IDF Soldiers Come under Fire from Egypt-Shots reported from Egyptian border targeting IDF forces. No one was hurt.-By Ari Yashar-First Publish: 3/24/2014, 1:51 PM- SRAEL NATION ALNEWS

IDF forces patrolling the border with Egypt were targeted by fire from the Egyptian side on Monday. No injuries were reported in the incident, and further details are currently being investigated. The soldiers were just north-west of Be'er Milka, located right on the border with Egypt to the south of Gaza, when they were shot at.The Sinai peninsula has been a hotbed of terrorism, especially for Salafist terrorists and those aligned with the Muslim Brotherhood. The attack comes on the same day that an Egyptian court sentenced 529 Muslim Brotherhood members to death, over their support of ousted President Mohammed Morsi in clashes with the military. Morsi was deposed last July.

Knesset Passes Aliyah Holiday Bill-'Yom Haaliyah' introduced as national celebration of Jewish immigration, enshrining core principle of Aliyah.-By Ari Yashar-First Publish: 3/24/2014, 3:21 PM-Israelnationalnews

The Knesset introduced a new bill this week to mark the Hebrew date of the 10th of Nisan (April 10 this year) as "Yom Haaliyah," a national holiday celebrating Jewish immigration to Israel. The holiday intends to recognize Aliyah (immigration) as a core principle of the Jewish state, and honor the contributions to the country by immigrants. The bill states the holiday's purpose is to "realize the value and supreme importance of Aliyah in the past, present and future to the strengthening of Israel from within."MKs Robert Ilatov (Yisrael Beytenu), Hilik Bar (Labor), Gila Gamliel (Likud) and Yoel Rozbozov (Yesh Atid), who serves as Chariman of the Committee for Immigration, Absorption and Disapora Affairs, sponsored the bill. Various parties in both the coalition and opposition have thrown their weight behind the bill. The 10th of Nisan was selected for the holiday given the historical importance of the date, on which the Jews crossed the Jordan River into Israel after the Exodus from Egypt, as recorded in the Book of Joshua. The bill notes this was the "first mass Aliyah in history."MK Bar remarked that "the Yom Haaliyah bill is an important national day in a country  that was built on Aliyah, since that it is an inseparable part of the country's essence."Yom Haaliyah is planned to be celebrated in various ceremonies, highlighting the contribution of immigrants who have found their way home to Israel from all parts of the world.Initially, the bill was drafted and lobbied for by Jay Shultz, an immigrant from New York who founded TLV Internationals, a large online community for young professional immigrants; Schultz was joined in the bill by Jonathan Javor who immigrated from London, and who also was part of TLV Internationals before working for the Mayor of Tel Aviv to plan the absorption of immigrants.

"We have a lot to rejoice about"

"Yom HaAliyah is a chance for Israel to reach out to all Jews throughout the world and say that Israel is not a place for them to just consider living in; this is their Home," noted Javor, “with this new national holiday, the Jewish People can celebrate Israel as the country to come to by choice, not just as a refuge from adversity.”Shultz, who is also President of the Am Yisrael Foundation, pointed out that "for thousands of years, Aliyah has been the motivating force for Jews who never gave up the dream of Jewish self-determination and independence, and thanks to the Olim that came before, today is the easiest time in history for a Jew to live on the Land of Israel."Speaking about the importance of the bill, Shultz remarked "as the only ancient people that have been exiled and made the momentous return to their ancestral Homeland, we have a lot to rejoice about. This bill of national celebration will help us do just that, and I look forward to Jewish diaspora communities around the world joining us. Not just because supporting Israel is a responsibility, but because it is a noble honor.”

34% of Hungarians Blame 'Jewish Conspiracy' for Economic Woes-Far right Jobbik party gaining strength in Hungary but Jewish organization says anti-Semitism was worse in 2010.-By Yoni Kempinski, Budapest-First Publish: 3/24/2014, 1:48 PM-iSRAELNATIONALNEWS

A survey carried out by TEV, the umbrella organization for combating anti-Semitism in Hungary, points to a slight decrease in the level of anti-Semitism in the country, even as the right-wing party Jobbik gains strength in Hungary. TEV includes representatives of all parts of the country's Jewish population. In the survey, Hungarians were asked about their attitudes toward the country's Jews. The results were presented in a comprehensive study that analyzed the results based on various social cross-sections.The organization noted that the anti-Semitic wave was at its peak in 2010. At that time, 22% of Hungary's population was identified as actively anti-Semitic, and another 22% were identified as supporting anti-Semitic principles and harboring prejudice against Jews.In 2013, 17% of the populace were identified as actively anti-Semiticm and 23% as “moderately anti-Semitic.”TEV noted that the percentage of “moderate” anti-Semites has not changed, and that more than one third of the population still holds some kind of anti-Semitic views.Among the questions asked was “Do Jews have too much influence in Hungary today?” – to which 27% responded positively. A full 34% agreed that there is “a secret Jewish conspiracy behind political and economic processes.”The survey results were presented at a conference of the Center of European Rabbis and the Federation of Jewish Organizations in the EU, which is taking place in Budapest.

How to thwart terrorism at 29,000 feet, by the only pilot who ever did-As the hunt goes on for MH370, Uri Bar-Lev recalls how he saved his El Al passengers from an attempted skyjacking, and says other pilots should have been trained to do the same — on 9/11 and in countless other cases-By Mitch Ginsburg March 24, 2014, 2:14 pm 3-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

With the world waiting for word of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, a retired El Al pilot, a veteran of five armed hijacking attempts and plots, including one movie-worthy standoff at 29,000 feet, splashed some local brandy into his afternoon tea.“When you don’t know, you just don’t know,” Uri Bar-Lev said of the fate of the missing airliner, which dropped off the radar two weeks ago. Then, while he was folding the Hebrew paper, which was splayed open to the MH370 story of the day, came an endearingly familiar routine, the ritual dance performed by so many Israelis of Bar-Lev’s 1948 generation: Why do you want to hear this story? What’s so special about it? It’s been told before. Haven’t you read it? Why would people want to hear it now? The Times of Israel mentioned the missing plane and hinted at his heroics. We said there might be a lesson to be learned or simply a tale worth re-telling. He waved his hand dismissively, but, fresh from Pilates and in a rush to finish his chores before setting off for Chile the next day to visit a newborn grandson, the 83-year-old pilot agreed to deliver the abridged version of events. On September 6, 1970, Bar-Lev, who had flown as a 16-year-old in the 1948 War of Independence and later during the 1956 War, was picked up from his Amsterdam hotel and brought to Schiphol airport to fly the second leg of El Al Flight 219 from Tel Aviv to New York. Before take-off, El Al’s security officer on duty at the airport told the pilot that there were four suspicious people seeking to board the flight. Two held Senegalese passports with consecutive numbers; two others, a couple, carried less suspicious looking Honduran passports, but all had ordered their tickets at the last minute.Bar-Lev, in consultation with the security officer, barred the Senegalese passengers from boarding and demanded that the local security officers closely inspect the two Honduran nationals before allowing them to board.Although at the time he did not know that no such inspection had been performed, he stopped at seat 2C and had a chat with Avihu Kol, one of the two armed security officers on the plane. “I told him, I want you in the cockpit with me,” Bar-Lev said.Kol was alone in first class. He might as well have been wearing a sign that said air marshal. “Someone could just come up behind him and shoot him in the head,” Bar-Lev said, recalling that Kol had warned him about just such a scenario two weeks before.Uri Bar-Lev at his home on Moshav Avihayil (photo credit: Mitch Ginsburg/ Times of Israel)

Skyjackings were not a new phenomenon. During the previous year alone, dozens of planes had been hijacked. Yet El Al was the only airline in the world to field armed guards and re-enforced steel cockpit doors — precautions that had been put in place after the 1968 hijacking of an El Al jet to Algeria, the only time Israel’s national carrier has been hijacked. Kol, though, initially resisted Bar-Lev’s demand that he sit in the cockpit, saying it contradicted his orders. Finally, Bar-Lev pulled rank.At 29,000 feet, with the plane still climbing, the emergency light flashed in the cockpit. False alarm, one of the crew members said. It happened often. Flight attendants sometimes grazed against the warning panels, sounding the alarm. “No,” Bar-Lev responded, “we’re being hijacked.”Seconds later a flight attendant’s voice came through the intercom: two people, armed with a gun and two grenades, wanted to enter the cockpit. If he didn’t open the door, they would blow up the plane.Bar-Lev sent flight engineer Uri Zach to look through the peep hole. The “Honduran” man, Nicaraguan-American Sandinista supporter Patrick Argüello, a former Fulbright scholar operating on behalf of George Habash’s Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), was holding a gun to a female flight attendant’s head. Uri, she said to the pilot through the locked door, they are going to kill me if you don’t open up.According to the International Air Transport Association rules, Bar-Lev said, a pilot is responsible “for the welfare of his passengers” and therefore must acquiesce to the demands of terrorists. His thinking was just the opposite: acceding will only further endanger the passengers. Giving voice to an unformed thought, he said aloud, “We are not going to be taken hostage.”Sitting in the right-hand seat, having let the co-pilot handle the take-off from Amsterdam, Bar-Lev recalled his mandatory training on the Boeing 707 at the company headquarters several years earlier. The certification training was eight hours long. After six hours, the company instructor told Bar-Lev he was cleared to fly and wondered if he had any other questions. He did. He wanted to know the outer limits of the plane’s capacity. The instructor, a Korean War vet, walked him through some of the maneuvers and explained that the passenger plane was very strong and could endure more than it would seem at first glance.

