José Manuel Durão
Barroso-President of the European Commission-Speech by President Barroso
at the opening of the Special Event on Millennium Development
Goals-Special Event on Millennium Development Goals/New York-25
September 2013
Excellencies,Ladies and Gentlemen,
Over the past 20 years the world
has made great progress in fighting poverty. This is in no small measure
thanks to the Millennium Development Goals. They are a powerful
incentive for real, tangible and collective action. In his report “A life
of dignity
for all,” Secretary General Ban Ki-moon rightly stressed: The MDGs pay
off. Fewer people now go to bed hungry, fewer children are dying from
preventable diseases. Better access to clean drinking water has improved
health. This was only possible because we have all worked together. We
should all be proud of what has been accomplished.I am proud of the
contribution the
European Union makes to the MDGs: Over the last ten years, we helped 70
million more households to have access to drinking water. 7.5 million
births were attended by skilled health personnel. Our support has
ensured that nearly 14 million more boys and girls benefit from primary
education.I have witnessed this progress
first hand in many partner countries I visited over the last years, from
Tanzania to Benin, from Ivory Coast to Mozambique. But while we
acknowledge these
positive developments, we have no right to be complacent. Too many
people remain trapped in poverty; too many women and babies struggle to
survive childbirth; and basic food security remains a luxury for
millions. So clearly, much more needs to be done.
Ladies and Gentlemen,My political vision is that of a
world where every man, woman and child lives in dignity and prosperity;
where preventable infant and maternal mortality are confined to history;
where poor access to water, to education and health services, and the
abuse of fundamental human rights are things of the past;but also a world where we unite to
address our shared global challenges, such as climate change and
advance together on a more sustainable growth path.
Ladies and gentlemen,
I believe the global community must act on two fronts:
First, we must finish what we
started. –We must keep pursuing all MDGs right to the end.I already
announced at the last
high level event on MDGs that the EU would dedicate a billion euros to
helping those countries and MDGs most off track. This "special MDG
billion" is already bearing fruit in supporting those most in need
around the world. But we have no intention of
resting there. The EU and its members are committed to staying the
world's most generous donor. In our next 7 year budget from 2014 to
2020, we have again agreed on important development funds.Let me turn to
our second front of action – what comes after 2015?Eradicating extreme
poverty within
one generation is possible. We must avoid the indifference towards
persistent poverty. That also requires addressing the global
sustainability challenge, building on the commitments made in Rio.Let me
sketch five vital stepping stones to attain that objective:First,
empowerment. Only with
decent education, basic healthcare, nutritious food, clean water and
access to energy and infrastructure can we all thrive. Only with this
"basic toolbox of decency" can people truly take their development in
their own hands. By 2030 these tools must be a reality for all
people.Second, inclusive and sustainable
growth. Sustainable economic growth is a key ingredient in reducing
poverty. People need a fair stake in the global economy.Third, and
related to this,
environmental sustainability. The unsustainable use of resources puts at
risk the basic conditions for a decent life, and the fabric of our
economies.Fourth, equity and good governance. Human rights, good
governance and the rule of law are key for true human development. And
fifth, peace and stability.
The tragic reality is that fragile and conflict-affected countries are
furthest away from meeting the MDGs. We need to tackle the root causes
of poverty and unsustainable development, and not only deal with the
symptoms. All this shows that there is a
fundamental link between global sustainability and poverty eradication. I
firmly believe that the fight against poverty and the fight for
sustainability are two sides of the same coin.We need an integrated
approach where economic, social and environmental elements reinforce
each other. We need a genuine partnership
including governments from all countries, international organisations,
civil society and the private sector. It will also be important to take
into account evolving economic circumstances and capabilities. And to
guide this international partnership we will need a single, integrated,
universal post-2015 framework.I therefore welcome the agreed "Outcome
Document", also because it contains a roadmap for the process ahead.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
We have a historic chance. For the
first time ever, we have what it takes to eliminate poverty in our
lifetimes and to ensure sustainable prosperity within the boundaries of
what our planet can provide.Frankly: It is a shame that at the
start of the 21st century, some still consider poverty as a fatality.
There is a beautiful African proverb: "A person is only a person through
another person". We should heed this message! Achieving such a world is
possible. It is not just an ethical imperative. It is the right and
smart thing to do - our globalized world will not work if millions are
excluded from it.The EU will continue working hand
in hand with its partners to make this happen, through an ambitious and
comprehensive post-2015 framework;Strong international leadership is
required. Because leadership is about making possible what is necessary!

THE 7 DAY SUKKOT HAS ENDED ON SEPT 24TH AT
6PM.AND NOW ON THE 8TH DAY AT 6PM OR SEPT 25TH IS THE DAY CALLED SHEMINI
ATZERET.OR THE GIVING OF THE TORAH OR BIBLE TO ISRAEL.
Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah
Level: Basic
Significance: A follow-up to Sukkot; the completion of the annual cycle of Torah readings Length: 2 days (Some: 1 day) Customs: Limited "dwelling" in the sukkah; dancing and rejoicing with Torah scrolls
...On the fifteenth day of this seventh month is the
Festival of Sukkot, seven days for the L-RD... on the eighth day, there shall
be a holy convocation for you. -Leviticus 23:34
Tishri 22, the day after the seventh day of
Sukkot, is the holiday Shemini Atzeret. In
Israel, Shemini Atzeret is also the holiday of
Simchat Torah. Outside of Israel, where extra days of
holidays are held, only the second day of Shemini Atzeret is Simchat
Torah:
Shemini Atzeret is Tishri 22 and 23, while Simchat Torah is Tishri
23.These two holidays are commonly thought of as part of Sukkot, but
that is
technically incorrect; Shemini Atzeret is a holiday in its own right and
does
not involve some of the special observances of Sukkot. We do not take up
the
lulav and etrog on these days, and our dwelling in the sukkah is more
limited,
and performed without reciting a blessing.Shemini Atzeret literally means "the assembly of the eighth (day)."
Rabbinic literature explains the holiday this way:
our Creator is like a host, who invites us as visitors for a limited time, but
when the time comes for us to leave, He has enjoyed himself so much that He
asks us to stay another day. Another related explanation: Sukkot is a holiday
intended for all of mankind, but when Sukkot is over, the Creator invites the
Jewish people to stay for an extra day, for a more intimate celebration.
Simchat Torah means "Rejoicing in the Torah." This
holiday marks the completion of the annual cycle of
weekly Torah readings. Each week in
synagogue we publicly read a few chapters from
the Torah, starting with Genesis Ch. 1 and working our way around to
Deuteronomy 34. On Simchat Torah, we read the last Torah portion, then proceed
immediately to the first chapter of Genesis, reminding us that the Torah is a
circle, and never ends. This completion of the readings is a time of great celebration. There are
processions around the synagogue carrying Torah
scrolls and plenty of high-spirited singing and
dancing in the synagogue with the Torahs. Drinking is also common during this
time; in fact, a traditional source recommends performing the priestly blessing
earlier than usual in the service, to make sure the
kohanim are not drunk when the time comes! As
many people as possible are given the honor of an
aliyah (reciting a
blessing over the Torah
reading); in fact, even children are called for an aliyah blessing on
Simchat
Torah. In addition, as many people as possible are given the honor of
carrying
a Torah scroll in these processions. Children do not carry the scrolls
(they
are much too heavy!), but often follow the procession around the
synagogue,
sometimes carrying small toy Torahs (stuffed plush toys or paper
scrolls). In some synagogues, confirmation ceremonies or ceremonies
marking the beginning
of a child's Jewish education are held at this time.
Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah are holidays on which
work is not permitted.

22. You shall tithe all the seed crop that the field gives forth, year by year. 23. And you shall eat before the Lord, your God, in the place
He chooses to establish His Name therein, the tithes of your grain, your
wine, and your oil, and the firstborn of your cattle and of your sheep,
so that you may learn to fear the Lord, your God, all the days. 24. And if the way be too long for you, that you are unable to
carry it, for the place which the Lord, your God, will choose to
establish His Name therein, is too far from you, for the Lord, your God,
will bless you. 25. Then you shall turn it into money, and bind up the money
in your hand, and you shall go to the place the Lord, your God, will
choose. 26. And you shall turn that money into whatever your soul
desires; cattle, sheep, new wine or old wine, or whatever your soul
desires, and you shall eat there before the Lord, your God, and you
shall rejoice, you and your household. 27. And [as for] the Levite who is in your cities you shall not forsake him, for he has neither portion nor inheritance with you. 28. At the end of three years, you shall take out all the tithe of your crop in that year and place it in your cities. 29. And the Levite because he has no portion or inheritance
with you and the stranger, and the orphan, and the widow, who are in
your cities, will come and eat and be satisfied; so that the Lord, your
God, will bless you in all the work of your hand that you will do. (On Shabbat, Second Reading begins here:)
Deuteronomy 15
1. At the end of seven years you will make a release. 2. And this is the manner of the release; to release the hand
of every creditor from what he lent his friend; he shall not exact from
his friend or his brother, because time of the release for the Lord has
arrived. 3. From the foreigner you may exact; but what is yours with your brother, your hand shall release. 4. However, there will be no needy among you, for the Lord
will surely bless you in the land the Lord, your God, is giving you for
an inheritance to possess. 5. However, if you hearken to the voice of the Lord, your God,
to be careful to do all this commandment, which I am commanding you
today. 6. For the Lord, your God, has blessed you, as He spoke to
you, and you will lend to many nations, but you will not borrow; and you
will rule over many nations, but they will not rule over you. 7. If there will be among you a needy person, from one of your
brothers in one of your cities, in your land the Lord, your God, is
giving you, you shall not harden your heart, and you shall not close
your hand from your needy brother. 8. Rather, you shall open your hand to him, and you shall lend him sufficient for his needs, which he is lacking. 9. Beware, lest there be in your heart an unfaithful thought,
saying, "The seventh year, the year of release has approached," and you
will begrudge your needy brother and not give him, and he will cry out
to the Lord against you, and it will be a sin to you. 10. You shall surely give him, and your heart shall not be
grieved when you give to him; for because of this thing the Lord, your
God, will bless you in all your work and in all your endeavors. 11. For there will never cease to be needy within the land.
Therefore, I command you, saying, you shall surely open your hand to
your brother, to your poor one, and to your needy one in your land. 12. If your brother, a Hebrew man or a Hebrew woman, is sold
to you, he shall serve you for six years, and in the seventh year you
shall send him forth free from you. 13. And when you send him forth free from you, you shall not send him forth empty-handed. 14. You shall surely provide him from your flock, from your
threshing floor, and from your vat, you shall give him from what the
Lord, your God, has blessed you. 15. And you shall remember that you were a slave in the land
of Egypt, and the Lord, your God, redeemed you; therefore, I am
commanding you this thing today. 16. And it will be, if he says to you, "I will not leave you,"
because he loves you and your household, for it is good for him with
you, 17. Then you shall take an awl and put it through his ear and
into the door, and he shall be a servant to you forever; and also to
your maidservant you shall do likewise. 18. You shall not be troubled when you send him free from you,
for twice as much as a hired servant, he has served you six years, and
the Lord, your God, will bless you in all that you shall do. (On Shabbat, Third Reading begins here:): 19. Every firstborn male that is born of your cattle or of
your flock you shall sanctify to the Lord, your God. You shall neither
work with the firstborn of your ox, nor shear the firstborn of your
flock. 20. You shall eat it before the Lord, your God, year by year, in the place the Lord chooses-you and your household. 21. And if there be any blemish in it, whether it be lame, or
blind, or any ill blemish, you shall not sacrifice it to the Lord, your
God. 22. You shall eat it within your cities, the unclean and the clean together, as the deer, and as the gazelle.
23. However, you shall not eat its blood; you shall pour it on the ground, as water.
Second Reading:
(On Shabbat, Fourth Reading)
Deuteronomy 16
1. Keep the month of spring, and make the Passover offering to the Lord, your God, for in the month of spring, the Lord, your God, brought you out of Egypt at night. 2. You shall slaughter the Passover sacrifice to the Lord,
your God, [of the] flock, and [the Festival sacrifices of the] cattle,
in the place which the Lord will choose to establish His Name therein. 3. You shall not eat leaven with it; for seven days you shall
eat with it matzoth, the bread of affliction, for in haste you went out
of the land of Egypt, so that you shall remember the day when you went
out of the land of Egypt all the days of your life.
Third Reading:
(On Shabbat, Fifth Reading) 4. And no leaven shall be seen with you within all your border
for seven days; neither shall any of the flesh you slaughter on the
preceding day in the afternoon, remain all night until the morning. 5. You shall not sacrifice the Passover offering within any of your cities, which the Lord, your God, is giving you. 6. Except at the place which the Lord, your God, will choose
to establish His Name-there you shall slaughter the Passover offering in
the afternoon, as the sun sets, at the appointed time that you went out
of Egypt. 7. And you shall roast [it] and eat [it] in the place which
the Lord, your God, will choose, and you shall turn away in the morning
and go to your dwellings. 8. For six days you shall eat matzoth, and on the seventh day
there shall be a halt to the Lord, your God. You shall not do any work
[on it].
Fourth Reading:
(On Shabbat, Sixth Reading) 9. You shall count seven weeks for yourself; from[the time]
the sickle is first put to the standing crop, you shall begin to count
seven weeks. 10. And you shall perform the Festival of Weeks to the Lord,
your God, the donation you can afford to give, according to how the
Lord, your God, shall bless you. 11. And you shall rejoice before the Lord, your God, -you, and
your son, and your daughter, and your manservant, and your maidservant,
and the Levite who is within your cities, and the stranger, and the
orphan, and the widow, who are among you, in the place which the Lord,
your God, will choose to establish His Name therein. 12. And you shall remember that you were a slave in Egypt, and you shall keep and perform these statutes.
Fifth Reading:
(On Shabbat, Seventh Reading) 13. You shall make yourself the Festival of Sukkoth for seven
days, when you gather in [the produce] from your threshing floor and
your vat. 14. And you shall rejoice in your Festival-you, and your son,
and your daughter, and your manservant, and your maidservant, and the
Levite, and the stranger, and the orphan, and the widow, who are within
your cities. 15. Seven days you shall celebrate the Festival to the Lord,
your God, in the place which the Lord shall choose, because the Lord,
your God, will bless you in all your produce, and in all the work of
your hands, and you will only be happy. 16. Three times in the year, every one of your males shall
appear before the Lord, your God, in the place He will choose: on the
Festival of Matzoth and on the Festival of Weeks, and on the Festival of
Sukkoth, and he shall not appear before the Lord empty-handed. 17. [Every] man [shall bring] as much as he can afford, according to the blessing of the Lord, your God, which He has given you.
