ONLY GODLESS SHOULD HOLD OFFICE-GOOD LUCK

ROMANS 3:13-18
13 Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips:
14 Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness:
15 Their feet are swift to shed blood:
16 Destruction and misery are in their ways:
17 And the way of peace have they not known:
18 There is no fear of God before their eyes.

2 TIMOTHY 4:3-4
3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

DECIEVERS WAXING WORSE AND WORSE.

2 TIMOTHY 3:13
13 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.

PROVERBS 2:12-15,20-22
12 To deliver thee from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaketh froward things;
13 Who leave the paths of uprightness, to walk in the ways of darkness;
14 Who rejoice to do evil, and delight in the frowardness of the wicked;
15 Whose ways are crooked, and they froward in their paths:
20 That thou mayest walk in the way of good men, and keep the paths of the righteous.
21 For the upright shall dwell in the land, and the perfect shall remain in it.
22 But the wicked shall be cut off from the earth, and the transgressors shall be rooted out of it.

THIS IS EXACTLY WHY THE EARTH IS BEING JUDGED FOR IT SINS.ITS BECAUSE THERES GODLESS LEADERS IN OFFICE AROUND THE WORLD.AND NOT GOD LOVING,OBEYING LEADERS.

Only Atheists Should Hold Public Office By Andrew Riggio | Yahoo! Contributor Network – Sat, Jan 21, 2012

COMMENTARY | Religion plays a big role in politics. Noted polling organization Pew Research just published a report detailing which candidate people are likely to vote for based on religion. A USA Today report suggests Rick Santorum's popularity in South Carolina has been significantly increased by his religious positions on issues and support of the evangelical Christian movement. That's all a shame because America would be better off if only atheists were allowed to hold public office.

Let me start by saying such an arrangement would actually protect Christians. Leaders who are influenced by religious belief often act in ways that support that religion -- sometimes to the detriment of other faiths. While Christianity may hold sway now in the U.S. other religions might someday enjoy a political majority. If that day comes Christians who have advocated for religious leadership will have no defense against the wishes of officeholders from other religions.Of greater importance, however, is the danger of religious leadership. Theocratic nations restrict freedom and place adherence to religious dogma ahead of real-world issues and common sense. A horrifying example is the practice under Sharia law of punishing rape victims with death for sexual immorality. This even happens in nations where Sharia is not officially used, such as Bangladesh, where a 14-year-old girl was raped by a relative and killed by punitive whipping, according to UPI.Christian dogma is equally violent. The Bible calls for death as punishment for talking back to parents, breaking the Sabbath, wearing clothes of multiple fabrics, and failing to scream loudly enough when being raped, among many other offenses listed by the Skeptics Annotated Bible. If Christian religious dogma is taken seriously by leaders it could lead to terror and death.

Adherence to religious dogma also distracts from pressing, real-world issues. The Bible calls poverty a holy thing. Mother Teresa called abortion the greatest destroyer of peace today in her Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech according to the Nobel site. Religious dogma makes adherents want to limit others' rights, dictate social ethics, yet ignore problems like poverty.Atheist leadership would be focused entirely on the actual civic problems facing the country. It may be the only world view that places real world problems first and America needs that.

Iran Vows to Shut Down Strait of Hormuz as EU Passes Oil Embargo Kurt Nimmo Infowars.com January 23, 2012

Iran has reacted angrily to an agreement by European Union foreign ministers to impose an oil embargo on the country.Following the agreement reached on Monday, Iranian lawmaker Mohammad Ismail Kowsari, deputy head of Iran’s influential committee on national security, said the strait would definitely be closed if the sale of Iranian oil is violated in any way.A fifth of the world’s oil moves through the Strait of Hormuz.Tehran will not grin and bear it when its interests are undermined, said lawmaker Alaeddin Boroujerdi, according to Press TV. Boroujerdi is a lawmaker who heads the national security and foreign policy committee in Tehran.

Another lawmaker, Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh, said Iran has a right to shut down Hormuz. Falahatpisheh is a senior member of Iran’s Majlis, or Iranian parliament.Ali Falahaian, a former intelligence minister, said Iran should stop all its crude exports so that oil prices would go up and the Europeans’ sanctions would collapse.
Iran first issued warnings about closing down the Strait of Hormuz in December. If they impose sanctions on Iran’s oil exports, then even one drop of oil cannot flow from the Strait of Hormuz, said Vice President Mohamed Reza Rahimi.Admiral Habibollah Sayyari told Iran’s state-run Press TV that closing down the strait would be very easy for Iranian naval forces, but said such a decision should be made by top establishment leaders. It now appears Iran’s leaders are a step closer to considering that option as the EU and the United States impose an embargo and punitive sanctions.
The price of oil surpassed $99 per barrel on news of the embargo and Iran’s response.
Benchmark crude for March delivery moved up about a dollar to trade 90 cents higher at $99.23 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange, according to the Associated Press.

JAMES 5:1-3
1 Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you.
2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten.
3 Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.

REVELATION 18:10,17,19
10 Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.
17 For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off,
19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate.

EZEKIEL 7:19
19 They shall cast their silver in the streets, and their gold shall be removed: their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD: they shall not satisfy their souls, neither fill their bowels: because it is the stumblingblock of their iniquity.

Franco-German growth plan looks to EU funds and taxes
20.01.12 @ 18:14 By Valentina Pop

BRUSSELS - A six-point plan drafted by France and Germany has suggested corporate tax co-ordination, an EU financial transactions tax and the re-deployment of EU funds in troubled countries as ways to spur growth and jobs.Following Standard & Poor's recent downgrade of nine euro-countries, including France, in which the ratings agency warned that austerity and budget cuts are not the way out of recession, Paris and Berlin have teamed up once more and drafted a six-page paper called Ways out of the crisis - strengthen growth now! The paper - seen by EUobserver - is supposed to be discussed at the EU summits on 30 January and 1-2 March, the latter being a meeting especially dedicated to growth and jobs. The financial transactions tax - a pet project of French President Nicolas Sarkozy ahead of his re-election bid in April - features among the six proposals under efforts to reinforce the framework of financial market. On Monday, hours before meeting their colleagues from the other 25 member states in Brussels, the German and French finance ministers will gather in Paris to thrash out a common position on the so-called Tobin tax, named after the Nobel prize laureate James Tobin who initially conceived it.Britain, Sweden, Denmark, Malta and the Czech Republic oppose the tax, saying it is counter-productive in the absence of a global deal which would stop firms from fleeing to tax havens in Switzerland or the Caribbean.Even more controversial are plans for tax co-ordination and another Franco-German proposal to be put forward by end of February on the convergence of their corporate tax.European institutions and member states should accelerate the process of tax coordination in order to foster growth, removing obstacles to the functioning of the single market and preventing tax abuse and harmful tax practices, the paper says.Apart from the Tobin tax, both leaders want to speed up EU legislation on an energy tax and a common consolidated corporate tax base.

The latter would introduce a common European formula for calculating a tax on the profits of multinational firms, a taboo topic for Ireland, for instance, where corporate tax is only 12.5 percent.Another controversial proposal would have 25 percent of unspent EU regional funds in countries under a bail-out program or under serious economic difficulties redirected to a special fund for growth and competitiveness. The money would no longer be managed by the national authorities, but by the EU commission in liaison with the European Investment Bank.Projects financed by this fund should have clear targets that can be implemented in 2012, for instance loans to small and medium enterprises or research institutes. The two leaders also want existing national programs under which people and companies can apply for EU funding to be revised in order to improve their impact on growth and competitiveness.Late payments to the beneficiaries of EU funding should also be reduced by lowering the ceiling to one month, the paper suggests. As for employment-boosting measures, one of Sarkozy's make-or-break campaign themes, the document asks governments to instruct employment agencies to make an offer to every unemployed person - be it for a job, an apprenticeship or further training. The EU commission is invited to make a comparative study to how short-term jobs and trainings are being used in member states during economic slumps. Labour taxes should be lowered throughout Europe, cross-border employment spurred. And a social forum should be held in the first half of this year.

THE FIRST JUDGEMENT OF THE EARTH STARTED WITH WATER-IT ONLY MAKES SENSE THE LAST GENERATION WILL BE HAVING FLOODING
GENESIS 7:6-12
6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.
8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,
9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.
10 And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.
GOD PROMISED BY A RAINBOW-THE EARTH WOULD NEVER BE DESTROYED TOTALLY WITH A FLOOD AGAIN.BUT FLOODIING IS A SIGN OF JUDGEMENT.

