A pro-Israel blog post written last week by Paul Estrin, president of the Green Party of Canada, has caught the attention of Canadians and others as it has been widely shared on social media.The essay, published on the Green Party of Canada’s website, is titled, “Why Gaza Makes Me Sad.” In a departure from the party’s widely perceived leftist and pro-Palestinian stance, Estrin’s words are supportive of Israel and critical of Palestinians and their leadership.In his blog post, Estrin places the blame for the current escalation between Israel and Gaza squarely on Hamas. He also emphasizes that the Gazans themselves allowed Hamas to take control.“Since August 2005, Gazans have been in control of their own destiny. Some might say otherwise, yet Gazans have their own government and they are their own people: If their neighbors, Egypt and Israel, close their borders to Gaza, one must look to a Gaza run by a terrorist organization cum government that teaches and propagates hate, death and destruction to understand why,” he writes.“The Gazan government has had ample opportunity over these past years, nearly a decade, to alter its ways, change its mantra of death to the Jews, and become respectable caretakers of the people in their charge. Palestinian victims describe being used as shields by Hamas

Members of a Gaza family whose farm was turned into a "fortress" by Hamas fighters have reported that they were helpless to stop Hamas from using them as human shields. They described how for years Hamas has used their property and homes as shields for military installations from which to launch rockets into Israel, dig tunnels and store arms. According to the victims, those who tried to object were shot in the legs by Hamas.

The Palestinian Authority (PA) is continuing its efforts to join the International Criminal Court (ICC), the Ma’an news agency reported on Tuesday.According to the report, the PA’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Riyad al-Maliki, met with ICC officials to discuss the Israeli operation in Gaza.During his visit, Al-Maliki inquired about the legal procedures necessary for the PA to join the ICC and sign the Rome Statute in order to take action against possible Israeli war crimes in Gaza, according to the report.Al-Maliki said he would consult members of the Palestinian Authority government on the matter after his visit.He noted that the PA should now qualify for ICC membership due to its status as a UN non-member observer state.PA officials realize, however, that joining the ICC is a calculated risk because it would give Israel a forum to pursue war crimes charges against the PA as well and particularly against Hamas.In a recent interview, the PA's envoy to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) admitted the PA has no hope of pressing charges against Israel in international courts - because Palestinian terrorist groups are far worse violators of international law themselves.Noting concerns that Israel could launch legal offensives of its own against the PA should it sign up to the ICC, the presenter asked whether such a move would be realistic. The IDF has published excerpts from a captured Hamas combat manual on "Urban Warfare", showing how the Islamist terrorist group exploits civilian casualties - and the knowledge that the IDF will seek to avoid them - to its advantage.The IDF says the manual was captured in Shujaiya suburb of Gaza City, which was the scene of particularly heavy fighting between Israeli forces and Hamas and Islamic Jihad terrorists.Among other things, the manual urges Hamas fighters to exploit the IDF's desire to minimize civilian casualties, noting:"The soldiers and commanders (of the IDF) must limit their use of weapons and tactics that lead to the harm and unnecessary loss of people and [destruction of] civilian facilities. It is difficult for them to get the most use out of their firearms, especially of supporting fire [e.g. artillery]."Echoing official Hamas rhetoric, which glorifies civilians used as human shields as "holy warriors" and "martyrs", the manual says that the "presence of civilians are pockets of resistance", in that their presence can contribute to the organization's war effort in three specific ways:

    (1) Problems with opening fire
    (2) Problems in controlling the civilian population during operations and afterward
    (3) Assurance of supplying medical care to civilians who need it