The plane began to plummet, dropping 10,000 feet in a minute

Bar-Lev told Kol, the air marshal, to hold on tight. He was going to throw the plane into a dive. The negative g-force, akin to the feeling one gets on the downhill section of a roller coaster ride, would accomplish two things: it would lower the plane’s altitude, reducing the pressure difference between the inside and outside of the plane, which would make a bullet hole or a grenade explosion less dangerous; and it would throw the hijackers off their feet. The passengers, he said, were all belted in and would be fine.Bar-Lev lifted the nose of the aircraft, dipped one of the wings, and then tilted the nose down to earth. The plane began to plummet, dropping 10,000 feet in a minute. When he pulled out of the dive, Kol charged through the door and killed Argüello. The second terrorist, Leila Khaled, a Palestinian veteran of previous skyjackings, rolled a grenade forward but it didn’t explode. In her memoir, Bar-Lev said, Khaled claimed to have been violently subdued, but the air marshals found her passed out from the dive and quickly arrested her.But it was far from over. Three other planes, in what Bar-Lev called a more complex attack than 9-11, had been hijacked. The two men carrying Senegalese passports had commandeered a Pan Am flight and flown it to Egypt. TWA and Swiss Air flights were flown to Jordan. The Shin Bet, via an El Al dispatcher, sent Bar-Lev a terse command: About face. Come home.On board he had two armed Shin Bet officers — Kol, and a second agent who was at the back of the plane — plus a dead man and an internationally wanted terrorist. Pivotally, though, he also learned that Shlomo Vider, the chief flight attendant, had charged the hijackers and been shot several times. Before responding to the Shin Bet’s orders – Bar-Lev didn’t know and wasn’t told about the other hijackings – he called for a doctor to come forward and examine Vider. The most qualified person was a dentist. He ruled that Vider was in stable condition. “I didn’t think so, though,” said Bar-Lev. Vider was pale and though he had been shot, he didn’t seem to be bleeding out, raising concerns about internal bleeding. Bar-Lev told Tel Aviv that Vider didn’t have five hours left in him. He was going to request permission to land in London.Headquarters again ordered him to return to Israel, but Bar-Lev contacted the British authorities and began to descend. En route, he heard the voice of an El Al pilot preparing to take off from Heathrow to Israel. “I told him to switch to the internal frequency,” Bar-Lev said.Speaking quickly and in Hebrew, he told the other pilot the situation and the plan: he would land near him. In the commotion, no one would notice if the two armed Shin Bet marshals slipped through the flight engineer’s maintenance door between the wheels and quickly boarded the Israel-bound plane in the same way. The last thing he needed was for the two to be arrested by the local authorities and possibly charged for killing Argüello.    He insisted that he had simply flown the plane throughout and did not know how the Nicaraguan terrorist had died. Bar-Lev had good reason for concern. In February 1969 a Shin Bet air marshal named Mordechai Rachamim had fought off a squad of terrorists attacking an El Al plane in Zurich. After jumping out of the airplane door under fire, apprehending three of the terrorists and killing the fourth, the Swiss authorities, before finally exonerating him, first put him on trial for manslaughter. After Bar-Lev slowed the plane to a stop, the crew welcomed an emergency British medical team on board. Vider, he later learned, reached the local hospital an estimated five minutes from death. But when Bar-Lev tried to close the door and head back to Tel Aviv, several armed agents from the British secret services drew their sidearms and said, “Do not shut that door. You are on the soil of Great Britain.”Bar-Lev and the rest of the crew were taken for interrogation. Asked what he told the British authorities, he said, “I told them nothing.” He insisted that he had simply flown the plane throughout and did not know how the Nicaraguan terrorist had died.An El Al security officer, in the meanwhile, printed tickets for the two Shin Bet air marshals who had slipped onto the Israel-bound flight and, after going through the passenger list repeatedly, the British authorities were forced to let the plane take off.Bar-Lev and the crew were released the following day. The British authorities knew they were lying but could find no proof. Leila Khaled remained in the United Kingdom. She was let out of British custody three weeks later, after a British jet was hijacked on September 9, en route from Bahrain, expressly in order to secure her release. For Bar-Lev, though, the ordeal was still not over. Upon return to Israel, a man he did not recognize took him into a side room and began asking questions: Why had he insisted on bringing the sky marshal into the cockpit? Why had he refused a direct order to return to Tel Aviv? Why had he dismissed the dentist’s assessment? The next day, El Al Director General Mordechai Ben-Ari told him that the Shin Bet would not provide security for Israel’s national air carrier so long as he remained an active pilot. Ben-Ari tried to convince him to take a year off, to pacify the Shin Bet, and then return to service.

“In those days, though,” Bar-Lev said, “you could still call the prime minister.”

He phoned Golda Meir and asked to explain his side of the story. After giving his version of events to Meir, Moshe Dayan and the head of the Shin Bet at the time, he was given a two-week holiday and then reinstated, with honors for bravery.Several months after that, then-transportation minister Shimon Peres helped pass a new law that gave pilots the right to resist hijackings and immunity against foreign lawsuits, such as the one Pan Am filed against Bar-Lev for not alerting the airline to the danger posed by the two Senegalese men and the one the British authorities briefly pursued – to charge Bar-Lev as an accomplice to murder.Today, though, he said, despite the thousands of deaths caused by airline terror since that day in September 1970, there is still not a consensus among airlines that pilots are part of the inner circle of protection against terror. Lamenting the tragedy of 9/11, and the way 2,977 innocent people were killed by 19 hijackers wielding household objects such as penknives, he said the “formula for prevention” is for the crew to be trained, in mind more than in body, to resist.“As long as you know you’re not going to allow it to happen, then you’ll find the way,” he said.Read more: How to thwart terrorism at 29,000 feet, by the only pilot who ever did | The Times of Israel http://www.timesofisrael.com/how-to-defeat-airplane-terrorists-from-the-only-pilot-who-ever-foiled-a-skyjacking/#ixzz2wt9iF9y1-Follow us: @timesofisrael on Twitter | timesofisrael on Facebook

THE MISSING PLANE MH370 SITUATION AT 1:30PM SUN MAR 23,2014

NOW THE PROPAGANDIST SCIUTTO ON CNN IS TRYING TO DISCREDIT THE NORTH KIDNAPPING BY SAYING NOW THEY DID NOT PROGRAM THE PLANE TO GO A CERTAIN AREA.AND NOW CNN HAS THAT MARY CONVINCED THAT WE SHOULD BE JUST LOOKING TO THE OCEAN THEORY ALSO.

MY KIDNAPPING THEORY HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE PROGRAMING OF THE PLANE.MY THEORY SAYS THE PILOTS DROVE THE PLANE TO THE NORTH.AND THE DRONE NOT THE PLANE WAS PRE-ROGRAMED TO GO TO THE INDIAN OCEAN.MY THEORY IS THE DRONE WAS UNDER THE 370-THEN THE PILOTS.DROVE THE PLANE WITH THE KIDNAPPED CITIZENS TO THE NORTH AFTER ALL THE WIRING WAS SOMEHOW DISCONNECTED.THEN THE AUTO PILOT ON THE DRONE NOT THE PLANE WAS PRE-PROGRAMMED TO GO TO THE INDIAN OCEAN.TO DISTRACT SO THE PILOTS EITHER HIGHJACKED OR WILLINGLY TOOK THE PLANE TO THE INDONESIA-BANGLEDESH AREA.AND THE DRONE WENT TO THE INDIAN OCEAN FOR THE DISTRACTION.