Maftir:
Numbers 29
35. The eighth day shall be a time of restriction for you; you shall not perform any mundane work. 36. You shall offer up a burnt offering, a fire offering for a
spirit of satisfaction to the Lord: one bull, one ram, and seven lambs
in the first year, [all] unblemished. 37. Their meal offerings and their libations, for the bulls,
for the rams, and for the lambs, according to their number, as
prescribed. 38. And one young male goat for a sin offering, besides the continual burnt offering, its meal offering and its libation. 39. These you shall offer up for the Lord on your festivals,
besides your vows and voluntary offerings, for your burnt offerings, for
your meal offerings, for your libations, and for your peace offerings.

A group of
Palestinian Authority Arab youth has called on PA Arabs to launch a new
wave of armed resistance, or intifada, against Israel. The group,
which calls itself the "Coalition of Intifada Youth in Palestine" on
Tuesday issued a call for a new intifada to break out on the anniversary
of the Second Intifada, also known as the Oslo War, which broke out on
September 28, 2000.In a pamphlet
it distributed, the group stated that the way of the intifada had in
the past united “the Palestinian people” and will unite them again.
The group
called for confrontations with "the occupation forces at all points of
friction in the West Bank, Gaza Strip, Al-Quds and the land that has
been occupied since 1948," starting this Friday, September 27.
The pamphlet
states, "The young Palestinians are thirsty to remove the injustice that
exists in Al-Quds and in the holy sites to Christianity and Islam which
are subject to daily Judaization by settlers, to curb the expansion of
the settlements in the occupied cities in the West Bank and end the
oppressive siege on the Gaza Strip.”The
organization also claimed in the pamphlet that PA Arab youth would
transcend all political differences and unite fully against the
"occupation" and called upon PA Arabs to demonstrate this coming Friday
in all PA Arab cities.Several weeks ago, Fatah’s armed branch, the Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigade, declared war and announced that it would give the “green light” to terrorist attacks targeting Israelis.
Tensions have been high in Judea and Samaria
lately, particularly over the past several days with the murders of two
IDF soldiers in two separate attacks. On Sunday, 20-year-old Gabriel (Gal) Kobi of Tirat Hacarmel was murdered by terrorists
in the Avraham Avinu neighborhood of Hevron, near the Machpelah Cave.
Kobi was shot by the terrorists and later died in the hospital.Last weekend, IDF soldier Tomer Hazan was kidnapped and murdered
by a PA Arab terrorist with whom he had worked in a restaurant in Bat
Yam. The terrorists lured Hazan to Samaria, where he murdered him and
disposed of his body.
Netanyahu: Rouhani Trying to Buy Time
Iranian President's speech at the UN was “cynical and full of hypocrisy,” declares Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu.-By Elad Benari-First Publish: 9/25/2013, 1:42 AM-Israelnationalnews
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu-Flash 90
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s speech at the United Nations General Assembly was “cynical and full of hypocrisy,” Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said Tuesday night. In a
statement he released shortly after Rouhani’s speech, Netanyahu said
that the speech reflects the Iranian plan, namely to "talk and buy time
in order to promote the ability of Iran to acquire nuclear weapons.”“Rouhani
spoke about human rights while Iranian forces are taking part in the
massacre of innocent civilians in Syria, he condemned terrorism while
the Iranian regime carries out terrorism in dozens of countries around
the world," said Netanyahu, who added that although Rouhani said that
nuclear weapons "contradict Iranian morality" a report by the UN’s
atomic agency indicates otherwise.“It is not
for nothing that the speech did not contain any practical proposal to
stop Iran’s military nuclear program and there was no commitment to
follow the resolutions of the UN Security Council,” Netanyahu said.“It is a good
thing that the Israeli delegation did not sit in the room [while
Rouhani was talking, it would have given legitimacy to a regime that
does not recognize that the Holocaust took place and which has publicly
declared its desire to wipe Israel off the map,” he added, referring to his earlier instruction to the Israeli delegation not to be present during Rouhani’s speech.“I will not
allow the Israeli delegation to be part of a cynical public relations
show by a regime that denies the Holocaust and calls for our
destruction,” concluded Netanyahu.
Rouhani condemns Holocaust as crime against humanity
In break from Ahmadinejad’s stance, Iranian president calls mass murder of 6 million Jews by Nazi Germany ‘reprehensible’
In a major break from his
predecessor, Iranian President Hasan Rouhani on Wednesday condemned the
Holocaust as a crime against humanity in a CNN interview with Christiane Amanpour.“I
am not a historian and when it comes to speaking of the dimensions of
the Holocaust it is the historians that should reflect,” Rouhani said
during his visit to New York.“But in general I can tell you that any crime
that happens in history against humanity, including the crime the Nazis
created towards the Jews, is reprehensible and condemnable,” CNN
translated the newly elected president saying.Earlier in the evening, before the interview
aired on the US cable news channel, Rouhani spoke at length about
“violence and extremism” and his country’s nuclear program before the UN
General Assembly.Rouhani’s predecessor, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad,
repeatedly during his eight year term as president denounced the mass
murder of 6 million Jews by Nazi Germany as a “myth” and a “great deception of the Holocaust” generated by Israel.Earlier in the evening Israeli Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the Israeli delegates to walk out of the UN
General Assembly during Rouhani’s speech. He defended his decision
saying their presence “would have given legitimacy to a regime that does
not accept that the Holocaust happened and publicly declares its desire
to wipe Israel off the map.”As Israel’s prime minister, he said, “I won’t
allow the Israeli delegation to be part of a cynical public relations
charade by a regime that denies that Holocaust and calls for our
destruction.”Rouhani said in English in the interview that
“I would like to say to [the] American people: I bring peace and
friendship from Iranians to Americans.” The Iranian president reiterated
that he would like to take serious confidence-building steps with the
United States, but that such a detente would require efforts by both
sides. The US broke diplomatic relations with Iran in
1980, shortly after 52 American diplomats were held hostage in the US
embassy in Tehran for over a year.
US President Barack Obama
acknowledged on Tuesday that Israeli-Palestinian peace talks were
difficult, but insisted a two-state solution was “the best way, the only
way” to ensure a better future for the two peoples.“None
of us are under any illusion that this would be easy,” Obama said at a
press event shortly before the two leaders met on the sidelines of the
UN General Assembly gathering underway in New York.
The talks have “already entailed significant
political risk by President Abbas, as well as Prime Minister Netanyahu,”
Obama said. “Sitting directly at the table, we’ve seen Palestinian and
Israeli representatives discuss some of the most difficult issues that
have been roadblocks to peace for too long.”He added: “But I think the reason that they’ve
been willing to take those risks is they realize this is the best way,
the only way, for us to achieve what should be our goal: two states
living side-by-side in peace and security. It’s right for Palestinian
children. It’s right for Israeli children.”Obama praised Abbas, saying, “President Abbas I
think has consistently rejected violence, has recognized the need for
peace, and I’m grateful to him for his efforts.”
