Honor Killing is Absolutely Islamic!
by Syed Kamran Mirza 01 Jul, 2005 (Updated 16 Jan, 2008)

Honor killings, which occur with shocking regularity in certain parts of the Middle East and South Asia, target women whose actions – actual or suspected – violate the honor of their family, an honor which is thought to depend on the sexual purity of its female members. Victims are always being killed/slaughtered mercilessly by her own family members. Honor killing is a manifestation of global phenomenon in general and Muslim nations in particular. Since this terrible inhumane practice does exists only among the Muslims of the world—very often civilized people do blame Islam as the precursor of this dreadful act. Most others do not agree with this notion at all; and they try to put the blame on the tribal/cultural practice, and do not consider Islam is anyway responsible for it. In this essay I shall analyze the real issues, cause and origin, and pattern of this heinous act amongst the Muslims of the world to postulate if there is any link, or incitements that originates from the very core of Islam.

What is honor killing?

Honor killing is the bone chilling horrific cruelty committed by the family members—father, mother, brothers, brother-in-laws, even in some cases own sisters also. In this terrible episode the victim is always the daughter/sister or other blood related young women who get killed. Perpetrators are always the family members stated above. Family honor is one of the core values of Arab society. Anything from speaking with an unrelated man, to rumored pre-marital loss of virginity, to an extra-marital affair, refuses forced marriages; marry according to their will; or even women and girls who have been raped—can stain or destroy the family honor. Therefore, family members (parents, brothers, or sisters) kill the victim in order to remove the stain or maintain, and protect the honor of the family. Killers are given light sentences, sometimes with little or no jail time at all. The killers mainly defend their act of murder by referring to the Koran and Islam. Family guardian will say that they are merely following the directives set down in their Islamic ethical beliefs.

The chips that are good for your health

Pharmacy to sell edible microchips that will alert doctors if patients are not taking right medicines. Steve Connor Author Biography Tuesday 17 January 2012
An edible microchip that records the precise details of a patient's pill regime will be available in Britain by the end of year following a commercial deal that opens the door to an era of digital medicines.Click HERE to view Smart pill: How the new technology works'

An American biomedical company has signed up with a British healthcare firm to sell digestible sensors, each smaller than a grain of sand, that can trigger the transmission of medical information from a patient's body to the mobile phone of a relative or carer. The aim is to develop a suite of intelligent medicines that can help patients and their carers keep track of which pills are taken at what time of day, in order to ensure that complex regimes of drugs are given the best possible chance of working effectively.Ultimately, the plan is for every one of the many pills taken each day by some of the most chronically-ill patients, especially those with mental health problems, to be digitally time-stamped as they are digested within the body. The healthcare company Lloyds- pharmacy said it intends to sell the edible microchips of Proteus Biomedical of California by the end of the year, as part of a trial to test whether NHS patients would be prepared to pay privately to ensure that they or their relatives take the right medicines at the right time.

There is a huge problem with medicines not being taken correctly, said Steve Gray, healthcare services director of Lloydspharmacy.Anyone taking several medications knows how easy it can be to lose track of whether or not you've taken the correct tablets that day,he added.Add to that complex health issues and families caring for loved ones who many not live with them and you can appreciate the benefits of an information service that helps patients to get the most from their treatments and for families to help them to remain well.Lloydspharmacy said the World Health Organisation has found that about half of all patients fail to take their medicines correctly, which can lead to people not getting the full benefits of treatment, or ending up with harmful side-effects.Unused prescription medicines are estimated to cost the NHS nearly £400m a year. The Proteus technology is based on the company's digestible sensors, which are no bigger than a grain of sand. They are composed of the ingredients commonly found in food and are activated when they come into contact with stomach fluids. At the heart of the technology is a tiny silicon wafer separating tiny quantities of copper and magnesium, which effectively forms a microscopic battery that generates an electric current when immersed in the acidic environment of the stomach. These electric currents, which can be given individual signatures to match the drug taken with the edible sensor, are detected passively by an intelligent patch stuck to the patient's skin, in much the same way that electrocardiogram (ECG) skin patches can record the electric currents within the heart.

The patch, which is designed to be worn for seven days, includes a flexible battery and chip that records the information and sends it by Bluetooth wireless technology to the mobile phone of a relative or professional carer. In the future the goal is a fully integrated system that creates an information product that helps patients and their families with the demands of complex pharmacy, said Andrew Thompson, the chief executive and founder of Proteus Biomedical. What we know is that we've created many pharmaceuticals with great potential but much of that potential is not realised because these drugs are not being used properly.Neither company was prepared to comment on the cost of the digestible microchips, but industry sources suggested a starting cost of about £50 per week.

EZEKIEL 7:19

Eurozone bail-out fund loses triple A rating
Today JAN 16,12 @ 20:43 By Valentina Pop

BRUSSELS - The Eurozone's bail-out fund was downgraded by one notch to AA+ by the US ratings agency Standard&Poor's on Monday (16 January) - a move likely to put an extra financial burden on contributing nations, many of whom were themselves downgraded last week.Designed to fund the rescue packages for Greece, Ireland and Portugal, the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF) owed its triple A rating to guarantees from eurozone countries, two of which - France and Austria - saw their own top rating cut by one notch on Friday, along with other countries further down the ratings ladder. The EFSF’s obligations are no longer fully supported either by guarantees from EFSF members rated AAA by S&P, or by AAA rated securities. Credit enhancements sufficient to offset what we view as the reduced creditworthiness of guarantors are currently not in place,Standard&Poor's said in a statement. The move is likely to lower the firepower of the fund, unless contributing countries step up their loan guarantees to the facility. The downgrade has a consequence - if it wants to keep its triple A status, it will have to lend less or, if not, the cost of lending will go up. If it wants to maintain the same capacity to lend, at the same price, you will have to have additional contributions from member states,European Central Bank chief Mario Draghi said on Monday evening during a hearing in the European Parliament in Strasbourg.EFSF chairman Klaus Regling took note of the downgrade and argued that its lending capacity will not be changed. The EFSF has sufficient means to fulfill its commitments under current and potential future adjustment programmes until the European Stability Mechanism [permanent bail-out fund] becomes operational in July 2012.

Eurozone finance ministers chairman Jean Claude Juncker, whose country is hosting the EFSF, also sought to downplay the effects of the downgrade.S&P's decision will not reduce EFSF’s lending capacity of €440 billion. EFSF will continue to be backed by unconditional and irrevocable guarantees by euro area member states. He added that the other two major ratings agencies, Fitch and Moody's have not downgraded the fund or indicated they would do so.Earlier that day, a commission spokesman went to some lengths to downplay the importance of Friday's decision to downgrade Austria, Cyprus, France, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia and Spain. He argued that ratings agencies are not privy to all the economic and financial data about member states that the EU commission has.ECB chief Draghi also noted that all ratings agencies had a terrible loss of reputation over last crisis and said that his institution in the last few years has avoided having a mechanical reliance on them.
Critics says that ratings agencies, having failed to spot the build-up to the financial crisis in 2008, are now being over-zealous to make up for it.

Draft text: EU ministers worried by Israeli actions in Jordan Valley Today JAN 16,12 By Andrew Rettman

BRUSSELS - A draft statement for EU foreign ministers next week says Israel's monopolisation of land and water in the occupied West Bank is worrying and endangers the two-state solution. The text - provisionally agreed by mid-level EU diplomats on Monday (16 January) - says: Against a backdrop of worrying developments in 2011, particularly with respect to settlements under Area C, the EU reaffirms its commitment to a two-state solution ... The viability of a two-state solution must not be jeopardised. The draft conclusions also say the EU welcomes Jordan's recent efforts to restart Israeli-Palestinian talks and urges both sides to build confidence and create an atmosphere of trust for the negotiations.Area C is a 62 percent chunk of the occupied West Bank designated by the Oslo accords in the 1990s as being under full Israeli control. The reference by ministers to worrying developments is based on an internal report by EU heads of mission in Israel from 14 December which blames it for using red tape to force the native Palestinian population off its most fertile farmland.

