Family's lucky escape from doomed AirAsia flight QZ 8501-Date-December 29, 2014 - 12:55PM
-Michael Bachelard-Indonesia correspondent for Fairfax Media

The families that missed flight QZ8501-Two Indonesian families failed to board their AirAsia flight to Singapore for different reasons on Sunday, they now feel a mix of relief and anguish for those who boarded the plane.

Anxious wait begins as failing light halts search operation

As Christianawati raced late into Surabaya airport to catch her flight on Sunday morning, she felt like the unluckiest woman in the world. Her 10-member extended family had been keenly anticipating their holiday to Singapore. The five children were going to try out the new rides at Universal Studios, and it would be the first trip away for the babies — her little boy just seven months old, and her brother's baby, who is 11 months.Lucky escape: Christianawati, her husband Ari Putro Cahyono and their extended family after missing flight QZ8501.But they missed their plane, QZ8501, by just minutes.Christianawati's husband Ari Putro Cahyono had not checked the emails or received the phone calls from AirAsia informing him the flight would be leaving two hours earlier than the scheduled departure of 7.20am.Even so, this Indonesian family came close. Ari and his brother-in-law arrived together in the first of two cars at around 5am, just in time to see another pair of latecomers race through the departure process and make it to the boarding lounge. They could have followed if they had not been waiting for the second car, which was carrying the women and children, along with the matriarch of the clan.So they resigned themselves to their fate and began trying to negotiate a later flight with the budget carrier's ground staff. As the family argued the toss in the airport, at 5.35am, the A320 Airbus numbered QZ8501 took off. When, 37 minutes later, at 6.12am local time, the pilot asked permission to divert around a storm, the family were cooling their heels at the airport. Five minutes later, the plane lost communication with the tower and, a minute later, fell off the radar. The world now knows that grave fears are held for the safety of that flight and the 162 passengers and crew on board. But it was 9am local time before an airport official approached Christianawati and her big family and said the words she will never forget."This must have been the best Christmas gift your family ever received," she recalls him saying. "The flight you were supposed to be on has crashed."While that has still not been confirmed, the effect of this revelation on Christianawati and her family was immediate."We felt completely limp, the whole family," Christianawati told Fairfax Media, "It was like we'd lost our spirit.""I just remember those people who we saw running to the last call," says her husband, Ari. "I hope they find them. I really hope search and rescue finds them soon."Then he pauses, and finds hope for the missing in his own good fortune."It was a miracle that happened to my family, and I believe God will provide the same miracle to all the families who are waiting for their loved ones," he says firmly.

Items resembling an emergency slide, plane door and other objects were spotted during an aerial search Tuesday for missing AirAsia flight 8501, Indonesian officials said.“We spotted about 10 big objects and many more small white-colored objects which we could not photograph,” Indonesian air force official Agus Dwi Putranto told a press conference. This aerial view taken from an Indonesian search and rescue aircraft over the Java Sea shows floating debris spotted in the search area. (AFP)-“The position is 10 kilometers from the location the plane was last captured by radar,” he said.More floating debris spotted in the search area. (AFP)-He displayed 10 photos of objects resembling a plane door, emergency slide, and a square box-like object. An AFP photographer on the same flight that spotted the debris said he had seen objects in the sea resembling a life raft, life jackets and long orange tubes. At least 30 ships, 15 aircraft and seven helicopters were looking for the jet carrying 162 people, said Indonesia's Search and Rescue Agency chief Henry Bambang Soelistyo. Most of the craft were Indonesian but Singapore, Malaysia and Australia contributed to the effort. Aircraft from Thailand planned to join Tuesday's search.Relatives of passengers onboard AirAsia flight QZ8501 cry in a waiting area at Juanda International Airport in Surabaya December 29, 2014. (Reuters)-The U.S. Navy  is also joining the search. It said in a statement that the USS Sampson, a destroyer, which was already on an independent deployment in the Western Pacific, and will arrive in the area later Tuesday. China announced that a navy frigate already on patrol in the South China Sea and aircraft to help the search.Pilot of Navy airplane CN235 M. Naim holds a map to co-pilot Rahmad while flying over the Java sea during joint search operations. (Reuters)-Australia said Tuesday it was sending two more Orion aircraft to join the search, bringing Australia's total contribution to three Orions.Australia is leading the ongoing search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 which disappeared in March, triggering many false reports and rumors, and Foreign Minister Julie Bishop cautioned on speculation surrounding the AirAsia flight."There will be many reports over the next little while as the search and rescue operation gets under way and continues, but until such time as we have actual verification, I'm not going to speculate on these issues," she said. The AirAsia pilots had been worried about the weather and had sought permission to climb above threatening clouds. Air traffic control couldn't say yes immediately - there was no room. Six other airliners were crowding the airspace, forcing Flight 8501 to remain at a lower altitude.A member of the Indonesian military looks out of the window during a search and rescue (SAR) operation for missing Malaysian air carrier AirAsia flight QZ8501. (AFP)-Minutes later, the jet was gone from the radar without issuing a distress signal. The plane is believed to have crashed into Indonesia's Java Sea, but broad aerial surveys so far have turned up no firm evidence of the missing Airbus A320-200.On Monday, searchers spotted two oily patches and floating objects in separate locations, but it was not known any of it was related to the plane that vanished Sunday halfway into what should have been a two-hour hop from Surabaya, Indonesia, to Singapore. The area is a busy shipping lane. Officials saw little reason to believe the flight met anything but a grim fate.Based on the plane's last known coordinates, the aircraft probably crashed into the water and "is at the bottom of the sea," Bambang Soelistyo said Monday. Still, searchers planned to expand their efforts onto land on Tuesday.A storm alone isn't going to bring down a modern plane designed to withstand severe weather. But weather paired with a pilot error or a mechanical failure could be disastrous.Pilots rely on sophisticated weather-radar systems that include a dashboard display of storms and clouds, as well as reports from other crews, to steer around dangerous weather."A lot more information is available to pilots in the cockpit about weather than it ever was," said Deborah Hersman, former chairman of the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board. But the technology has limits and sometimes information about storms "can be a little bit stale."Jakarta's air force base commander, Rear Marshal Dwi Putranto, said an Australian Orion aircraft had detected "suspicious" objects near an island about 100 miles (160 kilometers) off central Kalimantan. That's about 700 miles (1,120 kilometers) from where the plane lost contact, but within Monday's greatly expanded search area."However, we cannot be sure whether it is part of the missing AirAsia plane," Putranto said.An Associated Press photographer flew in a C-130 transport carrier with Indonesia's Air Force for 10 hours Monday over a large section of the search area between Kalimantan and Belitung. The flight was bumpy and rainy at times. It flew low, easily spotting waves, ships and fishermen, but there was no sign of the plane.Authorities monitor progress in the search for AirAsia Flight QZ8501 in the Mission Control Center inside the National Search and Rescue Agency in Jakarta December 29, 2014. (Reuters)-Nearly all the passengers and crew are Indonesians, who are frequent visitors to Singapore, particularly on holidays.Ruth Natalia Puspitasari, who would have turned 26 on Monday, was among them. Her father, Suyanto, sat with his wife, who was puffy-eyed and coughing, near the family crisis center at Surabaya's airport."I don't want to experience the same thing with what was happened with Malaysia Airlines," he said as his wife wept. "It could be a long suffering."Few believe this search will be as perplexing as the ongoing one for Flight 370, where what happened onboard remains a total mystery. Authorities suspect the plane was deliberately diverted by someone on board and ultimately lost in a remote area of the Indian Ocean. Flight 8501 vanished over a heavily traveled sea that is relatively shallow, with no sign of foul play. The captain, Iryanto, who like many Indonesians uses a single name, had more than 20,000 flying hours, AirAsia said.People who knew Iryanto recalled that he was an experienced military pilot, flying F-16 fighters before shifting to commercial aviation. His French co-pilot, Remi Plesel, had been in Indonesia three years and loved to fly, his sister, Renee, told France's RTL radio."He told me that things were going well, that he'd had a good Christmas. He was happy. The rains were starting," she said. "The weather was bad."(With AFP and the Associated Press)-Last Update: Tuesday, 30 December 2014 KSA 09:05 - GMT 06:05

