NAVY SEAL BOOK ABOUT BIN LADIN TO COME OUT

KING JESUS IS COMING FOR US ANY TIME NOW. THE RAPTURE. BE PREPARED TO GO.

THE WORDS THE WORLD DOES NOT WANT TO HEAR.JUNE 6-10,1967.THE TEMPLE MOUNT IS IN OUR ISRAELIS HANDS FOREVER,NEVER TO BE GIVEN TO ANOTHER PEOPLE. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7l1ol69rRxo REBUILD THE 3RD TEMPLE NOW ISRAEL.GOD IS WITH YOU.

Israeli Reaction to the Recapture of the Western Wall and the Old City of Jerusalem JUNE 6-10,1967

“For some two thousand years the Temple Mount was forbidden to the Jews. Until you came — you, the paratroopers — and returned it to the bosom of the nation. The Western Wall, for which every heart beats, is ours once again. Many Jews have taken their lives into their hands throughout our long history, in order to reach Jerusalem and live here. Endless words of longing have expressed the deep yearning for Jerusalem that beats within the Jewish heart..You have been given the great privilege of completing the circle, of returning to the nation its capital and its holy center...Jerusalem is yours forever.”
–Commander Motta Gur to his brigade upon their recapture of Jerusalem’s Old City and holy sites
“We have returned to all that is holy in our land. We have returned never to be parted from it again.”
–Defense Minister Moshe Dayan, upon reaching the Western Wall
“The Wall was before us. I trembled. There it was as I had known it—immense, mighty, in all its splendor...overcome, I bowed my head in silence.”
–General Uzi Narkiss, Head of Central Command during the Six Day War
“I felt truly shaken and stood there murmuring a prayer for peace. Motta Gur’s paratroopers were struggling to reach the Wall and toudh it. We stood among a tangle of rugged, battle-weary men who were unable to believe their eyes or restrain their emotions. Their eyes were moist with tears, their speech incoherent. The overwhelming desire was to cling to the Wall, to hold on to that great moment as long as possible.”
–Chief of Staff Yitzchak Rabin
“I am speaking to you from the plaza of the Western Wall, the remnant of our Holy Temple. ‘Comfort my people, comfort them, says the Lord your God.’ This is the day we have hoped for, let us rejoice and be glad in His salvation. The vision of all generations is being realized before our eyes: The city of God, the site of the Temple, the Temple Mount and the Western Wall, the symbol of the nation’s redemption, have been redeemed today by you, heroes of the Israel Defense Forces. By doing so you have fulfilled the oath of generations, ‘If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, may my right hand forget its cunning.’ Indeed, we have not forgotten you, Jerusalem, our holy city, our glory. In the name of the entire Jewish people in Israel and the Diaspora, I hereby recite with supreme joy, Blessed art Thou, O Lord our God, King of the universe, who has kept us in life, who has preserved us, and enabled us to reach this day. This year in Jerusalem – rebuilt! “
–General Shlomo Goren, Chaplain of the Israeli Defense Forces, at the Western Wall

Red Alert: Government Had Osama bin Laden Frozen for Years

CNN and the corporate media report this evening that purported CIA asset Osama bin Laden has been killed by the U.S. military in a mansion outside the Pakistani capital of Islamabad along with other family members. In an address to the nation, Obama said he ordered the strike that allegedly killed Osama. The remainder of his speech followed the standard war on terror propaganda script.A small team of Americans killed bin Laden in a firefight at a compound in Pakistan, the president said in a dramatic late-night statement at the White House, the Associated Press reported following Obama’s address.Obama said the military took custody of his remains. It remains to be seen if the government will attempt to provide evidence that the remains are indeed those of Osama bin Laden.“The fight against terror goes on, but tonight America has sent an unmistakable message: No matter how long it takes, justice will be done,” said former president Bush. In 2006, Bush admitted that capturing Osama was not a top priority. In February, 2004, Iranian state radio claimed Osama bin Laden had been captured in Pakistan’s border region with Afghanistan “a long time ago.” Pentagon and Pakistani officials denied the report. “Osama bin Laden has been arrested a long time ago, but Bush is intending to use it for propaganda maneuvering in the presidential election,” the radio report said.
Osama bin Laden died of kidney failure soon after the September 11, 2001, attacks. In 2002, Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf said bin Laden had kidney disease, and that he had required a dialysis machine when he lived in Afghanistan. That same year, the FBI’s top counterterrorism official, Dale Watson, said, “I personally think he is probably not with us anymore.”A Taliban leader told the Pakistan Observer on December 21, 2002, that Bin Laden was suffering from a serious lung complication and died in mid-December, in the vicinity of the Tora Bora mountains. The source claimed that bin Laden was laid to rest honorably in his last abode and his grave was made as per his Wahabi belief, according to Fox News.
Alex Jones was told live on the radio in 2002 by high-level Council on Foreign Relations members that Osama Bin Laden had died of kidney failure in early 2002.“I have it from high level [sources] from inside the Bush administration…that bin Laden died of natural causes and that his family has given the body to the CIA, that they’re gonna roll him out right before the election, that he’s on ice right now. They will claim they killed him right before the election,” Alex said at the time.“Jones gave a caution that the intelligence could be disinformation but claimed that his base in Austin was extremely close to the Bush administration and similar information received in the past had been credible,” Paul Joseph Watson wrote in August of 2002.
During the 2004 election, CNN reported that Democratic insiders had been told that George W. Bush was going to use the Bin Laden body as an ace-in-the-hole if he thought he was in danger of losing the 2004 election. This confirmed the evidence that Jones had been given by the CFR and others. In 2003, former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright told Fox News Channel analyst Morton Kondracke she suspected Bush knew the whereabouts of Osama bin Laden and was waiting for the most politically expedient moment to announce his capture.Benazir Bhutto, who was killed in a suicide attack at the end of 2007, stated that Osama bin Laden had been killed by Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, a man convicted of kidnapping and killing journalist Daniel Pearl.Obama’s announcement follows the release of a highly suspicious birth certificate last week. Both events represent psychological operations that possibly portend more significant events in the days ahead as the U.S. dollar continues to lose its reserve status, the economy fails to recover as promised, and wars expand in Libya, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.Obama’s propaganda stunt arrives as the Democrats kick off their leader’s presidential reelection bid against a number of Republicans contenders who have been highly critical of not only his perceived handling of the economy, but also his management of the manufactured war on terror.

DOCTOR DOCTORIAN FROM ANGEL OF GOD

JAMES 5:1-3
1 Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you.
2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten.
3 Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.

REVELATION 18:10,17,19
10 Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.
17 For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off,
19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate.

EZEKIEL 7:19
19 They shall cast their silver in the streets, and their gold shall be removed: their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD: they shall not satisfy their souls, neither fill their bowels: because it is the stumblingblock of their iniquity.

