Rescuers comb Oklahoma tornado rubble for buried survivors

By Ian Simpson and Alice Mannette
MOORE, Oklahoma (Reuters) - Rescue workers with sniffer dogs and searchlights picked through the wreckage of a massive tornado to ensure no survivors remained buried in the rubble of primary schools, houses and buildings in an Oklahoma City suburb. The massive tornado on Monday afternoon flattened entire blocks of the town, killed at least 24 people and injured about 240 in Moore, Oklahoma. But as dawn approached on Wednesday, officials were increasingly confident that everyone caught in the disaster had been accounted for, despite initial fears that the twister had claimed the lives of more than 90 people.Jerry Lojka, spokesman for Oklahoma Emergency Management, said search-and-rescue dog teams would search for anybody trapped under the rubble, but that attention would also be focused on a huge cleanup job.
"They will continue the searches of areas to be sure nothing is overlooked," he said. "There's going to be more of a transition to recovery."More than 1,000 people had already registered for assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, which sent hundreds of workers to Oklahoma to help with the recovery.FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate said many more likely needed help but did not have working phones or Internet connections."Right now it's about getting people a place to stay that have lost their homes," he told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" program. "So we're going to start going neighborhood to neighborhood and talking to people and seeing what they're going to need."After a long day of searching through shattered homes that was slowed by rainy weather on Tuesday, Oklahoma County Commissioner Brian Maughan said it seemed no one was missing."As far as I know, of the list of people that we have had that they are all accounted for in one way or another," he said.Dog teams and members of the National Guard were changing shifts to work through the night.Nine children were among the 24 killed, including seven who died at Plaza Towers Elementary School, which took a direct hit by the deadliest tornado to strike the United States in two years.Emergency workers pulled more than 100 survivors from the debris of homes, schools and a hospital after the tornado ripped through the Oklahoma City region with winds exceeding 200 miles per hour, leaving a trail of destruction 17 miles long and 1.3 miles wide.Plaza Towers Elementary was one of five schools in its path. "They literally were lifting walls up and kids were coming out," Oklahoma State Police Sergeant Jeremy Lewis said. "They pulled kids out from under cinder blocks without a scratch on them."The National Weather Service upgraded its calculation of the storm's strength on Tuesday, saying it was a rare EF5, the most powerful ranking on the Enhanced Fujita Scale
'I LOOKED UP AND SAW THE TORNADO'
The last time a giant twister tore through the area, on May 3, 1999, it killed more than 40 people and destroyed thousands of homes. That tornado also ranked as an EF5.Oklahoma Emergency Management's Lojka said 2,400 homes were damaged or obliterated and an estimated 10,000 people affected.Fugate, the FEMA administrator, told CNN the agency had enough money to pay for Oklahoma's recovery while still rebuilding in the Northeast from Superstorm Sandy. FEMA had $11.6 billion in its disaster relief fund, a spokesman said.U.S. Representative Tom Cole, who lives in Moore, told CBS "This Morning" that the Oklahoma Legislature was drafting a law that would allow the governor to tap into state rainy day funds.
The death toll was lower than might have been expected given the extent of the devastation in Moore, home to 55,000 people. Some ascribe the relatively low number to the fact many locals have small "storm safe" shelters, basically a concrete hole in the garage floor with a sliding roof that locks.U.S. Senator James Inhofe of Oklahoma said many people built cellars and safe areas after the 1999 tornado in Moore. "There would have been a lot more people killed, we believe, if they had not had that warning 14 years ago," he said Tuesday on CNN.Billy McElrath, 50, of Oklahoma City, said his wife hid in a storm safe in their garage when the tornado hit.She emerged unhurt even though the storm destroyed the 1968 Corvette convertible she had bought him as a birthday present, and crushed a motorcycle. "Everything else is just trashed," he said as he loaded a pickup with salvaged goods.Kraig Boozier, 47, took to his own small shelter in the Westmoor subdivision of Oklahoma City and watched in shock as a fan in the wall was ripped out."I looked up and saw the tornado above me," he said. When he came out after the storm, he helped a neighbor who had emerged from her own shelter move a car that was blocking the entrance to another neighbor's shelter.
EARLY WARNING
Officials said another factor behind the surprisingly low death toll was the early warning, with meteorologists saying days in advance that a storm system was forming.Once a tornado was forming, people had 15 to 20 minutes of warning, which meant they could take shelter or flee the projected path. The weather service also has new, sterner warnings about deadly tornadoes to get people's attention. Many of those who do not have a basic storm shelter at home, which can cost $2,500 to $5,000, have learned from warnings over the year to seek hiding places at home during a tornado.Jackie Raper, 73, and her daughter, for instance, sought shelter in the bathtub in her house in Oklahoma City."The house fell on top of her," said Caylin Burgett, 16, who says Raper is like a grandmother to her. Raper broke her arm and femur, and bruised her lungs, Burgett said.(Additional reporting by Carey Gillam, Lindsay Morris, Nick Carey, Brendan O'Brien, Greg McCune, Susan Heavey and Doina Chiacu; Writing by Jim Loney and Jane Sutton; Editing by Walker Simon and Doina Chiacu)

The mayor of Paterson, New Jersey, had designated Sunday, May 19 as “Palestinian-American Day” in the city, as he hoisted a Palestinian flag hoisted over City Hall. The occasion might mark first time that the Palestinian flag has flown above any American city hall, The Bergen Record reported.“If they’re citizens of the city of Paterson, they have every right to raise the flag,” Paterson Mayor Jeffery Jones told The Record.