PA Toughens Language in Unilateral UN Resolution-Palestinian Authority presents a more toughly-worded UN draft resolution on statehood, but a date on the vote is yet to be determined.By Elad Benari-First Publish: 12/30/2014, 12:13 AM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

The Palestinian Authority’s envoys presented on Monday a more toughly-worded United Nations (UN) draft resolution on statehood that could come up for a vote at the Security Council this week, AFP reports.Arab ambassadors met at UN headquarters for about two hours to endorse the text that contains new provisions on declaring eastern Jerusalem the capital of a Palestinian state, settling the issue of prisoner releases and halting Israeli construction in Judea, Samaria and Jerusalem. But a final decision on the timing for a vote on the draft resolution at the Security Council rests with PA and Jordanian leaders."Both our leaderships will be discussing, to find the best way and the best timing to vote on the Security Council resolution," Jordanian Ambassador Dina Kawar was quoted as having told reporters."Realistically, it could happen tomorrow," added PA envoy Riyad Mansour. The draft resolution was formally presented to the council on December 17, but the United States quickly rejected the text over Palestinian insistence that deadlines be set.The PA said it was open to negotiations on the text and Jordan began talks on a measure that could garner a consensus among the 15 council members. But the latest push showed that prospects for a resolution that would satisfy both the PA and the United States were bleak.Discussions on the draft resolution come amid mounting international alarm over the ongoing violence and the failure to re-start negotiations. It remains unclear if the PA would seek a quick vote or hold off until January 1 when five new members with a pro-Palestinian stance join  the Security Council.Diplomats said it was unlikely that the resolution would garner nine votes under the current makeup of the council -- a scenario that would allow the United States to avoid resorting to its veto power.Angola, Malaysia, New Zealand, Spain and Venezuela begin their two-year stint at the council on January 1, replacing Argentina, Australia, Luxembourg, Rwanda and South Korea.Russia has said it will support the resolution, and while U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has not publicly stated that Washington would use its veto against the resolution, his spokeswoman recently said the United States will not support the resolution.Meanwhile, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu on Monday called on the international community to oppose the PA’s moves at the UN."We expect the international community, at least the responsible members of that community to oppose vigorously this UN diktat, this UN Security Council resolution because what we need always is direct negotiations and not imposed conditions," Netanyahu said during a meeting with Indiana Governor Mike Pence."But I want to guarantee you, to you and to the people of Israel: If the international community does not reject the Palestinian Authority's proposal, we will. Israel will oppose conditions that endanger our future," he added.