The report - seen by EUobserver - notes that in 1967 there were between 200,000 and 320,000 Palestinians in the Jordan Valley, most of which lies in Area C, but that just 56,000 live there today. The Jewish population has grown from 1,200 to 310,000 over the same period. It notes that Israeli farms use most of the water resources in the area to produce export crops. Meanwhile, Palestinians get access to just 25 percent of available water at higher prices, limiting them to low intensity agriculture. All 27 EU countries endorsed the internal report and one EU diplomat said the draft ministers' statement is likely to go through more or less unchanged.
Another diplomat warned that pro-Israeli EU countries - such as the Netherlands and the Czech Republic - will try to make sure the formal EU communique does not offend their ally. There are still two or three [lower-level] meetings this week before the EU ministers' meeting next week [23 January], so the text could change completely, or there might be no text at all if they can't agree, the contact said.

Iran warns of consequences if Arabs back oil sanctions ReutersBy Ramin Mostafavi | Reuters – Sun, Jan 15, 2012

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran warned Gulf Arab neighbors on Sunday they would suffer consequences if they raised oil output to replace Iranian crude facing an international ban.In signs of Tehran's deepening isolation over its refusal to halt nuclear activity that could yield atomic bombs, China's premier was in Saudi Arabia probing for greater access to its huge oil and gas reserves and Britain voiced confidence a once hesitant European Union would soon ban oil imports from Iran.
Major importers of Iranian oil were long loath to embargo the lifeblood of Iran's economy because of fears this would send oil prices rocketing at a time - amidst debt and deficit crises and high unemployment - when they could least afford it.But strong momentum for oil sanctions has been created by a U.N. watchdog report saying Iran appeared to have worked on designing an atom bomb.A new U.S. law signed by President Barack Obama on New Year's Eve would freeze out of the U.S. financial system any institution dealing with Iran's central bank - which processes its oil revenues. If fully applied, the law would make it impossible for most countries to buy Iranian oil. Washington is offering waivers to countries to let them keep buying Iranian oil for now, but demanding they gradually cut their imports back.Leaders from some of the Asian countries that buy the most Iranian oil have begun touring the Middle East to secure alternative supply lines from Arab states. European buyers suggest they will also lean more heavily on Arab oil producers should an EU ban come into effect.Feeling increasingly encircled, Iran's hardline Islamic clerical elite has lashed back by threatening to block the main Middle East oil shipping route. Since the New Year, Tehran also began to enrich uranium in an underground bunker and sentenced an Iranian-American citizen to death on espionage charges.Tensions in the Gulf have caused occasional spikes in oil prices in recent weeks. The sanctions are also having a real impact on Iran's domestic economy, causing prices of imported staples to soar and the rial currency to tumble.Iran holds a parliamentary election in March, its first since a presidential vote in 2009 led to eight months of street protests. Those demonstrations were put down by force, but since then the "Arab Spring" has shown the vulnerability of states in the region to public anger fueled by economic hardship.

IRAN WARNS GULF ARABS

Iranian OPEC Governor Mohammad Ali Khatibi said Tehran would regard as an unfriendly act any move by neighboring Gulf Arab oil exporters to make up for Iranian crude. If (they) give the green light to replacing Iran's oil these countries would be the main culprits for whatever happens in the region - including the Strait of Hormuz, Khatibi told the Sharq daily newspaper, referring to the narrow sea channel through which a third of the world's oil tanker traffic passes. Our Arab neighbor countries should not cooperate with these (U.S. and European) adventurers... These measures will not be perceived as friendly, he said.Saudi Oil Minister Ali al-Naimi said on Saturday the world's No. 1 oil exporter - the only one in OPEC with significant unused capacity - was ready and able to meet any increase in demand. He made no direct reference to sanctions on Iran.Iran's navy commander Habibollah Sayyari said Tehran could exert control over the Strait of Hormuz. The United States, whose warships patrol the region, says it will not tolerate any attempt to disrupt shipping through the strait.Military experts say Iran could not challenge the huge U.S.-led fleet that guards the strait for long, but its threats raise the risk of miscalculation that could flare into a clash. The United States and Israel postponed military exercises scheduled to take place in coming weeks to later in the year. Officials in both countries denied the postponement was connected with the increasing tension over Iran.Oil prices were down at the end of last week as anticipation of downgrades by Standard & Poor's of several indebted euro zone economies countered the buoyant effect of anxiety about Iranian threats to shipping. But the standoff over Iran pointed to continued support for higher prices, brokers and analysts said.

Iran's foreign ministry said on Sunday it had received a letter from Washington about the Strait of Hormuz and there was no decision yet on whether to reply. A ministry spokesman did not divulge the contents of the letter.Tehran had said on Saturday it had written to Washington with evidence the CIA was involved in the assassination of a nuclear scientist, blown up by a bomb attached to his car last week, the latest of several such killings.Western countries suspect Iran is trying to develop nuclear weapons capability. Iran says it is only interested in nuclear technology for peaceful purposes such as generating electricity.

CHINA SEEKS OIL OPTIONS IN GULF

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao was pressing Saudi Arabia to open its oil and gas wealth to more Chinese investment, Chinese media said on Sunday. China has been Iran's biggest oil buyer.Although Beijing opposes further international sanctions on Iran, it has already cut its purchases of Iranian oil by more than half for the first two months of this year.China and Saudi Arabia are both in important stages of development and there are broad prospects for enhancing cooperation, Wen told Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Nayef on Saturday, according to Xinhua news agency.Michal Meidan, an analyst with London's Eurasia Group, said: Beijing is concerned with the potential response to bellicose Iranian statements and the spike in oil prices that would ensue from greater turmoil in Syria and Iran.Wen was also scheduled to visit the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, two other big OPEC exporters across the Gulf from Iran.British Foreign Secretary William Hague said on Sunday he was confident the 27-member European Union would impose resounding sanctions on Iran's oil industry and possibly other sectors at an EU foreign ministers meeting on January 23.

After protracted reluctance to act arising from the dependence of some debt-ridden EU economies on Iranian oil, member states have agreed in principle to ban it and have been working on details of how this will be implemented.Last year EU countries collectively bought about a fifth of Iranian exports, roughly on par with China.
Any EU-wide prohibition of Iranian oil would probably take effect gradually.Grace periods on existing contracts of one to 12 months have been proposed to allow importers to find other suppliers before implementing an embargo.Hague said: Our sanctions are part of trying to get Iran to change course and to enter negotiations and we should not be deterred from implementing those. We will continue to intensify our own sanctions and those of the European Union.