Apart from the use of human shields, the manual also sheds light on Hamas's use of the civilian infrastructure of Gaza to rally support.Much of Hamas's military infrastructure and hardware is stored in residential homes - usually of its members - complicating the IDF's efforts to reach them in aerial strikes.An expose by Indian NDTV highlighted how terrorists deliberately set up rocket launchpads in heavily-populated residential areas, risking severe collateral damage in the event of an IDF retaliation. Thee manual illustrates how even if civilians heed IDF warning to leave - which Hamas encourages them to ignore - the destruction to homes can be used to their advantage as well:"The destruction of civilian homes: This increases the hatred of the citizens towards the attackers [the IDF] and increases their gathering [support] around the city defenders (resistance forces[i.e. Hamas])."Illustrating the point, a recent AFP report told of how a Palestinian civilian returned to his house following the 72-hour ceasefire currently in effect - only to find evidence it had been taken over and used as a military position by terrorists."Is this is really my town?" asked Khayri Hasan al-Masri, a father of three who returned to heavily-damaged Beit Hanun in the north for the first time since fleeing for his life when the ground offensive began on July 17. GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — The outlines of a solution for battered, blockaded Gaza are emerging after Tuesday's tentative Israel-Hamas cease-fire: Norway is organizing a donor conference and Western-backed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas aims to oversee rebuilding and reassert his authority in the territory, lost to Hamas in 2007.Forces loyal to Abbas would be deployed at Gaza's crossings to encourage Israel and Egypt to lift the closure they imposed after the Hamas takeover.Indirect Israel-Hamas talks in Cairo are to tackle the details. The hope is that promises of a better life for Gazans will coax compromise and avert what had been looking like a fight to the finish.The gaps remain wide, especially between Israel and Hamas.Israel says it has inflicted a painful blow to Hamas' military capabilities in the monthlong fighting and wants to make sure the group cannot re-arm if border restrictions are eased."The extent to which we are going to be ready to cooperate with the efforts to have better access and movement in Gaza will deeply depend on the kind of arrangements that would secure our peace and security," said Yossi Kuperwasser, a senior official in Israel's Strategic Affairs Ministry.Hamas, in turn, has signaled flexibility on ceding some authority to Abbas in Gaza, but insists on having a say on reconstruction and that it will not disarm.Izzat Rishq, a senior Hamas official, said disarming isn't up for discussion."We'd take the life of anyone who tries to take the weapons of resistance," he told The Associated Press.Despite such tough talk, Hamas is in a position of relative weakness.The Islamic militant group's fortunes changed dramatically last year after the Egyptian military deposed a Hamas-friendly government in Cairo and began closing hundreds of smuggling tunnels under the Gaza-Egypt border.The closures deprived Hamas of a key source of revenue — the taxation of goods brought through the tunnels — and prevented weapons and cash destined for Hamas from flowing into Gaza.By this spring, Hamas was in such a severe financial crisis that it accepted a reconciliation deal with Abbas. The unity government was stumbling by the time Israel-Hamas fighting erupted on July 8.Even before the war, Gaza was in bad shape because of the prolonged blockade.Unemployment in the impoverished territory of 1.8 million people had risen well above 50 percent, in part because of Egypt's tunnel closures. CALGARY - Police investigators are in Mexico as part of an ongoing investigation into the disappearance of a five-year-old boy and his grandparents.The bodies of Nathan O'Brien and Alvin and Kathy Liknes have not been recovered since the three disappeared from the couple's Calgary home June 29, but police have laid three murder charges.The couple had been having an estate sale that weekend as they downsized ahead of a move to Edmonton and then to a residence in Mexico. Nathan was at his grandparents' house for a sleepover.A police spokeswoman confirmed Tuesday that officers are in Mexico."It's just making sure that all the avenues are covered. There's nothing to it other than just crossing t's and dotting the i's," said Calgary police spokeswoman Emma Poole. "We're not going to get into details of how long they've been down there, where they are or how many went."Douglas Garland, 54, is facing two charges of first-degree murder and one count of second-degree murder.Garland was initially considered a person of interest in the case and was held on an identity theft charge unrelated to the disappearance of the trio.Garland had lived for several years in Vancouver using the identity of a dead person. Police alleged he was using that identity again when they brought him in for questioning in the missing persons case.That charge has now been stayed by the Crown. KIEV (Reuters) - Ukrainian government forces, backed by warplanes, kept up a military offensive to claw back lost territory from pro-Russian separatists on Tuesday while casting a nervous eye at Russian military exercises over the border.Kiev's military said government forces had clashed 26 times with separatists in the Russian-speaking east in the 24 hours up to Tuesday morning, while fighter jets had struck at rebel positions and concentrations of military equipment.But it acknowledged that separatist forces had pushed it out of Yasynuvata, a railway junction near the main rebel-controlled city of Donetsk that it seized from separatists on Sunday.Tension rose further with Ukraine denouncing Russian war games near the joint border as a "provocation" and alleging violations of Ukrainian air space by Russian warplanes and drones, as well as cross-border shelling from Russia.Defence officials said separatists had also opened fire on unarmed Ukrainian soldiers on Tuesday as they crossed back into Ukraine from Russia, where they had taken shelter