Tornadoes possible in southern U.S. as snow threatens
ReutersReuters – JAN 22,12

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Severe storms were expected to spread across several southeastern U.S. states on Sunday into Monday with tornadoes, highwinds and large hail possible, weather forecasters said.A second stormfront expected to hit California late Sunday night will bring significant snowfall to the mountain regions, according to the National Weather Service, before rolling into the southern United States later in the week. The potential for severe storms stretched from the Gulf of Mexico in Mississippi to southern Indiana and Ohio, according to AccuWeather.com meteorologist Bill Deger. Some of the thunderstorms are even expected to spawn tornadoes, making for an especially dangerous situation given the veil of night, Deger said.In Alabama, residents were bracing for storms that could hit after dark on Sunday or overnight with a strong cold front from the west combining with warm moist air flowing up from the Gulf of Mexico, said Mary Keiser, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Birmingham, Alabama. The best dynamics for this are going to be across the northwest part of the state and lesser so as you move to the southeast part of the state,Keiser said of the forecast for severe weather to strike in Alabama.

The weather service said thunderstorms could bring wind gusts up to 80 mph, tornadoes or gulf ball-sized hail in Mississippi. Farther west, the weather service warned of a high fire danger in Texas with wind gusts of up to 50 mph.Weather.com said the greatest tornado threat appeared to be in eastern Arkansas, western Tennessee, northern Louisiana and northern Mississippi.Parts of central and southern California were under a winter weather warning as a storm system was expected to sweep into the area late Sunday into Monday morning, with the weather service predicting 6 to 12 inches of snow. The Sierras and the Rockies may accumulate as much as 3 feet of snow, the weather service said, and driving in mountain passes will be very hazardous due to low visibility, gusting winds and heavy snowfall. In Reno, Nevada, meanwhile, snowfall provided welcome relief to firefighters who were monitoring remaining hotspots from a blaze that raged near the outskirts of the city beginning Thursday, destroying 30 houses and prompting thousands of people to flee their homes. As long as we keep on getting snow instead of rain, it looks like we'll be okay, at least for the next couple of days, said Mark Regan, spokesman for the Sierra Fire Protection District.Rain had threatened the area with flash flooding on Friday night. Emergency responders had the blaze 100 percent contained as of Saturday, and all residents have been allowed to return to their homes, Regan said.

In the upper Midwest, freezing drizzle was expected to make roads and sidewalks slippery from southeastern Minnesota into Wisconsin, changing to snow later Sunday, the weather service said. Up to 4 inches of snow was expected farther north in southeast North Dakota and west central Minnesota. In the northeast United States, a fast-moving storm from central Pennsylvania eastward dropped up to a foot of snow in parts of Rhode Island and Massachusetts on Saturday.(Reporting By David Bailey and Mary Slosson; Editing by Tim Gaynor)

3 And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech(MOSCOW) and Tubal:
4 And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws,(GOD FORCES THE RUSSIA-MUSLIMS TO MARCH) and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords:

U.S. aircraft carrier enters Gulf without incident
ReutersBy David Alexander | Reuters – JAN 22,12

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. aircraft carrier sailed through the Strait of Hormuz and into the Gulf without incident on Sunday, a day after Iran backed away from an earlier threat to take action if an American carrier returned to the strategic waterway. The carrier USS Abraham Lincoln completed a regular and routine passage through the strait, a critical gateway for the region's oil exports, as previously scheduled and without incident, said Lieutenant Rebecca Rebarich, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Fifth Fleet. The Lincoln, accompanied by strike group of warships, was the first U.S. aircraft carrier to enter the Gulf since late December and was on a routine rotation to replace the outgoing USS John C. Stennis. The departure of the Stennis prompted Iranian army chief Ataollah Salehi to threaten action if the carrier passed back into the Gulf.I recommend and emphasize to the American carrier not to return to the Persian Gulf. ... We are not in the habit of warning more than once, he said. The threat led to a round of escalating rhetoric between the two sides that spooked oil markets and raised the specter of a military confrontation between Iran and the United States.Iran threatened to close the strait, the world's most important oil shipping gateway, while the United States warned such a move would require a response by Washington, which routinely patrols international sea lanes to ensure they remain open.

Iran appeared to ease away from its earlier warnings on Saturday, with Revolutionary Guard Corps Deputy Commander Hossein Salami telling the official IRNA news agency that the return of U.S. warships to the Gulf was routine and not an increase in its permanent presence in the region.U.S. warships and military forces have been in the Persian Gulf and the Middle East region for many years and their decision in relation to the dispatch of a new warship is not a new issue and it should be interpreted as part of their permanent presence, Salami said.Pentagon officials declined to comment directly on Salami's remarks, but reiterated that continued U.S. presence in the region reflected the seriousness with which Washington takes its security commitments to partner nations in the region and to ensuring free flow of international commerce. The Lincoln's arrival in the Gulf was unrelated to Iran's statement on Saturday.Tensions between Iran and the United States have been escalating in recent weeks as President Barack Obama prepares to implement new U.S. sanctions against Iran over its nuclear enrichment program, which Tehran says is for energy production but the West believes is aimed at producing atomic weapons. The EU is preparing to intensify sanctions against Tehran with an embargo on Iran's oil exports and possibly freezing the assets of Iran's central bank. Obama is preparing new U.S. sanctions that target foreign financial institutions that do business with Iran's central bank.

Both sides tried to scale down the rhetoric last week. The White House emphasized the United States was still open to international talks on Iran's nuclear program, even as it denied Iranian assertions that discussions were under way about resuming a dialogue. The White House would not confirm or deny Iranian reports that Obama had sent a letter to Iranian leaders, but spokesman Jay Carney said any communications with Tehran would have reinforced the statements Washington has made publicly. The United States supports talks between Iran and the so-called P5 + 1, the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council - Russia, China, France, England and the United States - plus Germany.Carney urged Iran to respond to the letter sent in October on behalf of the P5 +1 by European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton. If the Iranians are serious about restarting talks, then they need to respond to that letter,Carney told a White House briefing. That is the channel by which ... the restarting of those talks would take place.(Reporting By David Alexander; Editing by Peter Cooney and Stacey Joyce)

Israeli leader condemns Palestinian Muslim cleric
Associated PressBy DIAA HADID | Associated Press – JAN 22,12

JERUSALEM (AP) — The Palestinians' top Muslim cleric faced sharp Israeli criticism Sunday for a speech in which he quoted a religious text that includes passages about killing Jews in an end-of-days struggle.Mufti Mohammed Hussein's comments came at a political gathering of supporters of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. He said his remarks were taken out of context and that he didn't incite people to kill Jews. But by speaking at the venue, Hussein appeared to be linking the battle to the conflict with Israel. The hour of resurrection will not come until you fight the Jews,Hussein told the gathering, citing a hadith, or saying attributed to the Prophet Muhammad. The Jews will hide behind stones and trees. But the trees and the stones will call: oh Muslim, oh servant of God, there is a Jew hiding behind me so come and kill him.In a separate development, Israel's prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, said he hoped to reach a compromise with settlers that would stave off a looming deadline to evacuate the largest unauthorized settlement outpost in the West Bank. The Supreme Court, ruling that Migron was built on private Palestinian land, has ordered the outpost to be uprooted by March 31. With residents vowing to defy the evacuation, Netanyahu suggested they be moved to nearby land that is not privately owned. An Israeli official said the proposal, which would need Supreme Court approval, aims to avert a violent standoff with the settlers. But Peace Now, an anti-settlement watchdog group, said the proposal was merely a stalling tactic.

