1.16pm: The US State Department has confirmed it is sending a Destroyer to the Java Sea, to help in the search for AirAsia flight QZ 8501. Equipment on the ship may include detection equipment deployed by air, surface and sub-surface.

12.06am: Smoke has been reportedly seen on an island in the area where AirAsia flight QZ8501 disappeared from the radar. CNN is reporting that planes have been diverted to check the source of the smoke.

11.28am: Dozens of planes and ships searching Indonesian waters for missing AirAsia flight 8501 are focusing on a patch of oil for possible clues of the plane’s whereabouts.

Australia, Malaysia and Singapore have joined the Indonesia-led search, and China says it is also sending help.The search is now concentrated on an oil patch spotted off Belitung island, across from Kalimantan on Borneo island.“We are making sure whether it was avtur (aviation fuel) from the AirAsia plane or from a vessel because that location is a shipping line,” Indonesian Air Force spokesman Hadi Tjahjanto said. National Search and Rescue Agency chief Bambang Soelistyo said ships and aircraft were searching an area where the sea is 40-50 metres deep.

10:50am: The daughter of the AirAsia pilot Irianto has begged: “Papa come home, I still need Papa.” Mr Irianto’s daughter Angela used local social media for her grief stricken plea.In the French Caribbean island of Martinique, the mother of co-pilot Remi Emmanuel Plesel said she was heartbroken and that she had “a bad feeling” when the phone rang in the middle of the night. “He wanted to be a pilot ever since he was a child,” Rolande Plesel said.

8.08am: Reports of debris and an oil slick spotted in the Java Sea have been discounted by Indonesian officials. Indonesia Vice-President Jusuf Kalla told reporters of the debris: “It has been checked and no sufficient evidence was found to confirm what was reported.”

7.52am: It looks increasingly likely that the missing AirAsia flight QZ8501 encountered atrocious weather before disappearing from the radar. The region it was flying over is known for severe thunder storms in December and January, which produce heavy turbulence, lightning, wind shear and iceing - all of which pose risks to aircraft.Indonesia’s weather agency said it had informed airlines of cumulonimbus clouds, which can cause severe thunder storms, in the region before AirAsia’s departure.

7.36am: An Indonesian university student studying in Melbourne is believed to be among the passengers on the missing AirAsia plane.Kevin Alexander Soetjipto from Malang in East Java was studying finance at Monash University’s Clayton campus, according to his LinkedIn profile. He had been in Indonesia for three years ... He was a very good pilot, an excellent one,” she said.

A mysterious user of the Chinese social media network Weibo apparently predicted the disappearance on AirAsia Flight QZ8501 almost two weeks before the plane went missing, urgently warning Chinese nationals not to use the airliner in dozens of posts.The report, carried by the Epoch Times, relates the story of how the individual “repeatedly warned people away from Malaysia Airlines (and) AirAsia.”“Do not become another victim of MH370,” warned the individual in a December 15 post, adding that AirAsia was about to be targeted by “powerful” forces which he referred to as the “black hand”.“This is a life-saving message to Europe or the US tour, do not take AirAsia (or) Malaysia Airlines airliner,” states the translated version of one of the posts.The user went on to assert that the “black hand” was out to “ruin AirAsia,” Malaysia’s second largest airline company. Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 went missing in March earlier this year, while MH17 was shot down over Ukraine in July.The individual repeated his warning in subsequent posts made on the 16th and 17th of December, writing, “This is a major event in human life, we have to pay attention,” adding, “far from AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines away, cherish life.”Speculation on the Reddit forum by Chinese users suggests that the posts may have originally been made on the 15th but then later edited with the prediction about AirAsia added after the disappearance of Flight QZ8501.The user made a total of 39 posts on the subject which were viewed by 650,000 people. A senior Boeing 777 captain, Simon Hardy, believes he has calculated exactly where the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 may have crashed into the Southern Indian Ocean.The position is S38.082 E87.400 (latitude and longitude using decimals rather than minutes).According to David Learmount of FlightGlobal arguably the world’s most respected airline safety editor the location given by the experienced captain “is not fundamentally at odds with the present MH370 search assumptions, being in much the same part of the southeastern Indian Ocean.”