The US president was also careful to emphasize American support for the fragile rule of the Palestinian Authority.“The Palestinian Authority has been a critical
mechanism to improve governance and increase transparency in the West
Bank. Obviously, the Palestinian Authority operates under significant
constraints, including resource constraints. But we think it’s very
important that we continue to support efforts that have been made by the
Authority, for example, to improve internal security and
professionalize security forces inside the Authority. And that, I think,
lays also an important foundation for the kind of economic development
and governance that will be critical for an independent Palestinian
state.”Abbas thanked Obama for his support, and “all
the support that the US is extending to the Palestinian people to build
the institutions of the future Palestinian state, which hopefully will
materialize very soon with your support and continued assistance.”He called the talks a “historic opportunity”
and insisted the Palestinian side was “fully committed to the peace
process so that we can reach a final settlement that ultimately will
lead to the creation of an independent Palestinian state that would live
side-by-side in peace and security with Israel.”Like Obama, he also said the Palestinians
“have no illusions that peace will be easy or simple. And we have to
overcome several difficulties, but we realize that peace in the Middle
East is not just important for the Palestinians and Israelis, it’s
important for the entire region and the world. We understand there will
be difficulties, but we will do our utmost best to overcome them.”American-led peace talks resumed in July after over three years of stalled negotiations.Obama is slated to meet Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington next week.
Obama’s message to Netanyahu: Palestine for Iran
President’s
persistent juxtaposition of nuclear issue and peace process shows he’s
willing to be tough on Tehran — but insists, too, on progress with the
Palestinians
Iran for Palestine — those three
words sum up the key message Barack Obama directed to Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu in his speech Tuesday to the United Nations General
Assembly.The American president’s 42-minute address
provided analysts and pundits with plenty of fodder for dissection: He
discussed at length the civil war in Syria, the nuclear standoff with
Iran, and the future of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. (He also
took a swipe or two at Russia, but made no mention of Japan, India, the
Koreas or Myanmar, while citing Israel 15 times, Palestine 11 times, and
Iran 25 times.)There was nothing deeply surprising for
Israeli ears in what the president said. He had made his position on
Syria abundantly clear in recent weeks, and it was expected that he
would cautiously embrace Iran’s current charm offensive.
Even the stark assertion that Israelis increasingly recognize that “the
occupation of the West Bank is tearing at the democratic fabric of the
Jewish state” was familiar; he had said much the same during his visit
here in March. But what might have raised eyebrows in
Jerusalem was Obama’s not-so subtle linkage of the Iranian nuclear
threat with the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.“In the near term, America’s diplomatic
efforts will focus on two particular issues: Iran’s pursuit of nuclear
weapons, and the Arab-Israeli conflict,” Obama said, opening the
central, major section of his speech. “While these issues are not the
cause of all the region’s problems, they have been a major source of
instability for far too long, and resolving them can help serve as a
foundation for a broader peace.”The president went on to talk about the
mistrust that exists between Tehran and Washington, and while
acknowledging that he doesn’t believe “this difficult history can be
overcome overnight,” stressed an emphatic preference for solving the
nuclear standoff through diplomacy.
Obama warmly welcomed the “more moderate course” Iran’s new president Hasan Rouhani wants to pursue,
mentioning that the new, friendlier face of the Islamic Republic
recently endorsed a longstanding fatwa against nuclear arms. While
reiterating that the US is “determined to prevent” Tehran from acquiring
such weapons, he refrained from issuing an explicit direct threat of
military force. Only in an earlier, more general of his speech, did he
say that “The United States of America is prepared to use all elements
of our power, including military force,” to secure its “core interests
in the region.”In the Iranian context, the president eschewed
the usual “all options are on the table,” and also abstained from
warning of further sanctions. Rather, Obama emphasized “mutual interests
and mutual respect” and highlighted Iranians’ right “to access peaceful
nuclear energy.”For diplomacy to succeed, he said, Iran’s
“conciliatory words will have to be matched by actions that are
transparent and verifiable.” He did not say what would happen if this
did not transpire. And then, immediately after talking about
Tehran’s nuclear program, the leader of the free world turned to “a
conflict that goes back even further than our differences with Iran: the
conflict between Palestinians and Israelis.”The obvious juxtaposition of the two, not
directly related issues, suggested that Obama seeks to revive a
venerable formula known in Hebrew as “Gar’in tmurat Falestin” — the nuclear issue in exchange for Palestine.Knowing that Netanyahu sees the prevention of a nuclear armed Iran as an absolute imperative — it’s his life’s mission,
one that he’s absolutely obsessed with, people close to the prime
minister intimate — the linkage offered the interpretation that Obama
remained determined to thwart Iran’s nuclear quest, but also to ensure
that Jerusalem show itself increasingly forthcoming on the Palestinian
quest for statehood. While both the White House and the Prime
Minister’s Office categorically deny any such connection between the two
issues, analysts have long assumed that Obama has in the past suggested
just such an equation. In a recent interview with Haaretz’s Ari
Shavit, outgoing Israeli ambassador to the US Michael Oren implicitly
confirmed that the “Gar’in tmurat Falestin” had been tried,
unsuccessfully.“Would you agree that the right deal was an
obvious deal: Palestine for Iran. But this deal was not brought to
fruition. Obama did not stop Iran and Netanyahu did not take historic
action on Palestine,” Shavit asked Oren.
“That’s correct,” Oren replied. “And it is
disappointing. But we haven’t reached the end of the story yet. Look
where we were in the spring of 2009 and look where we are now. Today
there’s no talk of containment of a nuclear Iran and they’re not
demanding a settlement freeze from us. There’s been a dynamic in US
policy and the dynamic was in our direction.”With Obama having specified Tuesday that the
Iranian nuclear issue and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict are the two
current key focuses of his foreign policy, Netanyahu will likely hear
from the president, at their meeting in the White House scheduled for
next Monday, the promise of a firm American stance on the nuclear issue
and the expectation of a generous Israeli position regarding Palestinian
peace negotiations.“Real breakthroughs on these two issues —
Iran’s nuclear program, and Israeli-Palestinian peace — would have a
profound and positive impact on the entire Middle East and North
Africa,” Obama promised on Tuesday, linking the two again.
KING JESUS IS COMING FOR US ANY TIME NOW. THE RAPTURE. BE PREPARED TO GO.
MUSLIM NATIONS (SLAUGHTERED BY NUKES FOR COMING AGAINST ISRAEL)
EZEKIEL 38:1-12
1 And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
2 Son of man, set thy face against Gog,(RULER) the land of Magog,(RUSSIA) the chief prince of Meshech(MOSCOW)and Tubal,(TOBOLSK) and prophesy against him,
3 And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog,(LEADER OF RUSSIA) the chief prince of Meshech(MOSCOW) and Tubal:TOBOLSK)
4 And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws,(GOD FORCES THE RUSSIA-MUSLIMS TO MARCH) and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords:
5 Persia,(IRAN,IRAQ) Ethiopia, and Libya with them; all of them with shield and helmet:
6 Gomer,(GERMANY) and all his bands; the house of Togarmah (TURKEY) of the north quarters, and all his bands:(SUDAN,AFRICA) and many people with thee.
7 Be thou prepared, and prepare for thyself, thou, and all thy company that are assembled unto thee, and be thou a guard unto them.
8 After many days thou shalt be visited: in the latter years thou shalt come into the land that is brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people, against the mountains of Israel, which have been always waste: but it is brought forth out of the nations, and they shall dwell safely all of them.