REVELATION 13:16-18
16 And he(THE FALSE POPE WHO DEFECTED FROM THE CHRISTIAN FAITH) causeth all,(IN THE WORLD ) both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:(MICROCHIP IMPLANT)
17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark,(MICROCHIP IMPLANT) or the name of the beast,(WORLD DICTATORS NAME INGRAVED ON YOUR SKIN OR TATTOOED ON YOU OR IN THE MICROCHIP IMPLANT) or the number of his name.(THE NUMBERS OF HIS NAME INGRAVED IN THE MICROCHIP IMLPLANT)-(ALL THESE WILL TELL THE WORLD DICTATOR THAT YOUR WITH HIM AND AGAINST KING JESUS-GOD)
18 Here is wisdom. Greek plea for 'breathing space' falls on deaf ears for now

22.08.12 @ 21:25 By Honor Mahony
BRUSSELS - Greece's request for 'breathing space' will go unanswered for at least another month as its lenders say they are determined to wait for a formal assessment of its reform progress before granting Athens any leeway on its bailout programme. The blunt message was delivered in person by eurogroup Jean-Claude Juncker on Wednesday (22 August) in Athens."I have to underline this will depend on the findings of the troika mission and we have to discuss the length of the period and other dimensions," Juncker said in reference to Greek hopes to be allowed a further two years to reach budget targets. While noting that he was on Greece's side and condemning EU politicians who continue to speculate about Greece's exit from the eurozone, Juncker said it was the country's "last chance" to avoid bankruptcy. The troika report - put together by experts from EU commission, the ECB and the IMF and due out late September - will also influence the more immediate decision of whether Athens gets paid the next tranche of its €130bn bailout.
For his part, Prime Minister Antonis Samaras said that Greeks – who are witnessing their country’s fifth year of recession – “want light at the end of the tunnel.”Promising that "credibility" will soon be restored, he said that the privatization programme – long a point of criticism for lenders – will be widened and that an €11.7bn austerity package is near to being finalized.Samaras has also being putting in some very public diplomatic spadework for his beleaguered country. He told Bild - Germany’s most widely-read newspaper and fervent guardian of the public purse – that a deadline extension would not mean more German taxpayers’ money.
“We require no additional money. All we want is a little room to breathe, to get the economy going and to increase government revenues. More time does not automatically mean more money.”He left a similar message in Thursday’s edition of the left-leaning Sueddeutsche Zeitung“The Germans will get their money back. I am guaranteeing that personally. And all the others will also get their money back. We will fulfill our obligations fully.”He also noted that his country will be “broke” if it does not receive the next slice of the bailout. The Greek leader has two more important meetings this week, with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Friday and France’s Francois Hollande on Saturday.Merkel herself is facing a political tightrope as she tries to keep Greece in the eurozone while facing down political allies increasingly unhappy at sending money to Athens.

Defying Israel and US, UN's Ban Ki-Moon Confirms Trip to Tehran

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will attend Iran for the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit next week, defying objections from Israel, the United States and Jewish groups worldwide to boycott the event.A statement issued by his office said Ban “looks forward” to the summit and working with the visiting leaders, “including the host country,” in an effort to reach “solutions on issues that are central to the global agenda.”Taking place in the capital, Tehran, and under the chairmanship of Iran, the NAM Summit will be held on 26-31 August, and is expected to draw representatives from its 120 members, as well as from various associated observer countries.Ban’s spokesperson said that the UN chief takes “seriously” his responsibility and that of the United Nations to pursue diplomatic engagement with all member states, “in the interest of peacefully addressing vital matters of peace and security.”“With respect to the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Secretary-General will use the opportunity to convey the clear concerns and expectations of the international community on the issues for which cooperation and progress are urgent for both regional stability and the welfare of the Iranian people,” the spokesperson said. “These include Iran’s nuclear programme, terrorism, human rights and the crisis in Syria.”His decision to attend the conference comes just days after he condemned the regime’s “offensive and inflammatory” remarks about Israel.“The secretary-general is dismayed by the remarks threatening Israel’s existence attributed over the last two days to the supreme leader and the president of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” the UN press office said over the weekend.Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu urged Ban to refrain from attending the summit saying it would be a “horrible mistake.”“Mr. Secretary-General, your place is not in Tehran,” Netanyahu told Ban.On Monday US State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland also called on Ban to boycott the conference saying, “Iran is going to try to manipulate this NAM summit and the attendees to advance its own agenda, and to obscure the fact that it is failing to live up to multiple obligations that it has to the UN Security Council, the International Atomic Energy Agency and other international bodies.”David Harris, executive director of the American Jewish Committee, issued a statement saying “we are stunned” that Ban “would honor a regime that consistently ignores both him and the world body he heads in ways that threaten regional and global security.”The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) called the secretary-general’s decision an "undeserved gift" to Iran that could be seen as rewarding the regime's belligerence on the nuclear issue and escalating anti-Israel, anti-American, and anti-Semitic rhetoric and incitement. In a letter dated August 8, the ADL urged Ban Ki-moon to decline  the invitation, saying, "Your presence in the Iranian capital at this time will be counterproductive to the efforts of the international community to bring Iran into compliance with its obligations under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and abandon its nuclear weapons ambitions."

LUKE 21:25-26
25 And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity;(MASS CONFUSION) the sea and the waves roaring;(FIERCE WINDS)
26 Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.

THE FIRST JUDGEMENT OF THE EARTH STARTED WITH WATER-IT ONLY MAKES SENSE THE LAST GENERATION WILL BE HAVING FLOODING
GENESIS 7:6-12
6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.
8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,
9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.
10 And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.
GOD PROMISED BY A RAINBOW-THE EARTH WOULD NEVER BE DESTROYED TOTALLY WITH A FLOOD AGAIN.BUT FLOODIING IS A SIGN OF JUDGEMENT.