Malaysia rejects evidence

However Mr Learmount adds that it is “just outside the core target area currently being trawled by a search team led by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB).”Capt Simon Hardy’s calculations are based on a combination of data which include the Inmarsat satellite communication "handshake arcs", his expertise in 777 performance calculation, and some mathematical "reverse engineering" of the navigation geometry known to apply to this flight.“Hardy is aware that many very able people have theories about MH370, not least those advising the search, but believes the result of his calculations is worthy of examination, and hopes the ATSB will find the result useful,” said Mr Learmount."I respectfully recommend it to the MH370 search team," Hardy told FlightGlobal.Captain Hardy is an experienced airline pilot and currently works as a senior 777 captain for a major international airline. “Like other aviators he was distressed by the MH370 loss, and his concern that relatives of those on board might never know what happened inspired him to begin a geometric investigation of known MH370 navigational facts. He emerged with a set of conclusions that enabled him to isolate what he believes to be MH370’s actual track,” said Mr Learmount.He explained his rationale and how the result emerged to FlightGlobal thus: "Rather than picking speeds and a route at random and making them fit with the [satcom handshake] arcs, I have managed to let the arcs tell us both the speed and direction, and finally a location – the exact track between arcs 4 and 6 – where it was doing that speed and heading. I have 'reverse engineered' it."He continues: "I was expecting to have to deduce a path from waypoint ANOKO [where Hardy calculates the 777 first turned southward] for the aircraft to get to this identified track across arcs 4-6, but then found to my amazement that the track line, when extended north from the 5th arc over a very large distance, went within 2nm of ANOKO. This was the final and strongest eureka moment!"Mr Learmount adds: “The "reverse engineering" involved testing a series of plausible tracks southward over the Indian Ocean from the 777's last known position, and discovering the only trajectory that – uniquely – matches the ratio of actual elapsed times between the consecutive Inmarsat/MH370 "handshakes". He then found, subsequently, that certain known data, when tested against that navigational trajectory, made sense. For example, on that identified track, the actual elapsed time between "handshake arcs" would occur if the 777 was flying at its long-range cruise speed – possibly a coincidence, but a likely choice by the person directing the flight.The ATSB told AirlineRatings.com that while they had not yet seen Captain Hardy's report they "remained confident in their analysis and will continue the search in the high priority areas we have determined."

JAKARTA (Reuters) - A missing AirAsia jet carrying 162 people could be at the bottom of the sea after it was presumed to have crashed off the Indonesian coast, an official said on Monday, as countries around Asia sent ships and planes to help in the search effort.The Indonesia AirAsia plane, an Airbus A320-200, disappeared after its pilot failed to get permission to fly higher to avoid bad weather during a flight from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore on Sunday.Flight QZ8501 did not issue a distress signal and disappeared over the Java Sea five minutes after requesting the change of course, which was refused because of heavy air traffic, officials said."Based on our coordinates, we expect it is in the sea, so for now (we think) it is on the sea floor," Soelistyo, head of Indonesia's search and rescue agency, told reporters when asked about the missing plane's likely location.A senior Indonesian civil aviation source told Reuters that authorities had the flight's radar data and were waiting for search and rescue teams to find debris before they started their investigation into the cause.Air force spokesman Hadi Tjahjanto said searchers were checking a report of an oil slick off the east coast of Belitung island, near where the plane lost contact. He also said searchers had picked up an emergency locator signal off the south of Borneo island but had been unable to pinpoint it.On board Flight QZ8501 were 155 Indonesians, three South Koreans, and one person each from Singapore, Malaysia and Britain. MULTINATIONAL SEARCH