The event was attended by about 120 people shouting “long live Palestine.”“Palestine is our country and we are proud of that,” said oen resident in attendance. “We’re happy [to be] recognized finally.”South Paterson is often known as “Little Ramallah” for its sizeable Arab population.New Jersey Assemblyman Thomas Giblin, a Democrat representing the state’s 34th district, presented a ceremonial resolution marking the event, and U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ) presented a letter of Special Congressional Recognition.

Op-Ed: Chrisians Beautify Their Palestinian Nightmare

Published: Wednesday, May 22, 2013 11:33 AM
Palestinian Arab Christians have chosen to support the side that wants to destroy Christianity. Hating Jews forges a bond between enemies.

Palestinian Christians have manipulated Western public opinion so well that on the very rare occasion that Western media do cover the real plight of Christians in the Palestinian Authority areas, it is only to denounce Israel and its barrier or checkpoints.Last year veteran CBS News anchor Bob Simon reported on the Palestinian Arab Christians, indicting Israel’s “occupation” as responsible for their dramatic disappearance. The 60 Minutes story caused Israel tremendous PR damage. As in the case of “The Stones Cry Out”, the CBS video doesn’t mention forced marriages, conversions, beatings, land thefts, fire bombings, commercial boycott, torture, kidnapping, sexual harassment, and extortion which Arab Christians suffer under the horrible PLO dictatorship.
A report in 2002, based on Israeli intelligence gathered during Operatio Defensive Shield, explained that “Arafat’s intelligence network intimidated the Christian population in Bethlehem. They extorted money from them, confiscated land and property and left them to the mercy of street gangs and other criminal activity, with no protection”.Christian graves, crosses, and statues were desecrated and Christians suffered physical abuse, beatings, and Molotov attacks. But it would be a mistake to depict these Christians as mere victims of Muslim Arab violence. They are also guilty, since they choose to demonize Israel as the human rights violator. After the 1948 war, Christian communities suffered most in Judea, not under “Israel’s occupation”, but because Muslim refugees were settled in their midst by the corrupted PLO leadership. According to veteran journalist Danny Rubinstein, who has been writing about Palestinian Arabs for the last 46 years, “Bethlehem saw an influx of thousands of Muslim refugees from the villages in the southern part of Jerusalem, and three refugee camps were erected”.Until Palestinian terrorists turned Bethlehem into a safe haven for suicide bombers and Jews’ assassins, the Christian Arab Bethlehemites were free to enter IJerusalem, just as many Israelis visited the "little town" in Judea. The horrible Arafat gang turned Bethlehem and its holy places into the town which exported a string of deadly terror attacks into Jerusalem during the Intifada. In Beit Jala, the Christian town on the outskirts of Bethlehem, Islamic sharpshooters established their firing positions next to churches and Christian institutions and aimed. The target was the southern Jerusalem residential Jewish neighborhood of Gilo, but ultimately they also wanted to cleanse any Christians from the area. The result is that 25,000 Christians left Beit Jala and only 6,000 Christians still live in that town. The Jews have always challenged any kind of totalitarianism and today are the first in line to challenge a political Islam that wants to destroy their soul: the State of Israel. The Palestinian Christians stand today at the opposite side of the barricade. One day they may realize the strategic mistake they made by embracing Palestinian fascism, but it will be too late for all of them.

Britain files request for EU sanctions on Hezbollah

Today @ 09:29 MAY 22,13
By Andrew Rettman
BRUSSELS - The UK has asked EU countries to designate the military wing of Lebanese group Hezbollah as a terrorist entity.A British foreign ministry spokesman told the Reuters news agency on Tuesday (21 May): "We are calling for Europe to respond collectively and robustly following the atrocious terrorist attack at Burgas airport ... We firmly believe that an appropriate EU response would be to designate Hezbollah's military wing as a terrorist organisation."He added that it would help to stop "future attacks ... on European soil."Bulgaria in February said the preliminary results of its investigation into a bomb blast in Burgas, on Bulgaria's Black Sea coast, in July last year indicated that Hezbollah organised the strike. It killed five Israeli tourists and a local bus driver and injured 32 other people.Cyprus in March also jailed a Lebanese-Swedish man on charges of scouting Israeli targets for another attack by the group. Its support for the Syrian regime has further blackened its name.Up to 6,000 Hezbollah fighters are said to be in Damascus, where they guard the Sayyidah Zaynab mosque, and in the Syrian towns of Homs and Qusayr near the Lebanese-Syrian border.Counter-terrorism specialists from EU countries will consider the British request, made last week, at a meeting in Brussels on 4 June.If all 27 states agree, it will become illegal for Hezbollah sympathisers in Europe to send it money and for EU governments or diplomats to meet its military staff. The UK already listed Hezbollah's military wing in 2008. The Netherlands listed the whole group in 2004.Germany has also voiced support for an EU-level designation. But France, the former colonial power in Lebanon, has voiced opposition. The French fear the move could destabilise Lebanon, where Hezbollah is a leading political party and a popular source of welfare. It could also ingrain the image of Europe as pandering to US-Israeli interests because many Arabs admire Hezbollah as the only force capable of hurting the Israeli army.Meanwhile, Italy, which contributes a large continent to a UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon, has voiced concern about revenge attacks. For its part, the US said on Tuesday the EU should follow the Dutch model by listing the whole group."Hezbollah's numerous branches and subsidiaries share common funding, personnel and leadership, all of which support the group's violent actions," state department spokesman Patrick Ventrell told AFP.British foreign minister William Hague also on Tuesday told his national parliament the UK will urge EU foreign ministers at a meeting in Brussels next Monday to relax a ban on arming Syrian rebels. He said the move would increase pressure for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to negotiate."The EU should give strong support to this diplomatic process, including by agreeing further amendments to the arms embargo, without taking any decisions at present to send arms to the Syrian opposition," he noted. The UK has so far this year shipped €14 million of "non-lethal" kit to rebel forces. The material includes armoured jeeps, body armour, trucks and forklifts, solar power generators, water purification kits, equipment to search for survivors in bombed out buildings, computers, satellite phones and office equipment.

