A U.S. Army training instructor listed Evangelical Christianity and
Catholicism as examples of religious extremism along with Al Qaeda and
Hamas during a briefing with an Army Reserve unit based in Pennsylvania,
Fox News has learned.“We find this offensive to have Evangelical Christians and the
Catholic Church to be listed among known terrorist groups,” said Ron
Crews, executive director of the Chaplain Alliance for Religious
Liberty. “It is dishonorable for any U.S. military entity to allow this
type of wrongheaded characterization.”

The incident occurred during an Army Reserve Equal Opportunity
training brief on extremism. Topping the list is Evangelical
Christianity. Other organizations listed included Catholicism, Al Qaeda,
Hamas, the Ku Klux Klan, Sunni Muslims, and Nation of Islam.The military also listed “Islamophobia” as a form of religious extremism.Army spokesman George Wright told Fox News that this was an “isolated incident not condoned by the Dept. of the Army.”“This slide was not produced by the Army and certainly does not
reflect our policy or doctrine,” he said. “It was produced by an
individual without anyone in the chain of command’s knowledge or
permission.”Wright said after the complaint was lodged, the presenter deleted the slide, and apologized.“We consider the matter closed,” he said.The incident was made public by a soldier who attended the briefing.
He asked for copies of the presentation and sent them to the Chaplain
Alliance.
“He considers himself an evangelical Christian and did not appreciate
being classified with terrorists,” Crews told Fox News. “There was a
pervasive attitude in the presentation that anything associated with
religion is an extremist.”The Archdiocese for the Military Services was shocked to learn that
the Army considered Catholicism to be an example of extremism.“The Archdiocese is astounded that Catholics were listed alongside
groups that are, by their very mission and nature, violent and
extremist,” the Archdiocese said in a statement.They want the Dept. of Defense to “ensure that taxpayer funds are
never again used to present blatantly anti-religious material to the men
and women in uniform.”

“Why is there such dependence upon the work of the SPLC to determine
hate groups and extremist groups,” Crews said. “It appears that some
military entities are using definitions of ‘hate’ and ‘extreme’ from the
lists of anti-Christian political organizations. That violates the
apolitical stance appropriate for the military.”But Mark Potok, a spokesman for the Southern Poverty Law Center, told
Fox News they did not provide the military with any list about
religious extremism.“It’s emphatically – 100 percent false,” Potok said.He said the SPLC has never labeled Evangelical Christianity or Catholicism as extremist groups.
Crews said he is extremely disappointed in the military’s handling of
the incident and said they need to fix the “gross distortions presented
in the briefing.“Those soldiers who were presented this material – they need to have a
new briefing with corrected materials,” Crews said. “They need to undo
the damage that was done.”
He also wants the military to consult with chaplains about matters involving religion.“All religious issues of this sort in the U.S. military should be
channeled first through the Chiefs of Chaplains offices for review,” he
said. “Do they really want to classify evangelicals and the Catholic
Church as extremist groups?”

also continue to expand.China imported $1.8 trillion worth of goods and
services last year, up a meager 4.3 percent from a year ago as its
economy slumped into its worst downturn in 13 years.
But Xi was upbeat about the future, saying growth would
follow when his government changes China's economic structure and
financial system. He did not give details."China's economy will continue to maintain a healthy
growth rate," Xi said. "We will persist with reforms and doggedly pursue
the path of changing our economic ways."In contrast, an ailing global economy faces a difficult recovery fraught with risks, he said.
Xi's message of China's peaceful and inclusive rise was
echoed earlier when nearly a dozen senior executives from Chinese
state-owned firms met peers from top Australian banks and companies.Andrew Forrest, an Australian iron ore magnate and
founder of Fortescue Metals Group, who chaired the closed-door meeting,
told reporters that Chinese state firm executives wanted Australians to