Tjahjanto said two C-130 Hercules planes were focusing the search for Flight QZ8501 in areas northeast of Indonesia's Bangka island, about halfway between Surabaya and Singapore, in the Java Sea.Australia, Malaysia, Singapore and South Korea sent ships and aircraft to join the search, a foreign ministry official said. China also offered to send planes and ships and any other assistance Indonesia needed.Soelistyo said Indonesia might not have the best technology to search underwater and had accepted offers of help from the United States, Britain and France. In 2007, it took Indonesia months to recover flight data recorders from a Boeing 737-400 operated by Indonesia's Adam Air which crashed off Sulawesi island, killing all 102 people on board.According to Indonesian navy Flight Commander Laksamana Pertama Sigit Setiyanta, the sea depths in the area is only 25 to 50 meters (75-150 feet).Flight QZ8501 was traveling at 32,000 feet (9,753 meters) and had asked to fly at 38,000 feet to avoid clouds, said Joko Muryo Atmodjo, air transportation director at Indonesia's Transport Ministry.Permission was not given at the time due to traffic in the area. Five minutes later, at 6.17 a.m. on Sunday (2317 GMT Saturday), the plane lost contact with air traffic control, Atmodjo said.Data from Flightradar24.com, which tracks airline flights in real time, showed several nearby aircraft were at altitudes ranging from 34,000 to 36,000 feet at the time, levels that are not unusual for cruising aircraft.Pilots and aviation experts said thunderstorms, and requests to gain altitude to avoid them, were not unusual in that area."The airplane's performance is directly related to the temperature outside and increasing altitude can lead to freezing of the static radar, giving pilots an erroneous radar reading," said a Qantas Airways pilot with 25 years' experience flying in the region.The resulting danger is that pilots take incorrect action to control the aircraft, said the pilot, who requested anonymity.In such an emergency the pilots would likely have been wrestling to regain control of the aircraft and not had time to issue a distress signal, the Qantas pilot said.Online discussions among pilots centered on unconfirmed secondary radar data from Malaysia that suggested the missing plane was climbing at a speed of 353 knots, about 100 knots too slow in such weather conditions."At that altitude, that speed is exceedingly dangerous," Sydney-based aviation expert Geoff Thomas told Reuters."At that altitude, the thin air, the wings won't support the aircraft at that speed and you get an aerodynamic stall."Safety authorities say accidents involving a loss of control, such as might occur in bad weather, are rare but almost always catastrophic.

The Indonesian pilot was experienced and the plane last underwent maintenance in mid-November, the airline said. JAKARTA (AFP) - The AirAsia plane that went missing with 162 people on board en route for Singapore is likely at the bottom of the sea, Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency chief said on Monday.“Based on the coordinates given to us and evaluation that the estimated crash position is in the sea, the hypothesis is the plane is at the bottom of the sea,” Mr Bambang Soelistyo told a press conference.“That’s the preliminary suspicion and it can develop based on the evaluation of the result of our search.”Mr Soelistyo said Indonesia did not have “the tools", such as submersible vehicles, required to retrieve the plane from the seabed, but that it is reaching out to other countries for help if necessary.“Due to the lack of technology that we have, I have coordinated with our foreign minister so we will borrow from other countries which have offered. They are the UK, France and US,” he said.The Airbus A320-200 disappeared on Sunday en route from Surabaya in Indonesia’s east Java to Singapore after the crew requested a change of flight plan due to stormy weather, in the third crisis for a Malaysian carrier this year.Singapore, Malaysia and Australia have dispatched aircraft and ships to assist Indonesia in the search, which is centred on the Java Sea. As I was told when I was Welfare Minister, ‘A hungry child, you will not find him at age 21 completing an aviation course in the army.’"Kahlon added, "Today I do not know many people who can say to their children, ‘You will have it better.’ We all work, all earn a living, we have all gained an education. The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) has published a report documenting photographs of Iranian Revolutionary Guard soldiers "killing time" at the Lebanon-Israel border.Preliminary information suggests the pictures were taken in October, but were released only recently, along with verbal threats against Israel. Several photographs published contain the caption: "We have arrived to the cursed Israel."The Twitter account linked to the Revolutionary Guards uploaded a number of the pictures on Thursday, with the headline, "The Islamic Republic soldiers are on the border of occupied Palestine."The soldiers' faces were blurred, so as not to be identified.According to MEMRI's reports, the photos were also published a week and a half ago on the Iranian military's website. In this case, the soldiers' faces are visible.The Iranian military's websites showcases photos of soldiers taken in the Bekaa Valley and Baalbek in south Lebanon. "We have come close to the motherland of corruption - the cursed Israel. Jerusalem mayor Nir Barkat may soon be appointed as minister of Jerusalem affairs by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.According to a Channel 10 report Sunday, Barkat and Netanyahu have held several meetings on the topic and a legal probe is being undertaken to check whether Barkat can serve as mayor and minister. Barkat, according to the report, has no intention of leaving the Jerusalem mayor’s office.The Prime Minister’s Office told Channel 10 that “such an agreement [between Barkat and Netanyahu] did not exist.” Barkat’s office refused to comment.The report indicated that Netanyahu may consider such a move to counter the Jerusalem deputy mayors’ support for rival Moshe Kahlon who heads the newly formed Kulanu party.Both deputy mayors Yaakov Kahlon, Moshe Kahlon’s brother, and Rami Levy have said they were backing Kulanu. Relatives of the late Sir Winston Churchill feared he might convert to Islam, a recently discovered letter reveals.A missive written in August 1907 to Churchill by his future sister-in-law Lady Gwendoline Bertie, in which she pleads with him not to convert, was discovered at the University of Cambridge, the Telegraph reported.“Please don’t become converted to Islam; I have noticed in your disposition a tendency to orientalise [fascination with the Orient and Islam], Pasha-like tendencies, I really have,” wrote Bertie, who would later marry Churchill’s brother Jack.“If you come into contact with Islam your conversion might be effected with greater ease than you might have supposed, call of the blood, don’t you know what I mean, do fight against it,” she urged.The letter was discovered by Dr. Warren Dockter, a history research fellow at Cambridge who was conducting research for his book “Winston Churchill and the Islamic World: Orientalism, Empire and Diplomacy in the Middle East.”“Churchill had fought in Sudan and on the North West frontier of India so had much experience on being in ‘Islamic areas’,” Dockter told the Telegraph on Sunday.The British prime minister, a key figure in the defeat of the Nazis in World War II, was a strong admirer of Islam and the “culture of the Orient,” Dockter indicated.“His views of Islamic people and culture were an often paradoxical and complex combination of imperialist perceptions composed of typical orientalist ideals fused with the respect, understanding and magnanimity he had gained from his experiences in his early military career, creating a perspective that was uniquely Churchillian,” he wrote in his book.Despite the fascination however, Churchill is said to have had a limited knowledge of the religion as demonstrated in an incident in which, as colonial secretary during the early 1920s, he asked what the difference was between Sunni and Shiite Muslims.