IRANIAN DEFIANCE

Some analysts say Iran's leadership, which has thrived on defiance of the West since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, is more likely to dig in rather than back off in response to sanctions aimed at stopping a nuclear program many Iranians regard as a matter of national sovereignty and modernization.A year after the collapse of the last big power talks with Iran, its deepening nuclear defiance has raised concern of war if harsher sanctions do not change its course.Israel, reputed to have the Middle East's only nuclear arsenal, sees Iran's nuclear and missile projects as a mortal threat which it will resort to force as a last resort to stop. The risk of Israel triggering Middle East upheaval with a unilateral strike has the war-weary United States worried.U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman General Martin Dempsey is to make his first visit to Israel on Thursday. Israeli media say he will try to persuade his hosts not to surprise Washington on Iran.Israel's vice prime minister voiced disappointment that the new U.S. legislation gives Obama leeway to allow sanctions waivers to countries to keep buying Iranian crude. The (U.S.) Senate passed a resolution, by a majority of 100-to-one, to impose these sanctions, and in the U.S. administration there is hesitation for fear of oil prices rising this year, out of election-year considerations,Moshe Yaalon told Israel Radio.Obama has said he is determined to deny Tehran the means to develop an atom bomb. His aides cast their sanctions strategy as a bid to work collaboratively with foreign powers and win over states that import Iranian oil without shocking energy markets.(Additional reporting by Robin Pomeroy in Tehran, Daniel Fineren in London, Dan Williams in Jerusalem, Adrian Croft in London, Chris Buckley in Beijing; Writing by Mark Heinrich; Editing by Peter Graff)

Israel requests delay in US-Israel missile defense exercise By Laura Rozen | The Envoy – Sun, Jan 15, 2012

A major U.S.-Israeli missile defense exercise that had been planned to take place in the spring has been postponed due to a request by the Israeli Defense Ministry, American and Israeli officials told Yahoo News Sunday.Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak issued a request to the Pentagon last month that the planned joint exercise be postponed, a U.S. official told Yahoo News Sunday. It was Barak, the U.S. official said on condition of anonymity. The Jewish Telegraph Agency's Ron Kampeas reported earlier Sunday that the exercise was being postponed, ostensibly because of Israeli budget cuts. But American officials are privately concerned that the Israeli request for a postponement of the exercise could be one potential warning sign that Israel is trying to leave its options open for conducting a strike on Iran's nuclear facilities in the spring. In that case, it would not wish American forces to then be on the ground, the thinking goes.

An Israeli official downplayed that interpretation. He told Yahoo News Sunday that another possible reason for the delay may be that the Americans and Israelis both considered that such a huge maneuver at this time of heightened tensions between the West and Iran could potentially inflame the situation. The Israeli Defense Ministry made the decision in consultation with the Pentagon, he said, and the two nations' defense agencies had been expected to issue a joint statement indicating the exercise will be postponed until the second half of the year. Some Washington observers found both cited Israeli rationales for the delay--budget cuts and Israeli concern about further raising tensions with Iran--as conspicuously thin.U.S. officials publicly, like their Israeli counterparts, however, said such delays aren't all that unusual.I do know there were a variety of factors at play in this case, but in general, leaders from both sides believe that optimum participation by all units in best achieved later in the year,U.S. European Command (EUCOM) spokesman Captain John Ross told Yahoo News by email Sunday.Following close consultation between US European Command (EUCOM) and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), exercise Austere Challenge 12 will be conducted during the second half of 2012,Pentagon spokesman John Kirby told Yahoo News by email Sunday. It is not at all uncommon for routine exercises to be postponed,Kirby added.General Martin Dempsey, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is due to arrive in Israel Thursday for consultations, the Associated Press reported. It will be Dempsey's first trip to Israel since assuming the top Pentagon military post in September. The Obama administration is concerned that Iran's recent statement that it is expanding nuclear operations with more advanced equipment may push Israel closer to a strike, the AP reported said.

Stories about overreach from Washington, D.C. abound, but just when you think you’ve heard them all comes yet another that makes you shake your head in disbelief and wonder just whom is supposed to be working for whom in this grand old Republic of ours.Taking into account that most of us want clean air, fresh water to drink and a sustainable environment – and that government has a role to play in ensuring these resources are preserved – there comes a point where that role grows well beyond its original intent and begins to infringe on the constitutional rights of the citizens. Just ask Mike and Chantell Sackett, who are battling the leviathan Environmental Protection Agencyjust to be able to build a home on land they bought years ago in Idaho. They bought all of the permits. They spent thousands of dollars preparing the land. But just as they were ready to begin construction, the EPA swooped in, pronounced their property a wetlands (even though it sits in the middle of a residential neighborhood that contains sewer lines and scores of other homes) and issued a compliance order calling on them to return the land to its original state or face daily fines of $37,500per day.

And here is where the comedy of errorsreallybegins.Surely officials at the EPA would be reasonable, the Sackett’s thought. After all, there were homes surrounding their plot of land. There was infrastructure. And they’d done everything they were supposed to do to “comply” with all of the rules. With all of that in mind, they appealed to the agency for a hearing on the issue. But instead of hearing the couple out, EPA officials blew them off, rejecting their appeal out of hand. So, with little alternative, the couple decided to take the plunge, hire some lawyers and sue the EPA to get the agency to listen. The agency’s response? The EPA said the couple wasn’t allowed to sue. Huh? On the one hand, the agency was arguing that it wasmore than capableof handling complaints like that of the Sackett’s through its administrative process. But on the other hand, it wasn’t giving the coupleaccessto its administrative process: A classic Catch-22.As if that outrage wasn’t enough, the agency then tried to claim that no one has the constitutional right to bypass a compliance order and go straight to federal court for relief. So, no right to appeal, and no right to sue.Sure.Throughout, the EPA maintained that the couples’ land indeedwason a wetlands so, undaunted, the couple took the economic plunge anddidbring their case to federal court where, in the end, it wound up before the U.S. Supreme Court. And there, the tragic comedy continued.

Justice Elena Kagan, a former solicitor general and one of the high court’s most liberal members, took the EPA’s side. Oblivious to the fact that the EPAdeniedthe Sackett’s initial request for an appeal, Kagan asked, Couldn’t you have gotten the legal determination that you wanted through that process? Attorneys for the plaintiffs patiently explained that process was prohibitively costly and time-consuming – especially since they didn’t live in a wetlands area to begin with.
The good news is, at least some of the justices were empathetic to the Sackett’s plight, seemingly realizing the daunting task they faced in trying to get an unresponsive system to be…responsive.Don’t you think most ordinary homeowners would say this kind of thing can’t happen in the United States?Justice Samuel Alito asked Justice Department attorney Malcolm Stewart.Source:

Fluoride Linked to #1 Cause of Death in New Research
Anthony Gucciardi Infowars.com January 17, 2012

Groundbreaking new research has linked sodium fluoride to cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death worldwide. Researchers found that fluoride consumption directly stimulates the hardening of your arteries, a condition known as atherosclerosis that is highly correlatedwith the #1 killer. Sodium fluoride is currently added to the water supply of many cities worldwide, despite extreme opposition from health professionals and previous studieslinking it to decreased IQ and infertility. In their research, scientists examined the relationship between fluoride intake and the hardening (calcification) of the arteries. Studying more than 60 patients, the researchers found a significant correlation between fluoride consumption and the calcification of your arteries. Published in the January edition of the journal Nuclear Medicine Communications, the research highlights the fact that mass fluoride exposure may be to blame for the cardiovascular disease epidemic that takes more lives each year than cancer. In 2008, cardiovascular killed 17 million people.According to the authors of the study:The coronary fluoride uptake value in patients with cardiovascular events was significantly higher than in patients without cardiovascular events.Amazingly, this is not the first report to come out on the dangers of water fluoridation, however the United States government along with other nations have allowed for the continued fluoridation of the public water supply despite these key findings. In fact, the U.S. government has even gone on record stating that a reduction in water fluoridation needs to occur following the results of a massive study that found water fluoridation affected cognitive function to the point of lowering the IQ of children. It turns out that the announcement was little more than a public relations stunt to curtail the massive wave of activism that followed the findings.

Government Admits Dangers Yet Continues to Pump Fluoride Into Your Water Supply
Over 24 other studies have unanimously concluded that fluoride negatively impacts cognitive function. In addition to these 24 studies focusing on cognition, over 100 animal studies have linked fluoride to an increase in male infertility, diabetes, and a whole host of other health problems. In the latest study on cognition, it was found that that 28% of the children who lived in an area where fluoride levels were low achieved the highest test scores. This means that the children exposed to less fluoride scored normal or advanced, while only 8% of fluoridated children did the same.In fact, the safety precautions regarding sodium fluoride are quite telling themselves:

Risk and Safety Phrases.
R25 – Toxic if swallowed.
R32 – Contact with acid liberates very toxic gas.
R36/38 – Irritating to skin and eyes.
S1/2 – Keep locked up and out of reach of children.
S22 – Do not breathe dust.
S36 – Wear suitable protective clothing.
S45 - In case of accident or if you feel unwell, seek medical advice immediately (show the label whenever possible.)