SKorea: NKorea may be preparing to test missile

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — A top South Korean national security official said Sunday that North Korea may be setting the stage for a missile test or another provocative act with its warning that it soon will be unable to guarantee diplomats' safety in Pyongyang. But he added that the North's clearest objective is to extract concessions from Washington and Seoul.North Korea's warning last week followed weeks of war threats and
other efforts to punish South Korea and the U.S. for ongoing joint
military drills, and for their support of U.N. sanctions over
Pyongyang's Feb. 12 nuclear test. Many nations are deciding what to do
about the notice, which said their diplomats' safety in Pyongyang cannot
be guaranteed beginning this Wednesday.Tensions between Seoul
and Pyongyang led South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff to announce
Sunday that its chairman had put off a visit to Washington. The U.S.
military said its top commander in South Korea had also canceled a trip
to Washington. The South Korean defense minister said Thursday that
North Korea had moved a missile with "considerable range" to its east
coast, possibly to conduct a test launch.
His description suggests that the missile could be the Musudan
missile, capable of striking American bases in Guam with its estimated
range of up to 4,000 kilometers (2,490 miles).Citing North Korea's suggestion that diplomats leave the country, South Korean President Park
Geun-hye's national security director said Pyongyang may be planning a
missile launch or another provocation around Wednesday, according to
presidential spokeswoman Kim Haing.During a meeting with other South Korean officials, the official, Kim
Jang-Soo, also said the notice to diplomats and other recent North
Korean actions are an attempt to stoke security concerns and to force
South Korea and the U.S. to offer a dialogue. Washington and Seoul want
North Korea to resume the six-party nuclear talks — which also include
China, Russia and Japan — that it abandoned in 2009.The roughly two dozen countries with embassies in North Korea had not yet announced whether they would evacuate their staffs.British Foreign Secretary William Hague suggested that North Korea's
comments about foreign diplomats are "consistent" with a regime that is
using the prospect of an external threat to justify its militarization
to its people."I haven't seen any immediate need to respond to that by moving our
diplomats out of there," he told the BBC on Saturday. "We will keep this
under close review with our allies, but we shouldn't respond and play
to that rhetoric and that presentation of an external threat every time
they come out with it."Germany said its embassy in Pyongyang would stay open for at least the time being."The situation there is tense but calm," a German Foreign Office

in an email. "The security and danger of the situation is constantly

to evacuate its diplomats. A statement released by the ministry on
Saturday said that its embassy in Pyongyang has been preparing a
contingency plan to anticipate the worst-case scenario, and that the
Indonesian foreign minister is communicating with the staff there to
monitor the situation.India also said it was monitoring events. "We have been informed
about it," said Syed Akbaruddin, spokesman for India's external affairs
ministry. "We are in constant touch with our embassy and are monitoring
the situation. We will carefully consider all aspects and decide well in
time."Seoul and Washington, which lack diplomatic relations with the North,
are taking the threats seriously, though they say they have seen no
signs that Pyongyang is preparing for a large-scale attack.Kim Jang-soo said the North would face "severalfold damages" for any
hostilities. Since 2010, when attacks Seoul blames on North Korea killed
50 people, South Korea has vowed to aggressively respond to any future
attack.South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Jung Seung-jo had
planned to meet with his U.S. counterpart, Gen. Martin Dempsey, in
Washington on April 16 for regular talks. But tensions on the Korean
Peninsula are so high that Jung cannot take a long trip away from South
Korea, so the meeting will be rescheduled, a South Korean Joint Chiefs
officer said Sunday. The officer spoke on condition of anonymity, citing
office policy.
The top U.S. military commander in South Korea, Gen. James Thurman,
will not make a planned trip to Washington this week to testify before
Congress because of tensions with North Korea. In an email Sunday to The
Associated Press, Army Col. Amy Hannah said Thurman would remain in
Seoul as "a prudent measure." He was scheduled to testify on Tuesday and
Wednesday.The U.S. Defense Department has delayed an intercontinental ballistic
missile test that had been planned for this week because of concerns
the launch could be misinterpreted and exacerbate the Korean crisis, a
senior defense official told The Associated Press.Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel decided to delay the test at an Air
Force base in California until sometime next month, the official said
Saturday. The official was not authorized to speak publicly about the
test delay and requested anonymity.In recent weeks, the U.S. has followed provocations from North Korea
with shows of force connected to the joint exercises with South Korea.
It has sent nuclear capable B-2 and B-52 bombers and stealth F-22
fighters to participate in the drills.In addition, the U.S. said last week that two of the Navy's
missile-defense ships were moved closer to the Korean Peninsula, and a
land-based missile-defense system is being deployed to the Pacific
territory of Guam later this month. The Pentagon last month announced
longer-term plans to strengthen its U.S.-based missile defenses.The U.S. military also is considering deploying an intelligence drone
at the Misawa Air Base in northern Japan to step up surveillance of
North Korea, a Japanese Defense Ministry official said Sunday.Three Global Hawk surveillance planes are deployed on Guam and one of
them is being considered for deployment in Japan, the official said on
condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to speak
about the issue.
Also on Sunday, Iran's foreign ministry urged all sides to exercise restraint and not to move toward "provocative behavior.""We think that the event that is intensifying between North Korea, South Korea
and the United states should be controlled as soon as possible,"
Iran's semi-official Mehr news agency quoted foreign ministry spokesman
Ramin Mehmanparast as saying. "Both parties should not move toward a
corner in which there is a threatening climate."Mehmanparast's comments came two days after Gen. Masoud Jazayeri, the
deputy chief of staff of Iran's armed forces, reportedly said that
North Korea had "no choice except confronting the U.S."North Korea successfully shot a satellite into space in December and
conducted its third nuclear test in February. It has threatened to
launch a nuclear attack on the United States, though many analysts say
the North hasn't achieved the technology to manufacture a miniaturized
nuclear warhead that could fit on a long-range missile capable of
hitting the U.S.North Korea also raised tensions Wednesday when it barred South
Koreans and supply trucks from entering the Kaesong industrial complex,
where South Korean companies have employed thousands of North Korean
workers for the past decade.North Korea is not forcing South Korean managers to leave the factory
complex, and nearly 520 of them remained at Kaesong on Sunday. But the
entry ban at the park, the last remaining inter-Korean rapprochement
project, is posing a serious challenge to many of the more than 120
South Korean firms there because they are running out of raw materials
and are short on replacement workers.Nine more firms, including food and textile companies, have stopped
operations at Kaesong, bringing to 13 the total number of companies that

