The remaining 1,100 Palestinian fatalities in the war are believed to be innocent civilians caught in the line of fire.Hamas had wanted to take Israel by surprise at the outset of last summer’s operation by planning to launch a massive terror attack on an Israeli community near the Kerem Shalom crossing through a tunnel dug beneath the border. The organization’s political leadership decided to postpone the attack, however, allowing Israel to strike first. Egypt is also expanding the current no-go buffer zone along its 13-kilometer (8-mile) border with Gaza from one kilometer to five. Top Hamas terror commander Muhammad Deif is alive and has returned to active participation in the high command of the Islamist group’s military wing, according to Israeli intelligence assessments.Deif, 51, was targeted in an August 19 IDF strike on a home in the Sheikh Radwan neighborhood of the Gaza Strip last summer, during the 50-day war there. His wife and two children were killed in the bombing. Deif’s fate was not disclosed, although Hamas was quick to report that he had survived.The long-time commander of Hamas’s military wing has survived five Israeli assassination attempts. In September 2002 he emerged, wounded, from the charred remains of a vehicle that had been hit by an IAF missile. In 2006, he was wounded again, reportedly losing his limbs in an additional IAF strike.During the last days of the war in Gaza in the summer, the Shin Bet produced concrete evidence of Deif’s whereabouts on the bottom floor of a home on al-Ramal Street in Gaza City. At nine in the evening of August 19, the Air Force was cleared to drop bombs on the home and demolish it. According to an October episode of Israel’s top investigative news program, “Uvda,” the two bombs meant to reach the bottom floor did not detonate. Although there was no concrete evidence of Deif having survived yet again, a senior Shin Bet officer, identified only as R, made his disappointment plain without confirming directly that Deif was alive.As head of the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, Deif was responsible for planning and executing a long string of terror attacks that killed dozens or even hundreds of Israelis. He is one of Israel’s most sought-after targets for assassination.
According to Israeli sources, Deif was the key planner of a massive Hamas operation to attack an Israeli village on the Gaza border — possibly Kibbutz Kerem Shalom — and take soldiers and civilians hostage. The operation was allegedly planned months before the war in Gaza, and was intended to force Israeli leaders to respond with a massive ground assault in the Strip, where Hamas had spent months rigging explosives and digging tunnels that would allow its fighters to exact a steep cost from any IDF incursion force.Deif’s plans were stymied not by Israel, but by the political leadership of Hamas, which ordered the operation canceled, according to Israeli assessments. During the fighting, the Qassam Brigades tried to launch the operation a few times despite the opposition of the political wing, but were unable to carry it out once massive Israeli forces were operating in Gaza.Deif’s apparent recovery comes amid sustained efforts by Hamas to rebuild its offensive capabilities against Israel, including the conscription of new fighters, rehabilitating its cross-border attack tunnels and restocking its rocket arsenal with longer-distance rockets. The Israelis were instructed to move to a lower elevation, and while doing so were reportedly attacked by a group of locals. The Israelis managed to escape and climb aboard the helicopter, and were taken to a Nepalese army base.The website also reports that in a separate incident three other Israeli tourists were rescued by Israeli Harel Insurance company.

Israel’s aid team to the earthquake-battered Himalayan nation of Nepal is the largest in manpower of any international aid mission.Over 250 doctors and rescue personnel were part of an IDF delegation that landed Tuesday in the Nepalese capital, Kathmandu, in the wake of Saturday’s magnitude-7.8 earthquake that devastated large swaths of the mountainous country, killing at least 5,000 and leaving some 8,000 wounded and tens of thousands seeking shelter and food.The Israeli group set up a field hospital with 60 beds that began operations on Wednesday in coordination with the local army hospital.Nepal’s Prime Minister Sushil Koirala and the Nepalese Army’s chief of staff visited the field hospital to attend its opening ceremony. Dozens of Israeli backpackers are stranded in far-flung areas of the country, especially in the Gosainkunda lakes area. The Foreign Ministry says only one Israeli, Or Asraf, remains unaccounted for of the 2,000 who were in the country when the quake hit Saturday. The study, published April 10 in the Journal of Religion & Health, showed that people who believe in an angry, vengeful god are more likely to suffer from social anxiety, paranoia, obsessional thinking, and compulsions.Researchers reached this conclusion after analyzing responses of 1,426 Americans to a 2010 poll on religion. Poll respondents who indicated belief in a deity were placed in three categories -- those who believed in a punitive god, those who believed in a benevolent god, and those who believed in a deistic (uninvolved) god. Then the researchers looked at the prevalence of emotional problems in each group.What exactly did the researchers find? Lesbian teacher: How I convince kids to accept gay ‘marriage’, starting at 4-years-old