THE MISSING PLANE MH370 SITUATION AT 7:00PM SUN MAR 23,2014

WE HAVE A NEW DEVELOPEMENT IN THE MISSING PLANE.NOW THERE SAYING THE PLANE DECENDED TO AS LOW AS 12,00 FEET AFTER THE LEFT TURN.WELL THIS WOULD FIT MY DRONE THEORY.

THE DRONE IS UNDER THE MH370 AS THE SCHEME GETS SET.I STILL THINK THE PILOTS ARE INVOLVED.THE PILOTS GET THE DRONE ON AUTO PILOT REMOTE CONTROL AND PRESET THE DRONE TO GO TO THE INDIAN OCEAN..THEN AS THEPILOTS SOMEHOW DISMANTLE ALL THE WIRE COMPONENTS ON MH370 SO IT CAN NOT BE READ OR HEAR OF.THEN AS THE PILOTS DRIVE OFF TO THE NORTH MUSLIM COUNTRIES SOMEWHERE WITH THE KIDNAPPED VICTIMS.THE DRONE QUICKLY ASENDS DOWN TO 12,000 FEET-THEN GOES UP TO 30,000 FEET GRADUALLY AND DOES THE DISTRACTION SCHEME ON ITS WAY TO TRAVEL THE INDIAN OCEAN.

THE MISSING PLANE MH370 SITUATION AT 8:00PM SUN MAR 23,2014

DID THE PILOTS TRAIN AT THESE TWO SITES.TO MAKE THE KIDNAPPING LOOK LIKE A DISASTER HAPPENED IN THE COCKPIT.AND IF THERE WAS SOME DRONE TRAINING PLACE IN THE AREA YET.WE COULD HAVE THE SENARIO IN PLACE WERE THE PILOTS COULD TRAIN FOR THE WHOLE SENARIO.AS WELL AS DO THE WHOLE TRAINING SENARIO ON HIS SIMULATOR.

Israel Air Force Christens Hermes 900 UAV 4
By IsraeliMoD on Friday, March 21st, 2014--defence talk

The Hermes 900 UAV, manufactured by the Israeli company Elbit Systems, received its official Hebrew name in the Israel Air Force (IAF): “Kochav” (star in Hebrew). The Kochav UAV strengthens the UAV arm of the IAF and is designed for HALE (High Altitude Long Endurance) reconnaissance missions.

The UAV arm of the IAF continues to expand: this week, a Hebrew name for the “Hermes 900″ UAV was chosen: “Kochav” (star, in Hebrew). The Israeli-built UAV serves at the Palmachim airbase and takes part in all kinds of reconnaissance missions and special missions. The Kochav UAV, which is manufactured by the Israeli company Elbit System, has joined the UAV Division of the IAF. It possesses a wide range of capabilities, including the ability to carry out missions in all weather conditions. The Kochav has innovative UAV capabilities: automatic takeoff, landing and braking capabilities. Additionally, it has another operational advantage over older aircraft, as it can carry multiple payloads, allowing it to perform several missions during a single flight.

Drone Warfare Is Why We Can’t Find Malaysian Airlines Flight 370
GEOINT Drones-Defence one-Patrick Tucker March 20, 2014
The long and frustrating hunt for missing Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 might be a sign of what’s to come, thanks to our growing obsession with drone imagery at the expense of the quaint technology of satellite radar data. While today’s high-resolution image satellites can take very detailed pictures of relatively small areas, old-fashioned radar satellites are the best solution for finding lost objects at sea, says Kurt Schwoppe, manager for imagery solutions for the company Esri. Radar satellites don’t see the world. Rather they get a sense of objects in somewhat the same way that a bat does. As bats use sonar to bounce signals off of prey to determine the location of targets and other objects, radar satellites take detailed scans of the planet by bouncing electromagnetic signals off the earth’s surface. Military officials won’t publicly disclose what assets they are using in the search for the missing aircraft. But militarily speaking, these sorts of satellites were great for seeing over large areas where there was cloud cover or finding ghost ships that had turned off their transponders. They’re also useful for spotting anomalies at sea.

“If there’s any oil slick that stands out well because there’s these flat dark spots where there are no wave ripples at all. If there’s an angular thing, like maybe a wing floating on the surface or some type of debris, that stuff stands out brightly” says Schwoppe. It’s a technology that NASA led in the development of in the 1970s. Today, space-based radar is an area where other countries are out-innovating the United States, at least commercially. The main private players are AirBus and a Canadian public-private program called RADARSAT (which includes Lockheed Martin but is run out of Canada by MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates or MDA). “From a commercial company standpoint, we have not flown a radar satellite ourselves,” says Schwoppe. That’s a problem because the U.S. continues to rely more on commercial satellites for our imaging data. “Right now to buy this data from the Canadians or the Europeans is just very, very expensive. So then it never gets acquired,” says Schwoppe. “The U.S. has invested a lot in this technology and the question is, can we get some of these commercial vendors up and start making a commercial business out of this and get it more and more readily available for different use cases. It seems we’re great at developing technology. Then others adopt it and put it to good use and for us it sits on the shelf a little bit.”Lagging space-based radar imaging has bitten us before. During the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010, in which 4.9 million barrels of oil were leaked into the Gulf of Mexico, high-resolution satellites took volumes of pictures but could not get a comprehensive sense of the entire spill area. The RADARSAT II satellite, conversely, was able to provide daily coverage of the entire area.  You think the U.S. would have learned. To understand how the U.S. got to this point, consider the last decade’s evolution of reconnaissance tools. In Afghanistan and Iraq, we brought high-resolution satellite imagery to bear on the task of getting snap shots, at a resolution as fine as 50 cm, of insurgents hiding among the dusty hills of the Pakistan border. Today, high-resolution satellite imagery is playing a role in the search for Flight 370. U.S. company Digital Globe has opened up its image satellites to aid in the search and launched a crowdsource campaign to enlist volunteers to analyze the images. “Users can go to Tomnod, and zoom in on each satellite image from DigitalGlobe’s satellite constellation and drop a pin if they see signs of wreckage. Its algorithm, CrowdRank, will find where there is overlap in the tags from people who tagged the same location. Then, DigitalGlobe’s expert analysts will examine the tags to identify the top 10 or so most notable areas and share the information with customers and authorities,” a company official explained, in an email. But the crowdsourced solution may not be ideal and can produce false positives, as evinced by the singer Courtney Love’s fleeting but ebullient conviction that she had found the phantom Malaysian flight based on satellite imagery.Schwoppe is skeptical of the tactic. The necessity of crowdsourcing speaks to the fact that high-resolution imagery doesn’t offer wide enough coverage. DigitalGlobe’s satellites can only see an area that’s 18 kilometers wide. RADARSAT’s synthetic aperture radar can cover 500 kilometers.U.S. reliance on high-resolution imaging is surpassed only by the military obsession with unmanned areal vehicles or UAVs, which have proven relatively useless in the current search for Flight 370. UAVs were an ideal solution for an environment like Afghanistan or Iraq where the military wanted the ability to follow a target from house to house to roadside, or perhaps loiter over a key area where insurgents might be gathering. “From a tactical perspective in actually fighting ground operations, UAVs were extremely powerful and they met that niche,” Schwoppe observed. “We had the luxury to do that because we totally controlled the airspace over Iraq and Afghanistan and you know we won’t have that same luxury in other areas.”As previously mentioned, the most-recent budget request cuts spending for Navy satellite communications to $41,829,000 from $66,196,000 and the Navy Satellite Control Network $20,806,000 from $35,657,000.Schwoppe believes that military spending on radar satellites is probably safe, but can’t be sure. “I can tell you, the reconnaissance community understands and knows the value of radar, especially as targets change.” But he acknowledges that broader cuts in military satellite programs are disturbing. Also, European and Canadian groups have found civilian uses for radar technology in environmental monitoring, another area where the U.S. lags.If the U.S. and allies don’t give this old technology some better attention, the next Flight 370 might be even harder to find.