China warned against "troublemaking" on its doorstep, in an apparent rebuke to
North Korea, and the
United States said it was postponing a missile test to help calm high tension on the divided
Korean peninsula.
The North, led by 30-year-old Kim Jong-un, has been issuing vitriolic threats of war against the United States and U.S.-backed
South Korea since the United Nations imposed sanctions in response to its third nuclear weapon test in February.
Pyongyang's anger appears heightened by U.S.-South
Korean
joint military exercises. But most analysts say it has no intention of
starting a conflict that would bring its own destruction and instead is
out to wring concessions from a nervous international community.The North told diplomats late last week to consider
leaving Pyongyang because of the tension, but embassies appeared to view
the appeal as more rhetoric and staff have stayed put.South Korea said it was ready for any kind of action
that the North's unpredictable leaders might make - including a possible
missile launch - by Wednesday, after which the North said it could not
guarantee diplomats' safety.China, North Korea's sole financial and diplomatic
backer, has shown growing irritation with Pyongyang's warnings of
nuclear war.
Chinese President Xi Jinping, addressing a forum on the
southern island of Hainan, did not name North Korea but said no country
"should be allowed to throw a region and even the whole world into
chaos for selfish gain".Stability in Asia, he said, "faces new challenges, as
hot spot issues keep emerging and both traditional and non-traditional
security threats exist".Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed similar
frustration in a statement late on Saturday, relating a telephone
conversation with U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon."We oppose provocative words and actions from any party
in the region and do not allow trouble making on China's doorstep,"
Wang said, according to a ministry statement on its website.On Sunday, the ministry expressed "grave concern" at
rising tension and said China had asked North Korea to "ensure the
safety of Chinese diplomats in North Korea, in accordance with the
Vienna Convention and international laws and norms".China's embassy, it said, was "understood" to be operating normally in Pyongyang.Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard, addressing the
Hainan forum, said avoiding conflict on the peninsula was vital.
"There, any aggression is a threat to the interests of every country in
the region," she said.
British Foreign Minister William Hague said North Korea's nuclear ambitions had to be taken seriously.
Interviewed by Sky News, he said the international
response "should also be very clear, very united and calm at all times
because it's important not to feed that frenetic rhetoric that we've
seen over the last few weeks".
Switzerland's Foreign Ministry offered to mediate,
saying it was "always willing to help find a solution, if this is the
wish of the parties, such as hosting meetings between them".Kim, the third member of his dynasty to rule North
Korea, is thought to have spent several years in Switzerland being
educated under a pseudonym. He took over in December 2011 after the
death of his father Kim Jong-il, who confronted South Korea and the
United States throughout his 17-year rule.
FEAR OF "MISCALCULATION"
In Washington, a defense official said a long-scheduled
test of the Minuteman III intercontinental missile, due to take place
at the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, would be postponed."This test ... has been delayed to avoid any
misperception or miscalculation in light of recent tensions on the
Korean peninsula," the official said on Saturday. "This is the logical,
prudent and responsible course of action to take."He said the test had been unconnected to "anything
related to North Korea" and added that another test launch could be
expected next month. The United States remained fully prepared to
respond to any North Korean threat, the official said.The South Korean president's office said the country
had a "firm military readiness" for any eventuality. It described as
"planned behavior" the North's call for South Korean workers to leave
the Kaesong joint industrial park, just inside North Korea, and for
diplomats to evacuate Pyongyang by Wednesday."Ahead of that time, a situation like a North Korean
missile launch could occur," Kim Haing, a spokeswoman for the
presidential Blue House, quoted the chief of the National Security
office as saying. "As of now, there are no signs of all-out war, but if a
local conflict breaks out, North Korea should be aware that it will pay
the price."South Korean media said on Friday the North had moved
two medium-range missiles to the country's east coast, but there has
been no confirmation of such a move.The North has always condemned joint exercises off the
South Korean coast, but its rhetoric has been especially furious this
year as the United States sent nuclear-capable stealth bombers from
their home bases.North Korean state television showed a military
training session, with soldiers putting dogs through their paces,
including one seen tearing to pieces an effigy of South Korean Defense
Minister Kim Kwan-jin. Soldiers were shown firing at pictures of the
minister and a depiction of a U.S. serviceman."As you all know, on the Korean peninsula, it is not a
matter of whether we will have a war or not, but whether it will take
place today or tomorrow," an unidentified soldier said."This is a situation like being on the eve of a big
explosion. Every minute, every second counts. We are right now set to
march, once the order is given."There was no evidence of any tension in the South
Korean capital, Seoul, with residents strolling in the city center on a
chilly spring day.