Tropical Storm Isaac getting better organized

ROSEAU, Dominica (AP) — Leaders across much of the Caribbean closed schools and government offices on Wednesday as Tropical Storm Isaac swept toward the region, and the U.S. military postponed hearings for Sept. 11 prisoners ahead of a storm that could sweep across Cuba and perhaps eventually menace Florida as a hurricane. The storm was 75 miles (120 kilometers) east-northeast of Dominica early Wednesday afternoon, with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph (75 kph). Isaac was moving west at 21 mph (33 kph) and is expected to become a hurricane by Thursday, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center.Dominica Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit urged people to stay home from work on Wednesday.
"I want us all to be safe," he said. "I don't want lives to be lost."Military authorities in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, canceled several days of pretrial hearings in the case of five prisoners charged in the Sept. 11 attacks. They also planned to evacuate about 200 people, including legal teams and relatives of Sept. 11 victims.
Isaac also posed a possible threat to Florida during next week's Republican National Convention in Tampa, according to forecasters, though the hurricane's track was uncertain.Tess Hunneybell, owner of Manico River Eco Resort, which features luxury treehouses perched in the foothills of Dominica's Morne Aux Diables volcano, said there was still barely a breeze Wednesday afternoon as dark clouds gathered over the sea."Right now, it's definitely the calm before the storm. But we can see the clouds coming this way," Hunneybell said. She and others wrapped the treehouses in tarpaulin and nailed shut louvre doors in anticipation of Isaac. There were no guests as flights to the jagged, densely forested island had been suspended. In Puerto Rico, Gov. Luis Fortuno declared a state of emergency and activated the National Guard. He also canceled classes and closed government agencies on Wednesday. Federal officials also closed the popular San Felipe del Morro castle in Old San Juan. The storm was expected to pass just south of Puerto Rico on Thursday. The U.S. Coast Guard closed all ports in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands to incoming commercial ships and warned that all commercial vessels bigger than 200 gross tons must leave or obtain permission to remain in port. The U.S. Virgin Islands commissioner of public works, Darryl Smalls, said crews distributed sandbags to residents in St. Croix, where schools and government offices will close on Thursday. St. Kitts also announced similar closures for Wednesday.Liat airline and American Eagle canceled flights to islands including Dominica, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guadeloupe and Martinique. The storm's center was expected to move over the Leeward Islands on Wednesday evening, and forecasters said it is expected to hit the Dominican Republic as a hurricane early Friday. It is then expected to hit Cuba as a tropical storm. In the island of Vieques, which lies just east of Puerto Rico, people prepared for the government to temporarily shut off the power.Glenn Curry, an owner of Bananas Guesthouse, said he closed the restaurant and will move guests to a higher floor."I don't think this is going to be a major storm, but it's going to be noisy and unpleasant for a few hours," he said.Meanwhile, the general manager of the Hilton Golf & Casino Resort in the southern city of Ponce, Puerto Rico's second largest city, said he has warned guests about the impending storm."We expect bad weather, rain, wind, but nothing to the extent of danger," said Gunther Mainka. He said the hotel prepares for storms in July, including trimming the numerous palm trees that surround the resort."They get a big haircut," he said. "All the loose branches go down, all the coconuts go down."____Associated Press reporters Danica Coto in San Juan, Puerto Rico, David McFadden in Kingston, Jamaica, contributed to this report.

Tropical Storm Isaac takes aim at Hispaniola

ROSEAU, Dominica (AP) — Tropical Storm Isaac took aim at the Dominican Republic and Haiti early Thursday, expected to gain strength after drenching tiny islands in its whirl over the eastern entrance to the Caribbean. No major damage was reported, but authorities in Puerto Rico said an elderly woman died in an accident while preparing for the storm.U.S. forecasters said Isaac was likely to approach Hispaniola, the island shared by the Dominican Republic and Haiti, as a hurricane late Thursday or early Friday after intensifying over the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea. It was predicted to move on to Cuba as a tropical storm and perhaps eventually menace Florida as a hurricane later in the week.In the eastern Caribbean, many seafront bars and restaurants remained open Wednesday night as lightning and thunder crackled and choppy surf slapped against piers and seawalls. The storm was 255 miles (410 kilometers) south-southeast of San Juan, Puerto Rico, early Thursday, with maximum sustained winds near 40 mph (65 kph). Isaac was moving west near 12 mph (19 kph), the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.At the bar of the Fort Young Hotel in Dominica's coastal capital of Roseau, a few tourists and locals drank cold beer and chatted over the sound of white-crested waves outside."The skies were very black and cloudy most of the day, but it's been pretty quiet so far. Some rain, very little wind," bartender Raymond Reynolds said Wednesday at the 71-room hotel on the jagged, densely forested island. "We've been through this before."In the foothills of Dominica's Morne Aux Diables volcano, Tess Hunneybell, owner of Manico River Eco Resort, said most of Wednesday was "weirdly quiet" after she and others wrapped the resort's signature treehouses in tarpaulin and nailed shut louvre doors. As a precaution, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit urged people to stay home from work. "I don't want lives to lost," he said.As the storm approached, military authorities at the U.S. base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, canceled several days of pretrial hearings in the case of five prisoners charged in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. They also planned to evacuate about 200 people, including legal teams and relatives of Sept. 11 victims.Isaac posed a potential threat to Florida during next week's Republican National Convention in Tampa, according to forecasters, though the storm's track was uncertain. In the U.S. Virgin Islands, along the harbor in St. Croix's historic town of Christiansted, piers normally lined with pleasure boats were empty Wednesday. Business owners stacked sandbags around the doorways of pastel-colored buildings.Schools and government offices in St. Croix were ordered to remain closed Thursday. St. Kitts had announced similar closures Wednesday. With the storm expected to pass just south of Puerto Rico on Thursday, Gov. Luis Fortuno declared a state of emergency for the U.S. territory and activated the National Guard. He also canceled classes and closed government agencies. Federal officials closed the popular San Felipe del Morro castle in Old San Juan.Authorities in Puerto Rico reported that a 75-year-old woman died Wednesday in the northern city of Bayamon when she fell from a second-floor balcony while filling a barrel with water in preparation for the storm. The U.S. Coast Guard closed all ports in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands to incoming commercial ships and warned that all commercial vessels bigger than 200 gross tons must leave or obtain permission to remain in port.Downpours drenched the French island of Guadeloupe on Wednesday, said local chief meteorologist Norbert Aouizerats. Officials warned of swollen rivers and flooding in Martinique, where authorities urged people in low-lying areas to evacuate. In the Dominican Republic, authorities banned boats from entering its waters and warned of heavy rains from Thursday through Saturday.Liat airline and American Eagle canceled flights to islands including Dominica, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guadeloupe and Martinique. On the island of Vieques, just east of Puerto Rico, people prepared for the government to temporarily shut off power.Glenn Curry, an owner of Bananas Guesthouse, said he closed the restaurant and would move guests to a higher floor."I don't think this is going to be a major storm, but it's going to be noisy and unpleasant for a few hours," he said.In the meantime, another tropical depression was moving across the Atlantic. The depression had maximum sustained winds near 35 mph (55 kph) early Thursday and was expected to become a tropical storm later Thursday or on Friday. The depression was centered about 1,110 miles (1,790 kilometers) west of the Cape Verde Islands and moving west-northwest near 16 mph (26 kph).___Associated Press writers Jason Bronis in Christiansted, St. Croix; Danica Coto in San Juan, Puerto Rico; David McFadden in Kingston, Jamaica; Rodolphe Lamy in Fort-de-France, Martinique, contributed to this report.