French images show possible debris from jetliner-By ROB GRIFFITH and SCOTT McDONALD 5 minutes ago-mar 23,14-yAHOONEWS
PERTH, Australia (AP) — France provided new satellite images Sunday showing possible debris from the missing Malaysia Airlines jet, Malaysian officials said, as searchers combing a remote part of the southern Indian Ocean tried to locate a pallet that could be a key clue in solving one of the world's great aviation mysteries. The imagery given to Malaysia's government and forwarded to searchers in Australia "show potential objects" in the same part of the ocean where previous satellite images released by Australia and China showed objects that could be debris from the plane, Malaysia's Ministry of Transport said in a statement.Flight 370 went missing over the Gulf of Thailand on March 8 with 239 people on board en route from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Beijing, setting off a multinational search effort that has turned up nothing conclusive so far on what happened to the jet.The French satellite images themselves had not been released or described by Malaysia, France or Australia hours after the announcement of their existence. In an emailed statement, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority declined to offer details about what they showed or where the objects were located and did not respond to multiple requests by The Associated Press for access to the images."Any satellite images or other new information that comes to AMSA is being considered in developing the search plans," the agency said. But a Malaysian official involved in the search mission said the images were captured Friday and pinpointed objects about 930 kilometers (575 miles) north of the spots where the objects in the images released by Australia and China were located. One of the objects in the French imagery was estimated to be about the same size as an object captured Tuesday by the Chinese satellite that appeared to be 22 meters (72 feet) by 13 meters (43 feet), said the official, who declined to be identified because he isn't authorized to speak to the media. But the official said the French satellite image was unclear and fuzzy, making it difficult to determine precise dimensions.Information about the fresh images emerged as authorities coordinating the search, which is being conducted about 2,500 kilometers (1,550 miles) southwest of Perth, sent planes and a ship to try to "re-find" a wooden pallet that appeared to be surrounded by straps of varying lengths and colors. It was spotted Saturday by spotters in a search plane, but no images were captured of it and a military PC Orion military plane dispatched to locate the pallet could not find it."So, we've gone back to that area again today to try and re-find it," said Mike Barton, chief of the Australian Maritime Safety Authority's rescue coordination center. An Australian navy ship was also involved in the search.Wooden pallets are commonly used in shipping, but can also be used in cargo containers carried on planes.AMSA said the aircraft that spotted the pallet was unable to take photos of it."We went to some of the expert airlines and the use of wooden pallets is quite common in the industry," Barton said. "They're usually packed into another container, which is loaded in the belly of the aircraft. ... It's a possible lead, but we will need to be very certain that this is a pallet because pallets are used in the shipping industry as well."Sam Cardwell, a spokesman for AMSA, said the maritime agency had requested a cargo manifest from Malaysia Airlines, but he was unsure whether it had been received as of Sunday night.Malaysia Airlines asked The Associated Press to submit questions via email for comment on whether Flight 370 had wooden pallets aboard when it disappeared. The airline had not responded by Sunday night. When Brazilian searchers in 2009 were looking for debris from Air France Flight 447 after it mysteriously plunged into the Atlantic Ocean, the first thing they found was a wooden pallet. The military first reported that the pallet came from the Air France flight, but then said six hours later that the plane had not been carrying any wooden pallets.
Eight planes took part in Sunday's search, with most involving spotters peering out the windows and looking for signs of debris."Today is really a visual search again, and visual searches take some time. They can be difficult," said John Young, manager of AMSA's emergency response division. The southern Indian Ocean is thought to be a potential area to find the jet because Malaysian authorities have said pings sent by the Boeing 777-200 for several hours after it disappeared indicated that the plane ended up in one of two huge arcs: a northern corridor stretching from Malaysia to Central Asia, or a southern corridor that stretches toward Antarctica.Malaysian authorities have not ruled out any possible explanation for what happened to the jet, but have said the evidence so far suggests it was deliberately turned back across Malaysia to the Strait of Malacca, with its communications systems disabled. They are unsure what happened next.Authorities are considering the possibilities of hijacking, sabotage, terrorism or issues related to the mental health of the pilots or anyone else on board.___McDonald reported from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Russia to Europe: We can do whatever we want
22.03.14 @ 18:32-By Valentina Pop-EU OBSERVER

Brussels - Foreign policy debates are usually a polite affair. Ideas may clash, but the exchange rarely gets personal. This was not the case on Friday (21 March) during the "Brussels Forum", an annual gathering of European and American politicians and experts, including the Russian ambassadors to the EU and Nato. The Estonian President, Toomas Ilves, complained about the EU "sitting and watching" while Russia annexed Crimea and giving Moscow "a minor slap on the wrist" by blacklisting a few dozen people, a reaction which Russia "laughed at."The Italian foreign minister, Federica Mogherini, who was defending the EU decisions, snapped: "So let's bomb Russia? What is the solution?"Ilves retorted: “We should begin defending ourselves, because once you start going in this direction [annexation of territories], what possible intellectual reasoning could say 'this won't continue'?"The Russian ambassador to the EU, Vladimir Chizhov, defended what he called the Russian "intervention" in Crimea, saying the crisis had started earlier, when Ukraine slipped into "deep political and economic problems" and risked turning into a "failed state."Ilves said Chizov was being "disingenous," because "you can't destabilise a country and then express concern that it's a failed state."Mikheil Saakashvili, the former president of Georgia at the time of Russia’s last “intervention,” its 2008 invasion, said he had "no respect" for Chizov, who reminded him of a character from Dr Strangelove, a Cold War satire directed by Stanley Kubrick in 1964.On a separate panel, Nato secretary general Anders Fogh Rasmussen cornered the Russian ambassador to Nato, asking why Russia is not respecting the international principle it subscribed to in 1999 - that each country has a right to freely decide on its international alliances."This is true, but there is also the international law enshrining the principle of indivisibility of security. Nobody will improve their security at the expense of the security of others. Nato is free to take any decision. And Russia is free to take any decision to protect its legitimate security interest," the Russian ambassador, Alexander Grushko, said."From the beginning, we said that if Nato will go on with enlargement, it will continue producing new dividing lines, moving dividing lines towards the Russian borders. We also said that in some cases, these dividing lines will cross inside countries. It's up to you if you listen or not," he added.Rasmussen continued his grilling: "Would you accept Georgia's right to choose Nato membership if this is a Georgian deision and if Nato accepts that? Would you accept that?"Grushko replied: "We are against, we believe that this is a huge mistake. This is the position of my country."

The Russian ambassador also said that instead of focusing on "how to show its muscles" militarily, Europe should focus on the rights of Russians in the Baltic states, where hundreds of thousands are denied citizenship "just because they speak Russian.""I think it would be a better solution than to send US [missile defence] interceptors,” he noted.Meanwhile, senior figures who had dealt with Russian leader Vladimir Putin during their career warned of the consequences of letting him get away with the annexation of Crimea. With Putin knowing that Nato will not go to war over Ukraine or Georgia because they are not members of the alliance, Former Nato chief Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said Moldova may be next on Putin's list."Let's not forget Moldova, because the next stop might really be Transnistria," he said. The former ambassador of the US to Nato, Kurt Volker, warned that the dismemberment of Ukraine sets a terrible precedent after it unilterally gave up its nuclear arsenal."After Russia's incursion in Ukraine, no country will give up nuclear weapons in return for territorial guarantees," Volker said.In the aftermath of the Soviet Union's collapse, in 1991, the newly independent Ukraine had on its territory the world's third largest nuclear arsenal, larger than those of Britain, France, and China combined.Five years later, it handed over all its nuclear warheads to Russia for dismantling, after having signed a memorandum in Budapest with the UK, Russia, and the US pledging to respect Ukraine's territorial integrity.US President Barack Obama did tell Putin he is in violation of this Budapest memorandum. But both Washington and London are excluding the "military option" in reaction to Russia's actions in Ukraine.Contacts say the furthest they might go is arming the Ukrainian military, which according to its foreign minister, is preparing to defend itself in case of attacks beyond Crimea.