TORONTO, April 20, 2015 (LifeSiteNews.com) -- A primary grade lesbian teacher from an Ontario public school revealed in a workshop at a homosexual activist conference for teachers earlier this month how she uses her classroom to convince children as young as four to accept homosexual relationships.“And I started in Kindergarten. What a great place to start. It was where I was teaching. So, I was the most comfortable there,” Pam Strong said at the conference, attended by LifeSiteNews.The conference, hosted by the homosexual activist organization Jer’s Vision, now called the Canadian Centre for Gender and Sexual Diversity, focused on the implementation of Bill 13 in Ontario classrooms. Bill 13, called by critics the ‘homosexual bill of rights,’ passed in June 2012 and gave students the right to form pro-gay clubs in their school, including Catholic ones, using the name Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA).Strong, who is in an open relationship with another woman and who has been a teacher for about five years, focused her workshop on what she called the “power of conversation” for promoting LGBTQ issues in an elementary classroom. She began her talk by relating how she reacted the first time one of her students called another student ‘gay’ as a putdown.“With [the principal’s] encouragement, we decided that I would go from class to class and talk about what ‘gay’ means, what does ‘LGBTQ’ mean, what do ‘I’ mean,” she told about 40 attendees, all educators, at her workshop.

Strong related how she began with the junior kindergarten class.

“And I read a [pro-gay child’s] book [King and King], and I started to realize that conversations can be very difficult, and they can have the most power when they are the most difficult.”“But difficult conversations are a part of what we do as teachers, right? And when these conversations are properly supported by teachers within the safety of the classroom, they provide a rich environment for our students as they unpack these complex social issues and they reflect on their own preconceptions, rights, of gender, sexuality, love, all these different things,” she said.Strong related that as she was reading “King and King” in the junior kindergarten class as a springboard to discuss her sexuality with the kids, she got to the part where the two princes become ‘married’ when one of the boys suddenly shouted out: “They can’t do that! They can’t get married. They’re two boys.”Recounted Strong: “And I said, ‘Oh, yeah, yeah, they can. It’s right here on page 12.”To which the boy replied, according to Strong: “Oh, yeah, I know Mrs. Strong, but that’s just a story. That’s not real life.”“And I said: ‘It happens in real life too. I am married to a woman. I am gay. And I am in love with my wife.”Strong said the young children “just all kind of went silent.” She then told them: “That may seem different to you, how many of you have heard of that before?”“Not one hand went up,” she related. “And so I said: ‘That may seem different to you, but we’re not that different. Would you like to know about what I do with my family?”“Yeah, tell us,” she recounted the children enthusiastically saying.“I said, you know, we take our kids to the park. I swing them on swings,” she related, telling conference attendees that she could share things she did with her own children that “mostly likely all of their families did with them.”Then she told the children: “We laugh together. We go grocery shopping together. I read to them. I tickle them, sometimes until they scream and laugh and when they cry, I hug them until they stop.” Strong said that at that point, the boy who had used the word ‘gay’ looked and her and said: “Well, you’re a family.”“And I said, yeah, we are,” she related. “And off I go to the next classroom.”Strong said that she went from “class to class to class and continued with these conversations, and they were very powerful.”

Strong related an incident that happened last fall involving a new boy who had recently entered her grade 5 classroom. The new boy had not yet been made aware of Strong’s sexual preference for other women.“All my class is very used to who I am. My family picture is very proudly in my room now. On Mondays they quite often will say, ‘What did you do with your wife?’ It’s normal in my classroom.”Strong said that a conversation between herself and the students came up one day where it was mentioned that she was a lesbian. The new boy put his hands over his mouth and said, according to Strong: “Oh, my God, I think I’m going to puke.”“As I took the abuse — personally, as an individual – of those words, I also saw half of my class look at me with incredible concern. One student who was right in front of me already had tears in her eyes. And I noticed several other students who were looking at him. They were just very, very upset with this kid,” she related.Strong said the boy instantly became aware that “something he had said had just created this unbelievable tension in the room.” She related how she addressed the boy, telling him: “I think that what you might not be aware of is that I am gay, and I am married to a woman, and my family has two moms.’”“ His eyes just started darting around, and he was incredibly uncomfortable,” she related.“I looked at the other kids and I said: ‘Ok guys, what I want to ask you is: Am I upset with him?’ And the one little girl in my class put up her hand — that doesn’t usually get into these conversations very much in my classroom — and she said, ‘Mrs Strong, I know you’re not upset with him, because he hasn’t had the benefit of our conversations.”“And I looked at my little friend, my ‘new’ friend, and I said: ‘But, we’re going to have one now,’” she related.Strong said that she then directed her class to the board and asked them to write everything she had told them related to LGBTQ.“And my class all of a sudden popped up. ‘LGBTQ’ was on the board, ‘lesbian,’ and all the different words coming out there. Commercials are great, I use one right now, the Honey Maid commercial.” The 2014 “Dad & Papa" commercial depicts two male same-sex partners engaging with their children in normal family activities such as making s’mores, eating dinner around the table, and walking in the park.Strong says she watches the commercial with her students up to three times, asking them to make a list of all the similarities between the gay-partnership and their own families.
“Of course they think it’s going to be so different, [that] this family is going to be so different,” she said.Strong said the kids notice dozens of similarities, but usually only one difference, namely that the commercial has “two dads.” Other than this, she said the students “could not find one thing in that commercial that was different than their own families.” In this way she convinces the kids that a gay- partnership is identical to a family made up of a male and female. Strong called it a “fantastic lesson for kids of all ages.”“There was nothing left for me to teach at the end of it. It was a huge learning for some kids,” she said.