A spokesman for the residents, Itai Chemo, rejected the proposal. Relocation is not an answer to these attacks,he said. Instead, he called for a brave dialogue with the government to find a proper solution. The Israeli official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was discussing internal government plans, said the settlement would be uprooted by March 31 if the residents do not agree to move. The mufti delivered his three-minute speech on Jan. 7 in an Arab neighborhood of east Jerusalem during celebrations of the 47th anniversary of the Palestinian movement Fatah, said Itamar Marcus of Palestine Media Watch, an Israeli watchdog group that tracks incitement.Marcus' group posted excerpts of the speech on YouTube last week. The comments drew angry reactions from Israelis on Sunday. We're talking about a heinous offense that all nations of the world must condemn,Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement sent to reporters by text message. He asked the Israeli attorney general to launch an investigation. It is unclear what authority Israel would have since Hussein is appointed to his position by the Palestinian president. There was no immediate comment from Abbas' office.Hussein, who is based in Jerusalem, said his comments were taken out of context.I was speaking about the final signs of the day of resurrection, Hussein said.I did not incite, and I did not call for killing. We are not, at present, at the end of days. The Quran, Islam's holy book, offers contradictory attitudes toward Jews and Christians. There are texts that enshrine tolerance and respect for other faiths, while others are spiked with hatred and incitement. Some extremist rabbis also have found passages in Jewish texts that they believe justifies violence against the Palestinians.

Tensions between Israelis and the Palestinians have been fueled by a three-year breakdown in peace efforts. Talks broke down in late 2008 and have remained frozen over the issue of Israeli settlement construction in the West Bank and east Jerusalem, areas captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war and claimed by the Palestinians for a future state. The Palestinians say there is no point in negotiating as long as Israel continues to build homes for its citizens on occupied land. Israel says the future of settlements is a matter for negotiations. Some 500,000 Israeli settlers now live in the West Bank and east Jerusalem, and some communities deep in the West Bank are considered especially hard line.Israeli and Palestinian negotiators resumed low-level contacts early this month with the aim of finding a formula for restarting formal negotiations. The Palestinians continue to insist that Israel freeze all settlement construction. Sunday's proposal to delay the evacuation of Migron is likely to harden Palestinian skepticism toward Netanyahu.

HRW calls on West to accept Islamist rise to power

CAIRO (AP) — The United States and other Western governments must accept the new reality that Islamists have emerged to fill the power vacuum in the Arab world after a wave of popular uprisings, Human Rights Watch said in its annual report Sunday. The New York-based group also urged Islamist parties, which have emerged as the biggest winners in recent elections in Tunisia and Egypt and are expected to fare well in Libya, to respect the rights of women and religious minorities, saying they cannot pick and choose when it comes to human rights.Islamist parties are genuinely popular in the Arab world, said HRW's executive director, Kenneth Roth, warning that ignoring that popularity would violate democratic principles.Being a political Islamic government should not be a reason to turn a government into a pariah, Roth told reporters in Cairo, where the group released its annual report. The Arab Spring revolts began in Tunisia in late 2010 and quickly spread to Egypt, Libya, Yemen, Syria and Bahrain, deposing or challenging authoritarian rulers as citizens who long seemed incapable or unwilling to rise against decades of repression took to the streets in a stunning awakening.Since the collapse of the regimes in Egypt and Tunisia a year ago, Islamist groups once largely confined to the political sidelines, such as the Muslim Brotherhood, have formed parties and contested parliamentary polls, winning the greatest share of seats.

Even the ultraconservative Salafis, who abstained from politics under Egypt's ousted President Hosni Mubarak, have fared well, winning more than 20 percent of the vote in the country's first post-uprising ballot.Roth was cautious when asked about concerns about potential human rights violations under Islamist rule. He said that so far, Islamists have said a lot of right things, but said the true test will be how they deal with the full sweep of human rights once in power. These are the big questions,he said. The Muslim Brotherhood, for example, has been most interested in political freedoms, but Roth noted that it is very difficult to secure political freedom if you are not respecting religious and women rights. In some ways, the unexpected Arab uprisings have amounted to a slap to the United States and other Western governments, which had supported autocratic regimes that served as bulwarks against Islamists hostile to the West and appeared to offer stability in a volatile region. The West backed an array of autocrats as long as they, in turn, supported Western interests,Roth said. The West is still adjusting to this historic transformation. He added that the wave of uprisings show that the forced silence of people living under autocrats should never have been mistaken for popular complacency.

Roth acknowledged Western governments were re-evaluating their policies as new governments emerge in the region.Western nations have been accused of being selective in supporting the protesters, with NATO airstrikes proving key to the ouster of slain Libyan strongman Moammar Gadhafi. Meanwhile, the West has stood largely on the sidelines amid continued crackdowns in Bahrain, Yemen and Syria. The people driving the Arab Spring deserve strong international support to realize their rights and to build genuine democracies, Roth said in the group's annual report, which covers some 90 countries. He added that the Arab world is in a transformative moment, and it will not be an easy one.Human Rights Watch pointed to five main issues that dominated the relationship between Western governments and their Arab autocratic friends: the threat of political Islam, the fight against terrorism, support for Israel, protection of the oil flow and cooperation in stemming immigration.Even after the leaders of Egypt, Libya and Tunisia were toppled, Western governments remained hesitant to lean too hard on other shaky authoritarian leaders, the group said. China and Russia acted obstructionist, using their veto power at the U.N. security council to halt pressure on Syria to stop killings of protesters. The popular uprisings also have alarmed other repressive regimes such as China, Zimbabwe, North Korea, Ethiopia, Vietnam, and Uzbekistan, where rulers were worried about facing similar fates. The worst response to the Arab Spring is the dictatorial world who are living in fear of the precedents set in this region,Roth said. China greatly deepened its repression in an effort to avoid jasmine rallies.Saudi Arabia also continues to discriminate against its citizens and workers, according to HRW, which said 9 million women, 8 million foreign workers and 2 million Shiite citizens are either suppressed or lacking rights in the country.

The report called on Morocco to change repressive laws, end police violence and reform its judiciary. The chapter on Morocco focused on police harassment of pro-democracy demonstrators, lack of judicial independence and repression of separatist tendencies in the Western Sahara — a disputed territory held by the North African kingdom.Outside the Arab world, the last year did not witness significant progress in countries with poor human rights records, including China and North Korea, according to the report.Corruption, poverty and repression still prevail in Equatorial Guinea, the tiny, oil-rich nation off the western coast of Africa, which has been ruled by Africa's longest-serving ruler, Teodoro Obiang Nguema, the group said.Eritrea continues to be governed by one of the world's most repressive governments, and its citizens are subjected to torture, detentions and restrictions on freedom of speech, HRW said.It also cited Colombia, saying armed conflict in the South American country has displaced millions while paramilitary groups with ties to the security apparatus are on the rise.Cuba, HRW said, remains the only country in Latin America that represses virtually all forms of political dissent. The group also claimed that even member states of the European Union have violated human rights through restrictive asylum and migration policies.Additional reporting by Paul Schemm in Rabat, Morocco.

Syria rejects Arab League call for power change
AFPAFP – JAN 22,12

Syria on Monday rejected an Arab League plan for President Bashar al-Assad to transfer power to his deputy, calling the initiative a flagrant interference, state TV quoted an official as saying.Syria rejects the decisions taken which are outside an Arab working plan, and considers them an attack on its national sovereignty and a flagrant interference in internal affairs, the official was quoted as saying. The Arab League on Sunday asked the UN to support a new plan for resolving the crisis in Syria that sees Assad transferring power to his deputy and a government of national unity within two months.Assad should delegate powers to the vice president to liaise with a government of national unity,to be formed in two months, according to a statement read by Qatari premier Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim Al-Thani after Arab foreign ministers met in Cairo to determine the fate of their Syrian observer mission. The Syrian official reacting to the Arab League's call said the regional body should instead assume its responsibilities for stopping the financing and arming of terrorists, the television channel reported. The source added that the Arab League initiative ran counter to the interests of the Syrian people and would not prevent the country from advancing its political reforms and bringing security and stability to its people who have shown, during this crisis, their support for national unity as they have rallied around President Assad.Deployed since December 26 to oversee an Arab League peace plan, the mission has been widely criticised for its failure to stem the government's bloody crackdown on democracy protesters.