But what about cavity prevention?

Since 1962 the government has recommended fluoride levels between 0.7 and 1.2 milligrams per liter in the nations drinking water. Toted as an excellent cavity blocker, fluoride has been praised for its alleged power to prevent tooth decay and boost oral health. Research has now revealed that fluoride, the very substance that is supposed to prevent tooth decay, actually does nothing to prevent against cavities. In fact, vitamin D has been found to be significantly more effective in cavity prevention without the extreme side effects. Instead of damaging your body, vitamin D slashes your risk of just about everything fluoride consumption causes.

According to the latest numbers, over 72 percent of Americans drink water treated with fluoride. Is it any wonder that cardiovascular disease rates are off the charts? Perhaps most concerning is the fact that fluoride does not even prevent cavities, which is the very reason legislators have pushed to keep it in the public water supply despite the links to deadly disease. Even if fluoride was found to prevent cavities, would it be worth the adverse effects? Fluoride should be completely removed from the international water supply as it is a threat to public health. Until the proper legislation is passed, acquiring a high-quality water filter that removes fluoride is vital for the health perseverance of you and your family. This article first appeared at NaturalSociety.com

Gingrich: Palestinians are an invented people By EMILY SCHULTHEIS | 12/9/11 3:50 PM EST Updated: 12/9/11 3:54 PM EST

In a clip from The Jewish Channel’s interview with Newt Gingrich, the former House Speaker gives this hard-line answer when asked if he considers himself a Zionist:
Well, I believe that the Jewish people have a right to have a state, and I believe that the commitments that were made at the time – now, remember, there was no Palestine as a state, it was part of the Ottoman Empire, and I think that we’ve had an invented Palestinian people who are in fact Arabs and were historically part of the Arab community. And they had a chance to go many places and for a variety of political reasons we have sustained this war against Israel now since the 1940s. And I think it’s tragic.Gingrich isn’t the only GOP candidate who’s stood strongly with Israel this week, but this answer shows just how far-right his Israel position is.

Strong earthquake hits off Antarctica's coast
By the CNN Wire Staff updated 6:05 AM EST, Mon January 16, 2012

(CNN) -- A strong 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck Sunday off the coast of Antarctica, prompting a warning that there was a small possibility it could trigger a tsunami. The tremor was centered in waters south of South America's southern tip, about 334 miles (539 kilometers) west of Coronation Island and 388 miles northeast of Palmer Station in Antarctica, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. It hit at 9:40 a.m. local time (8:40 a.m. ET) on Sunday, according to the federal agency, and had an estimated depth of 6.2 miles.Afterward, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center released a statement saying that there appears to be no threat of destructive widespread tsunami because of the quake. But the agency did state there is a small possibility of a local or regional tsunami that could affect coasts located usually no more than a few hundred kilometers from the earthquake epicenter.Authorities in the region near the epicenter should be made aware of this possibility, the warning center added.

MUSLIM NATIONS

EZEKIEL 38:1-12
1 And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
2 Son of man, set thy face against Gog,(RULER) the land of Magog,(RUSSIA) the chief prince of Meshech(MOSCOW)and Tubal,(TOBOLSK) and prophesy against him,
3 And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech(MOSCOW) and Tubal:
4 And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws,(GOD FORCES THE RUSSIA-MUSLIMS TO MARCH) and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords:

7 Be thou prepared, and prepare for thyself, thou, and all thy company that are assembled unto thee, and be thou a guard unto them.
8 After many days thou shalt be visited: in the latter years thou shalt come into the land that is brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people, against the mountains of Israel, which have been always waste: but it is brought forth out of the nations, and they shall dwell safely all of them.
9 Thou shalt ascend and come like a storm, thou shalt be like a cloud to cover the land, thou, and all thy bands, and many people with thee.(RUSSIA-EGYPT AND MUSLIMS)
10 Thus saith the Lord GOD; It shall also come to pass, that at the same time shall things come into thy mind, and thou shalt think an evil thought:
11 And thou shalt say, I will go up to the land of unwalled villages; I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates,
12 To take a spoil, and to take a prey; to turn thine hand upon the desolate places that are now inhabited, and upon the people that are gathered out of the nations, which have gotten cattle and goods, that dwell in the midst of the land.

42 He shall stretch forth his hand also upon the countries: and the land of Egypt shall not escape.
43 But he shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt: and the Libyans and the Ethiopians shall be at his steps.

EZEKIEL 39:1-8
1 Therefore, thou son of man, prophesy against Gog,(LEADER OF RUSSIA) and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech (MOSCOW) and Tubal: (TUBOLSK)

3 And I will smite thy bow out of thy left hand, and will cause thine arrows to fall out of thy right hand.
4 Thou shalt fall upon the mountains of Israel, thou, and all thy bands,( ARABS) and the people that is with thee: I will give thee unto the ravenous birds of every sort, and to the beasts of the field to be devoured.
5 Thou shalt fall upon the open field: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord GOD.
6 And I will send a fire on Magog,(NUCLEAR BOMB) and among them that dwell carelessly in the isles: and they shall know that I am the LORD.
7 So will I make my holy name known in the midst of my people Israel; and I will not let them pollute my holy name any more: and the heathen shall know that I am the LORD, the Holy One in Israel.

30 And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.(NUCLEAR BOMB)
31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come.

Deaths, detentions mount in Syria, activists say
By the CNN Wire Staff updated 7:45 AM EST, Mon January 16, 2012

Zabadani, Syria (CNN) -- The latest bloodshed in the besieged Syrian city of Homs came outside a bakery on Monday, when secret security forces fired indiscriminately on people in line, an opposition activist group said.Five people were killed and nine others were injured in shooting, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.In addition, security forces raided a university housing facility in Aleppo and arrested nine students Monday, the group said.Meanwhile, Syrian state-run media said an armed terrorist group fatally shot Brig. Gen. Mohammed Abdul-Hamid al-Awwad in the Gotta area while he was headed to work. And five soldiers died Monday while trying to defect from the army during a firefight between government and opposition forces in Idlib, according to the human rights group reported. Fifteen other soldiers successfully defected, the group said.

The chaos came after Qatar's ruler became the first Arab leader to suggest Arab troops should intervene militarily in Syria. In an interview that aired on CBS' 60 Minutes on Sunday, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani said, I think for such a situation -- to stop the killing, some troops should go. To stop the killing. The desperation to end a brutal government crackdown was evident Sunday, when crowds in a town surrounded by government troops cheered Arab League monitors who visited while others ran out of the town to escape the fighting inside.Residents of Zabadani, about 50 kilometers (30 miles) northwest of Damascus, lifted one of the monitors onto their shoulders and passed him around the crowd during Sunday's visit.