PA, Arab Council Weigh Deadline for UN Draft Resolution-Reports differing on when the draft will be presented to the UN, as Jordan vows to push ahead - despite PA hesitancy.By Arutz Sheva Staff-First Publish: 12/29/2014, 8:29 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

Palestinian Authority (PA) envoys are pressing on with changes to a draft UN resolution on statehood Monday, meeting with Arab countries to decide when the text should be put to a vote at the Security Council, according to AFP.Security Council member Jordan called the meeting of the Arab Group at the United Nations to discuss the new draft that lays out a time frame to reach a final peace deal with Israel."We want to discuss with the Arab Group the amendments that the Palestinians are proposing to the resolution ... and to see when is a good time to pass to a vote," Jordanian Ambassador Dina Kawar told reporters. The draft resolution was formally presented to the council less than two weeks ago but the United States said it would not support the text. The resolution sets a 12-month deadline to wrap up negotiations on a final settlement and calls for Israel to complete a withdrawal from Judea-Samaria by the end of 2017. The deal would pave the way for the creation of a Palestinian state with Israel sharing Jerusalem as its capital, according to the text.Arab ambassadors were to decide on whether to seek a vote at the Security Council this week, possibly as early as Tuesday, Jordanian and Palestinian diplomats said. But with five new members who have a pro-Palestinian stance joining the Security Council on January 1, the ambassadors may decide to hold off on a vote until next month.Israel has strongly opposed the text, and Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu stated earlier Monday that it jeopardizes Israel's existence."Israel and our civilization is under attack," Netanyahu stated. "The attacks come from Iran; the attacks come from the various Islamists. The attack is now coming on Israel from the Palestinian Authority seeking to impose on us a diktat that would undermine Israel's security, and put its future in peril."

Netanyahu Calls on States to Oppose PA's 'Diktats' at the UN-Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu says PA statehood bid 'puts Israel's future in peril' in meeting with Indiana governor.By Tova Dvorin-First Publish: 12/29/2014, 6:08 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu met with Indiana Governor Mike Pence on Monday, noting at the beginning of the meeting that Israel is "under attack" by Islamists and that Israel will reject a bid for Palestinian statehood."Israel and our civilization is under attack," Netanyahu stated. "The attacks come from Iran; the attacks come from the various Islamists. The attack is now coming on Israel from the Palestinian Authority seeking to impose on us a diktat that would undermine Israel's security, put its future in peril.""We expect the international community, at least the responsible members of that community to oppose vigorously this UN diktat, this UN Security Council resolution because what we need always is direct negotiations and not imposed conditions," he continued. "But I want to guarantee you, to you and to the people of Israel: If the international community does not reject the Palestinian Authority's proposal, we will. Israel will oppose conditions that endanger our future."Netanyahu's words reiterate Israel's opposition to a PA statehood bid being circulated throughout the UN, which calls for Israel to withdraw from Judea and Samaria by 2017 to establish 'Palestine.' Pence is in Israel for a Christmas vacation trip, where he is meeting with several government authorities and local leaders as well in an effort to expand the economic cooperation between Indiana and the Jewish state. The governor made headlines Sunday for rejecting an offer to have Christmas dinner with Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, after Abbas approached him last week with the offer to have a car bring him to a "unscheduled and unsolicited meeting."Pence has stressed on multiple occasions that he supports Israel, making remarks to the Christian Broadcasting Network condemning current US President Barack Obama's policy on Israel and Jerusalem in 2010.But despite this, Pence stated Monday at the meeting that "right now, the United States' support for Israel has never been stronger.""The strong and broad bipartisan support for the State of Israel I know will be reflected in decisions that our Congress makes in the months ahead, to preserve the support the United States provides for Israel, to ensure that Israel is able to enter into negotiations, to achieve defensible borders, and secure its own peace," he added.

UPDATE-DEC 29,10-00:15PM
SAR received information on smoke cloud originating from Pulau Long, still under investigation. The search team are going to check the area tomorrow.WE WILL SEE IF THIS SMOKE IS THE MISSING PLANE.WE MIGHT HAVE THIS MYSTERY SOLVED.WE WILL SEE AS THEY INVESTIGATE THE SITE.About 100 next-of-kin of those on board QZ8501 are expected to turn up at the crisis centre in Surabaya, reports Channel 8 News, adding that Singapore Jakarta and Surabaya are preparing to hold a video conference for the missing plane.Multiple unconfirmed reports of smoke in #QZ8501 search area. Caveat: burning forests for paper production is common this time of year.Singapore has searched a third of allocated area. Singapore has been given a search zone in the Java Sea of 60 nautical miles by 190 nautical miles, an area about 55 times larger than Singapore. With the missing flight QZ8501, families need evidence and answers, not speculation.

AirAsia flight QZ8501: extended search resumes amid fading hopes-The Australian-December 30, 2014 1:22PM

1.16pm: The US State Department has confirmed it is sending a Destroyer to the Java Sea, to help in the search for AirAsia flight QZ 8501. Equipment on the ship may include detection equipment deployed by air, surface and sub-surface.

12.06am: Smoke has been reportedly seen on an island in the area where AirAsia flight QZ8501 disappeared from the radar. CNN is reporting that planes have been diverted to check the source of the smoke.

11.28am: Dozens of planes and ships searching Indonesian waters for missing AirAsia flight 8501 are focusing on a patch of oil for possible clues of the plane’s whereabouts.

Australia, Malaysia and Singapore have joined the Indonesia-led search, and China says it is also sending help. The search is now concentrated on an oil patch spotted off Belitung island, across from Kalimantan on Borneo island.“We are making sure whether it was avtur (aviation fuel) from the AirAsia plane or from a vessel because that location is a shipping line,” Indonesian Air Force spokesman Hadi Tjahjanto said. National Search and Rescue Agency chief Bambang Soelistyo said ships and aircraft were searching an area where the sea is 40-50 metres deep.

10:50am: The daughter of the AirAsia pilot Irianto has begged: “Papa come home, I still need Papa.” Mr Irianto’s daughter Angela used local social media for her grief stricken plea.In the French Caribbean island of Martinique, the mother of co-pilot Remi Emmanuel Plesel said she was heartbroken and that she had “a bad feeling” when the phone rang in the middle of the night. “He wanted to be a pilot ever since he was a child,” Rolande Plesel said.

9.53am: It has emerged that, while AirAsia was upgrading its satellite tracking system, the missing AirAsia flight QZ8501 had not yet been modifed. Read the full story here:AirAsia plane’s tracker not upgraded

9.26am: Some passengers had a narrow escape when they failed to board the missing AirAsia plane after missing an email telling them the departure time had changed: Late AirAsia passengers had lucky escape

8.08am: Reports of debris and an oil slick spotted in the Java Sea have been discounted by Indonesian officials. Indonesia Vice-President Jusuf Kalla told reporters of the debris: “It has been checked and no sufficient evidence was found to confirm what was reported.”

