Catholic Bishop of Shanghai, ordained in 2012, who was banned from practicing the episcopal ministry by the Chinese authorities.  Yesterday, Bishop Ma published a brief essay on his very popular blog about the relations between China and the Holy See and China’s presence on the international stage. A dense and well-articulated intervention to launch this key message: “In the US,” Ma Daqin writes amongst other things, “our President Xi Jinping and Pope Francis will have the opportunity to cross paths but will be see that much awaited hand-shake? I cannot wait for this hand-shake to happen.”Thaddeus Ma Daqin’s story is well known: he was ordained a bishop in 201, with the “joint approval” of the Holy See and the Beijing government – this was made possible in great part thanks to the work of his eminent predecessor, the Jesuit bishop Aloyisius Jin Luxian – but from the very day of his ordination, Ma Daqin was confined to the seminary of Shanghai by the Chinese authorities because he announced his intention to renounce the duties he had performed until that point in the Chinese Catholic Patriotic Assiociation. The Chinese College of Bishops (another body controlled by civil powers, that is not recognised by the Holy See) even went as far as to punish him by forbidding him to carry out the episcopal ministry and suspend him from public exercise of the priesthood for two years. This “sentence” ended in June 2014. Since then, the Diocese of Shanghai has faced an impasse, with increasing divisions among the diocesan clergy.Recently, authorities have loosened their grip on the bishop to a certain extent. He is now allowed to receive people at the seminary in Sheshan and to celebrate mass with groups of faithful. Even when he faced tougher restrictions though, Ma Daqin continued to communicate his pastoral and spiritual reflections via his personal blog. This is where he published yesterday’s essay on the much-hoped for hand-shake between Xi Jinping and Pope Francis. He also shared these thoughts via his personal WeChat account as well as on Weibo, a very popular Chinese microblogging site. At the moment, Ma Daqin’s “dream” seems unlikely to come true: it would have been plausible to suppose that the two might meet at the UN headquarters in New York but the Pope and Xi Jin ping are going to be there on different days. Nevertheless, Bishop Ma’s essay contains a number of interesting points that are worth noting. Our President, Xi Jinpin,” the text starts off by saying, “has begun a state visit to the United States. Our Pope Francis is also going to be there during the same period for a five-day apostolic visit. As a Chinese man I would like to see our President succeed in the US. As a Catholic, I rejoiced at the news that Pope Francis was also going there. The fact that the two leaders will both be in Washington on 24 September captured my attention.”Bishop Ma then puts his geo-political analyst hat on and takes readers through the hsitory of US-China relations, from President Richard Nixon’s visit to Mao Zedong in 1972, to the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1979. From that moment on, the text reads, “Sino-American relations  have not always been rosy but their relationship as a whole is quite stable. Because both parties are aware that in today’s world, common interests prevail for the sake of development but they also share problems linked to environmental resources.” Bishop Ma quotes his professor, Professor Ni Shixiong of Fudan University, who persuaded him about the need for Cihan and the US to adopt a “win-win strategy that guarantees benefits for all, broadens areas of collaboration and encourages the spirit of peace in the world. I believe we can all hope for a cordial hand-shake between our President Xi Jinping and US President Obama.”Continuing his analysis, the Bishop of Shanghai also hones in on relations between the US and the Holy See, perhaps in an attempt to suggest useful comparisons to those in his country who deal with Sino-Vatican relations: Ma Daqin points to the long period of intense “diplomacy- free relations” between Washington and the Holy See. He recalls that the US and the Holy See only established full diplomatic relations in the 1980s. But the two had established fruitful links long before this, in the spirit of mutual recognition. In time, the US became more aware of the role the Holy played ont eh world scene, the Chinese Catholic bishop writes. So now, “it is easy to imagine a warm hand-shake between Francis and President Barack Obama”. The bishop goes on to list the recent signs that point to a fresh start in relations between China and the Holy See. He stresses that “the Vatican is not a State is the strictest sense of the word”. At the UN is participates as a non-member state permanent observer. He also underlines that the Holy See’s reputation is the field of international relations “is expanding”, partly due to the wise stances it has adopted in light of global and regional emergencies.“In the US, our President Xi Jinping and Pope Francis,” the Chinese bishop declares, “will have the opportunity to cross paths but will we see that much awaited hand-shake? I cannot wait for this hand-shake to happen.” To add historical depth to his hopes, Ma Daqin embarks on an account of the various occasions in which throughout China’s thousand-year-old history, Christianity made its entrance to the Celestial Empire. His description spans the expansion of the Nestorian Church in China, the arrival of the Franciscans with Giovanni da Montecorvino in the 18th century and then the feats of Matteo Ricci and the Jesuit missionaries in the 16th century, which failed with the “rites controversy”. Christianity’s final “entry” to Imperial China,” Ma Daqin recalls, “was before and after the humiliation of the Opium war” with missionaries arriving behind the canon-fire of foreign colonising powers, so “in the minds of many people in China, the Catholic Church is still seen as a foreign presence and is seen as an instrument that serves the interests of foreigners: this critical mistrust still exists to this day”. For this reason too, the Bishop of Shanghai says in his concluding remarks, “there have been many factors” that have hindered the growth of Christianity in China. But today, “our country is prospering and as and as it grows, it is increasingly able to trustingly understand others … We need to create friendships. When we interact with others, the world becomes smaller. Hostility on the other hand, creates distance and even close relatives can end up treating each other like strangers.” In this context, Ma Daqin outlines the gestures of friendship Pope Francis has extended to Chinese people and leaders since he was appointed to the Chair of Peter, from the letter he sent to President Xi Jinping after the papal election, to the words (“Do I want to go to China? Of course, I’d go tomorrow…”) he pronounced in front of journalists on board the return flight from South Korea. The successor of Jin Luxian points out that China allowed the papal flight to enter Chinese airspace. He recalls the meeting which did not take place between the Pope and the Dalai Lama and the revelations made by Wenhuibao, a Hong Kong newspaper that has close ties with Beijing, about China and the Vatican resuming dialogue by the end of the year, along with Cardinal Pietro Parolin’s interview with Famiglia Crisitiana. In this interview, the Vatican Secretary of State expressed his hope for the resumption of a “respectful dialogue” with China’s authorities. At the end of his articulate discussion, the Bishop of Shanghai emphasised his wish once again: “I cannot wait for a goodwill hand-shake so that constructive dialogue can begin on the basis of this good faith. These times require dialogue, there is a need for a deeper understanding of one another, the two need to understand each other and join forces to move on.  The world needs to establish contact with China.” But Daqin recalls the priorities of social harmony and the fight against corruption pursued by President Xi Jinping. He expresses the hope that China will become increasingly involved in shared decision-making processes on the world stage. “If these two leaders who are hugely influential in the world shake hands, not only me – for I am all but a small ant at the foot of the hill where Our Lady of Sheshan stands – but the entire world would be moved,” Thaddeus Ma Daqin said.