9 Thou shalt ascend and come like a storm, thou shalt be like a cloud to cover the land, thou, and all thy bands, and many people with thee.(RUSSIA-EGYPT AND MUSLIMS)
10 Thus saith the Lord GOD; It shall also come to pass, that at the same time shall things come into thy mind, and thou shalt think an evil thought:
11 And thou shalt say, I will go up to the land of unwalled villages;(ISRAEL) I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates,
12 To take a spoil,(OIL IS IN SPOIL) and to take a prey; to turn thine hand upon the desolate places that are now inhabited, and upon the people that are gathered out of the nations, which have gotten cattle and goods, that dwell in the midst of the land.
EZEKIEL 39:1-8,11-18
1 Therefore, thou son of man, prophesy against Gog,(LEADER OF RUSSIA) and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech (MOSCOW) and Tubal: (TUBOLSK)
2 And I will turn thee back,(RUSSIA-ARAB MUSLIM ISRAEL HATERS) and leave but the sixth part of thee,(5/6TH OR 300 MILLION DEAD RUSSIAN/ARAB/MUSLIMS I BELIEVE) and will cause thee to come up from the north parts,(RUSSIA) and will bring thee upon the mountains of Israel:
3 And I will smite thy bow out of thy left hand, and will cause thine arrows to fall out of thy right hand.
4 Thou shalt fall upon the mountains of Israel, thou, and all thy bands,( ARABS) and the people that is with thee: I will give thee unto the ravenous birds of every sort, and to the beasts of the field to be devoured.
5 Thou shalt fall upon the open field: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord GOD.
6 And I will send a fire on Magog,(NUCLEAR BOMB) and among them that dwell carelessly in the isles: and they shall know that I am the LORD.
7 So will I make my holy name known in the midst of my people Israel; and I will not let them pollute my holy name any more: and the heathen shall know that I am the LORD, the Holy One in Israel.
8 Behold, it is come, and it is done, saith the Lord GOD; this is the day whereof I have spoken.
11 And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will give unto Gog (RUSSIA/ARAB/MUSLIMS) a place there of graves in Israel, the valley of the passengers (EAST OF THE DEAD SEA IN JORDAN VALLEY) on the east of the sea: and it shall stop the noses of the passengers: and there shall they bury Gog (RUSSIAN) and all his multitude:(ARAB/MUSLIM HORDE) and they shall call it The valley of Hamongog.(BURIEL SITE OF THE 300 MILLION,RUSSIAN/ARAB/MUSLIMS)
12 And seven months shall the house of Israel be burying of them, that they may cleanse the land.(OF ISRAEL)
13 Yea, all the people of the land (OF ISRAEL) shall bury them; and it shall be to them a renown the day that I (GOD-JESUS) shall be glorified, saith the Lord GOD.
14 And they shall sever out men of continual employment,(NUCLEAR BOMB EXPERTS) passing through the land to bury with the passengers those that remain upon the face of the earth, to cleanse it: after the end of seven months shall they search.
15 And the passengers that pass through the land, when any seeth a man’s bone, then shall he set up a sign by it,(WON'T TOUCH IT) till the buriers have buried it (PROPERLY) in the valley of Hamongog.(RUSSIA/ARAB/MUSLIMS NEW BURIEL SITE)
16 And also the name of the city shall be Hamonah. Thus shall they cleanse the land.(OF THE ISRAEL-GOD HATERS)
17 And, thou son of man, thus saith the Lord GOD; Speak unto every feathered fowl,(500 MILLION MIGRATING BIRDS THREW ISRAEL EVERY SPRING,FALL) and to every beast of the field, Assemble yourselves, and come; gather yourselves on every side to my sacrifice that I do sacrifice for you, even a great sacrifice upon the mountains of Israel, that ye may eat flesh, and drink blood.(OF THE RUSSIAN/ARAB/MUSLIM ARMIES)
18 Ye shall eat the flesh of the mighty, and drink the blood of the princes of the earth, of rams, of lambs, and of goats, of bullocks, all of them fatlings of Bashan.
19 And ye (MIGRATING BIRDS IN ISRAEL) shall eat fat till ye be full, and drink blood till ye be drunken, of my sacrifice which I have sacrificed for you.(RUSSIAN/ARAB/MUSLIM ISRAEL HATERS)
20 Thus ye shall be filled at my table with horses and chariots, with mighty men, and with all men of war, saith the Lord GOD.
21 And I (GOD-JESUS) will set my glory among the heathen,(WORLD NATIONS) and all the heathen (WORLD NATIONS) shall see my judgment that I have executed,(AGAINST ISRAELS ENEMIES) and my (GODS) hand that I have laid upon them.(ISRAELS HATER ENEMIES)

37 For I will cause Elam (IRAN-BUSHEHR NUKE SITE) to be dismayed before their enemies, and before them that seek their life: and I will bring evil upon them, even my fierce anger,(ISRAELS NUKES POSSIBLY) saith the LORD; and I will send the sword after them, till I have consumed them:(IRAN AND ITS NUKE SITES DESTROYED)
Israel PM accuses Iran president of hypocrisy
1 hour ago-sept 25,13-yahoonews
JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel's prime minister on Tuesday voiced
deep skepticism about the new Iranian president's outreach to the West,
saying the world "should not be fooled" and must keep up the pressure on
Tehran's suspect nuclear program.Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu issued his warning in response to Iranian President Hasan
Rouhani's address to the General Assembly. In his speech, the Iranian
leader said his nation is ready to restart stalled negotiations over its
nuclear program. He also called for moderation and rejected violence.Israeli
officials believe Iran is trying to develop a nuclear bomb and fear
that Rouhani's gestures to the West will lead to an easing of
international pressure. Netanyahu's statements, issued both before and
after Rouhani's speech, were meant as a counterweight to the growing
enthusiasm in the West over a series of moderate overtures by Rouhani.
He also said Rouhani offered no plans to halt his nuclear program. In
comments likely to play into Israel's fears, President Barack Obama
told the U.N. on Tuesday that he had instructed Secretary of State John
Kerry to explore contacts with Iran."Israel would welcome a
genuine diplomatic solution that truly dismantles Iran's capacity to
develop nuclear weapons," Netanyahu said in a videotaped statement ahead
of Rouhani's speech. "But we will not be fooled by half-measures that
merely provide a smokescreen for Iran's continual pursuit of nuclear
weapons. And the world should not be fooled either."After
Rouhani's speech, Netanyahu showed no signs of softening his position.
He said the address was filled with "hypocrisy," saying that while
Rouhani was talking of peace, Iranian forces were participating in the
large-scale slaughter of civilians in Syria, a close ally. He also
accused Iran of using terrorism in "dozens" of countries, developing
long-range missiles, denying the Holocaust, calling for Israel's
destruction and pushing forward with its nuclear program."It is
no coincidence that the speech lacked both any practical proposal to
stop Iran's military nuclear program and any commitment to fulfill U.N.
Security decisions," he said."This is exactly Iran's strategy —
to talk and play for time in order to advance its ability to achieve
nuclear weapons," he added. "The international community must test Iran
not by its words, but by its actions."Netanyahu said he would
discuss the matter with Obama at a White House meeting next week, and
welcomed Obama's pledge that Iranian words be matched with "transparent
and verifiable" action.
Iran denies accusations by Israel and
Western countries that it is seeking nuclear weapons, saying its nuclear
program is for peaceful purposes only.Israel considers a
nuclear-armed Iran to be a threat to its very existence, citing Iran's
repeated calls for Israel's destruction, its sophisticated arsenal of
weapons and its support for Israel's bitterest Arab enemies. Hezbollah
in Lebanon, to Israel's north, and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, on Israel's
southern flank, possess tens of thousands of rockets and missiles
provided by Iran.