7.52am: It looks increasingly likely that the missing AirAsia flight QZ8501 encountered atrocious weather before disappearing from the radar. The region it was flying over is known for severe thunder storms in December and January, which produce heavy turbulence, lightning, wind shear and iceing - all of which pose risks to aircraft.Indonesia’s weather agency said it had informed airlines of cumulonimbus clouds, which can cause severe thunder storms, in the region before AirAsia’s departure.

7.36am: An Indonesian university student studying in Melbourne is believed to be among the passengers on the missing AirAsia plane.Kevin Alexander Soetjipto from Malang in East Java was studying finance at Monash University’s Clayton campus, according to his LinkedIn profile. He was due to graduate next year.Kevin Alexander Soetjipto, a student at the Clayton campus of Monash University was on the plane. Picture: Facebook.Mr Soetjipto was travelling with his family from Surabaya to Singapore.Monash spokeswoman Stacey Mair said the university was still seeking official confirmation from authorities that one of its students was onboard.“We are deeply saddened to learn this news in relation to one of our valued student community,” she told AAP.The university would be offering counselling support to Mr Soetjipto’s friends and classmates. She said thoughts and prayers were with all the families of those onboard.Mr Soetjipto’s name is published in Indonesian media on the AirAsia flight QZ8501 passenger list.

7.35am: There is some frustration among passengers about the amount of information they are getting from officials. One relative told CNN that they were getting more information from media than from official sources.AirAsia Group CEO Tony Fernandes (L) and Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla (R) at a press conference at Juanda International Airport. 7.33am: The sister of Remi Plesel, the French copilot of missing AirAsia flight QZ8501 has paid tribute to an “excellent” pilot who had dreamed of flying as a boy.Aviation was his passion, his sister Renee told French radio station RTL.“Since he was very young, it was his dream to be a pilot and the dream came true. He had been in Indonesia for three years ... He was a very good pilot, an excellent one,” she said.

7.30am: Ships and planes will today resume an extended search for AirAsia flight QZ8501, which has been missing since Sunday morning. The search covers an area the size of California but there is little hope that they will find survivors.Indonesian naval officers prepare the operational air navigation map during the investiga.Indonesian naval officers prepare the operational air navigation map during the investigation of missing AirAsia flight QZ8501.It has emerged that the pilot’s request to increase altitude to avoid a storm system was denied because there was traffic overhead. Radar contact was lost about six minutes later. Developments in AirAsia tragedy.Flying safer despite year’s toll. The US State Department has said Indonesia has asked for help and Washington was considering ways in which it could help. UPDATE-DEC 29,14-02:15PM
15 SHIPS AND 30 PLANES HAVE BEEN SCOURING THE SOUTH BORNEO-JAVA AREA.AND THE AREA EXPANDS TONIGHT AFTER 6PM WHEN ITS 6AM IN INDONESIA AREA.It is 1:23 AM local time in Belitung (GMT +7). Most likely there wont' be anything important happening until the day break when the search operation resume. Come back in 5 hours.Metro TV interview a local ship captain who claimed that he noticed a red plane flying low yesterday at 00' 17' 202 S dan 105' 40' 422 E.According to the Guardian ≥ Air traffic controllers cited a crowded airspace as the reason they denied AirAsia 8501 its request to increase its altitude minutes before the plane disappeared, AP reports.Six other commercial airliners were flying above the threatening Cumulonimbus clouds, controllers said, delaying the approval. More from AP:Minutes later, the jet carrying 162 people was gone from the radar. No distress signal was issued. It is believed to have crashed into Indonesia’s Java Sea on Sunday morning, but exactly what happened and whether the plane’s flight path played any role won’t be determined until after the aircraft is found.Broad aerial surveys on Monday spotted two oily patches and objects in separate locations, but it’s unknown whether any of it is related to the missing Airbus A320-200.The last communication from the cockpit to air traffic control was a request by one of the pilots to increase altitude from 32,000ft (9,754m) to 38,000ft (11,582m) because of the rough weather. The tower was not able to immediately comply because of the other planes, said Bambang Tjahjono, director of the state-owned company in charge of air-traffic control.AP spoke with a former pilot, Sarjono Joni, who’s familiar with Indonesian flight plans and weather. Sarjono said planes usually veer left or right when they encounter rough weather, and that pilots would only likely request to increase altitude if the plane was already experiencing heavy turbulence.Heavy air traffic is common for the area, which bridges several densely populated cities.According to Channel News Asia.An object spotted in the Java Sea early Monday was actually a personal locator beacon worn by rescuers, The Star quoted the chief of BASARNAS as saying.Mr Bambang Soelistyo also said search operations for QZ8501 will extend to land on the western part of West Kalimantan on Tuesday, The Star reports.