They told CNN that their water and electricity had been cut off for the past three days, and they showed off wounds they said had been inflicted by pro-government forces. The monitors got a different reception from Syrian soldiers, who berated them as the soldiers carried off the body of one of their comrades they said had been shot by opposition forces. The visit came as another 32 people were killed in several cities by government troops trying to crush a 10-month-old uprising against the rule of President Bashar al-Assad, according to the Local Coordination Committees of Syria, an opposition umbrella group.During a visit to neighboring Lebanon, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon delivered a blunt message to al-Assad: Stop killing your people. On Sunday, al-Assad announced that he was granting amnesty to anti-government demonstrators for all crimes committed since the uprising began in March, the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency reported. The decree applies to people who engaged in peaceful demonstrations, carried or possesses unlicensed weapons or ammunition and draft evaders, SANA said. Fugitives must hand themselves in by the end of the month to benefit from the amnesty, the agency reported. But fear of arrests or violence by the Syrian regime keep many Syrians on edge. When the monitors prepared to leave Zabadani, many of the thousands who greeted the monitors in town urged them to stay, warning that attacks by government troops would resume once they left. Some offered to show the monitors where Syrian tanks were hidden in the fields surrounding the city.Syria was required to pull heavy weaponry out of the cities under the agreement its signed with the Arab League in November, but Zabadani residents said the tanks pulled back only when the monitors were on their way.

Fares Mohammed, an LCC spokesman, said about 100 armored vehicles had surrounded the city for three days, and that power and water had been cut off as the city faced sub-freezing temperatures.More gunfire erupted as the monitors left town, and a soldier at another checkpoint rushed out to hammer at their vehicle.More than 5,000 people have died since mid-March, the United Nations has said. Opposition groups put the toll at more than 6,000. Al-Assad, who has characterized the anti-government protesters as armed gangs, says his security forces are battling terrorists intent on targeting civilians and fomenting unrest. But much of the international community holds al-Assad's regime responsible for killing dissidents.I say again to President Assad of Syria: Stop the violence. Stop killing your people, Ban said at a conference on political reform and democracy in Beirut on Sunday. The path of repression is a dead end.CNN cannot verify many accounts of what is happening in Syria because the government restricts the activity of journalists, though a number of journalists have been allowed in to the country in recent days to travel with Arab League monitors. The Arab League mission began December 26 and is expected to conclude on January 19. It has been mired in controversy from the start, from the choice to head the mission -- Lt. Gen. Mohammed Ahmed al-Dabi, once the head of Sudan's military intelligence -- to reports that the Syrian government was limiting the group's access.CNN's Nic Robertson and Hamdi Alkhshali contributed to this report.

Russian space probe crashes into Pacific
South Asian News Agency (SANA) ⋅ January 16, 2012 ⋅

MOSCOW: A Russian space probe, which was designed to boost the nation’s pride on a bold mission to a moon of Mars but got stuck in Earth orbit instead, came down in flames on Sunday, showering its fragments into the Pacific Ocean south of Chile’s coast. The fragments of the Phobos-Ground landed in water 1,250 kilometres west of Wellington Island off Chile`s southern coast, the Russian military Air and Space Defence Forces said in a statement carried by the country`s news agencies. The military space tracking facilities were monitoring the probe`s crash, its spokesman Col. Alexei Zolotukhin said. The $170 million craft was one of the heaviest and most toxic pieces of space junk ever to crash to Earth, but space officials and experts said the risks posed by its crash were minimal because the toxic rocket fuel on board and most of the craft’s structure would burn up in the atmosphere high above the ground anyway. The Phobos-Ground was designed to travel to one of Mars twin moons, Phobos, land on it, collect soil samples and fly them back to Earth in 2014 in one of the most daunting interplanetary missions ever.It got stranded in Earth’s orbit after its Nov 9 launch, and efforts by Russian and European Space Agency experts to bring it back to life failed.Prof Heiner Klinkrad, Head of The European Space Agencies Space Debris Office that was monitoring the probe`s descent, said the craft didn’t pose any significant risks.

This one is way, way down in the ranking, he said in a telephone interview from his office in Berlin, adding that booster rockets contain more solid segments that may survive fiery re-entries.Thousands of pieces of derelict space vehicles orbit Earth, occasionally posing danger to astronauts and satellites in orbit, but as far as is known, no one has ever been hurt by falling space debris.Russia’s space agency Roscosmos predicted that only between 20 and 30 fragments of the Phobos probe with a total weight of up to 200 kilograms would survive the reentry and plummet to Earth.
Klinkrad agreed with that assessment, adding that about 100 metric tons of space junk fall on Earth every year. This is 200 kilograms out of these 100 tons,he said.
The Phobos-Ground weighed 13.5 metric tons (14.9 tons), and that included a load of 11 metric tons (12 tons) of highly toxic rocket fuel intended for the long journey to the Martian moon of Phobos and left unused as the probe got stranded in orbit around Earth.Roscosmos said that all of the fuel will burn up on reentry, a forecast Klinkrad said was supported by calculations done by NASA and the ESA.He said the craft’s tanks are made of aluminum alloy that has a very low melting temperature, and they will burst at an altitude of more than 100 kilometres.

The space era has seen far larger spacecraft crash.Nasa’s Skylab space station that went down in 1979weighed 77 metric tons (85 tons) and Russia’s Mir space station that de-orbited in 2001 weighed about 130 metric tons (143 tons). Their descent fueled fears around the world, but the wreckage of both fell far away from populated areas. The Phobos-Ground was Russia’s most expensive and the most ambitious space mission since Soviet times. Its mission to the crater-dented, potato-shaped Martian moon was to give scientists precious materials that could shed more light on the genesis of the solar system.Russia’s space chief has acknowledged the Phobos Ground mission was ill-prepared, but said that Roscosmos had to give it the go-ahead so as not to miss the limited Earth-to-Mars launch window. Its predecessor, Mars-96, which was built by the same Moscow-based NPO Lavochkin company, experienced an engine failure and crashed shortly after its launch in 1996. Its crash drew strong international fears because of around 200 grams of plutonium on board.

Where on Earth will failed Russian spacecraft fall?
Pete Spotts | The Christian Science Monitor | Jan 14, 2012

Where will the remains of Russia's derelict Phobos-Grunt tumble back to Earth? That's this weekend's 5-billion-ruble question as space agencies and other satellite trackers around the world try to gauge when and where the spacecraft is likely to begin its fiery descent into Earth's atmosphere.Estimates on when reentry starts range from about 11:20 a.m., Eastern time, on Sunday to 8 p.m. Monday. But they can change several times a day, lending forecasting efforts an air of confusion. The uncertainty highlights the challenge in forecasting a track for an object no one can control, specialists say. And it underscores a need for a freer flow of more accurate information on satellite positions and tracks to avoid collisions that would add to the space junk already on orbit, others add.For its part, Phobos-Grunt appears highly unlikely to add to the space-junk problem. Nor is it deemed much of a threat to people on the ground.Phobos-Grunt launched Nov. 8. The mission aimed to return soil samples from Mars' moon Phobos. The spacecraft also carries a small Chinese probe designed to orbit Mars and gather data on its atmosphere. And it is acting as cosmic sherpa for a small experiment sponsored by the Planetary Society in Pasadena, Calif. The experiment is designed to test whether microbes could survive a prolonged trip from one planet to another housed, in this case, in an artificial meteoroid. The meteoroid was to have returned to Earth along with soil samples from Phobos.

Phobos-Grunt failed to leave low-Earth orbit as planned, however. Efforts to communicate with the 13.5-metric ton craft failed, leaving ground controllers with no way to guide it on a predictable path to a controlled reentry.Initially, concerns centered mainly on whether the craft's tanks bearing 11 tons of toxic fuel could survive the plunge and then present a hazard to people on the ground. But engineers with Russia's space agency Roscosmos and with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration have calculated that the aluminum fuel tanks will burst before the craft falls below about 60 miles in altitude, allowing the fuel to dissipate harmlessly. This, combined with a relatively low dry mass of just 2.5 tons, means Phobos-Grunt is not considered to be a high-risk entry object, said Heiner Klinkrad, who heads the European Space Agency's Space Debris Office, in a statement released Jan. 12.Still, tracking the craft is important, notes Joshua Horwood, a research scientist with Numerica Corp., a company based in Loveland, Colo., that develops orbital tracking and forecasting software for the US military, in addition to other forms of specialized computer-based tools for civilian aerospace and biomedical clients. In addition to the need to know where and when a spacecraft will end up after reentry, information on where an uncontrolled craft may be headed next is vital to other satellite operators, who may need to move their craft out of the way. But forecasting the track of an uncontrollable craft – especially one in low-Earth orbit, or between 100 and 800 miles up – is fiendishly difficult, Dr. Horwood says.