Military hits town near Damascus, 60 killed in Syria

AMMAN (Reuters) - Troops and tanks swept into a restive town near Damascus on Thursday in an assault aimed at crushing opposition to President Bashar al-Assad, whose struggle for survival has dragged Syria into an increasingly bloody war.Artillery and helicopters attacked the Sunni Muslim town of Daraya for 24 hours, killing 15 people and wounding 150, before soldiers moved in and raided houses, opposition sources said. There was little resistance as Assad's forces pushed toward the center of Daraya, on the southwest edge of Damascus. Armed rebels had apparently already left, activists in Damascus said."They are using mortar bombs to clear each sector. Then they enter it, while moving towards the center," said Abu Zeid, an activist speaking by phone from an area near Daraya.Other activists said the army was also bombarding parts of the town from Qasioun, a mountain overlooking Damascus, and from a Republican Guard barracks near a hilltop presidential palace."For about an hour we heard explosions and gunfire. It is not as bad as yesterday yet but tensions are really high," opposition activist Samir al-Shami told Reuters from Damascus.
Assad's forces also raided the southeastern Kafr Souseh area early on Thursday and detained people, another activist said. The military had driven insurgents from most of the areas they seized in the capital after a bomb killed four top security officials on July 18, but rebels have crept back, regrouping without taking on the army in pitched battles.
CHILDREN BURIED
Punitive military raids and summary killings appear to be one response as Assad strives to keep control of Damascus and the northern commercial hub of Aleppo, opposition sources say.YouTube footage showed a funeral in Daraya of a mother and five children from the al-Sheikh family. Activists said the victims were killed by shellfire in the town after fleeing this week's military offensive on the Damascus suburb of Mouadamiya. The bodies were wrapped in white shrouds, the children's faces exposed. Mourners laid green branches on the corpses and cried: "There is no god but Allah, Assad is the enemy of Allah."
Tanks and troops attacked the southwestern Damascus suburb of Mouadamiya on Monday and Tuesday, killing 86 people, half of them in cold blood, according to Assad's opponents. It was hard to verify the assertion due to state curbs on independent media. Syrian leaders say they are fighting "armed terrorists" backed by Western and Gulf Arab nations out to topple Assad for his resistance to Israel and the United States.International diplomacy has failed to brake the conflict in Syria, which the United Nations says has cost more than 18,000 lives since a popular uprising erupted in March 2011.More than 60 were killed across Syria on Thursday, according to the opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The toll included 48 civilians. The British-based group said 129 civilians were among 200 people killed in Syria on Wednesday.Outgoing U.N.-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan has blamed splits in the U.N. Security Council, where Russia and China have repeatedly blocked Western efforts to ramp up pressure on Assad, for the failure of his peace mission.Babacar Gaye, the head of U.N. monitors sent to observe an abortive ceasefire declared by Annan on April 12, was expected to leave Damascus on Thursday. The mission's mandate has expired and was not renewed due to spiraling violence.Annan's successor, veteran Algerian diplomat Lakhdar Brahimi, was flying to New York for a week of consultations at the United Nations, his spokesman Ahmad Fawzi said. For all Brahimi's skills, it is not clear how he can succeed where Annan failed, given the deadlock among big powers and the intractable conflict in Syria, where Assad's minority Alawite-based ruling system is pitted against mostly Sunni opponents. The conflict in Syria, at the heart of a volatile Middle East, is already spilling over into its neighbors.Sporadic clashes between Sunnis and Alawites erupted for a fourth day in Lebanon's northern city of Tripoli, breaching a truce agreed less than 24 hours earlier, after Sunni gunmen shot dead an Alawite man. Nine people were wounded in the fighting. At least 13 people have been killed and more than 100 wounded in Sunni-Alawite fighting in Lebanon this week that has been fuelled by sectarian tensions in Syria.Ankara has grown alarmed at apparent links between Kurdish militants fighting in southeastern Turkey and the conflict in Syria. Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has accused Assad of backing Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) fighters and says Turkey's military might act to counter any threat from the PKK in Syria.Turkish and U.S. diplomats, intelligence and military officials held talks in Ankara on Thursday expected to include a possible buffer zone in Syria and steps to stop PKK militants in the border region from exploiting the chaos.(Additional reporting by Erika Solomon and Mariam Karouny in Beirut, Oliver Holmes in Aleppo, Nicholas Tattersall in Istanbul and Stephanie Nebehay in Geneva; Writing by Alistair Lyon; Editing by Jon Boyle)

Is Israel planning EMP attack on Iran?