Spanish province of Asturias says goodbye to “Christmas” and hello to “winter holidays”

The Asturian regional government has sent a circular to schools asking for all references to Christmas to be removed from the school calendar and replaced with “winter holidays”

Marco Tosatti Rome The Asturian government has decided to do its bit to help eradicate Spain’s Christian cultural roots. The regional government’s education minister, Doña Ana González Rodríguez, sent a circular round to all schools under her jurisdiction, asking them to remove the terms “Christmas” and “Holy Week” from the school calendar.Mrs. Gonzalez wants all references to Christianity to be replaced with equivalents such as “winter holidays” and “end of second term holidays” that are acceptable to everyone, including non Christians. There’s just one problem though. The decision was taken without consulting the schools in question or the parents. Naturally, the Observatory for Religious Freedom and Freedom of Conscience (OLRC) asked Mrs. Gonzalez to take into account common sentiment and respect for tradition and urged her to work towards ensuring young people get the rounded education they are so in need of at the moment. ORLC spokeswoman Maria Garcia criticised Mrs. Gonzalez’s brilliant attempt at trying to get people to forget Spain’s Christian roots.According to the Socialist government of the Principate of Asturias, this decision was taken so as “not to hurt peoples’ sensitivities.” Celebrations “have always been called Christmas and Holy Week/Easter and no one has been offended by that,” the ORLC argued. “But Asturia’s education minister thought she could achieve this week of nothingness without consulting the education community’s leading figures. At ORLC we cannot understand how exactly how people’s sensitivities are being offended and we are asking Doña Ana González to explain her reasons.”“The ORLC therefore urges the Minister to renounce her secularist aspirations, seeing as though Spain is a country with Christian roots , which cannot simply be forgotten from one minute to the next,” Maria Garcia added. One must not forget that the process of reconquering land invaded by the northern African Muslim invaders many centuries ago began in Asturias.Asturias’ socialist government is copying what many other European socialist governments seem to be doing. There was a heated controversy in Belgium in recent weeks, over a ministerial circular which banned people from talking about “Easter holidays”, replacing it instead with “spring holidays”. On this occasion too, the justification given was the need for secularised public institutions that would not “offend” non Christian immigrants. So November’s All Saints Day celebration will be called “autumn leave”; the Christmas holidays will become “winter holidays” and even the Carnival is being pushed aside and replaced with “relaxation leave”. Flemish and Waloon nationalists have spoken out against the umpteenth attempt to destroy Belgium’s Christian heritage.

3. The end is near.
In 1970, an unknown pastor from Texas wrote a book called “The Late, Great Planet Earth.” The book, which linked biblical prophecy with political events like Israel’s victory in the 1967 Six-Day War, predicted the imminent return of an antichrist and the end of the world.Author Hal Lindsey’s book has sold an estimated 15 million copies and spawned a genre of books like the “Left Behind” series. Many people are fascinated by the idea that the heavens will open soon because the end is near. That end-times theology can turn lethal, though, when a follower decides that he or she will speed up that end-time by conducting some dramatic or violent act, says John Alverson, chairman of the theology department at Carlow University in Pittsburgh.“A religious terrorist mistakenly believes that God has ordained or called him or her to establish the will of God on Earth now, not gradually and not according to the slow and finicky free will of other humans,” Alverson said.Yet this impulse to see God’s intervention in human affairs now and not in some distant future can also be good, he says. There are vibrant religious communities that teach that political and economic injustice must be addressed now. Liberation theology, for example, was a movement among pastors and theologians in Latin America that called for justice for the poor now, not in some future apocalyptic event, Alverson says.“Hope is a good breakfast but not much of a supper,” Alverson said. “We can’t just live on the hope that justice will happen; we have to actually experience justice from time to time so that our hope can continue.”

STORMS HURRICANES-TORNADOES

LUKE 21:25-26
25 And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity;(MASS CONFUSION) the sea and the waves roaring;(FIERCE WINDS)
26 Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.(FROM QUAKES,NUKES ETC)

THE FIRST JUDGEMENT OF THE EARTH STARTED WITH WATER-IT ONLY MAKES SENSE THE LAST GENERATION WILL BE HAVING FLOODING
GENESIS 7:6-12
6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.
8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,
9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.
10 And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.
GOD PROMISED BY A RAINBOW-THE EARTH WOULD NEVER BE DESTROYED TOTALLY WITH A FLOOD AGAIN.BUT FLOODIING IS A SIGN OF JUDGEMENT.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu sent a letter of condolence to President Barack Obama and the American people on Tuesday, following the disastrous Oklahoma tornado."Om behalf of the Government and people of Israel, I offer our heartfelt condolences to you and to the people of the United States on the massive tornado that struck in Oklahoma and exacted such a horrific toll in human life," the letter reads."Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims of this tragedy and their families at this difficult time."At least 24 people, including nine children, were killed when a massive tornado struck an area outside Oklahoma City on Monday afternoon, officials said, according to CNN.At least seven of those children were killed at Plaza Towers Elementary School in Moore, Oklahoma, police said.