Earlier, Saudi Arabia's foreign minister said Riyadh had pulled its observers from the mission because the Syrian government had not respected any of the clauses in the Arab plan aimed at ending the crisis. The Arab League agreed, however, to extend the mission and boost the number of observers, according to the final statement. We will inform the United Nations of all the resolutions of the Arab League... for its approval,Sheikh Hamad said. The League's secretary general Nabil al-Arabi, who attended Sunday evening's news conference, explained that the request to support the United Nations was designed to give more weight to the Arab initiative. The Arab foreign ministers urged the Syrian government and all the opposition factions to engage in a serious dialogue under the auspices of the Arab League, within a period of not more than two weeks, to be able to achieve the formation of a unity government bringing together those in power and the opposition. The new government's mission would be to implement the Arab League plan to end the crisis, and to prepare free and fair legislative and presidential elections under both Arab and international supervision. It would also prepare the election of a constituent assembly within three months and a new constitution which would be put to a referendum. The ministers tasked the bloc's secretary general with nominating a special envoy to Syria in charge of following developments in the country. After reading out the statement, the Qatari premier said the new plan envisaged the peaceful departure of the Syrian regime. The new Arab initiative adopted by the foreign ministers envisages the peaceful departure of the Syrian regime,he said, adding that the plan resembles the one on Yemen, which resulted in President Ali Abdullah Saleh agreeing to step down.If this initiative is not put in place (by Damascus), we will go to the Security Council, where the decisions will be taken, Sheikh Hamad warned.

The Syrian National Council, the country's largest opposition group, has been lobbying in Cairo for UN intervention, and SNC chief Burhan Ghaliun welcomed the League's statement of its intention to seek UN support. But he insisted that any transition in Syria should be preceded with the announcement of Assad's departure.
Earlier, the SNC called for the Syria file to be transferred to the UN Security Council for referral to the International Criminal Court, so that all Syrian officials implicated in crimes against humanity could be prosecuted under international law.International pressure has been steadily growing on Assad's regime, with more than 5,400 people killed since anti-government protests broke out last March, according to UN figures. But a tough Security Council resolution on Syria has been blocked by veto-wielding permanent members China and Russia, with Moscow insisting the opposition is as much to blame for the violence as the regime.A report delivered earlier on Sunday by the chief of the Arab League's monitoring mission, General Mohammed Ahmed Mustafa al-Dabi of Sudan, also blamed both sides for the bloodshed, according to an Arab diplomatic source. The Arab League deployed observers in Syria on December 26, and there are presently about 165 monitors on the ground.

The Local Coordination Committees, which organises anti-regime protests, said in a statement on Sunday that 976 people have been killed in a bloody crackdown on dissent since the observer mission began.Qatar had proposed that Arab troops be deployed in Syria, but Damascus rejected that idea outright.

I CAN CLEARLY SEE THE PARALLEL IN THE DEATH OF JESUS TO ISRAEL HARDSHIPS WITH THE ARAB-MUSLIMS.THE NWO OF JESUS DAY WERE ALWAYS TRYING TO TRIP HIM UP IN HIS WORDS SO THEY COULD ACCUSE AND KILL HIM.THE ARABS SHOOT 10,000 ROCKETS INTO ISRAELI WOMEN AND CHILDREN AND MEN AND ISRAEL GETS CALLED MURDERERS FOR DEFENDING THEMSELVES AND SHOOTING BACK.AND ISRAEL IS HATED FOR BUILDING HOMES ON THEIR GOD GIVIN LAND.AND ACCUSED OF BEING OCUPIERS OF THEIR OWN LAND.THE ARAB-MUSLIMS CALL FOR KILLING INNOCENT ISRAELIS SO THEY CAN STEAL JERUSALEM AS THEIR OWN WITHOUT ANY JEWS AROUND TO WORRY ABOUT.JESUS THE INNOCENT JEWISH MESSIAH WAS ACCUSED OF BLASPHEMING FOR SAYING IN 3 DAYS I WILL BUILD THIS TEMPLE,WHEN IT TOOK 40 YEARS TO BUILD.THE NWO OF JESUS' DAY TEAMED UP WITH JUDAS TO HAVE THE INNOCENT JEWISH MESSIAH MURDERERED.AND THE ISLAMISTS OF TODAY ARE TEAMED UP WITH THE NWO TO HAVE ISRAEL DESTROYED FOREVER.CAN YOU SEE THE PARALLEL IN JESUS'S DEATH AND ISRAEL TODAY,I SURE CAN.

As region changes, Hamas movement shifts
AFPBy Selim Saheb Ettaba | AFP – JAN 22,12

Buffeted by the winds of the Arab Spring, the Hamas movement is transforming, with power shifting from its exiled leadership towards its government on the ground in Gaza, analysts say.Recent months have seen the group forced to deal with the new regional realities created by the Arab uprisings, including the increasingly precarious situation in Damascus, where its leadership-in-exile is based. The group has also moved towards reconciliation with its longtime rival Fatah, and its chief Khaled Meshaal has talked about the need to focus on peaceful protest. But the shifts have created a new tension within the Islamist group, with the Gaza leadership appearing increasingly emboldened to voice differences of opinion with Meshaal and the leadership-in-exile.On Saturday, Hamas announced that Meshaal did not plan to stand for reelection to the head of the movement, a decision that comes as the group experiences a fundamental reshaping, according to Omar Shaban, director of the Gaza-based Palthink think-tank.Hamas is going through a transformational process, he told AFP, attributing the movement's reshaping to both internal and external factors.

On the internal front, according to Shaban, some within the movement's Gaza-based leadership believe Hamas has suffered as a result of being charged with improving the lives of 1.3 million people in Gaza.Externally, Shaban says, Hamas is caught between the differing fates of the Muslim Brotherhood -- the organisation that gave birth to Hamas -- in Egypt and Syria.Hamas is caught between the hope of Egypt, where the Muslim Brotherhood has swept democratic elections, and the pressure of Syria, where a government crackdown is targeting activists, including members of the Muslim Brotherhood. The situation in Syria has been particularly problematic for Hamas, which is eager to avoid being seen as interfering in internal issues, but also finds it hard to see the Muslim Brotherhood being targeted.

The atrocities of the Syrian regime are inflicted on the Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas is no longer able to maintain its presence in Damascus, said Mukhaimer Abu Saada, a professor of political science at Gaza's Al Azhar University.Internal rumblings and external pressures have helped create a situation in which Meshaal, long considered a radical, now appears more pragmatic than Hamas's Gaza leadership, Abu Saada said.
When Meshaal was getting complete support from the Syrian regime, from Iran, he connected himself with this camp, so he could not make compromises,he said. But the peaceful revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt, along with his detachment from Iran and Syria, appear to have shifted Meshaal's thinking, convincing him that peaceful popular resistance can be effective. That is something new, Abu Saada said, acknowledging that there has been no consensus within Hamas regarding this issue.
Mahmud Zahar, one of Gaza's senior Hamas officials, notably responded that armed resistance can be popular.Zahar's willingness to challenge Meshaal, on issues ranging from resistance to reconciliation, are another sign of the shifting dynamics in the movement, Abu Saada said. The balance of power is shifting from outside to inside. Hamas's leadership in Gaza is on its own territory, he said, noting Hamas in Gaza is increasingly less dependent on regional aid.The Hamas government has a 2012 budget worth $769 million, a 22 percent increase over 2011, based on an expected intake of $174 million dollars in tariffs and taxes, particularly from the flourishing Egypt-Gaza tunnel industry.

The Hamas government is also wielding the freedom of movement that has come with Egypt's decision to open its border with Gaza.Hamas prime minister Ismail Haniya has already completed one major tour to Egypt, Sudan, Turkey and Tunisia -- his first since taking office. He is reportedly considering a second trip soon, with stops in Qatar and Iran.Haniya's visit has halted the political siege on Gaza, said Walid al-Mudallal, a political science professor at the Islamic University of Gaza, noting the movement's parliamentary delegation visit last week to Switzerland to take part in the the Inter-Parliamentary Union meeting.According to Mudallal, Hamas is closing the gap with the Palestinian consensus to achieve reconciliation, and to be able to deal with the international community. One wildcard in the movement's transformation is the future role of its powerful armed wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, once considered largely under Meshaal's direction.According to Abu Saada, that allegiance could be shifting. The armed wing of Hamas, Ezzedine al-Qassam, gives loyalty to whoever is giving the money to pay for the weapons,he said.Ezzedine al-Qassam has been showing more loyalty to the Hamas in Gaza.

15 Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:
16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.
17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.
18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.