Tehran nearing 'zone of immunity' against conventional assault on nuclear sites

The assessment is underscored by recent comments from Israeli officials that the Islamic republic is reaching its “zone of immunity” from conventional military attack on its nuclear sites. In addition, analysts point out the use of long-range aircraft with refueling capability would be highly complex and pose many logistical problems. Israel also probably would not be allowed overflight permission from Turkey, Iraq or Saudi Arabia to reach its Iranian targets. Further, such an approach would minimize any element of surprise.
Meanwhile, top religious and political officials in Iran have issued repeated warnings they plan to obliterate the Jewish state.Israel has made an assessment that Iran is on the threshold of a breakthrough to make a nuclear weapon. However,  some national security experts, including some in the United States, believe Iran is several years away from making such a device. And they say actual weaponization – the ability to miniaturize a nuclear bomb to fit on its nuclear-capable missiles – still is further off.Debate over just how close Iran may be to making a nuclear weapon has raised the issue of the quality of the intelligence to back Israeli claims. Sources point to the example of the intelligence used to assess Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction that prompted the U.S. to attack Iraq in March 2003.With Iran continuing its enrichment program, however, Israel and some Western countries are concerned that the amount of low-level uranium it has enriched could be enriched further to some 90 percent purity – which is what is required to make nuclear weapons.U.S. officials don’t assess that Iran has reached that point.Given that Iranian sites may be hardened against a conventional military attack, several Israeli and foreign sources believe that Israel has a nuclear device to create an electromagnetic pulse, or EMP, that would produce little radiation on the ground but could knock out all of Iran’s electronics.Israel also is assessed to be able to launch nuclear-tipped ballistic missiles from its German-supplied Dolphin electric submarines that could carry a one-kiloton or more device and explode over Iran, effectively neutralizing all of Iran’s electronics. This would include Iran’s command and control capabilities and its ability to launch ballistic missiles in retaliation to a pre-emptive Israeli attack on Iran’s nuclear sites, which Western intelligence has assessed is a cover to make nuclear weapons.Sources say that an Israeli EMP attack also would effectively halt Iran’s ability to launch its forces to block the Strait of Hormuz, which the Islamic republic has threatened to do if it is attacked, along with targeting a number of U.S. military facilities in the region, as well as Israel. An electromagnetic pulse occurs following a nuclear weapon exploded at a high altitude, creating a very strong electrical field that can overwhelm all electronics, knocking out or seriously damaging any electronic devices connected to power sources or antennas, including communications equipment, computers, electrical appliances, automobile and aircraft ignitions systems. Experts say it also can adversely affect a person’s implanted heart pacemaker device. The effect from an EMP would be very similar to electronics in a near lightning strike or a solar storm which also can affect electronics but on a lesser scale than a pulse from a high-altitude nuclear explosion.Another scenario discussed among some Israeli leaders is the detonation of an EMP over the entire Middle East, including Israel, whose military infrastructure has been hardened against such attacks. This would allow Israel to fly its jets directly to Iran without concerns about detection. Though it would also turn out the lights in Israel, sources there say the Jewish state could bring power back for civilians in a matter of days. A detonation at an altitude of up to 250 miles not only would affect all electronics in Iran but could damage electrical systems from the Middle East and much of Europe, these experts add. Such an EMP event also would dramatically affect all U.S. military facilities in the region. An EMP attack on the United States, for example, from a 30-kiloton nuclear weapon exploded at an altitude of 62 miles, or 100 kilometers, effectively would knock out 70 percent of electrical systems up to a thousand miles in every direction. A similar explosion at a higher altitude of some 250 miles would virtually affect all electronics from Boston to Los Angeles and from Chicago to New Orleans, according to experts.Consequently, a detonation limited to Iran would have to be at a much lower altitude to avoid such far-ranging effects on the electronics in the region and beyond.
According to U.S. intelligence sources, Israel not only possesses nuclear devices of one kiloton or more which would be sufficient to create an effective result from an electromagnetic pulse but has Jericho III missiles which it tested in 2009 capable of carrying nuclear payloads some 2,500 miles. The distance between Israel and Iran is approximately 1,000 miles.U.S. sources knowledgeable about ways to “harden” buildings and other facilities against an EMP attack say business in this area has been booming throughout the Middle East for months. In recent weeks, U.S. intelligence officials have told WND/G2Bulletin that they have detected Israel handling propellants for its Jericho missiles. The prospect that Israel has this capability was first made known by an ex-CIA case officer, Chet Nagle, at a Capitol Hill EMPact America press conference held in Washington, D.C., in November 2011.
A similar prospect was outlined in a Nov. 10, 2011, Front Page Magazine article, “Connecting the Nuclear Dots on Iran,” written by Kenneth Timmerman who is the president of the Foundation for Democracy in Iran and maintains close ties with the Iranian opposition.“Any Israeli attack on Iran is sure to make of Israel an international pariah, Nagle argues,” Timmerman said in quoting Nagle in a conversation. “Plus, the likelihood of success – that is, in destroying or disabling all of Iran’s nuclear weapons capabilities (by conventional means) so they have nothing to launch on the morning after the attack – is low.“If you’re going to go to all that trouble and be a pariah,” Timmerman quoted Nagel as saying in their conversation, “why not take one of those Jericho missiles, and detonate it 300 miles above the surface and deliver an EMP strike on Iran? That would stop their clock – if it’s electric – as well as all those centrifuges and everything else. Then the Greens can take over the country and we can go back in and rebuild the grid.”The prospect for this doomsday approach has arisen due to a comment made by Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak last February that Iran was entering a “zone of immunity” from military attack. Other officials in recent days have suggested that such a “zone of immunity” will be reached before the end of the year.“The world, including the current U.S. administration, understands and accepts that Israel necessarily views the threat differently than they do, and that ultimately, Israel is responsible for taking the decisions related to its future, its security and its destiny,” Barak said.Given that this “zone of immunity” could be reached before the end of the year, there has been increasing speculation in recent days that Israel may launch an attack prior to the U.S. presidential elections in an effort to force the U.S. to act. Sources say that the Israelis have assessed that if President Obama is re-elected, he may want to continue down the path of negotiating with the Iranians. The sources add that by attacking prior to the U.S. elections in November, the U.S. then will have no choice but to back Israel due to the U.S. commitment to ensure Israel’s security. They add that it also will help Obama’s re-election efforts.
Iran, however, insists that its nuclear development program is for peaceful purposes as a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and as a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency. Under the terms of the NPT, Iran has the “right” to enrich uranium as it is doing. Iran has enriched up to 20 percent, which is more than enough for refueling its nuclear reactors but is considered an acceptable level for medical research. As early as 2005, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei issued a fatwa, or religious decree, that is a legal pronouncement in Islam, that the production, stockpiling and use of nuclear weapons are forbidden under Islam and that the Islamic republic “shall never acquire these weapons.” Last February, Khamenei reiterated his 2005 fatwa.“The Iranian nation has never pursued and will never pursue nuclear weapons,” he said. “There is no doubt that the decision makers in the countries opposing us know well that Iran is not after nuclear weapons because the Islamic republic, logically, religiously and theoretically, considers the possession of nuclear weapons a grave sin and believes the proliferation of such weapons is senseless, destructive and dangerous.”Sources say that the edict from Khamenei is considered more than a fatwa, given that he not only is an ayatollah but also the supreme leader of Iran. For that reason, what he said is considered a hukm, or decree of the Supreme Jurisprudent, or Vali-yi Faqih, that determines the legal framework of the Islamic republic in accordance with Islamic law.Joseph Farah contributed to this story.

Iranian leaders in Israel’s sights after calling for its destruction

DEBKAfile DEBKA Video August 21, 2012, 5:57 PM (GMT+02:00)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ujdgmbSLwM&feature=player_embedded

President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu have bandied thousands of words in their dispute over an Israeli strike on Iran’s nuclear sites. For a time, their argument muffled the abiding ambition of the Islamic Republic to destroy Israel - come what may. However, the message roared by Iranian leaders over last weekend - before and after Al Quds Day - was quite simply this: Israel must be destroyed, irrespective of whether or not it attacks the Islamic RepublicPresident Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was cheered by half a million demonstrators in Tehran shouting: Death to Israel! Death to America! when he declared Israel is a "cancerous tumor" that will soon be finished off in the new Middle East. He called “the Zionist regime’s existence an insult to all humanity.”Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said:  “The fake Zionist (regime) will disappear from the landscape of geography,”And although both were severely rebuked by world leaders for their violent invective, it continued to pour out of Tehran in a comment by Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Aerospace Force Chief, Brig. Gen. Amir Hajizadeh who said an Israeli attack would be welcome “as a pretext to get rid of Israel for good."Israel’s new Home Defense Minister Avi Dichter laid it out in plain language: While Syria, Lebanon and Gaza confront Israel with a strategic threat, Iran imperils our very existence.”Certain Western intelligence sources were reminded of a speech by Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu in 2006 when he quoted a Holocaust survivor as saying:  “My main lesson from the Holocaust is that if someone tells you he is going to exterminate you, believe him. And I add to that. Believe him and stop him!”Six years later, those sources now suggest, after America’s top soldier Gen. Martin Dempsey offered the opinion that Israel can no longer destroy Iran’s nuclear weapon capacity – only delay it , that Netanyahu may be willing to go further: Not only to stop them, but kill them. They are quietly using the term “decapitation.”They point to the Israeli Mossad’s long record of targeted covert operations for dealing with past and would-be annihilators: In the fifties, the Mossad captured the Nazi criminal Adolf Eichmann in Operational Finale. In the seventies, Golda Meir ordered Operation Wrath of God to hunt down and pick off one by one the Palestinian Black September murderers of 11 Israeli sportsmen at the 1972 Munich Olympics. In February 2008, Iran’s senior terrorist operations commander, Hizballah’s Imad Mughniyeh, was liquidated in Damascus, so ending a bloody career of assassinations, terrorism and abductions against US and other Western targets as well as Israel.Hizballah’s chief Hassan Nasrallah knows the score: He has spent six years hunkered down in a fortified bunker, taking care never to  broadcast his inflammatory speeches calling for Israel’s destruction live, only by video. It cannot be ruled out that this point, Israel may decide to disable Iran’s nuclear program by going for its leaders.