As AirAsia search ends second day, families can only wait-By Devianti Faridz, Indonesia correspondent,Channel NewsAsia-POSTED: 29 Dec 2014 20:14-UPDATED: 29 Dec 2014 22:52

SURABAYA, Indonesia: Family members gathered and hugged and cried at the international airport here as they anxiously awaited news on the fate of passengers aboard AirAsia Flight QZ8501 as a second day of an intense multi-nation search for the plane headed into dusk.Authorities had little new to report and little evidence on why the jet lost contact en route from Surabaya to Singapore shortly after the pilot requested permission to head to a higher altitude in the face of a storm, Channel NewsAsia reports. The inability to immediately find the plane has brought back echoes of the ordeal of Malaysian Airlines Flight MH370 and questions of how what appeared to be a routine flight could go so wrong."I found out from television yesterday morning, and I found the names there in the list and so I was shocked and was not sure the first time," said one anxious family member waiting for any information.Another family member said that more detail was needed. "Regardless of the fact that this is a tragedy, questions emerge on why the flight was moved up from 7.30am to 5.20am that day,” the second person said. “I believe many families would like to know the reason. If they hadn't left earlier, this may not have happened."The head of the aviation authority at Surabaya’s Juanda International Airport, Pramintohadi Sukarno, said that the investigation would be thorough from his end."We follow the regulations starting from the investigation on the possibility of the performance of the aircraft. On the other hand, we have to check all the procedures whether they comply or not with the civil aviation security part of ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) regulations."But until authorities find evidence of the whereabouts of the missing plane, distraught families and friends of those on board have little choice but to wait for the next briefing and hope their loved ones will be found.AirAsia has provided free accommodation and transport to and from the airport for family members and Surabaya City officials have set up a call centre and offered assistance to locate next-of-kin and to provide counselling."We have begun safeguarding some houses in which entire families had left empty to go on a vacation,” said Tri Rismaharini, the mayor of Surabaya. “I'm working with local police and neighbourhood officials to help keep an eye on the houses."- CNA/el

Did Mysterious Chinese Blogger Predict Disappearance of AirAsia Flight?-Weibo user warned travelers to avoid AirAsia in series of posts-by Paul Joseph Watson | December 29, 2014

A mysterious user of the Chinese social media network Weibo apparently predicted the disappearance on AirAsia Flight QZ8501 almost two weeks before the plane went missing, urgently warning Chinese nationals not to use the airliner in dozens of posts. The report, carried by the Epoch Times, relates the story of how the individual “repeatedly warned people away from Malaysia Airlines (and) AirAsia.”“Do not become another victim of MH370,” warned the individual in a December 15 post, adding that AirAsia was about to be targeted by “powerful” forces which he referred to as the “black hand”.“This is a life-saving message to Europe or the US tour, do not take AirAsia (or) Malaysia Airlines airliner,” states the translated version of one of the posts. The user went on to assert that the “black hand” was out to “ruin AirAsia,” Malaysia’s second largest airline company. Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 went missing in March earlier this year, while MH17 was shot down over Ukraine in July. The individual repeated his warning in subsequent posts made on the 16th and 17th of December, writing, “This is a major event in human life, we have to pay attention,” adding, “far from AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines away, cherish life.”Speculation on the Reddit forum by Chinese users suggests that the posts may have originally been made on the 15th but then later edited with the prediction about AirAsia added after the disappearance of Flight QZ8501.The user made a total of 39 posts on the subject which were viewed by 650,000 people. After flight QZ8501 disappeared, users returned to the threads to express amazement at the individual’s prediction, speculating that he was an “insider” of some kind or connected to the Malaysian or Chinese government.Investigators are still hunting for the wreckage of the AirAsia flight, which had 162 passengers on board when it disappeared during a flight from Surabaya to Singapore, with the head of Indonesia’s search-and-rescue team asserting that the plane is likely to be at the bottom of the sea.No Chinese nationals were on Flight QZ8501 when it went missing.A separate report carried by Russian news outlet Sputnik claims that “a relative of a missing passenger received a text message from an unknown sender, stating that the plane made an emergency landing and all passengers were alive,” although this was never subsequently confirmed.Unidentified objects discovered in the Java Sea by an Australian AP-3C Orion patrol aircraft are not likely to be wreckage from the AirAsia Flight.Facebook @ https://www.facebook.com/paul.j.watson.71

MH370: B777 captain says he knows where it is!-Geoffrey Thomas AirlineRatings.com
24 Dec 2014-Experienced Boeing 777 says he has calculated where MH370 lies.airlineratings.com

A senior Boeing 777 captain, Simon Hardy, believes he has calculated exactly where the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 may have crashed into the Southern Indian Ocean. The position is S38.082 E87.400 (latitude and longitude using decimals rather than minutes).According to David Learmount of FlightGlobal arguably the world’s most respected airline safety editor the location given by the experienced captain “is not fundamentally at odds with the present MH370 search assumptions, being in much the same part of the southeastern Indian Ocean.”

Malaysia rejects evidence

However Mr Learmount adds that it is “just outside the core target area currently being trawled by a search team led by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB).”Capt Simon Hardy’s calculations are based on a combination of data which include the Inmarsat satellite communication "handshake arcs", his expertise in 777 performance calculation, and some mathematical "reverse engineering" of the navigation geometry known to apply to this flight.“Hardy is aware that many very able people have theories about MH370, not least those advising the search, but believes the result of his calculations is worthy of examination, and hopes the ATSB will find the result useful,” said Mr Learmount."I respectfully recommend it to the MH370 search team," Hardy told FlightGlobal.Captain Hardy is an experienced airline pilot and currently works as a senior 777 captain for a major international airline. “Like other aviators he was distressed by the MH370 loss, and his concern that relatives of those on board might never know what happened inspired him to begin a geometric investigation of known MH370 navigational facts. He emerged with a set of conclusions that enabled him to isolate what he believes to be MH370’s actual track,” said Mr Learmount. He explained his rationale and how the result emerged to FlightGlobal thus: "Rather than picking speeds and a route at random and making them fit with the [satcom handshake] arcs, I have managed to let the arcs tell us both the speed and direction, and finally a location – the exact track between arcs 4 and 6 – where it was doing that speed and heading. I have 'reverse engineered' it."He continues: "I was expecting to have to deduce a path from waypoint ANOKO [where Hardy calculates the 777 first turned southward] for the aircraft to get to this identified track across arcs 4-6, but then found to my amazement that the track line, when extended north from the 5th arc over a very large distance, went within 2nm of ANOKO. This was the final and strongest eureka moment!"Mr Learmount adds: “The "reverse engineering" involved testing a series of plausible tracks southward over the Indian Ocean from the 777's last known position, and discovering the only trajectory that – uniquely – matches the ratio of actual elapsed times between the consecutive Inmarsat/MH370 "handshakes". He then found, subsequently, that certain known data, when tested against that navigational trajectory, made sense. For example, on that identified track, the actual elapsed time between "handshake arcs" would occur if the 777 was flying at its long-range cruise speed – possibly a coincidence, but a likely choice by the person directing the flight. The ATSB told AirlineRatings.com that while they had not yet seen Captain Hardy's report they "remained confident in their analysis and will continue the search in the high priority areas we have determined."