Even in low-Earth orbit, he notes, the significantly thinned atmosphere can exert drag on a spacecraft, slowing it and allowing Earth's gravity to tug it out of an intended orbit. The sun's activity can change the atmosphere's density with altitude, increasing or decreasing drag.In this case, the drag is acting on a very irregularly shaped craft, which makes its effect very hard to calculate, Horwood says.Working backward from the most recent observation of a derelict's position to reconstruct an orbit from past observations is no problem, he adds. But drag and other issues can throw curves into projections of where in the sky one can next expect to spot the object. We're not dealing with cannonballs here, he quips.Still, one potential benefit from Russia's woes is that the information gained from tracking Phobos-Grunt could help improve track-forecasting models, Horwood says.
Indeed, the international community is doing that now.The Inter-Agency Space Debris Coordination Committee, made up of representatives from 12 national space agencies, is using Phobos-Grunt's problems as an opportunity to figure out more-accurate ways of estimating the reentry time and place for incoming spacecraft. Then again, the estimates are only as good as the data that feed them. The best data come from the United States, Russia, and Europe. But while the US cooperates with space agencies in alerting them to possible hazards to their craft, it keeps the most accurate of its tracking information under wraps. Some data need to be held close to the vest for national-security reasons, acknowledges Brian Weeden, a former Air Force officer who was deeply involved in the US military's efforts to track objects in space. But we think there is a batter balance that can be struck in making more accurate information publicly available, says Mr. Weeden, currently the technical advisor to the Secure World Foundation, which advocates the sustainable use of near-Earth space.

8 After many days thou shalt be visited: in the latter years thou shalt come into the land that is brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people, against the mountains of Israel, which have been always waste: but it is brought forth out of the nations, and they shall dwell safely all of them.

Russia: Attack on Tehran is Attack on Moscow-Russia has given Iran its bear hug and warns Israel and the West that an attack on Tehran would be considered an attack on Moscow.By Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu First Publish: 1/15/2012, 12:28 PM

ITAR-TASS/Russian Federation
Russia has given Iran its bear hug and warns Israel and the West that an attack on Tehran would be considered an attack on Moscow. The threat heightens the prospect of World War III in the event of a military strike on Iran.Iran is our neighbor, Russia's outgoing ambassador to NATO, Dmitry Rogozin, told reporters in Brussels. And if Iran is involved in any military action, it’s a direct threat to our security.
Kremlin Security Council head Nikolai Patrushev accused Israel of provoking the United States towards war against Iran, the Russian Interfax news agency reported Friday. But at the same time, we believe that any country has the right to have what it needs to feel comfortable, including Iran,he added.Rogozin warned on Friday that more attacks on Iran could cause a scorching Arab Summer.Russia also has come to the defense of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, warning Western nations not to intervene in Syria with military forces. Russia is a major arms supplier to Syria and has a heavy investment in Iran’s nuclear facilities.Japan also is drifting towards Iran, backtracking from its promise last week to back American sanctions aimed at persuading Iran to halt its unsupervised nuclear development.

Last week’s assassination of an Iranian nuclear scientist has aroused more Death to America and Death to Israel protest rallies in Iran, where the scientist was buried on Friday.Iranian state radio said the 32-year-old scientist was involved with enriched uranium, a key ingredient for a nuclear weapon.

US Nervous, Sends Army General to Calm Down Israel-Obama sends army chief to Israel to convince it not to attack Iran and endanger 15,000 US personnel. Unshakeable support for Israel.By Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu First Publish: 1/15/2012, 8:35 AM

The Obama administration is sending the head of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Martin Dempsey to Israel this Thursday to try to change what it sees as Israel’s increasing readiness to attack Iran. Both Israel and the United States have stated they would not rule out a military strike on Tehran to prevent the Islamic Republic from reaching the capability of attacking Israel, or elsewhere, with a nuclear weapon. However, American officials are worried that Israel is closer to concluding that the point of no return is at hand, after which it may be too late to stop Iran.
With 15,000 soldiers, diplomats and contractors in Iraq, Iran’s neighbor, Washington is worried that an Israeli strike would place them in danger, The Wall Street Journal reported. Israel is concerned that Iranian nuclear capability would give it leverage to achieve its dream of dominating the Muslim world and wiping Israel off the map in the words of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.Dempsey will meet his counterpart in Israel, IDF Chief of Staff Benny Gantz, as well as Defense Minister Ehud Barak and possibly Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu. President Barack Obama telephoned the Prime Minister last Thursday and expressed his unshakeable commitment to Israel’s security, but the White House declined to describe the content of the conversation.

The head of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, on his first official visit to Israel, will try to convince Israel that new sanctions on Iran and the deployment of thousands of U.S. soldiers in Kuwait demonstrate its intention to deter Iran. The United States also has sent a second aircraft carrier to the Persian Gulf and underscored its vow to prevent Iran from holding the Western world hostage by closing the passage of oil tankers. The nervousness in Washington is aggravated by its officials not really knowing what are the intentions of Israel. It's hard to know what's bluster and what's not with the Israelis,a former U.S. official to the Journal. The Obama administration now is in a position of slapping harsher sanctions on Iran as a response to Israeli threats. The war of words between Israel and Iran escalated last week following the assassination of a top nuclear scientist in Iran, which accused the Zionist regime of carrying out the operation with approval of the United States.George Mitchell, whose efforts to advance the peace process between the Palestinian Authority and Israel were a total failure, has joined the American chorus of advising Israel that it would be unwise to attack Iran.Meanwhile, Iran claimed last week that an underground nuclear facility now is producing 20 percent enriched uranium, a key ingredient for a nuclear weapon.

Ban to Israel: End the Occupation-U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called on Israel Sunday to end its occupation of Judea, Samaria and (DIVIDE)Jerusalem.
By Chana Ya'ar First Publish: 1/15/2012, 4:15 PM (MY ADDED COMMENT)

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called on Israel Sunday to end its occupation of Judea, Samaria and Jerusalem.Wrapping up the final day of his three-day visit to Lebanon, Ban slammed Israel in remarks made during a keynote speech in Beirut at a conference entitled “Reform and Transitions to Democracy.” The conference was organized by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia. Among the speakers at the three-day event were former Arab League secretary-general and Egyptian presidential candidate Amr Moussa, and Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu.

The Israeli occupation of Arab and Palestinian territories must end. So must violence against civilians, the U.N. Secretary-general stated.Settlements, new and old, are illegal. They work against the emergence of a viable Palestinian state,he continued, according to the AFP news agency.A two-state solution is long overdue, Ban added. The status quo offers only the guarantee of future conflict.Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor responded to the harsh remarks by saying the ongoing talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority negotiators were the best way to deal with the concerns raised by the U.N. Chief. “The only thing I can say at this point is that the most important thing is to keep the talks going in view of solving all of the issues,Palmor said, including those mentioned by the secretary-general. The most important thing now is not to jeopardize the talks that are underway, in any way.Ban did not restrict his harsh remarks to Israel alone, however.

The U.N. chief called on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to end the nearly 11-month campaign of violence that has left more than 6,000 anti-government protesters dead. Stop the violence. Stop killing your people. The path of repression is a dead end, he urged, but offered no concrete plan to intervene in the carnage. The winds of change will not cease to blow,Ban warned instead. The flame ignited in Tunisia will not be dimmed.