Thailand Recognizes Palestine-Foreign nations continue to encourage Ramallah's bully-boy unilateralism as Thailand becomes the 131st nation to recognize Palestine By Gavriel Queenann First Publish: 1/20/2012, 9:13 AM

Thailand on Thursday announced it has recognized a Palestinian state.Thailand has officially recognized the state of Palestine and officially informed all permanent and observer missions to the United Nations in New York of this development, a press officer for Thailand's mission said. The move was hailed by officials in Ramallah looking for ammunition in their propaganda war with Israel.Thailand's recognition of a Palestinian state is the first of the New Year 2012 and is a new achievement for Palestinian diplomacy,Palestinian Authority foreign minister Riyad al-Maliki told the official PA news agency WAFA.Maliki added that the announcement brought to 131 the number of countries that recognize a Palestinian state along 1967 lines.Thailand recognized Israel in 1954 and has historically maintained stable relations with the Jewish state.PA chairman Mahmoud Abbas thanked Thailand for the move and indicated diplomatic relations would be established shortly.President Mahmud Abbas thanks Thailand's king and government for its official recognition of the Palestinian state, the Abbas statement said.

Thai foreign ministry spokesman Thani Thongphakdi told the AFP that recognition has been under consideration for some time.We felt that now was an appropriate time to proceed with the recognition of the state of Palestine, which was done earlier this week,he said.Thongphakdi said the move was unrelated to the recent charging of a Lebanese man suspected of planning an attack in Bangkok, who had alleged links to the Iranian- and Syrian-backed Muslim Shiite group Hizbullah.Officials in Ramallah have avoided negotiations with Israel for more than two years by creating a growing list of preconditions of talks, while at the same time violating the 1993 Oslo Accords by making unilateral moves. Those preconditions include a renewed building freeze by Israel in the disputed territories, a release of all Arab terrorists from Israeli prisons, and Israel accepting the indefensible pre-1967 lines before talks begin.Israeli officials note a previous 10-month building freeze by Israel was not only rebuffed by officials in Ramallah, but resulted in more preconditions and the PA's current unilateral bid.A foreign ministry official close to recent exploratory meetings between Israel and the PA said Ramallah was seeking to create the illusion of progress while avoiding substantive talks. In December 2011 the Palestinian Authority's parent organization - the PLO - formally announced a strategy based on continuous efforts along with the international community to secure full recognition and full United Nations membership, pursuing internal reconciliation, and keeping up the popular resistance. The PLO has also moved to induct Hamas and its terror confederates into its ranks.Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has said he is willing to restart talks without preconditions anytime, anywhere.

Russia's Medvedev holds Mideast talks with Abbas
AFPAFP – JAN 20,12

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev held talks Friday with Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas focused on efforts to kickstart stalled peace negotiations with Israel.
Abbas told Medvedev in opening remarks at the Russian president's suburban Moscow residence that the Palestinians will always draw upon your advice and the favourable approaches proposed by the Russian Federation. He added that the local leadership of Jericho had recently named one of the West Bank city's main streets after Medvedev in honour of his visit there in January 2011.I see this as a symbol of Russian-Palestinian friendship, which stretches back not decades but centuries,Medvedev said.
This is proof of the fact that our relations remain on an excellent level.Abbas arrived in Moscow on Thursday on the final leg of a European tour that also saw him visit London and Berlin.

The visits are aimed at securing European backing for the Palestinians' position amid unsuccessful attempts to resume peacemaking efforts with Israel.Direct Middle East peace talks have not been held since September 2010 and the third round of exploratory meetings held in Jordan on January 14 produced no tangible result.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Thursday following her meeting with Abbas that it was very, very important that we see progress, that each side sees that good will is there.Medvedev reaffirmed Russia's commitment to an independent Palestinian state with east Jerusalem as its capital during his January trip to the West Bank -- a position first established by the Soviet Union in 1988.Russia is a member of the so-called peacemaking Middle East Quartet that also includes the United States along with the European Union and the United Nations. But Moscow's influence in the region has waned considerably since the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Future EU bail-outs only for treaty signatories, new draft says Today JAN 20 ,12 @ 00:08 By Valentina Pop

BRUSSELS - The latest version of the treaty on EU fiscal discipline says countries cannot get bail-outs unless they sign and apply the pact. It also makes concessions to non-euro countries who want to take part in eurozone summits.Giving in to a German demand on the issue, the text - seen by EUobserver - says: Granting of assistance in the framework of new programmes under the European Stability Mechanism [ESM] will be conditional, as of 1 March 2013, on the ratification of this treaty by the contracting party concerned and as soon as the transposition period ... has expired, on compliance with the requirements of this article. The article in question calls for binding legislation - preferably constitutional - enshrining a balanced budget rule which obliges governments not to go beyond an annual structural deficit of 0.5 percent of GDP. A structural deficit is one which does not include temporary or one-off budget items. The balanced budget rule can be set aside under exceptional circumstances however, such as an unusual event outside the control of the respective government or severe economic downturn.Failure to comply with the rule means the country can be taken to the European Court of Justice by one of the other signatories. The EU commission, which in one of the previous drafts was granted the power to do this on behalf of other states, has been downgraded to a reporting function. If the European Commission, after having given the contracting party concerned the opportunity to submit its observations, concludes in its report that a contracting party has failed to comply with Article 3(2), the matter will be brought to the Court of Justice of the European Union by one or more of the contracting parties, the draft - the fourth one so far - says.In one novel idea, it adds the €500-billion-strong ESM should be the recipient of any fines imposed by the EU court on deficit sinners. The latest text also puts some numbers on how big the fines might be: If the court finds that the contracting party concerned has not complied with its judgement, it may impose on it a lump sum or a penalty payment appropriate in the circumstances and that shall not exceed 0.1% of its gross domestic product.

Outs invited in

One point of contention - likely to sour discussions on Monday and Tuesday when finance ministers discuss the text in Brussels - is participation of non-euro countries in eurozone summits.Last week's draft said only that they should be informed of what happens in the regular meetings, just like the European Parliament.
In the meantime, the Polish Prime Minister has threatened not to sign the treaty unless his country is allowed to take part and the Swedish government saw parliamentary support for the pact drain away for the same reason.A new compromise wording - which, according to one EU official, is still not up to Poland's demands - allows the president of the euro summit to invite non-euro signatories in order to discuss specific issues concerning the implementation of this treaty. It adds that the president of the European Parliament may be invited to be heard at the events and that the summit chair should present a report to the EU assembly after each leaders' meeting.National parliaments are also mentioned in the form of a new conference of the chairs of the [national] budget committees. But the format and function of the new body is left up in the air.The treaty is to enter into force on 1 January 2013, provided 12 euro-countries have ratified it or whenever the 12th one does so.

Another request of the European Parliament has also been kept - to merge the fiscal pact, which is being made by 26 EU countries at intergovernmental level, with the EU-27 Treaty within five years. The text reminds the UK, whose veto on EU Treaty change created the mess, that other countries can circumvent its ban under so-called enhanced co-operation - an EU Treaty provision that lets sub-groups of states adopt new laws when there is no consensus.EU leaders meeting on 30 January will seek political agreement on the text, with the aim of signing it in March.

Croatia: new EU member on the horizon
19.01.12 @ 18:20 By Nikolaj Nielsen

BRUSSELS - After six years of negotiations and amid an ongoing territorial dispute with Slovenia, Croatia will hold a referendum on Sunday (22 January) to decide whether to become the 28th EU member state. The voting starts on Sunday morning, with results expected at around 10pm local time in the evening.Pending the results of the referendum and ratification of the accession treaty by existing EU countries, Croatia is to join the Union in July next year.It is to have seven votes in the EU Council and 12 members in the European Parliament. The move is also to create new EU borders with Bosnia and with Montenegro.Croatia's recently elected centre-left government, led by Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic, launched a pro-EU campaign earlier this month, saying the country belongs to Europe geographically, historically and culturally. The government was sworn in shortly after it signed the accession treaty in Brussels. The only party opposing [EU] accession lost its parliamentary status,Croatia's foreign minister, Vesna Pusic told EUobserver in December.Despite the acute economic and social problems of the current euro crisis, most Croats are keen to go ahead.Berislav Zivkovic, a government spokesperson, told this website that 56 percent of Croatians want to join the EU according to a poll conducted jointly by the Croatian foreign ministry and the Ipsos Puls agency.