Indonesia says missing AirAsia plane could be at 'bottom of sea'-Reuters-By Fergus Jensen and Siva Govindasamy-DEC 29,14-YAHOONEWS

JAKARTA (Reuters) - A missing AirAsia jet carrying 162 people could be at the bottom of the sea after it was presumed to have crashed off the Indonesian coast, an official said on Monday, as countries around Asia sent ships and planes to help in the search effort. The Indonesia AirAsia plane, an Airbus A320-200, disappeared after its pilot failed to get permission to fly higher to avoid bad weather during a flight from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore on Sunday.Flight QZ8501 did not issue a distress signal and disappeared over the Java Sea five minutes after requesting the change of course, which was refused because of heavy air traffic, officials said."Based on our coordinates, we expect it is in the sea, so for now (we think) it is on the sea floor," Soelistyo, head of Indonesia's search and rescue agency, told reporters when asked about the missing plane's likely location.A senior Indonesian civil aviation source told Reuters that authorities had the flight's radar data and were waiting for search and rescue teams to find debris before they started their investigation into the cause.Air force spokesman Hadi Tjahjanto said searchers were checking a report of an oil slick off the east coast of Belitung island, near where the plane lost contact. He also said searchers had picked up an emergency locator signal off the south of Borneo island but had been unable to pinpoint it.On board Flight QZ8501 were 155 Indonesians, three South Koreans, and one person each from Singapore, Malaysia and Britain. The co-pilot was French. The disappearance caps a disastrous year for Malaysia-affiliated airlines, with Indonesia AirAsia 49 percent owned by Malaysia-based budget carrier AirAsia.Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 went missing on March 8 on a trip from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 passengers and crew and has not been found. On July 17, the same airline's Flight MH17 was shot down over Ukraine, killing all 298 people on board. The AirAsia group, including affiliates in Thailand, the Philippines and India, had not suffered a crash since its Malaysian budget operations began in 2002. The group's shares in Kuala Lumpur were down 8 percent at 0813 GMT.

MULTINATIONAL SEARCH

Tjahjanto said two C-130 Hercules planes were focusing the search for Flight QZ8501 in areas northeast of Indonesia's Bangka island, about halfway between Surabaya and Singapore, in the Java Sea.Australia, Malaysia, Singapore and South Korea sent ships and aircraft to join the search, a foreign ministry official said. China also offered to send planes and ships and any other assistance Indonesia needed.Soelistyo said Indonesia might not have the best technology to search underwater and had accepted offers of help from the United States, Britain and France. In 2007, it took Indonesia months to recover flight data recorders from a Boeing 737-400 operated by Indonesia's Adam Air which crashed off Sulawesi island, killing all 102 people on board.According to Indonesian navy Flight Commander Laksamana Pertama Sigit Setiyanta, the sea depths in the area is only 25 to 50 meters (75-150 feet).Flight QZ8501 was traveling at 32,000 feet (9,753 meters) and had asked to fly at 38,000 feet to avoid clouds, said Joko Muryo Atmodjo, air transportation director at Indonesia's Transport Ministry.Permission was not given at the time due to traffic in the area. Five minutes later, at 6.17 a.m. on Sunday (2317 GMT Saturday), the plane lost contact with air traffic control, Atmodjo said.Data from Flightradar24.com, which tracks airline flights in real time, showed several nearby aircraft were at altitudes ranging from 34,000 to 36,000 feet at the time, levels that are not unusual for cruising aircraft.Pilots and aviation experts said thunderstorms, and requests to gain altitude to avoid them, were not unusual in that area."The airplane's performance is directly related to the temperature outside and increasing altitude can lead to freezing of the static radar, giving pilots an erroneous radar reading," said a Qantas Airways pilot with 25 years' experience flying in the region. The resulting danger is that pilots take incorrect action to control the aircraft, said the pilot, who requested anonymity. In such an emergency the pilots would likely have been wrestling to regain control of the aircraft and not had time to issue a distress signal, the Qantas pilot said.Online discussions among pilots centered on unconfirmed secondary radar data from Malaysia that suggested the missing plane was climbing at a speed of 353 knots, about 100 knots too slow in such weather conditions."At that altitude, that speed is exceedingly dangerous," Sydney-based aviation expert Geoff Thomas told Reuters."At that altitude, the thin air, the wings won't support the aircraft at that speed and you get an aerodynamic stall."Safety authorities say accidents involving a loss of control, such as might occur in bad weather, are rare but almost always catastrophic.