At least 20 children among 91 feared dead in monster Oklahoma tornado

Reporters were cleared back from Plaza Towers Elementary School, which sustained a direct hit Oklahoma Lieutenant Governor Todd Lamb told CNN. But television pictures showed firefighters from more than a dozen fire departments working under bright spotlights to find survivors.President Barack Obama declared a major disaster area in Oklahoma, ordering federal aid to supplement state and local efforts in Moore after the deadliest U.S. tornado since one killed 161 people in Joplin, Missouri, two years ago. There was an outpouring of grief on Plaza Towers’ Facebook page, with messages from around the country including one pleading simply: “Please find those little children.”A separate Facebook page set up to reunite people in the area hit by a tornado on Sunday with their belongings and pets also showed entries for Moore residents overnight.Another elementary school, homes and a hospital were among the buildings leveled in Moore, leaving residents of the town of about 50,000 people stunned at the devastation and loss of life. Many residents were left without power and water. The Oklahoma medical examiner said 20 of the 91 expected to have been killed were children. The office had already confirmed 51 dead and had been told during the night by emergency services to expect 40 more bodies found in the debris, but had not yet received them.
At least 60 of the 240 people injured were children, area hospitals said. The National Weather Service assigned the twister a preliminary ranking of EF4 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, meaning the second most powerful category of tornado with winds up to 320 km/h.Witnesses said Monday’s tornado appeared more fierce than the giant twister that was among the dozens that tore up the area on May 3, 1999, killing more than 40 people and destroying thousands of homes. That tornado ranked as an EF5, meaning it had winds over 300 km/h.The 1999 event in Oklahoma ranks as the third-costliest tornado in U.S. history, having caused more than $1 billion in damage at the time, or more than $1.3 billion in today’s dollars. Only the devastating Joplin and Tuscaloosa tornadoes in 2011 were more costly. Jeff Alger, 34, who works in the Kansas oil fields on a fracking crew, said his wife Sophia took their children out of school when she heard a tornado was coming and then fled Moore and watched it flatten the town from a few miles away.
“They didn’t even have time to grab their shoes,” said Alger, who has five children aged four to 11. The storm tore part of the roof off of his home. He was with his wife at Norman Regional Hospital to have glass and other debris removed from his wife’s bare feet.Moore was devastated with debris everywhere, street signs gone, lights out, houses destroyed and vehicles tossed about as if they were toys. The dangerous storm system threatened several southern Plains states with more twisters. The area around Moore faces the risk of severe thunderstorms on Tuesday, which could hamper rescue efforts.Speaking outside Norman Regional Hospital Ninia Lay, 48, said she huddled in a closet through two storm alerts and the tornado hit on the third.
“I was hiding in the closet and I heard something like a train coming,” she said under skies still flashing with lightning. The house was flattened and Lay was buried in the rubble for two hours until her husband Kevin, 50, and rescuers dug her out.“I thank God for my cell phone, I called me husband for help.”Her daughter Catherine, seven, a first-grader at Plaza Towers Elementary School, took shelter with classmates and teachers in a bathroom when the tornado hit and destroyed the school. She escaped with scrapes and cuts.
The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center provided the town with a warning 16 minutes before the tornado touched down at 3:01 p.m. (2001 GMT), which is greater than the average eight to 10 minutes of warning, said Keli Pirtle, a spokeswoman for the centre in Norman, Oklahoma. The notice was upgraded to emergency warning with “heightened language” at 2:56 p.m., or five minutes before the tornado touched down, Pirtle said.Television media measured the tornado at more than 3 km. wide, with images showing entire neighborhoods flattened. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) imposed a temporary flight restriction that allowed only relief aircraft in the area, saying it was at the request of police who needed quiet to search for buried survivors.Oklahoma activated the National Guard, and the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency activated teams to support recovery operations and coordinate responses for multiple agencies.Briarwood Elementary School, which also stood in the storm’s path, was all but destroyed. On the first floor, sections of walls had been peeled away, giving clear views into the building; while in other areas, cars hurled by the storm winds were lodged in the walls. The number of injured as reported by several hospitals rose rapidly throughout the afternoon.“The whole city looks like a debris field,” Glenn Lewis, the mayor of Moore, told NBC.“It looks like we have lost our hospital. I drove by there a while ago and it’s pretty much destroyed,” Lewis said. The massive twister struck at the height of tornado season, and more were forecast. On Sunday, tornadoes killed two people and injured 39 in Oklahoma.

Massive tornado rips through Moore, Oklahoma; 37 killed, more feared dead

By | The Lookout – 3 hrs ago MAY 20,13
A devastating, mile-wide tornado touched down near Oklahoma City on Monday, killing at least 37 people, decimating homes, businesses and a pair of elementary schools in the suburb of Moore.According to the state's medical examiner, the death toll was expected to rise. The schools—Plaza Towers Elementary and Briarwood Elementary—were leveled by the tornado. It was unclear how many children were in them at the time the twister hit, but according to KFOR, at least seven children died at Plaza Towers, and as many as two dozen more were feared to be trapped inside the rubble. An Associated Press photographer saw rescue workers pull several children out alive. A makeshift triage center was set up in the school's parking lot.
"This is war-zone terrible," Jon Welsh, a helicopter pilot for KFOR who lives in Moore, said while surveying the damage from the air. "This school is completely gone."Emergency officials urged people to remain off the roads so rescue workers and first responders could reach people potentially trapped in rubble, as the National Guard was called in to help in the search for victims.Three people were killed at a 7-Eleven in the path of the storm, CBS' KWTV reported, including a man, woman and baby who took cover in a freezer but didn't survive. KFOR-TV reported a fourth person was killed there.