We are convinced that on the occasion of the imminent referendum a majority of Croatian citizens would vote in favour of Croatia accessing the European Union,he said.Rallies have been held against EU membership, culminating in a protest last Saturday when around 1,000 people reportedly gathered in Zagreb's central square.
Some concerns centre around trade. Dairy products, eggs and meat entering into Croatia from neighbouring countries will in future have to meet strict EU food safety standards. An outstanding territorial dispute with Slovenia over a small bay in the Adriatic has also clouded the accession process - Slovenia at one stage threatened to veto Croatia's accession talks back in 2009. But an arbitration process was finally launched earlier this week. This common agreement is a very welcome signal for the positive development of the good neighbourly relations between the two countries, said EU enlargement commissioner Stefan Fule. The commission gave the country a positive assessment late last year following an extensive evaluation.Croatia is to undergo two more commission reports before it enters the Union, but in the last one the executive noted improvements in the area of fundamental rights, competition, justice, freedom and security. It noted that work remains to reduce public deficit, debt, to open up its market and to lower unemployment, particularly among its youth - around 32 percent of under 25s were without jobs in 2010 according to Eurostat.

It added that the country still needs investment to get closer to EU living standards. Croatia has so far received around €150 million in pre-accession assistance every year since 2007. It stands to receive another €150 million for 2012 and a final €95 million package in 2013.For its part, Transparency International Croatia told EUobserver in an email the country is making concerted efforts to stamp out corruption and has strengthened its legislative framework on regulating financing of political parties. The reform of judiciary has been carried out with special courts dealing with organised crime and corruption being introduced, and the efficacy of the judiciary has been improved which led to the backlog of court cases being reduced, the Brussels-based NGO said.

IDF Base: 1,500 Tank Shells Stolen-Military Police believe gang of metal thieves stole the shells. Officer: ammunition could reach terrorists. By Gil Ronen First Publish: 1/19/2012, 10:29 PM

Fifteen hundred tank shells were stolen from an IDF munitions base in southern Israel.A senior officer in Southern Command said that the shells could reach terror organizations. Some of the shells may have been smuggled to the Sinai Peninsula and then transferred to terrorists inside Gaza. The Investigative Military Police is looking into the possibility that soldiers inside the base assisted the thieves. The theft was discovered during an inventory check of ammunition last week. A serious shortage of shells was discovered, and after a second count was held, the scale of the theft became apparent.Military sources said that a gang of Arab metal thieves that operates in the area is apparently behind the theft. The Arabs apparently studied the security arrangements at the base and were able to sneak in and out undetected numerous times, taking a large number of shells with them each time.A senior source in the Southern Command said that the Arab gangs in the Negev have been stepping up their attacks on IDF bases as the IDF has been tightening its hold on the Israel-Egypt border and as construction of the security barrier along the border has progressed. It started from theft of bullets from firing ranges, proceeded to theft of parts of fences and has now reached the theft of expensive and dangerous ammunition. Security in all of the southern bases needs to be rethought.

Minister: Israel is an Internet Superpower-Minister of Public Diplomacy Yuli Edelstein says Israel is an online power that has nothing to fear as the era of cyberwarfare takes hold.By Gavriel Queenann First Publish: 1/20/2012, 12:58 PM

Israel's top public relations official, on Thursday, told Israelis not to worry about the Arab-Israeli Hacker War that has erupted in recent weeks, saying Israel is an Internet Superpower.First of all there are two different things,Minister of Public Diplomacy Yuli Edelstein explained. When it's hackers versus hackers it's not nice, but at the same time I'm not sure there is an immediate danger.Edelstein also indicated the hacker war was less about technological sabotage than propaganda,To fight it we have to think about the atmosphere on the Internet, on the Web. In my opinion this is just another part of the whole 'bash Israel campaign' that we sometimes face.In remarks on Israel Radio Edelstein dismissed both Arab and Israeli hackers as foolish, saying they do stupid things.Well-funded state actors, however, were of greater concern for Edelstein. On a more serious note,Edelstein said. We know that technology can be used by dictatorships... countries that are openly talking about the destruction of the State of Israel. Hence the government created a special headquarters to give answers to these questions.Israel is known as a super-power in this whole field of information security, Internet, high-tech. I'm sure our hack-warriors will be able to make our lives here secure,Edelstein said.Edelstein also dismissed the suggestion that official Israeli cyber-war elements would go on the offensive, We are not in the business of attacking anyone. Our first and foremost goal is to prevent others from attacking the State of Israel via the web,he added.

Obama: All Options Available on Preventing Iran Nukes-President Barack H. Obama defended his record on Iran to Time Magazine, deflecting criticism by Mitt Romney. By David Lev First Publish: 1/19/2012, 11:19 AM

In an interview with TIME Magazine, parts of which were published on the web Wednesday night, U.S. President Barack H. Obama slams Republican critics of his policy on Iran – singling out Mitt Romney, who appears to be the front-runner in the race to become the Republican nominee to run against Obama later this year. Romney has accused Obama of failing to act to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, but Obama said in the interview that he was seriously mistaken – on his policy, and on what to do about Iran. Romney's position would not stand up to a serious debate, he told TIME's Fareed Zakaria.Romney stated recently that Iran would definitely be able to build nuclear weapons if Obama was reelected, since the President had done nothing, and would continue to do nothing, to prevent Iran from acquiring the weapons. I have made myself clear since I began running for the presidency that we will take every step available to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, Obama said, adding Can we guarantee that Iran takes the smarter path? No, which is why I’ve repeatedly said we don’t take any options off the table in preventing them from getting a nuclear weapon. The interview, which will appear in the January 30 edition of TIME, touches on numerous issues that Obama will find himself debating with the Republican candidate as the election draws closer. Obama blamed Congressional Republicans for weakening America's international position, by failing to support some of his domestic policies.

Our whole foreign policy has to be anchored in economic strength here at home, Obama said. And if we are not strong, stable, growing, making stuff, training our work force so that it’s the most skilled in the world, maintaining our lead in innovation, in basic research, in basic science, in the quality of our universities, in the transparency of our financial sector, if we don’t maintain the upward mobility and equality of opportunity that underwrites our politically stability and makes us a beacon for the world, then our foreign policy leadership will diminish as well.Overall, though, the U.S. is in a stronger position than it was when he entered office, Obama said.

Cargo ship damaged after collision off Istanbul
Associated PressBy SELCAN HACAOGLU | Associated Press – JAN 20,12

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — A cargo ship brushed against two anchored vessels during severe weather off the coast of Istanbul on Friday and tilted to one side, taking on water for hours before authorities were forced to pull it ashore using a tug boat.A senior maritime official said the disabled ship was not in danger of sinking, but most of its crew members were evacuated before it was towed. The cargo ship's struggle came during a time of heightened attention on ship safety following last week's grounding of the Costa Concordia cruise ship off Italy's coast, an accident that killed 11 people and left 21 missing. Also Friday, a freighter ran aground off a Dutch beach. In the Istanbul area, the Sierra Leone-flagged Kayan-1, an 86-meter (282-feet) freighter carrying empty containers, tilted on its right side after its collision. Salih Orakci, head of the General Directorate of Coastal Safety, said the ship cannot sink but noted the weather was aggravating the situation.Hours later, authorities decided to go with the only apparent option and pulled the ship aground.

The captain and two other crew had remained aboard to steer the vessel, which earlier had tried to pump out the water, authorities said. Ten other crew members were evacuated. Five maritime officials boarded the Kayan-1 to assess the situation, then left the vessel. The ship was trying to moor due to the rough weather when it got dragged and brushed against two other cargo ships: the Netherlands-flagged Slochterdiep and Tanzania-flagged Adria Blu. The Kayan-1 came to a halt near the shore at a depth of 9-meter (30-feet), Coastal Safety said on its website. The ship had 20 tons of diesel fuel but there was no leak, environmental authorities said
Authorities canceled several scheduled ferry trips in the Sea of Marmara and in the Bosporus, the narrow waterway that bisects Istanbul, due to strong winds and high seas.Separately Friday, a Philippine-registered freighter ran aground off a Dutch beach after its anchor slipped in an overnight storm. The 500-foot (155-meter) Aztec Maiden was carrying no cargo when it drifted onto sand off the North Sea coastal town of Wijk aan Zee, 12 miles (20 kilometers) west of Amsterdam, the Dutch Coast Guard said. The 21 crew members stayed on the ship. Tug boats will attempt to pull the vessel free at high tide around 1 p.m. (1200 GMT).Spokesman Peter Verburg told national broadcaster NOS that the Coast Guard was closely monitoring the ship for any fuel leaks.Associated Press Writer Suzan Fraser in Ankara contributed.