Iran unveils new missile, other weapons

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran unveiled upgrades to six weapons on Tuesday, including a more accurate short-range missile and a more powerful naval engine, Iranian media reported, in what seemed to be its latest response to international pressure over its nuclear program. The hardware was presented at a ceremony marking Defence Industry Day and attended by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Defence Minister Ahmad Vahidi.Israel has said it is considering air strikes on Iran's nuclear sites if the Islamic Republic does not resolve Western fears it is developing the means to produce atomic weapons, something the Islamic Republic denies.Iran says it could hit Israel and U.S. bases in the region if it comes under attack. It has also threatened to block the Strait of Hormuz, the neck of the Gulf through which 40 percent of the world's sea-borne oil exports pass. Such a move would probably invite a military response from the United States.
Ahmadinejad said on Tuesday that Iran's military advances are purely for defensive purposes and should not be taken as a threat, but said they would dissuade world powers from imposing their will on Iran.
"Defensive advances are meant to defend human integrity, and are not meant to be offensive moves toward others," Ahmadinejad said, according to Mehr news agency."I have no doubt that our defensive capabilities can stand up to bullying and put a halt to their plans."The United States has also not ruled out military action against Iran but says the priority of world powers remains the use of diplomacy and sanctions to rein in its nuclear activity.Among the upgrades was a fourth generation of the Fateh-110 missile, which boasts a range of about 300 km (180 miles).Iran said earlier this month that it had successfully test-fired the new model and that it was equipped with a more accurate guidance system."This missile is one of the most precise and advanced land-to-land ballistic missiles using solid fuel," Vahidi was quoted as saying by Fars news agency. "In the last decade it has had a significant role in promoting the Islamic Republic of Iran's defence capabilities."In July, Iran said it had successfully test-fired medium-range missiles capable of hitting Israel, and tested dozens of missiles aimed at simulated air bases. It also presented a more powerful, 5,000-horsepower sea-borne engine, the Bonyan-4, Fars quoted Vahidi as saying. A previous version had 1,000 horsepower, the Iranian Students' News Agency (ISNA) said.
SCEPTICISM
Military experts have cast doubt on Iran's claims of weapons advances, especially its assertions about its missile program, saying Tehran often exaggerates its capabilities."The Fateh-110 has a crude guidance and control system that operates during the missile's ascent" rather than during final descent, said Michael Elleman, senior fellow for missile defence at the International Institute for Strategic Studies."The Fateh-110 appears to lack the subsystems needed to effect terminal steering," he said in an email.Iran also presented Armita, an "airborne laboratory" to help test aircraft launch systems and oxygen generation and train fighter pilots, Fars reported.Vahidi said it was named after the daughter of Dariush Rezaeinejad, an Iranian scientist who was shot dead last year.Iran believes agents working with foreign intelligence services including the American CIA and Israel'sMossad are behind the assassinations of several of its nuclear scientists.

A Palestinian Flag on the Temple Mount

August 7, 2012, 2:12 pm 28

Rabbi Chaim Richman is the director of the international department of the Temple Institute in Jerusalem…

An ancient Islamic tradition foretells the rebuilding of the Holy Temple on Mount Moriah. More about that later: But this past Friday, Aug. 3rd – it happened to be Tu B’Av, a significant holiday in the time of the Holy Temple – a large Palestinian flag was flown over the Temple Mount, in a deliberate and flagrant violation of Israeli sovereignty. You couldn’t have heard about this outrageous public display of a foreign flag flying over Israel’s holiest site in her capital city, or read about it in any mainstream media, because it was not reported. The incident elicited no response whatsoever, neither from the Israel police, nor from any governmental agency or spokesman. Two months ago it was reported that an Israeli policeman who displayed a small Israeli flag on the Temple Mount during a routine patrol was relieved of his duties, and would face additional disciplinary measures. The Islamic clerics were enraged and the police response was swift and severe. The Wakf officials viewed the incident with the utmost severity and spoke of it in their sermons, emphasizing that “Al Aksa is Muslim only.” Sheikh Ikrimah Sabri was outraged and noted that of late, more security personnel and ‘settlers’ have been present on the Temple Mount, but he found this action to be particularly infuriating: “The display of an Israeli flag is an act of aggression, with the intention of applying Israeli sovereignty on the Al Aksa mosque, to pull the carpet out from under the administration of the Islamic Wakf.” The police responded, “the officer displayed a tiny Israeli flag in the Temple Mount area. The commanders immediately removed him from the site. The officer was relieved of his duties and severe disciplinary measures will be enacted against him.”The popular, much-repeated Israeli zeitgeist regarding the Temple Mount is that the holy site is unquestionably under Israeli sovereignty, and that the immortal words broadcast by Motta Gur on June 7th, 1967, “Cease fire, the Temple Mount is in our hands,” are absolute truth. However, the thought goes, herein – in our ability to withdraw and minimize ourselves – lies our greatness. For in a magnanimous gesture of respect for Islamic sensitivity, the government of Israel agreed that administration over the Mount would remain in the hands of the Wakf. The latter exercise almost all authority over the daily affairs at the site.
In 1924, an official guide booklet for tourists was published by the Supreme Muslim Council entitled ‘A Brief Guide to Al-Haram Al-Sharif.’ In this booklet, printed in Jerusalem in 1924 by the Wakf itself, the following statements can be found on page 4: “The site is one of the oldest in the world. Its sanctity dates from the earliest (perhaps from pre-historic) times. Its identity with the site of Solomon’s Temple is beyond dispute. This, too, is the spot, according to the universal belief, on which ‘David built there an altar unto the Lord, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings (II Sam. 24:25)’.”The author of this blog holds an original copy of this 1924 publication, as well as subsequent editions that were re-published periodically in the years following the establishment of the State of Israel: I have editions dated 1954, 1962 and 1965. In every edition of this booklet published after the establishment of the State of Israel, the material – or rather, the history – has been completely revised. The earlier statements testifying to Israel’s ancient connection are purged, and the entire historical review of the site has been distilled to this: “Haram es-Sharif – Noble Sanctuary – is the religious center of the Muslims of the Middle East and second only to Mecca in the Muslim World. The Prophet himself spoke of Al-Aqsa, the original name for the place and, according to tradition, made a miraculous journey to it. Thus it has been identified with Islam from its beginning.”
Rabbi Yisrael Ariel, founder of the Temple Institute and one of the paratroopers who liberated the Old City of Jerusalem in the 1967 Six Day War, tells this story about the heady day, 45 years ago, when Jewish soldiers once again found themselves on the Temple Mount after 1900 years:The IDF paratroopers on the Temple Mount were approached by a Jordanian in civilian clothes who identified himself as the official guide, appointed by the Jordanian government, to guide dignitaries at the site. He asked the soldiers, Yisrael Ariel among them, if they would like a tour of the Temple Mount and began to walk with them, offering his explanation as they went.“Here is where the Sanctuary stood.”“Here is where the altar stood.”“Here is where the Holy of Holies stood.”A far cry from the official position of the Islamic Wakf today, that denies a Temple ever existed here.Rabbi Ariel, the young paratrooper, was astonished as to why this man should be telling the Israeli soldiers all these details – preserved by Islamic tradition – regarding the Holy Temple.
The man answered: “We have a tradition from our fathers that one day the Jews will wage a war, and conquer this mountain, and rebuild the Holy Temple. I assume that you will be starting tomorrow, and I want this to be my contribution.”Apparently, this is what they were expecting. Perhaps if we would have built the Holy Temple back then, we would have had 45 years of peace and security.Wouldn’t that be ironic.