Netanyahu has issued four demands for halting
Iran's nuclear program. He says Iran must stop enriching uranium, a key
step in developing a nuclear weapon; ship its stockpile of enriched
uranium out of the country; close a heavily fortified underground
enrichment facility; and not make plutonium, another possible path to
nuclear weapons. He also says any diplomatic activity must be
accompanied by a "credible" military threat.
In the current
diplomatic environment, it seems unlikely the West will insist on such
conditions. Israel has repeatedly threatened to attack Iran,
unilaterally if necessary, if it concludes diplomacy has failed.Netanyahu
instructed Israel's U.N. delegation to boycott Rouhani's speech and
walk out of the General Assembly. Israel has strongly objected to
efforts by its enemies to boycott it in international bodies, as well as
attempts by pro-Palestinian activists to boycott Israeli businesses and
products."As the prime minister of Israel, the state of the
Jewish people, I could not allow the Israeli delegation to be part of a
cynical public relations ploy by a regime that denies the Holocaust and
calls for our destruction," he said. After Rouhani's speech,
Israeli Cabinet minister Yuval Steinitz, who is responsible for
monitoring the Iranian nuclear program, met with U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon
and urged the international community to avoid the same mistakes that
enabled North Korea to develop nuclear weapons. In a statement, Steinitz
said North Korea developed its weapon despite two signed agreements
that were enthusiastically welcomed around the world. He said that as a
South Korean citizen, Ban had a special understanding of the danger.

HOSEA 4:1-3
1 Hear the word of the LORD, ye children of Israel: for the LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land,(EARTH) because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.
2 By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood.
3 Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.
ZEPHANIAH 1:2-3
2 I will utterly consume all things from off the land, saith the LORD.
3 I will consume man and beast; I will consume the fowls of the heaven, and the fishes of the sea, and the stumblingblocks with the wicked; and I will cut off man from off the land, saith the LORD.

ATLANTA (Reuters) - Wild pigs have descended on a suburban Atlanta
neighborhood where they are scaring children, making a general nuisance
of themselves, and acting as they if they own the place.
One large specimen was sighted on Monday morning rummaging through
garbage it had strewn across Taneisha Danner's front yard in Lithonia,
an area about 19 miles east of downtown Atlanta. It then trotted into the backyard, taking a nap before returning
with three other pigs from a patch of nearby woods, Danner told Reuters
on Tuesday."This is their home," Danner joked. "We're just visiting."She said the animals were no laughing matter for neighborhood
children, however, noting that some were now afraid to leave the safety
of their homes."My children are even afraid to be downstairs, worried that he (the pig) could come through the door," Danner said.Descendents of wild boar, the feral pigs are a particular pest in
rural Georgia and notorious for damaging farmer's crops, said Charlie
Killmaster, a deer and feral hog biologist with the Georgia Department
of Natural Resources. There are so many hogs that hunting season has been flung wide open
for wild pigs on private land, he said, adding that it was still fairly
rare for them to show up in suburban neighborhoods. The population of one of the most invasive and destructive wild
animals in the United States has grown rapidly in recent years, however.
What was once a largely rural problem has blighted suburban areas in
other states as well. The hogs can be dangerous to humans if they are cornered or if their young are threatened, Killmaster said."There is some level of danger associated with them," he added. "But
in nearly all cases, steering clear of them is all you need to do."Danner said she had complained to local authorities about the hogs
and was told they were trying to find a private trapper to remove them.(Editing by Tom Brown and Andrew Hay)

EU wants answers on NSA bank spying allegations
24.09.13 @ 18:37
By Nikolaj Nielsen
BRUSSELS - The EU does not rule out
suspending the terrorist financial tracking programme (TFTP) with the
Americans following press reports that the US intelligence agency has
direct access to Swift, the global interbank transfer network database.European Commissioner for home affairs Cecilia Malmstrom told a
European Parliament civil liberties committee on Tuesday (24 September)
that any suspension of the international agreement would first require
an “objective and comprehensive assessment and consultations.”
When pressed by euro-deputies, she noted that if the press reports
are true, then it could “constitute a breach of the agreement and a
breach of the agreement can certainly lead to a suspension.”The agreement was negotiated with Washington to track terrorists. It
sets out rules on access, and data protection safeguards. A suspension
would require a qualified majority vote among member states. But Malmstrom’s statement was brushed off later on by high-ranking
commission officials who refused to respond to MEP questions on whether
the agreement should be suspended if allegations were proven true.Commission home affairs director Reinhard Priebe, who co-chairs the
EU-US working group on data protection, would only say that further
consultations are required.Malmstrom wrote a letter to US Treasury Under Secretary David Cohen
on 12 September to ask for clarification on the allegations. She requested in the letter to hold consultations, a formal step in
case of a dispute, to determine if the US is holding up its side of the
agreement.Cohen replied a few days later but Malmstrom told the euro-deputies that she was not satisfied by the responses.“We need more detailed information in order to credibly access
reality and to be in a position to judge whether obligations on the US
side under agreement have been breached,” she said.
She noted the consultation with the Americans would start soon.Set up in 1973, Swift is a Belgian-based private company used by some
10,000 financial institutions in over 200 countries to facilitate the
exchange of financial messages.“Security is still, 40 years later, key to our mission and a core to
our business,” said Blanche Petre, general counsel of Swift.Petre said the company has found no evidence to back the allegations first made by Globo TV, a Brazilian television network.“I can tell you today and I can assure you today that we have no
evidence to suggest there have been any unauthorised access to our
network or data,” she said. She told the committee that their production environment has no
Internet access and that Swift messages undergo multiple encryption
layers.Swift is overseen by the G-10 central banks tasked to ensure adequate safeguards are in place to protect customer data.
Eurozone bank fund needs credit line, Draghi says
Today @ 09:28-sept 25,13
By Benjamin Fox
BRUSSELS - A eurozone bank resolution
fund should have its own credit line allowing it to cover the costs of
bank failure, European Central Bank (ECB) chief Mario Draghi said
Monday.Speaking on Monday (23 September) at a hearing of the European
Parliament's Economic committee, Draghi told MEPs that although national
authorities will still be responsible for bearing the costs of bank
resolution in the short-term, a permanent fund would need a "backstop."The ECB will be conducting stress-tests of banks across the eurozone
in the coming months, as it prepares to become the bloc’s single bank
supervisor next year.
“We’ll have to have national backstops in place,” said Draghi, adding
that “the role for the national backstops is there and it’s realistic.”Draghi, who is a supporter of the plan, played down suggestions that
the ESM, the eurozone's €500 billion bailout fund, could be a source of
funding.“I am not sure that this is possible within the existing treaty,” he said.EU financial services commissioner, Michel Barnier, unveiled his proposal for an singe resolution mechanism (SRM) in July. The commission proposal would create a single system for the
winding-up of failing banks and a common eurozone fund to cover the
costs. However, Barnier's plan would see the SRM start in January 2015,
with the resolution fund being gradually built up over 10 years through a
levy on banks worth around 1 percent of deposits, leading critics to
comment that a lack of money would reduce the fund to a "paper tiger."Senior MEPs are also expected to include provisions for a backstop in
a draft report expected to be published later this week. Other options
could include using the EU budget as collateral.Negotiations on a single resolution mechanism for the eurozone, the
second key part of a banking union, have stalled since the summer, in
large part because of the German elections.