POSSIBLY 73 DEAD IN CRUISE SHIP MISHAP

1/3RD OF SHIPS DESTROYED

REVELATION 8:8-9
8 And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood;
9 And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed.

Italy cruise ship Costa Concordia aground near Giglio-The Independent's travel editor Simon Calder: It is unbelievable ... that this should happen to a 21st Century ship JAN 14,12
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-16558910

Three people are confirmed dead after a cruise ship carrying more than 4,000 people ran aground off Italy. There were scenes of panic as the Costa Concordia hit a sandbar on Friday evening near the island of Giglio and listed about 20 degrees.
Most people reached land by lifeboats but some swam to shore. At least 50 people have not yet been accounted for, Italian officials say, but they caution that the passenger list may not be fully up to date.Coast guard vessels are combing the waters around the ship, while divers are searching the submerged decks. The regional prefect's office said 4,165 out of 4,234 people on board had been accounted for, the Italian news agency Ansa reported.Italian, German, French and British nationals were among the 3,200 passengers on board. There were also 1,000 crew.Three people were confirmed dead, Italian coast guard officials said on Saturday morning - fewer than the six or eight deaths reported by Italian media earlier. Fourteen people were injured.Costa Concordia with hole in its hull (14 January 2011) The Costa Concordia was carrying more than 3,200 passengers when it ran aground off the Italian coast
Mediterranean cruise

The Costa Concordia had sailed earlier on Friday from Civitavecchia port near Rome for a Mediterranean cruise, due to dock in Marseille after calling at ports in Sicily, Sardinia and Spain. One thousand passengers were Italian, with 500 Germans and 160 French. Some tens of British passengers are believed to have been on board, said the UK Foreign Office, which is sending a team to the scene. Some passengers told the Associated Press the crew had failed to give instructions on how to evacuate the ship. An evacuation drill was scheduled for Saturday afternoon. It was so unorganised, our evacuation drill was scheduled for 17:00 (16:00 GMT),Melissa Goduti, 28, from the US told AP. We had joked what if something had happened today.

Investigators will now look into every aspect of this accident, but one of the key elements they will examine will be the electrical systems.Modern ships tend to use electrical generators to drive the engines, so a power cut can leave the captain unable to steer away from danger.Human error could also be a factor, and there will also be concern at the speed which the ship listed on to its side. Not only would that have been frightening, it seems to have affected the crew's ability to launch some of the lifeboats. All ships have to meet safety standards set out by the International Maritime Organisation. Crews are trained to deal with emergency and cruise companies stress this kind of accident is rare.Passengers were eating dinner on Friday evening, when they heard a loud bang, and were told that the ship had suffered electrical problems, one passenger told Italy's Ansa news agency. We were having supper when the lights suddenly went out, we heard a boom and a groaning noise, and all the cutlery fell on the floor, said Luciano Castro.Passenger Mara Parmegiani told Italian media there were scenes of panic. We were very scared and freezing because it happened while we were at dinner so everyone was in evening wear. We definitely didn't have time to get anything else. They gave us blankets but there weren't enough, she said. The 290-metre (950 ft) vessel ran aground, starting taking in water and listing by 20 degrees, the local coast guard said.Orders were given to abandon ship, Deodato Ordona, a cabin steward on the Costa Concordia, told the BBC.We announced a general emergency and took passengers to muster stations, he said. But it is hard to launch the lifeboats, so they moved to the right side of the ship, and they could launch.Costa Concordia seen from land (14 January 2011) The cruise operators thanked the authorities and citizens of the island of Giglio for rescuing those on board the Costa Concordia

Elderly passengers were crying, said Mr Ordona, adding that he and some others jumped into the sea and swam roughly 400 metres to reach land.Helicopters evacuated the last 50 people trapped on the ship.Several passengers compared the accident to the film Titanic, about the sinking of the giant ocean liner in April 1912 which claimed more than 1,500 lives.I can easily understand the comparisons to the film, how it must have been on the Titanic, or in a fiction film, passenger Francesca Sinatra told the Reuters news agency. The scenes of panic create disaster. There were people scrambling over each other, elderly people wetting themselves.

Hypothermia

Rescued passengers were accommodated in hotels, schools and a church on Giglio, a resort island 25km (15 miles) off Italy's western coast. All those taken to Giglio have now been moved to the mainland, Elizabeth Nanni from the island's tourist information service told the BBC.Usually there are 700 people on the island at this time of year, so receiving 4,000 and some in the middle of the night wasn't easy, she said. Some people jumped in the sea so they had hypothermia.Coast guard official Francesco Paolillo, a local coast guard official, told the AFP news agency there was a 30m hole in the ship but that it was too early to say what exactly had happened.
We think this happened as a result of sailing too close to an obstacle like a reef, he said.Costa Cruises, the company which owns the ship, said it could not yet say what had caused the accident. The gradual listing of the ship made the evacuation extremely difficult,a statement said. The position of the ship, which is worsening, is making more difficult the last part of the evacuation. We'd like to express our deepest gratitude to the coastguard and other emergency services, including the authorities and citizens of the island of Giglio, who did their best in saving and helping the passengers and crew. Two years ago, a Costa Cruises ship crashed into a dock at the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm al-Sheikh, killing three members of the crew.

Captain arrested over sinking cruise ship UPDATED: Jan 14, 2012 19:14 GMT

The Italian captain of the cruise ship that ran aground -- killing three person and injuring 20 more -- was arrested late Saturday and is being investigated for manslaughter and abandoning ship, said a local prosecutor in Grosetto, Italy. The captain, Francesco Schettino, had been earlier interviewed by investigators in Porto Santo Stefano about what happened when the 4,200-passenger Costa Concordia struck rocks in shallow water off Italy's western coast, said officer Emilio Del Santo of the Coastal Authorities of Livorno. Authorities were looking at why the ship didn't hail a mayday during the accident near the Italian island of Giglio on Friday night, officials said. The ship is owned by Genoa-based Costa Cruises. At the moment we can't exclude that the ship had some kind of technical problem, and for this reason moved towards the coast in order to save the passengers, the crew and the ship. But they didn't send a mayday. The ship got in contact with us once the evacuation procedures were already ongoing,Del Santo said prior to the announcement of the arrest.Fear and panic are comprehensible in a ship long over 300 meters with over 4000 passengers,Del Santo said. We can confirm that the ship has a breach on the hull of about 90 meters, and that the right side of it is completely under water. The three persons dead were two French tourists and a crew member from Peru, Port authorities in Livorno said. Giuseppe Orsina, a spokesman with the local civil protection agency, said 43 to 51 persons were missing, though authorities are reviewing passenger lists to confirm the exact figure. These people could be still on the island of Giglio, in private houses or in hospitals,Orsina said. The coast guard said 50 to 70 people could be missing. One surviving crew member, Rosalyn Rincon, 30, of Blackpool, England, said she wanted to know why the cruise ship was sailing so close to shore. She described a harrowing grounding of the vessel, whose tilting and rising water evoked the film Titanic, she said.

Why Canadians should care about a euro collapse
By Mark Gollom, CBC News Posted: Dec 1, 2011 1:07 PM ET

ANALYSIS | Jeremy Kinsman: Can Europe be saved? Europe feels the economic pinch

The demise of the euro would deliver a significant blow to the Canadian economy, leading to less trade, higher unemployment and a possible recession, financial experts say.The situation in Europe would create a tsunami that would reach our shores very very quickly, Louis Gagnon, finance professor at Queen’s University School of Business in Kingston, Ont., told CBC News.We would be collateral damage and this collateral damage would be very, very significant. With some European countries seemingly unable to control their spiralling debt crises, and with uncertainty over the type of financial relief the European Central Bank may contribute, there are fears the end of the euro is near.On the business side, we want the Europeans to get out of this. We want them to do well.—Walid Hejazi, associate professor, Rotman School of Management

Gagnon explained that if the euro dissolved as a currency, a number of countries with their debt denominated in euros would immediately have to default since they would adapt their own domestic currencies and those would be devalued from anywhere between 50 to 70 per cent.As the marketplace establishes the exchange rates, Gagnon said, you would see a fire sale on the exchange rates because investors would have very little confidence in these new currencies. These countries would be forced to pay back debt holders in euros which they don't have. As well, financial institutions, all the banks have euro obligations,he said.