The AirAsia plane which went missing with 162 people on board en route for Singapore is likely at the bottom of the sea, Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency chief said Monday.“Based on the coordinates given to us and evaluation that the estimated crash position is in the sea, the hypothesis is the plane is at the bottom of the sea,” Bambang Soelistyo told a press conference.“That’s the preliminary suspicion and it can develop based on the evaluation of the result of our search.”Indonesia had resumed a sea and aerial search at dawn Monday for the plane, as anguished relatives waited desperately for news.The Airbus A320-200 disappeared en route from Surabaya in Indonesia’s east Java to Singapore after the crew requested a change of flight plan due to stormy weather, in the third crisis for a Malaysian carrier this year.Five aircraft will be sent to search for the plane, including two C-130 military transport aircraft and a Boeing 737, Indonesian air force spokesman Hadi Cahyanto told AFP.“Two planes have already left. Three more will follow suit. It is cloudy in some parts but still bright,” Cahyanto said.“We are focusing the search area in the waters on the eastern and northern part of Belitung island.”Australia, Malaysia and Singapore have also joined the search, which is centred on the Java Sea. Now one of Asia's most successful carriers, AirAsia was once a struggling Malaysian government-owned company.In 2001, former music executive Tony Fernandes bought the heavily-indebted firm for a token sum of 25 cents.Keeping the brand name, he created Asia's first low-cost airline, taking on local established rivals such as Malaysia Airlines and Australia's Qantas.With the slogan "Now Everyone Can Fly", AirAsia now covers approximately 100 destinations across more than 15 countries, although many of these flights are serviced by associates and subsidiaries that use the company's brand name.It is one of these associates, Indonesia AirAsia, which was operating flight QZ8501 from Surabaya to Singapore when it lost contact with air traffic control on Sunday morning.It flies Airbus A320 aircraft along more than 30 routes, to destinations in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and Australia.Indonesia AirAsia is 49% owned by the main company, but has a separate chief executive, Sunu Widyatmoko. (Reuters) - Indonesia was set to resume at first light the search for an AirAsia plane carrying 162 people from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore, which went missing on Sunday just after the pilot requested a change in course to avoid bad weather.Singapore said it had sent two naval vessels to help the Indonesian military look for the Airbus (AIR.PA) A320-200 operated by Indonesia AirAsia, adding a C-130 air force plane took part in the search on Sunday.Malaysia would send three naval vessels and a C-130 to assist, Singapore's Channel News Asia television reported. Australia, the United States, Britain, South Korea and India also offered help ranging from planes and navy ships to experts and investigators."We are deeply shocked and saddened by this incident," said Indonesia AirAsia Chief Executive Sunu Widyatmoko. "We are cooperating with the relevant authorities to the fullest extent to determine the cause of this incident."The carrier is 49 percent owned by Malaysia-based budget carrier Air Asia (AIRA.KL).