SOPA and PIPA Part of Effort to Domesticate Politically Incorrect Internet Kurt Nimmo Infowars.com January 20, 2012

The Megaupload takedown is dominating headlines, but there is something the incident has overshadowed – large internet corporations and government have censored political websites for years as part of a plan to domesticate the internet.
photoCensorship of the internet is not simply for the Chinese. On Thursday, Paul Joseph Watson pointed out the hypocrisy of Google as the transnational corporation shouldered its way into the limelight by opposing SOPA while enforcing SOPA-like policies of its own, blacklisting legitimate websites from its news aggregator and following government orders to remove material from its search results and You Tube.
Watson notes that Google has delisted both Infowars.com and Prison Planet.com – the flagship websites of nationally syndicated talk show host Alex Jones – from its popular news website and news search engine. Google News is a content aggregator that allows users to search thousands of news sources for relevant stories.Google has memory holed these two websites from its news portal for political reasons and not because they are insignificant and draw paltry traffic. In fact, Infowars.com is a major news source that gets more traffic than MSNBC.com and many other corporate media news websites.

Google is not alone in attempting to blunt Infowars.com and Prison Planet.com. MySpace, Time Warner, New Zealand’s Asia Netcom, the ISP Tiscali in the UK and even a British aiport – along with a number of libraries and government-owned entities – have shut out Alex Jones’ popular websites.Infowars.com and Prison Planet.com are not alone. Public wi-fi systems stationed in airports, train stations, libraries, schools, and workplaces also routinely censor political websites, writes Watson. In addition to blocking and censoring Jones’ news websites, Google property YouTube has consistently taken down his videos and fiddled with hit counters and other metrics to make it seem the videos are less popular than they actually are.Google’s effort to censor Alex Jones and other dangerous alternative media sites makes sense when you realize the company has intimate ties with the CIA and the military-industrial complex. The establishment has worked behind the scenes for years to devise a method to sanitize the internet – in the same way corporate television has been disinfected for decades – and drive the truth-seekers and tellers off the medium. SOPA and PIPA, under the guise of fighting dreaded copyright criminals, is only the latest guise.

In 2010, globalists meeting in Davos, Switzerland, called for internet licensing by the United Nations in order to combat so-called cyber warfare of the sort the shadowy Anonymous hacktivist collective used against the Department of Justice and the FBI following the Megaupload takedown. For at least three years, the corporate media has trumpeted a vastly exaggerated threat of cyber terrorism and illustrated the warning with dire scenarios of disabled power grids and hobbled civilian infrastructure.Former president Bill Clinton has called for a government-run internet Ministry of Truth to get rid of pesky troublemakers – his wife recently admitted the government is losing the information war – and Obama’s information czar Cass Sunstein has demanded that websites be mandated by law to link to opposing information or that pop ups containing government propaganda be forcibly included on political blogs.Sunstein had previously called for a COINTELPRO-like effort against politically incorrect activist groups and also called for the government to tax or even ban outright political opinions it finds objectionable. Finally, the Pentagon has declared the internet a battlefield and recently stated it will respond to so-called cyber attacks militarily. If you shut down our power grid, maybe we will put a missile down one of your smokestacks,a military official said last May.The military response to exaggerated cyber threats was put on the fast track by Obama in 2009 when he instructed the Pentagon to attack cyberthreats within the United States. Instead of allowing local police response to suspected cyber crimes, Obama moved to violate Posse Comitatus and turn the United States into a combat zone:

The Obama administration has adopted new procedures for using the Defense Department’s vast array of cyberwarfare capabilities in case of an attack on vital computer networks inside the United States, delicately navigating historic rules that restrict military action on American soil, the New York Times reported at the time.SOPA and PIPA are merely part a larger and more comprehensive effort to control the internet and reduce the threat it poses to the government. Both laws are efforts to codify what has been going on now for several years. The defeat of SOPA and PIPA are certainly welcome and the large response in opposition to the legislation is a positive development, however we must consider the larger and more ominous threat the government and the transnational corporations it answers to pose to our liberty and the ability to communicate and raise political awareness.

Tepco Drills Hole in Fukushima Reactor – Finds Nuclear Fuel Has Gone Missing Cold Shutdown … or Escape of Hot Fuel? Washington’s Blog January 20, 2012

I noted last month in connection with Tepco’s announcement of cold shutdown of the Fukushima reactors:If the reactors are cold, it may be because most of the hot radioactive fuel has leaked out.The New York Times pointed out last month:A former nuclear engineer with three decades of experience at a major engineering firm … who has worked at all three nuclear power complexes operated by Tokyo Electric [said] If the fuel is still inside the reactor core, that’s one thing …. But if the fuel has been dispersed more widely, then we are far from any stable shutdown.Indeed, if the center of the reactors are in fact relatively cold, it may be because most of the hot radioactive fuel has leaked out of the containment vessels and escaped into areas where it can do damage to the environment. After drilling a hole in the containment vessel of Fukushima reactor 2, Tepco cannot find the fuel. As AP notes:
The steam-blurred photos taken by remote control Thursday found none of the reactor’s melted fuel ….

The photos also showed inner wall of the container heavily deteriorated after 10 months of exposure to high temperature and humidity, Matsumoto said.TEPCO workers inserted the endoscope — an industrial version of the kind of endoscope doctors use — through a hole in the beaker-shaped container at the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant’s No. 2 reactor ….The probe failed to find the water surface, which indicate the water sits at lower-than-expected levels inside the primary containment vessel and questions the accuracy of the current water monitors, Matsumoto said. And while cold shutdown means that the water inside the reactors is below the boiling point, CNN reports:Massive steam and water drops made it difficult to get a clear vision….
Given that steam forms when water boils, this is an indication that the reactor is not in cold shutdown.Mainchi points out that reactors 1 and 3 are probably in no better shape:The fuel inside the Nos. 1 to 3 reactors is believed to have melted through the pressure vessels and been accumulating in the outer primary containers after the Fukushima plant lost its key functions to cool the reactors in the wake of the earthquake and tsunami on March 11 last year.

Israel detains Hamas head of Palestinian parliament
AFPAFP – JAN 20,12

The Israeli army on Thursday arrested the Palestinian parliamentary speaker, Hamas member Aziz Dweik, in the West Bank, a senior colleague told AFP.Dweik was detained by soldiers at a checkpoint in Jabaa, between Ramallah and Jerusalem, as he was travelling to Hebron in the southern West Bank, the leader of the cabinet, Bahaa Yussef, told AFP.Last May, Dweik was held at an Israeli military checkpoint in the West Bank along with three other Hamas parliamentarians. One of them, Nizar Ramadan, was detained while the others were allowed to proceed.Hamas member Ahmed Bahar, the Gaza-based first vice president of the Palestinian parliament, in a statement denounced the detention of Mr Dweik, which aims to undermine reconciliation efforts (with Fatah) and disrupt legislative work in the West Bank.Hamas government spokesman Taher al-Nunu also condemned the detention and warned of the consequences of any attack on his person in a statement calling for Dweik's immediate release.

The Israeli army confirmed Dweik's arrest.Israeli soldiers arrested Dweik at a checkpoint because he is suspected of being involved in the activities of a terrorist group,an army spokesman told AFP.The Hamas-dominated Palestinian parliament has been paralysed since the Islamist movement took over the Gaza Strip in June 2007, ousting Fatah forces loyal to Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas.Last month, Abbas met Hamas chief Khaled Meshaal in Cairo where they decided on a process to pave the way for Hamas to join a reformed Palestine Liberation Organisation and for long-delayed Palestinian elections.Azzam al-Ahmad, a Fatah official tasked with handling the reconciliation with Hamas, condemned the arrest which he said follows a continued action by Israel against Palestinan lawmakers. It contradicts every earlier agreement with Israel,Ahmad told AFP by telephone from Moscow where he was accompanying Abbas on an official voyage.Dweik, a professor of geography at Al-Najah University in the southern West Bank, was elected to represent the Hebron constituency and became speaker in the parliament's first session in February 2006.