Banks' failure may affect the world

As some European governments would default, banks holding those bonds would not have money to lend, drying up liquidity, sparking a severe global economic contraction and causing a major economic crisis. It's one banking system, when we look at it. If it fails in Europe, the rest of the world would be affected,Gagnon said.

But what does that mean for the average Canadian?

This would cause panic, fear, remove all the confidence in the financial system, Gagnon said. The global financial system would become paralyzed … in this way Canadians would be affected.Canadians would stop spending, which could lead to a possible recession in Canada.Walid Hejazi, associate professor of international business at the University of Toronto's Rotman School of Management, said that being part of an integrated global economy means what happens elsewhere could affect us.
Much of our prosperity is driven by our linkages into the global economy and much of the risks are driven by our linkages to the global economy, so you have to deal with both.Hejazi said employment numbers, income growth, value of our assets, our homes and the assets of financial markets would all be put at risk.So it can actually impact the average Canadian quite significantly. So we do have to worry. It's not something the average Canadian can say, It's over there in Europe, who cares?

When they do well, we do well

Hejazi said he worked with the Department of Foreign Affairs on the first study on deepening the economic relationship between Canada and EU in 2008.There was tremendous goodwill about the benefits that come between Canada and the EU,he said. I found that people really wanted to deepen the relationship because of the economic opportunity, but also because of the history. On the business side, we want the Europeans to get out of this. We want them to do well. One thing that's really clear is when they do well, we do well. When they're worse off, we're worse off.Matthias Kipping, professor of policy and chair in business history at Schulich School of Business, said the euro collapse would mean countries would become more protectionist, which would have a major effect on a country like Canada that relies on exports. While Canada’s direct share of global trade with Europe is relatively small, it would be indirectly affected by those countries, in particular the United States, which are heavily exposed to the European market and which Canada trades with. But Kipping said the crisis would take a little while for it to work its way through Canada.People won't get fired immediately tomorrow, but it will work its way through. The doomsday scenario, he said, is the credit flows stop, meaning economic activity and trade stop or get severely curtailed. The next thing is if trade stops, who are you going to sell to? People who make things, they eventually have nothing to do, and they'll be out of a job. It may not happen next week, but could happen next year. While Canadian banks don't have much direct exposure to Europe, they would be affected by the calamity raging in the credit marketplace, Gagnon said, meaning they would have to stop lending to other banks. But Gagnon said Canada, with its relatively healthier banks and deficit containment, is in a better position than other countries to deal with the crisis.Things aren’t looking all that great, but I think we would weather the storm to a better degree than our trading partners and especially Europe.

S&P downgrades 9 eurozone countries Greek debt talks on hold CBC News Posted: Jan 13, 2012 11:08 AM ET

Bond rating agency Standard & Poor's downgraded nine eurozone countries Friday.S&P cut France and Austria’s top, triple-A ratings by one notch to AA+.It left Germany, the Netherlands and Finland's triple-A ratings untouched. Also unchanged were Luxembourg at AAA, Belgium at AA, Estonia at AA- and Ireland at BBB+.That leaves Germany as the only top-rated backer of Europe’s bailout fund for troubled economies.
Downgraded:

• France • Austria • Italy • Spain • Portugal • Cyprus • Malta • Slovenia • Slovakia
Not cut:

• Germany • The Netherlands • Belgium • Luxembourg • Finland • Ireland • Estonia

S&P also cut Italy and Spain by two levels. Italy fell to BBB+ from A and Spain fell from AA- to A. Portugal and Cyprus also dropped two notches. The agency also cut ratings on Malta, Slovakia and Slovenia. In our view,it said on its website, the policy initiatives taken by European policymakers in recent weeks may be insufficient to fully address ongoing systemic stresses in the eurozone. The announcements came after North American markets closed, but reports of the pending downgrades during the day helped send shares lower.France’s finance minister, Francois Baroin, went on television to confirm his country’s downgrade before markets in Canada and the U.S. finished trading for the day, saying the cut was bad news but not a catastrophe. You have to be relative, you have keep your cool, he said.
It's necessary not to frighten the French people about it.Also weighing on shares was the announcement that crucial negotiations between the Greek government and its private creditors on a deal needed to avoid default had been paused for reflection, which raised concerns the negotiations were close to collapse.A downgrade would most likely increase the costs of borrowing.

Negotiations paused for reflection

Earlier, representatives of private bondholders said crucial negotiations between the Greek government and its private creditors on a deal needed to avoid default had been paused for reflection, which raised concerns the negotiations were close to collapse. The talks are aimed at renegotiating the face value of bonds Greece has issued in order to reach an agreement on how much of a haircut the banks will take voluntarily.By making the deal voluntary, Greece would dodge a legal default, which risks triggering a much deeper financial crisis that could curtail European lending.
If Greece's default is disorderly — with the various lenders uncertain of how much they will be repaid — the risk is that banks will become unwilling to lend because they can no longer count on enforcement of the rules that protect lenders when borrowers fail to meet the terms of their loans.More immediately, the bond swap aims to reduce Greece's debt by €100 billion ($130 billion) and is a key part of a second, €130 billion ($169 billion) international bailout installment. The S&P/TSX composite index closed down 43.26 points, or 0.4 per cent, at 12,231.06. It fell by as much as 157 points during the session. The Canadian dollar closed down 0.42 of a cent at 97.78 cents US.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average ended down 48.96 points, or 0.4 per cent, at 12,422.06, the Nasdaq composite index fell 14.03, or 0.5 per cent to 2,710.67 and the S&P 500 index ended with a loss of 6.41 points, or 0.5 per cent, at 1,289.09.The euro fell to a 17-month low, and was trading down 1.2 per cent at $1.2666 US late in the afternoon..European markets closed lower, with London's FTSE 100 off 0.46 per cent, Frankfurt's DAX down 0.58 per cent and the Paris CAC 40 closing off 0.11 per cent.Traders had earlier been relieved at successful government bond auctions in Italy and Spain, which had raised hopes that policy-makers may finally be getting a grip on Europe's debt crisis after months of procrastination and indecision.Greek Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos leaves the office of Prime Minister Lucas Papademos, left, after their meeting with negotiators for private bondholders in Athens. Markets traded lower after the talks were paused Friday.Greek Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos leaves the office of Prime Minister Lucas Papademos, left, after their meeting with negotiators for private bondholders in Athens. Markets traded lower after the talks were paused Friday. (Petros Giannakouris/Associated Press)On Friday, Italy had seen its borrowing costs drop for a second day in a row as it easily raised €3 billion. It's really mixed news on Europe today; the downgrade is definitely negative, said Jeff Bradacs, portfolio manager at Manulife Asset Management. But borrowing by Italy came in at lower rates than expected and that's partially driven by European banks getting low funding costs through the ECB and buying the Italian bonds. On Dec. 5, S&P warned it might make the downgrades, citing a growing reluctance of banks to lend, rising bond yields, continuing disagreements among European leaders on how the resolve the region’s debt crisis, high government and household debt and the rising risk of recession.A weak U.S. trade report added to traders' concerns.American exports dropped 0.9 per cent in November from the previous month. Fewer shipments of autos and capital goods, such as aircraft and machinery, were the key reason. A decline in exports weakens U.S. growth and exports could drop even further in the months to come.