from fighting.Ukraine acknowledged on Monday that 311 soldiers and border guards had been forced by fighting with separatists to cross into Russia. It said they had destroyed their weapons before crossing the border, but the rebels said they had left them behind, enabling separatists to seize them. rome-Cardinal Fernando Filoni is getting ready to pay what will be his second visit to Seoul in the space of just a few months. The Italian cardinal, who is the current Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples went on a pastoral visit to the country last October, to take part in the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the diocese of Suwon. During this visit he found out about the source of the Korean Catholic community’s extraordinary missionary energy and the forms in which this was expressed. Now, the head of the Vatican dicastery is preparing to accompany the Pope on his mid-August visit to the Asian country. Focus will also be directed at China. What lessons can be learnt from the experience of Korean Catholics and other Christian communities? “The Korean Church has a missionary verve in its DNA which has always manifested itself in a unique way in the country’s laity. Many years ago, when I was secretary at the Nunciature of Teheran, I remember a Korean couple came to see me and the lady said to me: I would like to ask you to be my husband’s godfather. I am Catholic, he is not, but he wants to be baptized. It was obviously not a priest or a missionary who was responsible for the apostolic work of the initial proclamation followed by the preparation period, but the wife. The husband’s decision to join the Catholic faith had come about within the context of everyday family life. These dynamics have always been the main vehicle for the transmission of the faith in Korea. Historically, it has always been baptized individuals who have proclaimed the Christian message by virtue of their baptism. There has never been a perception of the Korean Church being “imposed” from the outside, for example through traditional means of evangelization. When the Gospel reached Korea 300 years ag, there were five wise men who asked to get to know it better and then they invited Propaganda Fide to send the first missionaries. So event he first evangelizing body was local. These dynamics prefigure the pastoral vision and image of a Church that is in a “permanent state of mission” in an individual way. Pope Francis suggested everyone should be in a “permanent state of mission” in the “Evangelii Gaudium”.And yet, campaigns that seem to present evangelization as a business expansion strategy have crept in, even in Korea. Some have referred to it as “spiritual marketing”. “This temptation can spread anywhere, not just in Korea. It happens when so-called pastoral programmes – which are indeed useful tools – are seen as proselytism strategies modelled on publicity campaigns. This turns into a battle to see who can get the most “clients”. The apostolic mission is of a wholly different nature. What makes it attractive is the enthusiasm baptized individuals show in announcing the Christian message. This enthusiasm is often stronger among novices. These dynamics are very must alive in Korea and are a good antidote for those who wrongly view the Church as some kind of “product” of pastoral documents or identify it as some kind of service business run by bishops and priests, a business in which the laity are mere spectators or “users”. In Korea as in any other country, the Church grows like yeast – an image used in the Gospel - which ferments the dough silently, with an internal energy that changes the nature of a shapeless mass, transforming it into a clearly defined object.”Which elements of Christian martyrdom must remain fixed in people’s minds in order to avoid over-simplified interpretations and manipulation of information regarding Christian persecution? “In Korea, as in other countries, Christians were killed for being baptized. But becoming a Christian was also seen as an act of breaking away from ancestral customs and traditions based on the Confucian tradition. By becoming martyrs Christians demonstrated the impossibility of refusing the gift they had received in their own lives. Those who persecuted Christians, on the other hand, mostly perceived martyrdom as a punishment for what they saw as a rejection of tradition and the established order. Both of these inseparable factors need to be taken into consideration when interpreting martyrdom. Beatification is the gesture with which the Church emphasizes that baptism and the gift of faith grant an individual the grace to bear witness to the glory of God, even giving up their life to do so.  In today’s culture, people often lose sight of this aspect of Christian martyrdom which risks being seen only as a violation of human rights or as a means of avenging related wrongdoings.”In the Apostolic Exhortation “Evangelii Gaudium” Pope Francis stresses that the Christian message cannot be identified exclusively with any one culture, not even with those that “have been closely associated with the preaching of the Gospel and the development of Christian thought.” Bearing this in mind, what are your thoughts regarding the Korea? “I was saying that in the beginning, the first scholars and academics who were interested in Christianity clearly perceived it as wisdom that had come from the outside, from the West. But with Matteo Ricci and his Chinese pupil Xu Quangqi we see a reflection on the very nature of this new Christian experience which is seen as distinct from the cultural and scientific elements typical of Western Christianity which China and the East came into contact with when Christianity was introduced here. When the Chinese emperor asked Xu Guangqi what led him to search for something outside China’s immense cultural heritage and thus become a Christian, Xu replied that in Christianity, he found something that could not possibly have come from humans; something which could not be conceived by any human culture, no matter how great: the doctrine of forgiveness, forgiving your own enemy! Xu intimated that this is how he intuited that Christianity does not originate from humans. That it is something totally different.”