Wolfgang Schaueble, Germany's finance minister, is a staunch critic
of the plan, but seems unlikely to retain his position in a new
coalition government. The timeline is also tight as policy makers edge closer to next May's European elections.MEPs on the economic affairs committee are set to adopt their
position on the text in November in a bid to maintain the pressure on
ministers.

Colorado flood towns may come back less diverse

LYONS, Colo. (AP) — The storms that raged through the Rocky
Mountain foothills instantly remade the landscape and disrupted
thousands of lives. They may have also changed the character of the
funky mountain hamlets that dot the Front Range. The disaster hit rich and poor alike, but some residents will be able to afford to wait and rebuild, while others will not.In
Lyons, 20 minutes north of Boulder, two low-lying mobile home parks
bore the brunt of the damage. Residents say their landlords have told
them they will not rebuild, in part because a river now flows through a
portion of the property."I don't think we'll ever be able to go
back," said Holly Robb, a Lyons native whose grandfather was mayor and
who lived with her husband and two young children in the River Bend
Mobile Home park, which dates to the 1960s."The people who've lived there, who've gone to school there, can't go back," she said. The
flood has accelerated a process that was already underway in the
region's towns. Young, affluent families from places like Boulder and
Denver have flocked here, attracted to the slower pace of life, bohemian
flavor and pristine natural beauty. In Lyons, a quarry town
turned tourist haven, the number of renters fell by half between 2000
and 2010, while the portion paying more than $1,500 a month quadrupled.
The median price of a home rose by 71 percent to $340,000, according to
the U.S. Census.Newcomers have historically moved into the hills
above Main Street, while the lower income residents lived in the flood
plain below. When the storm came, it swept away mobile homes, but left
the new cafes, sushi shop, and revamped high school intact.A
website for the town's mayor, Julie Van Domelen, a consultant for the
World Bank, says she moved to Lyons four years ago. She did not respond
to calls and emails from The Associated Press, but told the Denver Post
she intends to build the town into something better than it was before. Some resident fear there will be no place for the manual laborers, retirees and artists that have given Lyons its character.Carmel
Ross, 66, an artist and caretaker for the elderly, thought about the
town's future amid the splintered trailers that now surround the mobile
home she rents for $430 a month."Who rebuilds a trailer park?"
she asked, laughing through tears. "Lyons is going to become a different
story now. It's a loss of a way of life. The things could always be
bought again, but there will no longer be any low-income housing in this
town."Former Mayor Tim Combs said the new Lyons might look more
like Aspen, a tony, celebrity refuge that began as a working class
hamlet."It's going to upgrade the town. We're going to see nicer
houses replace a house that wasn't so nice," he said. "Lyons is
surrounded by protected open space, so there will be no place for the
poor people to go."Up
the hill from the mobile home parks, beautiful homes sit essentially
untouched, their soggy lawns the only evidence of the disaster that's
crippled the region and re-routed its waterways. Some residents are
planning to stay in these homes until the roads reopen.Among them
is David Tiller, a bluegrass musician who believes the home he owns
will be condemned. He said he feels lucky to have a sturdy support
system, and friends with guest rooms, especially when he thinks of his
neighbors taking refuge in churches."We have so many friends that are offering us places. We have an amazing community — it's almost overwhelming," he said.Lyons
residents were told at a town meeting Thursday that it might take
officials six months to restore drinking water and working sewage.Robb,
a caterer, and her husband, who installs wood floods, said that even if
they could find a new rental in Lyons, they cannot afford to crash
around for that long. For Robb, the realization that she could not go
home dawned slowly in the hectic days after the flood."It's really a second blow to a lot of people that live there," she said.Residents of the even more remote community of Jamestown have been told it could be a year before they can return. When
helicopter rescuers took Jamestown resident Meagan Harrington and her
husband to a makeshift shelter in Boulder with no running water, they
did not have to follow their neighbors inside and look for a bed.Instead,
the couple sat in front of the school waiting for their ride. A college
friend of Harrington's in Boulder had offered them a guest room."We've got it made compared to other people in Jamestown," said Harrington, an industrial hygienist.Ross,
who spent the days after the flood dragging out her muddy carpet
singlehandedly while other flooded residents called private cleaning
services, is unsure where she will go after the shelters close. Her
friends do not have extra rooms for her to stay in, and she has no
family in the region.Combs, the ex-mayor, said he feels for
people like her, but believes that part of the town was already on the
path to getting washed out."Nobody wants to see those McMansions
built that people live in only three weeks of the year," he said. "But
it's the way this country works — the poor people are always getting
pushed out, without or without a flood."___Hannah Dreier can be reached at http://twitter.com/hannahdreier

The Christian reaction to the Peshawar bloodbath
Christians protest against Sunday's suicide bombing
Yesterday’s attack has led to demonstrations across Pakistan and
condemnations from the country’s Episcopal Conference and Muslim
religious leade
vatican insider staffRomeThousands of Christians and other civilians
across Pakistan are rallying against yesterday’s kamikaze attacks on All
Saints Church in Peshawar, which left 81 people dead and at least 145
injured. Protests are taking place in Karachi, Islamabad, Faisalabad,
Hyderabad, Peshawar, Noweshera and other cities, Geo News reports.Demonstrators have been protesting in various
parts of the city of Karachi, where all missionary schools and colleges
remain closed for a three-day period of national mourning announced by
the city’s authorities.Demonstrations are also taking place in various
parts of Peshawar too, including in front of the provincial Assembly.
Members of the Christian community in Hyderabad burnt car tyres and
blocked traffic, lobbing stones against cars. They are calling for those
responsible for the attacks to be brought to justice.Geo News
reported that “in Tando Muhammad Khan and Jamshoro, protests were held
outside the press club.” In Faisabad, a sit-in is blocking traffic.
Christians have also held protests in Bahawalpur, Gujranwala, Sahiwal, Mandi Bahuddin and Hafizabad. The Bishops’ Conference of Pakistan (PCBC) has
issued a communiqué signed by President Mgr. Joseph Coutts, Archbishop
of Karachi, firmly condemning what it defined as a shameful and cowardly
attack. An attack against innocent men, women and children.AsiaNews reported
that the prelate also announced the closure of all Christian
educational institutions between 23 and 25 September “as a sign of
mourning and protest." Mgr. Coutts called for "special prayers" for
"those who have been martyred and wounded", while launching an appeal to
the whole Christian community to "remain calm and avoid violent acts".He addressed the government asking it to "take all
necessary measures to catch the perpetrators," and urgent measures to
"protect the places of worship of religious minorities” against attacks
that have reached "alarming proportions”.Other Christian and religious leaders also
expressed their solidarity. The Bishop of Islamabad/ Rawalpindi Mgr.
Rufin Anthony spoke of "a terrible event “for a country "plagued by
terrorism". "Minorities are living in conditions of insecurity
because of government policies,” the prelate added, inviting Christians
"to protest in a peaceful manner and not cause incidents" at a time
when "maximum unity is required”. Yesterday Paul Bhatti announced that today, activists from the All Pakistan Minorities Alliance (APMA) will hold a mass (but peaceful) demonstration in Islamabad. Maulana Tahir Ashrafi, chairman of the Ulema Council, also expressed his condolences and underlined his support for “our Christian brothers and sisters"."It is shameful that the government fails to
protect minorities in Pakistan," the Constitution provides "the
protection of their rights." "We ask that minorities are protected,” the
prelate said. Fr. Chand Gill, a priest in Peshawar, whose parish is
located not far from the area of the attack speaks of a "devastating"
scene. "The wave of violence and terrorism - he adds - is unstoppable".