Obama's Europe ties get new test in Russia dispute
By JULIE PACE 18 hours ago-mar 22,14-YAHOONEWS

Putin Completes Annexation of Crimea

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama's complex relationship with Europe faces new challenges during a weeklong trip as he tries to persuade allied leaders to hold firm in efforts to punish Russia for its incursion into Ukraine. The deepening dispute between East and West is expected to dominate his visit to Europe, which begins Monday in the Netherlands. The four-country trip was long-planned, but now provides the U.S. and Europe a well-timed chance to present a united front against Russian President Vladimir Putin. But behind the scenes, Obama will be gauging how far the still economically shaky European Union is willing to go in punishing Russia, one of its largest trading partners. He'll also be confronted with other European frustrations with the U.S. that are bubbling just below the surface. Some European officials, chief among them German Chancellor Angela Merkel, are still smarting over revelations of National Security Agency spying on the continent. There's also lingering resentment among EU leaders over what it sees as Obama's snubbing of the alliance."There's an anger there, there's a frustration there," said Heather Conley, a Europe expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. She added that while the Ukraine crisis may "mute" some of Europe's irritation with Obama, "it doesn't solve it."In the Netherlands, Obama will join world leaders at the Nuclear Security Summit and head a hastily arranged meeting of the Group of Seven - the U.S., Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan. The latter meeting will focus on boosting financial support for Ukraine's fledgling government, while also serving as a symbol of the West's efforts to isolate Moscow. Russia often joins the G-7 nations for Group of Eight meetings, including a summit Putin is supposed to host this summer. Those plans are now in doubt.

Russia is participating in the nuclear summit, but Putin will not attend. He's sending Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to The Hague.Obama's focus on Ukraine will continue in Brussels, the headquarters for the EU and NATO. A later stop in Rome will feature a highly anticipated meeting with Pope Francis. Then it's on to Saudi Arabia for a fence-mending visit with the important Gulf ally.Initial punishments from the U.S. and EU did little stop Russia from annexing the Crimean Peninsula from Ukraine. Western officials are now warily watching Russia build up its troop presence elsewhere along the former Soviet state's border.Russian officials say those troops are simply participating in military exercises. But Obama's national security adviser, Susan Rice, said that given Russia's "past practice and the gap between what they have said and what they have done, we are watching it with skepticism."The U.S. has warned that further Russian incursions could result in broader penalties targeting the Russian economy, including its robust energy sector. But administration officials acknowledge that American sanctions wouldn't have the same kind of bite as European penalties, given Europe's deeper economic ties with Russia. That puts Obama in the position of seeking cooperation from the sometimes unwieldy EU, the 28-country bloc that has often bristled at what its leaders see as snubs by the American president. The president has skipped over Brussels on all eight of his previous trips to Europe as president. He ended the practice of holding U.S-EU summits annually, preferring to hold meetings instead with individual European leaders. On the rare occasions when he has attended EU summits, the meetings have been brief and yielded little of consequence."They know the president can't stand sitting in these meetings," Conley said of EU leaders. "They got that message very clearly."The NSA spying disclosures have strained Obama's relations with Europe, particularly with Merkel, the leader with whom he had perhaps the closest relationship. Last year's explosive leaks from NSA contractor Edward Snowden included a revelation that the U.S. was monitoring Merkel's cellphone.Former State Department official Jeremy Shapiro said that while anger over the NSA persists, Europe's leaders are unlikely to get let that matter bleed into discussions over Ukraine."Ukraine is too serious an issue for them." said Shapiro, now a fellow at the Brookings Institution. "Russia is too serious an issue for them. And the need to work with the United States is too serious an issue to complicate it with this type of thing."The crisis in Ukraine seems likely to overshadow what had been expected to be the most-attention grabbling stops of Obama's trip - meetings with Pope Francis at the Vatican and Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah in Riyadh.Obama has praised the new pontiff and sees a connection with Francis' recent statements on income inequality, an issue the president is pushing at home.Hot-button issues in the Middle East will dominate Obama's stop in Saudi Arabia, his second visit to the kingdom as president. During meetings with the king, Obama will seek to alleviate the Gulf nation's concerns over U.S. nuclear negotiations with Iran and the White House's tepid role in quelling the Syrian civil war.___Associated Press writer Jim Kuhnhenn contributed to this report.Follow Julie Pace at http://twitter.com/jpaceDC

NATO commander warns of Russian threat to separatist Moldova region
By Adrian Croft 57 minutes ago-MAR 23,14-YAHOONEWS-By Adrian Croft

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - NATO's top military commander said on Sunday that Russia had a large force on Ukraine's eastern border and he was worried it could pose a threat to Moldova's separatist Transdniestria region. The warning comes a day after Russian troops, using armored vehicles, automatic weapons and stun grenades, seized the last military facilities under Ukrainian control in Crimea, the Black Sea peninsular that Russian President Vladimir Putin formally annexed on Friday."The (Russian) force that is at the Ukrainian border now to the east is very, very sizeable and very, very ready," NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Europe, U.S. Air Force General Philip Breedlove, told an event held by the German Marshall Fund think-tank.Russia's seizure of Crimea, which has a majority Russian population, after the ousting of Ukraine's pro-Russian president by mass protests has triggered the worst East-West crisis since the Cold War.The United States and the European Union have targeted some of Putin's closest political and business allies with personal sanctions and have threatened broader economic sanctions if Putin's forces encroach on other eastern or southern parts of Ukraine with big Russian-speaking populations.Breedlove said NATO was very concerned about the threat to Transdniestria, which declared independence from Moldova in 1990 but has not been recognized by any United Nations member state. About 30 percent of its half million population is ethnic Russian, which is the mother tongue of an overall majority.Russia launched a new military exercise, involving 8,500 artillery men, near Ukraine's border 10 days ago."There is absolutely sufficient (Russian) force postured on the eastern border of Ukraine to run to Transdniestria if the decision was made to do that, and that is very worrisome," Breedlove said. The president of ex-Soviet Moldova warned Russia last Tuesday against considering any move to annex Transdniestria, which lies on Ukraine's western border, in the same way that it has taken control of Crimea. The speaker of Transdniestria's parliament had urged Russia earlier to incorporate the region.

"NO EXPANSIONIST VIEWS"

Russia's Deputy Defence Minister Anatoly Antonov was quoted by the state's Itar-Tass news agency on Sunday as saying that Russia was complying with international agreements limiting the number of troops near its border with Ukraine.Moscow's ambassador to the European Union, Vladimir Chizhov, also told Britain's BBC television on Sunday that Russia did not have any "expansionist views".Asked to give a commitment that Russian troops would not move into other Ukrainian territory outside the Crimea, Chizhov said: "There is no intention of the Russian Federation to do anything like that."U.S. Senator John McCain, a Republican foreign policy specialist, told the same BBC show that Putin's actions in Ukraine were akin to those of Adolf Hitler in 1930s Germany."I think he (Putin) is calculating how much he can get away with, just as Adolf Hitler calculated how much he could get away with in the 1930s," McCain said.McCain criticized the international response and said he supported sending military equipment to Ukraine. He also said he considered Moldova and the Baltic nations, all former Soviet states with sizeable Russian populations, to be under threat.U.S. President Barack Obama's national security adviser said on Friday that the world was reassessing its relationship with Russia and Washington was skeptical of Russian assurances that troop movements on the Ukraine border were no more than military exercises.

"BAD PRECEDENT"

Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko, a close ally of Russia, accepted on Sunday that Crimea was now "de facto" a part of Russia, but he criticized the annexation as a "bad precedent".Speaking to reporters in Minsk, Lukashenko said Ukraine, which shares a long land border with Belarus, should remain "a single, indivisible, integral, non-bloc state".Hopes that the limited sanctions measures in place might dissuade further incursions were dealt a blow on Sunday when Russia's SMP bank, whose main shareholders were targeted by U.S. sanctions, said Visa Inc and MasterCard Inc had resumed payment services for its clients. The bank said it was glad the two biggest international payments systems had listened to its arguments to reverse Friday's suspension of services as it was wrong to target the bank, which was not itself the target of any sanctions.Putin and Russian media had mocked the sanctions, which did not stop the Russian military completing its takeover of Ukraine's military bases in Crimea.Russia's defence ministry said on Sunday that its flag was now flying over 189 Ukrainian military installations on the peninsula.A referendum held a week ago after Russian troops had seized control of Crimea overwhelmingly backed union with Russia but was denounced by Washington and the European Union as a sham. The EU emphasized its support for the new pro-Western government in Kiev, signing a political agreement with interim Prime Minister Arseniy Yatseniuk last week. They also promised financial aid for the government - which Moscow says came to power by a coup to overthrow Russian ally Viktor Yanukovich - as soon as Kiev reaches a deal with the International Monetary Fund. The IMF is to report next Tuesday on advanced talks with Ukraine on a loan program that would be linked to far-reaching reforms of the shattered economy.Three months of protests were set off by Yanukovich's refusal to sign an association agreement with the EU, the political part of which was signed on Friday. Rome - A self-organised “referendum” over the independence of one of Italy’s wealthiest regions has resulted in an overwhelming victory for the separatist camp, but authorities in Rome have largely ignored the result, amid scepticism over the regularity of the informal, non-binding poll.Nevertheless, events in Veneto, the north-eastern region around Venice that is home to almost 5 million people, have attracted international attention, particularly from government-sponsored Russian media, keen to draw comparisons with the military-backed vote that sanctioned Moscow’s annexation of Crimea.Out of 3.8 million eligible voters, 2.3 million took part in Veneto’s independence “plebiscite,” organisers said Friday, after six days of voting through makeshift polling booths, via phone or the internet. The pro-secession camp was declared the winner with over 89 percent, against just under 11 percent for the unionists.“The Venetian Republic is born again,” the leader of the ‘yes’ camp, Gianluca Busato, exclaimed at a victory rally in Treviso, in front of a crowd of a few hundred supporters. However, before the results were announced, a programme on RAI state television had shown how easy it was for non-Veneto residents to take part in the online poll using fake names. On Sunday the La Stampa newspaper noted that voter turnout was remarkably high in a region where, according to national statistics, only 60 percent of the people use the internet.“Voting for Veneto’s independence was like clicking ‘like’ on Facebook,” Stefano Allievi, a sociology professor from Padua, told La Stampa. The organisers, for their part, said they weeded out almost 7,000 invalid votes from the final count, and said unspecified “international observers” monitored procedures.By smaller margins, participants in the poll indicated that an independent Veneto should remain a member of the European Union and NATO, and should stick to the euro as its currency. Only 51.4 percent of participants approved the latter choice. There was no official reaction from central authorities in Rome, but most commentators urged the government of Prime Minister Matteo Renzi to take seriously the signals of discontent coming from the region.Secessionists, who are not attached to any mainstream political party, see themselves as the heirs of the Most Serene Republic of Venice, the state that ruled the lagoon city and its surroundings for about 1,000 years, until it was routed by Napoleon in 1797.

Economic argument for independence

Their main argument for independence is economic. They calculate that Veneto subsidizes Italy’s inefficient central government and its poorer southern regions to the tune of €20 billion a year. They claim that an independent state – modeled on the likes of Catalonia or Scotland – would be far better off.“The right of self-determination that is triumphing in Veneto is the only way to free ourselves from the worst bureaucratic monster of the Western world. The blood-thirsty beast of the Italian state is hated by all of its subjects, everywhere,” Busato said. The 44-year-old software entrepreneur was elected as one of 10 “delegates” tasked with setting independence plans into motion.“The first objective is to keep all taxes in Veneto,” he said. “Veneto’s businesses and citizens no longer have to pay immoral and illegitimate taxes to the Italian state.”It remains to be seen how such propositions can be put into practice. In 1997, another independence bid from Rome ended in a farce. A commando of eight people in combat gear, armed with a WWII-era rifle and a truck disguised as a tank, highjacked a water ferry, landed on St Mark’s Square in Venice and occupied its bell tower. They were arrested by special police forces and jailed.“The media have painted us as a rag-army, but we are not so stupid,” Andrea Arman, a legal advisor for the secessionists, told the ANSA news agency. “It will be a peaceful change,” he insisted, predicting that independence would take “from a few months to one year” to be realized. The Northern League, the anti-immigrant party that once campaigned for the secession of the whole of northern Italy, welcomed the Veneto poll. Its leader, outgoing MEP Matteo Salvini, said a similar referendum should be held in nearby Lombardy, while separatists in Sardinia said they also wanted to follow suit.Luca Zaia, the Northern League governor of Veneto, said he would push the regional assembly to approve plans to convene an official independence referendum. But he admitted that there were “objective problems of compatibility” with Italy’s constitution, which states that the Republic is “one and indivisible”.

World leaders gather for Hague nuclear summit-By TOBY STERLING 2 hours ago-MAR 23,14-YAHOONEWS

AMSTERDAM (AP) — Nuclear terrorism is officially the main topic for world leaders at a two-day summit in the Netherlands starting Monday. In practice, the Ukraine crisis will likely overshadow those talks. The Nuclear Security Summit in the Hague will form the backdrop for an emergency meeting of Group of Seven leaders on Russia's annexation of Crimea. It's a confrontation between Russia and the West reminiscent of the Cold War.Russian President Vladimir Putin is not attending, instead sending Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who is expected to hold talks with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry. But experts say frantic diplomacy focused on Ukraine shouldn't divert from the goal of better security of nuclear material."International attention can turn in a moment," said Deepti Choubey, a senior director at the non-government Nuclear Threat Initiative. "The attentions of terrorists do not."Delegations from 53 countries, including the leaders of the U.S., China and Japan, have started to arrive in the Hague. They will meet to negotiate on reducing and securing supplies, and keeping them out of terrorists' hands. The G-7 includes the U.S., Britain, Germany, Japan, France, Italy and Canada.Notable absentees from the summit are North Korea and Iran, excluded by mutual consent. The summit is the third since US President Barack Obama launched the series in 2009 shortly after taking office, saying that reducing the risk of a terrorist attack with either a nuclear weapon or a "dirty bomb" was one of his most important international policy goals.Because countries usually regard protecting nuclear weapons and facilities as a confidential sovereign matter, the summits center on individual commitments by participants and conclude with a non-binding accord.
Still, they already have reached tangible results. The number of countries that possess enough highly enriched uranium or plutonium to make a bomb has fallen steadily, from 39 before the first conference in Washington in 2010 to 25 at the start of the Hague summit.Piet de Klerk, the Dutch diplomat who chaired negotiations before the summit, says a further large drop in numbers is unlikely. But he says The Hague closing accord will likely include a new commitment to reduce plutonium stores. That is particularly relevant for Japan, which owns a large plutonium stockpile even as it reevaluates its use of nuclear power in the wake of the 2011 Fukushima disaster.Additionally, the Netherlands, with help from the U.S. and South Korea, is weaving together all existing nuclear arms treaties, agreements and voluntary guidelines for military, industry and civilian use into a single package of "best practices" for nuclear security. The three host nations and an unknown number of others will vow to adhere to this package as much as possible.Kenneth Luongo, of the Partnership for Global Security, said that the willingness of countries to commit to "essentially what's already on the books" will act as a litmus test to show which countries are taking security seriously."I would hope that by 2016 everybody would be on board," he said. What's likely to be left for a final summit back in Washington in 2016 is a mechanism for countries to request a confidential independent review of their security practices, presumably conducted by the International Atomic Energy Agency. While Ukraine is likely to dominate diplomacy behind the scenes in The Hague, it already is a nuclear success story. The country voluntarily gave the nuclear weapons housed on its soil back to Russia after the collapse of the Soviet Union and following through on a 2010 summit promise, has recently disposed of its remaining stock of around 80 kilograms (176 pounds) of highly enriched uranium.Choubey of the NTI said that underlines the importance of the process."How much more concerned would the world be today (about the crisis in Ukraine) if that material were still there?" she said.