"MY HEART BLEEDS"

The Indonesian pilot was experienced and the plane last underwent maintenance in mid-November, the airline said. The aircraft had accumulated about 23,000 flight hours in some 13,600 flights, according to Airbus.Malaysia AirAsia chief Tony Fernandes flew to Surabaya and, along with Indonesian officials, updated distraught relatives of passengers at a crisis center at the airport in Indonesia's second-largest city."Keeping positive and staying strong," he said on Twitter."My heart bleeds for all the relatives of my crew and our passengers. Nothing is more important to us," he said.Indonesia's Transport Ministry said the government would review AirAsia's Indonesian business unit to improve safety.Indonesian President Joko Widodo urged people to pray for the safety of the passengers and crew. Such sentiments were echoed by other world leaders, including Pope Francis.Louise Sidharta was at Singapore's Changi Airport waiting for her fiancée to return from a family holiday."It was supposed to be their last vacation before we got married," she said.(Additional reporting by Gayatri Suroyo in SURABAYA, Chris Nusatya, Cindy Silviana, Kanupriya Kapoor, Michael Taylor and Siva Govindasamy in JAKARTA, Al-Zaquan Amer Hamzah and Praveen Menon in KUALA LUMPUR, Saeed Azhar, Rujun Shen and Anshuman Daga in SINGAPORE, Jane Wardell in SYDNEY, Ben Blanchard in BEIJING, and Tim Hepher in PARIS; Writing by Dean Yates and Paul Tait; Editing by Robert Birsel and Nick Macfie)

AirAsia flight QZ8501: Plane likely at bottom of the sea, says Indonesia's search chief-Published on Dec 29, 2014 10:30 AM-THE STRAITS TIMES

JAKARTA (AFP) - The AirAsia plane that went missing with 162 people on board en route for Singapore is likely at the bottom of the sea, Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency chief said on Monday.“Based on the coordinates given to us and evaluation that the estimated crash position is in the sea, the hypothesis is the plane is at the bottom of the sea,” Mr Bambang Soelistyo told a press conference.“That’s the preliminary suspicion and it can develop based on the evaluation of the result of our search.”Mr Soelistyo said Indonesia did not have “the tools", such as submersible vehicles, required to retrieve the plane from the seabed, but that it is reaching out to other countries for help if necessary.“Due to the lack of technology that we have, I have coordinated with our foreign minister so we will borrow from other countries which have offered. They are the UK, France and US,” he said. The Airbus A320-200 disappeared on Sunday en route from Surabaya in Indonesia’s east Java to Singapore after the crew requested a change of flight plan due to stormy weather, in the third crisis for a Malaysian carrier this year.Singapore, Malaysia and Australia have dispatched aircraft and ships to assist Indonesia in the search, which is centred on the Java Sea. The United States has also said it was ready to assist.

Lapid: We Won't Split Jerusalem-Yesh Atid chairman vows his party would never split Jerusalem, and also launches a tirade against PM Netanyahu and his lack of diplomacy.By Elad Benari-First Publish: 12/28/2014, 5:01 AM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

Yesh Atid chairman, MK Yair Lapid, on Saturday vowed that his party would never split Jerusalem, even at the expense of an agreement with the Palestinian Authority (PA).Speaking at an event in Holon, Lapid also launched a verbal tirade against Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and his lack of diplomatic action following Operation Protective Edge in Gaza last summer."We will not split the capital, even at the cost of a diplomatic settlement," Lapid said, but added, "However it is possible to reach an agreement, with the help of regional dialogue and preservation of the status quo."The issue of keeping Jerusalem under Israeli sovereignty has been mentioned several times in the past week, starting with Labor leader MK Yitzhak Herzog and Hatnua chairwoman MK Tzipi Livni, who vowed that they will keep the Western Wall under Israeli sovereignty. This was followed by comments from Netanyahu, who dismissed Herzog and Livni’s comments. In his remarks on Saturday, Lapid also attacked the government’s conduct after Operation Protective Edge, arguing that Israel should have resumed peace talks and launched discussions with the countries that participated in the Gaza rehabilitation conference in Cairo."There was no real diplomatic effort after Protective Edge. This is wrong and cowardly. If you do not do anything, why are you in power?” Lapid charged, adding, "Hamas is not a partner for talks, it is a terrorist organization. I would have acted for the demilitarization of Gaza with those who contributed to the money to rebuild Gaza.”He further warned that if Netanyahu is re-elected, he will move Israel backwards instead of forward."Before we came there were 39 ministers in the Cabinet, of them three ministers without portfolio. We stopped that. This government had 21 ministers and no ministers without portfolio," Lapid said, adding that if Netanyahu is once again Prime Minister, he would “ruin everything we achieved. He will return the Cabinet to having 30 ministers, will eliminate the winter clock, will cancel equal burden, eliminate the national program for Holocaust survivors. We will not allow him to eliminate everything we worked for."Lapid also made clear in his remarks that he was not opposed to forming a coalition with the hareidi parties after the elections, in sharp contrast to his stance after the 2013 elections when he made a pact with the Jewish Home that was meant to leave the hareidim out of the coalition."After the new draft law passed as well as the agreement to have yeshivot study secular subjects, I have no problem to sit in the same government with the hareidim,” he said, in remarks that follow recent reports that he tried to form an alternate government with the hareidim in order to unseat Netanyahu while avoiding elections.Responding on Saturday night to Lapid’s remarks, the Likud party dismissed them and described the former Finance Minister as “frustrated and frightened”.“Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu led Operation Protective Edge firmly and strongly, but also in a responsible and discretionary manner. The main considerations that stood before him were completing the objectives and tasks assigned to the army, including the destruction of the terrorist tunnels and severely harming the infrastructure of Hamas, while maintaining the security of Israeli citizens and the lives of IDF soldiers in combat situations," the Likud said."Israeli citizens know that these are the real facts and that the security challenges facing Israel are enormous and require an experienced, responsible and determined leadership. All the rest is nonsense coming from a failed, frustrated and frightened politician, who supported the Prime Minister’s firm and level-headed policy during the operation,” it added.