“I never covered up child sex abuse cases”, Ratzinger tells religion critic
Benedict XVI writes to Odifreddi
Benedict XVI gives prominent mathematician Piergiorgio Odifreddi a
slap on the wrist in a letter published by Italian newspaper “La
Repubblica”
Marco TosattiRomeAfter Francis’ letter to Eugenio Scalfari, the founder of La Repubblica
newspaper, it’s now Benedict XVI’s turn to send one. Ratzinger has
written a letter to mathematician, media buff and religion critic,
Piergiorgio Odifreddi. Odifreddi, who is particularly critical of the
Catholic faith, wrote the book “Caro Papa ti scrivo” (“A word to you dear Pope”) in response to Ratzinger’s work “Introduction to Christianity”. Now Benedict XVI has replied to him. His letter was too long for La Repubblica
newspaper to publish in full but will feature in a new book by
Odifreddi, who must be pretty happy to be publishing what he defined as
“a one-off in the history of the Church: a dialogue between a theologian
Pope and an atheist mathematician.”“Church, do not keep silent about evils but let
faith leave a trail of light.” This phrase sums up Ratzinger’s rich and
profound theological thinking.Odifreddi intended “Caro papa ti scrivo” as
a “satanic introduction to atheism”. The mathematician, who has appared
on numerous television talk shows sais he was surprised to receive a
reply from Benedict XVI, in which he “expressed gratitude for my
faithful treatment of his book. This is all one could have hoped for and
more in a world where we are used to expecting the bare minimum.”In the Pope Emeritus’ 11-page-long letter he
says he “found some parts [of Odifreddi’s book] enjoyable and useful.
But I was shocked by how aggressive and thoughtless some of the
arguments are”. First of all, Ratzinger rebutted Odifreddi’s claim that
theology is science fiction. “Science fiction is present in many
sciences,” Benedict XVI said, giving some examples: “The great Jacques
Monod used certain phrases in his work which he must have added, purely
as science fiction. “Tetrapod vertebrates exist… because a primitive
fish “chose” to explore the earth but was only able to move around by
hopping around clumsily, thus modifying its behaviour. It was this
selective pressure that apparently gave tetrapods such robust limbs. The
running speeds of certain descendants of this bold explorer, this
Magellan of evolution, can exceed 70 Km per hour.”Benedict XVI reacted strongly to Odifreddi’s
comments regarding child sex abuse in the Church. “I have never tried to
cover these things up. The fact that evil is able to penetrate so
deeply into the interior world of faith, is a cause of great suffering
to us. On the one hand we must bear this suffering but on the other we
need to do all that we can to prevent such incidents from occurring
again. It of no comfort to hear from sociologists that the percentage of
priests guilty of such crimes is no higher than the figures registered
in other similar professions. But this deviant behaviour should not be
ostensibly presented as a filthy crime that only exists in the Catholic
Church. Most importantly, although it is right to expose evil in the
Church, one must not turn a blind eye to “the shining ray of goodness
and purity that the Christian faith has brought light to the world over
the centuries … It is as true today as it was yesterday that faith
inspires unselfish love, service to others, sincerity and justice.”But what Odifreddi got a real slap on the wrist
for, was his comments regarding history. “The remarks you make about
Jesus are not worthy of your scientific standing. Presenting Jesus as if
we knew nothing about Him and as though nothing certain could be said
about his status as a historical figure, I can only advise you and
strongly so, to be a little bit more thorough in your historical
research. I especially recommend you to read the four volume work
co-written by Martin Hengel (an exegete of the Faculty of Protestant
theology at Tübingen university) and Maria Schwemer: it is an excellent
example of historical precision and extensive historical information. In
comparison to this, your comments about Jesus appear rash and should
not be repeated.” Although Ratzinger admitted that the critical
interpretation was lacking in parts, he firmly rejected Odifreddi’s
accusation that he (Ratzinger) had apparently presented the historical
and critical exegesis as an instrument of the antichrist. “By talking
about Jesus’ temptations I was merely referring to Soloviev’s theory,
according to which historical and critical interpretation can also be
used by the antichrist – this is an indisputable fact.” Ratzinger ends his letter by asking some questions
rather than answering them. “If you want to replace God with “Nature”,
the question remains as to who or what this nature is. At no point do
you provide a definition of it. This makes it seem like some irrational
divinity which does not explain anything.” “I would like to
point out, however, that in your religion of mathematics, there are
three elements of human existence which you do not discuss: freedom,
love and evil. I am amazed to see that you have completely left freedom
out, when it is a core value of our modern age.” There is no mention of
love or evil in Odifreddi’s book either. “No matter what neurobiology
may or may not say about freedom, it plays a determining role in the
real drama of human history and must be taken into consideration. But
your mathematical religion offers no information about evil. Any
religion that ignores these fundamental questions is empty.”This is the second time Benedict XVI has made an
intervention since retiring from the public scene. He has otherwise kept
his promise to stay out of the spotlight, living out a quiet retirement
in a Vatican monastery.
EARTHQUAKES

Did Pakistan's massive earthquake just create a new island?
Pakistanis react to a 7.7-magnitude earthquake in Baluchistan.
On Tuesday, after a 7.7-magnitude earthquake rocked western
Pakistan, a "crowd of bewildered people" gathered to stare at an island
rising 60 feet out of the Arabian Sea, according to Reuters.Witnesses claim that the mountainous island, located 600 yards off the country's Gwadar coastline, is brand-new.The earthquake could reportedly be felt in Karachi, hundreds of miles
away from its epicenter in Baluchistan, which borders Iran and
Afghanistan. So far, 45 people have died as a result of the temblor,
with more feared trapped in the rubble. As rescue workers continue to stream into the area, scientists are
trying to figure out what caused the new land mass to appear. It's not
rare for a big earthquake to create an island — just not the kind of
earthquake that hit Pakistan today.Islands normally form after thrust earthquakes, like the 9.1-magnitude monster that caused the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004."You have one piece of crust being pushed underneath another piece of
crust," explained John Bellini, a geophysicist at the U.S. Geological
Survey (USGS). "They lock for awhile, and when the earthquake occurs,
the lock is broken, and part of the crust thrusts upwards."The Indian Ocean earthquake pushed several low-lying areas above the
surface of the ocean near the Andaman Islands, although none of them
were big enough to warrant a name. However, the earthquake that hit Baluchistan today "is very different,"
Bellini said. The fault there is slightly tilted, as opposed to
vertical. Called an oblique strike-slip fault, it is similar to the San
Andreas fault that runs up California."Imagine you had two blocks of wood and you slid them past each other," said Bellini.
As for how it could have created a new island, he said, "I don't know how it would have done that."
Still, the existence of the island was confirmed by Zahid Rafi,
principal seismologist for Pakistan's National Seismic Monitoring
Center, according to CNN. Officials there are still investigating how the island might have formed and whether it was related to the earthquake.New islands, overall, aren't a rare phenomenon. Erosion, glacial retreat, and volcanoes create them all the time. One of the latest to make headlines
was a 2,000-foot-wide island that popped up off the coast of Yemen in
late December 2011 after a volcano erupted under the Red Sea.