Israel promotes plans for 2,372 settler homes in the West Bank
-March 21, 2014 4:00 AM-YAHOONEWS

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel has promoted building plans for 2,372 homes in eight Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank in the past month, on land the Palestinians want for a future state, an anti-settlement watchdog has said. The plans, the largest of which is for 839 homes in the Ariel settlement bloc, are at different stages of approval but none has yet been given the final green light needed from the Defence Ministry, Israeli Peace Now said.Settlement expansion in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, which with the Gaza Strip make up the territory of the Palestinians' planned independent state, is a major stumbling block in the already faltering peace talks between the sides. An Israeli defense official said the plans were at the stage of "preliminary and basic discussions".A spokesman for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Nabil Abu Rdainah, said Israel was trying to derail the peace talks: "The Israelis are trying to push the talks to a dead end with this systematic escalation of continuing settlement activity."Palestinians say settlements, built on land Israel seized in the 1967 Middle East war and deemed illegal by the International Court of Justice, bar them from establishing a viable and contiguous state.Israel Peace Now said in a statement on Thursday the new building would "expand dramatically the settlements and ... pressure the Palestinians to resign from the current talks." It called on the government to stop "this wild behaviour."Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said this month his government would be prepared to give up "some settlements" in the West Bank to help secure a peace agreement but that he would limit as much as he could the number of enclaves removed. An Israeli government report, however, showed this month that construction starts on new settler homes had more than doubled last year. More than 500,000 Israelis have settled in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, areas that are home to about 2.8 million Palestinians.U.S.-brokered peace talks resumed in July, but the negotiations appear to be making no progress. Washington is struggling to formulate agreed principles that would extend the talks beyond an original April target date for a final deal.(Writing by Maayan Lubell; Editing by Tom Heneghan)

EU sees big gaps in nuclear talks but Iran 'commitment' to deal-By Fredrik Dahl March 20, 2014 12:55 PM-YAHOONEWS0-By Fredrik Dahl

VIENNA (Reuters) - Positions between Iran and world powers diverge widely in some areas but Iranian negotiators seem "very committed" to reach an agreement on the country's disputed nuclear program, a senior EU official said in an email seen by Reuters on Thursday.Russia, one of the six major powers seeking to persuade Iran to scale back its contested atomic activities to deny it any nuclear bomb breakout capability, separately said the two sides were "far apart" on the issue of uranium enrichment. The remarks underlined the uphill task confronting negotiators, who aim to hammer out a final settlement of the decade-old dispute over the nature and scope of Iran's nuclear program in the next four months. In a video message to mark the Iranian new year holiday Nowruz, U.S. President Barack Obama said there is a chance to reach a nuclear deal with Iran if it takes verifiable steps to assure the West the program is for peaceful purposes only."I'm under no illusions. This will be difficult," Obama said. "But I'm committed to diplomacy because I believe there is the basis for a practical solution."The brief email from European Union official Helga Schmid to senior officials of EU member states was written after a meeting between Iran and the United States, France, Germany, China, Russia and Britain in Vienna on Tuesday and Wednesday.Schmid is the deputy of EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, who is coordinating talks with Iran on behalf of the six nations. Tehran says its nuclear program is peaceful but the West fears it may be aimed at developing the capability to make atomic bombs and wants it curtailed. In this week's talks, Iran and the powers locked horns over the future of a planned Iranian nuclear reactor with the potential to produce plutonium for bombs, and the United States warned that "hard work" would be needed to overcome differences when the sides reconvene on April 7.

This line was echoed in Schmid's email.

"Since we are at an early stage of the final and comprehensive negotiations, we still have a lot of work ahead of us. On some areas, positions differ widely," it said."However, the impression is that the Iranian negotiators remain very committed to reach a comprehensive solution within the agreed 6-month period," Schmid added. She was referring to a late July deadline for a long-term deal agreed in an interim accord struck in November. The meeting in Vienna was the second in a series that the six nations hope will produce a verifiable settlement, ensuring Iran's nuclear program is oriented to peaceful purposes only, and lay to rest the risk of a new Middle East war.

IRAN HAPPY ABOUT TALKS

The two sides sought to spell out their positions on two of the thorniest issues: the level of uranium enrichment conducted in Iran, and its Arak heavy-water reactor. Iran denies Western suspicions that it could be a source of plutonium.Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammed Javad Zarif characterized the latest round of negotiations as "very successful" in terms of clarifying the issues involved, the Iranian official news agency IRNA reported."In terms of understanding and clarification, Vienna-2 was among our very successful round of talks ... extremely beneficial and constructive," it quoted Zarif as saying. But Russia's chief negotiator, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, made clear that major hurdles lie ahead, in comments reported by Interfax news agency. He said Iran and the powers agree that a solution should be based on November's preliminary agreement but that Iran had "very far-reaching demands" on enrichment, which can have both civilian and military purposes.

"The positions on this issue are far apart," Ryabkov said.

Under the interim accord, designed to buy time for talks on a long-term deal, Iran suspended higher-grade enrichment, a potential route to bomb-making, in exchange for some easing of sanctions that are battering its oil-dependent economy. But the powers want sharper cuts in Iran's overall enrichment capacity. The U.N. nuclear agency, which has inspectors on the ground, was expected later on Thursday to issue a monthly update to member states showing Iran is living up to its part of the November 24 agreement, diplomats in Vienna said.Ryabkov said that great attention was paid to "issues of restrictions on Iran's enrichment activity and on Iran's prospects for enrichment activity in general", Interfax reported. "This is a very serious issue, which is very labor-intensive and causes many disputes," he said. The next meeting of chief negotiators has been set for April 7-9, also in the Austrian capital. Expert-level talks will be held before then, officials say.The over-arching goal is to transcend mutual mistrust and give the West confidence that Iran will not be able to produce atomic bombs while Tehran - in return - would win full relief from economic and financial sanctions.Iran denies that its declared civilian atomic energy program is a front for developing the means to make nuclear weapons. But its restrictions on U.N. inspections and Western intelligence about bomb-relevant research have raised concerns.(Additional reporting by Steve Gutterman in Moscow, Mehrdad Balali in Dubai and Steve Holland in Washington, editing by Mark Heinrich)

Turkey: We Shot Down Syrian Jet-Action may be a government effort to gain political scores ahead of a local vote that is scheduled to take place on March 30.-By Gil Ronen-First Publish: 3/23/2014, 3:22 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan says Turkish F-16 fighter jets shot down a Syrian military jet which had violated its airspace Sunday. The incident reportedly took place near Yayladağı, a district of the southern Hatay province, in an area where Syrian rebels and government forces have been fighting for control of a border crossing.According to Turkey's Sunday Zaman, the shooting down of the jet may be a government effort to gain political scores ahead of a local vote that is scheduled to take place on March 30.Citing Turkish officials, NTV reported that Turkish air defense system shot down a Syrian warplane after its incursion to the Turkish territory. The incident came as Turkish government was mulling options to briefly intervene in Syria to protect the tomb of Süleyman Şah, the grandfather of the founder of the Ottoman Empire, whose security is provided by the Turkish troops as part of an agreement with the Syrian authorities.Concerns over a possible Turkish military intervention in Syria have been floated following news of clashes between an al-Qaeda splinter group and other Syrian opposition groups in the area. In response to these reports, Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu said Turkey will retaliate in the event of an attack on the tomb of Süleyman Şah irrespective of where the attack comes from.Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, leader of the main Turkish opposition party, the Republican People's Party (CHP), warned against any Turkish military incursion to Syria ahead of elections. According to the CHP leader, Erdoğan aims to divert public attention from a sweeping graft scandal that implicated the Erdoğan family.

Netanyahu Vows No Let Up in Counterterrorism Operations-In first statement following deadly Jenin raid last night, Prime Minister says Israel will continue to act in self-defense.By Ari Soffer and AFP First Publish: 3/23/2014, 1:34 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

Israeli Prime Binyamin Netanyahu vowed Sunday that the IDF would use force against anybody plotting attacks against the Jewish state, after troops killed two terrorists and a rioter during a raid in the Palestinian Authority-controlled city of Jenin."Over the weekend, our forces struck at a terrorist who had organised attacks on Israelis and was also planning attacks on innocent civilians," Netanyahu told ministers at the weekly cabinet meeting. "Our policy is to attack those who attack us and who are planning to attack us," the Prime Minister's Office quoted him as saying. "Both were applicable in this case." Israeli troops entered the Jenin refugee camp in Samaria (Shomron) on Saturday in what the army said was an operation to capture wanted Hamas terrorist Hamza Abu Alheja, 20. Clashes broke out resulting in the deaths of Abu Alheja, as well as another terrorist, Mahmud Abu Zena, 19, of the radical Islamic Jihad group. Also killed was Yazan Jabarin, who PA sources identified as a "civilian" but who was among dozens of rioters who hurled rocks, firebombs and other projectiles at security forces, and had links to the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades. The Palestinian Authority called a day of mourning and a general strike. Hamas, Islamic Jihad and the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, an armed offshoot of PA leader Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah movement, issued a rare joint statement vowing revenge and accusing Abbas's Palestinian Authority of complicity in the killings through its security cooperation with Israel. But Israeli army spokesman Peter Lerner defended the operation, saying that Abu Alheja was "a ticking bomb" who took part in shooting attacks and was in "advanced stages of the preparation of further attacks".