The funnel cloud could be seen for miles, creating a debris field several miles wide. According to the National Weather Service in Norman, Okla., the tornado was on the ground for approximately 40 minutes, moving 20 miles. A tornado warning was in effect for 16 minutes before twister developed, the NWS said.
Weather officials estimated the strength of the tornado to be an E-F4 or EF-5 on the Fujita scale, the highest rating a tornado can achieve. The National Weather Service said the tornado's preliminary classification was an EF-4, with winds up to 200 mph.On May 3, 1999, a tornado outbreak near Oklahoma City produced 14 tornadoes—including an F5 in Moore—killing 36 people and injuring 295 others. A host on KFOR called Monday's storm "the worst tornado damage-wise in the history of the world."Communication in the area was snarled as landlines and cell towers were knocked down. A water treatment plant in Oklahoma City was also damaged.President Barack Obama directed the Federal Emergency Management Agency to prepare to get "all available assistance" to the disaster-hit area, the White House said. The 106-acre Orr Family Farm was completely destroyed, killing between 75 and 100 horses, KFOR reported.Families of potential victims were directed by the Red Cross to a website—safeandwell.org—for information about survivors.Another, smaller tornado was spotted on the ground west of Meeker, Okla., north of Shawnee, on Monday. The Oklahoma House of Representatives canceled its afternoon sessions so lawmakers and staffers could take shelter, the AP said. The tornadoes came a day after powerful storms ripped through the center of the country, spawning at least a dozen tornadoes, killing two people and causing extensive damage from Georgia to Minnesota.

Monster tornado devastates area near Oklahoma City

By Lindsay Morris
TULSA, Oklahoma (Reuters) - A huge tornado flattened an area near Oklahoma City on Monday, tearing up at least two schools and leaving a wake of tangled wreckage as a dangerous storm system threatened as many as 10 U.S. states.Television video showed homes destroyed, cars tossed and at least one building on fire. Rescue workers were pulling third-graders from a damaged school in Moore, Oklahoma, a KFOR television reporter said from the scene."I have never seen anything like this in my 18 years covering tornadoes here in Oklahoma City. This is without question the most horrific," said Lance West, a reporter for KFOR television. There were no reports of deaths and the number of injuries remained unconfirmed after the tornado struck near Moore, in the Oklahoma City metropolitan area, in midafternoon."It seems that our worst fears have happened today," said Bill Bunting, National Weather Service meteorologist in Norman, Oklahoma. The massive twister struck at the height of tornado season, and more were forecast. On Sunday, tornadoes killed two people and injured 39 in Oklahoma.Witnesses said Monday's tornado appeared more fierce than the giant twister that was among the dozens that tore up the region on May 3, 1999, killing more than 40 people and destroying thousands of homes. That tornado ranked as an EF5, the highest on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, meaning it had winds over 200 mph.The 1999 event ranks as the third-costliest tornado in U.S. history, having caused more than $1 billion in damage at the time, or more than $1.3 billion when adjusted to today's dollars. Only the devastating Joplin and Tuscaloosa tornadoes in 2011 were more costly."We have many injured and we're just trying to work out how bad it is right now," said a woman who answered the phone at the Moore city manager's office. The National Weather Service predicted a 10 percent chance of tornadoes in parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri and Illinois. It said parts of four other states - Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan and Iowa - have a 5 percent risk of tornadoes.
The area at greatest risk includes Joplin, Missouri, which on Wednesday will mark two years since a massive tornado killed 161 people. The latest tornado in Oklahoma came as the state was still recovering from a strong storm on Sunday with fist-sized hail and blinding rain. Two men in their 70s died in the storm, including one at a mobile home park on the edge of the community of Bethel Acres near Oklahoma City, said Keli Cain, a spokeswoman for the Oklahoma Office of Emergency Management. Thirty-nine people were injured around the state as storms toppled trees and tore up rooftops, she said.Several hundred homes and buildings were thought to have been damaged or destroyed and approximately 7,000 customers were left without power in Oklahoma. "There is definitely quite a bit of damage," Cain said.Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin declared 16 counties disaster areas.
MULTIPLE TWISTERS
More than two dozen tornadoes were spotted in Iowa, Oklahoma, Kansas and Illinois, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and local news reports. Hail stones, some as large as baseballs, were reported from Georgia to Minnesota, NOAA said.Wind gusts of 72 miles per hour (115 kilometers per hour) were reported near Gardner, Kansas, and 60 mph in Atchison, Kansas. The high winds toppled trees, downing power lines and smashing cars and rooftops in communities around the Midwest.
A tornado that touched down southwest of Wichita, Kansas, on Sunday was rated an EF1 on Monday by the National Weather Service. The most powerful is an EF5. The tornado stayed on the ground for about 4.5 miles, with winds of 86-110 mph, the service said. The tornado damaged homes and outbuildings, felled trees and knocked out power to about 11,000 residents but caused no injuries, said Sharon Watson, spokeswoman for the Kansas Division of Emergency Management."We came through this one very fortunate," Watson said.In southwest Missouri, a tornado touched down shortly after midnight Monday in Barton County, said Tom Ryan, the county's director of emergency management. The tornado damaged some farm buildings and two houses but caused no injuries, he said, noting that it struck in a rural area.
Just east of Barton County, in Dade County, the tornado tore off roofs at a grocery store, golf course and city swimming pool complex in Lockwood, said Bob Kitsmiller, director of emergency management for the county, adding that no injuries were reported. The tornado season in the United States had been unusually quiet until last week, when a tornado struck the town of Granbury, Texas, killing six people.(Reporting by Carey Gillam, Nick Carey, Brendan O'Brien, Kevin Murphy and Steve Olafson; Writing by Greg McCune and Daniel Trotta)

Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon and the IDF said Tuesday that Israel has destroyed an unspecified Syrian target after fire from the Syrian side of the Golan Heights border damaged an IDF vehicle."We will not remain silent regarding fire from Syria at our territory," said Yaalon during a visit to a naval base in Haifa.
"First of all, our policy is clear regarding Syria," he said. "We do not intervene in the civil war there. However, regarding the situation in the Golan Heights – we do not enable and will not enable the fire to spill over into our territory."Tonight the Syrian Army target was destroyed after this kind of fire spilled over into our territory in the Golan Heights," he said. The Syrian army said Tuesday that it has destroyed an IDF vehicle in the Golan Heights, AFP reported. The IDF denied this but admitted that the vehicle had been damaged."Our armed forces have destroyed an Israeli vehicle with everything that it had in it... The vehicle had crossed the ceasefire line and was moving towards the village of Bir Ajam, situated in the liberated Syrian zone" of the Golan, it said. The statement refers to an incident that took place overnight, in which IDF soldiers patrolling the Golan Heights along the border with Syria fired back after coming under fire.
The Syrian army "fired on an Israeli patrol, which we confirmed six hours ago, but did not destroy a vehicle or kill anyone," Israeli military spokesman Avichai Adraee wrote on Twitter. An Israeli Defense Forces statement said Tuesday, "Overnight, shots were fired at an IDF patrol on the border in the central Golan Heights, damaging a military vehicle." No one had been wounded, it added."In response, IDF forces returned precise fire at the source of the gunfire. They reported a direct hit," the statement added.
"The IDF views the recent incidents in the north with concern and has lodged a complaint with UNDOF," the UN Disengagement Force responsible for patrolling that area.Early on Monday, the army reported that small-arms fire from Syria hit the Israeli Golan Heights overnight, causing no harm or damage. The army also filed a complaint with the UN force on that occasion. The Golan Heights have been tense since the beginning of the conflict in Syria more than two years ago. However, there have been only minor flare-ups in the region to date, with Syrian shells crashing in the Golan and Israel firing in retaliation.

North Korea fires sixth missile in three days

By Chookyung Kim
SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea fired two short-range missiles on Monday, making six launches in three days, and it condemned South Korea for criticizing what it said were its legitimate military drills.South Korea's Defense Ministry said North Korea had fired one missile on Monday morning and a second one in the afternoon. Both were fired into the sea off North Korea's east coast, a ministry official said. The launches come hard on the heels of more than two months of threats from North Korea that it would wage a nuclear war against South Korea and the United States if it were attacked. The North condemned joint U.S. and South Korean military exercises, that ended in late April, as a rehearsal for an attack on its territory."We are conducting intense military exercises to strengthen our defense capacity," North Korea's KCNA news agency quoted the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of Korea, the body that handles inter-Korean issues, as saying on Monday."Our military is conducting these exercises in order to cope with the mounting war measures from the U.S. and South Korea, which is the legitimate right of any sovereign country."North Korea frequently fires short-range missiles, although the current spate of launches has drawn criticism from South Korea and the United States after the recent threats from the North.Seoul on Monday condemned the launches for stoking tension in the region while Beijing, the North's sole major ally, called for restraint."These launches are its tactic of signaling to the world that the regime is willing to negotiate now, while at the same time saving face," Kim Yeon-su, a professor at Korea National Defense University in Seoul, which is part of the Defense Ministry, said of North Korea.Kim said that North Korea had an arsenal of hundreds of short- and medium-range missiles. There appears to be little prospect of talks between North Korea and the United States as Washington insists that Pyongyang needs to abandon its nuclear weapons program, something the isolated and impoverished state has said it will not do.(Editing by Robert Birsel)

Religious freedom report from State Department cites concern about leaders of Venezuela, Iran, and Egypt condoning anti-Semitism, verging on ‘desecration and violence’