Netanyahu: What is the United Nations Doing?-At Cabinet meeting, PM addresses Iranian and PA threat to Israel while criticizing the UN for its hypocrisy and double standard in response.By Cynthia Blank-First Publish: 12/28/2014, 1:09 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

At the start of the Cabinet meeting Sunday, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu addressed the dual threat Iran and the Palestinian Authority pose to Israel's security."In recent weeks we have seen a stepped-up Iranian effort to intensify terrorist actions in Judea and Samaria," Netanyahu stated."None other than the Palestinian Authority ambassador in Tehran said that he was enthused by Iranian ruler Khamenei's instructions to send weapons to the 'West Bank' and he added, and I quote, 'The Zionist regime is an aggressive cancerous growth which, sooner or later, must be eliminated.'""Now I emphasize, it was not a Hamas man who said this, it was the Palestinian Authority ambassador in Tehran," Netanyahu noted. The Iranian Tasnim News Agency reported Wednesday that Khamenei's representative, Hojjatoleslam Ali Shirazi had stated, “If there is a need to have our military power available in the West Bank (Judea-Samaria - ed.), we will provide that support." "However," Shirazi added, "that move will not mean our physical presence (in Judea-Samaria)."Iran's Supreme leader has suggested since July that "armed resistance is the only way to confront the destructive regime” of Israel. The Prime Minister then went on to attack the United Nations for its incompetence in dealing with Palestinian incitement against Israel and the double standard the Human Rights Council holds Israel to."Now what is the UN doing in response?" Netanyahu asked."Instead of dealing with this incitement they are giving it an honored place, the same incitement that has led to the recent terrorist attack, and they are also moving forward on a unilateral Palestinian proposal to try and pass a decision in the Security Council, the purpose of which is to bring about a forced settlement that would establish here a second Hamastan and would endanger our security.""This is the same UN the Human Rights Council of which passed dozens of decisions this year against Israel, one decision on Iran and one decision on Syria.""We will continue to insist on our truth and we will also continue to vigorously rebuff attempts to force terms on us that would endanger our security and our future," Netanyahu stressed. "We expect national unity on this national issue."

PA UN Bid to be Postponed for Next Year-PA FM reveals Arab ambassadors mulling unilateral resolution demanding recognition and withdrawals, likely to be put off yet again.By Ari Yashar-First Publish: 12/29/2014, 1:43 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS
The council of Arab UN ambassadors gathered on Monday to discuss the Palestinian Authority (PA) resolution set to be proposed at the UN Security Council, unilaterally demanding recognition and Israeli withdrawals - however, the vote on the resolution set for Monday looks to be postponed yet again.Last Friday PA chief negotiator Saeb Erekat announced that the vote would be held that day, or at the latest this Monday. But according to PA foreign minister Riyad Al-Maliki, the vote doesn't seem likely until the new year begins.Al-Maliki told the Palestinian Arab Ma'an News Agency that the amended resolution has not been submitted yet, despite reports to the contrary, according to Walla. The resolution demands UN recognition of the PA as the "state of Palestine," as well as Israeli withdrawals from eastern Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria by 2017, and prior to that a 12-month deadline for wrapping up negotiations on a final settlement. If the council of Arab UN ambassadors agrees to submit the resolution it will be reviewed by the UN Security Council, but Al-Maliki noted that due to the new year many foreign ministries of the Security Council's member states have shut their doors temporarily, indicating the resolution may be put on hold for next year.Al-Maliki emphasized that the PA will try to push the resolution forward in the coming days, but explained the matter isn't dependent on the PA.Likud Central Committee chairman Danny Danon, who is challenging Binyamin Netanyahu for leadership of the party, on Saturday night said that if the UN recognizes the PA as "Palestine," Israel should respond by declaring sovereignty in Judea and Samaria."If on this coming Monday the UN recognizes a Palestinian state, the state of Israel must respond with unilateral steps (as well), including implementing sovereignty," declared Danon.Russia has said it will support the resolution, and while US Secretary of State John Kerry has not publicly stated that Washington would use its veto against the resolution, his spokeswoman recently said the United States will not support the resolution.

If UN Recognizes Palestine, Israel Must Annex in Judea-Samaria'-Danon, challenging Netanyahu for Likud leadership, says if UN passes PA resolution this week, sovereignty must be Israel's answer.By Ari Yashar-First Publish: 12/27/2014, 9:39 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

Likud Central Committee chairman Danny Danon, who is challenging Binyamin Netanyahu for leadership of the party, on Saturday night called on Israel to respond to an expected UN recognition of the Palestinian Authority (PA) as the "state of Palestine" by declaring sovereignty in Judea and Samaria."We must clarify in the clearest terms to the world that every unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state will bring Israeli sovereignty," declared Danon in a meeting with Likud activists in Judea's Gush Etzion region.Prime among the attendants at the meeting were Kiryat Arba Regional Council head Malakhi Levinger and Deputy Gush Etzion Regional Council head Moshe Savil."When a senior member of the Palestinian Authority, (chief negotiator) Saeb Erekat, dares to claim Israel equals ISIS (Islamic State), it's a sign that truly there is no one to talk with on the Palestinian side," said Danon.Erekat announced last Friday that the UN will likely vote on Monday on a unilateral PA resolution, which demands recognition, Israeli withdrawals from eastern Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria by 2017, and prior to that a 12-month deadline for wrapping up negotiations on a final settlement."If on this coming Monday the UN recognizes a Palestinian state, the state of Israel must respond with unilateral steps (as well), including implementing sovereignty," declared Danon.Russia has said it will support the resolution, and while US Secretary of State John Kerry has not publicly stated that Washington would use its veto against the resolution, his spokeswoman recently said the United States will not support the resolution. Two weeks ago the European Parliament voted to recognize "Palestine," following a string of European nations voting to recognize the PA as a state - the parliamentary vote came the same day Hamas was removed from the European Union's (EU) official terrorist organization list on an alleged "technicality."Danon, who is leading a push to get radical Arab MK Hanin Zoabi disqualified from coming elections, has suggested innovative proposals on another front recently as well. After a Gaza sniper attack on IDF soldiers last Wednesday, he said "for every shot from Gaza, we must take down a Hamas building."