Korea will naturally look at China. Many Chinese websites publish Pope Francis’ messages on a daily basis.“The attention Pope Francis receives in many spheres of Chinese society is an encouraging sign. The fact that many of his homilies and speeches are readily available offers spiritual comfort to Catholics in a country where the government still exercises control over religious life. The phenomenology the Pope refers to when expressing himself on social questions amongst other things, even gets the government thinking. China is a vast and complex reality which favours careful study and analysis of a situation over instant action.”What would be a sign of China opening up and showing a genuine interest? “One would hope that besides the curiosity the country feels towards the Holy Father, we will also see the implementation of the religious rights of the Chinese people, which are ratified by the Constitution. This recognizes the freedoms of the five main religious faiths. As far as Catholics are concerned, the country needs to ensure it applies the principles of the Constitution according to which the Catholic Church must not be considered as a foreign body that is seeking to “interfere” from the outside. Instead it should be seen as an essential part of many Chinese people’s lives, something which is ingrained in their culture and in the system of social relations.”Seeing religion as “subjected” to politics is misleading and represents a typically Marxist vision. It is still a negative vision people should be wary of. It is a dated and backward thinking vision based on fear.”Which criteria should be followed as a means of fostering fruitful relations between the local Church, the Holy See and civil authorities? “The communion between faithful and other Catholics around the world is part of the Catholic experience. Given the dynamic nature of the Catholic faith, one cannot say: you can think what you want in terms of principles but when it comes to the practical side of things, you must behave as I tell you. The hope is that the People’s Republic of China and the Holy See will also reach an agreement based on commitment, mutual respect and positive relations. In this agreement, the Holy See would have to recognize the limits facing its presence in the country, while the Chinese State would need to recognize that within its own spiritual and organisational environment, the Church must be allowed its own freedom. No Chinese Catholic can renounce his or her visible communion with the Bishop of Rome, the Successor of Peter, and his role within the Church.”
Pope Francis will beatify 124 martyrs in Korea.“Discrimination, persecution and martyrdom have been a part of Korean Church history for at least two hundred years. The first scholars who took an interest in Christianity welcomed it right from the start as knowledge that had come from outside; this knowledge had come from China where it had arrived thanks to Matteo Ricci and the Jesuits. The first converts embraced the faith as a “light” that came to Korea from the outside and was not part of the cultural framework, based on Confucianism and Buddhism, that shaped local society. In Seoul I had the opportunity to celebrate mass in the Jeoldusan shrine on the “Hill of Martyrs”, where Christians were once beheaded and their mutilated body parts thrown into the river below and washed away. We’re talking about 10,000 Korean martyrs. But most of their names are unknown. Those who have been canonized so far and those who will be beatified by Pope Francis are just a drop in the ocean of anonymous saints. They are the ones whose historical background the Church has managed to trace. There is even a Chinese priest – Fr. Zhu Wen-mo – among the 124 individuals who will be beatified on 16 August.”