WASHINGTON (AP) — The State Department appointed a special envoy to monitor and combat anti-Semitism around the world Monday as a new report documents a global increase in incidents of anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial.Ira Forman, former CEO of the National Jewish Democratic Council, was named special envoy as the State Department released its annual report on religious freedom around the world. Forman replaces Michael Kozak, who had served in an acting role after Hannah Rosenthal stepped down last year. The 2012 report on religious freedom said expressions of anti-Semitism by government officials, religious leaders were of great concern, particularly in Venezuela, Egypt and Iran. At times, such statements led to desecration and violence, the report said.“When political leaders condoned anti-Semitism, it set the tone for its persistence and growth in countries around the world,” the report said.In Venezuela, government-controlled media published numerous anti-Semitic statements, particularly in regard to opposition presidential candidate Henrique Capriles, a Catholic with Jewish ancestors, the report said.
In Egypt, anti-Semitic sentiment in the media was widespread and sometimes included Holocaust denial or glorification, the report said. The report cited an Oct. 19 incident in which Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi said “Amen” after a religious leader stated, “Oh Allah, destroy the Jews and their supporters.”
The Iranian government regularly vilified Judaism, and vandals in Ukraine desecrated several Holocaust memorials, the report said. Vandals in Russia painted a swastika on a fence at a St. Petersburg synagogue and on a synagogue wall in Irkutsk.“Even well into the 21st century, traditional forms of anti-Semitism, such as conspiracy theories, use of the discredited myth of “blood libel” and cartoons demonizing Jews continued to flourish,” the report said.Secretary of State John Kerry called the report a “clear-eyed, objective look at the state of religious freedom around the world,” and said that in some cases, the report “does directly call out some of our close friends, as well as some countries with whom we seek stronger ties.”Kerry called the report an attempt to make progress around the world, “even though we know that it may cause some discomfort.”When countries undermine or attack religious freedom, “they not only unjustly threaten those whom they target, they also threaten their countries’ own stability,” Kerry said at a news conference, calling religious freedom a basic human right. Kerry urged countries identified in the report to take action to safeguard religious freedoms.Besides anti-Semitism, the report also notes frequent government restrictions on religion and policies that make it hard for citizens to choose or practice their faith.“Governments that repress freedom of religion and freedom of expression typically create a climate of intolerance and impunity that emboldens those who foment hatred and violence within society,” the report said, singling out China, North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Russia and Cuba, among other countries, for criticism. The report also cites the use of blasphemy laws to harass, detain and abuse government critics, especially in the Middle East and North Africa. In Saudi Arabia, the report cited incidents in which activists were arrested and charged with apostasy and blasphemy, offenses that carry potential death penalties.Kerry, who took office earlier this year after incidents highlighted in the report took place, thanked a “broad spectrum” of faith leaders, religious organizations and journalists who participated in the report, many at great personal risk.“Governments around the globe continue to detain, imprison, torture and even kill people for their religious beliefs,” Kerry said. “In too many places, governments are also failing to protect minorities from social discrimination and violence” against religious groups including Buddhists, Hindus, Jews, Christians, Muslims and Sikhs.
Abraham Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League, said the appointment of Forman as anti-Semitism envoy showed that U.S. resolve to fight anti-Semitism is serious and ongoing. The ADL is confident Forman “will play an important role in ensuring that the significant political will and diplomatic resources of the U.S. are brought to bear to urge foreign governments to take action” against anti-Semitism, Foxman said.

Merkel: Hollande's euro government idea 'interesting'

17.05.13 @ 14:26
By EUOBSERVER
BERLIN - German Chancellor Angela Merkel finds "interesting" the idea proposed by French President Francois Hollande of a eurozone-only government, her spokesman said Friday. But he also pointed to the fact that eurozone leaders meet at least twice a year and that eurobonds continue to be a taboo topic in Germany.

Hollande calls for euro government to beat recession

17.05.13 @ 09:25
Berlin - French President Francois Hollande has called for the creation of a eurozone government as a solution to the wide-spread recession that threatens "the very identity" of Europe.Hollande spelled out his views on Europe during a two-and-a-half hour long press conference in Paris on Thursday (16 May) after being accused of lacking leadership and vision for the EU project. With record low popularity rates and on the back of news that France has slipped back into recession, Hollande said an economic government for the eurozone, with its own budget, right to borrow and harmonised taxes, is the only way out the economic slump."It is my responsibility as leader of a founding member of the European Union... to pull Europe out of the lethargy that has gripped it," Hollande said."If Europe stays in the state it is now, it could be the end of the project," he warned.Hollande said he can imagine the new structures - which would require a change to the EU treaties - to come into force within two years. He admitted that this step towards deeper eurozone integration would be a hard sell in Germany, where the idea of a "transfer union" - mutualising debt and redistributing wealth across the bloc - is taboo."Germany has several times said it is ready for political union, for a new phase in integration. Well France is ready to give body to this political union ... It is a question of European urgency," he said.He argued that while the financial crisis is now "behind us ... what is hitting Europe is recession, provoked by austerity policies."The German government is seen as a staunch defender of austerity policies, even though it has changed its discourse in the past few months and speaks more about youth unemployment.Amid debate on the lack of personal chemistry in current Franco-German relations, Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin noted that she is not "bosom friends" with Hollande, but that they "get along fine.""What we need above all is a common understanding in Europe - and there unfortunately isn't one yet - of what actually makes us strong and where growth comes from," she said at a European policy forum also on Thursday.

Pope’s alleged exorcism was in fact a prayer

The director of TV2000, the television channel of the Italian Bishops’ Conference, claims it was not Francis' intention to perform an exorcism yesterday. Fr. Lombardi has also denied any such suggestion

vatican insider staff rome “The Pope showed the boy his undivided attention for a few moments and gave him a special blessing; it was not an exorcism,” Dino Boffo, the director of TV2000, the television channel of the Italian Bishops’ Conference, said, in a live comment to the television channel about Francis’ prayer near the Arch of the Bells last Sunday. “As the television channel’s director, I cannot break the pact of transparency and trust between us and our viewers,” Boffo said. “I admit that this incident has left me with a certain feeling of discomfort and bitterness as I unconsciously gave the go ahead for the publication of a piece of news that was true but only partly so, because the Pope denies having performed an exorcism.” “I am not putting the blame on anyone, I accept full responsibility for what happened and I want to apologise for distorting the facts and for all those involved. I especially would like to apologise to the Holy Father,” the director of TV2000 stressed. It was not our intention to attribute to the Pope an act which he had no intention of performing,” Boffo assured the public. “There was nothing scandalous about the Pope’s act which today’s newspapers have reported on and although it doesn’t reflect well on us, we have learnt from our mistake and it will not happen again.”“We have come under the spot light when it was not our intention to do so and I personally did not wish for this. We are in this against our will,” Boffo added. TV2000’s director explained the situation as such: “According to last Sunday’s press, towards the end of the Pentecost mass, as the Pope went round to greet the sick, one boy in particular caught is attention so he spent a little longer than usual with him, laying his hands on the sick boy’s head to bless him. The priest who was accompanying him explained the boy’s situation to the Pope.” “I wondered whether this was an exorcism or something similar but kept the thought to myself.” Then, yesterday morning, a colleague who is responsible for preparing the “Vade Retro Satana” programme and had seen the scene, came into the studio and asked me for authorisation to work on it.”