Lawmaker: Iran will never halt nuclear program

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — A top Iranian lawmaker declared Sunday that Iran will never halt its nuclear development program, a day after the latest round of international talks failed to reach agreement on the issue.Alaeddin Boroujerdi said the talks were "considered effective and a step forward," but he added, "the Islamic Republic of Iran will never stop uranium enrichment activities."Boroujerdi, who heads a parliamentary committee on national security
and foreign policy, said the talks should continue. He was quoted by the
ISNA news agency.Western powers are concerned that Iran may move toward production of nuclear weapons. Iran denies that, insisting that its program is peaceful.World powers have repeatedly demanded that Iran close down its Fordo
underground uranium enrichment plant that is enriching uranium up to 20
percent. Uranium that is enriched to 90 percent can be used in weapons.The U.N. has enacted four rounds of economic sanctions against Iran to try to force it to curtail its program, but Iran has remained defiant.
"If one day the (Iranian)
administration decides to close down Fordo, the parliament will oppose
the decision, definitely," Boroujerdi was quoted as saying. He said Iran
will continue reinforcing the plant because of foreign threats. Both
the U.S. and Israel have hinted at military action against
Iran's nuclear facilities if diplomacy fails.
Ali Akbar Velayati,
an adviser to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, blamed the
West for failure at the weekend talks in Almaty, Kazakhstan. "The talks
showed that the West is not honest in its remarks," he told reporters.He said Western powers cannot achieve progress "if they do not acknowledge Iran's natural rights" to enrich uranium.Velayati is seen a leading candidate for June elections to pick a successor to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.The comments were the first by top Iranian officials after the talks
Friday and Saturday between Iran and the five permanent members of the
U.N. Security Council plus Germany.