Some 20 of Hamas's 74 MPs in the 132-member Palestinian legislative council are currently being held by Israel. Most of them, including two former ministers, have been arrested in the West Bank since October 2010.Almost all of the officials were among 64 Hamas parliamentarians and government members previously arrested by Israel after the seizure of one of its soldiers, Gild Shalit, in June 2006 near the Islamist-ruled Gaza Strip.Shalit was freed on October 18 in a prisoner swap between Israel and Hamas. The first stage of the deal in October saw 477 Palestinians including hundreds serving life for killing Israelis, released. Two Fatah MPs and one from the leftwing Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine are also currently being held by Israel, Palestinian parliamentary sources say.

US military chief holds talks in Israel on Iran
Associated PressBy DANIEL ESTRIN | Associated Press – JAN 20,12

JERUSALEM (AP) — The U.S. military's top general conducted an intense string of closed-door talks with Israeli leaders Friday, amid apparent disagreements between the two countries over how to respond to Iran's disputed nuclear program. The chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, Army Gen. Martin Dempsey, and Israeli leaders kept silent about the exact content of their discussions. Dempsey was expected to urge Israel not to rush to attack Iran at a time when the U.S. is trying to rally additional global support to pressure Tehran through sanctions to dial back its nuclear program.Dempsey met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has been warning about the dangers of the Iranian nuclear program for more than a decade.

Netanyahu told Dempsey the U.S. should ratchet up sanctions against Iran to ones that would target its central bank and oil exports, Israeli news site YNet reported. It quoted Netanyahu as saying such measures must be imposed immediately. At the start of a meeting with Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak, Dempsey said the U.S. and Israel have many interests in common in the region in this very dynamic time, and the more we can continue to engage each other, the better off we'll all be.There is never a dull moment, that I can promise you,Barak replied, in comments released by Barak's office.Israel believes Iran is close to completing the technology to produce an atomic weapon. Tehran insists its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes.Israel has said it prefers employing international diplomacy to solve the problem, but it has not taken the option of a military strike off the table.Israel considers Iran an existential threat because of its nuclear program, missile development, support of radical anti-Israel forces in Lebanon and Gaza and frequent references by its president to the destruction of the Jewish state. In an interview published Friday in the Israeli daily Maariv, Israel's recently retired military intelligence chief Amos Yadlin, said the U.S. and Israel now agree that Iran is deliberately working slowly toward nuclear weapons, to minimize international diplomatic pressure and sanctions.

The U.S. and Israel differ about what would be considered unacceptable Iranian behavior that would require a military strike, the former chief claimed. While Israel defines the red line as Iran's ability and potential for a breakthrough, the Americans draw the red line a lot farther away, said Yadlin, who stepped down as intelligence chief in late 2010.He said the Iranian nuclear program was Israel's only existential threat, noting that in addition to the possibility of a nuclear attack from Iran, its possession of nuclear weapons would spark a regional arms race.
In that situation, in a nuclear neighborhood, the chance grows that a nuclear weapon could slip into the hands of terrorists,Yadlin said.Gen. Dempsey also met with Israel's military chief of staff, Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz, and President Shimon Peres.
I am sure that in this fight (against Iran) we will emerge victorious, Peres said to Dempsey, in comments provided by the president's office. He called Iran a center of world terror.Dempsey told reporters he couldn't agree more with Peres' characterization of the common challenge we face.In between the meetings, Dempsey visited Yad Vashem, Israel's Holocaust memorial and museum. He wrote in its guest book, We are committed to ensuring that such a human tragedy (as the Holocaust) never happens again. He added,God bless the victims and protect Israel. In the past, Netanyahu has sharply criticized Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's denial of the Holocaust and has drawn parallels between the world's treatment of Iran today and its failure to act against Nazi Germany in time to save European Jewry.

Netanyahu: Iran has decided to become a nuclear state. Action needed before it is too late.DEBKAfile Exclusive Report January 19, 2012, 6:56 PM (GMT+02:00)

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared Thursday night, Jan. 19 that Iran had decided to become a nuclear state. He urged action before it was too late to stop Iran completing the construction of a nuclear weapon. His statement at the end of a visit to Holland gave Gen Martin Dempsey, on his first visit to Israel as Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, the message he will be asked to take back to President Barack Obama. It also contradicted Defense Minister Ehud Barak's statement that Tehran had not yet decided to go nuclear. On Dec. 22, 2011, debkafile first revealed Tehran had reached a decision to go ahead and build a nuclear weapon.
Netanyahu has kept the Iranian cards close to his chest. His statement therefore caught wrong-footed the Israeli officials, including Defense Minister Ehud Barak, who in the last 48 hours had asserted that Iran had not yet decided whether to build a nuclear bomb and there was still time for US-led sanctions to work.debkafile reported earlier Thursday:Gen. Martin Dempsey begins his first visit to Israel as Chairman of the Joint US Chiefs of Staff amid a major falling-out between the two governments over the handling of Iran's nuclear weapon potential. debkafile's military and Washington sources confirm that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stands by the view that Iran is advancing its plans to build a nuclear bomb full speed ahead, undeterred even by the threat of harsher sanctions. Netanyahu therefore stands by his refusal of President Barack Obama's demand for a commitment to abstain from a unilateral strike on Iran's nuclear sites without prior notice to Washington. The US president repeated this demand when he called the Israeli prime minister Thursday night Jan. 13. Netanyahu replied that, in view of their disagreement on this point, he preferred to cancel the biggest US-Israel war game ever staged due to have taken place in April. The exercise was to have tested the level of coordination between the two armies in missile defense for the contingency of a war with Iran or a regional conflict.

The prime minister was concerned that having large-scale US military forces in the country would restrict his leeway for decision-making on Iran.
In an effort to limit the damage to relations with the US administration, Defense Minister Ehud Barak struck a conciliatory note Wednesday, Jan. 18, saying, "Israel is still very far from a decision on attacking Iran's nuclear facilities."
Striking the pose of middleman, he was trying to let Washington know that there was still time for the US and Israel to reach an accommodation on whether and when a strike should take place.

debkafile's sources doubt that President Obama and Prime Minister Netanyahu are in any mood to respond to Barak's effort to cool the dispute. Obama needs to be sure he will not be taken by surprise by an Israel attack in the middle of his campaign for re-election, especially since he has begun taking heat on the Iranian issue.Republican rivals are accusing him of being soft on Iran. And while the economy is the dominant election issue, a majority of Americans disapprove of his handling of Iran's nuclear ambitions by a margin of 48 to 33 percent according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll this week.Wednesday (Thursday morning Israel time), President Obama responded by reiterating that he has been clear since running for the presidency that he will take every step available to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.Echoes of Barak's arguments were heard in the words of US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, Wednesday night: We are not making any special steps at this point in order to deal with the situation. Why? Because, frankly, we are fully prepared to deal with that situation now.Panetta went on to say that Defense Minister Barak contacted him and asked to postpone the joint US-Israeli drill for technical reasons. Before he took off for a short trip to Holland, Netanyahu instructed Barak and IDF Chief of Staff Benny Gantz not to deviate in their talks with Gen. Dempsey from the position he took with the US president, namely, no commitment for advance notice to Washington about a unilateral strike against Iran.

The Israeli prime minister is convinced that, contrary to the claims by US spokesmen and media, that current sanctions are ineffective insofar as slowing Iran's advance toward a nuclear weapon and the harsher sanctions on Iran's central bank and oil exports are too slow and will take hold too late to achieve their purpose.

In any case, say Israeli officials, Washington is again signaling its willingness to go back to direct nuclear negotiations with Tehran, although past experience proved that Iran exploits diplomatic dialogue as grace time for moving forward on its nuclear ambitions.US spokesmen denied an Iranian report that a recent letter from the US president to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei proposed opening a direct channel for talks.Still those reports persist. American and European spokesmen were forced to deny a statement by Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi Wednesday on his arrival in Ankara that Iran and the big powers are in contact over the revival of nuclear negotiations.Netanyahu fears that dialogue between Iran and the five powers plus Germany (the P5+1) will resume after bowing to an Iranian stipulation that sanctions be suspended for the duration of the talks. Once again, Tehran will be enabled to steal a march on the US and Israel and bring its nuclear weapon program to conclusion, unhindered by economic constraints.