Boffo agreed, but on two conditions: one that they consult an expert on Pope Francis’ movements and gestures at the time and two, that they speak to Fr. Lombardi  to confirm what the Pope’s gesture had actually been about,” Boffo said. “He then asked me if TV2000 could publish a sneak preview of the news on its website, to help publicise the programme,” Boffo continued, adding: “once all verifications have been made, that won’t be a problem. We can include a sober version of the story in the news and in the preview we’ll refer to it as “exorcism or something similar.” “Only the person who performs the exorcism can say whether they are performing an exorcism or giving a blessing or a prayer of liberation. Fr. Lombardi sent a brief and polite communiqué and this morning he was kind enough to appear on our channel and explain what had happened.”Yesterday evening, the director of the Vatican Press Office, Fr. Federico Lombardi confirmed that Pope Francis’ intention in St. Peter’s Square “had not been to perform an exorcism, but simply to pray for a suffering person whom he had been introduced to.”But Fr. Amorth, a priest and exorcist, says Francis’ act “was an exorcism alright and if Fr. Lombardi denies this, he clearly does not have a clue.” Fr. Gabriele Amorth expressed his view on the Pope’s gesture last Sunday, on Italian radio show, “Un Giorno da Pecora”. “That was a real exorcism and what is more, the boy the Pope exorcised came to me at 11:30 today.,” Fr. Amorth said. What did the little boy have? “He wasn’t a little boy, he is 43 years old and has a wife and children. His name is Angelo and he is possessed by four demons . I performed a long exorcism on him today.” When asked whether the Pope had not then been able to cure him, Fr. Amorth replied: “What he did does qualify as an exorcism because an exorcism is also performed by placing one’s hands on a person’s head and praying, without resorting to written exorcisms.”“First the Pope met with these young people, then a priest approached the Pope and told him the boy was Mexican and was possessed by four demons,” Amorth explained. The priest’s name is Jaun Rivas and he is a Legionary of Christ. According to Amorth, in this particular case, “the devil wants to take revenge on Mexican bishops because they did not oppose abortion as they should have done. The young boy will only be freed when these Mexican bishops do penance for not intervening.”So Fr. Amorth smashed the Vatican Press Offices’ claim the Pope’s act was not an exorcism, to pieces, saying “if they deny this, they really have no clue.” “Exorcism,” he said “is not limited to a set of ritualistic rules, written prayers used exclusively in exorcism cases. Prayers of liberation said in one’s own words can also be considered types of exorcism. I can quote three cases of John Paul II performing exorcisms without an exorcism book.”

His name id Ferruccio Brambillasca and he begins his new role after working as regional superior of PIME in Tokyo. Brambillasca was elected this morning after receiving a two-thirds majority vote from participants at the XIV General Assembly of PIME being held in Rome since the start of the month. He will be leading the missionary institute for the next six years, taking over from Fr. Gianbattista Zanchi, who completed two mandates as superior general.Fr. Brambillasca is from Brianza in northern Italy  and will celebrate his 49th birthday in just a few days. He is currently superior of the PIME community in Japan, where he has been carrying out his ministry since 1998. He was born in Agrate Brianza the same town in northern Italy where PIME missionary Clemente Vismara comes from. Vismara, who was proclaimed “Patriarch of Burma” by the local bishops’ conference, was beatified in Milan in 2011 (“I became a missionary after reading his letters. As a youngster I was really struck by them,” he said). PIME’s new superior has a degree in dogmatic theology from Naples, after discussing the “silence of God” with Italian theologian Bruno Forte. Before his mission in Japan, he taught in the Seminary of Pune in India. In Japan he had the experience of working in the tiny parish of Choschi on the outskirts of Tokyo. The community was made up of just a few dozen Christians in an area of Buddhists. Here, he had simple encounters with many non Christians. He then moved on to Seijo, one of Tokyo’s biggest parishes.Alongside Fr. Brambillasca, PIME’s General Assembly also elected the team that will assist him. Guinea Bissau missionary, Fr. Davide Sciocco (49), has been elected Vicar General. Angelo Ramazzotti (who was Patriarch of Venice at the time) founded the Institute in Milan, in 1850. It was set up as a Lombard Seminary for foreign missions. In 1926, Pius XI decided the Institute should be merged with the Pontifical Seminary of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul for the Foreign Missions. It founded in Rome by Mgr. Pietro Avanzini, turning into PIME. There are currently about 450 PIME missionaries working in Algeria, Bangladesh, Brazil, Cambodia, Cameroon, Chad, China and Hong Kong, the Ivory Coast, the Philippines, Japan, Guinea Bissau, India, Mexico, Myanmar (Burma), Papua New Guinea, Taiwan, Thailand and the United States.