Troika set to be dismantled

But on Monday, Reuters reported that senior EU officials are now in early discussions on disbanding the troika and allowing Greece greater freedom to formulate and pursue its own policies."There would be no troika," an unnamed official told the news agency."There must be Greek ownership of reform. The Greeks have until October to come up with a programme, which would be decided by December for the start of 2015,” added the source.Greece obtained two bailouts totalling €240 billion.But the cash-strapped Greek government is still facing €320 billion in debt or the equivalent to 175 percent of its entire annual economic. One idea, reports Reuters, is to award Greece some debt relief for every milestone achieved once it commits to a six-year plan of reform. The IMF would still supervise the country until 2016.The troika would be scrapped in favour of a special European Commission taskforce. The taskforce would then check up on Greek reforms twice a year.In case things go wrong, Greece would get a precautionary eurozone loan and tighter supervision.

The insurgents could use it to “flood Iraqi cities or withhold water from farms,” wreaking further havoc across northern Iraq, Reuters reports.While Iraqi state television reported the Mosul Dam had fallen to insurgents following a 24-hour battle, Kurdish officials are maintaining that the region's Peshmerga forces --  literally "those who confront death" -- are still in charge of the dam, while they admit that towns in the area have fallen under IS control. Peshmerga forces are reportedly preparing to take back the dam in a “major offensive,” Reuters reports.There are some doubts over whether the dam has been fully seized. The Mosul Dam is still under government control, Abdul-Jaleel Sahib, deputy director general of the state-run Commission for Dams, told Bloomberg News. The dam, which sits on the Tigris River, provides electricity to Mosul, CNN reports. "If you control the Mosul Dam, you can threaten just about everybody," Daniel Pipes, president of the Middle East Forum, told CNN.  It was a law designed to prosecute organized-crime outfits that were harming innocent civilians and businesses and in some cases strangling entire American cities. It was called the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, and the law was passed in the early 1970s. It helped put an end to an era of sprawling organized-crime families, to the Mafia as we knew it.Most Americans know the statute’s acronym, RICO, and that it allows prosecution for racketeering activity performed as part of an ongoing criminal enterprise. Such activity may include illegal gambling, bribery, kidnapping, murder, money laundering, counterfeiting, embezzlement, drug trafficking, slavery, and a host of other unsavory business practices. If a criminal enterprise commits murder and extortion, members from top to bottom can be prosecuted as if they committed the crimes themselves.As we watch media accounts of Israel’s military move in Gaza, it is worth thinking about RICO. And it is worth thinking about the media’s role in the overall strategy of one of the world’s most dangerous and evil criminal enterprises, Hamas. Much of the Western media is acting as Hamas’s air force in a battle plan that actually includes — by design, on Hamas’s part — the very kind of reporting the world is witnessing on TVs and smartphones and in newspapers around the world.Hamas knows that much of the Western media will spin the narrative in terms of moral equivalency, at best, and, at worst, as a narrative about Israel as occupier and the Palestinian residents of Gaza as innocents — about Israel the Goliath, and Gaza Palestinians the David; about Israel the guilty power, and Gaza Palestinians the innocent casualties.But those casualties in Gaza are not innocent. The deaths of all those women and children are not collateral damage but part of a deliberate plan — not of Israel’s design but Hamas’s.Indeed, dead Gaza children are the goal of the Hamas campaign –  more than dead Israeli children, which is a part of the Hamas Covenant.The truth is that dead women and children in Gaza are the lifeblood of the Hamas campaign. The slaughter of their own innocents is a public-relations tactic to gain sympathy from Western media. The very same media are either predisposed to side against Israel for any reason or incapable of distinguishing between good and evil.The latter does Hamas’s bidding by perpetuating the myth that there are two morally competing visions at war in Gaza.But anyone with any sense knows there is no real moral equivalency between the government of Israel and Hamas. How can that be when there have been recent reports that Hamas and Islamic Jihad are transporting themselves around the streets of Gaza in ambulances packed with children? Israel, on the other hand, sends its soldiers into the streets of Gaza at great risk, and does so to mitigate civilian casualties. Israel goes to great lengths to spare innocent lives, dropping leaflets, where and when they can, warning the people of Gaza of impending strikes.What’s Hamas’s response? So determined is Hamas to give media the story the media crave, its leaders convince their own people to ignore the warnings. Indeed, the stark difference between Israel and Hamas was summarized in one perfectly calibrated sentence by Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu. “We’re using missile defense to protect our civilians,” he explained, “and they’re using their civilians to protect their missiles.”As Charles Krauthammer pointed out in a recent Washington Post column, rarely is the world presented with such striking moral clarity. The Washington Post’s editorial page actually had the guts to call Hamas’s strategy what it is: depraved.What no one is really pointing out is the depravity of many media outlets for treating this tragic situation as something it is not. It is not a conflict between two legitimate and competing visions of life. Were it not for the Western media’s work in furthering the narrative of disproportionate retaliation, and moral equivalency, and were it not for the media’s steadfast refusal to face their own complicity in Hamas’s murderous endgame, Hamas would cease its perverse use of children and women as human shields and return to the old-fashioned strategy of using women and children as human bombs.Even the most committed Hamas apologists can’t excuse such activity. Blaming Israel for the dead children of Gaza is a much easier moral lift.The truth is that few in the media are pointing out their own complicity in Hamas’s overarching strategy. But then again, the media are not very good at turning the cameras on themselves — or at asking themselves hard questions. Like it or not, Western media are the point of the spear in Hamas’s plan to delegitimize Israel and destroy it. And yet the media act like innocents, as if they were witnesses rather than enablers.One thing is certain. It’s a long-running reality-TV series Hamas is producing and directing in Gaza. It is supplying real-life victims and choreographing their deaths. And the Western media are covering the story without conveying the stark reality of the degree to which it is scripted. Indeed, the Western media are playing precisely the role that the leaders of Hamas hoped they would play, acting as the distribution arm of the terrorist organization’s snuff film.Does anyone believe Hamas would be doing what it has been doing in Gaza if the media revealed its insidious modus operandi? While Israel disputes the accounts, the evidence suggests that Israel committed the following six offenses:

1-Violating its duty to protect the civilian population of the Gaza Strip. Despite Israel’s 2005 “disengagement” from Gaza, the territory remains occupied. Israel unleashed military firepower against a people it is legally bound to protect.

2-Imposing collective punishment in the form of a blockade, in violation of Article 33 of the Fourth Geneva Convention. In June 2007, after Hamas took power in the Gaza Strip, Israel imposed suffocating restrictions on trade and movement. The blockade — an act of war in customary international law — has helped plunge families into poverty, children into malnutrition, and patients denied access to medical treatment into their graves. People in Gaza thus faced Israel’s winter onslaught in particularly weakened conditions.

3-Deliberately attacking civilian targets. The laws of war permit attacking a civilian object only when it is making an effective contribution to military action and a definite military advantage is gained by its destruction. Yet an Israeli general, Dan Harel, said, “We are hitting not only terrorists and launchers, but also the whole Hamas government and all its wings.” An Israeli military spokeswoman, Maj. Avital Leibovich, avowed that “anything affiliated with Hamas is a legitimate target.”Israeli fire destroyed or damaged mosques, hospitals, factories, schools, a key sewage plant, institutions like the parliament, the main ministries, the central prison and police stations, and thousands of houses.

4-Willfully killing civilians without military justification. When civilian institutions are struck, civilians — persons who are not members of the armed forces of a warring party, and are not taking direct part in hostilities — are killed.International law authorizes killings of civilians if the objective of the attack is military, and the means are proportional to the advantage gained. Yet proportionality is irrelevant if the targets of attack were not military to begin with. Gaza government employees — traffic policemen, court clerks, secretaries and others — are not combatants merely because Israel considers Hamas, the governing party, a terrorist organization. Many countries do not regard violence against foreign military occupation as terrorism.Of 1,434 Palestinians killed in the Gaza invasion, 960 were civilians, including 121 women and 288 children, according to a United Nations special rapporteur, Richard Falk. Israeli military lawyers instructed army commanders that Palestinians who remained in a targeted building after having been warned to leave were “voluntary human shields,” and thus combatants. Israeli gunners “knocked on roofs” — that is, fired first at corners of buildings, before hitting more vulnerable points — to “warn” Palestinian residents to flee.With nearly all exits from the densely populated Gaza Strip blocked by Israel, and chaos reigning within it, this was a particularly cruel flaunting of international law. Willful killings of civilians that are not required by military necessity are grave breaches of the Geneva Conventions, and are considered war crimes under the Nuremberg principles.