UNDER GROUND NUCLEAR WASTE SITES IN ONTARIO CANADA

KING JESUS IS COMING FOR US ANY TIME NOW. THE RAPTURE. BE PREPARED TO GO.

I WAS IN ELMWOOD ONTARIO A WEEK AGO AND JUST STUMBLED ON THIS NUCLEAR WASTE SITE IMFORMATION FOR AREAS IN ONTARIO TO BURY THE NUCLEAR FUEL RODS.I WAS AMAZED-SO YESTERDAY I PHONED THE NUCLEAR WASTE MANAGEMENT ORGANIZATION IN TORONTO.JAMIE THE MAIN GUY WAS OUT OF THE OFFICE TILL AUG 27,12 BUT I TALKED WITH A LADY ABOUT THE SITUATION.

THE LADY TOLD ME THAT 20 SITES WERE BEING CONSIDERED WERE THESE NUCLEAR RODS WILL BE STORED FOREVER.I WAS AMAZED THAT WALKERTON WERE I LIVE WAS ONE OF THE TOWNS WANTING TO STORE THIS NUCLEAR WASTE.OTHER PLACES AS POSSIBLE SITES WERE IN SOUTH BRUCE,ERIN ELDERSLIE,SAUGEEN SHORES, KINLOSS. SHE TOLD ME.I NEVER GOT THE FULL LIST.I WISH I DID.

SHE TOLD ME THERE JUST IN THE INTIAL STAGE WERE THE SITE HAS NOT BEEN SET YET AND WILL NOT BE FOR A WHILE.AS TESTS MUST BE CONDUCTED AND PEOPLES INPUT MUST BE DONE BEFORE THE FINAL PLACE IS FINALIZED.THE LADY TOLD ME IT WILL TAKE AT LEAST 2 YEARS TO SELECT THE FINAL PLACE WERE THE NUCLEAR WASTE WILL BE STORED FOREVER.RIGHT NOW THE WASTE IS BEING STORED IN A CURRENT NUCLEAR SITE.MOST LIKELY PORT ELGIN WERE BRUCE NUCLEAR IS LOCATED.BUT I FORGOT WHICH SITE SHE TOLD ME IT WAS STORED.SO I MAY BE WRONG ABOUT THE PORT ELGIN SITE.BUT ANYWAY,I NEVER EVEN HEARD ABOUT THIS UNDER GROUND SITE IF I WOULD NOT HAVE STUMBLED UPON IT IN ELMWOOD.I'LL KEEP UP WITH THE SITUATION TO SEE WERE THE NUKE MATERIAL WILL BE STORED.