BALTIMORE (Reuters) - Baltimore residents on Tuesday began to clear the wreckage of rioting and fires that erupted after the funeral of a 25-year-old black man who died in police custody, while the city's mayor defended local law enforcement's light initial response.Acrid smoke hung over streets where violence broke out just blocks from Freddie Gray's funeral and spread through much of the poor West Baltimore neighborhood. Nineteen buildings and 144 vehicles were set on fire, and 202 people were arrested, according to the mayor's office.Police said 15 officers were injured, six seriously, in Monday's unrest, which spread throughout the city as police initially looked on but did not interfere as rioters torched vehicles and later businesses.Looters had ransacked stores, pharmacies and a shopping mall and clashed with police in riot gear in the most violent unrest in the United States since Ferguson, Missouri, was torn by gunshots and arson in late 2014.Gray's death gave new energy to the public outcry that flared last year after police killings of unarmed black men in Ferguson, New York City and elsewhere."It's a very delicate balancing act, when we have to make sure that we're managing but not increasing and escalating the problem," Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake told reporters on Tuesday.Police in Ferguson came under intense criticism last year for quickly adopting a militarized posture, using armored vehicles, showing heavy weapons and deploying tear gas in a forceful response that some said escalated tensions in the St. Louis suburb.New York's police department took a more flexible approach in protests later in the year, monitoring marches that crisscrossed the city but largely averting the kind of violence seen in Ferguson and Baltimore.For nearly a week after Gray died from a spinal injury on April 19, protests in Baltimore had been peaceful.

BALTIMORE (Reuters) - Baltimore erupted in violence on Monday as hundreds of rioters looted stores, burned buildings and at least 15 police officers were injured following the funeral of a 25-year-old black man who died after suffering a spinal injury in police custody.The riots broke out blocks from where the funeral of Freddie Gray took place and spread through much of west Baltimore.It was the most violent protest against police treatment of African Americans since arson and gunfire in Ferguson, Missouri, last year.A state of emergency was declared by Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, a Republican, who sent in the National Guard, and a curfew was imposed in the majority black city from Tuesday night, with exceptions for work and medical emergencies.Firefighters battled numerous blazes through Monday night, including one that consumed a church's senior center under construction in East Baltimore. Police said looting, fires and attacks against officers continued overnight.Looters sacked liquor stores, pharmacies, a shopping mall and a check-cashing store. Rioters smashed car windows outside a major hotel and twice slashed a fire hose while firefighters fought a blaze at a CVS pharmacy that had been looted before it was set on fire."All this had to happen, people getting tired of the police killing the young black guys for no reason. ... It is a sad day but it had to happen," said Tony Luster, 40, who was out on the street watching the police line.Gray was arrested on April 12 when running from officers. He was transported to the police station in a van, with no seat restraint, and suffered the spinal injury that led to his death a week later. A lawyer for Gray's family says his spine was 80 percent severed at the neck while in custody.Six officers have been suspended, and the U.S. Justice Department is investigating the incident for possible civil rights violations.Gray's death reignited a public outcry over police treatment of African Americans that flared last year after police killings of unarmed black men in Ferguson, New York City and elsewhere.But after several days of peaceful protests, events turned violent on Monday. Democratic Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake called the looters "thugs" and said they had nothing to do with protests.Police made at least 27 arrests and Baltimore schools will be shut Tuesday. An Orioles baseball game was canceled and businesses and train stations shut down in the city of 620,000 people 40 miles (64 km) from the nation's capital.

Much of the rioting occurred in a neighborhood where more than a third of families live in poverty. The violence appeared to catch city officials somewhat off-guard after a week of peaceful protests.After Missouri was criticized for a heavy-handed response to protests over the police killing of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown in August, cities have carefully tread a line between allowing peaceful demonstrations over police brutality and preventing violence.Answering criticism of not responding quickly enough to Monday's events, Mayor Rawlings-Blake told CNN: "This was an incident that sparked this afternoon ... I think it would have been inappropriate to bring in the National Guard when we had it under control."Gray's family pleaded for peaceful demonstrations and after the looting started, pastors and community leaders took to the streets to try to prevent violent clashes between black youth and police.Looters were nonchalant and showed their faces."We went in there and tore it up," said a 16-year-old who said he was one of the looters inside the CVS.Just down the street from the smoldering CVS, business owner Daisy Bush, 61, said: "The sad part about it is that a lot of people from the community were up there in the CVS, stealing stuff out of it. It's a disgrace."Earlier in the day youths threw rocks and bricks at police. Six officers were injured seriously, Baltimore Police Commissioner Anthony Batts told reporters."This is not protesting. This is not your first amendment rights.