5-Deliberately employing disproportionate force. Last year, Gen. Gadi Eisenkot, head of Israel’s northern command, speaking on possible future conflicts with neighbors, stated, “We will wield disproportionate power against every village from which shots are fired on Israel, and cause immense damage and destruction.” Such a frank admission of illegal intent can constitute evidence in a criminal prosecution.

6-Illegal use of weapons, including white phosphorus. Israel was finally forced to admit, after initial denials, that it employed white phosphorous in the Gaza Strip, though Israel defended its use as legal. White phosphorous may be legally used as an obscurant, not as a weapon, as it burns deeply and is extremely difficult to extinguish.Israeli political and military personnel who planned, ordered or executed these possible offenses should face criminal prosecution. The appointment of Richard Goldstone, the former war crimes prosecutor from South Africa, to head a fact-finding team into possible war crimes by both parties to the Gaza conflict is an important step in the right direction. This year marks 1,946 years since the destruction of the Second Temple by Roman soldiers in 70 CE, who razed Jerusalem and murdered millions of Jews in order to solidify their rule over the Land of Israel.The Ninth of Av concludes a mourning period that commenced three weeks ago, on the Fast of the 17th of Tammuz, which marked the first stages of the occupation and subsequent destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans in the Second Temple period, and by the Babylonians in the First Temple. The days are spend in introspection and efforts to increase loving-kindness between Jews, to correct the moral and social failings that are seen as the chief reasons behind G-d's Decision to allow the Romans to exile the Jews.This year, the period has also been spent in a fight against Hamas; Operation Protective Edge's air campaign preceded the 17th of Tammuz by just a few days, and with Tisha B'Av about to begin, the war in Gaza shows no sign of calming down. By Monday afternoon, Hamas had fired about 80 rockets at Israel, despite and Israeli-declared humanitarian cease-fire.The “Three Weeks” period between the 17th of Tammuz and the Ninth of Av is generally considered as an "inauspicious" time, and observant Jews generally avoid court cases, business deals, parties, vacations, and the like. No eating is permitted for the 24-hour period of the fast from sundown Monday to sundown Tuesday, and bathing, hair-cuts, wearing leather shoes (seen as more comfortable) and sexual relations are all prohibited as well, among other things. Torah learning is also largely proscribed, and Jews generally spend the day reading the Book of Eicha, written by the Prophet Jeremiah after the destruction of the First Temple, and reciting Kinot, elegies that describe the suffering, death and destruction Jews faced in exile, whether in Christian or Arab lands.Many community events are held on this day, with groups getting together to discuss the Jewish future. Tens of thousands gather at the Kotel, mourning the fact that the Temple Mount is still under the control of non-Jews. After two terror attacks in Jerusalem Monday afternoon, police said they would be out in force throughout Tisha B'Av to ensure the safety of Jews visiting the Kotel.On Monday night, groups will take part in the traditional march around the walls of the Old City, to express the Jewish yearning for the rebuilding of the Temple.The route of the march will be from the New Gate to the Damascus Gate, from there to the Flowers Gate and onward to the Lion's Gate.  Speaking Monday, Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon said that Operation Protective Edge was not over, and would not be over until there was a complete cease-fire from Hamas – and that meant a complete cessation of rocket attacks on Israel, one that would remain intact. On a visit to Ashkelon, Yaalon said that the IDF needed “a little more time” to finish up its operations to destroy Hamas' terror tunnels.Yaalon said that the tunnel threat would be removed from Israel after the war was over. In any case, he said, the defense establishment was prepared to ensure that Hamas terrorists who tried to sneak into Israel via tunnels or other methods would be stopped.