Nuclear waste storage depot attracts southern Ontario towns

Published on Monday February 20, 2012

John Spears

You can call it a repository for used nuclear fuel in an adaptive phased management program. You can call it a nuclear waste site.Either way, a surprising cluster of municipalities in south-western Ontario’s rural heartland are saying they might want to be the place where Canada’s spent nuclear fuel is stored for thousands of years. No final decisions on a waste site have been made – or will be for several years, under the multi-step process put in place by the Nuclear Waste Management Organization. And the western Ontario municipalities who are showing interest will be judged against sites proposed by other communities scattered across Canada. But it’s a surprising show of interest for a region of the country best known for green fields, blue water and Alice Munro.Of course, it’s also the home of the Bruce nuclear station, north of Kincardine on the shore of Lake Huron – and that’s the touchstone for the interest in the waste site. The Bruce nuclear operation already keeps its own waste in surface storage areas. For some, it doesn’t seem a big leap to take waste from nuclear power stations in Pickering, Darlington, Gentilly, Que. and Point Lepreau, N.B., and from research centres in Whiteshell, Man. and Chalk River.Mayor Bill Goetz, mayor of South Bruce, puts it succinctly, as he notes that Highway 9 runs straight through his rural municipality on the way to the Bruce plant:“It’s going to come through here coming or going, so we thought we might as well be in the mix.”
So far, South Bruce and its near neighbours Huron-Kinloss, Brockton and Saugeen Shores have done little more than ask for more information. They’ve taken a tour of the Bruce plant, or are scheduled to do so.
and all communities are still in the earliest stages. It’s likely to take seven to 10 years to narrow the field down to one site. It’s still a long way of making a commitment to host the site. The Nuclear Waste Management Organization, charged with the project, has designed a nine-step process for site selectionThe proposed site will then undergo a detailed environmental assessment before construction starts. The earliest date a storage facility could open, it figures, 2035.And any or all may be ruled out by geology. The storage site will be buried at least 500 metres deep, and must be placed in stable, solid rock that doesn’t permit water to flow through.Still, interest is percolating, and in some ways feeds on itself.David Inglis, mayor of Brockton and Warden of Bruce County, explains:“We thought: Other communities are doing it in our area, and if it’s going to be in our backyard, we want to know all we can about it. If it is in Bruce County, it’s going to affect the whole county for infrastructure and jobs.”The interest discourages some residents who are suspicious of the long term impact of storing tonnes of highly radioactive waste, for millennia to come.
“I think it’s the money that’s speaking to them,” says Ruth MacLean, a minister who lives in Kincardine, and on Bruce Beach in Huron-Kinloss.“I just think this is a company town – everybody knows what side their bread is buttered on.”A fuel storage site in the area is also likely to draw scrutiny in the U.S. A string of Detroit-area municipalities have already protested construction of a low and mid-level nuclear waste storage area now under way at the Bruce site.It won’t hold used fuel, but more mundane objects such as clothing and mops used in radioactive areas.Local Ontario politicians don’t deny the lure of the money.“We’re strictly a farming community and we haven’t got much industry,” says Goetz in South Bruce. “We’re struggling to keep going.”Excavating and building the storage area will employ up to 2,000 workers at a time on a project costing billions.“They estimated anywhere from $18 to $24 billion,” says Goetz. “And in the end they figure there would be 200 permanent employees. That’s the part that would really help us.”(In fact, the NWMO says the lifetime cost of the site will be $16 to $24 billion. That’s equivalent to $6 to $8 billion cash in hand today.)Even some who are apprehensive about bidding for the project want to get more information.
Ruth Dalton, who runs a pottery business in Ripley – part of Huron-Kinloss – is nervous but wants to get solid information.“I definitely want to find out more about it, before everybody goes ahead with this crazy notion,” says Dalton.“Where the truth lies you don’t know, and I’m not sure anybody does know.”
Given that much waste already exists, she says, storing it “might be the lesser of many evils.”But Ruth MacLean says she’s not sure how impartial the information will be. The nuclear industry will marshal its arguments, she knows. The question is: Will there be qualified experts to challenge their point of view?
The mayors note that their people have lived near the Bruce nuclear facility since the first reactor was built there in the 1960s.“Our residents are quite familiar, and I’d like to say comfortable with the nuclear industry as a whole,” says Mitch Twolan of Huron-Kinloss.Wind turbines are a much hotter issue in the community than nuclear waste, says Twolan.“Something has to be done with this spent fuel. As a politician, the easiest thing to do is pass it on to the next generation. I think what you’re hearing from councils around Bruce County is that because we are familiar and comfortable with it, let’s do something now rather than later.”
As for the argument that a waste storage site would damage the agriculture and tourist industries, Twolan – a real estate agent – sees no evidence that the nuclear industry can’t co-exist peacefully with farmers and cottagers.“The nuclear facility has been up there for years, and the prices at Bruce Beach are not going down,” Twolan says. But all the mayors agree that their communities need to be on board with whatever decision is taken.Saugeen Shores – the former communities of Port Elgin and Southampton, north of the Bruce station – has delayed taking further steps toward seeking the waste site until May, to allow more time for its residents to get informed.Mayor Mike Smith says he hopes the Nuclear Waste Management Organization will help send a mailing to every household in the community. But there’s residual sympathy for the nuclear industry, he says, since about one in three workers at the Bruce Station lives in Saugeen Shores.

Debate over possible nearby nuclear waste site buried

Last Updated: July 21, 2012 12:00am

The Harper government’s announcement that it will examine the issues surrounding wind turbines in Southwestern Ontario made front-page headlines this week — at the same time, the federal government’s inquiry into building an underground nuclear waste site on Lake Huron’s shores is receiving very little public and media attention. The public hearings in Ottawa will end in early August, but hardly anybody knows about them. The construction of an underground waste disposal site at the Bruce nuclear complex on the Canadian side of Lake Huron is proposed, and the waste site would be located just over a kilometre from Lake Huron and would house all the radioactive waste from 20 commercial nuclear power reactors in Ontario, with the exception of irradiated nuclear fuel. What are the merits and demerits of this proposal?Nuclear fuel bundles and other forms of nuclear waste would need to be transported to Lake Huron by truck or train. Transportation by helicopter has already been rejected due to environmental safety concerns. Other countries, like the United States, Japan, and Germany, have encountered huge public opposition to transporting and storing nuclear wastes. For instance, one Japanese ship carrying nuclear waste was forced to stay at sea while German television stations regularly transmit disturbing scenes of protestors surrounding trains that are trying to secretly transport nuclear waste. If Ottawa agrees to host a huge nuclear waste site, the timing of the transport of nuclear waste on provincial highways would need to be kept secret due to the prospect of public opposition and possible terrorism. Some roads, like the major highways crossing through Toronto and southwestern Canada might have to be shut down entirely so that there was no chance of a terrorist strike against trucks carrying nuclear waste or public protest. The nuclear waste would need to be stored in containers that would last tens of thousands of years, without leaking into the Great Lakes water system. No such containers have been invented. The long-term sustainability of the current containers manufactured in Japan cannot be precisely calculated. Improved containers might be invented hundreds of years from now, but this places an unfair burden on future generations to clean up this generation’s mess.
Vitrified glass logs could be used to store some waste so that it is less prone to leakage and stealing, but this process is expensive and not technically developed. For now, there is no solution to this problem so most nuclear waste is stored in liquid pools close to the nuclear power plants scattered all around North America.
Atomic Energy of Canada Limited estimated the cost of site construction somewhere in Canada would be more than $13 billion, approximately the same as Canada’s entire annual defence budget. Now that AECL has been sold by the federal government, which corporations or government agencies would bear the cost of site construction? Which governments would bear the cost of overruns, commonly expected in all types of huge construction projects? The temptation might be for the federal government to agree to take other countries’ waste in order to offset prohibitive costs.Ensuring the waste site’s security — more than tens of thousands of years —will be hugely expensive. Some jobs, created over many human generations, would help the local economy but only marginally. The monetary advantages for residents of creating a few local jobs would be offset by the many risks incurred, including possible leakage into underground water systems. The costs of increased insurance and emergency planning must also be properly factored into the decision-making process. The president of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission was fired by the federal government for being too strict in her enforcement of reactor safety regulations. The process of firing her raised serious questions about the lack of democratic decision-making under the Conservative government of Prime Minister Stephen Harper.Since then, the federal government’s failure to establish a new arms-length agency to launch, guide, and determine any waste plan’s acceptability means that the whole process of seeking democratic input has been heavily undermined, decreasing public acceptability further.Indeed, Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall was accused of subverting the nuclear hearings because he proposed that a research reactor be built within three years, at the same time as the provincial government was holding public hearings to gauge public sentiment on large-scale reactor construction combined with uranium enrichment. In the end, Saskatchewan seems to have decided against building a nuclear waste disposal site, leaving the problem up to Ontario to clean up.Due to undemocratic decision-making, future Canadians could end up with a liability for hundreds of thousands of years, long after nuclear power plants have fallen out of favour.Erika Simpson is an associate professor of international relations in the department of political science at the Western University, the author of NATO and the Bomb and past vice-chair of Pugwash Canada.