EU is Ignoring a Holocaust Against Christians,' Say Protesters-The West is turning a blind eye to what amounts to a genocide against Christians living in Muslim countries, said a Christian protest group-By Yaakov Levi-First Publish: 3/23/2014, 2:49 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

Protesters gathered Sunday afternoon outside the embassy of the European Union in Tel Aviv, demanding that the EU pay at least as much attention to the suffering of Christians in Arab countries as to the purported “suffering” of the Palestinians.About 150 members of the Christian community in Israel decided to raise their voices and criticize what they called the “hypocrisy” of the EU, which “has a double standard for Israel, criticizing every little thing that doesn't fit in with their leftist, liberal point of view, while ignoring the torture and decimation Christians routinely undergo in Syria, Egypt, and elsewhere in the Arab world,” protesters said. “It is a clear case of ethnic cleansing, and the Christian world has remained deafly silent.”Father Gabriel Nadaf, a pro-Israel Greek Orthodox priest from Nazareth, was present at the protest, and called for an end to the attacks on Christians. “We thank the State of Israel for providing a warm home to Christians,” he said.A spokesperson for the group, Sha'adi Mur'an Halul, compared the situation of Christians in the Muslim world with that of Jews in pre-World War II Europe. “We saw how the silence of the world brought about the Holocaust in which 6 million Jews were killed,” he said.

Christian Protest outside EU embassy

“Israel lets us worship freely, and to live a normal life. We decided to speak up and tell the European governments and the human rights groups in Israel and around the world – do something, do not repeat the mistakes of the past,” he said. “We get a lot of news about what is happening to Christians in the Middle East, and they are begging us to help them. They envy our being citizens of Israel, and wish that they, too, could live in the Jewish state,” Halul said.Assisting the protesters was Alon Schwartzer from the Im Tirzu group. Schwartzer said that it was time for human rights groups to “begin working in the places that really concern them,” not in Israel, where human rights is a matter of course. “We are here to help the Christian community in any way we can,” he added.Nadaf and Halul are also supporters of the IDF, and have encouraged young Christians to volunteer for the army. Israeli Arabs are welcome in the IDF, but they are not subject to the draft, in order not to place them in a position where they would be at odds with community or family members. Halul is a spokesman for the Forum of Christian IDF Soldiers, and Nadaf has met with many Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and President Shimon Peres, expressing his support for IDF service among Christians, and urging leaders to make greater efforts to reach out to young Christian Arabs.

03/21/2014 - VATICAN INSIDER -Fortune ranks Francis as “World’s Greatest Leader”-Obama was excluded from the top 50 list, while Merkel came second, followed by Mulally, Buffett and Clinton. “Francis has electrified the Church,” the online magazine wrote-ByDomenico Agasso jr

Turin-Pope Francis is the world’s most important and influential leader according to Fortune magazine which has published its list of top leaders. Surprisingly, Barack Obama, who is in theory the world’s most powerful man, did not feature in the list. He is the first US president to be excluded.German Chancellor Angela Merkel came second, followed by Ford chief, Alan Mulally and the “Oracle of Omaha”, Warren Buffett. The first figure in the list with any links to the White House is former president Bill Clinton. After Time magazine crowned him Person of the Year 2013, and after Rolling Stone magazine, the “bible” of rock, dedicated one of its front covers to him, now money magazine Fortune has named him the world’s greatest leader.“Just over a year ago, a puff of white smoke announced the new spiritual leader of 1.2 billion Roman Catholics around the world,” writes Fortune, in its paragraph on the Latin American Pope. “In the brief time since, Francis has electrified the church and attracted legions of non-Catholic admirers by energetically setting a new direction.”“He has refused – the online magazine continues – to occupy the palatial papal apartments, has washed the feet of a female Muslim prisoner, is driven around Rome in a Ford Focus, and famously asked "Who am I to judge?" with regard to the church's view of gay members. ”Bergoglio “created a group of eight cardinals to advise him on reform, which a church historian calls the "most important step in the history of the church for the past 10 centuries."According to the US magazine, “his hardest work lies ahead. And yet signs of a "Francis effect" abound: In a poll in March, one in four Catholics said they'd increased their charitable giving to the poor this year. Of those, 77% said it was due in part to the Pope.”Sixth in the list is Burmese Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi, seventh is the Commander U.S. Forces in Afghanistan, General Joe Dunford, Bono, the lead singer of U2 came eighth, the Dalai Lama tenth and Amazon’s founder, Jeff Bezos, tenth.

BERLIN (AP) — The drug haul was unremarkable, but the destination raised eyebrows.German weekly Bild am Sonntag reported Sunday that customs officials intercepted a cocaine shipment destined for the Vatican in January.Officers at Leipzig airport found 340 grams (12 ounces) of the drug packed into 14 condoms inside a shipment of cushions coming from South America. The paper says the package was simply addressed to the Vatican postal office, meaning any of the Catholic mini-state's 800 residents could have picked it up.Citing a German customs report, the paper adds that a sting operation arranged with Vatican police didn't lure a possible recipient. The drugs would have a street value of several tens of thousands of euros (dollars).Neither German customs nor the Vatican could be immediately reached for comment.

03/22/2014 - VATICAN INSIDER-Abuse victim is among the members of Francis' new anti-paedophilia Commission-Marie Collins and Sean O’Malley are among the first eight chosen by the Pope. “Other members from various parts of the world will be appointed in due course”-Domenico Agasso jr

Rome

Today Pope Francis nominated the first eight members of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors instituted to prevent abuse in the Church. The new Commission is made up of four men and four women from different countries, including Marie Collins, who was a victim of sexual abuse in Ireland in the 1960s and the Franciscan Cardinal Sean O’Malley, Archbishop of Boston and a member of the Pope’s eight-member Council of Cardinals. O’Malley had announced the establishment of a special anti-paedophilia Commission last December. The other individuals selected are: Catherine Bonnet (France); Sheila Hollins (Britain); Claudio Papale, an Italian jurist and Professor of Canonical Law at the Pontifical Urbaniana University; former Polish ambassador Hanna Suchocka; the Jesuit priest Humberto Miguel Yanez (Argentina) and the Dean of the Gregorian Faculty, Hans Zollner (Germany). The director of the Holy See Press Office, Fr. Federico Lombardi, announced the first nominations explaining that “the Commission created by Francis to protect minors from sex abuse, is part of the Pope’s mission to respond to his sacred duty of ensuring the safety of young people.” “There will be other members chosen from various parts of the world joining this initial group,” he added. For the time being, most of the eight members that form the structure’s foundation are European. This is in order “to make meetings easier,” the Vatican spokesman said. “The Commission believes the Church has a crucial role to play in this field and intends to look towards the future without forgetting the past, adopting a multifaceted approach to ensure the protection of minors. This includes education to prevent the exploitation of children, the adoption of criminal procedures where offences are committed against minors civil and canonical duties and responsibilities, development of best-practices identified and developed within society as a whole,” Lombardi said. The newly established Commission is now called to work quickly and collaborate in a number of tasks, including:  the development of a definitive Commission structure, outlining its aim and responsibilities and suggesting more candidates, particularly from other continents and countries, who can be called to serve the Commission.”Lombardi stressed that the Pope’s initiative is a continuation of the work begun by his predecessors and added: With this new act Bergoglio makes it very clear that the Church must make child protection one of its top priorities. To promote this initiative the Pope has indicated the names of a number of highly qualified individuals who are known for their commitment in this field.”

THE FIRST JUDGEMENT OF THE EARTH STARTED WITH WATER-IT ONLY MAKES SENSE THE LAST GENERATION WILL BE HAVING FLOODING
GENESIS 7:6-12
6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.
8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,
9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.
10 And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.
GOD PROMISED BY A RAINBOW-THE EARTH WOULD NEVER BE DESTROYED TOTALLY WITH A FLOOD AGAIN.BUT FLOODIING IS A SIGN OF JUDGEMENT.

(Reuters) - Three people died and at least eight others were injured on Saturday in a landslide that destroyed six or more homes along a state highway in northwest Washington state, officials said.Mud, possibly produced by recent heavy rain, slid across part of State Route 530 near Oso, Washington, north of Seattle, Washington state trooper Mark Francis said. The three deaths were confirmed by the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office. Eight people were rescued and were being treated at area hospitals and at least six houses were destroyed, the sheriff's office said in a statement.Francis said the slide was in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains where rains have been heavy lately. The mudslide caused blockage of the Stillaguamish River, adding flooding to the mud problem, Francis said. The highway was closed in both directions.(Reporting by Kevin Murphy in Kansas City, Missouri; Editing by Alex Dobuzinskis and Lisa Shumaker)
